				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When a Kickstarter project sets out to raise $30,000, and smashes through that goal in five hours &#8212; and then five days later it has raised more than $1.8 million &#8212; you gotta wonder, how did they not see that coming?</p>
<p>A &#8220;3-D printing pen&#8221; called <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1351910088/3doodler-the-worlds-first-3d-printing-pen">3Doodler</a> is the latest sensation on the crowdfunding site. (Well, there was also &#8220;<a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1131717127/inocente-homeless-creative-unstoppable">Inocente</a>,&#8221; the <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/news/inocente-makes-history-as-first-crowdfunded-oscarwinner-8508973.html">Kickstarter-backed film that won an Oscar last night</a>. Not too shabby.)</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/02/3Doodler.jpeg"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/02/3Doodler-380x285.jpeg" alt="3Doodler" width="380" height="285" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-297864" /></a>The creators of 3Doodler say they were totally unprepared for its success &#8212; but that doesn&#8217;t mean they&#8217;re not able to fulfill the demand, even as much more accumulates in the next 27 days before their Kickstarter campaign ends.</p>
<p>You could think of the 3Doodler as a hot-glue gun that makes sculptures in the air. The trick is that it both heats and then rapidly cools plastic strands, so they hold their shape.</p>
<p>Creative types can dream into existence whatever they like with the 3Doodler, while non-artists will be able to print out stencils to &#8220;draw on the lines&#8221; and make things like a replica of the Eiffel Tower.</p>
<p>Max Bogue and Peter Dilworth of toy research and development firm WobbleWorks posted the project to Kickstarter on Feb. 19 at midnight in Boston. They haven&#8217;t slept much since.</p>
<p>Less than five hours after posting, 3Doodler had met its goal of $30,000. &#8220;We were jumping up and down &#8212; quietly, because my girlfriend was asleep in the next room,&#8221; Bogue said.</p>
<p>&#8220;We knew there was a market for it, but we weren&#8217;t sure,&#8221; said Bogue. &#8220;It&#8217;s a different kind of item.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bogue said the original Kickstarter goal was set up so that WobbleWorks would take a loss on the production. Where the company&#8217;s factory required a minimum order of 2,000 units, $30,000 would have only been enough to create 500 units.</p>
<p>&#8220;We were willing to take a hit because we believed so much in the product,&#8221; said Bogue.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/02/3Doodler2.jpeg"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/02/3Doodler2-213x285.jpeg" alt="3Doodler2" width="213" height="285" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-297865" /></a>The goal turned out to be ludicrously low. But there&#8217;s no penalty for underestimating yourself in Kickstarter-land; WobbleWorks continues to add more pens for new backers, with delivery dates pushing into 2014.</p>
<p>Still, Kickstarter projects have become notorious for delays, especially after unexpected demand. Popular crowdfunded gadgets like the Pebble smart watch have been <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130123/pebble-smart-watch-starts-shipping-well-less-than-500-of-them/">woefully underprepared</a> to manufacture and distribute as many products as they have promised to their backers.</p>
<p>It has gotten to the point that Kickstarter has <a href="http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/kickstarter-is-not-a-store">publicly declared</a> that people <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121105/kickstarter-ceo-no-ipo-for-us-and-no-equity-crowdfunding-either/">should not treat it like a store</a>, and has banned projects from posting simulations and renderings that might overpromise something that can&#8217;t be delivered.</p>
<p>Bogue said he&#8217;s confident that 3Doodler will be an exception to that trend, given his extensive experience in developing and manufacturing toys. Kickstarter also gave WobbleWorks a rigorous back-and-forth before approving the project, which Bogue said he sees as a benefit, versus a more open crowdfunding platform, like Indiegogo.</p>
<p>To that end, Bogue and company seem to have an answer for every question and concern. Is 3Doodler toxic? Not any worse than a glue gun. How much plastic do you need? One foot produces about 11 feet of doodling. Does it leave a mark if you use it on a wall? Give us a second &#8230; yup, it does.</p>
<p>But now that they need to make nearly 20,000 3Doodlers &#8212; and likely many more &#8212; what will happen? Bogue insisted he&#8217;s not the least bit worried. &#8220;These are small numbers for factories; normally these things are hundreds of thousands of units,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We will never exceed what we&#8217;re able to do produce and supply.&#8221;</p>
<p>The real charm of having all this demand, Bogue said, is connecting directly with people who want his product, and involving them in its development. For instance, due to Kickstarter feedback, the 3Doodler handle is now planned to include a flat side so it won&#8217;t roll around.</p>
<p>&#8220;To be able to do product development so instantaneously &#8212; it&#8217;s just fantastic,&#8221; Bogue said. &#8220;We get to build a community for a product before we get it into people&#8217;s hands.&#8221;</p>

<p>Plus, &#8220;The Road We&#8217;ve Traveled&#8221; video was posted right to YouTube upon its release.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see how it will be received, and if it will work. The Washington Post is calling it a &#8220;docu-ganda,&#8221; noting that it cost $345,000.</p>

<p>It seems Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, the Don Quixote twins of the digital age, have tilted at yet another legal windmill unsuccessfully.</p>
<p>So now, after losing another court challenge to overturn a previous court challenge, they&#8217;ll <em>have</em> to settle for $65 million.</p>
<p>Actually, $100 million, which is how much shares in Facebook have appreciated since the pair and also Divya Narendra settled with the social networking giant.</p>
<p>Said the <a href="http://www.ca9.uscourts.gov/datastore/opinions/2011/04/11/08-16745.pdf">ruling from the U.S. Circuit of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit</a>, in part:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The Winklevosses are not the first parties bested by a competitor who then seek to gain through litigation what they were unable to achieve in the marketplace. And the courts might have obliged, had the Winklevosses not settled their dispute and signed a release of all claims against Facebook. With the help of a team of lawyers and a financial advisor, they made a deal that appears quite favorable in light of recent market activity. For whatever reason, they now want to back out. Like the district court, we see no basis for allowing them to do so. At some point, litigation must come to an end. That point has now been reached.</p></blockquote>
<p><em>The end?</em> Say it ain&#8217;t so! BoomTown, for one, will miss those big lugs.</p>
<p>Not so much Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, especially since the pair allege the tech wunderkind stole the idea for the start-up while a student at Harvard University.</p>
<p>After much legal mishegas, they got $20 million and 1.25 million shares at a price of $8.88 each.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s more than enough, said court to the the Winklevii&#8211;it&#8217;s their eternal nickname in Silicon Valley now&#8211;and they can&#8217;t back out of a settlement they made in 2004.</p>
<p>As for the specifics, the three-judge panel struck down every Winklevoss argument:</p>
<p>- They said the terms of the Facebook deal introduced after mediation were typical.</p>
<p>- They said Winklevii should have been sophisticated enough to understand valuation.</p>
<p>- They said Winklevii couldn&#8217;t use the sealed mediation settlement documents to argue their case.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s true, but it&#8217;s also sad to see it all over, since all the litigiousness between Zuckerberg and the Olympic rowing brothers has been so dramatic that it was the subject of the almost Oscar-winning movie, &#8220;The Social Network.&#8221;</p>
<p>But maybe they can go to the Supreme Court! One can dream!</p>
<p>And with their latest loss and all the Google machinating against Facebook, who&#8217;s up for a sequel: &#8220;Geek Wars: The Empire and the Vii Strike Back.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a statement, Colin Stretch, deputy general counsel of Facebook said: &#8220;We appreciate the Ninth Circuit&#8217;s careful consideration of this case and are pleased the court has ruled in Facebook’s favor.&#8221;</p>

<p>Netflix Inc. on Friday made the most expensive entry in the gold rush, saying it had cut a deal to produce a new drama starring Oscar winner Kevin Spacey on its Internet service. But companies like Yahoo Inc., AOL Inc. and Hulu LLC are also ramping up their efforts to secure original Web productions, investing more dollars in Web shows.</p>
<p>Hulu, an Internet venture focused on distributing traditional TV shows, recently hired a former movie executive to develop more original programs, according to people familiar with the matter. Next up on Hulu&#8217;s slate: &#8220;The Confession,&#8221; an action thriller in five- to seven-minute episodes that stars former &#8220;24&#8243; star Kiefer Sutherland. It is scheduled to premiere March 28.</p>

<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Oscar.png"><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Oscar.png" alt="" title="Oscar" width="132" height="98" class="alignright size-full wp-image-3834" /></a>The movie won prizes for best film editing, best original score and best adapted screenplay. But its honorees spent their speeches complimenting each other rather than playing homage to their inspiration in Palo Alto. And no Winklevii appeared in person, despite how good the litigious twins might have looked in tuxes.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Social Network&#8221; had also been nominated for best actor (Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg), best cinematography, best director (David Fincher) and best sound mixing.</p>
<p>&#8220;The King&#8217;s Speech&#8221; was the big winner of the night, taking four Academy Awards, including best picture.</p>

