<p>Another significant departure from Yahoo: Steve Schultz (pictured here), who was GM of its important and powerful Yahoo Finance unit, has left the company to become COO of <a href="http://www.pageonce.com">Pageonce</a>, an online personal-finance &#8220;assistant.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yesterday, the editor-in-chief of Yahoo&#8217;s Shine women&#8217;s site, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100908/yahoos-shine-editor-in-chief-departs-for-conde-nasts-lucky-magazine/">Brandon Holley</a>, left Yahoo to run Lucky magazine for Condé Nast.</p>
<p>Also recently gone from Yahoo (YHOO): Social platforms head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100827/exclusive-yahoo-social-platforms-head-sample-departs-for-ebay">Neal Sample</a> to eBay (EBAY) and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100823/exclusive-yahoos-communications-head-jason-titus-departs/">Jason Titus</a>, who ran its communications products unit and whose next job is unknown.</p>
<p>Schultz, though, is landing at a Palo Alto, Calif., start-up that has raised $8 million in venture funding. Pageonce collects online financial information and displays it on a unified and personalized page.</p>
<p>Schultz, who has been at Yahoo five years, was, according to his company bio, &#8220;responsible for business and content strategy and oversees business development, partnerships, marketing and sales. Prior to this role, Steve led product efforts in Yahoo!&#8217;s personalization products group, where he launched Yahoo!&#8217;s unified user profiling platform and managed personalization strategy and implementation efforts for Yahoo.com and My Yahoo!&#8221;</p>
<p>In the interests of fairness, BoomTown lobbed an email into PR at Yahoo tonight for the name of the person taking over for Schultz and also a list of major execs the Silicon Valley Internet giant <em>is</em> hiring.</p>
<p>Yahoo said no one has been named yet to replace Schultz.</p>

<p>During his tenure at Yahoo!, Yahoo! Finance doubled its market share attracting more than 40 million unique visitors according to Comscore. He led its business and content strategy, business development and strategic partnerships which included relationships with Intuit, Fidelity Investments, Dow Jones, ScottTrade, Bankrate and Bloomberg.com. He was also responsible for Yahoo! Finance’s original content strategy, oversaw the site&#8217;s push into mobile applications, and entered partnerships with dozens of new content providers. With Yahoo! Real Estate, Schultz helped lead the site from the #10 to the #2 real estate destination on the Web, was named one of the 100 most influential leaders in the real estate industry by Inman News in 2009, and architected a strategic partnership with Zillow.com in 2010.</p>

<p>As Yahoo (YHOO) <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100817/exclusive-yahoo-eyes-cafemom-for-100-million-acquisition/">seeks to sort out its women&#8217;s strategy</a> online, Brandon Holley (pictured here)&#8211;the editor-in-chief of its main women-focused site, Shine&#8211;is leaving for a job with the same title at Condé Nast&#8217;s Lucky magazine.</p>
<p>In the women&#8217;s space, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080331/shine-on-shine-on-yahoo-soon-before-the-buy">Yahoo&#8217;s Shine site</a>, is huge, but has lagged in social networking and other current trends.</p>
<p>Juicing it up is important, since the women&#8217;s market is a big one for advertisers, with many competitors&#8211;from iVillage to AOL (AOL) to a recent effort by Demand Media to reach women using a site created with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100628/exclusive-tyra-banks-picks-demand-as-americas-next-top-digital-business-model">supermodel Tyra Banks</a>.</p>
<p>Here is the press release from the New York media giant about the move by Holley, who had been at Condé Nast before (and you can read a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/18/fashion/18holley.html">story here in the New York Times</a> from earlier this year, in which she compares her online and offline jobs):</p>

