<p>BoomTown has had some good leaked internal memos from Yahoo, but I have never enjoyed one quite as much as this one from newly installed Yahoo PR head Eric Brown, who started today.</p>
<p>While it is clear that Yahoo (YHOO) has had its troubles in understanding and offering social-networking products to its users, Brown certainly knows how to share.</p>
<p>Yahoo could use some of that DNA!</p>
<p>New Yahoo CMO Elisa Steele named Brown, a colleague from her former job at NetApp (NTAP), as SVP of global communications at the Internet giant in June.</p>
<p>He was the VP of corporate relations at the data storage company, on whose board Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz has also served. Before that, he was at Adaptec (ADPT).</p>
<p>Brown is filling a slot left when former Yahoo PR head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company">Jill Nash left Yahoo in February</a>. She was briefly replaced by her deputy, Brad Williams, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/yahoo-hires-adobe-vet-lamkin-to-run-communications-and-communities-unit-as-dietzen-moves-to-strategy-post/">who was laid off from Yahoo in a recent round of cuts</a>.</p>
<p>Like Steele, he is yet another executive from the business software arena to be hired under Bartz, who also comes from that background.  <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090421/liveblogging-the-yahoo-earnings-conference-call-it-depends-on-your-definition-of-what-wow-is/">Bartz also hired Jeff Russakow from Symantec</a> (SYMC), which makes antivirus software and other security, for the post of Customer Advocacy SVP.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s whole <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090624/exclusive-yahoo-working-on-major-brand-overhaul-please-no-more-yodeling/">marketing organization is undergoing a rejiggering</a> under Steele, including a major brand overhaul. Along with Brown, she also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090701/yahoos-extreme-makeover-confirmed-with-the-hiring-of-a-new-global-marketing-exec">recently hired Penny Baldwin</a> as SVP of global integrated marketing and brand management.</p>
<p>Brown will be taking on Yahoo&#8217;s image-making, a task that has been a challenge over the last two years as the Silicon Valley icon has been buffeted by a series of external and internal challenges.</p>
<p>But Bartz has publicly talked about the need to now focus attention on Yahoo&#8217;s many assets and strengths.</p>
<p>In fact, in an <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090618/yahoo-ceo-carol-bartz-the-full-d7-session-unexpurgated">onstage interview with me at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference</a> in late May, Bartz said: “The best way to change the perception is to do a good job and then talk about it.&#8221;</p>
<p>From this memo, Brown seems like he knows how to do <em>that</em>.</p>
<p>And since he likes writers Kate Chopin and David Sedaris at the same time, it is obvious that Brown and I are on the path to become besties.</p>
<p>(Potential deal-breaker: I like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain.)</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the memo&#8211;based on a form that sources tell me all Yahoo PR folks fill out in a getting-to-know-you questionnaire, but don&#8217;t make public&#8211;in which Brown says hello to his new team:</p>

<p>Thank you so much for the wonderful intro materials you gave me. I&#8217;m going to spend quite a bit of time on the org charts, budgets, plans, and results package you compiled for me. But I&#8217;ve been especially thrilled with the personal profiles you sent my way. I&#8217;ve seen other people whose phobias are the same as mine: spiders and heights; enjoyed how many of you put Paris as your favorite place on Earth; and am impressed with how many amazing books this group has collectively read.</p>
<p>I must also admit to being slightly intimidated by all of you who put &#8220;bad grammar&#8221; as a pet peeve and will triple check this email to avoid any grammar infractions&#8230;</p>
<p>I know I have a Thursday group meeting with you, but thought the least I could do on day one is return the favor and complete my own handbook profile. So here goes&#8230;</p>
<p>Date I joined Yahoo!: today (6 July 2009), though I did spend two days at the senior leaders meeting in mid-June and thank all of you who were there for the warm welcome in Half Moon Bay.</p>
<p>What I do here: lead a team of amazing, intelligent, motivated people who put Yahoo! in the best light possible and tell our story in compelling ways that make users and advertisers around the world want to embrace Yahoo! heartily.</p>
<p>Where I grew up: Warsaw, Virginia&#8211;a tiny town about 90 minutes from Richmond, Virginia and 150 minutes from Washington, D.C. For those of you who are American history buffs, Warsaw is about 10 minutes from the birthplace of Robert E. Lee and 15 minutes from the birthplace of George Washington.</p>
<p>Where I live now: Sunnyvale, California. Can&#8217;t beat the commute.</p>
<p>College: William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. BA in English. Loved lit crit. Senior honors thesis was on post-WWII masculinity in American society as represented by the works of Norman Mailer.</p>
<p>My first job: an internship for the U.S. Navy (my parents&#8217; employer—they were civilians) analyzing different process flow diagram software packages for a team creating warship defense systems. For the rest of high school and college, I had LOTS more fun as a waiter at dive restaurant called The Stagecoach. The food was ghastly; the people were amazing.</p>
<p>What I did before Yahoo!: I ran comms (PR, social media, internal comms, and exec comms) for NetApp, managing a global team of about 60+ people doing amazing enterprise and B2B work in 30+ companies worldwide. I&#8217;m very excited to learn &#8220;consumer&#8221; from all of you&#8211;and equally excited to share experiences from my almost 20 years in the business in return.</p>