<p>Fans can tweet and Facebook post their way into the pre-show ABC red-carpet coverage by asking questions of <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/theacademy">@TheAcademy</a> on Twitter or going to the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/TheAcademy">TheAcademy Facebook page</a>. A start-up called <a href="http://www.oscars.org/press/pressreleases/2011/20110222b.html">Mass Relevance</a> is helping filter the questions for hosts Robin Roberts, Tim Gunn, Krista Smith and Maria Menounos.</p>
<p>(Facebook itself, which often hosts its own red carpet live chats for similar events, will not have a company presence at the Oscars.)</p>

<p>In a bold and definitive move, AOL is paying $315 million, mostly in cash, to buy the Huffington Post, one of the Web&#8217;s most prominent news and opinion sites.</p>
<p>As part of the deal, Huffington Post co-founder Arianna Huffington (pictured here)&#8211;who was derided by some when she co-founded the left-leaning site in 2005 with investor and well-known communications exec Kenneth Lerer&#8211;will become president and editor in chief of the Huffington Post Media Group within AOL.</p>
<p>The deal was signed late this afternoon, and the board of directors of each company and shareholders of the privately held Huffington Post have approved the transaction.</p>
<p>In an exclusive video interview BoomTown conducted earlier today in Dallas, just before Super Bowl XLV, both Armstrong and Huffington were jovial that the whirlwind deal, begun in November, actually worked out so quickly.</p>
<p>Perhaps giddy, they hit upon a common motto:</p>
<p>&#8220;One plus one equals 11.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Get it? </em> One and one next to each other is the number 11!</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s move on, shall we?</p>
<p>AOL said it is expected to close in the late-first or early-second quarter of 2011.</p>
<p>Once culminated, it will put Huffington in charge of all AOL content and other properties, including well-known names such as Engadget, Moviefone, MapQuest and TechCrunch.</p>
<p>She said she plans to move to New York from Los Angeles, although she will also maintain her longtime Brentwood home there.</p>
<p>And content for all these sites will be integrated deeply into the Huffington Post, giving it a huge new infusion of editorial material.</p>
<p>More to the point, the flashy acquisition&#8211;which essentially came together in less than two weeks in January&#8211;will become the linchpin of AOL CEO Tim Armstrong&#8217;s aggressive, if risky, strategy to focus the long-troubled company as a content and advertising powerhouse.</p>
<p>For AOL, the deal gives it a popular branded site that is very good at generating lots of page views and impressions very efficiently&#8211;which is the company&#8217;s whole thrust these days.</p>
<p>That means lots more ad inventory to sell and an injection of content talent, giving AOL the scale it desperately needs.</p>
<p>The move also obviously gives AOL a much-needed editorial identity and cohesion, which it doesn&#8217;t really have.</p>
<p>In fact, many think AOL needs a rallying point to bring clarity to its hodgepodge of recent acquisitions that all center on the notion that a strong company has yet to emerge in the premium content space.</p>

<p>While it all makes for a riveting narrative by the charming Armstrong, AOL still has not delivered the business turnaround promised after its spinoff from Time Warner in 2009.</p>
<p>Wall Street, which has given Armstrong a lot of rope, has become more impatient of late to see results&#8211;especially more robust increases in its display advertising business, as its access business dies off&#8211;after AOL spun off from Time Warner in 2009.</p>
<p>In its quarterly report last week, AOL reported earnings of 61 cents a share on revenue of $596 million.</p>
<p>But, as <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110202/aols-ad-turnaround-still-isnt-here-yet/">MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka</a> wrote:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The bigger picture is that Armstrong&#8217;s turnaround is still in progress. Ad revenue was down 29 percent in the last quarter, although that number is worse than it looks. A big chunk of the decline comes from moves AOL has intentionally made that will cut revenue in the short run in return for more profitable sales down the road.</p>
<p>A more representative data set for Armstrong are his display ad sales, which are down 14 percent overall and eight percent in the U.S..</p>
<p>The bad news is that the rest of the Web ad industry is well into rebound mode; the good news is that AOL has trained Wall Street to expect numbers like these. If you&#8217;re waiting to see positive sales numbers, Armstrong said during AOL’s earnings call this morning, wait until the second half of this year.</p></blockquote>
<p>In any case, the move is a good one for the Huffington Post since it will vault it to the next level of growth.</p>
<p>Other companies, such as Yahoo and NBC Universal, had looked at the company as a purchase target, and many expected it to eventually sell out to a larger company.</p>
<p>Sources close to the Huffington Post said that that outcome seemed the most likely, and the recent expansion of the site and its audience made it a good time to do a deal now.</p>
<p>Talks with Yahoo last year went nowhere, sources said, but Armstrong was not as slow to act.</p>
<p>Indeed, the actual deal happened quickly, said Armstrong and Huffington in a video interview with BoomTown earlier today (<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/aols-tim-armstrong-and-huffpos-arianna-huffington-talk-about-deal-touchdown-from-super-bowl/">which you can see here</a>).</p>
<p>The pair started talking in early November of last year at the Quadrangle Conference in New York and continued their discussions through the holidays.</p>
<p>Armstrong made the official offer to Huffington by phone in January, while she was at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and he was snowed in in New York.</p>
<p>Five time multiple to the Huffington Post&#8217;s upward of $60 million in expected revenue for the coming year, and nearly 10 times the $31 million for 2010, the offer was accepted quickly.</p>
<p>AOL used cash for $300 million of the purchase and $15 million in stock for the rest.</p>
<p>&#8220;The idea of turning a fire hose of traffic onto our content made enormous sense,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;Everything is changing so fast, it seemed like the time was right.&#8221;</p>
<p>An IPO was also considered for the Huffington Post, sources said. But since the site only recently moved into profitability&#8211;although barely&#8211;such an event would have been farther out.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s despite the fact that the Huffington Post has seen fast-growing traffic and influence, spurred in part by Huffington&#8217;s larger-than-life persona in both the mainstream media and blogosphere.</p>
<p>The wide-ranging site&#8211;which has added a number of content areas in recent years beyond its flagship political offering&#8211;currently has almost 26 million unique monthly visitors, according to recent stats, moving in close range to established news organizations such as the New York Times.</p>
<p>That kind of success seemed unlikely when the Huffington Post launched on May 9, 2005, positioning itself as as a liberal counterweight to the popular right-leaning Drudge Report.</p>
<p>But the Huffington Post&#8217;s heady mix of celebrity bloggers, personality and voice, as well as aggressive curation of links from other sites, quickly caught on.</p>
<p>To fund its efforts, the New York-based online media company has raised $37 million from angel investors such as Lerer&#8211;the largest individual shareholder, followed closely by Huffington&#8211;and venture firms such as Greycroft Partners, Softbank Capital and Oak Investment Partners.</p>
<p>The growth has not been without controversy around issues such as lack of payments to bloggers who contribute and accusations that the site uses too much content from other Web sources when linking.</p>
<p>And Huffington herself has also been a lightning rod, which has been both positive and negative for the site.</p>
<p>But, there is no question she is one of the Web&#8217;s most prominent players, along with writing books, appearing on television frequently and being a fixture at high-profile events in New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.</p>
<p>That includes a never-ending panoply of parties that feature a potent mix of movie stars, corporate poo-bahs, glad-handing politicians and lots of journalists from all over the media.</p>
<p>In fact, full disclosure, I was at one of those parties this past weekend for actor Colin Firth and others involved in the making of the Oscar-nominated film &#8220;The King&#8217;s Speech.&#8221; (Apropos of nothing, actor Helena Bonham Carter is as smart as you would expect, but much more delicate.)</p>
<p>As part of the AOL deal, CEO Eric Hippeau&#8211;who has been integral to professionalizing the business and will be joining Lerer Ventures&#8211;and Chief Revenue Officer Greg Coleman will leave the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>Ironically, Coleman was replaced by Armstrong as head of ad sales at AOL after he took over as CEO. Coleman got a big payout and will now apparently get another.</p>
<p>But the rest of the 200 Huffington Post employees are moving over to AOL with Huffington, who Armstrong hopes will be the company&#8217;s ace in the content hole going forward.</p>
<p>There are likely to be changes to come too at AOL, within weeks, especially in its content-side management and site staffs.</p>
<p>AOL provided some quotes in support of the deal from prominent Internet figures who know Huffington well.</p>
<p>&#8220;Arianna is one of the preeminent authors and editors of our time, and Tim has a remarkable track record of business success,&#8221; said Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. &#8220;Bringing them together creates tremendous potential for AOL.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said:</p>
<p>&#8220;Editorial vision and leadership are essential in order to transmute our shared cacophony of voices into a valuable dialogue. Arianna&#8217;s expertise, empathy, and entrepreneurial enthusiasm forms a kind of alchemy turning mere words and phrases into powerful expressions of humanity.&#8221;</p>

