			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/03/levo-league.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-188095" title="levo league" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/03/levo-league-380x236.jpg" alt="" width="380" height="236" /></a>There are plenty of places on the Web to network, job-hunt and look for career advice. <a href="http://www.levoleague.com/signup/">Levo League</a>&rsquo;s pitch is that there aren&#8217;t many of those places that attract young professional women, and it wants to fix that.</p>
<p>The irony here is that Levo League&#8217;s co-founders are exactly the kind of women who don&#8217;t seem to need assistance from Web sites. Caroline Ghosn and Amanda Pouchot are well-educated, hyperambitious and plugged-in: They boast credentials like degrees from Berkeley and Stanford, jobs at McKinsey, and backing from the likes of Facebook&#8217;s Sheryl Sandberg, Ning&#8217;s Gina Bianchini, and Gilt Groupe&#8217;s Susan Lyne. (It doesn&#8217;t hurt that Ghosn&#8217;s father, Carlos, is the CEO of Nissan and Renault.)</p>
<p>Then again, it would be kind of hard to get people to visit your new career site if you couldn&#8217;t offer aspirational pixie dust. &#8220;Be a schlub, just like us&#8221; won&#8217;t cut it.</p>
<p>The pitch here is basic: The Web site is free for users, who have to apply for access (Ghosn and Pouchot do the vetting themselves, but that won&#8217;t last if the site grows they way they imagine). It offers a variety of forums, real-time chats with mentors, and old-fashioned job postings. Employers will pay for sponsorships and job postings.</p>
<p>Like all smart start-ups, Ghosn and Pouchot argue that they&#8217;re ready to take share away from an established heavyweight &#8212; LinkedIn, in this case &#8212; by offering something better. And like lots of start-ups, they have a messy backstory, which seems to involve a predecessor site and some unhappy former co-founders. (But if you can make sense of this <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/petercohan/2011/08/09/a-cautionary-tale-friendship-business-ethics-and-bad-breakups-acts-i-and-ii/">Forbes story</a> which attempts to explain it, good for you.)</p>
<p>In any case, the site should be up and running now, so you can check it out &#8212; once you make the cut. And you can see what Ghosn and Pouchot have to say for themselves in this interview:</p>

		<title>Gling? Glam Buys Ning for $200 Million, Mostly in Stock</title>

<p>Glam Media, a social content platform for sites primarily targeting women, said it&#8217;s buying Ning, the custom social-platform start-up co-founded by Marc Andreessen.</p>
<p>The purchase price wasn&#8217;t disclosed, but sources close to the deal said the sale price was $200 million, mostly in stock. Glam has been eyeing an initial public offering, so shares being part of the deal is not a surprise.</p>
<p>I had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/exclusive-ning-is-being-shopped-around-at-150m-price-tag/">reported in August</a> that Ning was on the block and had been talking to a number of companies, including Google and Groupon.</p>
<p>The sale price is well below previous loftier valuations for Ning, which topped $750 million several years ago. Its venture funders have put close to $120 million into the company since it was founded in 2004.</p>
<p>Among its key investors: Well-known entrepreneur and investor Andreessen, LinkedIn Chairman and Greylock Partners VC Reid Hoffman, Legg Mason, Allen &#038; Company and Lightspeed Venture Partners.</p>
<p>Ning will operate as a new business unit within Glam Media. Jason Rosenthal, Ning&#8217;s CEO, will join Glam as EVP Social Media and general manager of a Ning unit. In addition, Andreessen will join Glam&#8217;s board.</p>
<p>The sale comes after a rocky history for Ning, which bills itself on its site as &#8220;The World&#8217;s Largest Platform for Creating Social Websites.&#8221;</p>
<p>The sales effort grew out of a parallel one to possibly raise more money for the start-up. At the time, sources said there had been some incoming interest, so talking to a larger pool of buyers was undertaken.</p>
<p>Ning has undergone a series of ups and downs over its history, including dramatic management and business plan shifts.</p>
<p>Its most recent plan has been to go all-premium, trying to find a way to turn the start-up into a profitable enterprise.</p>

