<p>According to sources close to the situation, Dow Jones is losing its top online editor.</p>
<p>Kevin Delaney, managing editor of The Journal Online &#8212; or WSJ.com, as it is better known &#8212; is taking a job at the Atlantic Media Company, sources said.</p>
<p>The move is a blow to the Journal&#8217;s online efforts, as Delaney, who got the top job in late 2009, is a well-regarded journalist and editor.</p>
<p>(He is certainly an <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> fave of those at the Dow Jones mother ship, but he <em>still</em> did not call me back to comment! Thanks a lot, Kevin!)</p>
<p>It has not yet been determined who will succeed him at WSJ.com, sources said. Delaney is not leaving immediately.</p>
<p>Delaney joined the media giant in 1992, was a prominent tech reporter in Silicon Valley, and was also deputy managing editor at WSJ.com.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear what Delaney&#8217;s new position will be at the Washington, D.C.-based Atlantic Media, which is best known for its flagship Atlantic Monthly magazine and also the National Journal. </p>
<p>But sources said his role will be part of a new content initiative the company is undertaking.</p>
<p>The well-known Atlantic has recently transformed itself from a coffee-table, big-think analog offering, which still is published, to focusing more on its online content site.</p>
<p>That includes its sassy Atlantic Wire, which is edited by former Gawker editor Gabriel Snyder. Two stories today, for example, are titled &#8220;Where the &#8216;Crybaby&#8217; Gingrich Meme Came From&#8221; and &#8220;Cain Promises &#8216;Unconventional&#8217; Endorsement, Jokes Ensue.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not your intellectually snotty uncle&#8217;s Atlantic!</p>
<p>I am looking forward to seeing what Delaney is up to soon.</p>

<p>Yahoo actually let me talk with its new CEO Scott Thompson this morning, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120104/confirmed-yahoo-names-paypal-head-scoot-thompson-as-new-head/">after the company announced</a> it had hired him as its latest leader.</p>
<p>In an interview, the man who is leaving a job running eBay&#8217;s large and lucrative PayPal online payments unit was affable and &#8212; <em>dare I say it</em> &#8212; seemed very sweet, as well as gung ho on Yahoo&#8217;s prospects going forward.</p>
<p>Joking about how he took the job only because eBay and Yahoo are located close by each other in Silicon Valley and the commute was just as easy, Thompson opened by noting that those working at the online commerce giant have always had a &#8220;keen appreciation for what each other was doing.&#8221;</p>
<p>He said that when he was approached in November about the Yahoo job, although sources said it was just offered this week and took eBay by surprise.</p>
<p>Still, soon after being contacted by Yahoo&#8217;s exec recruiters, Thompson said he began &#8220;exploring in more detail what&#8217;s actually here.&#8221; As he did so, he added, he &#8220;became progressively more fascinated&#8221; that Yahoo had more promise than has been assumed in recent years.</p>
<p>&#8220;Its potential is still enormous, but the dialogue has not been about what the company is,&#8221; Thompson said. &#8220;I want to get this wonderful brand to where it could be again &#8230; so, as a starting point, this is a great starting point.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thompson&#8217;s premise is based on his belief that we are still in the early days of the Internet. And, because he is a Boston native &#8212; making him, of course, an ardent fan of its beloved Red Sox &#8212; he used baseball as a metaphor.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s early innings, and there are the next eight innings in front of us,&#8221; he said, noting that he was in the stands with his father when catcher Carlton Fisk hit that famous game-winning home run in the 12th inning of the sixth game of the World Series in 1975.</p>
<p>Note to everyone who is not an obsessive fan like Thompson (and also, I might add, Walt Mossberg): It did take the Red Sox from 1918 to 2004 to actually finally win the Series again, so maybe Yahoo has a chance!</p>
<p>&#8220;This remains a great business, and I have no doubt its best days are ahead of Yahoo,&#8221; said Thompson, in that same hopeful spirit of this-year&#8217;s-gonna-be-the-one.</p>
<p>Thompson noted that he is fully cognizant of the major troubles at the company recently, and had a &#8220;real sense of urgency, but not by moving at breakneck speed, because you just do bad stuff faster.&#8221;</p>
<p>Instead, he said, he hopes to focus Yahoo the same way he did PayPal, by innovating, making commitments and keeping them, and overperforming.</p>
<p>None are easy tasks, and all have stymied Yahoo in the recent past. Thompson said that he thinks it might be because of not focusing equally on both consumers and Yahoo&#8217;s partners and advertisers.</p>
<p>He admitted that his lack of advertising experience was clear &#8212; it could be problematic, because it&#8217;s Yahoo&#8217;s biggest business &#8212; but said, &#8220;I readily admit what I don&#8217;t know, and am ready to learn and rely on Yahoo&#8217;s great team.&#8221;</p>
<p>While he would not go into deep specifics &#8212; Thompson does not start until next week &#8212; he said he planned to get some basic grounding, noting, &#8220;I have no preconceived notions.&#8221;</p>
<p>One thing is clear, said Thompson: &#8220;I can assure you I am going to be completely different.&#8221;</p>
<p>If that means doing what Fisk did, that would certainly be a home run for Yahoo.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s the typically newsless time around Christmas and New Year&#8217;s, but for once there has actually been a lot going on at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Last week, the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s typically moribund board decided to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111223/yahoo-okays-proceeding-with-term-sheet-to-sell-stakes-back-to-asian-partners-while-also-hoping-to-keep-pe-firms-in-fray/">move ahead with negotiations</a> to sell part of its stake in China&#8217;s Alibaba Group, as well as all of its shares in Yahoo Japan.</p>
<p>While that is still not a done deal, it adds clarity to the Yahoo mishegas, as current leaders there seek to turn around the company&#8217;s lagging fortunes.</p>
<p>Now, as Yahoo continues to contemplate a pair of partial investment bids by private equity firms Silver Lake and TPG Capital into 2012, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111220/yahoo-intensifies-search-for-ceo-with-hulus-kilar-as-dream-unicorn-candidate/">more focus will be on the selection of a CEO candidate</a> to take over, sources said.</p>
<p>While I have floated some names that have been contemplated &#8212; such as Hulu CEO Jason Kilar, Juniper CEO Kevin Johnson, former aQuantive and Microsoft exec Brian McAndrews, and board member David Kenny &#8212; I have collected some more that seem to be getting the once-over and are being mentioned internally as well as externally.</p>
<p>Sources said that the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee at Yahoo, which is run by independent director Patti Hart, has been looking for someone with definite public company experience, as well as expertise in large-scale management.</p>
<p>As to talent, candidates seem to be either good at running big platforms, or deeply knowledgeable about advertising and media as well as technology.</p>
<p>Another important criteria, said sources: Someone who is &#8220;collaborative&#8221; and nonconfrontational. As in, not like the former and very pugnacious CEO Carol Bartz, who was fired in September.</p>
<p>Thus, here&#8217;s another trio of candidates to consider, while we wait &#8212; and who knows how long <em>that</em> will be given that the Asian activity could have tired out for a bit this usually slow-moving board:</p>

<p><strong>Chris Liddell</strong>: The former CFO of Microsoft is an interesting name that just popped up recently, and it makes some sense when you think about the possible mindset of the Yahoo board.</p>
<p>Liddell, who has a charming New Zealand accent, did a short stint, from January of 2010 to March of this year, as CFO at General Motors. Recently married to another former Microsoft exec, he has since been living in New York.</p>
<p>He apparently loves living in the Big Apple.</p>
<p>But when he left GM, Liddell made it clear he wanted to go for a top job next. He was among the candidates for a recent search for a CEO of Time Warner&#8217;s Time Inc. (an effort that was run by exec search firm Heidrick &#038; Struggles, which is also conducting the Yahoo hunt).</p>
<p>Known as tough and decisive, he certainly is qualified to deal with complex financial situations, such as the one in which Yahoo now finds itself knee-deep. One knock: Little product or advertising experience.</p>

<p><strong>Laura Desmond</strong>: While certainly a dark horse, Desmond has been queried by Heidrick, said several sources. </p>
<p>She is CEO of Starcom MediaVest Group, a subsidiary of Publicis, one of the largest media planning and buying agencies, making Desmond one of advertising&#8217;s most prominent players.</p>
<p>Well-known in Yahoo&#8217;s key market, she is considered a savvy and smart exec with a wry sense of humor.</p>
<p>I happen to particularly like one line from one of her bios: </p>
<p>&#8220;Ms. Desmond&#8217;s career has been driven by two caveats: Take intelligent risks and learn more from failure than from success.&#8221;</p>
<p>She could learn a lot at Yahoo. (I know, easy jab, but it works!)</p>