<p>AOL has agreed to purchase The Huffington Post for $315 million, approximately $300 million of which will be paid in cash funded from cash on hand. The Huffington Post is privately owned by its two cofounders, as well as a group of investors. The proposed transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including receipt of government approvals. The boards of directors of each company and shareholders of The Huffington Post have approved the transaction. The transaction is expected to close in the late first- or early second-quarter 2011.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>&#8220;The Social Network,&#8221; the movie based on the story of the founding of Facebook, was nominated for eight Academy Awards this morning.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2131" title="SocialNetworkmovie" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/SocialNetworkmovie-150x135.png" alt="" width="150" height="135" />The movie was nominated for best picture, while Jesse Eisenberg was nominated for best actor for his portrayal of Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, David Fincher for best director and Aaron Sorkin for adapted screenplay.</p>
<p>We probably won&#8217;t be seeing the famously underdressed Zuckerberg in a tux anytime soon. Given the film was unauthorized and took liberties with all-too-recent history, it&#8217;s highly unlikely he would attend the awards show. But Zuckerberg has had more of a sense of humor about the movie than might be expected&#8211;he rented out a local theater so he and his staff could watch the film on opening day, and has said in interviews that the creators did get his hoodies and T-shirts right, if nothing else.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Social Network&#8221; was also picked as a finalist for the Academy Award in cinematography, film editing, original score and sound mixing.</p>
<p>But it wasn&#8217;t the most-lauded film of the morning. &#8220;The King&#8217;s Speech&#8221; had 12 Oscar nominations and &#8220;True Grit&#8221; had 10.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Social Network&#8221; has already won <a href="http://www.goldenglobes.org/nominations/">Golden Globes</a> for best picture (drama), best director, best screenplay and best original score, as well as a <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110108/film-critics-dont-just-like-the-social-network-they-love-it/">pile of film critics&#8217; awards</a>.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Tuesday will announce this year&#8217;s Oscar nominations, which are expected to include the Hollywood version of the founding of Facebook, &#8220;<a href="http://www.thesocialnetwork-movie.com/">The Social Network</a>.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The Social Network&#8221; racked up awards in earlier film competitions, but the Oscars of course are the big show. The Academy Awards ceremony is Feb. 27.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2713" title="Oscarnomsstream" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/Oscarnomsstream-275x158.png" alt="" width="193" height="111" />For those who want to watch along at home, the nominations <a href="http://oscar.go.com/nominations">Web cast starts at 5:30 am PT</a> on Tuesday, with the contenders in the 10 big categories announced at 5:38.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Bachelor&#8221; host Chris Harrison, Entertainment Weekly&#8217;s Dave Karger, AMPAS boss Tom Sherak and 2010 Best Supporting Actress winner Mo&#8217;Nique have been commissioned to wake up early and make reading a list of names slightly more entertaining.</p>
<p>Tuesday&#8217;s live show is being put on by Livestream, ABC and the Academy. If you want to catch the big show later this month, you&#8217;ll have to tune into actual broadcast TV, though the <a href="http://oscar.go.com/">Oscar Web site</a> will have some red carpet and behind-the-scenes stuff.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Social Network&#8221; won best picture (drama), best director, screenplay and original score at this year&#8217;s <a href="http://www.goldenglobes.org/nominations/">Golden Globes</a>, adding to a <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110108/film-critics-dont-just-like-the-social-network-they-love-it/">pile of film critics awards</a>.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re in the mood tomorrow to live stream something more serious (not that honoring a fictionalized version of Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s college indiscretions is light fare), President Obama&#8217;s 2011 State of the Union address is Tuesday evening. Starting at 6 pm PT, Obama&#8217;s speech will play <a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/state-of-the-union-2011">live on the White House Web site</a> alongside charts, graphs and other content coordinated with the subject matter.</p>

<p>Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is certainly in the midst of a media bonanza.</p>
<p>Aside from all the heat over its <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110102/by-the-numbers-goldman-sachs-buddies-up-with-facebook">recent investment whatever with Goldman Sachs</a>, the young entrepreneur has been touted on CBS&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101206/viral-video-the-whole-fuddy-duddy-60-minute-zuckerberg-interview">&#8220;60 Minutes&#8221;</a> and been selected <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101215/glassy-eyed-zuckerberg-is-time-person-of-the-year">Time magazine&#8217;s</a> Person of the Year.</p>
<p>Oh, yes, and that movie&#8211;&#8221;The Social Network&#8221;&#8211;which you just know is going to win some Oscars on February 27.</p>
<p>Now CNBC has just aired a documentary on the huge social networking site, titled&#8211;appropriately&#8211;<a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/39618344">&#8220;The Facebook Obsession.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>There is no new interview with Zuckerberg, and it&#8217;s essentially the same story about the Silicon Valley wunderkind, told yet again. But all the old video clips and photos collected all together on another television show are nice.</p>
<p>Also, I always enjoy the Winklevii spouting off hambone arguments about why they are owed more than $65 million for Zuckerberg&#8217;s kneecapping of them back at Harvard University.</p>
<p>And, in a blink-and-you&#8217;ll-miss-me appearance, I also make a showing, apparently as the grumpy one.</p>
<p>But I did not see it, as CNBC did not deign to post the entire report online, as &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; so kindly did.</p>
<p>CNBC did do a preview and provide some clips, which are embedded below, as well the the much funnier Jon Stewart take on it all on &#8220;The Daily Show,&#8221; titled &#8220;The Anti-Social Network&#8221;:</p>

<p>Along with Eisenberg&#8217;s Best Actor nod for the Golden Globe Awards&#8211;which take place in mid-January and is often a harbinger for the Oscars&#8211;writer Aaron Sorkin got a nomination for Best Screenplay, David Fincher nabbed one for Best Director, and Andrew Garfield and Armie Hammer each scored for Best Supporting Actor.</p>
<p>The film itself, in a key category, got a nomination for Best Motion Picture in the drama category.</p>
<p>Maybe a sequel is in order?</p>

<p>While the news has been be out there for a month, Miramax officially confirmed this morning that former News Corp. exec Mike Lang was named CEO of the Hollywood movie company.</p>
<p>What will be interesting about that for digital content players will be to see exactly what the man who was deeply involved in deals to buy the Myspace social networking site and also create the Hulu premium video service will do with Miramax&#8217;s rich trove of more than 700 award-winning films, including &#8220;Shakespeare in Love&#8221; and &#8220;Pulp Fiction,&#8221; in its movie library.</p>
<p>Lang left his post as EVP of business development and strategy at Fox Entertainment, including its film studio, broadcast network, sports and cable channel, earlier this year.</p>
<p>BoomTown spoke to him last night about his new job, which came after he advised the group that finally won Miramax&#8211;Filmyard Holdings.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are trying to take this company to the next level by exploring not only our traditional options, but our digital ones,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Miramax will not be aggressive in making new movies, but in taking advantage of the sequel rights it has to a number of hits, as well as the existing movies, which include four of the last 15 Best Picture Oscar winners.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our strategy is still emerging, but we want to exploit our assets in a variety of ways,&#8221; said Lang, who noted that could include everything from subscription deals with online video services, such as Netflix and Amazon, to digital content lockers in the cloud.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want people to be able to access our content across multiple medias,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;ll take any payment, of course, but we also have to be smart about how we do these things.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lang, who has always had a foot in both worlds, said he thinks that digital media could develop similarly to the way traditional media has.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no reason to think that digital will not emulate older media, with different windows in which subscribers watch content,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>But, said Lang, he also thinks there is still life in physical media, such as Blu-ray players.</p>
<p>Since the deal just closed with former Miramax owner Disney, there are no employees yet for the Santa Monica, Calif.-based company.</p>
<p>But once he staffs up, Langs said he hopes to present a different picture of Hollywood to the digerati than the more typical wary hostility.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our goal really is we want to send a signal that we are a different company,&#8221; said Lang. &#8220;Not only about digital, but in being an innovative company.&#8221;</p>

