On April 20, <a href="http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/press-releases/alaska-communications-offer-iphone-4s-april-20">Alaska Communications</a> and <a href="http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/press-releases/ntelos-wireless-offer-iphone-4s-april-20">nTelos Wireless</a> will become the fifth and sixth U.S. carriers to add the device to their portfolios. Notably, nTelos plans to sell the iPhone 4S at a $50 discount.</p>
<p>For Apple, these are small distribution deals. Alaska Communications has a little more than 100,000 subscribers in its namesake territory; nTelos has about 400,000 in Virginia and surrounding states. That&#8217;s far, far fewer than AT&#038;T or Verizon, which both claim more than 100 million. Still, signing up smaller carriers is important to Apple&#8217;s push for iPhone ubiquity, and these deals with nTelos and Alaska, small as they are, will help accelerate its market-share growth.</p>
<p><strong>Update</strong>: Looks like this is a far broader regional rollout than originally thought. <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2012/04/04/broad-rollout-of-cdma-iphone-to-small-u-s-carriers-coming-on-april-20/">As MacRumors notes</a>, GCI in Alaska, Appalachian Wireless in Kentucky and Cellcom in Wisconsin will also add the iPhone to their lineups on April 20.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Amazon is expanding its warehouse capacity at an insanely aggressive pace, having already announced five new distribution centers so far this year, including two since yesterday.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/06/amazonsm.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-93511" title="amazonsm" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/06/amazonsm.jpg" alt="" width="380" height="285" /></a>The five new facilities will add about four million square feet of space and hire thousands of new employees.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s just the beginning. The company has plans to expand even more as it adds more merchandise to its inventory and tries to speed shipping to meet the popularity of services like Amazon Prime.</p>
<p>In all, the Seattle-based e-commerce giant plans to add at least nine fulfillment centers this year, of which roughly half will be located in North America. If the company&#8217;s growth rates continue, it may end up building even more, execs disclosed during its last earnings call.</p>
<p>It is the second year in a row that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/amazon/">Amazon</a> has built out more capacity, having added 13 fulfillment centers in 2010. The company currently has fulfillment centers in Arizona, Delaware, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.</p>
<p>Today, it announced it will build a fourth distribution center in Phoenix, spanning 1.2 million square feet, making a total of 4 million square feet in the state. For perspective, that&#8217;s the equivalent of nearly 70 football fields.</p>
<p>Yesterday, it said it was adding 900,000 square feet in Indiana.</p>
<p>Amazon hires thousands of full-time positions at these facilities, including roles in picking, packing and receiving, and shipping.</p>
<p>Amazon did not specify how many employees would be necessary at each location, but said for example that it was seeking 2,000 workers in Lexington County, S.C., and 2,700 in Hamilton County, Tenn. (not including 4,000 seasonal workers).</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s impressive growth was put into context earlier this year <a href="http://www.geekwire.com/2011/amazoncom-profits-tank-company-adds-whopping-4200-employees-quarter">by Geekwire</a>, which reported that Amazon had hired 4,200 employees in the first quarter to bring its total to 37,900.</p>
<p>While Amazon must build these facilities to keep up with demand, the investments are costing it significantly. In the first quarter, Amazon’s revenues jumped 38 percent, but net income fell by 33 percent compared to the year-ago period.</p>
<p>Still, it&#8217;s a price that must be paid. You can&#8217;t store everything in the cloud.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-12-15/gilt-groupe-is-said-to-raise-at-least-15-million-from-triplepoint-capital.html?cmpid=yhoo">Despite new reports of the funding today</a>, the line of credit from TriplePoint Capital is months-old, and we&#8217;ve learned it was used primarily for building out a new warehouse in Louisville, Ky.</p>
<p>According to our sources, who declined to be named, only $5 million of the $15 million has been drawn down from the facility, and it&#8217;s one of three lines of credit the company has. The company spokeswoman declined to comment.</p>
<p>The Gilt Groupe is a members-only online retailer focused on luxury brands. It has seen huge success in offering deep discounts on items for short periods of time. More recently, it has set its sights on the local deals business, similar to the businesses being built by Groupon and LivingSocial. It has also expanded into offering luxury travel deals.</p>