<p><strong>David Rosenblatt</strong>: The former DoubleClick CEO, who went on to a big ad job at Google after it paid $3.2 billion for the company, is also a long shot, mostly by his own choosing.</p>
<p>The sharp exec is always on the short list of CEO candidates for a lot of big, splashy online jobs, but he seems to want to swim his own way.</p>
<p>Case in point: He was recently named <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111103/dibs-obscure-tech-company-nabs-former-doubleclick-ceo-david-rosenblatt/">CEO of New York-based 1stdibs</a>, a relatively obscure online marketplace known among antique dealers and interior designers looking for one-of-a-kind furniture, art and lighting.</p>
<p>Yes, that&#8217;s right: Fancy lamps.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt also serves on the boards at Group Commerce, Twitter and IAC.</p>
<p>All that Internet ad and e-commerce experience is exactly why Rosenblatt would be one of the better choices for CEO of Yahoo. But, for him, I would guess taking such a job is probably in the life&#8217;s-too-short category.</p>

<p>Maybe get something cooking in the whole what-will-Yahoo-do stakes, now that one of Yahoo&#8217;s more active board members is back.</p>
<p>And by &#8220;back,&#8221; I mean that Kenny &#8212; no longer a candidate for CEO &#8212; has no further need to recuse himself from the strategic process in which the Silicon Valley Internet company finds itself.</p>
<p>In an interview with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111101/no-yahoo-ceo-job-for-me-says-yahoo-board-member-david-kenny/">Advertising Age</a> last week, Kenny &#8212; the well-regarded online ad exec who recently stepped down as president of network infrastructure giant Akamai &#8212; released an unusual statement:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>As a matter of policy, I do not comment on matters related to Yahoo as a Yahoo director. However, as a personal matter, I want to clarify that I believe Yahoo is a great company with enormous potential, but I am not &#8212; and will not be &#8212; a candidate for the CEO position. I look forward to my continued service on the Yahoo Board of Directors.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>By removing himself from the fray, that means, according to several sources, that Kenny will be diving back into sleeve-rolling duties at Yahoo, as one of its &#8212; how can I put this? &#8212; less <em>comatose</em> board members.</p>
<p>In fact &#8212; until he was sidelined by the obvious conflict of interest inherent in wanting to be CEO, while also directing the fate of Yahoo for shareholder value &#8212; Kenny had been deeply involved in a lot of the changes that had taken place of late, after a long period of board inaction.</p>
<p>That included the ouster of CEO Carol Bartz, who was fired for a number of reasons, including lack of strategic vision. It was relatively new board member Kenny &#8212; he became a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110204/exclusive-huffpos-eric-hippeau-stepping-down-from-yahoo-board-as-akamais-david-kenny-steps-in/">director in February</a> &#8212; who led the strategy committee that had asked Bartz for her road map, which she did not deliver to their liking. Obviously.</p>
<p>Because of the swirl around his possible CEO candidacy &#8212; Kenny was a noticeable inside candidate, since he is well known in the Internet advertising world for running and then selling Digitas to the Publicis Groupe for $1.3 billion in 2006 &#8212; he gave up leadership of the committee to Intuit President Brad Smith.</p>
<p>Sources said it is unlikely Kenny will get that top job back, but he remains a member of the transactions committee, which is leading the strategic review of the company.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the key slot for the independent board members of Yahoo, who must ultimately be the ones to determine what path or offer the company will take.  </p>
<p>One plus: Kenny has close relationships with most of the bidders &#8212; largely private equity firms &#8212; looking at Yahoo, and also is well known among the media and tech companies poking around, too. He also has advertising &#8212; and now tech &#8212; experience, which will be much needed as Yahoo explores its options.</p>
<p>Most importantly, Kenny is an independent director, which will be very important to the process going forward, especially since a lot of the spotlight has fallen on Yahoo co-founder and director Jerry Yang.</p>
<p>Yang &#8212; who has been a bit of a Yahoo lightning rod at times &#8212; has been involved in some of the meetings with those interested, along with interim CEO Tim Morse. The company recently noted that this was at the behest of the board.</p>
<p>While these were only informational meetings so far &#8212; and not negotiations, as some reports have surmised &#8212; Yang&#8217;s involvement will likely have to be more curtailed, at least publicly, especially if any of the deals include using his own large stake in Yahoo.</p>
<p>&#8220;This process has to be above board, since it is so easy for those wanting a better deal to try to cause all kinds of trouble,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The company is already under attack in that regard.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a reference to a recent salvo by hedge fund activist Dan Loeb, a major Yahoo shareholder who has taken aim at the board and, last week, at Yang. Loeb <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111104/yahoos-activist-shareholder-loeb-now-targeting-jerry-yang/">essentially accused Yang of double-dealing</a> in the process.</p>
<p>Enter Kenny, along with Smith and &#8212; to an increasingly lesser extent, of late &#8212; Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock. While there are other independent board members involved, these are the three to watch most closely now.</p>
<p>While some think Kenny still would like to be CEO of Yahoo &#8212; he was also on the short list several years ago when Bartz was hired &#8212; sources said he is more likely to take a job at another consumer Internet company.</p>
<p>While he certainly could slot into a large advertising firm or into the digital division of a big media concern, sources said Kenny is looking to be a CEO. </p>
<p>Just not at Yahoo. </p>
<p>At least for now, since down the road it is unclear what will become of Yahoo and who will run it in years to come.</p>
<p>In fact, it might even be Kenny in the end.</p>

<p>Akamai president David Kenny has stepped down after a year on the job &#8212; and in the midst of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/?s=david+kenny">Yahoo&#8217;s CEO search</a>, where his name has come up as a possible <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110907/yahoos-next-ceo-maybe-snoop-dogg-ya-digg/">replacement for fired CEO Carol Bartz</a>.</p>
<p>Kenny is also a Yahoo board member &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110204/exclusive-huffpos-eric-hippeau-stepping-down-from-yahoo-board-as-akamais-david-kenny-steps-in/">joining early last year</a> &#8212; and had quickly become one of the major forces in pushing for change at the company in the wake of the troubled Bartz regime.</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://www.akamai.com/html/investor/quarterly_releases/2011/press_102611.html">statement</a> distributed along with Akamai&#8217;s Q3 earnings, Kenny said he wants to &#8220;to return to my first passion of pursuing emerging opportunities on the consumer Internet.&#8221; </p>
<p>You can decide for yourself whether Yahoo represents an &#8220;emerging&#8221; opportunity or something else.</p>
<p>Sources said the departure from the networking company was mutual, although there has been an increasing amount of tension over Kenny&#8217;s involvement on the Yahoo board, which has been working on a massive strategic review.</p>
<p>Kenny, who was the initial leader of the effort, stepped down from that board task and also recused himself from any involvement in the simultaneous search for a new CEO.</p>
<p>Whether he will get the job is not a done deal by any means. He is among several candidates Yahoo has been contemplating pursuing, after only recently <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111013/exlcusive-yahoo-hires-heidrick-struggles-for-ceo-search/">hiring Heidrick &#038; Struggles</a> for its executive search.</p>
<p>In fact, it&#8217;s not entirely clear Kenny wants to be CEO of Yahoo or if he would want to return to his roots at a consumer advertising agency. Another issue: He currently lives in Boston.</p>
<p>Before coming to Akamai, he was managing partner of VivaKi, the media and digital arm of marketing giant, Publicis Groupe. He came to the French concern after it bought relationship marketing services firm Digitas, which Kenny ran.</p>
<p>All that advertising experience is one of the reasons he is being looked at by Yahoo, which is contemplating doubling down in online advertising platforms and products if it does not sell.</p>
<p>Many assumed that Kenny&#8217;s move to the Web platform company meant that it would become more actively involved in Web media itself. But Akamai didn&#8217;t make any major moves or acquisitions during his tenure.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, back at Akamai, Kenny&#8217;s title will be assumed by CEO Paul Sagan, who had previously served as president as well.</p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Guilherme Ribenboim, VP and managing director of Latin America and U.S. Hispanic markets, has left Yahoo for another job at a start-up.</p>
<p>The 12-year Yahoo veteran, who is located in Brazil, is widely respected at the troubled Silicon Valley Internet giant and leads an area that is growing for it.</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATE:</strong> A Yahoo spokeswoman confirmed the departure of Ribenboim.]</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATE NO. 2:</strong> Also leaving: Connie Lee Schiefer, the well-regarded Yahoo veteran of more than eight years. She was VP of product management at Yahoo's cloud platform group.]</p>
<p>Sources said that attrition &#8212; already a big problem at Yahoo &#8212; is about to hit the company hard. While the board and its top leaders try to figure out a strategy &#8212; either a sale or <em>whatev</em> &#8212; in the wake of the firing of CEO Carol Bartz, Yahoo has yet to put in place a new plan to hold onto talent.</p>
<p>&#8220;The people walking out the door is about to become a flood, unless management acts,&#8221; said one employee in a common sentiment among people I have interviewed at Yahoo.</p>