<p>Lang, 45, most recently served as a consultant to Filmyard in its acquisition of Miramax. Prior to that, he was EVP, Business Development and Strategy at Fox Entertainment, responsible for strategic initiatives across News Corp.’s entertainment assets, including Fox’s film studio, broadcast network, sports and cable channels. Lang played key roles in the acquisition of MySpace and the formation of the MySpace Music joint venture, and he led the creation of Hulu, with major broadcast partners. In addition, Lang was involved in Fox’s mobile, digital and video game initiatives. He joined Fox in 2004.</p>
<p>Prior to Fox, Lang served as a consultant on media-related investments. In the late &#8217;90s, he was a founding executive of Z.com. Lang began his career at The Walt Disney Company in Strategic Planning. Lang earned his MBA with high distinction at Harvard Business School and he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Claremont McKenna College.</p></blockquote>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101002/would-that-the-real-mark-zuckerberg-talked-as-much-as-the-facebook-movie-mark-zuckerberg/">Facebook movie</a> might have performed slightly below box office expectations last weekend for Sony (SNE) movie unit Columbia Pictures, but it certainly has invaded the mainstream zeitgeist.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not much of a surprise, given the relentless marketing campaign by the makers of &#8220;The Social Network,&#8221; which opened wide last Friday. It has garnered <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101001/the-facebook-movie-sorry-mark-but-they-like-it-they-really-like-it-plus-the-taiwanesed-version/">terrific critical acclaim</a>.</p>
<p>Still, BoomTown was quite surprised to see a mention of the film on one of my favorite celebrity sites, TMZ.com.</p>
<p>Of course, because it is gossip-saturated, TMZ featured it as one of its naughty regular features called &#8220;Who&#8217;d You Rather?&#8221;</p>
<p><em>As in</em>&#8230;well, you get the point.</p>
<p>This time they pitted Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg against the Winklevoss twins in a <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2010/10/01/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-winklevoss-twins-social-network/">&#8220;Facebook Fight.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>&#8220;As part of the movie &#8216;The Social Network,&#8217; twin brothers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss claim their Harvard [University] classmate Mark Zuckerberg stole their idea and created what is now this little website called Facebook,&#8221; TMZ wrote.</p>
<p><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2010/10/wink.jpg" alt="" title="wink" width="380" height="560" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-34902" /></p>
<p>Also surprising, as you can see from the screenshot above, given what hunks of dudeness the Winklevii clearly are, is that Zuckerberg seems to be attracting one-third of the votes compared with their two-thirds.</p>
<p>And since there are two of them, the billionaire social networking wunderkind could be considered tied with the brothers!</p>
<p>Sweet justice after the slamming the Winklevii have been giving Zuckerberg in the media of late, even though they had signed a confidentiality agreement after their first $65 million settlement with him?</p>
<p>The Winklevii are trying to have that overturned and are inexplicably going for more, of course, which should keep the themes of the movie resonating for a while.</p>
<p>That will also be true if &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; garners some award nominations, especially the Oscar.</p>
<p>Also interesting will be to see if the movie will perform well this weekend or will drop off. It&#8217;s so far proved popular in the big cities on the coasts and in Silicon Valley, but now it has to go wide to make some real dough.</p>
<p>But, for sure, it will be on television eventually. Today, the FX cable network said it had bought the broadcast premiere rights to the movie.</p>

<p>Because this is a big CEO search in Silicon Valley, naturally the Hewlett-Packard board turned to star headhunter Jim Citrin of Spencer Stuart for help in finding the next leader for the tech giant.</p>
<p>He should not have to look far, since sources close to the situation said it is likely an internal candidate will be chosen over a more high-profile outsider.</p>
<p>The reason? As Maverick&#8217;s motto in the hit movie &#8220;Top Gun&#8221; goes: The need for speed.</p>
<p>As in speed at moving the focus at HP (HPQ) away from the scandal around the controversial departure of CEO Mark Hurd, his <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100917/please-hurd-dont-hammer-em/">move to rival Oracle</a> (ORCL) and the ensuing lawsuits, and back to the business of, well, business.</p>
<p>That would be best served by putting in place someone who knows the company well. And since the major divisions of HP are so huge that they could be considered companies unto themselves, these are very seasoned and experienced execs.</p>
<p>At the tippy-top of that list is Todd Bradley, who runs its Personal Systems Group and is also known as the man who bought Palm, the smartphone maker, which he once ran. (He is pictured above, headed for work on the 101.)</p>
<p>While making Palm&#8217;s technology a success for HP is a big risk, the move shows a nice proclivity for boldness. In addition, he is well known and well liked in Silicon Valley, even though he always deftly sidles away from BoomTown whenever I approach (which is, to be honest, also a very good instinct).</p>
<p>Also on the very short list, although much less mentioned than Bradley: Vyomesh Joshi, who runs HP&#8217;s giant printer business.</p>
<p>One minus: Joshi&#8211;an incredibly affable man known as VJ&#8211;has also been a longtime director on the worser-board-than-HP at Yahoo (YHOO). So, in my mind, he&#8217;d have some&#8211;in the immortal words of Ricky Ricardo&#8211;<em>&#8217;splaining</em> to do.</p>
<p>And while Ann Livermore, who runs the enterprise business, has been mentioned many times in the past for a bigger role at HP, she remains, most sources say, a longshot. Here it&#8217;s kind of like that old Oscar clich&eacute;&#8211;being nominated is the real honor.</p>
<p>Of course, there are plenty of outsiders who are certainly solid selections and some wilder ideas the board could consider&#8211;my pick would be Google (GOOG) President of Global Sales Operations and Business Development Nikesh Arora or Juniper (JNPR) CEO Kevin Johnson.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s clear an internal candidate would settle the waters sooner than later.</p>
<p>And, despite internal rivalry, it would also prevent an exodus of these execs, which is the last thing HP needs right now.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s just a post on the popular <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2010/09/can-social-network-go-all-the-way/">entertainment blog &#8220;Deadline Hollywood.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>But it&#8217;s a clear indication the makers of the movie about the origins of Facebook are gunning for maximum attention and Oscar buzz with only a few weeks to go before its debut.</p>
<p>In fact, awards columnist Pete Hammond was pretty much channeling the marketing plan of Oscar-winning producer Scott Rudin for &#8220;The Social Network,&#8221; which has its premiere in New York on September 24 and its wide rollout on October 1.</p>
<p>Rudin&#8211;the volcano of a producer about whom I would like to see a biopic like the one he is sticking it to Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg with&#8211;has apparently been personally inviting every online chatterbox (not me!) and their mother to screenings of the film from the Sony (SNE) movie unit, Columbia Pictures, in recent weeks.</p>
<p>Writes Hammond:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>It&#8217;s a smart strategy but even without a personal invitation from one of the film&#8217;s producers this is already the current must-see movie on every Oscar watchers list. As an example of that, one blogger actually got on a plane from Toronto to New York just to see Social Network, then headed immediately back to Toronto. His subsequent review was a rave declaring it the one to beat for Best Picture (a little premature on that I think). That&#8217;s just one example of the praise now starting to hit the Internet from Hitfix to Slashfilm to Chud and all cyber points inbetween.</p></blockquote>
<p>A little premature perhaps, but it seems to have worked with Hammond:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>I saw it at the first opportunity on Monday and would have to say fairly objectively that The Social Network is Sony’s best shot at Best Picture in years, a lock for Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards. And most importantly, Oscar nominations in every major category including Director for David Fincher, Writing for Aaron Sorkin, lead actor for Jesse Eisenberg (playing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg), Supporting Actor for  both Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross&#8217;  score, editing and so on. It also looks like it will be a major box office hit, hitting a nerve with the young demographic that are on the front lines of moviegoers&#8230;</p>
<p>Despite its high-tech bones, what Fincher and Sorkin have managed to do is tell a time-honored very human story, a social document for a generation that has as much relevance now as movies like On The Waterfront, Network, All The President&#8217;s Men, and The Graduate did in their time.</p></blockquote>
<p>Expect more of the same from those who get sucked up into the marketing machine for &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; in the next weeks, even though it appears it will be devastating to the real-life version of its main subject, Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>And really, really unfair, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100913/the-social-network-is-just-as-brutal-as-mark-zuckerberg-feared">according to MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka</a>, by taking one aspect of his personality&#8211;awkward arrogance or perhaps arrogant awkwardness&#8211;and twisting it into a much deeper malevolence.</p>
<p>I have no doubt in my mind that Zuckerberg pulled an epic geek sandbagging on the clueless Winklevoss twins by promising to work on their goofy concept for a social networking site at Harvard University, then not doing so and working on his own ideas instead.</p>
<p>And, for sure, he had a painfully typical start-up falling-out with his own early partners.</p>
<p>But let&#8217;s get real here&#8211;they all got paid off plenty for being present at the creation of something they themselves <em>never</em> could have created.</p>
<p>Does anyone honestly believe the Winklevii were capable of making Facebook, or any reasonable facsimile, any more than Zuckerberg was capable of rowing in the Olympics?</p>
<p>While hitting some right notes about Zuckerberg&#8217;s mannerisms&#8211;conversations with him can be very perplexing&#8211;the Mark of &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; is largely fictional.</p>

