<p class="mailbox-question"><em>Which app do you recommend for using on the iPad 2 for opening Microsoft Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint?)</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>If you literally just want to open the documents to read them, you don&#8217;t need any apps. The iPad comes with built-in viewers for Microsoft Office files. However, for opening, storing and editing the files, I like two products. One is called Quickoffice Pro HD, which costs $20 and handles all three types of files you cite, and more. The other is the tablet version of Apple&#8217;s iWork suite, which is sold as three separate apps for $10 each&#x2014;Pages for word processing, Numbers for spreadsheets and Keynote for presentations.</p>
<p>This also would be a good place to note that there are reports, unconfirmed by the company, that Microsoft is considering releasing an iPad version of Office itself. I have no evidence this will happen.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em>Do any of your recommended Ultrabooks run Office?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>All Ultrabooks run Microsoft Office. While Ultrabooks are thin and light, they are full-blown Windows laptops running the latest Intel processors, and in my tests, they ran Office very well, just as well as many heavier, thicker laptops I&#8217;ve reviewed.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em>My son was told by an Apple phone representative that the iCloud service cannot handle our full iTunes library of 6,000 songs, and it will only sync with your hand-held, wireless devices.</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>That&#8217;s inaccurate. ITunes Match handles 25,000 songs and syncs with Macs, PCs (if they&#8217;re running iTunes), the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.</p>

<p>Apple devices can be addictive: People buy one tiny iPod, fall in love, and end up with three or four other Apple products. Now if only they could see all their data on all those devices simultaneously. </p>
<p>Starting today, they can. </p>
<p>ICloud is designed to store and replicate documents, music, apps and 1,000 photos on PCs, the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. It also syncs contacts, calendars and email so all your machines and devices have the same data and content. It will back up five gigabytes of data, but certain types aren&#8217;t counted against that total. The best part: It&#8217;s free. </p>

Thanks to iCloud, the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch all have the same document with no work on the user&#8217;s part.</div>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing iCloud&#8217;s sync ability between a MacBook Pro, iPhone 4S and iPad 3G. I also accessed and added content using iCloud.com. At first, I ran into a few hiccups with syncing photos, but an Apple spokesman explained that the company&#8217;s servers were occasionally down while they were being prepared for Wednesday&#8217;s iCloud launch. After that, iCloud worked without a hitch—well enough that I stopped thinking about which device held what since they were all updated with the same content. </p>
<p>Over the weekend, I imported 300 photos my parents took on a recent trip to Italy, forgetting that my computer was set up with iCloud. When I picked up my iPhone later, the Grand Canal in Venice and the Duomo in Florence were staring back at me in Photos. Same with my iPad. </p>
<p>On the downside, iCloud doesn&#8217;t automatically sync videos to other devices. In WiFi, it won&#8217;t sync edited photos if edits are made on a device after its camera app is closed. (This includes removing red eye, cropping and auto-enhancing images.) And document sharing on iCloud is focused on sharing with oneself, not with other people, unlike the document-sharing solutions from Google and Microsoft.</p>
<p>I found iCloud&#8217;s most useful feature to be Photo Stream, which automatically sends images captured by an iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch up to iCloud and replicates them on all other iCloud devices, one by one. Watching these photos pop onto the screen of my computer, iPad or iPhone was nothing short of delightful. </p>
<p>Photos are pushed via iCloud to the Mac and PC in their full resolution and sent to the iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone in a resolution that&#8217;s optimized for those displays.</p>

Photo Stream sends images captured by mobile devices, such as the iPhone and iPad, up to iCloud and replicates them on all other iCloud devices.</div>
<p>By default, any images imported to a PC or Mac are automatically sent into Photo Stream, though this setting can be turned off. Devices need only be powered on and in WiFi to receive images from Photo Stream.</p>
<p>Each photo remains in Photo Stream for 30 days, and only the last 1,000 are saved there. Photos moved into albums on devices will be kept permanently, while Macs and Windows PCs have no photo limit because of their larger storage capacities. </p>
<p>A WiFi network is also required for Backup in iCloud, which backs up purchased music, TV shows, apps, books, device settings, app data, messages, ringtones and images in Photo Stream. Only documents and email count against a person&#8217;s five gigabytes of free iCloud storage. </p>
<p>Higher storage capacities are available for an annual fee: $20 for 10 gigabytes, $40 for 20 gigabytes or $100 for 50 gigabytes. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Not Just Photos</h5>
<p>Documents can be synced to all devices through iCloud using iWork apps. These include Pages, Keynote and Numbers, and each costs $10 in the App Store. I tested this with ease, creating documents—like a flyer I made using a photo of a church that I took with my iPhone camera—that synced with my iPad and vice versa. Changes to documents appeared the same across all devices and at icloud.com almost instantly.</p>
<p>To get an iCloud account, you&#8217;ll need either a Mac that&#8217;s running OS X Lion, Apple&#8217;s latest operating system, or a mobile device with iOS 5. </p>
<p>Starting Wednesday, when users can install the newest software on one of these machines, they will be prompted to set up iCloud. Once you have this account, iCloud will work with a Windows PC running Vista or Windows 7; instructions explain how to set up and use iCloud on Macs or Windows PCs. ICloud is also accessible via Web browser at icloud.com.  </p>
<p>If you have an account with Apple&#8217;s MobileMe email and storage service, the company will offer to integrate it with your iCloud account. (MobileMe will be discontinued after June.) If you don&#8217;t have a MobileMe account, on-screen prompts will walk you through setting up a free me.com email address from any iOS device or computer. I did this in seconds using my MacBook, and noticed that my Mail and Notes were immediately replicated on all devices through iCloud.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Match That Tune</h5>
<p>ITunes Match, an important piece of iCloud, wasn&#8217;t available for testing yet. To make sure your music library has a high-quality recording of each song, iTunes Match will scan your library for anything not purchased from Apple and then give you access to the high-quality iTunes track in the cloud and on all other devices. Match will be available at the end of this month for $25 a year and will work with up to 25,000 tracks. </p>
<p>Another interesting feature that wasn&#8217;t available for testing was Find My Friends, a free app that works with iCloud and is Apple&#8217;s answer to Foursquare.  It will let iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users find another user&#8217;s location—in list or map view—as long as they accept an invitation. Temporary location sharing will be possible with this app, enabling sharing with a specific number of people for a specific amount of time. This might come in handy during a family vacation or at a day-long music festival with friends.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Making more news ahead of its developers conference next week, Apple said on Tuesday that it is bringing its iWork collection of productivity apps to the small screen.</p>