<p>That has worked out well, the company has previously said, with strong growth. Since its business shift a year ago, Ning has said, it has had 400 percent year-on-year revenue growth, going from 17,000 to more than 100,000 subscribers and with 60 million monthly active users.</p>
<p>Ning&#8217;s shift has been under the leadership of Rosenthal, who had been COO of Ning until he replaced its founding CEO, Gina Bianchini, in early 2010.</p>
<p>Ning has also recently tried to get into the highly competitive mobile social communications arena, with a service called Mogwee. The traction for the product does not appear to have been significant and it is unclear if the service will continue.</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p><strong>Merging Glam and Ning</strong></p>
<p>Today, my company Ning, where I serve as chairman and cofounder, is announcing that it has agreed to merge into Glam Media. In this post, I&#8217;d like to briefly explain the whats and whys, and to thank a lot of people who have worked very hard to get us to this point.</p>

<p>According to multiple sources close to the situation, Ning has been talking recently to a large pool of companies about selling itself, including Google and Groupon, as well as to a number of private equity companies.</p>
<p>Interest has been both incoming to and outgoing from Ning.</p>
<p>The talks around the fate of the high-profile social networking platform &#8212; co-founded by Silicon Valley icon and investor Marc Andreessen &#8212; are still early and might not result in a sale, although a number of sources said the company was being valued at up to $150 million.</p>
<p>That price is well below previous loftier valuations for Ning and would mean only a break-even for investors, who have put close to $120 million into Ning since it was founded in 2004.</p>
<p>Among its investors: Andreessen, LinkedIn Chairman and investor Reid Hoffman, Legg Mason, Allen &#038; Company and Lightspeed Venture Partners.</p>
<p>There are no bankers involved in the preliminary efforts, in which Andreessen has been involved, although discussions with Google and Groupon have been substantive in nature.</p>
<p>Several other companies &#8212; including AOL, Demand Media and Go Daddy &#8212; have also been approached or are kicking tires at the site. Most would be interested in Ning&#8217;s technology for creating premium social networks. </p>

<p>Such a move would be an interesting one for Ning, which has undergone a series of ups and downs over its history, including dramatic management and business plan shifts.</p>
<p>Its most <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100719/ning-ceo-jason-rosenthal-talks-about-premium-conversion-of-social-networking-platform/">recent plan has been to go all-premium</a>, trying to find a way to turn the start-up into a profitable enterprise.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s worked out well, the company has previously said, with strong growth. Since its business shift a year ago, Ning has said, it has had 400 percent year-on-year revenue growth, going from 17,000 to more than 100,000 subscribers and with 60 million monthly active users. </p>
<p>Ning&#8217;s shift has been under the leadership of Jason Rosenthal, who had been COO of Ning until he <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100315/ning-ceo-gina-bianchini-to-step-down-becomes-an-eir-at-andreessen-horowitz/">replaced its founding CEO, Gina Bianchini</a>, in early 2010.</p>
<p>Ning has also recently tried to get into the highly competitive mobile social communications arena, with a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110228/video-nings-andreessen-and-rosenthal-talk-about-new-social-chat-service-mogwee/">service called Mogwee</a>. The traction for the product does not appear to have been significant.</p>
<p>Ning&#8217;s Rosenthal declined to comment about any sales efforts when reached by me today.</p>

<p>&#8220;The demand is constant,&#8221; said Dan Gilmartin, Where&#8217;s vice president of marketing. &#8220;Every company is looking for these people.&#8221;<br />
The intense competition for mobile engineers, which affects large companies and fast-growing start-ups alike, is emerging as a key bottleneck as companies scramble to capitalize on the fast growth of smartphones and other mobile devices.</p>

