			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It turns out that the Royal Wedding wasn&#8217;t just <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110429/i-do-want-some-ice-cream-really/">big for social media sites like Facebook and Twitter</a>. It also led to a huge surge of text messages.</p>
<p>The blessed union led to text messaging volume that was more than six times normal in the United States and the United Kingdom at the start of the wedding. Though it dipped a bit as things went on (and on and on), the messaging rate stayed at more than double normal rates throughout. In all, that made Friday a bigger texting day than Easter or Valentine&#8217;s Day. </p>
<p>In fact, Friday was the second biggest text messaging day of the year, behind only New Year&#8217;s. Even stateside, where it was the middle of the night, traffic was up 31 percent, according to SAP&#8217;s Sybase unit, which compiled all this vital messaging data.</p>
<p>For the record, there is only one message I want to send when there is something going on at two in the morning: &#8220;Do not disturb.&#8221;</p>

According to the report, China is the biggest spot for the mobile Internet, with 73 percent of Chinese youths age 15 to 24 citing mobile Internet usage as among the things they used their cell phones for in the past month. By comparison, less than half of American and British cell-phone toting youths used the Internet from their mobile devices, while the rest of Europe had rates less than 25 percent.</p>
<p>Mobile messaging is also big, though in most parts of the world young women are far more likely than young men to send text and picture messages. There were some exceptions, such as India, where men were twice as likely as women to send texts and four times more likely to send pictures.</p>
<p>The Nielsen research was conducted in 19 countries, though the report broke out  results only for the U.S., UK, India, Italy, Brazil, China, Spain, Russia and Germany. In most countries Nielsen surveyed 5,000 young people, though in the U.S. it surveyed 75,000 youths. In some countries the research was done face-to-face and in others the survey was done online.</p>
<p>In most countries across the globe, young men are more likely than women to have smartphones, though the U.S. is an exception with young women making up 55 percent of smartphone owners between 15 and 24. The adoption of smartphones versus feature phones also varies widely. In India, for example, feature phones outnumber smartphones 9 to 1 among young people, while in Italy smartphone adoption is nearing 50 percent among the younger set.<br />

Advanced data usage was highest in the U.S and China, where about 17 in 20 young people did more than just make calls and send text and picture messages. That type of data use was least common in India, where only 13 percent did so, However, another 51 percent of Indian youths used their phones for text and/or picture messages.</p>
<p>The Nielsen study also looked at other patterns including use of more than one SIM card and whether phones are prepaid or postpaid, although those trends seemed to have more to do with how the country&#8217;s cell phone industry is set up as opposed to indicative of trends among youth.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Finally, after years of churning out corporate-centric smartphones, Microsoft has designed a homegrown, cool and truly consumer-focused mobile device. It&#8217;s called the Kin (kin.com), and it comes in two versions, Kin One and Kin Two. Both will be available exclusively from Verizon Wireless (VZ) and in stores on May 13 for $50 and $100, respectively, after a $100 mail-in rebate and two-year contract. </p>

<p>For the past five days, I&#8217;ve kept the Kin One with me at all times, using it for social networking, texting, emailing, phone calls, Web browsing and capturing photos and videos. This 3.9-ounce gadget is about the size of a large makeup compact. It has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a 2.6-inch square touch screen that responds to gestures like swiping, pinching, double tapping, dragging and dropping. Friends who handled it each had the same first impression—that it felt sturdy in the hand. (The Kin Two, which I used but didn&#8217;t test as extensively as the Kin One, looks more like the iPhone, but with a cleverly hidden, slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It offers 8 gigabytes of storage, a 3.4-inch touch screen and the same new software features as the Kin One.)</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Pop-Up Clouds</h5>
<p>The Kin One has several fun features. It makes all sorts of funky sounds when different buttons are pressed, and it displays content in clever ways, like text messages that pop onto the screen in dialogue bubbles. The home screen, called the Kin Loop, is a colorful collage of photos and status updates from social networks including Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. A finger swipe to the left from the Loop home screen shows the device&#8217;s apps, while a swipe to the right displays a photo collage of favorite contacts. A round dot at the bottom of each screen, called the Kin Spot, gives people a place where they can drag and drop almost anything to save for sending later. </p>
<p>The real wow factor of the Kin starts when you get back to your computer. By logging into kin.com with the same username and password used to set up the Kin, you&#8217;ll reach Kin Studio, an online repository for activities performed with the device, laid out in timeline style. This includes photos and videos, which are automatically synced to the Studio about five minutes after they&#8217;ve been captured—with no extra steps on the user&#8217;s part. It shows phone calls, text messages, and contacts. All of this content is viewable by month, week, or day. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Magic Moment</h5>
<p>The first time I opened Kin Studio felt like magic. An entire website was created to hold my Kin&#8217;s content, yet I had done absolutely nothing extra to put it there. I&#8217;m the kind of person who never plugs her mobile device in for syncing, so this over-the-air backup is ideal for me. I saw photos that I didn&#8217;t remember taking and enjoyed watching videos captured with the Kin on a larger computer screen.</p>
<p>The Studio is a huge plus for the Kin in two respects. For one thing, if someone loses a Kin, its content is still saved on this site. More importantly, because all photos and videos are automatically stored online, the uploading from the device has already been done. When photos or videos are shared from Kin, the phone triggers the Web-based Studio site to do the sending—a great use of &#8220;cloud computing.&#8221; This takes pressure off the already overloaded cellular network and lets people quickly send several photos or videos at once. This also helps to conserve the device&#8217;s four gigabytes of storage, since only a thumbnail of a file resides on the device.</p>

Microsoft&#8217;s $50 Kin One</div>
<p>But for a device that focuses on social networking, the Kin falls short in some respects. Twitter fans will be disappointed that it can&#8217;t retweet updates or direct message other Twitter users from within a tweet; instead, they must use a clumsy, manual process. Likewise, photos dragged into the Spot for sharing can&#8217;t be shared through Twitter. Kin owners using Facebook won&#8217;t know if friends have made comments about one of their status updates without going through three steps to read a screen displaying comments. </p>
<p>Also, this device&#8217;s 5-megapixel camera with a flash is supposed to do a good job of capturing photos and/or videos, in dark areas (like bars or clubs), but it produced fuzzy, hazy shots in normal and low light. It was significantly inferior to my BlackBerry&#8217;s 3.2-megapixel camera with a flash. The videos captured on the Kin looked better.</p>
<p>This is only the first version of Kin software and a Microsoft (MSFT) representative says that the company plans regular, over-the-air updates. These include two significant updates before the end of this year, in addition to a maintenance update that a company representative says will improve photo quality.</p>
<p>Apps on the Kin are currently limited to those bundled on the device—like Facebook, music and photos—and it won&#8217;t have third-party apps this year. Farther down the road, the Kin platform will merge with Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Phones and all the devices will have access to a common app marketplace.</p>

<h5 class="subhed">Two-Day Battery Life</h5>
<p>The Kin&#8217;s battery life estimate is two full days with normal use, making life easier for the type of person who forgets the device&#8217;s charger for a weekend trip. In my tests, it lasted from a Saturday morning until a Monday night without needing a charge, and though I only made a few short calls on it, this was still pretty impressive.</p>
<p>I had some trouble getting used to the Kin&#8217;s keyboard software. Typing wasn&#8217;t a problem, but its lack of autocorrect capabilities was. None of the first letters in my sentences were capitalized, and shortcuts like hitting the spacebar twice to type a period don&#8217;t exist. Nor are words corrected as you go: typing &#8220;youre&#8221; won&#8217;t automatically become &#8220;you&#8217;re&#8221;; &#8220;i&#8221; won&#8217;t become &#8220;I&#8221;; and so on. A Microsoft representative says this is intentional because so much slang gets autocorrected the wrong way, but it only made more work for me, which was annoying.</p>
<p>I carried my little Kin in a pocket or purse with no problem, and enjoyed reading the continuous stream of social-networking updates on the Loop. I selected nine friends as my Favorites, which automatically used their Facebook profile photos to create a small representative tile for each person on one screen. A two-finger touch on the Kin&#8217;s screen lets you rearrange tiles according to your preference. A small, silver button below the touch screen works as the back button.</p>
<p>I enjoyed grabbing content—like someone&#8217;s Facebook status, a photo or a website opened in the browser—and dragging it into the Spot. I did this by holding my finger on the item until a tiny icon representing it seemed to bubble up from the screen, and then I dragged it to the Spot dot at the bottom of the screen. </p>
<p>Goofy sound effects indicate when the item has been dumped into the Spot. By tapping the Spot, options for sharing appear, and thanks to the Studio, several items can be dumped into the Spot and then shared at once with no problem. The Spot works to share photos to Facebook, MySpace or Windows Live, and it can share videos to Facebook and MySpace. Using SMS, MMS, or email, the Spot can send photos, videos, websites, Web-search results, location, feeds, status messages, and tweets. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Searching the Web</h5>
<p>I liked using the Kin&#8217;s browser. Its URL bar doubles as a search box and uses Bing, Microsoft&#8217;s search engine. Double tapping on the browser screen automatically zooms in on a Web page, and pinching two fingers on the touch screen zooms in even more. </p>
<p>Up to 10 email accounts can sync with the Kin, including POP or IMAP accounts and one Microsoft Exchange email account. For now, contacts will only sync for Hotmail and Exchange users.</p>
<p>Music can be pulled onto the Kin by syncing the device with Microsoft&#8217;s Zune software or by using the Mac Sync program to sync iTunes playlists—as well as iPhoto libraries—to the Kin. A Zune Pass, which costs $15 for one a month or $45 for three months, enables over-the-air streaming and downloading of tracks and is offered as a 14-day free trial for Kin buyers. </p>
<p>Though Microsoft&#8217;s Kin One has some polishing to do on its camera and on its social-networking tools, it&#8217;s a uniquely attractive device that&#8217;s a pleasure to use. I only wish all mobile devices had worry-free backup websites like the Kin Studio. </p>

