			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The library of the Federal Communications Commission houses plenty of books and newspapers, but it is also home to a growing collection of TVs, smartphones and tablets.</p>
<p>About a year ago, the agency started amassing the latest gadgets in an effort to ensure that its staff is able to try out the technology they are overseeing.</p>
<p>&#8220;You want people writing policies in this area to have hands-on contact,&#8221; FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said in an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120111/fcc-chairman-we-need-that-spectrum-and-we-need-it-now/">interview</a> at January&#8217;s Consumer Electronics Show. Earlier this week, <strong>AllThingsD</strong> got a behind-the-scenes tour of the library.</p>
<p>The gadget room is separated by a glass wall from the more traditional part of the library. Inside are tablets from RIM, Samsung and Apple, as well as phones ranging from the latest Androids to the big-button Jitterbug phone aimed at seniors. There are also 3-D televisions, a Sonos digital audio player and various set-top boxes.</p>
<p>Each of the devices is on loan, with the agency aiming to refresh its collection each month with whatever the latest and greatest devices are. In some cases, the technology arrives in the FCC&#8217;s library even before it goes on sale.</p>
<p>That said, they are still waiting on the new iPad.</p>

<p>The device library is the FCC&#8217;s effort to deal with the fact that its workers can&#8217;t afford to buy all of the latest products, nor are they allowed to accept them for free, due to ethics rules. But, at the same time, they really need to be familiar with what&#8217;s out there, in order to make smart policies.</p>
<p>Genachowski and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100922/fcc-to-rebuild-using-drupal/">the agency&#8217;s previous managing director</a>, former Microsoft executive Steven VanRoekel, were two of the key figures behind the library. VanRoekel is <a href="http://www.cio.gov/profile/VanRoekel-Steven.cfm">now the federal government&#8217;s chief information officer</a>.</p>
<p>In addition to its standard collection, the agency also organizes special events around specific topics, such as public-safety technology or accessible products for people with disabilities. </p>
<p>With some of the special exhibits, the agency lets things spill over into the main library. In the case of the public-safety collection, things even spilled into the streets, as FCC staffers got a look at in-car technology and even a hot air balloon that could be used to send up new wireless infrastructure in the event of a natural disaster.</p>
<p>For now, workers can only play around with the products inside the library itself, though Genachowski would like to see it expand further.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our goal is to have it be a lending library,&#8221; he said.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While many libraries lend out electronic books for those who already have a tablet or e-reader, a Wisconsin library is cranking the digital lending up a notch.</p>

<p>The Eau Claire, Wis., library is <a href="http://www.ecpubliclibrary.info/services/library-services/ipads.html">lending out iPads</a>. Some of the iPads are loaned for a week at a time, while others are offered for four hours at a time for use within the libary. Each tablet is loaded with 1,000 books and 10 audiobooks, as well as various apps and Web site links. In all, the library has 44 iPads to lend.</p>
<p>&#8220;The goal of the iPads program is to first introduce our customers to a new technology they haven’t used,” library director John Stoneberg <a href="http://www.weau.com/news/headlines/Eau_Claire_library_launches_iPad_lending_program__130307403.html"> told TV station WEAU.</a> “Since we are the first public library, if not the first library in the United States to lend out iPads, it’s been a challenge but it’s been exciting.&#8221;</p>
<p>The library got a foundation grant to help pay for the tablets and said it chose the iPad from among the digital options because of its versatility.</p>
<p>&#8220;While there are many devices competing for the attention of the library customer, no single device can fulfill every need. The iPad was chosen for this project because of its place as a tablet computer marketplace leader and its flexibility in providing more access to library-related content than an e-reader-only device,&#8221; the library said in a <a href="http://www.ecpubliclibrary.info/images/services/iPads/iPoints.pdf">document outlining the program</a>.</p>
<p>Libraries have been going digital for some time, adding a variety of digital media to their physical and virtual shelves, as well as offering Internet access to patrons. On Wednesday, Amazon announced that its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110921/amazon-rolls-out-kindle-library-lending/">Kindle devices can now be used to read e-books checked out from libraries</a>, joining similar programs available to Nook and Sony Reader owners.</p>
<p><strong>Update:</strong> The folks at the Eau Claire Library, valuing preciseness, wanted us to know that they said they were one of the first, if not the first libraries to offer iPad checkouts. They said they have since heard from the Mentor Public Library in Ohio and Darien Library in Connecticut that both also offer iPad checkouts, though on a smaller scale.</p>

<p>Last week, OverDrive Inc. released OverDrive Media Console for the iPad, a free app from Apple&#8217;s App Store. With the app, you can now borrow eBooks for reading on the go with a tablet.</p>

<p>You can already borrow an eBook from a library using an eReader, including the Sony Reader and Barnes &amp; Noble Nook, but you&#8217;ll need a PC and a USB cable for downloading and synching. Amazon&#8217;s Kindle doesn&#8217;t allow borrowing eBooks from libraries.</p>
<p>For the past week, I borrowed and wirelessly downloaded digital books onto tablets primarily using OverDrive, the largest distributor of eBooks for libraries. I tested the OverDrive Media Console for the iPad. I also used the Dell Streak 7 tablet to test the app on the Android operating system; this app also works on Android smartphones. An iPhone app is available. </p>
<p>Before you go hunting for your library card, there are a few factors to consider. While there are positives to borrowing eBooks from a library, the process has significant limitations that can be frustrating.</p>
<p>The biggest upside, of course: They&#8217;re free. In comparison, digital bookstore apps like Amazon&#8217;s Kindle, Apple&#8217;s iBooks and the Barnes &amp; Noble Nook app charge around $10 a book. Local libraries pay for licenses to each eBook just like they pay for each physical book. Lending periods vary among libraries, from seven to 21 days, and some libraries let patrons set due dates. Fines or late fees are nonexistent because digital access to the books expires on a set due date, at which point titles lock up and users are prompted to delete the titles.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a major downside to borrowing digital books. If the book you want is checked out, you still have to wait until someone returns it to borrow it. OverDrive&#8217;s licenses allow one book copy per person, so several people can&#8217;t simultaneously borrow the same eBook. Libraries can buy several licenses for a title so they can have multiple copies of popular books for borrowing. I found seven eBook copies of &#8220;The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo&#8221; in my Washington, D.C., public library system.</p>

<p>But the OverDrive interface showed me that most of the books I wanted to read were checked out, and in several cases, there were other patrons on a waiting list for the copies. While &#8220;The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo&#8221; had seven copies, it also had seven patrons waiting for copies of the book. The idea of waiting for a book with many people lined up to borrow it is enough to inspire even some of the most frugal readers to cough up the dough to buy digital books. Just like with &#8220;real&#8221; library books, checked-out eBooks shouldn&#8217;t impact sales of eBooks.</p>
<p>An OverDrive spokesman says, &#8220;Libraries set the number of titles that can be checked out by each cardholder at any one time. That number varies from library to library, and the average is about five titles across our network.&#8221;</p>
<p>Book selection is also a challenge. According to fiscal records, my library&#8217;s physical book collection numbers well over two million books, while its OverDrive titles total about 11,000 eBooks. And only a portion of those were in the EPUB format, which is the only format that works with the Android, iPhone and the iPad apps. That meant the selection for me is pretty small. Smaller libraries have even fewer eBooks from which to choose. Users can&#8217;t borrow digital content from libraries where they don&#8217;t have library cards.</p>
<p>Many of my book searches showed the that my library didn&#8217;t have a digital copy of the incredibly popular &#8220;Team of Rivals&#8221; by Doris Kearns Goodwin, or even anything by the popular mystery novelist, Mary Higgins Clark. I tried entering broader terms into the OverDrive search box and didn&#8217;t have much luck then either: The term &#8220;London&#8221; only returned two results.</p>
<p>According to a spokesman, the D.C. library system has more than 25,000 eBook titles, including the OverDrive offerings, and &#8220;will be adding new titles in EPUB format weekly as new titles are released and to meet demand.&#8221;</p>
<p>Part of the selection problem, of course, is that many libraries are new to the eBook borrowing experience and are in the midst of building up digital collections. </p>
<p>Since availability is a problem, it would make sense that users could view books by seeing just those books that are available for borrowing. But OverDrive lacks this feature, so users are stuck searching for—or scrolling through—titles over and over again only to find that they&#8217;re already checked out by other people. After a dozen searches like this, I was ready to give up. </p>
<p>The OverDrive spokesman said a feature that sorts books to display only those available will be out sometime this year. He noted that several libraries are increasing their eBook catalogs to adjust to increasing demand from tablet users.</p>
<p>But the process for selecting and downloading books is clumsy. After choosing the correct local library, the OverDrive app sends the user out into the tablet&#8217;s Web browser to find books in the library&#8217;s system. OverDrive&#8217;s spokesman said this preserves library branding but that, in the future, this selection process will be in the app.</p>
<p>To download and read the EPUB formatted book, you must sign in with an Adobe ID. This is in addition to entering your library card number. I had one of these IDs from past use of Adobe products, but many people won&#8217;t and will groan over this extra registration step. </p>
<p>Actually checking out a book, takes very little time. After all, these files contain only text, not large video or audio files. Since I had trouble finding books to download, I settled on a romance novel featured on OverDrive&#8217;s homepage titled &#8220;Hawk&#8217;s Way: Rebels&#8221; by Joan Johnston. It took less than 30 seconds to download to my iPad. </p>
<p>Once downloaded, books looked fine on the iPad and Dell Streak. The screen&#8217;s brightness can be adjusted using an on-screen slider and a handy navigation strip at the bottom of each page shows where you are in a book and how many pages remain in the currently opened chapter. Publishers can set the number of font sizes to which text can be adjusted. And with the app, text can&#8217;t be displayed like pages in a real book (with two columns of text on two pages opened in front of you) when the tablet is held horizontally. </p>
<p>OverDrive doesn&#8217;t enable synchronizing of material across multiple devices, like Amazon&#8217;s Kindle app does with Whispersync. So if I download a book on my iPad in the OverDrive app, I can&#8217;t open that book on an Android phone or desktop using OverDrive. </p>
<p>OverDrive serves more than 13,000 libraries with a catalog of 400,000 titles from 1,000 publishers, but it&#8217;s possible your library may not use this system (check OverDrive.com for participating libraries). The spokesman said the company plans an app for the BlackBerry by June and hopes to enable wireless downloads on other devices in the future.</p>

