The CEO drops in on his company's annual developer conference.

Talk about a total head fake.

After writing a post on Tuesday about being diagnosed with a rare voice condition which has barred him from making many public appearances over the past two years, Google CEO and co-founder Larry Page made a surprise appearance at Google’s I/O developer conference on Wednesday.

The CEO, who has not appeared at the I/O conference in years, took about 10 minutes to deliver a sort of evangelist-like mission statement, thoughts on how he sees Google’s role in the world at large, and how the different parts of his organization — Android, Google X, Maps, Search — help people.

“Technology should do the hard work,” Page said, “so that people can get on with doing the things that make them happiest in life.”

Page’s appearance is noteworthy in that, unlike other technology CEOs — Zuckerberg, Cook, Bezos — Page has not often stepped into the limelight for new product introductions or company updates, aside from his appearances on the company’s earnings calls.

But unlike his quarterly appearances filled with balance-sheet numbers and chats with Wall Street analysts, Page’s talk today aimed to appeal to a more emotional part of his audience, even evoking a memory of a time he went to a technology conference with his father, when Page was a child.

At other moments, Page seemed to wax philosophical. “If I think back to a long time ago, all of humanity was basically farming or hunting all the time,” he said. “If you lived in that time, you probably hoped that you could feed your family. For us, we don’t worry about that … and the reason for that is technology.”

Indeed, a lot of the speech had a very “Kumbaya” feeling to it, with Page calling for an end to the animosity that inhabits much of the tech industry.

“Every story I read about Google is ‘us vs some other company’ or some stupid thing, and I just don’t find that very interesting,” Page said. “We should be building great things that don’t exist. Being negative isn’t how we make progress.”

Yet in the very same address, Page took some potshots at competitors like Microsoft and Oracle, both of which are involved in litigation over certain Google products.

When asked during a Q&A session about the fate of Android in light of Oracle’s court victories, Page seemed eager to snipe: “Money is more important to them than cooperation,” Page said.

Speaking of a lack of cooperation, just today The Verge surfaced a cease-and-desist letter from Google to Microsoft, demanding that Microsoft remove the YouTube app from its Windows Phone devices, citing a lack of in-app advertising. Funny timing.

Page is hardly the only Google executive — much less Google employee — to shoot down competitors. Google Maps VP Brian McClendon was eager to make a subtle dig at Apple’s less-than-lauded mapping product. And Google+ SVP and long-time I/O emcee Vic Gundotra has thrown quite a few competitive elbows at other tech companies in his time.

Regardless, the Street seemed to eat it up. Shares of Google reached an all-time high on Wednesday afternoon, hitting $916.38 per share, before edging back slightly to close at $915.89.

Google jabs at Apple, touting the accuracy of its own Maps app at Google I/O today.

It wasn’t that long ago that iPhone users were cheering about the release of Google Maps for iOS.

Now Google is readying its next update to the Maps mobile app, which will be rolled out for both Android and iOS devices sometime this summer. The app will be optimized for iPad and Android tablets, as well.

Shown off today at Google I/O by Brian McClendon, Google’s vice president of Maps, the upcoming app seems to take small slices from both Foursquare Explore and Waze, improving local venue search as well as live rerouting recommendations during navigation.

McClendon showed how a smart search from Maps for “Burmese food” or “pizza” in San Francisco will turn up a bunch of local results that include friends’ ratings — the way Foursquare does — but also utilize Zagat data to show places worthy of a Zagat badge. This is all part of Google Maps’ new “unified five-point rating scale.” Huh. Well in either case, there’s a seemingly cool swipe feature for swiftly browsing through search results in Maps rather than reading them in list format.

And Google’s Offers service was tied into the mix by showing venues with deals or discounts in results. The first of these offers will come from Starbucks, but as Google incorporates Offers more into mobile, we can likely expect to see deals from other businesses.

I/O attendees also got a sneak peek at the app’s “dynamic rerouting” feature, meant to give better, faster, real-time navigation updates. (Waze might want to look up from its acquisition talks long enough to take note of this one.)

Early in the presentation, Google took a jab at Apple’s map mishaps, with McClendon saying that Google Maps in iPhone has been a “success” due to the fact that the app is “sleek, simple, beautiful, and let’s not forget, accurate.”

Could Apple swoop in to top Facebook's bid for Waze? It's certainly possible. But is it likely?

When rumors circulated earlier this year that Apple was mulling a bid to acquire social navigation app outfit Waze, the company quickly and aggressively quashed them. Within 24 hours of the rumors hitting the news cycle, a handful of “sources close to the situation” stories popped up debunking them — including one from the outlet that published the original report.

