<p>It&#8217;s also bringing former Disney chief executive officer Michael Eisner on board as a strategic adviser. </p>
<p>TaskRabbit has nabbed $17.8 million in a Series B round of funding from existing investors, as well as from Lightspeed Venture Partners, Allen &#038; Company and the Tornante Company, the investment firm run by Eisner. <div id="attachment_153352" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 390px"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/TaskRabbitRobertGodwin-380x251.png" alt="" title="TaskRabbit" width="380" height="251" class="size-medium wp-image-153352" /><p class="wp-caption-text">Photo Courtesy of Robert Godwin/Flickr</p></div></p>
<p>Lightspeed managing director Justin Caldbeck and Shasta Ventures’ Sean Flynn will also join the board of directors.</p>
<p>TaskRabbit CEO Eric Grosse said the company plans to spend the money on hiring engineers and designers, building out more mobile products &#8212; including an upcoming Android app &#8212; and expanding its presence in U.S. cities and abroad. Fans of the service can expect to see it become available in Seattle and Portland in the next couple of months, while international expansion could happen by the end of 2012. </p>
<p>While the funding is notable in itself, the addition of Eisner as a strategic advisor could bring to light the possibility of entertainment opportunities for TaskRabbit. Eisner approached after seeing an ABC News special with Diane Sawyer this past September; the segment featuring TaskRabbit drove 6.5 million users to the company&#8217;s Web site and overwhelmed its servers. </p>
<p>&#8220;He really saw the potential in what we&#8217;re building. Every single task that’s posted and completed is a story, and even the TaskRabbits themselves are stories,&#8221; said TaskRabbit founder Leah Busque, adding that Eisner&#8217;s experience in entertainment is a big asset to the start-up.</p>
<p>TaskRabbit was founded in 2008 by Busque, a former IBM-er, who now holds a chief product role at the company; tech veteran Grosse acts as chief executive officer. Busque has said the idea came to her when she and her husband were looking for a friend or neighbor to get dog food for them on a cold winter night in Boston.</p>
<p>The company works by creating an online community of runners &#8212; a.k.a. &#8220;rabbits&#8221; &#8212; who perform errands, and bidders, who are willing to pay the rabbits. TaskRabbit takes a 15 percent cut of each duty performed. According to Busque, who joined us on The Wall Street Journal&#8217;s <a href="http://online.wsj.com/video/next-big-thing-in-tech-taskrabbit/100B1424-62C6-4F0C-9013-B96CF1FCD1CD.html">&#8220;Digits&#8221;</a> show this past fall, the runners are vetted through a multi-step approval process, which includes background checks and video interviews.  </p>
<p>The company just received $5 million this past May from Shasta Ventures, First Round Capital and others, following a $1.8 million round of seed funding. TaskRabbit says that since closing its Series A funding in May it has tripled its monthly task volume and net revenue, while increasing its customer base sevenfold, though it declined to say how many customers it has in total.</p>
<p>TaskRabbit isn’t the only start-up looking to outsource garbage-hauling, laundry-washing and dog-walking (and in some cases, even <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204443404577052353225234154.html">worm-bin managing</a>): New competing platform Zaarly raised $14 million from Kleiner Perkins and Sands Capital Ventures <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/10/25/zaarly-reels-in-14-million-meg-whitman/">this October</a>, and also added Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman as a board member. Another company, <a href="http://gigwalk.com/">GigWalk</a>, takes a slightly different approach, with a mobile app that utilizes the power of GPS to create a marketplace for on-the-spot small jobs.</p>

<p>But those factors didn&#8217;t prevent Chelsea Clinton from landing a plum assignment: joining the board of Barry Diller&#8217;s Internet media holding company.</p>
<p>In her new role, the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will be the youngest member of IAC&#8217;s board by seven years.</p>
<p>Fellow directors include Michael Eisner, former chief of Walt Disney Co., and Edgar Bronfman Jr., chairman of Warner Music Group.</p>

<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-102527" title="FacebookCredits_giftcards" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/07/FacebookCredits_giftcards-380x166.png" alt="" width="380" height="166" />Terms of the deal were not disclosed.</p>
<p>GMG is a publisher of digital currency cards and works closely with Facebook to manage, distribute, market and manufacture the cards.</p>
<p>The cards, which are sold at major retailers including Best Buy, RadioShack, Target and GameStop, are good for Facebook Credits, which is the digital currency used inside all games on the social network.</p>
<p>The digital currency market is growing as more games are played online for free and give players the option of buying virtual goods inside the game. Rather than having to enter a credit card number online, game cards can be conveniently purchased in cash and redeemed online. Another big player in the industry is Atlanta-based <a href="http://www.incomm.com/aboutus.do">InComm</a>.</p>
<p>Topps, which was acquired and taken private by Michael Eisner&#8217;s Tornante Company and Madison Dearborn Partners in 2007, says it will leverage the acquisition to enter the digital currency market, while bringing manufacturing, design and collectibility skills to digital currency cards.</p>
<p>Rob Goldberg, the CEO of GMG, will become the VP and general manager of the digital currency business, reporting to Topps CEO Ryan O&#8217;Hara. GMG will represent the company&#8217;s third business division in addition to trading cards and confections, such as Bazooka bubble gum.</p>
<p>GMG&#8217;s other executives, Tim Pechmann and Jeff Mickeal, will also join Topps.</p>
<p>GMG works with about 45 clients, including the NFL and game companies like THQ.</p>

