With all the hyped hullabaloo around just how mobile-icious we are this holiday season — yes, it’s up, but it is also a retailer-cooked trend that reporters grab onto amid the news drought of the Thanksgiving weekend — one of the many statistics spewed out by a variety of sources was rather interesting.

According to IBM, in a report titled “The iPad Factor”:

“The [Apple] iPad generated more traffic than any other tablet or smartphone, reaching nearly 10 percent of online shopping. This was followed by iPhone at 8.7 percent and [Google] Android 5.5 percent. The iPad dominated tablet traffic at 88.3 percent followed by the Barnes & Noble Nook at 3.1 percent, Amazon Kindle at 2.4 percent and the Samsung Galaxy at 1.8 percent.”

And, over at eBay and its PayPal unit — which spewed out all kinds of data on mobile transactions that showed volume was between two and three times greater, mostly on Apple devices — the company noted that one of its bestselling items on Black Friday was the iPad 2, selling 250 per hour from 12 am to 8 am PT.

That tracks on an earlier survey by Nielsen with 48 percent of U.S. children 6 to 12 years old asking for the iPad, followed by iPod touch (36 percent), iPad mini (36 percent) and iPhone (33 percent).

Presumably, which will be used to order more.

Here’s a lovely IBM chart explaining it all:

IBM Holiday Benchmark Infographic BF2012

An airborne assessment of Apple's new gear and its expanded market reach.

Though I’m not typically one to miss an Apple event, I found myself on a New York-bound plane Tuesday as Apple unveiled its latest creations.

Thankfully, I was flying Virgin America, which has Wi-Fi on every flight. So, like many people, I was tuned into various liveblogs (including, of course, our own).

Being up here gives a little distance and perspective. So, pardon the pun, here’s my 30,000-foot take on what Apple announced, and how it fits in with some other things going on in the industry.

The iPad mini was the expected star of the show, and it arrived as the final product, though with few surprises. Apple kept the same aspect ratio and pixel count as the iPad 2, so the mini is all set to run any iPad-optimized apps.

Apple isn’t competing aggressively on price — selling the Wi-Fi-only model for $329, well above tablets such as the Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 (not to mention a host of other small Android slates). Still, Apple did lower the bar slightly, with the mini selling for $70 less than the cheapest full-size iPad 2.

Apple also introduced an updated fourth-generation iPad that should upset some who thought “the new iPad” wouldn’t become “the old iPad” quite so fast. For all other buyers, they are just getting more bang for the buck — along with the new Lightning connector. That’s a good thing for the future, probably, but, as with the iPhone, it’s a pain if you have lots of existing iPeripherals.

On the desktop Mac side of things, Apple revamped its two main models — the iMac and Mac mini. However, Apple plays in only in a couple segments of the desktop market. For those looking for an all-in-one, the iMac got thinner and more powerful, employing a hybrid drive that combines flash and hard-drive storage.

Here, the iMac will find itself up against a host of touchscreen Windows 8 all-in-ones. Apple continues to make the case that touch is best served on tablets, and that when it comes to the desktop, a nice trackpad will do the trick. Acer, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Lenovo and everyone else will be making a different case, as they add touch to lots of their models — particularly tablets, all-in-ones and convertibles.

As for laptops, Apple added one new model to its lineup, introducing a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, offering those who want the high-end screen in a more compact and slightly less pricey machine. As with the 15-incher, choosing the Retina display gets you a thinner, lighter laptop, but at the expense of an optical drive and a bigger hit to the wallet.

Apple didn’t break a ton of new ground on Tuesday, but what it did was expand its reach, covering a larger part of the markets in which it already competes. Plus, Apple ensured that it will have some brand-new products in stores just as Microsoft and PC makers begin their massive Windows 8 push. Google is also expected to update its Nexus lineup, having scheduled an event for Oct. 29 in New York. (Android chief Andy Rubin will be at D: Dive Into Mobile later that day.)

Well, it’s about time to fasten seat belts and turn off electronic devices. That gives me just enough time to ponder which devices might be finding their way onto this year’s holiday shopping list.

Not a great start for Samsung.

A tough break for Samsung ahead of the company’s big patent trial with Apple next week. The jury hearing the case will be told that Samsung failed to preserve evidence that may have been helpful to Apple.

Early this morning, Magistrate Judge Paul S. Grewal granted Apple’s request for an Adverse Inference Jury Instruction, handing down an order that will see the judge presiding over the case inform jurors that Samsung did not comply with its obligation to preserve relevant evidence, and may have even destroyed what would have been favorable to Apple. Specifically at issue here is Samsung’s failure to provide notes and emails from a March 5, 2011, strategy meeting held to discuss possible alterations to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that might make it more competitive with the iPad 2.

Here’s the jury instruction, courtesy of Florian Mueller at FOSS Patents:

Samsung has failed to prevent the destruction of relevant evidence for Apple’s use in this litigation. This is known as the ‘spoliation of evidence.’

I instruct you, as a matter of law, that Samsung failed to preserve evidence after its duty to preserve arose. This failure resulted from its failure to perform its discovery obligations.

You also may presume that Apple has met its burden of proving the following two elements by a preponderance of the evidence: first, that relevant evidence was destroyed after the duty to preserve arose. Evidence is relevant if it would have clarified a fact at issue in the trial and otherwise would naturally have been introduced into evidence; and second, the lost evidence was favorable to Apple.

Whether this finding is important to you in reaching a verdict in this case is for you to decide. You may choose to find it determinative, somewhat determinative, or not at all determinative in reaching your verdict.

