<p>Earlier today, Harvard University and New Enterprise Associates announced the <a href="www.experimentfund.com">Experiment Fund</a>, aimed at making sure that future Mark Zuckerbergs and Bill Gates can stay on campus and innovate without having to head West.</p>
<p>The irony of the pair of legendary entrepreneurs dropping out &#8212; decades apart &#8212; of the even more legendary university to start two of tech most significant companies, Facebook and Microsoft. </p>
<p>No longer, apparently.</p>
<p>The early-stage incubator, which will award funding to four to six start-ups in amounts from $250,000 to $500,000. It will focus on seed ventures in the Cambridge, Mass. area around Harvard, which includes many other schools such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.</p>
<p>The Experiment Fund came from an idea born Harvard&#8217;s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, which involved NEA. Today, SEAS Dean Cherry Murray hosted an event that unveiled the initiative.</p>
<p>But, while faculty members will advise for the fund, Harvard has no financial stake.</p>
<p>In an interview NEA&#8217;s Patrick Chung said the intent was to enable talented students to &#8220;build a company here in Boston rather than have to go elsewhere.&#8221;</p>
<p>NEA will have full-time staffers working on the fund, investing in a wide range of companies. It has already backed a health app company, as well as a live Internet television offering. </p>
<p>&#8220;There has been an envy of the left coast, certainly,&#8221; said Chung. &#8220;Now, these talented engineers don&#8217;t have to leave when they reach the boundaries of the university where the ideas are formed.&#8221;</p>
<p>Added Chung: &#8220;They can walk right out of class and into a place that can make those start-ups real.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, let&#8217;s hope the third time&#8217;s a charm.</p>

<p>The execs at Yahoo were huddled yesterday and also today, getting ready for its investor day tomorrow morning.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s probably a good idea, especially since the Silicon Valley Internet giant has to come up with a good answer to how it is settling the recent kerfuffle with Chinese partner <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110515/alibaba-and-yahoo-why-cant-we-all-just-get-along/">Alibaba Group</a>. </p>
<p>A settlement announcement over the spinoff of Alibaba&#8217;s Alipay payments unit would be the best thing Yahoo could deliver by tomorrow, of course.</p>
<p>All parties&#8211;Alibaba, Yahoo and Japan&#8217;s SoftBank&#8211;I spoke to said a resolution was still being worked on, but one assumes reaching one sooner than later would be a big coup for Yahoo.</p>
<p>Barring that, China will surely be Question No. 1&#8211;and likely Nos. 2 through 23&#8211;from about 200 Wall Street analysts and big shareholders gathered from 8 am to 2 pm at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose to hear about how Yahoo is doing in 2011.</p>
<p>Given that the China problem has kept Yahoo stock stuck in the $16 doldrums for weeks now, after it had seen some progress before that, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz and the passel of top execs presenting&#8211;Ross Levinsohn, Blake Irving and Tim Morse, among others&#8211;will have to scratch that itchy itch first before moving on to other questions.</p>
<p>In the interests of making the day interesting&#8211;and because press is not invited&#8211;I am here to help those investors without a clue of what to ask.</p>
<p>Thus, my list, in no particular order:</p>
<p>* Now that a newish management structure is in place, what is the big vision for Yahoo going forward?</p>
<p>* Please explain in detail the issues raised in the recent earnings call with the search and online advertising partnership with Microsoft, and should the deal be re-negotiated?</p>
<p>* Do you need to make more cuts in staff&#8211;which seems to have creeped back up in size?</p>
<p>* Why is Yahoo still in search in such a significant and expensive way, especially since market share is declining?</p>
<p>* How is the display market faring and how does Yahoo plan to innovate its flagship advertising business?</p>
<p>* Engagement is a key metric these days, so how is Yahoo going to improve its customer relationships, besides saying it will?</p>
<p>* What new and innovative products are in the pipeline&#8211;and you may not trot out Livestand for the umpteenth time as an example, unless you want me to start calling it Not-Flipboard&#8211;and when will they launch?</p>
<p>* Has Yahoo considered other ownership options that would better reward long-suffering shareholders?</p>
<p>* And, oh yes, China. Let&#8217;s not forget about China.</p>
<p>(Although media is not invited to the investor confab, I will be covering it via a live stream Yahoo is offering&#8211;you didn&#8217;t think I would miss it?)</p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Wal-Mart Stores paid just over $300 million in cash for Kosmix.</p>
<p>The six-year-old Mountain View, Calif.-based company&#8211;which has built a social media platform that organizes content by topic&#8211;has raised $55 million from a large group of Silicon Valley venture firms.</p>
<p>The acquisition by the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retail giant <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110418/wal-mart-acquires-kosmix-to-move-into-social-and-mobile/">was announced earlier today</a>.</p>
<p>Wal-Mart did not disclose terms of the deal, which is focused on building out its social and mobile e-commerce offerings.</p>
<p>The price for Kosmix is a pricey one to do so, but traditional retailers need to jump into the digital market now dominated by app-happy, smartphone-wielding customers.</p>
<p>Kosmix will join the newly formed @WalmartLabs, the company said.</p>
<p>Kosmix was founded by the team that sold pioneering e-commerce company Junglee to Amazon in 1998.</p>
<p>After that, Venky Harinarayan and Anand Rajaraman raised $55 million in funding from Time Warner Investments, Accel Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners, DAG Ventures, Bezos Expeditions, and angel investors Jon Miller and Ed Zander.</p>
<p>As eMoney&#8217;s Tricia Duryee wrote earlier today:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The company may be best known for powering TweetBeat, which it defines as a real-time social media filter for live events. It also operates Kosmix.com, where people go to discover social content by topic, and it operates RightHealth, which it claims to be one of the top three health and medical information sites by reach.</p></blockquote>
<p>One interesting aspect of the deal: Accel&#8217;s senior partner Jim Breyer&#8211;who was not the principal VC in the Kosmix investment&#8211;is on the board of Wal-Mart. Presumably, he recused himself from the decision.</p>

