			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ordering from restaurants online can be a crapshoot. Sometimes you just don’t know if the menu is up to date, if &#8220;30-45 minutes&#8221; is an accurate delivery time, or whether the food you&#8217;ve ordered is what will actually arrive at your door.</p>
<p>One app maker is aiming to better that ordering process &#8212; by allowing customers to see in real time when a restaurant is running out of food or changing the menu. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111205/snapfinger-lets-you-peer-inside-the-restaurant-from-your-living-room/snapfinger1/" rel="attachment wp-att-150208"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/Snapfinger1-198x285.png" alt="" title="Snapfinger1" width="198" height="285" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-150208" /></a>  </p>
<p>Snapfinger, an Atlanta-based start-up that powers the online and mobile ordering of nationwide chains like Subway, Outback, California Pizza Kitchen and Boston Market, is updating its service so that it can be fully integrated into point-of-sale computer systems in restaurants.</p>
<p>Thanks to a new version of the app that is meant to serve &#8212; get it? <em>serve</em>? &#8212; both the restaurant employees and the customer who’s ordering the food from blocks away, the customer can now see menu changes and updates as the restaurant staff is entering them. So if there&#8217;s a special on the menu that night, the at-home diner can see it just as the people dining inside the restaurant can &#8212; and when the special runs out, the online or mobile menu will reflect that, too.  </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve realized that point-of-sale integration is crucial. As mobile ordering into restaurants gains momentum, the whole customer experience is really going to be dependent on systems like these,&#8221; Snapfinger’s CEO Jim Garrett said. He added that it is Snapfinger&#8217;s goal to be the &#8220;OpenTable of food ordering,&#8221; citing the popular reservation-making service that factors in available tables in real time as reservations are being made. Snapfinger currently powers online and mobile ordering for about 12,000 restaurants in the U.S.</p>
<p>Version 4.0 of the app, which is free, runs on iOS and Android devices. It also includes a map that gives directions to takeout restaurants, along with mobile prepayment features and the ability to have digital receipts sent to users’ iPhones and iPads.</p>
<p>While Snapfinger is spicing up its service &#8212; according to Garrett, it accounts for 70 percent of all U.S. restaurant-ordering applications &#8212; it still faces formidable competition from growing services like Seamless and GrubHub. Both sites have made acquisitions in recent months to expand their reach &#8212; Seamless bought MenuPages, which claims 35,000 menus in its database, while GrubHub acquired Dotmenu, which caters to college campus crowds and boosted GrubHub’s menu database significantly.  </p>
<p>Garrett pointed out that both of those services are focused mainly on local markets in various cities, while Snapfinger has a foothold in big, nationwide restaurant chains and also serves as a white-label app. </p>
<p>Still, in recognizing the growing importance of the local market, Garrett said Snapfinger also plans to try to get more local restaurants to use Snapfinger in the coming year. </p>

Deciding which restaurant to go to is a prerequisite for eating out, but most important is what you decide to put in your stomach. I&#8217;m a terrible annoyance when trying a new restaurant, as I pull out my phone to see what Foursquare and Yelp users say I should order. But social media is often right, and I don&#8217;t mind sharing a bite of the good stuff.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/Chewsy.jpg"><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/Chewsy-208x300.jpg" alt="" title="Chewsy" width="208" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1611" /></a>A bevy of dedicated apps and recently launched features for existing local apps now enable smartphone users to take pictures of memorable dishes and rate them or comment on them. Here&#8217;s a sampler of the current offerings:</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll get to the familiar names in a moment, but first is a <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/chewsy/id405437588?mt=8">new iPhone app</a> from a Seattle-based start-up called <a href="http://chewsy.com/">Chewsy</a> that creates a &#8220;social menu&#8221; (pictured at right) for any restaurant, based on user rankings. Created by Microsoft employees in their spare time, the app is focused on building out ratings and comments for menu items, and does not yet support pictures. Getting critical mass for menu items has got to be even harder than getting critical mass for restaurants, but the company has already launched in 11 markets.</p>
<p>At the beginning of this week, the geo-social crew at <a href="http://foursquare.com/">Foursquare</a> started <a href="http://blog.foursquare.com/2010/12/20/photos-and-comments/">giving users the ability to add photos to check-ins, tips and venues.</a> That has rolled out for both the iPhone and Android Foursquare apps, and includes photos from linked accounts on Instagram, Picplz and Foodspotting. The company said in a blog post, &#8220;Tips with photos changes everything. See dishes before ordering them, figure out if a venue looks fun, or easily identify a hard-to-find spot. More info = better exploration.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/YelpiPad.png"><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/YelpiPad-225x300.png" alt="" title="YelpiPad" width="225" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1612" /></a>Social media local reviews  leader Yelp put out its <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/yelp/id284910350?mt=8">first iPad app</a> (pictured at left) on Monday. In a <a href="http://officialblog.yelp.com/2010/12/this-holiday-season-yelp-elves-er-engineers-deliver-ipad-app.html">blog post</a> describing the launch, the company said the best part of the app is &#8220;our marquee feature: a fancy, schmancy new photo search results.&#8221;</p>
<p>The next day, <a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/">Urbanspoon</a> (the company behind that app where you shake to seredipitously find a place to eat) put out a <a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/blog/54/Going-Beyond-the-Shake.html">new release</a> that allows diners to submit a photo and review of a specific menu item directly from the app.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.foodspotting.com/">Foodspotting</a>, the leading pretty app for sharing pictures of and locating nearby food, just <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/sorayadarabi/status/17317418711908352">crossed</a> 500,000 downloads of its iPhone version on Tuesday, and said an Android beta would be out before the end of the year. It raised <a href="http://foodspotting.presslift.com/foodspotting-seedround">$750,000 in seed funding</a> last summer and just <a href="http://www.foodspotting.com/blog/posts/58-help-us-welcome-eat-ly-folks">acquired</a> a small food blogging start-up called Eat.ly.</p>
<p>The incredibly addictive <a href="http://instagr.am/">Instagram</a>, which is not focused on food but is a leading distributor of the latte still-life, <a href="http://instagr.am/blog/3/instagram-one-million-users">announced</a>on Tuesday its iPhone app had been downloaded one million times. It is currently raising funding.</p>
<p>Taking this whole concept in a different direction, NTT Communications <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6AB21020101112?utm_source=feedburner&#038;utm_medium=feed&#038;utm_campaign=Feed:+reuters/technologyNews+(News+/+US+/+Technology)">has said</a> it plans to release a healthy-eating app in Japan next month that will allow diners to take pictures of the food on their plate and report how many calories it contains.</p>
<p>Are food pictures just a feature? Sure, but you could also say food is just a feature of restaurants.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em>How do I convert songs in iTunes to plain MP3 files? I want to use them in another program that doesn&#8217;t recognize the AAC song format that iTunes prefers.</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>Assuming you are using the latest version of iTunes, for either Windows or Mac, first go into the General section of preferences, select &#8220;Import Settings&#8221; and then change to &#8220;Import Using MP3 Encoder.&#8221; Next, choose the AAC song you want to convert, go to the Advanced menu, and select &#8220;Create MP3 Version.&#8221; </p>
<p>Note that this works with songs you have imported into the AAC format from your CDs, or purchased from the iTunes store in unprotected AAC form. It won&#8217;t work with songs you bought in the days when iTunes song purchases were sold in a special copy-protected form of AAC. You can tell which type of song you have—purchased, but unrestricted; or copy-protected—by turning on the &#8220;Kind&#8221; column in your iTunes song listings. You do this from the View menu under &#8220;View options…&#8221;.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em>For years I have run a Norton Antivirus product and a Webroot antispyware product on my computers. For the 2011 version of the Norton product, installation requires uninstalling the Webroot program. This concerns me. Should I be nervous?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>I haven&#8217;t tested Norton 2011, so I don&#8217;t know for sure. But I do know that standalone antispyware products are less and less needed because security programs that once focused mainly on viruses, and ignored spyware, now are designed to protect against both. Even Webroot now sells a combined product.</p>

The latest team to try—Google, Logitech and Sony—has made an admirably bold effort, but, like others before, it has missed the mark, at least in its first effort.<br />

<p>Google TV—software built into hardware made by Logitech and Sony—is very different from competing products, such as Apple TV and Roku. Unlike the others, it aims to merge Web video and regular TV in one simple interface, via one box, with one easily usable controller. Also, unlike the others, it isn&#8217;t limited to just customized channels that bring specific Web-video services to the screen. It lets you browse to almost any website with video, and play it on the TV.</p>
<p>But, for now, I&#8217;d relegate Google TV to the category of a geek product, not a mainstream, easy solution ready for average users. It&#8217;s too complicated, in my view, and some of its functions fall short.</p>
<p>You can get Google TV in three ways. One is through a small, black $300 set-top box called the Logitech Revue. The second is through a special Sony Blu-ray player that costs $400. The third is through a Sony TV with built-in Internet that starts at $600. All are much costlier than the $99 Apple TV or the $60 Roku, but they offer more of the Internet&#8217;s video and make the effort to integrate it with cable or satellite programming.</p>

<p>Google TV cleverly piggybacks onto your existing cable or satellite box and can control it, at least to some extent. So there is no switching of inputs or remotes required, at least theoretically, to go between Internet video and regular TV—something that has plagued competing systems. But if you try to watch an Internet version of a show from a big network site or from Hulu on your Google TV device, it&#8217;s blocked, because the studios want to channel those shows through your cable or satellite box.</p>
<p>I tested Google TV using the Logitech Revue product, though I also met with Sony and had a briefing on their version, which looks and works pretty much the same. Setup took 12 steps and about 40 minutes and went pretty smoothly. It might have been worse if, as Logitech warns, your cable or satellite box requires you to install special cables to allow the Revue&#8217;s controller to operate it, or if you use a separate audio system. You need an HDTV with HDMI jacks on your TV and cable or satellite box to use the Logitech Revue.</p>
<p>The controller on the Revue is a wireless keyboard. Yes, that&#8217;s right, a keyboard, something you might find unattractive in the living room and no better than what you might use if you just plugged a PC into the TV.</p>
<p>Logitech does offer an optional &#8220;mini&#8221; controller for $130, but it is essentially a tinier keyboard with minuscule buttons and track pad crammed into a smaller space. It is more complex to operate than the big keyboard and much more complicated than a typical TV remote. Sony&#8217;s box comes with a similar, complex-looking mini-controller.</p>
<p>The key to Google TV, however, is the software, not the hardware. There is a home screen with a list of core functions, but, Google being Google, the principle activity is meant to be search. You just start typing what you want to see and Google TV brings up a list of hits from both regular TV and the Internet.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, in my tests, this search-and-viewing process was frustrating. For one thing, you only get a few results, and in my experience, they usually weren&#8217;t the right ones. When I was looking for the telecast of the Mark Twain Award ceremony for Tina Fey, all Google pointed me to were short clips on YouTube. I had to do a full Web search (a standard option in the brief list Google gives you) and then navigate through a standard Google results screen, which was unreadable at 10 feet without zooming in, to find the full show on the PBS website.</p>
<p>When I finally got to the PBS page, we watched the show, but it was noticeably pixelated on our large TV screen, even though my Internet connection is very fast.</p>
<p>In another case, I wanted to see the new Beatles-themed ads from Apple, but Google&#8217;s first results didn&#8217;t include them. The closest they came was an old fictional ad on the topic produced by a fan years ago. I manually navigated to Apple&#8217;s website, where the ads were prominent, but found that Google TV doesn&#8217;t support QuickTime, Apple&#8217;s video format. (The company says it plans to do so in a future release.) I knew the ads were also on YouTube, so I went there and eventually found them, with some effort, but they stuttered on playback.</p>

<p>I was similarly frustrated by finding and using regular TV shows from my cable box. Unless you have a box from Dish network, Google TV can&#8217;t search in your recorded shows, or allow you, when it finds a show coming up, to set it to record. You&#8217;ll likely switch to your regular remote to do those things, which defeats Google&#8217;s aim of integration.</p>
<p>Also confusing is Google TV&#8217;s home screen, which has overlapping categories. For instance, there is a Queue, for some of your favorite podcasts and sites, and a Bookmarks for others. There is an Applications menu that takes you to specially designed apps that spare you from navigating the regular Web, such as the Netflix video service or Pandora Radio. But there is also a Spotlight category that has customized, simplified websites that, to an average user, amount to the same thing. And, so far, you can only search for the names of most applications, not any content they contain.</p>
<p>Google plans to add the Android Market of third-party apps to Google TV. That could be good, adding more functionality. But it also risks adding more complexity, unless Google redesigns the interface.</p>
<p>Google TV has its strong points. The integration of Web video and regular TV, while flawed, is a smart move. There is even a picture-in-picture feature that lets you keep watching TV while, say, using Twitter or any other Web function. And the Logitech box has an optional $150 camera that allows you to make free video calls. It worked well in my one test. Logitech also allows you to control the Revue from an iPhone or Android app.</p>
<p>But this is a 1.0 product. For now, I&#8217;d suggest average users dying to watch Internet video on a TV, either plug in a PC or use one of the wireless systems, like Intel&#8217;s Wi-Di, that wirelessly beam video from a PC to a TV. Or, you could wait for Google TV to improve.</p>