As Mueller notes, this isn’t the harshest of adverse inference instructions. The judge could have ordered the jury to presume certain of Apple’s claims proven because relevant evidence in its favor was destroyed. But he didn’t. So, to some extent, Samsung — which argues that the meeting was a harmless rival-product benchmarking session — is getting off easy here. That said, any adverse inference instruction prior to the start of a big case like this casts Samsung in a bad light before the jury, making the company appear potentially untrustworthy. This is certainly not the way you want to kick off an important trial.

Samsung is not off to a great start here.

UPDATE: Here’s Samsung’s statement on the instruction:
Exactly the same arguments of spoliation were rejected in May by Administrative Law Judge Pender at the International Trade Commission. He concluded that Samsung took “reasonable and appropriate steps to preserve evidence” and that Samsung’s document retention policy complied with federal law. We intend to appeal Judge Grewal’s decision to the trial judge, and if necessary, to the Court of Appeals. Samsung remains committed to complying with all information requests from the court.

The iPad 2's $399 price point is unlocking demand in the education market.

With a growing number of schools across the nation embracing the iPad, the device is gaining significant momentum in the education market. And while it’s still early in its history, it’s beginning to look like the iPad could be the biggest thing to happen to the classroom gadget market since the overhead projector.

Consider this: Apple’s third quarter was the second consecutive one in which the education market purchased twice as many iPads as Macs. And Mac sales to education for the period were at an all-time high.

Discussing Apple’s third-quarter earnings during a conference call Tuesday, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said that iPad sales in the U.S. education market had set a new quarterly record, nearly doubling year over year to just under one million iPads. A key driver of those sales: The reduced-price iPad 2. Evidently, the device’s $399 price point has really helped to unlock demand in the sector.

“The reason that we [adopted a lower price point for the iPad 2] was because we believed that sales would be incrementally larger if there was price elasticity,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said during the earnings call. “We knew there were buyers that really wanted the best product, but needed it to be a little less expensive. … So I think the lower price did help our sales. And I think it’s particularly helping in K-12. The adoption rate of iPad in education is something I’d never seen from any technology product in history. Usually, education tends to be fairly conservative in terms of buying, or K-12 does, and we’re not seeing that at all on the iPad.”

Forecast: 20 million iPads sold.

Apple’s June quarter may prove to be the biggest one yet for the iPad.

In a research note to clients today, Needham analyst Charlie Wolf raised his estimate for iPad sales for the three months ended June from 13.5 million units to 20 million. That’s more than double the 9.25 million iPads Apple sold in the same quarter a year ago. Wolf’s is the most bullish iPad sales forecast I’ve seen to date, and if Apple manages to hit it, it will be a new record, far exceeding the 15 million iPads the company sold during the first quarter of 2012.

So what made Wolf raise his forecast by 6.5 million units? Two things: First, his initial estimate was simply too low. Second: Accelerating iPad adoption in the enterprise and education markets.

“The increase in our estimate of iPad shipments from 13.5 million to 20.0 million units is based … on anecdotal evidence … that the device is invading businesses in ways that could not have been predicted when Apple introduced the iPad in April 2010,” Wolf explains. “It’s also based on the historical trajectory of iPad sales. When iPad 2 was introduced in March 2011, sales increased 97% in the following (June) quarter. Our forecast of 20 million iPad sales in June implies a 70% sequential increase from March. While this number appears aggressive, it must be remembered that Apple has continued to sell iPad 2 at the lower price of $399. A study by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners found that since the introduction of the new iPad in March, iPad 2 has composed 41% of all iPad purchases.”

A nosebleeder of a forecast, to be sure. But according to Wolf, it’s entirely plausible, and there’s plenty of evidence to support it. “The iPad is invading the business market at a much faster pace than the iPhone,” he said. “In our view, it’s only a matter of time before iPad shipments exceed iPhone shipments.”

Apple is scheduled to report third-quarter earnings on Tuesday, July 24.

Keeping the iPad 2 around at a reduced price is proving to be a very smart business move.

During Apple’s last earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said the iPad 2′s new lower price point was unlocking demand among price-sensitive customers. So how is it selling?

Very well, turns out.

According to new data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), the breakdown in sales of the iPad 2 and the new iPad between February and April of 2012 were roughly similar. The research firm says that since the March 16th launch date of the new iPad, that device accounted for 59 percent of total iPad sales, while the iPad 2, which costs $100 less, accounted for 41 percent.

In other words, demand for the-second generation iPad, at its reduced price, isn’t all that much less than demand for the new iPad at full price. And according to Apple, “the new iPad is on fire. We’re selling them as fast as we can make them.”

So keeping the iPad 2 around is proving to be a savvy business move, and one that’s almost certainly buttressing Apple’s already dominant share of the tablet market.

“The lower price of the iPad 2 seems to be attracting many new buyers, and bringing thriftier customers into the fold,” CIRP partner Josh Lowitz told AllThingsD. “In contrast with how customers behave when Apple launches new iPhone models, our data suggests that a lot of iPad buyers bought iPad 2s right up to and after the launch of the new iPad.”

So it’s pretty clear that the iPad 2 is commanding the attention of budget-conscious consumers. Which lends further credence to theories suggesting that it’s taking market share away from lower-priced tablets like Amazon’s Kindle Fire. According to the latest data from IDC, global Fire shipments dropped from 4.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011 to less than 750,000 units last quarter. Meanwhile, the iPad’s share rose to 68 percent from 54.7 percent.

If the lower-priced iPad 2 is selling as well as CIRP’s data suggests, there may well be a correlation between strong demand for it and weakening demand for the Fire.