<p>What I do when I&#8217;m not here: I love travel (had a super 3 days in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney two weekends ago), cooking (yes, seriously—cooking is very therapeutic and relaxing for me), and reading (though I haven&#8217;t picked up a Norman Mailer since my undergrad days).</p>
<p>If the Internet didn&#8217;t exist, what I&#8217;d be doing right now: teaching literature to high school students. I believe that at some point in my life, I have to return to society what it has given me. And I&#8217;d be a better teacher than firefighter or doctor!</p>
<p>Favorite place on Earth: Paris. I try to go there 3 or 4 times a year and have a couple of very close friends who are kind enough to let me crash with them. Second favorite is Hong Kong.</p>
<p>Proudest accomplishment: professionally&#8211;being part of the &#8220;inner counsel circle&#8221; for NetApp execs on a variety of comms and marketing issues (which I hope to be here at Yahoo! as well); personally&#8211;being a good friend, partner, and family member.</p>
<p>Favorite Yahoo! moment: there have only been 3 days of them so far—and all have been great. I felt very honored and lucky to be part of the Half Moon Bay leadership summit&#8211;and meeting people from all over Yahoo! there was inspiring.</p>
<p>Favorite book: someone who majored in literature can&#8217;t just name one, so I’ll split them into categories&#8230;Favorite works of literature: The Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne, The Awakening by Kate Chopin, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Favorite work that kindled my imagination: The Hobbit by Tolkien. Favorite works that make me laugh: anything by David Sedaris (the man is wicked funny).</p>
<p>Favorite movie: two&#8211;Moulin Rouge and Orlando&#8211;both visually stunning.</p>
<p>My first car: a Buick Skyhawk in a horrible shade of brown&#8211;the thing was so ratty that I had to add oil to it every other day so it wouldn&#8217;t break down&#8211;it made its last hurrah on a cross-country trip from Virginia to California and made it over the Rocky Mountains without any issues but then was quite unhappy crossing the Sierra Nevada range.</p>
<p>My next vacation destination: somehow I think I&#8217;m going to be very busy for the next few months so I&#8217;m not planning any big trips, though I have told a friend I&#8217;ll attend his 50th birthday party in Munich and from there I&#8217;ll try to drive to Vienna for a few days.</p>
<p>My hidden talent: navigating subway systems when everyone else insists on taking a taxi (the exception: Tokyo&#8211;because it is just too darned crowded).</p>
<p>My favorite online video: I like online videos to catch up on things that MTV no longer carries&#8211;like videos from Gus Gus (though I only see one of their videos on Yahoo! Music&#8230;)</p>
<p>My guiltiest pleasure: ice cream in bed with the Kindle (yes, just as Elisa put in her email)&#8211;the ice cream HAS to be Ben &#038; Jerry’s (LOVE being on this floor with the conference room names!) and my favorite is Peach Cobbler.</p>
<p>I have an intense fear of: spiders and heights&#8211;I even had a spider vacuum for a while so I didn’t have to come near &#8216;em or smash &#8216;em&#8211;but then I was scared they’d survive the suction and electric shock and crawl back somewhere&#8211;so now they&#8217;re routinely smashed.</p>
<p>My biggest pet peeve: beating around the bush&#8211;tell me what you want me to know because I&#8217;m not telepathic and say it without a lot of metaphor or subtlety&#8211;if you really want me to know something, please make it crystal clear.</p>
<p>My best celebrity encounter: dinner with friends in the outdoor section of the Restaurant du Palais Royal in Paris on a gorgeous May evening&#8211;next to us was Tom Ford (at the height of his Gucci power)&#8211;I have never wanted to NOT eat so much in my life.</p>
<p>Something few people know about me: I abhor cava (sorry to those of you in Spain)&#8211;champagne is my favorite drink on Earth, prosecco will do in a pinch, and New World sparklings are hit and miss&#8211;but I universally detest cava.</p>
<p>Best for advice for working with me (yes, a little changed from what you all submitted): honesty really IS the best policy&#8211;unless I&#8217;m having a bad hair day in which case please just don&#8217;t say anything about that at all.</p>

(LS&#038;CO.) today named Blake Jorgensen the company’s new executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective July 1, 2009.  Jorgensen is currently the chief financial officer for Yahoo! Inc., a leading global Internet company.  He will report directly to LS&#038;CO.’s Chief Executive Officer John Anderson.</p>
<p>“Blake is a seasoned finance executive who brings a broad background of leadership, operational and strategic experience to Levi Strauss &#038; Co.,” said  Anderson. “He has a successful track record of working with global consumer product companies and his deep financial experience will be a tremendous asset as we continue to position the company for future growth.”</p>
<p>Prior to joining Yahoo!, Jorgensen co-founded Thomas Weisel Partners in 1998, where he served as chief operating officer, co-director of investment banking and a member of the Executive Committee. He managed all aspects of the publicly traded investment bank.  Jorgensen also managed the investment bank’s relationships with key investors and several strategic alliances with international partners.</p>
<p>Before founding Thomas Weisel Partners, Jorgensen served as a managing director and principal in  the corporate finance department of Montgomery Securities, where he oversaw the integration of Montgomery Securities into NationsBank and Bank of America. Earlier in his career, he worked as an independent management consultant to global corporations and held strategic planning and consulting positions with MAC Group/Gemini Consulting and Marakon Associates.</p>
