Sprint is forking over millions to become the official wireless company of men's professional basketball. In addition to bragging rights, Sprint will also offer up a host of hoops content to its subscribers.

Sprint announced a deal Wednesday with the National Basketball Association that will give Sprint a whole bunch of hoops content and visibility and no doubt help the league pay for some of those games missed due to the just-settled labor dispute.

Sprint CEO Dan Hesse

Sprint and the league didn’t disclose the size of the deal, though I am told it is fair to say that it is “in the millions” of dollars. Sprint replaces T-Mobile USA, which had been the league’s partner from 2005 until the end of last season.

As part of the pact, Sprint will offer its subscribers a new Sprint NBA Mobile app that will offer in-game and post-game video highlights, radio broadcasts of every game (including home and away radio broadcasts) as well as the usual assortment of news, scores and stats. Sprint says the app should be ready for Android by the time the delayed season tips off later this month. An iPhone version should be available at some point, though it may not have the exact same features.

Sprint subscribers who want even more basketball can get a 20 percent discount on the NBA’s mobile “League Pass,” which offers up to 40 out-of-market games per week.

One of Microsoft’s top execs, Debra Chrapaty (pictured here), who heads its infrastructure business, is leaving the software giant to take a top job at Cisco (CSCO), sources said.

Chrapaty–whose title is corporate VP of Global Foundation Services–is also one of increasingly few top women tech execs at Microsoft (MSFT), where she has worked for seven years.

The job put her in charge of, as a Microsoft site notes, “strategy and delivery of the foundational platform for Microsoft Live, Cloud and Online Services worldwide including physical infrastructure, security, operational management, global delivery and environmental considerations. Her organization supports over 200 online services and web portals from Microsoft for consumers and businesses.”

In other words: A lot of plumbing.

She was featured onstage with other key execs at Microsoft’s Financial Analysts Meeting earlier this summer.

Sources said Chrapaty will now shift to products at Cisco, running the collaboration software group.

That unit’s former exec, Doug Dennerline, recently moved to Salesforce.com (CRM) to take a job as its EVP of sales for the Americas.

At Cisco, as had Dennerline, Chrapaty is likely to play a large role in forming the networking giant’s cloud computing and software-as-a-service strategies.

Chrapaty has worked at a lot of tech companies, including Organic, AllBusiness and Etrade Technologies. She was also CTO of the National Basketball Association.

In yet another appointment of an exec close to AOL Chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong, Patch Media CEO Jon Brod (pictured here) has taken over the new venture arm of the Time Warner (TWX) online unit.

AOL confirmed the appointment to BoomTown.

Patch is a hyperlocal community news site, in which Armstrong was the major investor. It was bought by AOL in June for just under $10 million.

Like recently installed AOL advertising head Jeff Levick, who worked with Armstrong at Google (GOOG), Brod has also known him for a long time.

He ran Patch for Armstrong and was president and COO of Polar Capital Group, Armstrong’s private investment company, which is focused on the media, technology and sports sectors.

Previous to that, Brod worked as an exec at InterActiveCorp (IACI) and even at the National Basketball Association.

Now Brod will helm AOL Ventures, a new unit of AOL that Armstrong created as part of a larger new strategy to invest in new things, and he will manage a portfolio of some of its more difficult recent acquisitions.

That means Brod will be figuring out what to do with AOL’s pricey purchase of its Bebo social networking site, as well as the Truveo video search unit, widgetmaker Userplane.

Sources close to the situation said AOL is bullish on Truveo (even though the previous management at AOL was poised to sell it), thinks Userplane’s once-promising prospects have dwindled due to neglect and will likely seek to sell Bebo.

But Brod will also be charged with investing in start-ups and also incubating.

“The Ventures group is about fostering innovation around the globe,” said Brod, in an interview with me. “And we’re going to create the Internet’s most entrpreneurial-friendly environment in order to accomplish this.”

The New York-based Patch is a platform that does deeply localized coverage of communities on a range of topics, from announcements to news to events to obituaries. It is aimed at competing with local newspapers and other media.

Mark Cuban has owned the Dallas Mavericks for more than nine years, and during that time he’s racked up more than $1.5 million in fines from the National Basketball Association for various transgressions. But he’s still finding ways to plow new ground.

The latest: A $25,000 bill from the league for two messages, totaling 49 words, that he posted via Twitter on Friday night. Both tweets complained about the officiating in that night’s Mavericks-Denver Nuggets game.

Cuban’s response? This tweet, posted Sunday afternoon: “just found out got fined25k by nba.) nice.” And then, upon further reflection, he penned this beauty:

Cuban is now wondering aloud, via Twitter (of course) and his blog whether his tweets ought to be considered copyrighted–that is, whether blogs and other publications need his permission to reproduce the stuff he posts. I don’t think so, obviously.

But for what it’s worth, I did check Twitter’s terms of service, and was a little surprised to see that the micro-blogging service doesn’t exert any claim on its users’ work. That’s a refreshing change of pace compared to Twitter’s Web 2.0 peers.
