			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Despite the popularity of music downloads or streamed music through online services like Pandora, the good old radio is still a source of entertainment for many people. It turns on as soon as the car starts and inspires shower singers every morning. Plus, it works pretty much the same as it has for decades.</p>
<p>The trusty radio has finally received an upgrade—to the world of high definition. HD Radio, which has been gathering steam for a few years, sounds better and offers more channels than traditional radio. It also sends properly equipped devices text data like a song&#8217;s title and artist name as well as traffic, weather and stock information. One HD Radio even lets you pause programming in mid-stream, so you don&#8217;t have to miss a song or NPR story just because you&#8217;re drying your hair. And future HD Radio devices will record programming like television DVRs do now.</p>

<p>This week, I tested three HD Radio devices to see what all the hype was about: Best Buy&#8217;s Insignia $50 HD Radio Portable Player (<a href="http://bit.ly/75FcIc">http://bit.ly/75FcIc</a>); Coby Electronics Corp.&#8217;s $100 Portable HD Radio System (http://bit.ly/6G6g4Q); and Sony&#8217;s $160 HD Radio with Dock for iPod + iPhone (http://bit.ly/8c0Bqf). I also talked with iBiquity Digital Corp., the company that developed HD Radio technology and licenses it to broadcasters and radio manufacturers, about how this works.</p>
<p>I found some worthwhile offerings in HD Radio, like commercial-free, sub-channels within existing stations and better sound quality. IBiquity claims that HD Radio makes FM stations sound like CD quality and AM stations sound like FM; to my ear, this seemed to be true.</p>
<p>Overall, I didn&#8217;t hear enough incredibly great content or sound quality to want to run out and replace my old radios. Washington, D.C., where I live, supposedly offers 41 HD Radio channels, but I couldn&#8217;t find as many as that. Over 2,000 primary HD Radio stations and some 1,100 sub-channels can be heard in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, but some areas won&#8217;t offer as many stations, according to iBiquity.</p>
<p>Tuning in each HD station takes longer, like the way changing channels on a digital TV takes an extra second. But in my tests, this process took five seconds or more per change of channel. This kind of delay is enough to try anyone&#8217;s patience. </p>
<p>It might help to explain the technology behind HD Radio. HD Radio makes it possible for local broadcasters to transmit content via digital signals on existing AM and FM frequencies. The digital signals are encrypted and eliminate static heard in analog broadcasts, resulting in better sound quality. But they take longer to be decoded by HD Radio receivers. </p>
<p>Many people mistakenly think that in order to listen to HD Radio, they must pay an extra monthly fee like with satellite radio. If you buy an HD Radio device, you&#8217;ll only pay for it because the service itself is free; its price is built into the cost of the hardware.</p>
<p>Besides boosting the signal, HD Radio offers extra channels of programming you wouldn&#8217;t hear on a regular set. It allows existing FM channels to play additional content on &#8220;multicast&#8221; channels. Most multicast channels are commercial-free, and they appear on the radio&#8217;s display as HD2 and HD3. </p>
<p>Don&#8217;t confuse HD Radio with the text data that scrolls across the screens of many current radios, like my car radio. This is a non-audio service called Radio Broadcast Data System that has been around for a while.</p>
<p>Each of the radios I tested offered an HD Seek feature—a way of skimming through all stations to find and play those that could be heard in HD. But HD Seek didn&#8217;t stop on multicast channels; to get to those on each radio, I had to press buttons to tune up or down while listeningwhile already listening to  to a main HD radio channel. Some HD Radio models have HD Seek tuning functions that find HD1 stations as well as HD2 and HD3 channels. I saved these HD2 and HD3 multicast channels in my radio presets so they were easier to find again.</p>
<p>While a radio was tuning in, or linking into, a channel (the process that took several seconds), an &#8220;HD&#8221; logo flashed on each radio&#8217;s display. This logo turned solid when the station was found and finally started playing. I listened to multicast channels like a bluegrass/country station from my local NPR channel. Another station&#8217;s two multicast channels played &#8220;South Asian&#8221; music and the Mormon Channel.</p>
