A few days ago, All Things Digital announced CNET senior writer Ina Fried was joining the staff to cover mobile for the site.

Today, we complete a one-two punch with the hiring of Liz Gannes, who will be covering the critical social beat.

She comes to us after an impressive stint as a senior writer from the terrific GigaOm Network.

Anyone who follows the development of Web 2.0 and the growing power of social networking–from powerhouse Facebook to the innovative stylings of Twitter to the explosive growth of Zynga–understands the importance of the social arena to the future of the Web.

That was underscored today with the unveiling of a new $250 million sFund by Kleiner Perkins, Facebook, Amazon and others.

Liz will be covering all this and more for us, which we expect her to do with the same kind of professionalism and insight she displayed in spades at GigaOm.

Liz, interestingly enough, was raised in Silicon Valley, and has been wise beyond her years, even as a high school student.

In fact, in an article in the New York Times in 2000 about the corrosive effect of the Web 1.0 culture on young people in the area–called the “affluenza syndrome”–the then-senior at Palo Alto High School said:

“It’s hard to ground ourselves sometimes….The things we hear on the news are happening all around us. We’re living on top of this bubble and we’re not able to see below us.”

We think Liz’s unique perspective will allow readers to see a lot.

After high school and college at Dartmouth, where she got a degree in linguistics, the daughter of a tech-reporter-turned-start-up-CEO–the amazing Stuart Gannes–started her career as a reporter for Red Herring in 2004.

In 2006, Liz founded NewTeeVee, a GigaOM site that is now the pre-eminent source for news and analysis about the intersection of entertainment and technology.

We are thrilled to have her join ATD, especially so since she is coming from a site we admire so much and, more importantly, because of her work for tech’s top-notch blogging pioneer, Om Malik.

And we think once Liz starts chronicling the social arena for us, our readers will have even more to admire in her work.

There are more job announcements to come soon, as ATD expands our coverage, so stay tuned.

This one's so obvious, the real surprise is that it hasn't been done before. If you're itching to buy your pal the latest work by Will Ferrell but want to see it right away yourself, this is the offer for you.

This one’s so obvious, the real surprise is that it hasn’t been done before. Amazon, which sells both DVDs and streaming movies over the Web, has packaged them together in a two-for-one deal: Buy the disc and you can watch the movie immediately on your PC.

Amazon (AMZN) gets a two-for-one out of this as well: The promotion will (the company hopes) goose disc sales, which are sputtering, while introducing shoppers to the company’s Web streaming offering, which most people don’t yet know about or use.

As NewTeeVee points out, the chief appeal to consumers here is likely for cheapskates who want to buy a disc for a friend but watch the movie themselves. Nothing wrong with that, methinks. But the problem is that Amazon doesn’t offer the option for that many movies–313, to be exact.

Still, if you’re planning on buying “Land of the Lost” for your pal, maybe as a prank, but are jonesing to see it yourself, maybe because you’re drunk, this is the option for you.

When Apple added a video camera to the iPhone last summer, the digerati declared that Flip, Cisco’s cheap digital video camera line, was dead. When Apple added a video camera to its cheap and tiny iPod nano last week, the digerati heaped dirt on the camcorder’s grave.

You know what? I think the conventional wisdom is right on this one. Take a look at this clever test from NewTeeVee, which compares the nano’s new camera with a Flip Ultra SD.

The good folks at NewTeeVee declare that the Flip’s camera offers a “MUCH better picture,” and since they did the work here I won’t argue with them.

But I don’t think the gap between the two cameras is big enough to help Flip. If you’re really serious about video quality, you’re probably not carrying a Flip to begin with. And given the choice between a video camera that takes a decent picture and one that also lets you listen to music, watch movies and play games…well, that’s a tough sell, even if you’ve got Cisco’s (CSCO) marketing dollars backing you up.

In other words, Apple (AAPL) has passed my “good enough” test. The nano doesn’t do the job as well as a single-use device, but it’s adequate for my needs. The only question for me is whether I spring for a nano now, or hold off in the hopes that the iPod touch line gets a camera sooner than later.

There is no shortage of places to watch TV shows free on the Web. There’s a glut of them, really. But here comes another: AT&T Entertainment.