<p>Today, Yahoo leaders &#8212; <em>all</em> of them in two different memos &#8212; took to the keyboards to fill their 14,000 employees in on what&#8217;s up.</p>
<p>Reading them, Yahoos must now be more confused than ever.</p>
<p>To summarize: Yahoo is for sale, sort of. But we&#8217;re taking it slow, because we always like to drag out the uncertainty here at Sunnyvale HQ. Hey, keep working hard and innovating, despite the still-matrixed system. But don&#8217;t fret that your job and career hang in the balance. And have a good weekend!</p>
<p>In the first email, Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock and co-founders David Filo and Jerry Yang &#8212; also a director &#8212; penned a rambling missive, which finally admitted the company was indeed, as was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110914/yahoo-for-sale-big-bidders-circling-including-marc-andreessen-as-board-pressure-mounts/">first reported here</a>, for sale.</p>
<p>Yahoo said hired-gun investment advisor, Allen &#038; Co., was &#8220;fielding inquiries from multiple parties that have already expressed interest in a number of potential options.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not to be a niggler, but didn&#8217;t <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110907/yang-says-not-for-sale-all-hands-on-yahoos-slippery-deck/">Yang tell the troops at an all-hands meeting</a> recently that Yahoo was <em>not</em> for sale?</p>
<p><em>Details!</em> Thus, said the memo, until the company sorts out all the offers just <em>pouring</em> in &#8212; not so much, but when you&#8217;re selling a house, you put on the dog &#8212; Yahoos had to keep working hard.</p>
<p>Therefore: &#8220;What Yahoo! needs to do better &#8212; and we&#8217;ve talked about this &#8212; is accelerate innovation, reignite inspiration, and give our users what they want now &#8212; great content that is engaging and easy-to-use on any device and provides an experience in which they can participate and contribute. Perhaps most importantly, we need to anticipate what they will want next.&#8221;</p>
<p>You&#8217;ve. Talked. About. This. You mean to try to make cool stuff like every other tech company &#8212; Apple, Facebook, Google &#8212; already does? Mind-blowing.</p>
<p>After a little throat-clearing on its fake search for a new permanent CEO and some media-bashing (yes, this all my fault!), the memo noted that all this fancy <em>strategery</em> is going to take &#8220;months, not weeks.&#8221;</p>
<p>(Is it just me or does it feel as though former <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110906/exclusive-carol-bartz-out-at-yahoo-cfo-interim-ceo/">CEO Carol Bartz was fired</a> a badillion years ago, instead of just weeks ago? Plus, I actually believe I officially now miss her kooky-but-genuine Friday staff emails.)</p>
<p>The Gang of Three email was followed by one from the incredible shrinking interim CEO Tim Morse, who said Yahoo was not in &#8220;limbo,&#8221; due to all this obvious limboness about the strategy.</p>
<p>&#8220;That means we will not be sitting still over the next few months,&#8221; Morse wrote. &#8220;We are actively making decisions and taking action.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, nothing to see here. Except everything.  </p>
<p>Oh, I give up &#8212; just read for yourselves:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Dear Yahoos:</p>
<p>In our recent all hands meeting, we talked about the Board&#8217;s strategic review to help return the Company to a path of robust growth and industry-leading innovation. While our teams are working to evaluate the many opportunities by which Yahoo! can continue building on our success, all kinds of people have been &#8212; and will continue &#8212; speculating in the media about where that work is headed, so we thought it best to provide you with some additional context directly from those of us who are closest to it. We don&#8217;t have specific news to share with you today, but we are committed to communicating with you directly from time to time &#8212; especially given the level of external swirl &#8212; so that you know where we are in the process. You can expect periodic updates from us and we encourage you to communicate with us as well.</p>
<p>At the heart of what we are doing is our belief that Yahoo!&#8217;s core strengths are not only relevant to where users are going today, but can serve as a foundation for the next phase of our company’s growth. Consider our strengths: we have 680 million users worldwide. We have nine of the #1 properties in the U.S., and we are a leader in display advertising. Our brand is iconic &#8212; we are not the only ones who bleed purple. By whatever measure you want to use &#8212; engagement, quality of products and services, our value to our advertisers &#8212; we all feel that we have what it takes to succeed. Also, our Asia assets remain one of our top priorities and we continue to work well with the teams there. As you may have seen, Alibaba Group has just announced a liquidity event for its employees that reflects a continued appreciation in its value, and therefore of the value of our stake.</p>
<p>What Yahoo! needs to do better &#8212; and we&#8217;ve talked about this &#8212; is accelerate innovation, reignite inspiration, and give our users what they want now &#8212; great content that is engaging and easy-to-use on any device and provides an experience in which they can participate and contribute. Perhaps most importantly, we need to anticipate what they will want next. That is the path to enhancing the value of Yahoo! for all of its stakeholders, including its users, customers, shareholders, partners and Yahoos everywhere. Our strategic review is designed to help us map out the best way to achieve that.</p>
<p>At this point, we cannot offer many specifics about the Board&#8217;s review; we&#8217;ve just gotten started. You should know that the entire Board and management team are fully aligned and unanimous in their views regarding the scope of this work. Allen &#038; Company was a logical choice to help us in this review, because they have been one of our advisers for some time, and this is familiar territory for them. Achieving success in our sector is intrinsic to what they do for a living, and they will be constructive partners.</p>
<p>Our advisers are working with us to develop ideas that we will pursue proactively. At the same time, they are fielding inquiries from multiple parties that have already expressed interest in a number of potential options. We will take the time we need to select and structure the best approach for the company, its shareholders and employees.</p>
<p>In addition, as we announced previously, the Board has commenced a search for a permanent Chief Executive Officer. That process also continues.</p>
<p>When we have updates that we can share we will do so. There will be plenty of rumors and speculation as different parties try to advance their agendas in the media &#8212; but it is important that we not be distracted by the rumors and speculation.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m sure by now you&#8217;ve all seen the note from Jerry, David and Roy. I want you to know that while the Board works through all of our options, CEO Staff and I have been charged to move the company forward. </p>
<p>That means we will not be sitting still over the next few months. We are actively making decisions and taking action.</p>
<p>In fact, for three days this week, CEO staff and I met to do just that. Our planning for 2012 is well underway, and we continue to execute on our current plans &#8212; such as our Social Chrome announcement this week. (I want to make sure to give a big shout out to the team behind it; it&#8217;s getting some great press.)</p>
<p>You see, the Board is confident we can execute our current game plan in the short term. We&#8217;ve done some truly great work on updating the foundation of Yahoo!, and we&#8217;ve got some good things in the immediate pipeline. So, the Board’s focus is where it should be &#8212; on our long-term outlook, and how we best position ourselves to be successful in 3-5 years.</p>
<p>We need a flexible, visionary plan. That&#8217;s why the Board is actively looking at all the options available to put Yahoo! on a strong trajectory. </p>
<p>That being said, while the Board makes this decision, it does not mean we are in limbo. We have to keep Yahoo! moving ahead. And to do that, there are three things I need Yahoos everywhere to focus on:</p>
<p>1.    Speed: Emphasize quick execution and decision-making</p>
<p>2.    Accountability: Do what you say you&#8217;re going to do &#8212; and take ownership for time to market, monetization, user engagement, quality, or whatever metric defines success for your team</p>
<p>3.    Purpose: Rally behind our mission and purpose: creating deeply personal digital experiences.</p>
<p>In the meantime, we will keep you updated as much as we can. And we will earn your trust &#8212; we know we have to.</p>

<p>In a blog it just posted, Groupon said its recently hired COO, Margo Georgiadis, &#8220;has decided to return to Google (her former employer) in a new role as President, Americas.&#8221;</p>
<p>She was only <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110421/its-official-groupon-has-hired-margo-georgiadis-as-coo/">hired in April</a>, just months before the company filed to go public. Georgiadis was previously VP of Global Sales at Google. </p>
<p>(Interesting way to get a better title at the search giant, Margo!)</p>
<p>Georgiadis was in charge of the company&#8217;s global sales, marketing and operations at the Chicago-based social buying service.</p>
<p>Sources said that the hiring did not gel on either side. </p>
<p>It might not be Georgiadis&#8217; fault. She replaced <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110322/exclusive-groupon-president-rob-solomon-steps-down/">Rob Solomon</a>, who was in his job for one year.</p>
<p>And here&#8217;s another: PR hire <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110608/exclusive-former-yahoo-brad-williams-take-over-as-pr-head-honcho-at-groupon/">Brad Williams</a>, a longtime Silicon Valley communications exec, who was there and then gone in what felt like 23 minutes.</p>
<p>It seems Groupon does not like Silicon Valley types or, perhaps, vice versa.</p>
<p>Since its IPO filing, in fact, it feels as if it has been a non-stop circus disaster at Groupon.</p>
<p>That has included immense controversy about its sketchy accounting, huge slugs of venture funding going to its founders and a lot of worries about its growth.  </p>
<p>Today, in a Friday late afternoon dumping of bad news in hopes that no one notices (I <em>do</em>), Groupon also <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110923/more-groupon-amends-its-s-1-ipo-filing-again-over-accounting-issues/">amended its S-1 public offering filing</a> once again to change revenue metrics and also add a controversial internal letter that CEO and co-founder Andrew Mason sent to employees to counter its many and growing critics.</p>
<p>There appear to be many more shoes dropping soon, said sources, so stay tuned.</p>