<p>Yes, it&#8217;s actually called Mogwee, which was the codename for the new mobile social communications service being launched tonight by Ning, the high-profile social networking platform co-founded by Silicon Valley icon and investor Marc Andreessen.</p>
<p>Part Twitter, part SMS, part Path and any number of such social start-ups, Mogwee actually stands for &#8220;more great weekends,&#8221; said CEO Jason Rosenthal, who has been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100719/ning-ceo-jason-rosenthal-talks-about-premium-conversion-of-social-networking-platform">focusing Ning on premium offerings</a>.</p>
<p>BoomTown interviewed Rosenthal and Andreessen&#8211;who is also chairman of Ning&#8211;at an overpriced tea salon in San Francisco last week about the latest entrant into the crowded socializing of smartphones market.</p>
<p>The Mogwee app was approved today for the Apple iPhone and iPad. The Google Android version is coming in about a week and the one for Research in Motion&#8217;s BlackBerry is to come after that.</p>
<p>Also on deck: Integration with big social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Currently, the only way to bring in friends is via your cell phone&#8217;s address book.</p>
<p>Once loaded, you can use Mogwee to chat live, share photos, play games, make analog plans and&#8211;<em>horrors</em>&#8211;throw sheep.</p>
<p>As you can see from the video and screenshots below, a user creates any series of &#8220;Hangouts&#8221;&#8211;such as a whiskey one by Andreessen&#8211;for real-time groups or one-to-one chat.</p>

<p>In January I talked to you about the custom social revolution that is fueling our business as more and more customers come to us to create powerful, custom social websites for their group, band, cause, classroom or business. <p>I’ve been asked a few times&#8211;how does this relate to Ning? I believe that innovation (not the word, the act) is critical to making Ning a great company, not just building one great product, but a host of amazing new products for the future. Is Apple just the iPod? Google just Search? HP just a printer? We need to be pushing into new businesses that make sense and relate to our &#8220;social&#8221; DNA. We have an extremely talented engineering team&#8211;giving them new challenges and the freedom to invent makes Ning a better company and one that attracts and retains amazing people who want to do amazing things.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s nice to hear enthusiasm on the part of <a href="http://www.linkinpark.com/main/">Linkin Park</a> band member Mike Shinoda about an innovative-for-the-music-industry effort to give fans a chance to be part of the iconic Grammy-winning rock band.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because most artists or content creators&#8211;while making all the right sounds about the Internet&#8217;s impact on their business&#8211;often privately cringe at the ongoing flood of user-generated material that has drastically changed the industry.</p>
<p>Not Shinoda, who is certain he will find some real talent via a new online contest, called &#8220;Linkin Park, Featuring You,&#8221; that gives anyone an opportunity to collaborate with the band to produce an original song based on some of the tracks from the forthcoming single “The Catalyst.&#8221;</p>
<p>The song is on Linkin Park&#8217;s next album, &#8220;A Thousand Suns,&#8221; to be released September 14.</p>
<p>&#8220;We looked at it as both risky and fun to save a spot on the record that could be just anything,&#8221; he said in an interview with BoomTown earlier this week. &#8220;It&#8217;s creative, lets the fans be heard and, of course, is a great way to promote the album.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course it is, but Shinoda said he is not expecting to have to put any bad-quality music on the record just to sell more music.</p>
<p>&#8220;The album could not be any more sacred to us and this is certainly an X-factor, which is kind of a move against the grain for us,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But the Internet has actually given a lot more people a chance to be heard and, as it has turned out, amateurs are so much better than we ever expected.&#8221;</p>
<p>So far, Shinoda said, he has just sampled a few dozen of the thousands of submissions so far, either selecting randomly or via a popularity ranking system the contest uses. He said he&#8217;s also using a range of people who are part of the Linkin Park team to filter material.</p>