<p>Now comes the backpedaling. <em>Of course</em>.</p>
<p>Today, well-known Silicon Valley angel investor <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/26/ron-conway-would-like-to-clarify-his-nuclear-attack-on-fellow-angels/">Ron Conway sent a missive</a> to his favorite missive publisher, TechCrunch.</p>
<p>It was a &#8220;clarification&#8221; of his earlier &#8220;leaked&#8221; email to Super Angels in which he lambasted them for a controversial dinner at Bin 38 in San Francisco.</p>
<p>At which one of his partners at SV Angel Partners was in attendance. At Conway&#8217;s insistence, as it turns out.</p>
<p><em>Oops.</em></p>
<p>Also in the <em>say-what</em> department, a <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/24/techcrunch-disrupt-will-not-be-about-angelgate/">blog post in TechCrunch</a> today about how its TechCrunch Disrupt conference was not going to be all AngelGate read:</p>
<p>&#8220;The fact that some of them may or may not have had discussions that may or may not have been inappropriate is, in the end, a sidenote.&#8221;</p>
<p>BoomTown can&#8217;t mock that epic Silicon Valley statement any more than it does all on its own.</p>
<p>But, after the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100924/boomtown-decodes-ron-conways-super-angel-super-fit-so-you-dont-have-to/">first decoding</a>, here is the final one for Conway&#8217;s words, and then it&#8217;s time to leave this circus to the panel tomorrow:</p>

<p>I would like to clarify some confusion from that email.</p>

<p>Apple (AAPL) last night released a new beta of the iPhone 4.0 OS featuring a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/18/iphone-os-4-0-beta-4-includes-atandt-tethering-option/">&#8220;set up tethering&#8221; option in the Network Settings menu</a>. Tap it and a panel appears directing users either to call AT&#038;T or visit the carrier&#8217;s Web site to activate the feature.</p>
<p>Has AT&#038;T (T) overcome its anxiety about the long-promised feature, which it feared might exponentially increase network traffic and undermine sales of air cards? Certainly appears that way, though it’s worth noting that the carrier was still managing expectations for tethering as recently as last month. Asked in April about the feature’s status by Engadget, AT&#038;T hinted at further delays by trotting out its now standard we’re-worried-about-network-performance-issues excuse:</p>
<p>&#8220;We understand that there is great interest in tethering but cannot provide any details at this time,&#8221; <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/28/iphone-tethering-on-atandt-still-waiting-on-better-network-perform/">the company said</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;We know that iPhone users love their devices and mobile broadband, and that they&#8217;re likely to embrace tethering just as they have other features and apps&#8211;by using it a lot. iPhone tethering has the potential to exponentially increase traffic, and we need to ensure that we&#8217;re able to deliver excellent performance for the feature&#8211;over and above the increases in data traffic we&#8217;re already seeing&#8211;before we will offer the feature.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course, AT&#038;T has been pumping a lot of money into <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100128/att-network/">wireless network and back-haul improvements</a> this year, so perhaps it has reached performance targets. Certainly, the inclusion of an AT&#038;T tethering menu in the latest iPhone OS beta suggests as much. Still, it is a beta, not a gold release, and there&#8217;s always a chance it could be de-featured prior to its official debut.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>TiVo is the most famous third-party set-top box for your TV. The company popularized the idea of digital video recording and, in recent years, also has added to its devices the ability to deliver some Internet video content to the TV screen.</p>
<p>But TiVo is being squeezed. Cable and satellite companies now offer boxes with DVR capabilities. And other tech companies are rolling out competing set-top boxes to get Internet video to televisions.</p>

<p>TiVo (TIVO) is responding with a new model, the TiVo Premiere, that aims to seamlessly blend programming from conventional TV and the Internet. It is slimmer, has a slicker user interface and holds more recorded programming than earlier models—45 hours of high-definition programs, up from 20 hours in the prior model, the TiVo HD. A more expensive version of the Premiere, the XL, has the same new software and holds 150 hours of HD shows.</p>
<p>I have been testing the new Premiere, and it worked as advertised, with conventional cable programming and with the available Internet sources TiVo (TIVO) supports. But, in my tests, it showed some flaws and, in my view, it doesn&#8217;t go nearly far enough in tapping the Internet. </p>
<p>Like prior TiVos, I&#8217;d rate the Premiere as better than the standard cable-company-supplied boxes I&#8217;ve seen. But, if you already own a recent-model TiVo, I don&#8217;t believe the Premiere justifies an upgrade, unless you need the greater built-in storage.</p>
<p>The TiVo Premiere goes on sale Sunday at Best Buy (BBY) stores for $300, plus a monthly fee of $13, or an annual or lifetime payment plan ranging from $129 for a year of service to $399 for the life of the device. The Premiere XL costs $500, plus the same fees. Both will be available Monday at <a href="http://www.tivo.com/">tivo.com</a>.</p>
<p>TiVo calls the Premiere &#8220;the One Box,&#8221; because it better integrates regular TV and Internet content. However, it actually has no additional Internet services compared with recent TiVo models. It allows you to get movies, TV shows and videos from YouTube, Amazon (AMZN), Netflix (NFLX) and Blockbuster (BBI), which are available on competing set-top boxes. It also includes a number of online music and photo services.</p>
<p>The company says a couple of added Internet services will be available later this year. These include the Pandora streaming music service and a widget system displaying things like news, stock prices and Twitter updates. However, the widgets won&#8217;t allow you to interact with Twitter and won&#8217;t be viewable while you&#8217;re watching TV or Internet video. </p>
<p>The biggest changes in the new Premiere involve the user interface. The TiVo Central screens, where you find and manage recorded shows and other content, are now presented in high definition and wide screen. This allows more menus on a single screen. The screen containing your recorded shows is now called My Shows instead of Now Playing.</p>
<p>You also can now watch TV in a small window while you&#8217;re on the menu screens, and there is a 30-second skip button on the remote.</p>

<p>Also, a new Browse function lets you look for programming without typing search terms, by scrolling through colorful icons that include &#8220;collections&#8221; of related content, such as Oscar or Emmy winners.</p>
<p>Both Search and Browse now integrate regular TV shows with Internet content. If you start typing letters into the search box, TiVo will respond not only with TV shows that match, but with movies and TV shows that you can download from Web sources. You can also easily find YouTube clips related to a favorite show.</p>
<p>A new Discovery Bar of icons appears across the top of the Tivo Central screens. It&#8217;s filled with icons of TV shows and available Web content TiVo thinks you might like.</p>
<p>But there are some big downsides to the Premiere. You can&#8217;t watch videos on popular sites like Hulu (owed in part by News Corp., which owns The Wall Street Journal and its Web sites), <a href="http://www.cbs.com/">CBS.com</a>, blogs or news Web sites. This may be partly due to media-company restrictions, not TiVo&#8217;s shortcomings, but it means the Premiere omits vast sources of Internet video.</p>
<p>The new HD interface was slower than the old standard one in my tests, with frequent delays, even in scrolling through a list of recorded shows. TiVo says this is a bug being fixed.</p>
<p>In addition, I found the Discovery Bar a distraction, cluttering the menu screens, with no way to turn it off unless you revert to the old interface (a buried option.) This is partly because TiVo hopes to sell ads on the bar.</p>
<p>Finally, the new HD interface isn&#8217;t available when watching live TV. You have to constantly bounce between the new and old software designs.</p>
<p>All in all, TiVo Premiere looks incomplete. It seems more like a platform for a future set of offerings TiVo hopes one day to have, rather than a way to deliver new content right now.</p>

<p>The new iPhone release is a bit of a yawner, resolving an issue that caused some third-party applications to have difficulty launching, improving the accuracy of reported battery level on the iPhone 3G S and <a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4013">fixing some security issues</a>.</p>
<p>The Nexus One update is quite a bit meatier. It adds Google Goggles to the All Apps menu, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/18/select-nexus-one-users-complaining-of-touchscreen-calibration-3/">improves 3G connectivity</a> (or promises to) and, significantly, enables multitouch in the phone&#8217;s Browser, Gallery and Maps applications. Seems the Nexus One dev team got over whatever aversion it had to pinch-to-zoom.</p>
<p>This update is being rolled out gradually, so some Nexus One owners may not see it until later this week.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s about the software, stupid. While all sorts of commentators were focusing on how much Apple&#8217;s new $499 iPad tablet computer looks like an oversized iPhone, the key to whether it can be the first multi-function tablet to win wide public acceptance probably lies in whether consumers perceive it as a suitable replacement for a laptop in key scenarios. And that, in my view, depends heavily on the software and services that flow through its handsome little body.</p>
<p>I have only spent a short time hands-on with the iPad&#8211;too short to fully run it through its paces and formally review it yet. But, after attending the rollout of the new device today, and trying out some of its features for myself, I have some first impressions.</p>

<p>Apple CEO Steve Jobs positioned the iPad as belonging to a new category of device between the smartphone and the laptop (since the netbook, in his view and mine, is really just a small, cheap laptop). But, as the demos unfolded, I kept thinking it was more like a hybrid of the two. </p>
<p>It uses the iPhone&#8217;s basic user interface and physical design. But, taking advantage of a 9.7&#8243; screen and a fast Apple-designed processor, the iPad adds some user interface elements and functionality that aren&#8217;t available&#8211;or at least typical&#8211;on smart phones, but look more like computer software. For instance, its photo program works more like iPhoto on a Mac than the photo app on an iPhone, and it will be available with a touch version of Apple&#8217;s iWork productivity suite, which is Apple&#8217;s take on Microsoft Office. This is a much more powerful program than the phone-based office suites for the iPhone or BlackBerry, and Apple (AAPL) is only charging $30 for it.</p>

<p>Also, Apple has rewritten most of the core iPhone apps so they look more like, and have more of the features of, Mac or PC programs. But they aren&#8217;t mere clones of full computer apps. For instance, many forego standard menus for clever overlays and sidebars that work more naturally with the iPad&#8217;s multi-touch interface. Other app developers can do this, too. But, even if they don&#8217;t, the company said the iPad will run most of the current 140,000 iPhone apps, either in a small window on the screen, or in a full-screen mode. That&#8217;s a huge plus for a new device.</p>

<p>Mr. Jobs said after the onstage program ended that he sees the iPad&#8217;s user interface as a fuller expression of the one on the iPhone, which had been limited by screen real estate.</p>
<p>And, although the reported video and music streaming services were nowhere to be seen at this preview, Mr. Jobs did offer a taste of how the iPad could deliver content, beyond simply downloads from the iTunes store. He showed off a new e-book reader app with built-in online book store that, visually at least, blew away the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle, even if it seemed to lack all of the Kindle&#8217;s features and may have a smaller catalog. Representatives of the New York Times (NYT) showed an iPad digital version of their newspaper that seemed vastly more usable than the clumsy version now on the Kindle and its ilk.</p>
<p>So, the iPad is more than just a giant iPod Touch or iPhone, even though it looks like one. But the question is, will that be enough to get consumers to shell out for it, and make it part of their daily lives? Or will it be a niche product, like Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Tablet PC or Mr. Jobs&#8217; own Apple TV?</p>

<p>On the plus side, the device is handsome, feels comfortable and solid to hold, and has all that beautiful software built in. Oh, and it&#8217;s amazingly low-priced for an Apple product, with that modest $499 price tag for a base version with 16 gigabytes of memory and Wi-Fi, but no cell phone data connectivity. (A fully loaded model with 64 gigabytes, Wi-Fi and a no-contract 3G cellular data plan is $829, and there are variations in between.)</p>
<p>It also boasts a decent 10 hours of battery life, and Mr, Jobs told me after the event that, for some functions, like playing video and music, the battery should last even longer. </p>
<p>But there are minuses. First, since it&#8217;s too big to go in a pocket, people might perceive it as just another thing to carry around, despite the fact that it&#8217;s only a half inch thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds. It also lacks a common and popular laptop feature&#8211;a web cam. So, it can&#8217;t be used for video chats or for the creation of web videos.</p>

