<p>Longtime Yahoo exec Raymond Stern (pictured here) &#8212; who seems to have fit into a lot of management reorgs in his short time at the Silicon Valley Internet giant &#8212; has been named to a new role at the company as SVP of strategy, corporate development and new ventures.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll be reporting to CEO Scott Thompson, according to an internal memo I got sent by the people who send me internal memos from Yahoo. (A group, I might add, that is getting bigger by the day.)</p>
<p>When he <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20091216/yahoo-hires-stern-for-senior-partnership-and-biz-dev-post/">got to Yahoo in late 2009</a>, Stern had first been named SVP of North America partnerships and business development for Yahoo. He later had to also pinch-hit as its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole/">head of U.S. audience, mobile and local</a>, after an exec left, before being named <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101004/no-massive-reorg-at-yahoo-but-more-exec-departures-plus-the-schneider-goodbye-letter/">SVP of North America audience</a>. Then, after another exec took over the audience job, he was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110110/mickie-rosen-to-join-yahoo-as-audience-head/">back to business development and partnerships and also added the listings business</a> to his portfolio. Then, Stern got <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110128/exclusive-yahoo-mobile-vp-michael-shim-headed-to-groupon/">mobile biz dev</a> back, after another exec left.</p>
<p>Now, the man who has been the Swiss Army Knife of Yahoo will be the key strategy guy for Thompson, who clearly wants to do a lot of strategizing.</p>
<p>Interesting note: Stern was a former consultant to Boston Consulting Group, which is Thompson&#8217;s go-to outside team on his ongoing restructuring of the company. He is also a former Intuit exec.</p>
<p>As per usual, here is the internal memo on Stern&#8217;s appointment from Thompson, who is dealing with some <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120509/technations-gunn-says-she-and-yahoo-ceo-talked-about-their-cs-degrees-before-2009-show-video-and-audio/">other very thorny issues</a> right now too:</p>

<p>Over the last few months, you&#8217;ve heard me talk a lot about focusing our company around our core business. As part of this, we need to find new ways to strengthen, leverage, and monetize our core assets &#8212; all in conjunction with our long-term strategy focused on driving growth. To help tackle this challenge, I&#8217;m excited to announce that Raymond Stern will take on a new role at Yahoo! as senior vice president of strategy, corporate development, and new ventures, reporting to me.  </p>
<p>For those of you who haven&#8217;t had the chance to meet Raymond over the last two and half years here at Yahoo!, he previously oversaw distribution partnerships and business development, as well as our Latin American, Canadian, and small business teams. Earlier in his career, he spent 10 years at the Boston Consulting Group, and later had various roles at Intuit including leading strategy and corporate development during a transformational period in the late 90s through the mid 2000s.  </p>
<p>In his new role, Raymond will work across the teams to ensure alignment and that we are taking advantage of opportunities around the globe.   He will lead three critical areas for us:</p>
<p><strong>Strategy:</strong> Raymond will lead corporate strategy, working in close partnership with the senior leadership team and me. </p>
<p><strong>Corporate Development:</strong> Raymond will work with the team to find opportunities to accelerate our progress and growth through acquisitions, investments and strategic partnerships. In conjunction with this, Marcus Shen and his group will be renamed corporate M&#038;A, and will continue to be the transactional execution arm supporting Yahoo!&#8217;s corporate development initiatives.</p>
<p><strong>New Ventures:</strong> Raymond will look at emerging areas outside of what’s happening in the halls of Yahoo! and bring new innovative and disruptive ideas to the forefront.</p>
<p>In the coming weeks, you&#8217;ll hear more from Raymond as he works with the leadership team to align our corporate priorities and long-term strategy. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s not <em>all</em> departures!</p>
<p>Yahoo is hiring former News Corp. and Disney online exec Mickie Rosen (pictured here) to run its Audience unit, which includes the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s powerful content sites, sources said.</p>
<p>Starting next week, Rosen will report to Americas head Ross Levinsohn, who has worked with her before, at both News Corp. and Fuse Capital.</p>
<p>Her new title is SVP of the Yahoo Media Network, which is apparently a rebranding of Audience.</p>
<p>Previous to this job, Rosen was CEO of Tecca, a price-checking service Fuse created in partnership with Best Buy.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s likely she will remain based in the Los Angeles area, where Yahoo has a large office in Santa Monica, Calif.</p>
<p>The move is Levinsohn&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110105/yahoos-display-ad-vp-gm-departs-meanwhile-hair-tastic-u-s-head-reorgs-unit/">first management rejiggering</a> since he took over last year, and there is likely to be more to come.</p>
<p>Rosen, who has also worked at the Fandango online movie ticketing site, will replace interim audience head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole/">Raymond Stern</a>, who will be&#8211;as before&#8211;running partnerships and business development, as well as Yahoo&#8217;s listings business.</p>
<p>Rosen&#8217;s new job had actually been that of former Audience head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101004/exclusive-yahoos-david-ko-to-head-mobile-at-online-gaming-powerhouse-zynga">David Ko</a>, as well as former <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants">Media VP Jimmy Pitaro</a>.</p>
<p>Ko left Yahoo and is now heading mobile games at Zynga, while Pitaro is a top digital exec at Disney.</p>