<p>Already available for the iPad, Keynote, Numbers and Pages are now available for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and the two most recent versions of the iPod touch. Each app sells for $9.99 and is a free update for those that have already purchased the iPad versions.</p>
<p>“The incredible Retina display, revolutionary Multi-Touch interface and our powerful software make it easy to create, edit, organize and share all of your documents from iPhone 4 or iPod touch,&#8221; Apple senior VP Phil Schiller said in a statement.</p>
<p>The announcement comes as Apple has also <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110531/steve-jobs-says-hell-show-off-apples-icloud-june-6-on/">confirmed its plans to detail iCloud and the next versions of the iPhone and Mac operating systems</a> at next week&#8217;s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.</p>
<p>For its part, Microsoft has yet to bring most of Office to the iPhone, though it has released an iPhone version of its OneNote note-taking application. It, of course, does have a mobile version of Office for its own Windows Phone 7 operating system.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday, I wrote about <a href="http://www.alphonsolabs.com/products">Pulse</a>, a news-reading app with innovative design, <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101201/pulse-news-app-gets-social/">going social by integrating Facebook</a>.</p>
<p>Now <a href="http://www.flipboard.com/">Flipboard</a>, a social news-reading app based around Twitter and Facebook, is adding publisher feeds.</p>
<p>One thing&#8217;s clear: There&#8217;s a lot of excitement and energy going into how the iPad can re-create content consumption.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-958" title="FlipboardMossberg" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/FlipboardMossberg-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Flipboard is launching a beta test with eight publishers, including, full disclosure, <strong>All Things Digital</strong>.</p>
<p>The other publishers are ABC News, Bon App&eacute;tit, Lonely Planet, SB Nation, SFGate, Uncrate and the Washington Post Magazine.</p>
<p>Participating advertisers, through a partnership with OMD, include Pepsi, Gatorade, Infiniti, the CW Television Network, Showtime, Levi’s, Dockers, Hilton Worldwide, GE, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, Project (RED), Standup2cancer.org and Charity: Water.</p>
<p>They are contributing full-page ads that are inserted into longer-form articles.</p>
<p>During the beta period, no money will change hands between any of these parties, including our site, according to Flipboard CEO Mike McCue.</p>
<p>Later, McCue said he expects to add many more publishers to the Flipboard app, and perhaps help publishers create their own &#8220;iPadified&#8221; content experiences to distribute themselves.</p>
<p>Instead of prompting users to go to the iPad&#8217;s Safari browser to read full versions of articles, as it has done to date, Flipboard will now import partner publisher content and lay it out automatically. For these stories, Flipboard formats images, divides them into pages and offers different layouts for portrait and landscape modes.</p>
<p>McCue said Flipboard users&#8217; No. 1 most requested feature is the ability to add content through RSS feeds.</p>
<p>But he&#8217;s not giving them that with this update. Users can still only subscribe to publishers through Twitter accounts and lists. The reason, according to McCue, is Flipboard is dedicated to the social aspect and beautiful design of content, and RSS contains neither of these things.</p>
<p>McCue speaks of scrolling through Web pages with advertising units and side bars as a relic of the early Web and crappy Internet connections, saying Flipboard represents a return to the pagination and image emphasis of print.</p>
<p>Unlike print, though, Flipboard doesn&#8217;t work offline; that&#8217;s a future feature, said McCue. He also said his team is still singularly devoted to developing for iPad, and will divert focus to Android tablets only after they have an established user base.</p>
<p>By the way&#8211;more full disclosure&#8211;seeing <strong>ATD</strong> content get iPadified in McCue&#8217;s demo wasn&#8217;t as fun and glossy as you might imagine, especially given our small images.</p>
<p>And in what might be a problem for other content publishers like us, the quick blog posts we often write are not as easily transferable to this layout, given Flipboard does not yet differentiate between short stories and longer articles.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/09/playbookthumb.jpg" alt="" title="playbookthumb" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-full wp-image-49451" />Research in Motion hasn&#8217;t yet launched its new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and won&#8217;t until 2011, but it&#8217;s already kicked off <a href="http://blogs.blackberry.com/2010/11/blackberry-playbook-and-ipad-comparison-web-fidelity-video">the campaign</a> to position it against what&#8217;s likely to be its archrival: Apple&#8217;s iPad.</p>
<p>In a new RIM video (below), the PlayBook is pitted against the iPad in a side-by-side comparison of &#8220;Web fidelity.&#8221; And what do you know: The PlayBook comes out looking better. In the video, RIM&#8217;s 7-inch tablet pulls up complete Web pages as the iPad slogs behind. Where the PlayBook shows off rich Flash content, the iPad &#8220;actually has an error&#8230;you&#8217;ll see that it says Flash is not supported&#8221; and instead delivers a &#8220;rather mundane, boring-looking HTML site.&#8221; In the Acid 3 test of compatibility with Web standards, the iPad does get an A, but the PlayBook gets an A+ with &#8220;pixel-perfect rendering.&#8221; And where the PlayBook&#8217;s Javascript and HTML5 animations are smooth and fluid, the iPad&#8217;s look choppy.</p>
<p>If this is the direction RIM takes with its eventual ad campaign (and if the performance differences are borne out in real-world use), it could score some points. Enough to dent the iPad&#8217;s &#8220;magic&#8221;? Well, we&#8217;ll see.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Most people see Google&#8217;s image search as a quick way to find a picture. Ken Solomon sees art.</p>
<p>Literally.</p>
<p>Solomon is a Brooklyn-based artist who has spent the past couple years working on stuff with a digital bent. One recent strain: Recreating the contents of a Web browser, such as Google results pages and Facebook profiles, using watercolor on paper.</p>
<p>This sounds odd but looks cool, at least to my eye. And I definitely enjoy the practical joke at work here: Solomon creates an image by appropriating Google&#8217;s (GOOG) appropriation of other people&#8217;s images.</p>
<p>Is that art? Well, Solomon has a show opening at a <a href="http://www.joseebienvenugallery.com/">Chelsea gallery</a> tonight, so some people think so. You can see some <a href="http://kensolomon.com/gallery/index.php?album=main">examples</a> of his <a href="http://www.joseebienvenugallery.com/images_solomon.html">work</a> at the bottom of this page, but they may make a bit more sense when you hear him explain what he&#8217;s up to in this video:</p>

