<p>According to sources close to the situation, Apple is planning an important &#8212; but not large-scale &#8212; event to be held in New York at the end of this month that will focus on a media-related announcement. </p>
<p>Per the usual caveat, the tech giant is well known for moving around their public show-and-tells, so this could certainly change at any moment.</p>
<p>But, for sure, several sources underscored that the event is not related to an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111223/2012-ipad-roadmap-dont-expect-a-7-incher/">upcoming version of the iPad 3</a>, the next iteration of the popular tablet device that many expect to be available in 2012.</p>
<p>Also unlikely, the rollout of Apple&#8217;s large-scale rethinking of the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111227/supply-chain-chatter-has-two-apple-tvs-targeted-for-midyear-launch/">interactive television initiative</a> that it has been working on. While the company is expected to launch a new Apple TV product later in 2012, such an event would almost certainly be held in the heart of the industry in Hollywood or at least in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>That leaves some kind of advertising or even publishing announcement, which might be the case, since Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue is reportedly involved. </p>
<p>Cue is in charge of a large swath of Apple&#8217;s media units, including the iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, as well as iAd and its iCloud services.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s well known in the ad industry that Apple has been searching for a new head of its mobile advertising unit, since <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110817/apples-mobile-ad-head-andy-miller-departs-for-highand-capital/">Andy Miller</a> left last summer.</p>
<p>But such an appointment has not been made as yet, said sources.</p>
<p>The last time Cue was in New York for an event, by the way, was nearly a year ago, when Apple helped launch News Corp.&#8217;s online magazine, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110202/live-from-the-dailys-debut/">The Daily</a>.</p>
<p>And Apple also recently opened a splashy new retail store in <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110817/apples-mobile-ad-head-andy-miller-departs-for-highand-capital/">Manhattan&#8217;s Grand Central Terminal</a>, and has been refurbishing its flagship glass cube on Fifth Avenue, too.</p>
<p>The holiday-having Apple PR team declined comment, but wished me a &#8220;happy, happy new year.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/08/headphones.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-22878" title="headphones" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/08/headphones-275x155.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="155" /></a>When will Apple launch a cloud-based version of the iTunes music service that lets you stream your songs to wherever you are, whenever you want?</p>
<p>Probably not at <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100825/apples-annual-autumn-event-falls-on-sept-1/">Apple&#8217;s newest product launch next week</a>. But music executives say they do expect a big overhaul of the iTunes music store. And we could see <em>that</em> next Wednesday. Think social, not streaming.</p>
<p>Industry executives tell me Apple (AAPL) has yet to approach the big labels for new license deals, which they say Steve Jobs and company would need if they want to run a streaming &#8220;locker&#8221; service. But Apple can do interesting things at iTunes without new label deals.</p>
<p>Apple plays its cards close to the vest even with the music labels it works with, so the people I&#8217;ve talked to are making informed guesses. That said, music sources tell me they&#8217;re expecting a lightweight, Web-based version of the iTunes store. The new version would be designed to synch up easily with the rest of the Internet and make it much easier for customers to share their musical tastes (but not songs) with friends.</p>
<p>Right now, you can get to the iTunes store only by using a downloaded program on your Mac or iPhone/iPod/iPad. But a Web-based version would allow buyers to get there without having to quit other applications. And if Apple makes it easier for services like Twitter and Facebook to link into the store and share recommendations, playlists and the like, then you can imagine some pretty interesting possibilities.</p>
<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a reason Steve Jobs calls it an iPod&#8211;he thinks you listen to music by yourself, on your headphones,&#8221; says a label executive. &#8220;But lots of people like to share music, and if this lets you do that, that&#8217;s exciting.&#8221;</p>
<p>Some label executives also speculate about a wireless system that makes it easier for you to manage iTunes purchases. In theory, Apple could make it possible for you to move a copy of a song you bought on your iPhone onto your laptop without having to manually connect the two devices.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s license already allows users to synch their music on five devices at a time. So that wouldn&#8217;t require a new deal, just new technology. But it&#8217;s not the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100803/itunes-in-the-cloud-is-still-m-i-a-may-stay-that-way/">&#8220;jukebox in the sky&#8221;</a> that many techies are <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100601/apple-pulls-the-plug-on-lala-replaces-it-with-nothing/">eager</a> to <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100430/waiting-for-itunes-com-dont-hold-your-breath/">see</a>.</p>
<p>Caveat: It&#8217;s possible, but not probable, that Apple goes ahead and launches a more ambitious locker/streaming service without the approval from labels.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s what small start-ups like <a href="http://www.mspot.com/">mSpot</a> are already doing. And subscription service <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100803/emusic-gets-a-new-ceo-wants-more-customers-too/">eMusic has announced that it will launch its own locker service next year</a>, and that it doesn&#8217;t plan on paying the labels any additional fee when it does.</p>
<p>But Apple is working very hard to persuade big media companies to let it sell their stuff. (It intends to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-08-24/apple-said-to-be-in-talks-with-fox-for-new-99-cent-tv-show-rental-service.html">announce a TV show rental service next Wednesday</a>, though industry sources say most of the big networks still haven&#8217;t signed on.) Launching a new product while the labels squawk doesn&#8217;t seem to be a great way to go about it.</p>

<p>Apple&#8217;s first quarter was a blowout, as was the one before it. So too is the company&#8217;s latest. Reporting second-quarter earnings after the bell Tuesday, Apple rolled out the big numbers once again. The company posted a profit of $3.07 billion on revenue that rose 49 percent to $13.5 billion. Earnings per share were $3.33, far more than the $2.45 per share analysts had been expecting. </p>
<p>Apple (AAPL) said it sold 8.75 million iPhones for the quarter, up more than 131 percent from the year prior; 2.94 million Macs, up 33 percent; and nearly 10.9 million iPods, down one percent. Strong numbers, all. Even iPod sales beat the Street&#8217;s consensus of nine million units shipped. </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re thrilled to report our best non-holiday quarter ever, with revenues up 49 percent and profits up 90 percent,&#8221; <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2010/04/20results.html">CEO Steve Jobs said</a> in another variation of the statement the company has sent out so many times before. &#8220;We&#8217;ve launched our revolutionary new iPad and users are loving it, and we have several more extraordinary products in the pipeline for this year.&#8221;</p>
<p>At $261.36, Apple shares are up nearly seven percent in after-hours trading.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s earnings release below as well as notes from the earnings call.</p>
<p><b>Notes From the Call</b></p>
<ul>
<li>During introductory remarks, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer pointed out that sales of Macs outpaced those of PCs. According to IDC, PC sales grew 24 percent during March quarter. Mac sales rose 33 percent.
</li>
<li>iPod touch sales grew 63 percent year-over-year. Apple controls over 70 percent of  the U.S. market for digital media players. </li>
<li>
Apple’s iTunes Store generated $1.1 billion in sales (music, video and apps). Some four billion apps have been downloaded to date. There are currently 3,500 apps for iPad.</li>
<li>Retail store revenue was $1.68 billion, a 22 percent increase. The company sold 606,000 Macs through its retail outlets, an increase of 38 percent. Half of those were sold were to customers who never owned a Mac before. Apple plans to open 40 to 50 new stores in fiscal 2010.</li>
<li>Didn&#8217;t quite catch it, but there was some mention of a &#8220;future product transition.&#8221; Not sure what this refers to, but certainly interesting.</li>
<li>This was the best quarter ever for iPhone sales&#8211;131 percent year-over-year growth. That’s three times the growth IDC has estimated for the smartphone market as a whole.</li>
<li>Are folks who would  have bought Macs now buying iPads instead? Apple COO Tim Cook said the company hasn&#8217;t seen any Mac cannibalization yet. He also said it&#8217;s far too early to tell which version of the device&#8211;Wi-Fi-only or Wi-Fi plus 3G&#8211;is selling better.</li>
<li>iPhone units shipped in the Asia-Pacific region were up year-over-year more than nine times, Cook said. &#8220;Through the first half of the fiscal year, our revenue from greater China was over 1.13 billion,&#8221; he added. &#8220;That’s up over 200 percent year-over-year.&#8221;
</li>
<li>On iAds: &#8220;We&#8217;re just putting our toes in the water, so don&#8217;t expect much from us this calendar year.&#8221;</li>
<li>Remarking on the company’s iPhone exclusivity agreements, Cook said that in those markets where Apple has moved from exclusive to nonexclusive, it has seen its unit share and market share improve. No comment on whether or not the company will end iPhone exclusivity in the U.S.
 </li>
<li>Cook: &#8220;We think the market size for the iPad is very large.&#8221;</li>
<li>Asked about the delayed international launch of the iPad, Cook said there isn&#8217;t &#8220;a production problem per se&#8230;but the level of demand has shocked us, at least initially.&#8221;
</li>
<li>Apple is still happy with AT&#038;T (T) and its network? AT&#038;T has made &#8220;big strides,&#8221; he noted, adding that &#8220;we look forward to continued improvement.&#8221;
 </li>
<li>Cook on Apple TV: &#8220;It&#8217;s still a hobby for us.&#8221; </li>
<li>Cook on iPad versus netbook: &#8220;I can&#8217;t think of a single thing the netbook does well&#8230;.To me it&#8217;s a no-brainer that someone would buy an iPad over a netbook.</li>
<li>Are consumers buying different kinds of apps for the iPad than for the iPhone? Too early to tell, though app sales and book sales are both quite strong.</li>
<li>Question about the &#8220;extraordinary products&#8221; Apple mentioned in its earnings release. No comment. “We’re not going to help our competitors by answering that,” said Oppenheimer.</li>

