			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In case you missed it, NBC has announced that the Super Bowl will be livestreamed on the Web, because, as my <strong>AllThingsD</strong> colleague Peter Kafka points out, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120131/nbc-puts-the-super-bowl-on-the-web-because-it-thinks-youll-watch-it-on-tv/">the network expects you to watch it on TV</a>. NFL.com will also carry NBC&#8217;s livestream, as will <a href="http://www.nfl.com/mobile">NFL Mobile</a> through Verizon Wireless.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/SuperBowlApp.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/SuperBowlApp-213x285.png" alt="" title="SuperBowlApp" width="213" height="285" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-170163" /></a></p>
<p>But for those more interested in the postgame highlights and analysis, the inaugural <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/super-bowl-xlvi-commemorative/id497584043?mt=8">Super Bowl XLVI app</a> from <a href="http://www.thenflmagazine.com/?gclid=CPipoOCP_a0CFUSo4AodHhqqrw">NFL Magazine</a> might do the trick.</p>
<p>The tablet app is meant to be more commemorative than anything else &#8212; think of those dust-gathering magazines you collect each year &#8212; and it won&#8217;t stream the game live. </p>
<p>The app will offer image-rich season recaps for both teams, player highlight reels, polls and Super Bowl history. (No word on whether it includes a slide show of Tom Brady&#8217;s hairstyles throughout the years.)</p>
<p>After the game, the app will be updated with 15 to 20 minutes of highlight clips, breakdowns of key plays, interviews with players, NFL.com articles on the game and 360-degree photos.</p>
<p>The video available on the app during and after the game will be &#8220;clean&#8221; game highlights from NFL Network. Later on, extended highlights from NFL Films, with NBC logos and graphics, will be made available through the app. </p>
<p>The app, which is available on the iPad and on Android tablets, is selling at a pregame discount of $2.99 &#8212; which is less than half of the postgame price.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen a lot of fan demand for this,&#8221; said Jeff Berman, general manager of NFL Digital Media. &#8220;We plan to keep the app fresh for several weeks as we introduce new content, and ultimately provide a kind of lifetime digital keepsake.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nielsen <a href="http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/in-the-u-s-tablets-are-tv-buddies-while-ereaders-make-great-bedfellows/">data </a>shows that 70 percent of tablet owners and 68 percent of smartphone owners use their devices while watching TV, while a poll conducted by Velti and Harris Interactive shows that nearly 60 percent of mobile users plan to look at or use their mobile device during the game. We&#8217;ll likely see some interesting data after Sunday, as well, about mobile usage during the Super Bowl. These metrics are key for advertisers as they try to gauge how many eyeballs are on second &#8212; and third, and fourth &#8212; screens during big television events.</p>
<p>And what about those Super Bowl ads, you ask? NFL Magazine&#8217;s Super Bowl app won&#8217;t feature any third-party ads this year, but it will include NFL promotions, as well as ads for The Daily, the tablet newspaper owned by News Corp. (which also owns this site), since the NFL is using The Daily&#8217;s technology platform to power the app. </p>
<p>Berman said that since this is the first time NFL Digital has done a commemorative Super Bowl app &#8212; it&#8217;s the NFL&#8217;s first tablet-only app, as well &#8212; they&#8217;re not focused on signing up a bunch of ad partners to start, though it&#8217;s a possibility for future versions of the app.</p>
<p>Revenue generation aside, the app means something else for rabid sports fans: The ability to call up key plays on your tablet whenever you feel like watching them. And rewatching them. And showing them to your friends. And discussing the nuances of the plays. </p>
<p>And unlike a commemorative magazine &#8212; which, by the way, the NFL will be producing, as well &#8212; the app provides an interactive and updatable experience. Look, Ma, moving pictures!</p>

It&#8217;s quite easy; it&#8217;s pretty good technology.&#8221;</p>
<p>Remnick has long supported a paywall around the online versions of his magazine&#8217;s articles, he said.</p>
<p>Yes, &#8220;information wants to be free,&#8221; when it comes to distribution &#8212; but not all information is created equally, Remnick noted. A piece reported from Afghanistan by New Yorker journalist Dexter Filkins is much different from one by Joe Shmoe, he said.</p>
<p>Increasingly, Remnick pushes and prods his writers to create online content for the New Yorker&#8217;s Web site and apps, whether it&#8217;s additional reporting material or a blog post about a news item.</p>
<p>But Remnick &#8212; who was self-effacing and precise in a conversation with Kara Swisher &#8212; was careful to say he&#8217;s not seeking to protect a form of writing for its own sake. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think length should be gratuitous,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There are pieces that don&#8217;t earn their length, and they&#8217;re called &#8216;boring.&#8217;&#8221;</p>

<p>Yesterday, before he jetted off for a glam trip to the tony World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Fortune magazine&#8217;s Adam Lashinsky met me at San Francisco International Airport to talk about his new book, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110903/fortunes-lashinsky-penning-an-inside-apple-book/">&#8220;Inside Apple: How America’s Most Admired &#8212; and Secretive &#8212; Company Really Works.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>An expansion of a well-read article that Lashinsky wrote for the publication last year, the book debuts tomorrow from Business Plus, an imprint of Hachette Book Group.</p>
<p>It is the second tome to come out of late about the iconic Silicon Valley company &#8212; the first, of course, being Walter Isaacson&#8217;s biography of the late Apple CEO and co-founder <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/steve-jobs/">Steve Jobs</a>, released in the fall by Simon &#038; Schuster and written with Jobs&#8217;s cooperation.</p>
<p>Lashinsky got no such access to Jobs, or Apple, either, for his deep inside look at the company. Given that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/apple/">Apple</a> is notoriously secretive and difficult to report about made the job harder still.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Lashinsky in a video interview, talking about how Apple does what it does, including the prospects for its recently installed CEO Tim Cook:</p>