<p>Looks like Apple (AAPL) is lighting up the iPad App Store in advance of the device&#8217;s official launch. iTunes is now showing a number of iPad-specific applications, all of them evidently available for purchase now. </p>
<p>I was able to buy a copy of Pages, Apple&#8217;s word processing app, which is now sitting in a new &#8220;iPad Apps&#8221; section of my application library in iTunes.</p>
<p>Interestingly, I don&#8217;t see any sign of <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5506994/whoa-the-official-netflix-streaming-ipad-app">the Netflix app that&#8217;s rumored to be coming for the device</a> &#8230;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The magazine industry has placed tremendous&#8211;very likely, unrealistic&#8211;hope in the iPad. One exception: Magazine god George Lois.</p>
<p>Lois influenced generations of art directors during his 10-year tenure at Esquire, which spanned most of the 1960s. You can see several examples of his iconic covers below, and a bigger collection <a href="http://www.georgelois.com/esquire.html">here</a>.</p>
<p>It would be nice to think that Lois is excited about the possibilities creative types could explore with Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) new gadget, too. But he&#8217;s not. From a <a href="http://www.observer.com/2010/daily-transom/george-lois-difference-between-looking-woman-and-having-sex-her">New York Observer</a> interview this month:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>And what does he think about reading a magazine on the soon-to-be-released iPad? &#8220;It&#8217;s okay, I guess,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But magazines will never die because there is a visceral feeling of having that thing in your hands and turning the pages. It&#8217;s so different on the screen. It&#8217;s the difference between looking at a woman and having sex with her.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>UPDATE: If nothing else, Lois is consistent with his magazine vs. tablet metaphor. Here he is talking to Wired creative director (and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100216/wired-comes-to-the-ipad-version-2-0/">tablet enthusiast</a>) Scott Dadich. He also says something quite similar in the newest issue of Wired itself, as <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100330/found-a-magazine-guy-who-yawns-at-the-ipad/#comment-42309242">Robert Quigley notes</a>.</p>

<p>A <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100128/boomtowns-apple-ipad-day-starring-walt-mossberg-plus-a-steve-jobs-cameo/">video BoomTown posted earlier this week</a>&#8211;following around my <strong>All Things Digital</strong> partner Walt Mossberg at the launch of the Apple iPad&#8211;has gotten an awful lot of attention, due to a little over two minutes of him kibitzing about the device with CEO Steve Jobs.</p>
<p>I get the interest in the video, since it is not often you see the highly controlled Jobs just chit-chatting and even making the case about an Apple (AAPL) product, as he does in the video.</p>
<p>Since the Jobs section of my longer video was in the middle, I decided to put all the Jobs clips I had together, all done in my usual shaky spycam style and which you can see below.</p>
<p>In the video, Mossberg asks Jobs about the iBooks application and the price of e-books, and Jobs insists the price will be the same on Apple as on Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>&#8220;The prices will be the same,&#8221; said Jobs, before getting in a little dig at the maker of the Kindle e-reader. &#8220;Publishers are actually withholding their books from Amazon, because they&#8217;re not happy with it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Jobs also told Mossberg that the iPad will have &#8220;140-something hours, I think, of continuous music playback&#8221; and that the 10 hours of battery life for the iPad was more than enough for anyone.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all about the display&#8230;.Our chips don&#8217;t use hardly any power,&#8221; said Jobs.</p>
<p>He also said consumers don&#8217;t necessarily need even more battery time &#8220;because you just end up pluggin&#8217; it in. You end up docking it or whatever you&#8217;re going to do with it. It&#8217;s not a big deal. Ten hours is a <em>long</em> time, because you&#8217;re not going to read for 10 hours.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mossberg also asked Jobs if he should pen his review of the iPad <em>on</em> the iPad and if he could convert it into a Word document, which Jobs endorsed.</p>
<p>&#8220;Write it in Pages, you could make a Word version and send it in an email to your editors,&#8221; Jobs said.</p>
<p>Asked Mossberg: &#8220;All from here?&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Yeah,&#8221; said Jobs.</p>
<p>I also had another video of Jobs talking to Mossberg about why he used the iPad name, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100127/memo-to-geek-dudes-the-inevitable-maxipad-jokes-about-the-ipad-are-lame-and-steve-jobs-doesnt-care-anyway/">has been made fun of my some</a>.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, my Flip camera ate it&#8211;after I watched it and took notes&#8211;when I was transferring it.</p>
<p>But, according to my notes, Jobs dismissed all the incoming flak he said he expected to receive about the name.</p>
<p>“You forget, but they made fun of iPod name when it came out,” he said, in part. “What matters is the product and what it means to consumers.”</p>
<p>Jobs noted that in a year’s time, the name <em>iPad</em> would become rote to people, as long as they like the mobile device and consider it innovative and its software useful.</p>
<p>In addition, he said it was an inevitable brand extension from iPod and iPhone.</p>
<p>&#8220;Plus the fonts look great together…iPod, iPhone, iPad,&#8221; he said.</p>

One thing he didn&#8217;t show off, though: Much in the way of new media.</p>
<p>Jobs and company clearly plan on incorporating new products from newspapers, magazine publishers, TV networks and Hollywood movie studios as the iPad rolls out. But there wasn&#8217;t much talk about any of those media products during the launch event.</p>
<p>The only mention of TV, music and movies, for instance, came as Jobs showed off the device&#8217;s multimedia features. But the implication, at least for now, is that consumers will get that stuff into their machines the same way they get it now, from iTunes, and at the same price&#8211;or via Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube, which Jobs did take time to demo. That is, no talk of <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091102/apples-itunes-pitch-tv-for-30-a-month/">subscription products</a> or of other changes in the media consumption/distribution model.</p>
<p>The same goes for magazine and newspaper products. As <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100119/whos-joining-steve-jobs-for-the-tablet-launch-next-week/">predicted</a>, Apple (AAPL) highlighted an iPad app designed by the New York Times (NYT), but there was no mention of how much the thing will cost or whether the paper will charge anything at all.</p>
<p>&#8220;This was a demonstration product. It’s too soon to discuss any details such as pricing,&#8221; Times spokeswoman Diane McNulty tells me via email.</p>
<p>Apple also highlighted games, bringing out demos from Electronic Arts (ERTS) and Gameloft. But both companies showed off versions of games you can already get for the iPhone and iPod touch.</p>
<p>Jobs did unveil one major media change: Apple is getting into the e-book world and competing with Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) Kindle head on. Jobs made a point of highlighting agreements with five big publishers: Pearson&#8217;s <a href="http://www.penguin.com/">Penguin Group</a>, News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) <a href="http://www.harpercollins.com/footer/companyProfile.aspx">HarperCollins</a>, <a href="http://www.hachettebookgroup.com/about_index.aspx">Hachette Book Group</a>, CBS&#8217;s (CBS) <a href="http://www.simonandschuster.biz/content/careers.cfm">Simon &amp; Schuster</a> and <a href="http://www.mcgraw-hill.com/">McGraw-Hill</a> (MHP). And, as reported, he <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100127/the-music-industrys-cautionary-itunes-tale-resonates-with-publishers-and-apple/">showed off a higher price point for books than Amazon&#8217;s $9.99</a>.</p>
<p>But even that seems fairly preliminary. While Jobs&#8217;s demo showed off splashes of color and a more &#8220;paper-like&#8221; presentation of the books&#8217; pages, it didn&#8217;t feature much of the stuff you&#8217;d expect in an &#8220;enhanced e-book,&#8221; like video, audio, etc. So it will be interesting to see how the books, and their prices, evolve.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s the key to all of this: It&#8217;s going to take some time. Keep in mind that Apple kept just about all the big media companies at arm&#8217;s length before the announcement and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100125/more-stuff-you-wont-see-on-tablet-day-conde-nast-magazines/">didn&#8217;t even acknowledge that there was a device</a> until <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100120/no-time-inc-for-the-tablet-next-week/">very recently</a>.</p>
<p>Apple expects that like the iPod and iPhone, the iPad will be a big enough hit that media companies will adapt to the new hardware. Some of the media executives I spoke to in advance of today&#8217;s announcements were fine with that, but noted that many of them didn&#8217;t roll out new products for the earlier devices for a long time following their launch. We may be looking at a repeat here.</p>

