<p>The activist shareholder wants four of Yahoo&#8217;s board seats, one of which he wants to occupy himself.</p>
<p>His other nominees: <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/harry-wilson/4/ab1/26b">MAEVA Group CEO Harry Wilson</a>, a &#8220;restructuring expert&#8221;; Michael J. Wolf, the media consultant who also served as chief operating officer at Viacom&#8217;s MTV Networks for a stint; and Jeff Zucker, the former CEO of NBC Universal who left once Comcast acquired the media conglomerate.</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1011006/000089914012000135/t7465280.htm">filing with the SEC</a>, Loeb says he&#8217;s glad to see <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120117/jerry-yang-leaves-yahoo/">Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang head out the door</a>, to be <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120207/exclusive-four-yahoo-board-members-to-depart-two-new-ones-arrive-and-three-more-on-the-way-like-i-said/">followed by board chair Roy Bostock and three other board members</a>. But that&#8217;s not enough, he says &#8212; Yahoo needs people who know how to turn the company around, and it needs people who know the media business:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Although the Reporting Persons are pleased to see the Retiring Directors acceding to the Reporting Persons’ previous demands that they leave the Board, they believe the recently announced changes do not put the Issuer on the right track towards maximizing shareholder value. Installing the hand-picked choices of the current Board does nothing to allay investor fears that Yahoo is poised to repeat the errors of its past. In order to protect and instill confidence in the Issuer’s shareholders, the Reporting Persons believe it is imperative to accelerate the transition of the Retiring Directors and introduce new outside nominees from relevant financial and business backgrounds. The Reporting Persons believe that recent changes do not demonstrate convincingly that Board and shareholder interests are fully aligned, nor that this Board has the fresh perspective and necessary experience to overhaul the Company’s challenged organizational and operating structure.</p>
<p>While the Newly-Appointed Directors possess certain specific technology credentials, key elements of a balanced strategy remain unaddressed at the Board level, fueling further concerns. Recent press reports indicating that the Board’s current strategic direction is to emphasize the technology aspects of the Issuer’s business at the expense of advertising and media, which accounts for the vast majority of the Issuer’s revenues. The Reporting Persons believe that this approach places the Issuer’s core revenue generating capability at substantial risk, fails to recognize the tremendous growth opportunity in video, and directly results from a dearth of essential expertise in media and entertainment at the Board level.</p>
<p>Finally, the Reporting Persons believe that the Board lacks an expert in the type of fundamental corporate restructuring the Issuer requires, along with an independent investor representative aligned with the Issuer’s shareholder base. The reluctance of the Board to prioritize shareholder value to date – evidenced by years of deferring and delaying comprehensive strategic initiatives and missing out on myriad accretive transactions and strategic opportunities – will no longer be tolerated or endorsed by investors. Shareholders deserve earnest representation and oversight as the Issuer confronts the critical investment and capital allocation decisions it expects to face in the next few months.</p></blockquote>
<p>Snapshot bios of Loeb&#8217;s three amigos:</p>
<ul>
<li>Wilson is a PE guy who put in time at Blackstone Group and Silver Point Capital.</li>
<li>Zucker was once a wunderkind at NBC, where he started out running the Today Show, but was widely criticized by the time he left.</li>
<li>Wolf has spent most of his career offering advice to big media companies.</li>
</ul>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Having some money all of a sudden is a weird thing. I&#8217;ve always wondered what entrepreneurs do when they hit it. What do they buy, if at all? How do they react to newfound ducats?</p>
<p>Does life become a 90s rap video? Cham&#8217; bustin&#8217; 24/7?</p>
<p>I basically had no money in my twenties.</p>
<p>I was luckier than most, my parents helped with the rent and I had spending cash via the Web design firm I started in 1995, Mischief New Media. My clients were &#8220;major&#8221; record labels and I designed Web sites for their artists. I wasn&#8217;t that great and as soon as the Web started taking off they brought those things in-house. But I had a knack for product development and saw an opening for better uber-music destinations in a landscape that had few good ones.  So on the side, I started building music sites I would use. RockOnTV, MusicNewsWire and MusicStation, just to name a few. </p>
<p>I got lucky and five years later sold my company to MTV Networks. All those sites were rolled into SonicNet.com, the biggest music site around at the time. Now all defunct!</p>
<p>All of a sudden, I had some money.</p>
<p>What did I do first?</p>
<p>While in my lawyer&#8217;s office I made a copy of the check. Then I found what I thought to be the mailing address of the principal that kicked me out of school before my senior year. I wrote &#8220;F*CK YOU&#8221; on the check and mailed it. I don&#8217;t know if she ever got it. But 11 years after high school graduation, I finally had some closure. Yes, I held a grudge, but now I was over it. It&#8217;s a long story of trust, betrayal, power gone mad, evils of authority and not for this post. :-) She represented all the people that didn&#8217;t believe in me. Deep breath and now back to the story &#8230;</p>
<p>The money. What did I do with the money?</p>
<p>Two things I remember vividly.</p>
<p>First, I called my mom up and said something like this:</p>
<p>Me: It&#8217;s done. I just sold the company to MTV.</p>
<p>Mom: Oh, my god! Oh, my god! I&#8217;m so proud of you!</p>
<p>Me: Bring every bill, everything you owe over to my place tonight. We&#8217;re gonna write some checks.</p>
<p>Mom: Are you serious? (SCREAMING)</p>
<p>Me: Yes, see you later.</p>
<p>So, Mom did just that. And for about an hour that night we wrote checks for credit card bills, rent, school, personal loans &#8230; you name it.</p>
<p>Buying things is certainly a lot of fun. Travel, cars, all that big pimpin&#8217; stuff. But at the end of the day, if you can help or give back to those that did the same for you &#8230; well, that rocks. It&#8217;s a great feeling. More importantly, my mom was directly responsible for my product chops. When I was about 3 years old, she bought me a huge box of building blocks. Simple, made of wood, lots of shapes. There is no doubt in my mind that playing with those blocks shaped my creativity. They made me think about structure, balance, systems and more. She always made sure we had what we needed; she went without and worked hard to provide for us.</p>
<p>To this day, it&#8217;s the proudest moment of my life.</p>
<p>The second thing? Well, let me step back here &#8230;</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re an entrepreneur putting it all on the line, as least with me, I worked constantly. For five years. Eighteen-hour days. Getting out very little. Always thinking about work. Work, work, work. When you have one of these events, like selling, you can go a little crazy for a second. It&#8217;s not over, there is more to do to realize the dream. But it&#8217;s a moment where you get dizzy for a second. And I sort of reverted back to childhood for a few weeks. How so? I went on eBay and bought what I remember to be thousands of Matchbox cars. Why? Who the f*ck knows. I liked them when I was five years old. My mom used to buy me one a week. It was a good memory from simpler times. Now? I was a man-child with cash and clearly no idea what to do with it.</p>
<p>So, I&#8217;m sitting in my apartment and these boxes start coming in. I mean tons of them. Unopened collections of f*cking Matchbox cars. I opened one, took a deep breath and just started laughing. What the hell was I thinking? There was no way I was able to return these. My small apartment was filled with toy cars. What now?</p>
<p>I went out to get something to eat a few days later and I noticed the lobby of my building had these huge bins for a children&#8217;s toy drive. I turned around, got the wheely pushcart in the lobby and went back to my apartment. I loaded the boxes of cars up and within a few trips had given all of them away. Mostly unopened. In these digital times, needy kids probably thought &#8230; what moron is giving me a miniature car? I want Nintendo DS! </p>
<p>And so goes my few weeks of reverting to childhood nuttiness.</p>
<p>Yes, I ended up getting the car and the home. I&#8217;ve bought hundreds of pairs of sneakers that put Quincy Smith&#8217;s collection to shame. I&#8217;ve traveled to all sorts of great places. I love buying stuff for my nieces and nephew. I&#8217;ve pretended to be an angel investor. &#8230; And yes, of course, I&#8217;ve donated to causes (I&#8217;m not totally selfish), mostly having to do with education (see www.cfy.org). But these are the two things I remember most.</p>