<p>“I’m excited to be part of an iconic company with leading global brands,” said Jorgensen. “The Levi’s® and Dockers® brands are loved by consumers around the world.  Based on the strength of these brands, I believe there are tremendous opportunities ahead for growth worldwide. <p>More musical chairs at Yahoo, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090415/stop-me-if-youve-heard-this-one-yahoo-management-and-staff-set-on-shuffle-again/">BoomTown predicted recently</a>, as top execs at the company move in and out of jobs, and new ones from the outside move in.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most important change to occur is the replacement this week of SVP Scott Dietzen&#8211;who has been in charge of all communications and communities products at Yahoo (YHOO)&#8211;by former Adobe Systems (ADBE) exec Bryan Lamkin, several sources said.</p>
<p>Lamkin will become SVP of Applications Products.</p>

<p>According to his <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/dir/bryan/lamkin">profile on LinkedIn</a>, Lamkin (pictured here) was most recently SVP of Creative Solutions, Adobe’s largest business unit, where the software exec &#8220;led product strategy, marketing and product development for Adobe’s flagship software applications, including Photoshop, the Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, Flash and Illustrator.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lamkin, who was at Adobe for 14 years, has more recently been an executive-in-residence at two venture firms, New Enterprise Associates and Sutter Hill Ventures.</p>
<p>He will take over for Dietzen, who came to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070917/yahoo-zimbra/">Yahoo in 2007 after its $350 million Zimbra open-source email acquisition</a></p>
<p>Dietzen&#8211;whom sources said is more entrepreneurial than managerial and did not want to lead such a big organization at the Internet giant&#8211;will become VP of strategy in the move. Many said they expect he will eventually leave Yahoo to try his hand at another start-up.</p>
<p>His colleague, Zimbra founder and CEO <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090121/zimbra-founder-satish-dharmaraj-to-depart-yahoo">Satish Dharmaraj, left Yahoo earlier this year</a> to join <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090323/zimbra-founder-and-ex-yahoo-exec-dharmaraj-to-redpoint-ventures">Redpoint Ventures as a VC</a>.</p>
<p>In his job since, Dietzen has been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081007/yahoos-scott-dietzen-speaks-about-its-new-online-calendar-which-is-about-a-decade-late">busy fixing Yahoo&#8217;s mail and calendar offerings</a>. (See my video interview with him below from last fall.)</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not all.</p>
<p>Also afoot is a restructuring of Yahoo&#8217;s North American sales unit, with the unexpected promotion of Mitch Spolan, who was a regional sales exec and will now be in charge of all North American field sales.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-yahoo-centralizes-sales/">paidContent Web site reported the sales changes</a> first, which have been rumored around Yahoo recently.</p>
<p>Spolan jumped over two more senior execs, sources said, who run sales operations for the East and West coasts. One of those execs, Beth Lawrence, will now run Yahoo&#8217;s relations with agencies. Both report to U.S. sales SVP Joanne Bradford.</p>
<p>Over the last 18 months, Yahoo has seen a bleeding of its advertising staff to a wide range of Silicon Valley Web companies, including, most recently, Yahoo’s VP of Sales Operations Dan Foehner to social-networking site Facebook.</p>
<p>Lastly, one of Yahoo&#8217;s most senior communications execs, Brad Williams, was let go as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090421/yahoo-first-quarter-results-are-as-meh-as-expected-will-cut-five-percent-of-staff-plus-the-full-press-release/">part of its recent round of layoffs</a>. He had been running PR&#8211;admirably and with good cheer, I might add, despite all the bad news&#8211;since its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company">head, Jill Nash, departed earlier this year</a>.</p>
<p>Williams&#8217;s departure was <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124061817277555167.html">first reported by The Wall Street Journal</a> tonight. He came to Yahoo in early 2008 from eBay (EBAY).</p>
<p>New marketing head Elisa Steele, who was hired by CEO Carol Bartz, had recently hired a headhunting firm to find a new PR chief, sources said, and Williams was not considered as a candidate for the job.</p>
<p><em><strong>UPDATE</strong>: Yahoo confirmed my report above.</em></p>
<p> A spokesman sent me the following info about Lamkin&#8217;s appointment:</p>

<p>Yes, more layoffs are indeed coming to Yahoo, sources confirmed to BoomTown, but perhaps even <em>more</em> than have been reported.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not all, as even more top-level managers are either leaving or being moved around the ever-changing organizational structure at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>That includes a longtime top sales operations exec, Dan Foehner, who is about to start at Facebook next week, as well as others contemplating leaving, on their way out or are being reshuffled.</p>
<p>In other words, business as usual at the tumultuous company, whose nickname should be &#8220;Reorg.&#8221;</p>
<p>First, the layoffs, which the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/15/technology/companies/15yahoo.html?ref=technology">New York Times was first to report yesterday would be announced Tuesday</a> (side note to Damon&#8211;<em>this</em> is how you link to scoops) during Yahoo&#8217;s first-quarter earnings call and could impact several hundred employees.</p>