Undoubtedly, much of its appeal will lie in its color display and ease of use. Much like other OS X applications, the user interface looks intuitive and appealing&#8211;very book-like. As seen on the big overhead screens at the presentation in Yerba Buena Center this morning, pages look as if they are written on paper.</p>
<p>&#8220;We use the e-pub format, the most popular open-book format in the world,&#8221; said Steve Jobs. &#8220;We think iPad is going to be a very popular e-reader not just for bestsellers, but for textbooks as well.&#8221;</p>
<p>Technology developed for the iPad&#8217;s e-reader application has already benefited other Apple programs. A new version of iWork, for example, was developed specifically for the iPad. Keynote, Pages and Numbers have all been optimized for multitouch. Numbers, in particular, has been souped-up; it now boasts a data-entry keyboard along with some 250 built-in functions. The software’s gesture capabilities put Excel to shame.</p>
<p>Apple is going to charge $9.99 for each program, and all three are compatible with their Mac versions.</p>

<h4 class="subhed">Liveblog</h4>
<p><strong>9:13 am PT:</strong> Quite a scene here this morning; the queue for media credentials is nearly as long as some of the iPhone 3G launch lines I saw a few years back. Moments ago, an Apple PR rep slipped through the doors of the Yerba Buena Center to ask that the press waiting outside take two big steps back. The last time that happened to me, I was at a Jesus Lizard show.</p>

<p><strong>9:54 am:</strong> The doors open and the press enters the event hall. Initially, at least, the scene is pretty crazy. &#8220;This is like the subway in New York,&#8221; an attendee behind me jokes. More like the subway in Tokyo, I think to myself.</p>
<p>A Bob Dylan soundtrack plays as media and guests file in. It&#8217;s momentarily interrupted by a &#8220;please take your seats, our event is about to begin&#8221; announcement.</p>
<p><strong>10:00 am:</strong> Interesting stage set-up today: Instead of an empty stage or a simple table, there are a black leather chair and side-table. Lights are dimming&#8230;.</p>
<p>And Steve Jobs takes the stage to a standing ovation.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to kick off 2010 by introducing a truly magical product, but first a few updates&#8230;.A few weeks ago we sold our 250 millionth iPod&#8230;I didn&#8217;t want to let that moment pass without recognizing it.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:05 am:</strong> Jobs offers a quick overview of Apple&#8217;s retail operations and some of the new stores it has opened recently before moving on to the iTunes App Store. &#8220;A few weeks ago we announced that three billion applications had been downloaded from the App Store&#8211;that&#8217;s in 18 months&#8230;amazing.&#8221;<br />
He notes, as he did in the company&#8217;s earnings release the other day, that Apple is now a $50 billion company.</p>
<p>Apple is a mobile devices company, says Jobs, &#8220;the largest mobile devices company in the world now. Larger than Sony&#8217;s mobile device business, larger than Samsung&#8217;s and, astonishingly, Nokia&#8217;s as well.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:07 am:</strong> A quick historical overview now. Jobs touches on the first PowerBook, introduced in 1991. He moves on to the MacBook and then the iPhone.</p>

<p>&#8220;All of us use laptops and smartphones, now. And the question has arisen lately: Is there room for a device in the middle?&#8230;We&#8217;ve pondered this question as well.&#8221;</p>
<p>This &#8220;middle&#8221; device, says Jobs, must be better at doing certain tasks than either the laptop or smartphone. If there&#8217;s going to be a third-device category, it must be better at browsing the Web, video, photos, music, etc.</p>
<p>&#8220;Some folks say this device is a netbook&#8230;. The problem is, netbooks aren&#8217;t better at anything.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:10 am:</strong> But we have something that is, says Jobs, &#8220;and it&#8217;s called the iPad.&#8221;</p>
<p>Photos of the device appear on the giant screens. Very thin. Very slick. &#8220;IPad offers the best Web browsing experience there is&#8211;way better than laptops.&#8221; There is no camera  that I can see. That&#8217;s not going to go over well with folks hoping for a device that supports video iChat.</p>
<p><strong>10:13 am:</strong> Further details: The &#8220;iPad is a dream to type on,&#8221; Jobs says, pointing out its life-sized onscreen keyboard. It&#8217;s also an awesome way to enjoy media. iTunes, iTunes University and YouTube HD support are built in.</p>
<p><strong>10:14 am:</strong> Jobs sits down to demo the device: &#8220;Using this thing is remarkable. It&#8217;s so much more intimate and capable than the laptop.&#8221; He loads Safari and surfs over to the New York Times (NYT). The iPad loads quickly and Jobs is able to easily navigate the page, loading stories and zooming in on articles.</p>
<p><strong>10:15 am:</strong> Demonstrating landscape and portrait now. &#8220;This device adapts to the way I want to use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Definitely an impressive browsing experience. Fast and elegant.</p>
<p>Now, an overview of Mail. Also elegant. Nice split-screen presentation. Hit compose, and a nice onscreen keyboard pops up. Jobs types out a message to his colleagues at Apple. Seems relatively easy.</p>
<p><strong>10:19 am:</strong> Moving on to iPad&#8217;s photo capabilities. It supports iPhoto&#8217;s Events, Faces and Places features.  It also offers built-in slideshows complete with soundtracks and transitions.</p>
<p>Running a slideshow demo, Jobs pauses and looks out at the audience with a Chesire Cat-wide grin. He&#8217;s clearly relishing this moment.</p>

<p><strong>10:22 am:</strong>: The iTunes experience on iPad is much as you would expect. Similar, if not identical, to what the software currently offers. Calendar and Contacts apps are also nice and, again, similar to what you&#8217;d find on a MacBook or iPhone.</p>
<p><strong>10:24 am:</strong> Demoing Google Maps now. The iPad supports Google Street View and the implementation is very slick.</p>
<p><strong>10:25 am:</strong> Moving on to video. Jobs calls up an HD clip from Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube and displays it in both portrait and landscape. That finished, he fires up iTunes and loads &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; to demo the device&#8217;s video features, scrubbing, etc. Then he shows us a clip from Pixar&#8217;s &#8220;Up.&#8221; Tap to go full-screen. &#8220;Isn&#8217;t that wonderful?&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:27 am:</strong> Watching that is nothing like actually having one in your hands, says Jobs.</p>