<p>Also, the carrier for the iPad&#8217;s 3G plan is the deeply unpopular AT&#038;T&#8211;there were groans and boos among Mr. Jobs&#8217; otherwise excited audience when this was announced. AT&#038;T is offering bargain prices for iPad data service compared to what it charges laptop owners. But its network is overwhelmed in many big cities and many iPhone lovers, who are strong candidates to buy an iPad, curse the carrier daily.</p>
<p>Finally, while it&#8217;s too early for me to say without lots of testing, the size of the iPad&#8217;s virtual keyboard may be a liability. I found it almost too wide for thumb typing, and a colleague who&#8217;s a whiz at touch typing and tried it briefly found it awkward to type on. Apple is offering an auxiliary physical keyboard that docks with, and charges, the iPad. But you won&#8217;t want to lug that around.</p>
<p>Still, the software looked impressive, and that could help Steve Jobs do the one thing even he has never done in an amazing career: get the public to love not just a better version of an existing type of gadget, but a whole new category of gadget.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Google this week is taking two dramatic steps to try to catapult devices using its Android mobile operating system into stronger competition with Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry in the battle for supremacy in the super-smartphone category.</p>
<p>First, the search giant is bringing out a beautiful, sleek new Android phone, the Nexus One, built to its specifications. Second, it has decided to offer the new phone—and future models—to consumers directly, unlocked, via the Web, and then invite multiple carriers to compete to sell service plans and subsidized versions of the hardware.</p>

<p>One carrier is ready to support the Nexus One on day one: the U.S. arm of T-Mobile, a longstanding Google (GOOG) partner. The new Google Phone, built by HTC of Taiwan, will cost $529 unlocked direct from Google, at google.com/phone. It will cost $179 from T-Mobile online with a two-year contract that will set you back $79.99 a month.</p>
<p>Verizon Wireless (VZ) in the U.S. and Vodafone (VOD) in Europe will sell the Nexus One eventually at subsidized prices that haven&#8217;t yet been announced. All of this will take place on a Google-hosted Web site, a much easier way to buy a phone and service than is typical today, and one that promises to further weaken the power of the carriers.</p>
<p>The company also plans to sell the costlier, unsubsidized version to consumers in the U.K., Hong Kong and Singapore immediately. Like Americans who buy this unlocked version, these customers will have to purchase carrier service separately, something they should be able to obtain right away by just buying and inserting a SIM card from a carrier with compatible technology. (This initial unlocked phone won&#8217;t work with Verizon or Sprint in the U.S., nor on AT&#038;T&#8217;s 3G network, only the latter&#8217;s slower network.) </p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Nexus One for a couple of weeks and I like it a lot. It&#8217;s the best Android phone so far, in my view, and the first I could consider carrying as my everyday hand-held computer. It is a svelte gray device with a 3.7-inch, high-resolution screen; a thin strip of buttons underneath for home, back, menu and search; and a trackball.</p>
<p>The Nexus One finally has the right combination of hardware and software to give Android a champion that might attract more people away from their iconic iPhones and BlackBerrys. It has a larger screen than Apple&#8217;s phone, and is a bit thinner, narrower and lighter—if a tad longer. And it boasts a better camera and longer talk time between battery charges.</p>
<p>Also, because it will be available on the large, well-regarded Verizon 3G network, the Nexus One could tempt American iPhone users, tired of problems with AT&#038;T (T), to switch.</p>
<p>The iPhone still retains some strong advantages. It boasts well over 100,000 third-party apps—around 125,000 by some unofficial estimates—versus around 18,000 for the Android platform. And it has vastly more memory for storing apps, so you can keep many more of them on your phone at any one time. On the Nexus One, only 190 megabytes of its total 4.5 gigabytes of memory is allowed for storing apps. On the $199 iPhone, nearly all of the 16 gigabytes of memory can be used for apps.</p>
<p>In fact, the $199 iPhone 3GS has roughly four times as much user-accessible memory out of the box, though the memory on the Nexus One can be expanded via memory cards. Apple also has a more-fluid user interface, with multitouch gestures for handling photos and Web pages.</p>
<p>As for the BlackBerry, its user interface looks older and clumsier with each passing day, but it has a beautiful physical keyboard many users love, while the Nexus One has a virtual, onscreen keyboard.</p>

<p>The Nexus One is packed with its own tricks. Its version of Android is essentially the same improved edition as the one that appeared on the Motorola (MOT) Droid back in November. But it has a few new features, including an experimental dictation capability. You just press a microphone icon on the keyboard and start talking, and the words appear. In my tests, this worked only adequately at best, and very poorly at worst, but Google insists it will learn and improve.</p>
<p>The phone also has handsome new visual features, including &#8220;live wallpaper,&#8221; with waving grass or pulsing colored lines; and a new zooming effect when you want to view icons that aren&#8217;t on your main screens. In addition, you can now view miniatures of your five main screens to help you navigate to the one you want.</p>
<p>The Nexus One also has all the key software features introduced in the Droid, including free turn-by-turn voice-prompted navigation.</p>
<p>In my tests, overall, the Nexus One worked very well. The latency I had seen in earlier Android phones is gone, due to a slicker version of the operating system and faster chips. The phone feels good in the hand and the screen is magnificent, with much greater resolution than the iPhone&#8217;s. </p>
<p>I like very much the way social-networking information, including status messages, is integrated into the contacts app. One tap on a person&#8217;s picture in Contacts lets you quickly choose whether to call, email or message her, or map her address—all without opening the contact card itself.</p>
<p>I also liked the pictures and videos I was able to take with the five-megapixel camera and flash, which I preferred to my iPhone&#8217;s camera. You can even view a photo slideshow or listen to music when the phone is in the optional desktop dock.</p>
<p>But there are some downsides to the Nexus One. Like all Android phones, it relies too much, in my view, on menus that create extra steps, including some menus that have a built-in &#8220;more&#8221; button to display a secondary menu of choices.</p>
<p>I also found the four buttons etched into the phone&#8217;s bottom panel sticky and hard to press. In addition, although the Nexus One claims seven hours of talk time versus five hours for the iPhone, most of its battery-life claims for other functions are weaker than Apple&#8217;s. </p>

<p>For instance, Google claims just 6.5 hours of Wi-Fi Web use per charge, versus nine for the iPhone, and 20 for music playback versus 30. Google claims this is because, unlike Apple, it allows the simultaneous use of third-party apps, which can drain the battery faster.</p>
<p>In addition, the Nexus One, and other Android devices, still pale beside the iPhone for playing music, video and games. The apps available for these functions aren&#8217;t nearly as sophisticated as on the Apple devices.</p>
<p>Finally, the iPhone is still a better apps platform. Not only are there more apps, but, in my experience, iPhone apps are generally more polished and come in more varieties. </p>
<p>But, with its fresh phone and bold business model, Google is taking Android to a new level, and that should ramp up the competition in the super-smartphone space.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>&#8216;Tis almost the night before Christmas, and plenty of households are hoping Santa will slide down the chimney with a new computer in his pack. For longtime Windows users who receive new Apple (AAPL) computers, the unfamiliarity of the Mac operating system could leave them pining for their old PC.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve put together a quick and dirty guide for new Apple users that explains some of the ways the Mac operating system differs from Windows. It&#8217;s true: The way you&#8217;ll quit programs is different, the keyboards are set up a little differently and even the mouse is different. But once you adjust to these changes, you&#8217;ll be fine. Here&#8217;s some help:</p>

<h5 class="subhed">Key to the Keyboard</h5>
<p>Your keyboard is missing a Backspace button, so just use the Delete button, which is set up by default to work as the Backspace button does on a Windows keyboard. </p>
<p>If you want to delete forward on a Mac laptop or a new iMac, hold the Function key (FN) while pressing Delete. And for keyboard shortcuts like pressing Control+C to copy or Control+V to paste on a Windows keyboard, use the Command key, which has a flower-like symbol, in place of Control. Likewise, use the Option key rather than Alt to type special characters.</p>
<p>If you miss Control+Alt+Delete, you can end frustratingly slow applications on the Mac by pressing Command+Option+Escape to force programs to quit.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Mousing Around</h5>
<p>The mouse on a desktop Mac looks like it has only one button, and the trackpad on most Mac laptops has no visible buttons at all—the whole pad is a single, large button. These designs send people who usually use two-button mice into a tizzy about how to right click.</p>
<p>Never fear, right click is still near! On Mac laptops, right click by placing two fingers down on the trackpad (it&#8217;s easiest with your pointer and middle fingers) and click the trackpad with another finger (like your thumb). New MacBooks also will right click when you place two fingers on the trackpad and press down. Using a one-button Apple mouse, just press Control and then click to see the same right-click functionality. On the Mighty Mouse, enable right-click functionality in System Preferences, then just touch where the right-click button should be and it will work. </p>
<p>If you&#8217;re sick of these new shortcuts, just plug in a mouse with a real right-click button and it will likely work on the Mac.</p>
<p>Scroll up or down on any screen by placing two fingers anywhere on the trackpad and motioning up or down. New MacBooks have a large, glass trackpad that responds to iPhone-like multi-touch gestures like pinching to zoom in or out on a screen. Four fingers on the trackpad initiate one of three gestures: Swiping up clears everything off the screen to show the desktop; swiping left or right opens the application switcher view so you can select which application you want; swiping down launches Exposé, which shows all opened windows.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Maximize, Close, Quit</h5>
<p>In Windows, users can hit one button in the top right corner of each window to maximize the window; Macs have a small green circle in the top left corner that makes a window larger, but not maximized, so this can be irritating. </p>
<p>Windows lets users close an application by hitting the &#8220;X&#8221; in the top-right corner; the Mac version of this is a small red dot in the top left, but clicking it only closes a window rather than quitting the application. To do that, you&#8217;ll need to press Command+Q or choose to quit from the application menu at the top left of the screen.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Where&#8217;s My Stuff?</h5>
<p>Rather than opening My Computer as you would on a Windows PC, double click on the desktop icon representing your hard drive to see all files, folders, applications and software programs. Spotlight, located in the top right corner of all screens, can be used to search for anything on your Mac. The Dock, located by default at the bottom of the screen, replaces the taskbar to hold applications, folders and files.Items can be dragged into the dock for quick access. Applications are located on the left side of the Dock; Stacks are on the right and these enable instant folder access from the Dock.Two built-in Stacks come pre-loaded for Documents and Downloads.</p>
<p>The Apple menu, represented with a small apple icon in the top left of any screen, works like parts of the Windows Start menu.</p>
<p>System Preferences in the Mac Dock works much like the Control Panel on a Windows PC. Here, you can change your screensaver, desktop picture, mouse and keyboard settings, energy-saving options, parental controls and network setup. </p>
<p>An optional Mac version of Microsoft Office runs Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs that are compatible with Office files from Windows PCs. Instead of Outlook, Microsoft (MSFT) includes in Mac Office a program with similar functions called Entourage. Macs come out of the box with Apple-produced programs that include Mail, Address Book and iCal. Mail works with a range of email services. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Where&#8217;s Internet Explorer?</h5>
<p>Instead of Internet Explorer, Apple comes loaded with its own Web browser called Safari, represented in the Dock by a blue and red compass. Browsers like Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox or Google (GOOG) Chrome will work on the Mac if you want to download and install them, but Internet Explorer still runs only on Windows.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Ejecting Hurts</h5>
<p>On a Windows PC, anything inserted into the computer—from memory cards to USB flash drives—can be pulled out almost anytime with no repercussions. On a Mac, you must first eject these items before you yank them out. Ejecting can be done by dragging the icon representing that item from the desktop into the Trash, Apple&#8217;s version of the Windows Recycling Bin, or by selecting an Eject button beside its name. If you delete something on your Mac, it&#8217;s tossed into the Trash, and an option in Trash will empty it just as you can empty the Recycling Bin in Windows. Macs offer a Secure Empty Trash command in the Finder that securely deletes files so no part of them can be recovered. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Ask at the Store </h5>
<p>If you buy a new Mac, Apple retail stores will recycle your old computer free, and if you buy Apple&#8217;s $99-a-year One to One membership, you can take your PC into an Apple retail store to have its data transferred to the Mac or to get personal tutorials. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Amazon&#8217;s Kindle has been the king of the nascent, much-hyped, category of wireless e-readers since it came out in 2007. Now, numerous companies are determined to challenge the Kindle with dedicated, mass-market gadgets for reading digital books and periodicals. The latest, and potentially most important, of these is a contender called the Nook, produced by the giant bookstore chain Barnes &#038; Noble Inc. (BKS), which started shipping it this week.</p>
<p>The two devices look very similar, but have key differences in capabilities, user interface and polish. Overall, after testing the Nook for about a week, I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s as good as the Kindle, at least not yet. At launch, the Nook has the feel of a product with great potential that was rushed to market before it was fully ready.</p>