<p>Conan O&#8217;Brien has been all over the South by Southwest festival this week, hawking a new documentary about his time wandering in the late-night talk television wilderness after he left &#8220;The Tonight Show&#8221; last year.</p>
<p>That included a lively live interview with Facebook&#8217;s Randi Zuckerberg on Saturday, as well as a series of appearances related to &#8220;Conan O&#8217;Brien Can&#8217;t Stop.&#8221;</p>
<p>His hysterical journey, of course, was deftly played out by O&#8217;Brien all over the Internet, which was definitely on &#8220;Team Coco.&#8221;</p>
<p>The documentary, which will be distributed in the U.S. in  a multi-platform deal with AT&#038;T, follows O&#8217;Brien on his &#8220;Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television&#8221; tour.</p>

<p>Yes, it&#8217;s actually called Mogwee, which was the codename for the new mobile social communications service being launched tonight by Ning, the high-profile social networking platform co-founded by Silicon Valley icon and investor Marc Andreessen.</p>
<p>Part Twitter, part SMS, part Path and any number of such social start-ups, Mogwee actually stands for &#8220;more great weekends,&#8221; said CEO Jason Rosenthal, who has been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100719/ning-ceo-jason-rosenthal-talks-about-premium-conversion-of-social-networking-platform">focusing Ning on premium offerings</a>.</p>
<p>BoomTown interviewed Rosenthal and Andreessen&#8211;who is also chairman of Ning&#8211;at an overpriced tea salon in San Francisco last week about the latest entrant into the crowded socializing of smartphones market.</p>
<p>The Mogwee app was approved today for the Apple iPhone and iPad. The Google Android version is coming in about a week and the one for Research in Motion&#8217;s BlackBerry is to come after that.</p>
<p>Also on deck: Integration with big social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Currently, the only way to bring in friends is via your cell phone&#8217;s address book.</p>
<p>Once loaded, you can use Mogwee to chat live, share photos, play games, make analog plans and&#8211;<em>horrors</em>&#8211;throw sheep.</p>
<p>As you can see from the video and screenshots below, a user creates any series of &#8220;Hangouts&#8221;&#8211;such as a whiskey one by Andreessen&#8211;for real-time groups or one-to-one chat.</p>

<p>In January I talked to you about the custom social revolution that is fueling our business as more and more customers come to us to create powerful, custom social websites for their group, band, cause, classroom or business. 		<description><![CDATA[The Grammys generated a flurry of online interest last night, but the music industry's biggest event of the year is AWOL this morning. Opportunity wasted.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files//2008/10/victrola.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-69" title="victrola" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files//2008/10/victrola.jpg" alt="" width="180" height="240" /></a>I didn&#8217;t watch a second of last night&#8217;s Grammy Awards, but I&#8217;m pretty sure I caught all of it, anyway.</p>
<p>My Twitterstream was dominated by snarky play-by-play, and the rest of the Web was doing the same thing. Even the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal put Grammy liveblogs on their homepages.</p>
<p>So now it might be nice to head online and actually see&#8211;and hear&#8211;what I missed. No dice.</p>
<p>The official <a href="http://www.grammy.com/">Grammy site</a>, run by the National Academy of Recording Arts &amp; Sciences, has plenty of clips, but none from the CBS broadcast itself&#8211;it&#8217;s all backstage, or red carpet or other footage I don&#8217;t care about. <a href="http://www.cbs.com/">CBS.com</a> doesn&#8217;t have anything, and neither does <a href="http://www.tv.com/">TV.com</a>, CBS&#8217;s mini-Hulu.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Google&#8217;s YouTube, the place where I really expect to see clips, is doing a very good/frustrating job of keeping the site scrubbed free of amateur uploads. You can find some stuff, but it takes work, and the quality is poor, and I&#8217;m pretty sure it&#8217;s getting removed quickly after it goes up.</p>
<p>So while I really want to see Arcade Fire&#8217;s performance&#8211;my Twitter pals were ecstatic about it&#8211;right now the only thing I can find is grainy footage of  Lady Gaga doing yet another Madonna&#8230;homage. This may or may not be available by the time you read this:</p>

<p>A CBS rep notes that Grammy performances &#8220;aren&#8217;t typically available online due to rights clearance issues,&#8221; and I&#8217;m sure that&#8217;s true. Any given song can have lots of different owners, and getting all of them to agree to put it on the Web can be a huge hassle. On the other hand, it&#8217;s not an insurmountable challenge&#8211;that&#8217;s why we have <a href="http://www.vevo.com/">Vevo.com</a>, a Web site dedicated to nothing but music videos.</p>
<p>Left unsaid here is that big live events like the Grammys are now TV&#8217;s most valuable commodity, and the people who produce big live events continue to struggle with the Web. But more and more of them are getting it&#8211;even the very uptight NFL is putting highlight videos up on its site <em>while the games are in progress</em>.</p>
<p>The Grammys are already being augmented very nicely by the Web, which provided it with endless free promotion last night. But now that the live event isn&#8217;t anymore, you&#8217;d think the music industry, which can use all the promotion it could get, would be pushing very, very hard to let people see what they missed last night.</p>
<p>Who knows. It might even prompt someone to, you know, buy some music.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Is that the future of TV? Twitter's ad guys would like to think so.]]></description>

So why is the movie&#8217;s title now trending on Twitter?</p>
<p>Because <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/HowardStern">Stern</a> has spent the afternoon delivering a scene-by-scene, Tweet-by-Tweet, DVD-style <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/HowardStern/status/36559280542851072">commentary</a> while the movie has been playing on Time Warner&#8217;s HBO. It&#8217;s an incredibly simple idea, and a surprisingly compelling one: <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/pkafka/status/36553118015696896">I gave in</a> about 30 minutes ago and have had a hard time doing anything else since.</p>
<p><a rel="lightbox" href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/stern-jameson-tweet.png"><img class="alignnone size-large wp-image-29743" title="stern jameson tweet" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/stern-jameson-tweet-600x216.png" alt="" width="380" height="136" /></a><br />
And while the movie will have ended by the time you read this, my hunch is you&#8217;ll be hearing about it for some time.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because the idea of using Twitter to augment TV&#8211;particularly live TV&#8211;is something that <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110107/live-twitter-ceo-dick-costolo-at-dces/">Twitter&#8217;s executives have been actively promoting</a> for some time now. Both because people are already doing it on their own, and because they think it will help them capture some of the huge TV ad marketplace, which still dwarves online.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s taken the DVR out of the equation again,&#8221; <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110110/dces-highlights-video-twitter-ceo-dick-costolo-%C2%A1ole/">Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said last month</a>. &#8220;People feel like they have to watch the show, while it&#8217;s going on.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Twitter ad sales boss Adam Bain used today&#8217;s (spontaneous?) Stern seminar to expand on that message, and <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/adambain/status/36554630204751873"> hand out instructions to the TV business</a>.<br />