<p>&#8220;And in addition to 10 hours of battery life, iPad offers a full month of standby time,&#8221; Jobs notes. &#8220;It&#8217;s also a good environmental citizen,&#8221; he adds, noting that it&#8217;s a very green device.</p>
<p><strong>10:31 am:</strong>  Jobs invites Scott Forestall to the stage to talk about apps on the device.</p>
<p>&#8220;We built the iPad to run virtually every app in the App Store right out of the box,&#8221; Forestall says.</p>
<p>Evidently, a built-in pixel-doubling feature automatically scales iPhone apps to full-screen iPad apps.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am:</strong> Forestall runs an unmodified racing game from the App Store. He first demos it in the screen size of an iPhone. Then, using the pixel-doubling feature, he blows it out to full screen. Very slick.</p>
<p>&#8220;So you can buy the iPad, take it home, hook it up and download all your iPhone apps and run them with no problem at all,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>Forestall announces a new iPhone software development kit specifically geared to the iPad. He notes that iPad-specific applications will be featured &#8220;front and center&#8221; in the App Store.<br />
He then invites Gameloft&#8217;s Mark Hickey to the stage to demo some new games the company has developed using the new SDK.</p>
<p>Hickey notes that the iPad&#8217;s additional screen space is a boon for developers, particularly those building games. He demos a first-person shooter that showcases this. &#8220;We&#8217;re now able to interact with the game world in ways that we weren&#8217;t able to before.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am</strong>: Next up, the New York Times. Martin Nisenholtz takes the stage to talk about its iPad effort.</p>
<p>After talking up the Times iPhone app, Nisenholtz segues to the the paper&#8217;s new iPad app: &#8220;We think we&#8217;ve captured the experience and essence of reading the newspaper.&#8221;</p>
<p>The app is largely what you&#8217;d expect. Tap to resize text, zoom, breaking news updates, video. &#8220;This is everything you love about the paper and everything you love about the Web.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:44 am:</strong> Now, a painting application called Brushes that was famously used to create a New Yorker cover.<br />
The app is impressive enough on iPhone; it&#8217;s even more so on the iPad. It supports &#8220;playback&#8221; of paintings, and as the presenter notes, brings us one step closer to a real virtual painting studio.</p>

<p><strong>10:46 am:</strong> EA&#8217;s Travis Boatman take&#8217;s the stage. The topic of his presentation: Need For Speed.</p>
<p>&#8220;Building for the iPad is a little bit like holding a high-def TV screen a few inches from your face,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>The iPad version of Need for Speed boasts a number of touch-activated enhancements: Tap on the car to view its interior, tap on the rear-view mirror to look behind you.</p>
<p><strong>10:52 am:</strong> Up next: MLB.com&#8217;s Chad Evans. He demos the outfit&#8217;s iPad-optimized app, which uses the device&#8217;s additional screen space to display video excerpts and MLB TV.</p>
<p>MLB TV can be streamed like and enhanced with onscreen stats and data. &#8220;This big display really allows us to create a much more immersive experience,&#8221; Evans says.</p>
<p><strong>10:52 am:</strong> Forestall returns to the stage to make another brief plug for the SDK before Jobs takes over for him.<br />
&#8220;Let me show you another one of our apps that we&#8217;re very excited about,&#8221; Jobs says. &#8220;An e-book reader.&#8221;</p>
<p>Behind him a photo of Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) Kindle appears. &#8220;Amazon did a great job with their reader and we&#8217;re standing on their shoulders here&#8230;.Today we&#8217;re announcing the iBooks store,&#8221; says Jobs, adding that it will be supported initially by Penguin, Simon &#038; Schuster and a number of other big publishers.</p>
<p>The iBooks Store interface begins with a simple bookshelf view. Tap the screen and it loads a more iTunes-like view. Purchase a book and it&#8217;s added to your bookshelf with a slick little animation.</p>
<p>The reading experience seems very appealing. Much more book-like. From where I sit, the pages look like they&#8217;re written on paper.</p>
<p>&#8220;We use the e-pub format, the most popular open-book format in the world,&#8221; says Jobs. &#8220;We think iPad is going to be a very popular e-reader not just for bestsellers, but for textbooks as well.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:58 am:</strong> And here&#8217;s another new product announcement: A new version of iWork tweaked for use on the iPad. Jobs invites Phil Schiller on stage to demo it.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a completely new version of Keynote, a completely new version of Pages and a completely new version of Numbers&#8211;all optimized for multitouch.</p>

<p>Schiller demos Keynote first. Creating presentations appears intuitive and simple&#8211;a slide navigator on the left, tap to load individual slides in the main window, drag to rearrange.</p>
<p>Nice use of multitouch gestures to enhance the app. Pinch to resize photos, tap to insert animations and transitions. These are all fairly advanced techniques and the device seems to handle them well.</p>
<p><strong>11:05 am:</strong> Moving on to Pages now. Also impressive, though creating a written document on a tablet device like the iPad seems like it might be a drag. A nice tool for editing, though. Simple controls.</p>

<p><strong>11:07 am:</strong> Moving on to Numbers. This application also makes good use of multitouch gestures and boasts a data-entry keyboard along with some 250 built-in functions. The software&#8217;s gesture capabilities makes Excel look antediluvian.<br />
Powerful and <em>fast</em>.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s Apple going to charge for iWork? $9.99 each, says Schiller, who notes that all three applications are compatible with their Mac versions.</p>
<p>Jobs returns to the stage, grinning. &#8220;Isn&#8217;t that great?&#8221; he asks for what&#8217;s easily the 10th time. iPad, he says, will synch to Mac or PC via USB.</p>
<p><strong>11:14 am:</strong> Evidently, there will be two iPad models&#8211;one with Wi-Fi-only and one with Wi-Fi and 3G. The 3G device will come with two plans: 250 MB per month for $14.99, unlimited data for $29.99. </p>
<p>And who&#8217;s the carrier? AT&#038;T.</p>
<p>A small groan ripples through the audience.</p>
<p>Jobs allows that AT&#038;T is also throwing in free Wi-Fi at its hotspots. He follows that up by noting that there are no contracts for the iPad. You can cancel at anytime.</p>

<p>All iPad 3G models are unlocked and they use new GSM micro SIMS, so chances are they will just work, Jobs says, after noting that Apple hasn&#8217;t yet worked out international carrier deals.</p>
<p><strong>11:16 am:</strong> Now a quick overview as a wrap-up. Jobs touts the overall tablet experience along with the new iBook app and iBook Store. &#8220;This is an amazing product with tremendous breadth. What should we charge for it?&#8230;When we set out to develop the iPad we not only had aggressive UI goals, we had aggressive price goals, because we wanted to put this in the hands of as many people as possible&#8230;.IPad pricing starts not at $999, but $499,&#8221; Jobs says to a huge round of applause.</p>
<p>$499 for 16GB base model.<br />
32GB for $599.<br />
64GB for $699.<br />
Adding 3G requires an additional fee.</p>
<p>Apple will ship Wi-Fi models in 60 days and 3G models in 90.</p>
<p><strong>11:20 am:</strong>  Apple has created new accessories for the iPad: A standard dock and a second dock with a keyboard attached to it. &#8220;Keep one of these in your den and you can write the next &#8220;War and Peace&#8221; on it.&#8221; The final accessory, a new case that doubles as a stand.</p>
<p>Running a video now. It features a number of Apple execs enthusiastically talking up the iPad.</p>

