As far as Twitter memes go, this one isn't exactly going to topple a dictatorship. But it could cause some breakups.

Oh, Twitter trends. Without you, how would we know anything, about anything? How would we know that Jeremy Lin has taken the NBA by storm after crashing on his brother’s couch? How would we know that Adele’s Grammy performance was real-TV worthy, and Chris Brown’s was definitely not? And how would we know that Friday is the day we’re supposed give innocuous shout-outs to seemingly random groups of microblogging fiends?

How would we even know that today is Valentine’s Day, were it not for #FedValentines and the now-emerging meme of #candyheartrejects that is Twitter-trending across New York, San Francisco and the rest of the U.S. right now?

Well, I would certainly know — I’ve written about Valentine’s Day tech trends twice today already. And after this, I am done. Finito! But some of these popping up on Twitter right now are just too good to pass up:

Look, it might just be an Internet meme, but it’s a good one, turning a bad situation into something else.

I am not sure what that is exactly, but above you can see the Thanksgiving version of one of the many takes on Tumblr placing the pepper-spraying cop in different and unlikely scenes.

And below it is a new T-shirt that mashes up the pepper-spray meme with the much-beloved Honey Badger one.

The Swisher boys and I are giant fans of “Annoying Orange,” the YouTube video sensation that stars a very irksome citrus fruit (not to be confused with a bitter, teensy one).

That’s why I was thrilled that the meme finally penned a long-expected deal with the Cartoon Network to produce a regular animated 30-minute cable television series for 2012.

Apparently, the toothy Orange and his long-suffering fruit and vegetable friends will travel through time in a “magical fruit car” and have adventures.

I am in — and, presumably, Apple, even after the knife incident.

You can see that below, along with my favorite Webisode, “Sandy Claus”:

Martin Luther King, Jr. didn't say it, and magician/satirist Penn Jillette says he did. Except so does someone named Jessica Dovey.

So we’ve established that a quote attributed to Martin Luther King Jr. that’s gone viral in the last two days wasn’t the work of Martin Luther King Jr.

So whose work is it?

Mine, says magician/satirist Penn Jillette.*

Mine, says Jessica Dovey, who up until now hasn’t been famous.

Who’s right? You got me. Both Jillette and Dovey have claimed credit for the quote–“I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy”–via Twitter. And both say they were using it to comment on the celebrations of Osama bin Laden’s killing.

Jillette’s explanation: “I checked a long quote from MLK’s “Strength to love” 1963 that spoke to some of my feelings, then I cut and pasted an altered hunk. Sorry.”

Davey says more or less the same thing: “Somewhere my words got mixed with his.” Except that she points to a Facebook post she made yesterday that seemingly illustrates what happened: She mashed up a direct quote from King with the other, non-King quote.

Jillette has since retweeted Dovey’s credit claim, without comment. Some folks will read that as an admission that he’s agreeing with her after all, but I’d love to get comments from both of them so that we can put this thing to rest and move on.

*UPDATE: Jillette, via Twitter, is now elaborating, and passing credit to…someone else, while taking blame for posting it anyway. “The article is wrong. I didn’t start the MLK quote and I didn’t do it on purpose. I checked before posting but not enough. My mistake.” I believe, the article he’s referring to is this one from Salon.com.

NMA depicts Cheezburger CEO Ben Huh as an evil stealer of memes, over-worker of cats and receiver of Internet flames. It’s pretty funny.

Just when you thought Twitter had become a basic broadcast tool that serves many purposes, we’re reminded that the service has fostered an actual community.

Twitter tonight overflowed with a meme that just about everyone can participate in and appreciate: #lessambitiousmovies. There have been more than 26,000 tweets using the hashtag in the last day, according to tweet indexer Topsy, and tonight the fad made the Twitter top trends list in the U.S.

This latest craze involves punning on an existing movie title to make it a little more ordinary, and appending the hashtag #lessambitiousmovies.

Some of my favorites: “The Devil Wears Zara,” “The Sound of Muzak” and “Saving Private Ryan 15% on his Auto Insurance by Switching him to GEICO.”

The most popular submission, at least according to Topsy, is “Being John Stamos” from Twitter user @jennyjohnsonHi5, with 225 retweets.

It doesn’t seem to be just the techies I follow that are playing along. Here’s celeb host Ryan Seacrest’s timely contribution: “Black Duck.”

Unlike the news items and celebrity names that often dominate Twitter trends, #lessambitiousmovies is actually sort of creative. But it’s far from the first hashtag game; another recent example was #fatindiebands, which also played off an easily replicable formula.