<p>And I think he&#8217;s sort of right. I&#8217;m very happy to Twitter away, and read responses, during a certain kind of TV show. Such as a live event like the Oscars&#8211;one that I sort of care about, but not so much that I can&#8217;t look away for a few minutes.</p>
<p>But I&#8217;ve got no interest in twittering during &#8220;Justified,&#8221; because I really, <em>really</em> like that show. And there aren&#8217;t many celebrities whose tweets can get me to watch a show I don&#8217;t like.</p>
<p>Still, as I type this, I&#8217;m half-watching the last few minutes of a 14-year-old movie I haven&#8217;t thought about for a long time. So maybe the Twitter folks are on to something&#8230;.</p>

<p>This debut was supposed to happen a few weeks ago in San Francisco, with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110113/a-delay-for-the-daily-apple-news-corp-push-back-launch-date/">Rupert Murdoch and Steve Jobs sharing stage time</a>. Instead, Murdoch will show off his new publication at the Guggenheim in New York, with Apple content boss Eddy Cue stepping in for Jobs.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve got a very good idea of what to expect: <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110201/rupert-murdoch-gives-guests-a-sneak-peek-of-tomorrows-daily-tonight-heres-what-theyll-see/?mod=ATD_search">A newspaper that&#8217;s both old-fashioned and cutting-edge</a>, which will sell for 99 cents a week or <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/pkafka/statuses/32769157720186880">$40 a year</a>. And the best way to experience the new publication will be on an iPad, not at a museum.</p>
<p>Still, it will be interesting to hear News Corp. pitch this one in real time, and to see how it leverages all of its resources and a very rare Apple endorsement. (This Web site, we should note, is owned by News Corp. as well.)</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am</strong>: Greetings! So excited to be in the Guggenheim that I&#8217;m starting this one a few minutes early.</p>
<p><strong>10:44 am</strong>: And here&#8217;s Jon Miller, who has been shepherding this thing at News Corp. Here&#8217;s some fresh scoop! The Daily will be be live onstage for the demo, he says, but won&#8217;t appear at the app store until noon.</p>

<p><strong>10:52 am</strong>: WAAAAAAY More interesting is that Engadget&#8217;s Joanna Stern being hassled for daring to take out a camera during a press conference. She is being moved three seats back. Where that&#8217;s OK, apparently.</p>
<p><strong>10:56 am</strong>: Pre-launch music, btw: Some kinda samba thing going on. Festive and, dare I say, a smidge bit sexy. Rowr!</p>
<p><strong>10:58 am</strong>: Slightly curious is that registration staff told media that they&#8217;ll have &#8220;review units&#8221; available after presser. But everyone in media has an iPad, right? It&#8217;s required, no?</p>
<p>Perhaps the notion is that the presser will end before noon, and the Daily won&#8217;t be available until then, so if you want to get hands-on in the meantime, that&#8217;s the way to go. Which would be smart!</p>
<p>On the other hand, if they&#8217;re simply handing out free &#8220;review&#8221; units to the press, well, that&#8217;s kinda smart too. Because the press likes free stuff.</p>
<p><strong>11:03 am</strong>: Our crack tech guy Adam Tow tells me TheDaily.com site is now saying that the app will be available at noon ET. I can&#8217;t see that on my screen, but I&#8217;ll take his word for it.</p>
<p>Especially because that&#8217;s what Jon Miller said a few minutes ago.</p>

<p>Angelo: Best thing to do is to save articles you care about. And it will also be archived on the Web. Internal archiving not there for 1.0.</p>
<p><strong>Q: When will other pubs start using subscription option?</strong></p>
<p>Announcement &#8220;very soon for other news publications.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: How will you measure impressions, etc. for advertising?</strong></p>
<p>Miller: Will have tech built into app for that. I should have mentioned during presentation that we love advertisers.</p>
<p><strong>Q: For Rupe: How will you measure success?</strong></p>
<p>A: We want to sell millions. But keep costs low. We have spent $30 million so far, &#8220;all of which has been written off in figures we&#8217;ll announce today.&#8221; But overall costs $500,000 a week going forward.</p>

<p><strong>Q: What&#8217;s the political tone of this thing. Centrist, right?</strong></p>
<p>A: Murdoch: &#8220;The editorial position will be in the hands of the editor.&#8221; Cue Angelo, who sorta hedges. On op-ed page, &#8220;We&#8217;re patriotic.&#8221;</p>

<p>A: Angelo: Thinking it through. We know that people spend a lot of time with these apps&#8211;35 minutes, 40 minutes. &#8220;It&#8217;s unbelievable.&#8221; So how do you create content rich enough to keep people there?</p>
<p><strong>Q: What did Steve Jobs say about this in the last couple of days?</strong></p>
<p>A: Murdoch: &#8220;He did call me last week&#8221; and told me app was &#8220;really terrific. He was extremely flattering.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: How will people find this stuff, since it&#8217;s not on the Web?</strong></p>
<p>A: Cue: We&#8217;ve downloaded 10 billion apps. People can find this stuff.</p>
<p>Miller: We feel really good about this. We didn&#8217;t want to make compromises.</p>
<p><strong>Q: I ask about what&#8217;s available on the Web.</strong></p>
<p>A: Some of it will be mirrored on the Web, when it can be done technically. [Sorry, hard to type and write.]</p>

<p><strong>11:47 am: Q: How do you balance a subscription model with a large audience that advertisers want?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: &#8220;They&#8217;d pay a much lower rate per thousand if it was free. They realize it&#8217;s something that people want.&#8221; And we can tell them more about who sees it. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just scattered out there&#8230;.We&#8217;ll draw a better class of advertiser, and a better rate.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>11:48 am: Q: What&#8217;s the split between ad and subscription revenue?</strong></p>
<p>Miller: Subscription will be larger at start, and then eventually 50-50, &#8220;which is the magic number.&#8221;</p>

