Google Bumps Up Size, Cost of Motorola Cuts

Google says that cuts at its newly acquired Motorola Mobility unit will be broader than it first thought, and it will now spend $300 million on severance charges. In August, the company told investors that those charges would cost $275 million. Google says it will also spend another $90 million on “other charges related to facility and market exits,” and says more cuts and charges may come, “some of which may be significant.”

Motorola Cuts Will Cost Google at Least $275 Million

Saving money at Motorola won’t be cheap for Google. The search giant says it will take a “severance-related charge” of up to $275 million when it lays off some 4,000 workers this year. Google tells investors that overhauling Motorola will end up generating other losses, as well. “Although Google cannot currently predict the amount of these other charges at this time, these additional charges could be significant.”