<p>Like the latest standard-size Kindle, which came out earlier this year, the Nook is a roughly 8-inch by 5-inch, ivory-colored plastic tablet that costs $259 and connects wirelessly to an online store. The two devices have essentially identical reading screens, 6 inches when measured diagonally, that allow for only monochrome text and gray-scale graphics, not color. Both come with two gigabytes of internal memory, enough to hold about 1,500 digital books.</p>
<p>Nook&#8217;s most obvious difference from Kindle is that it also boasts a second, smaller color screen beneath the main reading screen. This touch screen is used for navigating and for typing via an on-screen keyboard when performing searches or adding notes to books. Also, when the touch screen is dark, it can be swiped to turn pages instead of using the physical page-turning buttons at the sides of the main screen.</p>
<p>The competing Kindle (formerly called the Kindle 2, but now back to just Kindle) uses a joystick, Menu and Home buttons, and pop-up menus on the main screen for navigating. It has a physical keyboard below the screen for typing and can turn pages only using physical buttons.</p>

<p>Also, unlike the Kindle, the Nook lets you lend certain digital books to others for a limited period, an innovation that removes one of the most common complaints about buying books electronically instead of on paper.</p>
<p>Another big difference: Nook claims a catalog of just over one million digital books, versus 389,000 for the Kindle. But this is somewhat misleading, because over half of the Nook catalog is made up of free out-of-copyright titles published before 1923, the vast majority of which are likely to be of little interest to average readers. Barnes &#038; Noble refuses to say how many modern commercial titles it offers, or even whether it has more or fewer of these than Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>Amazon says it already has nearly 20,000 of the most popular such older books available and plans to add hundreds of thousands more in the coming months, to bring its total selection to more than one million.</p>
<p>Amazon also offers well over 100 newspapers and magazines and 7,500 blogs. Barnes &#038; Noble says it will have about 45 periodicals in the coming weeks, but no blogs.</p>

<p>Both devices offer downloads of most best-sellers, but in a random, unscientific test I performed using print books from around my house, I found Amazon&#8217;s commercial e-book catalog superior. Barnes &#038; Noble lacked digital versions of two recent historical biographies I own, and had no digital editions of the works of one of my favorite contemporary mystery writers, Donna Leon. Amazon had all these books in Kindle editions. Barnes &#038; Noble says titles like these are being added.</p>
<p>During my tests, I found the Nook slower, more cumbersome to use and less polished than the Kindle. I ran into various crashes and bugs. And, while the Kindle&#8217;s navigation system isn&#8217;t exactly world class, it ran circles around the Nook&#8217;s, despite the great possibilities offered by the latter&#8217;s use of the touch screen.</p>
<p>The Nook may be wonderful one day, but, as of today, it&#8217;s no match for the Kindle, despite advantages such as lending, because it&#8217;s more annoying to use.</p>
<p>For instance, the Nook constantly delayed taking me to books while the main screen displayed a message that said &#8220;formatting.&#8221; Its standard practice is to open books you select not at the actual start of the book, but at a description of the book. Turning pages inside books was slower than on the Kindle. Looking up a word in the built-in dictionary, a quick process on the Kindle, was far harder on the Nook. Even swiping the touch screen to turn pages would suddenly stop working for periods of time.</p>
<p>The good news for those who have ordered a Nook, which is currently sold out, is that its software can be updated, and Barnes &#038; Noble is promising to fix the problems, starting with a wirelessly delivered patch next week that it says will improve the speed a bit, get you closer to the start of the book, and repair some of the bugs. </p>
<p>Two things are worth noting here. First, I also criticized the design of the original Kindle and the original Sony (SNE) e-reader, both of which have improved in subsequent iterations. (Sony, which was in this market early, is promising to release its first wireless e-reader later this month.)</p>
<p>Second, the entire e-reader market is still in its infancy. The lack of color in books and periodicals alone is a huge drawback. One day, I suspect both of these products will look like a 1996 Palm (PALM) PDA does compared with an Apple (AAPL) iPhone. </p>
<p>The Nook is a bit shorter and narrower than the Kindle, but it is an ounce heavier and significantly thicker. It has a cleaner look, because the bezel around the screen is narrower and there is no physical keyboard. The touch screen adds a dash of color, though it often goes dark to save battery life.</p>
<p>Like the Kindle, the Nook has built-in cellular connectivity with no monthly charges. But it also adds Wi-Fi, which is free at Barnes &#038; Noble stores, though mostly unusable at other commercial hotspots, because the Nook lacks a Web browser that would allow you to log in. The Kindle has a crude Web browser, but no Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>Speaking of battery life, the Nook&#8217;s is worse than the Kindle&#8217;s. It claims about 10 days of typical use with wireless off, and just two days with wireless on. In my week of tests, with wireless on constantly, I had to charge it three times. Amazon rates the Kindle at 14 days of typical use with wireless off and seven days with wireless on, which squares with my own Kindle experience.</p>
<p>The Nook beats the Kindle in a few areas. Lending is a key one, though only about half of  the commercial titles are eligible for lending, you can lend each one only once to a given person, and loans expire after two weeks. In my tests, lending worked OK after a couple of false starts.</p>
<p>Another is that Barnes &#038; Noble takes advantage of its stores. In addition to getting free Wi-Fi, Nook owners who enter a Barnes &#038; Noble store can read books on their Nooks for free, and get help from staff members.</p>
<p>Unlike the Kindle, the Nook also has a slot for expandable memory cards and a replaceable battery. Barnes &#038; Noble also has companion PC, Mac, iPhone and BlackBerry software for reading e-books, even if you don&#8217;t own a Nook. Amazon has such software, so far, only for the iPhone and PC.</p>
<p>But, while Amazon will synchronize your last page read if you switch from reading a book on one device to using another, Barnes &#038; Noble lacks that capability yet, though it says it will have it soon.</p>
<p>One more thing: The latest standard-size Kindle allows wireless book purchasing in multiple countries. The Nook does so only in the U.S.</p>
<p>My recommendation on the Nook is to wait, even if you prefer its features to the Kindle&#8217;s. It&#8217;s not fully baked yet. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook is rolling out new privacy settings that it <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090701/facebooks-new-privacy-policy-share-everything-with-everyone/">first began talking about in July</a>. The company is holding a press conference this morning to walk us media types through the change, but here&#8217;s the main thing every Facebook user ought to know: Facebook wants users to share as much about themselves&#8211;with everyone on the Internet&#8211;as they can.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a screenshot of the new privacy settings menu Facebook presented to me today. Note that the <em>default settings</em> for most of my data are set to &#8220;Everyone&#8221; (click image to enlarge):<br />

<p>But what does &#8220;Everyone&#8221; actually mean? It means anyone with access to the Web. But you&#8217;ll need to read the fine print below the settings to figure that one out:</p>

<p>Important note: Facebook says these settings won&#8217;t be the default for anyone under age 18, and that kids will be prevented from sharing much of their information outside of Facebook. The company also says that users who have tweaked their privacy settings in the past will find those settings as the default when they first visit their privacy page. The majority of users, though, will end up with the &#8220;Everyone&#8221; default.</p>
<p>That said, the &#8220;share everything with everyone&#8221; strategy is a crucial part of Facebook&#8217;s effort to supplant Google (GOOG) as the Web&#8217;s key data repository. And I don&#8217;t have a problem with it, in theory: Like <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/07/google-ceo-on-privacy-if_n_383105.html">Eric Schmidt</a> (and<a href="http://www.wired.com/politics/law/news/1999/01/17538"> Scott McNealy</a> before him), I don&#8217;t think there&#8217;s much privacy on the Web to begin with. Still, even though people don&#8217;t tend to behave as if privacy is important to them on the Web, they certainly like to complain about it.</p>
<p>And for what it&#8217;s worth, I have gone ahead and deselected the &#8220;Everyone&#8221; option for my stuff. If you want to see video of my toddler toddling, you&#8217;re going to have to be one of my 466 &#8220;friends.&#8221;</p>
<p>My bet: Facebook is going to end up hearing from all sorts of folks who didn&#8217;t realize they&#8217;re sharing everything with &#8220;everyone&#8221; and are now upset about it. And I think Facebook will end up by changing its default settings sooner than later.</p>

The company will release Windows 7, a faster and much better operating system than the little-loved Windows Vista, which did a lot to harm both the company&#8217;s reputation, and the productivity and blood pressure of its users. PC makers will rush to flood physical and online stores with new computers pre-loaded with Windows 7, and to offer the software to Vista owners who wish to upgrade.</p>

<p>With Windows 7, PC users will at last have a strong, modern successor to the sturdy and familiar, but aged, Windows XP, which is still the most popular version of Windows, despite having come out in 2001. In the high-tech world, an eight-year-old operating system is the equivalent of a 20-year-old car. While XP works well for many people, it is relatively weak in areas such as security, networking and other features more important today than when XP was designed around 1999.</p>
<p>After using pre-release versions of Windows 7 for nine months, and intensively testing the final version for the past month on many different machines, I believe it is the best version of Windows Microsoft (MSFT) has produced. It&#8217;s a boost to productivity and a pleasure to use. Despite a few drawbacks, I can heartily recommend Windows 7 to mainstream consumers.</p>
<p>Like the new Snow Leopard operating system released in August by Microsoft&#8217;s archrival, Apple (AAPL), Windows 7 is much more of an evolutionary than a revolutionary product. Its main goal was to fix the flaws in Vista and to finally give Microsoft customers a reason to move up from XP. But Windows 7 is packed with features and tweaks that make using your computer an easier and more satisfying experience.</p>

<p>Windows 7 introduces real advances in organizing your programs and files, arranging your taskbar and desktop, and quickly viewing and launching the page or document you want, when you want it. It also has cool built-in touch-screen features.</p>
<p>It removes a lot of clutter. And it mostly banishes Vista&#8217;s main flaws—sluggishness; incompatibility with third-party software and hardware; heavy hardware requirements; and constant, annoying security warnings.</p>
<p>I tested Windows 7 on 11 different computers, ranging from tiny netbooks to standard laptops to a couple of big desktops. These included machines from Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Dell (DELL), Acer, Asus, Toshiba and Sony (SNE). I even successfully ran it on an Apple Macintosh laptop. On some of these machines, Windows 7 was pre-loaded. On others, I had to upgrade from an earlier version of Windows.</p>
<p>In most cases, the installation took 45 minutes or less, and the new operating system worked snappily and well. But, I did encounter some drawbacks and problems. On a couple of these machines, glacial start-up and reboot times reminded me of Vista. And, on a couple of others, after upgrading, key features like the display or touchpad didn&#8217;t work properly. Also, Windows 7 still requires add-on security software that has to be frequently updated. It&#8217;s tedious and painful to upgrade an existing computer from XP to 7, and the variety of editions in which Windows 7 is offered is confusing.</p>
<p>Finally, Microsoft has stripped Windows 7 of familiar built-in applications, such as email, photo organizing, address book, calendar and video-editing programs. These can be downloaded  free of charge, but they no longer come with the operating system, though some PC makers may choose to pre-load them.</p>
<p>In recent years, I, like many other reviewers, have argued that Apple&#8217;s Mac OS X operating system is much better than Windows. That&#8217;s no longer true. I still give the Mac OS a slight edge because it has a much easier and cheaper upgrade path; more built-in software programs; and far less vulnerability to viruses and other malicious software, which are overwhelmingly built to run on Windows.</p>
<p>Now, however, it&#8217;s much more of a toss-up between the two rivals. Windows 7 beats the Mac OS in some areas, such as better previews and navigation right from the taskbar, easier organization of open windows on the desktop and touch-screen capabilities. So Apple will have to scramble now that the gift of a flawed Vista has been replaced with a reliable, elegant version of Windows. </p>
<p>Here are some of the key features of Windows 7.</p>
<p><strong>New Taskbar: </strong>In Windows 7, the familiar taskbar has been reinvented and made taller. Instead of mainly being a place where icons of open windows temporarily appear, it now is a place where you can permanently &#8220;pin&#8221; the icons of frequently used programs anywhere along its length, and in any arrangement you choose. This is a concept borrowed from Apple&#8217;s similar feature, the Dock. But Windows 7 takes the concept further.</p>
<p>For each running program, hovering over its taskbar icon pops up a small preview screen showing a mini-view of that program. This preview idea was in Vista. But, in Windows 7, it has been expanded in several ways. Now, every open window in that program is included separately in the preview. If you mouse over a window in the preview screen, it appears at full size on your desktop and all other windows on the desktop become transparent—part of a feature called Aero Peek. Click on the window and it comes up, ready for use. You can even close windows from these previews, or play media in them.</p>
<p>I found this feature more natural and versatile than a similar feature in Snow Leopard called Dock Expose.</p>
<p>You can also use Aero Peek at any time to see your empty desktop, with open windows reduced to virtual panes of glass. To do this, you just hover over a small rectangle at the right edge of the taskbar.</p>
<p>Taskbar icons also provide Jump Lists—pop-up menus listing frequent actions or recent files used.</p>
<p><strong>Desktop organization: </strong>A feature called Snap allows you to expand windows to full-screen size by just dragging them to the top of the screen, or to half-screen size by dragging them to the left or right edges of the screen. Another called Shake allows you to make all other windows but the one you&#8217;re working on disappear by simply grabbing its title bar with the mouse and shaking it several times.</p>
<p><strong>File organization:</strong> In Windows Explorer, the left-hand column now includes a feature called Libraries. Each library—Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos—consolidates all files of those types regardless of which folder, or even which hard disk, they live in.</p>
<p><strong>Networking: </strong>Windows 7 still isn&#8217;t quite as natural at networking as I find the Mac to be, but it&#8217;s better than Vista. For instance, now you can see all available wireless networks by just clicking on an icon in the taskbar. A new feature called HomeGroups is supposed to let you share files more easily among Windows 7 PCs on your home network. In my tests, it worked, but not consistently, and it required typing in long, arcane passwords.</p>
<p><strong>Touch: </strong>Some of the same kinds of multitouch gestures made popular on the iPhone are now built into Windows 7. But these features won&#8217;t likely become popular for a while because to get the most out of them, a computer needs a special type of touch screen that goes beyond most of the ones existing now. I tested this on one such laptop, a Lenovo, and was able to move windows around, to resize and flip through photos, and more.</p>
<p><strong>Speed: </strong>In my tests, on every machine, Windows 7 ran swiftly and with far fewer of the delays typical in running Vista. All the laptops I tested resumed from sleep quickly and properly, unlike in Vista. Start-up and restart times were also improved. I chose six Windows 7 laptops from different makers to compare with a new MacBook Pro laptop. The Mac still started and restarted faster than most of the Windows 7 PCs. But the speed gap has narrowed considerably, and one of the Lenovos beat the Mac in restart time.</p>
<p><strong>Nagging: </strong>In the name of security, Vista put up nagging warnings about a wide variety of tasks, driving people crazy. In Windows 7, you can now set this system so it nags you only when things are happening that you consider really worth the nag. Also, Microsoft has consolidated most of the alerts from the lower-right system tray into one icon, and they seemed less frequent.</p>
<p><strong>Compatibility: </strong>I tried a wide variety of third-party software and all worked fine on every Windows 7 machine. These included Mozilla Firefox; Adobe (ADBE) Reader; Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Picasa and Chrome; and Apple&#8217;s iTunes and Safari. </p>
<p>I also tested several hardware devices, and, unlike Vista, Windows 7 handled all but one smoothly. These included a networked H-P printer, a Canon (CAJ) camera, an iPod nano, and at least five external flash drives and hard disks. The one failure was a Verizon (VZ) USB cellular modem. Microsoft says you don&#8217;t need external software to run these, but I found it was necessary, and even then had to use a trick I found on the Web to get it to work.</p>
<p><strong>System Requirements: </strong>Nearly all Vista PCs, and newer or beefier XP machines, should be able to run Windows 7 fine. Even the netbooks I tested ran it speedily, especially with the Starter Edition, which lacks some of the powerful graphics effects in the operating system. (Other netbooks will be able to run other editions.) </p>
<p>If you have a standard PC, called a 32-bit PC, you&#8217;ll need at least one gigabyte of memory, 16 gigabytes of free hard-disk space and a graphics system that can support Microsoft technologies called &#8220;DirectX 9 with WDDM 1.0.&#8221; You&#8217;ll also need a processor with a speed of at least one gigahertz. If you have a newer-style 64-bit PC, which can use more memory, you&#8217;ll need at least two gigabytes of memory and 20 gigabytes of free hard disk space. In either case, you should double the minimum memory specification.</p>