No surprise: Wall Street thinks it&#8217;s going to be very good!</p>
<p>The street is looking for revenue to jump more than 20 percent, and profits to grow at just a slightly smaller pace. If you&#8217;re a bottom-line person, the consensus calls for net revenue of $6.05 billion and earnings of $8.07 a share (or more&#8211;some &#8220;consensus&#8221; numbers I&#8217;ve seen go as high as $6.06 billion and $8.09 a share).</p>
<p>Those numbers reflect the strength of Google&#8217;s core search business, but as usual, Wall Street would also like to hear about mobile, video and display ads.</p>
<p>And, as usual, it shouldn&#8217;t expect much: Last quarter <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101014/google-q3-beats-earnings-estimates/">Google made a big point about unveiling a few limited metrics</a> for those businesses. But they were&#8230;limited.</p>
<p>Still, it&#8217;s always worth listening to Google&#8217;s call, which I&#8217;ll be doing this afternoon. Check back then for a link to live coverage.</p>
<p>And who knows, the Google guys might tip their hand! Last quarter, analysts asked what the company thought about daily deal sites like Groupon, and product SVP Jonathan Rosenberg allowed that the industry was &#8220;a very exciting and hot space.” Turns out it was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101129/googles-groupon-offer-5-3-billion-with-700-million-earnout/">$6 billion</a>&#8211;but not <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101203/breaking-groupongoogle-talks-end/">more</a>&#8211;worth of exciting!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Well, we didn&#8217;t learn much new about Verizon Wireless&#8217;s new network or devices at the <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110106/verizon-ceo-takes-the-ces-stage/">Ivan Seidenberg keynote</a> on Thursday, but he did say that the company would have a preview of its LTE device lineup at this afternoon&#8217;s press conference.<br />

Here&#8217;s hoping there are a few surprises here beyond the previously announced Motorola Atrix and Xoom.</p>

<p><strong>1:05 pm</strong>: Well, despite timely warnings to get in our seats beginning at 12:45, it&#8217;s now five minutes after and the techno is still pumping.</p>
<p><strong>1:11 pm</strong>: Okay. Getting started. Loud music gets louder. Cue video.</p>
<p>Tony Melone and Marni Walden take the stage and CEO Daniel Mead (at least I think it is Mead) is doing an intro.</p>
<p><strong>1:15 pm</strong>: Another video now playing with partners. Since HTC CEO Peter Chou is in there, I think it is probably safe to say their oft-rumored LTE smartphone will make an appearance.</p>
<p><strong>1:16 pm</strong>: Samsung and Ericsson execs also in the video.</p>
<p><strong>1:17 pm</strong>: Verizon exec now touting the advantages of its 4G network including its spectrum, which it says will give it the best in-building coverage.</p>
<p>Also talking about how it is sharing its spectrum with rural service providers.</p>
<p><strong>1:18 pm</strong>: Mead: &#8220;We&#8217;re very pleased to be part of bringing broadband to rural America.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>1:21 pm</strong>: Mead hands off to CTO Tony Melone to talk 4G and LTE.</p>
<p>Melone says that the company knows there is a lot of skepticism of the company&#8217;s move to go straight to LTE but that the bet is paying off with more networks and running faster than planned.</p>
<p>&#8220;The customer feedback we are getting is everything we had hoped for and then some,&#8221; Melone says.</p>

<p>Thirty-six months from now we will have the nation covered with LTE, Melone says. Two-thirds of the population will be covered in 2012. This year alone, he says, Verizon will add 140 new markets, including places like Little Rock, Detroit and Sioux Falls.</p>

<p>Next up, Skype&#8217;s CEO talks about a new partnership that will allow for Skype to be always on and integrated into the address book of all of Verizon&#8217;s LTE smartphones,</p>
<p><strong>1:34 pm</strong>: He&#8217;s followed by HTC CEO Peter Chou, who introduces the HTC Thunderbolt.</p>
<p>Chou says he&#8217;s been personally testing and using the Thunderbolt, which features the new Skype video chatting along with HTC&#8217;s Sense user interface.</p>
<p>&#8220;Let me tell you, it&#8217;s blazing fast,&#8221; Chou says.</p>
<p>Other features include a built-in 4G hotspot and a 4.3-inch Super LCD screen.</p>
<p><strong>1:37 pm</strong>: He thanks Qualcomm and Google engineers that worked together to create the device, so guessing this one isn&#8217;t using Nvidia&#8217;s Tegra chip.</p>
<p>Next up is Electronic Arts VP Travis Boatman. EA&#8217;s mobile games lineup ranges from Monopoly and Tetris to Need for Speed and the FIFA 11 soccer game. </p>
<p>The new mobile version of Rock Band for Verizon&#8217;s LTE network lets people form a band and remotely jam over the network.</p>
<p>Samsung executive goes onstage to show off three devices for the LTE network, One is a mobile hotspot, one is a smartphone and the other is a 4G version of the Galaxy Tab.</p>
<p>Phone packs 4.3-inch Super Amoled Plus display, which is said to boost colors and offer improved display. It&#8217;s got an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with HD video and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat.</p>
<p>The tablet has a 1.2GHz processor developed by Samsung, while the hotspots provide connections to up to five users at a time.</p>
<p>Most impressive is the fact that the Samsung executive pulled all three devices out of various pockets.</p>
<p>Marni Walden shows off the remaining devices&#8211;a Novatel MiFi hotpot that works with both 3G and 4G networks.</p>
<p>There is also a Compaq Netbook, an HP notebook, as well as the previously announced Motorola Xoom and Motorola Droid Bionic.</p>
<p><strong>1:47 pm</strong>: On to Q&#038;A (hoping laptop No. 2 holds out through the end of question time.)</p>
<p>First question has to do with LTE speeds, which often exceed the 5- to 12-megabit speeds promised. Mead says that the company&#8217;s goal is to meet the promised speed range once the network is fully loaded, something that is not the case today.</p>
<p>Next question is on battery life. Melone says the company believes it will be able to meet customer expectations in that regard.</p>
<p>The company says it won&#8217;t announce pricing or rate plans for the 4G products, beyond noting its current prices for 4G laptop cards and service.</p>
<p>As for simultaneous voice and data, Walden says the company intends that at least some of its 4G launch devices will support talking and accessing data at the same time.</p>
<p>&#8220;It could be on some devices and not all,&#8221; Walden says.</p>
<p>Walden also confirms all the phones it showed Thursday are running Android.</p>
<p><strong>1:55 pm</strong>: Asked about net neutrality, Mead says that what the industry needs is &#8220;unfettered development.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;We think the free market system works very well, and we don&#8217;t need a lot of heavy intervention.&#8221;</p>

