			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nintendo&#8217;s 3DS got off to a rocky start when it launched in March of this year, so much so that it ultimately resulted in a price slash.</p>
<p>But the 3-D handheld gaming device has gotten a boost from recent game releases, and the gaming giant hopes two more items will keep the hardware&#8217;s momentum going for the holiday season.  </p>

<p>This Sunday, Nintendo will release Mario Kart 7 for 3DS. It&#8217;s the second game in the Mario franchise aimed at the portable device in the past two weeks. Retailing for $39.99, Mario Kart 7 includes new courses and kart abilities and supports the 3DS StreetPass feature, which allows users to wirelessly connect to other &#8220;Mii&#8221; characters as they pass each other on the street or are in the vicinity of each other.</p>
<p>The company also plans to release a pink version of the 3DS, bundled with one of its Nintendogs + Cats games. The pink 3DS will cost $169.99 in the U.S., the same price as the standard Nintendo 3DS system. Nintendo had previously said a pink version was aimed at girls (<em>sigh</em>, but they do like lots of other colors, too). </p>
<p>The Nintendo 3DS, the company&#8217;s first 3-D portable gaming handset, hit the U.S. in March, at a price of $249.99. The device has an autostereoscopic screen &#8212; which means glasses aren&#8217;t required to see the 3-D imagery &#8212; and a depth slider that adjusts the intensity of the 3-D.</p>
<p>Consumers were less than thrilled by the 3DS, with many citing vision problems and high game prices, forcing Nintendo to later reduce the price. The move resulted in a 260 percent sales jump, with Nintendo selling 235,000 units in August, ranking it the second-best-selling piece of gaming hardware in the U.S. that month.  </p>
<p>The 3DS got another boost when Nintendo&#8217;s Super Mario 3D Land game became available Thanksgiving week, as part of a bundle with a red 3DS. Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime said the game was the fastest-selling portable Mario game in Nintendo&#8217;s history, and that interest in the game drove hardware sales up 49 percent.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe more and more that software drives hardware,&#8221; Fils-Aime said. </p>
<p>Fils-Aime said Nintendo continues to invest in 3-D technology in terms of content, but for now, consumers shouldn&#8217;t hold their breath for a next-generation 3DS. </p>
<p>&#8220;I wouldn’t expect a complete redesign of the hardware in the near-term,&#8221; he said. </p>
<p>In addition to the new pink model, Nintendo 3DS is available in the U.S. in blue, black and red. A white version of the device is sold in Japan, although Fils-Aime noted that Nintendo&#8217;s white handheld DS and DSi devices haven&#8217;t sold as well in the U.S. as other colors have.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The first videogame that promises 3-D without the goofy glasses is about to hit stores, but in my tests, it made me a little dizzy.</p>
<p>On March 27, Nintendo is introducing the <a href="http://Nintendo.com/3ds">3DS</a>. This apparent breakthrough turned negative for some when Nintendo added a warning to the device that said viewing 3-D images by children age 6 and under may cause vision damage.</p>

<p>Unaffected by age restrictions, I&#8217;ve been using the 3DS for the past week, and it&#8217;s a lot of fun—though its chunky design looks like the company is taking a step back rather than forward. Its 3-D screen works as advertised without 3-D glasses, though its effects can&#8217;t be seen from side angles, so friends trying to peek at the screen won&#8217;t see much. It made me a bit dizzy after a while, so I adjusted a 3-D Depth Slider to make the screen images appear less three-dimensional. This slider, or a setting in parental controls, can turn off the 3-D.</p>
<p>The videogame industry has a lot riding on Nintendo&#8217;s launch. Sales of new videogame consoles in 2010 fell 13% to $6.29 billion from $7.19 billion a year earlier, according to market-research firm NPD Group. Sales have begun edging up in the past few months following the launch in November of Microsoft Corp.&#8217;s Kinect motion-controller for its Xbox 360 console. </p>
<p>The industry is facing competition from sleeker, lighter smartphones which offer good quality, downloadable games free or for a few dollars, much less than the average $40 price for each Nintendo 3DS game. While Nintendo has created products with 3-D capabilities since the mid-1980s, none have caught on. Nintendo 3DS is the result of improvements in screen technology and lower prices for these screens. The company, which is based in Kyoto, Japan, saw no apparent damage to its headquarters after the recent earthquake, a spokesman says. Business operations, including future product shipments, haven&#8217;t been affected, he adds.</p>
<p>Nintendo&#8217;s competitors aren&#8217;t jumping on the portable 3-D bandwagon quite yet. Apple has no intention of introducing a 3-D, portable display anytime soon, say people familiar with the situation. When Sony announced plans for its Next Generation Portable gaming device in January, the company confirmed this device wouldn&#8217;t have 3-D. A spokesman says Sony considered including 3-D during the development process for this device, but decided to focus on other features. A Microsoft spokesman says as consumer demand evolves for 3-D, the company is committed to evolving its technology. Both Sony and Microsoft offer 3-D games and movies in the living room via their PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.</p>
<p>On March 27, 18 game titles will launch including Nintendogs + cats from Nintendo, and Madden NFL Football and Sims 3 from EA Sports. Almost all Nintendo DS games and DSiWare games will be playable in 2-D on the Nintendo 3DS. </p>
<p>Games that come loaded on the 3DS include Face Raiders and Nintendo 3DS Sound, which plays MP3 or AAC files and mixes your voice using funny sound effects. A Mii Maker program lets people make a Mii (personalized game character) with photos they take with the device. I created a particularly funny looking Mii with features that mirrored some of mine. But these Miis can&#8217;t be exported back to the Wii gaming console, where Miis first became popular.</p>