<p>Then again, it&#8217;s been headed that way for quite some time&#8211;it&#8217;s just that News Corp. (which also owns this Web site) is now being that much more forthright about it. News Corp. COO Chase Carey said today that the company is &#8220;actively engaged&#8221; in discussions about &#8220;strategic alternatives&#8221;.</p>
<p>Which is <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/01/13/us-myspace-idUSTRE70A4Q720110113">exactly what the company said a few weeks ago</a>, shortly after <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110110/myspace-plans-to-lay-off-550-to-600-employees-tomorrow/">laying off several hundred workers</a>.</p>
<p>The only difference today was that Carey said it in an earnings call, not via a public relations proxy, and it seemed clear from his tone that the company is done with the social network.</p>
<p>When an analyst asked about his projections for Myspace&#8217;s losses for the remainder of the year, you could hear the surprise in his voice, when he reiterated that the &#8220;focus is on strategic options.&#8221; And asked again about timing for a decision, he said that the company was &#8220;actively engaged&#8221; in discussions.</p>
<p>That is: <em>Make us an offer</em>.</p>
<p>For the record, News Corp.&#8217;s $275 million charge on its digital operations, announced today, breaks down this way: $107 million of that is for the restructuring, and the remaining $168 million is a writedown, presumably focused on Myspace.</p>
<p>And for those who care, costs for the Daily are being assigned to News Corp.&#8217;s publishing group: $7 million of the $30 million it has spent so far were assigned to this quarter.</p>
<p>EARLIER:</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an all-News Corp. kind of day around here. Jumping on the company&#8217;s earnings call, where we&#8217;re certain to hear about the just-launched Daily tablet newspaper, along with details about the company&#8217;s <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110202/news-corp-faces-the-myspace-music-with-a-big-writedown/">$275 million writedown</a> on its digital businesses.</p>
<p>(Once again: News Corp. also owns this Web site. I don&#8217;t think we&#8217;ll get mentioned during the call, though.)</p>
<p><strong>4:34 pm</strong>: And we&#8217;re off. Here&#8217;s the link to <a href="http://www.newscorp.com/investor/download/NWS_Q2_2011.pdf">News Corp.&#8217;s earnings release</a>, so you can play along at home.</p>
<p><strong>4:35 pm</strong>: On the call: COO Chase Carey and CFO Dave DeVoe. No Rupert Murdoch, which is odd since he appeared happy to answer questions this morning during the Daily unveiling.</p>
<p><strong>4:36 pm</strong>: Carey on that digital charge. Also included in that number, if I understood him correctly: Losses from sale of Jamba, FAN digital display network.</p>
<p><strong>4:39 pm</strong>: Now time for some context: Cable is doing nicely, as it always does for News Corp. Ad sales up 17 percent, affiliate fees up 11 percent. And that includes the one-month blackout we had with EchoStar, which cost us about $30. million.</p>
<p><strong>4:39 pm</strong>: Film: We&#8217;re down, but part of that is because we had a great quarter a year ago, comparatively. But &#8220;Black Swan&#8221; is great!</p>
<p><strong>4:40 pm</strong>: TV: Up, due in part because of political ads. NFL ratings and prices are up, which is good because the World Series wasn&#8217;t as good as it could have been.</p>
<p><strong>4:41 pm</strong>: [If you're interested in News Corp.'s satellite business, I'll direct you to the earnings report. Back shortly.]</p>
<p><strong>4:42 pm</strong>: Publishing: Down from last year. Advertising is up across the board, but Harper Collins is down, and we invested in the Daily [so that $30 million charge is *not* included in the $275 million?]</p>
<p><strong>4:43 pm</strong>: &#8220;Other&#8221;: Pretty much Myspace at this point, which is a mess. A loss of $156 million, which is $31 million worse than last year. Myspace results are &#8220;worse than our expectations.&#8221;</p>
<p>[Apologies, that was DeVoe.THIS is Carey:]</p>
<p><strong>4:44 pm</strong>: Ad markets up at all our cable businesses, but we&#8217;re not dependent on that, because we have this great revenue stream from subscriber fees.</p>
<p>Fox News beat all other news networks combined. It&#8217;s the No. 4 channel in basic cable. All our affiliate deals are coming up, and we&#8217;re going to get a lot more from the cable and satellite guys for the rights to that channel.</p>
<p><strong>4:47 pm</strong>: Ad market strong for broadcast, too. &#8220;Absolutely thrilled&#8221; with &#8220;American Idol&#8221;&#8216;s performance. Fox Sports doing great, too. NFL was best ever, and Super Bowl will be great. NASCAR may be down a bit, though.</p>
<p>And don&#8217;t forget that we&#8217;re now starting to get paid by cable guys for our Fox broadcast, too, which they used to get for free. &#8220;We&#8217;ll be taking this business to a whole new level of profitability.&#8221; Will generate $1 billion annual operating income in a couple of years.</p>
<p><strong>4:50 pm</strong>: [Satellite talk, which makes me drowsy yet again.]</p>
<p><strong>4:51 pm</strong>: TV studios doing great. Making a pile from &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; reruns. &#8220;Glee&#8221; a money maker, too.</p>
<p>Film studios not as strong this year, but that&#8217;s the nature of the business.</p>
<p>And don&#8217;t forget &#8220;Avatar&#8221; 2 and 3!</p>
<p><strong>4:52 pm</strong>: On the Daily: Rupert is still giving briefings on this as we speak&#8211;exactly the kind of thing we should be doing.</p>
<p>On Myspace: Completed &#8220;rebuild&#8221; of business, and &#8220;right-sized it.&#8221; And &#8220;now is the right time for News Corp. to consider strategic options for the business&#8230;and we&#8217;re &#8220;evaluating strategic alternatives.&#8221;</p>
<p>Time for Q&#038;A: First question was about retrans fees, which I missed. But retrans worth &#8220;hundreds of millions of dollars.&#8221; Carey says.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Color on ad market, please.</strong></p>
<p>Carey: &#8220;It&#8217;s really good, solid growth&#8221; across all platforms. Print not as much as TV, but everything&#8217;s strong.</p>
<p><strong>Q: What do you think of TV Everywhere?</strong></p>
<p>Carey: &#8220;I prefer to call it &#8220;authentication.&#8221; But &#8220;it&#8217;s a good thing&#8230;it&#8217;s struggled to get going&#8221; because cable systems have been resistant. But &#8220;at the end of the day, success has got to be built on making it a good experience for consumers or they&#8217;ll find another way&#8230;.At the end of the day, consumers are going to migrate&#8221; to good experiences. &#8220;It hasn&#8217;t gotten very far.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: More on authentication, please.</strong></p>
<p>Carey: I don&#8217;t think that the right way to do this is to say, &#8220;You can watch something on cablecompany.com or Fox.com&#8221;&#8211;you should be able to watch it when you want, where you want.</p>
<p>[A lot of "you know"s in Carey's last answer.]</p>
<p><strong>Q: Please talk about how you will monetize Fox content. Disney just did a Netflix deal, and most of that value comes from ABC content. What do you think about doing something similar, and making old shows available online, and do you think &#8220;Modern Family&#8221;&#8216;s value has decreased because of online exposure, as Turner said?</strong></p>
<p>A: Two different values&#8211;delayed access to current content, and library content, which is what Netflix is doing. Netflix is competing for library rights, generally. We&#8217;re a buyer&#8211;at FX&#8211;and as buyer, I wouldn&#8217;t want to pay a lot of money for syndicated TV and have it also show up at 20 million homes at Netflix. In general, TV businesses have been selling their product too cheaply. &#8220;We need to make sure we&#8217;re getting fair value for our product, no matter what the distribution channel is.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>5:06 pm: Q: What about moving up windows, etc. for video on demand?</strong></p>
<p>Carey: Creating an early window &#8220;is very important for us.&#8221; Getting that window properly priced is important, and I think you&#8217;ll see people moving forward with it in the first half of this year.</p>
<p>[Sorry missed a question, and next one is about satellites. Even Carey is yawning as he answers.]</p>
<p><strong>Q: What are your expectations for Myspace losses for the year &#8220;or earnings&#8221;?</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Focus is on strategic options&#8221; [as in, who cares? We're selling this dog. Do you have a dollar?]</p>
<p><strong>Q: How does Hulu fit into your vision about monetizing content at Fox, etc.? Also, what&#8217;s up with TV syndication dollars? Still strong? If so, why?</strong></p>
<p>A: &#8220;Hulu&#8230;they&#8217;ve done a great job.&#8221; Glad they&#8217;d doing subscriptions. And &#8220;I think the digital marketplace is going to continue to evolve&#8230;not going to speak for their strategy&#8221; etc. [i.e., non-answer].&#8221;</p>
<p>Meanwhile, &#8220;TV continues to prove itself&#8230;as second to none&#8221; in terms of value to consumers, advertisers.</p>
<p><strong>Q: What are economics of the Daily? When will you break even, and what does it mean for newspaper strategy in general?</strong></p>
<p>Carey: &#8220;The Daily is not a newspaper. It&#8217;s a news product&#8221; so don&#8217;t think about it as part of our newspaper business, or part of our television business.</p>
<p>By the way, we should do that with all brands and content. Not ruling out the Web, but for us, the digital play is figuring out how to leverage &#8220;the content brands that we have.&#8221; And digital is great because &#8220;for a pretty modest investment&#8221; you can create great stuff.</p>
<p>Five hours into our launch, I won&#8217;t talk about breaking even.</p>
<p>DeVoe: Like we said, we spent $30 million so far, and another $500 thousand a week going forward.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Your prices and subscriptions for digital are based on household, not per connected device &#8211; ie, charge familes more, single people less. Wouldn&#8217;t that cut down on piracy, too?</strong></p>
<p>Carey: DirectTV does charge per box, actually, and I think cable guys are doing that too, based on number of TVs. But &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure there&#8217;s a lot of upside&#8221; in that for cable networks, etc.</p>