For the past dozen years, she has been at the intersection of media and technology, in both large companies such as News Corporation and The Walt Disney Company and in small, early stage start-ups.</p>
<p>Prior to joining the firm, she was the head of entertainment for Fox Interactive Media where she was responsible for properties such as AmericanIdol.com, Rotten Tomatoes and the entertainment channels of MySpace. Mickie also led content acquisition across the Company, and was a lead in envisioning, structuring and negotiating Hulu, the premier video joint venture between News Corp. and NBC Universal.</p>
<p>Prior to Fox Interactive Media, Mickie was the head of product development, marketing and public relations for Fandango, where she helped lead the company from an early-stage start-up to profitability as it became a leader in its space (acquired by Comcast). Mickie was also a senior executive with an e-learning start-up, an Idealab! consumer robotics company and Disney&#8217;s Corporate Alliances group, where she negotiated deals and managed Disney&#8217;s top global partners such as Coca-Cola, American Express and AT&#038;T.</p>
<p>Mickie built the foundation of her career with McKinsey &#038; Company, where she spent seven years consulting with senior management on strategy, operational and organizational issues across a number of industries, including media and technology.<br />
Mickie has an MBA from Harvard Business School, and a B.A. in Economics from UC San Diego, and is based in Los Angeles.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Microsoft is having a little Bing gathering in San Francisco. I&#8217;m told there will be some mobile stuff, plus I&#8217;m still having withdrawal symptoms after seven years on the Redmond beat, so I&#8217;ll be providing live coverage starting at about 10 am PT.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll also see what they have to say about the Yahoo search partnership and its efforts to catch up with Google (and trip them up with antitrust headaches).</p>

<p>Okay. I&#8217;m onsite and nearly caffeinated. Yes, there are donuts, but Mobilized is going for the savory option.</p>

<p><strong>10:03 am</strong>: Still waiting for things to get started here.</p>
<p><strong>10:04 am</strong>: Microsoft search engineering head Satya Nadella comes out. &#8220;Okay, let&#8217;s get this thing underway.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:06 am</strong>: First up, some momentum stuff. Share is at 11.8 percent per comScore numbers released yesterday, up another 0.2 percent from October. Overall up 48 percent since launch. &#8220;We&#8217;re very, very happy with that growth.&#8221; Now over 90 million users, but the big deal, he says, is more heavy searchers. &#8220;We never had the fans of Bing and the heavy users,&#8221; Nadella says.</p>
<p><strong>10:08 am</strong>: Nadella says Bing is still getting a larger percentage of 18- to 24-year-olds than its share of searchers as a whole.</p>
<p><strong>10:09 am</strong>: &#8220;These are footholds that we have in the marketplace,&#8221; Nadella says.</p>

<p><strong>10:11 am</strong>: Continued focus on specialized verticals (like travel, music, health, image search etc). Overall, such searches account for five percent of all queries, but specialized search makes up of 10 percent of Bing&#8217;s searches.</p>
<p><strong>10:12 am</strong>: Partnerships: Yahoo is obviously the big one, but Nadella shows slide with Facebook, Twitter, Verizon., BlackBerry, Apple, Android, Foursquare and other logos.</p>
<p>There ave been 5.5 million downloads of the iPhone app.</p>
<p>Nadella says the toolbar deals are also important: They just give us a shot at acquiring the users. They have another one coming with Conduit. Also, they are now at least an option on iPhone and Firefox.</p>

