EBay’s $800 million purchase of payments startup Braintree on behalf of its Paypal subsidiary has closed, according to a PayPal blog post. The acquisition gives Paypal a strong foothold in the world of mobile app payments, which it hopes to bolster with the smaller acquisition of StackMob, announced earlier this week.

Livefyre Acquires Analytics Startup Realtidbits

Lifefyre, the social commenting platform startup, announced Thursday it had acquired Realtidbits, a San Diego-based analytics startup. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Realtidbits will continue to work as a team based in Southern California. All Realtidbits users will be migrated over to Livefyre’s existing commenting platform, and the Realtidbits analytics software will eventually be offered to Livefyre’s enterprise customers.

Yahoo Acquires — And Will Shut Down — Social Advertising Startup Bread

Yahoo is adding six employees to its advertising staff via an acquisition, buying social advertising company Bread, the startup’s CEO Alan Chan announced in a blog post on Friday. Bread makes a URL shortener that displays an ad between the time that someone clicks on the shortened link and when they are taken to the related website. Chan, whose startup had raised $3.5 million from a group of investors including Lady Gaga manager and angel investor Troy Carter, said Bread would stop selling its products.
