<p>Disney, which has been busy reorganizing its interactive group, is buying <a href="http://www.babble.com">Babble Media</a>, a New York-based parenting platform that features several hundred mom bloggers.</p>
<p>The entertainment giant declined to provide the purchase price for the New York-based start-up, which was founded by aiming at urban hipster parents and has garnered more than $6 million in funding since it was spun off from Nerve Media several years ago.</p>
<p>Babble&#8217;s venture investors include Greycroft Partners, Village Ventures and iNovia Capital.</p>
<p>Co-founders Rufus Griscom and Alisa Volkman and the rest of the 40-person Babble staff will join the Disney Interactive Media Group unit as part of its Moms and Family portfolio, Disney said in its official press release (see below).</p>
<p>Disney described Babble as the &#8220;premier blogging platform for a new generation of connected parents.&#8221; To me, that roughly translates into Brooklyn-living, Bugaboo-pushing, organic arugula-eating, yoga-calm moms and sensitive New Age dads. </p>
<p>But don&#8217;t take my word for it &#8212; today&#8217;s front page features on Babble include &#8220;15 Vegan Recipes for Thanksgiving&#8221; and &#8220;Is It Selfish to Have One Child?&#8221; (Yum and <em>kinda</em>!)</p>
<p>The next obvious stop for its audience, after the kids get a little bigger: Gwyneth Paltrow&#8217;s fabulously twee and irksomely addictive <a href="http://www.GOOP.com/">GOOP</a>.</p>
<p>But Brooke Chaffin, who is SVP of Moms and Family in the Disney Interactive Media Group, said in an interview that the highly interactive content site with a definite &#8220;sophisticated&#8221; editorial voice has become mainstream, and is actually where the whole category is going.</p>
<p>&#8220;Babble is sharing the experience and stories on a daily basis through the parents lens,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And it brings in a blog network that is so important to this audience, because it&#8217;s by, for and about parents, and that&#8217;s far more important for them than experts.&#8221;</p>
<p>There will be that, too, said Chaffin, who noted the site has grown 100 percent year over year. It is now up to four million unique monthly visitors.</p>
<p>Disney plans to add its more evergreen family-focused content to Babble, to give it more heft to compete with other similar parenting sites, such as Johnson &#038; Johnson-owned BabyCenter, NBC&#8217;s iVillage, Parents.com and CafeMom.</p>
<p>Interestingly, Disney had taken a gander at <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100817/exclusive-yahoo-eyes-cafemom-for-100-million-acquisition/">buying CafeMom</a> a while back.</p>
<p>Chaffin, who <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110105/disney-interactive-hires-brooke-chaffin-to-oversee-content-for-women-and-families/">came to Disney earlier this year</a> after a stint at Auditude and a long time at Yahoo, said Babble has carved out a unique niche in combining content with social &#8212; the current gold ring for a lot of publishers. </p>
<p>&#8220;What Babble is doing is best of breed &#8230; it is just a different approach to blogging,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It felt like we at Disney are about storytelling and Babble does an amazing job doing just that.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yesterday, BoomTown reported that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110315/after-ad-changes-yahoo-media-unit-gets-a-management-shakeup/">Mark Walker</a>, the head of the powerful Yahoo News site, was leaving the Internet giant for another company.</p>
<p>That company, sources said, will be Disney, where Walker will be leading a major overhaul of its flagship <a href="index">Disney.com</a> site.</p>
<p>The property, which has largely been a promotional and aggregation play for Disney&#8217;s many family-oriented offerings&#8211;such as its popular Disney Channel cable television shows&#8211;still sees 20 million unique visitors monthly.</p>
<p>Walker will report to Jimmy Pitaro, the former Yahoo media head who is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants">now co-president of Disney&#8217;s online division</a> with John Pleasants. Walker worked directly for Pitaro at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Walker&#8217;s job, said sources, will be to find a new direction for Disney.com, including adding original programming to the site, as well as more personalization for its users.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a big task for Walker, since Disney&#8217;s various Web efforts have a long and often rocky history, from its disastrous purchase of Infoseek in 1998 and efforts to create the Go.com portal to its savvy acquisition of several innovative kid-focused sites such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070807/disney-tries-to-waddle-its-way-to-digital-success">Club Penguin</a> in recent years.</p>
<p>Still, like many traditional media giants, Disney has never achieved the kind of digital success its spectacular brand has promised. The hiring of Pitaro and Pleasants by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101009/when-you-wish-upon-two-web-stars-ceo-bob-iger-talks-about-the-next-digital-direction-for-disney-2">CEO Bob Iger</a> was a sign that the company was going to make some big changes again.</p>
<p>BoomTown will query Iger about all this at the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110222/first-d9-speakers-iger-elop-apotheker-schmidt-darpa-head-and-more">ninth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference</a> this summer, where he&#8217;ll be interviewed onstage.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s not <em>all</em> departures!</p>
<p>Yahoo is hiring former News Corp. and Disney online exec Mickie Rosen (pictured here) to run its Audience unit, which includes the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s powerful content sites, sources said.</p>
<p>Starting next week, Rosen will report to Americas head Ross Levinsohn, who has worked with her before, at both News Corp. and Fuse Capital.</p>
<p>Her new title is SVP of the Yahoo Media Network, which is apparently a rebranding of Audience.</p>
<p>Previous to this job, Rosen was CEO of Tecca, a price-checking service Fuse created in partnership with Best Buy.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s likely she will remain based in the Los Angeles area, where Yahoo has a large office in Santa Monica, Calif.</p>
<p>The move is Levinsohn&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110105/yahoos-display-ad-vp-gm-departs-meanwhile-hair-tastic-u-s-head-reorgs-unit/">first management rejiggering</a> since he took over last year, and there is likely to be more to come.</p>
<p>Rosen, who has also worked at the Fandango online movie ticketing site, will replace interim audience head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole/">Raymond Stern</a>, who will be&#8211;as before&#8211;running partnerships and business development, as well as Yahoo&#8217;s listings business.</p>
<p>Rosen&#8217;s new job had actually been that of former Audience head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101004/exclusive-yahoos-david-ko-to-head-mobile-at-online-gaming-powerhouse-zynga">David Ko</a>, as well as former <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants">Media VP Jimmy Pitaro</a>.</p>
<p>Ko left Yahoo and is now heading mobile games at Zynga, while Pitaro is a top digital exec at Disney.</p>

<p>Mickie built the foundation of her career with McKinsey &#038; Company, where she spent seven years consulting with senior management on strategy, operational and organizational issues across a number of industries, including media and technology.<br />
Mickie has an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a B.A. in Economics from UC San Diego, and is based in Los Angeles.</p></blockquote>

<p>He&#8217;s <em>baaaaaack</em>.</p>
<p>Former Fox Interactive Media President Ross Levinsohn, that is, who is the top candidate to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole/">replace Hilary Schneider</a> as Yahoo&#8217;s North American head, according to several sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>While the deal is not completely struck, sources said Levinsohn is very close to taking the job.</p>
<p>Sources added, if he does, he is likely to remain living in Los Angeles, where he has long been located. Yahoo has a large facility in Santa Monica.</p>
<p>The move is a bold one for Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, who desperately needs to bring in major Internet talent to the company to shore up her worrisome inexperience in the space.</p>
<p>Yahoo has been rocked by management turmoil&#8211;especially in the media and advertising unit&#8211;and also troubling weakness in revenue growth and innovative spark.</p>
<p>Levinsohn, one of the more colorful of Web personalities, certainly has a spark.</p>
<p>Levinsohn is currently an investor at Fuse Capital, which funds digital media and communications start-ups.</p>
<p>But sources said he has been itching to get back at a big company with scale in the digital media business and has been interested in Yahoo for some months.</p>
<p>At Yahoo, presumably, he will have purview over what Schneider did (and perhaps more), including the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s powerful media properties and its large advertising sales force in the U.S..</p>
<p>It&#8217;s likely Yahoo will hire a major ad sales exec to work under Levinsohn, and sources said the company has been in contact with several prominent execs to fill the slot left open with the March departure of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media">Joanne Bradford to Demand Media</a>.</p>
<p>Besides Schneider, also among the recent departures in the unit Levinsohn would run: <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100928/exclusive-yahoo-exec-churn-continues-with-media-head-pitaro-ready-to-bolt">VP of Media Jimmy Pitaro</a>, who went to <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants/">Disney</a>, and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100929/exclusive-major-meltdown-at-yahoo-as-more-top-execs-to-depart-including-u-s-head-hilary-schneider">U.S. Audience head David Ko</a>, who moved to social gaming phenom <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101004/exclusive-yahoos-david-ko-to-head-mobile-at-online-gaming-powerhouse-zynga">Zynga</a>.</p>
<p>Until now, Levinsohn is best known for his stint running digital operations for News Corp.&#8217;s then FIM unit.</p>
<p>It was at FIM that he rose to prominence after he bought MySpace, the social networking site that was once the hottest property on the Web.</p>
<p>At the time, Levinsohn and other execs also struck a gigantically lucrative advertising search deal with Google that garnered MySpace huge revenues.</p>
<p>After leaving News Corp. after repeated clashes with MySpace Co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe, he partnered with former AOL CEO Jon Miller in another investment company, Velocity Capital.</p>
<p>Ironically, both Miller and Levinsohn were the top choice of billionaire shareholder activist Carl Icahn as the execs he wanted to run Yahoo when he was agitating for change there a few years back in the midst of the failed takeover attempt by Microsoft.</p>
<p>When reached today, Miller&#8211;who now is the Chief Digital Officer of News Corp.&#8211;declined to comment on his former associate&#8217;s job prospects.</p>
<p>But he said: &#8220;If Yahoo is so lucky to get Ross, it would be great, because he is one of few people who understands <em>all</em> media.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, although Levinsohn is better known as a dealmaker and media exec than as a sales expert, although he did manage digital advertising properties at FIM.</p>
<p>Previous to FIM, Levinsohn ran Fox Sports Interactive Media. He has also worked at the AltaVista Network, an early search pioneer, CBS Sportsline and Time Warner&#8217;s pay cable giant HBO. In addition, <a href="http://fusecapital.com/partners/ross-levinsohn">according to his bio at Fuse</a>.</p>
<p>He also worked at Saatchi and Saatchi and in sports management and marketing with ProServ and Lapin and Rose Communications.</p>
<p>Yahoo declined to comment about the possible appointment of Levinsohn.</p>
<p>(And let&#8217;s hope Yahoo&#8211;especially the hip-shooting Bartz&#8211;doesn&#8217;t announce his arrival by also unfairly kicking former execs in the media and advertising unit in the teeth, as has been cloddishly done already too many times.)</p>
<p>BoomTown has also contacted Levinsohn via email and phone and has not heard back from the typically voluble exec.</p>