<p>That and the new investment giving SnagFilms a valuation of $50 million should be big news at the 11th Sundance Film Festival, the famous independent film gathering opening in Park City, Utah, on Thursday.</p>
<p>And SnagFilms also announced that well-known industry exec Bingham Ray is joining the start-up to spearhead its distribution of fictional narrative and foreign-produced independent films.</p>
<p>The service, unlike the subscription-based video giant Netflix, currently distributes free non-fiction documentary films with advertising, as well as offers rental streaming and purchase options.</p>
<p>And it is profitable, said Ted Leonsis, the former AOL exec who is the founder and has been the driving investor in SnagFilms.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was always my personal frustration as a backer of documentaries that you could not get distribution far and wide,&#8221; he said in an interview earlier today.</p>
<p>He noted that while Netflix is really now focused on big studio fare, &#8220;what we&#8217;ve discovered is a big supply of independent video that has never seen light of day, but that has a big audience.&#8221;</p>
<p>SnagFilms&#8217; strategy is to give broader reach to these films, which often don&#8217;t even have a theatrical opening&#8211;or, if they do, are very small.</p>
<p>Along with its site, which digitizes the films and adds advertising to them, <a href="http://www.snagfilms.com">SnagFilms</a> also encourages Web sites and others to grab films and create a &#8220;virtual movie theater.&#8221; (You can see my effort below.)</p>
<p>It also has video-on-demand deals with Comcast, Verizon and more, as well as purchase options with Apple&#8217;s iTunes and others.</p>
<p>Earlier this month, SnagFilms also launched an impressive and free iPad full-movie-watching app.</p>
<p>SnagFilms also owns a popular news site called indieWIRE, which covers the independent film market, and the new funding will also be used to expand it.</p>
<p>That market has been in need of a boost of some kind, since it has been struggling as financing has dried up for the production of quality documentaries and outside-the-Hollywood-machine movies.</p>
<p>It has long been hoped that the Internet would perhaps save and strengthen the genre, with its supposed long-tail magic.</p>
<p>But the going has been slow. Currently, SnagFilms has 2,000 films in its online library, although Leonsis said the aim is to use the new funds to get 10,000 films on the service as soon as possible.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to build a beachhead in the independent film world,&#8221; he said of SnagFilms, which currently has about 40 employees in Washington, D.C., and New York. &#8220;We think we have a niche and video is the killer app on Web now.&#8221;</p>
<p>Leonsis, who has backed such notable documentaries as &#8220;The Rape of Nanking,&#8221; said NEA&#8217;s Peter Barris will join the board, along with existing investor Steve Case.</p>
<p>Case and Leonsis, of course, were the dynamic duo of AOL&#8217;s glory days.</p>
<p>So, I am rooting for another win in an arena that needs it.</p>

<p>While the news has been be out there for a month, Miramax officially confirmed this morning that former News Corp. exec Mike Lang was named CEO of the Hollywood movie company.</p>
<p>What will be interesting about that for digital content players will be to see exactly what the man who was deeply involved in deals to buy the Myspace social networking site and also create the Hulu premium video service will do with Miramax&#8217;s rich trove of more than 700 award-winning films, including &#8220;Shakespeare in Love&#8221; and &#8220;Pulp Fiction,&#8221; in its movie library.</p>
<p>Lang left his post as EVP of business development and strategy at Fox Entertainment, including its film studio, broadcast network, sports and cable channel, earlier this year.</p>
<p>BoomTown spoke to him last night about his new job, which came after he advised the group that finally won Miramax&#8211;Filmyard Holdings.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are trying to take this company to the next level by exploring not only our traditional options, but our digital ones,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Miramax will not be aggressive in making new movies, but in taking advantage of the sequel rights it has to a number of hits, as well as the existing movies, which include four of the last 15 Best Picture Oscar winners.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our strategy is still emerging, but we want to exploit our assets in a variety of ways,&#8221; said Lang, who noted that could include everything from subscription deals with online video services, such as Netflix and Amazon, to digital content lockers in the cloud.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want people to be able to access our content across multiple medias,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;ll take any payment, of course, but we also have to be smart about how we do these things.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lang, who has always had a foot in both worlds, said he thinks that digital media could develop similarly to the way traditional media has.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no reason to think that digital will not emulate older media, with different windows in which subscribers watch content,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>But, said Lang, he also thinks there is still life in physical media, such as Blu-ray players.</p>
<p>Since the deal just closed with former Miramax owner Disney, there are no employees yet for the Santa Monica, Calif.-based company.</p>
<p>But once he staffs up, Langs said he hopes to present a different picture of Hollywood to the digerati than the more typical wary hostility.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our goal really is we want to send a signal that we are a different company,&#8221; said Lang. &#8220;Not only about digital, but in being an innovative company.&#8221;</p>

<p>Lang, 45, most recently served as a consultant to Filmyard in its acquisition of Miramax. Prior to that, he was EVP, Business Development and Strategy at Fox Entertainment, responsible for strategic initiatives across News Corp.’s entertainment assets, including Fox’s film studio, broadcast network, sports and cable channels. Lang played key roles in the acquisition of MySpace and the formation of the MySpace Music joint venture, and he led the creation of Hulu, with major broadcast partners. In addition, Lang was involved in Fox’s mobile, digital and video game initiatives. He joined Fox in 2004.</p>
<p>Prior to Fox, Lang served as a consultant on media-related investments. In the late &#8217;90s, he was a founding executive of Z.com. Lang began his career at The Walt Disney Company in Strategic Planning. Lang earned his MBA with high distinction at Harvard Business School and he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Claremont McKenna College.</p></blockquote>