<p>After Disney named two longtime Internet execs&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants/">Playdom&#8217;s John Pleasants and Jimmy Pitaro of Yahoo</a>&#8211;as co-presidents of its Internet unit, BoomTown did a longer interview with CEO Bob Iger about the entertainment giant&#8217;s next Web moves.</p>
<p>I always enjoy talking digital with Iger&#8211;who is pictured above in an interview I did with him in 2006 at the fourth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference&#8211;since he has been one of the old media moguls who seems unafraid of the challenges of new media.</p>
<p>While appropriately wary, Iger acted early and often in exploring digital initiatives at Disney (DIS) that others in Hollywood&#8217;s and New York&#8217;s media worlds were loath to consider.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have tried to keep two obvious philosophies,&#8221; Iger said in a phone interview yesterday. &#8220;First, that our current business not get in the way of adopting new technologies, and, second, that our business belongs on these new platforms.&#8221;</p>
<p>Easy to say, of course, but it&#8217;s still nice to hear, given the longtime, incessant and ultimately wearying push-and-pull between those who make bucks making content and those who make bucks making technology.</p>
<p>&#8220;My premise is that technology is about an opportunity for us,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;And we cannot will it away and should not&#8230;because you can&#8217;t stop these things from happening.&#8221;</p>

<p>That&#8217;s presumably the impetus behind the hiring of Pleasants and Pitaro (picture here, left to right).</p>
<p>With an assist by recent Disney board member and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Pitaro came to his attention earlier this year, Iger said.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100928/exclusive-yahoo-exec-churn-continues-with-media-head-pitaro-ready-to-bolt">Pitaro left his job as SVP of Media at Yahoo</a> (YHOO) last week.</p>
<p>And Pleasants was CEO of Playdom, the online social gaming company that Disney <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100727/disney-purchases-playdom">acquired for $763 million</a> in late July.</p>
<p>The pair, who will report directly to Iger as co-chiefs of the Disney Interactive Media Group, replace outgoing head Steve Wadsworth.</p>
<p>The shift is a big move by the entertainment giant and yet another attempt to clarify and bolster its Web strategy, which has had a long and often rocky history.</p>
<p>Under the previous regime of former CEO Michael Eisner, for example, Disney bought search engine Infoseek and tried to create a portal called Go.com.</p>
<p>That failed, and was one of many efforts to define the media company&#8217;s Web goals.</p>
<p>More recently, in 2008, Disney gathered most of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080604/disney-combines-digital-units-heres-the-iger-memo/">Internet properties within DIMG</a> under Wadsworth.</p>
<p>Still, money-making has not been part of the mix. In its most recent quarter, DIMG lost $65 million on revenue of $197 million.</p>

<p>In the interview about the new structure, Iger said: &#8220;I think we&#8217;ve built a framework of assets, and now is the time to create a structure in a more focused way. In splitting the divisions, we can focus more on them better and in a way they deserve.&#8221;</p>
<p>He outlined the new set-up, which will have Pleasants focus on the online gaming and mobile landscape and Pitaro on the Web arena.</p>
<p>Iger said he felt Pleasants and Pitaro brought different backgrounds to the task, as well as longtime experience in the Internet arena.</p>
<p>He said that upon considering a fresh approach, he felt that Wadsworth was &#8220;spread too thin,&#8221; given all the various online arenas for Disney.</p>
<p>In fact, today, Disney owns a number of big Internet properties, including Disney.com, Family.com and Club Penguin, although there does not seem to be a particularly cohesive strategy among them.</p>
<p>Of course, that&#8217;s no surprise, given it is all part of a multifaceted media company with a variety of businesses.</p>
<p>Due to its powerful content assets, said Iger, it might be a perfect time for a more cogent plan. With the explosion of devices, such as the Apple (AAPL) iPad and others, the importance of cooperation between content and technology is more critical than ever.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think a lot of technology companies are really finally ready to handle more premium content in a way that is beneficial to all of us,&#8221; said Iger.</p>

<p>And, he added, it was time for Disney to get more involved in technology, which was the reason for the purchase of Playdom. The move has made it more a publisher than a licensor.</p>
<p>&#8220;If we wanted to get significant in size, we need the investment to be greater,&#8221; Iger said about the big payout to get into the fast-growing social gaming arena.</p>
<p>And that has meant less emphasis on console games, on which he said Disney had focused too much in the past.</p>
<p>No longer&#8211;now Iger said he has planted Playdom, as well as its purchase of the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100701/reports-disney-buys-iphone-game-startup-tapulous">Tapulous music app start-up</a>, in a spanking new facility in Palo Alto, Calif., right in the heart of Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>&#8220;We need to be part of the culture and world there in a significant way,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;And I believe I have convinced the senior team within Disney that Playdom is a huge opportunity for them.&#8221;</p>
<p>That includes online gaming related to units such as sports at ESPN, as well as other Disney brands, such as the theme parks or Marvel, into Playdom games.</p>

