Martha Stewart shares her list of tech gripes in a video interview with AllThingsD’s Ina Fried.

Martha Stewart loves technology. She got her first computer in 1982 and has a variety of phones and tablets, including two BlackBerrys — so she can talk on one and look stuff up on the other.

But Stewart also has some pet peeves with how technology is being used. She bemoans the fact she was at dinner recently and four of her six friends were on their phones. Worse, she said, was the family at the next table celebrating a mom’s birthday with the kids having their heads buried in a digital device, not speaking at all.

“That’s not the most attractive scene for a mother’s birthday,” Stewart said in a video interview following her talk at this week’s D: Dive Into Media.

In the interview, Stewart talks about her love of tech, and what she does and doesn’t like about the BlackBerry phones she is never without.

“They are struggling and I can tell why,” she said. “The touchscreen on the new BlackBerry is hideous, and the phone is not good. I have to change back to the old one, unless I go straight to (an) iPhone, which I am tempted to do.”

She also has some complaints about her favorite new toy, the iPad, including the fact that it isn’t faster.

"We are relentless in serving our customers where they need us, where they want us," Stewart said, speaking at D: Dive Into Media on Tuesday.

Martha Stewart said her company is transitioning to a digital media company just as fast as it can.

“We are relentless in serving our customers where they need us, where they want us,” Stewart said, appearing alongside Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia CEO Lisa Gersh at the D: Dive Into Media conference.

Stewart noted that Martha Stewart Living was an early mover into the apps world, and now both it and Everyday Food are digital, with Martha Stewart Weddings and Whole Living adding digital editions this spring.

“I’m very proud of our efforts in that arena,” Stewart said.

Her company, though older than Facebook and Twitter, is still fairly young at 20 years.

“We’re not old-fashioned,” Stewart said. She rejected the idea put forward by Bob Pittman earlier in the day that consumer habits change slowly, noting how quickly the iPad took off.

Stewart, a longtime D: All Things Digital attendee, was an early adopter of computers, getting her first IBM in 1982.

On the TV side, the company has a deal with Hallmark that ends at the end of the year and is evaluating what to do next, whether it is cable or broadcast.

“We’re looking at a number of different formats,” Stewart said.

In addition to traditional formats, Stewart said technologies like bar codes and tablets and phones create even deeper needs for the kinds of how-to content her company produces.

Some things have gone away, such as its “Martha By Mail” catalog business, though the company now has a new online store.

11:34 am: Gersh said that the company is trying to find new ways to make its monthly food magazine more relevant.

“We know our reader is making dinner every night and they want to hear from us,” Gersh said.

The magazine has a daily email newsletter that will be upgraded with video so subscribers can see someone making the recipe.

11:37 am: On the future of her doing a daily TV show:

It’s been a wonderful vehicle for a lot of things, Stewart said. There are a lot of products we have focused on in the show.

“Would you want to sit in make-up and hair for another 10 years?” Stewart said.

Walt: Me? No.

Stewart talked about a lot of other things she is doing, including her new relationship with J.C. Penney and its CEO, former Apple Store head Ron Johnson.

Our first-ever media conference kicks off in a litte more than a month. And we've added the heads of Hulu, Twitter and Martha Stewart Living to a star-studded cast.

The D: Dive into Media conference in January is already packed with big-name speakers. But we’ve found room for a few more: We’re adding the leaders of Hulu, Twitter and Martha Stewart Living to our star-studded lineup.

If you’re reading this site, you know who all of these folks are. But just for formality’s sake:

Jason Kilar is CEO of Hulu, the video joint venture co-owned by Comcast, Disney and News Corp.’s broadcast TV units. The site has been a huge hit with viewers and subscribers, who have put it on pace to generate $500 million in revenue this year. But its owners aren’t quite sure what to do with it: They put it up for sale this summer, then decided to hang on to it after all. This will be Kilar’s first major public appearance since that tumult, so we’ll have plenty of questions.

Dick Costolo is CEO of Twitter, which has moved from Web oddity to a service used by more than 100 million people a month. Twitter’s founders didn’t like the notion of turning their baby into a media company, but that’s exactly what Costolo is trying to do now; he is ramping up efforts to attract more eyeballs and sell more ads. And he’s leaning heavily on big media companies — especially TV networks and movie distributors — to make that happen.

Martha Stewart is the founder of Martha Stewart Living, the multimedia empire she built from scratch, which now includes magazines, TV shows, a Web site and multiple lines of branded goods; her newest coup is a big-dollar deal with J.C. Penney. She’ll be joined onstage by Lisa Gersh, the president and chief operating officer Stewart brought in from NBC Universal nearly a year ago. At NBC U, Gersh had overseen the acquisition of the Weather Channel, among other duties; she had previously been chief operating officer at Oxygen Media.

They’ll join a lineup that includes ESPN President John Skipper, YouTube CEO Salar Kamangar, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman, New Yorker editor David Remnick, Warner Music Chairman Edgar Bronfman Jr., News Corp. Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey, Clear Channel CEO Bob Pittman, Legendary Pictures head Thomas Tull and Vevo CEO Rio Caraeff. And we may still have a surprise or two between now and the end of January.

All Things Digital’s first-ever media conference runs Jan. 30 and 31 at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel, an hour south of Los Angeles. See you there.

AllThingsD is all over Twitter and not just because our very own Kara Swisher is followed by more people than live in some nations.

No, our audience, our readers and the top-tier attendees at our ninth D conference were all about tweeting their days away as well.

In fact, Bill Gross, one of our attendees, liked the conference so much that he posted a story on Storify of his whole D experience rolled up in 113 tweets.

Well, Bill, we can do you one better–here’s the story of D9, according to the celebrity (and mini-celebrity) guests at D.

Ours is full of pictures (the behind the scenes kind) and links to videos. And even the inimitable @MarthaStewart makes an appearance or two.

If you love us on Twitter, feel free to follow our new accounts, which break our copious coverage into topic areas like social or mobile, so you’ll get everything you’re looking for without risking info-overload.