<p>The quarterly results are expected to be weak by most analysts, which is why more layoffs&#8211;which had been mentioned by the company as a possibility&#8211;are an obvious move.</p>
<p>But several internal sources said Yahoo staff is bracing for employee departures that might to be even higher, as many as 500 or more.</p>
<p>That could mean a complete lopping off or sale of various business units that Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz has been evaluating since she arrived in January.</p>
<p>Why? Well, several employees said they were told the new round of cuts will not actually take place until June and that Yahoo HR is now preparing to follow the rules required by the <a href="http://www.doleta.gov/layoff/warn.cfm">Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.</a></p>
<p>Under the complex federal guidelines, Yahoo must provide a written WARN notice to affected employees &#8220;at least 60 calendar days in advance of covered plant closings and mass layoffs.&#8221; WARN notices are triggered for a variety of reasons, although a smaller number of layoffs across many units typically does not require it.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/no-jobs-signjpg.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/no-jobs-signjpg.jpeg" alt="no-jobs-signjpg" title="no-jobs-signjpg" width="214" height="217" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-12286" /></a></p>
<p>A WARN notice is required, for example, when an employer shuts down a facility or operating unit within a single site of employment and lays off at least 50 full-time workers, as well as when an employer lays off 500 or more full-time workers at a single site of employment.</p>
<p>In its last two layoffs, Yahoo issued WARN notices and slashed about 2,500 jobs in total last year, leaving it with about 13,600 employees world-wide at the end of 2008.</p>
<p>But some of Yahoo managers are still leaving on their own.</p>
<p>Many top engineers, for example, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090327/microsoft-acquiring-yahoo-one-employee-at-a-time">have taken jobs of late at Microsoft</a> (MSFT) after the software giant installed a Yahoo tech star, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/microsoft-confirms-qi-lu-hired-as-digital-chief-mcandrews-out">Qi Lu</a>, as its top online exec.</p>
<p>And, BoomTown reported earlier, there have also been numerous departures of key staff recently, including: PR head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company">Jill Nash</a>, Zimbra founder <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090121/zimbra-founder-satish-dharmaraj-to-depart-yahoo">Satish Dharmaraj</a> and soon, high-ranking techie <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/another-yahoo-to-go-venkat-panchapakesan-on-his-way-out">Venkat Panchapakesan</a>.</p>
<p>And more still, it seems.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s VP of Sales Operations Foehner, for example, is headed out after a long stint at the company and is going to Facebook, said several sources inside and outside the company.</p>
<p>On <a href="http://twitter.com/foehner">Foehner&#8217;s Twitter</a> page, he tweets about a new unnamed job, as well as an athletic endeavor (Foehner is a dedicated triathlete): &#8220;back in pleasanton. starting bike adventure on thurs. start new gig on monday. 9 weeks til CdA!&#8221;</p>
<p>There is also a lot more movement inside Yahoo, as the reorganization done by Bartz in February shakes out.</p>
<p>Typical of this is Mike Walrath, the high-profile former CEO of Right Media, an online ad exchange snapped up by Yahoo for $720 million in 2007, who is now an advertising-focused SVP at Yahoo.</p>

<p>Now Walrath is moving out from under the purview of Yahoo North America EVP Hilary Schneider and will report to Ari Balogh, EVP of Products and CTO, as all search products seem to be rolling up through his organization. (Both Balogh and Schneider are pictured here.)</p>
<p>While there are other key execs at Yahoo&#8211;see <a href="http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/press/management.cfm">this drastically downsized Yahoo management page</a>, which used to be a <em>lot</em> longer&#8211;Balogh and Schneider have roughly split the company into two parts, product and engineering for Balogh and the bulk of the content and advertising businesses under Schneider.</p>
<p>Bartz is at the top, of course, and moving parts is not a complete surprise, said one exec, as she gets more control of the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;The last reorg was a blunt instrument, so now she is starting to surgically move people around or even out, after seeing what staff can and can&#8217;t do and what fat there still is,&#8221; said one exec close to the situation.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no small comfort to Yahoo&#8217;s reorg-and-layoff-weary staff, especially at its Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ in the heart of Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>When Bartz <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090226/one-last-yahoo-reorg-missive-bartz-tells-employees-what-she-already-said-again/">announced her big reorganization in late February</a>, she declared a moratorium to the endless reorganizations that had plagued the company&#8217;s troops for far too many years.</p>
<p>Wrote Bartz in an email to Yahoo employees about her new management lineup:</p>
<p>&#8220;I know you guys have reorg fatigue. Hang in there&#8211;our intention is to leave this structure in place for two to four years. We&#8217;ll continue to make adjustments as needed, but we expect this core structure to stay put.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps the core is still solid, but a lot is still quite undefined at Yahoo, as it seeks to right its shaky fortunes.</p>

<p>Thus, if it&#8217;s good enough for President Obama, it&#8217;s good enough for Bartz!</p>
