Levine is the third partner to join AH in recent months. In January it named HP and Opsware veteran Mark Cranney as a partner for market development. And in March it added IronPort’s Scott Weiss.

“Adding Peter makes us smarter at the firm on a certain class of products where he is much more experienced and goes much more in depth than we do, in areas like virtualization and storage,” AH co-founder Ben Horowitz told me. A key area of expertise is one that Levine developed specifically at Veritas, he said, that of working with manufacturers of infrastructure products. “Veritas was probably the most successful company in the history of enterprise software at the OEM model except for Microsoft,” Horowitz said. “It’s a very complicated thing to do–and a very complicated thing to do correctly–so he brings a specialized skill set to the table.”

Horowitz also said Levine will help AH expand its reach and find deals in places where it hasn’t had a presence before, places like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where Levine is a lecturer. One example: Bromium, a stealth startup that AH says it is investing in. While Horowitz didn’t disclose the amount the firm is investing, he did describe Bromium as a “security plus virtualization company.”

“It’s the kind of deal we wouldn’t have known about without working with Peter,” Horowitz told me.

“We’re at the second generation of what you can do with virtualization,” Levine told me. “Companies like Citrix and XenSource did a lot of the hard rock-breaking to get chipset support from companies like Intel to support virtualization, and once they did that there was an opportunity to take virtualization to the next level. Bromium is a company that takes advantage of all that.”

Levine is continuing in his role as a vice president of Strategic Development at Citrix and will continue teaching a class on Technology Sales at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. Previously, he was senior vice president and general manager of the Data Center and Cloud Division at Citrix, having joined that company in 2007 by way of its $500 million acquisition of XenSource, a provider of open-source virtualization sofware, where he was CEO. XenSource’s customers included Microsoft, Symantec, HP, NEC and Dell.

This will be Levine’s second go in the venture capital ring. He spent three years as a general partner at the Mayfield Fund and in that capacity served on the board of Consera Software, which was purchased by HP. He sat on the advisory board of VMWare and was an investor in Actona, which was ultimately acquired by Cisco Systems.

Levine first rose to prominence as an early employee of Veritas Software, and during his 11-year stint there helped to grow it to 5,000+ and more than $1.5B in annual revenue. His last job at Veritas was executive VP, where he was responsible for worldwide marketing, OEM sales, business development and several product divisions. Before that, he was a software engineer at MIT and worked on Project Athena, an early-1980s research project to build a campus-wide distributed computing network that turned out to be a forerunner of the kind of corporate networks we now use every day.

Facebook’s new data center in Prineville, Oregon, is full of Fusion-io technology, and the one planned for Rutherford County, North Carolina will be as well. Fusion-io CEO David Flynn told me in an interview some time ago that servers running Fusion-io technology constitute about 80 percent of the hardware footprint inside the Facebook building. If you ever wondered what kind of secret sauce Facebook might have in its data center infrastructure, make no mistake: Fusion-io’s flash memory-based technology is it.

The close links between Facebook and Fusion-io have a lot to do with a mutual relationship. Venture capitalist Marc Andreesen sits on Facebook’s board and is an investor in Fusion-io. Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are leading the offering with JP Morgan and Credit Suisse. The filing doesn’t say how much the company expects to raise in the offering.

Along with Facebook, Fusion-io’s hardware partners Hewlett-Packard, and IBM also account for more than 10 percent of revenue.

This filing is a surprise, because as recently as December, Flynn told me the company was in no hurry to go public. It had just raised a $45 million C-round from Meritech Capital Partners, with Accel Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, New Enterprise Associates, and Triangle Peak Partners also invested. Plus it has strategic investments from Samsung, the South Korean electronics and semiconductor giant–which also happens to be the world’s biggest supplier of the flash memory chips key to Fusion-io’s technology–and Dell Ventures.

But from the looks of the numbers, it appears the company needs to raise the kind of cash that an IPO can provide. The company finished 2010 with $36 million in revenue and a $31.5 million net loss despite a gross margin of 59 percent in the latest quarter. Operating expenses were nearly $52 million, led by $24 million in sales and marketing expenses. The balance sheet shows $3.5 million in cash and cash equivalents plus another $39 million in working capital. That’s not enough to fund operating expenses assuming they remain at the same level, which they won’t, given how fast the company is ramping up.

And ramping up it is. Fusion-io just last week announced a relationship with its fourth major server manufacturer, the white-box manufacturer Supermicro, and on the same day, IBM doubled the number of servers that include Fusion-io as an option. Before that, it scored a rare public disclosure from Credit Suisse that its technology was being used to speed up trading, and there are certainly more financial companies buying the technology and simply not talking about it.

Alas, the Foursquare conference, hosted by the Quadrangle PE fund, is an invitation-only affair. And the event, which kicks off tomorrow, is closed to the press except for reporters onstage to interview the stars. And those conversations don’t get released to the public.

That’s a particular bummer this time. Because the Quadrangle guys–who have had a rough year–had the foresight to get a lineup that includes GE (GE) CEO Jeff Immelt, who appears to be in the final stages of selling NBC Universal to Comcast (CMCSA) CEO Brian Roberts, who will also be onstage. Sure would be nice to hear what they say.

Another panel that piques my interest, if only because of the title: “Are Popularity and Profitability Correlated?” It features Twitter’s Stone, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman and YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley. And would-be moguls are represented by a start-up pitch panel that includes Dennis Crowley of Foursquare, the superbuzzy mobile service whose name has nothing to do with Quadrangle’s conference.