<p>But, ultimately, Shinoda and his bandmates (pictured here) will pick the winning submission, with either the song to be included on the band&#8217;s new album or the winner to be invited to perform with the band on a song on the upcoming record. Either way, a pretty good prize for an aspiring musician.</p>
<p>Shinoda said he is hoping to hear a lot of different sounds from electronic music to keyboards to guitars and even horns (&#8220;No one has submitted a horn version so far,&#8221; he laughed. &#8220;But I hope someone does.&#8221;)</p>
<p>Linkin Park is using a group of Internet companies to carry out the massive user-generated effort, including: MySpace Music (platform, promotion and direct fan messaging); Indaba Music (hosting the MySpace application that allows musicians to auto-syndicate their remixes on MySpace); Top Spin Media (using their email for a song widget to deliver audio stems to all participants); and Ning (the back end to Linkin Park’s Web site, where they are also distributing the audio stems to push back to the contest)</p>
<p>There have been remix contests online done before, such as Snoop Dogg&#8217;s “That Tree” Remix Contest, which had 8,000 entries and generated a lot of fan interest.</p>
<p>But this effort is clearly more ambitious, perhaps because Shinoda is clearly a techie, with an ongoing interest in filling the Linkin Park Web site with puzzles, games and other interactive features.</p>
<p>In fact, Linkin Park had already conducted a smaller contest for fans to submit designs for characters used in a game the band released in April, called &#8220;8-Bit Rebellion,&#8221; for the Apple (AAPL) iPod touch, iPhone and iPad. And, after the game was completed by a player, it unlocked a new song, &#8220;Blackbirds.&#8221;</p>
<p>Shinoda said the band hopes to do even more digitally, trying to involve and engage fans in ways that they never would have tried before.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is a huge unknown factor and this is not something we would have done five years ago,&#8217; he said of the latest collaboration contest. &#8220;But I am not afraid of my fans being good at music, even if it turns out they are better than me.&#8221;</p>

<p>Last week, BoomTown moseyed on down to the Palo Alto, Calif., HQ of Ning&#8211;the high-profile social networking platform co-founded by Silicon Valley icon Marc Andreessen&#8211;to talk to CEO Jason Rosenthal (pictured here) about a dramatic shift in the start-up&#8217;s business plan tomorrow.</p>
<p>As in, go all-premium, trying to find a way to turn the start-up&#8211;which has raised $120 million in venture funding since its late 2004 founding&#8211;into a profitable enterprise.</p>
<p>Translation for Web 2.0: Profits are when you make more money than you spend.</p>
<p>Moving Ning to that cogent realization has been the unenviable task that has fallen to Rosenthal, who had been COO of Ning until he <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/ning-ceo-gina-bianchini-to-step-down-becomes-an-eir-at-andreessen-horowitz">replaced its founding CEO, Gina Bianchini,</a> in March.</p>
<p>Within a month, Rosenthal had whacked 40 percent of the staff, as well as the free, advertising-based Ning product.</p>
<p>In its place: A paid version that formally starts for the 300,000 active networks on its service tomorrow. While there is a 60-day free window, it&#8217;s all premium from here on out.</p>
<p>Wrote Rosenthal, in part, in a memo to staff in April:</p>
<p>&#8220;When I became CEO 30 days ago, I told you I would take a hard look at our business. This process has brought real clarity to what’s working, what’s not, and what we need to do now to make Ning a big success. My main conclusion is that we need to double down on our premium services business.&#8221;</p>
<p>There will also be cases of sponsored communities, such as a partnership announced today around healthcare, in which WEGO Health will provide Ning Plus service to the many health-related networks for free for one year.</p>
<p>Ning has also struck sponsorship relationship with Pearson Publishing on education-focused networks, for example.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll see how it all goes, but it&#8217;s a true and much-needed shift from the growth-over-profits mentality that has seeped too deeply into the Web 2.0 ethos.</p>
<p>Now, it seems, it&#8217;s time to pay the piper, at least at Ning.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.pehub.com/66211/nings-new-ceo-on-its-fundraising-its-future-and-gina-bianchinis-surprise-departure/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+pehub%2Fblog+%28PE+HUB+Blog%29">PE Hub&#8217;s Connie Loizos</a> seems to think it will and brings up the idea several times in an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/ning-ceo-gina-bianchini-to-step-down-becomes-an-eir-at-andreessen-horowitz/">interview with new CEO Jason Rosenthal</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Q: Ning doesn’t have a single non-executive board member; given how much it has raised, how is that, and why is that?</p>
<p>A: Stay tuned, you’ll be hearing from us and seeing things there in coming weeks and months.</p>
<p>Q: Meaning that you’re raising more money?</p>
<p>A: Mmm, I didn’t say that. We’ve run the company a certain way, with a certain board structure. But one thing you can expect from me is that we’re ready to build a board of directors with outside, independent board directors. That’s one of the first things I’ll be working on.</p>
<p>Q: Are you raising more money soon? It sounds like you are.</p>
<p>A: No comment.</p></blockquote>
<p>You can parse this many ways if you&#8217;d like. On the one hand, it seems pretty clear that Ning is going to bring in some new directors, which doesn&#8217;t mean that it&#8217;s raising money. On the other hand, if it is definitely <em>not</em> raising more money, then Rosenthal could just say that. I&#8217;ve asked Ning for any clarification it can provide.</p>
<p>But read the whole interview for yourself. There&#8217;s a bunch of good stuff. For instance: Rosenthal, without saying so, makes it clear that the company was happy to see SVP of engineering Jay Parikh leave last fall.</p>
<p>And he says that Ning is finally ready to move on from its dependence on Google (GOOG) AdSense. But that will take a while&#8211;the company only began building an ad sales team this year.</p>