<p>&#8220;In certain areas, we will be very aggressive with our content and in others less aggressive, to the extent that each offers us revenues,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;Obviously, where there is potential cannibalization, we will be a little more careful&#8230;but we are going to push forward.&#8221;</p>
<p>When asked about the most obvious management issue&#8211;the possibility of clashing with two heads of one division (<em>MySpace, anyone?</em>), Iger said that while there was overlap, he thought the jobs Pitaro and Pleasants had to do were also wide-ranging and different enough.</p>
<p>Plus, added Iger, &#8220;They both report directly to me and I am there to see to it that it works.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, as Disney continues to move forward into the digital future, the content and technology buck stops, as it should, at Iger.</p>

<p>Yesterday, after Disney named two longtime Internet execs&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants/">Playdom&#8217;s John Pleasants and Jimmy Pitaro of Yahoo</a>&#8211;as co-presidents of its Internet unit, BoomTown did a longer interview with CEO Robert Iger about the entertainment giant&#8217;s next Web moves.</p>
<p>I always enjoy talking digital with Iger&#8211;who is pictured above in an interview I did with him in 2006 at the fourth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference&#8211;since he has been one of the old media moguls who seems unafraid of the challenges of new media.</p>
<p>While appropriately wary, Iger acted early and often in exploring digital initiatives at Disney (DIS) that others in Hollywood&#8217;s and New York&#8217;s media worlds were loathe to consider.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have tried to keep two obvious philosophies,&#8221; Iger said in a phone interview yesterday. &#8220;First, that our current business not get in the way of adopting new technologies, and, second, that our business belongs on these new platforms.&#8221;</p>
<p>Easy to say, of course, but it&#8217;s still nice to hear, given the longtime, incessant and ultimately wearying push-and-pull between those who make bucks making content and those who make bucks making technology.</p>
<p>&#8220;My premise is that technology is about an opportunity for us,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;And we cannot will it away and should not&#8230;because you can&#8217;t stop these things from happening.&#8221;</p>

<p>With an assist by recent Disney board member and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Pitaro came to his attention earlier this year, Iger said.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100928/exclusive-yahoo-exec-churn-continues-with-media-head-pitaro-ready-to-bolt">Pitaro left his job as SVP of Media at Yahoo</a> (YHOO) last week.</p>
<p>And Pleasants was CEO of Playdom, the online social gaming company that Disney <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100727/disney-purchases-playdom">acquired for $763 million</a> in late July.</p>
<p>The pair, who will report directly to Iger as co-chiefs of the Disney Interactive Media Group, replace outgoing head Steve Wadsworth.</p>
<p>The shift is a big move by the entertainment giant and yet another attempt to clarify and bolster its Web strategy, which has had a long and often rocky history.</p>
<p>Under the previous regime of former CEO Michael Eisner, for example, Disney bought search engine Infoseek and tried to create a portal called Go.com.</p>
<p>That failed, and was one of many efforts to define the media company&#8217;s Web goals.</p>
<p>More recently, in 2008, Disney gathered most of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080604/disney-combines-digital-units-heres-the-iger-memo/">Internet properties within DIMG</a>, under Wadsworth.</p>
<p>Still, money-making not been part of the mix. In its most recent quarter, DIMG lost $65 million on revenue of $197 million.</p>

<p>In the interview about the new structure, Iger said: &#8220;I think we&#8217;ve built a framework of assets, and now is the time to create a structure in a more focused way. In splitting the divisions, we can focus more on them better and in a way they deserve.&#8221;</p>
<p>He outlined the new set-up, which will have Pleasants focus on the online gaming and mobile landscape and Pitaro on the Web arena.</p>
<p>Iger said he felt Pleasants and Pitaro brought different backgrounds to the task, as well as longtime experience in the Internet arena.</p>
<p>He said that upon considering a fresh approach, he felt that Wadsworth was &#8220;spread too thin,&#8221; given all the various online arenas for Disney.</p>
<p>In fact, today, Disney owns a number of big Internet properties, including Disney.com, Family.com and Club Penguin, although there does not seem to be a particularly cohesive strategy among them.</p>
<p>Of course, that&#8217;s not surprise, given it is all part of a multifaceted media company with a variety of businesses.</p>
<p>Due to its powerful content assets, said Iger, it might be a perfect time for a more cogent plan. With the explosion of devices, such as the Apple (AAPL) iPad and others, the importance of cooperation between content and technology is more critical than ever.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think a lot of technology companies are really finally ready to handle more premium content in a way that is beneficial to all of us,&#8221; said Iger.</p>

<p>And, he added, it was time for Disney to get more involved in technology, which was the reason for the purchase of Playdom. The move has made it more a publisher than a licensor.</p>
<p>&#8220;If we wanted to get significant in size, we need the investment to be greater,&#8221; Iger said about the big payout to get into the fast-growing social gaming arena.</p>
<p>And that has meant less emphasis on console games, on which he said Disney had focused too much in the past.</p>
<p>No longer&#8211;now Iger said has planted Playdom, as well as its purchase of the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100701/reports-disney-buys-iphone-game-startup-tapulous">Tapulous music app start-up</a>, in a spanking new facility in Palo Alto, Calif., right in the heart of Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>&#8220;We need to be part of the culture and world there in a significant way,&#8221; said Iger. &#8220;And I believe I have convinced the senior team within Disney that Playdom is a huge opportunity for them.&#8221;</p>
<p>That includes online gaming related to units such as sports at ESPN, as well as other Disney brands, such as the theme parks or Marvel, into Playdom games.</p>

