<p>As many readers know, we have been adding to our staff here at <strong>AllThingsD</strong>, most recently in our new reviews section, with the addition of Lauren Goode earlier this year.</p>
<p>Now Walt Mossberg and I are proud to announce that Mike Isaac is joining our team to cover the social Web and its biggest players, including Facebook, Twitter and Google+.</p>
<p>He comes to <strong>ATD</strong> most recently from a staff writer position at Wired, where, among many other things, he spent much of his time writing about Google&#8217;s mobile and social efforts.</p>
<p>From 2010 to 2012, his coverage at Wired included the decline and fall of Hewlett-Packard&#8217;s mobile empire, Google&#8217;s surprise acquisition of Motorola Mobility, and Facebook&#8217;s steady trudge toward IPO-hood. </p>
<p>Prior to that, he wrote about the business of tech for Forbes magazine and Forbes.com, with a particular emphasis on start-ups and social. His work has also appeared in Paste magazine, Performer magazine, DNR magazine and the Washington Examiner.</p>
<p>Isaac holds a degree in English literature from the University of California at Berkeley, and is a former Georgetown University journalism fellow.</p>
<p>He takes over the social beat from Liz Gannes, who will be stepping up our coverage of the many businesses of Google, innovation, venture investing and the start-up scene &#8212; especially its bigger companies, from Pinterest to Quora to Dropbox. Gannes, as everyone who follows her knows well, has become a key observer of Silicon Valley and its players, and her insights into the tech scene have become one of our most invaluable offerings.</p>

<p>Facebook has just announced that it will acquire Instagram, the popular mobile photo-sharing service, for $1 billion in cash and shares.</p>
<p>The social networking giant posted on the acquisition, its biggest yet, on its site, as well as on CEO and co-founder <a href="https://www.facebook.com/zuck">Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s Timeline</a> on Facebook.</p>
<p>Photos are critically important for Facebook, which has been <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120409/facetagram-instabook-whatever-you-call-it-all-your-photo-are-belong-to-facebook-for-1-billion/">slow to innovate in the fast-growing mobile arena</a> in the important consumer space. By contrast, Instagram has taken the arena by storm, with its delightful and elegant app and the motto, &#8220;Fast beautiful photo sharing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Consumers have responded (including me &#8212; it is the only non-communications app I use many times a day). The San Francisco-based company &#8212; with only 13 employees &#8212; had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120403/instagram-by-the-numbers-1-billion-photos-uploaded/">30 million Apple iPhone users</a> before it came to Google&#8217;s Android last week, where it got <a href="http://instagram-engineering.tumblr.com/post/20541814340/keeping-instagram-up-with-over-a-million-new-users-in">more than a million new users in just 12 hours</a>.</p>
<p>Still, despite all the usage, Instagram had not articulated a plan for, you know, making money. Now, that will presumably be Facebook&#8217;s problem to solve.</p>
<p>The Facebook acquisition has been kept very quiet, with its CEO Kevin Systrom working on it in conjunction with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120406/sequoia-set-to-lead-500m-valuation-round-for-instagram/">new fundraising efforts</a> that would have valued the company at $500 million. Liz Gannes reported on this effort last week, which was poised to close, in fact, before the Facebook deal was struck over the weekend.</p>
<p>Until now, Instagram has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110202/instagram-raises-7m-led-by-benchmark/">received</a> Series A funding of $7 million led by Benchmark Capital just over a year ago, when it only had 1.75 million registered users.</p>
<p>Seed investors include Andreessen Horowitz &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101110/no-its-not-instagram-photo-sharing-app-picplz-raises-5-million/">which did not follow on later</a> &#8212; and Baseline Ventures. Also in the Benchmark round: Twitter creator Jack Dorsey, former Facebooker Adam D&#8217;Angelo and Chris Sacca.</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://blog.instagram.com/">blog post</a> titled &#8220;Instagram + Facebook,&#8221; Systrom promised no change, except for the $1 billion mountain of cash:</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important to be clear that Instagram is not going away. We&#8217;ll be working with Facebook to evolve Instagram and build the network &#8230; The Instagram app will still be the same one you know and love.&#8221;</p>
<p>Zuckerberg also promised that Facebook would keep Instagram independent, and that such a large purchase would be rare for the company, which is set to go public soon.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is an important milestone for Facebook because it&#8217;s the first time we&#8217;ve ever acquired a product and company with so many users,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;We don&#8217;t plan on doing many more of these, if any at all.&#8221;</p>