<p>Apple sold 2.94 million Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing a 33 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 8.75 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 131 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 10.89 million iPods during the quarter, representing a one percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> Can the iPad can be used totally on its own, or must you sync it with another computer? If I bought an iPad for my grandmother, who has no other computer, would she be able to just download apps and music and rent movies solely via the iTunes Store on the iPad?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>Yes, but with a catch. Based on what Apple (AAPL) has said, iPad owners will be able to buy apps, music and books, and buy and rent video, right on the device, without requiring a PC or Mac running iTunes software. You can also synchronize contacts, email and calendar items over the air, from an online source, instead of over a cable from your computer.</p>
<p>However, Apple&#8217;s Web site suggests you&#8217;ll need to connect to a computer running iTunes in order to back up the iPad, and, if the iPhone is any guide, you will likely need to do the same to upgrade the iPad&#8217;s operating system whenever Apple updates it. </p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I enjoyed your article on the two new Lenovo computers you&#8217;ve tested. The ThinkPad Edge sounds like a machine that will suit my needs quite well. You mentioned in the article that the machine you tested was upgraded from the base model. What were the specifications of your test machine?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>The $799 model I tested differs from the $579 base model by having a more powerful Intel (INTC) processor; 4 gigabytes of memory instead of 2 gigabytes; a 320-gigabyte hard disk versus 250 gigabytes; a different graphics card and a higher-capacity battery. <p class="mailbox-question"><em> In your column of March 18, you gave the advice: &#8220;There are easier ways to erase all cookies, by using a function in your Web browser.&#8221; How do you do this?</em></p>

<p>In Internet Explorer 8, select the Safety menu, choose &#8220;Delete Browsing History,&#8221; uncheck everything but &#8220;Cookies,&#8221; and click &#8220;Delete.&#8221; In Firefox 3.6, select the Tools menu, and then &#8220;Clear Recent History.&#8221; Then click &#8220;Details,&#8221; uncheck everything but &#8220;Cookies,&#8221; and pick &#8220;Everything&#8221; from the time range list. </p>
<p>In Safari 4.0, go to Preferences, then &#8220;Security,&#8221; then &#8220;Show Cookies,&#8221; then choose &#8220;Remove All.&#8221;</p>

And it <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090424/apple-hits-1-billion-downloads-newspapers-celebrate/">frequently</a> <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090928/apples-apps-flying-off-the-virtual-shelves-6-6-million-downloads-per-day/">boasts</a> about the number of apps customers download from iTunes, as well&#8211;the tally is now past three billion.</p>
<p>But you won&#8217;t hear Apple boast about how much money it&#8217;s making from iTunes. Because there&#8217;s not much to boast about.</p>
<p>Even at today&#8217;s hyper volume, the digital store is still running at &#8220;a bit over break-even,&#8221; the company reminded analysts during its earnings call last month.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the relevant excerpt from that call, via <a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/184328-apple-inc-f1q10-qtr-end-12-26-09-earnings-call-transcript?page=-1">Seeking Alpha</a> (thanks to Venrock&#8217;s <a href="http://pakman.com/">David Pakman</a> for pointing this out yesterday at the <a href="http://www.digitalmusicforum.com/east/">Digital Music Forum East</a>):</p>

We have seen a number of industry revenue forecasts for applications and just given kind of the expected explosive growth there I am just wondering if that is still a break-evenish type of business as you look forward over the next couple of years?&#8230;</p>

&#8230;Regarding the App Store and the iTunes stores, we are running those a bit over break even and that hasn’t changed. We are very excited to be providing our developers with a fabulous opportunity and we think that is helping us a lot with the iPhone and the iPod touch platform.</p></blockquote>
<p>As Oppenheimer says, this isn&#8217;t a new development. Apple (AAPL) has always maintained that iTunes wasn&#8217;t a real money maker. It&#8217;s supposed to help sell iPods, iPhones, and soon, iPads.</p>
<p>For years, industry observers figured that as the iTunes business scaled, this would change. An alternate theory, held by some of Apple&#8217;s media partners&#8211;the company was being overly modest about its success.</p>
<p>Apple doesn&#8217;t break out iTunes sales, but lumps them into a category called &#8220;Other music related products and services,&#8221; which generated net sales of $4 billion last year. That&#8217;s an increase of 21 percent over 2008, and the company attributed this growth to &#8220;increased net sales of third-party digital content and applications from the iTunes Store.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s about the software, stupid. While all sorts of commentators were focusing on how much Apple&#8217;s new $499 iPad tablet computer looks like an oversized iPhone, the key to whether it can be the first multi-function tablet to win wide public acceptance probably lies in whether consumers perceive it as a suitable replacement for a laptop in key scenarios. And that, in my view, depends heavily on the software and services that flow through its handsome little body.</p>
<p>I have only spent a short time hands-on with the iPad&#8211;too short to fully run it through its paces and formally review it yet. But, after attending the rollout of the new device today, and trying out some of its features for myself, I have some first impressions.</p>

<p>Apple CEO Steve Jobs positioned the iPad as belonging to a new category of device between the smartphone and the laptop (since the netbook, in his view and mine, is really just a small, cheap laptop). But, as the demos unfolded, I kept thinking it was more like a hybrid of the two. </p>
<p>It uses the iPhone&#8217;s basic user interface and physical design. But, taking advantage of a 9.7&#8243; screen and a fast Apple-designed processor, the iPad adds some user interface elements and functionality that aren&#8217;t available&#8211;or at least typical&#8211;on smart phones, but look more like computer software. For instance, its photo program works more like iPhoto on a Mac than the photo app on an iPhone, and it will be available with a touch version of Apple&#8217;s iWork productivity suite, which is Apple&#8217;s take on Microsoft Office. This is a much more powerful program than the phone-based office suites for the iPhone or BlackBerry, and Apple (AAPL) is only charging $30 for it.</p>