<p><strong>11:25 am:</strong> Let me circle back here for a moment to pricing. Adding 3G to iPad requires an additional $130. So we&#8217;re talking $629 for the 16GB model, $729 for the 32GB and $829 for the 64GB version.</p>
<p>Designer Jon Ives on the iPad: &#8220;In many ways iPad defines our vision, our sense of what&#8217;s next.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>11:32 am:</strong> Jobs returns to the stage and recalls the &#8220;middle device&#8221; scenario he mentioned earlier today. &#8220;Can we create this new category? The bar is set pretty high, but we think we&#8217;ve got the goods.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;This is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,&#8221; he adds. &#8220;The reason the iPad is going to be so great is because Apple has always strived to be at the junction of technology and liberal arts.&#8221;</p>
<p>And with that he concludes. Lights go up and Dylan begins playing over the speakers again.</p>

When will that finally happen?</p>
<p>This year, says Barclays analyst Douglas Anmuth. He predicts that the video site will see revenue jump 55 percent, to $700 million, in 2010, and that it will &#8220;start contributing positively&#8221; to the Google&#8217;s earnings.</p>
<p>Why? Because <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090928/this-just-in-youtube-is-ginormous/">YouTube is ginormous</a>, of course. But also because the company has become more sophisticated about advertising. (Note that <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091216/youtube-paid-video-could-come-in-the-not-too-distant-future/?mod=ATD_search">Google content guru David Eun said much the same thing</a> when I talked to him last month, specifically citing the Google&#8217;s integration of DoubleClick).</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the relevant part of Anmuth&#8217;s note:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Perhaps the main take-away for Google’s display business is that in 2010 we believe YouTube will start contributing positively to EPS. An improving advertising environment certainly helps, but with YouTube monetizing more than 1 billion video views every week, and with strong sell-out rates on its home-page from larger advertisers&#8211;we note 90% of the top 50 Ad Age have advertised on YouTube&#8211;we believe the site can profitably take share of the branded display &amp; video market. We project YouTube to generate $700 million in revenue in 2010, up 55% Y/Y. Usage continues to grow. In November the total number of YouTube’s videos viewed grew 139% to 12.2 billion in November and unique visitors grew 32% Y/Y to 129 million. As a comparison, Hulu, the second most popular video site by videos viewed according to comScore, recording 923 million videos viewed.</p></blockquote>
<p>Of course, the standard caveats that Google (GOOG) uses when people generate less flattering estimates for YouTube also apply here. It&#8217;s very difficult to get a handle on how many pages/views Google is selling and how much it gets for each one. It&#8217;s also tricky to guesstimate how much Google is spending to serve more than a billion video streams a day. So at best, this is an educated guess.</p>
<p>Still, it will be interesting to see if Google concurs with Anmuth. We&#8217;ll hear from Eric Schmidt et al in a week when the company reports fourth-quarter earnings.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Amazon&#8217;s Kindle has been the king of the nascent, much-hyped, category of wireless e-readers since it came out in 2007. Now, numerous companies are determined to challenge the Kindle with dedicated, mass-market gadgets for reading digital books and periodicals. The latest, and potentially most important, of these is a contender called the Nook, produced by the giant bookstore chain Barnes &#038; Noble Inc. (BKS), which started shipping it this week.</p>
<p>The two devices look very similar, but have key differences in capabilities, user interface and polish. Overall, after testing the Nook for about a week, I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s as good as the Kindle, at least not yet. At launch, the Nook has the feel of a product with great potential that was rushed to market before it was fully ready.</p>

<p>Like the latest standard-size Kindle, which came out earlier this year, the Nook is a roughly 8-inch by 5-inch, ivory-colored plastic tablet that costs $259 and connects wirelessly to an online store. The two devices have essentially identical reading screens, 6 inches when measured diagonally, that allow for only monochrome text and gray-scale graphics, not color. Both come with two gigabytes of internal memory, enough to hold about 1,500 digital books.</p>
<p>Nook&#8217;s most obvious difference from Kindle is that it also boasts a second, smaller color screen beneath the main reading screen. This touch screen is used for navigating and for typing via an on-screen keyboard when performing searches or adding notes to books. Also, when the touch screen is dark, it can be swiped to turn pages instead of using the physical page-turning buttons at the sides of the main screen.</p>
<p>The competing Kindle (formerly called the Kindle 2, but now back to just Kindle) uses a joystick, Menu and Home buttons, and pop-up menus on the main screen for navigating. It has a physical keyboard below the screen for typing and can turn pages only using physical buttons.</p>

<p>Also, unlike the Kindle, the Nook lets you lend certain digital books to others for a limited period, an innovation that removes one of the most common complaints about buying books electronically instead of on paper.</p>
<p>Another big difference: Nook claims a catalog of just over one million digital books, versus 389,000 for the Kindle. But this is somewhat misleading, because over half of the Nook catalog is made up of free out-of-copyright titles published before 1923, the vast majority of which are likely to be of little interest to average readers. Barnes &#038; Noble refuses to say how many modern commercial titles it offers, or even whether it has more or fewer of these than Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>Amazon says it already has nearly 20,000 of the most popular such older books available and plans to add hundreds of thousands more in the coming months, to bring its total selection to more than one million.</p>
<p>Amazon also offers well over 100 newspapers and magazines and 7,500 blogs. Barnes &#038; Noble says it will have about 45 periodicals in the coming weeks, but no blogs.</p>