Enjoy (if you don’t see tweets via Storify right away, please refresh your browser and it should work):

Here’s the official press release announcing AOL’s acquisition of 5Min Media. Sources familiar with the transaction tell me it’s an all-cash deal at the high end of the $50 million to $65 million range I reported earlier today. So let’s call it $65 million.

That’s a nice outcome for 5Min’s team, and for its investors, who put in $13 million, including Globespan Capital Partners and Spark Capital. (I mistakenly identified Scott Kurnit as an angel investor in the company. He was not.) Interesting that AOL (AOL), which has extensive reach already, felt it needed to invest in a distribution play, but you can read CEO Tim Armstrong’s explanation below.

And perhaps someone can ask him about it if he makes another acquisition announcement in the near future.

AOL ACQUIRES 5MIN MEDIA, WEB’S LARGEST VIDEO CONTENT SYNDICATION PLATFORM

Combination of 5min Media and AOL’s Video Capabilities Creates Powerful
End-to-End Offering

New York, NY, September 28, 2010 – AOL Inc. [NYSE: AOL] today announced it has acquired 5min Media, the Web’s largest video syndication platform.* The acquisition allows AOL to significantly expand its consumer offering of contextually relevant, high-quality video across its sites, increasing the AOL Network’s appeal to advertisers and is expected to further enhance the distribution and monetization of AOL-produced original video content throughout the Web.** Deal terms were not disclosed.

“Our acquisition of 5min Media is the latest in a number of steps we have taken this year to better position AOL to capture the growing video opportunity on the Web,” said Tim Armstrong, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AOL. “AOL is building a video ecosystem for the next decade. 5min Media is the perfect complement to our powerful video capabilities — it provides a missing piece in the AOL value chain that completes our end-to-end video offering from content creation through syndication and distribution to the consumer experience and monetization.”

“AOL and 5min Media share the same excitement about the direction our industry is taking, and our complementary video capabilities make us a compelling fit and an attractive combination for content creators and publishers,” said Ran Harnevo, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, 5min Media. “We’ve seen rapid and successful growth as an independent organization and becoming part of AOL is a natural next step. We’re confident that AOL’s organizational horsepower, combined with the vast library, audience and syndication capabilities 5min Media offers, present compelling opportunities for AOL as well as the content creators we work with and the publishers we serve.”

Leading Video Syndication Network and Library to Enhance AOL’s Properties

5min Media is the world’s leading video syndication network with a library of more than 200,000 categorized, tagged and rated videos from more than 1,000 of the world’s largest media companies and professional independent video producers. Founded in 2006 and headquartered in New York City with offices in Tel Aviv, 5min Media has been named the largest U.S. independent video property by comScore, with more than 20 million unique viewers and more than 130 million video streams (including ad and content videos) in the U.S. in August 2010. 5min Media’s growing network of 800 partner sites allows content creators to reach this audience of targeted viewers across 21 different verticals, including six verticals – Home, Food, Beauty / Fashion, Health, Travel and Pets – that lead their categories, according to comScore Video Metrix, August 2010. VideoSeed, 5min Media’s proprietary semantic technology, contextually matches the most relevant videos with a partner site’s text content to enhance the consumer experience and increase monetization rates.

AOL has already begun to integrate 5min Media’s video content on its sites through a commercial agreement executed prior to the acquisition. “With 5min Media we’ll be able to add more video inventory to our pages. Importantly, we’ll also be able to identify video content holes among our sites, tap our StudioNow capabilities to fill those needs and create a truly ‘demand informed’ video library,” Armstrong said.

Combination Completes Next Step in AOL’s Value Chain

With the addition of 5min Media, AOL will significantly increase its consumer offering in video programming and connect consumers with high-quality video. In January, AOL acquired StudioNow, the premier online platform for quality video content creation and distribution. With StudioNow, AOL has formed a fully functional platform to produce high-quality video content in a rapid, cost-effective and scalable way for both AOL as well as third-party publishers. In addition, AOL is forging exciting new partnerships to provide relevant content to specific audiences, including partnering with: The Ellen DeGeneres Show; Marlo Thomas; The Jonas Group and MGX Lab to found Cambio (www.cambio.com); and A Squared Entertainment LLC to create children’s content featuring Warren Buffett, Gisele Bündchen, Martha Stewart and the late Carl Sagan.

This week, BoomTown took a big jet plane east to check out the doings during Internet Week in New York, as well as to moderate a keynote panel at the Digitas Digital Content NewFront with media moguls Martha Stewart of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSO) and Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post.

While still exhausted from the D: All Things Digital conference last week, how could I turn down such a pairing?

I could not!

No surprise, the two delivered a rocking show for the large crowd, including Stewart saying she would be all digital if she were starting out today and Huffington noting that she did not kill newspapers.

Here are video interviews I did with both before the panel, as well as some shots from a party Gawker Media threw at its lower Manhattan HQ for Internet Week, including a short chat with its terminally hyper CEO, Nick Denton.

Enjoy:

The Sony Dash is a $200 gadget that's like a digital photo frame on steroids: It plays videos, music, and photo slide shows, and runs over 1,000 apps. Katie asks: Is there room in our gadget-packed lives for yet another device?

Every time a technology product breaks new ground, it has to answer the question on most consumers’ minds: Do they really need this product? Most recently, Apple (AAPL) encountered this at the launch of the iPad, which confused some consumers who weren’t sure how it would fit in with their laptops and smartphones.

This week, I tested a product that represents Sony’s (SNE) attempt to wade into a new category: the $200 Dash (sony.com/dash). This gadget, labeled by the company as a Personal Internet Viewer, is like a digital photo frame on steroids. It’s meant to run in the background of your life, cycling through on-screen data, slide-show style, while sitting on a kitchen counter, desk or nightstand.

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=82CF5300-6443-449A-B8C2-58509FCBB821&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

The Dash’s content includes more than 1,000 apps, the majority of which came out of Sony’s partnership with Chumby Industries, maker of its own similar devices. These apps connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi and display frequently refreshed data like Facebook photos and statuses, tweets from Twitter.com, quiz-game questions, recipe tips, email snippets and news updates. The Dash can play videos from services like Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon’s (AMZN) Video on Demand.