<p>Yes, indeedy, and this afternoon, it was David Katz&#8217;s turn to say goodbye. He was Yahoo&#8217;s VP for Mobile, North America. (He is pictured here, and you can <a href="http://mobile.yahoo.com/newsroom/management#">read his bio here</a>.)</p>
<p>The move, said sources, is part of a reorganization in the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole">wake of the departure</a> of David Ko, SVP Audience of Mobile and Local, North America.</p>
<p>He was replaced by Raymond Stern, who also heads business development.</p>
<p>If it seems a little confusing, it is because it <em>is</em>.</p>
<p>But there are all kinds of management rejiggering discussions going on after the additional departures of U.S. head Hilary Schneider and Media VP Jimmy Pitaro.</p>
<p>Mobile is an important arena for Yahoo, as Bartz also stressed in the call today.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s hope Dave lands somewhere good, as he seems so nice from this recent video from the CTIA conference just two weeks ago, posted by Yahoo:</p>

<p>After Disney named two longtime Internet execs&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants/">Playdom&#8217;s John Pleasants and Jimmy Pitaro of Yahoo</a>&#8211;as co-presidents of its Internet unit, BoomTown did a longer interview with CEO Bob Iger about the entertainment giant&#8217;s next Web moves.</p>
<p>I always enjoy talking digital with Iger&#8211;who is pictured above in an interview I did with him in 2006 at the fourth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference&#8211;since he has been one of the old media moguls who seems unafraid of the challenges of new media.</p>
<p>While appropriately wary, Iger acted early and often in exploring digital initiatives at Disney (DIS) that others in Hollywood&#8217;s and New York&#8217;s media worlds were loath to consider.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have tried to keep two obvious philosophies,&#8221; Iger said in a phone interview yesterday. &#8220;First, that our current business not get in the way of adopting new technologies, and, second, that our business belongs on these new platforms.&#8221;</p>
<p>Easy to say, of course, but it&#8217;s still nice to hear, given the longtime, incessant and ultimately wearying push-and-pull between those who make bucks making content and those who make bucks making technology.</p>
<p>&#8220;My premise is that technology is about an opportunity for us,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;And we cannot will it away and should not&#8230;because you can&#8217;t stop these things from happening.&#8221;</p>

<p>That&#8217;s presumably the impetus behind the hiring of Pleasants and Pitaro (picture here, left to right).</p>
<p>With an assist by recent Disney board member and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Pitaro came to his attention earlier this year, Iger said.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100928/exclusive-yahoo-exec-churn-continues-with-media-head-pitaro-ready-to-bolt">Pitaro left his job as SVP of Media at Yahoo</a> (YHOO) last week.</p>
<p>And Pleasants was CEO of Playdom, the online social gaming company that Disney <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100727/disney-purchases-playdom">acquired for $763 million</a> in late July.</p>

<p>Under the previous regime of former CEO Michael Eisner, for example, Disney bought search engine Infoseek and tried to create a portal called Go.com.</p>
<p>That failed, and was one of many efforts to define the media company&#8217;s Web goals.</p>
<p>More recently, in 2008, Disney gathered most of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080604/disney-combines-digital-units-heres-the-iger-memo/">Internet properties within DIMG</a> under Wadsworth.</p>
<p>Still, money-making has not been part of the mix. In its most recent quarter, DIMG lost $65 million on revenue of $197 million.</p>

<p>In the interview about the new structure, Iger said: &#8220;I think we&#8217;ve built a framework of assets, and now is the time to create a structure in a more focused way. In splitting the divisions, we can focus more on them better and in a way they deserve.&#8221;</p>
<p>He outlined the new set-up, which will have Pleasants focus on the online gaming and mobile landscape and Pitaro on the Web arena.</p>
<p>Iger said he felt Pleasants and Pitaro brought different backgrounds to the task, as well as longtime experience in the Internet arena.</p>
<p>He said that upon considering a fresh approach, he felt that Wadsworth was &#8220;spread too thin,&#8221; given all the various online arenas for Disney.</p>
<p>In fact, today, Disney owns a number of big Internet properties, including Disney.com, Family.com and Club Penguin, although there does not seem to be a particularly cohesive strategy among them.</p>
<p>Of course, that&#8217;s no surprise, given it is all part of a multifaceted media company with a variety of businesses.</p>
<p>Due to its powerful content assets, said Iger, it might be a perfect time for a more cogent plan. With the explosion of devices, such as the Apple (AAPL) iPad and others, the importance of cooperation between content and technology is more critical than ever.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think a lot of technology companies are really finally ready to handle more premium content in a way that is beneficial to all of us,&#8221; said Iger.</p>

<p>And, he added, it was time for Disney to get more involved in technology, which was the reason for the purchase of Playdom. The move has made it more a publisher than a licensor.</p>
<p>&#8220;If we wanted to get significant in size, we need the investment to be greater,&#8221; Iger said about the big payout to get into the fast-growing social gaming arena.</p>
<p>And that has meant less emphasis on console games, on which he said Disney had focused too much in the past.</p>
<p>No longer&#8211;now Iger said he has planted Playdom, as well as its purchase of the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100701/reports-disney-buys-iphone-game-startup-tapulous">Tapulous music app start-up</a>, in a spanking new facility in Palo Alto, Calif., right in the heart of Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>&#8220;We need to be part of the culture and world there in a significant way,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;And I believe I have convinced the senior team within Disney that Playdom is a huge opportunity for them.&#8221;</p>
<p>That includes online gaming related to units such as sports at ESPN, as well as other Disney brands, such as the theme parks or Marvel, into Playdom games.</p>
<p>While Pleasants will run his part of the show from Silicon Valley, Iger said, Pitaro will work out of Los Angeles on Web initiatives and in upgrading the Disney online experience.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to make Disney sites more of a community and entertainment center than a marketing hub,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;Where is gets complicated is the levels of exclusivity and the other places we want to distribute our content.&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;In certain areas, we will be very aggressive with our content and in others less aggressive, to the extent that each offers us revenues,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;Obviously, where there is potential cannibalization, we will be a little more careful&#8230;but we are going to push forward.&#8221;</p>
<p>When asked about the most obvious management issue&#8211;the possibility of clashing with two heads of one division (<em>MySpace, anyone?</em>), Iger said that while there was overlap, he thought the jobs Pitaro and Pleasants had to do were also wide-ranging and different enough.</p>
<p>Plus, added Iger, &#8220;They both report directly to me and I am there to see to it that it works.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, as Disney continues to move forward into the digital future, the content and technology buck stops, as it should, at Iger.</p>

<p>The move comes only a day after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants/">Jimmy Pitaro</a>, who also departed his job as SVP of Media at the Internet giant last week (working under Ko, in fact), landed at Disney (DIS) as the new co-president of its Internet division.</p>
<p>For Zynga&#8211;the fast-growing San Francisco-based maker of such online hits as Farmville and Mafia Wars that got its start on Facebook&#8211;mobile is becoming a critical new platform for growth, as consumers use a variety of increasingly functional mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also the fastest growing area internationally, where mobile phones are more widespread and where Zynga is seeking its next spurt of growth.</p>
<p>Sources said Zynga had been pursuing Ko for months.</p>
<p>Before heading the Audience unit at Yahoo (YHOO), Ko <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091130/yahoo-mobile-head-david-ko-takes-over-audience-job-too-but-mobile-product-development-moves-under-balogh">ran its mobile operations</a>, which included heading product development, making distribution deals and more.</p>
<p>Under Ko, Yahoo&#8217;s mobile efforts first centered on building apps for smartphones, such as the Apple (AAPL) iPhone, but shifted to encompass more of its copious content assets.</p>
<p>Ko, who worked in a variety of areas at Yahoo, took over as SVP of Yahoo Mobile in 2009 after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/connected-life-head-marco-boerries-to-leave-yahoo">Marco Boerries left</a> as EVP of the Connected Device Division, which now does not exist under that name.</p>
<p>Ko had also run Yahoo&#8217;s mobile business in the Asia-Pacific region.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://mobile.yahoo.com/newsroom/management">one of Ko&#8217;s old Yahoo bios</a>, he previously worked at Salomon Smith Barney as a senior associate and analyst. He is a graduate of New York University&#8217;s Stern School of Business.</p>
<p>Ko, who lives in San Francisco with his family, the bio notes, inexplicably &#8220;enjoys reading tech blogs.&#8221;</p>
<p>In his new job, as SVP of Mobile at Zynga, he will report directly to CEO Mark Pincus, sources said.</p>