<p>The total consideration for San Francisco-based Instagram is approximately $1 billion in a combination of cash and shares of Facebook. The transaction, which is subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close later this quarter.</p>
<p>Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, posted about the transaction on his Timeline: </p>
<p>I&#8217;m excited to share the news that we&#8217;ve agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook.</p>
<p>For years, we&#8217;ve focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we&#8217;ll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.</p>
<p>We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram&#8217;s strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.</p>
<p>We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.</p>
<p>These and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. <p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-166223" title="babysittersclub" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/babysittersclub-211x285.png" alt="" width="211" height="285" />The San Francisco-based company is somewhat similar to the teen-oriented book series by Ann M. Martin, in which a group of middle-school students help parents find babysitters.</p>
<p>But in this version, instead of an elaborate phone tree, it uses modern communication tools like Facebook. The UrbanSitter site helps parents find sitters based on their availability, and even on their experience working for Facebook friends and friends of friends.</p>
<p>UrbanSitter has secured $1.75 million in seed funding from First Round Capital. Rustic Canyon Partners, Menlo Ventures and several angels also participated.</p>
<p>In September, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110916/urbansitter-puts-finding-a-babysitter-into-social-context/"><strong>AllThingsD</strong>&rsquo;s Liz Gannes reported</a> that the company had launched in one market, and had assisted with 300 babysitting bookings.</p>
<p>Since then, it has expanded to San Diego, Napa and Sonoma Valleys, Seattle, Boulder and Lake Tahoe. Next month, it will roll out in New York, Chicago, Denver and St. Louis.</p>
<p>The funding will be used for product development, such as mobile bookings, and new features, including online payments to sitters. The capital will also go toward expansion into new cities.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, Google and Mozilla said they had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111220/google-resigns-firefox-search-royalty-deal/">struck a deal to renew their search royalty agreement</a> for another three years.</p>
<p>What the pair declined to add: The search giant will pay just under $300 million per year to be the default choice in Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox browser, a huge jump from its previous arrangement, due to competing interest from both Yahoo and Microsoft.</p>
<p>Sources said this total amount &#8212; just under $1 billion &#8212; was the minimum revenue guarantee for delivering search queries garnered from consumers using Firefox.</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s main rival in the bid, sources said, was Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search service, which was aggressively trying to hip-check it from the main search spot on the browser.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because the software giant has been spending a lot of money in efforts to grow Bing&#8217;s market share in the search market.</p>
<p>Microsoft, of course, also owns the still-dominant Internet Explorer browser, but Google&#8217;s Chrome has recently been making major gains over both IE and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox.</p>
<p>Still, Mozilla&#8217;s recent negotiations with both companies was about search market share.</p>
<p>Yahoo was also in the mix, even though Microsoft powers its search technology, because a hookup with Firefox was considered a plus in holding on to its declining search market share. </p>
<p>But the deal, which was being pushed hard by Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving and its search head Shashi Seth, was determined to be too costly for Yahoo.</p>
<p>Costly indeed, since the new price is much higher than Google had previously ponied up to Mozilla. In 2010, Google contributed 84 percent of Mozilla&#8217;s $123 million in revenue.</p>
<p>A previous version of the partnership had expired at the end of November, and the new talks were done against a backdrop of simmering tension between Google and Mozilla over Chrome.</p>
<p>As Liz Gannes wrote earlier this week:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Since the first search royalty deal was signed in 2008, Google&#8217;s own Chrome browser has become a significant competitor. Just last month, Chrome overtook Firefox in global usage for the first time, according to StatCounter. Both browsers &#8212; software which is used to navigate the Internet &#8212; have about 25 percent market share.</p></blockquote>
<p>Even with the new default deal with Google, Mozilla still also has partnerships with other search providers, including Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, Amazon and eBay.</p>
<p>Of course, everybody declined to comment on my queries to hand over all the financial deets <em>stat</em>.</p>
<p>But Google&#8217;s SVP of Search, Alan Eustace, said in a statement: &#8220;Mozilla has been a valuable partner to Google over the years and we look forward to continuing this great partnership in the years to come.&#8221;</p>
<p>Great, perhaps, but also much more expensive &#8212; so presumably Firefox is worth it.</p>

<p>Well-known tech entrepreneur Peter Pham will be joining the Los Angeles-based start-ups lab that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111116/former-myspace-ceo-mike-jones-brings-the-science-of-start-ups-to-los-angeles/">was just launched</a> by former Myspace CEO Mike Jones.</p>
<p>Pham, who was recently <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110614/confirmed-co-founder-peter-pham-leaves-color/">helming the high-profile and controversial Color photo-sharing start-up</a> in Silicon Valley, will be moving south again to join Jones at the Santa Monica, Calif.-based &#8220;technology studio,&#8221; called <a href="http://science-inc.com/">Science</a>.</p>
<p>As Liz Gannes reported last week, the goal &#8212; with $10 million in funding and private equity partners at the ready for more &#8212; is to &#8220;incubate ideas in-house, invest in other people&#8217;s start-ups, advise Silicon Valley companies on breaking into Hollywood, and maybe even look into reworking later-stage Internet companies like Yahoo.&#8221;</p>
<p>Pham and Jones will aim at three verticals: The intersection of content and commerce, social systems, and mobile and location.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s an area that Pham knows well, with stints at both BillShrink and Photobucket (also a former News Corp. property, as was MySpace), as well as active angel investing. </p>
<p>In an interview yesterday, Pham said he hopes to bridge the Silicon Valley-L.A. delta more, since there is an increasing amount of promising tech taking place there, too. </p>
<p>&#8220;There is a lot going on in L.A., and a lot of tech talent that still sometimes get less attention up in Silicon Valley,&#8221; said Pham. &#8220;I hope to be part of bringing the communities a little closer together.&#8221;</p>
<p>In addition, he said that the focus of Science would not necessarily be on online entertainment start-ups, as might be expected, given the proximity to Hollywood.</p>
<p>&#8220;We really want to shine a light on the innovation taking place in Los Angeles beyond the obvious,&#8221; said Pham.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a good idea, given how navel-gazing Northern California geeks can be.</p>
<p>Also in the L.A. start-up scene of late is a new accelerator called <a href="http://www.startengine.com/">Start Engine</a>, which debuted recently with a focus on mentorship on 120 start-ups per year.</p>

<p>At <strong>AllThingsD</strong>, we love Liz Gannes too, but not quite as endearing-creepily as Steve Clausnitzer of <a href="http://hubski.com/">Hubski</a>, a &#8220;thoughtful&#8221; social aggregation site, does.</p>
<p>Like a lot of start-ups, he wants our fantastic social reporter to check out his site and possibly write about it. But, unlike others, to entice Liz Clausnitzer has penned a little ditty that he posted on YouTube. </p>
<p>You need to watch it to experience the full oddball effort (although we all agree on her very lovely smile)&#8211; but <em>mission accomplished</em> on us noticing you, Steve!</p>
<p>I can make no promises that Liz will cover Hubski, of course.</p>
<p>But she is not alone in the video PR pleas &#8212; embedded below is one from June to our commerce reporter Tricia Duryee about a new online game from Sir Mix-A-Lot (who seems to do this sort of thing a lot):</p>