<p>Of <em>course</em>, this infamous kooky cat-on-his-head photo from a Vanity Fair magazine shoot made it into an upcoming profile of Groupon CEO Andrew Mason. Lesley Stahl of &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; has done a piece on the Chicago-based social buying phenom, set to air this Sunday.</p>
<p>And, naturally, Stahl trots out the &#8220;goofy&#8221; description of Mason.</p>
<p>In addition, said the preview caption for the CBS television news show: &#8220;Groupon&#8217;s Andrew Mason says he may not be as smart, mature or experienced as other CEOs, but being company founder is his edge.&#8221;</p>
<p>Dumber, juvenile and just-arrived &#8212; but I created this three-ring circus with my own two hands? Sounds good to me!</p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Dow Jones is losing its top online editor.</p>
<p>Kevin Delaney, managing editor of The Journal Online &#8212; or WSJ.com, as it is better known &#8212; is taking a job at the Atlantic Media Company, sources said.</p>
<p>The move is a blow to the Journal&#8217;s online efforts, as Delaney, who got the top job in late 2009, is a well-regarded journalist and editor.</p>
<p>(He is certainly an <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> fave of those at the Dow Jones mother ship, but he <em>still</em> did not call me back to comment! Thanks a lot, Kevin!)</p>
<p>It has not yet been determined who will succeed him at WSJ.com, sources said. Delaney is not leaving immediately.</p>
<p>Delaney joined the media giant in 1992, was a prominent tech reporter in Silicon Valley, and was also deputy managing editor at WSJ.com.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear what Delaney&#8217;s new position will be at the Washington, D.C.-based Atlantic Media, which is best known for its flagship Atlantic Monthly magazine and also the National Journal. </p>
<p>But sources said his role will be part of a new content initiative the company is undertaking.</p>
<p>The well-known Atlantic has recently transformed itself from a coffee-table, big-think analog offering, which still is published, to focusing more on its online content site.</p>
<p>That includes its sassy Atlantic Wire, which is edited by former Gawker editor Gabriel Snyder. Two stories today, for example, are titled &#8220;Where the &#8216;Crybaby&#8217; Gingrich Meme Came From&#8221; and &#8220;Cain Promises &#8216;Unconventional&#8217; Endorsement, Jokes Ensue.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not your intellectually snotty uncle&#8217;s Atlantic!</p>
<p>I am looking forward to seeing what Delaney is up to soon.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Amazon has issued an apology tonight after upsetting Kindle owners, who learned this morning that they were selected to receive a publication they didn&#8217;t sign up for &#8212; and could be charged for in the future.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-144543" title="Amazon Kindle Fire" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/PJ-BD780_PTECHJ_DV_20111115171814-189x285.png" alt="" width="189" height="285" />The problems kicked off this morning when Amazon started sending emails to select Kindle owners, alerting them to a free trial of &#8220;The Kindle Compass.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the email, Amazon failed to explain what &#8220;The Kindle Compass&#8221; was, and worse, implied that customers would be charged for it going forward.</p>
<p>An Amazon spokesperson said a second letter has been sent this evening, explaining that &#8220;The Kindle Compass&#8221; is a pilot project, and apologizing for any confusion over the price. &#8220;We built it to always be free for customers, and you will never be charged for it,&#8221; the company told its customers.</p>
<p>Still, the response comes hours after much of the damage had already been done.</p>
<p>Angry customers flooded Kindle forums, posting more than 100 complaints to topics called <a href="http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle?_encoding=UTF8&amp;cdForum=Fx1D7SY3BVSESG&amp;cdThread=TxD8E5M8V47M9H">&#8220;Where is Kindle Compass Magazine?&#8221;</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle%20customer%20service%20q%20and%20a/ref=cm_cd_ttp_ef_tft_tp?_encoding=UTF8&amp;cdForum=Fx1GLDPZMNR1X53&amp;cdThread=TxXN3WORPDU9WC">&#8220;Auto-Subscription to the Kindle Compass??&#8221;</a></p>
<p>The confusion was understandable.</p>
<p>In the original message, Amazon misled consumers about the terms: &#8220;If you enjoy your free trial, do nothing and your subscription will automatically continue at the monthly subscription rate.&#8221;</p>
<p>However, no rate was ever mentioned.</p>
<p>Even worse, those who contacted Amazon customer service said the reps weren&#8217;t familiar with the publication, so the best they could do was help them to unsubscribe to ensure they would not be charged. At this point, people are still confused as to what &#8220;The Kindle Compass&#8221; is all about.</p>
<p>A spokesperson did not return emails asking for more clarity on what the publication is, and it&#8217;s unclear how many customers were affected (not all Kindle owners received the email).</p>
<p>In the forums, the complaints centered on two concerns: That Amazon would sign them up for something they did not knowingly subscribe to, and that they may be charged for it.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/forum/kindle%20customer%20service%20q%20and%20a/ref=cm_cd_ttp_ef_tft_tp?_encoding=UTF8&amp;cdForum=Fx1GLDPZMNR1X53&amp;cdThread=TxXN3WORPDU9WC">One consumer, who used the name &#8220;Susabelle&#8221;</a>, wrote: &#8220;I am absolutely APPALLED. Amazon, you should be completely ashamed of yourself!! An auto-subscription to a publication I&#8217;ve NEVER heard of, that you will be auto-billing me for after 14 days? HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND??&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Here is the apology Amazon sent to consumers this evening:</strong></p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Apple is planning an important &#8212; but not large-scale &#8212; event to be held in New York at the end of this month that will focus on a media-related announcement. </p>
<p>Per the usual caveat, the tech giant is well known for moving around their public show-and-tells, so this could certainly change at any moment.</p>
<p>But, for sure, several sources underscored that the event is not related to an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111223/2012-ipad-roadmap-dont-expect-a-7-incher/">upcoming version of the iPad 3</a>, the next iteration of the popular tablet device that many expect to be available in 2012.</p>
<p>Also unlikely, the rollout of Apple&#8217;s large-scale rethinking of the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111227/supply-chain-chatter-has-two-apple-tvs-targeted-for-midyear-launch/">interactive television initiative</a> that it has been working on. While the company is expected to launch a new Apple TV product later in 2012, such an event would almost certainly be held in the heart of the industry in Hollywood or at least in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>That leaves some kind of advertising or even publishing announcement, which might be the case, since Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue is reportedly involved. </p>
<p>Cue is in charge of a large swath of Apple&#8217;s media units, including the iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, as well as iAd and its iCloud services.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s well known in the ad industry that Apple has been searching for a new head of its mobile advertising unit, since <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110817/apples-mobile-ad-head-andy-miller-departs-for-highand-capital/">Andy Miller</a> left last summer.</p>
<p>But such an appointment has not been made as yet, said sources.</p>
<p>The last time Cue was in New York for an event, by the way, was nearly a year ago, when Apple helped launch News Corp.&#8217;s online magazine, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110202/live-from-the-dailys-debut/">The Daily</a>.</p>
<p>And Apple also recently opened a splashy new retail store in <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110817/apples-mobile-ad-head-andy-miller-departs-for-highand-capital/">Manhattan&#8217;s Grand Central Terminal</a>, and has been refurbishing its flagship glass cube on Fifth Avenue, too.</p>
<p>The holiday-having Apple PR team declined comment, but wished me a &#8220;happy, happy new year.&#8221;</p>

<p>First off: I can reassure all my readers that I will not be coming out with an opus on Yahoo&#8217;s turmoil in 2012. Nor rounding out a trilogy of books on AOL in 2013, for that matter, full of lessons learned and bridges burned.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not true for other players in Silicon Valley, including three sure-to-be prominent books coming out in the next three months.</p>

<p>First off, on Jan. 25, will be the work of Fortune magazine writer Adam Lashinsky, who turned his cover story on the inside workings of Apple into a book called &#8230; &#8220;Inside Apple.&#8221;</p>
<p>The subtitle, &#8220;How America&#8217;s Most Admired &#8212; and Secretive &#8212; Company Really Works,&#8221; promises the &#8220;secret systems, tactics and leadership strategies that allowed Steve Jobs and his company to churn out hit after hit and inspire a cult-like following for its products.&#8221;</p>
<p>Apparently, we&#8217;re all about to find out about concepts like the &#8220;DRI&#8221; &#8212; or assigning a Directly Responsible Individual to every task (which I call DYS, or Do Your Story, here at <strong>AllThingsD</strong>); and the Top 100, &#8220;an annual ritual in which 100 up-and-coming executives are tapped a la Skull &#038; Bones for a secret retreat with company founder Steve Jobs.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sadly, not anymore on that retreat, but I am still looking forward to reading more about the management techniques of the late tech visionary.</p>