One thing's for sure -- Apple's iPad isn't feeling the heat.

Once hailed as the first true rival to the iPad, Amazon’s Kindle Fire no longer seems to be much of a threat to Apple’s tablet. The Fire had no impact on Apple’s March-quarter iPad sales. Indeed, during the company’s second-quarter earnings call, CFO Peter Oppenheimer said Apple is selling new iPads “as fast as we can make them.” And, according to the latest data from IDC, global Fire shipments dropped from 4.8 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011 to less than 750,000 units last quarter.

From 16.8 percent to about 4 percent worldwide market share in a single quarter. That is a swift and ugly decline. What’s causing it?

Kindle Fire demand could be dropping off as customers postpone their purchases in anticipation of a new version of the device. Or it could be declining because the Fire was a really well-executed holiday play whose novelty has since worn off.

Or it could be that the iPad 2, which Apple continues to sell alongside the new iPad at a lower price, is winning over some of the same consumers that Amazon has been targeting with the Fire.

Or, because the number of units shipped isn’t the same as units sold, the dropoff in shipments in the Fire’s latest quarter could primarily be the result of a large inventory buildup in the product’s first months on the market.

At $399, the iPad 2 is still twice the price of the Fire. But it’s also $100 cheaper than the new iPad, and comes accompanied by the same vast app and content ecosystem, iCloud, Facetime and other slick features. And that may be discount enough to command the attention of budget-conscious consumers. Indeed, during Apple’s last earnings call, CEO Tim Cook said the iPad 2′s new lower price point was unlocking demand among price-sensitive customers.

If that’s the case, perhaps it’s unlocking demand among potential Kindle Fire buyers as well. It’s worth noting that during the same period, IDC claims that while the Fire’s share of the market fell to 4 percent from nearly 17 percent, the iPad’s share rose to 68 percent from 54.7 percent.

Could there be a correlation there?

Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes thinks there might be.

“The lower priced iPad 2 has seemed to offset some of the original threat of the lower priced Fire,” he says. “Many consumers seem willing to pay $399 for a feature packed tablet with a strong and developed ecosystem rather than $199 for a relatively underpowered tablet.”

Certainly plausible. Anecdotally, I know a few folks who had planned to buy the Fire, only to balk later and cough up the extra money for an iPad 2. Perhaps there are lots more of them out there. Your thoughts?

Logitech cuts the cord and goes green with its new solar-powered keyboard and protective case for the iPad.

If you love your iPad but don’t love its virtual keyboard, Logitech has a snappy new solution for you — and it’s environmentally friendly to boot.

The accessory maker today revealed its Solar Keyboard Folio, an iPad case with a built-in Bluetooth keyboard.

Add-on keyboards for the iPad certainly aren’t a new thing. What sets the Solar Keyboard Folio apart from the rest is that it doesn’t require a cable or battery for power or recharging. Instead, the case features integrated solar cells that draw juice from indoor and outdoor light.

Logitech says that when fully charged, the keyboard’s battery can last up to two years, based on two hours of usage per day.

When not in use, the Solar Keyboard Folio doubles as a protective case for your tablet, and like the Smart Cover, the iPad automatically wakes up when you open the case, and goes to sleep when in the closed position.

The book-style case can be positioned at two different angles, one that places the iPad in an upright position for full access to the keyboard, and one that’s better suited for viewing media.

The Logitech Solar Keyboard Folio works with the third-generation iPad and iPad 2, so unfortunately, if you have an original iPad, you’re out of luck. It will be available in the U.S. and Europe this month for $129.99.

Looks like 2012 may well be “the year of the iPad,” just like 2010 and 2011 before it.

According to a new survey from ChangeWave, consumer satisfaction with Apple’s new iPad is running high — significantly higher than its predecessors. Some 98 percent of new iPad owners polled by the research firm last week said they were satisified with the device. Of those, 82 percent professed to being “very satisfied,” while 16 percent said they were “somewhat satisifed.” Only 2 percent were “somewhat unsatisfied.” And no one was “very unsatisfied.”

Impressive results, and a nice jump over the satisfaction ratings given the iPad 2 in a similar survey, which found 74 percent of the tablet’s owners to be very satisifed and 23 percent somewhat satisifed.

So what drove them? The new iPad’s high-resolution Retina display was cited by 75 percent of those polled as the device’s best feature. Long battery life and 4G LTE capability were also highly rated, with 22 percent and 21 percent dubbing them favorite features.

There were criticisms as well, of course. The new iPad’s price was cited by 26 percent of respondents as their most disliked feature. And the cost of its wireless data plan was noted by another 23 percent. Notably, claims that the new iPad is unusually warm was a non-issue among those polled, with just 7 percent reporting it as a dislike and 89 percent saying it’s not a problem.

You don't say.

Given that Apple sold three million new iPads less than four days after its March 16 debut, it should come as no surprise that demand for the device is running high. And it should come as even less of a surprise that demand is particularly high among the the young and tech-savvy.

That said, it is helpful to see that demand quantified, which is exactly what Baird Equity Research has done in its latest iPad survey. Among a group of 488 tech-savvy consumers between the ages of 18 and 34, Baird found that 24 percent of U.S. respondents planned to purchase the new iPad in the next three months. Among international respondents, that number rose to 29 percent. Interestingly, 42 percent of respondents (both U.S. and international) said the purchase would be their first tablet, while the remaining 48 percent said they already owned the iPad 2 or its predecessor.

A few more notable findings:

15 percent of U.S respondents and 22 percent of international ones said that they plan to purchase an iPad 2 at its newly discounted price.