<p>Certainly, he has some glaring faults (and so do I!).</p>
<p>But they are no worse that other tech leaders&#8217;, from Bill Gates of Microsoft (MSFT) to Steve Jobs of Apple (AAPL) to Silicon Valley&#8217;s own twins, Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>Interestingly, the night before what turned out to be a very <a href="http://d8.allthingsd.com/speakers/mark-zuckerberg/">difficult onstage interview</a> at the eighth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in June, at a dinner just south of Los Angeles, Zuckerberg fretted to me about the film.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s what a lot of people will think I am like, because it&#8217;s a movie and that has impact on their perceptions,&#8221; he said with a lot of concern in his voice.</p>
<p>I pooh-poohed his complaints and told him not to worry about it too much.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s <em>just</em> a movie,&#8221; I said. &#8220;No one believes what they see at the movies anymore.&#8221;</p>
<p>But as this film chugs along&#8211;gaining Oscar velocity right onto the stage of the Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard on February 27, 2011&#8211;I can now see Zuckerberg might have been right all along.</p>

<p>Apparently, the review is in&#8211;only one review, so far&#8211;but it&#8217;s a corker.</p>
<p>Although &#8220;The Social Network,&#8221; the Columbia Pictures movie about the origins of Facebook, is not coming out until its premiere at the New York Film Festival in October, Scott Foundas, a reviewer for its publication, Film Comment, is <a href="http://www.filmlinc.com/nyff/2010/revenge-of-the-nerd">loving it in a piece in the September issue</a>.</p>
<p>The magazine operates under the auspices of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, which throws the film event where <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100625/viral-video-scary-teaser-trailer-makes-upcoming-facebook-movie-seem-like-a-slasher-film/">&#8220;The Social Network&#8221;</a> is debuting.</p>
<p>After a lot of film reviewer throat-clearing about not using social networking tools, harrumphing on its global implications and then bizarrely boiling Facebook down to being &#8220;born of a romantic rejection,&#8221; Foundas writes in the review titled &#8220;Revenge of the Nerd&#8221;:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>This is very rich material for a movie on such timeless subjects as power and privilege, and such intrinsically 21st-century ones as the migration of society itself from the real to the virtual sphere&#8211;and David Fincher&#8217;s &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; is big and brash and brilliant enough to encompass them all&#8230;.</p>
<p>Adapted by &#8220;The West Wing&#8221; creator Aaron Sorkin from Ben Mezrich&#8217;s nonfiction best-seller &#8220;The Accidental Billionaires,&#8221; &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; was one of those &#8220;buzz&#8221; scripts that seemed to be on everyone&#8217;s lips in Hollywood for the past couple of years, and it&#8217;s easy to understand why. The writing is razor-sharp and rarely makes a wrong step, compressing a time-shifting, multi-character narrative into two lean hours, and, perhaps most impressively, digests its big ideas into the kind of rapid-fire yet plausible dialogue that sounds like what hyper computer geeks might actually say (or at least wish they did): Quentin Tarantino crossed with Bill Gates.</p></blockquote>
<p>Oh, dear. <em>Oh, dear.</em> Now, I am beginning to feel bad for CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, because it looks like this film might even be Oscar-worthy for Columbia&#8217;s Sony (SNE) bosses.</p>
<p>But more:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>From a legal perspective, it’s a thorny case of he-said/he-said, though the movie is less concerned with assigning blame than with considering Zuckerberg’s precise degree of assholedom, or lack thereof&#8230;.But to the sure nervousness of the studio, and the potential discomfort of some viewers, Fincher and Sorkin chart a more treacherous course straight down the middle of Zuckerberg&#8217;s many contradictions, one in which there are no obvious winners or losers, good guys or bad&#8211;only a series of highly pressurized social (and genetic) forces.</p></blockquote>
<p>Oh, dear, a treacherous course, well charted.</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Lest I seem to suggest otherwise, I hasten to add that &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; is splendid entertainment from a master storyteller, packed with energetic incident and surprising performances (not least from Justin Timberlake as Napster founder Sean Parker, who’s like Zuckerberg’s flamboyant, West Coast id). It is a movie of people typing in front of computer screens and talking in rooms that is as suspenseful as any more obvious thriller. But this is also social commentary so perceptive that it may be regarded by future generations the way we now look to &#8220;Gatsby&#8221; for its acute distillation of Jazz Age decadence.</p></blockquote>
<p>Oh, dear, Gatsby, and back to fabulous. May I have the envelope, please&#8230;</p>
<p>What to do then?</p>
<p>Here are BoomTown&#8217;s five steps to reclaim the ground in this seemingly surefire Hollywood invasion of Silicon Valley.:</p>
<p><strong>1.)</strong> Even though he looked at me like I was tripping, I wasn&#8217;t kidding when I recently told Zuckerberg to attend the New York premiere. <em>With me!</em> (Elliot can come only if he keeps a lid on it.)</p>
<p>If Zuckerberg attends, he is the story, sucking the oxygen away from the movie itself, especially if he looks fly and laughs a lot.</p>
<p>A tux, going up to the actor who plays him and saying the resemblance is astonishing and general self-deprecation can go a long way.</p>
<p>Especially when you are the only one who ended up a soon-to-be billionaire, including the moviemakers and their bosses.</p>
<p><strong>2.)</strong> Throw a movie night at Facebook for the staff&#8211;and make it a double feature with the excellent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100817/catfish-the-other-facebook-movie-speaks-real-truths-about-the-social-network-plus-video">&#8220;Catfish,&#8221;</a> about a scammer on the social networking site.</p>
<p>Then, lead a discussion group about the fact versus fiction. Ignoring this film, especially if it is a hit, does not make its impact go away.</p>
<p>Invite the filmmakers and all the players from back then to talk too&#8211;<em>Winklevii alert</em>, but this time Zuck has security! To be sure, this is a risky one, given Zuckerberg&#8217;s sometime awkwardness in public.</p>
<p><strong>3.)</strong> Unveil all the original documents&#8211;and I mean <em>all</em>&#8211;about those years, making them available on Facebook for all to see. The Winklevoss case and others are settled now, so there seems little need to hide what was clearly a rocky start.</p>
<p>If Zuckerberg and Facebook truly believe in transparency, use the movie to get it all out there and be done with it.</p>
<p><strong>4.)</strong> The ignoring-it option seems only available to an island like Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs, who truly does not care what people think of him. On the other hand, Zuckerberg surely and clearly does.</p>

<p><strong>5.)</strong> After it&#8217;s all over, live well. It&#8217;s apparently the best revenge. (Also, at least &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; is going to be much more interesting than the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100823/boomtown-casts-the-google-movie-youre-welcome-hollywood/">Google (GOOG) Movie</a>.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>TiVo is the most famous third-party set-top box for your TV. The company popularized the idea of digital video recording and, in recent years, also has added to its devices the ability to deliver some Internet video content to the TV screen.</p>
<p>But TiVo is being squeezed. Cable and satellite companies now offer boxes with DVR capabilities. And other tech companies are rolling out competing set-top boxes to get Internet video to televisions.</p>

It is slimmer, has a slicker user interface and holds more recorded programming than earlier models—45 hours of high-definition programs, up from 20 hours in the prior model, the TiVo HD. A more expensive version of the Premiere, the XL, has the same new software and holds 150 hours of HD shows.</p>
<p>I have been testing the new Premiere, and it worked as advertised, with conventional cable programming and with the available Internet sources TiVo (TIVO) supports. But, in my tests, it showed some flaws and, in my view, it doesn&#8217;t go nearly far enough in tapping the Internet. </p>
<p>Like prior TiVos, I&#8217;d rate the Premiere as better than the standard cable-company-supplied boxes I&#8217;ve seen. But, if you already own a recent-model TiVo, I don&#8217;t believe the Premiere justifies an upgrade, unless you need the greater built-in storage.</p>
<p>The TiVo Premiere goes on sale Sunday at Best Buy (BBY) stores for $300, plus a monthly fee of $13, or an annual or lifetime payment plan ranging from $129 for a year of service to $399 for the life of the device. The Premiere XL costs $500, plus the same fees. Both will be available Monday at <a href="http://www.tivo.com/">tivo.com</a>.</p>
<p>TiVo calls the Premiere &#8220;the One Box,&#8221; because it better integrates regular TV and Internet content. However, it actually has no additional Internet services compared with recent TiVo models. It allows you to get movies, TV shows and videos from YouTube, Amazon (AMZN), Netflix (NFLX) and Blockbuster (BBI), which are available on competing set-top boxes. It also includes a number of online music and photo services.</p>
<p>The company says a couple of added Internet services will be available later this year. These include the Pandora streaming music service and a widget system displaying things like news, stock prices and Twitter updates. However, the widgets won&#8217;t allow you to interact with Twitter and won&#8217;t be viewable while you&#8217;re watching TV or Internet video. </p>
<p>The biggest changes in the new Premiere involve the user interface. The TiVo Central screens, where you find and manage recorded shows and other content, are now presented in high definition and wide screen. This allows more menus on a single screen. The screen containing your recorded shows is now called My Shows instead of Now Playing.</p>
<p>You also can now watch TV in a small window while you&#8217;re on the menu screens, and there is a 30-second skip button on the remote.</p>