<p>As its name suggests, Sony&#8217;s HD Radio with Dock for iPod + iPhone has a built-in dock for iPods, iPhones and iPod Touches. If, while using this radio, you hear a song on an HD channel that you like, you can hit a &#8220;Tag&#8221; button to save information about that song. The next time you dock an iPod, iPhone or iPod Touch into the Sony radio, these tags are transferred onto the portable player. When you plug that device into a computer and open the iTunes Store, a list of the tagged songs appears, making it easier to recall songs you liked and may want to buy. This radio is a tabletop model and has the largest display screen of the three radios I tested. It also comes with a remote. It saves up to 20 FM and 20 AM presets.</p>
<p>The Insignia HD Radio Portable Player is a much smaller unit that comes with earbuds and an armband for exercising. If this radio tuned in an HD channel that offered multicast sub-channels, these were indicated on the display with a &#8220;+&#8221; sign, like &#8220;HD1+.&#8221; The Insignia radio stores 10 preset stations.</p>
<p>The Coby Electronics Portable HD Radio System resembled a single, lightweight speaker with a wheel, six buttons and a digital display on it. IBiquity Digital said this model uses an older HD Radio technology that doesn&#8217;t offer as much reception sensitivity as the Sony and Insignia. Still, it was simple to use, and its wheel made it a cinch to tune in HD2 and HD3 channels. It stores up to 10 presets.</p>
<p>In September, when Microsoft&#8217;s Zune HD was released, I tested its built-in HD Radio, the only such device capable of pausing live radio content. I paused music and talk radio on the Zune&#8217;s HD Radio when my phone rang, then un-paused the station to resume. This doesn&#8217;t work if the device is turned off and on again before resuming play.</p>
<p>Along with stand-alone radios, HD Radio receivers also are becoming more common in home audio systems and in cars. But while HD Radio&#8217;s sound quality and extra channels are definite pluses, the number of available stations needs to improve to make the wait for the HD channels to start playing more tolerable. </p>

<p>Later today, Perlman&#8211;former principal scientist at Apple (AAPL) and the founder of WebTV&#8211;will officially unveil OnLive, the online service with which he hopes to upend the $46 billion world-wide videogame market. Seven years in the making, OnLive promises to create <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2009/03/23/steve-perlmans-onlive-could-turn-the-video-game-world-upside-down/">an on-demand gaming experience that rivals those offered by dedicated videogame consoles</a>. It&#8217;s capable of streaming <a href="http://kotaku.com/5181300/onlive-makes-pc-upgrades-extinct-lets-you-play-crysis-on-your-tv">even the most advanced, CPU-intensive games</a> to television and computer&#8211;Macintosh or PC&#8211;without lag or a reduction in quality. &#8220;We&#8217;re providing you with the latest high-end titles, the exact same ones you would see at Target or Best Buy, in the same release windows,&#8221; <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2009-03-24-onlive_N.htm">Perlman told USA Today</a>. &#8220;But what is really cool is you don&#8217;t need any high-end hardware to play them. There&#8217;s no physical media. It&#8217;s an all-digital platform. You never need to upgrade your equipment at home.&#8221;</p>
<p>A compelling proposition. A potentially disruptive one too, if OnLive is able to deliver it with the reliability and ease of use it promises. <a href="http://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=216200305">Said IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon</a>, &#8220;It&#8217;s a good idea and has potential, but the thing I need reassurance on is being able to deliver this over the network. In games there&#8217;s no wiggle room&#8211;when you press a button to fire you want to fire,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But if it works, this could be a disruptive.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s no other major item most of us own that is as confusing, unpredictable and unreliable as our personal computers. Everybody has questions about them, and we aim to help.</p>
<p>Here are a few questions about computers I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>In last week&#8217;s Mailbox, you said that Windows XP machines can slow down over time unless you do &#8220;a lot of techie maintenance.&#8221; What did you mean? I regularly defragment the hard disk, tweak the registry, and clean out temporary files, but my PC is still slow.</em></p>
<p class="answer"> All of these things are helpful, though I don&#8217;t recommend that nontechie users &#8220;tweak&#8221; the Windows registry, which contains vital program information that can mistakenly be removed or altered if you don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re doing. Another speed-enhancing tactic is to use a program like Startup Cop Pro (<a href="http://snipurl.com/b4v91" rel="external">snipurl.com/b4v91</a>) to prevent unneeded programs from running at startup, and one like PC Decrapifier (<a href="http://www.pcdecrapifier.com" rel="external">pcdecrapifier.com</a>) to clean out craplets &#8212; unwanted pre-installed programs.</p>