Now with Facebook in advanced discussions to buy Waze for a reportedly heady price tag, Apple’s rumored interest in the company is once again the subject of discussion. While January reports of an actual on-the-table deal may well have been “fabricated,” sources tell AllThingsD that the two companies have held talks in the past.

But sources in both the Apple and Waze camps seem to have very different perspectives about the tone and content of those talks, and just how serious they may or may not have been.

Now, as Facebook steps up its courtship dance to the billion-dollar level, could Apple step in and play the spoiler?

It’s certainly possible. Apple’s iOS Maps fiasco last year gave the company a very good reason to seek out deals for alternative sources of mapping data.

But here’s the question: If Apple — with its unmatched war chest and Maps PR nightmare to go through — was seriously interested in acquiring Waze, why didn’t it do so then, when it was very much on the spot to improve its map client?

A few reasons:

First and perhaps foremost, a significant portion of Waze’s data set is collected through the company’s Google Android client. If Apple were to acquire Waze, it would need an elegant answer to the Android question. And right now there isn’t one. Kill the Android client, lose a lot of data and user goodwill. Maintain the Android client, support an app for your chief rival in the mobile space.

Second, even if Apple did buy Waze outright, the integration challenges are daunting. Apple is already sucking a lot of mapping data into its Maps back end. At the time it launched, iOS Maps was using data from more than two dozen sources. Adding yet another — particularly a crowdsourced one like Waze — would require some serious engineering work, and perhaps some vetting of Waze data for accuracy and completeness.

Third, an acquisition of Waze would require a rethinking and likely overhaul of Apple’s current maps strategy, and the licensing deals on which it has been built.

Finally, Waze’s asking price is very high. Sources familiar with the matter said that Waze CEO Noam Bardin has had no problem walking away from offers he’s considered “lowball” in the past. But now that Facebook has shown willingness to shell out something in the range of $1 billion, the money is serious enough for Bardin. While Apple doesn’t have a history of overpaying, Facebook — with its mobile and local ambitions — may be willing to go over the top.

In other words, anything’s possible. But in this case, it’s not entirely logical.

Apple declined comment on its relationship with Waze and any talks the two companies may have had. Waze declined comment, as well.

Here is a video of Bardin talking about Waze at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference in April:

Of course the CEO of a mobile mapping company is going to say maps are super important. But Waze CEO Noam Bardin has an interesting way of putting it.

“What search is for the Web, maps are for mobile,” Bardin said at our D: Dive Into Mobile conference last week.

The latitude and longitude of a location, he argued, are the equivalent of the URL for a Web page.

Doing maps well is quite hard, as demonstrated by Apple’s troubled iOS mapping app launch last year. People really, really don’t like it when their maps are wrong — and rightly so.

Bardin argued that crowdsourcing is the cheapest and most effective way to keep maps up to date, as well as provide real-time navigation. Waze’s 44 million users, who both actively and passively contribute to its maps, are its biggest weapon versus market leader Google and its infinite wallet.

Bardin also mapped out an interesting theory of “meta operating systems” for mobile phones. Where Apple and Samsung want to build fully integrated platforms, other players like Google, Facebook and Waze are building apps that reach across all sorts of different phones.

But then, where Google is building nearly every sort of app, and Facebook is increasingly extending its tentacles with Facebook Home, Waze is still just a mapping app.

So, what about those acquisition rumors? Is Waze preparing itself to be a strategic asset of some larger company? You’ll want to watch the video to see Bardin’s answer, where he’s unusually willing to not rule out a sale.

Also in the interview, Bardin discussed advertising on Waze, relations with Google and Apple, and recent legal threats to using phones in cars:

A quick catch-up guide to the first day of our global mobile conference.

D: Dive Into Mobile — Global Edition kicked off Monday with an afternoon of interviews that touched on everything from driving directions to the future of mobile operating systems. Here’s a handful of highlights:

“Firefox OS? What the f**k?” asked AllThingsD’s Walt Mossberg, kicking off the day’s first interview. Mozilla CEO Gary Kovacs said it’s all about the open Web standards that underlie the forthcoming Firefox operating system.

Google may not have 44 million robotic cars on the road, but Waze has 44 million users, Waze CEO Noam Bardin said, and they make Waze’s maps better by using them. Bardin touted the power of crowdsourced driving directions, which so far have “validated” about 1.5 billion km (or about 932 million miles).

Google’s Jason Spero, appearing with Millennial Media’s Mollie Spillman, said that mobile ads will have more potential once they can track user behavior for advertisers’ sake. However, Spillman added, “It’s becoming more mainstream and mandatory that mobile is part of the marketing budget or media spend.”