<p>Also, Apple has rewritten most of the core iPhone apps so they look more like, and have more of the features of, Mac or PC programs. But they aren&#8217;t mere clones of full computer apps. For instance, many forego standard menus for clever overlays and sidebars that work more naturally with the iPad&#8217;s multi-touch interface. Other app developers can do this, too. But, even if they don&#8217;t, the company said the iPad will run most of the current 140,000 iPhone apps, either in a small window on the screen, or in a full-screen mode. That&#8217;s a huge plus for a new device.</p>

<p>Mr. Jobs said after the onstage program ended that he sees the iPad&#8217;s user interface as a fuller expression of the one on the iPhone, which had been limited by screen real estate.</p>
<p>And, although the reported video and music streaming services were nowhere to be seen at this preview, Mr. Jobs did offer a taste of how the iPad could deliver content, beyond simply downloads from the iTunes store. He showed off a new e-book reader app with built-in online book store that, visually at least, blew away the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle, even if it seemed to lack all of the Kindle&#8217;s features and may have a smaller catalog. Representatives of the New York Times (NYT) showed an iPad digital version of their newspaper that seemed vastly more usable than the clumsy version now on the Kindle and its ilk.</p>
<p>So, the iPad is more than just a giant iPod Touch or iPhone, even though it looks like one. But the question is, will that be enough to get consumers to shell out for it, and make it part of their daily lives? Or will it be a niche product, like Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Tablet PC or Mr. Jobs&#8217; own Apple TV?</p>

<p>On the plus side, the device is handsome, feels comfortable and solid to hold, and has all that beautiful software built in. Oh, and it&#8217;s amazingly low-priced for an Apple product, with that modest $499 price tag for a base version with 16 gigabytes of memory and Wi-Fi, but no cell phone data connectivity. (A fully loaded model with 64 gigabytes, Wi-Fi and a no-contract 3G cellular data plan is $829, and there are variations in between.)</p>
<p>It also boasts a decent 10 hours of battery life, and Mr, Jobs told me after the event that, for some functions, like playing video and music, the battery should last even longer. </p>
<p>But there are minuses. First, since it&#8217;s too big to go in a pocket, people might perceive it as just another thing to carry around, despite the fact that it&#8217;s only a half inch thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds. It also lacks a common and popular laptop feature&#8211;a web cam. So, it can&#8217;t be used for video chats or for the creation of web videos.</p>

<p>Also, the carrier for the iPad&#8217;s 3G plan is the deeply unpopular AT&#038;T&#8211;there were groans and boos among Mr. Jobs&#8217; otherwise excited audience when this was announced. AT&#038;T is offering bargain prices for iPad data service compared to what it charges laptop owners. But its network is overwhelmed in many big cities and many iPhone lovers, who are strong candidates to buy an iPad, curse the carrier daily.</p>
<p>Finally, while it&#8217;s too early for me to say without lots of testing, the size of the iPad&#8217;s virtual keyboard may be a liability. I found it almost too wide for thumb typing, and a colleague who&#8217;s a whiz at touch typing and tried it briefly found it awkward to type on. Apple is offering an auxiliary physical keyboard that docks with, and charges, the iPad. But you won&#8217;t want to lug that around.</p>
<p>Still, the software looked impressive, and that could help Steve Jobs do the one thing even he has never done in an amazing career: get the public to love not just a better version of an existing type of gadget, but a whole new category of gadget.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Despite the popularity of music downloads or streamed music through online services like Pandora, the good old radio is still a source of entertainment for many people. It turns on as soon as the car starts and inspires shower singers every morning. Plus, it works pretty much the same as it has for decades.</p>
<p>The trusty radio has finally received an upgrade—to the world of high definition. HD Radio, which has been gathering steam for a few years, sounds better and offers more channels than traditional radio. It also sends properly equipped devices text data like a song&#8217;s title and artist name as well as traffic, weather and stock information. One HD Radio even lets you pause programming in mid-stream, so you don&#8217;t have to miss a song or NPR story just because you&#8217;re drying your hair. And future HD Radio devices will record programming like television DVRs do now.</p>

<p>This week, I tested three HD Radio devices to see what all the hype was about: Best Buy&#8217;s Insignia $50 HD Radio Portable Player (<a href="http://bit.ly/75FcIc">http://bit.ly/75FcIc</a>); Coby Electronics Corp.&#8217;s $100 Portable HD Radio System (http://bit.ly/6G6g4Q); and Sony&#8217;s $160 HD Radio with Dock for iPod + iPhone (http://bit.ly/8c0Bqf). I also talked with iBiquity Digital Corp., the company that developed HD Radio technology and licenses it to broadcasters and radio manufacturers, about how this works.</p>
<p>I found some worthwhile offerings in HD Radio, like commercial-free, sub-channels within existing stations and better sound quality. IBiquity claims that HD Radio makes FM stations sound like CD quality and AM stations sound like FM; to my ear, this seemed to be true.</p>
<p>Overall, I didn&#8217;t hear enough incredibly great content or sound quality to want to run out and replace my old radios. Washington, D.C., where I live, supposedly offers 41 HD Radio channels, but I couldn&#8217;t find as many as that. Over 2,000 primary HD Radio stations and some 1,100 sub-channels can be heard in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, but some areas won&#8217;t offer as many stations, according to iBiquity.</p>
<p>Tuning in each HD station takes longer, like the way changing channels on a digital TV takes an extra second. But in my tests, this process took five seconds or more per change of channel. This kind of delay is enough to try anyone&#8217;s patience. </p>
<p>It might help to explain the technology behind HD Radio. HD Radio makes it possible for local broadcasters to transmit content via digital signals on existing AM and FM frequencies. The digital signals are encrypted and eliminate static heard in analog broadcasts, resulting in better sound quality. But they take longer to be decoded by HD Radio receivers. </p>
<p>Many people mistakenly think that in order to listen to HD Radio, they must pay an extra monthly fee like with satellite radio. If you buy an HD Radio device, you&#8217;ll only pay for it because the service itself is free; its price is built into the cost of the hardware.</p>
<p>Besides boosting the signal, HD Radio offers extra channels of programming you wouldn&#8217;t hear on a regular set. It allows existing FM channels to play additional content on &#8220;multicast&#8221; channels. Most multicast channels are commercial-free, and they appear on the radio&#8217;s display as HD2 and HD3. </p>
<p>Don&#8217;t confuse HD Radio with the text data that scrolls across the screens of many current radios, like my car radio. This is a non-audio service called Radio Broadcast Data System that has been around for a while.</p>
<p>Each of the radios I tested offered an HD Seek feature—a way of skimming through all stations to find and play those that could be heard in HD. But HD Seek didn&#8217;t stop on multicast channels; to get to those on each radio, I had to press buttons to tune up or down while listeningwhile already listening to  to a main HD radio channel. Some HD Radio models have HD Seek tuning functions that find HD1 stations as well as HD2 and HD3 channels. I saved these HD2 and HD3 multicast channels in my radio presets so they were easier to find again.</p>
<p>While a radio was tuning in, or linking into, a channel (the process that took several seconds), an &#8220;HD&#8221; logo flashed on each radio&#8217;s display. This logo turned solid when the station was found and finally started playing. I listened to multicast channels like a bluegrass/country station from my local NPR channel. Another station&#8217;s two multicast channels played &#8220;South Asian&#8221; music and the Mormon Channel.</p>
<p>As its name suggests, Sony&#8217;s HD Radio with Dock for iPod + iPhone has a built-in dock for iPods, iPhones and iPod Touches. If, while using this radio, you hear a song on an HD channel that you like, you can hit a &#8220;Tag&#8221; button to save information about that song. The next time you dock an iPod, iPhone or iPod Touch into the Sony radio, these tags are transferred onto the portable player. When you plug that device into a computer and open the iTunes Store, a list of the tagged songs appears, making it easier to recall songs you liked and may want to buy. This radio is a tabletop model and has the largest display screen of the three radios I tested. It also comes with a remote. It saves up to 20 FM and 20 AM presets.</p>
<p>The Insignia HD Radio Portable Player is a much smaller unit that comes with earbuds and an armband for exercising. If this radio tuned in an HD channel that offered multicast sub-channels, these were indicated on the display with a &#8220;+&#8221; sign, like &#8220;HD1+.&#8221; The Insignia radio stores 10 preset stations.</p>
<p>The Coby Electronics Portable HD Radio System resembled a single, lightweight speaker with a wheel, six buttons and a digital display on it. IBiquity Digital said this model uses an older HD Radio technology that doesn&#8217;t offer as much reception sensitivity as the Sony and Insignia. Still, it was simple to use, and its wheel made it a cinch to tune in HD2 and HD3 channels. It stores up to 10 presets.</p>
<p>In September, when Microsoft&#8217;s Zune HD was released, I tested its built-in HD Radio, the only such device capable of pausing live radio content. I paused music and talk radio on the Zune&#8217;s HD Radio when my phone rang, then un-paused the station to resume. This doesn&#8217;t work if the device is turned off and on again before resuming play.</p>
<p>Along with stand-alone radios, HD Radio receivers also are becoming more common in home audio systems and in cars. But while HD Radio&#8217;s sound quality and extra channels are definite pluses, the number of available stations needs to improve to make the wait for the HD channels to start playing more tolerable. </p>