<p><strong>10:16 am</strong>: Nadella says the engineering team is focused on three areas, beyond the &#8220;arms race&#8221; of overall search quality&#8211;increasing the visual organization, task-centered nature and social elements of search. </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re neck and neck in terms of search quality and we are able to maintain it,&#8221; Nadella says.</p>
<p><strong>10:18 am</strong>: Lots of talk about the ins and outs of search tech. Nadella says Microsoft has moved from a &#8220;neural net&#8221; approach to &#8220;boosted decision trees.&#8221; (No idea what that means.)</p>
<p><strong>10:22 am</strong>: Effort to make search more social is important, but just beginning. &#8220;This is a journey we are at the very beginnings of,&#8221; Nadella says, but says social will change search in terms of how results are discovered, formulated and answered.</p>
<p><strong>10:24 am</strong>: Nadella is talking about the importance of visual highlighting to call out various results as well as boosting interactivity, such as including forms within results so users can take action.</p>
<p>Still waiting for any new stuff, but we&#8217;re told it&#8217;s coming.</p>
<p>Nadella says the company has broken down a list of the tasks people are trying to do when they are trying to do more than just navigate to a particular site.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a pretty granular understanding just looking at the query stream of what people are trying to get done.&#8221;</p>
<p>Microsoft has broken it down to some 150 categories, but here are some of the top ones: 4.6 percent of searches are music related, 1.8 percent clothing and shoes, 1.6 percent consumer electronics, 1.1 recipes, 1.3 percent home furnishings.</p>
<p><strong>10:29 am</strong>: On to some new stuff.</p>
<p>New image search launching today, but first Microsoft is talking about visual search for things like finding movies and giving direct answers for some new types of queries.</p>

<p><strong>10:31 am</strong>: Microsoft is talking about any sort of non-search result as &#8220;answers.&#8221;</p>
<p>In one case, an &#8220;answer&#8221; for the query &#8220;let&#8217;s make a deal&#8221; would be video episodes of the game show.</p>
<p>But Microsoft says that automatically putting it at the top is not necessarily best. What the company says it should do instead is put it below the first two results, such as the show&#8217;s homepage, which get more clicks than the video.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am</strong>: Also when a user searches flights from Denver to Las Vegas in June, Microsoft pre-populates the fields in a flight search with a guess at the dates, in this case the first weekend in June.</p>
<p><strong>10:38 am</strong>: New image search represents first major changes in a year. Biggest shift is white space is gone with just a ton of tiles of images, with some categories at the top.</p>
<p>For example, search &#8220;Casablanca&#8221; and you get an option for the city in Morocco, another for the movie, a third for the style of wedding dress and another for the Casablanca Lily flower.</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am</strong>: On to shopping. Quadrupled the number of products in its database.</p>

<p><strong>10:43 am</strong>: Bing is adding a new focus on places as &#8220;destinations&#8221; with all the potential content from booking a flight or hotel to maps and attractions. </p>
<p>Which is nice, because I&#8217;m ready to go on a vacation right about now.</p>
<p>They use weather data to show times to go to and times to avoid a particular place.</p>
<p><strong>10:45 am</strong>: Microsoft is beefing up event listings with partnership from FanSnap and other partners. You get ticket info, diagram of stadium, etc.</p>

<p><strong>10:50 am</strong>: Back to social. Nadella says search can change by using one&#8217;s social graph to influence search results.</p>
<p>First example, you will start to see when your Facebook friends &#8220;Like&#8221; a page that is in search results.</p>
<p>For now, such results will only come up fairly infrequently, but Nadella says it will be a big deal when you do see pages that your friends have liked.</p>