<p>Yesterday, after Disney named two longtime Internet execs&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants/">Playdom&#8217;s John Pleasants and Jimmy Pitaro of Yahoo</a>&#8211;as co-presidents of its Internet unit, BoomTown did a longer interview with CEO Robert Iger about the entertainment giant&#8217;s next Web moves.</p>
<p>I always enjoy talking digital with Iger&#8211;who is pictured above in an interview I did with him in 2006 at the fourth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference&#8211;since he has been one of the old media moguls who seems unafraid of the challenges of new media.</p>
<p>While appropriately wary, Iger acted early and often in exploring digital initiatives at Disney (DIS) that others in Hollywood&#8217;s and New York&#8217;s media worlds were loathe to consider.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have tried to keep two obvious philosophies,&#8221; Iger said in a phone interview yesterday. &#8220;First, that our current business not get in the way of adopting new technologies, and, second, that our business belongs on these new platforms.&#8221;</p>
<p>Easy to say, of course, but it&#8217;s still nice to hear, given the longtime, incessant and ultimately wearying push-and-pull between those who make bucks making content and those who make bucks making technology.</p>
<p>&#8220;My premise is that technology is about an opportunity for us,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;And we cannot will it away and should not&#8230;because you can&#8217;t stop these things from happening.&#8221;</p>

<p>When asked about the most obvious management issue&#8211;the possibility of clashing with two head of one division (<em>MySpace, anyone?</em>), Iger said that while there was overlap, he thought the jobs Pitaro and Pleasants had to do were also wide-ranging and different enough.</p>
<p>Plus, added Iger, &#8220;They both report directly to me and I am there to see to it that it works.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, as Disney continues to move forward into the digital future, the content and technology buck stops, as it should, at Iger.</p>

<p>Sorry, folks, but&#8211;despite reports&#8211;Yahoo will not be unveiling another new organizational structure this week.</p>
<p>In actuality, the beleaguered Internet giant is just cleaning up from last week&#8217;s shake-up&#8211;in which it announced that a chunk of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole/">top media and sales leadership was leaving</a>&#8211;as well as settling in new hires made in recent months by its relatively new product head, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100419/yahoo-confirms-former-microsoft-exec-blake-irving-hired-as-chief-product-officer">Blake Irving</a>.</p>
<p>In fact, those changes in Irving&#8217;s unit have resulted in the departure of two more execs. That would be former SVP of Media Products and Solutions Jeff Kinder and SVP for Cloud Computing Shelton Shugar, who are on their way out.</p>
<p>Kinder actually left his job many weeks ago and was offered the chance to find another within Yahoo (YHOO), although sources said he has now definitely decided to leave the company on his own.</p>
<p>CEO Carol Bartz held a meeting Friday with senior leadership to go over the situation and to assure management that changes to come would stabilize the company going forward.</p>
<p>To be sure, Yahoo needs some kind of reassurance and fast.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100929/exclusive-major-meltdown-at-yahoo-as-more-top-execs-to-depart-including-u-s-head-hilary-schneider/">broke the news last week</a> that U.S. head Hilary Schneider was departing the company (see her goodbye memo below), along with U.S. Audience head David Ko and SVP of Media Jimmy Pitaro.</p>
<p>Pitaro has since landed a big job as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants/">co-president of the Internet unit of Disney</a> (DIS).</p>
<p>The overall corporate turmoil has put more scrutiny on Bartz. For two years, she has been trying to turn around the company, with only a modicum of success.</p>
<p>While Bartz did strike a search and online advertising partnership with Microsoft (MSFT) to better battle Google (GOOG), she has not <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/liveblogging-yahoos-second-quarter-earnings-call-how-do-you-solve-a-problem-like-flat-revenue">goosed flat revenue</a> nor been able to boost <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100630/as-its-stock-languishes-yahoo-does-a-buyback-to-juice-shares">Yahoo&#8217;s moribund stock</a>.</p>
<p>Perhaps more critically, she has not stopped the steady exodus of talent, especially of more senior execs.</p>
<p>Departures in the last six months include U.S. advertising sales head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">Joanne Bradford</a>, Integrated Consumer Experiences SVP <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100528/exclusive-yahoo-front-page-head-tapan-bhat-leaves-yahoo">Tapan Bhat</a>, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100408/confirmed-yahoo-cto-and-chief-product-officer-balogh-to-leave-company">CTO Ari Balogh</a>, as well as the heads of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100827/exclusive-yahoo-social-platforms-head-sample-departs-for-ebay">social platform</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100823/exclusive-yahoos-communications-head-jason-titus-departs">communications product</a> units.</p>
<p>But last week&#8217;s departure trifecta of the execs running Yahoo&#8217;s powerful and successful media unit drove the talent drain issue home for many investors and other observers.</p>
<p>While each departure case was different, of course, the leavings have lent a feeling of instability inside and outside the company.</p>

<p>That has happened more quietly over the several months of reshuffling by Irving (pictured here), who came to Yahoo from Microsoft, and which I have reported on here previously several times.</p>
<p>For example, in September, Irving hired Microsoft exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100909/another-microsoft-exec-to-yahoo-joining-other-ex-softies">John Matheny</a> to head the communications products and communities unit.</p>
<p>Previous to that, in July, Irving brought in another old colleague from the software giant&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100708/yahoo-makes-another-major-product-exec-hire-from-microsoft/">Bill Shaughnessy</a>&#8211;as SVP of Product Management.</p>
<p>Thus, Irving&#8211;who is a little too busy traveling to a number of Yahoo product and technology units in Asia and India over the next weeks to announce yet another reorg&#8211;has pretty much already moved his part of the business around, although there are likely to be some more hires to come.</p>
<p>It is not unusual for a new senior exec to do this, of course, but Irving&#8217;s many moves reportedly sparked some tension between him and Schneider.</p>
<p>That might have been moot, since she had decided to leave some months ago, but was asked to stay on by Bartz.</p>
<p>To be sure, in recent months, many sources said that their relationship had become strained too as Yahoo ad sales continue to struggle, and they also disagreed on the company&#8217;s strategic direction.</p>
<p>Still, it should be noted that Schneider is staying on until a new exec is named to replace her.</p>
<p>Whatever the various machinations in the corporate suite at Yahoo, Bartz needs to find a way to convince Wall Street that she still has the ability to complete her much touted turnaround of the Silicon Valley pioneer to a new period of growth and innovation.</p>
<p>How quickly she is doing that will come into sharp relief in a few weeks when Yahoo reports its third-quarter earnings on October 19.</p>
<p>And while executive departures garner a lot of attention, that is the bottom line for Yahoo, the thing most important of all to watch.</p>
<p>Finally, given I love a good internal memo, here is, belatedly, the email that Schneider sent to her staff last week about her leaving:</p>

<p>I&#8217;m sure by now you&#8217;ve all had a chance to read Carol&#8217;s note, and know that I made the decision to move on to the next stage of my career. Our consumers look to Yahoo! as they navigate their lives, our advertisers look to Yahoo! for leadership, and publisher looks to Yahoo! for our amazing scale and reach. Our team, however, is our secret weapon!</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the search for my successor is under way and I will continue to lead our team until we make the transition.</p>
<p>Additionally. David Ko, SVP of Audience and Mobile, and Jimmy Pitaro, VP of North America Media, have decided to leave Yahoo! David and Jimmy are amazing leaders and we will miss them. Yahoo!&#8217;s leadership positions in Sports, News, Entertainment, Finance and Mobile are their legacy that we have to proudly continue.</p>
<p>Raymond Stern will be the SVP of North America Audience and will be responsible for the Audience teams. Raymond has been an integral part of Americas leadership team as the SVP of Business Development and Partnerships. Before joining Yahoo! a year ago, he held a wide range of business leadership positions, including more than 10 years as a Partner the Boston Consulting Group where he ran the Technology and Media Practice on the west coast. He also held senior leadership roles at Intuit, including CMO.</p>
<p>Raymond will immediately start diving in to the Audience business, and David and Jimmy are committed to working with Raymond through the transition. Right now, Raymond will continue overseeing the business development and partnership teams while we think through the best structure for these teams moving forward.</p>
<p>I know that transitions can create swirl&#8211;but our customers, both consumer and marketers, are looking to us for continued leadership&#8230;and I know we can deliver this.</p>
<p>You are Yahoo!&#8217;s magic, and I thank you for your tremendous commitment, leadership, and support.</p>

<p>Jimmy Pitaro, who is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100928/exclusive-yahoo-exec-churn-continues-with-media-head-pitaro-ready-to-bolt">leaving his job running the powerful media properties at Yahoo</a> (YHOO), has taken a job as co-president of Disney Interactive Media Group, with John Pleasants.</p>
<p>Pleasants was CEO of Playdom, the online game company that Disney <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100727/disney-purchases-playdom">acquired for $763 million</a> in late July.</p>

<p>The appointment of the pair, both of whom will report to Disney (DIS) President and CEO Robert Iger, is a big move by the entertainment giant.</p>
<p>And it looks like another large-scale attempt to clarify and bolster its Web strategy, which has had a long and often rocky history, and is the first major reset under Iger.</p>
<p>It is also against a backdrop of financial losses. In its most recent quarter, for example, DIMG lost $65 million on revenue of $197 million.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think we&#8217;ve built a framework of assets, and now is the time to create a structure in a more focused way,&#8221; said Iger in an interview this morning with BoomTown. &#8220;In splitting the divisions, we can focus more on them better and in a way they deserve.&#8221;</p>
<p>He outlined the new set-up, which will have Pleasants focus on the online gaming and mobile landscape and Pitaro on the Web and online advertising arenas. Iger said he felt Pleasants and Pitaro brought different backgrounds to the task, as well as longtime experience in the Internet arena.</p>
<p>Disney will need that going forward.</p>
<p>Under the previous regime of former CEO Michael Eisner, for example, Disney bought search engine Infoseek and tried to create a portal called Go.com. That failed, and was one of many efforts to define the media company&#8217;s Web goals.</p>
<p>More recently in 2008, Disney gathered most of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080604/disney-combines-digital-units-heres-the-iger-memo/">Internet properties within DIMG</a>, under Steve Wadsworth. He recently stepped down from his job.</p>
<p>Today, Disney owns a number of big Internet properties, including Disney.com, Family.com and Club Penguin, although there does not seem to be a particularly cohesive or profitable strategy among them.</p>
<p>Of course, that&#8217;s not a surprise, given they are part of a multifaceted media company with a variety of businesses.</p>
<p>Because of those powerful content assets, in fact, now might be a perfect time for a more cogent plan. With the explosion of devices, such as the Apple (AAPL) iPad and others, the importance of cooperation between content and technology is more critical than ever.</p>
<p>News of the appointments of Pitaro and Pleasants was rumored earlier this week by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yahoo-media-boss-jimmy-pitaro-quitting-for-huge-and-amazing-job-at-disney-2010-10">Silicon Alley Insider</a> and the <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3ifd62d5f2cdeae60e916349d78890df93">Hollywood Reporter</a>.</p>
<p>As an interesting aside, Iger said that he was introduced to Pitaro via Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, as well as her husband, David Goldberg. Sandberg is now on the board of Disney, and Pitaro came to Yahoo via Launch Media, which was co-founded by Goldberg.</p>