What is it? A TV (and movie) portal that looks more or less like every other TV (and movie) portal on the Web: Hulu, TV.com, Sling.com, Fancast, etc.

The only reason for AT&T (T) to launch its own portal now would be as a placeholder until it launches its own “TV Everywhere” play, where subscribers to its “U-Verse” TV service would get Web access to cable shows. That’s the same strategy that Comcast (CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (TWC), Verizon (VZ) and everyone else in the pay TV business is trying.

But while AT&T will likely be doing the same, this site isn’t for that. At least, not according to the note AT&T sent to NewTeeVee, which makes it sound like the company is creating…another free Web TV portal:

We have started a soft launch of a new site called AT&T Entertainment. This site will feature free online content available to any consumer. We’re finalizing a few final elements, and we’ll share more details on our official launch soon.

Allrighty, then. As AT&T says, it’s a soft launch, so maybe when it’s ready for primetime, things will make more sense. But for now it’s a head-scratcher.

One thing that distinguishes AT&T’s site from, say, Hulu: Hulu lets you embed clips from the site on your blog, while AT&T’s site, which relies on Hulu for much of its content, doesn’t. So here’s an awesome, upsetting clip you can see on AT&T’s site, but can only embed by heading to Hulu. Makes sense, right?

Earlier this summer, Twitter was blamed for torpedoing movies like “Bruno” and “Funny Business.” Now the micromessaging service is being heralded for giving Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” a big boost.

The movie, an over-the-top retelling of World War II featuring a squad of Jewish Nazi hunters, brought in $37 million at the box office this weekend, which is about $10 million more than the Hollywood prognostication machine expected.

In the old days, you’d simply chalk up the difference to the fact that the Hollywood prognostication machine sometimes gets things wrong. But now when this happens, the impulse is to blame or praise Twitter. The theory: Audiences go to see the movie on Friday, then quickly tweet their 140-character reviews to their pals. This either keeps moviegoers away for the rest of the weekend or makes them flock to the theaters.

All of this sounds believable enough, but I have yet to see anyone spell out exactly how it works. The Hollywood Reporter, for instance, is a big proponent of the “Twitter saved Tarantino” theory. But its evidence is awfully weak: It just notes that some Twitter messages about the film have been positive.

At least NewTeeVee tries to put some numbers behind the argument. Using data from tracking service Trendrr, it notes that the volume of Tweets about the film increased over the weekend (see chart; click to enlarge).

Of course, volume alone doesn’t indicate anything: For all we know the messages were fixated on the mustache Brad Pitt’s character sports in the film. And in any case, we’re a long way from correlating Internet messages with real-world actions–just ask former presidential candidate Ron Paul’s ardent cyberfans.

But marketing always involves at least an equal part art for every part science, and when you add a superhyped, very new phenomenon like Twitter to the mix, all bets are off. Given the way these things work, expect Hollywood to assume that Twitter can now make or break a movie. And there will be an opportunistic flock of “social media” gurus ready to assure them–for just a small monthly retainer–that their insight is correct.

In case you haven’t seen it (left unmentioned in these reports is the fact that the movie got a very big conventional marketing push), here is an “Inglourious Basterds” trailer. And below that, one of my favorite scenes from “Pulp Fiction,” Tarantino’s 1994 breakthrough. (Be warned! These are Tarantino movies, and the second clip is unedited, which means you’re going to get some potentially NSFW cursing and gore. Enjoy!)

Here’s a pleasant, rare bit of media news sunshine: CBS says advertisers are still lining up to get into its March Madness webcast. The company expects to generate $30 million in Web ads from the college tournament this year, up 30 percent from 2008.

CBS (CBS) says it has locked up AT&T (T) Coke (KO) and General Motors’ (GM) Pontiac as “presenting sponsors.” And Comcast (CMCSA) is paying to associate itself with the Webcast’s “boss button,” which you’re supposed to hit if one of your remaining superiors waddles by your cube while you’re watching the Duke game.

Chris Albrecht at NewTeeVee thinks CBS will need to take some of that extra dough and plow it right back into bandwidth bills, since the company is using a high-end player from Microsoft (MSFT) to stream the games this year. I’m not so sure about that–last I looked, Microsoft was still trying to persuade companies to use its player instead of Adobe’s (ADBE) Flash, and I have to believe it’d be willing to make it worth CBS’s while to do so.