<p>Both devices offer downloads of most best-sellers, but in a random, unscientific test I performed using print books from around my house, I found Amazon&#8217;s commercial e-book catalog superior. Barnes &#038; Noble lacked digital versions of two recent historical biographies I own, and had no digital editions of the works of one of my favorite contemporary mystery writers, Donna Leon. Amazon had all these books in Kindle editions. Barnes &#038; Noble says titles like these are being added.</p>
<p>During my tests, I found the Nook slower, more cumbersome to use and less polished than the Kindle. I ran into various crashes and bugs. And, while the Kindle&#8217;s navigation system isn&#8217;t exactly world class, it ran circles around the Nook&#8217;s, despite the great possibilities offered by the latter&#8217;s use of the touch screen.</p>
<p>The Nook may be wonderful one day, but, as of today, it&#8217;s no match for the Kindle, despite advantages such as lending, because it&#8217;s more annoying to use.</p>
<p>For instance, the Nook constantly delayed taking me to books while the main screen displayed a message that said &#8220;formatting.&#8221; Its standard practice is to open books you select not at the actual start of the book, but at a description of the book. Turning pages inside books was slower than on the Kindle. Looking up a word in the built-in dictionary, a quick process on the Kindle, was far harder on the Nook. Even swiping the touch screen to turn pages would suddenly stop working for periods of time.</p>
<p>The good news for those who have ordered a Nook, which is currently sold out, is that its software can be updated, and Barnes &#038; Noble is promising to fix the problems, starting with a wirelessly delivered patch next week that it says will improve the speed a bit, get you closer to the start of the book, and repair some of the bugs. </p>
<p>Two things are worth noting here. First, I also criticized the design of the original Kindle and the original Sony (SNE) e-reader, both of which have improved in subsequent iterations. (Sony, which was in this market early, is promising to release its first wireless e-reader later this month.)</p>
<p>Second, the entire e-reader market is still in its infancy. The lack of color in books and periodicals alone is a huge drawback. One day, I suspect both of these products will look like a 1996 Palm (PALM) PDA does compared with an Apple (AAPL) iPhone. </p>
<p>The Nook is a bit shorter and narrower than the Kindle, but it is an ounce heavier and significantly thicker. It has a cleaner look, because the bezel around the screen is narrower and there is no physical keyboard. The touch screen adds a dash of color, though it often goes dark to save battery life.</p>
<p>Like the Kindle, the Nook has built-in cellular connectivity with no monthly charges. But it also adds Wi-Fi, which is free at Barnes &#038; Noble stores, though mostly unusable at other commercial hotspots, because the Nook lacks a Web browser that would allow you to log in. The Kindle has a crude Web browser, but no Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>Speaking of battery life, the Nook&#8217;s is worse than the Kindle&#8217;s. It claims about 10 days of typical use with wireless off, and just two days with wireless on. In my week of tests, with wireless on constantly, I had to charge it three times. Amazon rates the Kindle at 14 days of typical use with wireless off and seven days with wireless on, which squares with my own Kindle experience.</p>
<p>The Nook beats the Kindle in a few areas. Lending is a key one, though only about half of  the commercial titles are eligible for lending, you can lend each one only once to a given person, and loans expire after two weeks. In my tests, lending worked OK after a couple of false starts.</p>
<p>Another is that Barnes &#038; Noble takes advantage of its stores. In addition to getting free Wi-Fi, Nook owners who enter a Barnes &#038; Noble store can read books on their Nooks for free, and get help from staff members.</p>
<p>Unlike the Kindle, the Nook also has a slot for expandable memory cards and a replaceable battery. Barnes &#038; Noble also has companion PC, Mac, iPhone and BlackBerry software for reading e-books, even if you don&#8217;t own a Nook. Amazon has such software, so far, only for the iPhone and PC.</p>
<p>But, while Amazon will synchronize your last page read if you switch from reading a book on one device to using another, Barnes &#038; Noble lacks that capability yet, though it says it will have it soon.</p>
<p>One more thing: The latest standard-size Kindle allows wireless book purchasing in multiple countries. The Nook does so only in the U.S.</p>
<p>My recommendation on the Nook is to wait, even if you prefer its features to the Kindle&#8217;s. It&#8217;s not fully baked yet. </p>