Xiaomi sold 7.19 million handsets in 2012, and expects to sell double that number this year. The high-end smartphone company is one of China’s fastest-growing. “We believe the future of the mobile Internet is really about services,” said company president Bin Lin.

Lady Gaga’s manager Troy Carter simultaneously balanced Gaga’s plans for a hybrid album-app with the fact that physical CD sales are still incredibly important in the music business: “You can’t shock the water in our business. It’s about gradual change,” he said. “You still have to cater to the market that’s out there.”

No hands-on use of cellphones means what it says, according to a state appeals court.

It’s well known that it’s not okay to text while driving, and presumably the same should apply to tweeting, checking email or most other cellphone interactions.

But what about checking driving directions or looking at a map? After all, lots of cars have built-in navigation systems, and plenty of those are touch-controlled.

It’s still not allowed, at least not in the Golden State, according to a California appeals court. The court ruled that hands-on use of a cellphone is against state law — even to check one’s maps.

“Because it is undisputed that appellant used his wireless telephone while holding it in his hand as he drove his vehicle, his conduct violated Vehicle Code section 23123, subdivision (a),” the court wrote in a late March ruling.

Wrote the exec: "Could I really take the helm of Yahoo when I was 28 weeks pregnant?" She could and did.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer just posted a “lean-in” story on the new site launched by Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg in conjunction with her recent book, “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead.”

Sandberg and her team have been encouraging women to post their personal stories of when they leaned into their careers and Mayer certainly does that in her post, including discussing taking the job at the top of the troubled Silicon Valley Internet company when she was seven months pregnant.

She wrote:

Looking back to reflect on the question: Could I really take the helm of Yahoo when I was 28 weeks pregnant? Even now, it sounds absolutely crazy. I considered if and how I could make it work: learning more about the role, getting words of encouragement from close friends and family, and developing a plan. I’ve always believed you can never have everything that you want, but with work and dedication, you can have the things that really matter to you. If I took the opportunity, it was clear that I would have to find a way to have time with my baby without a long maternity leave. I also knew going forward that there wouldn’t be much time beyond my job and my family for anything else. Ultimately, I decided I was fine with that, because my family and my job are what really matter to me.

In the piece, Mayer also noted that she jumped at the chance to run Yahoo, which had actually put Google in business in many ways with an early search deal. She started her career at the search giant and was one of its higher-ranking execs.

“The alignment with my experience and career was uncanny: search, email, homepage, news, finance, maps, social, mobile and more,” she wrote, although she also said that after “13 years of really hard work at Google, I had been envisioning a glorious six-month maternity leave.”

Not so. Mayer took off from Yahoo only a few weeks after she had her baby son last fall, and she said it has turned out well for her. “I’ve come to realize that being a mother makes me a better executive, because motherhood forces prioritization,” she wrote. “Being a mom gives you so much more clarity on what is important.”

Whether you're training for a race or jogging for exercise, these apps will inject a little fun into your running routine.

Last week, I put my iTunes on steroids, recruited a horde of virtual zombies to chase me, and found six different ways to run through Central Park.

Welcome to the new world of running apps. While smartphone-toting runners have long used apps like Nike+ and RunKeeper, which track your runs using GPS and offer training plans, three different apps have recently helped me get out of a running rut.

The first app is a new one called Cruise Control, which adjusts the tempo of the songs in your iTunes library to help you speed up the pace. The second app I’ve been using is called Zombies, Run! It intermittently puts the sounds of snarling zombies into your ear to make you run faster. And lastly, there’s WalkJogRun, which helps you find creative running routes in your local neighborhood, shared by other users.

All of these apps are relatively pricey, ranging from $3 to $5 each. And the only one currently available on both iPhone and Android is Zombies, Run! The other two are iPhone-only. And, since they all use your smartphone’s built-in GPS, they all are geared toward running outdoors, especially WalkJogRun.

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=C038C9D7-B095-4E4E-8DE3-833E14C0F742&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

But despite being forced out into the cold, I’ve enjoyed using these apps and can recommend them if you’re looking to shake up your routine. My top pick of the three was Cruise Control, probably because I rely a lot on music to keep me motivated while running.

Cruise Control costs $4.99, and works sort of the same way cruise control in your car works: If you’re going too slow, Cruise Control will adjust the tempo of your music to help you speed up; if you’re running too fast, the app tries to slow you down.