But there has been nothing quiet about the latest financing behind Facebook, which has evaded the public markets by <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110102/by-the-numbers-goldman-sachs-buddies-up-with-facebook/">rigging a way</a> to privately sell $1.5 billion worth of shares through Goldman Sachs in a deal that values the company at $50 billion.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1972" title="YuriMilner" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/YuriMilner-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Tonight, an hour-long special on the topic will air at 9 pm ET on Bloomberg TV (and will be <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/tv/">streamed live on Bloomberg&#8217;s Web site</a>), featuring Yuri Milner, CEO of Digital Sky Technologies and one of the key investors who helped put together that deal. Unfortunately, while Bloomberg&#8217;s press release listed Milner as a &#8220;guest,&#8221; it neglected to mention that he won&#8217;t be an actual live guest (as initially reported here). Instead, clips from a Milner interview last year will be interspersed with current commentary from writers David Kirkpatrick, Paul Kedrosky and Bill Cohan, and marketing professor Scott Galloway.</p>
<p>Goldman has <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE70359V20110104">reportedly</a> given its clients limited information and only until the end of the week to pony up a minimum of $2 million to invest in Facebook. One Goldman customer told Reuters he felt like he was being expected to invest on &#8220;blind faith.&#8221;</p>
<p>BoomTown&#8217;s Kara Swisher yesterday <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110104/facebooks-questionable-stock-hijinks-feels-like-winklevii-2-0/">described</a> the Goldman-Facebook deal as &#8220;sneaky,&#8221; &#8220;elite&#8221; and &#8220;opaque.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here&#8217;s a logical, and cool, marriage between your iPad and your TV, brokered by Comcast: The cable company says it will let subscribers stream live TV to their tablets later this year.</p>
<p>The catch here is that the capability, which will be offered on Apple&#8217;s iPad as well as tablets running Google&#8217;s Android, will only work inside subscribers&#8217; homes.</p>
<p>So you still can&#8217;t watch a live episode of &#8220;Two and a Half Men&#8221; on your iPad in the airport, but you will be able to watch it in your kitchen, while your better half watches &#8220;Frontline&#8221; in the living room. Or whatever.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100819/great-an-immobile-mobile-tv-ipad-app/">Verizon announced its own version of this feature</a> (with the same limitations), for its FiOS TV subscribers last summer, but has yet to roll it out.</p>
<p>Comcast will be demoing the feature later today at a Citigroup investors conference, but won&#8217;t be providing details about timing, or if there will be any programming restrictions on what you can watch on your tablet.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s possible there could be some holdouts, but the cable giant ought to be able to offer just about everything, since there&#8217;s no issue with carriage rights or ad loads, etc.&#8211;tablet watchers will be watching whatever&#8217;s already on live TV.</p>
<p>The killer feature, of course, would be the ability to do this on-the-go, but we&#8217;re not there yet, and it may take awhile to get there. Mobile rights for video&#8211;especially live video&#8211;are a whole different ball game.</p>
<p>Meantime, though, Comcast is offering a half-step&#8211;as previously promised, it will let traveling iPad users start to watch a selection of on-demand content, via its <a href="http://www.xfinity.com/help/internet/mobile-tv-app/?xcr=1&#038;referrer=">Xfinity TV app</a>.</p>
<p>Comcast says it will offer some 3,000 TV shows and movies that iPad users can watch on-demand, over any network&#8211;AT&#038;T&#8217;s 3G, or Time Warner Cable&#8217;s broadband, or whatever. Once that feature is up and running, which should be shortly, we&#8217;ll be able to compare that catalog to the ones that Netflix and Hulu Plus are offering for $7.99 a month.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s the big picture here: Comcast and the other big cable providers, which continue to insist that cord-cutting isn&#8217;t real, want to make sure that it doesn&#8217;t become a reality, by offering their subscribers access to as much stuff, in as many places, as they can. It&#8217;s going to take years to find out whether that works or not, but best to start experimenting ASAP.</p>

I&#8217;m told there will be some mobile stuff, plus I&#8217;m still having withdrawal symptoms after seven years on the Redmond beat, so I&#8217;ll be providing live coverage starting at about 10 am PT.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll also see what they have to say about the Yahoo search partnership and its efforts to catch up with Google (and trip them up with antitrust headaches).</p>

<p>Okay. I&#8217;m onsite and nearly caffeinated. Yes, there are donuts, but Mobilized is going for the savory option.</p>

<p><strong>10:03 am</strong>: Still waiting for things to get started here.</p>
<p><strong>10:04 am</strong>: Microsoft search engineering head Satya Nadella comes out. &#8220;Okay, let&#8217;s get this thing underway.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:06 am</strong>: First up, some momentum stuff. Share is at 11.8 percent per comScore numbers released yesterday, up another 0.2 percent from October. Overall up 48 percent since launch. &#8220;We&#8217;re very, very happy with that growth.&#8221; Now over 90 million users, but the big deal, he says, is more heavy searchers. &#8220;We never had the fans of Bing and the heavy users,&#8221; Nadella says.</p>
<p><strong>10:08 am</strong>: Nadella says Bing is still getting a larger percentage of 18- to 24-year-olds than its share of searchers as a whole.</p>
<p><strong>10:09 am</strong>: &#8220;These are footholds that we have in the marketplace,&#8221; Nadella says.</p>

<p><strong>10:11 am</strong>: Continued focus on specialized verticals (like travel, music, health, image search etc). Overall, such searches account for five percent of all queries, but specialized search makes up of 10 percent of Bing&#8217;s searches.</p>
<p><strong>10:12 am</strong>: Partnerships: Yahoo is obviously the big one, but Nadella shows slide with Facebook, Twitter, Verizon., BlackBerry, Apple, Android, Foursquare and other logos.</p>
<p>There ave been 5.5 million downloads of the iPhone app.</p>
<p>Nadella says the toolbar deals are also important: They just give us a shot at acquiring the users. They have another one coming with Conduit. Also, they are now at least an option on iPhone and Firefox.</p>