<p>Also, a new Browse function lets you look for programming without typing search terms, by scrolling through colorful icons that include &#8220;collections&#8221; of related content, such as Oscar or Emmy winners.</p>
<p>Both Search and Browse now integrate regular TV shows with Internet content. If you start typing letters into the search box, TiVo will respond not only with TV shows that match, but with movies and TV shows that you can download from Web sources. You can also easily find YouTube clips related to a favorite show.</p>
<p>A new Discovery Bar of icons appears across the top of the Tivo Central screens. It&#8217;s filled with icons of TV shows and available Web content TiVo thinks you might like.</p>
<p>But there are some big downsides to the Premiere. You can&#8217;t watch videos on popular sites like Hulu (owed in part by News Corp., which owns The Wall Street Journal and its Web sites), <a href="http://www.cbs.com/">CBS.com</a>, blogs or news Web sites. This may be partly due to media-company restrictions, not TiVo&#8217;s shortcomings, but it means the Premiere omits vast sources of Internet video.</p>
<p>The new HD interface was slower than the old standard one in my tests, with frequent delays, even in scrolling through a list of recorded shows. TiVo says this is a bug being fixed.</p>
<p>In addition, I found the Discovery Bar a distraction, cluttering the menu screens, with no way to turn it off unless you revert to the old interface (a buried option.) This is partly because TiVo hopes to sell ads on the bar.</p>
<p>Finally, the new HD interface isn&#8217;t available when watching live TV. You have to constantly bounce between the new and old software designs.</p>
<p>All in all, TiVo Premiere looks incomplete. It seems more like a platform for a future set of offerings TiVo hopes one day to have, rather than a way to deliver new content right now.</p>

Or in other words: I&#8217;ll see your <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100309/viral-video-new-iron-man-2-trailer-with-57-percent-more-whiplash/">&#8220;Iron Man 2&#8243; trailer</a> and raise you a &#8220;Tron Legacy.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the official name of Disney&#8217;s (DIS) sequel to its 1982 classic, which may have been the first movie to imagine what living inside your computer would be like. </p>
<p>Now we no longer need to guess, since way too many of us are essentially doing this every day. But &#8220;Tron&#8221; still has a special resonance for Web nerds of a certain age&#8211;hence &#8220;Tron Guy,&#8221; one of the first viral video characters to break on YouTube&#8211;and Disney is hoping it can revive its appeal for the young-uns.</p>
<p>Hint to the Disney folks: It will be easier to get free promotion if you make the YouTube version of this embeddable. </p>
<p>Still, we&#8217;ll do our best: Here&#8217;s the newest &#8220;Tron&#8221; trailer, a vintage one for the original version (note that Oscar winner Jeff Bridges, who starred in the first movie, shows up in the new one as well), and Tron Guy himself, Jay Maynard.</p>

<p>This week: We dropped by the Gates Computer Science building at Stanford University for an interview with Pat Hanrahan, professor of computer science and electrical engineering, as well as chief technology officer at <a href="http://www.tableausoftware.com"><strong>Tableau</strong></a>, a business intelligence start-up with Ph.D level chops in data visualization.</p>

<p><strong>Why</strong>: Last Thursday, Tableau launched a public version of the data visualization product it sells to the likes of Microsoft (MSFT), eBay (EBAY) and Google (GOOG). Tableau Public is a free service aimed at journalists, bloggers and academics who want to create original, data-driven graphics similar to those from major news outlets.</p>
<p><strong>Where</strong>: tableausoftware.com (Web site); @tableau (Twitter); Seattle and San Francisco (analog places)</p>
<p><strong>Who else</strong>: Tableau competes directly with huge enterprise software companies like Oracle (ORCL), IBM (IBM) and SAP (SAP). Tableau Public, on the other hand, signals its entrance into a new market where the field is wide open.</p>

<h4 class="subhed">Five Stats You Won&#8217;t Find in His Facebook Profile</h4>
<p><strong>Worst Job Ever</strong>: I&#8217;ve been pretty lucky. I&#8217;ve had mostly good jobs. I guess the worst was when I worked in a paper mill in college. I&#8217;d be on fire duty, which meant standing around with a hose and doing nothing. That said, if you go a week in a paper mill without a fire, you are doing well. All that dust accumulates and practically becomes explosive.</p>
<p><strong>Geek Crush</strong>: Francis Crick, the molecular biologist. I got my Ph.D in biophysics, and he was one of the only physicists ever to be successful in biology. He also brought theory to biology at a time when it was unheard of, and I thought that was a really big thing. This was back in the late 1970s when it was basically impossible to be a theoretical biologist. I&#8217;m a big fan of the mixing of theory and practice. He kind of brought the two of those together.</p>
<p><strong>Gadget of the Moment</strong>: You know, I&#8217;m a little bit of a gadget guy, but I&#8217;m more of a maker type. I like electronics, mechanics, chemistry&#8211;lots of things. My favorite recent project was building a cat wheel. It&#8217;s like a hamster wheel, but giant, four feet in diameter. I&#8217;ve got a Bengal cat. He&#8217;s very energetic.</p>
<p><strong>Secret Fame</strong>: Pat has two technical Oscars for his founding work on the RenderMan software at Pixar.</p>
<p><strong>Secret Shame</strong>: He can&#8217;t sing or dance to save his life.</p>

<p>Pat grew up in Green Bay. Wisconsin made him a Ph.D chess champion. A self-taught programmer, now he&#8217;s a CS professor and entrepreneur.</p>

<h4 class="subhed">The Five Questions</h4>
<p class="question"><em>You say Tableau is in business intelligence, but what do you really do?</em></p>
<p>Well, Tableau&#8217;s center is really about answering questions with data. A lot of data visualization research is really about making pretty pictures, but we worked with psychologists and graphic designers to understand how people deal with visual data and process it. Let&#8217;s say you could answer a question by making a picture that shows the answer. If you want to know what the maximum selling product is, you make a picture where maximum stands out. If you want to know spatial distribution, you make a map. We create pictures that answer questions, but we do it for businesses that want to know things about their own metrics. It has been termed visual analysis&#8211;sort of doing a Q&#038;A with data and images.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Who is using it well?</em></p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been really surprised by how many businesses use the sorts of metrics that work well with Tableau. We sell to category managers at eBay, for instance. Google uses us a lot for managing its data centers. We are not really vertical at all. Tableau is useful for anyone who has data.</p>
<p>A really interesting example is our relationship with Xbox. They record all the game play and then offer data through us to their game developers so that the developers can see what the actual game play experience is like. When are people dying? Are players spending time where the developers think they should? Stuff like that.</p>
<p>It is really everything. Some churches use us to keep track of who is donating what on Sundays. Most of our users are the Excel user; maybe they have data, but not a way to visualize it. It&#8217;s amazing to me how quantitative so many people are.</p>
<p class="question"><em>So how does Tableau Public differ from your enterprise product?</em></p>
<p>Well, the market we&#8217;re going after right now is individual content producers who might want to put data online. The New York Times (NYT) is often held up as an example of these good graphics, but an individual blogger doesn&#8217;t have a huge graphics department.</p>

<p>We offer the service for free, with some limits on number of views, and if the graphics take off, then maybe we&#8217;ve earned a paying customer. Also, on the free version, the data is public. It&#8217;s good for us because we get exposure, and it&#8217;s good for others because they get free access to the technology.</p>
<p>We aren&#8217;t immediately concerned about making money with Tableau Public. We already have a robust business selling to other businesses, so we sort of came to the freemium model backwards of most start-ups.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Can you guys really compete with the likes of IBM, SAP and Oracle?</em></p>

<p>Well, one big reason we get our customers is the whole visual analysis thing that is at the core of what we do. It&#8217;s unique to us. We&#8217;re also really well known for being easy to use and easy to deploy. A lot of times, what happens in enterprise software, you get these monolithic, giant systems that can be clunky and painful to add new features to. This can be true especially in the analysis arena.</p>
<p>The Dallas Cowboys are a good example. The sales manager there would go to his data guy and say, &#8220;I want to know how many jerseys I sold yesterday.&#8221; And they&#8217;d start giving all these technical answers about the data cube not being connected to the servers and so on. He was sold on us because he could plug in a complex spreadsheet, and we could tell him that answer in a very concrete way in a reasonable amount of time. It all goes back to having that Q&#038;A with your data.</p>
<p class="question"><em>You are a professor of computer science and electrical engineering; you must have a pretty amazing early technology memory that turned you on to the sciences.</em></p>
<p>For me, it was just science in general, just being a nerd and a scientist. I remember when I bought my first chemistry set from a company now called Elemental Scientific. I remember that I was about eight or so, and most of the research I did was just so I would know what to buy. I saved up all my money and went to the store with my grandmother and came out with this giant box of retorts and flasks and all kinds of stuff. I had a great time the rest of the summer just doing reactions.</p>
<p>The other big thing with me and science was chess. I was the Wisconsin state chess champion in high school, and that is what taught me to really study things. I&#8217;ve always been more interested in ideas than technology I guess.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;ve ever visualized something in your head but couldn&#8217;t think of its name, you might appreciate a new method of online discovery: visual search. </p>