<p>As an interesting aside, Iger said that he was introduced to Pitaro via Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, as well as her husband, David Goldberg. Sandberg is now on the board of Disney, and Pitaro came to Yahoo via Launch Media, which was co-founded by Goldberg.</p>

He will also continue to run Playdom, the fast-growing social games publishing company acquired by Disney earlier this year.</p>
<p>James Pitaro, an experienced Internet executive known for consistently delivering great branded web experiences to consumers, will oversee Disney Online, the home of Disney branded web and social media sites.</p>
<p>The new structure at DIMG is intended to enhance the strategic focus and responsiveness of the company’s digital games and Disney Online businesses in a marketplace characterized by swiftly evolving consumer behavior and technologies. The structure is designed so that the two businesses can share consumer insights and technological resources and jointly take advantage of growth opportunities.</p>

<p>In leading Disney Online, Pitaro will be responsible for enhancing the consumer experience on the company’s numerous Disney-branded web and social media sites, including Disney.com, the number one global site for kids and families, and Family.com. Pitaro will also oversee Disney’s social media marketing agency, DigiSynd.</p>
<p>Pitaro joins Disney from Yahoo! Inc. where he was Vice President and Head of Media. In that role, he significantly expanded Yahoo!&#8217;s original video, branded entertainment and editorial content and pioneered using data to enhance the consumer web experience. Pitaro led the successful expansion of Yahoo! Sports prior to being named to lead all of Yahoo!’s media properties, including its news, finance, entertainment and lifestyle sites. Previously, Pitaro ran Business Affairs for online music site Launch Media and practiced law at several New York firms.</p>

The company let go of the remainder of its workforce yesterday, and sources say it plans on filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection in the near future.</p>
<p>Veoh, which started as YouTube-style site, has struggled for years to find a business model that works and has burned through $70 million in funding from name-brand investors like Goldman Sachs (GS), Time Warner (TWX), Intel&#8217;s (INTC) venture arm, Spark Capital and former Disney (DIS) CEO Michael Eisner.</p>
<p>CEO Dmitry Shapiro declined to comment. He is <a href="http://twitter.com/dmitry/statuses/8980277409">tweeting</a>, though:</p>
<p><a rel="lightbox" href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/02/shapiro-tweet.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-16238" title="shapiro tweet" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/02/shapiro-tweet.png" alt="" width="350" height="120" /></a></p>
<p>UPDATE: Shapiro is talking now. Here&#8217;s <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100211/universal-music-group-didnt-help-veoh-but-it-didnt-kill-it/">my conversation with him</a>, and a <a href="http://www.dmitryshapiro.com/blog/?p=160">blog post</a> he penned himself.</p>
<p>This one has been a long time coming. Last year, the San Diego-based company laid off about a third of its staff, replaced its CEO with founder Shapiro and focused on developing a Web browser-based app. Shapiro has also been actively looking for a buyer, but a copyright lawsuit with Universal Music Group made the site a difficult sale.</p>
<p>The company was buoyed last fall when it effectively won that lawsuit: In a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090914/universal-music-gets-slapped-in-court-what-does-that-mean-for-veoh-and-youtube/">sweeping ruling</a>, a federal judge ruled that Veoh was protected against the music label&#8217;s copyright claims by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.</p>
<p>That decision gave Veoh executives the confidence to try to gather up yet another funding round. And as recently as January, the company thought it might be able to convince its existing investors to pony up yet again.</p>
<p>But that plan collapsed in the past few weeks, sources said. It&#8217;s striking that Veoh couldn&#8217;t find any buyer willing to pay up for either its technology or its audience, which was supposedly at 25 million uniques last spring.</p>