<p>One of the quotes I always keep pinned to the side of my computer monitor is by my favorite writer, Joan Didion, from her terrific essay, &#8220;On Keeping a Notebook&#8221;:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company or not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering on the mind&#8217;s door at 4 a.m. of a bad night and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends. We forget all too soon the things we thought we could never forget. We forget the loves and the betrayals alike, forget what we whispered and what we screamed, forget who we were.</p></blockquote>
<p>Yesterday, Facebook took Didion&#8217;s elegant and poignant concept about memories a little too literally (and, of course, nerdily) with its introduction of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110923/analysis-facebook-applies-the-dimension-of-time-to-the-social-web/">Timeline</a>, which the social networking giant is calling &#8220;The Story of Your Life.&#8221;</p>
<p>Oh dear. (And it hopefully will not include the part about that fantastically dysfunctional break-up in a ratty hotel room by the sea.)</p>
<p><em>Moving on!</em> </p>
<p>You could look at this new offering from Facebook in a lot of ways, from a new super-sized version of its existing profiles to a digital scrapbook of memories to a geek version of a daily planner.</p>
<p>As Liz Gannes wrote today in a cogent analysis of Timeline:</p>
<p>&#8220;On one end, Facebook&#8217;s platform update will channel every little thing people do around the Web in real time. Meanwhile, the new timelines in user profiles are an acknowledgment and glorification of the past.&#8221;</p>
<p>All true, of course, but to my mind the whole idea of a life on display in pixels like some never-ending comic book &#8212; with photos and text and video and smiley faces (and frowns, too!) &#8212; is, well, more than a little creepy.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not Facebook&#8217;s fault at all, because it is just doing better what it already does, born from its founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s central notion that being able to share everything online is the sacred goal. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s always been his mantra and the young and decidedly visionary entrepreneur visibly bounced around the stage of Facebook&#8217;s f8 developers conference yesterday at the idea of it. </p>
<p>His Timeline had a lot about his longtime girlfriend and his dog, Beast. Has there ever been a more over-sharing canine? I think <em>not</em>!</p>
<p>(Actually, as longtime privacy activist Lori Fena tweeted to me today: &#8220;Internet Anthropology: 90&rsquo;s Internet &#8212; Nobody knows you&#8217;re a dog. 2011 FB Timeline &#8212; Everyone knows you&#8217;re a dog.&#8221;)</p>
<p>But what struck me the most was a video Zuckerberg showed about Timeline, which depicted the life of a (fictional?) Facebook employee named Andy Sparks, from his birth on August 14, 1974 onward. </p>
<p>Maybe it was just me, but as it proceeded through Andy&#8217;s awkward teens to his wedding to his own kids and the years flipped by, I got a sinking feeling that it would not stop until we ended up with a crepe-lined profile page and a digital tombstone.</p>

<p>Thankfully, the video stopped at middle-age (Andy would be 37 years old now), but like I said: Creepy!</p>
<p>Then again, it also might be a bad idea to digitize everything in sight in the first place, well beyond such concerns, as <a href="http://maura.tumblr.com/post/10548489653/on-facebook-privacy-and-the-hindered-development-of">Maura Johnston concluded</a> in a smart essay about Timeline: </p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>I think there&#8217;s something to be said about the idea of personality development over time that makes me quite uneasy about Facebook&#8217;s exuberance over being able to chronicle one&#8217;s whole life on the service. What does that do to the notion of memory, the fuzziness of which can have helpful functions at times? &#8230; And I feel like so many of the innovations involving technology and persona being put forth right now are being fashioned by people with myopic &#8220;everything is great right now and will be that way forever&#8221; outlooks, and that they don&#8217;t really have any sense of what life beyond their VC-funded Silicon Valley privileged existences might be like.</p></blockquote>
<p>In other words, who we were may not be, in the end, who we really are.</p>
<p>Or perhaps instead, it is what Didion so eloquently wrote:</p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Remember what it was to be me:</em> that is always the point.&#8221;</p>

<p>The arena for news readers on tablets and smartphones is competitive, with high-profile efforts such as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">Flipboard</a>, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110210/yahoos-got-a-digital-newstand/">Livestand</a> from Yahoo, AOL&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">Editions</a> and start-ups such as Pulse and Zite.</p>
<p>The reason for CNN&#8217;s acquisition interest &#8212; as well as look-sees from several other publishers &#8212; is not a surprise: As readers turn more toward using these mobile devices to consume content, big media companies are trying to acquire the technology to serve up their fare to them.</p>
<p>It is a dicey arena, though, where content aggregation meets (and crashes into) content lifting. Vancouver-based Zite, for example, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110330/when-media-giants-attack-cease-and-desist-letter-to-news-reader-zite/">was sent a cease-and-desist letter in March</a>, by a panoply of media companies (not CNN!) alleging various copyright violations.</p>
<p>That happened <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110308/zite-launches-even-more-personalized-ipad-magazine-app/">right after it was launched</a>, with $4 million in funding from angel investors and Canadian grants and an innovative personalized article-picking algorithm. </p>
<p>As Liz Gannes wrote then:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>[Then] Zite CEO Ali Davar describes the iPad as a way to &#8220;emancipate the technology&#8221; his team originated at research at the University of British Columbia.</p>
<p>It had previously been put to work in a browser plug-in called Worio. And, as you might have guessed, browser plug-ins are a tough business.</p>
<p>The free Zite app imports a user&#8217;s Twitter tweets, follows and Google Reader subscriptions, offers lists of pre-made categories, and then solicits feedback and refines over time a list of topics and sources the user is interested in. It features articles based on their popularity, number of shares from a user&#8217;s network and topic relevance. <p>Last week, a Canadian site called <a href="http://www.techvibes.com/blog/vancouvers-zite-to-be-acquired-by-cnn-for-20-25-million-2011-08-22">Techvibes</a> first wrote about the possibility of the sale of Zite to CNN, which is based in Atlanta and owned by Time Warner.</p>
<p>In a press release, CNN said Zite would remain a standalone unit, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNN, and that CEO Mark Johnson will continue to run Zite&#8217;s operations, but now in San Francisco. CNN also said that Davar will remain an executive director and Mike Klass will continue as CTO.</p>
<p>In a statement, Johnson said: &#8220;Zite is thrilled about combining forces with CNN to create a world-class news discovery platform. In CNN, we have found a partner who shares our vision and passion. Being part of the CNN family gives us the capital to grow Zite&#8217;s business and continue to innovate in the space.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On Friday&#8217;s <a href="http://online.wsj.com/video-center">Digits</a>, <strong>AllThingsD&#8217;s</strong> Liz Gannes and I discussed two difficult subjects both having to do with Facebook: Why the Winklevoss twins won&#8217;t give up on suing the company and why it&#8217;s so difficult to account for virtual goods inside social games.</p>
<p>Liz kicked off the show by talking about how the twins dropped their fraud suit against Facebook in favor of a new one <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110624/the-winklevii-didnt-actually-give-up-they-just-switched-to-another-lawsuit/">that accused the company</a> over whether it  &#8221;intentionally or inadvertently suppressed evidence.&#8221;</p>
<p>Specifically at issue are a number of instant messages written by a young Mark Zuckerberg, which were too explicit for Liz to mention on air.</p>
<p>Later, I chatted about how <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110624/what-zynga-will-look-like-as-a-public-company/">the laws are not yet clear on how companies should record revenue from virtual goods</a>, leaving them to come up with their own best practices. Meanwhile, Zynga will likely become the first example as it is expected to go public any week now.</p>