<p><strong>Installation, editions and price: </strong>There are four editions of Windows 7 of interest to consumers. One, a limited version called Starter, comes pre-loaded on netbooks. A second, called Professional, is mainly for people who need to tap remotely into company networks (check with your company to see if you need this). A third, called Ultimate, is mainly for techies who want every feature of all other editions. Most average consumers will want Home Premium, which costs $120 for upgrades.</p>
<p>The system for upgrading is complicated, but Vista owners can upgrade to the exactly comparable edition of Windows 7 while keeping all files, settings and programs in place.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, XP owners, the biggest body of Windows users, won&#8217;t be able to do that. They&#8217;ll have to wipe out their hard disks after backing up their files elsewhere, then install Windows 7, then restore their personal files, then re-install all their programs from the original CDs or downloaded installer files. Then, they have to install all the patches and upgrades to those programs from over the years.</p>
<p>Microsoft includes an Easy Transfer wizard to help with this, but it moves only personal files, not programs. This painful XP upgrade process is one of the worst things about Windows 7 and will likely drive many XP owners to either stick with what they&#8217;ve got or wait and buy a new one.</p>
<p>In my tests, both types of installations went OK, though the latter could take a long time.</p>
<p>Bottom line: Windows 7 is a very good, versatile operating system that should help Microsoft bury the memory of Vista and make PC users happy.</p>

<p>But are you using it to your best advantage?</p>
<p>Despite the popularity of Microsoft Outlook, several of its functions aren&#8217;t noticeable unless you dig around in menus or try out keystroke shortcuts. Many of these tricks can be found by reading a user manual, but users would rather be spending their time in Outlook responding to or writing emails. </p>

<p>In last week&#8217;s column I reviewed a program called Postbox, which displays email and its contents in unique ways. In that review I mentioned that Outlook, too, has extra functions, but that these aren&#8217;t always as obvious as they should be. Below, I&#8217;ve compiled a list of what I consider to be some of Outlook&#8217;s lesser-known talents. I focused on Outlook 2007, which many people currently use, and I also included a handful of notes about what Outlook 2010—due out late spring or early summer—will include. With any luck, you&#8217;ll find a few tips here that make your time in Outlook better spent. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Search Me</h5>
<p>Rather than simply entering a word into the Outlook search box, you can help the search engine narrow its results by giving it specific parameters. For example, if I remember that my friend sent an email with &#8220;LSU tickets&#8221; in the subject line, I can type &#8220;subject: LSU&#8221; to pull out all emails about the Louisiana university. Or if I want to find all emails from Molly, I can write, &#8220;from: Molly.&#8221; This works with several other terms including &#8220;to,&#8221; &#8220;sent,&#8221; &#8220;cc&#8221; and &#8220;message size.&#8221;</p>
<p>Search Folders, shown in the folder list with a magnifying glass icon beside them, offer a way of saving the searches you perform most often. If, for example, you often search for flight confirmation emails, you could make a Search Folder called &#8220;Travel&#8221; that would contain a constantly updated list of emails containing the names of airlines. </p>

<p>New folders can be set up by right clicking on the Search Folders icon, selecting New Search Folder and following steps to select a type of folder from one of many pre-set types of folders—such as &#8220;mail sent directly to me,&#8221; &#8220;large mail&#8221; or &#8220;mail flagged for follow up.&#8221; Or you can create a custom Search Folder by telling it to search for certain words that appear within specific message fields.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Color Coding</h5>
<p>To make certain emails stand out in a large list—like emails from your boss or messages addressed only to you—you can set up a rule that makes the email show up in a specific color. Or you can set certain emails to appear in bold font, or in a specific font type and size. Just think of all the emails from your mom that will never go unnoticed again thanks to red type, 14-point font and underlined text.</p>
<p>Setting up the way emails are displayed can be done by going to the Tools menu, selecting Organize, Using Colors and then choosing specific colors for emails from specific people. More advanced automatic settings for applying font type and size to emails can be added by selecting Automatic Formatting in the top right corner of the Using Colors screen. Click &#8220;Add&#8221; to create more rules. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Souped-Up Calendar</h5>
<p>The Outlook Calendar can be organized to look the way you want it rather than the way it&#8217;s set up by default. For example, if you like looking at your day in hourly intervals rather than Outlook&#8217;s default 30-minute blocks, you can right click anywhere you see hours shown and select 60 minutes. Other increments are also available, like five, 10 and 15 minutes. </p>
<p>Outlook can also display other time zones right beside your own time zone by right clicking on the listed meeting hours, selecting Change Time Zone and checking the box labeled Show an Additional Time Zone. This is helpful for people who often work with distant colleagues, saving them from making a mistake and not factoring the right time zone for the other person. A Swap Time Zone button here quickly changes from one set zone to another, which could be a boon for people who regularly travel to different places and want their Outlook settings to reflect that they&#8217;re working from there.</p>
<p>Like color-coded emails, calendar events can be automatically sorted into pre-set categories like Personal, Travel and Family by setting formatting to look for certain words like Tennis (Personal), United (Travel) and Mom, Dad or Allison (Family). Added events that use these words automatically get labeled with a designated color to give your calendar a visual way of distinguishing different types of activities. </p>
<p>Another useful calendar tip: You can hold Control while selecting certain dates on the small view of the calendar and you&#8217;ll see only the schedules for those dates. So if I want to see Sept. 19, 22 and 24, I hold Control while selecting each date to see the three days&#8217; activities displayed in the right viewing panel. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Visual Contacts</h5>
<p>All Contacts in Outlook can be labeled with a photo of the person, which you add by double clicking on the small head icon in someone&#8217;s contact card and then choosing a photo from your collection. People who work in the same company and use Outlook can add their own photo to their contact and it will show up with their emails. </p>
<p>The top right corner of each contact card shows what a person&#8217;s digital business card would look like; this is an image that can be edited and copied using a right click, and then it can be copied and pasted to any email signature. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Looking Ahead</h5>
<p>In Outlook 2010, due out next year, Microsoft (MSFT) says it hopes to streamline work in Outlook, creating smarter rules that do more with less manual work. </p>
<p>One example of this approach is that emails in the next version of Outlook will be, by default, sorted into conversations—a little like Gmail&#8217;s current system. An Ignore button will move all future emails related to the same conversation into the Deleted Items folder. That will include those with changed subject lines because Microsoft uses a special identifier to know which emails are associated with one another. A Clean Up button moves all redundant replies to the Deleted Items folder, leaving just the most recent message in the conversation. </p>
<p>Another feature is Reply with Meeting, a button in Outlook 2010 that will let users create a meeting out of an email. Selecting Reply with Meeting automatically invites those included in the email to attend a meeting. </p>
<p>The title of the meeting is the same as the subject of the email. If the users are in the same corporate network and they all use Outlook Calendar, this tool also looks for the next available time and date on everyone&#8217;s calendar.</p>
<p>Quick Steps, another streamlined feature of Outlook 2010, are one-click shortcuts that simultaneously perform several common actions that people take when handling email. If you select a Quick Step called Reply and Delete, it replies to an email and deletes the original. Users can create their own personalized Quick Steps like one labeled Social that, when selected, marks the email as read, moves it to a special folder and labels it under a certain category.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When the cheap laptops known as netbooks first came out over a year ago, computer makers were able to offer them at low prices in part by shipping them with the free Linux open-source operating system, rather than Microsoft&#8217;s Windows. Since then, Windows netbooks have taken over most of the market after Microsoft began pushing Windows XP aggressively to netbook makers and consumers realized Linux netbooks didn&#8217;t work well with some popular applications and devices.</p>
<p>Linux on netbooks isn&#8217;t going away though. In fact, software and hardware companies have been making big investments to improve Linux netbooks. For the past week, I&#8217;ve been using several flavors of Linux running on netbooks &#8212; Ubuntu, Hewlett-Packard&#8217;s Mi (which is based on Ubuntu) and Moblin, created largely by Intel and not yet available commercially. In all cases, the Linux netbooks failed at some basic functions that any laptop, no matter how tiny and inexpensive, should be able to handle, like working with printers. At the same time, Mi and Moblin have impressive graphical user interfaces well-suited to the habits of typical netbook users, like checking email and accessing social-networking sites, as well as the small screens and low horsepower of tiny laptops. In addition to Linux, all of the computers shared the standard features, or lack thereof, common among netbooks, including compact keyboards and no DVD drives.</p>