Not yet.</p>
<p>But it sure looks like the Times is charging online readers if you visit Apple&#8217;s iTunes Store, which is selling two different New York Times (NYT) iPhone apps at 99 cents a pop.</p>
<p>The Times has nothing to do with either app, both of which are called the &#8220;New York Times Mobile Reader.&#8221; And both are supposed to do the same thing: Spit out the paper, along with other Web content like podcasts, in iPhone-friendly form.</p>
<p>You&#8217;d think the Times would want Apple (AAPL) to remove the miniprograms, if only to protect the value of the <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/nytimes/id284862083?mt=8">paper&#8217;s own app</a>, which is both free and very good.</p>
<p>When I pointed out the apps to a Times spokeswoman on Tuesday, she asked around and later confirmed that the two apps &#8220;are not authorized and our legal department is looking into the matter.&#8221; But as of Thursday morning, the apps are still there, ranked No. 14 and No. 18 on Apple&#8217;s list of top paid news apps.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://thethirdscreen.wordpress.com/2010/01/12/finally-the-new-yok-times-starts-charging-for-it-iphone-apps/">Josh Quittner</a> notes, hijacking publishers&#8217; names and content and turning them into paid apps isn&#8217;t uncommon at iTunes. I count at least eight such offerings among the top paid news apps at the online store.</p>
<p>But it shouldn&#8217;t be that hard for Apple to put the kibosh on this stuff. For instance: It ought to be fairly obvious that developer <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/new-york-times-mobile-news-reader/id348662369?mt=8">Chad Rivoli</a>, who has produced one of the &#8220;New York Times&#8221; apps&#8211;along with ones that boast brands like CNET, Fox News, the BBC and the Drudge Report&#8211;is not authorized to do so.</p>
<p>But Apple&#8217;s approach to this is weirdly passive. Here&#8217;s the statement I got from Apple PR&#8217;s Trudy Muller yesterday:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>As an IP holder ourselves, we understand the importance to developers of protecting their IP. We have a process in the App Store for developers to alert us to possible IP infringement. When we&#8217;re notified, our policy includes the removal of the infringing app until a resolution is reached between the parties.</p></blockquote>
<p>If this approach sounds familiar, it&#8217;s because it&#8217;s a lot like the one Google (GOOG) takes toward YouTube copyright complaints: Put it up, then take it down if someone complains.</p>
<p>In Google&#8217;s case, the company claims it has no idea what people are uploading to YouTube&#8211;anyone can throw anything up there. And that approach may well be protected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (we&#8217;ll <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100107/is-the-youtube-case-finally-ready-to-start-moving-again/">see</a>). But Apple knows exactly what it&#8217;s selling via iTunes because it approves every new app individually.</p>
<p>Maybe the Times isn&#8217;t hell-bent on griping to Apple because it has other priorities, like <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091027/what-does-the-new-york-times-really-know-about-apples-tablet-i-aint-sayin-says-editor-bill-keller/">working with Apple on something for the upcoming wondertablet</a>. And maybe every other publisher whose stuff is getting repurposed for profit doesn&#8217;t want to bother Apple either. Hard to believe there is really big money being made here, after all.</p>
<p>All I know is that this situation wouldn&#8217;t last long at all on the regular Internet: Good luck starting a &#8220;New York Times&#8221; Web site and charging people to visit&#8211;or even <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090225/new-york-times-to-the-web-hands-off-our-t/">just linking to the paper while using its iconic &#8220;T.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>What&#8217;s different about iTunes?</p>
<p>UPDATE: At least two other publishers are aware, and unhappy, about unauthorized apps. CNET tells <a href="http://adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=141494">AdAge</a> that it has asked at least one of the developers using its stuff to take it down, <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cnet-mobile/id349052116?mt=8">apparently without success</a>.</p>
<p>And Fox News says it complained directly to Apple in December, says <a href="http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/content_display/news/digital-downloads/mobile/e3i24c80cf0120ed92bc13b5c88134f1519">MediaWeek</a>. In that case, though, it seems to had at least some effect:  &#8220;Mobile News Pro &#8212; Fair &amp; Balanced&#8221; is still <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mobile-news-pro-fair-balanced/id335504866?mt=8">available in the app store</a>, and still aggregates Fox News content, including radio feeds. But the app&#8217;s description does note that it has &#8220;removed FOX wording per FOX request.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/01/images1.jpeg" alt="images" title="images" width="115" height="110" class="alignright size-full wp-image-31755" />Best Buy said this morning that it is <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-31001_3-10426608-261.html?tag=newsLatestHeadlinesArea.0">&#8220;streamlining Napster&#8217;s executive structure&#8221;</a>&#8211;corporate parlance for sacking the faltering music service’s leadership, which has had a tough time finding a winning business model in a digital music world dominated by Apple’s (AAPL) iTunes Store. </p>
<p>CEO Chris Gorog and president Brad Duea are both leaving Napster, which the big-box retailer acquired a little over a year ago.</p>
<p>&#8220;We began with a simple idea&#8211;&#8216;legalizing Napster&#8217;&#8211;and spent almost a decade trying to perfect that dream,&#8221; <a href="http://blog.napster.com/napster/2010/01/a-note-from-napsters-ceo-chris-gorog.html">Gorog wrote in a farewell post on the Napster blog</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;It wasn’t always easy,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We were criticized at times for &#8216;renting&#8217; music. But we thought then&#8211;and still believe quite strongly&#8211;that we had a better approach to digital music. Why buy downloads&#8211;when for a small monthly fee you can have access to&#8211;everything? Well after a lot of years of chasing this dream of&#8211;unlimited access, anytime, anywhere&#8211;it seems to be catching on.&#8221;</p>
<p>Erm, not really. Napster had 760,000 subscribers in 2008. Today it has about 700,000. That’s not catching on,  it’s holding on&#8211;for dear life. And, to be fair, the dream to which Gorog refers is a tough one to chase when your service doesn’t work on the dominant media hardware of the day, even after Best Buy (BBY) acquires you for $121 million. </p>
<p>At this point, Napster is caught in a nightmare reality in which its legal subscription service stagnates as rivals like Apple’s iTunes and Amazon (AMZN) continue to push it to the periphery of the digital music market.</p>
<p>Below, Best Buy&#8217;s statement on the &#8220;streamlining.&#8221;</p>

As part of our ongoing efforts to accelerate our growth in digital entertainment, we are currently making changes to our Napster business unit. These changes are part of Best Buy&#8217;s efforts to streamline Napster&#8217;s executive structure and more effectively integrate Napster&#8217;s corporate activities into Best Buy. </p>
<p>As part of these changes, the positions of Napster CEO, currently held by Chris Gorog, and the position of president of Napster, currently held by Brad Duea, have been eliminated. Chris and Brad are moving on to pursue the next chapters in their careers. We deeply appreciate Chris&#8217;s and Brad&#8217;s contributions in building Napster over the years, and particularly  their leadership this past year as we&#8217;ve welcomed Napster into the Best Buy family of brands.  </p>
<p>Christopher Allen, previously Napster&#8217;s COO, has been named General Manager, Napster, reporting to Chris Homeister, SVP Merchandising Entertainment.   </p>
<p>These changes will allow Best Buy to focus on creating new opportunities in both the digital music and digital video space moving forward.