<p>On some level of journalism, I guess anything <em>could</em> happen.</p>
<p>At least that&#8217;s according to a recent article by Business Insider&#8217;s Henry Blodget about an alleged &#8220;mole&#8221; at Twitter who was allegedly spying for Google, specifically about an exec the microblogging service was trying to poach from the Silicon Valley search giant.</p>
<p>In a decidedly splashy, hello-traffic, ALL-CAPs headline&#8211;<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-mole-john-doerr-2011-4?op=1">THE SEARCH FOR THE &#8220;TWITTER MOLE&#8221;: All Eyes On John Doerr</a>&#8220;&#8211;Blodget pointed his <em>J&#8217;accuse</em> finger at the legendary venture capitalist as the culprit.</p>
<p><em>Based on&#8230;</em></p>
<p>Well, based on nothing, it appears, except rank speculation and what appears to be no attempt to get Doerr to comment.</p>
<p>And, while it&#8217;s not my cup of tea, <em>whatev</em>, I suppose.</p>
<p>Except when I read down to the bottom and landed on this gem:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>We have talked to several sources familiar with aspects of the situation. Thus far, we have not been able to confirm either assertion.</p>
<p>First, no one has even confirmed that Google was tipped off in advance of Twitter&#8217;s poaching effort, much less by a Twitter mole.</p>
<p>This doesn&#8217;t mean it didn&#8217;t happen.</p></blockquote>
<p>And later still:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>So we haven&#8217;t been able to confirm the &#8220;high-level mole at Twitter&#8221; story. And we think there&#8217;s a good explanation for why there might not be a mole at all.</p>
<p>Secondly, we have talked to no one who has any evidence other than the logic above that, even if there is a Google mole at Twitter, the mole is John Doerr. One insider we spoke to, in fact, dismissed the idea out of hand.</p></blockquote>
<p><em>Say what?</em></p>
<p>It&#8217;s kind of like thinking that a sparkly Civil War-era vampire falling in love with a moody chick in the Pacific Northwest and flying through the pines all day and mooning over their cruel fate was real.</p>
<p>Okay, that was a Hollywood movie called &#8220;Twilight,&#8221; but <em>that doesn&#8217;t mean it didn&#8217;t happen!</em></p>
<p>Thus, Doerr&#8211;a tough customer to be sure, capable of all kinds of sharp-elbowed behavior&#8211;is guilty until proven innocent?</p>
<p>Or just not guilty at all, but let&#8217;s just say he might be anyway, without a shred of evidence, because it <em>could have happened</em>!</p>
<p>(Courtroom confession: It was <strong>All Things Digital</strong>&#8216;s Liz Gannes, who did it <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110114/google-holds-onto-product-vp-sundar-pichai-after-daring-twitter-talent-raid-attempt/">on the blog with scoop</a> on the Twitter talent raid effort of Sundar Pichai!)</p>
<p>Speaking of evidence, less than a week later, Javert&#8211;oops, I mean, Blodget&#8211;was back in another kangaroo court performance with another terrifically loud headline:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-lawsuit-paul-ceglia-new-evidence-2011-4#">&#8220;The Guy Who Says He Owns 50% Of Facebook Just Filed A Boatload Of New Evidence&#8211;And It&#8217;s Breathtaking.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Breathtaking, I guess, if you are in that fantasy teenaged girl mode, but deeply suspect if you are anyone with a modicum of journalistic responsibility.</p>
<p>It is perfectly fine for Blodget to dredge up the copious emails from a man named Paul Ceglia&#8211;who alleges he possesses a contract that he struck with Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg at the time of its creation&#8211;and analyze them.</p>
<p>And it is certainly notable that a credible law firm, DLA Piper, has taken on the case for Ceglia and it does seems unlikely that it would have done so without doing some level of due diligence.</p>
<p>In fact, in an interview with <a href="http://amlawdaily.typepad.com/amlawdaily/2011/04/dlafacebook.html">Am Law Daily</a>, DLA partner Robert Brownlie, international co-chair of the firm&#8217;s securities litigation, said: &#8220;At first I shrugged it off as incredible. I would not have gotten involved and DLA would not have gotten involved if we had any doubts about the facts or evidence in the case.&#8221;</p>
<p>That was, of course, countered by Facebook&#8217;s lawyer Orin Snyder at Gibson, Dunn &#038; Crutcher, who said in a statement that the Ceglia allegations were part of &#8220;a fraudulent lawsuit brought by a convicted felon.&#8221;</p>
<p>By the way, in fancy-lawyer parlance, that translates to a liar-liar-pants-on-fire defense.</p>
<p>So, microwave the popcorn and get ready for the drama, because no question, it is clearly going to be juicy all around with a whole lot of social networking poking!</p>
<p>In fact, such a case is tailor-made for Blodget, who has always been a very gifted writer with a nose for sharp-edged analysis.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s too bad, then, that he did not hone his knife to such an edge when it comes to Ceglia, giving him much too much credibility based on what could be fake emails, especially since they come from a man with a history of fraud.</p>
<p>History, in fact, that Ceglia is depending on in this case, since Zuckerberg most definitely has one in regards to partnerships gone bad.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/imgres-11.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/imgres-11.jpeg" alt="" title="imgres-1" width="147" height="64" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-42630" /></a></p>
<p>Thus, Zuckerberg has been sneaky before, ergo he&#8217;s sneaky here.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no surprise as a legal tactic, of course, and I threw in the &#8220;<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergo">ergo</a>,&#8221; since I too want to play Perry Mason in a blog.</p>
<p>But. More to the point, while Facebook was certainly hard-nosed in dealing with both protracted and high-profile legal challenges from the Winklevoss twins and also Eduardo Severin, I don&#8217;t think I have ever seen the company explicitly say evidence was completely fabricated, as it is alleging Ceglia&#8217;s emails are.</p>
<p>As I said, I have no idea if they are or they&#8217;re not, but I do know this: While those emails are certainly bombshell in nature, they are designed to be so precisely because it is a lawsuit in which the principal is trying to shame Facebook into settling.</p>
<p>None of that seems to concern Blodget, who concludes at the end of the post:</p>
<p>&#8220;In short, to us at least, the emails don&#8217;t read &#8216;fake.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>In short, to me at least, that&#8217;s for fake-email experts and the courts to decide.</p>
<p>The real fact of the matter is, who knows? I certainly don&#8217;t, although I do know it&#8217;s terrifically easy to file a lawsuit and claim just about anything you like.</p>
<p>And the same seems to be true&#8211;more and more these days and not for the good&#8211;for blogs too.</p>
<p>As for me, I need to get back to my goal of proving that sparkly vampires <em>do</em> exist.</p>