<p><strong>10:16 am</strong>: Nadella says the engineering team is focused on three areas, beyond the &#8220;arms race&#8221; of overall search quality&#8211;increasing the visual organization, task-centered nature and social elements of search. </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re neck and neck in terms of search quality and we are able to maintain it,&#8221; Nadella says.</p>
<p><strong>10:18 am</strong>: Lots of talk about the ins and outs of search tech. Nadella says Microsoft has moved from a &#8220;neural net&#8221; approach to &#8220;boosted decision trees.&#8221; (No idea what that means.)</p>
<p><strong>10:22 am</strong>: Effort to make search more social is important, but just beginning. &#8220;This is a journey we are at the very beginnings of,&#8221; Nadella says, but says social will change search in terms of how results are discovered, formulated and answered.</p>
<p><strong>10:24 am</strong>: Nadella is talking about the importance of visual highlighting to call out various results as well as boosting interactivity, such as including forms within results so users can take action.</p>
<p>Still waiting for any new stuff, but we&#8217;re told it&#8217;s coming.</p>
<p>Nadella says the company has broken down a list of the tasks people are trying to do when they are trying to do more than just navigate to a particular site.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a pretty granular understanding just looking at the query stream of what people are trying to get done.&#8221;</p>
<p>Microsoft has broken it down to some 150 categories, but here are some of the top ones: 4.6 percent of searches are music related, 1.8 percent clothing and shoes, 1.6 percent consumer electronics, 1.1 recipes, 1.3 percent home furnishings.</p>
<p><strong>10:29 am</strong>: On to some new stuff.</p>
<p>New image search launching today, but first Microsoft is talking about visual search for things like finding movies and giving direct answers for some new types of queries.</p>

<p><strong>10:31 am</strong>: Microsoft is talking about any sort of non-search result as &#8220;answers.&#8221;</p>
<p>In one case, an &#8220;answer&#8221; for the query &#8220;let&#8217;s make a deal&#8221; would be video episodes of the game show.</p>
<p>But Microsoft says that automatically putting it at the top is not necessarily best. What the company says it should do instead is put it below the first two results, such as the show&#8217;s homepage, which get more clicks than the video.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am</strong>: Also when a user searches flights from Denver to Las Vegas in June, Microsoft pre-populates the fields in a flight search with a guess at the dates, in this case the first weekend in June.</p>
<p><strong>10:38 am</strong>: New image search represents first major changes in a year. Biggest shift is white space is gone with just a ton of tiles of images, with some categories at the top.</p>
<p>For example, search &#8220;Casablanca&#8221; and you get an option for the city in Morocco, another for the movie, a third for the style of wedding dress and another for the Casablanca Lily flower.</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am</strong>: On to shopping. Quadrupled the number of products in its database.</p>

<p><strong>10:43 am</strong>: Bing is adding a new focus on places as &#8220;destinations&#8221; with all the potential content from booking a flight or hotel to maps and attractions. </p>
<p>Which is nice, because I&#8217;m ready to go on a vacation right about now.</p>
<p>They use weather data to show times to go to and times to avoid a particular place.</p>
<p><strong>10:45 am</strong>: Microsoft is beefing up event listings with partnership from FanSnap and other partners. You get ticket info, diagram of stadium, etc.</p>

<p><strong>10:50 am</strong>: Back to social. Nadella says search can change by using one&#8217;s social graph to influence search results.</p>
<p>First example, you will start to see when your Facebook friends &#8220;Like&#8221; a page that is in search results.</p>
<p>For now, such results will only come up fairly infrequently, but Nadella says it will be a big deal when you do see pages that your friends have liked.</p>

<p>Search allows the data your friends share on Facebook to come to you when you actually want the information.</p>
<p>&#8220;In a way you are taking your friends with you,&#8221; says Microsoft&#8217;s Paul Yiu.</p>
<p>An example is when you are shopping for a product or going to visit a place&#8211;that&#8217;s a time when you really want to know what your friends think.</p>
<p>(Seems pretty cool, but wondering just how infrequently this will show up.)</p>
<p><strong>10:57 am</strong>: Another example Yiu gives is a search one might do at 3 am for what will make your baby stop crying. There are lots of results, but one that your friend likes might be worth trying first.</p>
<p><strong>11:00 am</strong>: Bing is also using one&#8217;s Facebook social circle to rank results in people search&#8211;i.e., if you have a friend in common, it will rank that &#8220;John Doe&#8221; higher than one you don&#8217;t know.</p>
<p><strong>11:01 am</strong>: Nadella is back to talk about local and maps and how that integrates with mobile. Behind him Blaise Aguera y Arcas is pulling out several phones to do a demo. (And they look like iPhones.)</p>
<p><strong>11:03 am</strong>: Aguera y Arcas takes the stage to show some changes coming to maps, first on the desktop. He notes the recent shift away from putting its most powerful map features on a Silverlight-powered site. Now it is moving that all to an HTML5-based site that needs no plug-ins.</p>
<p><strong>11:07 am</strong>: Bing is bringing the &#8220;tasks&#8221; concept to searches within maps. A search for a restaurant now brings up not just a map, but more info on the eatery and also the ability to make reservations via OpenTable.</p>
<p><strong>11:09 am</strong>: Aguera y Arcas switches to the iPhone. Shows how people can add their own panoramas to maps using a cellphone.</p>
<p><strong>11:13 am</strong>: iPhone demo over 3G is going really slow. Aguera y Arcas asks how many of the reporters in the room are using 3G.</p>
<p><strong>11:15 am</strong>: Although its going painfully slow, looks like Bing app starts to recognize a restaurant search and pops up options like types of cuisine and price. The goal is to save keystrokes.</p>
<p>Other options are things like get a map, make a reservation, menus, etc.</p>
<p>Still R-E-A-L-L-Y S-L-O-W.</p>
<p>&#8220;This bandwidth situation is really going to suck for what I have to demo next.&#8221;</p>
<p>He switches to a first-person StreetSide view, but all we see are dots.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is so sad,&#8221; Aguera y Arcas says, lamenting that we aren&#8217;t able to see all the cool stuff. There does seem to be some new StreetSide view stuff on the iPhone app that could be neat, assuming it runs faster on the street than inside this demo room.</p>