<p>Ms. McGrath, who began her MTV career 30 years ago as a copywriter in its promotions department, and has been CEO since 2004, will step down immediately. The company will not name a successor.</p>
<p>People close to Viacom and Ms. McGrath, 58 years old, say that she chose to resign and wasn&#8217;t forced out. As recently as last week, she had not decided whether to leave, one of those people said.</p>

<p>While Facebook should not be expecting big bouquets of love from its partner and investor Microsoft, at least it&#8217;s not going to be getting <a href="https://kara.allthingsd.com/20110302/exclusive-microsoft-mulls-legally-poking-facebook-over-ad-talent-raid">legal brickbats</a> either.</p>
<p>According to sources close to the situation, the pair have settled a dispute over the Silicon Valley social networking site&#8217;s talent raid of Microsoft&#8217;s head of global ad sales, Carolyn Everson, for a similar job at Facebook.</p>
<p>In fact, Everson has already been at work for a week, sources said, after she agreed not to solicit a small group of advertising clients for a short period of time.</p>
<p>She is also barred from using any strategic information in her new Facebook job that she obtained while at Microsoft, sources said.</p>
<p>This kind of agreement is not uncommon in disputed job shifts and is also a far cry from a more stringent legal outcome, which might have benched her completely for some time.</p>

In that time, she had become a high-profile presence at internal and external Microsoft events.</p>
<p>So, it&#8217;s clear the Everson hiring infuriated Microsoft execs, especially since the company regards Facebook as a close partner. Microsoft is a longtime investor too.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re no longer angry,&#8221; said one source at Microsoft, about the cooling of tensions, &#8220;as much as disappointed.&#8221;</p>
<p>But key in the weighing of options at Microsoft is the obvious importance of keeping up good relations with Facebook. It is an important partnership, especially for its Bing search business, especially as an advantage over Google.</p>

<p>Think again.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3408" title="groupcommerce_logo" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/groupcommerce_logo-275x86.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="86" />New York-based <a href="http://groupcommerce.com/">Group Commerce</a>, which is coming out of stealth today, has the funding and the pedigree to be a viable contender.</p>
<p>Founded by former Google and DoubleClick executives David Rosenblatt, Jonty Kelt, and Andrew Glenn, has raised $8 million in capital.</p>
<p>Investors include: Spark Capital, Carmel Ventures, Lerer Media Ventures, and Bob Pittman, the founder of MTV Networks and now chairman of media and entertainment platforms at Clear Channel.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s more, it is coming out of the gate running with four major publishers added to its platform: DailyCandy, Meredith Corporation, Thrillist and The New York Times.</p>
<p>In an exclusive interview with eMoney, Rosenblatt and Kelt explain that unlike Groupon or LivingSocial, Group Commerce is not building its own consumer brand, and won&#8217;t be targeting deals directly at consumers. Rather, it&#8217;s banking on building a platform that other media companies can leverage.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt, who was the former CEO of DoubleClick, is the company&#8217;s chairman, Kelt is CEO, and Glenn is the company&#8217;s CTO. All three were at DoubleClick when it was acquired by Google for $3.1 billion</p>
<p>Ironically, they are now building a business that Google desperately wants to get into, but failed after an unsuccessful $6 billion bid to acquire Groupon.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt said:</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-3406" title="groupcommerce_davidrosenblatt" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/groupcommerce_davidrosenblatt.jpg" alt="" width="148" height="207" /> &#8220;Of course, this is going to be a very big market, and there will be many more players than just two. Each participant will have a different approach. Google clearly has one, but we believe collectively that publishers have the strongest advantage. They have the audience and the brand loyalty, but they are missing the mechanics and industry expertise.&#8221;</p>
<p>The daily deals space is getting exceedingly crowded.</p>
<p>The market is expected to soar to as much as $3.9 billion in the next four years, and there&#8217;s roughly 200 players in the space, <a href="nearly 200 other players trying to get into the space, a">according to estimates by BIA/Kelsey</a>.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt compared the market to the early days of online advertising when AOL and Yahoo dominated.</p>
<p>&#8220;In the early days of the display market, a big share of the market was dominated by two players, but overtime advertising was redistributed to where the audience was. Groupon and LivingSocial have done a great job creating a market, and they will continue to be very large, but there will be a similar redistribution in favor of publishers,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Beyond Groupon and LivingSocial, which are considered the market leaders, there&#8217;s other companies attacking several niches, ranging from furniture to baby apparel, travel and families. There&#8217;s also companies that say they offer exactly what Group Commerce is describing&#8211;a white label solution for publishers&#8211;including Seattle-based Tippr and ReachLocal, which recently acquired DealOn.</p>
<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a huge number of Groupon clones,&#8221; Rosenblatt said. &#8220;The insight here is that none of those clones have established publishers, they don’t have brands or trusted relationships, or customer lists&#8230;.We don’t have a b2c business, but that is the case with most of the other white label providers. They also don’t have teams and our breadth of services.&#8221;</p>
<p>He says the three components that you must have in order to be successful in the space are: A loyal audience; great content and deals; and a technology platform.</p>
<p>&#8220;The publishers we&#8217;ve worked with for many years [at DoubleClick] are in the process of transitioning to a new digital economy,&#8221; Rosenblatt said. &#8220;They have an audience and the ability to match the audience to deals that are contextually relevant. Our role is to offer the third part.&#8221;</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-3407" title="groupcommerce_jontykelt" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/groupcommerce_jontykelt.jpg" alt="" width="148" height="207" />Group Commerce is not just offering a technology platform, but also is sourcing the deals for its media partners, and finding a large audience and wide range of demographics for the merchants across publications.</p>
<p>Daily deals typically offer discounts at restaurants or other services for as much as 50 to 70 percent off. The customer pays for the voucher up front and then redeems it later. Typically, the merchant only gets half of that cash, while the other half goes to Groupon or another provider. For the merchant it&#8217;s a new form of advertising, replacing traditional methods, like Yellow Pages or newspaper ads.</p>
<p>Group Commerce would not disclose its revenue splits, but said it is paid with a portion of gross revenue of each deal, and that it&#8217;s a shared risk model. &#8220;If the deals don’t work, we don’t get paid,&#8221; Kelt said.</p>
<p>Kelt added that they believe their model will work because it combines the publisher&#8217;s knowledge of the audience with the merchants. For instance, DailyCandy&#8217;s audience is young and female, and a reader may be interested in an offer for a ladies night out at an upscale restaurant.</p>
<p>Although a potential customer does not have necessarily have to be a publisher, Kelt notes. It can be anyone with an audience, including a celebrity with a large following on Twitter.</p>
<p>Today, Group Commerce has 35 employees in New York, Chicago, Florida, San Francisco and Los Angeles. It&#8217;s planning to grow to 100 employees by the end of the year with the majority being sales people.</p>