<p>Gilt&#8217;s local deals site, called &#8220;Gilt City,&#8221; offers bargains on items ranging from massages to frozen yogurt. So far, it&#8217;s launched in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Francisco. It&#8217;s going up against two feisty and well-funded competitors: LivingSocial, which just raised $175 million in capital from Amazon, and Groupon, which turned down Google&#8217;s $6 billion acquisition bid.</p>
<p>A round of funding raised this summer supported those product rollouts. In total, the company has raised upward of $50 million from investors, including General Atlantic and Matrix Partners.</p>
<p>The line of credit shows that the emerging company still needs additional financing for one-off capital projects as resources are pulled in other directions. A big focus is likely on hiring a local salesforce, which is considered a specialty of Groupon. Still, Gilt Groupe is considered one of the more likely IPO candidates, and has said in the past that it expects to achieve gross revenues of $400 million to $500 million by the end of this calendar year.</p>

<p>Chegg, the online textbook rental service, has raised another $75 million from Asia-based Ace Limited, according to sources.</p>
<p>Ace seems to be nonexistent on the Internet, although sources said it is a Hong Kong-based investment firm.</p>
<p>The round comes after a huge Series D investment in late 2009, which already brought Chegg&#8217;s funding to a whopping $144 million.</p>
<p>Venture firms, such as Kleiner Perkins, Foundation Capital, Insight Venture Partners and others have presumably handed over that money in hopes of big returns.</p>
<p>And, of course, the inevitable IPO for the Silicon Valley start-up.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because Chegg has become the front-runner in the increasingly competitive online textbook rental space as it seeks to disrupt the $10 billion college textbook business.</p>
<p>Chegg got its start in 2005 at Iowa State University as a classified rental service, where books were the dominant item, but evolved its business to focus on actually doing the textbook rentals.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s unusual name, Chegg, is a mashup of &#8220;chicken and egg,&#8221; and its model is similar to that of innovative video rental outfit Netflix (NFLX).</p>
<p>Chegg now serves close to 7,000 schools across the U.S., with 120 employees in Silicon Valley and more at a warehouse operation in Louisville, Ky.</p>
<p>Typically, a rental costs a fraction of what buying a book outright does. It is ordered online and then sent to a renter, who then returns it.</p>
<p>There is, of course, lots of competition.</p>
<p>The Barnes &amp; Noble (BKS) College division recently began testing a textbook rental program, for example, and is rolling it out to 25 U.S. colleges. And <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100305/almost-famous-mehdi-maghsoodnia-of-bookrenter">BookRenter</a> is a smaller rival.</p>
<p>In a bid to expand its offerings beyond books, Chegg recently acquired CourseRank, a Mountain View, Calif., start-up that helps students &#8220;share their course schedule, take classes with their friends, read and write reviews on classes and professors as well as find out how professors grade.&#8221;</p>

<p>Earlier this week, BoomTown went down to Santa Clara, Calif. to the offices of Chegg, the online textbook rental leader, to pay a visit on longtime Silicon Valley exec Dan Rosensweig.</p>
<p>The voluble Rosensweig has had a series on interesting posts, from stints at CNET Networks and Ziff-Davis before a top job at Yahoo (YHOO). After that, it was as a partner at the Quadrangle Group and then running the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090322/exclusive-dan-rosensweig-steps-up-to-takes-his-licks-as-guitar-hero-frontman">Guitar Hero division</a> of Activision Blizzard (ATVI).</p>
<p>Now he is CEO of Chegg, where he <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100202/exclusive-rosensweig-to-leave-guitar-hero-takes-over-as-ceo-of-online-textbook-rental-startup-chegg">arrived in February</a>.</p>
<p>After raising $144 million in funding, Chegg has become the front-runner in the increasingly competitive online textbook rental space.</p>
<p>Venture firms, such as Kleiner Perkins, Foundation Capital and, most recently, Insight Venture Partners, have presumably handed over that money to co-founders Osman Rashid and Aayush Phumbhra in hopes of big returns.</p>
<p>And, of course, the inevitable IPO.</p>
<p>Chegg got its start in 2005 at Iowa State University as a classified rental service, where books were the dominant item, but evolved its business to focus on actually doing the textbook rentals.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s unusual name, Chegg, is a mashup of chicken and egg and its model is similar to that of innovative video rental outfit Netflix (NFLX).</p>
<p>Chegg now serves close to 7,000 schools across the U.S., with 120 employees in Silicon Valley and more at a warehouse operation in Louisville, Ky.</p>