<p>AT&#038;T executives were no doubt grinning into their cornflakes this morning over a cock-up at rival Verizon that left many of that company’s customers in the eastern half of the U.S. without access to data services early Wednesday. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/03/verizon-suffering-nationwide-data-outage/">The network outage</a>, which was evidently caused by some bad switch software, affected conventional data services as well as BlackBerry email and MMS. </p>
<p>Service was resolved relatively quickly, by 8:15 am ET, but not before hundreds of customers rushed to Twitter to carp about it and give Verizon (VZ), which has mercilessly antagonized AT&#038;T (T) over its network issues, a little taste of some of the grief its rival has been suffering for the past year.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When it launched on July 10, 2008, Apple’s iTunes App Store held just 552 apps. Today, it boasts more than 100,000 in 21 categories (click on image below) that have been downloaded a total of &#8220;well over&#8221; two billion times. </p>

<p>Astonishing, really, when you think about it. The App Store isn’t even two years old yet. Nor is the iPhone software development kit. Before the SDK was released March 6, 2008, the only developers working with it were the handful of outfits Apple (AAPL) had partnered with while it was in beta. </p>
<p>So Apple is entitled to a bit of gloating. And gloat it did, in a press release celebrating the 100,000-app milestone this morning:</p>

<p>Kara was half James Bond, half Indiana Jones in the cities and jungles of BoomTown this week. She jet-setted, jet-lagged and still managed to report on a genuine cougar fight.</p>
<p>BoomTown waved goodbye to merry old England and racked up some more frequent flier miles early in the week heading back to the techie embrace of Silicon Valley. Before her tray table was locked, though, Kara made a quick stop at <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090922/is-spotify-spot-on-co-founder-daniel-ek-talks-about-the-hot-online-music-start-up/">music darling-of-the-moment Spotify</a>. Daniel Ek, founder and CEO, hopes to bring its pay-per-month music service to millions of American mobile devices, to add to its hefty presence in the U.K. and Europe.</p>
<p>As D-Force One touched down at AllThingsD headquarters, one of the valley’s original major players shook things up with a $100 million branding move. Yahoo (YHOO), possibly now spelled<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090922/yahoo-ad-campaign-creative-wed-like-to-see/"> Y!hoo, changed its brand</a> in support of an overall shakeup of its services. Kara hearkened back to the D conference and wondered if rebranding the company Y!#@&#038;$oo might have been more appropriate, considering CEO Carol Bartz&#8217;s preference for &#8220;salty&#8221; language.</p>
<p>And not to be left out of a worthy chuckle, BoomTown brought readers the inside scoop on the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090923/the-microsoft-cougar-memo-its-grrrrrrrrreat/">cougar that came to town</a>. Yes, a cougar&#8211;or mountain lion, if you’re from California&#8211;was seem roaming the hills above Microsoft’s Redmond, Wash., campus this week. The company circulated a fairly priceless memo that included tips on how to successfully fight a cougar. Any such advice against snow leopards, however, was omitted.</p>
<p>As Kara was jet lagging,  John was running full-tilt over at Digital Daily. On Monday, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090921/repub-neutrality/">the Federal Trade Commission released a new proposal to institutionalize Net neutrality</a>. The proposal would ban Internet service providers and data deliverers from prohibiting or throttling content to promote their own services. John pointed out that it wasn’t too surprising that AT&#038;T (T)&#8211;and Republicans&#8211;weren’t too happy with the move.</p>
<p>While politicians exercised their series of tubes, Microsoft (MSFT) was busy shadow-tablet boxing. John filed a report about the first Microsoft device designed exclusively to compete with a product Apple (AAPL) doesn’t make. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090922/courier/">The &#8220;Courier,&#8221;</a> as the two-page &#8220;tablet-book&#8221; is called, features some decidedly un-Apple-like interfaces, unless of course you look a little farther back to the days of the Newton.</p>
<p>To finish out the week, Digital Daily took the AllThingsD time machine back to 2003, when <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090924/att-welcomes-iphone-users-to-2003/">Apple was rolling out its revolutionary MMS service</a>. Sometime Friday, iPhone users were suddenly able to share pictures with friends over the air. Unless they already use Flickr, Facebook,  or about a zillion other apps that basically do the same thing.</p>
<p>MediaMemo explored its inner, or maybe outer, geek this week, beginning with the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090923/tablet-shmablet-how-about-a-mud-pc/">Gizmodo annual gallery show</a>. The charity event featured musical Tesla coils, Star Trek props and a &#8220;Microsoft Surface&#8221;-like computer with a mud-based (not joking) user interface.</p>
<p>Peter continued the browsing theme, reporting that <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090923/google-yahoo-going-shopping-again/">Yahoo and Google were both back</a> in the market for acquisitions. Google (GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt said he had his checkbook open again, now that &#8220;the worst is behind us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Even if Yahoo and Google are in a buying mood, one particular VC firm isn’t feeling so flush. New York’s Union Square Ventures opted out of the latest round of <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090925/early-twitter-backer-union-square-sits-this-one-out/">Twitter fund-raising</a>. Peter hazarded a guess that the now-famous $1 billion valuation may have had something to do with it.</p>
<p>Across town at the <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090922/microsoft-packsthe-new-zune-hdwith-bells-whistlesand-plenty-of-style/">Mossberg Solution</a>, Katie gave readers a complete rundown on the Microsoft Zune HD. The iPod-hunting media player is now in its fourth generation. The player got high marks in the style and widgets categories, but still needs a solution to the confusing &#8220;points system&#8221; purchase interface. The problem with Zune isn’t the player, it seems, but the stuff Zune isn’t connected to.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s going to be another week of electro-awesomeness here at AllThingsD. Until then, always remember that you should never turn your back on a cougar. The safest way to escape is to buy it a pomegranate martini and squeeze out the window of the men&#8217;s bathroom.</p>

And at some point late tomorrow morning, the carrier will release an update enabling MMS.</p>
<p>&#8220;We know you’ve been eager for this service so we wanted to offer a quick update on the launch plans for MMS on Friday, Sept. 25,&#8221; <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ATT?v=feed&amp;story_fbid=138625780868">AT&#038;T explained on its official Facebook page</a>. &#8220;Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday, the new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready to download through iTunes.&#8221;</p>
<p>Assuming everything goes as planned. And sources inside AT&#038;T (T) tell DSL Reports that the carrier is &#8220;very nervous&#8221; that it might not. &#8220;AT&#038;T and its MMS partners are already seeing &#8216;record traffic during peak hours of the night&#8217; with just the users selected for testing,&#8221; <a href="http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/ATT-Nervous-About-Smooth-iPhone-MMS-Launch-104606">the publication says</a>. &#8220;That early testing has been a little rocky, with AT&#038;T seeing a fairly significant test outage yesterday that has them rushing to beef up their MMSC messaging servers. Estimates among those working on the project are that traffic on AT&#038;T&#8217;s wireless network will be about 40 percent higher all day on Friday as iPhone users fire pictures and video at one another.&#8221;</p>

And at some point late tomorrow morning, the carrier will release an update enabling MMS.</p>
<p>&#8220;We know you’ve been eager for this service so we wanted to offer a quick update on the launch plans for MMS on Friday, Sept. 25,&#8221; <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ATT?v=feed&amp;story_fbid=138625780868">AT&#038;T explained on its official Facebook page</a>. &#8220;Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday, the new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready to download through iTunes.&#8221;</p>
<p>Assuming everything goes as planned. And sources inside AT&#038;T (T) tell DSL Reports that the carrier is &#8220;very nervous&#8221; that it might not. &#8220;AT&#038;T and its MMS partners are already seeing &#8216;record traffic during peak hours of the night&#8217; with just the users selected for testing,&#8221; <a href="http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/ATT-Nervous-About-Smooth-iPhone-MMS-Launch-104606">the publication says</a>. &#8220;That early testing has been a little rocky, with AT&#038;T seeing a fairly significant test outage yesterday that has them rushing to beef up their MMSC messaging servers. Estimates among those working on the project are that traffic on AT&#038;T&#8217;s wireless network will be about 40 percent higher all day on Friday as iPhone users fire pictures and video at one another.&#8221;</p>