A quarter of the 59 Kindle Fire owners in the survey said they plan to purchase an iPad in the next three months. Says Baird, “We would note that the Kindle Fire was released in mid-November, marking a fairly quick turn-around.”

Respondents who planned to purchase the 4G iPad favored Verizon and AT&T equally.

The 16 gigabyte iPad was by far the most popular model among consumers Baird surveyed.

"Apple has sold ~750,000 new iPads per day since launch on Friday."

Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, says last week’s iPad launch was the company’s strongest ever. And while it does include nine days of preorders, opening weekend iPad sales of three million is an impressive feat. How many companies can claim to have sold three million tablets total, let alone in just under four days? Not Motorola. Not Research In Motion. And certainly not Hewlett-Packard.

Three million is a big number — bigger than expected, perhaps. And with the device headed to 24 more countries this Friday, Apple is just getting started.

Indeed, UBS analyst Maynard Um says sales for this quarter could be massive.

“Apple has sold ~750,000 new iPads per day since launch on Friday,” Um said in a note to clients. “If there are no supply shortages, this would imply a run rate of ~12 million new iPads between launch and the end of the quarter. We continue to believe there could be upside to our 12 million estimate for the quarter.”

Notably, Um here is referring to sales of the new iPad only. Which means there’s likely even more upside to that upside he mentions when it comes to sales of the new iPad and iPad 2 both.

Once again, the folks at SquareTrade have rushed out to buy -- and torture -- the latest iPad.

If you can’t get enough news about the new iPad, here’s yet another look at how Apple’s latest tablet fares, based on a certain test.

And if you are tired of hearing about the new iPad, this story might still bring a smile to your face.

The folks at gadget insurer SquareTrade have been putting new devices to the drop test for some time. So, naturally, they have put the new Apple tablet through similar torture, comparing it to the iPad 2 in drops from shoulder height and waist height. It should be noted that Apple has a new $99 AppleCare+ plan that covers accidental damage, for a $49 deductible. It’s good that the SquareTrade folks can take care of their own warranties, though, as I doubt their use counts as “accidental.”

I don’t want to spoil all the fun, but it’s fair to say you’ve never seen this many pixels tortured so much:

The new iPad offers dramatically increased cellular speed and one of the most spectacular displays ever seen in a mobile device.

Apple’s iPad could be described as a personal display through which you see and manipulate text, graphics, photos and videos often delivered via the Internet. So, how has the company chosen to improve its wildly popular tablet? By making that display dramatically better and making the delivery of content dramatically faster.

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=029F9BF8-4FF8-45F0-8859-72C2AD86C95C&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

There are other changes in the new, third-generation iPad — called simply “iPad,” with no number, which goes on sale on Friday at the same base price as its predecessor, $499. But the key upgrades are to those core features — the 9.7-inch screen and the data speed over cellular networks. These upgrades are massive. Using the new display is like getting a new eyeglasses prescription — you suddenly realize what you thought looked sharp before wasn’t nearly as sharp as it could be.

Boosting those particular features — the screen and the cellular speed — usually has a negative impact on battery life in a digital device. But Apple has managed to crank them up them while maintaining the long battery life between charges that has helped give the iPad such an edge over other tablets.

Objects, like the trees in this photo of Glacier National Park in Montana that Walt made his screen wallpaper, look sharper on the new iPad.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t other trade-offs. Mostly to make room for a larger battery, the new iPad weighs about 8% more and is about 7% thicker than the prior model. That means the company can’t claim to have the thinnest and lightest tablet, as it boasted last year with the iPad 2. (It’s still thinner and lighter than the original iPad.)

I’ve been testing the new iPad, and despite these trade-offs, its key improvements strengthen its position as the best tablet on the market. Apple hasn’t totally revamped the iPad or added loads of new features. But it has improved it significantly, at the same price.

It has the most spectacular display I have ever seen in a mobile device. The company squeezed four times the pixels into the same physical space as on the iPad 2 and claims the new iPad’s screen has a million more pixels than an HDTV. All I know is that text is much sharper, and photos look richer.

If you already own an iPad 2, and like it, you shouldn’t feel like you have to rush out to buy the new one. However, for those who use their iPads as their main e-readers, and those who use it frequently while away from Wi-Fi coverage, this new model could make a big difference.

The optional, extra-cost, 4G LTE cellular-data capability made it feel like I was always on a fast Wi-Fi connection. I loved the photos and videos I took with the greatly improved rear camera. And the battery life degraded by just 11 minutes, a figure that is still much better than on any tablet I’ve tested.

Letters that seemed sharp on the iPad 2, far left, suddenly felt fuzzier when compared with the new iPad’s ‘retina’ display, left. (It’s hard to reproduce on a web page.)

Along with the unmatched collection of 200,000 third-party programs designed for its large screen, and the large catalogs of music, books, periodicals and video content available for it, I can recommend the new iPad to consumers as their best choice in a general-purpose tablet.

The exceptions would be people who prefer a smaller size for one-handed use, or those who find the weight a burden. While the weight gain was noticeable, I didn’t find it a problem even for long reading or video-watching sessions. The extra thickness was barely discernible.

For the weight conscious, and for those who can’t swing the $499 entry cost, there is an out. Apple for the first time is making and selling the prior iPad model at a reduced price. The iPad 2 will now be available starting at $399, with just one choice of storage capacity — 16 gigabytes. The new iPad can be bought in 16, 32 or 64 GB capacities, at prices up to $829. The optional cellular capability costs the same as the slower 3G capability, both up front and in monthly fees from Verizon and AT&T.