<p>Under Ms. Holley&#8217;s leadership, Yahoo! Shine attracted 25 million visitors per month, according to comScore. Her appointment at Lucky marks a return to Condé Nast for Ms. Holley, who was Editor in Chief of Jane from 2005 to 2007, when it ceased publication. In 2001 she launched ELLEgirl where she remained editor until 2005. Ms. Holley served as senior editor at GQ from 1998 to 2000. She was also part of the launch team of Time Out New York where she served as the dining and shopping editor from 1995 to 1998. She started her magazine career as a writer for Paper magazine and worked as a fact checker for Rolling Stone. In 2002, Ms. Holley was named one of Advertising Age&#8217;s Women to Watch.</p>
<p>Lucky and Luckymag.com focus on shopping and style, showcasing what to wear and how to wear it, while making fashion and beauty fun and accessible. The magazine, which launched in 2000, has a circulation of 1.1 million. Condé Nast, a division of Advance Publications, operates in 25 countries.</p>
<p>In the United States, Condé Nast publishes 18 consumer magazines, two trade publications and 27 websites that garner international acclaim and unparalleled consumer engagement.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On Friday, BoomTown was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100121/boomtown-heads-to-sundance-film-festival-in-the-fifth-annual-meet-the-geeks-pilgrimage/">back at the Sundance Film Festival</a> for the fifth time for my annual techie panel at the famous independent film confab.</p>
<p>This year, we opened the New Frontier on Main series with a session titled, &#8220;Spotlight on Social Media: Successful Strategies for Storytellers.&#8221;</p>
<p>Panelists included Robert Tercek, president of digital media for OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network; filmmaker Ondi Timoner; Chris Gebhardt, head of Participant Media’s TakePart social media platform, which just sold a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100125/education-documentary-featuring-bill-gates-gets-first-distribution-deal-at-sundance/">documentary featuring Bill Gates</a> of Microsoft (MSFT); David Eun, head of film partnerships for  Google (GOOG) video unit YouTube; Jason Hirschhorn, chief product officer of News Corp. (NWS) social site MySpace; and Matt Jacobson, Facebook&#8217;s market development exec.</p>
<p>The conversation was super lively about how social tools can bring filmmakers closer to their audience&#8211;before, during and after a work&#8217;s creation. There was also a lot of talk about how the Web gives movies with little chance of theatrical distribution more opportunity to be seen and possibly make money.</p>
<p>But still, with ever more disaggregation of entertainment and the confusing array of new mobile devices to receive content, it is not clear that Silicon Valley can save the day for anyone trying to reignite the indie space via software, hardware or any Web innovation.</p>
<p>Incredibly, Oprah dude Tercek ignored my brilliant idea for an Oprah-cam attached to the television host&#8217;s head. As in Oprah 24-7! Talk about social storytelling!</p>

<p>Rent the Runway, which started Monday, marks another entry into the growing market of online luxury rental services. Shoppers can browse its selection of dresses and rent them at roughly 10 percent of their retail price, then return it in a prepaid envelope.</p>
<p>Before that, Madeline Passarelli, a former fashion editor at Lucky, introduced Wear Today, Gone Tomorrow in March. <p>For many years now, one of our regular attendees at the <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference has been award-winning movie and television director, producer and writer Barry Sonnenfeld, who is&#8211;as it turns out&#8211;a not-so-closeted geek in his spare time.</p>
<p>(He also appeared onstage in 2006 at <strong>D4</strong> in an interview with Walt Mossberg, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/d/gallery/d4/">which you can see here</a>.)</p>
<p>In fact, the man behind movies like &#8220;Men in Black&#8221; and TV shows like &#8220;Pushing Daisies&#8221; (and who likes to sport a Stetson and cowboy boots 24/7) does a gadget review column for Esquire magazine called &#8220;The Digital Man.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now he is branching out to <a href="http://crackle.com/c/The_Esquire_Digital_Man">a vlog about his geek passions on Crackle</a>, which will appear every two weeks from wherever he is&#8211;either from his homes in East Hampton, N.Y. or Telluride, Colo., or from movie or TV sets.</p>
<p>And, compared to the cinéma vérité style of BoomTown (translation: shaky filming and bad sound), Sonnenfeld&#8217;s vlogs are pretty high quality, although they are not too overdone as those from Hollywood types always are, and it&#8217;s hard not to admire the editorial use of a martini.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s his intro video vlog below, as well as one about a cross-country trip Sonnenfeld and his &#8220;analog&#8221; dog, named Lucky, took in a 2010 Ford Taurus SHO (super high output) and another about his experience helping his wife, Sweetie, cook for some film industry friends using the Traeger Professional Wood Pellet Grill.</p>
<p>Next week: A chain saw, although I hope Sonnenfeld will go light on the martinis for that demo.</p>