<p>James Pitaro, an experienced Internet executive known for consistently delivering great branded web experiences to consumers, will oversee Disney Online, the home of Disney branded web and social media sites.</p>
<p>The new structure at DIMG is intended to enhance the strategic focus and responsiveness of the company’s digital games and Disney Online businesses in a marketplace characterized by swiftly evolving consumer behavior and technologies. The structure is designed so that the two businesses can share consumer insights and technological resources and jointly take advantage of growth opportunities.</p>

<p>Pleasants, who will be based in the Bay Area, will oversee Disney&#8217;s overall games strategy and its global network of game development studios, including recently acquired mobile publisher Tapulous. <p>Prior to joining Playdom as CEO in June 2009, he was President of Global Publishing and Chief Operating Officer of Electronic Arts Inc., where he led the company&#8217;s online and mobile business units and its strategic expansion into online and social games. He previously served as President and CEO of Revolution Health and CEO of Ticketmaster, which included Match.com, CitySearch.com and Evite.com.</p>

<p>Finally, a funny from Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, confirming what <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100929/exclusive-major-meltdown-at-yahoo-as-more-top-execs-to-depart-including-u-s-head-hilary-schneider/">BoomTown reported yesterday</a> about the departures of three top execs in an email memo to the company&#8217;s employees worldwide.</p>
<p>It just went out and began: &#8220;Carol from the foxhole here.&#8221;</p>
<p>Actually, she&#8217;s in Georgia. In the memo, Bartz said she expects to announce the new head of the Americas region for Yahoo (YHOO) to replace outgoing chief Hilary Schneider before the end of the year.</p>
<p>The company also released a similar statement, which is below, adding that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091216/yahoo-hires-stern-for-senior-partnership-and-biz-dev-post">Raymond Stern</a>, Yahoo SVP of North America partnerships and business development, will take over for another outgoing exec, Audience head David Ko.</p>
<p>(Yahoo VP of Media <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100928/exclusive-yahoo-exec-churn-continues-with-media-head-pitaro-ready-to-bolt">Jimmy Pitaro</a> was the third in the sweep of execs.)</p>

<p>But I&#8217;m sure you’ve seen the rumors about Hilary Schneider, David Ko, and Jimmy Pitaro leaving. Yes, they&#8217;re leaving, but each for different reasons that suit their life&#8211;and Hilary will send a separate note to her team with more about the Americas org. later today.</p>
<p>After nearly four years with Yahoo!, Hilary has decided to move on to the next phase in her career. Hilary has played a major role at Yahoo! in driving our strategies for content, online advertising and more. I want to thank her for her contributions over the years, and wish her the best as she moves on.</p>
<p>We expect to announce the new head of the Americas region before the end of the year. There is a lot of interest in joining our team for such a key position and, in the meantime, Hilary will stay on to help with the transition.</p>
<p>Now, you all know we&#8217;ve been intensely focused on improving our operations and top line growth. And we&#8217;ve seen good progress. But there&#8217;s a lot more to do, and as we transition to a new leader for the Americas we&#8217;re taking this opportunity to double down on these efforts. <p>Today, as news BoomTown broke about the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100929/exclusive-major-meltdown-at-yahoo-as-more-top-execs-to-depart-including-u-s-head-hilary-schneider/">departure of Yahoo&#8217;s U.S. head Hilary Schneider and two other key execs</a> at the Internet giant spread, I have been on the receiving end of a spate of emails and calls and text messages from staffers at the Silicon Valley icon searching for information about what&#8217;s up at their own company.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because neither the top management of Yahoo (YHOO) nor its typically ineffectual board has communicated to its thousands of employees about exactly what is going on, nor about plans to replace bosses in charge of giant swaths of the business.</p>
<p>Now, for example, Yahoo&#8217;s ad sales execs say they don&#8217;t know who to report to, since Schneider is headed out and no one person replaced U.S. ad sales leader Joanne Bradford in Yahoo&#8217;s key moneymaking market after she left in March.</p>
<p>And media workers, such as GMs of powerful Yahoo news, sports, finance and mobile efforts, all under departing Audience head David Ko and VP of Media Jimmy Pitaro, are also wondering who is now in charge.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s my promise: I will have all internal memos here, as soon as they are released and I can get my mitts on them.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear when that will be. Sources said Yahoo might make a statement about the situation this afternoon, before the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100929/exclusive-major-meltdown-at-yahoo-as-more-top-execs-to-depart-including-u-s-head-hilary-schneider/">planned announcement tomorrow afternoon</a> about the exec departures, but it has not been determined yet.</p>
<p>But sources said Yahoo might have an exec to announce to replace at least Schneider by today, given how important sales are to the company.</p>
<p>Since Chief Product Officer Blake Irving is from Microsoft and he has brought in several execs from there to Yahoo, rumors are swirling around yet another one coming in.</p>
<p>Some outside partners are also nervous, including those staying at Microsoft.</p>
<p>In an interview just this morning with the new head of global ad sales for Microsoft (MSFT) Carolyn Everson, for example, she pointed out that Yahoo is slated to take over premium online ad sales for the software giant under the terms of their search and technology partnership in just two weeks.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll be honest,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We are a little worried.&#8221; But she added that Yahoo remains an important strategic partner and the success of the alliance is a key focus.</p>
<p>Worried? Get in line, it seems.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s how Yahoo&#8217;s top brass and board&#8211;with the help of its newly re-engaged crisis-management PR firm, Abernathy MacGregor&#8211;are already trying to spin the latest executive turmoil to hit the company:</p>
<p>Trashing those on the way out, to take focus off those remaining who have been just as responsible for driving the Internet icon and claiming that this is all part of yet another well-planned reorganization at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t believe most of it for a second. Some of it is corporate politics as usual, some of it rejiggering of events, some just not true at all.</p>
<p>After BoomTown&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100929/exclusive-major-meltdown-at-yahoo-as-more-top-execs-to-depart-including-u-s-head-hilary-schneider/">scoop earlier today</a> that Yahoo&#8217;s U.S. head Hilary Schneider, as well as Audience head David Ko and VP of Media Jimmy Pitaro, would be departing the company&#8211;all of which Yahoo is still planning to announce after the markets close on Friday&#8211;here comes this gem in a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704116004575522741904235112.html">follow-up story in The Wall Street Journal</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;[Yahoo CEO Carol] Bartz, who joined Yahoo in January 2009, is in the midst of a turnaround effort. People familiar with the matter said she is removing the company&#8217;s old guard to assemble a new team.&#8221;</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s parse this ridonkulous spin-addled blame game, shall we?</p>
<p>Bartz is, in fact, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/more-on-yahoo-reorg-in-process-ari-and-hilary-rule-but-who-is-joel-jones">very person who picked all those execs for prime responsibility</a> in her <em>last</em> reorg.</p>
<p>If they were so incompetent, why not dump them much quicker? After all, it&#8217;s not like the problems have not been mounting for months and months, with more and more talent taking off.</p>
<p>In addition, the exec exodus at Yahoo over the last year has been unrelenting and broad, encompassing way too many employees for her to act as if it were all planned and okay.</p>
<p>As to the &#8220;midst of a turnaround effort&#8221; canard that Bartz keeps insisting on, even comparing herself to Apple (AAPL) CEO <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100917/shooting-from-carol-bartzs-hip-apples-iads-are-just-awful-which-is-why-yahoo-buys-them">Steve Job&#8217;s epic journey to return that legendary company to health</a>?</p>
<p>Um, we are deep in the second year of the Bartz regime, and there appears to be no iPod-like save in sight, and it&#8217;s a little long in the tooth to keep using the turnaround excuse for all that has <em>not</em> yet happened under her command.</p>
<p>Which is to say, stock with a pulse and real growth across all metrics, as Facebook and Google (GOOG), to name a few, are showing.</p>
<p>In addition, it was Bartz herself who handed over a lot of the responsibility for the revival of Yahoo to Schneider.</p>

<p>Which meant Schneider had to be thrown under the wheels of the bus in the Journal by dragging out a very old&#8211;and tangential to the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/liveblogging-yahoos-second-quarter-earnings-call-how-do-you-solve-a-problem-like-flat-revenue/">much larger flat revenue crisis</a> at Yahoo&#8211;newspaper deal as pretty wet cannon fodder:</p>
<p>&#8220;Ms. Schneider is leaving because officials haven&#8217;t been satisfied with her performance, according to people familiar with the matter. Ms. Schneider was responsible for a 2006 deal with industry group Newspaper Consortium, in which Yahoo sold ads for newspaper websites and print editions. The effort continues but has not met Yahoo&#8217;s expectations, according to a person close to the company.&#8221;</p>
<p>Memo to readers: &#8220;People familiar with the matter,&#8221; I am guessing, would be current Yahoo execs.</p>
<p>The fact of the matter is that there have been both critics and admirers of Schneider at Yahoo, which comes as no surprise for one of its top execs. Some consider her smart and canny, while others complain of indecisiveness and slowness to act.</p>
<p>And, she has definitely had some very big whiffs, including the newspaper consortium, but most especially not finding an ad sales chief to replace Joanne Bradford, who left in March, about which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100802/yahoo-restructures-u-s-ad-sales-force-with-no-new-head-but-apparently-a-lot-of-prince-charmings/">I gave her a hard time when a very squishy structure</a> was announced.</p>
<p>And, right now, sources tell me, Yahoo&#8217;s upcoming quarterly report could be an even tougher one.</p>
<p>And that falls to Schneider, of course, who has been in charge of its many partnerships, as well as advertising sales across the key Americas region.</p>
<p>Perhaps good reason for an ouster, except I have been tracking Schneider&#8217;s status for many months now, since hearing from many sources&#8211;not her, ever, in case you wanted to know&#8211;that she had told Bartz she wanted out.</p>
<p>Maybe that is what began to sour the boss on Schneider. But to now suddenly call her performance poor seems unusual, especially when you can just as easily point to Yahoo&#8217;s disastrous and pricey marketing campaigns&#8211;it is definitely <em>not</em> You!&#8211;helmed by CMO Elisa Steele, which has failed to move the needle on key user metrics.</p>