The Display

It’s not as if people are complaining about the screens on their iPads, a device so attractive and useful that Apple sold about 55 million of them in two years. But this display is a big leap forward.

It’s hard to illustrate on a Web page or in print how brilliant this new display is. You have to see it. Apple calls it a “retina” display because, at normal viewing distance, there are so many pixels per inch, the human eye can’t pick them out individually. This display packs 264 pixels into every inch, twice as many as on iPad 2. Overall, the resolution is 2048 x 1536, versus 1024 x 768 for the iPad 2.

My epiphany came when I placed my iPad 2 next to the new model, with the same text on the screen. Letters and words that had seemed sharp on the older model five minutes earlier suddenly looked fuzzier.

As I tested the new model over five days, I found I was able to use smaller font sizes to read books and email. The same photos I had enjoyed on the older model looked much better on the new one, not only because of the increased resolution, but because Apple claims it increased color saturation by 44%. One thing Apple hasn’t fixed: like all glossy, LCD color displays, this one still does poorly in direct sunlight.

The new iPad’s 4G LTE cellular speeds are faster than many home Internet connections, as seen in this speed test showing how fast it would take to download data.

The Speed

The new iPad is hardly the first device to use 4G LTE cellular technology, but it marks a huge difference from the iPad 2. On Verizon’s network in Washington and Austin, Texas, I averaged LTE download speeds of over 17 megabits per second, faster than most home wired networks. A colleague using a new iPad on AT&T’s LTE network averaged over 12 mbps. My iPad 2 running Verizon’s 3G network averaged just over 1 mbps. Of course, you can get a Wi-Fi only model, at $130 less. The base $499 model is Wi-Fi only.

There is another dimension to speed: the overall responsiveness of the device. The new iPad is just as buttery smooth to use as the iPad 2. Apple beefed up the processor, especially its graphics capabilities.

The Battery

Apple claims up to 10 hours of battery life between charges, and up to nine hours if you are relying strictly on cellular connectivity. In my standard battery test, where I play videos back to back with both cellular and Wi-Fi on, and the screen at 75% brightness, the new iPad logged 9 hours and 58 minutes, compared with 10 hours and 9 minutes for the iPad 2. Other tablets died hours sooner in the same test. In more normal use, the new iPad lasted more than a full day, though not as long as the iPad 2 did.

The Rear Camera

Like the iPad 2, the third-generation iPad has front and rear cameras. The front camera, meant mainly for video chats, hasn’t changed. But the rear camera, which was awful for photos on the iPad 2, and was estimated at less than a single megapixel of resolution, has greatly improved. It’s now a 5-megapixel shooter with improved optics. I loved the photos and videos it took, indoors and out.

Other features

The new iPad is the first that can be used, like many smartphones, as a personal hot spot — a base station to connect laptops and other devices to the Internet. In my tests, this worked fine.

It also allows you to dictate, rather than type, emails and other text. I found this surprisingly accurate. And Apple now has a brilliant new version of its iPhoto software that has been rewritten for the iPad, reviewed this week by Katie Boehret.

Bottom Line

Since it launched in 2010, the iPad has been the best tablet on the planet. With the new, third-generation model, it still holds that crown.

An 8 gigabyte iPad 2, and a 7.85-inch iPad mini.

The Apple rumor mill has kicked into overdrive in advance of next week’s iPad event, pushing out a pair of speculative reports this morning about what lies in the company’s product pipeline.

The most plausible: Taiwanese trade mag Digitimes’ claim that Apple plans to sell a cheaper, 8 gigabyte iPad 2 alongside the iPad 3 in a play for the lower end of the tablet market being staked out by Amazon’s Kindle Fire. I’ve heard nothing about such a plan, but it makes good sense. A new, low-capacity iPad 2 — priced at, say, $299 or even $349 — could wreak havoc on the low-end tablet market, clearing out a raft of struggling competitors and making the choice between Kindle Fire and iPad a much more difficult one for those consumers weighing the two.

The second report, also from Digitimes, is far less credible and resurfaces long-running rumors that Apple is gearing up to produce a “mini” iPad, a 7.85-inch device to compete with the Kindle Fire and Nook, which have created some demand for tablets with 7-inch displays. It’s widely known that Apple has experimented with an 8-inch iPad that would have a screen resolution similar to the iPad 2. But that doesn’t mean the company intends to ever bring the device to market.

As I’ve noted here before, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was a harsh critic of 7-inch tablets.

“One naturally thinks that a 7-inch screen would offer 70 percent of the benefits of a 10-inch screen,” Jobs said during a 2010 earnings call. “Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. … The reason we [won't] make a 7-inch tablet isn’t because we don’t want to hit [a lower] price point, it’s because we think the screen is too small to express the software.”

With the debut of the next iteration of the iPad nearly upon us, some of Apple’s big-box retail partners are starting to clear out their iPad 2 inventory in preparation for its arrival.

On Sunday, Best Buy began offering an unusual $50 discount on all iPad models, dropping the price of the entry level Wi-Fi-only iPad to $449.99, and the price of the high-end 64 gigabyte Wi-Fi+3G device to $779.99.

And Best Buy isn’t the only retailer looking to clear out iPad 2 stock ahead of a refresh. Earlier this month, Meijer, a regional big-box retailer in the Midwest, knocked $70 off the 16GB iPad 2 with Wi-Fi, dropping its price to $429.

Meaty discounts, both of them, but better to offer $50 or $70 off now than be forced to hand out even steeper discounts after the iPad 3 debuts.

So much for the U.S. Air Force's big iPad buy.

So much for the U.S. Air Force’s big iPad buy.

The Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) on Wednesday canceled without explanation a plan to buy nearly 3,000 iPad 2s to be used as electronic flight bags.

Announced in January, the initiative would have seen AFSOC purchase 2,861 iPad 2 units for use in the Command’s fleet of surveillance aircraft and helicopter gunships. As in the commercial airline industry, the devices would have been used to replace 40 pounds of manuals and navigation charts typically carried by pilots and navigators.

That seems a sensible plan, and it’s not clear why AFSOC has scrapped it. Some theorize that the Command’s decision to outfit the iPads with GoodReader, a popular iPad document reader created by a Russian software developer, raised security concerns and questions about how well the plan had been vetted. Others wonder if the agency has simply postponed the initiative until the iPad 3 debuts.

According to AFSOC spokeswoman Capt. Kristen Duncan, the Command is still very much interested in using tablets to lighten the load of flight crews. “[The Command] continues to explore options to develop the electronic flight bag program,” she told Nextgov.co. “We continue to look at each component of the [electronic flight bag] program to ensure we do the right thing for our airmen, don’t introduce unnecessary risk into operations and provide the best tools available to conduct the mission.”

Apple shipped some 55 million iPads since first bringing the device to market. It took 22 years to sell that many Macs and three years to sell that many iPhones. What’s driving that hockey-stick ramp up, among the fastest of any product in history?

That question was put to Apple CEO Tim Cook at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference Tuesday, and he had an interesting answer for it. The iPad’s trajectory is driven by the products that came before it.

“The pace of innovation around iPad is absolutely incredible,” Cook said. “We’ve gone from iPad 1 to iPad 2 in very short order, and the eocsystem around it is clearly thriving. The reason the iPad’s ramp has been so large in my view is that the iPad has stood on the shoulders of everything that came before it — the iTunes store, the iPhone. People trained on these products so by the time the iPad launched it was intuitive to use. I gave one to my mother and she knew how to use it, like this, just from watching the commercial.”

A decade ago, you could have purchased Apple stock for around $10 a share. Today, Apple is trading at more than 50 times that, its price driven upward by the company’s monster holiday quarter and the seemingly unstoppable momentum of the iOS juggernaut.

As I write this, AAPL is trading at well over $503 per share, after closing above $500 — for the first time — on Monday. That’s $3 more than the cost of a 16 gigabyte iPad 2. The company’s market cap is currently $469 billion, and if/when its stock reaches $537, Apple will become a half-trillion dollar company.

And if its ascent continues after that? Another $100 or so more, and Apple could claim the title of most valuable company of all time, beating Microsoft’s record of $650 billion during the dotcom bubble.

Which app do you recommend for using on the iPad 2 for opening Microsoft Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint?)

A:

If you literally just want to open the documents to read them, you don’t need any apps. The iPad comes with built-in viewers for Microsoft Office files. However, for opening, storing and editing the files, I like two products. One is called Quickoffice Pro HD, which costs $20 and handles all three types of files you cite, and more. The other is the tablet version of Apple’s iWork suite, which is sold as three separate apps for $10 each—Pages for word processing, Numbers for spreadsheets and Keynote for presentations.

This also would be a good place to note that there are reports, unconfirmed by the company, that Microsoft is considering releasing an iPad version of Office itself. I have no evidence this will happen.

Q:

Do any of your recommended Ultrabooks run Office?

A:

All Ultrabooks run Microsoft Office. While Ultrabooks are thin and light, they are full-blown Windows laptops running the latest Intel processors, and in my tests, they ran Office very well, just as well as many heavier, thicker laptops I’ve reviewed.

My son was told by an Apple phone representative that the iCloud service cannot handle our full iTunes library of 6,000 songs, and it will only sync with your hand-held, wireless devices.

That’s inaccurate. ITunes Match handles 25,000 songs and syncs with Macs, PCs (if they’re running iTunes), the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Important new products and services—including Ultrabooks, cloud computing and Android devices—raised questions and anticipation for the year ahead.

While other industries struggled, consumer technology seemed to march ahead as always in 2011, with important new products and services continuing to roll out. Sure, some tech companies, like BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, suffered reverses. And some products, like Hewlett-Packard’s TouchPad, flopped. But many shone.

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=3D1F1099-AFDF-42CB-9468-76EB87C4DBC8&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

So here is a look at a few of the biggest tech products of the past year, with some analysis of what they signified and what issues they raise for 2012. As with all my columns, this one is focused only on products and services provided to consumers. Also, as usual, this column isn’t meant to offer investment advice or to evaluate the management skills or financial condition of companies.

The iDevices

Siri, right, the voice-controlled artificial-intelligence system, made the iPhone 4S stand out even though it looked like its predecessor.

Even in a year when its iconic leader, Steve Jobs, resigned as CEO and then passed away, Apple kept going from success to success. In March, it introduced the iPad 2, a thinner, lighter, faster version of its groundbreaking tablet and sold tens of millions of them. In October, it brought out the iPhone 4S, which proved popular even though it looked identical to the prior model. One reason: The phone introduced a voice-controlled artificial-intelligence system called Siri that answers questions and performs tasks without requiring typing or searching. Siri, while still rudimentary, could herald a revolution in practical artificial intelligence for consumers.

The lesson here is that Apple is driving the industry toward simpler, more reliable digital experiences tied into ecosystems of content and cloud services. It is expected to bring out radically new iPhones and iPads in 2012. But can it fend off challenges from popular, rapidly improving rivals using Google’s Android operating system? And, in the absence of Mr. Jobs, can it keep churning out game-changing hits?