<p>While most expect the results for the quarter to be weak, due to the econalypse, the overall verdict from BoomTown&#8217;s needling of Yahoos to give me info on their new leader recently: Love, love, love Bartz&#8217;s innate decisiveness, and wanting more of the same.</p>
<p>&#8220;She has an opinion and she is not afraid to use it,&#8221; joked one high-ranking Yahoo. &#8220;That is a big deal for a lot of people here who have wanted a CEO who is very forceful.&#8221;</p>
<p>And the only substantive negative: Some remain worried about her lack of Internet savvy, although most of those admit she has been a quick learner as the 100-day mark comes to a close.</p>
<p>In Yahoo&#8217;s case, 100 days has a special meaning&#8211;when he got his job in late 2007, former Yahoo CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang declared that he was going to give the troubled company a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071025/day-100/">100-day evaluation with &#8220;no sacred cows.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>The Yang-farmed bovines, as it turned out, just got fatter.</p>
<p>Under Bartz, more have been under the knife, as the hard-charging exec has started to really put her imprint on the company.</p>
<p>She has certainly talked tough since the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090113/live-blogging-yahoos-bartz-as-ceo-announcement-her-first-words-yahoooo/">meet-the-press conference</a> on her very first day on Jan. 13.</p>
<p>Some memorable Bartz quotes were about Yahoo&#8217;s immediate needs, in her estimation: “some friggin’ breathing room&#8221; and “frankly, [the company] could use a little management.”</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/attack_chicken_attack_640-298x300.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/attack_chicken_attack_640-298x300-250x251.jpg" alt="attack_chicken_attack_640-298x300" title="attack_chicken_attack_640-298x300" width="250" height="251" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-12162" /></a></p>
<p>That kind of tough-lady, Annie-Get-Your-Gun quote-making has been Bartz&#8217;s signature, whether it be in <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/carol-bartz-friday-memos-chick-flicks-the-need-for-speed-and-wow-also-here-comes-the-rerorg">folksy Friday memos she has sent out to staff</a> or at the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090127/liveblogging-the-yahoo-fourth-quarter-earnings-call-yes-we-can/">fourth-quarter earnings call in late January</a>, only weeks into her tenure, when she declared:</p>
<p>&#8220;This is not a company that needs to be pulled apart and left for the chickens.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, except for the management structure, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090226/bartz-blogs-reorg-the-entire-memo-to-employees">Bartz pulled right apart and reshuffled</a> six weeks in.</p>
<p>Cleaning up and simplifying the complex reporting structure in an all-roads-lead-to-Carol set-up and tossing out the CFO were main points of the reorganization. Many at Yahoo expect there to be even more cuts in staff sooner than later, many sources said.</p>
<p>And there have also been departures of key staff, including: PR head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company">Jill Nash</a>, Zimbra founder <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090121/zimbra-founder-satish-dharmaraj-to-depart-yahoo">Satish Dharmaraj</a> and soon, high-ranking techie <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/another-yahoo-to-go-venkat-panchapakesan-on-his-way-out">Venkat Panchapakesan</a>.</p>
<p>Yang too, although he remains on the board, has not been present as much at the company.</p>
<p>Curiously, though, except for the new CMO, Elisa Steele&#8211;whose office is powerfully located right next to Bartz, as many Yahoos noted to me&#8211;there have been no further appointments for open positions for CFO, a new Customer Advocacy top exec and a new international head. Presumably, they are on the way.</p>
<p>Not that Bartz has not been busy&#8211;visiting Yahoo staff and clients all over&#8211;as well as finally finding time for a face-to-face meeting with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in Silicon Valley recently.</p>

<p>Before the recent meetings, in a classic negotiating tactic, Bartz (pictured here) has projected a disinterested, poker-faced attitude about the situation, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090116/is-the-gut-bone-connected-to-the-knee-jerk-bone/">even telling Yahoo staff in one meeting</a> “that she plans to spend a lot of time investigating whether to sell Yahoo’s search business, but that her ‘gut’ was not to do that.”</p>
<p>Well, a sale of Yahoo&#8217;s search business might not happen, Bartz was only buying a little time in being so confident and projecting the affect that Yahoo had some leverage and a choice.</p>
<p>But that is exactly what she does not really have, given that Yahoo faces the prospect of spiraling costs to maintain a search share, even as it has a good chance of declining.</p>
<p>So, last week, the news&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090410/yahoos-bartz-and-microsofts-ballmer-finally-talking-about-search-and-advertising-partnership/">first reported here</a> Friday&#8211;that Bartz was involved in preliminary talks with Microsoft (MSFT) about an extensive commercial advertising and search partnership&#8211;should have come as almost no surprise.</p>
<p>A re-engagement between the companies, after a bruising takeover battle that ended in tears all around, has been long hoped for by investors and other observers, given that both have struggled against the search behemoth that is Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>(Or, in a nickname that BoomTown is trying unsuccessfully to popularize: Googzilla.)</p>