<p>However, what I had in mind when I wrote that was something more drastic, something a number of techies I know do annually: a complete replacement of Windows. This involves first backing up all your files, and then performing what&#8217;s called a &#8220;clean install&#8221; of Windows XP that wipes out everything on the PC and starts fresh. You then would copy back all your data files and re-install your programs.</p>
<p>This can make the computer feel like new, but the problem is that it can be tricky and tedious for nontechie users. Depending on the source of the copy of Windows XP you are using for the clean install, you may have to locate and re-install drivers for peripheral hardware and for hardware features of your particular make and model of PC. You may run into licensing and activation issues with your re-installed programs. And you may have to download numerous patches and upgrades for Windows itself and for your programs.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I am considering buying one of the new MacBook Pro 15&#8243; laptops. What do you think of the keyboard on this laptop? Is it easy to type on compared to other laptop keyboards? What do you think of the shiny screen?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Because keyboard and screen preferences vary from person to person, I strongly urge all laptop shoppers to try out models they are considering before buying, even if only for a few minutes at a retail store. Having said that, I find the MacBook Pro keyboard to be very comfortable and easy to use, with good key spacing and feel. I personally prefer matte screens to glossy ones, but own laptops with both types and find the glossy ones acceptable, if not optimal.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I use the Windows Mail program that came with Vista on my computer. You say Windows 7 won&#8217;t come with that program. Is there something similar that can be installed?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Microsoft will encourage people to download a similar free program called Windows Live Mail, which is closely tied to its Live online service. Or, you could switch to a competing email program, or rely on Web-based email.</p>

But that will all change on Oct. 22, when T-Mobile and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a> bring out the G1, the first hand-held computer that&#8217;s in the same class as Apple&#8217;s iPhone.</p>

<p>I have been testing the G1 extensively, in multiple cities and in multiple scenarios. In general, I like it and consider it a worthy competitor to the iPhone. Both devices run on fast 3G phone networks and include Wi-Fi. Both have smart-touch interfaces and robust Web browsers. Both have the ability to easily download third-party apps, or programs.</p>
<p>But the two devices have different strengths and weaknesses, and are likely to attract different types of users.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve been lusting after the iPhone&#8217;s functionality, but didn&#8217;t like its virtual keyboard or its user interface or its U.S. carrier, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=t'>AT&#038;T</a>, the G1 may be just the ticket for you. But it does have some significant downsides.</p>
<p>By far, the G1&#8242;s biggest differentiator is that it has a physical keyboard, which is revealed by sliding open the screen. The keyboard proved only fair in my tests, with keys that are too flat and that can be hard to see in bright light, and with a bulge in the body on the right side that you have to reach over to type. But, for the many people who can&#8217;t stomach typing on glass, the G1 keyboard will be a welcome sight. It&#8217;s complemented by a BlackBerry-like trackball for navigation.</p>

<p>The G1 has a removable battery and uses removable, expandable memory cards. And it&#8217;s even a bit cheaper than its Apple (AAPL) rival: $179 versus $199. Its data plan also costs less &#8212; $25 a month versus $30 &#8212; and includes 400 free text messages, which cost extra on the iPhone. There&#8217;s also a $35 plan that includes unlimited text messages. And both plans include free use of T-Mobile&#8217;s Wi-Fi hotspots.</p>
<p>The G1 has a slick, clever touch interface to go along with its keyboard, and it includes a powerful new operating system. The operating system, called Android, was built by Google (GOOG). It is slated to appear on other phones over time, though it likely will look different on other devices because it is fully open to modification by other companies.</p>