With its ultralow price and Amazon connection, the Kindle Fire may be the first tablet to gain significant traction against the iPad.

The Kindle Fire

Despite some initial software flaws and its chunky, plain hardware, the diminutive Fire appeared to be the first color tablet to gain significant traction against the iPad. The biggest reasons are its ultralow $199 price and its tie-in to Amazon’s huge content library. But the Fire may have started a trend that could be a problem for Google: It demotes the Android operating system to an under-the-covers piece of plumbing, ignoring Google’s user interface and apps marketplace.

In 2012, Amazon is expected to bring out a larger, possibly sleeker Fire, and, if it continues to prove popular, it could attract larger numbers of apps designed for the Fire and sold only through Amazon. But despite its success with simple e-readers, Amazon has little experience as a maker of general-purpose computing devices, and it will have to be nimble and creative to keep up with Apple and more-traditional Android rivals.

LTE

Though several cellular technologies claim the moniker “4G” to indicate fast data speeds and greater capacity, only one, LTE (Long Term Evolution), delivers true broadband speeds consistently. This past year, it finally spread significantly in the U.S., both in terms of geography and in the number of devices supporting it. The LTE leader by far is Verizon Wireless and it has the potential to make the wireless Web, and wireless streaming of video, the equal of their wired counterparts. AT&T is racing to catch up and Sprint, which uses a different 4G system, says it will join the LTE parade.

But at this stage, LTE still consumes too much battery power. And LTE networks, if they become the norm, could get overwhelmed. To fend off this prospect, the biggest carriers in 2011 began charging more for greater data usage, a move that could curb the spread of innovative services that rely on large data downloads, such as video streaming and sharing of music and high-resolution photos.

More companies took advantage of cloud computing, with Google introducing the Chromebook, which relies almost entirely on the cloud.

The Cloud

Many players began offering consumers the opportunity to both store their data on, and run apps from, remote servers on the Internet, a system called cloud computing. Google even introduced a new kind of laptop, the Chromebook, that has almost no internal storage and relies almost entirely on the cloud. An example of a cloud service: music “lockers” that store all your songs on multiple devices. Cloud services are sure to expand in 2012, but questions remain on their reliability, security and privacy. And while most now cost little or nothing, these offerings could become another monthly fee burden for consumers.

Android became easier to use with the release of the Ice Cream Sandwich version, used in the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

The Android Army

In 2011, Android overtook Apple’s iPhone and iPad operating system, called iOS, in users. Though no single Android device is as popular as the iPhone or iPad, Android is now the collective leader, with hundreds of devices using it. Samsung, in particular, had success with its Android-based Galaxy devices. And a new version, called Ice Cream Sandwich, continued Android’s steady improvement by making it easier to use. However, Google may be losing control of Android, as hardware makers and cellular carriers redefine it to suit their own needs, and fail to offer consumers updates in a timely fashion. Except for the Kindle Fire, the operating system hasn’t caught on in tablets.

Windows

Microsoft has been way behind in the new areas of super-smartphones and tablets. In 2011, the software giant began to try to reverse that situation. It introduced the first competitive version of its sleek, sophisticated Windows Phone software, called Mango, though so far without much uptake by consumers. And it previewed a bold new version of main Windows, called Windows 8, with a multitouch interface that, unlike Apple’s approach, is a single operating system meant for both PCs and tablets. It will start shipping in 2012.

Following in the Apple MacBook Air’s footsteps, a crop of thin and speedy ultrabooks, such as the Toshiba Portege Z835, pictured, became the new standard for laptops, with Windows PC makers coming up with their own versions of the machines.

Still, Windows Phone must somehow attract many more users. And Windows 8 is a gamble, because it includes two interfaces: the new tabletlike face and the old, familiar Windows look, which could confuse consumers.

Ultrabooks

In 2011, Apple’s MacBook Air, previously a niche product, became the new standard for laptops—thin, light, speedy, with long battery life and solid-state memory for storage instead of a hard disk. Now, Windows PC makers are following suit with similar machines called Ultrabooks.

Ultrabooks may recharge the Windows laptop scene in 2012. However, they will have to become less costly—they now hover at around $1,000—and their solid-state drives don’t offer the capacity of hard disks at an affordable price.

The Lenovo IdeaPad U300

Television

The reinvention of television picked up steam in 2011, albeit in a small way. Despite some miscues, Netflix streaming of TV shows to many devices grew in popularity. Set-top boxes that bring Internet video to TVs, like the Roku box and Apple TV, got better and more popular, though Google’s competing effort was a dud. Microsoft’s Xbox is set to compete strongly, using its Kinect add-on to find and play media apps with gestures and voice commands.

The big test may come in 2012, when Apple is believed to plan to ship a whole new type of Internet-connected TV, which the company hasn’t confirmed. A big obstacle: Cable and media companies will have a huge say in this potential revolution, and the current system serves them well.

So, 2011 was an exciting year in consumer technology. I can’t wait for 2012.

Apple’s next quarter may be the best in company history, driven by what Ticonderoga analyst Brian White says was its “best November ever.”

White’s checks with Apple’s top Taiwan-based suppliers show a massive spike in component orders for the month — well above anything previously charted.

Typically, Apple’s supply chain shows a 2 percent increase in sales from month to month. But this past November, sales rose 17 percent.

That’s a more than an 8x increase.

Which obviously suggests some pretty strong demand trends in the run-up to the holiday shopping season. And Apple is certainly well poised to exploit them. As White observes, “The company’s portfolio for the holiday season is the hottest we have ever seen with the new iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and MacBook Air.”