<p>This week, I tested forms of visual search from two companies that hold some serious clout when it comes to hunting around online&#8211;Google and Microsoft. Although Google has become our go-to site for looking anything up on the Internet, its searches are dense with text. Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search engine, which was introduced last spring, is marketed as a Google alternative that aims to return more useful query data on the first results page.</p>
<p>Both companies know there are times when text, alone, just won&#8217;t do. Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT) have long offered options for searching the Images section of almost any search term to find a visual representation of it. But now the companies are allowing visually minded users to scour through images to more efficiently pinpoint the picture or information they want. These new visual searches are a bit different. And they also differ from one another.</p>
<p>Users can use Google&#8217;s Image Swirl search to sift through some 200,000 queries of images. And Microsoft offers Bing Visual Search as a way of performing searches on images that are tagged with useful data. Google Image Swirl still requires you to input text search terms, but Bing Visual Search lets you select images the whole time, without typing search terms. The ability to search using images alone is also being explored, and a number of mobile apps make this possible, which I&#8217;ll briefly talk about in a bit.</p>

<p>Google&#8217;s Image Swirl, http://image-swirl.googlelabs.com/, is currently categorized by the company as a Google Labs project, meaning that it&#8217;s in an experimental stage. It lets users search for images in certain categories that, according to computer vision algorithms, look like they would fit into the search results. Unlike Google queries using the &#8220;Images&#8221; section, Image Swirl sorts results into several stacks of images, with the most relevant results on the top of each stack. This makes for less image repetition in results, compared with regular image searches.</p>
<p>These stacks of images come in handy in cases where one word has two meanings, so users can select the one that represents what they&#8217;re searching for. Image Swirl also can be used to discover images of a place or thing that you didn&#8217;t originally associate with the search term.</p>
<p>By clicking on the top image in a stack, users can see a diagram of the main image positioned in a center circle and related images connected by lines that resemble bicycle spokes. Selecting one image pulls it to the center of the circle and repositions its surrounding photos. A search for &#8220;Robert Downey, Jr.&#8221; displayed several stacks—each topped with different images of him. There was a stack of pictures of him dressed as different movie characters, one of him at movie premieres, and a stack of his mug-shot arrest photos. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Hometown Search</h5>
<p>Presumably because it&#8217;s an experiment, Image Swirl doesn&#8217;t cover a lot of topics. I typed &#8220;Allentown, PA,&#8221; the name of my hometown, into the Image Swirl search box and received a message that said my query wasn&#8217;t included in the demo.</p>
<p>Since computer vision algorithms can make mistakes, Image Swirl can pull up images that aren&#8217;t relevant to the intended search. My search for &#8220;George Washington Bridge&#8221; pulled up  photos of the  bridge at different times of the day from different angles, divided into stacks. But one photo was of a Marvel Comics character named G.W. Bridge. Another was of bikes on pavement, a photo from a Web site for &#8220;Bike Month NYC&#8221; that mentioned the bridge.</p>
<p>While Google&#8217;s Image Swirl works well as an image search engine, Bing Visual Search is a collection of 48 galleries of photos and is designed to be a data search engine by associating each image with specific data.</p>
<p>For example, a search for &#8220;Famous Directors&#8221; is sorted alphabetically. Each image displays data about the person it represents when you hover over it with a cursor. Steven Spielberg&#8217;s image text tells me he&#8217;s 63 years old, directed 26 films and won two Oscars, and that his highest grossing film was &#8220;Jurassic Park,&#8221; at $919.7 million. A list on the left side provides categories with which I can narrow the search results. In the case of the &#8220;Famous Directors&#8221; gallery, these categories include gender, country of origin, and what genre he or she is best known for directing.</p>
<p>Some of the Visual Search galleries include digital cameras, dog breeds, world leaders, top iPhone apps and yoga poses. Each has its own detailed description and left-side subcategories that can be selected for narrowing down the results. But these Bing Visual Search categories represent images only from sources that have teamed up with Bing, like Fox Sports, Billboard and the American Film Institute. Google searches a larger pool of data from Google Images, which crawls the entire Web.</p>
<p>The Bing Visual Search results have all been pre-sorted and tagged to associate with a search term. Bing Visual Search is especially helpful with product searches, since each image has a good deal of information associated with it, including price, product reviews and brand. Some items can even be purchased directly from these links.</p>
<p>After searching with either Google Image Swirl or Bing Visual Search, the final click on an item often takes users to a more text-based Web page, where people can dig deeper into the details of the searched item, like a plain, text search. But first seeing an image could help to narrow the field—or expand a search to include something else that wasn&#8217;t originally intended. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Augmented Reality</h5>
<p>For people looking to take visual search quite literally (without typing any text at all), mobile devices with built-in cameras can let people point and search in a different way from either Image Swirl or Visual Search.Thanks to the integration of augmented reality (AR)—a way of matching real-world photos with computer-generated images—into mobile apps, users can aim their device at something and the image can then be used to identify the subject, as well as details about it.</p>

<p>I tried three apps on Google&#8217;s Nexus One mobile device and Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone: Google Goggles, SnapTell and Layar. SnapTell retrieved much search data about two books I captured in photos.</p>
<p>Google Goggles is a visual-search application that works on phones running Google&#8217;s Android operating system. With Goggles, people could take photos of the outside of a restaurant and learn its name, menu or read customer reviews. Likewise, snapping a photo of a piece of art will return details like its title and artist, as well as a Web link to more information. Google says Goggles will be coming to other mobile platforms in the future. </p>
<p>This technology brings up a potential privacy issue: Could you some day take a photo of someone and then search for information on that person?</p>
<p>A Google spokesperson says this app has the ability to use facial recognition with Goggles, but hasn&#8217;t launched this feature because it hasn&#8217;t been built into an app that would provide real value for users. The spokesperson also cites &#8220;some important transparency and consumer-choice issues we need to think through.&#8221;</p>
<h5 class="subhed">A Walk With the Beatles</h5>
<p>SnapTell (<a href="http://snaptell.com/apps">http://snaptell.com/apps</a>) is another app that uses AR on Android devices as well as Apple&#8217;s iPhone. It allows you to snap a photo of a book, CD, videogame or DVD, and get information about it. Layar (http://layar.com) is an app that lets people point their Android devices at locations to get more information. You could see an on-screen visual of a completed structure by pointing the camera at a construction site, or look at a representation of the Beatles on Abbey Road by pointing your phone at the famous crosswalk.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a visual thinker and you work well by seeing illustrations of the things for which you search, Bing Virtual Search or Google Image Swirl might help. Or consider using an app with your mobile device that takes advantage of AR technology  if you want fast information about something while you&#8217;re on the go. As all of these products improve, they&#8217;ll include more categories and images to aid online explorations. </p>

<p>&#8220;Search and advertising, we are a small share&#8230;.It&#8217;s all about Google. They have share, we don’t have share.&#8221; <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/msft/download/transcripts/fy09/StrategicUpdate_Ballmer_Liddell_022409.doc">Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that back in February</a>, and according to <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2009/5/comScore_Releases_April_2009_U.S._Search_Engine_Rankings">the latest metrics from comScore</a> (SCOR), it&#8217;s as true today as it was then. Google (GOOG) grew its share of the search market once again in April, and once again, Microsoft (MSFT) did not. The search sovereign’s share rose to 64.2 percent in April from 63.7 percent in March and 61.6 percent from a year ago, according to new data from comScore. Its April query volume grew 45.5 percent, the fastest growth rate since October 2007. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s market share for the month topped out at 8.2 percent, down from 8.3 percent in March and 9.1 percent a year ago.</p>
<p><em>They have share, we don’t have share.</em> Truer words. How much longer will Ballmer have to utter them? We may find out today when <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090526/my-bing-a-ling/">he debuts Microsoft&#8217;s newest search offering</a> from the <strong>D7</strong> stage.</p>