<p>On Valentines Day, well-known VC, entrepreneur and Start-Up Whisperer Reid Hoffman&#8217;s book with co-author Ben Casnocha also comes out, touting lessons from Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>Titled &#8220;The Start-up of You: Adapt to the Future, Invest in Yourself, and Transform Your Career,&#8221; it is described as a &#8220;blueprint for thriving in your job and career in today&#8217;s challenging world of work by applying the lessons of Silicon Valley&#8217;s most innovative entrepreneurs.&#8221;</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s hope it&#8217;s not the dudes from Color handing out the advice!</p>
<p>According to the authors, &#8220;the key is to manage your career as if it were a start-up business: a living, breathing, growing start-up of you.&#8221;</p>
<p>If I were a start-up, I would sell virtual doughnuts. Hey Reid, gimme a badillion dollars!</p>

<p>Finally, on March 12, the grumpy investor Peter Thiel teams with entrepreneur Max Levchin and chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov for &#8220;The Blueprint: Reviving Innovation, Rediscovering Risk, and Rescuing the Free Market.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s funny that they, and also Hoffman, are using the hopelessly analog term &#8220;blueprint,&#8221; but I like the retro feel.</p>
<p>No surprise, Thiel&#8217;s posse is unhappy with the pace of innovation, presumably underwhelmed by &#8220;Plants vs. Zombies&#8221; compared to the internal combustion engine.</p>
<p>&#8220;Challenging the notion that we are living in an age of technological progress, three of the world&#8217;s most original thinkers demonstrate that we have become a risk-averse society, hobbled by tort laws and government regulations, short-term financial thinking, and mind-numbing complacency,&#8221; the book&#8217;s description reads. &#8220;Eager to end &#8216;paper entrepreneurialism&#8217; and avoid another financial meltdown, they propose that we expand research and development in breakthrough &#8216;disruptive technologies,&#8217; create millions of jobs through science-based engineering and genuine innovation, shore up our crumbling infrastructure, stop squandering money on misspent &#8216;horizontal education,&#8217; and restore financial discipline.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Phew!</em> And here I was very pleased that I can Instagram filtered pictures of my dinner last night around the world.</p>
<p>In any case, before the zombies arrive to steal them, get your brains ready to think big thoughts.</p>

<p>Remember when <a href="http://postcards.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2011/09/27/facebook_zuckerberg_hunts_bison/">Fortune magazine wrote</a> in September that Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg had reportedly bagged a bison as part of a <a href="http://postcards.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2011/05/26/mark-zuckerbergs-new-challenge-eating-only-what-he-kills/">&#8220;personal challenge&#8221;</a> to eat only what he had killed?</p>
<p>Well, proof of that is hard to miss, now that the ginormous mounted head of said dead bison has been hung on the wall of a Facebook conference room used by the social networking site&#8217;s COO Sheryl Sandberg.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg placed it there recently as a prank, to surprise his top exec with the installation of the very hairy bison when she was away from Facebook&#8217;s Silicon Valley HQ. </p>
<p>And surprised she was when she got back and was faced with the creature, which pretty much takes up the whole room, as you can see above and below. </p>
<p>(And, let me just say on a personal level, like a digital version of the &#8220;Murder She Wrote&#8221; lady, solving the mystery of this geek-on-bison killing is a whole lot more satisfying than getting a pile of internal Yahoo memos.)</p>

<p>The bison has now been nicknamed Billy and also sports a Facebook-branded baseball cap and occasional hoodie &#8212; <em>natch!</em> (My suggestion if you want to use a dead beast metaphor most effectively here would be to clad it all in Google swag.)</p>
<p>While he never confirmed it, Zuckerberg had teased the crowd about the possibility of his hunting prowess at the f8 developers conference this fall in his keynote speech, displaying his Facebook page that had a picture of what he had tagged &#8220;Bison Burgers.&#8221;</p>
<p>In fact, it&#8217;s been quite a lot of bison for the famous entrepreneur since he felled the majestic beast. According to Wikipedia, bison usually weigh 700 to 2,200 pounds, but can be as much as 3,800 pounds. That&#8217;s a lot of burgers!</p>
<p>To get them, Zuckerberg learned the most humane approach and then shot the beast in California, after obtaining a hunting license and, presumably, a <em>very</em> big gun.</p>
<p>Clearly, he was serious when he told Fortune in May that &#8220;the only meat I&#8217;m eating is from animals I&#8217;ve killed myself.&#8221; Among the early victims, which grew in size, were a lobster, a chicken, a pig and a goat.</p>
<p>At this time, the Winklevii are still roaming the plains &#8212; and it would be illegal and just plain mean on Zuckerberg&#8217;s part to frag them any more than he already has.</p>
<p>So, he went for the bison, the next biggest beast in his cross-hairs. </p>
<p>Its head will be moved to Facebook&#8217;s new headquarters today along with the rest of the company, who will now work in spacious new digs. </p>
<p>Which, I am told, could easily fit a herd of elephants &#8212; but let&#8217;s not go there.</p>

<p>A new personalized-reading app for the iPhone is being launched by Flipboard, the design-centric company that led the customized-news charge with its app for iPad. News can be rapidly browsed with a thumb flick from the hand holding the iPhone, like a digital Rolodex. It&#8217;s the kind of thing you&#8217;ll want to show off to friends.</p>
<p>Flipboard&#8217;s iPad rivals aren&#8217;t far behind in the jump to phones, though each take a unique approach in how to a user personalizes content. Zite is an algorithm-generated personalized-magazine app for the iPad that plans to release an iPhone app very soon, perhaps even this week. A phone version is planned for AOL Editions, a personalized news magazine delivered to the iPad once a day. Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand app for iPad will expand next year to additional platforms, including Android tablets and possibly phones, according to a spokesman.</p>

Flipboard for iPhone app</div>
<p>Google has been working on a personalized-reading app that individuals close to the company say will run on Android tablets and phones, the iPad and the iPhone. It will be released this month with the ability to use multiple accounts, offline reading and over 100 partners, according to the individuals.</p>
<p> For the past week, I&#8217;ve been testing a pre-release version of Flipboard for iPhone. I&#8217;ve also revisited Zite, AOL Editions, Yahoo Livestand and Flipboard on the iPad to check out some updated features in these apps. You may like one more than another depending on how much tweaking you want to do to the app&#8217;s settings. Most allow for users to take an active role in helping the app decide what kinds of things they want to read. Others, like Zite and AOL Editions, add an automated method to the process.</p>
<p>Flipboard for iPhone is enhanced by Flipboard Accounts, which was added to the iPad app last month. The feature lets families sharing iPads give each person an account that saves personalized settings and account information—including from Facebook and Twitter. The first time I signed into my Flipboard account on the iPhone made my phone feel a lot more useful. As I waited in line at Starbucks, I flipped through dozens of news bits and images from Flipboard partners like Bon Appetit and ProPublica, Facebook updates from my friends and tweets I follow. The bottom of each screen looked like a page flapping in the breeze—Flipboard&#8217;s playful way of reminding you to page forward for more content. </p>

