It began with reports that <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=arvXvuu.DqW4">the company is for sale</a> and continued with news of the departure of software chief Michael Abbott. Now comes another ugly development: RadioShack appears to be dumping the company’s smartphone line. The Palm Pre and Pixi have disappeared from the retailer’s Web site and from the shelves of many of its stores. </p>
<p>As of this writing, <a href="http://www.radioshack.com/shop/index.jsp?categoryId=2540576">RadioShack’s Palm Store is entirely empty</a> (&#8220;What are you shopping for in our Palm Store?&#8221; &#8220;Nothing!&#8221;). And CL King analyst Lawrence Harris reports that a number of RadioShack locations are no longer stocking the Sprint (S) version of the Pre and Pixi. </p>
<p>&#8220;Over the weekend we visited multiple RadioShack locations in the New York metro area,&#8221; Harris writes. &#8220;Most were no longer carrying the Palm Pre or Pixi. One location still had some Pixi’s, but no Pre’s in stock. The store manager told us that sales of the Pixi would be limited to the stock on hand, with no further shipments expected. Historically, RadioShack has been an important sales channel for Sprint. In recent weeks RadioShack was offering both Palm models for free, probably in order to clear out inventory.&#8221;</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve asked both Palm (PALM) and RadioShack (RSH) for comment and will update here if and when I&#8217;m given one.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Wendy Dominguez, corporate media relations manager for RadioShack, just provided me with the following comment: &#8220;For competitive reasons we don&#8217;t comment on inventory numbers and distribution of specific devices. Palm has been a good partner. We expect that relationship to continue.&#8221;</p>
<p>Dominguez declined to explain why Palm devices are no longer available for sale in RadioShack&#8217;s Palm Store. Nor would she comment on reports that the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi have disappeared from a number of the company&#8217;s brick-and-mortar locations.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Palm has declined comment.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> <a href="http://blogs.barrons.com/techtraderdaily/2010/04/19/sprint-confirms-radio-shack-phasing-out-palm-pre-pixi-sales/">Sprint has confirmed to Tech Trader Daily that it is indeed phasing out sales of  both the Palm Pixi and Pre</a>. “The plan is for the Pre to be replaced by a BlackBerry device and the Pixi for a message-centric device,&#8221; a spokesman told the blog.</p>

<p>Will lousy brand awareness be Palm’s Waterloo? With weaker than expected launches of the Pre and Pixi at new carrier partner Verizon, it’s beginning to look like it. </p>
<p>Certainly, Palm’s leadership appears to believe that insufficient carrier support is largely to blame for its <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100225/palm-agonistes/">current woes</a>. In an all-hands memo to employees yesterday (full text below), Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein said the company is taking some extraordinary measures to address unexpectedly weak sales for its handset lineup. To drive demand at Verizon and raise its customers&#8217; apparently limited awareness of webOS, Palm (PALM) has initiated Project JumpStart, a sort of product evangelism outreach program. </p>

&#8220;To accelerate sales, we initiated Project JumpStart nearly three weeks ago. Since then, nearly two hundred Palm Brand Ambassadors, supplemented by Palm employees from Sunnyvale, have been training Verizon (VZ) sales reps across the U.S. on our products. Early results from the stores have already shown improvement on product knowledge and sales week over week. You may have also seen a growing number of Palm ads on billboards, bus shelters, buses, and subway stations&#8211;all getting the word out about Palm.&#8221;
</p></blockquote>
<p>A wise move, particularly given reports that Verizon sales reps unfamiliar with Palm’s smartphones often opt to pitch more familiar devices like Motorola&#8217;s (MOT) Droid and RIM&#8217;s Blackberry to new customers. Additional in-store training should help drive sales volume, assuming  Palm’s offerings are  compelling and differentiated enough to withstand comparison with rival devices.</p>
<p>The question, of course: <em>Are they</em>? And while<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090604/qotd-palm-pre-review-roundup/?"> initial reviews of the Pre and webOS operating system</a> suggested they were, it’s hard not to look at Palm’s current situation and conclude that they really might not be&#8211;particularly with new and impressive Android and Windows Phone 7 devices headed to market and Apple (AAPL) and Research in Motion (RIMM) both presumably working on refreshes of their iconic devices.  </p>