<p>Another cool game called AR Games lets users look through the 3DS cameras at six augmented-reality cards that come with the device. The cards make images more animated and three-dimensional. I found the effect so realistic, I reached out with my hand to make sure the imposed images, like a card with mini bull&#8217;s-eyes, weren&#8217;t actually on the table in front of me. </p>
<p>The 3DS has a few new features besides 3-D. A new circle pad works like a super flexible joystick for smoother navigation. Two outward-facing, stereo cameras take 3-D photos of friends or things, which can then be used in games. This made the games more personal and fun. </p>
<p>I used the 3-D photos I took in games like Face Raiders, which  makes use of its motion and gyro sensors. The 3DS has an Internet browser, which wasn&#8217;t available on the device I tested. A Nintendo spokesman says it won&#8217;t work on devices until May. Also in May, Nintendo will start offering downloadable games for the 3DS.</p>
<p>Programs called SpotPass and StreetPass allow the 3DS to wirelessly receive or send data on the go even when the device is in sleep mode. SpotPass detects wireless hot spots so the 3DS can download free software, videos or game data. In late May, SpotPass will let users access AT&amp;T&#8217;s Wi-Fi hot spots, free of charge. StreetPass lets one 3DS wirelessly exchange data with others within range (roughly 100 feet). A light on the 3DS indicates when the device has received new notifications. </p>
<p>The 3DS can perform other functions in sleep mode, like counting steps for a built-in pedometer. I carried the 3DS in my bag on several occasions throughout a conference and noticed a tiny icon of feet at the top of the screen with a number of steps beside it. </p>
<p>But the addition of 3-D technology to this device meant compromises on some key features. At eight ounces and 0.8-inch thick, the 3DS is slightly heavier and thicker than its comparable predecessor, the Nintendo DSi, which came out in 2009. (Apple&#8217;s iPod touch weighs less than half as much and is 0.28-inch thick.) </p>
<p>The 3DS&#8217;s estimated battery life is up to five hours while playing 3DS games, while regular Nintendo DS games will last up to eight hours. The DSi&#8217;s estimated battery life is up to 14 hours of game play. The 3DS is $100 more expensive than the DSi and its games are also pricier.</p>
<p>The Nintendo 3DS does a good job of incorporating 3-D with photos and games, as long as the games don&#8217;t make you feel dizzy. But its clunky form and limited functionality is up against steep competition from smartphones that cost less and offer more games.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This holiday season, instead of gathering around the piano for traditional sing-alongs, some families will gather around their television sets and game consoles to make music &#8212; by playing games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band.</p>
<p>Now, there&#8217;s a new option for these digital performers: Wii Music from Nintendo. This $50 game was designed for Nintendo&#8217;s hugely popular $250 Wii gaming system, of which there were more than two million sold in November alone, according to the company.</p>
<p>Wii uses motion-sensitive controllers to move characters in games. A game of tennis in Wii Sports, for example, works when you swing the Wii remote like you would a tennis racket. The Wii&#8217;s simple graphics and adorable Miis (on-screen cartoons designed to look like you) appeal to the non-gaming set, inciting parents to challenge their kids to games of Wii Golf and spurring senior centers to start Wii Bowling leagues.</p>

