Sprint Kicks Off Marathon of CES-Timed Mobile Phone Announcements

Just ahead of the start of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sprint revealed the details on the HTC Evo Shift 4G and the Novatel MiFi 3G/4G portable Hotspot. The announcement bulks up Sprint’s 4G lineup ahead of what is expected to be the announcement of several phones for Verizon’s new LTE-based 4G network. Sprint said that the Evo Shift, which had already made a cameo in a leaked Radio Shack advertisement, will be available for $149 after rebates starting Jan. 9, while the MiFi won’t hit stores until Feb. 27. Among the Shift’s features are a slide-out keyboard, Android 2.2 and a 5-megapixel camera.

Novatel: JMP Advises Getting Out; Kindle Is Not Enough

Novatel shares are down hard this morning after JMP Securities analyst Samuel Wilson downgraded the stock to Market Underperform from Market Perform. For the year through yesterday, Novatel shares had rallied 34.7 percent; Wilson notes that the wireless networking equipment company has gotten a boost from its role providing components to the Amazon Kindle 2 e-book reader. But Wilson says the Kindle 2 will contribute at most $10 million a quarter to Novatel’s revenue, “not enough to fill the hole left by the drop in demand in the PC and USB adapter business.”

Novatel Jumps 9% as Morgan Joseph Ups to Buy

Novatel Wireless shares are up sharply today after Morgan Joseph analyst Keven Dede upped his rating on the company to buy from hold, setting a price target of $13. Dede notes that investment presentations by both Novatel and rival wireless broadband card maker Sierra Wireless “included the point that June quarter product sales have remained at solid levels.”