What did it get for its money?</p>
<p>A lot of video! AOL says that 5Min&#8217;s library and distribution deals, along with its existing video offering, gave it a total of 493 million video streams in October. Which is a pretty big number&#8211;and <a href="http://comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2010/11/comScore_Releases_October_2010_U.S._Online_Video_Rankings?">bigger than any other U.S. Web property except for Google&#8217;s YouTube</a>.</p>
<p>Comparing AOL&#8217;s homegrown video with the stuff that 5Min offers&#8211;content other publishers (including CBS, Hearst and Scripps Networks) make that it syndicates out&#8211;isn&#8217;t apples and apples: Different video has different costs, and the amount AOL will be able to get for the stuff will vary widely depending on the property it runs on, and the real estate it gets there.</p>
<p>But making all of that work will now be Ran Harnevo&#8217;s responsibility. Harnevo ran 5Min up until the sale, and he has now been named senior vice president of AOL Video, a unit that didn&#8217;t exist prior to the deal. Harnevo will report to AOL content boss David Eun; he says that all 45 of his former 5Min employees are staying on at AOL, too.</p>
<p>Near term: Expect to hear more from the company about other partnerships designed to get high-quality video on the site, along the lines of deals it has already announced with Next New Networks, Vuguru and Electus.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Book lovers nowadays fall into one of two camps: They either eschew e-readers altogether, preferring the look and feel of print books; or they dive wholeheartedly into e-books, instantly downloading and racing through more titles by the handfuls. If you count yourself in the latter category, you&#8217;re in luck. </p>

<p>Starting this week, Barnes &#038; Noble will ship its $249 Nook Color (<a href="http://nookcolor.com">nookcolor.com</a>), a luxury model in the e-reader world currently dominated by the $139 monochrome Amazon.com Kindle. While the original Nook offered a gray-scale reading screen and a thin, color touch strip for browsing the bookstore, this model is one big color touch screen. It connects to the Web using only Wi-Fi and costs $100 more than last year&#8217;s comparable Wi-Fi Nook, but a Barnes &#038; Noble spokeswoman said that preorders online and in stores are far exceeding company expectations, with over twice as many as for last year&#8217;s Nook. </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Nook Color over the past week and I like its book-size build and stylish design. Its user interface is inviting and its digital bookstore is redesigned to make shopping for books enjoyable. Nook Color is aimed at people who are primarily focused on reading but crave the iPad&#8217;s color and some of its versatility. </p>
<p>Like the Kindle, the Nook Color has a Web browser and some apps but no dedicated email program or way to access an app store. A spokeswoman for Barnes &#038; Noble says a full email program and app store are expected early next year. </p>
<p>The Nook Color is unapologetically focused on reading. It accesses Barnes &#038; Noble&#8217;s library of two million downloadable books and over 100 magazines and newspapers (fewer were available during my pre-release testing). The reader has a feature called ArticleView that displays magazine articles in a clear, readable format. You can highlight passages from books and then share them with friends through Facebook, Twitter or a limited, in-book email system. A LendMe feature gives users an easy way to digitally lend their books to friends for 14 days. And for kids, there&#8217;s a feature where popular stories are read aloud by people rather than a computer voice.</p>
<p>The Nook Color is more than just a bright, color screen: It&#8217;s built on the Android 2.1 operating system—the same mobile OS used to run many smartphones. This gives the device access to a full Web browser for tasks like reading favorite sites or checking Facebook, which I did easily. Early next year Nook Color will upgrade to Android 2.2, allowing it to play Flash videos. </p>

<p>Eight apps found in a section called Extras come loaded on the device including apps for Pandora Internet Radio, chess and Sudoku. I logged into my Pandora account, quickly retrieved my saved list of stations and played a QuickMix of music. I was able to work on a crossword puzzle or read a book or magazine on the Nook Color while still listening to Rihanna on the music app. Quickoffice software for Word, Excel and PowerPoint comes built into the Nook Color so users can view—but not edit—documents in these programs if they&#8217;re loaded onto the device with a MicroSD card. Until the Nook Color&#8217;s app store launches early next year, there&#8217;s no way to download free or paid apps. </p>
<p>Navigating around the Nook Color is a cinch. A tiny &#8220;n&#8221; just below the screen returns you to the home screen, which can be customized with photos loaded via a MicroSD card. The Daily Shelf is a dedicated horizontal section at the bottom of the home screen that updates whenever possible with new versions of newspapers (daily), magazines (weekly or monthly, if you subscribe) or books lent to you by friends. Anything on the Daily Shelf can be dragged out onto the home screen, placed anywhere and resized by pinching two fingers out or together. A Quick Nav button displays the Nook Color&#8217;s six sections: Library, Shop, Search, Extras, Web and Settings. A helpful &#8220;Keep Reading&#8221; prompt at the top of the home screen shows the last thing you were reading; selecting it sends you to right where you left off. </p>
<p>Nook Color weighs just under a pound, or twice as much as the  Kindle but still a half-pound lighter than Apple&#8217;s larger iPad. It felt a bit heavy in my hands as I read from it for a long period of time, but I solved that by leaning it against a desk or pillow.</p>
<p>While reading Stacy Schiff&#8217;s &#8220;Cleopatra: A Life,&#8221; I found a particularly interesting tidbit about first-century B.C. marriage contracts requiring wives to vow not to add love potions to their husbands&#8217; food or drink. I highlighted this passage by tapping once on the screen and dragging highlighter handles around it, and then sent it to friends via email with a built-in shortcut for sharing through email, Facebook or Twitter. I selected another passage and posted it on my Facebook wall for friends to read. All these posts had links to buy books from Barnes &#038; Noble.</p>
<p>I really enjoyed reading magazines on the Nook Color because these appeared much as they do in print. Brightly colored pages appeared one at a time when I held the device vertically, or two pages at a time in horizontal view. Magazines can be bought per issue or via subscriptions; a single current issue of House Beautiful was $4.50 or $1.99 with a subscription. The Quick Nav button works in magazines, too, so you can flick a finger right or left to skip ahead to specific sections or articles. </p>
<p>If you love reading and want to share your books with friends or reading updates with social networks, the Nook Color has you covered. It will also give you a taste of  tablet computing with functions like browsing the Web, using some apps and eventually, full emailing. Just remember that Nook Color is laser-focused on e-reading. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.aro.com/join-our-beta/">Aro Mobile</a> on Tuesday will be presenting at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. The company makes a set of search-driven mobile apps for Android that link together so they can be more useful. (It is still in private beta, but as of tomorrow those who sign up on the waiting list will get in more quickly.)</p>
<p>After analyzing your address book, emails (only Gmail and Google Apps for now), calendar and other information you give it, Aro compiles a linked library of topics and people that are relevant to you. Then it uses that information to help you complete actions that usually are tedious on a smartphone because they require users to open all sorts of different apps.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-403" title="5AroCompanyQuickActionMenu" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/5AroCompanyQuickActionMenu.png" alt="" width="209" height="345" />Say you&#8217;re using the Aro mail client: Any name that&#8217;s mentioned in an email will be highlighted in a bubble that you can click on to see all the people by that name in your address book and call one directly. You can also search through all your correspondence with that person over time, through various email addresses and phone numbers.</p>
<p>Or if someone schedules an appointment with you and you view it in Aro, you can add it to your calendar from within email, look up more information and get directions to the location right there.</p>
<p>Aro synchs all this information back to the original hosts of your email and calendar, though you don&#8217;t ever have to open the old apps on your phone.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been trying Aro for the last couple of days and I can start to see the potential. However, it&#8217;s pretty awkward to have the Aro parallel experience layered on top of everything I&#8217;m used to doing. My existing phone, email, SMS, address book, calendar and mobile browser apps are now all redundant with Aro versions. The simple action of making a phone call on my setup now requires clicking through an Aro dialog, then a Google Voice dialog&#8211;it&#8217;s a little too much.</p>
<p>These tools would be much more awesome if they were more tightly integrated into the operating system itself rather than as a whole bunch of apps. Aro CEO Jon Lazarus says he&#8217;s working to strike deals with carriers and handset partners to release phones with tighter Aro integration, which would help a lot.</p>
<p>Playing around with Aro makes me think about the potential for a smarter mobile phone that combines Aro-integrated apps with something like Siri&#8217;s voice-activated commands. <a href="http://siri.com/">Siri</a>, <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090528/d7-tech-demo-siri/">which launched at <strong>D7</strong></a> and was <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100428/apple-snags-siri/">bought by Apple</a>, is a virtual personal assistant iPhone app that helps users tie into a whole bunch of Web services to do things like make reservations at nearby restaurants. You can start to imagine how a phone would understand a lot more about its owner, and actually help get things done.</p>
<p>Seattle-based Aro, whose parent company is called <a href="http://www.kiha.com/">Kiha</a>, has raised more than $20 million over the past three years from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen (the company was originally developing for Windows Mobile, actually, but it switched to Android last year). Aro <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/26/aro-mobile-wants-to-simplify-your-mobile-phone/">came out of stealth</a> only a few weeks ago <a href="http://scobleizer.com/2010/10/25/first-look-at-aro-another-example-of-why-chaos-on-android-is-good/">in the run-up</a> to Web 2.0. Here&#8217;s a (somewhat cheesy, yes) demo video of how it works:</p>