<p>Microsoft&#8211;furious over a recent talent grab of its top advertising exec by Facebook&#8211;has been considering a wide range of options, including legal action to block the move, according to sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>Lawyer at both companies have been in back-and-forth talks in recent days after the hiring of Microsoft&#8217;s global ad sales head Carolyn Everson by the Silicon Valley social networking powerhouse to be its VP of global sales.</p>
<p>Among the more likely solutions being discussed: Barring Everson&#8211;a longtime ad sales exec who came to Microsoft from MTV Networks&#8211;from using any strategic information she learned at the company and also from contacting certain ad clients on behalf of Facebook for a certain period of time.</p>
<p>While a legal action to stop her from actually taking the position is the most serious option, it is certainly not without precedent for Microsoft. The company recently <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110223/judge-says-former-microsoft-exec-cant-work-for-salesforce-for-now/">got a temporary restraining order</a> to block one of its top government relations execs, Matt Miszewski, from working at Salesforce.com, pointing to non-compete and confidentiality contracts.</p>
<p>Whatever happens, it is clear the Everson hiring has infuriated Microsoft execs, especially CEO Steve Ballmer, since the company regards Facebook as a close partner. Microsoft is also a longtime investor in Facebook.</p>
<p>While considering a temporary restraining order against Everson in this kind of situation&#8211;since it is essentially the same job&#8211;is standard operating procedure for any company, several sources said tensions are higher than usual.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is just tone deaf on Facebook&#8217;s part not to think this would not be a problem,&#8221; said one person.</p>
<p>One particularly irksome aspect&#8211;top Facebook execs did not call Ballmer before news of the appointment leaked out to assuage the situation.</p>
<p>Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg did release a statement when <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110215/exclusive-facebook-grabs-microsoft-ad-head-everson">BoomTown broke news of the move</a> in mid-February, in an attempt to make nice.</p>
<p>&#8220;Microsoft was one of our earliest partners and is still one of our most valued,&#8221; she said, in part. &#8220;We look forward to continuing to expand our relationship with them.&#8221;</p>
<p>Her dulcet words have apparently not worked.</p>

<p>In fact, the talent raid came as a surprise to many at Microsoft, especially since Everson (pictured here) had been hired in June after a long search and had become a high-profile presence at internal and external Microsoft events.</p>
<p>That included organizing the splashy &#8220;Imagine 2011, Microsoft Advertising&#8217;s Marketing Leadership Summit.&#8221; The event is set to take place at the end of March at the software giant&#8217;s Redmond, Wa. HQ and will include an evening concert by the band Train.</p>
<p>Now she will be doing such things for Facebook, where Everson will be replacing longtime and well-regarded ad exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101026/exclusive-facebooks-longtime-ad-sales-head-mike-murphy-to-depart-company/">Mike Murphy</a>, who left the Palo Alto, Calif., company last fall. She will report to former Googler David Fischer, VP of Advertising and Global Operations.</p>
<p>Having a top exec who is amenable to and well known by Madison Avenue is key for Facebook as it ramps up its business, in anticipation of an IPO next year.</p>
<p>Despite being private, Facebook has recently been valued at between $50 and $60 billion by investors, who have been eagerly buying up shares of the company on secondary markets.</p>
<p>Under Murphy and Fischer, ad sales have been doing well already. Facebook&#8217;s share of online display advertising has more than quadrupled, from about three percent to almost 14 percent of the nearly $9 billion U.S. market, according to a recent survey.</p>
<p>In growing so quickly, Facebook has grabbed ad revenue&#8211;reportedly $2 billion last year–from old online powerhouses, especially Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL, and is also in a big fight with Google over premium ad sales.</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s surging usage and engagement are the reasons for the increased interest from advertisers, as well as its global growth in both market share and mindshare of consumers.</p>
<p>The opportunity at Facebook is clearly a big&#8211;and probably irresistible&#8211;move for the dynamic Everson, who has mostly worked in the mainstream media for much of her career.</p>
<p>Still, while movement of execs among top tech companies is not uncommon, there has been a lot less from Microsoft to Facebook.</p>
<p>Instead, Facebook has been most aggressive in its efforts to attract talent from Google.</p>

<p>No longer. In fact, the week before Facebook grabbed Everson, it also hired an up-and-coming exec, <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/chris-daniels/0/a2/17a">Chris Daniels</a>, GM of Bing Mobile Product Management, to be its director of business development.</p>
<p>Still, there is some hiring war history between the companies. In late 2008, Microsoft&#8217;s Ballmer managed to <a href="https://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/microsoft-confirms-qi-lu-hired-as-digital-chief-mcandrews-out">lure former Yahoo exec Qi Lu</a> to run its Online Services Division, several sources at both companies said, after he had told Facebook he would work there as its engineering lead. Lu had also been heavily recruited by Google.</p>
<p>Eventually, that was water under the bridge, which is what Facebook is hoping will happen with Microsoft over Everson.</p>