Zite&#8217;s iPad app</div>
<p>A lot is packed into each Flipboard nibble, though I never felt a screen was too crowded. A tap on each tweet pulled up a cartoon word bubble from which I could opt to mute tweets from someone, re-share content or star it as a favorite. Facebook updates displayed who else &#8220;liked&#8221; a status and let me add comments. A mini version of the red Flipboard ribbon, which opens settings on the iPad app, appears on the iPhone.</p>
<p>The Zite app for iPad curates its magazine content by studying a user&#8217;s reading behavior, though readers also can make manual tweaks. Zite can study who users follow on Twitter to generate a magazine filled with similar content. I&#8217;ve used Zite almost every morning for months without having to make any adjustments.</p>
<p>Starting this week, Zite has its first branded channel: Lululemon Athletica, which offers health articles and fitness tips. Zite also has multiple accounts for those who share an iPad.</p>

AOL Editions</div>
<p>AOL&#8217;s Editions iPad app is a digital magazine that publishes once a day and has a beginning and an end. This means you can read the entire thing each day—a rarity in the online world of continuous updates. But it also means content can feel outdated at the end of the day. AOL Editions takes an algorithmic approach that can be helped manually. It incorporates Facebook and iCal calendars, so the first page shows calendar events and birthdays. As of October, it can now be read in landscape or portrait view.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand feels sluggish, with spinning circles appearing on the screen almost every time I tapped on something. The home screen is clearly focused on Yahoo content, according to the large Featured on Livestand section that takes up most of each screen. Even when I selected content I wanted in my Livestand, it was buried in a book labeled Personal Mix, and then I had to dig through sections within this book. </p>
<p>This month, Yahoo will add Twitter sharing (users can currently share to only Facebook or via email), and early next year Livestand will incorporate personal Twitter and Facebook feeds as topics. A subscription model is planned for certain publications. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/girl-with-dragon-tattoo.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-150294" title="girl with dragon tattoo" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/girl-with-dragon-tattoo-380x249.png" alt="" width="380" height="249" /></a>Last year, David Fincher brought us &#8220;The Social Network&#8221;; now he has &#8220;The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.&#8221;  I&#8217;m excited to see the new one, mostly because it&#8217;s a David Fincher movie, but also because <a href="http://www.newyorker.com/arts/critics/cinema/2011/12/12/111212crci_cinema_denby">New Yorker film critic David Denby</a> calls it &#8220;sensational&#8221; and &#8220;mesmerizing.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s good for Sony, the people who paid the bill for &#8220;Dragon Tattoo,&#8221; right? Nope. Terrible, says Sony.</p>
<p>The studio is livid that the New Yorker is running Denby&#8217;s review today, more than a week ahead of a Dec. 13 embargo. Why does the studio care? If you want a good explanation of modern-day movie marketing and the push-pull between filmmakers and film reviewers, check out this lucid explainer from <a href="http://www.npr.org/blogs/monkeysee/2011/12/05/143134255/honor-among-thumbs-a-dragon-tattoo-spat-and-an-imperfect-system">NPR&#8217;s Linda Holmes</a>.</p>
<p>But for everyone else, this won&#8217;t matter at all. New Yorker readers (and now, drive-by visitors as well, since the review has been placed in front of  the magazine&#8217;s online paywall) will see the review, and a larger group of people will have a vague idea that the New Yorker likes it. That&#8217;s about it.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s the moral for folks like myself in the technology-news-industrial complex, who spend way too much time thinking about, fighting with and cursing embargoes. This stuff can matter a lot (sometimes) to us, but that&#8217;s really only because we decide to agree that it matters. Readers don&#8217;t care at all.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d spend more time explaining this, except that if you care about this at all, you&#8217;ve already read many boring essays about it &#8212; perhaps even today! And I can&#8217;t tell you that I&#8217;m swearing off embargoes, because I can&#8217;t &#8212; I worked with three of them last week, have probably at least one more embargoed story coming this week and, I&#8217;m sure, many more down the road.</p>
<p>But this is a nice reminder that every time I <em>do</em> deal with one of these, it almost always means I&#8217;m not spending time on something geniunely interesting. Like news no one else is writing about, or a fresh take on something everyone else has already written about. Or even seeing a good movie.</p>

<p>Last night, the <a href="http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2011/11/30/yahoo-board-leans-toward-selling-minority-stake/">New York Times</a> dropped a juicy little tidbit into its everything-but-the-kitchen-sink daily update of the board mishegas at Yahoo around the deliberations yesterday over two competing private equity bids to buy a partial stake in the company.</p>
<p>No, not the one about Jeff Jordan &#8212; former eBay exec, OpenTable CEO and now VC at Andreessen Horowitz &#8212; possibly taking a big role at Yahoo if the firm&#8217;s bid with Silver Lake prevailed &#8212; which was mysteriously removed very soon after it posted (&#8217;cuz he will not, so good move, NYT!)</p>
<p>I mean the one about the venture firm&#8217;s big-kahuna partner, Marc Andreessen &#8212; who will indeed take a board seat and play a strong role in Yahoo&#8217;s future if his bid wins &#8212; getting a possible competitor in the Silicon Valley savior section of the ongoing show.</p>
<p>That would be in the form of Reid Hoffman, the well-known entrepreneur, VC and angel investor, who the Times said had talked with TPG Capital, Silver Lake&#8217;s rival in the Yahoo bidding, about becoming a possible partner.</p>
<p>Wrote the Times:</p>
<p>&#8220;TPG has held discussions with Greylock Partners, another venture capital firm, about a possible alignment, two people said. TPG is hoping to draw on the expertise of Reid Hoffman, one of Greylock&#8217;s partners and the founder of the professional social network LinkedIn, these people said.&#8221;</p>

<p>Translation: If Silver Lake has a tech icon of substance on its team to give uber-geek appeal to its offer &#8212; <em><a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dagnabbit">dagnabbit</a></em> &#8212; then TPG was going to raise with another one, whom the very same Times reporter who wrote last night&#8217;s article <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/06/business/reid-hoffman-of-linkedin-has-become-the-go-to-guy-of-tech.html?pagewanted=all">recently nicknamed &#8220;The Start-Up Whisperer&#8221;</a> in a recent glowing profile of Hoffman.</p>
<p>While I am still trying to grok what a start-up whisperer exactly means (and how someone as self-effacing as Hoffman would react to such a twee moniker without snickering), it&#8217;s a move that has likely already irritated Silver Lake.</p>
<p>After all, TPG aiming at nabbing Hoffman is akin to two crazy neighbors trying to one-up each other in holiday-lighting lawn decor. (You have a singing Santa, so <em>I&#8217;ll</em> have a singing Santa &#8212; and I might even add a Lady Gaga-themed crèche for good measure!)</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s not a bad instinct, either, to get your own live-action Silicon Valley legend, even if it is only half true in Hoffman&#8217;s case.</p>
<p>Because, according to sources who know such things, while Hoffman and TPG have had conversations, there have been no commitments, and nothing is close to being agreed on to link the pair.</p>
<p>That could certainly change, and quickly, but Hoffman or Greylock aren&#8217;t currently in TPG&#8217;s proposal to Yahoo.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s in contrast to Andreessen, who is all in (I am not even going to bother with &#8220;sources said&#8221; here, since everyone and my mother has seen the proposal) with Silver Lake on the deal to purchase 19.9 percent of Yahoo for about $16.50 a share. </p>