<p>Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman is being considered by Hewlett-Packard directors as a possible candidate for CEO, in a move that would replace its current leader Léo Apotheker, according to several sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>The appointment of Whitman &#8212; a longtime and experienced Silicon Valley exec, who joined the board of Hewlett-Packard in January &#8212; to the top job at HP is by no means a done deal, sources said.</p>
<p>But a significant contingent on the board is keen to remove Apotheker after what some directors consider a series of management mishaps.</p>
<p>If it occurs, it would be the second major CEO ouster in a short time &#8212; Yahoo <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110916/what-was-behind-the-timing-of-yahoo-ceo-carol-bartzs-abrupt-ouster/">recently fired its CEO Carol Bartz due to lackluster performance</a>.</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATE:</strong> Wall Street seems to like the Apotheker-gone idea, with HP shares spiking almost eight percent on our news, as well as a simultaneous <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-09-21/hp-s-board-is-said-to-weigh-ousting-apotheker-after-less-than-year-as-ceo.html">Bloomberg report</a>. The rise has added almost $3 billion to HP's market valuation.]</p>
<p>In addition, sources said Whitman has been contemplating taking another big exec job, after a 10-year stint at eBay, which was followed by an unsuccessful run as the Republican nominee for governor of California last year. Since then, she has been a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110329/meg-whitman-joins-kleiner-perkins-to-try-hand-at-advising-start-ups/">part-time consultant</a> at top venture firm Kleiner Perkins.</p>
<p>Her role there &#8212; which has largely been seen as a temporary one &#8212; has included acting as a strategic adviser to start-ups and evaluating investment opportunities.</p>
<p>Sources said Whitman &#8212; who has also been active with her family foundation &#8212; has shown some interest in talking about taking the HP job. </p>
<p>Turning to Whitman would not be a surprise, given there are few execs in tech experienced enough to run such a large and complex organization as HP. </p>
<p>Still, her expertise has mostly been in the consumer space and she has never run what is largely a hardware company and one with major enterprise clients.</p>
<p>So, if appointed, Whitman would need a lot of help, especially to fix one with as many troubles as HP has seen of late. </p>
<p>That is why the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110921/hp-board-meets-after-palm-turmoil-so-whats-the-next-shoe-to-drop/">board has been meeting by phone and in person</a> this week to talk about a range of issues, focused in part on how to spin the company out of its current cycle of bad news and what to do about the situation.</p>
<p>Its most recent spate of trouble was the announcement of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110919/layoffs-at-hps-palm-division/">layoffs of hundreds of employees in its Palm division</a>.</p>
<p>This inevitable move to jettison Palm employees came after HP&#8217;s sudden news in August that it was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110818/breaking-hp-makes-big-shift-on-webos-exiting-hardware-business/">shuttering its webOS hardware business</a>.</p>
<p>Add to that a proposed class action lawsuit, filed Sept. 13 in the U.S. District Court for Central California, along with another handful of law firms that are launching their own investigations of HP over the move.</p>
<p>In the suit, according to a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110916/the-number-of-securities-lawyers-circling-hp-is-growing/">report by Arik Hesseldahl</a>, an &#8220;HP shareholder named Richard Gammel alleged that comments by CEO Léo Apotheker &#8212; concerning the company&#8217;s earnings expectations, the importance of its personal computer business and plans to move ahead with devices running the webOS operating system &#8212; gave a vastly different indication of actions HP took on Aug. 18, when it killed the webOS hardware business and announced plans to spin off the PC business and spend $10 billion to acquire Autonomy.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, lots to discuss for HP&#8217;s directors, who have been under siege, essentially, ever since the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100806/hp-ceo-resigns/">former CEO Mark Hurd</a> resigned under pressure more than a year ago over a variety of allegations about expense reports related to a sexual harassment inquiry. The board found no evidence to support the sexual harassment claim. </p>
<p>In the wake of that scandal, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100930/hp-names-new-ceo-leo-apotheker/">HP appointed Apotheker to take over for Hurd</a>.</p>
<p>It has been a bumpy ride, as HP&#8217;s stock has plummeted almost 43 percent in a year&#8217;s time. By comparison, rival Oracle&#8217;s shares are up more than three percent in the same period, and Apple stock has risen more than 50 percent.</p>
<p>That share decline, given a series of major moves and just as many gaffes, has put Apotheker &#8212; who has been trying to reposition HP largely as an enterprise company &#8212; in the hot seat.</p>
<p>An HP spokeswoman declined to comment. I have several calls in to reach Whitman and have not yet heard back.</p>

<p>One of the best lines I ever heard from Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg &#8212; who has been very <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110518/facebooks-sheryl-sandberg-on-women-in-workplace-dont-leave-before-you-leave/">vocal about casting light on women&#8217;s challenges</a> in the workplace &#8212; was about her service on the Disney board. </p>
<p>Discussing the depiction of its happy-ending female animated characters, she joked to me that what she always pushed for at meetings were &#8220;princesses <em>with jobs</em>.&#8221; </p>
<p>Sandberg seems to have gotten her wish now, with this upcoming movie from Disney unit Pixar, &#8220;Brave.&#8221;</p>
<p>Incredibly, it&#8217;s the first time in its dozen films that Pixar has a female hero at its center. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s about a red-headed Scottish princess named Merida, who insists on being a warrior &#8212; complete with rocking bow and arrow. </p>

<p>According to an internal memo from Juniper Networks, which you can see below, one of its top tech execs, David Yen (pictured here), is departing immediately.</p>
<p>Sources said Yen is headed to Cisco to run its servers business, but the networking giant has not returned a request for comment.</p>
<p>Yen had most recently been EVP and GM of Juniper&#8217;s fabric and switching technologies unit. He joined Juniper in 2008 as EVP of emerging technologies.</p>
<p>But Yen was better known for his previous 20-year stint at Sun Microsystems. His last job there was running its chip division.</p>
<p>The impetus for Yen&#8217;s departure might have been the formation of the Platform Systems Group, run by Stefan Dyckerhoff, which is prominently mentioned in the memo from Juniper CEO Kevin Johnson. Dyckerhoff was elevated to the job in late January.</p>
<p>Sources said Yen did not get that job and was unhappy with the move.</p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Yahoo has grabbed one of Huffington Post&#8217;s top editors, Jai Singh, to become its editor-in chief.</p>
<p>The move is a big one in the online editorial arena. Before <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090428/arianna-huffington-talks-about-new-managing-editor-singh">moving to the HuffPo as managing editor in 2009</a>, which is now the key content unit of AOL, Singh ran CNET Networks.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Yahoo confirmed the hiring in a press release below.</p>
<p>A Huffington Post spokesman said:</p>
<p>&#8220;This is about geography&#8211;Jai made clear his desire to move back to California, where his family is located. He moved from California to work with us and, unfortunately, this job requires his being in the newsroom in New York. We loved working with him, wish him well with his new job, and look forward to staying in touch.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sources said Yahoo sent out an internal memo earlier tonight outlining the move, which is a whole new role at Yahoo. It&#8217;s below&#8211;<em>natch!</em>&#8211;from Yahoo Media head Mickie Rosen.</p>

<p>A Google spokesman confirmed the move by Georgiadis, while Groupon&#8211;which specifically denied a query about her appointment that BoomTown made Tuesday&#8211;dithered.</p>
<p>In a statement, her boss, SVP and Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora said:</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m grateful for all that Margo has done for our team over the past two years. We will miss her, but we&#8217;re also very excited that she&#8217;s joining a terrific company and a great partner for Google.&#8221;</p>
<p>Besides COO, I will officially bestow the title of &#8220;Chief Cat Wrangler&#8221; on Georgiadis, for the massive organizational job ahead for her at the notoriously chaotic start-up. (As evidenced by <em>Google</em> being the company confirming a major Groupon hire.)</p>
<p>Still, Groupon&#8217;s growth had been stunning. It now has thousands of employees and has already washed out one COO, former Yahoo exec Rob Solomon, whose <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110322/exclusive-groupon-president-rob-solomon-steps-down/">departure was reported here</a>.</p>
<p>It has also turned down a $6 billion acquisition offer from Google, raised a badillion dollars in venture funding from tech&#8217;s top investors and also is prepping an IPO valuing the company at upwards of $15 billion.</p>
<p><em>Phew!</em></p>
<p>Georgiadis must bring calm to this perfect storm.</p>
<p>Because of her solid resume (see below) and quiet demeanor, I had <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110329/wanted-groupon-coo-must-like-cat-wrangling-lack-of-spotlight-and-international-travel-post-samwer/">included her in a list of candidates</a> several weeks ago and had queried the social buying company about her specifically this week.</p>
<p>In fact, when I asked for a comment if Georgiadis was hired on Tuesday, a Groupon spokeswoman said: &#8220;This would be news to me. Nothing to announce yet.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the time, Google had the class to simply say &#8220;no comment.&#8221;</p>