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/12/steve_tablet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-14426" title="steve_tablet" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/12/steve_tablet.jpg" alt="steve_tablet" width="200" height="283" /></a>The Apple tablet is threatening to approach Yeti status, but here&#8217;s an indication that it will turn out to be real: The company has told some of its key developers to prepare versions of their iPhone apps that will work on a device with a larger screen, in time for an event next month.</p>
<p>Add this to the news that Apple has reportedly booked the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco &#8220;for several days in late January,&#8221; according to the <a href="http://blogs.ft.com/techblog/2009/12/exclusive-apple-to-host-event-in-january/">Financial Times</a>, and it&#8217;s pretty easy to connect the dots: It&#8217;s a very good bet we&#8217;re getting a look at this thing within the next 30 days or so.</p>
<p>A mobile industry source tells me developers have been told that while the mystery device will be shown off at the event, it won&#8217;t be ready to ship (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-to-demo-tablet-in-january-asks-developers-to-get-apps-ready-2009-12">Dan Frommer</a> at Alley Insider relays the same news).</p>
<p>Announcing a product before launch used to be unusual for Apple (AAPL), but it&#8217;s a pattern the company has practiced more recently, notably with the first iPhone. And if Apple is indeed coming out with a new product that will require developers to rethink their approach, it makes a lot of sense.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve asked Apple for comment, but I&#8217;m not holding my breath.</p>
<p>My source says Apple&#8217;s instructions to developers indicate that the tablet&#8211;or at least the thing the company is showing off next month&#8211;will be based on the iPhone OS and rely on the same iTunes Store that has moved <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090928/apples-apps-flying-off-the-virtual-shelves-6-6-million-downloads-per-day/">two billion apps</a> in a couple of years.</p>
<p>If so, it will mean that some people who have been guessing at what Apple is planning may need to go back to the drawing board.</p>
<p>Magazine publisher Cond&eacute; Nast, for instance, has been working on a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091119/can-adobe-and-apple-play-nicely-when-and-if-the-tablet-shows-up/">digitized version of Wired magazine</a> that would run on Adobe (ADBE) software. But the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091119/can-adobe-and-apple-play-nicely-when-and-if-the-tablet-shows-up/">iPhone&#8217;s OS doesn&#8217;t work with Adobe&#8217;s Flash platform</a>, and if that holds true here, Cond&eacute; Nast (and Adobe) is going to have to think of something else. Same goes for many Web video distributors who rely on Flash.</p>
<p>But first things first. Let&#8217;s take a look at this thing, whatever it is, and see what it actually can and cannot do before we get too far ahead of ourselves.</p>

<p>Plunk down $2.99 and you&#8217;ll  get you the <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id345562602?mt=8">January issue of the magazine</a>, featuring a nearly naked Rhianna, for your iPhone or iPod touch.</p>
<p>Aside from the almost nude pop star on the cover, this one mimics <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091020/conde-nast-tries-turning-the-app-store-into-a-newsstand-will-you-buy-gq-for-your-iphone/">GQ&#8217;s first digital issue</a>, which it described as an experiment, in every way. Same price, same treatment of ads and content, etc. The publisher says it&#8217;s going to start putting out every issue of the magazine on iTunes going forward, though some stuff could get tweaked down the road.</p>
<p>Starting with the March 2010 issue, for instance, you&#8217;ll be able to buy new copies of the magazine &#8220;in app,&#8221; meaning that you won&#8217;t have to download a new app from iTunes every time a new issue comes out. GQ may also tweak pricing and/or offer a subscription instead of one-offs.</p>
<p>Cond&eacute; says it is gearing up to put out another title in the same format, though it won&#8217;t say which one (Do you know? <a href="mailto:peter@allthingsd.com">Drop me a line,</a> please.) I should note that <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id344589474?mt=8">Hearst&#8217;s Esquire rolled out its first iTunes issue/app</a> today as well. No coincidence that both publishers are starting with aspirational dude-centric titles.</p>
<p>This stuff doesn&#8217;t seem as sexy as the plans the publishers have for much heralded but little seen tablets that Apple (AAPL) and others are supposed to be cooking up. That&#8217;s probably in part because it&#8217;s always more fun to think about things that <em>could</em> exist, as opposed to ones that are already extant.</p>
<p>But I think this is as important, in its own way, as the tablet demos we&#8217;ve seen from <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091118/conde-nasts-offering-for-apples-mystery-tablet-wired-magazine/?mod=ATD_search">Cond&eacute;</a>, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091202/game-on-time-inc-shows-off-a-tabletized-sports-illustrated/?mod=ATD_search">Time Warner&#8217;s (TWX) Time Inc.</a>, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091217/yet-another-very-attractive-e-magazine-fantasy/">Bonnier</a>, etc. And as relevant as the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091208/nows-the-time-finally-publishers-announce-their-hulu-for-magazines-next-up-building-it/">&#8220;Hulu for Magazines&#8221;</a> consortium the publishers have finally announced.</p>
<p>Because Cond&eacute;&#8217;s iPhone app is a pretty good proxy for the stuff the magazine guys want to eventually produce. And if people are buying this one (Cond&eacute; won&#8217;t release numbers yet, but says it will eventually), then that&#8217;s a hopeful sign for the more advanced stuff we&#8217;re supposed to see one day.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Finding TV shows online can be a major hassle. If you can remember which network hosts the show, you then must hunt through a maze of listings of several other television shows on that network&#8217;s Web site to find it. The show you want to watch might not even be available since many networks rotate only a handful of recent episodes online at a time. And if you do finally find the correct episode, you may be required to download a special media player to watch it.</p>
<p>Some services make this process a little easier. Hulu holds episodes from 1,200 television shows, but is still missing many. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes Store offers over 50,000 episodes, but unlike network sites or Hulu, it requires viewers to pay to download and watch them (though they are commercial-free). Video search engines like Truveo browse the entire Web, returning an often-overwhelming number of results. And while YouTube is the king of Web video, it can too easily return a search result that isn&#8217;t a complete and genuine episode of the show you&#8217;re seeking. </p>

<p>This week, I&#8217;ve been testing <a href="http://www.Clicker.com">Clicker</a>, a free Web site that aims to be the TV Guide for all full episodes available to watch on the Web. It searches over 1,200 sources, so it can index some 400,000 episodes from 7,000 shows. Results include television programs as well as &#8220;Web originals,&#8221; or shows that are native to the Internet and are of broadcast quality. Clicker either plays the video on its site or links you to where this content is shown on another hosting site—like NBC or Hulu. If a show isn&#8217;t available online, Clicker tells you so you don&#8217;t have to keep hunting all over for it. </p>
<p>I like Clicker and found it to be a quick resource for finding all sorts of shows online. In many cases, it directed me to find the episodes I wanted to watch and saved me the hassle of less efficient searching. It also suggested shows I might like and offered a playlist where I could subscribe to receive episodes as they became available or save available videos to watch later. </p>