But aside from some faults, Sony’s biggest challenge will be convincing people that they actually need a Dash. I used it for a week, both at my office desk and at home, and I’m not convinced I need to spend $200 to watch bursts of data appear onscreen like a slow stock ticker. I already use a smartphone, laptop or iPad to check things like social-network updates, news and email—and using these never requires waiting for the right information to cycle through a screen. There were times when I glanced at my Dash in passing and read snippets of mildly entertaining information, but these moments were few and far between.

To me, the most interesting information to pass through the Dash is that which comes from personalized apps—those that the user sets up with credentials to access content aimed specifically at him or her, like messages in email and social networks. But if the Dash is set up in a kitchen, who in the family gets to set up their account on this gadget? And is all of that content acceptable for all family members to see and read in passing? I can’t imagine teens wanting parents reading their content or vice versa.

The $200 Sony Dash is designed to offer running glances of data—some personalized—throughout the day.

Some people might like the Dash for its fancy alarm-clock capabilities. It shows weather and time information in a handsome display and can play specially chosen videos or podcasts when an alarm goes off. But smartphones like Motorola’s Backflip display time and weather information in tabletop or docked mode.

The Dash has a bright, seven-inch touch screen and an accelerometer, so it can be used vertically or flipped around and laid flat, which is better for things like typing with an on-screen keyboard that appears for certain apps. It lacks a Web browser, word-processing program and a full email program. Accessories like keyboards and mouses can’t be attached to the Dash.

Most Dash apps can be browsed directly from the Dash and added to the device, though users can load apps and adjust more app settings by going to the sony.com/mydash website, where the product must be registered, on their computer. People also can use the website to set up their Amazon and Netflix accounts so videos can play on the Dash. Pandora accounts can be set up here, too, but the Pandora app never worked correctly on my Dash.

The Facebook app lets people read friends’ status messages and comments about those status messages. They can touch an on-screen thumbs up icon to like someone’s status, and can type their own comments about someone’s status. The Twitter app let me write my own tweets, but I couldn’t retweet or direct-message other users. A Sony representative said the Dash is intended to be more of a “glanceable” product with less interaction, but that doesn’t explain why the Facebook app has interactive capabilities. The representative said they may consider improving the Twitter app in the future. Both Twitter and Facebook were slow to load on the screen, taking about four seconds each for content to appear.

Sony’s representative said my office Wi-Fi could be to blame for the Dash’s slow performance. The office Wi-Fi, however, isn’t behind firewalls and never gives me trouble for other tests. A check of my home’s Wi-Fi network showed I had a similar low 42% “link quality” on the Dash there. But my nearby MacBook and iPad showed full signal strength and worked perfectly.

The Dash has several geeky qualities. Setting it up to work with a password-protected Wi-Fi network prompts users to choose the correct key encoding—either HEX or ASCII—neither of which are familiar to most people and the Help button doesn’t clarify matters. Apps with email envelope icons in them, like Martha Stewart’s Everyday Food app, don’t let users email content (in this case, a recipe) to friends. Instead, selecting this icon sends the recipe to the person’s own email address—the one with which the device was registered—and the email says it’s from “chumby.” This name is completely confusing to people who know nothing about Chumby and its connection with Sony.

Sony is planning to fix a few flaws of the Dash and add more functions, including a way to jump directly to an app rather than cycling through the entire list of apps, through an over-the-air software update at the end of May. This fix also will enable the Dash’s USB port to play photos and music on the device. It currently isn’t functional.

Even if all bugs are fixed on the Sony Dash, I still have trouble seeing how this type of product would be worth $200 for most average users, given the way they already use other devices.

Twitter gets described as a conversation or a cocktail party, but it’s really more like a stage play. A few people do all the talking, and everyone else watches and listens.

But that’s changing, a bit, as the service grows.

Barracuda Labs, a security company that says it has surveyed 19 million Twitter accounts, reports that 73 percent of Twitter users have tweeted 10 or fewer times. And 34 percent of users have never tweeted at all.

That’s a lot of quiet users, but it’s less than before: Barracuda says those numbers are down from 79 percent and 37.1 percent, respectively, in June of last year.

Barracuda also notes that Twitter had a huge surge in growth from November 2008 through April 2009, when there was a rush of publicity about celebrities who tweet (Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, Ashton Kutcher vs. CNN, etc.). The company claims that nearly half of all Twitter accounts were created in that period.

But even high-profile Twitterers don’t tweet that much. Most of the messaging on the service, Barracuda says, comes from users with about 1,000 followers (see chart below; click to enlarge).

All of this makes for fun data points to snack on. But for Twitter’s managers and investors, the usage numbers underscore a key question the company needs to resolve: Is it a communications utility a la Facebook or is it a media company?

The Twitter guys have resisted the second notion, but that’s sure what the company looks like from the outside–because it distributes content created by a small number of people for a large number of people.

If done right, that can still be a very good business, especially if you don’t have to pay anyone to create the content.

But a service with a largely passive user base also loses out on some opportunities. Twitter’s plan to ape Google’s (GOOG) search advertising, for instance, won’t be nearly so robust if most of its users aren’t making tweets and searching for them.

Everyone in the retail world was waiting with bated breath yesterday to find out if the current economic pinch would make consumers fight harder in the discount trenches or simply sound the retreat. Either way, the AllThingsD team was at its post this week bringing you tech and trends to keep you ahead of the pack.

Kara was sorely disappointed when she realized she wouldn’t need her yoga mat for her piece on Asana, which, as it turns out, isn’t a pose that helps you channel your chi, but rather, a high-profile start-up from two former Facebookers aimed at addressing the workplace collaboration and communications space. Benchmark Capital and Andreessen Horowitz together invested $9 million in an attempt to tip the karmic balance in Asana’s favor. Kara showed no fear in a post this week addressing head-on the what-ifs raised by our spicy chairman, Rupert Murdoch. Rupe has threatened to remove content from search giant Google (GOOG) and Kara decided to fill everyone in, from the inside out. AllThingsD went a little bit Hollywood late in the week and Kara reminded us all to set our TiVos to catch our very own Katie Boehret on “The Martha Stewart Show” where she was scheduled to showcase a few cool gadgets for the holidays.