According to Twitter engineer Dana Contreras, the first #lessambitiousmovies tweet appears to have been “Scott Pilgrim vs The Room #lessambitiousfilms” on Jan. 3 from Toronto artist Rob McCallum, who has just 488 followers.

McCallum tweeted Wednesday evening, “I started it last night when I couldn’t sleep and it’s gotten right out of hand!…I don’t know how to feel! Cheers! I’m away to hide under some coats and plan my next move.”

Adam D’Angelo (pictured here) is too shy to subject himself to a BoomTown video–or perhaps too savvy–but he did agree to a sit-down for a short interview recently in a nondescript room in the Palo Alto, Calif., office building that houses Quora, the hot social answers start-up.

D’Angelo was, of course, the CTO and VP of Engineering at Facebook, as well as a prep school friend of the massive social networking site’s co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.

But D’Angelo left the company in mid-2008 and with former Facebooker Charlie Cheever launched the question-and-answer site in January, after much venture capitalist shoving to get on board.

With more than $10 million in funding from Benchmark Capital and a whole lot more hype to contend with, D’Angelo and his small team have been trying to move the site well beyond its Silicon Valley-tech-dudes forum to one in which a plethora of topics and memes thrive.

As was the initial goal, D’Angelo said the aim remains to become the best place to find pertinent information about just about anything.

“The Web is a great place for finding information, but a lot of information that is really important is actually in people’s heads,” said D’Angelo. “If I had to pick one, I would say Wikipedia is a good comparison [to Quora], but there is room for more.”

Not such an easy task, which is why D’Angelo believes most Q&A sites still come up short for users.

“Quora is a simple interface, but it is very complicated underneath,” he said. “Q&A sites in the past had good systems, but they did not add in identity, reputation and quality.”

The hope is that by adding those elements, as it develops, Quora can more correctly answer the questions people are looking for.

“We are really interested in info that changes quickly and in unstructured info,” said D’Angelo, which he noted was at the heart of a lot of searches and well beyond data that search engines such as Google (GOOG) provides.

And for answerers, D’Angelo believes, it also gives them a place to feature their expertise in a much easier way than if they used their own Web site.

“We think people have found that Quora is different from a blog, in that people now have to think up what they think people might want to know,” said D’Angelo. “Here, they are given the topics and the questions, which means they are hitting areas they already know their audience is interested in.”

Interestingly, D’Angelo said he has wanted to turn down the spotlight on the site in recent months, as he hopes to get Quora on as solid footing as possible.

“We want to make a product that markets itself and not because we are big in Silicon Valley,” he said. “So, we want to tone down anything that does not have to do with improving Quora itself.”

Perhaps one of the reasons is the competing effort by his old pal and employer at Facebook, which launched its own Answers product soon after D’Angelo did.

D’Angelo declined to answer any questions related to the obvious and decidedly odd competition, although it is clear the move irks him, since it was a longtime interest Facebook was never interested in until he was and Quora attracted a giant amount of attention.

“There were a lot of different things I could have done [when I left Facebook]. But I felt this was an area that was completely neglected compared to other stuff,” is all D’Angelo will say.

Luckily for Quora, so far the Facebook Answers product has not garnered a whole lot of buzz, although D’Angelo discounted that as being a sign of Quora’s success.

“This thing is up to us, whether we succeed or fail is something that only we can determine,” he said.

BoomTown will be honest in admitting I do not understand anything this group of interns is saying, but I like their gumption, especially the one with the skewed baseball cap.

Like the Hitler meme and others, the dancing soldiers of Afghanistan have set off a lot of military moves of the hip-swaying kind in online video.

Case in point, the latest one from a group of Israeli soldiers in the West Bank’s Hebron while on patrol with big and decidedly scary guns, using them as props in order to boogie to Ke$ha’s hit song “TiK ToK.”

There’s more controversy with this one, of course, given that it begins with a Muslim call to prayer in the background and those guns are part of the, well, fun. The incident is being investigated by the Israeli Defense Forces.

The holding hands move at the end was a nice touch though.

In any case, you apparently can’t stop the march of our armed forces.

Here’s the video, as well as the original video of the U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, shaking their considerable booty to Lady Gaga’s “Telephone”:

If you're one of the people who got a giggle out of the signage at the 14th Street stop, you're out of luck--turns out the folks who run New York City Transit use the Web, too.