<p>Depends on who you ask, of course.</p>
<p>Executives at Veoh say Judge A. Howard Matz has given them a new lease on life, and at least some of the company&#8217;s investors are doing some <a href="http://twitter.com/ToddDOwl/status/3983519223">chest-beating</a>. Universal, the world&#8217;s largest music label, says it&#8217;s confident it will win an appeal.</p>
<p>You can get the same split opinion by asking two different companies that happen to be locked in a similar fight. Executives at Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube, which is trying to fend off a copyright suit filed by Viacom (VIA), say the Veoh ruling bolsters their case. You can guess what Viacom says.</p>
<p>The gist of the fight: Universal says Veoh didn&#8217;t try hard enough to keep illegally uploaded material off the video site; Veoh says it made a good-faith effort. Matz agreed with Veoh and tossed out Universal&#8217;s claims.</p>
<p>Even if you disregard the posturing, it&#8217;s fair to say there&#8217;s a genuine debate over the ruling&#8217;s meaning. Veoh, along with some of my bloggy colleagues, is treating the decision as the final word on Web copyright disputes, or at least those that involve the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Millennium_Copyright_Act">Digital Millennium Copyright Act</a>.</p>
<p>And Matz certainly slapped Universal around. But it&#8217;s worth noting that copyright owners have lost Web cases in the Ninth District before, but ultimately won on appeal. Ask <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grokster">Grokster</a>, the now-defunct file-sharing network that dissolved after a 2005 Supreme Court ruling.</p>
<p>You can read all of Matz&#8217;s judgment at the bottom of this post. But this excerpt, in which he argues that simply having illegal material on your site isn&#8217;t a crime, and neither is knowing about it (at least, in a general sense), gives you a good idea of Matz&#8217;s thrust and tone:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>No doubt it is common knowledge that most websites that allow users to contribute material contain infringing items. If such general awareness were enough to raise a “red flag,” the DMCA safe harbor would not serve its purpose of &#8220;facilitat[ing] the robust development and world-wide expansion of electronic commerce, communications, research, development, and education in the digital age,” and “balanc[ing] the interests of content owners, on-line and other service providers, and information users in a way that will foster the continued development of electronic commerce and the growth of the Internet.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Legal debate aside, the ruling does give a practical benefit for Veoh. It allows the company to fetch a higher price on the auction block.</p>
<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090706/is-veoh-the-next-video-site-to-go/">CEO Dmitry Shapiro has been shopping the site to bidders over the summer</a>, and as of a few months ago, he was willing to accept less than the $70 million investors like Time Warner (TWX), Goldman Sachs (GS) and former Disney (DIS) CEO Michael Eisner have poured into the site.</p>
<p>Selling a Web video site in 2009 is a tough challenge without a handicap, but the lawsuit was a big one. It was a huge time-and-money suck&#8211;Veoh may have spent as much as $6 million fighting the case in the last two years&#8211;and more important, the unresolved case was a huge liability. Who wants to buy a lawsuit?</p>
<p>Now, Shapiro says, Veoh&#8217;s options include not selling at all. He insists that some of Veoh&#8217;s existing backers are willing to recapitalize the company and that new investors might join in as well.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll take him at his word, but if I had to bet, I&#8217;d wager that Veoh ends up getting acquired sooner than later. Maybe quite soon&#8211;the company has a board meeting today.</p>
<p>Wonder what they&#8217;ll talk about?</p>

<p>A good bet: <a href="http://www.veoh.com/">Veoh</a>, one of the best-funded would-be YouTubes. Multiple sources tell me the company is aggressively marketing itself in hopes of finding a buyer.</p>
<p>And if a deal does go through, it will result in a loss for the company&#8217;s high-profile backers, who include former Disney (DIS) CEO Michael Eisner and Goldman Sachs (GS). I&#8217;m told that CEO Dmitry Shapiro has been shopping the company at prices below $70 million, which is the amount investors have sunk into the portal since 2005.</p>
<p>What happened to Veoh? The same thing that happened to almost every other Web video portal that isn&#8217;t Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube or Hulu: Not enough audience, not enough ad revenue, too many costs.</p>
<p>Veoh claims an audience of about 25 million users, which is less than auditors like comScore (SCOR) report, and is, in any case, an order of magnitude smaller than YouTube&#8217;s. Sources tell me the company lost money on revenue of about $6 million last year. Sales are up and executives are optimistic it could break even this year, but the trajectory isn&#8217;t high enough to keep Veoh afloat as an independent company.</p>
<p>Complicating matters for Veoh is a costly court battle with Vivendi&#8217;s Universal Music Group, which accuses the company of copyright violations. That two-year-old fight has cost the start-up millions in legal fees.</p>
<p>The fact that Veoh&#8217;s backers include media-savvy players like Time Warner (TWX); former Viacom executives Tom Freston and Jonathan Dolgen; and Spark Capital, one of the primary investors in Twitter, hasn&#8217;t been enough to help the company extricate itself from the suit.</p>
<p>In April, Veoh laid off a good chunk of its staff, replaced CEO Steve Mitgang with Shapiro, the company&#8217;s founder, and focused its energy on a new &#8220;Video Compass&#8221; player that users are supposed to download and install in their Web browsers.</p>
<p>At the time, Shapiro said that the company&#8217;s Web portal business was a success but acknowledged that <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090401/video-site-veoh-cuts-staff-boots-ceo-bets-on-browser-plug-in/">&#8220;quite frankly, there are a lot of things like that.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>So who would buy Veoh? Theoretically, at the right price, the company could be attractive to a large Web player like a Yahoo (YHOO), which used to be a big player in video back when video was a small market. Or the company could try marketing its technical expertise to a cable/telco company like Time Warner Cable (TWC) that hasn&#8217;t done much with online video but says it will soon.</p>
<p>But rival Web portal Joost tried making the same pitch to various buyers over the last few months and couldn&#8217;t get a deal done. Last week Joost laid off most of its staff and said it would try to go it alone as a services company.</p>
<p>This kind of flux is now par for the course among the big Web portals that thought they could rival YouTube, or at least secure second place. But Google&#8217;s lead over everyone else in video gets bigger every day, and its primary competitor is now Hulu, which has the advantage of premium content from its Hollywood owners&#8211;Disney, GE&#8217;s (GE) NBC Universal, and News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) Fox.</p>
<p>In addition to Veoh and Joost, <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-industry-moves-dailymotion-taps-cedric-tournay-as-new-ceo/">France&#8217;s DailyMotion has swapped out CEOs in recent months</a> and is reportedly looking to raise money. Meanwhile, Metacafe, yet another video hub, has hired boutique investment bank Think Equity to look for &#8220;strategic investors to provide expansion capital.&#8221;</p>
<p>Metacafe CEO Erick Hachenburg says his company doesn&#8217;t need the money and can survive on its own if it doesn&#8217;t go ahead with a deal. &#8220;You would expect in this marketplace that you&#8217;re going to have a shakeout, and the stronger players are going to make it,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>That sounds right. The question is whether we&#8217;ll have more than two players left when this is all over.</p>