<p>Ning has raised about $120 million in funding since it was founded in 2004, and it has been one of the more high-profile start-ups and among the most closely watched.</p>
<p>Interestingly, I pinged Bianchini last week about some controversies related to discontent among Ning techies I had heard about in the wake of the fall departure of SVP of Engineering Jay Parikh.</p>
<p>She responded quickly, noting that VP of Engineering Sridatta Viswanath was doing a great job.</p>
<p>And, she added, inviting me in for an update while betraying no sense of her impending departure, Ning was &#8220;gearing up for the launch of the next-generation Ning Network this summer.&#8221;</p>

<p>My fellow co-founder and Ning CEO Gina Bianchini has decided to step down after five and a half years of hard and terrific work. I support her wholeheartedly in her decision. Gina is handing the CEO duties over to Jason Rosenthal, who has been our Chief Operating Officer (COO) and head of business operations for the last year and a half.  Nothing else is changing&#8211;I remain Chairman, the current management team remains exactly the same, and the Ning service continues unchanged.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d like to celebrate this moment by enthusiastically congratulating Gina on an amazing series of accomplishments in her time as CEO. Ning today is one of the world&#8217;s top social networking properties, with more than 2.3 million user-created Ning Networks and more than 45 million registered users, and is far and away the market leading social platform for interests and passions. <p>Let me also give you a thumbnail sketch of Jason Rosenthal, our new CEO. Jason has been a friend and colleague of mine for 15 years&#8211;we first worked together at Netscape, where Jason took on a sequence of crucial management roles from the very early days until we sold the company to America Online in 1998.  Jason then became the first person my co-founders and I brought onboard when we founded Loudcloud in 1999&#8211;our internal nickname for him was &#8220;critical hire.&#8221; Jason and I then worked together there for nearly 10 years, until we sold that company (renamed Opsware) to Hewlett-Packard in 2007. Since that time, Jason has been immersed in Ning as a senior executive, head of business operations, and COO.  Jason is a highly talented executive, manager, and leader, and I can&#8217;t think of anyone better to succeed my co-founder Gina as CEO.</p>
<p>Jason says: &#8220;Through Gina’s vision, leadership, and passion, she has taken the company from inception to our position today as the largest social platform for interests and passions. It&#8217;s been my privilege to work with her for the last 18 months and I look forward to expanding on the outstanding foundation she has put in place.&#8221;</p>

<p>For example, the data show that on Facebook, 57 percent of users are women and 43 percent are men, with the same gender breakdown on Twitter and Yelp. On MySpace, it’s a whopping 64 percent female, and on the social-network-creation site Ning, 59 percent of users are women. There’s slightly more equitable gender distribution on YouTube, which is half women and half men, and professional-networking site LinkedIn has the same gender breakdown. On the photo-sharing site Flickr, women make up 55 percent of users, as they also do on FriendFeed.</p>

