Later today after the markets close, Microsoft will make its first-quarter earnings announcement, which a consensus of analysts expect to show earnings of 55 cents a share on $15.8 billion in revenue. That’s a big lift from the year before, of course, when earnings were 40 cents a share and revenues were lower. Nonetheless, Wall Street has been downgrading Microsoft’s stock, mostly due to worries about the surging popularity of the Apple iPad, the introduction of even more upcoming tablets and the trend’s overall impact on PC and, especially, netbook sales that run the company’s software.

Office 2010, the long-awaited “cloud” version of Microsoft’s Office productivity suite, arrived at market today amid some measured trash-talking from Google. In an anomalous post on the search giant’s Enterprise Blog Tuesday, Google Enterprise Product Management Director Matthew Glotzbach advised against purchasing the software, arguing that users would be better served by, you guessed it, Google Docs.

With much easier comparisons due to a devastating period last year and an upswing in PC sales, Microsoft posted solid third-quarter earnings today after the markets closed. The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant said it had revenue of $14.5 billion in the quarter ended March 31, a six percent rise from a year ago. Net income was $4.01 billion, or 45 cents a share. That handily beat Wall Street expectations of $14.4 billion and 42 cents a share.

Court Affirms Injunction Against Microsoft

A federal appeals court on Tuesday affirmed a $290 million patent-infringement judgment that will bar Microsoft Corp. from selling current versions of its flagship Word software. Microsoft said it has been preparing modified versions of the affected programs that should be ready when the injunction goes into effect on Jan. 11, allowing sales to continue without interruption
