In addition to the new iPhone 4S, Apple plans to keep the iPhone 4 around at $99 and will offer the iPhone 3GS for free in the U.S., with a new two-year contract.

Best Buy said that it plans to offer Apple’s eight gigabyte iPhone 3GS for free on Monday, for customers that sign up for or upgrade to a new two-year AT&T contract.
The deal is valid in-store only at Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile.

Though they’ve been surpassed in design and perfomance by their successors, Apple’s iPhone 3Gs and iPad 1 are still quite popular–-so popular, in fact, that they outsell some of their newer Android rivals.

Buoyed by the launch of the Verizon iPhone, Apple gained nine points of smartphone market share in the first quarter and became the third-largest seller of phones in the U.S. overall, according to new figures from NPD. Meanwhile, for the first time, more than half of U.S. consumers opted for a smartphone when buying a new handset.