<p>Typically, a rental costs a fraction of what buying a book outright does. It is ordered online and then sent to a renter, who then returns it.</p>
<p>All this activity has attracted a lot of interest from both big and small players, especially given the $10 billion college textbook business.</p>
<p>That makes for lots of competition. The Barnes &#038; Noble (BKS) College division recently began testing a textbook rental program, for example, and is rolling it out to 25 U.S. colleges. And <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100305/almost-famous-mehdi-maghsoodnia-of-bookrenter">BookRenter</a> is a smaller competitor.</p>
<p>Today, in a bid to expand its offerings beyond books, Chegg said it had acquired CourseRank, a Mountain View, Calif. start-up that helps students &#8220;share their course schedule, take classes with their friends, read and write reviews on classes and professors as well as find out how professors grade.&#8221;</p>
<p>Terms of the deal were not disclosed.</p>

<p>Facebook confirmed that it expects to announce its 500-millionth user next week, and will mark the occasion with a new consumer marketing initiative called &#8220;Facebook Stories.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last week, BoomTown got wind of the effort&#8211;which will center on a variety of life stories from users about the impact of the social networking site on their lives&#8211;and asked Facebook about it.</p>
<p>The company said it was readying its launch for next week and put Randi Zuckerberg on the horn to tell me the story behind &#8220;Stories.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;As we anticipated our 500-million milestone, and we wanted to find a different way to announce and celebrate it,&#8221; said Zuckerberg, who has spearheaded the site&#8217;s creation, in an interview this afternoon. &#8220;In the past, it&#8217;s been all about the numbers and milestones, and we realized we had never taken the opportunity to celebrate users.&#8221;</p>
<p>Getting to the 500-million mark, though, is a big deal for the Silicon Valley-based Facebook, which has been growing wildly over the last several years across the globe.</p>
<p>While the number has been widely expected to be announced soon, it will still be a big landmark in the history of the company.</p>
<p>Thus, a Web site within Facebook that is a visualization of some of the many kinds of consumer stories the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=user_stories">company has collected over the years</a>, but never showed off.</p>
<p>The stories will have two views&#8211;organized by by geographical location and by theme, such as &#8220;finding love,&#8221; &#8220;coping with grief&#8221; and &#8220;natural disasters.&#8221;</p>
<p>Facebook has seeded the selection with about 200 text stories it has, asking users again for permission to feature them.</p>
<p>But the point is to open the page up to all users to submit their tale in 420 characters, the same number as a status update on Facebook. The story can also be linked to the user&#8217;s profile.</p>
<p>Users can also &#8220;Like&#8221; stories, and the most popular will be featured. The site will also be optimized for the other devices, such as the Apple (AAPL) iPad and Amazon (AMZN) Kindle.</p>
<p>The site was designed by two outside firms, social marketing company Involver and JESS3, a design, branding and data visualization firm.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg, who said she would be adding her own story, said her favorite so far has been the story of a group that coalesced on Facebook to save an old theater in Kentucky.</p>
<p>But she is hoping for a varied collection that will appeal to, well, the soon-to-be 500 million people on Facebook.</p>
<p>&#8220;We really think by surfacing these stories, users can explain what Facebook is a lot better than we can,&#8221; said Zuckerberg.</p>

<p>After what he considered weeks of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100622/what-to-make-of-the-microsoft-is-falling-and-it-cant-get-up-meme/">unfair press coverage and running down of Microsoft</a> (MSFT), the software giant&#8217;s Corporate VP of Corporate Communications, <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/shaw/">Frank Shaw</a>, posted a <a href="http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_blog/archive/2010/06/25/microsoft-by-the-numbers.aspx">pugnacious corporate blog entry</a> today that trotted out some impressive numbers about Microsoft&#8217;s business.</p>
<p>Of course, he also took the opportunity to put up some not-so-much figures about competitors such as Apple (AAPL), Netflix (NFLX), Salesforce.com (CRM) and, of course, Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>My favorite dig is the stat on the &#8220;percent chance that Salesforce.com CEO [Marc Benioff] will mention Microsoft in a speech, panel, interview, or blog post.&#8221; The answer, <em>natch</em>: 100!</p>
<p>As it turns out, that was a follow-up to a very sharply worded letter Shaw sent out to communications teams across Microsoft (MSFT) earlier this month, obtained by BoomTown, in which he noted at the start:</p>