<p><strong>11:23 am</strong>: We&#8217;ve reached a new low. &#8220;Close your eyes and imagine&#8230;.&#8221; Aguera y Arcas says, and then describes what the app would do if we could see it.</p>
<p><strong>11:23 am</strong>: And they have switched to Wi-Fi. &#8220;This is so exciting,&#8221; Aguera y Arcas says. Now he&#8217;s going back to StreetSide. &#8220;That&#8217;s so much nicer.&#8221;</p>
<p>As for directions, Bing now has bus directions with schedule info in addition to driving and walking directions. &#8220;It&#8217;s about time,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I&#8217;ve been waiting for this one myself.&#8221;</p>
<p>Another feature reminds you to do something when you reach a certain place, like call someone or check-in to FourSquare or Facebook.</p>
<p><strong>11:29 am</strong>: Aguera says we are in Search 2.0&#8211;where you do more than just search and get results. </p>
<p>Image search is an example. Shows the coming ability to search for something by using a camera to start a search. Basically you can shoot a picture of a page and use any of the terms there to start searching (It uses character recognition in the background).</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Questions and Answers</h4>

<p><strong>11:32 am</strong>: How big a deal is Google Instant?</p>
<p>&#8220;We are absolutely studying Google Instant,&#8221; Nadella says. Says they could match it. It&#8217;s a question of whether it makes task completion easier. &#8220;Is it a value or a distraction?&#8221; Doing studies and so far Microsoft&#8217;s research says it is mixed at best.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not a game changer. It&#8217;s a nice feature at best.&#8221;</p>
<p>He hedges a bit on whether it is something Microsoft needs to match.</p>

<p>The marketing of the <a href="http://www.oprah.com/own">Oprah Winfrey Network</a>, set to debut January 1, 2011, is definitely ratcheting up.</p>
<p>OWN is being <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100813/discovery-ups-oprah-money-gets-more-oprah-in-return">backed by Discovery Communications</a>.</p>
<p>But what will be interesting to see is how much of a digital element there is on OWN, which is obviously heavy on the television shows for the new cable network.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100125/social-media-storytelling-at-sundance-myspace-youtube-and-oprah-dudes-and-also-my-twitter-hating-mom-discuss/">Robert Tercek</a>, who headed digital media for Winfrey-related online properties, left the company earlier this year. Under Tercek, there were several big live events for Oprah.com, as well as one of the biggest book downloads.</p>
<p>But, so far&#8211;besides the requisite Facebook and Twitter links&#8211;the digital parts on OWN seems to be limited to a lot of promotions for its content, asking the audience for its input about those various shows, casting calls and &#8220;Your OWN Channel.&#8221;</p>

<p>That would be &#8220;a destination to tell your stories and express your passion through video.&#8221; Apparently, according to one of the OWN videos, about 10,000 videos have been uploaded using its tools.</p>
<p>One video was titled, <a href="http://myown.oprah.com/community/library/video_detail.html?entity_id=208933785&#038;media_id=10">&#8220;Auntie Bernie&#8217;s Cinnamon Stick Fried Chicken,&#8221;</a> while another posited, <a href="http://myown.oprah.com/community/library/video_detail.html?entity_id=202364913&#038;media_id=16">&#8220;There Is An Answer To Every Question, You Just Have To Find It.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Indeed, although BoomTown thinks all answers are in cinnamon stick fried chicken.</p>
<p>Here is a sizzle reel for OWN, as well as another promotion for the cable channel.</p>
<p>Multicolored balloons and a whole lot of hope seem to be the big themes.</p>
<p>As well as a whole lot of Oprah, <em>natch</em>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As Qualcomm aims to bring an end to a painful chapter in its history, the company is <a href="http://www.flotv.com/rebate">now offering refunds</a> to those who bought its FloTV mobile TV units.<br />

The chip maker had already said it would suspend the service in March, so this latest news is an attempt to make good with those who shelled out for the hardware. CEO Paul Jacobs reiterated last week that the company <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101130/palm-qualcomm-chiefs-weigh-wireless-future/">continues to evaluate its options with Flo</a>&#8211;from finding a buyer to potentially selling off the spectrum it has for the service.</p>
<p>Qualcomm once <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091116/qualcomms-ceo-paul-jacobs-talks-about-smartbooks-and-more/">had high hopes for the service</a>. However, Jacobs acknowledged at a Churchill Club event last week that, outside of certain live events such as sports, it probably makes sense to offer mobile TV via on-demand streaming, rather than as a broadcast.</p>
<p>To be fully eligible for the rebate, customers must have purchased and activated the service, though there is also a form for those who didn&#8217;t even make it that far.</p>
<p>Qualcomm doesn&#8217;t want your unit back (apparently, it doesn&#8217;t want a bunch of FloTVs, either). Instead, the company&#8217;s Web site lists some recycling options. Or you could always keep it as a collector&#8217;s item&#8211;an early adopter badge of glory.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that your service gets deactivated once the refund is processed, so on the off-chance you are still watching your Flo, you might want to wait until March to send in your form.</p>

<p>Even as Groupon is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101129/googles-groupon-offer-5-3-billion-with-700-million-earnout/">poised to sell itself to Google</a> for badillions of dollars, the attack of the social buying clones continues.</p>
<p>Today, it is the launch of <a href="http://www.familyfinds.com/los-angeles">FamilyFinds</a>, a Santa Monica, Calif., start-up aimed at offering daily deals to families, with $5.75 million in funding to help it get going.</p>
<p>&#8220;Think relevance, plus an explosive market plus a great team,&#8221; said FamilyFinds CEO Matt Coffin, in an interview yesterday about the new site, whose first &#8220;holi-deal&#8221; today is &#8220;$10 Only-in-LA Santa Photos.&#8221;</p>
<p>Others to come include kid-focused live shows, skate rentals and holiday cruises that Coffin said are &#8220;hyper-local and demographically targeted.&#8221;</p>
<p>Coffin said, as a longtime entrepreneur, he was intrigued with the booming social e-commerce space. But, as a parent, he was less impressed, because of little in the way of personalization.</p>
<p>&#8220;I was somewhat disenchanted by the same offers that did not target me accurately,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>(So is BoomTown, who is going to scream if I get another spa treatment or stripper pole lesson offer this week. Not that there&#8217;s anything wrong with that.)</p>
<p>Thus, Coffin said FamilyFinds drills down on one audience&#8211;those who need to entertain and serve the little ones.</p>
<p>The former founder of LowerMyBills co-founded FamilyFinds with, among others, a blast from the Web 1.0 past: Former Disney Internet Group head Jake Winebaum.</p>
<p>At launch, FamilyFinds said it will focus on numerous communities across Los Angeles, although a national rollout is coming in 2011.</p>
<p>Split Rock Partners provided the Series A funding.</p>

