Verizon Creates New Enterprise Unit Spanning Its Wireless and Wireline Chasm

Verizon Communications has run its wireline business separately from Verizon Wireless (which is a joint venture 45 percent owned by Vodafone). On Wednesday, however, it announced plans for a new enterprise unit that will combine efforts aimed at large businesses and be headed by John Stratton, who has been chief operating officer for Verizon Wireless.

What an astonishing coincidence: Motorola and Verizon Wireless have set a date for the debut of their next-generation Droid device–Wednesday, June 23, one day prior to the street date for release of Apple’s iPhone 4.

As expected, Palm announced today that its smartphones–two new variations on the Pre and the Pixi, actually–will be available on Verizon Wireless soon. Also coming: Some software updates, including a nifty one that will give existing handsets the ability to record video.