<p>&#8220;It has been a rough couple of weeks for us from a coverage standpoint. It seems like every time I turn on the computer, or talk to a reporter, or pick up a publication at home, or do a scan of my RSS feeds or Twitter client that I see more stories and opinions about the challenges we have, and how great some of our competitors are doing. iPad this, Droid that, sheesh.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Sheesh?</em> Who says that anymore?</p>
<p>Still, I like his gumption in using it! Thus, Shaw&#8211;who is an active blogger and <a href="http://twitter.com/fxshaw">Twitter poster</a>&#8211;is apparently mad as <em>heck</em> and not going to take it anymore!</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p>It has been a rough couple of weeks for us from a coverage standpoint. It seems like every time I turn on the computer, or talk to a reporter, or pick up a publication at home, or do a scan of my RSS feeds or Twitter client that I see more stories and opinions about the challenges we have, and how great some of our competitors are doing. iPad this, Droid that, sheesh. Even BusinessWeek got into the act, taking some unfair shots at Natal under the guise of looking at our consumer strategy all up. Man, when someone is beating on Natal prior to E3, you can bet we&#8217;ve got momentum against us.</p>
<p>Sitting there at the All Things Digital conference last week and hearing from our competitors really got me thinking, though. What is our differentiation? Why do we make certain decisions? What drives the way we think about business and technology? The morning after the Steve Jobs q&#038;a (which everyone should watch), I dragged myself out of bed to go for a run. As I&#8217;d driven into the hotel, I noticed with a sinking feeling that there were lots of hills. I asked the desk clerk if they had a jogging map. They did not. I asked if he could point me a direction that did not have a bunch of hills. He laughed and pointed &#8220;up&#8221; the driveway and said that if I turned left there would be a nice running path. &#8220;I drove in that direction,&#8221; I said. &#8220;Seems like it&#8217;s uphill.&#8221; He shrugged, and away I went. Up.</p>
<p>And to keep my mind off the elevation gain, I was thinking about that previous question&#8211;what drives Microsoft? Coming up the second hill, I got it. Fundamentally, we believe that we have the opportunity to make life better for billions of people around the world through our products and services. Not millions, not tens of millions, but billions. We started with the idea of a computer on every desktop, and even though the computer looks a lot different today than it did those years, and even though the developed world probably does have a computer on every desk, there are still billions more to go, and we are going to get there. And when you start thinking about serving billions, which we do, we’re playing a game that nobody else in the industry is. I don&#8217;t know about you, but I come to work thinking about what I can do to help w/ that big goal. And it’s not all altruism and unicorns, when we do a great job of creating products that make life better for billions, it makes us better as a company, we sell more, we learn more, our partners do better, we do better. And when you have big dreams and big ambitions (like we do) and when you set the bar high (which we do) then sometimes we don&#8217;t get over the bar. There are people in the world that see that and call it failure; but failing to hit the mark doesn&#8217;t mean quitting. That&#8217;s part of our culture, too.</p>
<p>The run back to the hotel was easier. I even scrambled up a bluff next to the path (imagining the theme to &#8220;Rocky&#8221; in my head) and stood looking out over the Pacific for a bit. And I thought about our challenges, internal and external. External is easy. Internal is harder.</p>
<p>There is a saying I&#8217;ve heard a bunch since I’ve been at Microsoft: &#8220;Hope is not a strategy.&#8221; Heck, I&#8217;ve used it myself, and felt pretty superior while saying it, since I was talking about something I didn&#8217;t really own. But standing on the bluff, I wondered.</p>
<p>In my last mail, I referenced the need for us all to be comfortable in the gap between what is and what we desire to create. If we simply live in what we have, we become cynics. And if hope is not a strategy, then neither is cynicism, and we have lots of cynics among us. It is a challenge, especially for those of us who help tell our story. I often see it used, and use it myself, to cover up the pain of not meeting a goal, or seeing a product/service be ill-received by the market. If I am able to mock and sneer, then nobody outside the company can make me feel worse at setbacks and even failures.</p>
<p>As the evangelists for the company, we must guard against this. Hope can&#8217;t be a strategy, but it (and its cousin belief) is a needed ingredient in any success. Think about this for a bit. Each and every one of us needs to be grounded in our challenges and our wins. Right now, we are massively over-indexed in thinking and knowing about our losses and challenges. But what of our wins?</p>