<p>The week that took us from August to September was one for the books over at BoomTown, especially if you’re 12.</p>
<p>Kara spent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090831/kara-visits-guitar-hero-hq-for-a-sneak-peek-of-gh5-band-hero-and-dj-hero/">Monday morning</a> at Activision Blizzard (ATVI), where they are pushing forward with the entire Guitar Hero line, even as the game industry faces a nearly 50 percent decline in U.S. sales this year. Kara got to play hero to several of the forthcoming releases, including previewing the much anticipated <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/a-sneak-peek-of-guitar-hero-5-band-hero-dj-hero/EE932085-F34B-414B-A63D-C1195B5DEB28">DJ Hero console</a>.</p>
<p>The youth movement continued with the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090903/fancy-bar-graphs-of-the-week-zero-surprise-the-youngs-love-new-media-more-than-the-olds/">fancy bar graph</a> from Forrester Research’s annual &#8220;State of Consumers and Technology,&#8221; which drove home an important fact of life for media outlets. All the money being spent on new media expansion is a fight for the young; older consumers are sticking to more reliable fare.</p>
<p>BoomTown wasn’t just about the kids though, as 23andMe co-founder <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090904/23andme-co-founder-linda-avey-leaves-start-up-to-focus-on-alzheimers-research/">Linda Avey announced her exit</a> from the gene-juicing business to focus on a foundation related to Alzheimer’s research. Avey co-founded 23andMe with Anne Wojcicki in 2006 with early money from Genentech (DNA), Google (GOOG) and New Enterprise Associates, as well as Wojcicki’s husband, Google co-founder Sergey Brin.</p>
<p>While BoomTown was keepin&#8217; it real with the kids, Digital Daily was abuzz with a spate of iPhone news. John started Monday off on the topic of the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090831/its-official-apple-announces-sept-9-event/">Sept. 9 iPod event</a> with confirmation that music, indeed, will be center stage. In the Apple world, that means iPods and iTunes, though <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/want-to-play-with-the-beatles-but-dont-want-to-pay-for-rock-band-try-jamlegend-soon/">Beatles fans</a> are keeping their fingers crossed.</p>
<p>Readers got a compare-and-contrast of Apple’s (AAPL) foreign and domestic policy when John covered a potential <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090901/apple-in-iphone-talks-with-second-chinese-carrier/">two-carrier system in China</a> and the long-awaited stateside <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090903/att-iphone-mms-on-sept-25/">activation of MMS</a> features in the iPhone OS3. Meaning that while China may get the iPhone carrier flexibility so far absent in the U.S. market, American consumers are just about to get a new feature that’s been standard on every smartphone for a year or more.</p>
<p>MediaMemo covered a fluid week in the world of media giants and Top Chefs. Disney (DIS) went off to the mines and instead of seven dwarfs, found <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/spidey-meet-mickey-disney-buying-marvel-for-4-billion/">Marvel</a> and the rights to its 5,000-character portfolio. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/live-disney-marvel-call/">Disney CEO Bob Iger</a> didn’t think $4 billion was too much to pay to bring Iron Man and friends to the happiest media empire on earth and is sure the company will benefit from such &#8220;rich intellectual property.&#8221;</p>
<p>If the Disney vault got 5,000 new friends this week, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090901/sold-finally-ebay-ditches-65-of-skype-for-19-billion/">eBay said goodbye</a> to one long-time partner. Peter reported that the long, difficult breakup between eBay and Skype was finalized when eBay sold a 65 percent stake in the VOIP juggernaut to the internationally mixed bag of Silver Lake, Index ventures, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090705/new-vc-marc-andreessen-speaks-about-the-dark-side-and-more/">Andreessen Horowitz</a> and a Canadian pension fund.</p>
<p>Peter rounded out the week of motion with lots of changes in Google’s ranks. The search giant shuffled the chairs with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090902/google-still-shuffling-sales-force-self-serve-exec-david-fischer-steps-aside/">David Fischer moving</a> out of the self-serve ad business with no sign yet of a replacement. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090904/google-swaps-out-china-bosses/">Google China</a> saw the big chair turn upside-down when Kai-Fu Lee announced that he’d leave the company this month to begin his own venture. Lee will be replaced by the tag team of Boon-Lock Yeo and John Liu, who will oversee engineering and business, respectively.</p>
<p>Not all Google’s shifts were outbound though. &#8220;Charlie’s Café&#8221; at the main campus got its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090903/googles-top-chef-leaves-las-vegas/">Top Chef </a>back after Preeti Mistry failed to make the cut on the Las Vegas iteration of the popular TV show. Regular fans of the show <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090821/googles-top-chef-tripped-up-by-shellfish/">weren’t surprised by her dismissal</a>, but at least Google can put one in the plus column this week.</p>
<p>Over at The Mossberg Solution, Katie took aim at a possible answer to a question plaguing all image-conscious technophiles: <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090901/bluetooth-headsets-that-up-the-chic-factor/">Yea or nay to the omnipresent Bluetooth earpiece</a>. Plantronics (PLT) and Aliph, maker of the Jawbone, both say yea and are upping the ante on the recently reviled symbol of cellphone userdom. Katie reviewed the fashion-forward <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/mossberg-solutionboehret-tests-two-phone-headsets/8AD52747-E975-4890-8B2D-306A3D2B590A">Discovery 975 and Jawbone Prime</a>, each designed to separate its users from $130. In exchange, they&#8217;ll get redesigned outsides and some new features that might even put one back in Brad Pitt’s ear.</p>

<p>AT&#038;T (T) had repeatedly insisted that MMS capability would be available by the end of summer. By debuting the service on Sept. 25, it’s launching it three days into fall. But, whatever. At least, AT&#038;T is launching it.</p>
<p>MMS will be available at no extra charge to iPhone users who already have a text-messaging subscription from AT&#038;T and own a 3G or 3GS iPhone. It will be enabled by a software update on Sept. 25.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Web browsing and email have comfortably migrated to mobile handhelds like the iPhone, BlackBerry and Palm (PALM) Pre. But many of these gadgets still cost a lot compared with cellphones that come free with renewed two-year contracts. </p>
<p>This week, I tested a new BlackBerry that costs less than any other BlackBerry did at launch—that is, if you buy it at the right place. Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry Curve 8520 costs just $49 at Wal-Mart (WMT)—or $130 if you buy it at T-Mobile. Both prices are with two-year T-Mobile contracts.</p>

<p>The BlackBerry Curve has been one of the company&#8217;s most popular models. All iterations of the Curve combine a full QWERTY keyboard with a sleeker, more stylish look than bigger BlackBerry models like the Bold. And Curves typically cost less than their larger counterparts. In February, RIM refreshed its Curve brand for the first time in over two years with the 8900. This model was a real upgrade for Curve users, thanks to a brighter screen, faster performance and flatter keys that were easier to press. But six months later, it still costs as much as $199 (after rebate)—a steep asking price considering how some older 8300-series Curves are offered for around $50 with two-year contracts.</p>
<p>This newest $49 Curve 8520 lowers that price barrier. Its monthly T-Mobile service plans are also relatively inexpensive, starting at $55 for voice and data (not including MMS or SMS messaging). </p>
<p>It has two features never before seen on a BlackBerry. First, in place of a trackball or scroll wheel, this Curve uses a trackpad—a mini version of those used for mouse navigation on laptops.  </p>
<p>Second, it has designated physical buttons for playing, pausing and skipping ahead or back within media like videos and music. These rubbery buttons are built into the top edge of the BlackBerry.</p>
<p>I like the look of the Curve 8520—especially how the surface covering its screen extends down to the trackpad and its four surrounding buttons, giving it a smooth facade. It comes in two colors, black and frost (I used the black). Its low price, alone, will be enough to draw customers.  </p>
<p>But something about the way its keyboard and navigational keys worked felt cheap. Letter keys felt light and hollow while the Send, Menu, Escape and End keys around the trackpad clicked as I touched them.</p>
<p>The specifications of this BlackBerry tell the tale more specifically. Its 320&#215;240 pixel screen looks faded next to that of the Curve 8900, which is 480&#215;360. The blinking red indicator light at the top front corner of all BlackBerrys is a barely noticeable dot on this device. </p>
<p>And its camera is only two megapixels, not 3.2 megapixels like on the 8900, and is the first on a BlackBerry not to have a built-in flash. Also, it doesn&#8217;t run on the fast 3G network, though it uses Wi-Fi and automatically connects to trusted networks when in range of them. </p>
<p>First-time smartphone owners may not notice or care about these small details, but veteran BlackBerry users will pick up on them right away.</p>
<p>The Curve 8520 incorporates useful physical features found on previous models like right- and left-side convenience keys that work as handy shortcuts. It comes with a 1-gigabyte microSD memory card so users don&#8217;t have to buy their own before loading this device with photos, music and videos. </p>
<p>A strip of rubber runs around the Curve&#8217;s edge, covering up and smoothing over its convenience keys and volume buttons. This rugged addition isn&#8217;t visible from the front of the BlackBerry and it will probably go a long way in preventing nicks and dings. The word &#8220;Curve&#8221; is imprinted on the back of the BlackBerry, proudly branding this model.</p>
<p>The navigational trackpad is a cinch to use and moves the cursor up, down, right and left with very little effort. To select, one needs only to press in on the trackpad just as with the  trackball. Unlike the trackball, which rolls in place and can get stuck once in a great while, the trackpad doesn&#8217;t have any moving parts.</p>
<p>The physical media keys on the Curve 8520&#8242;s top edge work to instantly start playing media from any screen, like a music video that I watched. If you were to use your BlackBerry as your sole portable media player, these would be more valuable. And their position on the top of the Curve makes them easy to reach if the device is in a pocket or purse. </p>
<p>In my everyday usage scenarios, I usually forgot about these shortcut buttons and just used the trackpad to find and select a track or video for playing.  </p>
<p>BlackBerry&#8217;s App World store for applications that users can load onto the device still only offers 2,000 apps, compared to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) 65,000. This means that for now, this new Curve can&#8217;t be enhanced with as many outside programs, which is a real downside.  And if you do download a lot of apps, or music or videos or photos, you may have to get a bigger memory card.</p>
<p>The Curve 8520 isn&#8217;t made for BlackBerry fanatics. But it&#8217;s a good entry-level BlackBerry for users who still haven&#8217;t let go of their basic cellphones. At Wal-Mart&#8217;s $49 price, it&#8217;s hard to beat.  </p>