<p>But she has a tight relationship with Bartz, so she&#8217;s all right, jack? I am dizzy from all the spinning.</p>
<p>In other words, execs make mistakes and there is a lot of blame to go around and&#8211;as the old saying goes&#8211;the buck really does stop with Bartz.</p>
<p>But, guess what? Perhaps it should be noted that Bartz has also misstepped badly of late by making a series of wild remarks that have seriously angered many partners and other companies in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>And I have heard from countless and very significant investors, all of whom are deeply concerned about her tone and recent public comments.</p>
<p>Just ask <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100726/yahoo-japan-confirms-google-switch-for-both-paid-and-algo-search">Yahoo Japan&#8217;s Masayoshi Son</a>. Or <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100916/apparently-yahoos-bartz-didnt-get-the-memo-about-avoiding-land-wars-in-asia">Alibaba&#8217;s Jack Ma in China</a>. Or the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100917/shooting-from-carol-bartzs-hip-apples-iads-are-just-awful-which-is-why-yahoo-buys-them">fine folks over at Apple</a> in Cupertino, Calif.</p>
<p>And, I can also report that several execs at Yahoo&#8217;s new search technology partner, Microsoft, are also increasingly alarmed. Said one to me yesterday: &#8220;It is becoming a little unsettling.&#8221;</p>
<p>I can say for certain that Ko, who will doubtlessly be the next to get dinged, left on his own motor, telling Bartz himself recently.</p>
<p>He was quickly followed by Pitaro, who, as I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100928/exclusive-yahoo-exec-churn-continues-with-media-head-pitaro-ready-to-bolt/">reported earlier this week</a>, is headed to another big company. No matter what the spin, his departure is a big loss, as he is well-liked inside and outside the company.</p>
<p>Then Schneider rounded out the latest trio of execs to go.</p>
<p>Thus, sources said, Yahoo is about to go on the offense, which is the expected thing to do, ready to announce a plan to move most of the product organization under Chief Product Officer Blake Irving.</p>
<p>The former Microsoft (MSFT) online exec is as sharp as a tack, in my experience, and clearly an even sharper corporate player, recently bringing in a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100909/another-microsoft-exec-to-yahoo-joining-other-ex-softies/">series of his old cohorts</a> from the software giant to take over big jobs at Yahoo.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s obviously now won some version of a corporate power play, and is now in favor with Bartz. But that means he&#8217;s being handed the entire thing.</p>
<p>Apparently, Irving has told numerous people that he plans to &#8220;rip it all down&#8221; and streamline the whole organization.</p>
<p>More rearranging at the company that has moved around the corporate living room umpteenth times over the past several years? Except it is still essentially the same room and same house.</p>
<p>Okay, Irving should probably have his choice of where the sofa goes, but as one exec wisely told me tonight: &#8220;Yahoo needs to build great products, not have another reorg&#8230;.It needs a win.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, just as board member Eric Hippeau apparently said at a recent meeting to deal with the latest executive kerfuffle.</p>
<p>Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock&#8211;who has presided over so many stumbles over the years that I have lost count&#8211;said to the room: &#8220;We need crisis management.&#8221;</p>
<p>Countered Hippeau, a longtime Internet exec who is now CEO of the Huffington Post: &#8220;What we need is revenue.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed. And innovation. And a vision. And, most of all, spin-free leadership.</p>

<p>The executive turmoil at the very top of Yahoo continues, with the company poised to announce the resignations of three top execs, including U.S. head Hilary Schneider (pictured here), according to sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>The other execs also leaving, which Yahoo (YHOO) is planning on revealing Friday: U.S. Audience head David Ko and, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/here-comes-the-yahoo-spin-cycle-so-try-boomtowns-soap-free-guide-to-whats-actually-happening/">as BoomTown previously reported</a>, VP of Media Jimmy Pitaro.</p>
<p>While some at Yahoo are trying to spin it as an ouster, sources close to the situation said that Schneider&#8211;who presides over media and advertising sales at Yahoo&#8211;has wanted to leave the company for a while, but was convinced to stay on by CEO Carol Bartz.</p>
<p>Schneider will, in fact, stay at Yahoo while it searches for her replacement. Heidrick &#038; Struggles had already been headhunting candidates for her job in recent weeks.</p>
<p>Why Ko, who works directly for Schneider, is leaving now is uncertain, although sources said a lot of product control over properties under him is being moved over to Chief Product Officer Blake Irving.</p>
<p>Irving was hired several months ago by Bartz, and he has <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100909/another-microsoft-exec-to-yahoo-joining-other-ex-softies/">brought in many former colleagues from Microsoft</a> (MSFT) to top product jobs at the company. And he&#8217;s appeared to have won the latest corporate power play too.</p>
<p>This entire mess&#8211;and that&#8217;s precisely what it is&#8211;calls into question the tenure of Bartz, a tough-talking, cost-cutting exec who was brought in to clean up Yahoo after the maelstrom around the failed takeover attempt by Microsoft several years ago.</p>
<p>She replaced co-founder Jerry Yang and came in with guns blazing and styling herself as an agent of change.</p>
<p>Except not too much as changed&#8211;except for finally striking a search technology deal with Microsoft&#8211;as the exodus of talent from Yahoo increases, advertising revenue growth is anemic, innovation is stalled, metrics are weak and the stock remains moribund.</p>
<p>In addition, Bartz&#8217;s frequent shoot-from-the-hip remarks appear to have alienated a number of partners, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100916/apparently-yahoos-bartz-didnt-get-the-memo-about-avoiding-land-wars-in-asia/">most recently in Asia</a>.</p>
<p>This week, according to sources, some board members had an emergency meeting at Yahoo&#8217;s Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ to try to figure out how to deal with the burgeoning management issue.</p>
<p>Some speculate that they will hire a second-in-command to Bartz, who might be able to take over for her when her contract is up in 18 months.</p>
<p>Yahoo declined to comment.</p>

<p>Yahoo and Electus, the multiplatform content studio headed by former NBC entertainment head Ben Silverman, debuted its first original, branded entertainment programming tonight with <a href="http://readysetdance.yahoo.com">&#8220;Ready, Set, Dance!&#8221;</a></p>
<p>The site, which is now live on Yahoo Music and sponsored by State Farm, merges the candid-camera phenomenon with reality television and &#8220;aims to tap into the pop culture interest in television dance shows and dance videos on the Web&#8230;.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Yahoo (YHOO) site is relatively spare right now, with only one episode, titled &#8220;Magic Sparkle Chunk and Frisky Ris.&#8221;</p>
<p>Reads the description of the show: &#8220;Will&#8217;s &#8216;Magic Sparkle Chunk&#8217; style is invading the tranquility of Madison Square Park, while Marisa and her moves will do their best to win over the Times Square crowds.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Magic Sparkle Chunk&#8221; is as described, and it is both riveting and humiliating. Which is pretty much the point.</p>
<p>Even though no one knows about it, there are already 29 comments, such as: &#8220;He&#8217;s got chutzpah&#8211;besides, if it&#8217;s all about fun, he&#8217;s got it. She was a bit too serious and honestly&#8230;just not as entertaining as the chunky shiney thingie wingie.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100107/yahoo-inks-content-deal-with-former-nbc-exec-ben-siliverman">partnership with Electus was unveiled in January</a> at the Consumer Electronics Show by Yahoo execs Joanne Bradford and Jimmy Pitaro, both of whom you can see in a BoomTown video interview below.</p>
<p>Ironically, U.S. sales head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">Bradford left Yahoo earlier this year</a> for Demand Media, and Pitaro, as I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100928/exclusive-yahoo-exec-churn-continues-with-media-head-pitaro-ready-to-bolt/">reported today</a>, is expected to leave the company soon from his post as VP of Media.</p>
<p>Silverman left the broadcast-television network under a cloud last year, but immediately announced he had struck a deal with Barry Diller’s IAC/InterActiveCorp (IACI) to form a studio–called Electus&#8211;to make multiplatform content that is backed by big brand advertisers.</p>
<p>The move is similar to a new kind of production company started several years ago by former ABC and Yahoo exec Lloyd Braun and his partner, Gail Berman.</p>
<p>Braun has created online programming for Microsoft (MSFT), including an innovative celebrity site called Wonderwall, as well as producing television shows for networks.</p>
<p>Silverman&#8217;s take was to focus on an episodic style, although much of what has been done online so far in this genre by many others has been only moderately successful.</p>
<p>But execs at Yahoo believed that advertisers have been looking for opportunities to put their brands near quality content online.</p>
<p>With the deal, which has been touted by CEO Carol Bartz, Yahoo is putting big hopes in Silverman, who had been a successful producer of television programming in his early career.</p>
<p>But his tenure at NBC was marked by a lot of negative publicity about him personally and, more importantly, by a sharp downturn in ratings.</p>