<p>Apparently, it&#8217;s not only in Google&#8217;s pond where Facebook fishes for talent&#8211;the social networking giant has recruited Microsoft&#8217;s global advertising head Carolyn Everson as one of its top sales execs.</p>
<p>A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the hiring, after a query this afternoon by BoomTown. Everson will be VP of Global Sales at the Silicon Valley company, although is likely to be located in New York.</p>
<p>The move will surely cause some tensions with the software giant, which is both a prominent partner of and investor in Facebook, especially since Everson was only <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100603/microsoft-u-s-ad-sales-vp-domeniconi-to-depart-while-exec-from-mtv-arrives-to-run-global-online-sales">hired at Microsoft last June</a> after a long search.</p>
<p>Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg addressed that issue in a statement:</p>
<p>&#8220;Microsoft was one of our earliest partners and is still one of our most valued. We have a long and strong relationship that includes search ads on our site, a social layer on Bing search results and a deep and popular integration with Xbox. They are a leader when it comes to unlocking the power of social for their already popular products and services. We look forward to continuing to expand our relationship with them.&#8221;</p>
<p>A Microsoft spokesman declined to comment.</p>
<p>Despite the possible awkwardness between Facebook and Microsoft&#8211;<em>hey, we stole your top sales exec, but you rock!</em>&#8211;the move to Facebook is a big opportunity for Everson.</p>
<p>But, according to sources, the former MTV Networks ad exec had become frustrated by the intense focus on pushing traffic to Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search service from its MSN portal at the expense of premium ad sales.</p>
<p>In addition, with the massive search and advertising partnership between Microsoft and Yahoo now in place, Everson was also not able to offer search advertising from Microsoft to marketers in packages. Yahoo is now in charge of that offering.</p>
<p>Everson will essentially be replacing longtime and well-regarded Facebook ad exec Mike Murphy, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101026/exclusive-facebooks-longtime-ad-sales-head-mike-murphy-to-depart-company">left the Palo Alto, Calif., company</a> last fall. She will report to former Googler David Fischer, VP of Advertising and Global Operations.</p>
<p>But it was COO Sheryl Sandberg, said sources, who was most focused on Everson. In fact, she just &#8220;friended&#8221; Everson on Facebook this week, as did another top ad exec, Tom Arrix.</p>
<p>Having a top exec who is amenable to and well known by Madison Avenue is key for Facebook as it ramps up its business, in anticipation of an IPO next year.</p>
<p>Despite being private, Facebook has recently been valued at between $50 and $60 billion by investors, who have been eagerly buying up shares of the company on secondary markets.</p>
<p>Under Murphy and Fischer, ad sales have been doing well already. Facebook&#8217;s share of online display advertising has more than quadrupled, from about three percent to almost 14 percent of the nearly $9 billion U.S. market, according to a recent survey.</p>
<p>In growing so quickly, Facebook has grabbed ad revenue&#8211;reportedly $2 billion last year&#8211;from old online powerhouses, especially Yahoo and AOL, and is also in a big fight with Google over premium ad sales.</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s surging usage and engagement are the reasons for the increased interest from advertisers, as well as its global growth in both market share and mindshare of consumers.</p>
<p>Thus, the search for a Murphy replacement was far-ranging, and included interest in a number of prominent ad execs from traditional media giants and also ad agencies.</p>
<p>The appointment is a big move for the dynamic Everson, who has mostly worked in the mainstream media for much of her career.</p>
<p>Everson came to Microsoft from a job as EVP of Strategy and Operations for the MTV Networks U.S. ad sales department.</p>
<p>Interestingly, she was also on the short list of candidates Yahoo was once perusing to fill the key U.S. ad sales job after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">Joanne Bradford departed </a> for Demand Media.</p>

News Corp. has tapped <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/profile?authType=name&amp;key=107734&amp;viewProfile=&amp;locale=en_US&amp;authToken=O1AZ">Greg Clayman</a>, who runs digital distribution for Viacom (VIA), to run the new publication&#8217;s business operations, multiple sources tell me.</p>
<p>For some reason, News Corp. (NWS) people (who also own this site), don&#8217;t like to use the word &#8220;newspaper&#8221; to describe their plans for the news&#8230;thing. But as <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/8ad41526-9b66-11df-8239-00144feab49a.html">earlier</a> <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2010/aug/13/business/la-fi-ct-newscorp-20100813">reports</a> have detailed, the idea is to create a subscription-based digital news service, designed expressly for mobile platforms like Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPad and Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android phones and upcoming tablets.</p>
<p>New York Post Executive Editor Jesse Angelo will oversee the service&#8217;s editorial role. And if you <em>did</em> call this thing a newspaper, you could call Clayman the publisher.</p>
<p>For now, Clayman&#8217;s old job will be handled by a group of his deputies, Viacom said in an internal memo announcing Clayman&#8217;s departure (but not his destination) last week. Jeremiah Zinn will continue to oversee product development, but will now also run the company&#8217;s mobile business; Jim Eadie is running mobile and app distribution deals. Tom Gorke will run online distribution deals.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve asked Clayman and News Corp. PR reps for comment. If I hear back from them, I&#8217;ll update here.</p>

<p>Every big media company is enamored with social games these days, in part because users seem to be&#8211;see Zynga&#8211;and in part because investors seem to be&#8211; see Zynga. Not coincidentally, Social Express is staffed with vets from Zynga, the dominant social game company <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100625/how-to-win-at-farmville-bob-pittmans-pilot-group-sells-zynga-shares/">now valued in the billions</a>.</p>
<p>Wait a minute. Doesn&#8217;t Viacom (VIA) have a slew of gaming assets, acquired during the last Web boom? It does! And those help generate 22 million unique visitors a month, says comScore (SCOR). But the first Viacom/Social Express games will show up this fall, so we&#8217;ll see what Sumner Redstone got for his money.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s been almost four months since <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">Joanne Bradford stepped down</a> as head of U.S. revenue and market development for Yahoo and the company has yet to hire a new exec to fill the key job.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s got a lot of people inside Yahoo (YHOO) a little jumpy, according to numerous sources who have contacted me recently, because of the importance of firm leadership in the premium display online ad business in which the Internet giant needs to keep excelling.</p>
<p>U.S. head Hilary Schneider has been leading the search for a replacement for Bradford, using star headhunter Jim Citrin of Spencer Stuart.</p>
<p>But she&#8217;s reportedly been unable to land the kind of prominent name Yahoo has been seeking for the job, after trying to attract several well-known candidates and rejecting others.</p>
<p>Microsoft (MSFT) recently hired an exec Yahoo had considered&#8211;former MTV Networks ad exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100603/microsoft-u-s-ad-sales-vp-domeniconi-to-depart-while-exec-from-mtv-arrives-to-run-global-online-sales">Carolyn Everson</a>, who is likely to be announcing a new sales structure there soon&#8211;for its head of U.S. online ad sales.</p>
<p>With Everson and others not panning out, one hope was that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100524/peachy-keane-will-yahoo-hold-onto-associated-content-ceo/">Patrick Keane</a>, CEO of Associated Content, which Yahoo just acquired, would take the job. But sources said he has thus far declined the offer.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s why, sources said, Yahoo is back to eyeballing internal candidates again, especially 11-year Yahoo veteran Mitch Spolan, VP of North American field sales, and Mollie Spilman, Yahoo&#8217;s SVP of B2B marketing and also its packaging group.</p>
<p>Another Yahoo exec who had been in the running: Seth Dallaire, a former Microsoft exec whom Bradford brought to the company last fall as VP of mid-market sales, a newly-created role responsible for all mid-market sales efforts across search and display advertising.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll see how it turns out, but as Yahoo just closed its second quarter, it will be important to get some clarity around its most important business in its most important market, especially as its stock continues its lackluster performance.</p>
<p>To help goose its shares, Yahoo announced a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100630/as-its-stock-languishes-yahoo-does-a-buyback-to-juice-shares/">$3 billion stock buyback plan</a> last week.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/angela-courtin/3/201/a51">Courtin</a> is well-liked internally and has a good repuation externally. She came to MySpace in mid-2008 from MTV Networks, which is owned by Viacom (VIA).</p>
<p>It is not clear if Courtin has another position elsewhere lined up. A source close to MySpace said the company is close to finding a replacement for her.</p>
<p>MySpace declined to comment.</p>
<p>To be fair, it&#8217;s not all departures from MySpace. This week, Manu Rekhi was hired as the new GM of MySpace Games and Developer Platform.</p>
<p>In this new role, MySpace said, &#8220;he will collaborate with product management, user experience and engineering to develop the strategic vision for the Games and Developer Platform, and to deliver world class products for MySpace users and developers alike.&#8221; Rekhi previously worked at Google (GOOG) and Lolapps.</p>