<p>That’s the gist of an argument put forth this week by Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett, who believes that with the iPhone and App Store, Apple (AAPL) has upended the wireless market in much the same way it upended the music industry with the iPod and iTunes.</p>
<p>&#8220;It wasn’t that long ago that AT&#038;T’s exclusive agreement with Apple’s iconic iPhone looked like a customer relations masterstroke for the carrier,&#8221; Moffett wrote in a note to clients. &#8220;AT&#038;T Mobility, a brand that had once been cingular-ly stodgy and tired, was suddenly, well, relevant again. Apple’s iPhone meant that AT&#038;T was the place for cool handsets. Better, it was the place for wireless data&#8230;.Somewhere along the way, however, Apple has stolen the march, and in the process has recast AT&#038;T from hero to villain.&#8221;</p>
<p>AT&#038;T, says Moffett, was roundly jeered at every mention at <a href="http://allthingsd.com/topics/wwdc-2009/">Apple’s last Worldwide Developer Conference.</a> And, as someone who attended that event, I can attest that this was indeed the case. Certainly the revelation that AT&#038;T (T) wasn’t yet supporting iPhone features like MMS and tethering did not go over well with the WWDC audience, which was already abuzz with criticisms of the carrier’s slow data connections.</p>
<p>With the iPhone, Apple made AT&#038;T Mobility relevant again. It brought the company millions of new subscribers. But in the process, Apple also realigned the strategic playing field in its favor. Radically. Writes Moffett: &#8220;Remarkably, Apple has so thoroughly stolen the customer relationship&#8211;who would argue that Apple iPhone customers’ first affinity is to the device rather than to the network&#8211;that the network is not only irrelevant, it is rather a source of derision.&#8221;</p>
<p>As <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080909/nbcs-itunes-pricing-flexible-just-like-jeff-zuckers-memory/">NBC Universal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker said back in 2007</a>, &#8220;Apple has destroyed the music business and if we don’t take control, they’ll do the same thing on the video side.&#8221;</p>
<p>Or, perhaps, to the wireless business.</p>

(Though there are some <a href="http://twitter.com/waltmossberg/status/2237344975">exceptions</a>!)</p>
<p>And if you are that kind of person, chances are you&#8217;re interested in the new phone&#8217;s &#8220;tethering&#8221; function, the ability to plug it into your laptop and use it as a modem. But you&#8217;re going to have be patient&#8211;and affluent.</p>
<p><strong>If you&#8217;re an AT&amp;T customer, you&#8217;re not going to get the chance to do this in the near future.</strong> The wireless company has announced that it&#8217;s going to offer tethering, but hasn&#8217;t said when. Meanwhile, it has said that it will offer MMS, the ability to send videos and photos from the phone without using email, this summer. So reading between the lines, it&#8217;s reasonable to assume that tethering won&#8217;t be showing up for the next few months at the very least</p>
<p><strong>And if you&#8217;re an AT&amp;T customer, chances are that when you do get the chance to tether, it&#8217;s going to be <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">very</span> expensive.</strong> Like most carriers, AT&amp;T (T) has said it is going to levy an additional charge for tethering, but hasn&#8217;t said how much. Web <a href="http://appmodo.com/914/apple-iphone-mms-coming-in-july-tethering-55/">reports</a> out today suggest that AT&amp;T plans to charge $55 a month. <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">on top of its $30-a-month iPhone data plan</span>. <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">As Daring Fireball&#8217;s John Gruber <a href="http://daringfireball.net/linked/2009/06/18/appmodo-tethering">notes</a>, that&#8217;s much more than wireless customers outside the U.S. pay for tethering. </span><span style="text-decoration: line-through;">But it&#8217;s <em>cheaper</em> than the rates other AT&amp;T customers already pony up: Blackberry owners currently pay the carrier an additional $60 a month for tethering.</span> UPDATE: Thanks to reader Rob Campbell for catching my error: AT&amp;T charges Blackberry users an additional $15 a month for tethering. So if AT&amp;T really does charge tethering iPhone users $55 a month, it&#8217;s likely to be an all-in-one charge that includes the phone&#8217;s $30 data plan. We&#8217;ll see when the company finally announces pricing, whenever that is.</p>
<p>For what it&#8217;s worth, I&#8217;m not in the chorus of those who think that&#8217;s outrageous: I currently pay Sprint (S) $60 a month for a (pokey) wireless EVDO card with a 5GB data limit, on top of the $100 I pay for an unlimited voice/data plan for my BlackBerry.</p>
<p>ANOTHER (!) UPDATE: Earlier in the day AT&amp;T refused to comment on the $55 pricing plan. Now, via their <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ATT?v=app_7146470109">Facebook page</a> (!), the company confirms that tethering will <em>not</em> cost $55 on top of standard data plans. But it doesn&#8217;t actually say how much tethering <em>will</em> cost. So we&#8217;re back where we started.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apple Inc.&#8217;s iPhone has been a smashing success, redefining the smart-phone market and creating a new hand-held computing platform that has attracted over 50,000 third-party apps, or software programs, in less than a year. With its nearly identical sibling, the iPod Touch, it has sold a combined 40 million units since June 2007, when the computer maker plunged into the phone business.</p>
<p>But the iPhone is drawing increasing competition from entrenched smart-phone makers anxious to emulate the upstart. The most significant of these is Palm&#8217;s (PALM) impressive new Pre, which is off to a good start with an estimated 100,000 or so units sold since it launched on June 6.</p>

<p>So, like a shark, Apple (AAPL) must keep moving. This week, it is introducing two new products designed to consolidate and increase its position as the leader in this new generation of hand-held computers. I&#8217;ve been testing both and I like them a lot, with some minor caveats.</p>
<p>One of the new products is a refreshed model of the iPhone itself, called the iPhone 3G S. It looks the same, but offers more speed, more memory, more battery life, and a few new features, including video recording and a better camera for still photos.</p>
<p>The second is OS 3.0, the third version of the iPhone&#8217;s operating system, which comes on the 3G S and also can be installed on all prior iPhones and Touches. It includes a much longer list of added features, some innovative and some long overdue catch-ups to other phones. These include such widely requested capabilities as cut, copy and paste; systemwide searching; a wider virtual keyboard; and a feature called MMS that allows users to send photos and videos directly to other phones without using email.</p>