<p>&#8220;Given the sizable discounts now prevalent on the Pixi, it now suggests that the real problems for the Pixi and the Pre go beyond insufficient carrier support and unfocused TV advertising campaigns,&#8221; CL King analyst Lawrence Harris observed in a research note to clients this morning. &#8220;Rather, consumers are not finding the Pixi a compelling product in an increasingly competitive smartphone market.&#8221;</p>
<p>If that’s truly the case, these Palm Brand Ambassadors the company is sending to Verizon (VZ) have their work cut out for them, at least at the moment.  Sources close to Palm tell me the company plans to introduce at least one new smartphone this year. Perhaps that will be the device that drives demand and pushes the company back to profitability.</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>
Team,</p>
<p>This morning we announced preliminary results for our 2010 third quarter. Since the quarter has not yet closed, it is too soon to offer exact numbers, but we stated that we expect to report revenues for Q3 between $300 and $320 million. We also announced that we expect our revenue for this fiscal year to fall below the guidance we gave to Wall Street, which ranged from $1.6 to $1.8 billion. As we mentioned in our press release, our softer than expected performance is due to slower than expected customer adoption of our products, which in turn has prompted our U.S. carrier partners to put additional orders on hold for the time being. On a positive note, we expect to exit the quarter with over $500 million in cash on our balance sheet. We’re scheduled to announce our full financial results in March.</p>
<p>I realize this news is difficult to swallow. We made this announcement today to prevent a surprise for Wall Street when we announce quarterly earnings in March. In the meantime, the entire executive team has been working extremely hard to improve product performance, and have implemented a number of initiatives to increase awareness and drive sales.</p>
<p>Dave Whalen and I just returned from a very successful meeting with Verizon Wireless, where they acknowledged that their execution of our launch was below expectations and recommitted to working with us to improve sales. To accelerate sales, we initiated Project JumpStart nearly three weeks ago. Since then, nearly two hundred Palm Brand Ambassadors, supplemented by Palm employees from Sunnyvale, have been training Verizon sales reps across the U.S. on our products. Early results from the stores have already shown improvement on product knowledge and sales week over week. You may have also seen a growing number of Palm ads on billboards, bus shelters, buses, and subway stations&#8211;all getting the word out about Palm.</p>
<p>All of these efforts are examples of how we are working to accelerate adoption and grow distribution of webOS. In the next few weeks, your management will work with you to make sure your priorities are laser-focused, primarily on helping to increase sales, improve product quality and differentiate the Palm product experience.</p>
<p>Our goals are taking longer than expected to achieve, but I am still confident that our talented team has what it takes to get the job done.</p>
<p>We’ll schedule an all-hands meeting after our earnings announcement in March, and I’ll be happy to answer your questions.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, the company distributed invitations to a press event scheduled for the first day of the annual exposition in early January, but provided few details about what to expect. </p>
<p>Last year at CES, Palm <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090108/live-from-ces-palm-unveils-nova/">introduced the Pre and its new webOS operating system</a>, so expectations for this gathering are already running high. Some expect Palm (PALM) to uncrate a new webOS handset, one designed to better compete with new rivals like Droid, Google’s (GOOG) Nexus One and the next iteration of Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone. The next iteration of the Pre, perhaps. Others expect the company to introduce webOS 1.5 or 2.0. </p>
<p>Reasonable predictions, both. Still, as CL King analyst Lawrence Harris notes, the safest bet of all is a new carrier partnership, something that has been rumored for quite some time and seems a certainty after a recent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/13/palm-pixi-clears-fcc-with-verizon-frequencies-and-wifi-in-tow/">Federal Communications Commission filing</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;At last year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Palm announced the Pre,&#8221; Harris wrote in a note to clients today. &#8220;We anticipate that it will officially confirm its relationship with Verizon at this year’s event. Verizon previously indicated that it would begin selling the Pre in early calendar 2010. Also, a version of the Pixi with Wi-Fi was recently approved by the FCC&#8230;.It is also possible that Palm’s distribution arrangement with AT&#038;T for the Pixi will be announced.&#8221;</p>