<p>Besides the huge amount of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080904/the-online-governator-sarah-palin-video-mashups/">spoof humor videos that have popped up everywhere</a>, both professional and amateur, as well as the explosive number of viewings of online videos of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080915/as-promised-tina-fey-as-sarah-palin-as-tina-fey/">Tina Fey impersonating the Republican vice presidential candidate</a> and Alaska governor.</p>

<p>Keep clicking on the door and you get three different images. But don&#8217;t click on the deer the third time&#8211;trust me, it is much worse than the fate that befell Bambi&#8217;s mom.</p>
<p>Also, don&#8217;t click the red phone twice, or it&#8217;s curtains for us all. As the spoof Palin says: &#8220;Uh-oh!&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>You would have to have been under a rock not to have heard about the controversial piece in Vanity Fair magazine this month about the escapades of former President Bill Clinton since he left office.</p>
<p>Called <a href="http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2008/07/clinton200807">&#8220;The Comeback Id&#8221;</a> (oh, how <em>pun-ny</em>!), the article has gotten a lot of attention for pointing out the rampant speculation that Clinton&#8217;s well-known penchant for marital infidelity had returned.</p>
<p><img src='http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/01/ron_burkle_thumb.jpg' alt='ronburkle' /></p>
<p>And the reason for that disturbing development, besides Clinton himself? The piece actually placed a good bit of the blame on Clinton&#8217;s close friend, grocery magnate and billionaire Ron Burkle (pictured here), who also has been one of the key directors at Yahoo (YHOO) in its takeover fight with Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a wonder Burkle can focus on the turmoil at Yahoo, given how busy he appears to be in the article corrupting Clinton both personally and&#8211;worse&#8211;professionally, via some questionable investments the pair had made through Burkle&#8217;s Yucaipa Companies.</p>
<p>Writer Todd Purdum paints a decidedly unattractive picture of Burkle, noting even the tasteless nickname of Burkle&#8217;s plane these days, in a portrayal so rough that Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang&#8217;s tough treatment by the press recently looks like a walk in the park.</p>

<p>Well, almost.</p>
<p>In what amounts to a rant by Carl Icahn (pictured here), <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121251736489942015.html?mod=hps_us_whats_news">The Wall Street Journal gives the billionaire investor lots of room to kvetch</a> about what he thinks of Yang, including asserting that he will oust the Yahoo founder if he wins his proxy fight against the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am amazed at the lengths that Jerry Yang and the board went to entrench themselves in this situation,&#8221; said Icahn.</p>
<p>Apparently, Icahn was the only one who didn&#8217;t get the memo that Yahoo has been consistently obstreperous about Microsoft&#8217;s many overtures, since&#8211;well, let&#8217;s do the exact calculations&#8211;<em>forever</em>. And a day.</p>
<p>Still, Icahn perseveres and hangs this old entrenched management chestnut on a lawsuit that was recently filed by shareholders that points to the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080219/retaining-yahoo-talent-enhanced-severance/">massive and costly severance plan</a> Yahoo sneakily put into place as a ploy to fend off Microsoft.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s no longer a mystery to me why Microsoft&#8217;s offer isn&#8217;t around,&#8221; Icahn said. &#8220;How can Yahoo keep saying they&#8217;re willing to negotiate and sell the company on the one hand, while at the same time they&#8217;re completely sabotaging the process without telling anyone.&#8221;</p>
<p>How? By Yang opening his mouth, that&#8217;s how, and then doing nothing much.</p>
<p>As a student of this lugubrious style of Olympic dithering, I would point Icahn to Yang&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071025/day-100/">100-day Sacred Cow VisionQuest</a>, well before this soap opera got started.</p>
<p>You need to catch up pronto, Carl!</p>

<p>And speaking of people irked by Yang of late, investor Gordon Crawford (pictured here) also made some news yesterday with his investment in Veoh Networks, part of a $30 million round that included Intel Capital and Adobe Systems (ADBE).</p>
<p>Existing investors in the not-YouTube video service&#8211;Shelter Capital, Spark Capital, Goldman Sachs (GS), Michael Eisner’s Tornante Company, Time Warner Investments (TWX) and Jonathan Dolgen&#8211;also ponied up more money.</p>
<p>Crawford, the SVP of Capital Research Global Investors, manages a massive portfolio, and it is one of Yahoo&#8217;s biggest shareholders.</p>
<p>And, unlike Veoh, Yahoo is an investment <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080506/a-history-lesson-for-jerry-yang-it-sticks-in-my-crawford/">Crawford has not been happy with recently</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am extremely angry at Jerry Yang and at the so-called independent board,&#8221; he said in an interview a month ago. &#8220;I&#8217;m hoping that there is such an outpouring of outrage that the board is embarrassed into revisiting this thing, but I&#8217;m not optimistic about that.&#8221;</p>
<p>And by independent board, by the way, he meant directors like&#8211;you guessed it&#8211;Ron Burkle!</p>
<p>At least Burkle&#8217;s not to blame for the so-so, lots-and-lots-missing&#8211;<em>Google? What Google? (GOOG)</em>&#8211;piece in the same Vanity Fair issue, an oral history of the Internet.</p>
<p>Called <a href="http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2008/07/internet200807">&#8220;How the Web Was Won,&#8221;</a> it makes the founding of the world&#8217;s most important medium seem awfully dull.</p>