<p><a href="http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20110421/NEWS08/110429964/groupon-hires-coo-from-google">Crain&#8217;s Chicago Business&#8217; John Pletz</a> first posted on Georgiadis&#8217; hiring earlier today.</p>
<p>In any case, Georgiadis is just the kind of candidate that Groupon has been looking for&#8211;a competent and experienced sales and operations exec who would not overshadow its quirky CEO and co-founder Andrew Mason.</p>
<p>As I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110329/wanted-groupon-coo-must-like-cat-wrangling-lack-of-spotlight-and-international-travel-post-samwer/">wrote two weeks ago</a>:</p>
<blockquote classs="memo"><p>Lastly, and perhaps most important, the Groupon COO candidate is going to have to accept that the role will not be a CEO-in-waiting, either before or after its inevitable IPO in the next year.</p>
<p>While I have received several tips that co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason might not stay its principal exec, extensive checking with sources inside and outside the company indicate that such a move is highly unlikely.</p>
<p>&#8220;Andrew is beloved to the board, by investors and, most of all, by employees,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;He&#8217;s not going anywhere.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, Mason has a close working relationship with co-founder Brad Keywell, as well as Groupon co-founder and Chairman Eric Lefkofsky.</p>
<p>In fact, despite other business interests, Lefkofsky has been very involved in all key decisions with Mason.</p>
<p>That job, presumably, would fall to the new COO, which Groupon should be hiring sooner rather than later.</p>
<p>&#8220;Groupon needs a world-class COO, who can manage hyper-growth, but also who knows that a No. 2 stays in the background while doing it,&#8221; said another source. &#8220;That&#8217;s a tall order.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Groupon has looked at a number of top execs, most specificially at former DoubleClick and Google exec David Rosenblatt. Sources said the high-profile exec did not want to play second fiddle to Mason or move to Chicago.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s moot now. Here is Georgiadis&#8217; bio at the Silicon Valley search giant, which shows why Groupon picked her:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Georgiadis is responsible for driving Google&#8217;s sales operations and strategies across regions, channels and products as well as leading the sales technology teams which enable the successful commercialization of Google’s products (e.g., AdWords, AdSense, display and mobile ads) with advertisers and publishers.</p>
<p>She also leads the company&#8217;s local and commerce businesses, working to extend services like Checkout, Google Places and commerce search to small and large businesses alike.</p>
<p>Before joining Google, Margo was a principal in Synetro Capital LLC, a private investment firm based in Chicago. She also spent five years as the executive vice president of card products and chief marketing officer of Discover Financial Services where she led a radical turnaround of business performance and revitalized its rewards leadership with award-winning new products, customer experience and marketing. Prior to Discover, Margo was a partner at McKinsey and Company for 15 years in London and Chicago. She was a leader in the firm’s marketing and retail practices, and also co-founded and led the customer acquisition and management and retail marketing practices.</p>
<p>She has a bachelor&#8217;s degree in economics from Harvard College and an MBA from Harvard Business School.</p></blockquote>

<p>Greg Coleman, the online advertising sales exec who keeps making bank after bouncing from top Web jobs, has a new one.</p>
<p>The former Yahoo, AOL and Huffington Post sales leader has just taken over as president of Criteo, a &#8220;personalized retargeting&#8221; company&#8211;essentially, it delivers highly targeted ads to consumers.</p>
<p>Coleman said in an interview with BoomTown last night that he will be focused on expanding Criteo&#8217;s U.S. business.</p>
<p>&#8220;Performance advertising is a huge opportunity in a high-growth arena,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t pass it up.&#8221;</p>
<p>While the 300-person company has offices in Silicon Valley and New York, its HQ is in Paris.</p>

<p>So, Coleman (pictured here)&#8211;who has grabbed huge sums of exit cash, first when AOL management changed and then when AOL bought the HuffPo&#8211;now gets to visit the City of Lights all the time.</p>
<p><em>Zut alors!</em> As I have previously written, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110207/boomtown-will-have-what-greg-colemans-having-huffpo-ad-sales-head-scores-big-bucks-twice-from-aols-armstrong/">I&#8217;ll have what Coleman&#8217;s having.</a></p>
<p>Toby Coppel, an investor in Criteo who is also on its board, worked with Coleman at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Criteo has raised almost $24 million from Coppel and other investors such as Bessemer Venture Partners and Index Ventures.</p>
<p>Its competitors are other start-ups, such as MyThings.</p>

<p>While Facebook should not be expecting big bouquets of love from its partner and investor Microsoft, at least it&#8217;s not going to be getting <a href="https://kara.allthingsd.com/20110302/exclusive-microsoft-mulls-legally-poking-facebook-over-ad-talent-raid">legal brickbats</a> either.</p>
<p>According to sources close to the situation, the pair have settled a dispute over the Silicon Valley social networking site&#8217;s talent raid of Microsoft&#8217;s head of global ad sales, Carolyn Everson, for a similar job at Facebook.</p>
<p>In fact, Everson has already been at work for a week, sources said, after she agreed not to solicit a small group of advertising clients for a short period of time.</p>
<p>She is also barred from using any strategic information in her new Facebook job that she obtained while at Microsoft, sources said.</p>
<p>This kind of agreement is not uncommon in disputed job shifts and is also a far cry from a more stringent legal outcome, which might have benched her completely for some time.</p>
<p>But Everson is a veteran ad exec, having previously worked at Viacom&#8217;s MTV Networks. Thus, Microsoft could not have barred her from calling on advertisers she had known previous to her short employment there.</p>

<p>Still, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110215/exclusive-facebook-grabs-microsoft-ad-head-everson/">February hiring</a> by Facebook came as a surprise to many at Microsoft, especially since Everson (pictured here) <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100603/microsoft-u-s-ad-sales-vp-domeniconi-to-depart-while-exec-from-mtv-arrives-to-run-global-online-sales/">had been hired</a> only last June, after a long search. In that time, she had become a high-profile presence at internal and external Microsoft events.</p>
<p>So, it&#8217;s clear the Everson hiring infuriated Microsoft execs, especially since the company regards Facebook as a close partner. Microsoft is a longtime investor too.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re no longer angry,&#8221; said one source at Microsoft, about the cooling of tensions, &#8220;as much as disappointed.&#8221;</p>
<p>But key in the weighing of options at Microsoft is the obvious importance of keeping up good relations with Facebook. It is an important partnership, especially for its Bing search business, especially as an advantage over Google.</p>

<p>Well, Wayn must have liked what he saw at the Silicon Valley Internet giant, since he is bouncing there from his job at the Redmond, Wash. software giant to help run local efforts at Yahoo.</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATING</strong> local roles at Yahoo.]</p>
<p>Wayn will be working for Chief Product Officer Blake Irving  and will be responsible for product management of Yahoo&#8217;s local &#8220;horizontal.&#8221;</p>
<p>He will work closely with whoever Yahoo finds as a replacement for <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110315/after-ad-changes-yahoo-media-unit-gets-a-management-shakeup/">Matt Idema</a>, a longtime Yahoo exec who shuttled over to Facebook as a director of business operations, working on the local arena.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110315/after-ad-changes-yahoo-media-unit-gets-a-management-shakeup/">Luke Beatty</a>, who heads up Yahoo&#8217;s Americas region community and local businesses, including Flickr, Groups, Answers and hundreds of local sites, is doing Idema&#8217;s job for now within Americas head Ross Levinsohn&#8217;s unit.</p>
<p>Local is a hugely hot space right now, with a spate of Web focus from giants like Google and Facebook to powerful start-ups such as Foursquare and Groupon.</p>
<p>Wayn has more recently been working on international for Microsoft&#8217;s MSN portal. The Australian native has also worked at AOL and, interestingly, has an actual medical degree.</p>
<p>In other words: <em>Paging Dr. Local, stat!</em></p>