<p>A panoply of big media giants sent a cease-and-desist letter today to <a href="http://www.zite.com/">Zite</a>, the Apple iPad news reader app.</p>
<p>The Washington Post, AP, Gannett, Getty Images, Time, Dow Jones and many other media organizations were part of the action, which you can read all about below.</p>
<p>Zite bills itself as a &#8220;personalized iPad magazine that gets smarter as you use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not smart enough, it seems, to avoid copyright complaints from the content creators the app sucks in.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Zite application is plainly unlawful,&#8221; said the letter to Zite CEO Ali Davar, noting all kinds of copyright violations.</p>
<p>In a phone interview with BoomTown this afternoon, Davar said Zite would comply with the letter by shifting the content from its &#8220;reading&#8221; mode to a Web one, which points to publisher sites.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a bummer that they did this, but we expected it,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>In a comment he posted below, Davar also wrote:</p>
<p>&#8220;Zite&#8217;s goal is to work with publishers, not to be antagonistic. The few publishers that have contacted us regarding the reading mode view we have complied with their requests and simply switched over to web view. We&#8217;re talking to publishers right now to find a win-win for them monetarily and to at the same time preserve the great user experience.&#8221;</p>
<p>For now, it&#8217;s lose-lose, and the letter is a dramatic shot across the bow of all the many news readers now hitting the market in the wake of the popularity of the Apple iPad tablet.</p>
<p>The social media-focused <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101202/flipboard-partners-with-web-publishers-for-full-content-full-disclosure-including-atd">Flipboard</a> and the news-oriented <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Pulse</a> are two others, both of which have claimed they are working with publishers.</p>
<p>But Pulse <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100608/meet-the-two-grad-students-who-freaked-out-the-nyt-the-pulse-ipad-app-creators-speak">wrangled with the New York Times</a> over misuse of its RSS feeds and copyright issues, which has since been settled.</p>
<p>Zite showed up <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110308/zite-launches-even-more-personalized-ipad-magazine-app">earlier this month</a>, a product of a machine-learning technology start-up called Worio, which is based in Vancouver, Canada.</p>
<p>The aggregator of personalized content, which has $4 million in angel funding, gets its cues from a user&#8217;s interests.</p>
<p>Zite&#8217;s technology originated at research at the University of British Columbia several years ago.</p>
<p>In an interview with NetworkEffect&#8217;s Liz Gannes a few weeks ago, Davar seemed sanguine about publishers.</p>

The app lays out pictures and articles, stripping out everything else, including ads. Davar said he doubted this would be a problem. “It would be shortsighted for publishers to think of Zite as us versus them,” he said.</p></blockquote>

<p>It&#8217;s called &#8220;Attack the Block,&#8221; and is about a teen gang fighting an alien invasion. Plus, it has the best tag line ever: &#8220;Inner City Versus Outer Space.&#8221;</p>
<p>Which is just about how I am feeling about SXSW!</p>
<p>In any case, despite my lack of hipster cred, I will be there for a party hosted by WordPress with drinks by The Wall Street Journal Digital Network and <strong>All Things Digital</strong> on Friday, as well as to interview Flipboard Co-founder and CEO Mike McCue on Saturday in an afternoon session with the subtitle: <a href="http://schedule.sxsw.com/events/event_IAP000328">&#8220;Game-Changer or Passing Fad?&#8221;</a></p>
<p>NetworkEffect&#8217;s Liz Gannes and The Digital Solution&#8217;s Katherine Boehret will also be at SXSW, so expect plenty of coverage from Texas.</p>

It doesn&#8217;t make viral videos, but it does help sites create custom ad units that fit with the flavor of their community of sites, like Reddit and BuzzFeed. The company charges on a cost-per-view basis. And yes, it guarantees it can get your funny ad a lot of views.</p>
<p>In advertising speak, San Francisco-based Sharethrough combines earned media and paid media. For example, it helped get this recent <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC0vb9XDz38">short film for Lego</a> by Pereira &amp; O&#8217;Dell, which was rather nifty on its own, 1.5 million views in two weeks on various platforms.</p>