Was Barack Obama's presidential inauguration a big day for Web video? Yes. Was it a record day? No one knows. That's because Web video metrics, which are supposed to be much more precise than television's, are still pretty raw.

Was Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration a big day for Web video? Yes. Was it a record day? No one knows.

Credit NewTeeVee’s Liz Gannes for trying to get her arms around the size of the audience that watched Tuesday’s proceeding on the Web. She was able to tally 70 million views, and notes that U.S. TV outlets totaled about 37.8 million viewers.

So was the Web audience watching Obama twice as big as the TV one? Who knows?

That’s because as impressive as those numbers are, it’s unclear what they actually mean. Gannes herself notes that her data are weighed down with several asterisks.

For one thing, she doesn’t have numbers from sources like the New York Times (NYT), which says its Web site served up a record number of views but won’t actually say how many that means. On the flip side, the video numbers she does have come from throughout the day, while TV numbers only cover 11 a.m. through 2 p.m. EST. Etc.

But the biggest issue here is that it’s impossible to equate a Web video view with a television viewer. If you had to reload your Web browser because the video you were watching crashed or stalled, you generated an extra Web video view. Every time you did that. Same thing applies if you switched to a different site to watch its feed.

So given the well-documented troubles most Web sites had serving up video on Tuesday, it’s entirely possible that each Web user generated more than one video view. Say, a couple on Time Warner’s (TWX) CNN.com, and then a few more at GE’s (GE) MSNBC.com.

Which means the real question is: How many video views did the average viewer account for?

The Web sites that have reported traffic numbers could clear this up by explaining how many individual IP addresses they served during the inauguration. But for whatever reason, they’re not.

So we’re back to guesswork when it comes to figuring out the size of Tuesday’s Web audience. Ironic, given that the Web is supposed to offer a precision that old media just can’t match when it comes to this stuff. Maybe one day.

Perhaps the only blogger who would have had the exact right take on this somewhat silly Scobleicious day of data portability debates is Om Malik.

Unfortunately for us and mostly for him, he has been sidelined by a sudden heart attack he suffered over the holidays that landed him in the hospital (in fact, Om actually walked himself there, so that is a good sign). According to a blog post he made earlier in the day, that’s where he has been camped out now as he recovers and contemplates a life without fried foods and stress.

The latter might be a little hard for Om, who is probably the hardest-working man in the tech-blog business and on whom I egregiously patterned my own journey into the online-content medium.

Of course, I did, given that Om combines dogged reporting with analytical savvy and typically exacting standards he gleaned from a life in mainstream journalism. He is also a genuine character with an important definitive voice.

We all looked at Om as a real trailblazer when he struck out from the relative safety of a traditional magazine job to move into a still-nascent Internet space, a journey that continues to this day with his interesting expansion of the GigaOm brand into all sorts of related digital arenas like the excellent NewTeeVee and Earth2Tech.

Of course, Om is still the big show and he scooped everyone with the news about his illness in the typical pugnacious but sweet-natured style that I really admire.

“With the support of my family and my team, I am on the road to a full recovery. I am going to be OK,” he wrote. “Now living a healthier life isn’t just one of my New Year’s resolutions, it’s doctor’s orders. Friends and family have purged my apartment of smokes, scotch and all my favorite fatty foods–I am even going to be drinking decaf. I won’t be refashioning my avatar’s stogie with a celery stick, but I will be taking better care of my health.”

While I am glad the cigar is still there–unlit, Om, or else you have me to answer to and you know who will win that fight–please take care and get better soon. The tech Web is a lot less interesting without you.

I know you need a brief break from my relentless obsession with Yahoo, so here is an intro video I did on the fly for an event thrown by Om Malik’s NewTeeVee Web site last night on Pier 38 in San Francisco.

I will post more tomorrow on the event, which was part of a series of outdoor showings of online videos. This time the theme was “Citizen News,” and I and others had to judge a half-dozen videos culled from submissions.

Of course, I also had to submit a video intro about me, so this is what I made, complete with a tour of the AllThingsD.com Global HQ (in the cottage behind my house), with a special guest star, too!

Here you go:

That puts the valuation of the still-unnamed project at $1 billion.

Is it worth that much?

Hmm. Let me think. Hmm.

No.