H-P&#8217;s Mini 110 Mi Edition</div>
<p>The most polished of the products was H-P&#8217;s Mini 110 Mi Edition, a new model with a 10.1-inch screen that H-P will begin selling on its Web site for $279.99 on June 10. That&#8217;s nearly $50 less than what H-P will charge for the Mini 110 running Windows XP, which will come with a 160-gigabyte hard drive instead of the 8-gigabyte solid-state drive that will come with the Mi edition.</p>
<p>The striking thing about this netbook is the slick graphical user interface created by H-P that runs on top of Ubuntu and first began appearing on H-P netbooks early this year. Instead of a traditional desktop like that found in Windows and the Mac, Mi (pronounced &#8220;me&#8221;) arranges commonly used applications and content on a screen called the &#8220;dashboard,&#8221; which looks like a personalized Web page and lists recently received emails, fresh thumbnail images of favorite Web sites, and a Web-search toolbar.</p>
<p>The Mi home screen is a clever way to make the computer seem alive with on- and off-line content, which is fitting since netbooks are designed for on-the-go Internet activities. It&#8217;s also tailor-made for the small screen size of netbooks.</p>
<p>A more eye-catching iteration of Linux is Moblin, which I tried out in test form on an Acer netbook; it is expected to ship on netbooks by the end of the year. Moblin has a menu of icons at the top of the screen, the most interesting of which leads to the M-Zone, a home screen that displays calendar appointments and favorite applications alongside snapshots of recently visited sites and a continuous feed from the user&#8217;s Twitter network.</p>
<p>An icon called &#8220;People&#8221; leads to a list of instant-messaging buddies, while another, called &#8220;Zones,&#8221; let me organize all the applications I had launched into different virtual workspaces, which is useful for hopping between various tasks on a small-screen device like a netbook.</p>
<p>The look and feel of the standard Ubuntu system, without the Mi interface, is more commonplace. I tried out a Dell Mini 10 with a 10.1-inch display and 160-gigabyte hard drive that sells for $349 on Dell&#8217;s Web site. The Mini 10 ships with version 8.04 of Ubuntu, which resembles Windows XP, with its desktop, taskbar and pop-up menu system. Ubuntu, in some cases, seemed to overestimate the size of the Dell Mini&#8217;s display: A window for configuring wireless-networking capabilities was so large it bled off the screen, and I couldn&#8217;t access all the buttons on it. I also installed on the Dell a new version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix, which works better on small screens. Since a Windows XP version of the Dell Mini 10 sells for the same price as the Ubuntu, I can&#8217;t see a compelling reason to choose the Ubuntu option.</p>
<p>All the netbooks I tried had compatibility problems with other external devices. The netbooks couldn&#8217;t load the software drivers to let me print to my Canon and Dell printers. I couldn&#8217;t load pictures over a USB cable from my Canon PowerShot SD750 digital camera. I was able to get my pictures on the machines by plugging a storage card from my camera directly into the netbooks.</p>
<p>Canonical, the London company that oversees development work on Ubuntu, says it is improving the system&#8217;s compatibility with various devices. Intel says it is unfair to judge Moblin until it is commercially available.</p>
<p>Some key applications currently don&#8217;t run on Linux, like Apple&#8217;s iTunes, which makes it difficult to load music files onto iPods from the netbooks. While the Linux laptops didn&#8217;t run Microsoft Office, they came with OpenOffice, a free package of word-processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications that allowed me to open and modify basic Word and Excel files.</p>
<p>The companies behind Linux netbooks have made great strides in improving user interfaces, but until they can achieve similar breakthroughs in how the machines work with other devices, Windows netbooks are still a better deal.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re tired of the basic BlackBerry design (small keyboard with a small screen) or the iPhone design (a virtual keyboard on a large touch screen) you might prefer a device with a roomy physical keyboard that stays out of your way, hiding under a large screen until you need it. Over six years ago, a small company called Danger introduced just such a device, called the Sidekick.</p>
<p>Since then, Danger has been acquired by Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), and there have been many iterations of the Sidekick. This Monday, yet another version of the Sidekick will be released: the Sidekick LX. Its swing-out screen design hasn&#8217;t changed much over the years, but competitors have since produced several other devices that also have screens that move to reveal QWERTY keyboards &#8212; including the Google (GOOG) Android G1 phone, whose chief designer also helped create the Sidekick.</p>

<p>This week, I tested the T-Mobile Sidekick LX to see how this old chestnut fared with some new polishing inside and out. It still bears the flashy, hip features that distinguished older Sidekicks, and newly integrated social-networking apps for Facebook, MySpace and Twitter enhance these traits. A Download Catalog works like Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) popular App Store by bringing games, apps, themes and sounds directly to the device.</p>
<p>But this Sidekick&#8217;s pricing doesn&#8217;t make much sense in our current recession: It will cost $250 after a mail-in rebate for new T-Mobile customers who sign up for a two-year contract; current T-Mobile customers who are eligible for an upgrade will pay $200 after the same discounts.</p>
<p>For $200, you could buy Apple&#8217;s iPhone or Research In Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry Storm, which both have touch screens and come with Microsoft Exchange support that synchronizes the device with corporate email accounts. (T-Mobile says the Sidekick LX should be able to get Exchange support from the device&#8217;s Download Catalog &#8220;in the coming months,&#8221; but wouldn&#8217;t be more specific.) The Sidekick also lacks Wi-Fi capability, which is also true for the BlackBerry Storm but not so for the iPhone, which works with 3G or Wi-Fi networks.</p>
<p>The absence of a touch screen is glaring on such an expensive device, especially one with a screen this large. It&#8217;s easy to imagine using a finger to flick and spin the Sidekick&#8217;s on-screen menu wheel, tapping on one to open it. Instead, you&#8217;re stuck using a trackball to repeatedly scroll through a crowded, 15-menu wheel.</p>

<p>The LX is the thinnest Sidekick yet, but it still looked rather large lying next to my BlackBerry Curve 8300 and an iPhone; it measures 1.3 and 2.16 cubic inches larger than each, respectively. Compared with past Sidekicks, this one has a design that feels flatter thanks to a thin flip-out screen that smoothly blends into the device in its closed position. You have to lift up the nestled-in screen before it turns to flip out, and I found it a little harder to open with just a push of my left thumb.</p>
<p>The Sidekick LX, however, has some hearty extras including a generous 3.2-inch display, a 3G connection that makes it easy to use for quickly browsing the Web, built-in GPS and a 3.2-megapixel camera (like the BlackBerry Storm and new BlackBerry Curve 8900 cameras). It comes with a 1-gigabyte microSD card, but this memory card can be accessed only by pulling off the device&#8217;s back panel instead of via a card slot on the side.</p>
<p>I brought the Sidekick LX with me for a weekend in Boston and its good-quality camera came in handy as I wandered Copley Square and snapped photos of still-blooming tulips in bright colors. I signed into my Facebook and Twitter accounts, and updates from these networks flashed across the top of the screen in banner-like news flashes.</p>
<p>The Sidekick LX can play YouTube videos, and can record its own videos for uploading and sharing to Web sites. Its colorful screen has over twice the resolution of its predecessor and is 0.6-inch larger.</p>
<p>But a few awkward software designs left me scratching my head. After I uploaded a photo from the Sidekick LX to Facebook, I was left in the Facebook app, rather than my device&#8217;s photo album, where I started and wanted to be. MySpace updates are pushed to the Sidekick LX as they happen, but Facebook automatically updates only once an hour. Twitter can be set to check tweets as often as every five minutes, but, by default, it&#8217;s set to check only every 30 minutes &#8212; a glacial pace for Twitter fans.</p>
<p>I used the Download Catalog to buy a few apps, games and ringtones for my Sidekick, including a $6.99 game of &#8220;Who Wants to Be a Millionaire 2009&#8243;; a $2.99 flashlight app; and a $2.49 ringtone that played 15 seconds of Katy Perry&#8217;s song &#8220;Thinking of You.&#8221; T-Mobile says there are thousands of items in this catalog.</p>
<p>Calls placed and received on the Sidekick were remarkably clear-sounding to me and the friends I spoke with. Dialing numbers could be a little frustrating because, as was the case with former Sidekicks, you&#8217;ll need to open the flip-out screen to dial the number and then close it so you can hold the phone up to your ear. But most people will call friends in their address books and won&#8217;t need to use the number keypad.</p>
<p>The Sidekick&#8217;s 15 menus are simply too many to scroll through. I would prefer it if several categories were combined into one, such as Phone, myFaves (T-Mobile&#8217;s list of five friends you call), Phone Messaging and Address Book. Currently, these are listed as four separate menus. Simultaneously pressing the Sidekick&#8217;s Jump and Cancel buttons brings up a Quick Access view of recently opened menus and unread messages, and this eases navigation.</p>
<p>For its price, the Sidekick LX should be shipped with Microsoft Exchange already working, and all of its social-networking apps should have better updating capabilities. But most of all, the Sidekick&#8217;s big screen is just begging for multitouch in place of a trackball. If these features were part of the Sidekick LX 2009, it might be worth its price.</p>

These folks scorn Apple&#8217;s popular iPhone, whose keyboard is virtual and must be operated by tapping on the screen.</p>
<p>But, on Friday, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=vz'>Verizon Wireless</a> and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=RIMM'>Research in Motion</a> (RIMM), the BlackBerry&#8217;s maker, will do the unthinkable: They will introduce a BlackBerry model without a physical keyboard, one where typing and navigating require tapping on glass, just as users do on the iPhone. <p>Despite its lack of a keyboard, the Storm is a real BlackBerry in every other respect, with push email, corporate features and the familiar BlackBerry menus. In many respects, the Storm is a touch-based, large-screen version of the recently released BlackBerry Bold, which is the most polished version of a traditional BlackBerry. It is also the latest member of the new class of hand-held computers, the super-smart phone category kicked off by the iPhone last year and joined by the Google G1 earlier this year.</p>
<p>The Storm sports a large, high-resolution touch screen that fills most of its surface and automatically switches from portrait to landscape mode when the phone is turned. There&#8217;s also a forthcoming souped-up download store for third-party software, meant to be similar to the ones on the iPhone and the Google (GOOG) phone. And the Storm can even be used in European and other countries where most Verizon (VZ) phones don&#8217;t work.</p>

<p>However, the biggest innovation in the Storm is a clever feature RIM hopes will give it a big advantage over the iPhone. When you strike a key or icon on the Storm&#8217;s screen, you feel a physical sensation, as if you were pressing down on a real key or button. That&#8217;s because you are, in fact, pressing a real button. The entire glass display is one large button, mounted on a mechanical substructure that allows it to be depressed when pressure is applied.</p>
<p>The idea behind this feature is to make typing on glass feel much more like typing on a real keyboard, and thus to make the virtual keyboard, and the touch interface, more acceptable to people used to physical keyboards and buttons. This push-down screen also replaces the side-mounted scroll wheel or track ball on other BlackBerrys for activating menu choices and icons.</p>
<p>But, in my tests, this physical feedback feature, which RIM calls SurePress, didn&#8217;t magically turn the Storm&#8217;s touch interface and virtual keyboard into their physical counterparts. The feature does provide a more reassuring confirmation that a key has been struck or an icon has been clicked than the mere visual feedback one receives from the iPhone. But neither I, nor any of the several BlackBerry addicts I asked to try it out, considered typing on the Storm&#8217;s keyboard to be very similar to using the keyboard of a traditional full-sized BlackBerry.</p>
<p>In my opinion, using the Storm&#8217;s keyboard is much more like using the iPhone&#8217;s keyboard than a traditional BlackBerry&#8217;s. I found that I could type quite well on the Storm after awhile, but that a greater adjustment, and more practice, were required than with a physical keyboard.</p>
<p>The Storm also has a keyboard oddity that I found annoying, and that may put off others. It presents you with a full virtual keyboard only when you are holding it horizontally. When you hold the Storm vertically, you get a mashed-up keyboard, like the one on the narrower BlackBerry Pearl, which has multiple letters on each key. This keyboard design relies on software to guess which letter you meant to press. You can also switch to a virtual cellphone-style keypad that requires you to hit each key multiple times.</p>