<p>Of all the many job openings in tech, perhaps the most interesting to watch will be who Groupon selects as its next COO.</p>
<p>The search has been on for a while for the critical hire for the Chicago-based social buying company, well before the recent announcement that it was parting ways with President and COO Rob Solomon.</p>
<p>Among those approached, said sources close to Groupon: Former Doubleclick and Google exec David Rosenblatt.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s not taking the job for a variety of reasons, sources said, but<br />
finding someone to step up for the job will be tough, since it is likely to be one that will require a wide range of talents.</p>
<p>That includes: epic cat-wrangling of thousands of employees in far-flung locations; deep marketing and advertising prowess; high-level technology, product, mobile and e-commerce chops; and international experience.</p>
<p>The last is perhaps the most critical of all, since global growth&#8211;especially in Europe and Asia&#8211;is increasingly becoming Groupon&#8217;s main revenue driver, and the COO will have to pull together a crack team across the world.</p>
<p>That will become even more important after Groupon&#8217;s top international managers&#8211;Germany&#8217;s entrepreneurial Samwer brothers&#8211;move out of active management by the end of this year.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/samwer.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/samwer.jpeg" alt="" title="samwer" width="255" height="128" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-42119" /></a></p>
<p>While company sources said this has been long planned, the Samwers (pictured here) have been fully involved in Groupon&#8217;s fast trajectory in Europe and elsewhere, since it <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100517/shopping-site-groupon-buys-germanys-citydeal">bought their Citydeal discounting clone last May</a>.</p>
<p>Thus, sources said, Groupon is looking at a range of candidates with experience abroad, as well as talent in scaling businesses quickly and to huge size.</p>
<p>And that means looking to companies such as Google and Amazon for an exec, where there are quite a few choices.</p>
<p>While BoomTown could not confirm whether Groupon has spoken to any of them, possible COO types are obvious.</p>
<p>At Amazon, some qualified execs include: Sebastian J. Gunningham, SVP of Seller Services; Diego Piacentini, SVP of International Retail; H. Brian Valentine, SVP of Ecommerce Platform; and Jeffrey A. Wilke, SVP of North America Retail.</p>
<p>At Google, there are tons of good candidates that Facebook has not yet raided, including: Stephanie Tilenius, VP of eCommerce; Henrique de Castro, VP of Media and Global Platforms; Dennis Woodside, VP of Americas Operations; and Margo Georgiadis, VP of Global Sales Operations (plus a Chicagoan!).</p>
<p>Other names being raised include Hulu&#8217;s Jason Kilar (unlikely, but I&#8217;d like it), various Microsoft execs and a spate of others.</p>
<p>(I say, let&#8217;s bring in Zynga&#8217;s Owen Van Natta, who was once COO of Facebook, since he&#8217;s missing a big pile of Groupon stock to add to his enviable collection of hot Web 2.0 company shares.)</p>
<p>While there are probably qualified execs outside the tech industry at retail and media outfits, sources said it is likely Groupon will select within the digital ranks.</p>
<p>Lastly, and perhaps most important, the Groupon COO candidate is going to have to accept that the role will not be a CEO-in-waiting, either before or after its inevitable IPO in the next year.</p>

<p>While I have received several tips that Co-founder and CEO Andrew Mason (pictured here) might not stay its principal exec, extensive checking with sources inside and outside the company indicate that such a move is highly unlikely.</p>
<p>&#8220;Andrew is beloved to the board, by investors and, most of all, by employees,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;He&#8217;s not going anywhere.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, Mason has a close working relationship with Co-founder Brad Keywell, as well as Groupon Co-founder and Chairman Eric Lefkofsky.</p>
<p>In fact, despite other business interests, Lefkofsky has been very involved in all key decisions with Mason.</p>
<p>That job, presumably, would fall to the new COO, which Groupon should be hiring sooner rather than later.</p>
<p>&#8220;Groupon needs a world-class COO, who can manage hyper-growth, but also who knows that a No. 2 stays in the background while doing it,&#8221; said another source. &#8220;That&#8217;s a tall order.&#8221;</p>

<p>There&#8217;s no question it&#8217;s a jarring contrast&#8211;layoffs versus champagne and cookies.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s the reality at AOL as its acquisition of the Huffington Post closes this week, even as it sheds employees as part of its ongoing turnaround effort.</p>
<p>Sources said the New York-based Internet portal could announce layoffs as early as today.</p>
<p>[UPDATE: Layoffs will not come until after the Huffington Post deal is closed said other sources, although they are coming.]</p>
<p>AOL CEO Tim Armstrong indicated job cuts were definitely coming at a paidContent conference in New York yesterday.</p>
<p>&#8220;There will be job changes,&#8221; he said, when asked about layoffs.</p>
<p>Perhaps sooner than later.</p>
<p>BoomTown received several emails from worried AOL employees, noting that human resources staffers were taking steps to initiate the layoffs at 10 am ET/7 am PT this morning and that there would also be employee meetings then too.</p>
<p>I followed up with several sources close to the situation, who confirmed that the layoffs are imminent. Nonetheless, they could not specify the timing, size and scope of them.</p>
<p>[UPDATE: There will be an all-hands meeting for AOL staff with Armstrong, as well as new content head Arianna Huffington.]</p>
<p>The last time AOL laid off employees a year ago, it was a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100111/aol-begins-firing-employees-who-wouldnt-leave">large action with job cuts of 2,300</a>.</p>
<p>The latest slashing comes just as AOL management will try to aggressively tout the closing of its $315 million purchase of the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>The integration of the well-known news and opinion site will mean a significant change for AOL&#8217;s editorial efforts, as well as an opportunity to impress advertisers.</p>
<p>Thus, AOL is prepping boxes with Greek cookies and pricey champagne to send out to key advertising clients, to celebrate the deal&#8217;s close.</p>
<p>Why Greek cookies? Because it&#8217;s the original country of Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>I have emails into AOL for a comment.</p>

<p>Microsoft&#8211;furious over a recent talent grab of its top advertising exec by Facebook&#8211;has been considering a wide range of options, including legal action to block the move, according to sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>Lawyer at both companies have been in back-and-forth talks in recent days after the hiring of Microsoft&#8217;s global ad sales head Carolyn Everson by the Silicon Valley social networking powerhouse to be its VP of global sales.</p>
<p>Among the more likely solutions being discussed: Barring Everson&#8211;a longtime ad sales exec who came to Microsoft from MTV Networks&#8211;from using any strategic information she learned at the company and also from contacting certain ad clients on behalf of Facebook for a certain period of time.</p>
<p>While a legal action to stop her from actually taking the position is the most serious option, it is certainly not without precedent for Microsoft. The company recently <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110223/judge-says-former-microsoft-exec-cant-work-for-salesforce-for-now/">got a temporary restraining order</a> to block one of its top government relations execs, Matt Miszewski, from working at Salesforce.com, pointing to non-compete and confidentiality contracts.</p>
<p>Whatever happens, it is clear the Everson hiring has infuriated Microsoft execs, especially CEO Steve Ballmer, since the company regards Facebook as a close partner. Microsoft is also a longtime investor in Facebook.</p>
<p>While considering a temporary restraining order against Everson in this kind of situation&#8211;since it is essentially the same job&#8211;is standard operating procedure for any company, several sources said tensions are higher than usual.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is just tone deaf on Facebook&#8217;s part not to think this would not be a problem,&#8221; said one person.</p>
<p>One particularly irksome aspect&#8211;top Facebook execs did not call Ballmer before news of the appointment leaked out to assuage the situation.</p>
<p>Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg did release a statement when <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110215/exclusive-facebook-grabs-microsoft-ad-head-everson">BoomTown broke news of the move</a> in mid-February, in an attempt to make nice.</p>
<p>&#8220;Microsoft was one of our earliest partners and is still one of our most valued,&#8221; she said, in part. &#8220;We look forward to continuing to expand our relationship with them.&#8221;</p>
<p>Her dulcet words have apparently not worked.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/clip_image002.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/clip_image002.jpeg" alt="" title="clip_image002" width="171" height="212" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-41229" /></a></p>
<p>In fact, the talent raid came as a surprise to many at Microsoft, especially since Everson (pictured here) had been hired in June after a long search and had become a high-profile presence at internal and external Microsoft events.</p>
<p>That included organizing the splashy &#8220;Imagine 2011, Microsoft Advertising&#8217;s Marketing Leadership Summit.&#8221; The event is set to take place at the end of March at the software giant&#8217;s Redmond, Wa. HQ and will include an evening concert by the band Train.</p>
<p>Now she will be doing such things for Facebook, where Everson will be replacing longtime and well-regarded ad exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101026/exclusive-facebooks-longtime-ad-sales-head-mike-murphy-to-depart-company/">Mike Murphy</a>, who left the Palo Alto, Calif., company last fall. She will report to former Googler David Fischer, VP of Advertising and Global Operations.</p>
<p>Having a top exec who is amenable to and well known by Madison Avenue is key for Facebook as it ramps up its business, in anticipation of an IPO next year.</p>
<p>Despite being private, Facebook has recently been valued at between $50 and $60 billion by investors, who have been eagerly buying up shares of the company on secondary markets.</p>
<p>Under Murphy and Fischer, ad sales have been doing well already. Facebook&#8217;s share of online display advertising has more than quadrupled, from about three percent to almost 14 percent of the nearly $9 billion U.S. market, according to a recent survey.</p>
<p>In growing so quickly, Facebook has grabbed ad revenue&#8211;reportedly $2 billion last year–from old online powerhouses, especially Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL, and is also in a big fight with Google over premium ad sales.</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s surging usage and engagement are the reasons for the increased interest from advertisers, as well as its global growth in both market share and mindshare of consumers.</p>
<p>The opportunity at Facebook is clearly a big&#8211;and probably irresistible&#8211;move for the dynamic Everson, who has mostly worked in the mainstream media for much of her career.</p>
<p>Still, while movement of execs among top tech companies is not uncommon, there has been a lot less from Microsoft to Facebook.</p>
<p>Instead, Facebook has been most aggressive in its efforts to attract talent from Google.</p>