<p>As I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111130/yahoo-bidders-come-in-at-16-50-to-17-50-with-plan-to-keep-jerry-yang-staying-on-board/">reported earlier this week</a>, for Silver Lake&#8217;s money and expertise in fixing broken things, the bid includes: Silver Lake getting three board seats; cash going to a buyback of stock or granting of a dividend to shareholders; the ability to select a CEO; approval of its strategic plan for Yahoo, and its solution to come to terms with Yahoo&#8217;s unhappy Asian partners; and all the purple wearables you could ever hope for (perhaps Yahoo&#8217;s best asset, IMHO, especially worn by such obviously cool dudes, as seen here).</p>
<p>Also, controversial Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang gets to stay around on the board (but only if he becomes very, very quiet, so as not to rile the activist shareholders).</p>
<p>TPG&#8217;s bid is less formed, although its price is slightly higher. And the PE firm has yet to check the &#8220;Big Geek Included&#8221; box. </p>
<p>Hence, the floating of Hoffman as a contender to take on Andreessen, who was once dubbed the &#8220;Golden Geek&#8221; by Time magazine.</p>
<p>I hope TPG does, soon, since what a matchup it would be!</p>
<p>But, for now at least, the pair &#8212; who share big investments in a range of Web companies, most especially Facebook (Andreessen is on the board of the social networking giant, and Hoffman was an early investor and adviser) &#8212; are at peace.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Publishers' hopes for the iPad and e-readers have come back to earth. But the people who actually download these things like them quite a bit, according to a new survey.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/wired-ipad-app.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/wired-ipad-app-213x285.png" alt="" title="wired ipad app" width="213" height="285" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-146024" /></a>After an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100526/wireds-flash-free-app-makes-on-to-the-ipad-after-all/">initial wave of excitement about iPad magazines</a>, some publishers have dialed back their enthusiasm. But the readers who have actually downloaded them like them quite a bit.</p>
<p>So says a survey commissioned by a publishers&#8217; trade group: It finds that two-thirds of people who read magazines on tablets and e-readers think they&#8217;ll be spending more time with digital issues over the next year. Many of them &#8212; 46 percent &#8212; are consuming more magazines &#8212; both in print and digital form &#8212; than they did before they got their hands on an iPad.* And 63 percent of them want more digital stuff to read.</p>
<p>Overall, the survey has generally sunny news for the magazine business, though it&#8217;s fair to wonder if the <a href="http://www.magazine.org/">Association of Magazine Media</a> would release a survey that had glum news.</p>
<p>The report does offer some guidance for the industry: 89 percent of readers want publishers to adopt a uniform way of navigating magazines, and 69 percent like watching in-app videos that run less than minute.</p>
<p>The other point worth noting about the report is that it exists, period. The survey, conducted earlier this month, was completed by 1,009 people &#8220;pre-screened for their ownership of mobile devices and their use of magazine-branded apps.&#8221; Up until now, pollsters couldn&#8217;t have been able to find enough respondents to make that kind of poll possible, says Chris Kevorkian, the trade group&#8217;s executive vice president for digital: &#8220;We&#8217;ve been wanting to do this research for some time, but didn&#8217;t have the critical mass to query.&#8221;</p>
<p>*The survey isn&#8217;t explicitly about iPad magazine editions &#8212; in theory, it covers all tablet magazine apps, as well as magazines consumed on e-readers like the Kindle and the Nook. But the majority of these things are being read on Apple&#8217;s device.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/michael-bloom/0/343/348">Michael Bloom</a> joined the publisher, which owns Rolling Stone, Us Weekly, and Men’s Journal, in <a href="http://adage.com/article/mediaworks/wenner-media-names-chief-digital-officer/227635/">May</a>. On Friday afternoon, he sent out a memo announcing his departure. Here&#8217;s the bulk of the note:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>As some of you already know, I&#8217;m moving on from Wenner Media. While it&#8217;s been a relatively short time, I&#8217;ve really enjoyed working with so many talented and creative people across Wenner&#8217;s incredible brands.</p>
<p>Over the past six months, a new digital leadership team has been put in place, and a lot of great work has been done to set the foundation of what will be a terrific digital future. I&#8217;m proud of what you guys have accomplished and I know that you will go on to do great things in 2012. I&#8217;ll certainly be rooting for you from the sidelines.</p></blockquote>
<p>Unlike many of his competitors, Wenner Media owner Jann Wenner has never rushed to embrace digital publishing. For a long time, he did very little with the Web beyond handing over his flagship RollingStone.com site to RealNetworks.</p>
<p>That <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090831/rolling-stones-web-failure-wasnt-so-shabby-after-all-but-now-what/">deal made him money</a>, but it also allowed upstarts like Pitchfork to grab lots of territory and mindshare over the years. Last year, Wenner got control of the site again and moved to put most of it behind a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100419/rolling-stones-new-song-money/">pay wall</a>.</p>
<p>Around the same time, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110530/why-rolling-stones-cover-wont-be-on-an-ipad-anytime-soon/">Wenner declared himself unimpressed with the commercial upside of the iPad</a> for magazine publishers, a position that put him at odds with the conventional wisdom. Since then, many of his peers have become much more sympathetic to his take.</p>
<p>Bloom, who had previously put in time at Sharecare, MTV, and AOL Time Warner, didn&#8217;t mention a new job in his note; Wenner Media hasn&#8217;t announced a replacement. I&#8217;ve asked Bloom and a Wenner rep for comment.</p>

<p>Time Warner&#8217;s publishing unit told its employees this afternoon that five magazines &#8212; Time, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, People and Real Simple &#8212; would be available on the Kindle Fire tomorrow.</p>
<p>The announcement comes after negotiations that dragged on for weeks and continued through Tuesday morning &#8212; a process that baffled most of Time Inc.&#8217;s peers, who signed on to the new device in time for its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110928/live-from-new-york-meet-the-amazons-kindle-fire/?refcat=media">September unveiling</a>.</p>
<p>Supposedly, the major stumbling block for Time Inc. was that Amazon has retained the ability to set the retail price for the magazines it sells, which means it could theoretically slash prices or give away the magazines for free. That scenario would be a major bummer for all the publishers who have been diligently trying to convince subscribers and newsstand buyers that they&#8217;ve been underpaying for their reading material.</p>
<p>But Amazon has told Time&#8217;s competitors, like <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110926/most-but-not-all-big-magazine-publishers-sign-on-for-amazons-tablet/">Condé Nast, Hearst and Meredith</a>, that it doesn&#8217;t intend to beat down prices, and that assurance was apparently enough for them. Jeff Bewkes&#8217; company apparently needed more convincing.</p>
<p>This never seemed to be an issue, by the way, with Barnes &#038; Noble and its new <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111107/here-comes-the-new-nook-cloud-sold-separately/">Nook tablet</a>; Time Inc. was a part of that gadget&#8217;s launch announcement.</p>
<p>Like the titles that Time Inc. sells via the iPad and other Android tablets, access to the Kindle Fire editions will come via bundled deals, where consumers pay a single price and get both paper and digital copies of their magazines.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the memo that consumer marketing head <a href="http://www.timeinc.com/aboutus/executives/sachs.php">Steve Sachs</a> sent out at the end of the day:</p>