<p>At the conference later that day, I had a chance to engage in a spirited and mostly friendly discussion with some folks who thought we were doing a crap job all up. Stock price flat, no iPad, etc. Instead of shrugging and agreeing, I talked about our wins and our momentum. We&#8217;ve built a huge server business over the last decade, something else nobody has done. Windows 7 sales are up about 39 percent year over year, against a huge base. Office 2010 beta largest ever, Office is in the cloud. Bing is one year old, 4 points of market share&#8211;nobody has grown search market share against Google but we are doing it. They are copying our look, our home page. New Hotmail is driving them to offer something other than threaded email for Gmail. Xbox Live has 23 million users&#8211;again, only two companies in the last decade have built subscription services like this (Netflix is the other). Windows Azure has 10,000 paying customers, we just announced 700k deployment of live@edu, probably the largest cloud deployment in the world. Natal is coming, it&#8217;s cool. Yes, we want to (and will) do better in phones. Yes, we want to (and will) have more cool thin slate/tablet/other form factor devices that run Windows. I&#8217;ll tell you, while I don&#8217;t think I created any true believers, I did force people to think differently about Microsoft and what we&#8217;re doing, and I call that a win.</p>
<p>This is our job.  We don&#8217;t just represent the products and services we work on, we represent the company all up. Be ready to tell that story. Tell it to your co-workers here at Microsoft, to your family and friends, to members of the media. They know about our challenges, they don&#8217;t know about our wins and momentum. So tell them.</p>

<p>&#8220;All About Microsoft&#8221; crack blogger <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=2440">Mary-Jo Foley of ZDNet</a> recently wrote about the Bing name, which is registered to the company, as well as &#8220;Hook&#8221; and the one that Microsoft is using now as its test name, Kumo.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090302/a-sneak-peek-look-at-microsofts-new-kumo">Kumo means &#8220;cloud&#8221; and &#8220;spider&#8221;</a> in Japanese, which seems a wee bit esoteric.</p>
<p>Today, <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-yet-another-microsoft-search-brand-this-time-for-phones/">paidContent.org dropped &#8220;Sift&#8221;</a> into the mix, although it seems to be related to mobile phones, along with &#8220;Swivel.&#8221;</p>
<p>I, for one, am feeling both like flour and getting dizzy at the thought of those names.</p>
<p>Foley at ZDnet feels the same, <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=2562">noting today in a post</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;(Would Microsoft be crazy enough to trademark its general Web search engine and its search engine for mobile with two different names, say Bing and Sift? As Windows Live has shown, truth can be stranger than fiction&#8230;.)&#8221;</p>
<p>Microsoft (MSFT), of course, is keeping the name for its search service under tight wraps, but it is obviously going to be spending a shipload of money on its branding in another attempt to catch market leaders Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090420/update-on-yahoo-microsoft-talks-hot-and-heavy/">Microsoft has been recently talking to Yahoo about a search partnership deal</a>, although they are likely both to keep their brands and search products in any event.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, execs and minions in the know laugh at me loudly when I ask them to leak it to me.</p>
<p>(Note to anyone at Microsoft: Pretty please, someone leak it to me, even if it&#8217;s in the form of a memo from the leaky cauldron that is Yahoo.)</p>

<p>Hey, if <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auric_Goldfinger">Auric Goldfinger</a>, OddJob and Pussy Galore could get into Fort Knox in that most excellent James Bond film, I can certainly find out the name of Microsoft&#8217;s search service!</p>
<p>Personally, I like Bing, and cherries from Washington state are indeed tasty (and coming soon too!)</p>
<p>According to the <a href="http://www.heartofwashington.com/consumer/cherries.html">Heart of Washington</a> Web site, its state&#8217;s cherries rate. Some fun factoids:</p>
<p>- Washington State produces more than 50 percent of all the sweet cherries in the United States.<br />

<p><a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-10013327-38.htmll?tag=nefd.lede">News.com reports today</a> that at least nine states this year have considered enacting &#8220;download taxes&#8221; on digital goods&#8211;and five of those states have adopted them, including Nebraska, Tennessee, Indiana and Utah. Similar laws are already on the books in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Washington.</p>