<p>On the G1, the touch interface is fast and smooth. Programs appear when you drag up a tab at the bottom of the screen, and notifications of new messages can be read by simply dragging down the top bar of the screen.</p>
<p>You get much more flexibility in organizing your desktop than on the iPhone. In addition to placing icons for programs there, you can add individual contacts, music playlists, folders, Web pages and more. You just press on the screen for a longer-than-usual time, and a list of items you can add appears. It also has a higher-resolution camera than the iPhone, but like the Apple phone, it can&#8217;t shoot video.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also much easier to place a phone call on the G1 than on the iPhone. You can just start typing a contact name or phone number while on the home screen, sparing you the need to enter the phone or contacts program. And there&#8217;s a virtual phone keypad that allows you to avoid opening the physical keyboard just to dial a number. It&#8217;s also much easier to jump to the top and bottom of long lists.</p>
<p>The G1&#8242;s Web browser, built on the same technology as the iPhone&#8217;s, worked well at rendering scores of common sites in my tests. You can either pan around pages with your finger, or choose to view the whole page at once and zero-in on a section by moving a small rectangle around.</p>
<p>This first Android phone, which was largely designed by Google and built by Taiwan-based HTC, also includes some key features Apple omitted. These include a limited ability to copy and paste text, and the ability to send photos directly to other phones without relying on email, a common phone feature called MMS, or Multimedia Messaging Service. And, unlike AT&#038;T (T), T-Mobile (DT) will even allow users to legally unlock the phone after 90 days and start using it on another carrier, provided you pay a hefty early-termination fee.</p>

<p>In my battery tests, the G1 lasted through the day, but I had to charge it every night. That&#8217;s better than the initial battery life on the current iPhone, though in fairness, Apple has improved the iPhone&#8217;s battery life through software updates, and I found them to be about the same for mixed use.</p>
<p>In my talk-time test, the G1 got just under its claimed five hours, about 19 minutes better than the iPhone.</p>
<p>There are two email programs: one for Google&#8217;s Gmail, another for all other email services. There&#8217;s an instant-messaging program that works with multiple services. There&#8217;s one program for accessing Google&#8217;s YouTube service and another for Google Maps. The G1&#8242;s Google Maps program even has a feature, coming soon as well to the iPhone, that offers photographic street views of certain locations. But the G1, unlike the iPhone, includes a compass that orients the street views as you walk.</p>
<p>The built-in download store for third-party programs, called Market, worked well in my tests. I was able to quickly download games, productivity programs, and other apps and, unlike Apple, Google says it isn&#8217;t blocking any programs.</p>
<p>However, the G1 also has downsides. It&#8217;s a chunky brick of a device. While it&#8217;s a bit narrower than the iPhone and feels OK in the hand, it&#8217;s almost 20% heavier and nearly 30% thicker. It also has a smaller screen and doesn&#8217;t accept standard stereo headphones.</p>
<p>The G1 also skimps on memory. It comes with only 1 gigabyte of storage, just one-eighth of what the base iPhone offers. To increase the G1&#8242;s memory, you have to lay out more money to buy a larger memory card.</p>
<p>The G1 also limits third-party applications to a paltry 128 megabytes of memory. At one point in my tests, after downloading a bunch of third-party programs, and adding songs and videos, the G1 warned me it was running out of room, a warning I have never seen on my heavily used iPhone.</p>
<p>Another downside for some users: The G1 is tightly tied to Google&#8217;s online services. While you can use non-Google email and IM services, the only way you can get contacts and calendar items into the phone is to synchronize with Google&#8217;s online calendar and contacts services. In fact, you can&#8217;t even use the G1 without a Google user ID and password.</p>
<p>The G1 doesn&#8217;t allow the use of Microsoft&#8217;s Exchange service for email, contacts or calendar items, or any other company&#8217;s over-the-air synchronization for contacts and appointments.</p>
<p>In my tests, synchronizing with Gmail, and with Google&#8217;s contacts and calendar applications, was smooth and fast. So, the G1 may be great for dedicated Google users, but not so good for folks who rely on competing calendar and contacts services from, say, Yahoo (YHOO) or Microsoft (MSFT). Future Android phones may not be so tightly tied to Google services, but the G1 is.</p>