<p>I&#8217;d recommend instead&#8211;as any sentient being would&#8211;the <a href="http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2008/07/jolie200807">cover story on Angelina Jolie</a>, with this sharp quote from her: &#8220;In my father&#8217;s generation, the product was 80% of what you were putting into the world, and your personal life was 20%. It now seems that 80% of the product I put out is silly, made-up stories and what I&#8217;m wearing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Or not wearing, in the case of the pictures of Jolie in this article.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here&#8217;s a little video <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080130/kara-visits-natpe-in-las-vegas/">I made while in Las Vegas</a> at the National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) yesterday.</p>
<p>The one-time mighty conference has obviously lagged, as the way the entertainment industry buys and sells programming has drastically changed over the years.</p>
<p>Also a concern: the impact of interactive technologies&#8211;digital issues seemed to be the biggest topic for attendees.</p>

<p>I was there, for example, for a panel&#8211;called &#8220;Possibilities and Perils of Internet TV&#8221;&#8211;about online video with Walt Disney head Michael Eisner (pictured here), former Viacom head Jonathan Dolgen and Dmitry Shapiro, founder and CIO of Veoh.</p>
<p>Both Eisner and Dolgen are investors in Veoh&#8211;one of the many online video services out there. And Eisner has been dabbling in the new-media content space with several efforts at original programming.</p>
<p>The conversation was lively, with Eisner bullish that the online video market would explode in the coming years, both in terms of influence and profitability.</p>
<p>He compared the situation to the early days of cable television and also noted that it would take a new generation of talent to make it happen at lower costs.</p>
<p>And Eisner quite correctly noted that a lot of the new stuff that is being produced for the Web from Hollywood is simply weak material that failed to get on television.</p>
<p>But he did point to all sorts of interesting experimentation going on, and said he was convinced that advertisers would eventually follow.</p>
<p>Both he and also Dolgen expected the advent of better editorial control and programming efforts would increase audience.</p>
<p>I was less sanguine, in my ongoing role as official grump of the Web, wondering how overblown production costs and this-is-the-way-we-do-it stubbornness in Hollywood would change.</p>
<p>More importantly, I am still waiting for better answers on how really serious money will be made in the medium.</p>
<p>In any case, here is a short video I made, with interviews with Shapiro and Dolgen. Of course, Mr. Online Video, Eisner, declined to be interviewed by me and my little annoying Flip camera:</p>

<p>I am back in Sin City to appear on a panel at the National Association of Television Program Executives (<a href="http://www.natpe.org">NATPE</a>) conference here today, along with former Walt Disney head Michael Eisner, former Viacom head Jonathan Dolgen and Dmitry Shapiro, founder and CIO of Veoh.</p>
<p>Titled &#8220;Possibilities and Perils of Internet TV,&#8221; it should be an interesting discussion, since I think it is all peril at this point with very little to show in the possibility column.</p>
<p>While there have been a lot of attempts to create Internet TV&#8211;and by this I don&#8217;t mean delivering traditional television via IP&#8211;most of what is out there is repurposed professional content that Hollywood hopes we will think is newfangled and, via easy-to-post user-generated material, a more massive version of &#8220;America&#8217;s Funniest Home Videos.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, bad Web programs and a whole lot of videos of cats on skateboards. As for profits from all this: Not so much.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, the television industry is changing dramatically. With the backdrop of the writers&#8217; strike, the situation is even more volatile, as viewers migrate away from the network model and toward, well, who knows?</p>
<p>Both Eisner and Dolgen are investors in Veoh&#8211;one of the many online video services out there, this one aimed at professional content. And Eisner has been dabbling in the new media content space to mixed results.</p>
<p>I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071108/hollywood-hoo-ha-part-2478/">wrote about Eisner back in November</a> when he jumped on the Blame-Steve-Jobs bandwagon, saying Apple was to blame for Hollywood&#8217;s woes.</p>
<p>Said Eisner&#8211;whose tense relationship with Jobs was well known&#8211;then: &#8220;[Movie and television studios] make deals with Steve Jobs, who takes them to the cleaners. They make all these kinds of things, and who&#8217;s making money? Apple! They should get a piece of Apple. If I was a union, I’d be striking up wherever he is.&#8221;</p>
<p>I will be sure to ask him about that comment.</p>

<p>We did not think it could get worse than <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071030/nbcus-jeff-zucker-turns-lemonade-into-lemons/">NBC honcho Jeff Zucker</a> (pictured here), who demanded a vig for every iPod sold because &#8220;Apple sold millions of dollars worth of hardware off the back of our content and made a lot of money.&#8221;</p>
<p>And then came <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071108/hollywood-hoo-ha-part-2478/">former Disney pooh-bah Michael Eisner</a>, who blamed the writers&#8217; strike on Apple head Steve Jobs, because he was ruining the entertainment business with that darn iPod.</p>
<p>&#8220;[Movie and television studios] make deals with Steve Jobs, who takes them to the cleaners. They make all these kinds of things, and who&#8217;s making money? Apple! They should get a piece of Apple,&#8221; said Eisner. &#8220;If I was a union, I&#8217;d be striking up wherever he is.&#8221;</p>