It does this using an algorithm that speeds up your music without altering the pitch, so that a sped-up song doesn’t sound like the Chipmunks and a dragged-out song doesn’t make the artist sound sleepy or drunk.

There are four modes in Cruise Control: Free Run, Pace, Heart Rate and Cadence. Free Run mode detects and keeps track of your cadence. Pace mode allows you to set a target pace — let’s say sub-nine-minute miles — and creates a playlist that will get you there, adjusting the tempo of songs along the way. The Cadence mode acts as a kind of metronome, prescribing you a cadence to try to maintain.

The Heart Rate mode requires an iPhone-compatible heart-rate monitor to work properly. I didn’t have a heart-rate monitor for testing Heart Rate mode, so I mostly used Free Run and Pace modes.

For me, Cruise Control worked: When my music tracks suddenly sped up, I found myself running faster to keep pace. It was like having a personal deejay in my ear (minus, you know, the whole club atmosphere). If I didn’t like a song, I could tap a thumbs-down sign at the bottom of the app to quickly remove it from my Cruise Control playlist.

But Cruise Control does have one pretty big drawback: The app only plays songs that are between 70 and 90, or 140 and 180 beats per minute, and only about a hundred songs out of 700 in my iTunes library met those requirements. The creator of Cruise Control told me that, for most users, only 10 to 20 percent of their song libraries will be played through Cruise Control.

Next was Zombies, Run!. There are a couple versions of this app, but the one I downloaded is the more expensive version, listed for $3.99 in iTunes. The app is also available on Android.

Zombies, Run! is fun. It made me feel as though I was the last woman standing in a bad zombie flick — “The Running Dead”? — although I was in Central Park, not a post-apocalyptic suburb of London, and the “zombies” 20 meters ahead of me were mostly other humans in cold-weather running gear.

The app’s story kicks off by dropping you from a helicopter into a town called Abel Township. The communications operator is a man named Sam with a thick British accent, who often sounds alarmed. Sam guides you through the different “missions” of the app, introducing new characters and warning you of zombies up ahead. All of this is taking place in your ears, without any crazy graphics or animation happening in the app, so you can keep your eyes on the road.

Missions can last 30 minutes or one hour. The app basically “gamifies” the act of running — along the way, you collect virtual supplies, like batteries, mobile phones and even sports bras, which allow you to grow your base in the township.

You might think running to non-stop helicopter drones and zombie growls would get old after a while. Fortunately, Zombies, Run! thought of that, and the app patches in music from your smartphone’s music library. So, after the helicopter “dropped me off” during the first mission, a Beastie Boys song from my workout playlist came on, like a commercial break.

After using the app a few times, I had only made my way partially through two of 23 missions. But I would keep using Zombies, Run! to add some adventure to my routine. Runners looking for less adventure and more of a training guide might want to try the 5K version of Zombies, Run!, which costs $1.99.

The last app I tried is called WalkJogRun. This iPhone-only app costs $4.99.

Using the smartphone’s GPS, WalkJogRun finds new routes in your vicinity, pulling from its crowd-sourced database of over 1.5 million routes. The routes are categorized by length, so, if I was aiming for a three-mile run, I would select from that group. (Some runs in my neighborhood exceeded 45 miles. I didn’t attempt those.)

Other runners can also leave notes and tips on their shared routes, indicating if a path by the Hudson River is particularly windy, or if a route is a good alternative to the one the New York City marathon runners use.

WalkJogRun helped me discover a new route in my neighborhood that had me sightseeing (and dodging crowds) along Broadway. It also brought me back to another route I haven’t run in years.

However, WalkJogRun is pretty similar to another mapping app called Map My Run, which is free. And I didn’t have enough time to rate this app’s long-term training plans to see how they compared to the plans offered in the RunKeeper app I’ve used on and off for awhile. Lastly, you can’t control your iTunes music through WalkJogRun.

If music is a must-have while you run, Cruise Control might be worth a download. Zombies, Run! is good for those who need to inject a little fun into those long runs. These apps aren’t cheap, but for a few bucks, one of them might just light a fire under your feet.

Update: A previous version of this article said Cruise Control costs $5.49. The app costs $4.99.

The information for the North Korea map was added by people who are interested in the country under a Google development program called Map Maker, a collaborative effort that has become known as crowdsourcing.

Great Web services are as critical to Apple's success as great hardware.

Apple does hardware and software well, and it’s at the top of its game when it does them together. But when it comes to Web services, the company is a laggard, with an ever-lengthening conga line of missteps.