Digital Daily wasn’t quite as Zen this week, covering a few of the scintillating conflicts that always seem to plague the holiday season. It was a case of bickering brothers and Psystar style early in the week as Apple readied the deathblow against the Mac clone retailer. Apple (AAPL) claims that Psystar computers that ship with Mac OS cut too close to home and must be eliminated. Apple may be sandblasting a soda cracker just a little here as Psystar has already filed for bankruptcy. John followed up with some thoughts on foreign policy. It seems that Senators John Kerry and Orrin Hatch put on their best Hawaiian shirts, black socks and leather-man sandals this week to play the obnoxious Americans intent on bossing around the European Commission. While there was no word on whether they made a fuss about not getting ketchup with their French fries, they did encourage the EC to hurry up and approve the pending Oracle (ORCL)-Sun (JAVA) deal. Sticking with the European vacation theme, John finished out the week with news that Apple and wireless carrier O2 would begin selling iPhones at Tesco supermarkets in the U.K. We assume that, like all things sold in British grocery stores, Tesco iPhones will also come with tikka masala and malt-vinegar options.

MediaMemo was back up to full speed this week, and while we don’t blame Peter for doing his civic duty last week, we’re glad he’s back on the job. He has been closely following the decline of advertising dollars that have been blamed for everything from the death of newspapers to Lou Dobbs “going rogue.” Peter reported that Yahoo upped the ante this week with a meta-advertising campaign targeted at, yep, ad executives. That’s one way to drum up business, or so believes the team at the new Yahoo (YHOO). In another startling revelation about media consumption, the Olswang media law firm reported that iPhone consumers tend to be willing to pay for some content. Peter echoed the same, reporting some purchases of his own. In yet another story about a potential grab for media dollars, Peter reported that Hulu, the online television giant, grew in both content and viewership. Peter reminded us that viewers everywhere are holding their breath for when the juggernaut throws up that pay wall.

Katie held down the Mossberg fort this week and did so even while simultaneously appearing on TV. Quite a feat, but lady geeks have special two-places-at-once powers. Back underground at Mossberg HQ, she reviewed Clicker, a Web site aiming to be the place to find any TV program you might want to watch. The service will point you to wherever a particular episode may live in electronically viewable format and does so without cluttering results with the Web’s video jetsam. She praised the service on the whole, but warned that it’s not a magic bullet. If you are directed to a site that features a pesky proprietary media player, you will still have to make the download. She said that the user account on the site will even let you use it like an online TiVo (TIVO), alerting you when shows have posted and building you a playlist.

Please take care while nursing your Post Retail Stress Disorder this weekend, and take solace that while you may never fully use that knee again, you did get your four-dollar toaster. Tune in next week: Weekend Update will bring you the all-meat, no filler account of the week’s events at AllThingsD.

Twitter messaging can be improved by employing software programs that customize it and require little work on the part of the user, Katherine Boehret writes in The Mossberg Solution.

Most people who aren’t familiar with Twitter are eager to list the reasons why they don’t use this social-networking service. It’s for narcissists. It’s for teenagers. It’s for people who have nothing better to do. It’s a forum for oversharing. While all of these things may be true in some cases, I find Twitter’s 140-character messaging network to be an incredibly useful tool in my everyday life.

I use Twitter as my personalized news feed by following people who “tweet” (write updates) about things that interest me. In one glance I can read White House correspondent Mark Knoller’s tweets about President Obama’s activities, a recipe tweeted by Martha Stewart and WSJ.com tweets with links to news stories.

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=9EFC78D1-32E5-48B0-B73F-EB55E9468BA6&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

But Twitter works best with a little help from its friends, namely those programs that are designed to make it more customized and useful with minimal work on the user’s behalf. Here’s a rundown of just some of these helpers. I’m focusing only on ones that run on your computer, either in Web browsers or as stand-alone programs. There is also a plethora of Twitter applications that work on mobile devices like the iPhone and BlackBerry, too many to go into here. A few Twitter programs let you lurk and read tweets without a Twitter account, but in most cases these programs require a Twitter user name and password so they can better organize tweets of the people whom you follow.

To get a Twitter account in the first place, you will need to sign up with a user name and password at Twitter.com and start following people—or subscribing to read someone’s updates. These may be friends or people you simply find interesting, like journalists whose work you read (my Twitter user name is kabster728). You can see whom one person follows, and then opt also to follow those same people and the people those people follow and so on. Though it’s possible to lock your account so it’s private, very few people do so because Twitter encourages open communication throughout the Web.

That said, you can always choose to block someone from following you or stop following someone’s Twitter feed. You can comment on a tweet by sending the person who wrote it an “at reply,” named because the reply starts with the “@” sign followed by the user name of the person to whom you are replying. You can also send direct messages to another Twitter user as long as he or she is following you.

All-Purpose Programs

TweetDeck and Seesmic are two programs that do a good job of filtering others’ tweets and aiding the process of writing tweets. Both use Adobe Air, a tool that lets the program work in the background while continuously refreshing its content. This increases productivity because the programs can be set to display pop-up notifications whenever certain tweets appear.

TweetDeck (a free download at TweetDeck.com) organizes tweets into columns that you designate, such as a column of all tweets that mention your name, your company’s name or the word “Wimbledon.” It eases the process of writing tweets by building in ways to shorten Web links, post photos or translate a tweet into one of 35 languages. TweetDeck also integrates with Facebook so that one TweetDeck column displays your Facebook friends’ latest status updates.

The most recent version of TweetDeck enables synchronization of accounts with an email and password. This means that you can download TweetDeck on several computers, log into your account and see the same columns and settings on all platforms. The new version also includes fun extras like search within each column and the option to show how many followers a user has by displaying that number below his or her tweets.