If you’re the kind of person who uses “FML” in texts, IMs or tweets, then you may be the kind of person who is aware of a recent change to the New York City subway system, which resulted in this sorta-funny signage:

In the old days, this is the kind of thing that would have remained a semiobscure Internet meme/in-joke for quite some time.

But maybe there are no semiobscure Internet memes anymore–everything gets widely distributed, really fast. Wide enough and fast enough, in this case, for New York City Transit to change the signs within days. New version:

So that’s that! But, as I noted back in October when the Wisconsin Tourism Federation grappled with its own meme, Finite Matters Ltd. might still want to think about a new URL.

Rogue waves aren’t completely unheard of during surfing competitions in Northern California, but a foot of snow in Dallas? About as likely as Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz grilling Kara Swisher in front of a packed auditorium.

All right, it was a cafeteria packed with Yahoo (YHOO) employees, but still. Check out Kara’s write-up and video of the experience, but be warned: no embed of the official Yahoo video so far, so those of us who weren’t there have no idea (yet) about what sort of profanity ensued. We’ll keep you posted. Kara also took a look this week at the serialized drama that is MySpace. The latest episode, of course, is the firing of brand new CEO Owen Van Natta, who may or may not have wanted to leave anyway. An insider described the company to BoomTown as a hot mess, since it’s both “impossible to save and hard to give up on.” BoomTown started off the week with a couple of the more amusing takes on Google’s Super Bowl ad, “Paris Love”–now its own meme–which includes the search history of Tiger Woods and a different kind of Parisian story.

Walt recently fired up Windows 7 on a late-model Apple (AAPL) MacBook Pro, using both Parallels Desktop 5 and VMware Fusion 3. Not at the same time, although both have been updated to get the most out of Snow Leopard and Windows 7 and will run the two operating systems simultaneously on an Intel-powered Mac. The quick version is that Walt thinks Parallels is the better product. The version with all the logic and details is in this week’s Personal Technology. He also took time to answer some readers’ questions in Mossberg’s Mailbox about iPad batteries, zooming on text in Firefox, locating the calendar in the latest version of Windows Live Mail and feeling stuck between a Kindle and a Nook. In this week’s Mossberg Solution, Katie Boehret tested some stylishly small scanners and desktop printers: the Fujitsu’s ScanSnap S1300 and PlanOn System Solution’s PrintStik PS905ME. Not surprisingly, she found that style comes at a price with both gadgets.

In Digital Daily this week, John Paczkowski quoted Bill Gates’s underwhelming response to Apple’s iPad hoopla: “It’s a nice reader, but there’s nothing on the iPad I look at and say, ‘Oh, I wish Microsoft had done it.” Then he quoted Gates on his initial reaction to the iPod in 2004: “There’s nothing that the iPod does that I say, ‘Oh, wow, I don’t think we can do that.’” Apparently, Gates was much more forthcoming–with his own Microsoft (MSFT) execs, anyway–about iTunes in 2003 when he wrote in a memo that “Jobs has us a bit flat footed again….” Maybe admitting you have a problem really is the first step toward overcoming it. But then again, Zune as a second step is pretty much three steps back. John also dissected the buzz around Google Buzz this week, which, admittedly, wasn’t overwhelming, but it could still dovetail nicely with the search giant’s mobile strategies.

Jeff Bronikowski, formerly of Universal Music Group–the world’s biggest label–explained in a Billboard interview this week that the business of Big Music is doomed. But Peter Kafka is reserving judgment, at least until a few more music industry vets leave their jobs and weigh in publicly on the matter. Which is not at all the same thing as being optimistic; it’s just being realistic. It’s important to point out, though, that Google (GOOG) made Peter feel better this week about having Time Warner Cable (TWC) as his ISP, which could signal optimism, realism or something else entirely. Back on the music front, MediaMemo spoke with Veoh CEO Dmitry Shapiro and found that although it’s tempting to blame music behemoth Universal Music Group for the company’s demise, the Web start-up dug its own hole.

Here’s hoping for good sound bites for next weekend’s update and no need for mention of the weather. Stay tuned.

Publishers love to gripe about Google. But they almost never, ever, do the one thing that could put their money where their mouth is: Tell the search giant to leave them out of its results.

Publishers love to gripe about Google. But they almost never, ever, do the one thing that could put their money where their mouth is: Tell the search giant to leave them out of its results.

If you follow the media-versus-Google meme, you know this instinctively. But here are some numbers that spell it out: Of the 25,000-plus sources cataloged by Google News, “less than 100″ have opted out of the index, says Google’s Josh Cohen, who runs the service.