<p>Yahoo is debuting a new offering for its hundreds of million of users, which takes the Demand Media model and notches up the volume by presumably allowing a thousand flowers to bloom.</p>
<p>Or, more to the point, blab.</p>
<p>The Internet giant is &#8220;inviting people to contribute to many of its most popular sites with the launch of the Yahoo Contributor Network, a new platform for people to publish their creative content on Yahoo!.&#8221;</p>
<p>This all comes out of its recent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100518/yahoo-snaps-up-associated-content-for-90-million-to-counter-aol-and-demand-media">acquisition of Associated Content</a>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an interesting gambit, since everyone is already yammering away like mad on Facebook.</p>
<p>But Yahoo is trying to put a spin on it by using its copious content assets as inspiration for consumers, and which the Silicon Valley social networking giant does not have.</p>
<p><em>Yet!</em></p>
<p>(By the way, Mao Tse-Tung&#8217;s whole phrase in his famous speech was: &#8220;Let a thousand flowers bloom, a hundred schools of thought contend.&#8221; After that happened all over the place, a brutal crackdown was then initiated.)</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s hope Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz does not do that, but here is the company&#8217;s official press release:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here&#8217;s the official press release announcing <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100927/heres-a-deal-that-is-happening-aol-buying-web-video-distributor-5min/">AOL&#8217;s acquisition of 5Min Media</a>. Sources familiar with the transaction tell me it&#8217;s an all-cash deal at the high end of the $50 million to $65 million range I reported earlier today. So let&#8217;s call it $65 million.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a nice outcome for 5Min&#8217;s team, and for its investors, who put in $13 million, including Globespan Capital Partners and Spark Capital. (I mistakenly identified Scott Kurnit as an angel investor in the company. He was not.) Interesting that AOL (AOL), which has extensive reach already, felt it needed to invest in a distribution play, but you can read CEO Tim Armstrong&#8217;s explanation below.</p>
<p>And perhaps someone can ask him about it if he makes another <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100927/the-pros-and-cons-of-a-techcrunchaol-deal/">acquisition announcement</a> in the near future.</p>

<p>5min Media is the world’s leading video syndication network with a library of more than 200,000 categorized, tagged and rated videos from more than 1,000 of the world&#8217;s largest media companies and professional independent video producers.  Founded in 2006 and headquartered in New York City with offices in Tel Aviv, 5min Media has been named the largest U.S. independent video property by comScore, with more than 20 million unique viewers and more than 130 million video streams (including ad and content videos) in the U.S. in August 2010.  5min Media’s growing network of 800 partner sites allows content creators to reach this audience of targeted viewers across 21 different verticals, including six verticals – Home, Food, Beauty / Fashion, Health, Travel and Pets – that lead their categories, according to comScore Video Metrix, August 2010. <p>Here&#8217;s a deal we can confirm: AOL is buying Web video start-up <a href="http://www.5min.com/">5Min Media</a>.</p>
<p>The price for the deal is between $50 million and $65 million, sources close to the situation said. AOL (AOL) plans to announce the deal Tuesday morning. UPDATE: <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100928/aol-officially-adds-5min-to-its-roster-next/">Here&#8217;s the press release</a>.</p>
<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090723/another-bet-on-video-how-to-startup-5min-raises-75-million">5Min has raised some $13 million in three years</a>, and last spring CEO Ran Harnevo told me he was being offered the chance to raise more money at very attractive valuations.</p>
<p>The deal is at least part of AOL&#8217;s secret video strategy&#8211;<a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100922/tim-armstrong-wont-talk-about-aols-secret-video-plans/">the one that CEO Tim Armstrong acknowledged, but wouldn&#8217;t disclose</a>&#8211;earlier this month.</p>
<p>5Min is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/5min-media-2010-4">a video middleman</a>: It takes video clips that other people make and distributes them to other people&#8217;s Web sites. It says it has a library of 200,000 clips that generate 110 million views a month across 800 partner sites.</p>
<p>The videos come from people you&#8217;ve never heard of, and those you have, including CBS (CBS), Hearst and Scripps Networks. 5Min isn&#8217;t focused on getting the clips on Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube&#8211;it&#8217;s trying to strike deals with conventional publishers that don&#8217;t have video, but would like some.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t know whether 5Min&#8217;s deals allow it to retain distribution rights if it gets acquired, but I&#8217;m guessing that they do. Otherwise, 5Min is a much less attractive acquisition.</p>
<p>But in any case, you can see how the company would fit together with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100125/aol-cto-cahill-out-as-it-buys-a-video-platform-company-and-opens-a-ny-tech-center/">StudioNow</a>, the video-creation platform AOL bought for $36.5 million earlier this year.</p>
<p>The first deal gives AOL a way to make lots of videos at low cost; the second gives it the ability to distribute those clips widely. At the right price, it&#8217;s not a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100927/the-pros-and-cons-of-a-techcrunchaol-deal/">head-scratcher</a>.</p>
<p>No comment from AOL. I&#8217;ve left messages for Harnevo, who can be seen in the video below:</p>

<p>I was able to buy a copy of Pages, Apple&#8217;s word processing app, which is now sitting in a new &#8220;iPad Apps&#8221; section of my application library in iTunes.</p>
<p>Interestingly, I don&#8217;t see any sign of <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5506994/whoa-the-official-netflix-streaming-ipad-app">the Netflix app that&#8217;s rumored to be coming for the device</a> &#8230;</p>

<p>Google&#8217;s (GOOG) video site says this is one of the &#8220;biggest redesigns in YouTube history,&#8221; but my hunch is that most YouTube users won&#8217;t notice any difference at all since they&#8217;re paying attention to the video clips and not the window dressing around it.</p>
<p>YouTube is briefing the press a little later today, and a PR rep promises that the email is merely a &#8220;condensed sliver&#8221; of what the company will be talking about. If true, I&#8217;ll update with anything relevant.</p>

In a research note published today, Morgan Stanley (MS) analyst Katy Huberty offers a few thoughts on what a successor to the iPhone 3GS might look like. </p>
<p>&#8220;We expect Apple to launch new iPhones in June that offer both a lower total cost of ownership and new functionality, potentially including gesture-based technology,&#8221; she wrote in a note to clients today. &#8220;As we’ve highlighted in the past, the cost of device + service plan is currently the biggest barrier to incremental demand in both mature markets like the US and emerging markets like China.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now, when Apple (AAPL) introduced the 3GS in 2009, it dropped the price of the iPhone 3G to $99, so it seems reasonable to expect the company to follow a similar pattern when it introduces a new iPhone. Might the price of the new device itself also be lower than expected? Perhaps. Certainly the fact that <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100127/drum-roll-please-meet-apples-ipad/">Apple was able to bring the iPad to market at $499</a> suggests it’s possible. </p>
<p>More intriguing than these ruminations on price, however, is Huberty’s mention of new &#8220;gesture-based technology.&#8221; The analyst doesn’t offer any details on what this might be, but presumably she’s referring to advances disclosed in some recent Apple patent filings.</p>
<p>Among the possibilities here: A <a href="http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2010/02/apples-ipad-may-gain-an-intelligent-bezel-in-the-future.html">touch-sensitive bezel</a> that would turn the outer edges of the device into intelligent &#8220;sense lines&#8221; that give users quick and easy access to their favorite applications, and some <a href="http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2010/02/cool-new-finger-swiping-camera-controls-coming-to-iphone-ipad.html">camera-based swipe controls</a> that offer one-handed control over a variety of iPhone functions. </p>
<p>Here’s a description of the latter from Patently Apple, which does a far better job explaining these things than I ever could.</p>

[This] patent reveals yet another innovative concept that is designed to help users control their incoming calls and voicemail by simply swiping their finger over the external camera lens. It will control rewinding and fast forwarding voicemail. In addition, the new methodology will also enhance one handed navigation of Web pages, documents, a contact list or your iTunes library by simply swiping the camera lens in different swiping motion combinations. In the future, the iPad may be able to take advantage of this feature if the camera is positioned correctly. This would theoretically allow a user to simply flick a finger over the camera lens to turn the page of a book or scroll a webpage without ever having to move your hand.

