The Web video distributor needs a replacement for Mike Hudack, who may return. Co-founder Dina Kaplan, who will be leaving soon, will not.

Web video distributor Blip.tv is operating without one of its co-founders, and another one is leaving the company.

Mike Hudack, the CEO of the six-year-old company, went on medical leave more than a month ago, and the company’s board and managers are interviewing candidates for a permanent replacement.

In an unrelated move, Hudack’s co-founder Dina Kaplan is preparing to leave. She has most recently been handling PR and marketing for the company. Both Kaplan and Blip’s management are describing her departure, announced to the company’s staff this week, as a mutual decision.

Cable industry veteran Steve Brookstein who joined the company in January as chief operating officer, is running day to day operations, but I’m told he isn’t angling for the CEO spot.

Blip has primarily focused on helping smallish Web producers distribute and generate ad revenue for their shows via YouTube and other sites. Earlier this year it also launched a new portal strategy where it started promoting the shows on its own site; at the time it said was generating 300 million video views per month.

Kaplan sent me this statement via email: “Blip.tv has an incredible future ahead of it. It has been 6.5 years, and the company is now in a position where I can begin throwing my heart into a project I’ve been incubating and am ready to devote more resources and time towards taking public. There’s no exact date when I’ll be leaving the company, but the company in great shape, and I look forward to speaking more about what’s ahead in the next few months.”

Blip sales head Evan Gotlib says Hudack remains on the company’s board, and that it expects him to return to his start-up eventually. “When Mike gets healthy, he’s going to be back at this company in some way,” Gotlib says.

Here’s a video interview I shot with Hudack in May 2010, when he was announcing a $10 million funding round led by Canaan Partners and Bain Capital. Blip has raised around $18 million overall.

It's no YouTube, but Blip.TV is turning five, too. That's impressive enough for any Web video outfit, but CEO Mike Hudack also has a good story to tell: He's figuring out how to make money from the clips small-time producers make--and how to get the producers enough money to make more clips. Repeat.

YouTube isn’t the only Web video company celebrating its fifth anniversary. Blip.TV doesn’t have a celebratory channel, but it is marking the occasion in style: The New York-based company has raised $10 million in a C round led by Canaan Partners and Bain Capital.

Blip doesn’t make Web video–almost none of the Web video companies that survived the last bubble do that. Instead, Blip helps distribute clips, generally made by small-time producers, and sells ads against them. It splits the proceeds with the producers.

And like many other Web video outfits, Blip still isn’t profitable, though I’m told that could change by the end of the year. But Blip has a modest burn rate and has been steadily ramping up its list of big brand advertisers. Which is why it has been able to get away with raising only $8 million prior to its newest round.

Here’s an interview I shot with CEO Mike Hudack yesterday, in which he explains how a Web video company can survive without the backing of Google (GOOG) or big media companies. And he sketches out his vision for Web video’s future: Lots of people spending very little to make interesting stuff, and making enough money to keep on doing it.

Following that, a clip of Nostalgia Critic, one of Blip’s most successful shows. I don’t get it, but plenty of people do.

BLIP.TV RAISES $10.1 MILLION IN FUNDING

Online Media Company Secures Capital from Canaan Partners and Bain Capital Ventures.

NEW YORK, NY – May 19, 2010 — Next generation television network blip.tv today announced the closing of its third round of institutional capital, led by Canaan Partners and existing investors Bain Capital Ventures. The company will use its new funding to accelerate the growth of the independent Web shows that blip.tv hosts and distributes, expand its content services team, continue to grow its international advertising sales force and develop new products for viewers and producers.

“Blip.tv turns five this year, and I couldn’t be happier with our success to date and our growth plans for the future,” said blip.tv CEO and co-founder Mike Hudack. “We started in 2005 with a simple mission: to change the entertainment industry by making independent show production sustainable and scalable. We’re moving on to the next phase of executing against that mission, and with help from both Canaan Partners and Bain Capital Ventures I’m confident that we’ll be successful. We’re making more shows sustainable every single day, and now we’re going to accelerate that change even faster. This is an extremely exciting time.”

More than 44,000 independent show producers visit the blip.tv show creator dashboard every day to review statistics, engage with their communities of viewers, manage their shows, and release new episodes across blip.tv’s extensive distribution network. Together these shows attract more than 90 million video views a month. Eighty-five percent of those views are paired with targeted, direct-sold advertising from brands such as PepsiCo, Chevrolet, Samsung, Starbucks, AT&T and Scion.

“We’ve been following blip.tv’s growth for years, and we’re excited to invest in the company as it continues to change the entertainment industry,” said Warren Lee, Venture Partner at Canaan Partners. “Blip.tv has executed on its vision, and the company is creating a new Web television industry that is drawing top talent from traditional television networks, the film industry and garages across America. We look forward to working with Mike and his team to continue transforming entertainment together.”

Think of how much time you spend on the Web when you're gainfully employed. How much would that increase if you weren't? Something to think about as you ponder data from a variety of sites reporting increased traffic in January--the same month that 600,000 Americans lost their jobs.

File under “not quite sure what to make of this”: Americans lost 600,000 jobs last month. And a wide variety of Web site operators tell me they’ve seen eye-popping traffic numbers last month. Anyone want to connect the dots?

First, some data points:

Gawker Media’s Nick Denton reports a big traffic spike at his sites in January–298 million page views, a 30 percent year-over-year increase. That’s even though one of his biggest annual eyeball attractors–Steve Jobs at MacWorld–never materialized.

Blip.tv CEO Mike Hudack tells me that uploads to his Web video network have increased 50 percent so far this year.