<p>No longer. In fact, the week before Facebook grabbed Everson, it also hired an up-and-coming exec, <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/chris-daniels/0/a2/17a">Chris Daniels</a>, GM of Bing Mobile Product Management, to be its director of business development.</p>
<p>Still, there is some hiring war history between the companies. In late 2008, Microsoft&#8217;s Ballmer managed to <a href="https://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/microsoft-confirms-qi-lu-hired-as-digital-chief-mcandrews-out">lure former Yahoo exec Qi Lu</a> to run its Online Services Division, several sources at both companies said, after he had told Facebook he would work there as its engineering lead. Lu had also been heavily recruited by Google.</p>
<p>Eventually, that was water under the bridge, which is what Facebook is hoping will happen with Microsoft over Everson.</p>
<p>Also important in the weighing of options at Microsoft is the obvious importance of keeping up good relations with Facebook. It is an important partnership, especially for its Bing search business, as an advantage over Google.</p>
<p>&#8220;Everyone is hoping to resolve this amicably,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;There has been some damage to the relationship for sure, but the question is whether Microsoft wants to do something that would escalate that damage.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, both Facebook and Microsoft declined to comment on the fracas.</p>

<p>As AOL CEO Tim Armstrong works to integrate his $315 million purchase of the Huffington Post into the Internet portal, one of its top advertising leaders is departing for a big job at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Mark Ellis will become head of the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s North American field sales, afterhttp://kara.allthingsd.com/wp-admin/my-sites.php <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090408/ellis-gets-sales-promotion-at-aols-platform-a/">serving in a wide variety of jobs at AOL</a> and being a key lieutenant to global ad sales head Jeff Levick.</p>
<p>Previous to AOL, Ellis worked at sports marketing company IMG, at Quokka Sports, a sports Web site and at Time Inc. as publisher of Time Inc. New Media.</p>
<p>While there, he worked with Yahoo&#8217;s current U.S. ad sales head Wayne Powers.</p>
<p>While <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110301/another-aol-shuffle-this-time-in-ad-sales/">AOL portrayed the move as a well-planned reorganization</a> in an internal memo, the departure of Ellis was a new wrinkle, as Armstrong has been contemplating how to best rejigger its key ad business after the bold acquisition of the news and opinion site run by its famous editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington.</p>
<p>Several sources said Armstrong found out a week ago about Yahoo&#8217;s interest in hiring Ellis, whom Yahoo had been pursing Ellis for far longer. Interestingly, he has been involved in the planning for the changes as the deal to buy the Huffington Post wraps up.</p>
<p>Sources said that deal is expected to close as soon as a week.</p>
<p>Previous to the Huffington Post situation, sources at AOL said the New York-based company has been contemplating a variety of changes, including Ellis&#8217; role, in the ad department as its sales have continued to suffer.</p>
<p>Whatever the circumstances, an experienced ad sales exec like Ellis moving to a major AOL competitor is <em>certainly</em> a change.</p>
<p>Here is Levick&#8217;s staff memo on the changes in AOL&#8217;s ad unit, with the Ellis move buried low and with no mention of Yahoo (<em>natch!</em>):</p>

<p>One year ago this week, we decided to innovate the future of brand advertising for the digital world. Last night, our work was recognized by the industry in a meaningful and significant way. The race is on for the next phase of advertising on the Internet and we are in that race. We have more to do, but we&#8217;re going to do it and do it quickly.</p>
<p>Today, we also wanted to announce a set of changes that will allow us to expand and accelerate our ability to serve our customers on a deeper level.  We now have a great suite of products to match our talented team. We also have an expanding base of consumers on some of the best brands on the Internet and that represents a very attractive proposition for our customers. The addition of The Huffington Post adds an incredibly talented team of sales people and journalists to our team and we have the ability to scale all aspects of our business.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m very happy to announce that over the next 90 days, we will be integrating The Huffington Post sellers into our regional teams and expanding the roles of three of our star field generals&#8211;Tim Richards, Wendy McGregor, and Tim Castelli.  Wendy, Tim, and Tim will lead the sales for AOL and Huffington Post Media Group and report directly to me, moving them into a more central role in AOL&#8217;s revenue strategies and management.</p>
<p>Jim Norton will continue to lead the Advance Sales team but will also be taking on a new role as the VP of Product Sales, reporting into me. In this role, he will help realize the potential with Mail, AIM, Local, AOL.com and other core product solutions for National and Advance advertisers, serving as a critical &#8216;linchpin&#8217; that connects our advertiser opportunities with AOL solutions. Christa Zambardino will continue to lead sales efforts for AOL.com and will report to Jim.</p>
<p>Don Kennedy will also report directly to me, taking our focus on the network to new levels and will continue to build out our Network Sales organization, working in close partnership with Dave Jacobs and Rob Luenberger.</p>
<p>Finally, Mark Ellis will be leaving the organization. I can&#8217;t thank Mark enough for all he has done for AOL and for the teams during his time here. He has been a great partner to me and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.</p>

<p>Apparently, it&#8217;s not only in Google&#8217;s pond where Facebook fishes for talent&#8211;the social networking giant has recruited Microsoft&#8217;s global advertising head Carolyn Everson as one of its top sales execs.</p>
<p>A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the hiring, after a query this afternoon by BoomTown. Everson will be VP of Global Sales at the Silicon Valley company, although is likely to be located in New York.</p>
<p>The move will surely cause some tensions with the software giant, which is both a prominent partner of and investor in Facebook, especially since Everson was only <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100603/microsoft-u-s-ad-sales-vp-domeniconi-to-depart-while-exec-from-mtv-arrives-to-run-global-online-sales">hired at Microsoft last June</a> after a long search.</p>
<p>Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg addressed that issue in a statement:</p>
<p>&#8220;Microsoft was one of our earliest partners and is still one of our most valued. We have a long and strong relationship that includes search ads on our site, a social layer on Bing search results and a deep and popular integration with Xbox. They are a leader when it comes to unlocking the power of social for their already popular products and services. We look forward to continuing to expand our relationship with them.&#8221;</p>
<p>A Microsoft spokesman declined to comment.</p>
<p>Despite the possible awkwardness between Facebook and Microsoft&#8211;<em>hey, we stole your top sales exec, but you rock!</em>&#8211;the move to Facebook is a big opportunity for Everson.</p>
<p>But, according to sources, the former MTV Networks ad exec had become frustrated by the intense focus on pushing traffic to Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search service from its MSN portal at the expense of premium ad sales.</p>
<p>In addition, with the massive search and advertising partnership between Microsoft and Yahoo now in place, Everson was also not able to offer search advertising from Microsoft to marketers in packages. Yahoo is now in charge of that offering.</p>
<p>Everson will essentially be replacing longtime and well-regarded Facebook ad exec Mike Murphy, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101026/exclusive-facebooks-longtime-ad-sales-head-mike-murphy-to-depart-company">left the Palo Alto, Calif., company</a> last fall. She will report to former Googler David Fischer, VP of Advertising and Global Operations.</p>
<p>But it was COO Sheryl Sandberg, said sources, who was most focused on Everson. In fact, she just &#8220;friended&#8221; Everson on Facebook this week, as did another top ad exec, Tom Arrix.</p>
<p>Having a top exec who is amenable to and well known by Madison Avenue is key for Facebook as it ramps up its business, in anticipation of an IPO next year.</p>
<p>Despite being private, Facebook has recently been valued at between $50 and $60 billion by investors, who have been eagerly buying up shares of the company on secondary markets.</p>
<p>Under Murphy and Fischer, ad sales have been doing well already. Facebook&#8217;s share of online display advertising has more than quadrupled, from about three percent to almost 14 percent of the nearly $9 billion U.S. market, according to a recent survey.</p>
<p>In growing so quickly, Facebook has grabbed ad revenue&#8211;reportedly $2 billion last year&#8211;from old online powerhouses, especially Yahoo and AOL, and is also in a big fight with Google over premium ad sales.</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s surging usage and engagement are the reasons for the increased interest from advertisers, as well as its global growth in both market share and mindshare of consumers.</p>
<p>Thus, the search for a Murphy replacement was far-ranging, and included interest in a number of prominent ad execs from traditional media giants and also ad agencies.</p>
<p>The appointment is a big move for the dynamic Everson, who has mostly worked in the mainstream media for much of her career.</p>
<p>Everson came to Microsoft from a job as EVP of Strategy and Operations for the MTV Networks U.S. ad sales department.</p>
<p>Interestingly, she was also on the short list of candidates Yahoo was once perusing to fill the key U.S. ad sales job after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">Joanne Bradford departed </a> for Demand Media.</p>