<p>The talks&#8211;which are not about the software giant making another acquisition offer for Yahoo&#8211;are ongoing and might not lead anywhere, but it is in both sides&#8217; interest to avoid that outcome.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo has to do some kind of deal or Bartz will be facing a decline even she cannot manage,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;And Microsoft, if it wants to compete in search, needs Yahoo&#8217;s share along with its own.&#8221;</p>
<p>Among the surprisingly innovative ideas being bandied about: Yahoo might take over all of Microsoft’s display and premium advertising business to sell along with its own, while Microsoft would run the search advertising business for the pair.</p>
<p>And, while the discussions could degenerate into chest-pounding and pointless jockeying, one assumes that Bartz gets the idea that Yahoo needs a lot of help&#8211;including from some rapprochement with Microsoft, from making its staff even leaner, from streamlining its product focus and from striking other significant partnerships.</p>
<p>Many inside and outside Yahoo certainly hope that spirit&#8211;and not the one from this video below of a fabulous scene of Betty Hutton and Howard Keel in the musical classic, &#8220;Annie Get Your Gun,&#8221; singing &#8220;Anything You Can Do&#8221;&#8211;prevails with Microsoft in the next 100 days.</p>

<p>Jill Nash, who said she was leaving Yahoo (YHOO) in early February, will be taking the top PR job at San Francisco-based Levi Strauss &#038; Co. She will be Levi&#8217;s chief communications officer and VP of corporate affairs.</p>

<p>As <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company">BoomTown previously reported</a>, Nash left Yahoo after becoming weary of the constant tumult, which began almost as soon as she was hired by then-CEO Terry Semel.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s just say, the situation at Yahoo went downward from there, until what appears to be a possibility of revival after the recent appointment of new CEO Carol Bartz, which Nash did not wait around to see for herself.</p>
<p>Levi is also not a walk in the park, though. In its most recent quarter, the jeans manufacturer saw tougher results, and its CEO, John Anderson, warned that 2009 would be a rough year for Levi and the entire retail market.</p>

Prior to this, she was the vice president of global communications for Gap Inc., where she focused on reputation management, cultural transformation and strategic change at both the corporate and brand levels.</p>
<p>“I am excited to work for an industry leader, with global operations and world-renowned brands,” Nash said. “I look forward to being part of the team that helps this great apparel leader further strengthen its position in the marketplace.”</p>
<p>Previous to her tenure with Yahoo! and Gap, Nash was vice president of corporate communications at the Charles Schwab Corporation and helped position the company as a leader in technology and online brokerage.</p>
<p>Nash holds a B.A. in journalism from San Diego University. She has received numerous industry honors including multiple Gold Quill awards. Nash is active in a variety of community organizations.</p>

That phenomenon known as &#8220;25 Things.&#8221; Just in time for Facebook&#8217;s fifth birthday, the record-breaking waste of time may have reached critical mass this week. It&#8217;s certainly been the topic of much conversation, including on <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090130/facebooks-latest-craze-tag-youre-it-repeat-24-more-times/">BoomTown</a>. Elsewhere this week:</p>
<p>BoomTown provided continuing coverage of the Yahoo (YHOO) merry-go-round. This time, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash-to-depart-the-company/">PR head Jill Nash</a> announced her departure. As the company&#8217;s chief communications officer, she&#8217;s had a challenging two-year run. New CEO Carol Bartz definitely has some PR ideas of her own, including offering cash prizes to employees who provide info on their colleagues who leak information to the press. Not a huge deterrent yet, apparently&#8211;it didn&#8217;t take long for BoomTown to get info on both Nash&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090202/hey-big-spender-the-goodbye-memo-from-yahoo-pr-head-jill-nash/">farewell memo</a> and Bartz&#8217;s bounty system. Next, New Networks, the publisher behind BarelyPolitical and its hugely viral Obama Girl videos, has widened its purview to include the tech sector with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090203/barely-digital-mocking-geeks-instead-of-pols/">BarelyDigital</a>, which the online network has envisioned to include regular shows, tech news remixes and the like. It&#8217;s rumored that Obama Girl will be making a cameo appearance or two. If the first two features are any indication, the future looks pretty funny. In another round of executive musical chairs, Time Warner&#8217;s (TWX) AOL ad head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090203/aol-ad-head-clarizio-out-being-replaced-by-former-yahoo-sales-head-coleman/">Lynda Clarizio</a> will be leaving the online service, to be <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090203/its-official-the-entire-internal-memo-about-aols-ad-head-switcheroo/">replaced</a> by former Yahoo ad exec Greg Coleman. Microsoft (MSFT) is launching a slick new celebrity site on MSN called <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090205/is-wonderwall-gonna-be-the-one-that-saves-msn/">Wonderwall</a>, created, designed and produced by BermanBraun Interactive, a Hollywood company run by former Yahoo media chief Lloyd Braun. And speaking of musical chairs, MSN is clearly upping its content ante&#8211;earlier this week, it hired Yahoo&#8217;s recent media head Scott Moore, who used to work at Microsoft.</p>
