The mobile browsing experience on Research in Motion’s BlackBerry is widely considered among the worst around. Inefficient and miserably slow, it is easily bested not just by the browsers of rival smartphones like Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, but by third-party alternatives like Opera Mini. So long-suffering BlackBerry owners will be glad to hear that an all-new Web browser is on the way.

During his keynote address at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, this morning, RIM (RIMM) co-CEO Mike Lazaridis demonstrated the forthcoming browser, which is based on the same WebKit rendering engine used by the iPhone and phones based on Google’s (GOOG) Android OS. Slated for release sometime later this year, the browser is allegedly more network-efficient than its rivals and handles AJAX, CSS and HTML5 with ease.

Indeed, Lazaridis said it scored 100 percent on the Acid 3 test for Web rendering. Seems RIM’s acquisition of browser-design firm Torch Mobile last year was a wise one–albeit late. Lazaridis also said the browser will be available sometime later this year. Below, two video demos.

Silicon Valley luminary and Golden Geek cover model Marc Andreessen is adding another gig to his CV: Hewlett-Packard director. Andreessen, who sold his software company, Opsware, to HP two years ago for $1.6 billion, will begin serving on the board immediately, bringing its total number of directors to 11.

Quite a coup for HP. Andreesen–who co-authored Mosaic, the browser that popularized the World Wide Web–is an icon in Silicon Valley and his expertise is highly sought. In addition to helming his new venture capital firm, Andreessen-Horowitz, Andreesen also serves as chairman of social networking outfit Ning and sits on the boards of eBay (EBAY) and Facebook. HP (HPQ) is lucky to get him, if only because it seems unfathomable that he’d have the time or bandwidth for anything else.

“Marc Andreessen is a software pioneer whose leadership has helped shape the Internet,” an ebullient HP CEO Mark Hurd said in a statement. “Marc’s entrepreneurial background and industry expertise will be a welcome addition to the HP board of directors.”

Remember a month ago, when the New York Times said it had reached an agreement with a holdout union at the Boston Globe, which would prevent a shutdown of the Times-owned paper?

Scratch that. Deal's off.

Remember a month ago, when the New York Times (NYT) said it had reached an agreement with a holdout union at the Boston Globe, which would prevent a shutdown of the Times-owned paper?

Scratch that. Deal’s off.

The Newspaper Guild, which represents some 600 editorial employees at the Globe, narrowly rejected the agreement tonight, forcing the ball back into the Times’ court. The Times had said it would need to shutter the Globe if it couldn’t extract $20 million in savings from the Globe’s unions. And, the Guild was supposed to provide $10 million of that via the proposed deal, which included an 8.4 percent pay cut. The Globe’s management had previously said it would cut pay 23 percent if the union rejected the deal.

The Times, which paid $1.1 billion for the Globe in 1993 (a year before the Netscape Mosaic Web browser launched) has argued that it needs to hack out big savings from the paper because it’s on track to lost $85 million this year.

But this interesting take by Poynter Media analyst Rick Edmonds argues that that figure overstates the case, since that total includes one-time charges, and paper losses for depreciation, etc.

Statement from Globe management:

We are disappointed that in a close vote of 277 to 265 the Boston Newspaper Guild did not ratify the Globe’s final proposal. As we have stated, the $10 million in cost savings from this multifaceted proposal is essential to The Boston Globe’s financial future.

This evening we have sent a letter to the Guild stating that as a result of the rejection of this proposal, we have reverted to our alternative Final Record Proposal which provides for a 23% wage reduction for all Guild members. This will secure the $10 million in costs savings needed from the Guild and will allow the Globe to reach the targeted $20 million in savings needed from all our major unions.

Since the parties are at an impasse, the Globe will implement the wage reduction effective next week. We have told the Guild that we are available to meet any day this week to review implementation of the pay cut.

We regret having to take this action, but have no financially viable alternative.

Netscape’s long day’s journey into irrelevance is nearly over. Come March, the storied browser–born in 1994 out of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications’ groundbreaking Mosaic–will be officially pensioned off, a paltry 0.61% share the only testament to its long-faded market dominance.

After extending support for Netscape for an additional month after first declaring it EOL last December, AOL is finally pulling the plug and recommending that users migrate to Firefox or Flock. “AOL’s focus on transitioning to an ad-supported Web business leaves little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be,” the Netscape team explained. “Given AOL’s current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically acclaimed products, we feel it’s the right time to end development of Netscape-branded browsers, hand the reins fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox.”

Netscape users who can’t bear the thought of surfing the Web without that inconic “N” in the upper right hand corner of their browser window can reskin Firefox with a retro Netscape look if they’re of a mind to.