<p>He replaces Bob Muglia, a longtime exec who <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110110/head-of-microsofts-servers-and-business-unit-leaving-this-summer">was ousted recently</a> in CEO Steve Ballmer&#8217;s effort to shake things up at the company and stress the company&#8217;s technical expertise.</p>
<p>A 19-year Microsoft veteran, Nadella has most recently led the engineering efforts as an SVP in the Online Services Division, which includes Bing, the MSN portal and online advertising efforts.</p>
<p>&#8220;Nadella brings deep engineering and online services knowledge to $15 billion business,&#8221; said a Microsoft press release just issued.</p>
<p>In related news, Amitabh Srivastava, the SVP in the Server and Cloud Division who runs its Windows Azure cloud and Windows Server efforts, will leave the company. He was considered a leading internal candidate for the top job in the Server and Tools Business that Nadella got.</p>
<p>Both internal and external execs were eyed for the job, but it&#8217;s likely Nadella got it because of his early career in the server arena at Microsoft, as well as his experience running one of the biggest and most complex cloud efforts on the Web at Bing.</p>
<p>Indeed, though his efforts were costly and perhaps even futile, Nadella has had some success in innovating search for Microsoft with Bing, including delivering a well-regarded and quickly evolving product and improving market share.</p>
<p>He also was key in striking Microsoft&#8217;s advertising and search partnership with Yahoo.</p>
<p>He will have his hands full running the Server and Tools Business, which is critical to the company&#8217;s future and its cloud computing aspirations.</p>
<p>Microsoft said Nadella will be in charge of strategy, engineering, marketing and product development for Microsoft&#8217;s server, tools and cloud platform efforts.</p>
<p>&#8220;This includes developing the technology road map and vision to drive adoption of the company&#8217;s products, tools and services, and delivering the company&#8217;s next generation of cloud solutions for business customers,&#8221; Microsoft said.</p>
<p>Delivering such <em>cloudtastic</em> results will be a tall order, of course.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110110/head-of-microsofts-servers-and-business-unit-leaving-this-summer">recent post by New Enterprise&#8217;s Arik Hesseldahl</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;The Server and Tools Business is at $14.9 billion in annual revenue (fiscal 2010) Microsoft’s third largest division behind the Windows/Windows Live Division and and the Microsoft Business Division, both of which reported revenues north of $18 billion in 2010. On Muglia&#8217;s watch sales at STB grew more than 12 percent, and its operating margins went from 31 percent in 2008 to 37 percent in 2010. However, STB is nowhere near as profitable as the other two divisions: Business Division reported operating margins of 63 percent in 2010 while Windows saw 70 percent. Ballmer says in his memo that he&#8217;s eager to see stronger growth from STB.&#8221;</p>

This includes developing the technology road map and vision to drive adoption of the company&#8217;s products, tools and services, and delivering the company&#8217;s next generation of cloud solutions for business customers.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our server and tools business is one of the fastest growing and most profitable businesses at Microsoft,&#8221; Nadella said. &#8220;I see great opportunity for Microsoft to grow the business and also lead the way in the transformation of enterprise IT. I&#8217;m excited to work with such a high-caliber team to chart the path for our continued success today and growth in the future.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nadella, 43, has been with the company for 19 years and most recently led the engineering efforts in the Online Services Division, which includes overseeing the technical strategy for one of the largest cloud infrastructures in the world, spanning the company&#8217;s Search, Portal and Advertising platforms.</p>
<p>Nadella joined the Online Services Division in April 2007, and was instrumental in leading the technical efforts for several critical milestones such as the launch of Bing, new releases of MSN, and the integration of Yahoo! across Bing and adCenter. Under his leadership, the Online Services Division has also built a strong engineering organization by attracting some of the most experienced technical minds from within Microsoft and across the industry.</p>
<p>Before joining the Online Services Division, Nadella led Microsoft Business Solutions, which focuses on the Microsoft Dynamics line of enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management products, and spent several years leading engineering efforts in Microsoft’s Server Group.</p>
<p>As announced in January 2011, Bob Muglia, previously president of the Server and Tools Business, will leave the company this summer. Muglia will work with Nadella as he transitions to his new role leading the Server and Tools Business.<br />

<p>Mike Murphy&#8211;Facebook&#8217;s first head of advertising sales, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101026/exclusive-facebooks-longtime-ad-sales-head-mike-murphy-to-depart-company">left the social networking giant in October</a> to take some personal time off&#8211;seems done with relaxing.</p>
<p>He is now taking a part-time, but significant, role at online gaming phenom Zynga to help formulate its advertising strategy.</p>
<p>In addition, Murphy is also close to formalizing a consulting relationship with Facebook.</p>
<p>Given there has been strong interest from more obvious Facebook competitors in retaining Murphy&#8211;including Google and Twitter&#8211;his move to Zynga is probably the best outcome for it.</p>
<p>Although the relationship has been tense at times, Zynga remains one of Facebook&#8217;s major strategic partners.</p>
<p>Facebook has reportedly been close to filling Murphy&#8217;s job, talking to several major online ad execs recently, but has not yet replaced him.</p>
<p>While it is not clear what Murphy will be doing for Facebook, where former Google exec David Fischer runs the ad business, Murphy&#8217;s role at Zynga will be quite deep and could expand over time even more.</p>
<p>It will include overseeing the development of Zynga&#8217;s advertising strategy, team growth and advertising products, and creating new relationships with top brands.</p>
<p>After being contacted by BoomTown about the new job, Murphy confirmed it and said in a statement:</p>
<p>&#8220;Social games are becoming a core way for marketers to engage with their customers. Zynga&#8217;s network of games have created an incredible opportunity for advertisers to create passionate relationships and emotional connections with their customers.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, as it moves toward an inevitable IPO later this year, Zynga is upping its focus on building its advertising business, aiming at selling its fast-growing audience and the frequency and engagement they use its casual gaming products.</p>
<p>At Zynga, Murphy will lead and build the team, scaling its relationships with big-name partners.</p>
<p>The company has already dipped its toe in this arena, integrating some major brands into its games in recent campaigns.</p>
<p>Such online-offline customer efforts, although early, have had strong adoption, such as a recent one to plant branded blueberry crops&#8211;<em>organic!</em>&#8211;in its flagship FarmVille game for General Mills cereals.</p>
<p>There has also been a McDonald&#8217;s-branded farm in FarmVille. (<em>McReally</em>.)</p>
<p>Interestingly, in an inside-Silicon-Valley-baseball way, the move to Zynga will reunite Murphy, the former Yahoo exec who ran global advertising strategy for Facebook for five years, with Owen Van Natta.</p>
<p>Van Natta was once COO of Facebook and hired Murphy there. He is now EVP of Business at Zynga.</p>
<p>Along with Murphy, Van Natta has also brought in Dani Dudeck as communications head from Myspace, where he had a rocky tenure as CEO of the News Corp. unit.</p>
<p>And Katie Geminder, who was a design and user interface exec at both Facebook and Myspace, is also now at Zynga in a similar full-time role.</p>
<p>At the time he announced his departure from Facebook in the fall, Murphy said he had decided to step down in order to take some personal time off, noting that hundreds of nights on the road over the years had been enough.</p>
<p>&#8220;For the last five years of hyper-growth here, I have been focused on Facebook,&#8221; said Murphy. &#8220;Now, I felt it was time to shift that focus to my family.&#8221;</p>
<p>And now, apparently, to Zynga.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s not <em>all</em> departures!</p>
<p>Yahoo is hiring former News Corp. and Disney online exec Mickie Rosen (pictured here) to run its Audience unit, which includes the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s powerful content sites, sources said.</p>
<p>Starting next week, Rosen will report to Americas head Ross Levinsohn, who has worked with her before, at both News Corp. and Fuse Capital.</p>
<p>Her new title is SVP of the Yahoo Media Network, which is apparently a rebranding of Audience.</p>
<p>Previous to this job, Rosen was CEO of Tecca, a price-checking service Fuse created in partnership with Best Buy.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s likely she will remain based in the Los Angeles area, where Yahoo has a large office in Santa Monica, Calif.</p>
<p>The move is Levinsohn&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110105/yahoos-display-ad-vp-gm-departs-meanwhile-hair-tastic-u-s-head-reorgs-unit/">first management rejiggering</a> since he took over last year, and there is likely to be more to come.</p>
<p>Rosen, who has also worked at the Fandango online movie ticketing site, will replace interim audience head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole/">Raymond Stern</a>, who will be&#8211;as before&#8211;running partnerships and business development, as well as Yahoo&#8217;s listings business.</p>
<p>Rosen&#8217;s new job had actually been that of former Audience head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101004/exclusive-yahoos-david-ko-to-head-mobile-at-online-gaming-powerhouse-zynga">David Ko</a>, as well as former <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants">Media VP Jimmy Pitaro</a>.</p>
<p>Ko left Yahoo and is now heading mobile games at Zynga, while Pitaro is a top digital exec at Disney.</p>

<p>Mickie built the foundation of her career with McKinsey &#038; Company, where she spent seven years consulting with senior management on strategy, operational and organizational issues across a number of industries, including media and technology.<br />
Mickie has an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a B.A. in Economics from UC San Diego, and is based in Los Angeles.</p></blockquote>