<p>Clicker makes descriptive pages about each show</p></div>
<p>Though it has a search box, Clicker feels more like a directory than purely a robotic search engine that relies mainly on algorithms. In fact, Clicker created a descriptive page for almost every show, and these pages can be edited or created via user submissions, which Clicker will review before posting them to the site. And because it&#8217;s focused on TV shows or Web originals, it won&#8217;t clutter your results with kids&#8217; birthday parties or cats on skateboards.</p>
<p>The site is still rather new, so it has some kinks to work out—like links to videos that didn&#8217;t actually play if, for example, they were pulled by the network. But these were rare, and for the most part, if a video wasn&#8217;t available, a clear, brief explanation was displayed at the top of the page. Also, if Clicker sends you back out to a network&#8217;s site and that network uses a special player for videos, you&#8217;ll still have to download that player.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Filtering Results</h5>
<p>Clicker&#8217;s program pages contain a description of the show, and a way to filter results by season, airdate or popularity. And the site shows the actual airdate of each video—something that not many other sites do. A column on the right side of each page displays several related shows, like the suggestion of &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; for fans of &#8220;How I Met Your Mother&#8221;; and &#8220;Roswell&#8221; and &#8220;Dead Like Me&#8221; suggested for people who like &#8220;Heroes.&#8221; In December, these recommendations will become even more personalized.</p>
<p>Some of Clicker&#8217;s sources include NBC, Fox, ABC, PBS, the Food Network and Web original content (i.e. &#8220;The Onion&#8221;). It also can search movies and music videos; the movies can be watched free in some cases, or paid for via Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) Video on Demand or Netflix (NFLX) Instant Streaming. In January, Clicker plans to incorporate shows and movies from iTunes, using Apple&#8217;s pay-and-download method. </p>
<p>Clicker is especially handy when you&#8217;re looking for a show that isn&#8217;t where you think it should be. &#8220;Seinfeld,&#8221; for example, is on TBS rather than NBC, where it originally aired, and only nine episodes are available at once before they rotate out and are replaced by nine more. &#8220;Friends&#8221; is found on <a href="http://www.theWB.com">theWB.com</a>, rather than on NBC&#8217;s site. &#8220;Damages&#8221; isn&#8217;t available on its network site, FX; instead, it can be found at <a href="http://www.Crackle.com">Crackle.com</a>, another video-hosting site. It&#8217;s easy to understand why people settle for missing an episode rather than trying to find a show online. </p>

<p>Clicker finds over 400,000 television and Web-original episodes so you can search less and watch more.</p></div>
<p>Clicker also comes in handy when you&#8217;re querying something or someone you need to learn about. By typing in a term like &#8220;Thanksgiving travel,&#8221; I get news results from NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Nightly News with Brian Williams,&#8221; the &#8220;CBS Evening News&#8221; and the Associated Press. I also get tips for traveling during this busy time of year from an AOL Travel online video, as well as a 1968 episode of &#8220;The Beverly Hillbillies&#8221; called &#8220;The Thanksgiving Spirit.&#8221; </p>
<p>Clicker isn&#8217;t the site to use if you want to find the hot video clip that everyone is watching. When I searched for &#8220;Whitney Houston&#8221; the morning after the American Music Awards, the most recent video I found was the singer performing on &#8220;Good Morning America&#8221; in September—not the one showing her singing during the awards show the night before. </p>
<p>But the fact that Clicker can find Whitney Houston on &#8220;Good Morning America&#8221; is useful in itself. A search for Warren Buffett&#8217;s most recent appearance on the &#8220;Charlie Rose&#8221; show can be conducted in a similar manner—either by typing his name into the box at the top of the page or by opening the show&#8217;s page and searching within that show for anyone who has appeared as a guest. Performing a search within a show like this anywhere else is nowhere near as easy as on Clicker. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Playlist of Your Shows</h5>
<p>Clicker can be used as a TiVo (TIVO) of sorts if you create a username on the site or simply sign in using Facebook Connect, which I did. </p>
<p>Users can make playlists where they can add just one episode, all episodes, or new episodes to this list—subscribing to receive all new episodes in the playlist as they become available. I added episodes of &#8220;The Amazing Race&#8221; and &#8220;It&#8217;s Always Sunny in Philadelphia&#8221; to my playlist. This list can be accessed anytime, and it&#8217;s helpful for people who don&#8217;t have enough time to watch a show that they found. In December, email and Facebook notifications will be added to tell users that new episodes are in their playlists.</p>
<p>If you spend a lot of time in front of your computer and find yourself searching all over the Web for the TV shows you&#8217;d like to watch, Clicker will be a huge help. And even if your show isn&#8217;t available, you might find something similar—or better—in Clicker&#8217;s recommendations. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/kid-fight.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-13095" title="kid fight" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/kid-fight-250x183.jpg" alt="kid fight" width="250" height="183" /></a>Brief-ish follow-up to yesterday&#8217;s story about <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091118/conde-nasts-offering-for-apples-mystery-tablet-wired-magazine/">Cond&eacute; Nast&#8217;s plan to create tablet-friendly editions of its magazines</a> with the help of Adobe:</p>
<p>As many readers noted, one big problem&#8211;potentially&#8211;with the plan is that Adobe (ADBE) and Apple (AAPL) generally don&#8217;t play well together. And in the case of Apple&#8217;s iPhone, they don&#8217;t play at all: Adobe&#8217;s flash platform doesn&#8217;t work in the iPhone, which is why many video sites, which depend on flash, don&#8217;t work well on the gadget.</p>
<p>So what if this happens again with Apple&#8217;s tablet, if and when the thing finally arrives?</p>
<p>I noted this yesterday, but didn&#8217;t get to talk to Adobe and Condé about it until later. Now I have their responses. The short version: They sure hope it works out.</p>
<p>The longer version is that both Condé and Adobe plan on running on all sorts of devices. And there&#8217;s not a lot they can do to satisfy Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) tablet requirements in advance, since Apple won&#8217;t discuss the tablet or even acknowledge that the tablet is in the works.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Adobe&#8217;s official line, provided by Senior Experience Design Manager <a href="http://twitter.com/jeremyclark">Jeremy Clark</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Adobe has taken initial steps to prepare Adobe AIR to support mobile with performance improvements (reductions in memory usage, runtime size, JavaScript CPU consumption, and reduced CPU usage for background applications), and support multi-touch input used by mobile phones and presumably a new generation of slate devices.  In fact <a href="http://eon.businesswire.com/portal/site/eon/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20091116006902&amp;newsLang=en">we just announced a beta</a> for AIR 2.0 that incorporates many of these features.</p>
<p>Our job at Adobe is to help create a great digital publishing platform. If publishers like Conde Nast and NY Times are delivering brand-name content via Adobe AIR, we believe that the devices that will win in the marketplace, will be the ones that support this open format. It should also be noted that Adobe recently announced plans to enable Flash applications to be brought to iPhone and indeed <a href="http://eon.businesswire.com/portal/site/eon/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20091005006358&amp;newsLang=en">several are available on the iTunes store</a>.</p>
<p>So we’ll continue to look for ways to enable publishers to deliver their content to the widest possible range of platforms, even on platforms that don’t yet support our runtimes.</p></blockquote>
<p>It&#8217;s a reasonable enough response, given the alternative, which is to wait around for Apple to bring forth the wondergadget&#8211;or not. And in the meantime, the companies would miss an opportunity to help set standards for other guys&#8217; gadgets.</p>
<p>On the other hand, there&#8217;s the less politic response, which you&#8217;re not going to hear from either company on the record: &#8220;Boy oh boy, are we screwed if our stuff doesn&#8217;t work with the market leader.&#8221;</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s one version of that take, from Time Inc.&#8217;s <a href="http://thethirdscreen.wordpress.com/2009/11/19/rumored-delay-of-rumored-apple-tablet-rumored-to-freak-out-publishing-industry/">Josh Quittner</a>, who is working on producing tablet-ready magazines for the Time Warner (TWX) publishing unit:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>I am a hyperbolic guy, not to mention a purple writer, but I think it’s conservative to say that in the miserable publishing business, there is no greater hope for salvation that the iThing. With visions of giant iPhones dancing in our heads, all of us are working on prototypes of magazines and newspapers that will work on 9.7-inch, multi-touch screens linked wirelessly to stores. And, while there are at least a dozen manufacturers heatedly working on their own iterations, we all await the iThing because history has shown us that Steve Jobs leads the parade. Chaos will ensue, with many idiotic and competing platforms drawing precious resources from content makers who have to try just about everything until a frontrunner emerges.</p></blockquote>
<p>Oh. One more quick item: As Quittner says, there are lots of publishers working on this stuff, and I look forward to seeing all of their efforts. And in case <a href="http://www.fastcompany.com/blog/kit-eaton/technomix/apple-tablet-oled-screen-and-conde-nast-mag-rumor-boost-delayed">anyone gets the idea</a> that I&#8217;m only paying attention to the biggest dogs, here&#8217;s what FastCompany.com&#8217;s Noah Robischon has to say about his company&#8217;s digital plans:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>We&#8217;re working on delivering the magazine in several different digital formats right now, including to e-readers. Assuming the iTablet is a real product, and it uses any of these formats&#8211;and I&#8217;ve got no inside knowledge, it&#8217;s all based on rumor and guesswork&#8211;then we&#8217;ll be on the device too.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve been approached by a few different companies working on e-reader formats for magazine publishers, as well as a couple that want to create digital versions of the magazine pages for online display. So we&#8217;re evaluating our options now. This space has become very active in the last 6 months, and it&#8217;s great to have so many options.</p></blockquote>