<p>Several years ago, when I once asked Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer if the software giant was ever going to be able to catch No. 1 Google in market share in the increasingly lucrative search arena&#8211;despite years of trying and billions in investment in its Web businesses overall&#8211;he said something I shall never forget.</p>
<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t actually have to catch the leader,&#8221; said the pugnacious tech leader. &#8220;We just have to surpass the No. 2 to have a great business.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the time, Ballmer meant Yahoo (YHOO), of course, and his intention was clear to me. While it was probably well-nigh impossible to get into the pole position Google (GOOG) is in, Microsoft could begin an attack if it could crush Yahoo first.</p>
<p>Easier said than done, of course, with little movement in share so far&#8211;even after early labored and expensive organic efforts, a failed takeover attempt to buy Yahoo and endless but still fruitless talks about a partnership with the Internet giant.</p>
<p>But now with a very credible and consumer-friendly revamped service called Bing, which is getting a big slug of marketing money, Microsoft (MSFT) might actually have a product that at least has a better chance to gain market share.</p>
<p>While by no means certain or lasting, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090617/so-thats-what-100-million-gets-you-microsofts-bing-grabbing-more-search-share-for-now/">early results from surveys are promising</a> and&#8211;combined with distribution deals the software giant recently signed too&#8211;could give Microsoft the kind of momentum is has long needed.</p>
<p>This is obviously not good news for Yahoo, which will doubtlessly be the one losing market share if it is to be lost.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, some think Google might be more impacted since its users make a conscious choice to use it and Bing is a direct alternative in this regard, while Yahoo&#8217;s users use search when they are using other parts of the site. (See comments below, which make excellent points.)</p>
<p>But, in any developing arms wars, it is not a good idea to get caught between monied giants and Yahoo needs to make sure it does not become the grass in an elephant battle.</p>
<p>In a recent onstage interview with me at the seventh <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, in fact, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090616/yahoo-ceo-carol-bartz-the-full-d7-session-unexpurgated/">Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz said Yahoo definitely needed to maintain</a> its 20 percent share.</p>
<p>Bad news for her then, when yesterday Ballmer shot another one across the Yahoo bow, by telling a <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idINN1840991120090618?rpc=44">group of business execs at a luncheon</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;Our shareholders, I told them we were willing to spend 5 to 10 percent of operating income for up to five years in this business, and we feel like we can get an economic return.&#8221;</p>
<p>Since it is cash-spewing Microsoft&#8211;more than $20 billion in operating income last year&#8211;that&#8217;s a lot of money.</p>
<p>And, even if history has not been kind of Microsoft&#8217;s like-a-drunken-sailor spending before in the Internet space, there is no question the company has an obsessive commitment to eventually gain ground, grinding down companies like Yahoo if need be.</p>
<p>And within the larger context of Ballmer and Bartz in hot-and-cold discussions about a search and advertising partnership deal, his statement is clearly a signal to Yahoo to get on the Microsoft train or run the risk of getting run over.</p>
<p>Thus, Bartz has got to ask herself one question as she ponders what to do: <em>Do I feel lucky?</em></p>

<p>BoomTown landed at New York&#8217;s JFK Airport this morning and, of course, could not resist visiting the flagship Apple (AAPL) store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan on iPhone 3G Day.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s right! JesusPhone 2.0 is nigh!</p>
<p>(Well, <em>was</em> nigh, I guess, and apparently <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080711/ipocalypsenow/">unable to be activated due to system overload</a>.)</p>
<p>In any case, I did a particularly jumpy video of the doings at one of Apple&#8217;s most famous stores, as legions of New Yorkers waited in line for their cheaper, faster, prettier iPhone.</p>
<p>Added bonus: it includes an appearance at the end by my unimpressed-with-Steve-Jobs-worshipping-geeks mother, who goes by the name of&#8211;I am not kidding&#8211;<em>Lucky</em>.</p>
