Of course, because Silicon Valley is possibly the least sexy of places, any whiff of a scandal involving a powerful CEO and a blonde model/actress/cougar/contractor is going to get the lion’s share of the attention in the coverage. Thus, the resignation Friday of Hewlett-Packard head Mark Hurd and the private settlement with consultant Jodie Fisher have morphed into a juicy summer potboiler. Today, when the markets open, we’ll see if any of it matters to Wall Street or if investors have moved on to trying to determine the next moves for the tech giant and its leadership.

Microsoft’s first series of Web video ads for Internet Explorer 8 didn’t seem to garner much attention. But its latest one did: It features a married couple, an unspeakable porn site and a lot of vomit. Now Redmond says that was probably a mistake.

Google Tries Squeezing More Money Out of YouTube

Google’s two-pronged “get serious” strategy–cut costs while finding new places to earn pennies here and there–continues. The latest effort: an extension of the affiliate sales program it introduced to YouTube last fall. It’s a small move, but Google has been making a lot of small moves lately.

Here’s what a top-notch source at Yahoo joked to me tonight, after Microsoft walked away from its unsolicited takeover bid to acquire the long-troubled Internet giant. “Google is now officially our best friend.” Oh no. Instantly, an image popped into my brain–that of the slithery Kaa singing “Trust in Me (The Python Song)” to Mowgli from the Disney classic animated film, “The Jungle Book.”