<ol>Silicon Valley luminary and Golden Geek cover model Marc Andreessen is adding another gig to his CV: Hewlett-Packard director. Andreessen, who sold his software company, Opsware, to HP two years ago for $1.6 billion, will begin serving on the board immediately, bringing its total number of directors to 11.</p>
<p>Quite a coup for HP.  Andreesen&#8211;who co-authored Mosaic, the browser that popularized the World Wide Web&#8211;is an icon in Silicon Valley and his expertise is highly sought. In addition to helming his new venture capital firm, Andreessen-Horowitz, Andreesen also serves as chairman of social networking outfit Ning and sits on the boards of eBay (EBAY)  and Facebook. HP (HPQ) is lucky to get him, if only because it seems unfathomable that he’d have the time or bandwidth for anything else.</p>
<p>&#8220;Marc Andreessen is a software pioneer whose leadership has helped shape the Internet,&#8221; <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&#038;newsId=20090917006168&#038;newsLang=en">an ebullient  HP CEO Mark Hurd said in a statement</a>. &#8220;Marc’s entrepreneurial background and industry expertise will be a welcome addition to the HP board of directors.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A year after Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy, former workers keep in touch with each other on a niche social network called Forever Lehman. Strangely, it was founded by an ex-Bear Stearns employee.</p>
<p>Sanjeev Naraine spent eight years at Bear Stearns, most recently as a global vice president of videoconferencing. After being laid off in October 2007, the 31-year-old decided to create a network for his colleagues on the social-networking-creation site Ning, &#8220;almost like a virtual elevator where you can meet and say hi,&#8221; he said. He launched Who Killed the Bear? in May 2008.</p>
<p>When Lehman went under, Mr. Naraine figured he might as well create something for its staffers too. &#8220;It was more of just a gut feeling that I should just reserve the [Forever Lehman] name, and if things get bad, I could just launch it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It was a pretty good guess on my part, anyways. And it only cost me a couple of bucks to buy the Web site.&#8221;</p>

<p>In a quiet fund-raising effort, <a href="http://www.ning.com">Ning</a> has raised $15 million more, a round that is valuing the social networking start-up at an eye-popping $750 million valuation.</p>
<p>In its last fundraising $60 million round a little more than a year ago, Ning was valued at $500 million.</p>
<p>The money for this fifth Series E round comes from a Silicon Valley venture firm, <a href="http://www.lightspeedvp.com/">Lightspeed Venture Partners</a>.</p>
<p>The Palo Alto, Calif.-based Ning, founded by well-known entrepreneur and Ning Chairman Marc Andreessen and CEO Gina Bianchini, confirmed the funding when contacted by BoomTown. It was not actively searching for funding.</p>
<p>Other investors in Ning include LinkedIn Chairman Reid Hoffman, Legg Mason, and Allen &#038; Co.</p>
<p>The additional funds raised bring the total garnered by Ning to $119 million.</p>
<p>Ning is a platform aimed at offering customizable tools that let users create their social networks about their interests, such as for fans of the movie &#8220;Twilight.&#8221;</p>
<p>Ning puts online ads on the sites, using Google (GOOG), and is also working on its own advertising platform. It also offers an array of other services and is planning more soon, such as a virtual-gift offering.</p>
<p>Founded in early 2007, it currently has 29.3 million registered users, who are using 1.3 million social networks, and it is adding one million registered users every 15 days, said the company.</p>
<p>But not all its social networks are active, and Ning&#8217;s monthly unique visitors are lower, according to various surveys, at about six million in the U.S.</p>
<p>Ning is one of Andreessen&#8217;s angel investments, although <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090705/new-vc-marc-andreessen-speaks-about-the-dark-side-and-more/">he recently raised $300 million</a> for a new venture fund he is running with longtime investing partner Ben Horowitz.</p>
<p>In an interview, Bianchini said the goal was to become an even bigger platform for building social networks and the money would be used for possible acquisitions and other strategic options, attracting more talent and also to offer its social networks more tools to be discovered.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s clear to me when you look the market&#8230;there needs to be a place for people to express their interests and passions,&#8221; said Bianchini, who noted Facebook and Ning do not necessarily overlap. &#8220;We want to be <em>the</em> social network for interests and passions online.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lightspeed&#8217;s Ravi Mhatre, who led the investment for the venture firm, said it was due to a lot of reasons, although he noted that the effort was not a traditional fund-raising effort, but more of an interest by Ning in adding a top VC to its investor pool and by Lightspeed in Ning&#8217;s hyper-growth.</p>
<p>&#8220;The growth at Ning has been massive in the last year and, combined with the quality of the team and seeing that kind of momentum, it worked out well for us both,&#8221; said Mhatre.</p>