It is theoretically possible, of course, that more publications have opted out of Google’s main search results than out of the narrower Google News product. But I doubt it.

I also doubt that we’re going to see a significant number of publishers opt out of Google (GOOG) in the future, despite noisy saber-rattling from media outlets–most notably the Associated Press and News Corp. (NWS), which owns this site.

That said, if we are going to see some movement, it will be in the next few months. The AP, for instance, has a licensing deal with Google that runs out in the very near future.

I chatted Friday with Cohen (see video interview below) about the negotiations, and he gave me the polite equivalent of a “no comment.” But from what I can tell, the two sides remain pretty far apart on just about every point of contention.

Some other items of note from my conversation with Cohen:

A reminder that even publishers that put their stuff behind a paywall don’t want to cut themselves off from Google, which is absolutely true. Just ask News Corp.’s Wall Street Journal, which has gone through considerable effort and expense to boost its presence in search results.

Even though Google is already integrating “real-time” search results from Twitter (with Facebook and MySpace on the way), those results have not worked their way into Google News, and Cohen and his team are still trying to figure out the best way to do that.

I got an English-language explanation of the “Living Stories” project Google is working on with the Washington Post (WPO) and the New York Times (NYT).

Apologies: I still have not mastered vagaries of audio for Web video, or at least for our Web video publishing system. You’re probably going to want to turn the volume down during the introduction in this clip and then turn it back up once the interview starts.

The “Iran is Twitter’s defining moment” meme is losing momentum to the “Iran is YouTube’s defining moment” meme. But CNN has a different spin. Time Warner’s (TWX) cable news channel wants us to know that it isn’t dependent on either the micromessaging service or Google’s (GOOG) video site to report what’s happening in Iran–it has iReport.

For those of you who don’t watch CNN or visit CNN.com with any frequency, iReport is the news service’s attempt to create its own user-generated news hub. It’s supposed be to be able attract eyeballs on its own and in some cases, feed the Web site and the cable channel with free content donated by viewers.

To date, iReport is best known as the place where someone posted a bogus item about Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs. But CNN says it has been using the site heavily to augment its Iran coverage. From a press release it sent out earlier this week: “Since last week, we’ve received 4555 iReport submissions related to Iran–including more than 1600 this past Saturday and Sunday alone, and an additional 689 just yesterday. To date, 150 of the Iran-related iReports have been vetted and verified by CNN producers for use on CNN air or online–something the likes of YouTube or Flickr just aren’t equipped to do given their lack of newsgathering infrastructure.” (Yesterday CNN told me it added another 399 Iran-related iReports, and that seven had made it onto air. Presumably those numbers are still increasing.)

The breast-beating seems a bit much given that CNN, like every other cable network, has been happy to play up any bit of social media it uses in its Iran reporting. But the point about the vetting and verification is interesting.

I checked with CNN rep Jennifer Martin, who spelled out what that means: That CNN producers have contacted the people who sent in all of the Iran-related iReports it has featured on the network and at least verified that they are who they say they are. That in itself seems worthwhile, and maybe even worth bragging about.

Andy Plesser at Beet.TV has more, including an interview with CNN.com producer Lila King.

Here’s an example of some the “verified” footage the network has used so far. For some reason the play/pause/etc. controls don’t show up on these embedded videos, but I’ve been able to get them to start and stop by clicking on the image:

The twentysomething founder of 4chan.org won Time’s (TWX) title of “World’s Most Influential Person” despite accusations that the meme site’s fans hacked the online poll.

The founder, Christopher Poole, also known as “moot,” received 16.8 million votes. Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim was a distant runner up, with 2.3 million votes, followed by evangelist Rick Warren with 1.9 million. The rest of the top 10 included Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud, Google.org (GOOG) head Larry Brilliant, Attorney General Eric Holder, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, basketball star Kobe Bryant and Bolivian president Evo Morales.

While 4chan is one of the most popular sites for kick-starting viral videos and online trends like Rickrolling, with a self-proclaimed 3 million unique visitors a month, it’s unlikely that Mr. Poole tops the list of influential people in the lives of 16 million Time magazine readers.

Twitter's real-time search capability is a powerful tool--if you want to know what people are talking about on Twitter. If you want to know what people are interested in on the Web, though, it's a different story. It's a difference worth thinking about if you're an Internet company thinking about shelling out a lot of money for the start-up.

If Twitter really does sell out to Google or another suitor, you’ll hear plenty about the benefits of its real-time search capability and how it provides a window to the Web that no one else offers. It’s a meme that started up last summer when Twitter bought itself a search engine for some $15 million, and it’s been picking up ever since.