You <em>will</em> be able to get it on iTunes this month, contrary to earlier reports. But there&#8217;s a catch: You&#8217;re going to have to buy some of the late singer&#8217;s other songs, too.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the pact that Apple (AAPL) and Sony (SNE) have reached this week over the upcoming release of the Jackson&#8217;s newest stuff: Anyone who wants to buy a copy of &#8220;This Is It,&#8221; the song, via iTunes will also have to buy some extended-play version of &#8220;This Is It,&#8221; the album</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the official word from Apple, following a couple days&#8217; worth of erroneous and confusing reports (one of which I <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091014/sony-michael-jacksons-estate-tells-apple-to-beat-it-skips-itunes-with-new-album/">wrote</a>):</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>We look forward to offering the new Michael Jackson album, as well as a digital-only EP with six previously unreleased tracks, providing fans a great way to get all of the new songs. The iTunes Store will offer the album-only single &#8220;This Is It&#8221; on both the album and EP starting October 26.</p></blockquote>
<p>To spell that out: Apple will <em>not</em> be selling the single by itself.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s an unusual arrangement for Apple, which generally insists that labels sell their music on a track-by-track basis. If the labels had their way, they would consistently force customers to buy an entire album for $10 or more. No word on pricing yet, but it&#8217;s a fair bet to assume that even the six-song EP will sell for more than $1.29, Apple&#8217;s highest price for an individual song.</p>
<p>Apple does make an occasional exception here and there. For instance, many of the songs on iTunes soundtracks are only available as part of an album. But while &#8220;This Is It&#8221; does accompany a movie by the same name, it&#8217;s not technically a soundtrack, so that&#8217;s not what&#8217;s going on here.</p>
<p>Sony has sold a staggering amount of Jackson&#8217;s stuff since his death last summer, so it&#8217;s possible that Apple is simply trying to take advantage of what appears to be insatiable demand. But that doesn&#8217;t sound right to me: Even a huge hit on iTunes does very little for Apple&#8217;s books.</p>
<p>My guess: Apple maintains a vise-grip on the digital sales, but every now and then likes to throw the labels a bone. For instance, it used to insist that all of the labels sell all of their songs for 99 cents, but earlier this year, Apple changed its policy and now offers <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090106/confirmed-itunes-going-drm-free-unclear-does-anyone-care/">three different price points</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At long last, Microsoft has made a portable media player that you can be proud to carry around: the Zune HD.</p>
<p>This fourth-generation Zune (<a href="http://Zune.net">Zune.net</a>) is ultra thin and has a stunningly vivid 3.3-inch touch screen that covers most of its surface, doing away with the old device&#8217;s touchpad. It comes in one small size rather than the older large and small versions, and has capacities of 16 and 32 gigabytes for $220 and $290, respectively. </p>

<p>The Zune HD does a nice job of integrating and artistically displaying content about an artist, song or album whenever possible. It has an acceptable built-in browser that surfs the Web using a Wi-Fi connection, and a customizable Quickplay menu on the home screen that displays your content using tiny, stylish tiles. The corresponding Zune Marketplace finally offers movies—about 500 for renting or buying, half of which have HD resolution. And a $90 docking station works with the device to display its HD content on your HDTV.</p>
<p>Given all the improvements of this new Zune, it&#8217;s a shame that this makeover stopped short of revamping its commerce system, which is still too confusing. Rather than inviting newcomers to the Zune and its online store by allowing them to use real money to buy content, it is still tied to the points system made popular by Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox gaming console. In this gamer-friendly system, the cost of one song is 79 points, roughly the equivalent of a dollar, and users must buy points in buckets ranging from 400 for $5 to 5,000 for $62.50. People who are trying to watch their budgets don&#8217;t need the hassle of calculating points per purchase. And Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) Kindle e-reader and Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes Store have proved that using dollars and an uncomplicated one-click system is a successful strategy.</p>
<p>The way I prefer to get the most out of the Zune system is by using the Zune Pass for $15 monthly. This charge allows free continuous streaming of music from any computer&#8217;s browser as long as you log in, and includes 10 free MP3 downloads a month that are yours to keep even if you bail on using the Zune software. The Zune Pass lets you listen to Smart DJ playlists that can be built in one of three ways: using your own library; using a mix of Marketplace content and music from your library; or using only songs from the Marketplace. These also can be set to last for a certain amount of time—say for a 30-minute jog or a two-hour party.</p>
<p>I created several Smart DJ playlists including one using Dierks Bentley as the seed artist from which other suggestions were generated. This country singer was a good test for the Zune software because Mr. Bentley&#8217;s music blends new and old country sounds. I set the Smart DJ to produce a mix using only content from Marketplace and it returned a great list that included songs from newer group, Little Big Town, as well as older stuff like Joe Diffie&#8217;s &#8220;John Deere Green.&#8221; Any Smart DJ list can be dragged onto the Zune HD.             </p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s iPod Touch is the Zune HD&#8217;s biggest rival and its iTunes Store has much more content in all categories compared with Zune Marketplace. But let&#8217;s put music, movies, TV shows, podcasts and music videos aside and say we&#8217;re satisfied with the amount of content offered by Zune Marketplace. </p>
<p>One of the iPod Touch&#8217;s best features is its ability to access Apple&#8217;s App Store, a catalog of 75,000 applications. The Zune HD only dips its pinky toe into a pool where Apple is already swimming laps: Only nine apps can be downloaded from the Zune Marketplace (all are free). They&#8217;re colorful and simple to use, but nine apps won&#8217;t be enough to compete head on with the iPod Touch.</p>