Seesmic (a free download at seesmic.com) is another all-purpose Twitter program. It works much like TweetDeck, but has a few differences. Seesmic also integrates with Facebook, but does so in a more robust way, showing when Facebook friends share photos or Web links and letting you comment on or “like” someone’s status; TweetDeck only shows Facebook status updates.

Seesmic lets you drag photos into a small window for sharing via Twitter. But its overall look isn’t as visually appealing as TweetDeck’s and it lacks some of TweetDeck’s extra features.

Twhirl (twhirl.org) also runs on Adobe Air, working in the background as you use your computer for other activities. Like the aforementioned programs, it also enables easier tweeting with built-in tools for photo uploading and URL shrinking. Unlike TweetDeck and Seesmic, which focus on Twitter and Facebook, Twhirl enables logging into four types of accounts: Twitter, FriendFeed, Laconi.ca and Identica. But Twhirl shows only one category at a time, like a screen of replies, rather than showing all of these categories at a glance like TweetDeck and Seesmic.

Browser Power

Some Twitter programs run in browsers, not as stand-alone programs. This saves you from downloading a program on multiple computers because you can simply log into your account on any computer using its Web browser. But these programs won’t use the helpful pop-up notifications of Adobe Air; instead, you will need to look in your browser to see new information—like opening Twitter.com.

One such browser-based program is HootSuite (HootSuite.com), which uses an owl as its mascot. HootSuite’s unique features include its ability to set tweets to send at a later time or date, giving your followers the illusion that you are tweeting when you’re actually not, and a built-in statistic-tracker to measure how many people opened a link you posted using its ow.ly URL shortener. Like Twhirl, HootSuite shows only certain categories at a time rather than one overall glance at many categories of tweets.

Twitter.com is getting better, though it’s still weak compared with these other programs. I’ve used add-ons in my Firefox browser to enhance Twitter, and one called Power Twitter is like steroids for Twitter.com, adding photo uploading and link shortening right into the Web site. It also makes friends’ tweets richer by displaying details about any Web links that they share.

No Sign-Up Necessary

If you’re just curious about Twitter and want to see what people are talking about without signing up, try sites that are open to everyone. Twitterfall.com, for example, displays tweets about trending Twitter topics and custom search results in a waterfall-like visual with new tweets spilling over the top every half second. TwitterVision.com cleverly displays tweets around the world on a global map as they are posted, showing where the tweets are from, geographically.

Twitter isn’t limited to Twitter.com, and I wouldn’t likely use it as much were it not for programs like the ones I’ve mentioned and others. So give them a try and find out what makes Twitter useful for you.

Co-CEO Wenda Millard is out at at Martha Stewart Living OmniMedia. The company will not replace her but will divvy up her responsibilities among its current execs, including Martha Stewart herself.

Co-CEO Wenda Millard is out at at Martha Stewart Living OmniMedia (MSO). The company will not replace her but will divvy up her responsibilities among its current execs, including Martha Stewart herself.

No word on what Millard, who is best known as the longtime leader of Yahoo’s (YHOO) sales force, plans to do next. Even while she has been running Stewart’s multimedia empire along with co-CEO Robin Marino, she’s remained highly visible in the online ad world, popping up frequently to decry the rise of advertising networks.

UPDATE: Millard will become president at Media Link, a media consultancy founded by Michael Kassan, who she says has been courting her some time. “This had nothing to do with leaving Martha Stewart. It had everything with going to Media Link,” she told me from San Francisco, where she had just received a lifetime achievement award at the ad:tech conference. “This is a very, very timely opportunity. People need a lot of help navigating in this environment, and this kind of strategic advice is exactly what companies need today.”

Millard’s departure from the company isn’t a shock because she has long been rumored to be unhappy at Martha Stewart. She and Marino took over the company last summer when Susan Lyne left the CEO post; Lyne later landed at e-commerce start-up Gilt Group. Last fall, Millard was reportedly feuding with Stewart and was supposedly heading to sell ads for Microsoft (MSFT), a story she denied when I asked her about it. Here’s the release:

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Inc. today announced a reorganization of its Media business. The Company also announced that Wenda Harris Millard is stepping down from her post as President of Media and Co-CEO. The company has no plans to replace Ms. Millard or name a new co-CEO.

Martha Stewart, MSLO’s Founder, will oversee all editorial and creative functions. MSLO Chairman Charles Koppelman, who in addition to serving as the Company’s Principal Executive Officer, will now oversee MSLO’s Media businesses. Robin Marino will continue to oversee Merchandising, serving as the segment’s President and CEO, and to report to Mr. Koppelman. Ms. Marino is expected to be recommended to join MSLO’s Board of Directors.

Mr. Koppelman stated: “We are grateful to Wenda for all of her work on behalf of MSLO. Wenda has been a champion of Martha’s groundbreaking Omnimedia vision on which this company was built. She has been an effective leader of a very talented team as we’ve expanded our franchises and grown our cross-platform programs.”

“Robin will continue to work with me to identify new opportunities and create synergies across our Media and Merchandising businesses,” Mr. Koppelman added.

Ms. Millard stated: “I am very proud of the contributions I’ve made to MSLO over the past five years, first as a board member and most recently as President of Media and co-CEO. We’ve built an agile team and a strong foundation for future growth.”

UPDATE: Millard will become president at Media Link, a media consultancy founded by Michael Kassan, who she says has been courting her for some time (press release below).

Wenda Harris Millard Joins Media Link LLC as President

Sets Course to Further Grow Strategic Advisory Firm

NEW YORK (April 22, 2009) Media Link LLC, the preeminent media representation and strategic advisory firm to the marketing, media, entertainment and advertising industries, today announced that Wenda Harris Millard, an internet advertising pioneer and a widely-known and respected marketing and media executive, will join the firm as President, working with Chief Executive and Founder, Michael E.
“Media Link has experienced dramatic growth in both the volume and scope of its business during the last several years,” says Mr. Kassan, who founded the firm seven years ago. “I am very proud to have someone of Wenda’s industry stature joining Media Link as my partner. She is credited with elevating the company to its #1 position in percent of revenue derived from digital advertising among all other “traditional” media companies, She led MSLO’s investments in Wedding Wire and Pingg and was the company’s driving force behind creating cross-platform programs for marketers in TV, digital, magazines and radio.