<p>Sounds pretty slick, yeah? Certainly, a feature like this would take smartphone navigation to a new level. Were it to be included in a next-generation iPhone along with a <a href="http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20091223PD225.html">five-megapixel camera</a>, <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/01/08/source_apple_shopping_for_led_camera_flash_components.html">LED flash</a> and <a href="http://www.9to5mac.com/iphone-video-chat-340968306">video chat support</a> that’s rumored&#8211;well, Apple might not need the lower price point as Huberty suggests to juice demand for the device.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With holiday shopping comes anxiety about getting the right gifts. Does Dad already own a copy of &#8220;Frank Sinatra&#8217;s Greatest Hits&#8221;? Was Mom expecting a new pepper mill, or was that Aunt Carol? It&#8217;s even worse for people shopping for the video gamers in their lives: Understanding the technical specifications of each console can seem as difficult as getting to the highest level in a game of Halo.</p>
<p><a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/files/2009/12/PJ-AS716_MOSSBE_F_20091208224902.jpg"><img src="http://solution.allthingsd.com/files/2009/12/PJ-AS716_MOSSBE_F_20091208224902.jpg" alt="PJ-AS716_MOSSBE_F_20091208224902" title="PJ-AS716_MOSSBE_F_20091208224902" width="380" height="158" class="aligncenter wp-image-973" rel="lightbox" /></a></p>
<p>This week, I&#8217;ve done the dirty work for you: I&#8217;ve amassed a collection of vital details about the three most popular systems—Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox 360, Sony&#8217;s (SNE) PlayStation 3 and Nintendo&#8217;s Wii—so that you can get a handle on what each offers and what it will cost you.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Nintendo Wii</h4>
<p>Nintendo recently dropped the Wii&#8217;s price, for the first time, to $200 from $250. The Wii Console comes with a controller, an additional controller called a Nunchuk, and the Wii Sports game, which includes baseball, tennis, golf, bowling and boxing. It holds 512 megabytes of flash memory, but you can increase this by inserting SecureDigital memory cards. It also accepts high-capacity SD cards, or SDHCs, of up to 32 gigabytes.</p>
<p>The couch-potato world of videogamers was shaken up when the Wii, with its motion-sensitive remote control, was introduced about three years ago. Users can play Wii Golf, for instance, by swinging the remote like a golf club. In September, Nintendo added to its lineup a $20 remote-control accessory called Wii MotionPlus that was designed to add more precision to game motions. I tested this snap-on piece and found that it did make the Wii&#8217;s motions feel more realistic. But it works only with Wii MotionPlus games—and there are only six of them; 10 more are planned for 2010.</p>
<p>Wii encourages users to move around in more ways than just waving a remote: Its Wii Balance Board, which comes with the Wii Fit Plus game in a $100 bundle, works like a digital exercise step. It records the body&#8217;s weight shifts and movements for activities from yoga to wake-boarding.</p>
<p>The Wii accesses the Internet and lets users compete online against others. About 655 packaged games are available for between $30 and $50. Also, you can use pre-purchased Nintendo Points to buy and download about 150 WiiWare games and over 325 titles from the older Virtual Console library. Each game costs between 300 and 1,500 points, or between about $3 and $15.</p>
<p>WiiConnect24 can send messages from one Wii to another over the Internet, as long the two users exchange &#8220;Wii numbers.&#8221; Users can also surf the Web with Wii&#8217;s Opera browser. But beyond this, no other Web features—like downloadable movies, social-networking applications or streaming music—will work on this system.</p>
<p>Parental controls can be set on the Wii to restrict kids from using the Web browser, playing games that have a certain rating or communicating online.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Microsoft Xbox 360</h4>
<p>Microsoft recently stepped up its game by adding features to its $200 Xbox 360 that make it well-rounded rather than strictly geared toward serious gamers. People who buy the Xbox LIVE Gold membership, for $50 a year, get applications for Facebook, Twitter, the Last.fm music-streaming service, online multiplayer game play, video chat, Netflix (Netflix subscription required), photo sharing via the Xbox, and movie or photo &#8220;parties&#8221; that allow users to watch a movie simultaneously with seven other friends.</p>
<p>Xbox LIVE Silver membership is free and includes basic features like voice and text chat, as well as access to the Zune video library&#8217;s 20,000 TV shows and movies to buy or rent. The Xbox also allows media-streaming over a home network. To wirelessly connect to the Internet on your Xbox, you&#8217;ll need to buy a $100 Wi-Fi adapter. By contrast, the Wii and PlayStation 3 have built-in Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>Anyone who owns a Microsoft Zune media player can buy a TV show or movie and download it to an Xbox or PC as well as the Zune. Zunes can be plugged into the Xbox to play music, as can Apple (AAPL) iPods.</p>
<p>The base Xbox comes with a wireless controller and 512 megabytes of memory. For $100 more, the Elite Holiday Bundle includes a 120-gigabyte hard drive, headset, wireless controller, and two games: &#8220;LEGO Batman: The Videogame&#8221; and &#8220;Pure.&#8221; More than 1,200 games are available for the Xbox, mostly costing between $29 and $60. About 350 of the games can be downloaded from the Xbox LIVE Arcade (costing 400 to 1,600 points, or $5 to $20) or the Games on Demand library.</p>
<p>Microsoft confirmed plans to introduce Project Natal, a system that lets people operate games with gestures and body movements rather than remote controls. Natal will work with all Xbox 360 consoles. Microsoft won&#8217;t confirm a date.</p>
<p>Family settings let parents control whether their kids play games online and with whom they play, as well as the ratings of the games. A Family Timer regulates how long kids play.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Sony PlayStation 3</h4>
<p>Sony&#8217;s PlayStation, like the Xbox 360, is designed with serious gamers in mind. Its base version costs $300 and includes a 120-gigabyte hard drive and a DualShock 3 wireless controller; $50 more buys a version with a 250-gigabyte hard drive. Both systems can be upgraded with any standard 2.5-inch hard drive. The PlayStation is also a Blu-ray disc player.</p>
<p>Like the Xbox, the PlayStation 3, or PS3, now offers extra features, but these features are all included in the PlayStation Network, which is free (not $50 yearly like Xbox LIVE Gold). These PlayStation Network extras include Netflix (NFLX) instant streaming, a Web browser, photo slide shows, the ability to stream media over a home network to the PS3, a Facebook application that shares game information with friends and the PlayStation Network video-delivery service, where users can purchase 2,400 high- and standard-definition movies and 15,000 TV episodes.</p>
<p>The PS3 and the PlayStation Portable, Sony&#8217;s portable gaming device, are married in many ways. A new feature called Blu-ray Portable Copy lets users make a free standard-definition copy of some Blu-ray movies for transfer to a PlayStation Portable. Remote Play lets people stream media files from the PS3 to the PlayStation Portable in Wi-Fi hot spots or remotely turn the PS3 on or off using the PlayStation Portable. Movies and TV shows from the PlayStation Network can be transferred to either system, so you can start a movie on a big-screen TV and finish it on the PlayStation Portable; the same can be done for games.</p>
<p>About 400 games are available on Blu-ray for the PS3; these cost between $30 and $60. More than 150 titles, costing between $3 and $40, can be downloaded directly to the PS3. Sony confirmed that it will release a motion-sensing controller, but it hasn&#8217;t set a date.</p>
<p>Parental restrictions for the PS3 include the ability to restrict games, DVDs and Blu-ray discs with certain ratings. Parents can also limit monthly spending or Web browsing.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As people acquire multiple digital devices, including tiny netbooks and super-smart phones, it becomes harder to coordinate all their documents, music and photos so they have access to them from whichever device they&#8217;re using at the moment.</p>
<p>People resort to all sorts of time-consuming methods for doing this. Some email the items to themselves. Others copy them to USB thumb drives and manually transfer them to each machine. Still others use Internet-based, or &#8220;cloud,&#8221; storage, uploading all their photos to a service like Flickr or Facebook, or using Web-based productivity programs like Google Docs (GOOG). And some use Web-based backup, storage or synchronization services.</p>
<p>Each of these methods, even the cloud-based ones, has limitations and frustrations. Some are complicated, or work only with certain kinds of files. Others work only when you have a Web connection, or don&#8217;t replicate your preferred folder structure. Still, others work OK with standard files and folders, but have trouble with specially arranged content, such as music that is organized in a jukebox program.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing a cloud-based service that attempts to solve these problems. It is called ZumoDrive, and it comes from a small company called Zecter Inc. A new version is due out this week that aims to add some capability and make the task simpler.</p>
<p>ZumoDrive mimics a standard physical hard disk, which can contain numerous folders and files. It works on Windows, Macintosh or Linux computers, and also comes in a more limited version for the Apple iPhone. It presents itself as a standard hard-disk icon on all your computers. But it&#8217;s actually a single, identical virtual hard disk that lives on the company&#8217;s servers, not on the computers themselves. The files it contains are rapidly streamed down to your machines when you need them.</p>
<p>I tested the service on a desktop Windows PC, a netbook, two Mac laptops and an iPhone. I generally liked ZumoDrive and found it easy to use, and pretty fast. But I ran into a few glitches, and it can be pricey. The new version will offer 2 gigabytes of storage free, but will cost a monthly or annual fee for more storage, ranging from $30 a year for 10 gigabytes to $800 a year for 500 gigabytes.</p>
<p>Also, like all cloud-based storage, ZumoDrive isn&#8217;t fully accessible when you&#8217;re offline. It caches, or automatically downloads, some recently used files, making them available offline. But you may want to open a document or play a song that is available only when you are online.</p>
<p>There have been online storage services for years, including some that could appear as desktop icons. In particular, ZumoDrive competes with somewhat similar services such as SugarSync and DropBox. But it&#8217;s different.</p>
<p>Unlike DropBox, it doesn&#8217;t require you to remember to place files in a single, special folder. You can link your existing folders to the ZumoDrive. And, unlike SugarSync, it doesn&#8217;t copy all your shared files to the hard disks of all your computers. It keeps the files in the cloud.</p>
<p>Compared with SugarSync, which I also like, ZumoDrive uses much less of your hard disk space, and does a better job with iTunes libraries. But SugarSync doesn&#8217;t require you to be online to use the files it synchronizes, though it also keeps a backup copy that you can access from the Web. </p>
<p>You don&#8217;t need to learn any special techniques to use ZumoDrive. Your computer sees the ZumoDrive as if it were a physical hard disk, so you can add and delete files to it in the normal ways. A program like Microsoft Word (MSFT) also sees it as a normal disk, and can open files from, or save them to, a ZumoDrive without a second thought.</p>
<p>And, because a ZumoDrive can be large without taking up much space on your local drive, it is especially nice for netbooks, which may offer relatively little storage. It also allows you to share folders with others, and encrypts the data you store on it, for security.</p>
<p>To use ZumoDrive, you first upload all your key stuff from your main computer. Then, once you install the small ZumoDrive program on your other devices, all those file names show up on your screen and can be fetched from the cloud when you like. You can add files and folders from the other computers as well. And you can also access your files via a Web site or an iPhone.</p>
<p>You can link folders on your computers to identical folders on your ZumoDrive, and they will stay in sync, so you can keep using the folder structure you&#8217;re used to, and it will be up-to-date on the ZumoDrive.</p>
<p>ZumoDrive understands how to handle and centralize your iTunes music library. In my tests, I uploaded an iTunes library of about 900 songs from a Mac at my home, and was able to play the songs on a Windows XP netbook that had no music stored locally.</p>
<p>I ran into some glitches and limitations, all of which the company says it is fixing. For instance, at first my netbook didn&#8217;t fetch all the iTunes songs.</p>
<p>But, all in all, ZumoDrive is a harbinger of the new world of cloud computing, and it is worth a look.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It has been about two years since Apple last released a major firmware update for its Apple TV platform, so <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/10/29appletv.html">the release of Apple TV 3.0 today</a> will come as welcome news to those who own the device.</p>
<p>Apple TV 3.0 is largely as rumored: Adding support for Internet radio, Genius Mixes, iTunes LP and iTunes Extras (bonus clips, interviews, etc.). But it boasts another new feature as well: A redesigned user interface.</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/appletv_main.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/appletv_main-250x140.jpg" alt="appletv_main" title="appletv_main" width="250" height="140" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-27774" /></a></p>
<p>Whether the debut of Apple TV 3.0 heralds a hardware refresh of the device itself is anyone’s guess. It is worth noting, though, that there’s been quite a bit of speculation recently that Cupertino is working on an overhauled device that will offer DVR capabilities and support iTunes TV show subscriptions.</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090820/apple-triple-play-itunes-app-tv-and-apple-television/">As Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster wrote back in August</a>: &#8220;Apple could leverage its deep library of content with many network and cable channel content owners to provide unlimited access to a sub-library of its TV shows for a standard monthly fee ($30 or $40 per month).&#8221;</p>
<p>According to Munster, &#8220;Such a product would effectively replace a consumer’s monthly cable bill (~$85/month) and offer access to current and older episodes of select shows on select channels. The selection would dictate the value, and several tiers could be offered, but we see this as one way for Apple to leverage its large iTunes content library as well as its unique Apple TV hardware in order to get digital video to the TV for a price significantly less than the average cable or satellite TV bill.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sounds sweet, right? And it would be sweeter still <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090604/app-tv/">if it were to offer App Store support</a> and allow users to control games and other apps via iPhone or iPod touch &#8230;</p>