<p>Search allows the data your friends share on Facebook to come to you when you actually want the information.</p>
<p>&#8220;In a way you are taking your friends with you,&#8221; says Microsoft&#8217;s Paul Yiu.</p>
<p>An example is when you are shopping for a product or going to visit a place&#8211;that&#8217;s a time when you really want to know what your friends think.</p>
<p>(Seems pretty cool, but wondering just how infrequently this will show up.)</p>
<p><strong>10:57 am</strong>: Another example Yiu gives is a search one might do at 3 am for what will make your baby stop crying. There are lots of results, but one that your friend likes might be worth trying first.</p>
<p><strong>11:00 am</strong>: Bing is also using one&#8217;s Facebook social circle to rank results in people search&#8211;i.e., if you have a friend in common, it will rank that &#8220;John Doe&#8221; higher than one you don&#8217;t know.</p>
<p><strong>11:01 am</strong>: Nadella is back to talk about local and maps and how that integrates with mobile. Behind him Blaise Aguera y Arcas is pulling out several phones to do a demo. (And they look like iPhones.)</p>
<p><strong>11:03 am</strong>: Aguera y Arcas takes the stage to show some changes coming to maps, first on the desktop. He notes the recent shift away from putting its most powerful map features on a Silverlight-powered site. Now it is moving that all to an HTML5-based site that needs no plug-ins.</p>
<p><strong>11:07 am</strong>: Bing is bringing the &#8220;tasks&#8221; concept to searches within maps. A search for a restaurant now brings up not just a map, but more info on the eatery and also the ability to make reservations via OpenTable.</p>
<p><strong>11:09 am</strong>: Aguera y Arcas switches to the iPhone. Shows how people can add their own panoramas to maps using a cellphone.</p>
<p><strong>11:13 am</strong>: iPhone demo over 3G is going really slow. Aguera y Arcas asks how many of the reporters in the room are using 3G.</p>
<p><strong>11:15 am</strong>: Although its going painfully slow, looks like Bing app starts to recognize a restaurant search and pops up options like types of cuisine and price. The goal is to save keystrokes.</p>
<p>Other options are things like get a map, make a reservation, menus, etc.</p>
<p>Still R-E-A-L-L-Y S-L-O-W.</p>
<p>&#8220;This bandwidth situation is really going to suck for what I have to demo next.&#8221;</p>
<p>He switches to a first-person StreetSide view, but all we see are dots.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is so sad,&#8221; Aguera y Arcas says, lamenting that we aren&#8217;t able to see all the cool stuff. There does seem to be some new StreetSide view stuff on the iPhone app that could be neat, assuming it runs faster on the street than inside this demo room.</p>

<p><strong>11:23 am</strong>: We&#8217;ve reached a new low. &#8220;Close your eyes and imagine&#8230;.&#8221; Aguera y Arcas says, and then describes what the app would do if we could see it.</p>
<p><strong>11:23 am</strong>: And they have switched to Wi-Fi. &#8220;This is so exciting,&#8221; Aguera y Arcas says. Now he&#8217;s going back to StreetSide. &#8220;That&#8217;s so much nicer.&#8221;</p>
<p>As for directions, Bing now has bus directions with schedule info in addition to driving and walking directions. &#8220;It&#8217;s about time,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been waiting for this one myself.&#8221;</p>
<p>Another feature reminds you to do something when you reach a certain place, like call someone or check-in to FourSquare or Facebook.</p>
<p><strong>11:29 am</strong>: Aguera says we are in Search 2.0&#8211;where you do more than just search and get results. </p>
<p>Image search is an example. Shows the coming ability to search for something by using a camera to start a search. Basically you can shoot a picture of a page and use any of the terms there to start searching (It uses character recognition in the background).</p>