<p>I’m pleased to share the news that Time Inc. has just reached a deal with Amazon that will allow subscribers to our magazines to enjoy their subscriptions on the new Kindle Fire. Starting tomorrow, subscribers of FORTUNE, PEOPLE, Real Simple, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED and TIME will be able to access digital editions of these magazines on the Kindle Fire at no additional cost. Other Time Inc. titles will follow shortly.</p>
<p>To date, hundreds of thousands of Time Inc. print subscribers have authenticated to receive their digital editions, with thousands more being added each week. Our agreement with Amazon continues to expand our All Access strategy, adding the Kindle Fire to the growing list of platforms where consumers can enjoy our content, including Apple’s iPad, the Barnes &amp; Noble NOOK Color and NOOK Tablet, the Android Marketplace and Next Issue’s store.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a terrific interview that longtime &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; correspondent Morley Safer did with the 92-year-old Andy Rooney just a month ago, when Rooney was retiring from the classic CBS television news magazine.</p>
<p>Rooney, who died this past weekend, did the well-known final segment on &#8220;60 Minutes,&#8221; playing up his grump to Olympic levels. In the video below, he obviously remained in fine curmudgeonly form until the end.</p>
<p>While Rooney could sometimes irk, the body of his work was legendary &#8212; and, if you really think about it, he was a kind of verbal blogger long before there ever was an Internet.</p>
<p>Which he grumped about, too.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-140850" title="Trend_winter_boots" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/Trend_winter_boots-380x277.png" alt="" width="380" height="277" />Zappos expects to launch its first attempt at recreating the catalog experience on the iPad in early December, just in time for the holidays.</p>
<p>The app was developed by the Zappos office located in San Francisco, where a dozen or so employees are working on building new shopping experiences.</p>
<p>Zappos, which is owned by Amazon.com, is headquartered in Las Vegas.</p>
<p>The new app joins the regular <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110128/zappos-meddles-in-mobile-as-opportunities-increase-for-apps/">Zappos iPad app</a>, which features most, if not all, of the products found on the company&#8217;s Web site.</p>
<p>Instead of being generally available in iTunes, the Zappos app will be found on Apple&#8217;s Newsstand, which organizes magazine and newspaper subscriptions for those who use iOS 5. It will be free; a new edition will appear monthly.</p>
<p>Articles will highlight things like fun and funky boots for winter or trends in color. All of the items will be for sale, making it more catalog than magazine.</p>
<p>Will Young, a director in Zappos&#8217; San Francisco office, said the catalog will highlight about 100 items a month, featuring shoes, clothes and handbags. &#8220;Most people still think of Zappos as shoes,&#8221; Young said. &#8220;The main goal isn&#8217;t sales. It&#8217;s about educating.&#8221;</p>
<p>The app was unveiled to all Zappos employees at an all-hands meeting yesterday.</p>

<p>In March of 2010 , the New York Times used the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/imagepages/2010/03/14/business/14brawl_1.html">ju-jitsu theme</a> to depict the fight between Google and Apple over smartphones. As you can see below, the late Apple CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs faces off with an iPad and iPhone against then-CEO (and now Executive Chairman) Eric Schmidt, who is armed with an Android device.</p>
<p>Jobs gets to do the cool, in-the-air kick.</p>

<p>Leaving aside the fact that neither ever wears suits to do anything, let alone karate, it&#8217;s almost exactly the same, as you can see below.</p>
<p>Personally, I would have used Nerf guns at dawn.</p>

<p>I am here at Yahoo HQ in Sunnyvale, Calif., to check out &#8220;Product Runway,&#8221; which is the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s attempt to show that it can still innovate. </p>
<p>First and foremost is the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111028/news-reader-traffic-jam-yahoos-livestand-and-googles-propeller-set-to-launch-aiming-at-flipboard/">launch of Livestand</a>, a personalized news reader that is similar to Flipboard and a variety of other rivals, including &#8212; soon &#8212; Google.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s Yahoo&#8217;s attempt to present a business-as-usual feel &#8212; amidst a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111031/yahoo-shares-melt-as-rumors-conflict-with-other-rumors/">long and agonizing and very public strategic overview</a> that might also include the sale of the company (or <em>not</em>!), in the wake of the recent firing of its last CEO, Carol Bartz.</p>
<p>It has caused a lot of trauma inside Yahoo, which can&#8217;t help with innovation.</p>
<p>But we press on!</p>
<p>In other words, despite the three-ring circus going on outside, Yahoo wants you to know it is still hard at work.</p>
<p>We begin:</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am</strong>: As the strains of U2 die out, Yahoo Chief Product Officer Blake Irving takes the stage, which is actually set up in the company&#8217;s cafeteria. I can smell lunch being made nearby and I am hungry.</p>
<p>Apt &#8212; Yahoo certainly needs to show off a lot of cool stuff or its fate will be cooked.</p>
<p><em>No pressure, Blake!</em></p>
<p>&#8220;Personally, I am more bullish on Yahoo today,&#8221; he said. &#8220;What is Yahoo? Simple. It&#8217;s the premier digital media company. Period. Stop.&#8221;</p>

<p>Oh, if it were only <em>that</em> easy.</p>
<p><strong>10:46 am</strong>: Irving pulls out his favorite slide, which looks like a chemistry test. It lists the various elements of the product strategy, with things like personalization, mobile, premium.</p>
<p>Now to Livestand, which is available on the Apple iTunes app store right <em>now</em>.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t all rush at once!</p>
<p>Irving notes that Livestand is more than just an app &#8212; it is a platform.</p>
<p>In other words, Yahoo wants to help publishers publish online. Kind of a Facebook of content. </p>
<p>If Yahoo can pull it off, that is. (And, of course, unless Facebook decides to do the same.)</p>
<p><strong>10:50 am</strong>: Livestand is an HTML5 &#8220;personalized living magazine.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;This is the way Web pages are going to look,&#8221; declares Irving. Which is to say, heavy on photos, swoopy navigation, a television screen-like interface.</p>
<p>Irving uses the example of Surfer magazine, which is a good idea since waves always look pretty. Especially in a video-in-frame with Kelly Slater in Hawaii.</p>
<p>But, in essence, for anyone who has used Flipboard for years now, none of this is entirely different.</p>
<p><strong>10:54 am</strong>: The look of what would be the Yahoo News page is actually much more interesting, since it is clearly a whole lot better than the Web page. </p>