There are hands-down fiascos: MobileMe, Ping and Maps. And there are works in progress: Game Center, iTunes Match and iCloud. And all of them speak to a troubling deficiency that Apple just can’t seem to overcome. One that’s garnering increasingly more public scrutiny. One that, at its worst — say with the disastrous Maps debacle — shows up the company that prides itself on building the “magical and revolutionary” as fallible.

So, as the 2013 Apple rumor mill ramps up, and the prognosticators wonder whether the company’s product pipeline includes a television, a watch, or both, consider this: While Apple could likely use another disruptive innovation on which to build its continued success, what it really needs — crucially — is to do Web services well.

Because to do them poorly is to weaken the hardware and software on which Apple prides itself. These days, our experiences of Web services are part and parcel of our experience of the devices on which they run. When Maps for iOS fails, the iPhone fails with it. Certainly that was the view taken by investors, who whacked $30 billion from Apple’s market cap in the days following the Maps fiasco.

As Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes recently observed, “The Maps debacle showed investors how valuable Google’s technology was — how hard it was to replicate — and how Apple may struggle as the world moves beyond iTunes toward cloud-based services.”

In other words, it showcased Apple’s deficiency in such a way that it actually shook investors’ confidence in the company. It showed them that great Web services are as critical to Apple’s success as great hardware.

Apple, of course, already knows this. That’s why it undertook audacious initiatives like Maps and iTunes Match in the first place. But the company clearly underestimated the effort and skill needed to pull them off with excellence. And now, with all the world watching, it can’t afford to do so again. Maps, iTunes Match, iCloud … they all must “just work.” That’s what consumers expect. And that’s what Apple has promised.

In that sense, Web services are likely to be Apple’s next big battleground. Premium hardware and software aren’t enough anymore. The market wants services, as well. And it wants services that work.

Walt answers a reader's question on whether certain programs running on Windows 8 machines will require using only the touchscreen.

Q:

I’ll be buying several new Windows 8 PCs this year, all with touchscreens. Touchscreens are new to me. When using spreadsheet and word processor programs, does the touchscreen completely replace the mouse?

A:

If you are thinking about Microsoft Office programs, I’d say no. While the forthcoming 2013 version of Office is designed to allow the use of touch instead of the mouse and keyboard, I have found in my tests that the icons and text are too small for that to work comfortably, at least on a desktop or laptop, and I still prefer the mouse and keyboard. In fact, this is a key reason Microsoft itself makes keyboard covers for its Surface tablet.

Q:

Does the new Google Maps app for Apple devices work on the iPod touch? Can I download maps in advance on my touch for use offline?

A:

Though Google says the app is “optimized” for the iPhone 5, it also says it will work on the third, fourth and fifth generation iPod touch, as well as on the iPad and on older iPhones. Note, however, that turn-by-turn navigation likely won’t work because Google says that requires GPS, which the touch lacks.

Well, that didn’t take long.

Google Maps is now the top free app on the iOS charts, according to AppAnnie.

It’s not a huge shocker, given that yesterday’s arrival of the app (first confirmed by AllThingsD) had everyone on Twitter all atwitter.

The move comes as Apple continues to struggle to get out from under the bad publicity engendered by going with its own maps as opposed to Google’s for the latest version of iOS, the software that powers the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Perhaps as important as the app itself, Google has also released a software development kit allowing other app makers to build Google Maps into their programs.

Now that Apple SVP Eddy Cue has had some time to assess the debacle that was the iOS 6 Maps launch, he’s taking decisive steps to make sure it never happens again. He has fired Rich Williamson, the guy who oversaw the development of Apple’s mobile mapping software, which launched with enough flaws to prompt a public apology from CEO Tim Cook.

Williamson, who has been with Apple for more than a decade — most recently as senior director of iOS platform services — was cut loose right before the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S., a person with direct knowledge of the matter tells AllThingsD. It’s not yet clear if Apple has found a replacement for him.

Williamson’s sacking follows the high-profile ouster of former iOS software chief Scott Forstall, who was pushed out of the company over the troubled Maps rollout, among other things.

News of Williamson’s departure from Apple was first reported by Bloomberg.

Apple declined comment.

The head-to-head battle between Apple Inc. and Google Inc. in mobile maps is drawing nearer.

Google has distributed a test version of its new mapping app that will work on Apple’s iPhones and iPads to some individuals outside the company, said a person with direct knowledge of the matter. Google has been putting the finishing touches on the app before submitting it for approval to the Apple iTunes store, this person said, though it is unclear exactly when that will happen.

Due out in October, now coming "before the end of November."

Apple surprised lots of people yesterday. Here’s a smaller bit of unexpected news: The company is delaying the update of its iTunes software.