<p>And now comes Morris, who heads up the Universal Music Group and who was <a href="http://www.wired.com/entertainment/music/magazine/15-12/mf_morris?currentPage=all">interviewed by Seth Mnookin of Wired</a>, trying again to skewer Jobs.</p>
<p>Of course, he ends up poking his own petard. From his <em>private dining room</em> (I kid you not) at the company HQ, the 68-year-old veteran music exec talked about plans to take aim at Apple&#8217;s popular music player and service, blamed college students for the music industry&#8217;s troubles and generally sounded like a woefully out-of-touch exec.</p>

<p>Says Morris in a refrain you would think he might have gotten over after all this time and all those stolen songs ago: &#8220;Is it correct that people share their music, fill up these devices with music they haven&#8217;t paid for? If you had Coca-Cola coming through the faucet in your kitchen, how much would you be willing to pay for Coca-Cola? There you go.&#8221;</p>
<p>We know, we know, there you go. Piracy is wrong! We agree! Of course, that begs a solution.</p>
<p>And Morris&#8217;s have not been so very consistent. On one hand, he&#8217;s pissed and, thus, has aggressively gone after companies like YouTube and MySpace for copyright infringement and has held up Microsoft by taking a piece of Zune sales. On the other, Universal has offered some unprotected songs on sites like Amazon and has been doing well in the ringtone business.</p>
<p>Still, Morris seems proud of coming off as an anti-geek, a stance that has apparently messed up the good thing the music business had going&#8211;mostly milking consumers and not delivering product in the way they wanted it.</p>
<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no one in the record company that&#8217;s a technologist. That&#8217;s a misconception writers make all the time, that the record industry missed this. They didn&#8217;t. They just didn&#8217;t know what to do,&#8221; said Morris, without a trace of regret about the rank incompetence of dealing with the changes created by digital distribution. &#8220;It&#8217;s like if you were suddenly asked to operate on your dog to remove his kidney. What would you do?&#8221;</p>
<p>Mnookin correctly suggests getting a vet. But I would go a step further: Get a new dog.</p>
<p>Instead, he is kicking a few others, such as Jobs, mostly for out-negotiating the labels to get them to sell on iTunes. &#8220;We were just grateful that someone was selling online,&#8221; said Morris. &#8220;The problem is, he became a gatekeeper. We make a lot of money from him, and suddenly you&#8217;re wearing golden handcuffs. We would hate to give up that income.&#8221;</p>
<p>Which is why he and others are trying to blow up the whole thing, by attempting to do damage to iTunes by pulling songs off the service (evil to consumers who love the iPod, but it could work) and offering alternatives like a competing subscription music service that seems destined for failure too.</p>

<p>Worst of all, Morris incorrectly compares the music industry to the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shmoo">Shmoo</a> of the cartoon Li&#8217;l Abner, as if the creature was a loser. In fact, the Shmoo is beloved and helpful to all, as well as delicious and entertaining, characteristics the music industry could take a clue from.</p>
<p>&#8220;Shmoos haint make believe,&#8221; said Li&#8217;l Abner. &#8220;The hull (whole) earth is one.&#8221;</p>
<p>Morris should wish he were a Schmoo.</p>

<p>What, oh what, can we say about the latest inane quote from yet another Hollywood mogul about Apple&#8217;s Steve Jobs and his hugely popular iTunes and iPod products.</p>
<p>The latest piece of hoo-ha comes from former Disney CEO Michael Eisner (pictured below), pointing a finger at Apple as the real villain in the ongoing <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071107/striking-out-on-creating-an-internet-hit/">strike between the Writers Guild of America and Hollywood entertainment behemoths</a</p>

<p>Of course, it has been those greedy studio execs who have been shafting creators of content for decades now, by giving them a minuscule cut of revenues from DVDs and video cassettes.</p>
<p>Now that they are trying to do the same with income they will be getting as content moves to digital media, including the Web, cell phones and other new devices, Eisner comes out with an appalling analysis in an interview yesterday at the Media and Money conference.</p>
<p>Said Eisner:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;[Movie and television studios] make deals with Steve Jobs, who takes them to the cleaners. They make all these kinds of things, and who&#8217;s making money? Apple! They should get a piece of Apple. If I was a union, I&#8217;d be striking up wherever he is.&#8221; </p></blockquote>
<p>Oh my goodness, considering how many businesses hang off the entertainment industry. Should the writers get revenues from the sales of television sets? Popcorn sold at the movies? From TV Guide? Of course not.</p>
<p>This comes after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071030/nbcus-jeff-zucker-turns-lemonade-into-lemons/">NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker noted in another interview</a> recently that Apple owed him some money too for its success with the iPod.</p>
<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want to replace the dollars we were making in the analog world with pennies on the digital side,&#8221; said Zucker, who suggested entertainment companies should get a piece of the action. &#8220;Apple sold millions of dollars worth of hardware off the back of our content and made a lot of money.&#8221;</p>
<p>As I noted then: &#8220;That&#8217;s sort of like Britney Spears asking the tabloids to hand over a big bag of Benjamins for making such bank covering her riveting high jinks and crotch emergencies. Frankly, she has a better argument than Zucker.&#8221;</p>
<p>Eisner is even worse, making the score thus far: Britney 2, Hollywood 0.</p>