<p><strong>11:32 am</strong>: How big a deal is Google Instant?</p>
<p>&#8220;We are absolutely studying Google Instant,&#8221; Nadella says. Says they could match it. It&#8217;s a question of whether it makes task completion easier. &#8220;Is it a value or a distraction?&#8221; Doing studies and so far Microsoft&#8217;s research says it is mixed at best.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a game changer. It&#8217;s a nice feature at best.&#8221;</p>
<p>He hedges a bit on whether it is something Microsoft needs to match.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/gilelbaz-150x150.jpg" alt="" title="gilelbaz" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-422" />When you want to build an application that uses lots of data&#8211;say, a directory of auto-repair shops or hotels in the U.K.&#8211;one of the fundamental questions is this: Where does the data come from, and how do you get it into the application?</p>
<p>Gil Elbaz, the man who in 2003 sold a start-up called Applied Semantics (now known as <a href="https://www.google.com/adsense/www/en_US/tour/index.html">AdSense</a>) to Google, has what he thinks is the solution. His latest effort is <a href="http://www.factual.com/">Factual</a>, and it attracted a $25 million round of funding from Andreessen Horowitz and Index Ventures with SV Angel and former Disney president Michael Ovitz participating. <a href="http://bhorowitz.com/">Ben Horowitz</a> and <a href="http://www.indexventures.com/team/index/profile_id/5">Danny Rimer</a> are joining Factual&#8217;s board of directors.</p>
<p>I caught up with Elbaz by phone yesterday to talk about the vision of Factual and his plans to grow the company.</p>
<p><strong>NewEnterprise: So at a high level, what is Factual and what do you intend to do?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Gil Elbaz:</strong> We see this as an emerging category. We think of it as a data platform that offers data and data services to all sorts of developers, to build cooler, more innovative applications more quickly, especially when it comes to apps that are data-driven. Finding the right vendor for that data, and then integrating it, then managing and maintaining that data is costly and expensive. Developers can move that much more quickly by tapping into our knowledge base. We’re marketing certain verticals where our data is really good. We’re putting some extra marketing muscle behind our places database.</p>
<p><strong>NE: Give me a use case. How might someone use the platform?</strong></p>
<p><strong>GE:</strong> Our places database is a good example where we’re getting quite a bit of traction. What we’ve done is built one of the most comprehensive databases of business listings and points of interest. This data is easy to browse, and it&#8217;s complete. It contains address and phone and contact info and latitude and longitude. If you want to a build a new service like Yelp or Foursquare, or something that relies on knowing what&#8217;s in close proximity, a mobile app can make a simple API call, send over the current GPS coordinate and fulfill the request very quickly. That’s just the tip of the iceberg of what we can do, but it&#8217;s making serious waves because it is very hard to get that data, especially if you’re going mobile. It’s very hard to get that good data for locations around the world.</p>
<p><strong>NE: Do you have other datasets? </strong></p>
<p><strong>GE: </strong>We’re being market driven and being focused on that because that’s what our customers have been asking for. But we do have others. We have data from other vertical segments like health and entertainment. In the area of education we built a <a href="http://www.newsweek.com/feature/2010/americas-best-high-schools.html">database of high schools</a> that Newsweek magazine uses in their fairly important annual ranking of high schools. They not only use the data that we were able to generate and build, but they were also able to benefit from our crowdsourcing API, so that their users get not only a more engaging experience but the great partnership comes back into our central database, so the information can be improved. That’s a nice virtuous circle that makes us confident that our data is going to keep getting better because of these partnerships.</p>
<p><strong>NE: I’m trying to come up with a metaphor, and the closest thing I can think of is data&#8211;information&#8211;as a utility supplier of data. If I want to build an application that contains a lot of data, I can come to you for the data I want to use so I don’t have to go out and gather it myself. Is that fair?</strong></p>
<p><strong>GE:</strong> I think that’s a pretty good metaphor. It’s really the access that’s important. When you use our pipe you’re going to know that you’re getting good data, that’s up to date and that we stand behind it, and that other people are participating to make it better, and update it, and that you can get it quickly. Looking ahead, there’s going to be times when it’s not strictly our data. Sometimes it will be data that has been uploaded from other people or from people in the community who want to take advantage of the data platform. So it’s really the pipes and the platform that we’re building that make this kind of data and sharing possible.</p>
<p><strong>NE: You sold your first company to Google. The issue came up that you don’t need the funds. You could fund this on your own. Explain why you sought funding.</strong></p>
<p><strong>GE: </strong>I did fund the company for a little while. But I knew that our mission is very audacious and in order to become the ubiquitous data layer for the Internet, to be the obvious place that a developer would go to first to get data into their application, it&#8217;s a huge, tall order, and something that’s going to take a lot of technology and marketing effort and strategic guidance. The types of people that we brought in on our angel round and then the people we’re bringing onto the board have a lot of operational experience. Also, you never know when an idea is so big that you want to raise money down the line. If you want to do that it makes sense to build bridges with the financial community as early as possible, in case it does become a more capital-intensive business. This is a new category and we feel like we have a good understanding of it, and things can change quickly, and if it does, we want to be positioned with a good team who can help us navigate the different opportunities that will certainly arise.</p>
<p><strong>NE: So now that you&#8217;ve landed the funding, what&#8217;s the first order of business? </strong></p>
<p><strong>GE:</strong> The challenge is always scaling correctly and quickly. I think we&#8217;re positioned well for this. We have a humming machine here. The management team is in place and we&#8217;ve been working on this for a few years now. And we have a great culture in place with people who are really passionate about making data available. However, hiring the engineering talent is taking up a huge amount of time. That&#8217;s the number one thing on my priority list for the short term.<br />
<strong><br />
NE: How do you find the best engineers? Is there a trick to it?</strong><br />
<strong><br />
GE: </strong> I&#8217;d have to say that having worked at Google for three and-a-half years was the perfect place to learn what a deep and strong engineering culture was all about. I also got a lot of hiring experience at Google&#8217;s Santa Monica office. I don&#8217;t think there&#8217;s one trick. I think there are signals that a person is not just looking for a job, but for an opportunity to make extremely important intellectual contributions. And also I&#8217;m looking for people who want to make contributions not just to a project but to the world. You look for quick thinking and passion, and a history of doing things beyond what the job requires. I love it when I see people who have contributed to open-source projects on their own time. That demonstrates that they&#8217;re trying to contribute to society but also that they like working on important tools that make a difference.</p>