<p>Irving also shows off a &#8220;living ad&#8221; &#8212; in this case, an unusually snuggly couple on a couch. It is cool, but creepy.</p>
<p>When launched, the ad has tap points. Irving &#8212; naughtily declaring about what is an ad, &#8220;I&#8217;ll tap that&#8221; &#8212; taps the lady&#8217;s butt, which would also have been my move. We learn about the jeans, of course.</p>
<p><strong>10:58 am</strong>: Irving then shows off the ability to add feeds. </p>
<p>Next, something called &#8220;Cocktails.&#8221; First up, a developer tool called Yahoo Mojito and Yahoo Manhattan, which is a hosting service. The company will open-source both the technologies in 2012.</p>
<p>Irving brings up Mike Kerns, VP of Personalization &#038; Social, who came to Yahoo when it bought the innovative sports fan site called Citizen Sports. </p>
<p>&#8220;We like to ship <em>sh#t</em>,&#8221; he notes. I like Mike Kerns immediately.</p>
<p>Kerns intros C.O.R.E. No, it is not a secret government organization that takes out fussy bloggers, who might be more critical than Yahoo execs would like.</p>

<p><strong>11:11 am</strong>: Kerns is moving on to social, especially its integration with Facebook. While much touted, sources tell me it has gone slower than expected in terms of use, but that it is improving.</p>
<p>Kerns talks about the idea of matching content to conversations to interests and, well, you know &#8212; the now exhausting world of modern media consumption.</p>

<p><strong>11:18 am</strong>: Now <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110330/yahoo-hires-tim-parsey-as-head-ux-designer/">Tim Parsey</a>, who is Yahoo&#8217;s design head. He is hands down the most delightful exec the company has had in a while, mostly because he loves to smirk adorkably.</p>
<p>He shows off Yahoo&#8217;s first original design, which was a dull list. And then another really bad logo. But Parsey loves it! It&#8217;s <em>kitschy</em>!</p>
<p>Smirk attack!</p>
<p>Parsey moves into what has to happen now, which is to deliver a much more emotional experience and a much better designed one. He uses words like &#8220;humanism.&#8221;</p>
<p>Say what? He is right &#8212; Yahoo has for too long completely ignored design as an important part of the experience.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why Flipboard was so quickly touted &#8212; it was pretty and fun. And it is why everyone is simply <em>forced</em> to love Apple products.</p>
<p><strong>11:22 am</strong>: Parsey even has a code for it, called REM &#8212; for rational, emotional and meaningful.</p>
<p>He shows off a weather app. People take photos and they can be used in the app. Then Yahoo Mail for the iPad, whic is also handsome with photos and video. Livestand, also pretty.</p>
<p>&#8220;Great way to differentiate,&#8221; says Parsey. He calls it &#8220;one Yahoo!&#8221; Indeed.</p>

<p>Back to IntoNow, it&#8217;s the television indexing service that Yahoo <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110425/yahoo-buys-tv-programming-index-intonow/">bought in April</a>. </p>
<p>Essentially, more ways to watch the media &#8212; in this case, video &#8212; and do 53 other things at the very same time. Memo to humanity: We will all be paying continuous partial attention for the rest of eternity.</p>

<p><strong>11:41 am</strong>: Product dude Irving is back, making a point that, despite all the public mishegas, Yahoo has been busy at innovating. </p>
<p>A redo of email, better search, social &#8220;Facebar&#8221; with Facebook, Flickr for Google Android.</p>
<p>Irving is correct &#8212; Yahoo&#8217;s engineers have been hard at work and deserve kudos for doing so, even with attrition issues, stock declines and questions about the company&#8217;s very future being debated daily.</p>
<p>The problem is that too many of these improvements are mostly incremental and essentially table stakes for tech companies, most of whom have introed many more significant innovations in the same time frame as Yahoo has.</p>
<p>Google did Android, Google+ (as well as some notable failures). Microsoft did Kinect, Windows Phone, Windows 8. Amazon did Kindle Fire. Facebook did a range of major updates, as it has grown like a weed.</p>
<p>And there&#8217;s Apple. You might have heard of the iPhone and the iPad.</p>
<p>You get my point. Yahoo&#8217;s Product Runway today is well done, but what it really needs to be is just the beginning of a take-off.</p>

<p>The first question is what took so long to get Livestand out, the second is why should people use Livestand since Flipboard and others have already been around for a dog&#8217;s age.</p>

<p>Parsey delivers on the delicious scale, noting that Yahoo must have one design experience and yet has a lot of different interfaces. In other words, it cannot be Apple, but it can feel a lot more cohesive.</p>
<p>Irving talks a little bit around the obvious elephant in the room &#8212; the future of Yahoo &#8212; noting that the product staff was trying to focus and forget the storm going on outside.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have dreams about what this company can be,&#8221; says Irving.</p>
<p>You and me both, brother.</p>

<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-139411" title="Refinery29-Reserve-screenshot" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/Refinery29-Reserve-screenshot-325x285.png" alt="" width="325" height="285" />In October, the online fashion magazine attracted 4.3 million visitors, generating 40 million page views; it has 600,000 subscribers signed up for local editions in five cities nationwide.</p>
<p>To date, though, it has mostly monetized the company through advertising.</p>
<p>Co-founder Philippe von Borries said that 80 percent of the revenue this year will come from ads, and 20 percent from commerce. Next year, he hopes the ratio is closer to 40 percent from commerce.</p>
<p>&#8220;Content drives incredible engagement, and now that we have built such a sizable audience of women who tune in every day through email, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram &#8212; we are building exciting new opportunities to shop our content,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Today, the company is relaunching its e-commerce component, called <a href="http://reserve.refinery29.com/">Reserve</a>. The site, which is separate from the editorial, will offer only a few items a day, and could be connected to the content that appears in the magazine; it is currently offering a selection of boots and handbags.</p>
<p>To support the launch, the company raised $4.5 million in funding this summer in a first round from Floodgate and First Round Capital.</p>
<p>Von Borries said the New York-based company is hiring aggressively to add to its current 49 employees, and that its revenues are on an annual run rate of $15 million. Last year, its revenues totaled $2 million.</p>

<p>Memo to Flipboard, as well as Pulse, CNN&#8217;s Zite and AOL&#8217;s Editions: You might want to make some room in the already-crowded news and social reader space, because you&#8217;re about to get some bigfoot company.</p>
<p>Next Wednesday, according to sources close to the situation, Yahoo will finally officially unveil its offering, called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110210/yahoos-got-a-digital-newstand/">Livestand</a>.</p>
<p>And perhaps as early as next week or in the weeks soon after, Google will also weigh in with its version of the genre &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110915/its-called-google-propeller-and-its-aimed-at-flipboard-and-facebook-too/">code-named Propeller</a> &#8212; which also might be the product&#8217;s name. Another moniker under strong consideration: Currents.</p>
<p>As I have previously reported, Google Propeller is an HTML5 reader for the Apple iPad and Android &#8212; essentially a souped-up version of similar apps such as Flipboard, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">AOL&#8217;s Editions</a>, Zite (which was just <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110830/zite-sold-to-cnn-for-just-over-20-million/">bought by Time Warner&#8217;s CNN</a>) and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110616/pulse-gets-quicker-with-9m-in-funding/">Pulse</a>. </p>
<p>All these apps are part of the drastically changing habits of media consumers, helping users better navigate numerous social and media feeds &#8212; such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as news sites and more &#8212; using handsome interfaces and touch technologies on tablet devices.</p>
<p>Flipboard, the most prominent and elegant of these offerings, is now available only on the Apple iPad. </p>
<p>Flipboard&#8217;s traction among elite users, along with its high-level design ethos and strong reviews, is why Google tried to buy the well-funded company last year, sources said.</p>
<p>But Flipboard &#8212; which is backed by some of tech&#8217;s biggest venture players, who have invested <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">more than $60 million at a $200 million valuation</a> &#8212; declined the kind offer.</p>
<p>At the time, sources said, Google told Flipboard execs that if it did not buy the start-up, it planned to do a version of its own.</p>
<p>Hence, after I heard about the product earlier this year, I dubbed it the <em>Flipinator</em>.</p>