Now News Corp.’s (NWS) MySpace, citing comScore numbers, notes that its U.S. traffic shot up last month as well: Unique visitors were up 10 percent, which is worth noting for a (relatively) old social network, and those folks spent 30 percent more time on the site than they did a year ago. (News Corp. is the owner of Dow Jones, which owns this Web site.)

Obligatory Twitter traffic stat: 2.6 million uniques in January, up 1,362 percent over the last year.

ComScore’s (SCOR) overall numbers for Web usage for the last month: Uniques up 4.1 percent, page views up 3.1 percent, time spent per visitor up 2.5 percent.

Is any of this meaningful? Hard to say: Any single site can argue that it has done something to generate more visits and engagement from its users: MySpace has its MySpace Music site, Twitter is the buzziest start-up of the last 12 months, etc.

And last month also happened to feature Barack Obama’s inauguration, which was a huge Web traffic driver.

Still… there aren’t that many more Americans who are getting online for the first time at this point. Isn’t it reasonable to assume that a wide variety of sites is posting big traffic gains because many of us are now unemployed or underemployed? And that we’ve got more a lot of downtime to surf and click?

Alas, all those eyeballs aren’t translating to dollars for many of these publishers: Just ask Time Warner’s (TWX) AOL, which saw page views increase 69 percent during the last three months of 2008, but saw ad revenue drop 18 percent.

But I digress. If for some reason you do find yourself with more time on your hands, might I suggest this trio of themed YouTube videos? Enjoy. And good luck.

Yep, Mike Hudack was in the video that's supposed to symbolize the excess--and end--of the Web 2.0 era. And no, he doesn't care what you think about it. He's got bigger things on his mind. Like convincing more advertisers to take Web video seriously and making a business out of it.

Let’s get this out of the way: Yes, Blip.tv CEO Mike Hudack was one of the 20 20-somethings who appeared in “the video”–the now sort-of-infamous lip synch clip made by a bunch of vacationing Web kids.

And no, Hudack doesn’t feel bad about it or the brief blogstorm the clip created.

In any event, Hudack has real-world worries, like how to keep his video distribution site afloat.

The thesis behind Blip.tv, and every other video site, is simple: Lots of people are spending lots of time watching Web video and advertising will eventually follow.

But there are lots and lots of video sites out there (there will be fewer, soon), and advertisers have yet to really embrace Web video. Those who do buy Web video ads generally view them as experiments.

And experiments are hard to justify during a recession.

The good news, Hudack says, is that Web video only gets cheaper to produce and distribute–he says bandwidth costs have come down 40 percent in the last year. He’s now paying about a penny every time someone views one of his videos.

And the number of views keeps increasing: In September, Blip.tv said it had served up 51 million video views, up 250 percent year-over-year, and Mike says that number bumped up to 55 million in October.

And since Blip.tv only distributes clips made by pros and semi-pros, he can attach ads to most of those views, unlike YouTube, the Google (GOOG) video unit which can only monetize a small fraction of its inventory.

And the really good news is that Hudack has a new slug of cash to keep him afloat and allow him to expand. He won’t disclose the size of his newest round, led by Bain Capital Ventures, but I’m told it’s in the $3 million to $5 million range.

(Irony alert: Hudack doesn’t mind showing up on a widely distributed vacation video, but he won’t go into his company’s financials).

[This is normally the point in the post where I'd play you a clip of a video interview I've conducted with Hudack. But since the Amazon (AMZN) "Next Day Shipping" feature apparently just means "give us an extra $19 and we'll get it to you when we feel like it," MediaMemo is still camera-less.]

Instead, take a look at this episode of “Political Lunch,” a Blip.tv-distributed show and note the way that sponsor HBO has been integrated into the clip.

The hosts give the Time Warner (TWX) pay-cable channel a shout-out at the beginning. Then, there’s a brief overlay ad early in the piece, followed by a preview of an HBO show at the end of the clip.

It’s a good example of what Web video can offer an advertiser–a chance to get right in front of viewers, when they’re already engaged in the screen, without being too obtrusive.

Now the trick for Blip.tv, and everyone else in Web video, is convincing a lot more advertisers that this is worth their while.

All in good fun, right?

I am sure this will be the dumb-as-a-box-of-hammers reasoning this group of Web 2.0 folks gives for this odd video effort, doing a lip-synch romp on their group vacation in Cyprus to Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'," and then posting it for all to see on Vimeo.

It is titled: "Twenty world Internet citizens met in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in October of 2008 for a week of reflections on life, love, and the Internet."

Um, kids, here's a reflection: While you swim in that pricey infinity pool in your luxury villa, Silicon Valley is tanking all over the place. You might want to check your email and see if Sequoia Capital or Ron Conway has cost-cutted you out of a job!

I am sure this will be the dumb-as-a-box-of-hammers reasoning this group of Web 2.0 folks gives for this odd video effort, doing a lip-synch romp on their group vacation in Cyprus to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” and then posting it for all to see on Vimeo.

It is titled: “20 world Internet citizens met in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in October of 2008 for a week of reflections on life, love, and the Internet.”

Um, kids, here’s a reflection: While you swim in that pricey infinity pool in your luxury villa, Silicon Valley is tanking all over the place. You might want to check your email and see if Sequoia Capital or Ron Conway has cost-cutted you out of a job!

Oh, sorry, BoomTown’s karma is so negative, isn’t I?

But the video gave me flashbacks to heedless-partying-until-the-bomb-fell attitude before the popping of the Web 1.0 bubble. It obviously still burns.

The group rollicking includes Blip.tv’s Mike Hudack, Facebook’s Dave Morin, Drop.io’s Sam Lessin and–well, um, eek, bad idea, awkward!–tech reporter Jessica Vascellaro of The Wall Street Journal.

Here is the video:

UPDATE: Apparently, the makers of the video have made it private on Vimeo and blocked it on YouTube, likely due to the reaction to it, but you can see it here.