<p>Full-length episodes of shows like NBC&#8217;s &#8220;The Office,&#8221; CBS&#8217;s &#8220;CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,&#8221; and ABC&#8217;s &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; can&#8217;t be viewed on Google TV, a service that allows people to access the Internet and search for Web videos on their television screens, as well as to search live TV listings. Logitech International S.A. and Sony Corp. began selling devices running the software this month.</p>
<p>Spokespeople for the three networks confirmed that they are blocking the episodes on their websites from playing on Google TV, although both ABC and NBC allow promotional clips to work using the service. ABC is owned by Walt Disney Co., CBS is part of CBS Corp., and NBC is a unit of General Electric Co.&#8217;s NBC Universal.</p>

Might the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091102/apples-itunes-pitch-tv-for-30-a-month/">&#8220;best of TV&#8221; iTunes subscription offering</a> the company has been pitching to TV networks since last November be primarily intended for that device, which Apple is positioning as the successor to its sleeper AppleTV platform? With company executives still dismissing AppleTV as a &#8220;hobby&#8221; and TV itself becoming a more personal, intimate experience, it’s worth thinking about. </p>
<p>Consider this scenario from Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett.</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>
Imagine a portable set top box, but with its own killer screen. When in the home, it would be docked in a cradle connected to iTunes via a wired broadband pipe. Navigation of programming guides and iTunes listings would occur on the iPad, using an intuitive touch interface. Output would go directly to the wide-screen TV on the wall&#8230;until you left the house. Then, you’d simply pop the device out of its cradle and take it with you. And in the process, you’d be taking your TV with you as well. A 3G (and eventually 4G) wireless connection would allow you to keep watching live TV in the back of the car or cab. Once you got on the airplane you could choose from a library of your favorite shows saved on your DVR&#8230;which also happens to be a half-inch thick ergonomically gorgeous high definition tilt-sensitive screen that fits comfortably in your hands.
</p></blockquote>
<p>A dockable, portable set-top box with LED-backlit widescreen display? Seems a bit of a stretch at this point. And it would be enormously bandwidth-intensive. But it’s not entirely inconceivable, is it? </p>
<p><strong>UPDATE: </strong> Mark Sigal recently made <a href="http://radar.oreilly.com/2010/01/the-chess-grandmaster-apples-i.html">a similar observation over at O’Reilly Radar</a>, using MLB&#8217;s iPad app as an example:</p>
<blockquote><p>Similarly, MLB (Major League Baseball) showcased their MLB app, which overlays graphics, information feeds, video clips and live game programming in a way that is simultaneously immersive, interactive and highly entertaining. It is both suggestive of a media-centric killer app for the IPad and a bellwether for the future of TV Anywhere, yet another reason that I believe Apple&#8217;s ambitions with respect to Apple TV remain very much alive.</p></blockquote>

You can be a relatively staid Web 1.0 giant, too. eBay (EBAY) is warning developers who build programs that incorporate the online marketplace&#8217;s engine about a security breach.</p>
<p>In letters to sent Monday to 90,000 developers who work on eBay&#8217;s Developers Program, the company warns about a security hole that could cause problems, but hasn&#8217;t yet. It also takes pains to point out that the security flaw doesn&#8217;t affect eBay customers themselves. eBay <a href="http://developer.ebay.com/businessbenefits/aboutus/">says</a> third-party software now accounts for 25 percent of its listings.</p>
<p>An eBay spokesman tells me that eBay came across the weakness itself not because a hacker had exploited it, and that the company is acting &#8220;out of an abundance of caution,&#8221; which is a term the eBay folks seem to favor (see email text below). &#8220;The information that *may* have been compromised consisted of basic contact information that could potentially be used in a phishing attack. At this point, we have not identified any unusual patterns in our developer accounts and we are notifying them and requesting they change their developer passwords out of an abundance of caution [sic].&#8221;</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the complete text of eBay&#8217;s heads-up letter:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Hello [redacted], this is Kumar Kandaswamy, and I manage the eBay Developers Program. I’d like you to read this important message about account safety. The safety and security of the eBay Developers Program is a top priority. While we believe that people are basically good, we also must live with the reality that there are fraudsters out there who have made it their illicit &#8220;profession&#8221; to find ways to exploit others on the Internet.</p>
<p>Occasionally, fraudsters attempt to gain unauthorized access to the eBay Developers Program. eBay has recently identified a means by which someone could gain access to eBay Developers Program account information. This type of access DOES NOT allow the capture of financial or other sensitive information, such as credit card or bank account information or Social Security numbers.</p>
<p>Fortunately, we have not detected any unusual activity with any Developer account.  Out of an abundance of caution and to help ensure the security of the eBay Developers Program, we are requiring that all developers take the following steps:</p>