Back in September, Apple said an iTunes overhaul would be out in October. Now it’s pushing that back a month.

Here’s spokesman Tom Neumayr’s take: “The new iTunes is taking longer than expected and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right. We look forward to releasing this new version of iTunes with its dramatically simpler and cleaner interface and seamless integration with iCloud before the end of November.”

The obvious question is whether the delay is related to the company’s management changes, including the ouster of top executive Scott Forstall. Neumayr declined to answer that one. But it’s worth pointing out that Forstall wasn’t in charge of iTunes — it falls under media boss Eddy Cue.

On the other hand, Apple’s last major software refresh led to a public apology from Tim Cook. So it’s reasonable to guess that Apple would take extra care to get this one into shape.

Here’s what the new software is supposed to include:

Better layout

Improved performance

Easier playlist creation

Full-library search

Improved iCloud integration

A completely redesigned mini-player

A full-window interface on your Mac or PC, a new library view and an expandable album view

No word on whether the software will require less storage and computing power on Apple’s devices, which has been a longtime user complaint.

Apple executive Scott Forstall was asked to leave the company after he refused to sign his name to a letter apologizing for shortcomings in Apple’s new mapping service, according to people familiar with the matter.

Apple officially released its new mobile mapping software in September. Users quickly complained about data inaccuracies and other bugs. Mr. Forstall argued that the company could address the outcry without apologizing as Apple had done when it shipped iPhones with faulty antennas a few years ago, one of these people said. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook and others disagreed, these people said. Mr. Cook signed his name to the apology instead.

Answering the question, "Did Forstall jump, or was he pushed?" will have to wait out the storm. (But we think pushed.)

Some news cannot wait, of course, and sources at Apple said the company had planned to release news of the sudden exit of Scott Forstall, one of its major execs, this afternoon.

Maybe so, but it’s also unusual timing. Due to Hurricane Sandy — which was poised to hit landfall in central New Jersey just as Apple made its announcement about the iOS mobile software chief’s leaving, along with that of Apple Store retail head John Browett — Wall Street reaction to what appears to be a major management move by CEO Tim Cook will not take place until at least Wednesday.

That’s because the massive storm has led to the closure of the stock markets today and tomorrow, leaving investors to mull on the major reorganization without a lot of ability to react.

Apple shares closed at $604 on Friday, up about 49 percent over the past year. Its stock had declined slightly recently, after last week’s quarterly earnings did not meet the enormous profit expectations of Wall Street. Still, Apple had — for anyone else — a blockbuster fourth quarter.

The tech leader reported $8.67 per share of profit on sales of $35.97 billion.

How the departure of Forstall and, to a much lesser extent, Browett (who has been a largely unpopular exec since he was hired a year ago), will be greeted by shareholders when markets open should be interesting.

On one hand, Forstall has been a major exec at the company for a very long time, in charge of key areas of success for Apple, including the software for its hugely popular iPhone and iPad. Forstall has even been called CEO-in-waiting in some media accounts.

That said, many sources report that he has wrangled with other top execs, including Cook, and he has been known as someone with a doesn’t-play-well-with-others personality. One source told me today that Forstall had made numerous “open challenges” to the Apple leader over the last year.

While that’s not necessarily a negative at Apple — the late CEO and co-founder Steve Jobs was also someone who did not suffer fools or even simple mistakes among trusted staff — the recent troubles as it replaced Google’s mapping software with its own had clearly tarnished Forstall’s image.

In addition, while Apple does great at hardware, as well hardware/software integration, it has often fallen down in other key software efforts, such as MobileMe, iTunes and more.

This is not all Forstall’s fault, of course, but his sudden departure — which will take place officially next year — means that Cook is consolidating control over the top management.

Thus, the did-he-jump-or-was-he-pushed meme will doubtlessly increase over the next few days. Pushed seems to be the consensus so far.

But here’s a little insight into Apple’s often opaque culture to better discern management Kremlinology there: iTunes is still advertising competitors’ maps instead of its own failed product, and Forstall got no stage time at Apple iPad mini event last week.

Clearly, the removal of Browett, who had made a series of moves that were negatively greeted by Apple’s retail unit, will make Cook look decisive, especially since he had hired him. But whether that extends to how the influential Forstall was dispatched — and it looks like he was — will be another story to grok for Wall Street.

Apparently, there are storms in the West, too.

Big management shifts at Apple are now taking place.

Scott Forstall, the man in charge of its iOS mobile software efforts and a major and longtime executive at the tech giant, is leaving next year and will remain an adviser to CEO Tim Cook until then.

In addition, new retail head John Browett is headed out the door.