But Web start-ups that say they&#8217;ll make money by charging customers? Still possible.</p>
<p>Today&#8217;s example: <a href="http://omgpop.com/">OMGPOP</a>, the casual gaming site formerly known as iminlikewithyou, which has raised a $5 million round led by Bessemer Venture Partners. Previous investors Spark Capital and Ron Conway&#8217;s Baseline Ventures re-upped, but not Netscape/Ning/<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/marc-andreessens-new-venture-fund-project-a/">&#8220;Project A&#8221; investor Marc Andreessen</a>, who took a flier on the company <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/2008/6/iminlikewithyou-closes-series-a-1-5-million-from-spark-marc-andreesseen-others">last summer</a>.</p>
<p>The site has raised a little more than $6.5 million to date. A conservative valuation would still make the company worth north of $10 million.</p>
<p>Why is it worth anything? The company, which began life in 2006 as a dating site, has a dedicated user base that logs some three hours a month on the site. But it&#8217;s still pre-revenue, as they say.</p>
<p>CEO Dan Porter, who took over for <a href="http://gawker.com/search/charles%20forman/">highly visible founder Charles Forman</a> earlier this year <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/2009/2/iminlikewithyou-hires-new-ceo">(Forman is still at the company, cranking out games)</a>, says that will change this spring. He will be selling &#8220;premium&#8221; accounts/subscriptions, most likely for $5 a month, along with virtual goods (think collectible items, power-ups, etc.).</p>
<p>It&#8217;s possible that the site will roll out some kind of advertising at some point&#8211;Porter says he&#8217;s been testing some ad units with Google (GOOG)&#8211;but those would be ancillary dollars (or dimes).</p>
<p>Can that work? Maybe. Casual games&#8211;free or low-cost Web games that take little time commitment&#8211;<a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-ad-sales-up-for-casual-games-but-retail-subscription-revenues-complete/">appear to be doing well so far in the recession</a>, even as traditional videogame sales falter. And a lot of people are hopeful that the  market for virtual goods&#8211;big in Asia, but limited in the U.S. to a handful of games and a few oddities like Facebook&#8217;s &#8220;gift&#8221; items&#8211;will finally take off.</p>
<p>Not interested in thinking this one through? Fair enough. Try playing the site&#8217;s <a href="http://www.omgpop.com/#/arcade/gamelobby/balloono">&#8220;Balloono&#8221;</a> game, a knockoff of the Nintendo classic Bomberman. I&#8217;m waaaaaay older than the site&#8217;s core 15-25 demo, but I&#8217;ve spent an embarrassing amount of time on this one.</p>

<p>Last night, well-known Internet entrepreneur Marc Andreessen appeared on the &#8220;Charlie Rose&#8221; television interview show, talking about the digital sector and unveiling the news that he is creating a new venture fund.</p>
<p>I had heard rumblings about Andreessen&#8217;s funding efforts earlier this week, with sources I talked to nicknaming it &#8220;Project A.&#8221;</p>
<p>Actually, Andreessen said the new firm is called Andreessen Horowitz (<em>zzzz</em>), because he is doing it with longtime investing partner Ben Horowitz.</p>
<p>&#8220;For the first time in my life, I am crossing over into the dark side,&#8221; said Andreessen.</p>
<p>Although he gave few specific details about the fund, Andreessen essentially said he was simply putting a structure around his own active angel investing, which has included start-ups like Twitter, Digg, LinkedIn and many more.</p>
<p>His new effort will focus on early-stage investments, he said, noting that &#8220;our claim to fame is, we’ve actually, you know, by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs, we’ve done it, we’ve been on that side of the table for a long time; we know what it’s like.&#8221;</p>
<p>Adding that he and Horowitz had made 36 investments over the last three years of up to $200,000, Andreessen said his new firm will make up to $1 million bets on start-ups.</p>
<p>Of course, for most of the interview, Rose zeroed in on hot topics like Facebook, the social-networking site on whose board Andreessen serves.</p>
<p>The voluble tech star did his job, talking about how Facebook could turn on the spigot and make all sorts of money anytime it wants and about the recent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090218/boomtown-decodes-the-zuckerberg-terms-of-service-my-bad-memo-now-with-10-percent-more-so-very-sorrys/">controversy around its Terms of Service kerfuffle</a>.</p>
<p>He also talked about the Andreessen-backed Ning social network service, the Apple (AAPL) iPhone, Twitter, why the New York Times irks him, Google (GOOG), the Amazon (AMZN) Kindle e-book reader and gaming.</p>
<p>Ironically, the Netscape co-founder and his Xbox from Microsoft (MSFT)&#8211;<em>eek</em>&#8211;&#8220;have a very close personal relationship.&#8221;</p>
<p>But Andreessen also told Rose a little bit about the new fund he is raising money for, for example, while discussing the economic meltdown.</p>
<p>Talking about the fact that innovation will survive, Andreessen said: &#8220;Like with our new fund, if we fund a company today, we&#8217;re thinking about a return in seven to 10 years, so we can go through three or four or even five years of economic downturn, as long as, at some point, we come out the other end.&#8221;</p>