<p>Apple last week also made a bold business move to complement these new products. It decided to keep making the current model, the iPhone 3G, and to slash its price by 50%, to $99. That&#8217;s an unheard-of price tag for a pocket computer of this power and versatility, and gives millions of additional consumers a reason to choose the iPhone instead of a competitor.</p>
<p>In my tests, both the new phone and the new operating system performed well, with a few small exceptions. I believe the two strengthen the iPhone platform, make it likely the iPhone will continue to attract scads of apps, and are good for consumers.</p>
<p>But I also regard these changes as more evolutionary than revolutionary, and I don&#8217;t think this latest iPhone is as compelling an upgrade for the average user as the 3G model was last year for owners of the original 2007 iPhone.</p>
<p>Current iPhone owners can get an improved product by merely sticking with their existing phones and upgrading to the feature-laden new operating system, which is free (it costs $10 for iPod Touch owners), rather than shelling out at least $199 for the new iPhone 3G S. And many new iPhone buyers can opt for the $99 3G model, which is not only cheaper, but also greatly improved by the new OS 3.0.</p>
<p>On the other hand, power users will crave the new model&#8217;s much-better performance, battery life, storage and other features. And some will want the new model because, unlike the current model, it&#8217;s capable of handling a new cellular network feature that, in the next few years, will offer double the current data speeds.</p>
<p>The new, free operating system is available for download starting June 17. The iPhone 3G S will go on sale June 19 for $199 for a version with 16 gigabytes of memory, and $299 for 32 gigabytes of memory. Those memory capacities are double the amounts offered on the previous model last year at the same prices, and far exceed the built-in memory on most competing smart phones.</p>
<p>These prices are for new U.S. customers on the AT&#038;T network, plus current owners who are eligible for what AT&#038;T (T) calls a &#8220;standard&#8221; upgrade. If you already own an older iPhone, you could pay $200 more to upgrade, depending on how far along you are in your two-year service contract and how much you spend monthly. But AT&#038;T, stung by criticism in recent days, has just decided to offer the lower, new-customer prices at launch to iPhone 3G owners eligible for upgrades at any time up to Sept. 30 of this year, even if they were originally told they&#8217;d have to pay the $200 premium.</p>
<p>Before I detail the new features and how they worked in my tests, let me state up-front what the new iPhone and its new operating system don&#8217;t deliver. The iPhone still lacks a physical keyboard. It still can&#8217;t run more than one third-party app at a time, as the Pre does. Its otherwise excellent Web browser still can&#8217;t play videos created in Adobe&#8217;s Flash software, which is widely used on the Web. And it still isn&#8217;t available on any U.S. carrier besides AT&#038;T.</p>
<p>Also, AT&#038;T won&#8217;t enable MMS until late this summer, even though dozens of other iPhone carriers in other countries are doing so immediately. And AT&#038;T hasn&#8217;t set a date by which it will offer tethering, a new iPhone feature that allows the device to be used as a modem for a laptop. Other carriers in other countries are allowing this right away.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a rundown of the most important new features of both the new hardware and software, and how they performed in my tests.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">The iPhone 3G S</h5>
<p><strong>Speed:</strong> To me, this is the most important feature of the new iPhone 3G S. In fact, the &#8220;S&#8221; in the name stands for speed. During my week of testing, the new model proved dramatically snappier in every way than my iPhone 3G. Its processor is 50% faster than in the prior model, and it sports a new graphics chip.</p>
<p>Applications opened much more quickly. Web pages loaded far faster. The camera was ready to use almost instantly. And I never once saw the occasional, annoying iPhone behavior where you strike a key while typing and it sits there, seemingly stuck, before you can continue.</p>
<p>Cellular-data speeds were about the same, but in repeated testing on different Wi-Fi networks, the 3G S racked up speeds 30% to 50% faster than on the 3G running at the same time on the same networks.</p>
<p><strong>Battery Life:</strong> On my 3G iPhone, I usually could make it through the day, but it was often a close call, with the battery indicator winding up in the red. By contrast, the new model did much better, never hitting the red zone and rarely requiring interim charging at the office or in the car, even though, because I was testing it, I was pounding it much harder than usual, making more voice calls, playing lots of videos and music, trying numerous apps, constantly downloading email from two accounts, and syncing two calendars over the air.</p>
<p>Apple claims about the same talk time for the new model as on the old, and about the same Web-surfing time over the cellular network. But it says the 3G S gets about 50% more battery life when playing videos or surfing the Internet over Wi-Fi and 25% more time &#8212; an astounding 30 hours &#8212; for continuous music playback.</p>
<p><strong>Memory:</strong> With the new 32-gigabyte model, I was able to store over 3,000 songs, more than 1,600 photos, 74 videos, 67 applications, 400 emails, nearly 1,000 contacts, months of calendar data, and dozens of documents, and still have 5 gigabytes left over&mdash;more than most phones offer out of the box.</p>
<p><strong>Camera:</strong> The new model&#8217;s camera has a 3 megapixel resolution, up from 2 megapixels, and has autofocus and a feature that lets you tap the screen to change the focus to an object or person in the background of a shot. It still lacks zoom or a flash, though it does better in low light. It also has a macro feature for close-up shots. In my tests, all of this worked, but I didn&#8217;t think the pictures it took were dramatically better than those on the old model, and it can&#8217;t compete with phones like Nokia&#8217;s (NOK) new $700 N97, which has a 5-megapixel camera with zoom.</p>
<p><strong>Video:</strong> The new video recorder worked well, even in low light, and lets you post videos directly to YouTube, among other places. You can also trim your videos right on the phone. This all worked well, but the videos aren&#8217;t high definition, and pale in comparison to those on the latest HD model of the popular $229 Flip pocket camcorder.</p>
<p><strong>Voice Control:</strong> By simply holding down the new iPhone&#8217;s home button, you can dial contacts and control music playback by uttering voice commands. The phone will even tell you which song is playing. Like most voice-recognition systems, this one isn&#8217;t perfect. But it worked most of the time.</p>

<p><strong>Compass:</strong> I don&#8217;t consider this important for most users, but it did work when I was walking or driving. It can orient maps in the direction you&#8217;re heading.</p>
<p><strong>Small Touches:</strong> You can optionally turn on a new battery indicator that shows a precise percentage of battery life left. The screen has a new coating that resists oil and grease from fingerprints.</p>
<p><strong>Downsides:</strong> The new phone crashed on me twice during my tests. Once, the voice-control feature killed the sound on the built-in iPod, requiring a reboot. But I couldn&#8217;t replicate this problem. Another time, the phone froze while downloading a TV show. Apple blamed this on a prerelease server issue, and it didn&#8217;t happen again.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">iPhone Operating System 3.0</h5>
<p><strong>Copy, Cut and Paste:</strong> Apple is late with this common feature, but it&#8217;s the best implementation I&#8217;ve seen on a phone. In a text page, you just double tap on a word, and it is selected with little handles around it that let you expand or contract the selected area. Then, you just click on a copy icon that pops up over the selection. To paste, you tap elsewhere in the page, or even in another app, and a paste icon pops up. Click that icon, and the selected text is pasted in. It worked well in all my tests.</p>
<p>The feature works a bit differently for some Web pages, where you hold down your finger over an area and it selects a whole block of text, like a paragraph, but still has the handles that allow adjusting the selection. It also allows copying and pasting photos. You can also just select a word or a section or a whole page of text and delete it. And if you want to undo a paste, just shake the phone.</p>
<p>Some Web pages and third-party apps don&#8217;t yet support this feature, but most do.</p>
<p><strong>Search:</strong> Before, you could search only in the Contacts app. Now, there are search features in Mail, Calendar, the built-in iPod and Notes. And there is a way to search the whole phone at once. You just hit the home button, slowly, twice, and a special search screen appears. Type in any phrase, and it brings up every instance in multiple apps.</p>
<p>This is another catch-up feature, but it works well. For instance, when I searched for the word &#8220;Phil,&#8221; it brought up songs by Phil Collins, a note about Philadelphia, calendar items mentioning people named Phil or Phillips, emails to or from people with those names, and contacts for people named Phil or Phillips.</p>
<p>In email, the search function will even find messages that aren&#8217;t on your phone but that are stored on the servers of certain email services. For instance, I was able to almost instantly find emails from two years ago stored on Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Gmail.</p>
<p>One downside &#8212; in email, search looks for words only in email headers, not in the body of the messages.</p>
<p><strong>Landscape Keyboard:</strong> In older iPods, the only built-in program that supported a wider, landscape keyboard, which is better for thumb typing, was the Web browser. Now, you can turn the phone horizontally and use a landscape keyboard in the Mail, Messages and Notes programs as well.</p>
<p><strong>Find My iPhone:</strong> If you belong to Apple&#8217;s $99 a year MobileMe service, you can now locate a lost iPhone on a map on any computer, send the iPhone a message saying how to return it to you, and cause it to emit a beep, even if the sound is turned off. I tested this and it worked well. You can even remotely wipe all your data off the phone.</p>
<p><strong>Voice Memos:</strong> The OS includes a Voice Memo app that lets you dictate reminders or other messages, and then edit and email them. I found it worked well.</p>
<p><strong>Navigation:</strong> Another catch-up feature, turn-by-turn navigation with voice prompts, is also now supported. I tested this with a third-party app called Gokivo, and it did OK, though the developer admits to a prerelease bug I encountered.</p>
<p><strong>Auto-Authentication:</strong> In the new OS, the iPhone can remember your log-in credentials for commercial Wi-Fi hotspot services, so you don&#8217;t have to enter them again and again. Unfortunately, in my tests with the AT&#038;T Wi-Fi service, this failed repeatedly in several Starbucks (SBUX) shops. Apple blames a glitch in my prerelease phone&#8217;s SIM card.</p>
<p><strong>Push Notification:</strong> To make up for its lack of multitasking, the new iPhone OS has a feature where third-party apps can notify you of new events, like a sports score, or a new invitation to an online game. I tried this with a game called TapTap Revenge, and it worked fine.</p>
<p><strong>Stocks:</strong> The built-in stock application now has much more detailed data, including market cap, news headlines and price/earnings ratio for each stock.</p>
<p><strong>MMS and Tethering:</strong> I couldn&#8217;t test these useful features because my tests were all done on AT&#038;T, which hasn&#8217;t rolled them out.</p>
<p><strong>Minor Touches:</strong> You can now move an icon among screens with one continuous motion, instead of stopping at each screen. And there are two more screens to house icons. You can finally synchronize Notes with your PC or Mac. You also can now maintain both calendars and contacts synced wirelessly with online services and those synced via cable with your computer. And you can play games and transfer files wirelessly over Bluetooth with other iPods or Touches that are nearby.</p>
<p><strong>Bottom Line:</strong> Both the new iPhone and iPhone OS are packed with features that make a great product even better. But, for many users, the software may be enough of a boost to keep them from buying the new model.</p>

