Memo to the Vanderhook Clan: Stunt Casting Justin Timberlake Isn’t Going to Get Myspace’s SexyBack

Oh dear, oh my — with the first move that the new owners of Myspace have made, it’s pretty clear they are taking the worrisome look-at-the-shiny-celebrity approach. The trio of Vanderhook brothers who run Specific Media, which paid $35 million to buy the News Corp.-owned music-focused social networking site, began by swanning around the appealing singer and actor’s name as an investor. Maybe they should focus on making products the star first.

Dear Zuck: The Apple iPad Is Mobile (So Sorry!)

Because while those who live in the echo chamber of Silicon Valley are frequently wrong, but never in doubt, a gigantic amount of time is spent being more technical than realistic. BoomTown Talks Girl Geek at Facebook Hack Event

This Saturday, BoomTown gassed up the Mini and motored on down to Facebook’s newest building for a Developer Garage and Hackathon, which the social networking giant did in partnership with Girls in Tech. The goal was to focus on women developers, although there were plenty of dudes in attendance, as per usual at any all-night nerd-off. Facebook, feeling empowered, gave me the stage. Oops!

Viral Video: Facebook Live vs. Google Beat

While the Silicon Valley digital giants are fighting on much bigger playing fields, BoomTown is enjoying the mini-battle brewing between Facebook Live and Google Beat. What, pray tell, are those?

OAuth Sounds Geeky, but Protecting Passwords Is Worth It

Today at 8 am PT, Twitter will turn on OAuth for user authentication, which would seem like something only nerds should care about. In fact, everyone should. With third-party apps no longer given access to Twitter passwords, in this highly unprotected digital world, the consumer is a little bit more protected.

Here’s a trio of super-nerds at Nathan Myhrvold’s Intellectual Ventures in the Seattle area–Bellevue, Wash., actually–trying to best the efforts of Cisco intern Greg Justice, who imperiously dubbed himself “The World’s Most Interesting Intern.” And extra points for the lab coats!