<p>Nintendo carries this cutesy, user-friendly style of video gaming over to Wii Music, where the remote works as a musical instrument, cheerful songs abound and a white-wigged character named Sebastian Tute gives instructions. Along with Sebastian, the Tutes &#8212; a musically gifted group of Miis that would give the Von Trapps a run for their money &#8212; appear and demonstrate how to play various types of music and instruments.</p>
<p>Though it&#8217;s comparably priced, Wii Music differs from games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band in many ways, and there are understandable reasons why a frequent user of those games would shun Sebastian and the Tutes. For starters, teenage fans of Guitar Hero and Rock Band who like the games&#8217; variety of popular songs may gripe about Wii Music&#8217;s selection, which includes the likes of &#8220;My Grandfather&#8217;s Clock&#8221; and Beethoven&#8217;s &#8220;Ode to Joy&#8221;; none of Wii Music&#8217;s songs are more recent than the late 1980s.</p>
<p>Perhaps the biggest difference is that, in Wii Music, you aren&#8217;t using a few fake instruments like a guitar or drum set. You are instead manipulating the Wii controller to simulate one of many instruments depicted on screen. There&#8217;s even one &#8220;instrument&#8221; called Dog Suit &#8212; a dog suit that, when worn by a Mii, uses canine barks in place of notes. Another key difference is that, aside from one game, Wii never penalizes you for playing an incorrect note in a song, because you can&#8217;t play a bad note &#8212; every press of an imaginary key or strum of an invisible string plays the correct note.</p>

<p>This &#8220;no mistakes&#8221; environment is a little bit like a sports league in which every kid gets a trophy. Wii Music got a bit too saccharine at times, like when I scored a lousy 43 out of 100 points in a game and Sebastian Tute assured me that points didn&#8217;t much matter so long as I played the way I wanted to play. But for people who are learning about music and don&#8217;t want to worry so much about playing the right note, OK: Wii Music fosters a freedom to experiment with style by allowing users to improvise and explore variations of songs.</p>
<p>Outside of the Games section, you are the judge of your own performance, rating it however you see fit, or not at all. Wii Music is divided into Jam, Lessons, Videos and Games. My favorite section was Games, which included conducting a song in Mii Maestro, hitting the right note at just the right moment in Handbell Harmony and arranging Miis from lowest to highest note in Pitch Perfect.</p>
<p>The more activities I completed, the more instruments and songs were unlocked and available for me to use; off the shelf, each copy of Wii Music starts out with 27 instruments, but over 60 can be unlocked in the game. In Lessons, Sebastian Tute explained the importance of each instrument in a song and the role that it played. Before I played drums in a reggae song, he explained that reggae drums lay down an eight-beat rhythm. In the Japanese style of music, I learned how to play and recorded myself playing all four parts of a song: taiko drum, bells, shamisen, a three-string guitar-like instrument that puts bass in the song, and flute.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;d like, you can opt to save your performances as music videos when you&#8217;re finished. These include your mistakes &#8212; err, improvisations &#8212; and some other funny effects like views of the audience members as they bob their heads listening to you play &#8220;Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.&#8221; Album covers can be made for these videos, and the finished product can be sent to other friends&#8217; Wiis if they also have Wii Music. Those friends can play over parts of your song and send the revised video back to you. While you&#8217;re playing songs, small black notes with faces on them called Be-Bops appear in the bottom right of the screen and work as a metronome would, steadily keeping the beat.</p>
<p>But cool accessories like guitars and microphones that are used to play music with other games aren&#8217;t available for Wii Music; instead, you must use your trusty Wii remote and Nunchuk to make one of four motions: piano-type, guitar-type, trumpet-type or violin-type. These four motions work to play a variety of instruments in different music styles, but some are easier to pretend to use than others.</p>
<p>While playing the imaginary trumpet I held the remote like one, pressing its 1 and 2 buttons like trumpet keys. But playing the piano uses the same motion as that which is used for playing drums &#8212; a downward hitting motion with the remote and Nunchuk &#8212; and this felt more like using a hammer than playing a piano. If you own a $90 Wii Balance Board, you can use it in drum mode in addition to the remote and Nunchuk. I tried this briefly, and it was fun to use the balance board in place of drum pedals.</p>
<p>Wii Music isn&#8217;t meant to replace a music lesson, but it&#8217;s intended to get people thinking about music and their own music style, without fear of making mistakes. It&#8217;s fun, unintimidating and will even teach you a thing or two. Just steer clear of the Dog Suit, if you can help it.</p>