<p>Andrus&#8211;who mostly worked at MySpace under the tenure of co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe and President and co-founder Tom Anderson&#8211;left the troubled social networking site last year.</p>
<p>He had been doing some consulting for Rhapsody and had considered working there too. After deciding against it, since he lives in the Los Angeles area, he said he was asked to join the board.</p>
<p>&#8220;I liked what I saw,&#8221; said Andrus in an interview with BoomTown. &#8220;Rhapsody is really ready to blossom and poised for some real growth.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Seattle-based Rhapsody <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100209/viacom-real-networks-spin-off-rhapsody-music-service">spun off from RealNetworks earlier this month</a> and has plunged into efforts to expand its offerings and become profitable.</p>
<p>These include a price cut for its subscription to $9.99 from $15 and aggressive mobile efforts, such as a Wi-Fi app for Google (GOOG) Android smartphones.</p>
<p>RealNetworks owned 51 percent of the Rhapsody, and Viacom&#8217;s MTV Networks the remainder. Restructuring gave both companies a 47.5 percent share. The rest is<br />
allocated to the employee pool and outside investors, including Universal Music Group.</p>

<p>For a new company, Rhapsody is one of the oldest in the music space, founded in 2001 by Listen.com.</p>
<p>Listen.com was bought by RealNetworks in 2003, and Rhapsody became its flagship brand as a music service offering.</p>
<p>But Rhapsody quickly lost ground to savvier competitors like Apple (AAPL) and its innovative iTunes service.</p>
<p>Rhapsody, along with Best Buy&#8217;s (BBY) Napster, has sold music via monthly subscription, as opposed to Apple’s (AAPL) a la carte download offering.</p>
<p>But Rhapsody has not been able to gain much traction, despite years of effort.</p>
<p>RealNetworks and Viacom&#8217;s MTV created a joint venture in 2007 to try to goose it, which did not work either, before the recent formation of the privately held independent company.</p>
<p> Currently, hotter services, such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090922/is-spotify-spot-on-co-founder-daniel-ek-talks-about-the-hot-online-music-start-up">Spotify</a>, are getting more attention, but Andrus said Rhapsody can compete.</p>
<p>&#8220;The company has been through the storm and is ready to win,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve heard anecdotal reports from media types who are lukewarm about the forthcoming HP (HPQ) tablet. But here&#8217;s a rave mini-review for Dell&#8217;s (DELL) <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/dell-streak-leaked-internal-documents/#2786117">Streak</a> from <a href="http://twitter.com/gregclayman">Greg Clayman</a>, who runs digital for Viacom&#8217;s (VIA) MTV Networks:</p>

<p>All the important caveats: Clayman&#8217;s thumbs-up isn&#8217;t an official Viacom endorsement. And even if everyone at Viacom loves the thing, it doesn&#8217;t mean the cable programmer is going to let you <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100402/free-tv-on-the-ipad-lots-of-lost-but-no-csi-simpsons-or-30-rock/">watch lots of its shows for free</a> on the thing. In fact, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100406/want-to-watch-tv-on-your-ipad-pay-up/">it probably won&#8217;t</a>. And past performance does not guarantee future results, and objects in mirror are closer than they appear, etc., etc.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Another fun (but admittedly <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100318/youtube-and-viacom-find-lots-of-emails-but-no-smoking-gun/">irrelevant</a>) nugget from the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100318/viacom-youtube-make-their-case-read-their-secret-papers-here/">YouTube-Viacom documents</a>: Tom Dooley, Viacom&#8217;s No. 2, advising CEO Philippe Dauman on the best way to negotiate with Google, via a November 2006 email. Guide to players follows:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>I think we should cut off the heads of Adam, Michael (and perhaps Judy) and send them to Eric in a box wrapped in a printed copy of their latest term sheet. With a note that says &#8220;Before you respond&#8211;Remember our heritage&#8211;we are the people that brought you the Godfather.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Dooley is referring to Adam Cahan, who was then an MTV Networks executive vice president; Michael Wolf, then MTVN&#8217;s COO; and Judy McGrath, who remains MTVN&#8217;s CEO. (And Google CEO Eric Schmidt, of course).</p>
<p>Yes, Dooley&#8217;s joking. I think he&#8217;s also confusing Jack Woltz with Luca Brasi, but whatever. He&#8217;s an MBA, not a cineaste.</p>
<p>But YouTube was a big deal for Viacom (VIA). Here&#8217;s MTV president Van Toffler in October 2006, when told that Google (GOOG) was about to buy YouTube and that MTV was making a last-ditch effort to muck up that deal: &#8220;He fuckin better&#8211;that&#8217;s an epic transaction that could harsh our collective buzz.&#8221;</p>
<p>Buzz harshed, Viacom tried negotiating an advertising deal with Google for about six months following the YouTube acquisition. And the breakdown of those talks is what lead to the lawsuit we&#8217;re looking at now.</p>
<p>Alas, I can&#8217;t find the actual &#8220;Godfather&#8221; clip on YouTube, which isn&#8217;t a surprise. But you can find plenty of homages:</p>