<p>According to sources, Propeller will launch with a plethora of media partners, as well as integration into the Google+ social network. The aim of the search giant is to offer media companies easy tools for publishing content on these devices, as well as a better path to monetization.</p>
<p>That is essentially the same plan at Yahoo, which has been working on Livestand with hopes of it being a product that will woo publishers into tight collaboration with the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.yadvertisingblog.com/blog/2011/02/16/video-demo-livestand-from-yahoo/">Livestand was announced</a> by Yahoo&#8217;s now-fired CEO Carol Bartz in February, at a speech at the World Mobile Congress in Spain.</p>
<p>At the time, Bartz demoed a magazinelike platform that would allow publishers to put up content easily and give users the ability to personalize their selections based on search history and interests.</p>
<p>Bartz called it &#8220;content in context.&#8221; (You can see the demo video below.)</p>
<p>But while Bartz promised the product within three months, development has been slowed by its complex technologies, bugs and the need to sign on publishers. </p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving is pushing the product hard as a way for the company to reinvigorate its media products.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear how many publishers Yahoo will have at launch, and neither are the distribution plans, beyond flacking it from the Web site and being present in app stores.</p>
<p>Google, on the other hand, has its Android platform to push out Propeller, although it all must work as well on Apple&#8217;s iPad, which is the dominant tablet on the market.</p>
<p>But just because both Yahoo and Google are big companies is by no means a guarantee of success &#8212; think Yahoo 360 or Google Wave or Buzz &#8212; and their lateness might be a hindrance.</p>
<p>And, in fact, other news reader apps are much further along. The leader, Flipboard, has already had four million downloads and 50 partnerships with leading publishers.</p>
<p>It also has started to introduce rich advertising products and, perhaps most importantly, has tight social integration with Twitter and Facebook.</p>
<p>There will be social elements on both Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand and Google&#8217;s Propeller. But news reading will be stressed more, making them more like Pulse, a tiny but highly innovative start-up.</p>
<p>Each of the existing apps will presumably compete by adding on more features. Pulse recently added <a href="http://blog.pulse.me/your-news-everywhere-sync-sources-to-your-pul-0">cross-platform, cross-device syncing</a>, while Flipboard is close to unveiling <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110421/pre-200-million-valuation-flipboards-mike-mccue-at-sxsw-the-full-onstage-video/">an iPhone version</a> it has said it was working on.</p>
<p>Yahoo and Google PR declined comment.</p>

<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090210/newly-re-minted-microsoft-exec-scott-moore-speaks/">Scott Moore</a>, who runs the U.S. arm of Microsoft&#8217;s MSN portal, will depart the company, according to sources.</p>
<p>The well-known content exec is reportedly headed to another job, sources said.</p>
<p>Moore has worked at Microsoft twice in this career &#8212; first as publisher of its Slate online magazine. He <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090130/exclusive-former-yahoo-scott-moore-heads-back-to-microsoft-as/">came back to the software giant</a> in early 2009, after a stint at Yahoo running its media operations.</p>
<p>At MSN, he was U.S. executive producer, responsible for leading the content and programming strategy for the service. Some of his most prominent initiatives were several innovative sites with Hollywood producers <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20091208/exclusive-msn-inks-another-deal-with-wonderwall-creator-bermanbraun-for-online-lifestyle-site/">BermanBraun</a>, as well as a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-msn-preps-for-major-renovation-focusing-on-five-areas-as-it-does-less-better/">rehaul of MSN</a> in 2009.</p>
<p>What Microsoft does next with its portal business is a big question, of course, as it has aimed all its firepower &#8212; and gigantic piles of money &#8212; at its Bing search service. Thus, MSN, while one of the more highly trafficked sites on the Web, has often taken a back seat.</p>

<p>That poor little bird.</p>
<p>The famous Twitter bird, I mean, which is getting yet another drubbing on another magazine cover.</p>
<p>When last we checked in with the tweetie icon, he (his name is, apparently, Larry) was on a crutch and all bandaged up on the front of Fortune under the inevitable title: &#8220;Trouble@Twitter.&#8221;</p>
<p>Inside, there was also an illustration of the bird with a rocket strapped to his back going the wrong way.</p>
<p>Is this bird Wile E. Coyote or what?</p>

<p>Now, New York magazine has the bird as an obese beached whale with the cover line: &#8220;twitter #toobigtosucceed?&#8221;</p>
<p>I wonder when, if and when the start-up starts to score big results, there will be a Twitter bird with really big muscles.</p>
<p>Or more likely, because Larry is getting unfairly abused, if all does not go well for the San Francisco company, a Twitter bird with X&#8217;s for eyes.</p>
<p>I am calling fowl.</p>

<p>Today, Fortune magazine released its annual <a href="http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/most-powerful-women/2011/">&#8220;50 Most Powerful Women in Business&#8221;</a> and, as usual, it had its share of tech execs on the list.</p>
<p>And off it, too &#8212; first and foremost being ousted Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, who was jacked completely from her 2010 No. 10 rank. She was No. 8 in 2009.</p>
<p>In her place: Newly designated Hewlett-Packard CEO and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman grabbed the No. 9 spot. </p>
<p>Also on the list: fast-rising IBM sales, marketing and strategy exec Ginni Rometty at No. 7; Xerox CEO Ursula Burns at No. 8; Oracle President and CFO Safra Catz at No. 11; Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg at No. 12; Google execs Susan Wojcicki and Marissa Mayer at No. 28 and No. 38, respectively; IBM North America GM Bridget Van Kralingen at No. 39; and Best Buy Americas President Shari Ballard.</p>
<p>Catz was the highest paid of the group, with $42.1 million in total 2010 compensation.</p>
<p>And also taken off this year: 2010 No. 14, HP&#8217;s Ann Livermore, who left her top job there, but still is on the tech giant&#8217;s board; 2010 No. 28 Cathie Lesjak, CFO of HP; 2010 No. 44 Lorrie Norrington, a former president at eBay; and Apple&#8217;s communications head Katie Cotton (she was <em>robbed</em>!), who was No. 50 in 2010.</p>
<p>The new list will be in the magazine on Monday, which is when a related conference will take place in Southern California. (I will also be in attendance there, along with other less powerful ladies.)</p>
<p>Whitman is <a href="http://www.fortuneconferences.com/mpws/program.html">scheduled to speak at the conference</a> in the afternoon on Tuesday, October 4.</p>