<p>This is a curious design decision. Once a company ditches a physical keyboard for a virtual one, it can create all kinds of keyboard variations. RIM could have offered a full, vertically oriented keyboard, even if it would have had smaller, more closely spaced keys.</p>
<p>RIM also failed to customize the Storm&#8217;s virtual keyboard for some common, specific tasks. For instance, on the iPhone, when you are typing in a Web address in the browser, the keyboard morphs to offer a convenient key that automatically enters &#8220;.com&#8221;. Not so on the Storm.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s another glaring deficit in the Storm: It lacks Wi-Fi capability. This means that, unlike on the Bold, the iPhone or the Google G1, if high-speed cellphone data service is absent or pokey, you can&#8217;t fall back on speedy Wi-Fi connections in public places. And, at home or in the office, you can&#8217;t take advantage of Wi-Fi connections that are often much faster than cellphone data networks.</p>
<p>The Storm has some important advantages over the iPhone. Its screen, while 7% smaller physically, offers about 13% higher resolution. Photos and videos look beautiful on it. It has much better battery life for phone calls than either the iPhone or the Google G1. While the latter two phones deliver just under their claimed five hours of talk time, in my tests, the Storm lasted a bit over six hours, which is actually half an hour more than its claimed 5.5 hours of talk time. And the Storm has a removable battery, unlike its Apple rival.</p>
<p>This new BlackBerry comes with more memory than the similarly priced base model of the iPhone &#8212; nine gigabytes versus eight gigabytes. And, unlike the iPhone&#8217;s memory, the Storm&#8217;s is expandable, via larger flash cards.</p>
<p>The Storm&#8217;s camera is much better than the iPhone&#8217;s, at 3.2 megapixels, versus just 2 megapixels for the Apple device. It also has zoom and flash, features the iPhone&#8217;s camera lacks. And, unlike the iPhone or the Google G1, the Storm can record videos. In my tests, all of these camera features worked well.</p>
<p>Also, the Storm has copy and paste functionality; MMS (a service for sending photos directly to other phones without using email); voice dialing; and the ability to act as a modem for your laptop. It also allows you to edit, and not just to view, Microsoft (MSFT) Office documents. All of these features are missing from the iPhone out of the box.</p>
<p>The Storm also has a better speaker than the iPhone, and a noise-canceling microphone system. Phone calls, even on speaker phone, were crisp, clear and plenty loud. Physically, the Storm is attractive but hardly svelte. While it&#8217;s about the same length and width as the iPhone, it is 15% thicker and 17% heavier &#8212; almost as heavy as the chunky G1.</p>
<p>The Verizon high-speed network on which the Storm runs is older and better-established than either the T-Mobile (DT) high-speed system the G1 uses or the AT&#038;T (T) 3G network used by the current iPhone. Where Verizon&#8217;s high-speed data coverage is strong, the Storm flies.</p>
<p>But, because it lacks Wi-Fi, the Storm can be much slower at Web access than its main competitors. I tested these Web speeds in two hotels in Silicon Valley. In the first, where Verizon reception was strong, the Storm trounced the iPhone on cellphone data speeds, averaging over 800 kilobits per second to the iPhone&#8217;s 621 kbps over AT&#038;T. But, when I switched the iPhone to use the hotel&#8217;s Wi-Fi network, it beat the Storm by 100 kbps or so.</p>
<p>At the second hotel, barely a mile away, the Storm&#8217;s lack of Wi-Fi hurt much more. There, Verizon&#8217;s signal was poor, and data speeds on the Storm averaged a horrible 96 kbps. But the iPhone on AT&#038;T averaged 459 kbps, and on Wi-Fi the iPhone averaged 785 kbps.</p>
<p>My test Storm, which was a near-final model missing only a few minor software tweaks, was also sluggish at some tasks. It took noticeably longer than the iPhone to flip the first photo from landscape to portrait orientation, or to start the process of flipping through a series of photos by swiping them with a finger. And some other tasks were also slow. It&#8217;s possible that production models will be quicker.</p>
<p>Rim has tweaked the familiar BlackBerry user interface for the touch screen, and in general these changes worked well. You select the menu item or icon you want with a light touch, then press down on the screen to activate or confirm your choice. There are even a couple of cool new touch features. For instance, in a list of emails, if you lightly touch and hold one entry, the Storm shows you all messages in that thread.</p>
<p>But this combination of a light touch followed by a hard press on the large screen took some practice, just like typing did. It befuddled several BlackBerry veterans at first.</p>
<p>And some common tasks took more steps than on the iPhone. For instance, emailing a link from a Web page required four steps on the Storm, versus two on the Apple device. The Storm&#8217;s email system will be familiar to every BlackBerry user. It has the same corporate email features as other BlackBerrys, and I was easily able as well to use a BlackBerry Internet email account and to set up several personal email accounts, including Gmail.</p>
<p>The Web browser is much improved over the one in older BlackBerry models, and offers multiple ways to view and navigate pages, including one in which a finger moves a cursor, just as on a PC. But I found that panning and zooming in the browser was a bit slower and more awkward than on the iPhone. And, to make some Web sites work properly, I had to dig through menus to change options.</p>
<p>Using the BlackBerry desktop software, I was easily able to synchronize my calendar and contact data over a cable from a Windows PC. (There&#8217;s also Mac software for the same task.) But, unlike the iPhone or the G1, the Storm doesn&#8217;t offer wireless synchronization from consumer services, only from corporate servers.</p>
<p>The Storm&#8217;s multimedia software isn&#8217;t as fancy as the iPhone&#8217;s, but it&#8217;s better than the G1&#8242;s, and worked very well in my tests.</p>
<p>Overall, the Storm is a very capable handheld computer that will appeal to BlackBerry users who have been pining for a touch-controlled device with a larger screen. And it offers yet another good option for anyone who is looking to buy one of the new, more powerful, pocket computers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are you a member of the &#8220;I-check-my-email-constantly-even-when-I-know-no-one-has-emailed-me&#8221; club? If so, your mobile email device is never far and you&#8217;ve found yourself wondering how other people can leave unread emails sitting in their inboxes all day. On the other hand, those seemingly unplugged people are likely puzzled by BlackBerry addicts, wondering what could possibly be so urgent that they need to know about it the second it happens.</p>
<p>This week, I tested Peek, a device that might bridge the gap between these two camps. It&#8217;s made for those who don&#8217;t intend to become consumed with mobile email, and don&#8217;t need a combination phone, Internet, digital camera and email gadget. Yet from time to time, these people wish they had a better way to check emails without going home and turning on their computers.</p>

<p>Since I fit the constantly-checking-email description, I enlisted the help of someone who falls squarely into the category that Peek is targeting: my mother. Mom is constantly on the go, working on one project or another, and she doesn&#8217;t have time to consistently check her email. On more than one occasion, I&#8217;ve had to call her to talk about emails I sent that she didn&#8217;t yet read.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Stylish and Simple</h5>
<p>Peek is a stylishly thin device that, to a mobile email novice, could pass for a BlackBerry. It receives and sends email, period. Peek doesn&#8217;t have a Web browser, phone or built-in digital camera. It&#8217;s sold for $100 at Target and GetPeek.com, and costs $20 monthly for contract-free service. Most email accounts work with this gadget, including Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and AOL, and up to three accounts can be set to work on each device.</p>
<p>Peek Inc., a New York company that was started by former Virgin Mobile USA (VM) employees, mailed a Peek to my mom in Pennsylvania, and she has been using it for about a week with positive results.</p>
<p>I, too, tested a Peek, but I was more interested in my mom&#8217;s feedback since, prior to this test, she hadn&#8217;t used a mobile email device and I use two different ones &#8212; regularly. Overall, I&#8217;d suggest waiting until November to buy a Peek due to a handful of improvements that the company plans to add by then.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Winning Over a Novice</h5>
<p>My mom got the hang of Peek almost instantly and found it both helpful and relatively easy to use. She liked its full keyboard and the way most of its keys lit up and were familiarly placed like those on a computer keyboard &#8212; a feature I take for granted on my BlackBerry. Its price and stylish, thin look appealed to her, too. She tested an Aqua Blue Peek &#8212; though the device also comes in Black Cherry and Charcoal Gray. I knew Mom was catching on when she casually sent a message from her Peek late one night using the subject line, &#8220;What&#8217;s Up?&#8221;</p>
<p>My mom suggested a few improvements, and I agreed with all of them. The Peek can vibrate, chime and glow blue when new emails are received, but none of these indicators are particularly noticeable. For example, the chime sounds only once and neither my mom nor I could always hear it &#8212; even at its loudest setting &#8212; especially if it was in a purse. A blue indicator light on the Peek glows once every 10 seconds for 10 minutes after an email is received, but goes idle after that.</p>
<p>The font used on the Peek&#8217;s screen could stand to be a little bigger. My mom found words typed in all capital letters were easier and faster to read than the regular font, but she thought most people wouldn&#8217;t have too much trouble while using their glasses.</p>
<p>Peek Inc. says that by November, it will have added a louder chime, a constantly blinking indicator light and a larger font to the device. Also in November, people who purchase 12 months of service at once will get an extra month free.</p>
<p>Compared with my BlackBerry Curve, the Peek was thinner but I found its buttons and side scroll wheel a bit stiff. And Mom and I both found that the oft-used Space bar key was too tough to press down.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">One Inbox, Three Accounts</h5>
<p>The Peek&#8217;s straightforward system uses one inbox view (in which up to three email accounts are combined), one menu and a side scroll wheel for selecting commands. And though my mom didn&#8217;t seem to mind, the device&#8217;s overall navigation system came off as a bit clumsy to me. For example, rather than selecting an email to read it, I had to select an email, and then choose &#8220;Open Email&#8221; from a menu list. On most other devices, this can be done with one step.</p>
<p>But some BlackBerry tricks are built into the Peek, such as touching &#8220;T&#8221; to automatically go to the top of an email or inbox; &#8220;B&#8221; to go to the bottom; or &#8220;N&#8221; to move to the next email without navigating back to the inbox list. Likewise, the space bar serves as a built-in Page Down button. And holding a letter down will capitalize it.</p>
<p>Photo attachments can be easily opened on the Peek, though attached documents from programs like Word and Excel won&#8217;t open up.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Synching Contacts</h5>
<p>A simple step lets users synchronize their email account&#8217;s contact list with the Peek. My mom did this with an AOL account, and I did it with Hotmail, Gmail and .Mac accounts. Peek devices automatically check for email every two to five minutes, or if users can&#8217;t wait two minutes, they can initiate a Send/Receive manually and see an up-to-date queue of emails.</p>
<p>Peeks each have eight megabytes of usable memory, which can hold about 5,000 emails. Once a device reaches capacity, an on-screen prompt asks permission to delete the 500 oldest emails. Peek Inc. says a full battery charge will last about five days if a device handles around 10 to 15 emails a day; power users who send and receive 200 to 300 emails a day will get about two days of use from a full charge.</p>
<p>When asked, my mom concluded that she would probably buy a Peek, but said she still wasn&#8217;t sure that she had an urgent need to see email all that often. She also noted that Peek could become a Pandora&#8217;s box of sorts for people who, as they use it more often, might want to get more out of it &#8212; such as Google searches or other Web browsing.</p>
<p>Peek serves a purpose: It gives those who don&#8217;t belong to the &#8220;I-check-my-email-constantly&#8221; club a way to &#8220;peek&#8221; in on their emails and not feel so unplugged from friends and family. That alone, is reason enough to buy my mom one of these devices.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a> has introduced a new Web browser, called Chrome, aimed at wresting dominance of the browser market from <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a>&#8216;s Internet Explorer. The move takes the Google-Microsoft rivalry to a whole new level. If Google succeeds, it will be a big deal, with major ramifications for the future of the Web.</p>
<p>But just how good is Chrome? How does it differ from IE and from less popular, but still important, browsers like Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a>&#8216;s Safari?</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing Chrome for about a week, trying out all its features and using it side by side with Microsoft&#8217;s latest iteration of IE, which came out just last week.</p>

<p>My verdict: Chrome is a smart, innovative browser that, in many common scenarios, will make using the Web faster, easier and less frustrating. But this first version &#8212; which is just a beta, or test, release &#8212; is rough around the edges and lacks some common browser features Google plans to add later. These omissions include a way to manage bookmarks, a command for emailing links and pages directly from the browser, and even a progress bar to show how much of a Web page has loaded.</p>
<p>Chrome&#8217;s interface has some bold changes from the standard browser design. These new features enhance the Web experience, but they will require some adjustment on the part of users. For instance, Chrome does away with most menus and toolbar icons to give maximum screen space for the Web pages themselves. Also, Google has merged the address bar, where you type in Web addresses, with the search box, where you type in search terms. This unified feature is called the Omnibox.</p>
<p>One striking difference in Chrome is how it handles tabs, which display a single Web page. In Chrome, each tab behaves as a separate browser. The bookmarks bar, Omnibox, menus and toolbar icons are located inside the tab, rather than atop the entire browser. The tabs appear at the top of the computer screen. Chrome also groups related tabs. If you open a new tab from a link in a page that&#8217;s already open, that new tab appears next to the originating page, rather than at the end of the row of tabs.</p>
<p>Despite Google&#8217;s claims that Chrome is fast, it was notably slower in my tests at the common task of launching Web pages than either Firefox or Safari. However, it proved faster than the latest version of IE &#8212; also a beta version &#8212; called IE8.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Microsoft hasn&#8217;t been sitting still. The second beta version of IE8 is the best edition of Internet Explorer in years. It is packed with new features of its own, some of which are similar to those in Chrome, and some of which, in my view, top Chrome&#8217;s features.</p>