<p>Of course, the stock market had to come roaring back and it had to be extra sunny on the very day I was scheduled to have lunch with well-known Silicon Valley investor Ron Conway to talk about the worrisome state of the digital sector.</p>
<p>After all, it was Conway (pictured here), as well as Sequoia Capital, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081009/irony-alert-bubble-making-venture-capitalists-start-popping-them/">sent out a stink bomb of an email last week to his start-ups</a> to deliver a simple message: The Web 2.0 party is over.</p>
<p>Said Conway to his entrepreneurial troops as the market was crashing down and smacking tech companies hard in the process:</p>
<p>&#8220;Unfortunately history DOES repeat itself but I hope we can learn from history and prevent the turmoil from occurring again. The message is simple. Raising capital will be much more difficult now &#8230; the name of the game in this environment in some respects is survival&#8211;survival until conditions change.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Survival!?!</em> What ho? This from the man who is one of the more upbeat of Web investors! Who is one of the backers of Digg, Facebook, Twitter, Ning, Seesmic and 125 other Web 2.0 companies?</p>
<p>Ironically, our lunch yesterday was little more than a year after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070611/ron-conway-speaks-about-porches-and-porsches/">I had had another lunch with Conway</a>, where I also made a video, and during which we had a lively discussion about a range of topics, including the venture business (better than ever!), innovation (better than better than ever!), monetizing video content on the Web (best of all!) and more.</p>
<p>Yesterday, the news was not so happy, of course, although Conway did try to explain in more detail exactly what he meant in his most recent email, which echoed one he had also sent out when the last Internet bubble was popping a half-dozen years ago.</p>
<p>And that is: You better have a year&#8217;s worth of cash and a revenue model or you&#8217;re toast.</p>
<p>Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, he&#8217;s bullish!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday, WordPress Founder Matt Mullenweg and I jumped into the BoomTownMini and took a road trip down the lovely 280 to Palo Alto&#8217;s MacArthur Park restaurant for a lunch thrown by Germany&#8217;s Hubert Burda Media.</p>
<p>Burda runs an annual digital conference in Munich called <a href="http://www.dld-conference.com/">DLD</a> (Digital, Life, Design), which a lot of U.S. tech types have gone to, including me, even though the media giant is best known for its old-line magazines about fashion, cooking and crafts.</p>
<p>But Burda has also been dipping into the digital sector a lot, especially via the tireless tech networking of the company&#8217;s Steffi Czerny and Marcel Reichart, who have established a high profile for the company among Silicon Valley denizens.</p>
<p>That was in evidence at Burda&#8217;s luncheon yesterday, which was crowded with a panoply of techies and hosted by Czerny, Maria Burda, the wife of CEO and owner Hubert Burda, and well-known Israeli investor Yossi Vardi.</p>

<p>Czerny has been taking Maria Burda (pictured here, she is also a famous German television star, better known as Maria Furtwängler) around the Valley on a learning tour this week to meet with companies like Ning, Mozilla, Facebook, and with venture capitalists. They are also here to attend Google&#8217;s Zeitgeist partners&#8217; event, which starts today.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a video of yesterday&#8217;s luncheon, where I was asking everyone about the troubled economic situation and more.</p>

The real killer app for Google is not to turn Orkut into a Facebook clone.