And now it seems that day has finally come. </p>
<p>Shares in the handset maker fell some 23 percent last week amid concerns about increased competition from Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system, which is being rolled out on a number of devices at a variety of carriers, including Palm partner Sprint (S). </p>
<p>This morning, analysts at Citigroup (C) cut their recommendations to sell from hold on Palm (PALM) while simultaneously raising their rating on Motorola (MOT) because of its &#8220;compelling&#8221; new Android handset, Droid. </p>
<p>&#8220;Motorola is launching of one of the most compelling offerings at [a] time when many investors have given up on the company’s handsets,&#8221; Citigroup analyst Jim Suva wrote in a research note. </p>
<p>&#8220;The revolution of product and application service offerings,&#8221; Suva added, &#8220;is going to start to crack open the enterprise door and could pose a risk for BlackBerry. Major shifts in promotion support creating a promotion commotion in the months ahead favor Motorola and post a challenge for RIMM and PALM.&#8221;</p>
<p>Over at CL King, analyst Lawrence Harris is similarly dubious of Palm’s prospects in the months ahead. Noting that Sprint executive David Owens said last week that the carrier plans to peddle a number of new Android devices from HTC next year, Harris sees unfavorable implications for Palm. </p>
<p>&#8220;Historically, Sprint has been Palm’s largest customer. Indeed, in the August quarter Sprint accounted for 85 percent of Palm’s revenues,&#8221; Harris wrote in a note to investors. &#8220;In FY09 (May) Sprint represented 43 percent of total Palm sales. Sprint has a U.S. exclusive on both the Pre and the Pixi through calendar year end. The Pixi will be launched at Sprint on November 15 for $99.99. The Pixi is fairly similar to the $149.99 Pre. Verizon has stated that it will begin offering the Pre in early CY10.&#8221;</p>
<p>Expounding on his analysis, Harris notes that &#8220;According to a report on Mobile Today, a U.K.-based publication, initial sales of the Pre through Telefonica’s O2 unit in the U.K. have been slow. If this report is correct, than the bulk of Palm’s sales over the next few months will probably continue to be generated through Sprint.&#8221;</p>
<p>That Sprint will soon add some slick new Android handsets to its lineup is worrisome, then, indeed. For Palm, it seems,  driving conditions on the road to recovery are looking increasingly hazardous.</p>

<p>In its second quarter&#8211;the first with the Pre in its lineup&#8211;Sprint (S) lost 991,000 postpaid subscribers. And in its third, reported yesterday, its lost 801,000. So subscriber loss, while unquestionably gruesome, is diminishing.</p>
<p>How much of this is due to Palm&#8217;s (PALM) Pre? Not that much, says CL King &#038; Associates analyst Lawrence Harris, who believes the Pre had only a moderate impact on Sprint’s postpaid subscriber base.</p>
<p>&#8220;Within postpaid, the number of CDMA-only subscriber losses was about 100,000 in the September quarter, compared to the 200,000 in the June quarter,&#8221; Harris wrote in a research note to clients. &#8220;At Sprint, the Palm Pre is a CDMA-only postpaid device. The number of Sprint postpaid subscribers upgrading their handsets was slightly higher in the September quarter than in the June quarter at just over 2.0 million.&#8221;</p>
<p>According to Harris, &#8220;This number provides some indication of the available market for all high-end devices at Sprint. In Palm’s August quarter, 85% of the company’s sales went to Sprint. Given the absence of growth in Sprint’s CDMA postpaid category, it appears likely that most of the Palm Pre sales went to existing Sprint subscribers as opposed to winning customers from other carriers.”</p>
<p>That would seem to be the case. Sprint rivals AT&#038;T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ) each added subscribers during the second quarter&#8211;1.4 million and 1.1 million, respectively. So if the Pre did anything for Sprint, it helped to stem CDMA postpaid losses a bit.</p>
<p>And that’s something, right? After all, there’s no panacea for Sprint’s affliction&#8211;well, perhaps there is, but it’s locked up in an exclusivity agreement with AT&#038;T (T). Still, when Sprint last reported earnings, CEO Dan Hesse said the carrier expected to sign up more new customers as the Pre gained wider distribution through retail outlets like Best Buy (BBY) and RadioShack. And that doesn’t really seemed to have happened. Perhaps next quarter after Sprint launches <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091026/palm-pixi-launches-nov-15-for-99-after-rebates/">the Pre’s not-quite-cheaper sibling, the Pixi</a>.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> A quick addendum. In a research note this morning, Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett notes that while Sprint has reduced subscriber losses a bit, the cost of doing so has been worrisomely high.