<p>Last week at a Goldman Sachs (GS) investment conference, voluble Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz tried to minimize the impact of the recent spate of significant executive departures at the Internet giant.</p>
<p>But, she noted: “There are a few more we&#8217;re going to lose.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Bartz is right&#8211;according to several sources with knowledge of the situation, Yahoo&#8217;s well-liked VP of Media, Jimmy Pitaro (pictured here), is expected to be leaving the company soon.</p>
<p>Rumors around Pitaro&#8217;s departure have been swirling inside and outside Yahoo, especially this week. Bartz and other execs are still trying hard to keep Pitaro, but sources said his departure would likely be to another company.</p>
<p>If he goes, it will certainly be a loss for Yahoo (YHOO). Pitaro is a longtime veteran and experienced digital-media exec, and he has run a number of its key media properties, such as Sports.</p>
<p>He now presides over all its other powerful media properties, such as News and Finance. Pitaro reports to David Ko, Yahoo&#8217;s U.S. Audience head.</p>
<p>Pitaro follows a number of key Yahoo execs out the door recently, either via changes in structure or because of increasing dissatisfaction with management and the company&#8217;s moribund stock price.</p>
<p>Adding Pitaro to the pile will only increase pressure on Bartz, as well as U.S. SVP Hilary Schneider, to show investors that the Silicon Valley icon has a clear and innovative plan amidst the executive turmoil.</p>
<p>Yahoo declined to comment.</p>

<p>Whilst in Santa Monica, Calif., this week, BoomTown stopped in at the YahooPlex for a quick chat with the Internet giant&#8217;s Jimmy Pitaro, who is VP of media.</p>
<p>The focus was a high-profile blog called The Upshot, Yahoo&#8217;s effort to delve deeper into the new push to determine content selections based on search.</p>
<p>While some consider such efforts as a &#8220;democratizing&#8221; of the news, others are more concerned about relying on algorithms to determine the best coverage and the implications for a society guided by its own searches.</p>
<p>That has not stopped the trend from growing, with companies such as Demand Media using freelancers to create millions of articles. Yahoo recently bought a competitor, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100518/yahoo-snaps-up-associated-content-for-90-million-to-counter-aol-and-demand-media">Associated Content</a>, to jump into the game.</p>
<p>The Upshot is a little different, essentially using analysis of popular search words or topics to inform the news staff.</p>
<p>Articles are then produced for the Yahoo blog based on this audience data, on a wider range of coverage than the more typical how-to articles produced using this method.</p>
<p>In this video, Pitaro dismissed worries that Yahoo (YHOO) coverage would be guided solely by a formula for user-driven, advertiser-coddling, money-making-only content, but it is clear the idea of using search as an editorial tool is the wave of the future as far as Yahoo is concerned.</p>

<p>Although serial entrepreneur Al Warms sold his start-up to Yahoo and ultimately left the Internet giant to launch a new one, he is coming back a bit via an interesting partnership.</p>
<p>Warms&#8217;s <a href="http://www.appolicious.com">Appolicious</a> is aimed at encouraging discovery and social networking in the mobile apps market.</p>
<p>Now Appolicious will carry Yahoo&#8217;s brand at the top of its site and be surfaced throughout Yahoo&#8217;s News, Sports and other powerful media properties.</p>
<p>Everything will be co-branded. The words, &#8220;In association with Yahoo,&#8221; for example, will appear on the Appolicious site.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think it is a pretty huge deal in what it means to where apps have gotten in such a short period of time,&#8221; said Warms in an interview with BoomTown. &#8220;We want to make these apps relevant for Yahoo users.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s VP for Media, Jimmy Pitaro, said that the deal was struck to make the increasingly complex world of mobile apps simpler.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re focused on making people&#8217;s online lives easier,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Apps are huge, but also confusing to many, so we want them to be in the relevant place they belong and in context for our users.&#8221;</p>
<p>A baseball story, for example, might surface various related baseball apps, while a celebrity post would offer very different ones.</p>
<p>The partnership will be a big boost for Warms and Appolicious, given the huge traffic generated by Yahoo&#8217;s content offerings.</p>
<p>Warms <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070914/day-59-yahoo-buys-buzztracker">sold his Participate Media</a>, along with its BuzzTracker content aggregator, to Yahoo in late 2007.</p>
<p>Warms left Yahoo (YHOO) in late 2008 and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090901/serial-entrepreneur-al-warms-debuts-appolicious-hoping-iphone-apps-fans-will-find-it-delicious">started Appolicious</a> in May 2009 with about $500,000 in seed funding.</p>
<p>The start-up has since raised another $1.5 million.</p>
<p>Appolicious is kind of a combination of Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo, with some Yelp sprinkled in, but devoted solely to organizing and making sense of the exploding app galaxy in the universe of smartphones.</p>
<p>Right now, the innovative site focuses on iPhone and iPad apps, as well as other mobile platforms such as Android from Google (GOOG). Appolicious plans to add apps for the BlackBerry from Research in Motion (RIMM).</p>
<p>Using premium content, recommendations of friends and people like you&#8211;as well as a variety of lists, feeds, popularity rankings, images and videos&#8211;the idea is to do what the iTunes Store does not.</p>
<p>Namely, make sense of the plenitude of apps out there, most of which are on the iPhone.</p>
<p>To make that happen, users of the service also can list all the apps they have in an App Library, so others can see them.</p>
<p>Warms&#8217;s business plan is largely advertising, including a focus on attracting brands that want to be in front of apps consumers.</p>

<p>The surprise move is sure to have reverberations throughout the online advertising arena, but more so at Yahoo (YHOO), where Bradford&#8217;s job encompasses a wide range of key revenue-generating duties.</p>
<p>She has also been tapped as one of the execs to play a key role in the recently approved search and online ad partnership with Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Yahoo declined to comment. BoomTown has also contacted Demand and is awaiting comment.</p>
<p>Bradford had actually once been a Microsoft exec, serving as VP and chief media officer of MSN Media Network. She had worked at BusinessWeek before that.</p>
<p>Bradford <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080909/yahoo-brings-in-drum-roll-please-a-former-microsoft-exec-to-head-ad-sales/">came to Yahoo in the fall of 2008</a>, at the tail end of the tenure of Co-founder Jerry Yang, who stepped in as CEO after the previous CEO Terry Semel departed.</p>
<p>Immediately previous to her job at Yahoo, she had been helming national ad sales at then-trendy Los Angeles-based ad services company <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080313/microsoft-exec-sprints-over-to-spot-runner/">Spot Runner</a>.</p>
<p>Demand will be her second time going from a large company to more of a start-up.</p>
<p>But&#8211;unlike the troubled Spot Runner where Bradford worked for only six months&#8211;Demand has been on a growth tear of late with a social media strategy that is also being pursued by AOL (AOL) and others.</p>
<p>It owns heavily trafficked sites, such as how-to juggernaut eHow and the health- and fitness-focused Livestrong.com, putting Demand in the list of the top 20 Web properties.</p>
<p>It reportedly has about $200 million in annual revenue&#8211;mostly from advertising, but also from a domain registration business&#8211;and is profitable with several hundred employees.</p>

<p>The Santa Monica, Calif.-based company is headed by serial entrepreneur Richard Rosenblatt (pictured here), former chairman of Intermix Media. Intermix was the parent company of MySpace, which was sold to News Corp. (NWS).</p>
<p>Armed with an astonishing $355 million in funding from a range of prominent investors, he has been trying to fight some mainstream media depictions of his social media content company, especially one report that called Demand a “content mill.”</p>
<p>Via its Demand Studios, the company uses an army of freelancers to produce all kinds of content for its sites and others, using a complex automated system, but which also includes vetting and editing.</p>
<p>In fact, irked at the characterization of Demand as a content spammer, Rosenblatt even <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100111/demand-media-is-mad-as-hell-and-well-pens-a-manifesto-and-here-it-is">issued a manifesto</a> for Demand in January.</p>
<p>&#8220;There has been so much misinformation about our model and what we actually do, that I thought it was a good idea for our company and those who work for us to lay out our principles,&#8221; said Rosenblatt in an interview with me at the time. &#8220;We are so different from traditional journalism, which I have nothing but admiration for, so it was time to make people understand that.&#8221;</p>
<p>The role of Demand Media, said Rosenblatt, was to help readers solve problems, laugh and get good advice, while figuring out how to create a profitable media business in the digital age.</p>
<p>(Walt Mossberg and I have invited Rosenblatt to share the stage at the eighth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference this June, along with former Wall Street Journal editor Paul Steiger, who is trying to save investigative journalism at a nonprofit called ProPublica, to talk about it all.)</p>

<p>If Rosenblatt is successful, Demand appears to be aiming for an IPO or merger with another company. Ironically, Demand has also been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080709/demand-medias-richard-rosenblatt-speaks-and-says-hes-not-for-sale-to-yahoo-for-now">eyed by Yahoo in the past</a>, as a possible acquisition.</p>
<p>Nabbing a top Web exec like Bradford from Yahoo is obviously a definite step in raising the stakes for Demand with big, established advertisers.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because Bradford is well-regarded in the industry and is a prominent player. She recently signed a high-profile <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100107/yahoo-inks-content-deal-with-former-nbc-exec-ben-siliverman">deal with Hollywood producer Ben Silverman</a> to create premium content for Yahoo.</p>
<p>Bradford&#8217;s departure will be seen, both internally and externally, as a definite blow to turnaround efforts by CEO Carol Bartz. Bradford currently reports to Hilary Schneider, EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s U.S unit.</p>
<p>My reporting does not indicate that Yahoo&#8217;s top brass know about Bradford&#8217;s expected move, so it is not clear who would replace her at the Silicon Valley icon, which has been hard hit by an exodus of talent over the last two years.</p>
<p>Internal candidates could include 11-year Yahoo veteran <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/top-ad-sales-exec-on-west-coast-departs-yahoo/">Mitch Spolan</a>, VP of North American sales, or <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091008/its-opposite-day-yahoo-grabs-a-microsoft-exec/">Seth Dallaire</a>, a former Microsoft exec whom Bradford brought to the company last fall as VP of mid-market sales, a newly-created role responsible for all mid-market sales efforts across search and display advertising.</p>