<p>MediaMemo asked: What happens when one of the world&#8217;s richest men lets loose a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090206/video-bill-gates-the-ted-conference-and-a-box-full-of-mosquitoes/">swarm (a small swarm) of mosquitoes</a> at a high-end conference? Nothing too exciting, really, but when you consider that the stunt was the publicity-generating part of Bill Gates&#8217;s talk at TED, which was a discussion of malaria and some of the problems the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is facing head-on, it gets pretty compelling. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090203/citi-says-amazon-sold-500000-kindles-last-year-12-billion-business-next-year/">Kindle 2.0</a>, the new generation of the device dubbed the &#8220;iPod of the book world&#8221; will be unveiled Monday at a New York press event, but how many of the devices have been sold thus far? Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) not telling, but Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney estimates the number at 500,000&#8211;and believes that the Kindle will be a $1.2 billion business next year. Obviously, a lot will depend on Monday and the new device&#8217;s reception. MediaMemo also took some time out this week to wish <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090204/facebook-at-five-remembering-the-early-years-and-measuring-up-against-google/">Facebook</a> a happy fifth birthday, and to stack its track record next to Google&#8217;s at the same age, with interesting results. Even the pros are getting hit hard these days&#8211;in its quarterly earnings report this week, News Corp. (NWS) missed its estimates, recorded an $8.4 billion write-off and lowered its guidance. CEO Rupert Murdoch admitted that the downturn is <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090205/news-corp-misses-estimates-huge-writeoff-murdoch-says-its-worse-than-he-thought/">worse than he thought</a>. He also admitted that he spent <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090206/news-corp-we-spent-28-billion-too-much-on-dow-jones/">$2.8 billion too much</a> for Dow Jones. (News Corp. is the owner of Dow Jones and this Web site.)</p>
<p>Digital Daily followed the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090203/google-che-diavolo-italia/">trial of four Google executives</a> this week on criminal charges of defamation and breach of privacy after a much-publicized two-year investigation. Google (GOOG) insists the charges are unwarranted and &#8220;akin to prosecuting mail service employees for hate speech letters sent in the post.&#8221; Clearly, the ultimate outcome will have a huge impact on the future of a free, open Internet. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090203/myspace-a-place-for-friends/">MySpace</a> said this week that it has identified and ousted 90,000 registered sex offenders&#8211;and those are just the ones brilliant enough to use their real names. There&#8217;s no way of knowing how many are actually using the service or how to prevent them from re-registering once they&#8217;re deleted. A free an open Internet, indeed. DD also pondered the future (or lack thereof) of the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090203/time-to-shutter-mobile-devices-motorola/">Motorola</a> (MOT) handset division. Co-CEO Sanjay Jha says the company is committed to making the business work, but its products are looking boring and outdated, and a turnaround would be prohibitively expensive to execute. In the words of one analyst, the company&#8217;s problems are &#8220;gruesome.&#8221; On the other end of the spectrum, Microsoft continues to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090205/microsoft-mulling-phune-the-full-research-note/">vehemently deny</a> reports that it&#8217;ll be producing its own smartphone. In a report this week, analysts from Broadpoint.AmTech speculated that the device could be uncrated later this month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Meanwhile, it&#8217;s been up in the air for two years whether or not iPhones will ever be uncrated in historic Georgetown. Apple (AAPL) has been around the table a few times now with preservationists wary of the architectural impact of an <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090205/an-apple-falls-in-georgetown/">Apple store</a>, no matter how much the business traffic is needed in the neighborhood. Looks like perseverance may have finally paid off, though&#8211;Georgetown&#8217;s Apple store could open later this year.</p>
<p>In <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20090204/synchronizing-your-bookmarks-on-all-your-pcs/">Personal Technology</a> this week, Walt Mossberg took a look at a program called Foxmarks, which sets out to synchronize bookmarks among all of your browsers and all of your machines. Sound a little too handy to actually work well? Walt found it does a pretty good job, with a few caveats. In <a href="http://mailbox.allthingsd.com/20090204/cleaning-out-windows-xp/">Mossberg&#8217;s Mailbox</a>, Walt responds to readers who want to know more about doing &#8220;techie&#8221; maintenance on their PCs to keep them running well, whether or not to buy a 15-inch MacBook Pro, and options for email within Windows 7, which won&#8217;t ship with a built-in email program. In the <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090203/tracking-friends-the-google-way/">Mossberg Solution</a>, Katherine Boehret tests Google Latitude, an opt-in program that lets users track one another&#8217;s movements on their smartphones using GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell towers. Kind of like Gawker Stalker, only with permission and without Lindsay Lohan (unless you happen to be Lindsay Lohan).</p>
<p>Last but not least, Silicon Valley lost one of its own this week. The widely admired and much loved Mike Homer, whose rare, severe illness was a rallying point for many over the past months, passed away last weekend and was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090205/mike-homer-laid-to-rest-today/">laid to rest</a> on Thursday.</p>

