Jawbone’s Newest Product: Health-Tracking Wristband Called UP

Jawbone, the San Francisco consumer electronics start-up that just grabbed another $70 million in funding, has announced its latest gadget called Up. The new product is described as “an intelligent, wearable wristband with an application that combines tracking, analysis, social and motivational elements.” Jawbone, which makes a popular Bluetooth headset and also the Jambox wireless speaker, said Up will track a user’s movement, sleep patterns and nutrition.

The controversy over Sarah Silverman’s appearance at the tail end of the TED conference last week can be distilled to this: You either like the gutter-mouthed comic or you don’t. In any case, here’s a video I did at the event, including a tour around TED and a chat with a variety of folks, including former RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser–who used to work for Microsoft–praising a speech on the need to focus on energy and global warming by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

Bing Keeps the Changes Coming–But Is It Working?

It certainly is good to see Microsoft working the innovation thing, especially in the consumer space with its Bing search service. The ultimate goal is to gain market share for Bing, from striking deals with hotter companies like Twitter and Facebook to doing a massive advertising and marketing campaign to making constant feature upgrades. This is one of those weeks for Bing, with the launch of a spate of new features that show a lot of chutzpah. But whether all this will spell significant changes in market share compared to dominant rival Google is still an open question.

MSN Debuts Online Health Service

MSN, Microsoft’s online portal, released a beta version of a service to let users manage their health information on the Web. Called My Health Info, the Microsoft offering, which includes a range of widgets and other Web tools, wades into an area that many are attempting to crack, including Google.