<p>Only a few days ago, the <strong> AllThingsDigital</strong> team left home freshly pressed, pockets full of cash (or at least as full as journalists&#8217; pockets get these days) and ready to take on the geek horde at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Walt, Kara, Katie, John and Peter had big plans, but in the end, even a copy of Eric Boyd&#8217;s &#8220;How to Count Cards Like an MIT Freshman&#8221; could not save them. They did do a heck of a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/topics/ces/">lot of reporting on CES</a> though. At least they could bring back some news, if not new Ferraris from the dealership at the Wynn. </p>
<p>BoomTown is no stranger to Vegas, so Kara got settled in quick and spent day one hopping up and down The Strip to see presentations and fiddle with gadgets of all sorts. She caught up with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100107/the-night-the-lights-went-out-at-ces-and-back-on-of-course/">Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer after he rocked his keynote</a> just a little too hard and the power went out. I guess maybe he shouldn&#8217;t have turned that tablet prototype all the way up to 11. Kara caught the scoop on Electus&#8217;s Ben Silverman and his <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100107/yahoo-inks-content-deal-with-former-nbc-exec-ben-siliverman/">new deal with Yahoo</a>. It seems the Internet portal has brought him on to &#8220;produce content&#8221; for its new you-centric efforts. Yahoo (YHOO) is hanging its hopes on Silverman, who had success in his early career producing for TV. Kara even got the other side of the deal, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100108/yahoos-bradford-and-pitaro-talk-about-content-deal-with-silvermans-electus/">catching up with Jimmy Pitaro</a>, who heads Yahoo&#8217;s Vertical Audiences Experience, and SVP of North American Revenue Joanne Bradford. Kara hasn&#8217;t actually made it back to the City by the Bay yet, so we&#8217;ll keep you posted on when she resurfaces. Vegas can be a cruel mistress. </p>
<p>John was a CES coverage juggernaut this week, filing post after post or indispensable, up-to-the-minute CES nerdery. Early in the festivities, Intel (INTC) opened the door on its <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100107/intel%e2%80%99s-ces-chip-blitz/">newest family of Core processors</a>. With model names like i3 and i5 and with a feature called &#8220;Turbo,&#8221; you know they have to be good. The real story is that the release of these chips puts Intel a solid year ahead of expected releases from AMD (AMD). Though there were no reported sightings of an iSlate, John did deliver a little nugget from the CES rumor mill about their manufacture. Analysts are expecting the device to have an <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100108/apple-slate-to-feature-aluminum-chassis-q2-ship-date/">aluminum chassis</a> when it may or may not be shown to the world at an unconfirmed Apple event Jan. 27. John was our correspondent in the audience at <strong>AllThingsDigital</strong>&#8216;s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100108/coming-up-at-330-pm-pst-walt-and-kara-live-from-las-vegas/">Mini D event at CES</a>. While there were posts aplenty, it was comments from Palm (PALM) CEO Jon Rubinstein that have been making the rounds on the Internet. Everyone was a little surprised when Rubinstein <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100108/rubinstein/">claimed never to have used an iPhone</a>. Weekend Update has used a Pixi and we might just believe him. </p>
<p>Peter was in full effect at CES this week, trolling around CES with his sizable entourage. Okay, maybe the MediaMemo groupies aren&#8217;t that numerous, but Peter was a reporting rockstar nonetheless. In advance of his onstage interview with Netflix (NFLX) CEO Reed Hastings, Peter wrote about the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100106/the-netflix-and-warner-bros-pact-subscribers-wait-for-new-movies-get-more-on-the-web/">deal inked between the rental giant and Warner Bros</a> that would delay availability of new DVD releases by Netflix in exchange for more streamable content from the studio. In a quick breather from CES news, Peter reported that Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Eric Schmidt and some other Technorati were en route to <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100107/guess-whos-coming-to-dinner-eric-schmidt-and-the-technorati-visit-the-state-department/">dinner with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton</a> at the State Department. No word on which reality TV stars would be crashing that party. MediaMemo rounded out the week with a post about Hearst&#8217;s effort to save its sinking ship. It turns out that when the ship is in trouble, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100108/hearst-is-ready-to-show-off-its-skiff-platform-but-it-doesnt-want-to-tell-quite-yet-is-anyone-ready-to-buy/">you turn to a Skiff for help</a>. The newspaper giant has reportedly plowed $35 million into the nautically-named e-reader, and Peter brought us a sneak peek. </p>
<p>Our very own Mr. and Ms. CES (Walt and Katie) may come home with blisters and a bad case of &#8220;qwerty thumb&#8221; after handling so many new gadgets this week. The Personal Technology column was all about <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20100105/googles-nexus-one-is-bold-new-face-in-super-smartphones/">Google&#8217;s Nexus One</a>, the latest super-smartphone from everyone&#8217;s favorite search giant. Walt&#8217;s review was a mixed bag for the Nexus One, which got high marks for advancing the Android platform, for forcing the other super smartphone giants to up the ante on their cameras and for some of it&#8217;s cool Google-connected features. He wasn&#8217;t as upbeat on the menu-driven interface of the phone and had qualms about the four hard-wired buttons. The battery life for some features also wasn&#8217;t as competitive as it might have been. </p>
<p>Katie spent some pre-CES time investigating the so-called <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20100106/giving-your-pictures-some-va-va-zoom/">mega-zoom digital camera offerings</a> from Nikon, Panasonic (PC) and Casio. These in-between cameras aren&#8217;t quite so cumbersome as DSLRs but offer serious zooming capabilities with lots of other pro level features. Katie fell in love with the higher picture quality and flexibility, even if the cameras are a little bulkier than the smartphone she&#8217;d been using for her photo needs previously. All in all, though, she gave the class of cameras high marks and said they were a great next step for people looking to take their pictures a little farther. </p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As luck would have it, BoomTown was at a dinner at the Consumer Electronics Show where both Yahoo&#8217;s Jimmy Pitaro, who heads its Vertical Audiences Experience, and SVP of North American Revenue Joanne Bradford were also in attendance.</p>
<p>The pair played key roles in a deal <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100107/yahoo-inks-content-deal-with-former-nbc-exec-ben-siliverman/">Yahoo unveiled last night to partner with former NBC entertainment programming head Ben Silverman</a>, in which his new Electus studio in Hollywood will create content for the Internet portal.</p>
<p>(Ironically, the party in Las Vegas was thrown by former ABC television and Yahoo exec Lloyd Braun, who runs a multiplatform production company similar to Silverman&#8217;s.)</p>
<p>Thus, I took the opportunity to talk to Pitaro and Bradford about the deal and what is means for Yahoo (YHOO), which is seeking to differentiate itself by stressing its strengths in premium content and advertising.</p>
<p>Yahoo and Electus are holding a press conference about the partnership this morning at CES.</p>