<p>First, CBS (CBS) digital dealmaker Quincy Smith and crew formally unveiled Code Advisors, the M&amp;A shop they&#8217;ve been <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090511/cbs-digital-boss-quincy-smith-plans-his-next-deal-his-own-ma-shop/">assembling</a> for <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091028/exclusive-cbs-digital-ceo-smith-to-leave-to-start-a-silicon-valley-advisory-firm-first-customer-cbs/">nearly</a> a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091209/fred-davis-joins-cbs-quincy-smith-at-silicon-valley-boutique-bank-venture/">year</a>. Now comes Michael Wolf, last seen in the halls of MTV Networks, where he was COO for a bit more than a year.</p>
<p>That was all the way back in 2007, but Wolf&#8217;s contract with Viacom (VIA) kept him more or less tied up until 2010. Now he&#8217;s opening up his own shop: Activate, a boutique media and tech consulting firm.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a return to form for Wolf, who made his reputation as a tech-savvy media consultant at both Booz Allen and McKinsey (for a time capsule that&#8217;s also 100 percent up to date, see <a href="http://www.kurtandersen.com/journalism/nyker/nyker112999drentertainment.html">Kurt Andersen&#8217;s 1997 New Yorker profile</a> of Wolf). He says he&#8217;s self-funding the operation, and won&#8217;t need to take on investors, as he already has paying clients (whom he won&#8217;t name).</p>
<p>He also has a co-worker: <a href="http://dashes.com/anil/">Anil Dash</a>, the longtime veteran of blogging software pioneer Six Apart, who is now a director at <a href="http://expertlabs.org/">Expert Labs</a>. <p>Owen Van Natta, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090422/former-facebook-exec-van-natta-set-to-take-over-at-myspace-as-founder-dewolfe-steps-down/">prominent Internet executive brought in to overhaul MySpace</a>, has left after less than a year.</p>
<p>News Corp. (NWS), which owns the social network, has replaced the CEO with his former lieutenants, Mike Jones and Jason Hirschhorn, who have been named co-presidents.</p>
<p>It is Van Natta&#8217;s second consecutive short-tenured job. Prior to MySpace, he ran music start-up Project Playlist, where he stayed for less than six months. Van Natta built his reputation at Facebook and Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>A  press release spins this as a mutual decision between Van Natta and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090327/jon-miller-to-news-corp-as-digital-head/">Jon Miller, the News Corp. executive who joined the company less than a year ago himself</a> to run digital operations. But that&#8217;s going to be a difficult story to sell.</p>
<p>For starters, it&#8217;s clear that attempts to turn the social network around are taking much longer than expected, as <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100202/news-corp-beats-earnings-revenue-estimates/">News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch</a> acknowledged last week during the company&#8217;s earnings call.</p>
<p>Last fall, News Corp. disclosed that MySpace and the rest of the company&#8217;s digital portfolio were coming up short on their end of a $900 million, three-year search deal with Google (GOOG), which meant <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091104/myspaces-work-in-progress-losing-money-traffic-blowing-google-guarantees/">News Corp. would receive around $100 million less than originally anticipated</a>.</p>
<p>That may be in part because of changes the new MySpace leadership made to the site&#8217;s design, which cut down on some of the page views the old site created. But the shortfall was primarily because the MySpace audience has been migrating to other sites, particularly Facebook, for some time.</p>
<p>MySpace executives have been overhauling the site, mainly under the hood, and rolling out a series of incremental changes in recent weeks. These changes aren&#8217;t supposed to win back Facebook users&#8211;the company has declared that it&#8217;s no longer trying to compete with that site as a social network anymore&#8211;but are designed to help it hang on to existing users and establish itself as some sort of entertainment hub.</p>
<p>A tough task under any circumstance. But tensions in the corporate suite didn&#8217;t make it easier. Miller hired Van Natta, but the CEO didn&#8217;t bring in the two executives directly beneath him; both Jones and Hirschhorn were hired by Miller (along with Murdoch, who signed off on both men).</p>
<p>People who have talked to Van Natta say he has been relatively public about his frustrations at the job in recent weeks. Describing Jones and Hirschhorn as happy campers would be a stretch, too.</p>
<p>But whatever finally prompted the move seems to have come relatively quickly: The MySpace and News Corp. insiders I&#8217;ve talked to so far seem taken aback by Van Natta&#8217;s departure.</p>

<p>&#8220;Owen took on an incredible challenge in working to refocus and revitalize MySpace, and the business has shown very positive signs recently as a result of his dedicated work,&#8221; said Jon Miller, News Corporation’s Chairman and CEO of Digital Media. &#8220;However, in talking to Owen about his priorities both personally and professionally going forward, we both agreed that it was best for him to step down at this time. I want to thank Owen for all of his efforts.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mr. Miller continued, &#8220;Mike and Jason have demonstrated true leadership in their operational and product guidance, respectively, and I have the utmost confidence in both of them to lead MySpace into its next chapter.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a joint statement, Mr. Jones and Mr. Hirschhorn noted:</p>
<p>“We joined MySpace last April with very a specific set of goals in mind, and are anxious to continue working together to make those goals a reality. This business is now pointed in the right direction, and we have a great team of employees that will continue to push MySpace closer to its potential as the place where people go to be discovered and to discover great content.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mr. Van Natta commented:</p>
<p>&#8220;MySpace is an incredibly unique place and we&#8217;ve made real gains in terms of product focus and user experience.  I’m proud of the work we’ve all accomplished together and look forward to watching its continued growth.&#8221;</p>
<p>Prior to his role as MySpace COO, Mr. Jones founded and operated several online businesses, including Userplane, a leading provider of tools for online communities such as MySpace. Userplane was acquired in 2006 by AOL, where Jones subsequently served as a senior vice president and focused on social media monetization and also pioneered the distribution of widgets and other technology to Web publishers. He also was founder and CEO of Tsavo Media, an online content and search network developing next-generation publishing platforms and technology services.</p>
<p>Since joining MySpace, Mr. Hirschhorn oversaw all aspects of product development, and previously has led both start-up and established online businesses. He was president of Sling Media, Inc.&#8217;s Entertainment Group, which created consumer-driven applications and services for the Slingbox device, and was chief digital officer at MTV Networks, where he oversaw the company&#8217;s digital media businesses, products and strategies. <h4 class="subhed">Five Stats You Won&#8217;t Find in His Facebook Profile:</h4>
<p><strong>Worst Job</strong>: I worked one summer for the United States Postal Service, sorting mail at a post office in Bangor, Maine. Yeah, that was pretty bad. Basically, it was just endless piles of mail that you had to sort into different little holes. And you&#8217;d have, like, your timed break, 10 minutes every couple of hours or something. You&#8217;d deal with these unionized people who&#8217;d been working at the post office forever, who would smoke cigarettes and play cribbage during their 10 minutes and then back to sorting.</p>
<p><strong>Has a Geek Crush on</strong>: In the tech world, I&#8217;m a big fan of Alan Kay, both because he&#8217;s super geeky and super thoughtful.</p>
<p><strong>Gadget of the Moment</strong>: Well, when I was at Google, I worked a lot with early Android stuff, so I&#8217;m very intrigued by the Nexus One. I&#8217;d like to get my hands on one, but haven&#8217;t yet.</p>
<p><strong>What Do You Hope the Upcoming magic Apple (AAPL) Tablet Will Do?</strong>: Respond to my emails. Or at least delete some of them.</p>
<p><strong>Fails At</strong>: I&#8217;m a miserable snowboarder. That&#8217;s not a good answer though. My wife would say that I never seem to stop working.</p>

<h4 class="subhed">The Five Questions</h4>
<p class="question"><em>We&#8217;ve heard &#8220;It&#8217;s not just a Web site, it&#8217;s a platform&#8221; before. What is Facebook offering today that sets it apart? </em></p>
<p>The Facebook platform is actually very different than many platforms that have come in the past. The app platform is actually a lot more like standard platforms. It&#8217;s a development environment with lots of different UI elements you can integrate and build this experience. But really, what we&#8217;ve done with Facebook Connect is change Facebook platform to make it cross-platform.</p>