<p>A year later, Sonos is building on the success of that app, launching an all-in-one wireless music system specifically designed for it. <a href="http://www.sonos.com/demo/s5/default.aspx">The ZonePlayer S5</a>, as the company calls it, encapsulates Sonos’s multi-component system in a single  device that can be controlled by an Apple (AAPL) iPhone, iPod touch or computer.</p>
<p>It’s a sort of iPodless iPod speaker dock or, rather, an iPod speaker dock where the iPod can be carried with you. The S5 can stream music from the iTunes library of any computer or networked hard drive. And with five speakers&#8211;two tweeters, two three-inch midrange drivers and one 3.5-inch woofer&#8211;and a 5 Class-D digital amplifier, the sound is likely to fill a room pretty well. Priced at $399, the S5 is expected at market on Oct. 27.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At long last, Microsoft has made a portable media player that you can be proud to carry around: the Zune HD.</p>
<p>This fourth-generation Zune (<a href="http://Zune.net">Zune.net</a>) is ultra thin and has a stunningly vivid 3.3-inch touch screen that covers most of its surface, doing away with the old device&#8217;s touchpad. It comes in one small size rather than the older large and small versions, and has capacities of 16 and 32 gigabytes for $220 and $290, respectively. </p>

<p>The Zune HD does a nice job of integrating and artistically displaying content about an artist, song or album whenever possible. It has an acceptable built-in browser that surfs the Web using a Wi-Fi connection, and a customizable Quickplay menu on the home screen that displays your content using tiny, stylish tiles. The corresponding Zune Marketplace finally offers movies—about 500 for renting or buying, half of which have HD resolution. And a $90 docking station works with the device to display its HD content on your HDTV.</p>
<p>Given all the improvements of this new Zune, it&#8217;s a shame that this makeover stopped short of revamping its commerce system, which is still too confusing. Rather than inviting newcomers to the Zune and its online store by allowing them to use real money to buy content, it is still tied to the points system made popular by Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox gaming console. In this gamer-friendly system, the cost of one song is 79 points, roughly the equivalent of a dollar, and users must buy points in buckets ranging from 400 for $5 to 5,000 for $62.50. People who are trying to watch their budgets don&#8217;t need the hassle of calculating points per purchase. And Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) Kindle e-reader and Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes Store have proved that using dollars and an uncomplicated one-click system is a successful strategy.</p>
<p>The way I prefer to get the most out of the Zune system is by using the Zune Pass for $15 monthly. This charge allows free continuous streaming of music from any computer&#8217;s browser as long as you log in, and includes 10 free MP3 downloads a month that are yours to keep even if you bail on using the Zune software. The Zune Pass lets you listen to Smart DJ playlists that can be built in one of three ways: using your own library; using a mix of Marketplace content and music from your library; or using only songs from the Marketplace. These also can be set to last for a certain amount of time—say for a 30-minute jog or a two-hour party.</p>
<p>I created several Smart DJ playlists including one using Dierks Bentley as the seed artist from which other suggestions were generated. This country singer was a good test for the Zune software because Mr. Bentley&#8217;s music blends new and old country sounds. I set the Smart DJ to produce a mix using only content from Marketplace and it returned a great list that included songs from newer group, Little Big Town, as well as older stuff like Joe Diffie&#8217;s &#8220;John Deere Green.&#8221; Any Smart DJ list can be dragged onto the Zune HD.             </p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s iPod Touch is the Zune HD&#8217;s biggest rival and its iTunes Store has much more content in all categories compared with Zune Marketplace. But let&#8217;s put music, movies, TV shows, podcasts and music videos aside and say we&#8217;re satisfied with the amount of content offered by Zune Marketplace. </p>
<p>One of the iPod Touch&#8217;s best features is its ability to access Apple&#8217;s App Store, a catalog of 75,000 applications. The Zune HD only dips its pinky toe into a pool where Apple is already swimming laps: Only nine apps can be downloaded from the Zune Marketplace (all are free). They&#8217;re colorful and simple to use, but nine apps won&#8217;t be enough to compete head on with the iPod Touch.</p>