<p>It also can&#8217;t synchronize any data at all directly with a PC or Mac. For instance, it can&#8217;t sync with Microsoft Outlook or Windows Media Player on a PC, with Apple&#8217;s iCal or Address Book programs on a Mac, or with iTunes on either Windows or the Mac. It has no PC-based synchronization software of its own, and it offers no way to automatically back up your settings, music, applications, videos or photos, either to a computer or to an online repository, though Google says it plans to add a backup feature.</p>
<p>To get Outlook or iCal data onto the G1, you must install add-on software. To get your songs, videos and photos onto the G1, you must plug the phone, or its memory card, into your computer and manually move the files over.</p>
<p>Overall, I found the G1&#8242;s user interface inferior to the iPhone&#8217;s. It lacks the iPhone&#8217;s ability to flick between multiple pictures and Web pages, or to zoom in and zoom out of a photo or Web page by simply using two fingers to &#8220;pinch&#8221; or expand the image. It also doesn&#8217;t automatically change the orientation of the screen from portrait to landscape simply by turning the phone.</p>
<p>Further, many common controls that are easily visible on the iPhone can be accessed on the G1 only by pressing a menu button or by using keyboard shortcuts you have to memorize. Examples are stopping the loading of a Web page or moving forward to the next Web page.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s also no on-screen keyboard even for quick tasks, such as typing Web addresses, so you&#8217;re constantly having to turn the phone and open the physical keyboard, which quickly becomes a pain.</p>
<p>The G1 also is a greatly inferior multimedia device when compared with the iPhone. Its music player, while adequate, isn&#8217;t as nice as the built-in iPod on the iPhone. And it lacks a video player altogether, though a rudimentary one can be downloaded from the Market. The G1 does come with a program for buying songs from Amazon (AMZN), which worked well in my tests.</p>
<p>And then there&#8217;s the network. Despite all the troubles AT&#038;T has experienced with its fast 3G network, which is still being built out, that company has 3G service for the iPhone and other devices in 320 U.S. metro areas. By contrast, T-Mobile offers 3G in just 20 U.S. metro areas. Eight more cities are due to come online by year end, which will still leave T-Mobile&#8217;s 3G coverage far behind that of AT&#038;T and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=vz'>Verizon</a> (VZ), which will soon introduce its own iPhone competitor, the BlackBerry Storm.</p>
<p>I did 40 speed tests comparing the G1 and the iPhone to see how fast they could download a Web page over 3G. The tests, conducted in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Washington, D.C., showed the iPhone to be consistently faster, by an average of between 50 and 100 kilobytes per second, even though T-Mobile&#8217;s network was carrying much less traffic than AT&#038;T&#8217;s.</p>
<p>Overall, the G1 is a very good first effort, and a godsend for people who prefer physical keyboards or T-Mobile but want to be part of the new world of powerful pocket computers.</p>

<p>Oh, there had to be much, <em>much</em> gnashing of teeth in the corporate offices of the Time Warner Center in New York yesterday with news of the <a href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/8/comcast-buys-dailycandy-for-125-million-beats-out-viacom-for-newsletter-business">sale of DailyCandy to Comcast for $125 million.</a></p>
<p>Why?</p>
<p>Maybe because that tasty payment is going right into the hands of Bob Pittman&#8217;s Pilot Group Ventures, which bought the fashion and shopping newsletter business for $3 million in 2003.</p>
<p>Longtime media exec Pittman was the former star AOLer, whose nickname was Bob &#8220;Pitchman&#8221; for his smooth-as-silk selling and even more marked spinning skills.</p>
<p>But the Web 1.0 supernova fell quickly to earth, after the online service merged with Time Warner (TWX) in early 2001, in what is now considered one of the more significant world-class corporate disasters.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/08/bob_pittman_lo.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/08/bob_pittman_lo.jpg" alt="" title="bob_pittman_lo" width="168" height="243" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2516" /></a></p>
<p>After being tossed out of AOL Time Warner in mid-2002, Pittman (pictured here), along with AOL head Steve Case, was blamed for the stock decline and other woes at the media giant by the Time Warner side, whose deep bitterness toward him has never really faded away.</p>