<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/iphone-att.jpg" alt="iphone-att" title="iphone-att" width="150" height="120" class="alignright size-full wp-image-19627" />Welcome news for folks who love the iPhone, but hate AT&#038;T. The increasing prevalence of exclusivity agreements between wireless carriers and cellphone manufacturers, like the one between Apple (AAPL) and AT&#038;T (T), is drawing some government scrutiny. Four U.S. senators are urging the Federal Communications Commission to review such deals with an eye toward determining whether they unfairly restrict consumer choice and hamper competition. In <a href="http://kerry.senate.gov/cfm/record.cfm?id=314462">a letter</a>, the four asked that the Commission specifically consider the following:</p>
<ul>
<li>Whether exclusivity agreements are becoming increasingly prevalent between dominant wireless carriers and handset manufacturers</li>
<p> </p>
<li>Whether exclusivity agreements are restricting consumer choice with respect to which handsets are available depending on a consumer’s geographic region, particularly for consumers living in rural America</li>
<p> </p>
<li>Whether exclusivity agreements place limitations on a consumer’s ability to take full advantage of handset technologies, such as the ability to send multimedia messages or the ability to “tether” a device to a computer for Internet use.</li>
<p> </p>
<li>Whether exclusivity agreements are manipulating the competitive marketplace between commercial wireless carriers. Specifically, whether the ability for a dominant carrier to reach an exclusive agreement with a handset manufacturer is inhibiting the ability of smaller, more regional carriers to compete</li>
<p> </p>
<li>Whether exclusivity agreements play a role in encouraging or discouraging innovation within the handset marketplace</li>
</ul>
<p>An interesting list and one that seems to single out AT&#038;T, though it doesn’t mention the carrier by name. Indeed, limiting “a consumer’s ability to take full advantage of handset technologies, such as the ability to send multimedia messages or the ability to &#8216;tether&#8217; a device to a computer for Internet use” is exactly what AT&#038;T will do later this week when the iPhone 3G S and iPhone OS 3.0 debut without the carrier&#8217;s support for their new tethering and MMS capabilities.</p>
<p>And then there’s this: The iPhone 3G S is compatible with high-speed packet access 7.2 technology, which offers theoretical peak download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. But AT&#038;T doesn’t plan to begin deploying HSPA 7.2 until  later this year and the company doesn’t expect to complete the rollout until 2011.</p>
<p>Finally, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121124652636205577.html">the company’s refusal to sell the iPhone in rural areas where it provides only roaming coverage</a> certainly restricts “consumer choice with respect to which handsets are available depending on a consumer’s geographic region, particularly for consumers living in rural America.”</p>
<p>Clearly, if the senators responsible for this letter were looking for a case study for the problems with  exclusive carrier-device agreements, they’ve got one ready-made in AT&#038;T.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Digital-picture frames have started to take off as a way for people to show off their stashes of digital photos in rotating slide shows. A growing number of frames even connect to wireless home networks so they can easily be refreshed with photos stored online and on PCs.</p>
<p>But keeping those types of digital-photo frames up-to-date with new pictures demands more technical skill than many parents and grandparents are likely to have. It requires, for example, rudimentary knowledge of how to configure a home Wi-Fi network or shuttle storage cards between a frame and a digital camera. Still, digital frames are a great way to keep generations in touch with, say, a far-flung child&#8217;s latest ballet recital or a football game.</p>
<p>Just in time for the holidays, the wireless carrier T-Mobile is selling a digital-photo frame that makes it easy to set up and to keep fresh. While I found the Cameo excels in its simplicity, it comes with a number of annoying drawbacks and a pricing model that will limit its appeal. It sells for a reasonable $99.99 in T-Mobile stores, but carries a hefty $9.99 monthly fee.</p>
<p>Still, Cameo is an exciting first edition of a product.</p>
<p>First, its strengths. The picture frame is as easy to operate as a cellphone, containing some of the same technical innards of a wireless handset. And each Cameo has a unique phone number, just like a cellphone, that lets anyone who knows the number to &#8220;dial&#8221; it up &#8212; sending messages containing digital photographs instead of voice calls.</p>
<p>Setting up Cameo is as easy as taking it out of a box, screwing a stick into the back to prop up the frame and plugging it into an electrical outlet. The Cameo has a seven-inch color display and one of the more attractive borders I&#8217;ve seen on a digital photo frame: imitation black leather with white stitching.</p>
<p>Users themselves can manually load images onto the frame from a PC by connecting it through a USB cable or by inserting a miniature storage card from a digital camera.</p>
<p>Cameo can receive pictures wirelessly two ways. The owner of the frame hands out the Cameo&#8217;s phone number to friends and family members, who then send pictures to the frame that were taken with the cameras standard on most modern cellphones. This method uses MMS, or multimedia messaging service, a communications standard normally used to share pictures and other media between cellphones.</p>
<p>Cameo owners also can give out an email address for their picture frames that is based on their Cameo&#8217;s phone number, allowing people to email images that they&#8217;ve downloaded to their computers from digital cameras.</p>
<p>The first time the frame receives a picture from an email address or phone number, Cameo asks the frame owner to push a button on the back of the frame to place the sender on an approved list. After that, all images from the approved source appear automatically on the frame &#8212; a method that at least keeps random people&#8217;s photos from popping up in grandma&#8217;s living room.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a wonderful unpredictability to how Cameo works. Imagine all of the kids and grandkids in a sprawling family room in different locations being able to send snapshots to each other. This is possible now with photo-sharing sites like Flickr, but those typically require going to a Web site. Images on a Cameo just show up without warning on your kitchen countertop, living room or office desk.</p>
<p>I handed out my Cameo number to some colleagues and was delighted when their cameraphone pictures began trickling into my frame, including a shot of the New York neighborhood in which one of them lives, and an image of another colleague ice skating.</p>
<p>The Cameo&#8217;s screen, featuring 720&#215;480 pixels, isn&#8217;t the highest-resolution digital photo frame on the market, but the pictures looked fine to me. You can do a slide show for any number of images, chose a fade-out or other transition, change the order of the photos and alter the display speed &#8212; holding a single image for up to an hour.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the frame has a skimpy 64 megabytes of memory, and storage capacity isn&#8217;t expandable. There is enough room for only about 200 photos at maximum size. Once it&#8217;s full, you have to make room by manually deleting photos.</p>
<p>Another problem is that the frame currently is available only to existing T-Mobile cellular subscribers.</p>
<p>By far, the biggest turnoff is the monthly fee for the cellular service that delivers the pictures to the frame. There&#8217;s no limit on how many pictures can be sent to a Cameo under T-Mobile&#8217;s cellular plan, but $120 a year is a steep price.</p>
<p>The carrier says it will consider other pricing options in the future. Until it does, it&#8217;s going to be tough for most people to buy the Cameo, even for a beloved family member.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>To its fiercest devotees, one of the best things about the BlackBerry is its carefully designed physical keyboard, which the skilled BlackBerry addict can play like a violin. These folks scorn Apple&#8217;s popular iPhone, whose keyboard is virtual and must be operated by tapping on the screen.</p>
<p>But, on Friday, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=vz'>Verizon Wireless</a> and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=RIMM'>Research in Motion</a> (RIMM), the BlackBerry&#8217;s maker, will do the unthinkable: They will introduce a BlackBerry model without a physical keyboard, one where typing and navigating require tapping on glass, just as users do on the iPhone. This new model is called the BlackBerry Storm, and will sell for $250 with a two-year contract, though a $50 mail-in rebate can bring the price down close to the $199 that Apple (AAPL) charges for the base model of the iPhone.</p>