<p>Sharethrough competes with companies such as Visible Measures, TubeMogul and Jun Group. And together, they&#8217;re competing with more conventional video ad units, like pre-rolls. The various firms are all trying to gain visibility in the emerging social video ad market by releasing stats and forecasts. Visible Measures <a href="http://corp.visiblemeasures.com/news-and-events/blog/bid/32969/Social-Video-Advertising-2010-in-Review">said</a> social video ad campaigns generated more than 2.7 billion views in 2010, up from 820 million in 2009. And here&#8217;s a recent <a href="http://9.mshcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/info-large.jpg">demographic breakdown of Jun Group data</a>.</p>
<p>Sharethrough, for its part, said it is now signing $75,000 campaigns on average, up from $20,000 a year ago. It has also doubled its number of customers to 100 in the last year.</p>
<p>If you count YouTube, according to Sharethrough CEO Dan Greenberg, the social video ad market is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Everyone else probably counts for about $50 million combined, he said.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a video of Greenberg explaining Sharethrough and what it does. His company has raised a total of $6 million from investors including North Bridge Venture Partners and Floodgate.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With all the bated breath over Google&#8217;s efforts to compete in social, anything the company releases is going to be carefully scrutinized. (Take that as fair warning: NetworkEffect is about to spend 500 words on a minor product launch.)</p>
<p>What Google is doing today is making some careful tweaks to weave social signals into search: Most notably, bringing social search results up from the bottom of the page and parsing links shared by friends.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/MikeCassidy.png"><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/MikeCassidy-275x142.png" alt="" title="MikeCassidy" width="275" height="142" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3707" /></a>Google has tried to bring in new blood to help it &#8220;get social,&#8221; most prominently hiring the PayPal and Slide founder Max Levchin by <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100806/google-owns-up-to-owning-slide/">acquiring Slide</a>. Today&#8217;s social search launch was put together by another serial entrepreneur who came into the company through an acquisition: Mike Cassidy. His last company, an online travel guide called Ruba, was sold to Google last May.</p>
<p>Cassidy was a significant get for Google, though he&#8217;s stayed under the radar till now. Prior to Ruba, Cassidy had founded and sold three previous companies: Xfire, Direct Hit and Stylus Innovation.</p>
<p>While his title at Google&#8211;product management director for search&#8211;doesn&#8217;t have the word &#8220;social&#8221; in it, Cassidy noted in a phone interview on Wednesday that Ruba was a social company; it was specifically focused on recommendations by friends. In fact, he said, an early name for Ruba, which was backed by Benchmark Capital and Draper Fisher Jurvetson, was &#8220;Friendstips.&#8221;</p>
<p>Back to Thursday&#8217;s launch: Google already has a &#8220;social search&#8221; product that turns up for a minority of queries in the No. 9 and 10 spots at the bottom of its results page for logged-in users who have connected their Google accounts to social services like Twitter.</p>
<p>Now those results will show up scattered throughout regular results. But that&#8217;s only for users who are logged in, and only when a social result is deemed relevant.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Googlesocialsearch.png"><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Googlesocialsearch-380x119.png" alt="" title="Googlesocialsearch" width="380" height="119" class="aligncenter size-Medium380 wp-image-3708" /></a>The other big change is Google will also now give higher ranking to URLs that are shared as links by friends on public sites like Twitter and Quora. Google will try to determine on a per-user and per-tweet basis if a link is relevant to a certain searcher based on which users shared it.</p>
<p>So, for instance, if an article was shared by a person you are friends with on multiple services, Google will think it&#8217;s probably more important to you. Or if a video has been shared by a lot of people, including your friends, there&#8217;s a good chance it will turn up high in your results on that topic.</p>
<p>Lastly, Google is tidying up some stuff so users can link social services to their Google accounts without displaying them for all to see on their public Google profiles.</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s search folks are not necessarily in alignment about the importance of social. Cassidy said Wednesday, &#8220;Recommendations from friends are some of the most powerful recommendations in the world. We&#8217;re trying to turbopower that. Google&#8217;s mission is organizing the world&#8217;s information, and this is an extension of that.&#8221;</p>
<p>But one of Google&#8217;s search scientists was <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/print/magazine/content/11_06/b4214050441614.htm">recently quoted</a> pooh-poohing the potential for social to change search. &#8220;Social is just one signal. It&#8217;s a tiny signal,&#8221; Amit Singhal told Bloomberg BusinessWeek.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href="http://searchengineland.com/what-social-signals-do-google-bing-really-count-55389">side-by-side comparison</a> from Search Engine Land about what social signals Bing and Google used as of December. Since then, Bing has <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101215/microsoft-shares-its-new-years-resolutions-for-bing/">upped its special integration with Facebook</a> to include pages &#8220;liked&#8221; by searchers&#8217; friends.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I like to write about actual numbers, but start-ups are usually reluctant to give them up, preferring to blab about growth percentages and fuzzy feel-good milestones.</p>
<p>The lightweight blogging company <a href="http://posterous.com/">Posterous</a> volunteered to open its books recently, coughing up every product stat NetworkEffect asked for during a recent visit to the company&#8217;s oversized San Francisco Mission District office situated below a yoga studio whose clientele is way more clompy-footed than I might have thought.</p>
<p>The Posterous team, led by CEO Sachin Agarwal, was pimping its new groups product, launched Dec. 15, that&#8217;s kind of like a nice-looking Web interface for an email product like Yahoo Groups, turning messages into blog posts and smoothing photos and other attachments into easily viewable form. Used mostly for private communication (like a neighborhood group or a small business team), the groups tool supports users who participate by email without opening a Posterous account.</p>
<p>First of all, Posterous Groups is still quite small: Posterous has 12.3 million total blogs, and only 134,000 of them are groups. About 3,000 groups are created per day, or about 20 percent of total daily sign-ups.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Posteroustraffic.png"><img class="alignright size-Medium380 wp-image-3693" title="Posteroustraffic" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Posteroustraffic-380x214.png" alt="" width="380" height="214" /></a>Overall, Posterous has 9.2 million monthly visitors on its own site and on custom domains, according to <a href="http://www.quantcast.com/p-16ewveTurfCCM">Quantcast</a>, which measures the service directly with its permission. That&#8217;s up from 6 million in September, but still quite a bit less than competitors like Tumblr and WordPress, which have 59.6 million and 517 million people, respectively.</p>
<p>The new groups product sends a ton of email (with user permission, and with the help of SendGrid): 230,000 messages per day. Half of Posterous group distribution is over email rather than the Web, and 30 percent of users are not registered.</p>
<p>As I mentioned earlier, most groups&#8211;76 percent&#8211;are private. And a quarter are for corporate groups&#8211;an alternative to business collaboration tools like Yammer. Business groups have an average of 15 people, while family groups have about 10.</p>
<p>As for revenue numbers? Negligible. The company is only starting Google AdSense revenue sharing and talking about business accounts.</p>
<p>Posterous has raised about $5 million in funding from investors including Redpoint Ventures, Trinity Ventures, SV Angel, Founder Collective, Lowercase Capital and Y Combinator.</p>

<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Assistly.png"><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Assistly-150x54.png" alt="" title="Assistly" width="150" height="54" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3675" /></a>Either way, <a href="http://www.assistly.com/">Assistly</a> helps companies deal with our problems by providing a Web-based customer service and support platform that combines more traditional methods like email, chat and phone with Twitter and, as of today, Facebook. The idea is to make support more efficient and coordinated.</p>
<p>So now, if you post about your problems on the Facebook walls of Assistly customers like 37signals, Vimeo, Rdio, Grooveshark and even Twitter, you might get a quicker and better-delegated response from employees there. (Though the new Assistly Facebook option just rolled out today, so they may not be using it yet.)</p>
<p>There are many (so, so many) social media management tools, but Assistly is more competitive with customer support providers like Zendesk. (Both Zendesk and Assistly already offer Twitter support, but Assistly is first to offer Facebook. Twitter itself uses Zendesk for customer support via email and Assistly for customer support via tweet.)</p>
<p>Assistly CEO Alex Bard and members of his team have been working on customer support software dating back to 1996 with eShare Technologies, followed by eAssist Global Solutions, founded in 1999. More recently they made the Goowy widget analytics platform that was bought by AOL in 2008. Their current company has raised about $5 million from investors True Ventures and Social Leverage.</p>
<p>For its own customers, Assistly starts at <a href="http://reg.assistly.com/free-trial">$39 per month</a> per full-time user, but it also has an hourly rate so companies can spread the responsibility for customer support across all their employees.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://1000memories.com/">1000Memories</a>, the social media site for friends and family to memorialize loved ones who&#8217;ve passed away, is disclosing today it has raised $3 million worth of funding, including a Series A round led by Greylock Partners.</p>
<p>The money was actually raised last fall in two rounds after the company completed the Y Combinator program, but for whatever reason it&#8217;s been kept under wraps. NetworkEffect took the opportunity to talk with co-founder Rudy Adler about his year-old start-up this week.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/1000Memories.png"><img class="aligncenter size-Medium380 wp-image-3649" title="1000Memories" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/1000Memories-380x205.png" alt="" width="380" height="205" /></a>&#8220;The Internet was missing a past tense,&#8221; is Adler&#8217;s quip to explain the motivation for 1000Memories. The site offers a central place for mourners to contribute pictures, stories and the like, with the promise of becoming a permanent collaborative obituary and eulogy.</p>
<p>Sites like Facebook don&#8217;t have a great way of dealing with people who pass away, because they are designed for living participants, Adler said. Creating accounts for dead people can be awkward, but perhaps less so on a dedicated, nicely designed site.</p>
<p>Future premium products for 1000Memories may include custom domains, physical memory books, personalized designs and additional storage, Adler said. The company currently helps its users do things like rip and post DVDs, in part because they are often much older and less tech savvy than the average social media user.</p>
<p>1000Memories recently launched a groups feature that was <a href="http://1000memories.com/egypt">used to memorialize those killed in the Egyptian protests</a>. It went viral, with more than 400,000 page views, Adler said.</p>
<p>In addition to Greylock, participants in the $2.5 million Series A round included Caterina Fake, Ron Conway, Keith Rabois, Mike Maples, Paul Buchheit and Chris Sacca. It came through just a couple of months after 1000Memories had raised an angel round worth $500,000.</p>