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yes, net subscriber losses were better,&#8221; Moffet explains. &#8220;But the cost was very high. Post-paid equipment subsidies soared to $139 per subsidized subscriber in Q3 (up 39 percent from last year), as the company recovered just 36 percent of their equipment costs&#8230;.Yesterday&#8217;s results illustrate why it may not be possible for Sprint to have its cake and eat it too. After all the drastic cost cutting, after all the efforts to refresh the product line, after all the price cuts and new pricing plans, Sprint was able to manage only a modest improvement. Not growth, just a slightly slower rate of decline. And that Herculean effort almost broke the bank. The huge costs of even marginally improving gross additions (and the rate of net subscriber loss) crushed margins.&#8221;</p>

Shares in the company spiked more than seven percent after the CLIQ announcement Thursday, and today they’re up well over six percent at $8.49.</p>
<p>Clearly, there’s quite a bit of enthusiasm around the device and its Motoblur feature, which connects a variety of social networking services to the phone&#8217;s core functions.</p>
<p>Said Mark Sue, an analyst at RBC Capital: &#8220;Our initial take is favorable, and it seems that Motorola is carving out a niche in the crowded smartphone market by focusing on socially minded demographics as opposed to enterprise users or pro-sumers. We think it’s a step in the right direction.&#8221;</p>
<p> C.L. King analyst Lawrence Harris was similarly impressed. &#8220;Our initial impression of the CLIQ is that it is not an iPhone killer, but that it will be a contender,&#8221; he said in a research note issued today. &#8220;&#8230;Initial reviews suggest that the CLIQ’s build quality is excellent with a solid keyboard, two important selling points.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Tavis McCourt at Morgan Keegan said the CLIQ is a credible device&#8211;assuming Motorola (MOT) can sell enough of them. &#8220;MOTOBLUR clearly differentiates a Motorola Android-based smartphone from others on the market and provides Motorola a fighting chance at successfully turning around Mobile Devices with Android-based devices,&#8221; he noted today.</p>
<p>“The CLIQ appears to be a solid touch screen smartphone,&#8221; McCourt added, &#8220;but we will defer from offering a more confident opinion until we get a chance to test one and note that we expect the upcoming Motorola Android-based device for Verizon Wireless may be somewhat more impressive. We believe Motorola ultimately needs to sell about 2 million smartphones/quarter in order to become sustainably profitable in its Mobile Devices business.&#8221;</p>
<p>McCourt&#8217;s conclusion: &#8220;Given Motorola&#8217;s global distribution, this does not require a &#8216;home run&#8217; product, but only a series of &#8216;solid&#8217; products. The CLIQ appears to be a good first step in this turnaround.&#8221;</p>

<p>Said Mark Sue, an analyst at RBC Capital: &#8220;Our initial take is favorable, and it seems that Motorola is carving out a niche in the crowded smartphone market by focusing on socially minded demographics as opposed to enterprise users or pro-sumers. We think it’s a step in the right direction.&#8221;</p>
<p> C.L. King analyst Lawrence Harris was similarly impressed. &#8220;Our initial impression of the CLIQ is that it is not an iPhone killer, but that it will be a contender,&#8221; he said in a research note issued today. &#8220;&#8230;Initial reviews suggest that the CLIQ’s build quality is excellent with a solid keyboard, two important selling points.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Tavis McCourt at Morgan Keegan said the CLIQ is a credible device&#8211;assuming Motorola (MOT) can sell enough of them. &#8220;MOTOBLUR clearly differentiates a Motorola Android-based smartphone from others on the market and provides Motorola a fighting chance at successfully turning around Mobile Devices with Android-based devices,&#8221; he noted today. </p>
<p>“The CLIQ appears to be a solid touch screen smartphone,&#8221; McCourt added, &#8220;but we will defer from offering a more confident opinion until we get a chance to test one and note that we expect the upcoming Motorola Android-based device for Verizon Wireless may be somewhat more impressive. We believe Motorola ultimately needs to sell about 2 million smartphones/quarter in order to become sustainably profitable in its Mobile Devices business.&#8221;</p>
<p>McCourt&#8217;s conclusion: &#8220;Given Motorola&#8217;s global distribution, this does not require a &#8216;home run&#8217; product, but only a series of &#8216;solid&#8217; products. The CLIQ appears to be a good first step in this turnaround.&#8221;</p>