<p>Now, with Time Warner trying to make a deal to sell the AOL unit for up to $10 billion to Yahoo or Microsoft&#8211;despite it being valued at $20 billion only a few years ago&#8211;Pittman&#8217;s small but impressive score has got to grate.</p>
<p>&#8220;I have been associated with the start-up, turnaround or acceleration of many companies and major brands, and rarely have I seen the kind of creativity, commitment and passion I&#8217;ve seen day in and day out at DailyCandy,&#8221; said Pittman in a letter to DailyCandy staff yesterday about the sale. &#8220;And the results speak for themselves: Since we made our investment in 2003, subscriptions have grown from just over 200,000 to over 2.5 million.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the letter, Pittman said the company&#8217;s EBITDA was over $10 million this year on revenues of $25 million.</p>

<p>The section comes from Chapter Six, &#8220;Way, Way After the Goldrush,&#8221; as the deal imploded:</p>

<p><em><strong>THERE&#8217;S NO BUSINESS LIKE NO BUSINESS</strong></p>
<p>Despite the troubles, Pittman, Case and [former AOL Time Warner CEO Dick] Parsons grinned out from the June 2002 cover of AOL Time Warner&#8217;s internal magazine, called Keywords, under the headline &#8220;Lift Off!&#8221; Actually, &#8220;Grounded!&#8221; would have been a more accurate headline, given the problems that would mount over the summer.</p>
<p>That was especially true at AOL, where Pittman found that just about everything&#8211;from morale to ad sales to subscriber numbers&#8211;was trending downward at an accelerating pace.</p>
<p>He had grown weary of infighting at the company, exhausted from the traveling and worn down by the prospect that turning around AOL would take more work than he had ever imagined.</p>
<p>For three months, he&#8217;d been trying to revive AOL while still working as COO of the combined company. Pittman was stretched about as thin as he could go, and AOL was still sputtering.</p>
<p>&#8220;He had been getting a pounding and he did not see a way to turn it around,&#8221; said AOL marketing whiz Jan Brandt, whom Pittman had brought back into the top echelons of the company upon his return. &#8220;And there was no end in sight.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, for Pittman, there was no end in sight for the time it might take to fix AOL, especially because of how badly he and his team had alienated the entire Time Warner management.</p>
<p>The New York Post even began running a regular &#8220;Pittman Meter,&#8221; an obnoxious graphic that offered assessments ranging from whether he was &#8220;toast&#8221; to &#8220;safe&#8221; on any given day.</p>
<p>Mostly, Pittman was burnt to a crisp.</p>
<p>With increasingly skepticism that he could fix the problems at AOL, Pittman went to Parsons before the July 4th holiday weekend and told him he wanted out.</p>
<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t do this anymore,&#8221; said Pittman to Parsons, who urged him to think things through over the weekend.</p>
<p>But the weekend put him over the edge, when the New York Times&#8211;whose reporter, David Kirkpatrick, had become a favored outlet for disgruntled Time Warner executives to vent—ran a scathing piece detailing Pittman&#8217;s failure to turn things around at AOL and suggesting there was a target on his back.</p>
<p>&#8220;Executives and shareholders are united in more or less open revolt,&#8221; wrote Kirkpatrick. While the story referred to discomfort with the departed Levin too, it singled out Pittman explicitly.</p>
<p>&#8220;Most of all, Time Warner executives have turned their ire specifically at one man&#8211;Mr. Pittman, a former America Online executive who became chief operating officer after the merger,&#8221; it read. &#8220;He angered many Time Warner executives with what they called his brusque manner … he developed a reputation for brashness, ruthlessness and success at America Online, and he applied the same tactics at Time Warner on his return.&#8221;</p>
<p>As if channeling the Time Warner side&#8217;s anger, Kirkpatrick summed up their message: &#8220;Now many executives from the former Time Warner wish the merger would go away, and, barring that, they wish that Mr. Pittman would.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the article, Parsons was quoted offering a rather tepid defense of Pittman: &#8220;People get angry and that anger has to be attached to something or someone,&#8221; he was quoted as saying. &#8220;Some of it has been attached to Bob and I am not sure if it is entirely fair.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, <em>not entirely</em>, Parsons&#8217;s quote seemed to indicate to me&#8211;but maybe it&#8217;s a little fair! This deft response definitely did not look good for Pittman.</p>