As part of the move, Apple noted that four key execs — Jony Ive, Bob Mansfield, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi — would “add responsibilities to their roles.”

Ive gets “Human Interface”; Cue will take over Maps and Siri voice recognition responsibilities; Mansfield will run a new unit called Technologies, “which combines all of Apple’s wireless teams across the company in one organization”; and Federighi gets the big job of iOS and OS X.

More to come on what happened, but Forstall’s departure is very big news and a drastic move for such an important player in the tech space.

He had big fans and also many detractors for his sharp-edged personality, as well as what some described as exhibiting “growing open challenges” to Cook himself. Forstall had previously been called “CEO-in-waiting” in one media account in Fortune.

In addition, numerous sources noted persistent tension between Forstall and several other key execs, especially the powerful design chief Ive.

Veiled internal politics at Apple aside, Forstall has been a key part of Apple’s success over the last decade, especially in the development iPad and the iPhone.

Recently, there has been some level of ire at Apple over the troubled rollout of its own mapping software and the replacement of Google’s popular service, which was Forstall’s responsibility. (No, this move does not mean everyone gets Google mapping back, as one person asked me.)

Browett’s leaving is a little less of a surprise. Since he got the job, he has alienated many within the highly successful retail organization at Apple, many sources said.

His departure comes less than one year after the former Dixons CEO was hired by Apple to succeed Ron Johnson, who left for J.C. Penney in November 2011. Recently he’s been criticized by some Apple Store employees for unfriendly policy changes aimed at increasing Apple’s retail profit margins.

More to come, obvi, but here is the official press release from Apple, which it put out with the most understated title of all time:

Apple Announces Changes to Increase Collaboration Across Hardware, Software & Services

Jony Ive, Bob Mansfield, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi Add Responsibilities to Their Roles

CUPERTINO, California — October 29, 2012 — Apple® today announced executive management changes that will encourage even more collaboration between the Company’s world-class hardware, software and services teams. As part of these changes, Jony Ive, Bob Mansfield, Eddy Cue and Craig Federighi will add more responsibilities to their roles. Apple also announced that Scott Forstall will be leaving Apple next year and will serve as an advisor to CEO Tim Cook in the interim.

“We are in one of the most prolific periods of innovation and new products in Apple’s history,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The amazing products that we’ve introduced in September and October, iPhone 5, iOS 6, iPad mini, iPad, iMac, MacBook Pro, iPod touch, iPod nano and many of our applications, could only have been created at Apple and are the direct result of our relentless focus on tightly integrating world-class hardware, software and services.”

Jony Ive will provide leadership and direction for Human Interface (HI) across the company in addition to his role as the leader of Industrial Design. His incredible design aesthetic has been the driving force behind the look and feel of Apple’s products for more than a decade.

Eddy Cue will take on the additional responsibility of Siri® and Maps, placing all of our online services in one group. This organization has overseen major successes such as the iTunes Store®, the App Store℠, the iBookstore℠ and iCloud®. This group has an excellent track record of building and strengthening Apple’s online services to meet and exceed the high expectations of our customers.

Craig Federighi will lead both iOS and OS X®. Apple has the most advanced mobile and desktop operating systems, and this move brings together the OS teams to make it even easier to deliver the best technology and user experience innovations to both platforms.

Bob Mansfield will lead a new group, Technologies, which combines all of Apple’s wireless teams across the company in one organization, fostering innovation in this area at an even higher level. This organization will also include the semiconductor teams, who have ambitious plans for the future.

Additionally, John Browett is leaving Apple. A search for a new head of Retail is underway and in the interim, the Retail team will report directly to Tim Cook. Apple’s Retail organization has an incredibly strong network of leaders at the store and regional level who will continue the excellent work that has been done over the past decade to revolutionize retailing with unique, innovative services for customers.

Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices with iPad.

Apple has been taking heat for its replacement of Google Maps on the iPhone with a flawed maps app of its own. This flub has been a gift to Google, which has improved its already-solid maps app.

Apple has been taking lots of justified heat for its decision to replace Google Maps on the iPhone with a fledgling, and flawed, maps app of its own. In my otherwise favorable review of the new iPhone 5, I called Apple’s maps app “the biggest drawback” on the device and “a step backward from the familiar Google app.”

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=9EEE579D-9D17-4F4F-8054-3F0287F253BB&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

This flub by its archrival has been a gift to Google, which has taken the opportunity to publicize some recent, quietly announced improvements to its already-solid maps app that runs on phones using Google’s Android operating system, the iPhone’s biggest competitors. These include the ability to sync mobile map searches with those made on a computer, the ability to save maps for offline use, and routing for bicyclists.