<p>For example, while IE8 also groups related tabs, it assigns a different color to each such tab group and allows you to close them all with one click. It has a &#8220;smart&#8221; address box of its own, that drops down a list of suggestions as you type, though it retains a separate search box.</p>
<p>IE8 also has breakthrough privacy features that exceed Chrome&#8217;s, and includes a new technology called Accelerators, which allows you to take rapid action on any selected word or phrase on a Web page, such as generating a map for a place name, without switching to a new page.</p>
<p>As they develop, each of these browsers has a good chance of besting Firefox 3.0, which I have regarded as the best Web browser for Windows, the only operating system on which Chrome currently runs. But they will have to get faster at loading pages. And, to best Firefox on the Macintosh, Google will have to make good on its promise to produce a Mac version of Chrome, something it says it will do in the coming months. Microsoft has no plans to produce a Mac version of IE8.</p>
<p>Chrome and IE8 are far more advanced than Apple&#8217;s Safari. Safari is speedy on both Mac and Windows platforms, but lacks many of the key intelligent features of its newer Google and Microsoft rivals.</p>
<p>Why is Google igniting a new browser war? There are two main reasons, and both involve competing with Microsoft. First, the search giant fears that because its search engine and other major products depend on the browser, Microsoft &#8212; with its rival online products &#8212; might be able to gain an advantage by altering the design of IE, which has roughly a 75% market share.</p>
<p>Second, and more important, Google sees the Web as a platform for the software programs, or applications, that currently run directly on computer operating systems, notably Microsoft&#8217;s Windows. It says current browsers lack the underlying architecture to enable future, more powerful Web applications that will rely more heavily on a common Web programming language called JavaScript. Chrome was designed to be the world&#8217;s speediest browser at handling JavaScript.</p>
<p>That move might one day make Chrome a sort of online operating system that competes with Windows. &#8220;Think of Chrome as more than a simple Web browser,&#8221; Google declares. &#8220;It&#8217;s a platform for running Web applications.&#8221;</p>

<p>I tested Chrome, and IE8, on a plain-vanilla Lenovo ThinkPad laptop running Windows XP, and equipped with a modest processor and one gigabyte of memory.</p>
<p>To gauge Chrome&#8217;s speed at loading Web pages, I launched two large groups of typical Web pages simultaneously, each site opening in its own tab. One group included 15 sports sites, the second 19 news sites. In both tests, Chrome&#8217;s speed fell in the middle, at 35 and 44 seconds, respectively. IE8 was slower, taking 49 and 75 seconds to open the two groups of sites. But Firefox and Safari were much faster, notching identical speeds of 19 seconds for the 15 sites and 28 seconds for the 19 sites.</p>
<p>Google claims that future, more sophisticated Web applications relying more heavily on JavaScript than today&#8217;s sites do would run faster on Chrome. Of course, I couldn&#8217;t test any claim about future scenarios, but I did run Chrome on several JavaScript test sites, used by developers. It handily beat the other browsers. However, Google doesn&#8217;t claim users would see much difference on current Web application sites.</p>
<p>I also tested Chrome&#8217;s compatibility with scores of common Web sites. In general, it did well, rendering the sites properly. But I ran into problems with video. Some video sites refused to recognize Chrome, because its development has been a secret. On others, like Major League Baseball&#8217;s site, videos mostly played properly, but sometimes didn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>IE8 also has some compatibility issues, for different reasons. It&#8217;s the first version of Internet Explorer to hew closely to Web standards. Earlier versions used some nonstandard ways of rendering Web sites, prompting some site designers to adopt techniques that made their pages work in IE, but look odd in Firefox and Safari. Now, ironically, these pages also look strange in IE8. So Microsoft was forced to build in a special Compatibility View button that users must click to see the sites properly.</p>
<p>Chrome is built on three core design principles. The first is its spare user interface: just two menus and a handful of toolbar icons. IE introduced a similar approach in its version 7, but with a difference. Microsoft allows users to restore a traditional menu bar; Google doesn&#8217;t. The only toolbar icon you can add in Chrome is a Home button.</p>
<p>The second principle is that a user can type anything into a single place, the Omnibox, and instantly get suggestions on where to go, gleaned from the user&#8217;s own browsing history and Google&#8217;s rankings of popular sites. Whether you type in a Web address or a search term, the Omnibox is very smart. In my tests, it sometimes came up with the right destination after I typed only one or two letters of the name of a site I often visited.</p>
<p>The Omnibox has another cool feature: Tab-to-Search. If you type in the name of another site that includes its own search feature, like Amazon.com, the Omnibox lets you just press the tab key to search within that site, without opening it first. Chrome, through its Options settings, also lets you change the default search engine used by the Omnibox. Instead of Google&#8217;s own search service, you can use Microsoft&#8217;s Live search, Yahoo search, or others.</p>
<p>The third big principle behind Chrome is that each tab runs, under the hood, as a separate browser. Tabs can be dragged off the main browser and turned into separate windows. If one tab crashes, the rest of the browser keeps running. But this doesn&#8217;t work perfectly. In my tests, all of Chrome died on me when I tried watching an Olympics video on the NBC site.</p>
<p>You can even make a tab a standalone application that runs from the Start Menu, or the desktop, as if it was a separate program.</p>
<p>Chrome has a few other key features. When you open a new tab, you don&#8217;t get a blank page, but a set of thumbnails for your most-visited pages, plus lists of recent search engines you&#8217;ve used, recently used bookmarks and recently closed tabs.</p>
<p>Like other browsers, Chrome puts up a warning when you try to visit a malicious or phony Web site, and it has a private browsing mode, called Incognito, which allows you to browse without leaving any history on your computer &#8212; a feature popularized in Safari.</p>
<p>Chrome also has a pop-up blocker, but it&#8217;s annoying because it flashes a notice that a pop-up has been blocked. IE also does this, but unlike in Chrome, the warnings are much less intrusive.</p>
<p>Internet Explorer 8 has some new features Chrome lacks. Its private browsing mode, called InPrivate, is the first I&#8217;ve seen that not only leaves no traces on your own computer, but also bars Web sites from collecting some types of information on where you&#8217;ve previously been surfing.</p>
<p>While IE8&#8242;s address box and search box remain separate, each also offers rapid suggestions; and both are organized better than Chrome&#8217;s. For instance, the suggestions that drop down from its address bar are divided neatly into categories drawn from the browser&#8217;s own guess, your history and your favorites. One downside: For this to work in Windows XP, you must first install Microsoft&#8217;s desktop search product.</p>
<p>Like Chrome, IE8 lets you switch your default search provider, but it also allows you to switch search engines on the fly. When you type in a search term, icons for alternate search engines appear at the bottom of the suggestion list, and you need only click on these to see search results from, say, Google, instead of Microsoft&#8217;s own Live search engine.</p>
<p>IE8&#8242;s Accelerators feature presents a blue-arrow icon above any text on a Web page that you have selected. Clicking on the icon brings up a list of actions you can take using the selected text, such as posting it to a blog, emailing it, mapping it or searching it. While these actions are set by default to use Microsoft&#8217;s own Web services, you can change them to use Google&#8217;s, Yahoo&#8217;s, or those from other companies.</p>
<p>Microsoft also has built in a feature called Web Slices. These are portions of a Web site that a site developer can designate to appear in the IE8 Favorites bar and to constantly update themselves. An example might be bidding on eBay.</p>
<p>Like Chrome, IE8 also displays useful information whenever you create a new tab, including a list of recently closed tabs and a list of Accelerators.</p>
<p>With the emergence of Chrome, consumers have a new and innovative browser choice, and with IE8, the new browser war is sure to be a worthy contest.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A few weeks ago, I received a dreaded phone call at 8:30 a.m. telling me he wasn&#8217;t going to make it. The &#8220;he&#8221; in this case was my car, and the bearer of bad news was my mechanic. My 1994 Saab bit the dust when its timing belt broke, and after discussions about the cost of the repair versus the value of the car, I accepted the fact that I&#8217;d need to start looking at buying another vehicle.</p>

<p>I headed online to start researching (I was looking for a used car) but was overwhelmed by an avalanche of information. Everyone seemed to have something to say about cars, whether in blogs, community forums, editorial reviews, Kelley Blue Book values, Carfax reports or local dealer sites. As I discussed my findings with friends and family, more people than not were surprised to hear about the variety of research and price comparisons available online.</p>
<p>This week&#8217;s column is an overview of sites that may help you or someone you know browse for a new or used car on the Web. I used sites ranging from trusted resources like <a href="http://ConsumerReports.org" rel="external">ConsumerReports.org</a> to search engine tools like Yahoo Autos. This column can&#8217;t possibly mention every car-searching resource on the Web; rather, it&#8217;s just a taste of what&#8217;s available.</p>
<p><a href="http://Edmunds.com" rel="external">Edmunds.com</a> and ConsumerReports.org both feature informative data on a number of new and used vehicles. Edmunds is a free site specifically geared toward cars, including an online magazine for enthusiasts called Inside Line and a Web forum for discussions about automobiles called CarSpace. I used various tools on Edmunds.com, including one that estimates the true cost to own a specific car over time. I especially enjoyed reading an article titled &#8220;Confessions of a Car Salesman,&#8221; which proved uncanny in predicting a range of tricks and techniques the salespeople used when I first visited a car dealership.</p>
<p>Edmunds offers a four-step pricing system, which includes getting quotes from dealers, and a payment calculator, which estimates monthly payments. Edmunds teams up with <a href="http://AutoTrader.com" rel="external">AutoTrader.com</a> to help perform searches for certified pre-owned or used cars online.</p>
<p>Consumer Reports covers products as well as cars but keeps much of its most useful data behind a Web-site subscription, which costs $26 annually or $5.95 monthly (magazine subscribers can pay a discounted price of $19 a year). You need this subscription to access CR&#8217;s respected ratings and certain sections of its Web forums. These ratings were helpful to me, as they assessed numerous aspects of specific car models, including trouble spots by year, performance, safety and fuel economy.</p>
<p>CR also offers valuable lists such as &#8220;All Recommended Cars,&#8221; &#8220;Best and Worst Used Cars&#8221; and &#8220;Reliable Used Cars by Price.&#8221; A car-buying calculator is an asset to this site that helps you decide whether it would be smarter to buy or lease a vehicle.</p>
<p>Google, Yahoo and AOL all present special search-results pages when you search for a specific car for sale, using drop-down menus and various ways to sort results. Google Base for automobiles, found by selecting &#8220;Vehicles&#8221; from <a href="http://www.google.com/base" rel="external">www.google.com/base</a>, is a list of data submitted to Google. Drop-down menus help broaden or narrow results by sorting the data according to certain attributes, such as make or price. Vehicle-search results can be viewed in one of three formats: List View, Table View or Map View &#8212; an illustration of each car&#8217;s location in relationship to a Zip Code. I found Table View most useful because it organized data in smart, spreadsheet-like displays so I could quickly skim through columns listing price, color, amenities and mileage.</p>

<p>But not all car searches within Google Base returned the same drop-down-menu options for sorting. In a few instances, I couldn&#8217;t sort my search results by model year. Google Base does show the date on which each car was listed.</p>
<p>Yahoo Autos, found at <a href="http://www.autos.yahoo.com" rel="external">www.autos.yahoo.com</a>, teamed up with <a href="http://Cars.com" rel="external">Cars.com</a> to offer richer content, including a Car Finder feature that helps people narrow down what type of new car they might like according to price, driving style and fuel (type and economy). Yahoo even tries to answer car questions with its Yahoo Answers Q&amp;A tool, which lets people submit questions. I found user reviews on this site, as well as expert reviews provided by <a href="http://NewCarTestDrive.com" rel="external">NewCarTestDrive.com</a>, an auto-review site.</p>
<p>The used-car section in Yahoo Autos reminded me of Google with its drop-down menus and results that displayed in list or map views. List view shows plenty of information in one glance, including an image of the car for sale and the number of additional available photos. From this list, users can link directly to view or order Carfax reports or email the dealer, saving time wasted on excess mouse clicks and browsing.</p>
<p>AOL Autos, found at <a href="http://autos.aol.com" rel="external">http://autos.aol.com</a>, does a nice job of integrating Web 2.0 features such as pop-up menus that appear within a page rather than in an entirely new Web page. Vehicle-search results are found by entering a few criteria for a new or used car, and used-car results can be further narrowed by adding or subtracting desired specifics listed on the far left of the screen. Some specs include model type, engine, year or extras like heated seats or a sunroof.</p>
<p>This site can also condense numerous used-car listings into one graph that illustrates car prices in relationship to mileage or year. Selecting any point on the graph reveals a short description of a vehicle&#8217;s location, price and mileage. For new cars, AOL Autos offers lengthy expert reviews from NewCarTestDrive.com, as well as user reviews.</p>
<p>Both Yahoo Autos and AOL Autos walk users through steps to get price quotes from dealers for new cars.</p>
<p><a href="http://Carfax.com" rel="external">Carfax.com</a> provides car-history reports using vehicle-identification numbers, or VINs. For a $30 fee, used-car buyers can use Carfax.com for 30 days. This report shows a vehicle&#8217;s history such as if it was a rental or not, how many different owners it had, how long each owner possessed the vehicle and where it came from. Tips pop up within these reports, including one that warned me about &#8220;curbstoning,&#8221; a term that describes an individual without a dealer&#8217;s license looking to sell a number of cars by posing as a private seller.</p>
<p>As can be expected, many newspaper Web sites offer automobile sections that display digitized classified ads, so be sure to check your local paper&#8217;s Web site.</p>
<p>At the end of the day, test-driving a car will be a true test as to whether or not you like it &#8212; no matter how much research you&#8217;ve done online. But knowing your stuff before you visit a dealership can save money and time.</p>