<p>After an extraordinary two years with Yahoo!, I want to let you know that I&#8217;ve decided to leave the company. In many discussions with Jerry over the past six months, I made a personal commitment to work with him to see Yahoo! through the transition to new leadership. Not only has Jerry been a tremendous professional partner, he&#8217;s been a true friend as well. Now that we have Carol Bartz, our terrific new CEO in place, the time is right for me to step out and find my next challenge. My last day with Yahoo! will be February 20th, and I&#8217;ll spend the next few weeks working with our team on a transition plan.</p>
<p>To say that we&#8217;ve faced some challenges together is an understatement! I&#8217;ve honestly never seen a communications team tested the way that we&#8217;ve been. And yet, we&#8217;ve accomplished a lot together:</p>
<ul>
<li>We created a global Crisis Communications capability that&#8217;s been called upon time and again.</li>
<li>We launched a Public Affairs group that&#8217;s proven invaluable to Yahoo! in navigating difficult global issues&#8211;from human rights to privacy.</li>
<li>We expanded our Employee/Leadership communications capabilities.</li>
<li>We developed our first ever Analyst Relations program that has significantly moved the needle in the breadth and depth of our relationships.</li>
<li>We launched a global consumer communications effort to help drive traffic to our sites and we&#8217;re now regularly featured on the shows like Today, Good Morning America, the CBS Early Show, etc.</li>
<li>And perhaps most importantly, we&#8217;ve worked together to create an integrated, top-notch team, that’s never failed to deliver kick-ass results.</li>
</ul>
<p>What&#8217;s doubly impressive is that these results have been accomplished in the midst of the unsolicited offer from Microsoft, a proxy battle, two CEO changes, an anti-trust fight and multiple global policy issues.</p>
<p>When times are tough, your jobs are much more difficult, but also much more important. And throughout this, you&#8217;ve consistently shown that you are more than up to the task. I can&#8217;t tell you enough how proud I am of the work you&#8217;ve done and continue to do.</p>
<p>I leave knowing Yahoo! has the right leader to help the company navigate today&#8217;s challenges. I&#8217;m also confident that Yahoo! couldn&#8217;t have a better team of communications professionals to support Carol.</p>
<p>Wherever my future leads, know that I&#8217;ll be cheering for Yahoo! and all of you.</p></blockquote>

<p>Jill Nash, Yahoo&#8217;s chief communications officer, has told CEO Carol Bartz and other Yahoo staff this afternoon that she is leaving the company.</p>
<p>Yahoo has not made Nash&#8217;s resignation official, but is likely to do so quickly as Bartz tries to stanch incessant leaks (like this one; see below!).</p>
<p>In any case, sources said Nash does not appear to have any definite plans to move to another company immediately, so the reasons for her departure are unclear.</p>
<p>BoomTown would have to guess that Nash is simply completely spent from her past two years at Yahoo (YHOO), which have been very fraught from a public relations perspective, to say the least.</p>
<p>Nash, who was hired by former CEO Terry Semel, has had to deal with everything from management turmoil, after Semel was replaced by co-founder Jerry Yang, to poor financial results to a nasty takeover attempt by Microsoft (MSFT) to an even less friendly proxy fight to a failed search deal with Google (GOOG) to recent wrenching layoffs.</p>
<p>Not much good news to report, in other words, especially with a tough turnaround road ahead with newly installed CEO Bartz, who seems to have a very strong mind of her own about public relations.</p>
<p>(Including, several sources tell me, this week in an internal memo, offering cash rewards to employees who turn in other employees who leak to the press. Bartz has also initiated investigations to stop leaks. All I can say about these tactics&#8211;while it might seem reasonable to try to stop the leaking, from a management perspective, and I see why Bartz is focusing on it&#8211;is: Yahoo is not a prison and its employees are not snitches and&#8211;more to the point&#8211;they won&#8217;t leak to me if Bartz <em>fixes</em> the company.)</p>
<p>While I have not always seen eye-to-eye with Nash on this column&#8217;s coverage of Yahoo, I have found her to be a pro to deal with and fair, especially considering the often tense circumstances at Yahoo in the last year.</p>
<p>Nash is not the first top Yahoo exec to depart since Bartz got to Yahoo in mid-January and will not likely be the last, as the new CEO carves out her own path and chooses the team she wants.</p>
<p>Many Yahoos have told me, not for attribution and at all levels of the company, that they are bone-tired of the long-term struggle the company has been engaged in and want to move on, even in this weak economic climate.</p>
<p>Last week, this column reported the departures of Zimbra co-founder <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090121/zimbra-founder-satish-dharmaraj-to-depart-yahoo/">Satish Dharmaraj</a> and marketing exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090122/yahooyet-another-hiring-over-and-out-hadley-heads-to-microsoft/">Eric Hadley</a>, neither of which was necessarily due to Bartz&#8217;s arrival.</p>
<p>Now it&#8217;s Nash&#8217;s turn to say goodbye. <a href="http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/press/management.cfm">According to Yahoo&#8217;s Web site</a>, her duties were to lead its outward-facing efforts.</p>
<p>It reads, in part: &#8220;As a key member of the Yahoo! executive team, Nash will be responsible for the company&#8217;s worldwide communications efforts, including public and media relations, corporate reputation, corporate, financial and employee communications, and crisis and issues management.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nash came to Yahoo from the Gap, where she was the VP of global corporate communications. Previous to that, she worked at Charles Schwab (SCHW), KPMG and Transamerica Life.</p>