<p>And with Parsons firmly ensconced in the CEO position and no place higher up on the ladder for Pittman to go, what sense did it make for him to keep fighting what was, for the foreseeable future, a losing battle in which he would probably end up getting tossed out anyway?</p>
<p>With the executive ranks blaming him and the board losing faith that he could turn AOL around, Pittman had no chance of regaining any credibility as COO.</p>
<p>&#8220;Pittman left on own steam, but he knew what was coming,&#8221; said one board member, who actually admired Pittman.</p>
<p>Pittman wanted to announce he was leaving, but Parsons asked him to delay the news until the board could approve a new management structure in mid-July.</p>
<p>His plan was to promote Time Inc.&#8217;s Don Logan and HBO&#8217;s Jeff Bewkes to the top of the AOL Time Warner structure, effectively splitting Pittman&#8217;s duties into two positions, both of which would report directly to Parsons.</p>
<p>Logan would head the Media and Communications Group, the subscription and ad businesses that would include Time Inc., Time Warner Cable, the Interactive Video Unit, Time Warner Books and AOL.</p>
<p>And Bewkes would run the Entertainment and Networks Group, made up of HBO, New Line Cinema, The WB, Turner Networks, Warner Bros. and Warner Music.</p>
<p>Getting the pair interested in the arrangement would be difficult, given the recalcitrance both had felt toward the merger in the first place.</p>
<p>But it was critical for Parsons to pull this off, since Logan and Bewkes were considered the best and most successful operators in the company, though they were vastly different in personality and style.</p>
<p>Logan, who had been the CEO of Time Inc. since 1994, was one of the most admired managers in the company, especially within his division, where he was openly revered for turning around the fortunes of the magazine publishing house.</p>
<p>An Alabama native, he was the son of a housewife and a welder for the state highway department. Logan went to Auburn University as a math major, and worked his way through school as a computer programmer for NASA in Huntsville. He continued his studies&#8211;specializing in abstract math&#8211;at Clemson University, and went on to pursue a doctorate part-time the University of Houston.</p>
<p>While in Texas, he worked for Shell Oil, creating research tools in the search for oil, but he found big-company life too slow.</p>
<p>Answering an ad for a Birmingham, Ala., publishing company called Progressive Farmer, later renamed Southern Progress, Logan worked first in data processing and fulfillment and later in direct marketing.</p>
<p>Time Inc. bought Southern Progress in 1985, and Logan was running it by 1986.</p>
<p>Admiring Logan&#8217;s reputation for consistent results, [former Time Warner CEO Jerry] Levin brought him to New York in 1992 as Time Inc.&#8217;s president and COO. Logan got the CEO spot two years later.</p>
<p>Logan fulfilled Levin&#8217;s expectations by goosing the magazine division&#8217;s results dramatically, turning in 41 consecutive quarters of earnings growth and tripling its cash flow.</p>
<p>Logan managed all this while affecting a folksy Southern image as a good old boy who just loved to go fishing. (He had even appeared on the cover of Field &#038; Stream in a feature about jungle fish.)</p>
<p>Pretty much everyone I asked about Logan felt the need to mention his fishing, as if it were mysterious and complex part of his nature&#8211;imagine that, a fishing math major!</p>
<p>In the company newsletter, Logan was quoted as noting that business was a lot like fishing, in that they both require &#8220;persistence and patience.&#8221;</p>
<p>The burly Logan might have had true &#8220;down home&#8221; bona fides, but he was as smooth as any city slicker in leading the potentially divisive troops at Time Inc.</p>
<p>His greatest strength appeared to be in leaving people alone, yet demanding performance as a price for that independence.</p>
<p>&#8220;He was a straight talker in a culture of bullshit and platitudes,&#8221; said former Pathfinder executive Linda McCutcheon. &#8220;And he believed you grew incrementally to greatness.&#8221;</p>
<p>The very qualities that were so admired at Time Warner were derided by AOL&#8217;s top brass, who considered Logan a typical Time Warner corporate timeserver and not much of a risk taker.</p>
<p>&#8220;He thought growing at five percent a year was a great accomplishment,&#8221; said the voluble [AOL ad exec] Myer Berlow. &#8220;He was not exactly the kind of person who welcomed us.&#8221;</p>
<p>The AOLers expected more rapport with Jeff Bewkes, the glib and good-looking head of HBO.</p>
<p>Much as everyone mentioned Logan&#8217;s interest in fishing, the word Time Warner people invariably used to describe Bewkes was &#8220;handsome.&#8221;</p>