<li>Siri CEO Dag Kittlaus comes out. He introduces himself and the product. It&#8217;s been many years of work in the making, he says.</li>
<li>Siri is about making interactions between the Web and user much simpler. It is focusing on mobile first. He shows the interface on an iPhone with both a Google screen and Siri screen side by side. Dag types in a flight query to both.</li>
<li>Siri figures out what you mean. Dag asks it a question, compares the results between Siri and Google (GOOG). Walt: Google is terrible! Dag: It gets really interesting when you ask it do a service. Walt: Can&#8217;t Bing do this?</li>
<li>It can take actions on your behalf too. For instance, &#8220;Il Forniao [Italian restaurant] reservations tonight for 3 at 5pm.&#8221; Siri takes your information and pulls up the reservation function for the restaurant.</li>
<li>Siri is sort of a giant mashup of services, Dag says.</li>
<li>It&#8217;s &#8220;Carol Bartz,&#8221; not &#8220;Sheryl Bartz,&#8221; Dag. Now let&#8217;s try asking for a movie. Siri returns the closest location and time for &#8220;Angels and Demons.&#8221; Siri has an API.</li>
<li>&#8220;Get red sox yankees tickets in boston&#8221;&#8211;this is one for Walt, says Dag. $1,649&#8211;the price is wrong? But Siri delivers. Shows a map of the stadium and seats/tickets.</li>
<li>Walt: so Google is constantly stupid, we see that now. But is it only good for certain services? How about ballet? Dag: It learns, we break it out into various areas of expertise. Right now, for instance, it doesn&#8217;t do TV listings. Siri has a Q&amp;A function. Dag asks a question to the True Knowledge Web service. Kara: Ask it &#8220;How old is Kara?&#8221; Siri&#8217;s answer: &#8220;Dag, it&#8217;s not polite to ask about women&#8217;s ages.&#8221; It&#8217;s arguably broken Asimov&#8217;s Second Law already. Someone get John Connor, just in case.</li>
<li>Now Dag is demoing on the Apple (AAPL) iPhone, speaking into the phone. Voice recognition is pretty good. He tells it: &#8220;Find a plumber near my house.&#8221; Siri pulls up a list of nearby plumbers. Kara: Do you have to have a voice like yours for it to work? Dag: It gets pretty good, it learns. Kara: I like.</li>
<li>Walt: Will it be in the App Store? Dag: This summer, and it will be a free app. Walt: Revenue stream? Dag: Tie-ins with the other platforms, i.e., OpenTable. We&#8217;ll start with mobile and then build it out.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dipping a toe into the real-estate market these days can feel a lot like taking your car to the mechanic: If you don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re doing and don&#8217;t trust the professional you hired, you may feel like someone is taking advantage of you. Thankfully, the Web&#8217;s ability to demystify intimidating topics has brought what was once considered insider real-estate knowledge to the masses.</p>
<p>This week, I tested <a href="http://Trulia.com" rel="external">Trulia.com</a>, a real-estate site that&#8217;s geared toward helping people who are ready to buy. Trulia combines a simple approach to real estate that anyone can grasp, with enough market stats to excite number-crunching types. It also offers a community where regular users can ask 200,000 real-estate professionals questions without fear of being hounded by agents because their emails are hidden.</p>