<p>Despite its lack of a keyboard, the Storm is a real BlackBerry in every other respect, with push email, corporate features and the familiar BlackBerry menus. In many respects, the Storm is a touch-based, large-screen version of the recently released BlackBerry Bold, which is the most polished version of a traditional BlackBerry. It is also the latest member of the new class of hand-held computers, the super-smart phone category kicked off by the iPhone last year and joined by the Google G1 earlier this year.</p>
<p>The Storm sports a large, high-resolution touch screen that fills most of its surface and automatically switches from portrait to landscape mode when the phone is turned. There&#8217;s also a forthcoming souped-up download store for third-party software, meant to be similar to the ones on the iPhone and the Google (GOOG) phone. And the Storm can even be used in European and other countries where most Verizon (VZ) phones don&#8217;t work.</p>

<p>However, the biggest innovation in the Storm is a clever feature RIM hopes will give it a big advantage over the iPhone. When you strike a key or icon on the Storm&#8217;s screen, you feel a physical sensation, as if you were pressing down on a real key or button. That&#8217;s because you are, in fact, pressing a real button. The entire glass display is one large button, mounted on a mechanical substructure that allows it to be depressed when pressure is applied.</p>
<p>The idea behind this feature is to make typing on glass feel much more like typing on a real keyboard, and thus to make the virtual keyboard, and the touch interface, more acceptable to people used to physical keyboards and buttons. This push-down screen also replaces the side-mounted scroll wheel or track ball on other BlackBerrys for activating menu choices and icons.</p>
<p>But, in my tests, this physical feedback feature, which RIM calls SurePress, didn&#8217;t magically turn the Storm&#8217;s touch interface and virtual keyboard into their physical counterparts. The feature does provide a more reassuring confirmation that a key has been struck or an icon has been clicked than the mere visual feedback one receives from the iPhone. But neither I, nor any of the several BlackBerry addicts I asked to try it out, considered typing on the Storm&#8217;s keyboard to be very similar to using the keyboard of a traditional full-sized BlackBerry.</p>
<p>In my opinion, using the Storm&#8217;s keyboard is much more like using the iPhone&#8217;s keyboard than a traditional BlackBerry&#8217;s. I found that I could type quite well on the Storm after awhile, but that a greater adjustment, and more practice, were required than with a physical keyboard.</p>
<p>The Storm also has a keyboard oddity that I found annoying, and that may put off others. It presents you with a full virtual keyboard only when you are holding it horizontally. When you hold the Storm vertically, you get a mashed-up keyboard, like the one on the narrower BlackBerry Pearl, which has multiple letters on each key. This keyboard design relies on software to guess which letter you meant to press. You can also switch to a virtual cellphone-style keypad that requires you to hit each key multiple times.</p>

<p>This is a curious design decision. Once a company ditches a physical keyboard for a virtual one, it can create all kinds of keyboard variations. RIM could have offered a full, vertically oriented keyboard, even if it would have had smaller, more closely spaced keys.</p>
<p>RIM also failed to customize the Storm&#8217;s virtual keyboard for some common, specific tasks. For instance, on the iPhone, when you are typing in a Web address in the browser, the keyboard morphs to offer a convenient key that automatically enters &#8220;.com&#8221;. Not so on the Storm.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s another glaring deficit in the Storm: It lacks Wi-Fi capability. This means that, unlike on the Bold, the iPhone or the Google G1, if high-speed cellphone data service is absent or pokey, you can&#8217;t fall back on speedy Wi-Fi connections in public places. And, at home or in the office, you can&#8217;t take advantage of Wi-Fi connections that are often much faster than cellphone data networks.</p>
<p>The Storm has some important advantages over the iPhone. Its screen, while 7% smaller physically, offers about 13% higher resolution. Photos and videos look beautiful on it. It has much better battery life for phone calls than either the iPhone or the Google G1. While the latter two phones deliver just under their claimed five hours of talk time, in my tests, the Storm lasted a bit over six hours, which is actually half an hour more than its claimed 5.5 hours of talk time. And the Storm has a removable battery, unlike its Apple rival.</p>
<p>This new BlackBerry comes with more memory than the similarly priced base model of the iPhone &#8212; nine gigabytes versus eight gigabytes. And, unlike the iPhone&#8217;s memory, the Storm&#8217;s is expandable, via larger flash cards.</p>
<p>The Storm&#8217;s camera is much better than the iPhone&#8217;s, at 3.2 megapixels, versus just 2 megapixels for the Apple device. It also has zoom and flash, features the iPhone&#8217;s camera lacks. And, unlike the iPhone or the Google G1, the Storm can record videos. In my tests, all of these camera features worked well.</p>
<p>Also, the Storm has copy and paste functionality; MMS (a service for sending photos directly to other phones without using email); voice dialing; and the ability to act as a modem for your laptop. It also allows you to edit, and not just to view, Microsoft (MSFT) Office documents. All of these features are missing from the iPhone out of the box.</p>
<p>The Storm also has a better speaker than the iPhone, and a noise-canceling microphone system. Phone calls, even on speaker phone, were crisp, clear and plenty loud. Physically, the Storm is attractive but hardly svelte. While it&#8217;s about the same length and width as the iPhone, it is 15% thicker and 17% heavier &#8212; almost as heavy as the chunky G1.</p>
<p>The Verizon high-speed network on which the Storm runs is older and better-established than either the T-Mobile (DT) high-speed system the G1 uses or the AT&#038;T (T) 3G network used by the current iPhone. Where Verizon&#8217;s high-speed data coverage is strong, the Storm flies.</p>
<p>But, because it lacks Wi-Fi, the Storm can be much slower at Web access than its main competitors. I tested these Web speeds in two hotels in Silicon Valley. In the first, where Verizon reception was strong, the Storm trounced the iPhone on cellphone data speeds, averaging over 800 kilobits per second to the iPhone&#8217;s 621 kbps over AT&#038;T. But, when I switched the iPhone to use the hotel&#8217;s Wi-Fi network, it beat the Storm by 100 kbps or so.</p>
<p>At the second hotel, barely a mile away, the Storm&#8217;s lack of Wi-Fi hurt much more. There, Verizon&#8217;s signal was poor, and data speeds on the Storm averaged a horrible 96 kbps. But the iPhone on AT&#038;T averaged 459 kbps, and on Wi-Fi the iPhone averaged 785 kbps.</p>
<p>My test Storm, which was a near-final model missing only a few minor software tweaks, was also sluggish at some tasks. It took noticeably longer than the iPhone to flip the first photo from landscape to portrait orientation, or to start the process of flipping through a series of photos by swiping them with a finger. And some other tasks were also slow. It&#8217;s possible that production models will be quicker.</p>
<p>Rim has tweaked the familiar BlackBerry user interface for the touch screen, and in general these changes worked well. You select the menu item or icon you want with a light touch, then press down on the screen to activate or confirm your choice. There are even a couple of cool new touch features. For instance, in a list of emails, if you lightly touch and hold one entry, the Storm shows you all messages in that thread.</p>
<p>But this combination of a light touch followed by a hard press on the large screen took some practice, just like typing did. It befuddled several BlackBerry veterans at first.</p>
<p>And some common tasks took more steps than on the iPhone. For instance, emailing a link from a Web page required four steps on the Storm, versus two on the Apple device. The Storm&#8217;s email system will be familiar to every BlackBerry user. It has the same corporate email features as other BlackBerrys, and I was easily able as well to use a BlackBerry Internet email account and to set up several personal email accounts, including Gmail.</p>
<p>The Web browser is much improved over the one in older BlackBerry models, and offers multiple ways to view and navigate pages, including one in which a finger moves a cursor, just as on a PC. But I found that panning and zooming in the browser was a bit slower and more awkward than on the iPhone. And, to make some Web sites work properly, I had to dig through menus to change options.</p>
<p>Using the BlackBerry desktop software, I was easily able to synchronize my calendar and contact data over a cable from a Windows PC. (There&#8217;s also Mac software for the same task.) But, unlike the iPhone or the G1, the Storm doesn&#8217;t offer wireless synchronization from consumer services, only from corporate servers.</p>
<p>The Storm&#8217;s multimedia software isn&#8217;t as fancy as the iPhone&#8217;s, but it&#8217;s better than the G1&#8242;s, and worked very well in my tests.</p>
<p>Overall, the Storm is a very capable handheld computer that will appeal to BlackBerry users who have been pining for a touch-controlled device with a larger screen. And it offers yet another good option for anyone who is looking to buy one of the new, more powerful, pocket computers.</p>

<p>Wonderful additions to the platform, all of them. Of course, there are still quite a few missing. MMS support would be nice, wouldn&#8217;t it? As would support for Flash and the ability to compose messages in landscape mode.</p>
<p>And what about cut-and-paste? Seriously, at this point, it&#8217;s almost like Apple (AAPL) is purposely withholding it, out of spite.</p>