So Apple’s first quarter will likely be a big one. And it will likely set a new record. Which means 2011 will be much like 2010, and 2009 before it. The fourth quarter of the calendar year has always been Apple’s strongest. No reason to believe it will be any different this year.

Notes in the margins of e-books could be the next platform for social interaction. At least that's what Amsterdam-based start-up Openmargin is hoping.

Back in college, there was this trick to buying used books for class: If you were smart, you’d flip through and look in the margins to see how good the notes were.

The idea was, why not get good help, even if it’s anonymous? (Even Harry Potter did it.)

Openmargin, a start-up based in the Netherlands, is employing the old used-textbook trick to bring a similar experience to just about any e-book around.

The company of three co-founders has built an iPad app, also called Openmargin, which allows users to create marginalia in their e-books, by indexing notes they take and comments they share to a highlighted area.

Anyone else using the Openmargin app to read the same e-book will see the highlights and be able to drill down into the comments.

“We started the company with the goal of helping users interact with people of similar interests,” co-founder Marc Köhlbrugge said. “And we chose the margins of a book as the place where people can connect.”

At scale, that could mean downloading an e-book, opening it inside the Openmargin app, and discovering all kinds of shared thoughts, debates and conversations that had been “hidden” in the e-book you’d had all along.

But scale is a long way off.

What Openmargin is reaching for is what social networking types call the “interest graph,” which is a buzzwordy way of saying stuff people like enough to talk about.”

Openmargin’s bet is that books are a natural fit for this emerging generation of topic-based, ad hoc social interactions, because books are full of ideas that can be discussed.

“I really don’t want to bring up the comparison to Color,” Köhlbrugge said, referencing the failed social image-sharing app, “but part of what they were trying to do was link people who don’t know each other around an experience. For us, that’s the book.”

But Openmargin, like many companies attempting to create in copyright-heavy industries, faces a hard reality — there are big rights-holders who want big profits, and it’s a long road to partnership.

Today, Openmargin is avoiding the issue by only offering its services around e-texts that don’t have any rights management restrictions — known as DRM-free. That means it will work for any texts in the public domain, and most books published under the various Creative Commons licenses.

That’s still a very small subset of books — especially on big e-book sites such as Amazon and Apple — which makes it a very large problem for Openmargin moving forward.

Köhlbrugge and crew are all based in Amsterdam, where the three-year road to start-up life has looked a little different than it might had they lived in Silicon Valley.

The company was initially funded not by angel investors, but by a national government grant for companies making innovations that were “culturally relevant,” Köhlbrugge said.

The company still hasn’t taken any private investment, but is now seeking another grant to make its first full-time engineering hires.

As it grows, Köhlbrugge’s hope is that Openmargin can avoid being “just another service that plugs into Facebook and shows you those friends.”

“The real hope is to show you not just opinions of people you know and agree with,” he said, “but to connect you with people who care about the same things, even if they don’t share your views.”

Here is a video interview I did with Openmargin’s co-founder, Marc Köhlbrugge:

Will Apple's December quarter still bring an all-time record for iPad sales?

When it last reported earnings, Apple said it expected iPad shipments to see an “all-time” record in the December quarter. With Amazon’s Kindle Fire newly arrived at market and evidently selling pretty well, and with reports of Apple cutting back on iPad 2 component orders in advance of the launch of a new iPad beginning to make the rounds, will Apple still attain that goal?

It’s a safe bet.

Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes says that while the debut of the Fire will obviously have some effect on the U.S. tablet market, it won’t have much impact on the iPad market.

“We believe the $199 Kindle Fire from Amazon has ‘paused’ some level of tablet demand in the U.S. given its disruptive price point and that customers are even starting to realize that the iPad is likely to be upgraded in the C1Q (as usual),” Reitzes says. “Our research … points toward C4Q11 production in the lower double digit millions range after a mid-teens iPad build in C3Q11.”

Importantly, Reitzes says even that tweaked build rate still backs his iPad unit sale estimate of 13.9 million for the December quarter. So, in his eyes, Apple will deliver on those “all-time” record iPad shipments.

And as for the Fire?

Well, it’s still quite new. And the tablet market will certainly change again with the expected debut of the iPad 3 next year.

“The jury is still out on the Amazon Fire,” Reitzes writes. “We believe the iPad still stands out as the industry standard in terms of software integration. Some of the early reviews for the Fire are less than flattering. We believe that iPad is set for a new product cycle in FY12, which will reaccelerate the category.”

Walt answers a reader's question about using the iPad as a cellphone.

Q:

If I buy an iPad 2 that includes Verizon or AT&T service do I need a contract, and will this allow the iPad to be used as a cellphone?

A:

The Verizon and AT&T plans for iPads are month-to-month deals, not long-term contracts. You can choose never to activate them, or to turn them on and off based on your needs. These plans are for data only, however. They don’t endow your iPad with cellular voice calling capability. More information is here.

Q:

What is the PC equivalent to a MacBook Air? I’m tempted to get an Air but virtually everything I have is on a PC.

A:

There’s a new type of Windows laptop generically called an Ultrabook that’s aimed at emulating the MacBook Air’s speed, lightness and battery life. I haven’t reviewed them yet, so I can’t recommend one. But two examples are the Acer Aspire S series and the Lenovo IdeaPad U 300s.

Q:

Is the Siri on the iPhone 4S different from the Siri app I downloaded awhile back on my iPhone 4?

A:

Apple bought Siri soon after the original small company launched that app. Apple decided to incorporate it into the phone’s base software. There are some differences, but the functionality is similar. However, the old Siri app is no longer available, and, if you have it, you can no longer connect to the servers that make it work.