<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091118/yahoos-bartz-shuffles-the-exec-deck-filling-audience-and-other-top-slots-is-the-board-next-for-a-makeover/">recently reported that Ko was the likely person</a> to take over as North American Audience head at Yahoo (YHOO), reporting to U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider.</p>
<p>With purview over programming and more for the main Yahoo media properties, such as News and Finance, he fills a slot left by the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/yahoo-audience-head-jeff-dossett-expected-to-depart-company/">departure of Jeff Dossett</a> in May.</p>
<p>Since then, the key Yahoo content division has been run jointly by Jimmy Pitaro, who heads Vertical Audience Experiences for Yahoo, and Tim Mayer, who is in charge of Search &#038; Social Applications, as well as the powerful homepage of Yahoo. Both now report to Ko, who joined Yahoo in 2000, sources said.</p>
<p>But, in a related move, product development for mobile has moved from under Ko to CTO and EVP of Products Ari Balogh.</p>
<p>A similar <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090222/yahoo-media-unit-to-get-a-reorg-too/">move of Yahoo&#8217;s media properties</a> took place earlier this year, shifting key tech development responsibility to a global product organization at Yahoo&#8217;s HQ in Sunnyvale, Calif.</p>
<p>Previously, as had been the case in mobile, such development had been mostly carried out by individual media properties.</p>
<p>The argument for the shift posits that centralizing product development of Yahoo offerings drives efficiencies, saves money, eliminates redundancies and accelerates growth around the world.</p>
<p>Those who do not like the idea think it is wrong to separate the development of a product from programming because the two are intricately dependent and need to be tweaked delicately.</p>
<p>But, said one source, mobile has been deemed by CEO Carol Bartz as &#8220;part of the core&#8221; at Yahoo instead of more an experimental offering as it has been viewed internally.</p>
<p>Thus, mobile apparently needs to be closely aligned to all product development going forward.</p>
<p>Ironically, one of Yahoo&#8217;s more high-profile mobile efforts, its Yahoo Go mobile software application and portal, which was launched to much fanfare at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas almost four years ago, will be shuttered Jan. 12, 2010.</p>
<p>Now, under Ko, Yahoo&#8217;s mobile efforts have been centered around building apps for smartphones, although that market has become increasingly dominated by players such as Apple (AAPL) with its iPhone, Google (GOOG) and its Android effort and many others.</p>
<p>Google also just bought an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091109/google-acquires-admob-for-750-million-in-stock-the-press-release">innovative mobile advertising company, AdMob</a>, which gives it a headstart in this nascent arena.</p>
<p>Without its own device and a dominating strategy, Yahoo must use its Web heft to push its content into the mobile space.</p>
<p>Presumably, that is the thinking behind giving Yahoo&#8217;s mobile and media properties the same boss.</p>
<p>Ko, who has worked in a variety of areas at Yahoo, took over as SVP of Yahoo Mobile after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/connected-life-head-marco-boerries-to-leave-yahoo">Marco Boerries left in late February</a> as EVP of the Connected Device Division, which now does not exist under that name.</p>
<p>He had run Yahoo&#8217;s mobile business in the Asia Pacific region.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://mobile.yahoo.com/newsroom/management">Ko&#8217;s Yahoo bio</a>, he previously worked at Salomon Smith Barney as a senior associate and analyst. He is a graduate of New York University&#8217;s Stern School of Business.</p>
<p>Ko, who lives in San Francisco with his family, the bio notes, inexplicably &#8220;enjoys reading tech blogs.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is making the most substantive changes in her exec ranks since she did a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/hurricane-carol-bartz-could-announce-major-yahoo-management-reorg-next-week/">massive restructuring of its staff</a> in late February, according to sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>&#8220;She is continuing to clean the place up,&#8221; said one top exec about the moves, which are likely to be announced internally tomorrow.</p>
<p>Among the shifts in management will be filling the slot left by the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/yahoo-audience-head-jeff-dossett-expected-to-depart-company">departure of North American Audience head Jeff Dossett</a> in May.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE</strong>: Sources say Yahoo&#8217;s head of mobile, David Ko, will get the job of top Audience exec, although it is not clear if he will have the same portfolio has former media heads at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Since Dossett left, his job has been split between Jimmy Pitaro, who runs Vertical Audience Experiences, and Tim Mayer, who is in charge of Search &#038; Social Applications. They both currently report to U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider.</p>
<p>The job of Audience head is a key role, given that Yahoo&#8217;s powerful media properties are among its most valuable assets. In recent months, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090903/product-management-engineering-and-ui-design-for-yahoo-news-moving-to-taiwan">Yahoo has made some major changes</a> in the way it creates its juggernaut News property.</p>
<p>Also to be filled is the job being done by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090920/yahoo-corporate-partnership-svp-schinella-departing">Corporate Partnership SVP Jim Schinella</a>, who, as BoomTown previously reported, is set to leave at the end of the year.</p>
<p>I could not determine who will take Schinella&#8217;s job, inside or out.</p>
<p>Interestingly, Yahoo has <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/yahoo-poised-to-name-new-international-head-after-five-month-look-see-at-the-crowned-web-heads-of-europe">yet to name an international head</a>.</p>
<p>Sources said the company had filled the position, using a headhunter, but the London-based media exec candidate backed out at the last minute. That  meant Yahoo had to restart its search.</p>
<p>There might also be other top exec changes, all part of Bartz&#8217;s consolidation of power at Yahoo. She has named a spate of new top execs from outside, but has also kept some from the regime of former CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang.</p>
<p>These staffing moves have come even as a stream of execs continued to depart the Silicon Valley Internet giant, including, most recently, <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/11/16/right-media-founder-to-leave-yahoo/">Mike Walrath</a>, who was SVP of advertising strategy. Walrath had led Right Media, the online ad exchange Yahoo bought for $680 million in 2007.</p>
<p>Walrath was widely expected to leave Yahoo in July, at the completion of  his earnout from the acquisition, sources said, so the move was more sudden than expected internally.</p>
<p>Sources noted that Bartz moved Walrath&#8217;s departure forward in order to announce a new strategy for Right Media focused on premium publishers and to dump those ad networks and publishers of lesser ilk.</p>
<p>Whether this will stop the competitive onslaught in the ad exchange space is an open question given that Google has entered the fray significantly and that Facebook is widely expected to bolster its efforts.</p>
<p>Lastly, several sources said that there are also likely to be more changes on Yahoo&#8217;s board, which has seen the departure of two members recently.</p>
<p>In September, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090925/yahoo-loses-board-member-wilderotter-to-resign">Maggie Wilderotter</a> said she would leave the board by year&#8217;s end. And former Yahoo nemesis and investor <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091023/goodbye-to-all-that-icahn-leaves-yahoo-board">Carl Icahn</a> left the board in late October.</p>
<p>Whether Yahoo will replace them or keep its current size of 10 directors is not clear.</p>
<p>Also possible, several sources said, would be Bartz taking the chairman title, which is currently held by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090114/yahoos-decker-resigned-with-class-now-chairman-bostock-should-exit-stage-right-too/">Roy Bostock</a>. Bostock, along with Yang, played a key role in its botched takeover battle with Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Bartz finally successfully struck a sweeping search and advertising partnership with the software giant this summer, which is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091118/exclusive-yahoo-and-microsoft-poised-to-finally-sign-definitive-search-and-ad-agreement/">moving closer to being launched</a>.</p>

<p>It was announced internally that Dossett has resigned and his responsibilities have been assumed by Jimmy Pitaro, who runs Vertical Audience Experiences for Yahoo, and Tim Mayer, who is in charge of Search &#038; Social Applications. They will jointly lead the North America Audience business, reporting to U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider.</p>
<p>Dossett has been in charge of all of Yahoo&#8217;s media assets, including its powerful News, Sports and Finance content sites.</p>
<p>He has been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090222/yahoo-media-unit-to-get-a-reorg-too/">rejiggering the media unit</a> since he arrived last year, including centralizing product development.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081103/as-boomtown-said-microsofts-jeff-dossett-joins-yahoo/">Dossett joined Yahoo last November</a>, coming to the company from Microsoft (MSFT), where he was MSN executive producer and general manager.</p>
<p>In his job at MSN, Dossett was the lead for audience, content and programming strategy and execution in the U.S.</p>
<p>He had worked at the company since 1991, in a variety of sales and marketing jobs in Canada, and later worked on strategy and business development for MSN.</p>
<p>Dossett was also CEO of Carpoint, now MSN Autos, and was GM of its real estate arm.</p>
<p>He also took two years off from Microsoft in 2002 to climb the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, finally reaching the summit of Mount Everest in May of 2004.</p>
<p>Dossett reached the summit of Everest again for a second time last year.</p>

<p>Neeraj Khemlani (pictured here), Yahoo&#8217;s general manager and executive editor of news, is set to leave his job&#8211;right in the midst of a major restructuring of its media unit&#8211;to work at Hearst Corp.</p>
<p>Khemlani&#8217;s departure was announced to his staff at Yahoo (YHOO) today and confirmed by the press release from Hearst below.</p>
<p>While Khemlani was in line to head one of the three main prongs of the new content organization, running a possible network programming arm, sources inside and outside Yahoo said he instead has opted to take a job as VP and Special Assistant to the CEO for Digital Media at Hearst.</p>
<p>Khemlani is not leaving due to the upcoming changes at Yahoo, said sources, but because he got a &#8220;compelling&#8221; offer to work for a more traditional media company in a range of businesses, from newspapers and magazines to broadcast, helping turbocharge their digital efforts.</p>
<p>Khemlani, who came to Yahoo from a long stint as a producer at the television news show &#8220;60 Minutes,&#8221; will be reporting to the privately-held media company&#8217;s vice chairman and CEO, Frank Bennack.</p>
<p>Khemlani, several sources said, told his bosses at Yahoo&#8211;U.S. Audience head Jeff Dossett and U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider&#8211;on Friday of his plans right when the pair were in the midst of planning a major shift in how media are managed and created at Yahoo.</p>

<p>At Hearst, he will be a resource for its many divisions, which all have their own digital operations, and he will be based in New York. (Khemlani currently has been working out of Yahoo&#8217;s media offices in Santa Monica, Calif.)</p>
<p>In a press release from Hearst, Bennack said: “Hearst’s major operating groups have all made substantial progress towards our corporate objective of fully participating in the digital transformation. The creation of this new position is designed to accelerate the progress through greater cooperation and synergy across divisional lines. Neeraj is uniquely equipped to help me and my colleagues realize that goal.”</p>
<p>Ironically, Hearst has a strong relationship with Yahoo, as a content partner.</p>
<p>UPDATE: In a Hearst press release Khemlani said: “I am delighted to join Hearst Corporation. We are witnessing the reemergence of content and media driving value in the new world and Hearst is uniquely positioned to realize that value across multiple digital platforms and distribution points. Remember, we&#8217;re only in the second inning of the Internet. Hearst, with all its assets and investments, expects to take a commanding lead by the seventh?inning stretch.&#8221;</p>
<p>As <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090222/yahoo-media-unit-to-get-a-reorg-too/">BoomTown reported yesterday</a>, the management of the media unit is about to be rejiggered dramatically.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s part of big changes coming for Yahoo, including an even more massive management reorganization that new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz could announce this week, as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/hurricane-carol-bartz-could-announce-major-yahoo-management-reorg-next-week/">this column reported on Friday</a>.</p>
<p>Under a plan being considered, the media unit will be split into three parts: vertical programming, network programming and search monetization.</p>
<p>This comes after some other recent changes in the way media product development is done&#8211;moving to a centralized global structure, rather than residing in individual media units&#8211;which was also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/yahoo-content-model-gets-remixed-as-product-development-is-globally-centralized/">reported here last week</a>.</p>
<p>Now, if they go through with current plans to reorganize the media unit, Schneider and Dossett must find another head of network programming.</p>
<p>Several inside sources said that vertical programming will probably roll up under current Sports GM Jimmy Pitaro. And Tim Mayer&#8211;who is now VP of search monetization and distribution&#8211;would probably remain in his job, with perhaps even more monetization duties added.</p>

<p>Khemlani was formerly vice president and general manager of Yahoo! News &#038; Information as well as Yahoo! Originals. In this position, he managed the business and products of Yahoo! News, Tech, Weather and Education, and the editorial programming for Yahoo! Finance, as executive editor. He also directed original content programming, including product design, content production and sponsorship, across all Yahoo! channels; and initiated and oversaw strategic business development content deals with major media companies.</p>
<p>From 1998 to 2006, Khemlani was a producer for CBS News’ 60 Minutes and 60 Minutes II, and a creative consultant to Imagine Entertainment, ABC Entertainment, from 2000 to 2001, where he advised scriptwriters. His television experience also includes producer positions with Crile Communications and ABC News, where he produced segments for Nightline, Good Morning America, Peter Jennings Reporting and ABC News Specials.</p>

<p>Khemlani began his career as a newspaper reporter, writing for The New York Times and The Post?Standard in Syracuse, N.Y. Khemlani holds a master’s of science in journalism from Columbia University, where he graduated with honors, and a bachelor’s in communications from Cornell University, where he was the editor?in?chief of The Cornell Daily Sun.</p>