<p>It would be a real boon to Zune if it somehow inherited the gaming genes of Microsoft&#8217;s already-established Xbox, especially considering how Apple has heavily marketed the iPod Touch as a portable gaming system. Microsoft will only say that later this year Zune will offer apps for Twitter and Facebook as well as 3-D games like &#8220;Project Gotham Racing: Ferrari Edition.&#8221; </p>
<p>The only same-capacity model in the Zune HD and iPod Touch is the 32-gigabyte, which costs $290 and $299, respectively. The Zune HD is smaller than the iPod Touch so its organic light-emitting-diode touch screen is 3.3 inches compared with the Touch&#8217;s 3.5-inch screen. The Zune fits easily in any pocket and is just 0.35-inch thick. A thin horizontal button on the face of the device takes you to the home screen, and a hidden button on the left side pulls up an on-screen menu for volume and playback controls—or just tap the screen when content is playing. It doesn&#8217;t have a speaker like the iPod Touch, so you&#8217;ll always need earbuds to hear anything that&#8217;s playing.</p>
<p>Quickplay is one of my favorite features on the Zune HD. It uses tiny tiles to visually represent your content in four categories: currently playing; anything pinned (or labeled with a shortcut tile) to Quickplay; a history of recently opened content; and anything that&#8217;s new to the player. This includes all of your photos, videos, music, Web pages and apps. I easily pinned <a href="http://AllThingsD.com">AllThingsD.com</a>, a &#8220;Saturday Night Live&#8221; video and a favorite photo to the Quickplay menu. Clever animation sends this menu to the background of the home screen or swiftly pulls it into the foreground when needed.</p>
<p>I rented and downloaded the movie &#8220;Girl with a Pearl Earring&#8221; and opted to pay 360 points for the HD version rather than paying 240 points for the standard-definition version. A helpful on-screen explanation described the advantages of each according to where it would be played. Movie rentals last for 14 days or 24 hours after you first press play. </p>
<p>Listening to music on the Zune HD is a lot of fun—and even educational. Whenever the screen goes idle while playing a song, large images of the artist and album cover fill the entire screen while text—album name, artist name, song name—scrolls across these images. With one touch, I saw a list of other albums and songs by that artist, an artist biography, related artists, and pictures of the artist. This is a lot more interesting than staring at one image on the screen, and I learned a lot of new information about musicians I&#8217;ve been listening to for years. </p>
<p>The newly added Web browser on the Zune HD gets the job done, but has downsides. Its on-screen keyboard for entering names of Web pages has very small keys and doesn&#8217;t use predictive typing to fix your mistakes. Some Web pages rendered normally on the browser, but a couple—like <a href="http://Georgetown.edu">Georgetown.edu</a>—looked normal only when I turned the Zune HD horizontally. </p>
<p>As with other Zunes, this Zune HD has a radio receiver and now uses HD radio for finding more stations with clearer signals. If you like a song, an on-screen button tags it for buying and downloading immediately or later.</p>
<p>The Zune HD is a great-looking little player, and users will especially appreciate its Quickplay menu, rich collection of artist information and mesmerizing screen. If its points system was scrapped and its Zune Marketplace was filled with more content, I&#8217;d like it better.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apple&#8217;s iTunes program is one of the most popular software products in the world. The company says hundreds of millions of copies of iTunes have been downloaded, far exceeding the 220 million iPod music players it has sold. That&#8217;s because many people use iTunes to organize, play and buy music and videos on their computers, or to burn music CDs, even if they don&#8217;t own iPods or iPhones. Ironically, the vast majority of iTunes copies are on Windows PCs, not Apple&#8217;s own Macintosh computers, because Windows machines are much more numerous.</p>

<p>Last week, Apple released its ninth major version of iTunes &#8212; which first came out in January, 2001, before the iPod even existed &#8212; and I&#8217;ve been testing it. This release is the biggest overhaul of the familiar program in recent years, with improvements in the look and functionality of each of the software&#8217;s three main portions: the media jukebox, the built-in store and the synchronization features that move media and applications to and from iPods and iPhones.</p>
<p>In my tests, performed on multiple Windows PCs and Macs, iTunes 9 worked as advertised, and I found it to be less cluttered, more intelligent and easier to use than the prior version. It synced music and videos properly for me using both an iPod Nano and an iPhone. It&#8217;s available as a free download at <a href="http://apple.com/itunes">apple.com/itunes</a>.</p>
<p>To me, the two biggest new features in iTunes 9 are something called Home Sharing and a new, easier way to organize the apps on an iPhone or iPod Touch.</p>
<p>For years, iTunes users have been able to wirelessly stream music from nearby computers running iTunes whose owners chose to share their music. But Home Sharing takes this one step further, allowing users to actually copy the song files from one computer to another. </p>
<p>Right inside iTunes, you can simply peer into the shared library on another computer set up to allow this, and then select the song you want and drag it into your own library. It doesn&#8217;t delete the original from the other computer.</p>
<p>In my tests, this worked perfectly with music, as well as TV shows, movies and audiobooks, and it worked between any combination of my PCs and Macs. You can even configure Home Sharing to automatically transfer to your library new media purchased on another shared computer.</p>
<p>But Home Sharing has limitations. It only works with a maximum of five computers. These computers must be on the same local network, not connected over the Internet. And they must be the same computers authorized to play copy-protected media you buy from Apple. </p>
<p>With 75,000 apps available for the iPhone and iPod Touch, it has been easy to download so many that your device becomes cluttered, with numerous icons scattered among numerous screens in a manner that isn&#8217;t optimal. There&#8217;s a way to move them around, or delete them, right on the device, but it&#8217;s clumsy, partly because you can&#8217;t see all the screens at once, and partly because it&#8217;s difficult to move an icon from a location on one screen to another location several screens away. </p>

<p>Now, in the new iTunes 9, when you plug in your device, the software displays an exact visual representation of your iPhone or Touch screens right on your computer, and allows you to rearrange them with your mouse. When you disconnect, the new arrangement is retained on the phone. It worked fine for me.</p>
<p>In iTunes 9, you also can create up to 12 automated &#8220;Genius Mixes&#8221; from your personal music library &#8212; essentially personal radio stations consisting of songs iTunes considers to be related, that play on and on. I enjoyed this feature, and found it generally made good choices.</p>
<p>There are also a number of small visual improvements throughout the program. In the jukebox, for instance, you can now locate all songs by a particular artist using a Column Browser &#8212; an optional left-hand column that lists the artists. </p>
<p>In the store, categories like music, movies and TV shows are now arrayed across the top, with drop-down menus for genres. The store also is generally better organized, with richer graphics, more white space and easier navigation.</p>
<p>A small touch of social networking, not exactly Apple&#8217;s historic strength, has been added to iTunes. From inside the store, you can post a link to a favorite title to either Facebook or Twitter, though this of course serves Apple by encouraging others to buy the title.</p>
<p>You can now buy special albums, called &#8220;iTunes LPs,&#8221; that attempt to replicate the experience of old vinyl albums by including lots of extra material. For instance, for one such title by the Doors, iTunes delivered to me liner notes, digital scans of old posters and set lists, plus photos and video interviews. Another, called Mayhem, by the singer/actor Tyrese Gibson, includes just one song, but also a vivid digital comic book with voiced dialogue.</p>
<p>However, these iTunes LPs take up a lot of space on your hard disk &#8212; about half a gigabyte each for the ones I tried.</p>
<p>Overall, iTunes 9 is a nice improvement on a much-used program.</p>