Before MSLO, Ms Millard was Chief Sales Officer at Yahoo! and prior to that was Chief Internet Officer at Ziff Davis Media and President of Ziff Davis Internet. Previously, Ms Millard was a founding member of the executive team at DoubleClick, where she served as Executive Vice President responsible for establishing the DoubleClick brand and overseeing the operations of DoubleClick Media. She also served as President and Group Publisher of SRDS, Senior Vice President and Publisher of Family Circle and Executive Vice President/Group Publisher of Adweek, Mediaweek and Brandweek magazines.

Ms Millard has received numerous industry awards. She is currently Chairman of the Interactive Advertising Bureau.

Media Link’s Representation division conceptualizes and brokers media, sponsorship, integration, and alliance deals at the highest levels between media, entertainment, marketing and advertising firms. The Company represents traditional media players and digital, out-of-home and branded entertainment companies, including more than a dozen of the top Hollywood content producers and distributors. Media Link’s Strategic Advisory division provides consulting services to consumer brands in their corporate and cross-company marketing, media, and advertising strategies and implementations. Media Link draws on the knowledge and relationships of an elite, handpicked group of in-house Subject Matter Experts (former media buyers, agency heads, and senior executives at brand advertisers and integrated media conglomerates).
When she reorganized the Yahoo management ranks three weeks ago, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz left some glaring empty spaces in her management chart, including for a chief financial officer, the top international exec and a new post for a customer advocacy czar.

So, who should get the nod for each? But might BoomTown suggest closet geek and good-thing expert Martha Stewart for Yahoo's consumer guru?

When she reorganized the Yahoo management ranks three weeks ago, Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz left some glaring empty spaces in her management chart, including for a chief financial officer, the top international exec and a new post for some kind of customer advocacy czar.

Here is the chart of direct reports to Bartz with the unfilled-as-yet spaces at Yahoo (YHOO) in it (click on the chart to make it larger):

So, who should get the nod for each?

There are many likely candidates for the CFO role, of course, especially given that the person who gets the nod does not have to be an Internet exec and also that there are lots and lots of high-ranking financial folks more available then ever these days.

But Yahoo will probably opt for a CFO who can both weigh in judiciously on how to focus spending going forward at Yahoo (as one person close to the situation said to me: “Yahoo cannot just cut itself to greatness”), as well as be able to make deals.

One of the many names that have popped up as an interesting idea from a source is former Microsoft (MSFT) dealmaker Bruce Jaffe. The former VP of corporate development left the software giant in January of 2008, right before it made its failed bid for Yahoo, and has since worked as an adviser to Glam Media.

As for international, there are lots of potential candidates for that job too, such as London-based Joost CEO Mike Volpi (who is actually always on a lot of Web company job short lists) to the plethora of internationally-focused execs all over the map, so to speak.

But BoomTown is altogether perplexed at who would be good at the customer advocacy job, which sounds kind of squishy and unclear. Is it like a newspaper ombudsman or like the fine folks over at Consumer Reports?

Or is it meant to me someone who looks over all products and services at Yahoo to make sure those creating and tweaking them always have the consumer in mind?

Because, if that’s the case, it seems to me that is Job #1 for Bartz, as well as everyone working at Yahoo.

That said, my personal candidate: Martha Stewart–a closet geek and someone who can tell you when it’s a good thing.

Or not.

Early this morning, Bloomberg reported that regulators are looking into Apple’s disclosures about the health–or lack thereof–of its iconic CEO Steve Jobs.

According to the story, the Securities and Exchange Commission is conducting a review of Apple (AAPL) “to ensure investors weren’t misled, a person familiar with the matter said. The Securities and Exchange Commission’s review doesn’t mean investigators have seen evidence of wrongdoing, the person said, declining to be identified because the inquiry isn’t public.”

And while BoomTown has railed against the creepy obsession the media have had with Jobs’s health and the publishing of rumors and innuendos about it as fact without a whole lot of reporting, I hope it is true.

It is also entirely appropriate that the government agency charged with keeping an eye on public companies does investigate–at the very least, to get the story right.

Because if the press and blogosphere and Apple aren’t going to do it, I vote for the one with subpoena power to sort it all out and make some levelheaded determinations about the rules of the road.

(And, frankly, it is good to see the SEC more vigorous after its stunningly moribund record of late–Hello, Bernie Madoff!)

Apple’s COO and acting CEO Tim Cook, by the way, will likely be questioned about the SEC look-see, Steve Jobs’s health and more at its first-quarter conference call at 2 p.m. PST today.

Of course, the health of its business is the most important thing–sales of iPods and iPhones, new products and what Apple will do with its $25 billion cash horde.

But the focus will surely be on Jobs and now, this government inquiry.

What will be most interesting is exactly how much companies do have to reveal about the health of their leadership and whether the relative fame and brand-critical nature of that exec matters more.

For example, do leaders like Jobs or, say, Martha Stewart, have more need to discuss their health than some lesser known CEO who might have a similar problem?

And since it has been well known that Jobs suffered from a bout with pancreatic cancer and recovered, does he have to disclose it all, given that even his curable version of the illness has complications that are well documented?

And, most of all, how specific do Apple and Jobs have to be, and how frequently do they have to update, especially since a diagnosis is always a moving target?

More to the point, given that the bordering-on-crazed attention given to Jobs–who engenders so much passionate emotion–has also been off-putting and, worse, all over the map in terms of accurate information, what clarity can regulators provide?

Apple has been under increasing pressure, since Jobs revealed he had a “hormonal imbalance,” soon after which he announced that he was taking a five-month medical leave from his duties because his health problems were “more complex.”

I am less strident than others on this turn of events since having accurate health information about yourself is not quite the same as, say, details of a merger and who knew what when.