She&#8217;ll be reporting to Adam Bain, the company&#8217;s president of global revenue, who joined last year from Fox Interactive Media.</p>
<p>Steele is a longtime marketing exec with previous stints at the video ad start-up Tremor Media and Coca-Cola. She comes to Twitter at a time when the company is finally focusing on turning its service into a business. Twitter is expected to have about $100 million in revenue in 2011. It was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101215/exclusive-twitter-raises-200-million-at-3-7-billion-valuation-adds-mccue-and-rosenblatt-to-board/">valued at $3.7 billion</a> in its most recent funding round, and well above that in <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101129/twitters-buffet-of-options-investors-like-dst-or-acquirers-like-google/">off-and-on acquisition talks with Facebook and Google</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Aaron Sittig put in five years on the Facebook team, joining in the very early days of the company and designing many of the service&#8217;s icons as well as conceptualizing key experiences like tagging friends in photos. Last year, he was part of a <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101130/facebook-engineering-director-aditya-agarwal-departs/">stream</a> of longtime Facebook folks who left the company to see what the world outside the walled garden had to offer.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/AaronSittig.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3529" title="AaronSittig" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/AaronSittig-275x195.png" alt="" width="220" height="156" /></a>But Sittig is now back at the mother ship, having rejoined in January with the title &#8220;product architect,&#8221; as Kim-Mai Cutler at Inside Facebook <a href="http://www.insidefacebook.com/2011/02/11/sittig-facebook-product-architect/">reported</a> Friday.</p>
<p>This comes at a time when Facebook has more than 2,000 employees, <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110208/inside-facebooks-big-move-to-menlo-park/">plans to move to a corporate campus</a> within the next year and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110106/even-if-it-had-500-shareholders-today-facebook-doesnt-have-to-disclose-financials-until-spring-of-2012/">says an IPO is likely in 2012</a>. It&#8217;s a lot different from when Sittig first joined in 2005.</p>
<p>Sittig had been away from the company only six months before accepting an offer to return. He told NetworkEffect that he felt the outside world lacked the &#8220;scale and ambition&#8221; of Facebook. Plus, he was lured by some of Facebook&#8217;s recent hires: Sam Lessin and Justin Shaffer, brought in through the acquisitions of their companies <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101102/mark-zuckerberg-really-really-wanted-to-work-with-sam-lessin/">Drop.io</a> and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100728/facebook-wont-spend-much-bread-on-hot-potato/">Hot Potato</a>, respectively (both of which occurred while Sittig was away).</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Sittig&#8217;s explanation:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>I left Facebook last June because I&#8217;d been there for five years and wanted to see what else I could apply myself to. I didn&#8217;t expect at the time that I&#8217;d head back.</p>
<p>I spent my time off advising companies and looking for new ideas. But for each idea I wanted to build myself, I kept realizing that Facebook was the only place with the scale and ambition where I could build my ideas successfully.</p>
<p>So that, combined with the steady influx of talented people like Sam Lessin and Justin Shaffer, convinced me to say yes when I was approached with an offer to rejoin.</p></blockquote>
<p>Prior to Facebook, Sittig worked at Napster, after it bought the Mac client Macster that he had helped develop. He studied philosophy at UC Berkeley. Sittig has made angel investments in companies such as Hearsay, which makes <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110203/hearsay-labs-brings-compliance-to-social-media/">corporate social media management tools</a>.</p>

<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/iPhone_stream_view.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3549" title="iPhone_stream_view" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/iPhone_stream_view-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" /></a>The company has a not-too-shabby 35 million downloads to date of its <a href="http://www.cooliris.com/desktop/how-to-launch-and-use/">Wall product</a>, and is the default media gallery for Google&#8217;s Android. But now it&#8217;s venturing out into the oh-so-hot mobile media-sharing space (see: Instagram, Path, Picplz) with a photo app called <a href="http://www.liveshare.com/">LiveShare</a>&#8211;for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7 and the Web&#8211;that&#8217;s focused on groups.</p>
<p>Cooliris is also announcing today that it&#8217;s raised $9.6 million in Series C funding from investors including Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp; Byers (which also <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110201/path-raises-8-65m-from-kleiner-index/">recently backed</a> Path), Deutsche Telekom’s T-Venture, DAG Ventures and the Westly Group. The five-year-old Palo Alto-based company has now raised a total of $28.6 million and employs 45 people.</p>
<p>Cooliris&#8217;s new LiveShare app helps users create photo streams for a particular event or group of people. Everyone who is invited to a stream can share photos, taken on a phone or elsewhere. Cooliris CEO Soujanya Bhumkar said that he thinks this &#8220;hyperpersonalized&#8221; approach fits with how people think about sharing: With respect to the four aspects of space, time, interests and relationships.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Android_Create_Stream.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-3550" title="Android_Create_Stream" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Android_Create_Stream-168x300.jpg" alt="" width="168" height="300" /></a>What does that actually mean? While Path pushes users to identify their closest 50 friends for <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101114/path-the-social-app-thats-not-viral-by-design/">intimate sharing of personal photos and videos</a>, LiveShare gives users the option of sharing with whoever is appropriate for any context.</p>
<p>There are many alternatives to LiveShare, especially for Apple&#8217;s iOS platform. Will users want to install yet another app because of its particular set of nifty features and the flexibility of its sharing options? Perhaps not, but people seem to increasingly <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110101/the-social-webs-big-new-theme-for-2011-multiple-identities-for-everyone/">utilize tools to segment their online identities</a>, so LiveShare could become part of that trend.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also competition from the social Web giant Facebook, which provides a similar way to filter its Web site based on designated friend groups (though it has not disclosed how popular the product is with users). LiveShare, like many social apps, gets its friend network information from users plugging into Facebook.</p>
<p>But Cooliris isn&#8217;t starting from scratch with this product. For instance, the company is making use of its existing relationship with Google, so LiveShare will be incorporated into Android&#8217;s Gallery. But with nearly $30 million raised, expectations for LiveShare will be very, very high.</p>

