The popular, albeit odd, book is coming out as a movie this summer, with the description: “President Lincoln’s mother is killed by a supernatural creature, which fuels his passion to crush vampires and their slave-owning helpers.”

It’s happened to everyone–the terrible fallout from eating at that unfamiliar restaurant with the spoons that were a little too greasy, or the chicken that was served a little too rare.

My worst was bad dim sum.

Max Stoller obviously knows the feeling.

So, this computer science junior at New York University has developed donteat.at, a Web service that saves New Yorkers the pain caused by an unclean restaurant, one Foursquare check-in at a time.

To understand how the app works, one needs a little background.

In New York City, the health inspector grades restaurants on a golf-style points scale, where less is better.

More than 28 points will land the restaurant on a flagged list that triggers frequent inspections, or even a shut-down, if the score does not go down.

Stoller’s app, donteat.at, parses the weekly-updated public data set for those flagged establishments and keeps an updated list of violators.

From then on, if a donteat.at user ever checks in via Foursquare to a restaurant that has been flagged, they receive a text message alerting them to that fact.

“In under a minute–I worked very hard on that,” said Stoller.

To activate the service, users visit www.donteat.at, authorize the link with a Foursquare account, then continue to use Foursquare normally.

There is no additional user interface.

“It’s just there.” Stoller said, “Most users just come to the Web site once.”

Stoller’s application of the data and the always watching over you user experience turned a relatively simple data mashup to something more like a public service.

Stoller developed donteat.at for the NYC Big Apps competition, a contest sponsored by the NYC Economic Development Corporation and the city’s Department of Information Technology and Telecommunication.

NYC Big Apps challenges developers to build new use cases for New York City’s massive public data mine, which includes almost 400 separate structured data sets, ranging from bike rack locations to the city’s full financial data.

“The idea is just to make all that data more accessible,” Stoller said.

Stoller was looking for something productive to do over his winter break while home in Long Island, and heard about the contest.

“I don’t have any real hobbies other than food, so this is what I went with,” he explained.

In some ways, Stoller has poked a hole in a problem that media organizations and advertisers have been picking at for years now–how to deliver highly relevant information to the right people at the most opportune moment.

The key seems to be tapping into the user, not the data.

Stoller’s application, rather than putting a map mashup of geographically-coded data at the heart of the app, focuses on the user’s activity as the trigger.

People get the data when they need it, because they are asking for it, albeit passively.

Stoller said the next upgrade would include coverage of San Francisco, although he expected implementing a comprehensive data set for the city would be a major barrier.

He also discussed other features that could be added to donteat.at, like texting users when a place they’ve been notified about has made it off of the naughty list.

“The data is there,” he said. “But it’s not always clean, well formatted, or even clear.”

About 4,000 companies quickly signed up to be early testers in the preview program, and Google said it had thousands of requests to be notified when it becomes available, which will be in a few weeks.

DocVerse was founded in 2008 by Sinha and Alex DeNeui, who both used to work at Microsoft. It raised only $1.3 million in venture funding from Baseline Ventures, Harrison Metal and Naval Ravikant.

Google’s acquisition of it was yet another shot across Microsoft’s software bow, along with a range of mashups of cloud computing and productivity applications.

For example, Google has been pushing its own cloud-based Google Docs to compete against the Office juggernaut.

For its part, Microsoft has committed itself to moving its hugely popular productivity suite–which includes Word, PowerPoint and Excel–into the cloud, in order to protect its software hegemony.

Why? Simultaneous group-editing and collaboration online is the future of Office.

Clearly, the race for productivity applications is in the cloud.

So–along with Cloud Connect –Sinha has been put in charge of deploying a $50 a person package of them, including Sites, Gmail, Docs, Calendar and Video, to millions of business users.

Here is Sinha talking about all of that and more in the video interview I did with him:

Zillow and eBay offer up some year-end stats on mobile visits. Read on to find out which site saw record mobile traffic on Christmas and the day after.

By themselves, end-of-the-year stats can be kind of boring, so I decided to take two such compilations and create one of those mashups all the kids are talking about.

Both Zillow and eBay offered up some mobile facts and figures on Wednesday, and it turns out one of the companies saw its biggest ever mobile usage on the Christmas and the day after Christmas.

And if you guessed it was from all of those people putting up their unwanted presents on eBay, you are completely, 100 percent…wrong. Dec. 25 and 26 saw record mobile traffic to Zillow.

In general, mobile traffic to the real-estate site surges whenever people are out of the office. During the average weekday, Zillow says that only about 15 percent of traffic comes from mobile devices. On a typical weekend, anywhere from one-fifth to one quarter of Zillow’s traffic is from phones. On Thanksgiving, that figure reached 30 percent, while Christmas Day saw a record number of visits to the mobile site, with phones accounting for a third of all Zillow’s traffic.

As for eBay, it said Dec. 12 was its busiest mobile sales day ever, with the number of transactions well more than double that of the busiest day of 2009. That marked two years in a row that the second Sunday in December was the busiest eBay shopping day.

For those who want to slice eBay’s mobile business in all sorts of ways, the company has posted an interactive graphic with all sorts of fun facts. For instance, auto parts represented 15 percent of mobile sales in Germany as compared with only 8 percent in the U.S.

Myspace and Facebook are announcing a partnership today via GoToMeeting webinar. As I wrote last night, it's become quite obvious that the partnership will include integration of Facebook Connect into Myspace.

Myspace and Facebook are announcing a partnership today via GoToMeeting webinar. As I wrote last night, it’s become quite obvious that the partnership will include integration of Facebook Connect into Myspace.

Presenting at the webinar will be Myspace CEO Mike Jones–-who has been pitching Myspace as “a social entertainment destination” rather than a social network–-and Dan Rose, VP of Partnerships and Platform Marketing for Facebook.

Here are my live notes:

Mike Jones says the launch today is called “Mashup with Facebook.” Users can share a stream of entertainment content with one-click setup.

One million users engaged so far with Myspace Facebook through initial partnership of “Sync with Facebook,” which was launched in August to push user streams on Myspace to Facebook. Adding Facebook Like button soon.

Image to the right is Myspace’s special branding of its integration with Facebook Connect: “Mashup.”

Dan Rose: Every day 10,000 Web sites integrate with Facebook Connect, but this one is special. Adding users into the experience works when it’s naturally social in the offline world, and entertainment is social.

Rose says Facebook users will be able to take their Likes to Facebook as well.

Jones says this feature will be rolling out to the full Myspace audience today.

Rose says, “There’s nothing different about this implementation than any other Facebook Connect implementation or any other implementation of the Facebook Like button across the Web.”

Jones says, “We think this is a complementary offering to Facebook and other social platforms.”

Rose says it’s good that Myspace is focused on entertainment and Facebook is focused on being a social platform, and those things are different.

In the last couple of days (since the Facebook Connect option was rolled out on the Myspace signup page), metrics for people connecting with Facebook look good, says Jones, but he doesn’t specify. (He keeps saying things are good questions, and then not really answering them.)

There is no financial component to the relationship.

And that’s it! Pretty mellow.

Please see the disclosure about Facebook in my ethics statement.

Case in point, this comparison of scenes from a trailer from the latest Batman movie, “The Dark Knight” and that of 1989′s original “Batman.”

Incredibly, many of the scenes are almost exactly alike.

(I had posted some trailers from “The Dark Knight” here, at the time of actor Heath Ledger’s death in January. Ledger stars in the upcoming movie as a very malevolent Joker.)