<p>Trulia has been around since 2005, but started out as a site that only posted local real-estate listings in California and New York. After expanding to the national market in 2006, it added other features like pricing heat maps (color-coded to indicate prices in an area), comparable listings, an online community and automatically generated newsfeeds about specific properties and areas. Last summer, Trulia went mobile with a free iPhone app that uses GPS to find nearby open houses.</p>
<p>Starting Wednesday, Trulia will offer CompareIt, a tool that lets users choose five properties for sale to directly compare with one another. Before now, Trulia just generated a list of comparable properties that sold or are for sale at the bottom of a listing.</p>
<p>I only used Trulia for a week, and I&#8217;m not a typical buyer since I was just looking &#8212; for now. But I got a lot out of the site, especially by browsing maps of neighborhoods that I know well (I&#8217;m picky about my preferred location) and asking questions of the Trulia community. Its iPhone app listed nearby open houses according to my search criteria and also worked on my iPod touch as long as I was in a Wi-Fi zone.</p>
<p>Another big plus to Trulia is Newsfeed, a list that shows up on the home page with content that&#8217;s automatically generated and personalized according to your past search locations. It is updated every day and spits out stats like the number of price reductions, open houses and new listings in an area. It shows an area&#8217;s average listing price, median sales price, number of foreclosures and average price per square foot, among other things. These data are a boon for people who don&#8217;t have the time or inclination to look this stuff up, and it aggregates the data into one intelligible, quick snapshot.</p>
<p>I found some flaws in Trulia, like the way it accidentally listed a property that was sold five months earlier. Trulia said it relies on partners for accurate listings, and those partners get their data from Multiple Listing Services or local brokers and agents, therefore Trulia&#8217;s data are only as good as its partners&#8217;. (At least one other real-estate site also accidentally listed the already-sold condo for sale.) Another problem occurred when I tried to use the CompareIt chart on Washington, D.C., properties; Trulia said the tool doesn&#8217;t work for D.C. due to a bug that it hopes to fix. Finally, properties saved on the iPhone app won&#8217;t transfer to your Trulia Web site account. The company says it hopes to fix the iPhone issue.</p>

<p>One of Trulia&#8217;s competitors is <a href="http://Zillow.com" rel="external">Zillow.com</a>, which displays its own price estimates for all houses in the U.S. (for sale or not) to give people an idea of the real-estate value in an area. The two sites are similar in some ways: Both show heat maps, display data about nearby schools, have mortgage calculators and use online communities to answer questions. But Zillow doesn&#8217;t offer a stat-packed Newsfeed or an iPhone app like Trulia.</p>
<p>After browsing through Trulia, I found a variety of properties that suited my target price range and location preferences. One place had lots of big windows and a renovated kitchen, according to the photos and information listed on its detailed Trulia Web page. A shortcut on the page made it easy for me to share this place with three friends to see what they thought. I even posed a question to the Trulia community about the property: Does this unit have a private entrance, or does it share an entrance with the five other units in the building?</p>
<p>Ironically, this was the property that was already sold, as I found out when a real-estate agent responded to my question. It took him just 15 minutes (Trulia says this is within five minutes of the average response time) to post a response saying that he was familiar with the listing and that the place sold five months earlier. Trulia has since updated this property&#8217;s status.</p>
<p>Other questions that I asked of the community were answered within 20 minutes. In one instance, I asked a general question about the best time of year to buy in Washington, D.C., and three real-estate agents responded almost immediately; two were from my area and offered their advice &#8212; and their services &#8212; but one from Florida chimed in simply to offer some encouragement. Each responder was clearly identified with a name, classification (i.e. real-estate pro) and photo. Within a couple hours, four more people responded.</p>
<p>These questions and answers are shared with everyone on Trulia, and I clicked on a thumbs-up icon to vote for the answer I found most helpful.</p>
<p>Email alerts can be set up through Trulia so you&#8217;re notified if a property you like dips below a certain price, or if there are new blog posts about certain categories like financing, crime or environmentally friendly properties.</p>
<p>The CompareIt tool worked to see how properties (excluding those in D.C.) stacked up against one another, up to five at a time. These charts arm people with more statistics and (likely) more negotiating power.</p>
<p>The real-estate world can be intimidating, now more than ever. Though sites like Trulia won&#8217;t solve this problem completely, they could make the weighty decision of buying a house a little bit easier.</p>

In a research note late yesterday, Merrill Lynch Internet analyst Justin Post said checks with the Professional eBay Sellers Association indicate that eBay&#8217;s gross merchandise value growth in the U.S. &#8220;turned negative&#8221; in September. Post says &#8220;channel checks remain troubling,&#8221; and that the slowdown reflects a demotion of eBay listings in Google (GOOG) search results as well as an influx of listings that are less attractive to buyers.</p>