Plus it has been clear for a long time that all has not been well with Jobs, something any investor had to be aware of.

I have no inside information; nor have I talked to anyone who has treated him, but anyone who has not been on Mars for the past year could see that Jobs was not looking great, especially from his woefully haggard appearance.

As I have written:

Apple investors who have not figured Jobs’s precarious health–after a round with any kind of cancer–into their investment strategies about Apple going forward need some serious reality medication themselves.

Guess what? Jobs has been really sick and it means he is going to have a harder time with any kind of infection or complication for the rest of his life, and he will likely be more delicate than someone who has not had cancer.”

Who knows if the government will find out more, but it would be good if some of the smoke could be cleared away to see if there is some actual fire or not.

And if not, Jobs can get the peace he is seeking to try to recover his health.

As he said to Bloomberg last week: “Why don’t you guys leave me alone–why is this important?”

It would be nice to be get that answer and then, hopefully, let Jobs get on with getting well.

Despite rumors, the co-CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Wenda Harris Millard says she's getting along just fine with Martha Stewart and isn't going to run Microsoft's online unit. So who is?

Wenda Harris Millard sat down for an entertaining question-and-answer at paidContent’s “EconWomen” conference today.

And while the co-CEO of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSO) insisted that her relationship with founder Martha Stewart was just fine, I wanted to be clear: Was there any truth to a recent New York Post report that said she was feuding with Martha, and would end up running Microsoft’s online unit?

So I asked her.

“There’s nothing to it. I’m not going to Microsoft or anywhere else,” she told me.

Fair enough. Anybody want to take issue with that?

If you’re willing to use your real name, you can leave a comment below. If you want to be more discreet, you can email me: peter@allthingsd.com.

Meanwhile, a question still left unanswered: Who is going to run digital for Microsoft (MSFT), anyway?

At its EconCeleb conference in Hollywood today, ContentNext released its list of the most influential and innovative online celebrities today.

It is an interesting and varied list that includes everyone from powerhouse Oprah (pictured here, of course!) to the bisexual sprite, Tila Tequila.

The list, in ascending order:

10. Martha Stewart (she is actually a closet geek)

9. Tila Tequila (vile, but in a good way)

8. Peter Gabriel (a longtime Web pioneer in the digital music space)

7. Radiohead (innovative band pushing Web distribution boundaries)

6. Stephen Colbert (funny online and off)

5. 50 Cent (the urban rap artist as nerd)

4. Oprah Winfrey (um, she’s runs the real world and could run the Internet if she felt like it)

3. Ashton Kutcher (not just a pretty face, but one who gets the power of viral marketing)

2. Will.i.am (for that Barack Obama mashup video alone)

1. Will Ferrell, Chris Henchy & Adam McKay (FunnyOrDie.com might not make money, but it is very funny)

Project Granola?

Apparently, that’s the jokey nickname that’s been given by some in the company to Microsoft’s (MSFT) new online strategy, in the wake of its failed efforts to acquire Yahoo (YHOO) that ended in a big heap of mess this past weekend.

Now, sources tell BoomTown, it is all about “organic”–hence the image of a healthy handful of granola (except for the fact that, in my experience, nobody really likes granola after eating it as much as they think will before).

In any case, it is a word Microsoft folks have been slipping into the conversations with BoomTown over the past few days, so much so that I have started to feel like I was talking to execs from Whole Foods.

Now Microsoft’s greenness has gone public.

Case in point: Brian Hall, Windows Live General Manager, who trotted out the organic word in front of Merrill Lynch analysts yesterday, as reported by CNET’s Ina Fried, saying: “We’ve withdrawn the offer and moved on, and now are focused on how we grow as fast as possible organically.”

But what does organic mean exactly?

Two things, it seems.

First, stepping up spending on marketing, technology and research to try to find ways to differentiate from Google (GOOG) and get into the No. 2 spot now held by Yahoo.

Of course, that plan has not worked out so well as yet for the software giant, with Microsoft spending billions of dollars with no profits and little gain in online search or ad market share, while its archrival Google keeps growing stronger.

Even so, while in Korea today, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates backed Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s do-it-yourself path and his move to walk away from Yahoo.

“The key decisions on that will be made by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who took a look at Yahoo and decided that, on our own, he likes the stuff that we’re doing,” said Gates.

Gates also added what amounts to the second option for Microsoft. “I wouldn’t rule out some partnerships, but we don’t have anything imminent there,” he said.

While a return to Yahoo is a possibility, in fact, buying up Web 2.0 stars is likely to be a bigger focus of the company.

“Yahoo can twist,” said one source. “Microsoft has lots and lots of other options.”

According to sources close to the company, for example, Microsoft’s bankers had been putting out subtle signals to Facebook to see if it would be open to a full buyout.

Microsoft already invested $240 million in the hot social-networking site, an investment that gave Facebook its kooky $15 billion valuation.

And its execs have long told Facebook execs they wouldn’t mind a bigger bite–um, like all of it.

“We just wanted to gauge their interest, more than any real effort,” said another source, who expects Facebook to stick to its longish path to an eventual IPO.

But, as is no secret, Microsoft has selections all over Silicon Valley to help it improve its Internet chances.

Those would include buying bigger vertical sites in strong categories like autos or jobs or finance, and also scooping up smaller but fast-growing socially oriented sites like Digg, Meebo, Yelp or focusing on ad plays like Spot Runner (which just got another big dollop of funding).

There might even be some sense in spinning some of these and all Microsoft Web units off into a separate Internet company, which would be another way of integrating even bigger deals for properties like Time Warner’s (TWX) AOL or News Corp.’s (NWS) MySpace (which are longer shots, I think).

In a post I did in February right after Yahoo rebuffed Microsoft for the first time, I suggested such a course for the company.

As I wrote:

Here’s a list: LinkedIn. Digg. Flixster. Slide or RockYou. Veoh. WordPress. Sphere. Sugar. Some international stuff. And more.