<p>Facebook platform is on Facebook.com, but it&#8217;s on lots of other Web sites: It&#8217;s on mobile devices; we&#8217;re pushing into gaming consoles. It&#8217;s less about a place you can build an application and more about features and functions you can add to any platform. We want to give users the tools and technology that allow them to connect with anything they care about, anywhere they are.</p>
<p class="question"><em>What industries haven&#8217;t caught on yet, or could be using social connection tools much better than they are today?</em></p>
<p>I&#8217;d point to two things. I think the media consumption space is changing very rapidly, like the TV industry is changing very rapidly. I mean, NBC is being sold not for NBC, but for all the cable assets in it. The printed news businesses is just being turned on its ear. I think there are some really great opportunities for layering in the social graph that could affect consumption habits. It can bring a different lens to what is news. Also, I&#8217;d love to be able to go to Pandora and see the stations my friends are listening to. I have some specific friends who are great at picking music. What we want to do with Facebook platform is tie those two together, so I can connect with that friend who always picks great music.</p>
<p>I think the DVR is a good example [of the possibilities]. I would like to be able to see what my friends are watching and interact with them based on that.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Yeah, let&#8217;s talk music for a second. I looked at your Facebook profile and saw all these bands and said to myself, &#8220;Either this guy has a music-savvy intern in his office who went to college in the 2000s and made this profile for him or he is a legit music fan.&#8221; Which is it? </em></p>
<p>I&#8217;m a <em>big</em> fan of music. A <em>huge</em> fan. I don&#8217;t really remember what&#8217;s on there. Probably Radiohead, the Decembrists, the Killers, maybe Sufjan Stevens. I like to stay current. I just bought a Sonos music player. I love having it all at my fingertips, with a little touchscreen.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Lots of big-time geeks have some strong memories of early experiences with technology. Do you have an &#8220;ah-ha&#8221; tech moment like that? </em></p>
<p>Yeah, sure, absolutely. So, when I went to college&#8211;this is a couple of decades ago now, pre-Web&#8211;my father, who worked at a university, gave me a 1200-baud modem when no one had modems. You&#8217;re probably going to read some deep-rooted psychology into this, but he was like, &#8220;This is how we&#8217;re going to communicate&#8211;we&#8217;re obviously not going to see each other and don&#8217;t expect me to talk on the phone with you. You should be sending me email.&#8221; And so, in 1990, I had this modem, and there wasn&#8217;t anything you could do with it except like log on to university computers.</p>

<p>There was Telnet and FTP. I didn&#8217;t need to go to the lab. I could log into Michigan&#8217;s computer from right here in my dorm room at two o&#8217;clock in the morning, which is what I tended to do. I&#8217;d log on and try to download some random shareware at two in the morning at 1200 baud, which basically meant leaving your computer on overnight, getting up in the morning, seeing that it had failed and trying again.</p>
<p class="question"><em>You&#8217;ve seen all kinds of arenas tap into the social space. What has been the sleeper hit for Facebook?</em></p>
<p>I&#8217;m gonna say the games. They didn&#8217;t catch us by surprise, but their size, success and the success of the gaming companies wasn&#8217;t something that we all saw coming. That was one that, in retrospect, makes a lot of sense, but wasn&#8217;t one that we all saw coming. Currently, I&#8217;m addicted to Bejeweled. It&#8217;s like crack on the iPhone, it&#8217;s 60 seconds long, and you&#8217;ll look at the score and realize that your mom has a higher score than you. Its not like FarmVille, where you can just say to yourself, &#8220;Well, she just has more time to farm.&#8221; It&#8217;s the same 60 seconds, so its just about how good you are.</p>

<p>In that transition, Current has cut shows and staff, with the most recent layoffs happening last week. The announcement has prompted questions about citizen journalism’s future, though Mark Rosenthal, Current’s CEO and a former president and operating chief at MTV Networks, said that it isn’t in doubt.</p>
<p>“Current’s mission has not changed one iota,” he said in an interview. “Citizen journalism is far from dead.”</p>
<p>The moves are among Current’s first big changes from Mr. Rosenthal, who helped take MTV from videos to reality and entertainment programming in the ’90s. And while he said the network is still committed to viewer-created content, the format still faces plenty of skepticism as a business model.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When MTV Networks’ Harmonix Music Systems developed the videogame The Beatles: Rock Band, it made many small changes to some of the most beloved songs in rock history. All of them were made in consultation with Apple Corps, the Beatles’ management company, but some of the changes have come as a shock for fans.</p>
<p>One that is causing a particular stir is a change in “Her Majesty,” the final song on the final album that the Beatles recorded. In the album “Abbey Road,” the song starts and ends with distinction: a surprisingly loud opening and an abrupt end. To many Beatles fans, the unresolved ending conveys special meaning, a sense that the iconic band’s music has no end to it.</p>
<p>Well, not anymore.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It’s early in the school year, but according to RateMyProfessors.com, students are already weighing in on the brains (and beauty) of their teachers.</p>
<p>The site lets college students rate their professors on such traits as easiness, helpfulness, clarity and “hotness,” and its popularity has prompted a slew of news articles quoting teachers maligned or flattered by their anonymous reviews. Last month, the New York Times’s (NYT) Ethicist column addressed an unnamed instructor who asked whether it’s appropriate to suggest that satisfied students post a rating to improve his profile.</p>
<p>“Universities have always done professor evaluations, but that information was kept private,” said Carlo DiMarco, vice president of university relations at MTV Networks, whose MTVu division bought RateMyProfessors in 2007. The site helps students “seek the wisdom of a much larger group,” he said, when figuring out which classes they should be taking, a process that used to happen via word-of-mouth with a handful of classmates.</p>