In a research note published this morning, CL King analyst Lawrence Harris, speaking to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090724/pre-analysts/">the controversy over sell-though numbers for the Pre</a>, cast his lot with those who feel sales are slowing.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our channel checks suggest sales of the Pre have indeed slowed. Store traffic at Sprint stores has declined since mid-June,&#8221; Harris wrote. &#8220;The Pre, which initially was not available for online purchase from Sprint’s website, became available last week. We believe a majority of the Pre sales have been made either to existing Palm users or Sprint subscribers. It also appears not to have been as successful as the iPhone in terms of winning subscribers from other carriers.&#8221;</p>
<p>Harris notes that even Sprint (S) CEO Dan Hesse seems uncertain of the device’s true impact in the market. Speaking at Fortune’s Brainstorm: Tech conference in Pasadena, Calif., last week, Hesse said of the Pre: &#8220;You won’t know if we have a real hit on our hands until its been out three months, four months, five months&#8230;.It’s too early to tell&#8230;.We’re just getting it rolled out in decent quantities for direct distribution.&#8221;</p>
<p>An interesting admission. That said, the Pre did set record first-day and weekend sales for Sprint, And according to the channel checks of some other analysts, sales are not slowing. Fact is, we won’t know for sure until Palm (PALM) and Sprint go on record with real sales metrics&#8211;as Sprint may do later this week when it reports earnings.</p>
<p>One last point worth noting here: CL King’s note arrives amid widespread reports this morning of a <a href="http://www.precentral.net/best-buy-selling-pre-99-2-year-contract">Best Buy promotion that cut the Pre’s price to $99</a> with a two-year contract. Though the retailer dismissed the cut as an <a href="http://twitter.com/bernierjohn/status/2862349548">&#8220;unintentional pricing error&#8221;</a> and promptly withdrew it, a number of Pres appear to have been <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/07/27/confusion-at-best-buy-over-rumors-of-a-99-palm-pre/">sold at that price across the country.</a></p>
<p>Odd that such an accident would occur nationwide complete with in-store pricing sheets, isn’t it? Makes you wonder if someone jumped the gun on a forthcoming promotion and if we’ll see the Pre at $99 before the end of summer. And if we do, at what price will <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090630/palm-pixie-in-november/">the Eos/Pixie&#8211;the Pre’s rumored little brother</a>&#8211;be sold? $49.99?</p>

<p>And worst of all, two days prior to the announcement of a new $99 price point for the iPhone 3G, a disruptive move that puts the device in reach of far more consumers and allows Apple to position <em>last year’s iPhone</em> as a competitor to this year’s Pre (and BlackBerry Storm too). And unlike this year’s Pre, last year’s iPhone comes with iTunes, a robust developer ecosystem, access to 50,000+ apps and soon iPhone OS 3.0.</p>
<p>And that may bode ill for <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090608/palm-sprint-tells-us-they-have-never-seen-higher-demand-for-a-smartphone/">a hard-to-come-by upstart handset</a> that’ll <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090519/palm-pre-199-after-a-100-rebate-we-hope-you-lose/">set you back $199 after a $100 rebate</a>.</p>
<p>Certainly, a $99 iPhone 3G is a very compelling proposition. Said CL King &#038; Associates analyst Lawrence Harris, &#8220;Apple&#8217;s strategy appears to be designed to take advantage of the current limited availability of the Palm Pre. It is clear that Apple intends to maintain its leadership position in the smartphone market, given its decision to cut prices.&#8221; </p>
<p>Clear too that Palm’s decision to roll out the Pre this past Saturday was folly and has not only left the company’s most important product release in years washed away in a deluge of Apple coverage, but allowed a powerful rival with a lot of market buzz to undercut the price of its bet-the-company handset within just days of its launch.</p>
<p>Sadly for Palm, it may be that the Pre&#8217;s best days are already behind it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s been a bad week for Powerwave (PWAV): The stock is down 38 percent since Friday.</p>
<p>Not a lot of substantive news, but plenty of incremental worry about the state of the communications equipment segment. Powerwave makes power amplifiers and other components for communications gear.</p>
<p>This morning, C.L. King analyst Lawrence Harris trimmed estimates for the company. For 2008, he goes to 16 cents from 17 cents; for 2009, he now sees 30 cents, down from 34 cents. Harris maintains his Accumulate rating and $5 target price on the stock.</p>
<p>Harris notes that the Nokia Siemens infrastructure equipment joint venture today reported revenue for Q3 that was down 14 percent sequentially and 5 percent year-over-year; he notes that Nokia accounts for 28 percent of the company&#8217;s revenue in Q2, and 35 percent in 2007.</p>