<p>It would be a real boon to Zune if it somehow inherited the gaming genes of Microsoft&#8217;s already-established Xbox, especially considering how Apple has heavily marketed the iPod Touch as a portable gaming system. Microsoft will only say that later this year Zune will offer apps for Twitter and Facebook as well as 3-D games like &#8220;Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition.&#8221; </p>
<p>The only same-capacity model in the Zune HD and iPod Touch is the 32-gigabyte, which costs $290 and $299, respectively. The Zune HD is smaller than the iPod Touch so its organic light-emitting-diode touch screen is 3.3 inches compared with the Touch&#8217;s 3.5-inch screen. The Zune fits easily in any pocket and is just 0.35-inch thick. A thin horizontal button on the face of the device takes you to the home screen, and a hidden button on the left side pulls up an on-screen menu for volume and playback controls—or just tap the screen when content is playing. It doesn&#8217;t have a speaker like the iPod Touch, so you&#8217;ll always need earbuds to hear anything that&#8217;s playing.</p>
<p>Quickplay is one of my favorite features on the Zune HD. It uses tiny tiles to visually represent your content in four categories: currently playing; anything pinned (or labeled with a shortcut tile) to Quickplay; a history of recently opened content; and anything that&#8217;s new to the player. This includes all of your photos, videos, music, Web pages and apps. I easily pinned <a href="http://AllThingsD.com">AllThingsD.com</a>, a &#8220;Saturday Night Live&#8221; video and a favorite photo to the Quickplay menu. Clever animation sends this menu to the background of the home screen or swiftly pulls it into the foreground when needed.</p>
<p>I rented and downloaded the movie &#8220;Girl with a Pearl Earring&#8221; and opted to pay 360 points for the HD version rather than paying 240 points for the standard-definition version. A helpful on-screen explanation described the advantages of each according to where it would be played. Movie rentals last for 14 days or 24 hours after you first press play. </p>
<p>Listening to music on the Zune HD is a lot of fun—and even educational. Whenever the screen goes idle while playing a song, large images of the artist and album cover fill the entire screen while text—album name, artist name, song name—scrolls across these images. With one touch, I saw a list of other albums and songs by that artist, an artist biography, related artists, and pictures of the artist. This is a lot more interesting than staring at one image on the screen, and I learned a lot of new information about musicians I&#8217;ve been listening to for years. </p>
<p>The newly added Web browser on the Zune HD gets the job done, but has downsides. Its on-screen keyboard for entering names of Web pages has very small keys and doesn&#8217;t use predictive typing to fix your mistakes. Some Web pages rendered normally on the browser, but a couple—like <a href="http://Georgetown.edu">Georgetown.edu</a>—looked normal only when I turned the Zune HD horizontally. </p>
<p>As with other Zunes, this Zune HD has a radio receiver and now uses HD radio for finding more stations with clearer signals. If you like a song, an on-screen button tags it for buying and downloading immediately or later.</p>
<p>The Zune HD is a great-looking little player, and users will especially appreciate its Quickplay menu, rich collection of artist information and mesmerizing screen. If its points system was scrapped and its Zune Marketplace was filled with more content, I&#8217;d like it better.</p>

Audience members expecting Apple (AAPL) exec Phil Schiller to quarterback today&#8217;s proceedings were given a welcome surprise when CEO Steve Jobs took the stage in his first public appearance since his liver transplant surgery.</p>
<p>He was given a standing ovation.</p>

And that Willy Wonka charisma of his is back in full force. Certainly, he looks reasonably good for someone who just underwent a liver transplant. And how long does it take to regain 60 pounds anyway? Job&#8217;s isn&#8217;t De Niro in Raging Bull&#8230;.</p>

<p>Anyway, it&#8217;s great to see Jobs onstage again. He speaks quietly and it&#8217;s hard to tell if his voice is scratchy or if he&#8217;s just humbled by what he&#8217;s about to say:  “As some of you know, five months ago I had a liver transplant. I now have the liver of a mid-20s person who died in a car crash and was generous enough to donate their organs. I wouldn’t be here without such generosity, so I hope all of us can be as generous and elect to be organ donors. ..I&#8217;d like to take this moment to thank everyone in the Apple community for their support. Thanks as well to Tim Cook and everyone at Apple. They really ran the company very ably during that time. &#8230; So I&#8217;m vertical, back at Apple and loving every day of it&#8230;.&#8221;</p>
<p>Jobs quickly moves on to the announcements of the day. First up: iPhone 3.1, which now offers a Bluetooth Voice control and Genius feature and supports ringtones sold via the iTunes Store for $1.29. 3.1 is available today as a free download.</p>

<p>And what about cut-and-paste? Seriously, at this point, it&#8217;s almost like Apple (AAPL) is purposely withholding it, out of spite.</p>

It relies on MP3s without digital rights management schemes and is backed by Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Group, all of which apparently believe that more physical media is <a href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/9/sandisk-s-slotmusic-maybe-not-the-worst-idea-we-ve-ever-heard">the best way to reinvent their business model in the era of digital distribution</a>. Though as SanDisk VP Daniel Schreiber notes, <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2008/09/sd-the-new-cd.html">they do have their reasons</a>. &#8220;There&#8217;s a billion phones out there and a lot of them can play music and a lot of them have a microSD slot,&#8221; <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122204010273861109.html">he explained</a>. &#8220;We think there&#8217;s still a need for a tangible, physical product. People will appreciate walking out of the store playing music on their phones.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps. But will they appreciate carrying that music around on a 0.6? x 0.4? medium that&#8217;s about the size of a fingernail? Seems easy to lose, doesn&#8217;t it (maybe Case Logic is planning a slotMusic binder)? And wouldn&#8217;t they rather carry around hundreds of songs, instead of the dozen or so stored on each slotMusic card? And what if the memory card in their phone is already in use, filled up with contacts, applications and other data? What then? And beyond this, haven&#8217;t iTunes and Amazon MP3 made consumers more accustomed to purchasing music à la carte? Why purchase a full album at $15, when all you really want are the only two good songs on it?</p>

As happened today after Digg founder Kevin Rose offered up some purported insider information about the focus of <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080902/yep-its-showtime/">Apple&#8217;s &#8220;Let’s Rock” media event</a> in San Francisco next Tuesday. If Rose is correct&#8211;and his record on handicapping Apple (AAPL) announcements is <a href="http://blogs.siliconvalley.com/gmsv/2006/12/break_out_the_s.html">decidedly mixed</a>&#8211;Apple will announce <a href="http://kevinrose.com/blogg/2008/8/23/new-ipods-coming-very-soon.html">updates to its entire iPod line</a>, including the rumored &#8220;tall&#8221; iPod Nano. Not exactly a tough call considering that <a href="http://www.xskn.com/default.aspx?m=Products&amp;sid=287&amp;cid=2746">XSKN is already selling cases</a> for them and purported photos of the device &#8212; like the one below &#8212; are  <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2008/09/04/photo-of-the-4th-generation-ipod/">showing up on Alibaba</a>.</p>

<p>More interestingly though, Rose says that Apple will <a href="http://kevinrose.com/blogg/2008/9/3/whats-new-in-itunes-8.html">uncrate iTunes 8</a>, the first major overhaul of the software since <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2006/sep/12itunes7.html">iTunes 7 launched two years ago</a>. Rose claims that iTunes 8 will boast some significant enhancements, among them HD-quality TV show downloads, a new &#8220;grid view&#8221; browsing feature and a playlist recommendation engine called Genius. &#8220;iTunes 8 includes Genius, which makes playlists from songs in your library that go great together,&#8221; Rose writes. &#8220;Genius also includes Genius sidebar, which recommends music from the iTunes Store that you don’t already have.&#8221;</p>
<p>Notably absent from Rose&#8217;s list of new features: iTunes Unlimited&#8211;<a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/08/20/the-rumor-room-itunes-unlimited/">the  $129-a-year all-you-can-eat subscription service</a> that <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/b55a0d64-f523-11dc-a21b-000077b07658.html?nclick_check=1">Apple has been rumored to be considering</a> for some time now.</p>
<p>Like all such reports, Rose&#8217;s should be taken with a grain of salt, if not an entire salt lick. Rose was, after all, the guy who erroneously claimed Apple&#8217;s first iPhone would feature a <a href="http://blogs.siliconvalley.com/gmsv/2006/12/break_out_the_s.html">slide-out keyboard, dual batteries and CDMA, <em>and</em> GSM support</a>.</p>