<p>Employees at MySpace have been waiting to find out who their <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091007/myspace-poised-to-hire-new-ad-sales-head-as-it-preps-music-and-entertainment-centric-strategy-and-redesign/?mod=ATD_sphere">new ad sales boss</a> will be, as <strong>All Things Digital</strong> reported earlier this week.</p>
<p>And here she is: Nada Stirratt, who until today was running digital sales for Viacom&#8217;s (VIA) MTV Networks. (You can read her goodbye memo to MTV colleagues below.)</p>
<p>It looks as if MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta is assembling a team of MTV veterans at his company, which he&#8217;s in the process of overhauling.</p>
<p>In addition to Stirratt, MySpace has brought former digital guru Jason Hirschhorn over as chief product officer. And Courtney Holt, who runs MySpace Music, had run digital music for MTV before Chris DeWolfe, Van Natta&#8217;s predecessor, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081105/myspace-music-ceo-debuting-tomorrow/">brought him on board last year</a>. Viacom hasn&#8217;t named a replacement for Stirratt.</p>
<p>Next week could be Stirratt&#8217;s debut in front of the entire advertising sales staff of MySpace, who are set to gather at a new seaside resort about 20 miles south of Los Angeles to get a first glimpse of the fresh direction the company is preparing to take under its new management.</p>
<p>The struggling social networking site, HQed in Beverly Hills, has been trying to reboot its image, spur innovation in its product and most of all, pull itself out of a too-long slump, even as longtime rival, Palo Alto, Calif.-based Facebook, has seen explosive growth.</p>
<p>In late August, MySpace sales and marketing head Jeff Berman left the company as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090820/myspace-to-hire-millard-and-also-media-link-to-take-over-ad-sales-whither-berman/">MySpace hired MediaLink</a>, a New York- and Los Angeles-based media consultancy, to help get its ad sales business back on track. </p>
<p>That effort has been led by <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090421/wenda-millard-out-at-martha-stewart/">MediaLink President Wenda Millard</a>, who is well known in the ad industry and was longtime leader of the ad sales force at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Getting an experienced top ad exec in place will round out a recent spate of new hiring by MySpace, including a new CTO, Alex Maghen, who moved over from its MySpace Music joint venture, and a new CFO, Mark Rosenbaum.</p>
<p>This has been part of Van Natta&#8217;s wholesale flushing out of most of the top execs who worked under DeWolfe.</p>
<p>Now, with a new team of execs, the News Corp. (NWS) property is putting the finishing touches on a master plan, which will include a new redesign of its hopelessly messy interface and doubling down on a product strategy that will center on, said one source, &#8220;what we own,&#8221; namely, music and entertainment.</p>
<p>Music is the obvious key leverage point, the still-bright spot of MySpace, followed by adding big entertainment categories like movies, television, gaming, video and other pop culture arenas.</p>
<p>Once the rejiggered product is in place, it will be up to Stirratt to sell it to advertisers.</p>

Here&#8217;s the guy who&#8217;s supposed to attract advertisers: <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/kohlconsulting">David Kohl</a>, a former Nokia (NOK) executive, who starts work today as the site&#8217;s sales boss.</p>
<p>Kohl&#8217;s job is a key one at the venture, whose premise is that the music industry can do a better job of selling its video inventory than sites like Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube. Vevo is a joint venture owned (for now) by <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090604/sony-joins-vevo-universals-hulu-for-music-videos/">Sony</a> (SNE) and Vivendi&#8217;s Universal Music Group; YouTube will help power the site and share in some of its revenue.</p>
<p>In theory, there could be a lot of dollars to go around. When Vevo opens its doors later this year, it is expected to generate some 450 million video streams a month. In theory, the fact that a single company controls the way the videos are displayed and distributed will make those streams more attractive to advertisers.</p>
<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/vevo-logo.png"><img class="size-medium wp-image-6164 alignleft" title="vevo-logo" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/04/vevo-logo-250x77.png" alt="vevo-logo" width="250" height="77" /></a>But there are plenty of skeptics who think the site will flounder, in large part because the music industry has never figured out how to run a successful consumer business and because media companies have a terrible track record when it comes to joint ventures. In Vevo&#8217;s favor: They said the same thing about Hulu, and that venture has been a success, at least operationally.</p>
<p>Kohl will run a six-person sales team he intends to expand, people familiar with Vevo&#8217;s strategy tell me. Until now, Vevo head <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090508/vevo-aka-youtube-music-gets-a-ceo-universal-digital-boss-rio-caraeff/">Rio Caraeff</a> has been overseeing sales himself&#8211;and learning on the job, since he didn&#8217;t have any sales experience of his own. Vevo now employs about 45 people.</p>
<p>At Nokia, Kohl ran the company&#8217;s interactive ad group; he has also put in time at Viacom&#8217;s (VIA) MTV Networks, Vivendi Universal and Comedy Central.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[MySpace has officially announced the appointment of entrepreneur and former AOL exec Mike Jones as COO, as BoomTown had reported earlier today.

But the social-networking site also named former Sling Media top exec Jason Hirschhorn as chief product officer in what has become a series of senior management moves at MySpace.

Both Hirschhorn and Jones will report to newly named CEO Owen Van Natta, the former COO of Facebook, who replaced MySpace CEO and co-founder Chris DeWolfe last week.

<p>MySpace has officially announced the appointment of entrepreneur and former AOL exec Mike Jones as COO, as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/back-to-school-new-myspace-ceo-van-natta-starts-today-and-joined-by-former-aol-exec-jones-as-coo/">BoomTown reported earlier today</a>.</p>
<p>But the social-networking site also named former Sling Media top exec Jason Hirschhorn as chief product officer in what has become a series of senior management moves at MySpace.</p>
<p>The paidContent Web site <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-industry-moves-userplane-founder-mike-jones-joins-myspace-as-coo/">first reported on the Hirschhorn appointment</a> earlier this morning.</p>
<p>Besides Sling, which he recently left in a mass departure of top execs, Hirschhorn was also the top digital exec at MTV Networks and was part of the team at Viacom (VIA) that unsuccessfully tried to buy MySpace many years ago.</p>
<p>Both Hirschhorn and Jones, who are already based in Los Angeles, will report to newly named CEO Owen Van Natta, the former COO of Facebook, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/van-natta-confirmed-as-ceo-of-myspace-the-full-press-release/">replaced MySpace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe last week</a>.</p>
<p>Recently installed News Corp. (NWS) digital head Jon Miller has put in place a trio of well-known Internet execs at the top of MySpace, which has seen its buzz and momentum wane in the face of the huge growth at Facebook.</p>
<p>MySpace&#8217;s motto is &#8220;A Place for Friends.&#8221; But it might very well now be: A place for wandering digital execs.</p>
<p>And expect more top execs to wander away from MySpace too. Once the trio get their bearings, many sources indicate that News Corp., the owner of MySpace, has given Van Natta and his key execs free rein to remake the unit.</p>
<p>There is a lot to fix at the entertainment-, music- and media-heavy site, from a renegotiation with Google (GOOG) over its advertising search deal to goosing traffic to innovating its look and feel.</p>
<p>In addition, MySpace is likely to forge closer tech ties with Silicon Valley, where Facebook is based.</p>
<p>News Corp. already noted that it was in talks with MySpace co-founder and President Tom Anderson about a new role in the company. Also likely to get a major look-see are top execs like sales head Jeff Berman and CTO Aber Whitcomb, as well as a number of others.</p>
<p>To begin, though, the trio will meet the staff of MySpace, more than 1,000 people, in an all-hands event to be held outside of its building in Beverly Hills, Calif., at about 3:30 p.m. today.</p>
<p>Sources tell me there is no space big enough at the HQ to accommodate them, so the courtyard of the building will be used.</p>
<p>BoomTown is in Los Angeles today, by coincidence, but will not be crashing the event, so send interesting tidbits my way.</p>

Previously, he was chief digital officer at MTV Networks, where he oversaw the company’s digital media businesses, products and strategies. Hirschhorn joined MTV Networks following the acquisition of his company, Mischief New Media, which provided interactive services to the entertainment industry.</p>