<p>I have been testing the G1 extensively, in multiple cities and in multiple scenarios. In general, I like it and consider it a worthy competitor to the iPhone. Both devices run on fast 3G phone networks and include Wi-Fi. Both have smart-touch interfaces and robust Web browsers. Both have the ability to easily download third-party apps, or programs.</p>
<p>But the two devices have different strengths and weaknesses, and are likely to attract different types of users.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve been lusting after the iPhone&#8217;s functionality, but didn&#8217;t like its virtual keyboard or its user interface or its U.S. carrier, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=t'>AT&#038;T</a>, the G1 may be just the ticket for you. But it does have some significant downsides.</p>
<p>By far, the G1&#8242;s biggest differentiator is that it has a physical keyboard, which is revealed by sliding open the screen. The keyboard proved only fair in my tests, with keys that are too flat and that can be hard to see in bright light, and with a bulge in the body on the right side that you have to reach over to type. But, for the many people who can&#8217;t stomach typing on glass, the G1 keyboard will be a welcome sight. It&#8217;s complemented by a BlackBerry-like trackball for navigation.</p>

<p>The G1 has a removable battery and uses removable, expandable memory cards. And it&#8217;s even a bit cheaper than its Apple (AAPL) rival: $179 versus $199. Its data plan also costs less &#8212; $25 a month versus $30 &#8212; and includes 400 free text messages, which cost extra on the iPhone. There&#8217;s also a $35 plan that includes unlimited text messages. And both plans include free use of T-Mobile&#8217;s Wi-Fi hotspots.</p>
<p>The G1 has a slick, clever touch interface to go along with its keyboard, and it includes a powerful new operating system. The operating system, called Android, was built by Google (GOOG). It is slated to appear on other phones over time, though it likely will look different on other devices because it is fully open to modification by other companies.</p>
<p>On the G1, the touch interface is fast and smooth. Programs appear when you drag up a tab at the bottom of the screen, and notifications of new messages can be read by simply dragging down the top bar of the screen.</p>
<p>You get much more flexibility in organizing your desktop than on the iPhone. In addition to placing icons for programs there, you can add individual contacts, music playlists, folders, Web pages and more. You just press on the screen for a longer-than-usual time, and a list of items you can add appears. It also has a higher-resolution camera than the iPhone, but like the Apple phone, it can&#8217;t shoot video.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also much easier to place a phone call on the G1 than on the iPhone. You can just start typing a contact name or phone number while on the home screen, sparing you the need to enter the phone or contacts program. And there&#8217;s a virtual phone keypad that allows you to avoid opening the physical keyboard just to dial a number. It&#8217;s also much easier to jump to the top and bottom of long lists.</p>
<p>The G1&#8242;s Web browser, built on the same technology as the iPhone&#8217;s, worked well at rendering scores of common sites in my tests. You can either pan around pages with your finger, or choose to view the whole page at once and zero-in on a section by moving a small rectangle around.</p>
<p>This first Android phone, which was largely designed by Google and built by Taiwan-based HTC, also includes some key features Apple omitted. These include a limited ability to copy and paste text, and the ability to send photos directly to other phones without relying on email, a common phone feature called MMS, or Multimedia Messaging Service. And, unlike AT&#038;T (T), T-Mobile (DT) will even allow users to legally unlock the phone after 90 days and start using it on another carrier, provided you pay a hefty early-termination fee.</p>

<p>In my battery tests, the G1 lasted through the day, but I had to charge it every night. That&#8217;s better than the initial battery life on the current iPhone, though in fairness, Apple has improved the iPhone&#8217;s battery life through software updates, and I found them to be about the same for mixed use.</p>
<p>In my talk-time test, the G1 got just under its claimed five hours, about 19 minutes better than the iPhone.</p>
<p>There are two email programs: one for Google&#8217;s Gmail, another for all other email services. There&#8217;s an instant-messaging program that works with multiple services. There&#8217;s one program for accessing Google&#8217;s YouTube service and another for Google Maps. The G1&#8242;s Google Maps program even has a feature, coming soon as well to the iPhone, that offers photographic street views of certain locations. But the G1, unlike the iPhone, includes a compass that orients the street views as you walk.</p>
<p>The built-in download store for third-party programs, called Market, worked well in my tests. I was able to quickly download games, productivity programs, and other apps and, unlike Apple, Google says it isn&#8217;t blocking any programs.</p>
<p>However, the G1 also has downsides. It&#8217;s a chunky brick of a device. While it&#8217;s a bit narrower than the iPhone and feels OK in the hand, it&#8217;s almost 20% heavier and nearly 30% thicker. It also has a smaller screen and doesn&#8217;t accept standard stereo headphones.</p>
<p>The G1 also skimps on memory. It comes with only 1 gigabyte of storage, just one-eighth of what the base iPhone offers. To increase the G1&#8242;s memory, you have to lay out more money to buy a larger memory card.</p>
<p>The G1 also limits third-party applications to a paltry 128 megabytes of memory. At one point in my tests, after downloading a bunch of third-party programs, and adding songs and videos, the G1 warned me it was running out of room, a warning I have never seen on my heavily used iPhone.</p>
<p>Another downside for some users: The G1 is tightly tied to Google&#8217;s online services. While you can use non-Google email and IM services, the only way you can get contacts and calendar items into the phone is to synchronize with Google&#8217;s online calendar and contacts services. In fact, you can&#8217;t even use the G1 without a Google user ID and password.</p>
<p>The G1 doesn&#8217;t allow the use of Microsoft&#8217;s Exchange service for email, contacts or calendar items, or any other company&#8217;s over-the-air synchronization for contacts and appointments.</p>
<p>In my tests, synchronizing with Gmail, and with Google&#8217;s contacts and calendar applications, was smooth and fast. So, the G1 may be great for dedicated Google users, but not so good for folks who rely on competing calendar and contacts services from, say, Yahoo (YHOO) or Microsoft (MSFT). Future Android phones may not be so tightly tied to Google services, but the G1 is.</p>
<p>It also can&#8217;t synchronize any data at all directly with a PC or Mac. For instance, it can&#8217;t sync with Microsoft Outlook or Windows Media Player on a PC, with Apple&#8217;s iCal or Address Book programs on a Mac, or with iTunes on either Windows or the Mac. It has no PC-based synchronization software of its own, and it offers no way to automatically back up your settings, music, applications, videos or photos, either to a computer or to an online repository, though Google says it plans to add a backup feature.</p>
<p>To get Outlook or iCal data onto the G1, you must install add-on software. To get your songs, videos and photos onto the G1, you must plug the phone, or its memory card, into your computer and manually move the files over.</p>
<p>Overall, I found the G1&#8242;s user interface inferior to the iPhone&#8217;s. It lacks the iPhone&#8217;s ability to flick between multiple pictures and Web pages, or to zoom in and zoom out of a photo or Web page by simply using two fingers to &#8220;pinch&#8221; or expand the image. It also doesn&#8217;t automatically change the orientation of the screen from portrait to landscape simply by turning the phone.</p>
<p>Further, many common controls that are easily visible on the iPhone can be accessed on the G1 only by pressing a menu button or by using keyboard shortcuts you have to memorize. Examples are stopping the loading of a Web page or moving forward to the next Web page.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also no on-screen keyboard even for quick tasks, such as typing Web addresses, so you&#8217;re constantly having to turn the phone and open the physical keyboard, which quickly becomes a pain.</p>
<p>The G1 also is a greatly inferior multimedia device when compared with the iPhone. Its music player, while adequate, isn&#8217;t as nice as the built-in iPod on the iPhone. And it lacks a video player altogether, though a rudimentary one can be downloaded from the Market. The G1 does come with a program for buying songs from Amazon (AMZN), which worked well in my tests.</p>
<p>And then there&#8217;s the network. Despite all the troubles AT&#038;T has experienced with its fast 3G network, which is still being built out, that company has 3G service for the iPhone and other devices in 320 U.S. metro areas. By contrast, T-Mobile offers 3G in just 20 U.S. metro areas. Eight more cities are due to come online by year end, which will still leave T-Mobile&#8217;s 3G coverage far behind that of AT&#038;T and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=vz'>Verizon</a> (VZ), which will soon introduce its own iPhone competitor, the BlackBerry Storm.</p>
<p>I did 40 speed tests comparing the G1 and the iPhone to see how fast they could download a Web page over 3G. The tests, conducted in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Washington, D.C., showed the iPhone to be consistently faster, by an average of between 50 and 100 kilobytes per second, even though T-Mobile&#8217;s network was carrying much less traffic than AT&#038;T&#8217;s.</p>
<p>Overall, the G1 is a very good first effort, and a godsend for people who prefer physical keyboards or T-Mobile but want to be part of the new world of powerful pocket computers.</p>