<li>After another song from Jill Sobule and some introductory remarks, Walt welcomes Steve Ballmer to the stage. He&#8217;s drinking a massive iced-coffee, as if he really needs the caffeine &#8230;</li>
<li>Walt kicks things off with a question about the souring economy. Ballmer&#8217;s opinion of it is apparently more sober than most. Ballmer says this is a &#8220;different recession. A recession implies that you sort of go down and go up. In this case, I think this is money that&#8217;s just got to come out of the economy&#8230;.We&#8217;re really resetting the economy. Maybe we should think of today as normal and yesterday as the bluebird.&#8221; So how long will this continue, asks Walt. Ballmer says to think things will return to the good old days quickly is naive&#8230;.“Is this a 50-year phenomenon? I don&#8217;t think so. But it&#8217;s not going to be over in three months, either.&#8221;</li>
<li>So how does this affect your business? Ballmer says Microsoft (MSFT) is doing a lot of soul-searching and flattening out its business and cost base. &#8220;We&#8217;re shaking up the future product investment stream.&#8221; That said, he notes that the company continues to invest aggressively in R&amp;D. &#8220;We&#8217;re investing in areas where there&#8217;s room for improvement.&#8221; Interesting euphemism.</li>
<li>Referring to poll data, Walt notes Microsoft&#8217;s paltry share of the search market. &#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of distance between you and Google,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Is search the most important thing to you as CEO or are you more concerned with Windows, etc.?&#8221;  &#8220;Our foremost concern is great people,&#8221; says Ballmer. &#8220;I spend more of my time on talent than trying to be &#8216;the search guy.&#8217;&#8221; He refers to Microsoft&#8217;s &#8220;seven big things.&#8221; What are they? &#8220;I&#8217;ve got seven children, I love,&#8221; says Ballmer, referring to Microsoft&#8217;s various businesses. &#8220;Look, we&#8217;re obviously where we are in search and we want to do better&#8230;.We&#8217;re hoping to be one of the companies that moves the industry forward&#8230;.The PC business continues to be big, we&#8217;re going through an economic reset, but there&#8217;s still vibrance there.&#8221;</li>

<li>Walt refers to another slide about search&#8211;how consumers choose search. He notes that most choose search out of habit and because of the brand. Given that, how can Microsoft compete? We&#8217;re about to find out apparently. But first a video&#8230;</li>
<li>It&#8217;s a &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; parody&#8211; &#8220;Search: the final frontier. To boldly go where someone had gone before.&#8221;  &#8220;A bold search for a new name.&#8221; Video runs over Microsoft&#8217;s chronic renaming of its search engine.</li>
<li>And there it is: the new name is &#8220;Bing.&#8221;</li>

Obviously we needed a better name, says Ballmer. &#8220;We needed a name that says this is all about search.&#8221; Ballmer doesn&#8217;t seem to really know. &#8220;I&#8217;m not the creative guy, here&#8230;short mattered&#8230;people like to &#8216;verb up&#8217;&#8230;works globally, doesn&#8217;t have negative connotations.&#8221; Walt: So everyone is going to walk out of here and say &#8220;Bing me&#8221;? Clearly that&#8217;s Ballmer&#8217;s hope. &#8220;This is a very important step&#8230;it&#8217;s not a substitute for innovation, but we need to build brand equity in addition to technology equity.&#8221;</li>
<li>Was securing the trademark problematic? Ballmer says there were a few challenges. Bing Crosby, apparently, was not an issue. In any case, Ballmer seems to enjoy saying the word of his new search service. Maybe Microsoft should consider a new name for Zune. &#8220;Zing&#8221;?</li>
<li>Ballmer brings out Yusuf Mehdi to demo Bing. It&#8217;s going live on June 3. From a UI perspective, it&#8217;s a box and a button format with screensaver-esque background. Demoing basic Web searches. Best Match denotes an official or definitive site&#8211;the site we know to be authoritative. Instant Answer&#8211;answers to obvious questions delivered along with search returns; a search for Oscars immediately returns a result for who won an Academy Award. A search for UPS (UPS) automatically returns a customer service number at the top of the page. Walt asks to search on &#8220;Microsoft.&#8221; Much laughter, but the search return does feature a customer service number.</li>
<li>Bing also returns real-time flight data. Handy. Mehdi notes that Bing includes the technology Microsoft acquired when it purchased Powerset. Using it to &#8220;understand&#8221; pages, mine data. Walt notes that returns from Encarta, Microsoft&#8217;s now-defunct encyclopedia, appear along with material from Wikipedia. &#8220;Encarta? What&#8217;s that?&#8221; he jokes. Ballmer chuckles: &#8220;Encarta is an encyclopedia&#8230;that is not getting much ongoing investment.&#8221;</li>

<li>Demoing media searches now. Video searches pull up a nice screen of thumbnails that play in the search pane when clicked. On to weather. Bing gives a full five-day forecast, as opposed to what Google offers&#8211;a single day, I think. Search for a city returns, weather, events, sports games, video mentions of the area.</li>
<li>On to shopping. A search for a Canon (CAJ) camera returns a hybrid search shopping page. Price comparisons, user reviews. Also, Cashback, which rewards people for purchases made through the site. Here&#8217;s a nice feature: Farecast. Flight search&#8211;issues a query across airlines by price, hops, etc. Also tracks flight pricing trends. Tells you if your fare is likely to go up.</li>
<li> Bing seems to be designed specifically to keep people on its search pages as opposed to sending them off to other sites. Is that what Microsoft is trying to do? Won&#8217;t this annoy content owners? Ballmer says no and adds that content deals are possible. &#8220;We&#8217;re not trying to get in the way of copyright holders,&#8221; he says. &#8220;If value should be redivided somehow between content providers, advertisers and search engines, let&#8217;s have that conversation&#8230;.We&#8217;re not trying to profit off of anyone else&#8217;s work.&#8221;</li>
<li>Recalling Ask&#8217;s big redesign and it&#8217;s subsequent rise and fall, Walt asks if the same thing might happen to Bing. &#8220;No,&#8221; says Ballmer. Bing is too tremendous a stride. It differentiates itself from Google. It might not appeal to everyone, but if it appeals to 20 percent of them, that&#8217;s a success. Ask wasn&#8217;t able to do that.</li>
<li>Ballmer: &#8220;Search has not been a dynamic category in terms of innovation.&#8221;</li>

<li>Walt circles back and notes that Ask spent an enormous amount of money on a rebranding campaign that ultimately failed despite some good buzz. How much money is Microsoft dedicating to the Bing branding campaign? &#8220;Lots,&#8221; says Ballmer. &#8220;When I approved the budget, I gulped, and a gulp in a $60 billion company, well, that&#8217;s a big gulp.&#8221;</li>
<li>Walt asks Ballmer about the overhaul of Windows and how important it is in an era when we&#8217;re moving to cloud-based services and from PCs to netbooks and mobile devices. Ballmer seems puzzled by the question. Smartphones are PCs. Netbooks are PCS. &#8220;The Web is designed for the PC&#8230;.Most of these mobile apps are substituting for the fact that the original app wasn&#8217;t designed for the PC,&#8221; he says.</li>
<li>Walt refers to some survey data again. Notes that many consumers say they don&#8217;t plan to purchase a netbook in the near future. How do you interpret that? Ballmer: &#8220;I just think netbook is a funny brand&#8230;.What is a netbook? Is it defined by its operating system, its memory, its screen size? They&#8217;re really just PCs. I bet if you asked people if they planned to buy a portable computer you&#8217;d get a much better response&#8230;.It&#8217;s a little hard to know what the heck the difference is between the netbook and the PC.&#8221;</li>
<li>Walt: Windows 7 is on track? Ballmer: &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure what &#8216;track&#8217; it is, but whatever it is, it&#8217;s on it.&#8221;</li>
<li>On to the Q&amp;A. First question: How is Microsoft going to convince users to learn the new Windows 7 and Office UI? Ballmer says change is difficult. Notes that he hates whenever The Wall Street Journal changes its format. He says Microsoft&#8217;s internal testing has determined that the changes the company has made to the OS and Office suite are good ones that will be embraced. That said, there will always be some difficulties.</li>
<li>Questioner asks about natural-language search, wondering how Bing would deal with a search for a Hilton hotel in Paris, when there&#8217;s the possibility that it might return a list of results for Paris Hilton. He asks for a demo, but Ballmer declines. He can try it for himself on June 3.</li>
<li>Question about Microsoft&#8217;s efforts in the medical arena. Ballmer: &#8220;Health&#8217;s a tough business. People who make IT decisions in the medical industry don&#8217;t make them quickly.&#8221; That said, Microsoft is &#8220;full speed ahead&#8221; in the area.</li>
<li>How is Microsoft differentiating sponsored searches in Bing? Cashback is obviously differentiated, Ballmer says. Paid side is tougher though.</li>
<li>Final question from Walt: Does Bing mean that your interest in Yahoo (YHOO) is waning? Ballmer jokingly recites the standard bullet points.  &#8220;I think there&#8217;s a lot that can make sense in terms of a search partnership, not an acquisition,&#8221; he says in a monotone. &#8220;Whether such a thing will happen I don&#8217;t know.&#8221; Walt presses him further about a meeting between Ballmer and Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz. Ballmer jokes that the meeting was actually a note that Bartz left for him in the Green Room. According to Ballmer, it read: &#8220;The makeup couldn&#8217;t fix me if it tried.&#8221;</li>