So this week, I decided to dig into Android’s maps.

My verdict is that Google Maps on Android is a rich, versatile, mature, mostly reliable app that is getting better and better. It has its flaws — including some inaccuracies I encountered. However, with Apple’s switch, Google’s superior mapping app gives Android phones a clear advantage over the iPhone in this important function.

Google Maps includes interior maps of some major stores, such as Macy’s in New York.

Before getting into the details, let me hasten to add that despite this advantage, Google has said it wants its maps on the iPhone and iPad, too, because they are a platform too big to ignore for the company’s services and ads. Google has pointed out that iPhone users can still get a limited version of Google Maps via the phone’s Web browser.

In fact, Google plans to announce on Thursday that it is adding its popular Street View feature, missing from Apple’s maps, to the Web version of Google Maps accessed from the iPhone and iPad. I tested this addition, which displays 360-degree photographic street views of selected locations, and interior photographic views of certain businesses, using sample links Google sent me. These links worked well, allowing me to see the locations and pan around with a finger.

Also, I believe Google is working on a new Google Maps app for the Apple platform, one that would be offered as an optional download.

But the focus of this column is on Google Maps on Android, which I’ve used many times in the past but never examined this closely. For my tests, I used several Android devices, including a Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone, a Google Nexus 7 tablet and, most often, a new Android phone, the $100 Droid Razr M from Motorola, the cellphone company now owned by Google.

I looked up dozens of addresses and searched for dozens of businesses and noncommercial points of interest, locally, across the U.S., and in other countries. I used the Android maps app to navigate on several car trips, ranging from a 10-minute jaunt to a 70-mile, 90-minute trip from the Washington, D.C., suburbs to Gettysburg, Pa. (I was a passenger on this trip, not a distracted driver). And I tried out the newest features.

I found the Android version of Google Maps to be not only better than Apple Maps, but also better than the iPhone version of Google Maps that Apple dropped. The biggest advantage over the former iPhone version, and the straw that apparently broke the camel’s back for Apple, was that the Android version of Google Maps, but not the old iPhone version, has long included free, voice-prompting, automatic turn-by-turn navigation. Apple added that ability to its Maps app.

In general, Google Maps on Android offers richer maps, with more streets and points of interest noted, than Apple’s. Though I found Apple’s navigation screens more striking and easier to read at a glance, the Android navigation screens showed more surrounding streets and thus more context, which was very useful, especially on my less familiar trip to Gettysburg.

In Google Maps on Android, the buildings of a residential quad at Brandeis University were all properly labeled.

And Google labels individual buildings within many large complexes, so you can find your way around. One example: I looked up a residential quad at Brandeis University in Google Maps, and found that, on Android, the buildings were all properly labeled. The same search on Apple Maps found the university and the quad, but gave no clue as to which building was which.

Google Maps on Android includes interior maps of some major stores, museums, malls and airports.

For example, it shows the location of individual departments inside Macy’s flagship New York store, even letting you move between floors to view each level’s locations. On Apple Maps, the huge store appears as a gray blob or a 3-D exterior picture.

However, Google’s navigation directions weren’t always more accurate. In a short test drive between my house and a local hotel (during which I listened to the phones but didn’t look at the screens), the Android phone tried to start me off on a circuitous route through my neighborhood. Worse, both Google and Apple advised me to take an illegal left turn into the hotel.

I wasn’t surprised Apple did this, given its recent public admission that its maps need work and don’t meet its own standards. But Google’s error shocked me, since it has been working at this for seven years and built its own maps and data for the U.S.

When told about my experience, Google admitted its maps aren’t perfect and said it is in the process of fixing this error.

A search of Brandeis University in Apple Maps gave no clue to which building was which.

Also, Google Maps on Android can be confusing to use, at least at first. Satellite view and traffic information are contained in a menu called “layers,” a term most people wouldn’t recognize. Google concedes its user interface needs some work.

But overall, Google Maps on Android was a trustworthy and friendly partner. I loved the fact I could sync searches between my computer and Android phone. I looked up the Kremlin in a browser on a Mac, and seconds later it showed up as a recent search suggestion on the Android phone.

I found offline maps less useful. I could save an area of the map on the Android phone. But once I turned off the phone’s connectivity, I found that while I could browse through this saved map, I couldn’t search or navigate within it.

So if Google Maps on Android are so much better, should you buy an Android phone?

There are many other factors to consider and the iPhone still has plenty of pluses. But if mapping is very important to you, Android is the way to go.