And Twitter search is indeed a powerful tool, which is why I use it as my homepage. But at the risk of being obvious, let’s spell out exactly what Twitter search does: It lets you track, in real-time, what people are talking about… on Twitter.

Which means that as fast as Twitter has been growing in the last year, it’s going to need to get much, much bigger before it gives you a real sense of what people are interested in on the Web. Right now, searching Twitter just gives you a sense of what a relatively small, self-selecting group of people are interested in.

Today’s example: The Amazon (AMZN) “glitch” story, which surfaced yesterday and been the top “trending” story on Twitter for the past 24 hours or so.

It’s of enormous interest to Twitter users, who sound off on the topic, using the keyword “amazonfail,” every couple of seconds. Outside of the Twitter hothouse, though, it’s not making much of a sound.

Last night, “Amazon rank” and “amazonfail” showed up at 14 and 38, respectively, on the Google Trends Top 100 list. But by this morning there was no trace of the story on the tracking tool.

Granted, this isn’t exactly apples and apples: Twitter is supposedly showing you what people are writing about, and Google (GOOG) shows you what they’re searching for. And Google’s own view of the Web is skewed, since it only values what people are searching for and linking to, not what they’re actually doing. But if Twitter was truly representative of the Web, you’d expect at least some overlap.

Could it get there someday? Conceivably. Twitter has a powerful hockey stick growth chart, and the four million U.S. users that comScore (SCOR) counted in February are almost certainly a low-ball guesstimate. More important, it’s up 1,000 percent from the year before. But that four million–or call it eight million, for argument’s sake–is still a footnote compared to Google’s 148.9 million during the same period.

If Twitter really does become both a commonplace verb and an activity–something average computer users do several times a day in the same way they use Web search–then the numbers above don’t matter, because Twitter will get there soon enough. But my hunch is that Twitter is going to permanently appeal to subset of the Web’s population (which includes professional self-promoters like me).

Which means that Twitter search will remain a niche product too. Valuable enough, particularly for brands that need to know what voluble people are saying about them. But hard to argue that it’s a must-have acquisition at any price. Or at least at the numbers that are floating around right now.

Chris Anderson's influential Web theorem says that endless choice equals unlimited demand. But a new study argues that most people want the same stuff--and no one wants that unpopular stuff, period.

Wired Editor’s Chris Anderson’s “Long Tail” theory–in a nutshell, that the Internet would allow a huge market of niche products to survive and thrive–is one of the more influential memes of the past few years. Which means it is also subject to backlash.

Earlier this year, the Harvard Business Review tried to refute Anderson in a well-argued piece. Now comes a set of British researchers trying to do the same thing. From the U.K. Times:

The idea that niche markets were the key to the future for internet sellers was described as one of the most important economic models of the 21st century when it was spelt out by Chris Anderson in his book, ‘The Long Tail,’ in 2006. He used data from an American online music retailer to predict that the internet economy would shift from a relatively small number of ‘hits’–mainstream products–at the head of the demand curve toward a ‘huge number of niches in the tail’.

A new study by Will Page, chief economist of the MCPS-PRS Alliance, the not-for-profit royalty collection society, suggests that the niche market is not an untapped goldmine and that online sales success still relies on big hits. They found that, for the online singles market, 80 per cent of all revenue came from around 52,000 tracks. For albums, the figures were even more stark. Of the 1.23 million available, only 173,000 were ever bought, meaning 85 per cent did not sell a single copy all year.”

Anderson, who has been a good sport about jousting with his critics on his blog, tells the Times that he needs to see more data before weighing in on this newest salvo. But I don’t have that compunction. My two cents–or at least, my two sort-of related points:

The Long Tail is a useful way to think about back catalogs. The Web means you can extend the reach of a product once it has had an initial run, and it allows aggregators like Amazon (AMZN) to make money by assembling lots of niche products at one storefront. It’s less useful for people who are creating albums, books, movies, etc., and need to get compensated for their work in the present tense.

One area where the Long Tail holds up just fine: Web publishing. The awesome power of Google (GOOG) means that stuff you publish once on the Internet will continue to find new audiences in the future, more or less without any additional effort on your part. Any Web publisher invariably finds that a large chunk of its audience tends to come to its site to consume stuff they produced weeks, months or years ago. Of course, consumers don’t want to pay anything in order to consume that stuff, which means it’s only useful if you can sell Web advertising against it. But that’s a different post.