<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/GoogleVentures.png"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3512" title="GoogleVentures" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/GoogleVentures-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>The VC arm, which gets $100 million from Google each year to invest as it sees fit, wants to give more early-stage companies seed funding, and to that end has taken over an enormous Google-owned building in Mountain View, Calif., and started filling it with companies. The space is mostly empty; there are just about 20 people working there now.</p>
<p>Google Ventures Partner David Krane took us on a tour of the Startup Lab, which opened in October and is currently occupied by start-ups like <a href="https://www.lawpivot.com/">LawPivot</a> (legal Q&amp;A) and <a href="http://www.opencandy.com/">OpenCandy</a> (software discovery), a product group from the vacation rental roll-up company <a href="http://www.homeaway.com/">HomeAway</a>, and the yet-to-be-launched company of GrandCentral (now Google Voice) founder Craig Walker (which Google Ventures hasn&#8217;t invested in yet, though it&#8217;s made Walker an entrepreneur in residence).</p>
<p>The companies each pay $5 per month for as much space as they need, filled with recycled furniture from AdMob. They get a ping-pong table, free bikes and a microkitchen filled with snacks, courtesy of Google. They also added their own barbecue for the universal getting-to-know-you activity of grilling meat.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is not to be thought of as any sort of curated environment,&#8221; Krane said, anticipating the are-you-copying-Y-Combinator question. &#8220;This is merely work space.&#8221;</p>
<p>Krane said he mostly leaves the companies at the Startup Lab alone, stopping by about once a week. Google Ventures occupies its own floor of a building over on the other side of campus, right below Google&#8217;s autonomous car team, and also has offices in New York City, Cambridge, Mass., and Seattle.</p>
<p>Google Ventures has made about 30 total investments to date, with one exit: <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101012/game-on-dena-buys-iphone-developer-ngmoco-for400-million/">Ngmoco to DeNA</a>. Just last week, it closed its first deal with a company led by former Google employees, the Web security provider <a href="http://www.dasient.com/about/leadership/">Dasient</a>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s kind of crazy that a two-year-old venture firm with a staff of about 20 former Google employees wouldn&#8217;t have stumbled into investing in a former Googler&#8217;s company before now. And this is at a time when Google is fighting a talent war against its own employees&#8217; entrepreneurial urges, which often lead them to join younger companies or start their own.</p>
<p>Krane said to expect more deals with former Googlers as Google Ventures &#8220;will do substantially more than 30 deals&#8221; this year.</p>
<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t advocate or want people to leave Google,&#8221; Google Ventures Partner Bill Maris said, &#8220;but if someone has the entrepreneurial bug at that exit interview&#8230;&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;If you want to liberate a society, just give them the Internet,&#8221; Ghonim said in an <a href="http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2011/02/11/exp.ghonim.facebook.thanks.cnn?hpt=Sbin">interview with CNN</a>.</p>
<p>Ghonim gives credit to the <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110209/inside-egypts-facebook-bunker-video/">young Egyptians who organized themselves on Facebook</a>, dating back to last June when activist Khaled Said was killed. Ghonim commented on how a video posted on Facebook (where he is administrator of a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/elshaheeed.co.uk">page commemorating Said</a>) would be quickly shared by 50,000 people, calling Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg a personal hero.</p>
<p>Ghonim said he <a href="http://twitter.com/Ghonim/status/36112154918649856">plans</a> to write a book on the topic called &#8220;Revolution 2.0.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mubarak&#8217;s government had <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110127/internet-service-disrupted-in-egypt-before-planned-protests/?mod=ATD_search">shut down</a> much of Egyptian Internet access and SMS service for nearly a week during the protests, then made concessions to not run for another term, but protests only intensified until he finally agreed to step down today.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook <a href="http://developers.facebook.com/blog/post/461">announced</a> this week it will begin enforcing a policy that requires app developers to run advertising from a list of approved providers. The list is not short&#8211;it includes <a href="http://developers.facebook.com/adproviders/">40-some options</a>&#8211;but it notably does not include Google&#8217;s AdSense and DoubleClick.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Fence.png"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3484" title="Fence" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Fence-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>Facebook is not necessarily targeting Google specifically, but it&#8217;s an obvious omission. The social networking giant said ad providers can join the list if they agree to certain <a href="http://developers.facebook.com/ad_provider_terms/">restrictions on advertising</a>, which include a commitment to never utilize Facebook user data.</p>
<p>Facebook and Google have warred over transmitting user data in the past, with a <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101109/no-facebook-user-emails-for-google-but-yahoo-and-microsoft-already-have-access/">back-and-forth over exporting user email addresses</a> turning nasty in public last fall.</p>
<p>Facebook will start enforcing the whitelist ad provider policy starting Feb. 28. At that point, app developers who run Google ads&#8211;which seems a natural thing to do, given so many publishers use Google ads on other platforms&#8211;will have to shut them off and find another provider.</p>
<p>A spokesperson for Facebook said, &#8220;We are continuing to work with various ad providers and will add them to the list as they sign the terms. Note that the policy doesn&#8217;t go into effect for a few more weeks.&#8221; Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Google declined to comment.</p>
<p>The CEO of an approved ad provider commented that Facebook&#8217;s efforts to &#8220;restore control and authority of how third-party companies work within its platform&#8221; make sense and are generally good for users. (And also good for him, with Google out of the hunt!)</p>