Then, some noted, Microsoft would have to give massive financial incentives to those entrepreneurs to stay and thrive. Most importantly, it would have to keep its Redmond hands from interfering.

Now that would send shivers up the spine of Larry and Sergey.”

And that, most of all, would be more like icing on the cake for Microsoft and be much more tasty than a bowl full of granola.

And, as Martha Stewart says: It’s a good thing.

I am now at the DLD conference in Munich, which is put on by Hubert Burda Media, a gathering that has become one of Europe’s most interesting in recent years.

The three-day DLD–which stands for Digital, Life, Design–focuses on digital innovation, science and culture and has the most cosmopolitan audience of any conference out there.

It is chaired by publisher Hubert Burda and serial Israeli investor Joseph Vardi and hosted by Stephanie Czerny and Marcel Reichart.

It is interesting to be here to garner a lot of different viewpoints from outside the U.S., and I will be visiting a lot of German Web start-ups over the next week.

There is also a lot of Olympic-level schmoozing, of course, since there are precious few such events in Europe compared to the conference-crazy U.S.

There are also, of course, a lot of the usual suspects from the States and especially Silicon Valley.

So far this morning, I have run into folks like former Microsoftie Linda Stone, Yahoo’s Bradley Horowitz, writer and entrepreneur Esther Dyson, Facebook’s Matt Cohler and, yes, Martha Stewart (who needs no introduction).

I am also here to interview onstage for DLD today Kenneth Roth (pictured here), longtime executive director of Human Rights Watch, which investigates, reports on and seeks to curb human-rights abuses in some 70 countries.

To say I am out of my league in interviewing such a serious and substantive figure is an understatement, especially given that I spend all my time contemplating the monetization of widgets (to be more specific, the non-monetization), the fate of content on the Web and the exact date the hype of social networking will end.

Still, I will give it my best effort and perhaps focus on the use of digital tools to get information and stories of heinous injustices out worldwide. After all, the Web has to be more than SuperPoking and dumb online videos on cats skateboarding.

Our session is aptly named: “Inconvenient Stories.”

My favorite kind.

Video, of course, to follow.

Incredibly, it is the 25th anniversary of Martha Stewart’s first big splash with her iconic book, “Entertaining,” which pretty much ushered in the boom in lifestyle content.

While Stewart is known for her focus on home-making skills, some might not know that she is also a bit of a geek, who has been a fixture at many tech events over the years.

For example, she has been an active audience member at our D: All Things Digital conference over the last two years (here she is at D4, grilling Sony CEO Howard Stringer about why there had to be so many wires with her devices).

In this interview with WSJ Online, she talks about her company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, including its many forays into the Internet area.

That will soon mean a new site she has dubbed “Marthapedia,” or–as BoomTown likes to call it–”All Things Martha.”

Charles Simonyi was out of this world onstage, literally.

The early top Microsoft exec, who more recently founded Intentional Software, boldly went where few had gone before, by taking a ride into space. As one of the first space tourists, he spent 11 days on board the International Space Station earlier this year.

Oh, also, good friend Martha Stewart was there to see him off (and also watched him at the conference).

By way of background, D: All Things Digital, the annual tech and media conference Walt Mossberg and I host, has been sold out with a long wait list every year we have put it on.

That has meant only a few hundred people can see the interviews and also demos we do live onstage with some of the tech and media industry’s most interesting and important players and products.

The lineups have included Microsoft’s Bill Gates and Apple’s Steve Jobs, as well as Eric Schmidt of Google, IAC’s Barry Diller, Meg Whitman of eBay, Cisco’s John Chambers and many others.

And we’ve demoed stuff like the Treo when it first came out, as well as digital toilets, Wi-Fi phones and much more.

We usually post the photos and videos of the interviews and demos six or more months after they take place on a separate conference site. This year, our Digital Daily’s John Paczkowski live-blogged D5, and we also posted video highlights from all of the sessions immediately on our newly launched site here.

Now, we are posting videos of every session of the 2007 conference here, in full, and we have made all our photo galleries, hosted by SmugMug and mostly shot by our fabulous Asa Mathat, public too. You can also access our videos via the site’s master player here.

Every day, I have been highlighting a different interview or demo from the conference and this is the final one, although all are still here for good for your perusal and enjoyment.

Here’s Simonyi:

BoomTown has long been a big fan of Martha Stewart.

And we like her 25% more now, after seeing the new pictures she took for Wired’s latest issue, as well as a particularly sassy interview she did with the magazine.

The homemaking empress is on the cover of Wired, pictured here making a Wii-shaped cake. It looks delicious, but apparently is not from these recipe instructions that leave out the baking soda for architectural reasons.

And another picture here by Jill Greenberg has her pruning a robot hedge, along with this interview with Mark Frauenfelder on her gadget-freak status.

That’s been easy to see for many years. I ran into her first more than a decade ago at a Microsoft party at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and she has shown up at a variety of Silicon Valley events from time to time.

In addition, Stewart has attended the D conference for the past two years, first accompanying Martha Stewart Omnimedia CEO Susan Lyne, who appeared onstage at D4. But I was surprised to observe that she has actually been one of the few attendees who has sat through all of the sessions from start to finish.

She even managed to fire off a very funny but pointed series of questions at D4 to Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer about the nest of wires current gadgets require to operate. Here she is pictured grilling Stringer and also showing one of D‘s teen panelists how to properly fold a T-shirt.

In the current interview with Wired, Stewart makes some other salient points, especially about quality. “Whether you’re a programmer or a seamstress, it’s all about new techniques, simplifying old techniques and consolidating steps,” she said. “Making things go faster–but not worse. Better.”

She also jokingly blames the end of her marriage on the Walkman, which she calls the “Rudeman,” and decries using email over talking, although she seems pretty addicted to her BlackBerry from what I have seen (to be fair, so am I).

And Stewart is also apparently working on “Marthapedia,” which is her take on the user-contributed Wikipedia project. Of course, it being Martha, she will be editing user content.

“It won’t be as freewheeling as Wikipedia,” she said. “Because a lot of this–you have to really monitor it.”

And that is a good thing.