I received a user email today introducing PayPal Shoptimist that linked to a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/shoptimist">Facebook page of the same name</a>. The page says it will include both group buying deals and sweepstakes offers, though it&#8217;s not fully live yet, so the only things users can do so far are &#8220;like&#8221; the page and complain about how it&#8217;s not live yet.</p>
<p>PayPal spokesperson Charlotte Hill said via email:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Shoptimist is PayPal&#8217;s first foray into serving our customers in a social media environment. The site combines the fun of shopping with your friends, with the big savings and convenience of shopping online. Shoptimists Unite, a component of the Shoptimist page, will allow customers to invite their friends to purchase group deals which reduce in price with more buyers, or enter sweepstakes to win popular items. The site also has a blog where customers can get the scoop on the latest news and trends in online shopping.</p></blockquote>
<p>The Shoptimist rollout appears to be somewhat haphazard; I found a <a href="https://www.paypal-shoptimist.com/blog/">blog post announcing Shoptimist</a> from last month. PayPal told users today it is working through technical issues and will be making deals live soon. Hill added, &#8220;The site is currently in beta and we&#8217;re working on rolling out these new features to our customers in the coming months.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The broadcast networks only put their stuff on the Web under very specific conditions. So this is exactly what they don&#8217;t want: Free, live streams of their stuff delivered to your iPad, via the browser.</p>
<p>You can get it right now, by heading to FilmOn.com, where you can get streams of several local L.A. TV stations, which means you can get whatever NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox are broadcasting. You can also get a few cable channels, like Time Warner&#8217;s CNN International, as well as a couple of porn feeds.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s incredibly easy, and it&#8217;s a very high-quality feed, with very little lag. This screenshot of NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Today Show&#8221; isn&#8217;t very exciting, but it is current&#8211;I took it a few minutes ago.</p>
<p><a rel="lightbox" href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/filmon-ipad-nbc.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-25577" title="filmon ipad nbc" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/filmon-ipad-nbc.png" alt="" width="380" height="285" /></a></p>
<p>You can also get FilmOn via a conventional PC, but that requires a download, so it&#8217;s not quite as convenient. But it&#8217;s still very easy, and while FilmOn has said it would charge for the service, it&#8217;s free for now.</p>
<p>How is this possible? It shouldn&#8217;t be, according to the networks, who are suing <a href="http://www.filmon.com/tv/?mid=13">FilmOn</a> and founder Alki David. They&#8217;re also suing <a href="http://www.ivi.tv/">ivi.TV</a>, which is doing something similar with feeds from Seattle TV stations.</p>
<p>Both FilmOn and ivi are arguing that they&#8217;re within their rights based on an interpretation of FCC rules that allow &#8220;<a href="http://www.tvtechnology.com/article/107600">secondary transmissions</a>&#8221; of broadcast signals.</p>
<p>The networks, of course, will work very, very hard to shoot down that argument, for obvious reasons. Ivi and FilmOn have been out for several weeks, but a note from industry analyst Rich Greenfield (<a href="http://www.btigresearch.com/2010/11/05/free-live-feeds-of-abc-cbs-fox-nbc-and-cnn-on-your-ipadpc-this-will-make-retrans-more-challenging/">registration required</a>) this morning is going to increase the attention the two companies have been getting.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how Apple plays this. Steve Jobs has big plans for the TV business, but they generally involve working <em>with</em> the networks and studios so that they can charge money for their shows on his devices.</p>
<p>On the other hand, since FilmOn is getting to the iPad over the free Web, instead of an Apple-approved app, I&#8217;m not sure how Jobs could stop the transmission. Even if he wants to.</p>
<p>UPDATE: Ivi&#8217;s Hal Bringman wants us to know that in addition to Seattle, his service also offers streams from New York broadcast stations, and will start offering from L.A. this weekend. Up next&#8211;Chicago and Philadelphia. Bringman says his company also has an iPad app in the works, but that one will require a $4.95 monthly fee.</p>

When Apple was pushing the HTML5 standard it wanted to use for video on the iPhone and iPad, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100513/lets-try-this-again-how-much-web-video-is-really-ipad-ready/">instead of Adobe&#8217;s Flash</a>?</p>
<p>No one seems to spend much time talking about it anymore. For good reason: In large part because Steve Jobs insisted on it, &#8220;online video&#8221; increasingly means &#8220;HTML5-compatible.&#8221; There&#8217;s not much to debate anymore.</p>
<p>Video search engine <a href="http://blog.mefeedia.com/html5-oct-2010">MeFeedia</a>, for instance, says that 54 percent of Web video is now compatible with HTML5. That&#8217;s more than <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100513/lets-try-this-again-how-much-web-video-is-really-ipad-ready/">double the tally the company had back in May</a>&#8211;less than six months ago. And because MeFeedia&#8217;s numbers include old archival stuff that most people don&#8217;t watch, as well as big troves of Chinese video you&#8217;re unlikely to see, the practical number for most Web surfers is much higher.</p>
<p>Then again, it isn&#8217;t hard to find Web video that isn&#8217;t compatible with your iPad or iPhone&#8211;or your Android handset from Google, either. And once you do, the fact that the clip is in the statistical minority won&#8217;t make you feel any better. Even some sites that Apple says are &#8220;iPad-ready,&#8221; like the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/pages/arts/index.html">New York Times</a>, have plenty of video that won&#8217;t work on Apple&#8217;s device or any other HMTL5 player.</p>
<p>MeFeedia highlights these HTML5 holdouts:</p>
<ul>
<li>Full episodes from the major TV Networks (including Hulu)</li>
<li>Most cable network content, particularly long-form video</li>
<li>Metacafe, MySpace Video, 5min</li>
<li>Live video sites such as Ustream and Justin.tv</li>