<p>And he is indeed a handsome man, slim and tall with a curious mix of Hollywood glamour and vague preppiness that suited the more conservative elements of the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;Golden boy&#8221; had long been a defining image for Bewkes, who was a graduate of Yale University and Stanford Business School (again, that heady mix of traditional East Coast and trendy California).</p>
<p>The impact he made was a strong one&#8211;an executive comfortable with both Hollywood talent and deal makers alike.</p>
<p>Bewkes came to HBO many years previously, and worked in the finance and marketing departments. He was considered a winner even in his earliest days.</p>
<p>&#8220;We all used to assume he would eventually be the boss,&#8221; said a former AOL executive Mark Walsh, who worked with Bewkes at HBO. &#8220;He had this air of the inevitable about him that was very appealing.&#8221;</p>
<p>His star rose quickly and he eventually became the chairman and CEO of HBO, building a close-knit team around him that was responsible for burnishing the somewhat dull image of the pay-cable channel to an edgy sheen with such huge hits as &#8220;The Sopranos&#8221; and &#8220;Sex and the City.&#8221;</p>
<p>This conspicuous success quickly attracted AOLers, who identified with Bewkes&#8217;s more outgoing style and considered his passionate, entrepreneurial nature akin to their own.</p>
<p>They could not have been more wrong about his regard for AOL, though&#8211;Bewkes was one of the first executives to complain internally and loudly about the idiocy of the merger deal.</p>
<p>He wasn&#8217;t shy about challenging Steve Case&#8217;s dreamy ideas of convergence in company meetings, and he could pull it off because his HBO success gave him such credibility.</p>
<p>Bewkes&#8217;s ability to move with comfort through all parts of the company made everyone assume that he was headed for bigger things.</p>
<p>That included AOL, which Bewkes was asked to fix in early 2002. It was a position he&#8217;d quite smartly turned down, obviously aware that grabbing onto that sticky situation would hurt him.</p>
<p>Pittman really had no choice in being the one to take on AOL&#8211;although I joked to him when he went back to Dulles that he&#8217;d just been handed a tar baby that he&#8217;d have a hard time pulling away from without damage.</p>
<p>That was finally clear when the company announced his departure&#8211;which had been widely leaked in newspapers&#8211;on July 18.</p>
<p>As usual, his public statement had an odd mixture of spin and truth to it.</p>
<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve decided that after a new CEO is in place at AOL, I won&#8217;t return to AOL Time Warner as chief operating officer,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Having worked so hard to build the AOL service and brand, and after then going through the merger and the last 18 months, it&#8217;s time to take a break.&#8221;</p>
<p>Managers and staff at other company divisions greeted the news of Pittman&#8217;s departure and the ascension of Logan and Bewkes with joy.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Taliban have been routed,&#8221; joked irrepressible Time Inc. Editorial Director John Huey, in what was a common sentiment.</p>
<p>Finally, Time Warner had taken back the company from the horrible invaders. The gloating ran rampant.</p>
<p>Media pundit and New York columnist Michael Wolff, who had worked with Time Warner on its various failed Internet efforts, took a dim view of the glee in his &#8220;This Media Life&#8221; column.</p>
<p>Wolff correctly asked: What had Time Warner really won by purging Pittman&#8211;who walked away with a fortune&#8211;and where would that leave the company?</p>
<p>&#8220;Of course, taking it out on the guy who outsmarted you does not, in turn, make you smart,&#8221; he wrote in his slap-down style. &#8220;[Pittman] doesn&#8217;t hang around a disaster area. This is show business. If the show flops, you close it. Onward and upward.&#8221;</p>
<p>AOL&#8217;s early CEO Jim Kimsey, who had long been enjoying his retirement, was even more direct, dialing Pittman up on the phone.</p>
<p>&#8220;Is this the unemployed Mr. Pittman? Because this is the unemployed Mr. Kimsey,&#8221; he greeted Pittman. &#8220;Congratulations&#8211;you moved Osama Bin Laden off the front page!&#8221;</p>
<p>But while Time Warnerites rejoiced in their hope that the merger turmoil was finally over, the company&#8217;s troubles wouldn&#8217;t leave the front pages for a long time to come.</em></p>
<p>We&#8217;ll see if that has changed at all, after <a href="http://ir.timewarner.com/results.cfm">Time Warner announces its second quarter earnings</a> later today.</p>