<p>Right now, BoomTown is sitting right behind the very affable Jason Hirschhorn, chief product officer of MySpace, who is here to make one of the many partner announcements with Google at its &#8220;search event&#8221; in Silicon Valley today.</p>
<p>I also ran right into Twitter&#8217;s Biz Stone at the coffee stand. He is also here to talk about the new features Google (GOOG) is adding to its search repertoire, although he is remaining mum until the program starts in five minutes.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s about real-time search, of course, given that the partners visiting today are all real-time search folks.</p>
<p>The confab&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091207/liveblogging-the-google-confab-at-10-am-pt-searchtastic/">being held at the Computer History Museum</a> near the Googleplex HQ&#8211;is essentially Google&#8217;s rejoinder to last week&#8217;s event by Microsoft (MSFT), which announced a bunch of new features for its Bing search service, including mapping updates.</p>
<p>Of course, because it is Google, the sound system rocks, the food is better and it is more overproduced than &#8220;Dancing With the Stars.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:13 am PT:</strong> The event is opened by Marissa Mayer, who runs search products and user experience for Google.</p>
<p>And it takes exactly 13 seconds for there to be a classic Silicon Valley buzzword. Modes! Translation: It is how we use the Web.</p>
<p>Mayer is outlining Google&#8217;s key components in the future of search. Along with modes, they are media, language and personalization.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are a company that likes to launch early and often,&#8221; she said, adding that Google has launched 33 search innovations in 67 days.</p>
<p>In other words, take that, Bing. Oh, dear, giant Google just boasted about its innovation cred and is apparently a little worried about weensie Bing.</p>
<p><strong>10:18 am:</strong> Mayer welcomes Vic Gundotra, VP of engineering, who will talk about mobile search.</p>
<p>He begins by noting that no one knows where all the new innovations in computing will lead, much as no one got the Gutenberg press way back in the olden days.</p>
<p>Professor Gundotra then launches into a computing history lesson, with stops at Moore&#8217;s Law (better, faster, cheaper) and how one understood all the zillions of computing connections that would occur.</p>
<p>The &#8220;missing ingredient,&#8221; noted Gundotra, is the cloud.</p>
<p>Next, he moves to a demo to show where Google is headed. Gundotra nails a voice query on an Android phone about President Obama at the G8 Summit with the French president. Everyone cheers.</p>
<p>Gundotra now tries to top himself with a Mandarin query for McDonald&#8217;s in Beijing. He sticks it.</p>
<p>He then announces support for the voice search on mobile devices for Japan, bringing up a Japanese speaker.</p>
<p>One voice query is a very long one for a favorite restaurant in Tokyo near the Google office there. Does Google find it? Of course Google does.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our dreams at Google go way beyond what you just saw,&#8221; says Gundotra, who opines on a real-time interpreter on the phone. Of course, he demos the interpreter, which he said will show up sometime in 2010.</p>
<p>It works, again. Natch! These are big-brained dudes here at Google, so don&#8217;t mess with them.</p>
<p><strong>10:30 am:</strong> Gundotra moves to locations, which he says will be a key element of future versions of Google search. You know, Red Sox comes up in Boston, data appear for nearby stores for digital cameras.</p>
<p>He shows off the &#8220;Near Me Now&#8221; feature, which is kind of like those many Apple (AAPL) iPhone apps, like Yelp. It explores stuff nearby. It will be available on Google mobile maps for Android right away.</p>
<p>Next, he announces a Google Labs project called Google Goggles, which takes pictures of something and then identifies it. I have seen this kind of thing in a lot of labs at various tech companies.</p>
<p>Gundotra, who is a slick dude at presentations, uses the example of being a wine expert without being one. He scans a wine bottle and then Google quickly shows info on it.</p>
<p><em>Oooooh, aaaaaah.</em></p>
<p>Gundotra uses the service to identify a Japanese landmark successfully.</p>
<p>Someday, he predicts, your phone will be a &#8220;mouse pointer&#8221; to the world.</p>
<p><strong>10:42 am:</strong> Back to Mayer, who talks about media relevancy in search. Google Fellow Amit Singhal is the man on deck.</p>
<p>&#8220;What we&#8217;re going to announce today is one of the most exciting things in my career,&#8221; said Singhal, who first launches into a short history of information flow.</p>
<p>Campfires, more Gutenberg! Also some pictures of old Google servers. I feel so educated; plus, Singhal is pretty funny for a supergeek.</p>
<p>Now, he gets to the news: &#8220;We are here today to announce Google real-time search.&#8221;</p>
<p>The demo is launched and it shows news scrolling as it is produced. &#8220;This is the first time ever,&#8221; enthuses Singhal.</p>
<p>It looks cool, but reminds me a lot of old tickers that used to be in the newsroom at the Washington Post. You know, the kind of newspaper that Google is often accused of killing off.</p>
<p>Irony alert! I wonder if that will scroll up soon.</p>
<p>The scrolling also includes Twitter updates. One tweet by Googler Matt Cutts about the Google real-time search launch showed up immediately.</p>
<p>The latest results will be available on the search options and in preferences and will also be hyperlocal and mobile on the iPhone and Android.</p>
<p>&#8220;Real-time search becomes incredibly powerful, since it shows you exactly what you need in your geography,&#8221; said Singhal.</p>
<p>Singhal is a font of news. He also announces that Google Trends is moving out of the labs and will also show real-time results.</p>
<p>He launches into the &#8220;how&#8221; of how Google did all this. Well, it was really, <em>really</em> hard, said Singhal, because there are a badillion real-time pieces of data out there to analyze and render.</p>
<p>And which company, with its massive computing power, can make this relevant and hand over the info quickly? Three guesses, and the first two don&#8217;t count.</p>
<p>Recap: Real-time search, latest search option, update option, mobile real-time search and Google Trends in the real-time world.</p>
<p>&#8220;At Google we will not be satisfied,&#8221; said Singhal, until Google can get you info at the speed of light.</p>
<p><strong>11:07 am:</strong> Just to stick a true fork into anything Microsoft could come up with, Mayer comes back up and announces Google&#8217;s Facebook, MySpace and Twitter partnerships as part of the launch of real-time search.</p>
<p>Facebook will be sending in public feeds and MySpace is providing all of them, as is Twitter.</p>
<p>Google now has eyes and ears, says Mayer. When it gets a whole body, get ready to run for your life.</p>
<p><strong>Q&#038;A time!</strong></p>
<p>The first question is about whether Goggles could have facial recognition. Gundotra says Google could do that, but will not until the privacy issues are worked out. Operative thought here: Google is capable of doing this. Eek!</p>
<p>The next question is about advertising opportunities in these new features. Singhal does not really answer, but says businesses will develop.</p>
<p>The next question is about how much content Google is crawling. Answer: About a billion pages a day.</p>
<p>Gundotra adds that the first launch is only available on English-speaking locales. But it will move into other languages next year.</p>
<p>What about spammers taking advantage of real-time search? Oh, says Singhal, they will get a beat-down from Matt Cutts, who is in charge of spam-killing at Google.</p>
<p>Wouldn&#8217;t that make a good reality show? &#8220;The Spam Hunters!&#8221;</p>
<p>About questions on real-time partnerships, Mayer said Google wanted to be comprehensive.</p>
<p>Mayer will not disclose the details of any financial payments for these real-time feeds. Of course, Google is paying up.</p>
<p>And now a question about whether Google will limit development on non-Android phones. &#8220;Absolutely not,&#8221; says Gundrotra.</p>
<p>At last, a zinger question: Do you feel that Google will be responsible for the death of journalism and doesn&#8217;t that make Google a scary black hole of, presumably, evil?</p>
<p><em>Awkward!</em></p>
<p>Singhal casts about for an answer, which is mostly about bringing info to users, which is not an answer.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really about user empowerment,&#8221; he says. Uh-oh, we&#8217;re doomed!</p>
<p>Mayer jumps in nervously to shoot this meme down and says Google is about facilitation and not decimation.</p>
<p>The PR dude onstage also throws in the boilerplate about Google sending gazillions of clicks all over.</p>
<p>But the point is made: Today Google&#8211;which owns universal search&#8211;just made its big move in real-time search.</p>
<p>The next question is about the difference between Google&#8217;s practice of wanting people off the page and onto the Web and Microsoft Bing&#8217;s focus on topic pages of rich information.</p>
<p>Mayer is sticking with quick on and off for Google.</p>
<p>And what about junk information on the silly side that comes with more real-time search, like dead celebs who are not dead, or really untrue information on important issues?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a hard problem, says Singhal, who says Google is working on it.</p>
<p>What about disabling the real-time updates rather than just being able to turn them on and off. Nope, says Singhal. Mayer notes that this may change.</p>
<p>But the truth is: With the big search giant jumping in, real-time search is most definitely here to stay.</p>

<p>When BoomTown<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080227/kara-visits-seesmic-and-chats-with-loic-le-meur/"> went to visit serial entrepreneur Loïc Le Meur early last year</a> at his San Francisco HQ, he was stoked about the prospects of his &#8220;video conversation&#8221; community start-up called Seesmic.</p>
<p>That was especially due to the influx of $6 million into his bank account by high-profile angel investors like LinkedIn&#8217;s Reid Hoffman, former AOL head Steve Case, SoftTech VC Jeff Clavier, Zynga&#8217;s Mark Pincus, investor Ron Conway, FON founder Martin Varsavsky and others.</p>
<p>Fast-forward to today and the entire business plan of Seesmic has been upended, with the video part pretty much junked.</p>
<p>Now, Le Meur is focused almost entirely on his social media desktop client, as well as Web and mobile versions, which began as a dashboard for Twitter called twhirl.</p>
<p>If at first you don&#8217;t succeed, dump and change again&#8211;the motto of Silicon Valley!</p>
<p>Seesmic has added a lot more Web services to the client to make it stickier, such as announcing yesterday that it would <a href="http://blog.seesmic.com/2009/09/seesmic-desktop-version-06-updates.html">allow users to access and manage Facebook Pages</a>.</p>
<p>The idea behind Seesmic, as well as competitors such as TweetDeck, is to allow users to manage their various social media tools much like their email accounts.</p>
<p>And while the service&#8217;s desktop client software has been a focus, Le Meur is also pushing its Web and mobile versions, all in the hopes that the newest innovation is the right one.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a tour I did of Seesmic&#8217;s new HQ and a video interview I did with Le Meur about all the changes:</p>

New numbers Condé released today show that its September issues will be miserable across the board, with ad pages down anywhere from 17 percent to 47 percent. And that&#8217;s if you interpret the data favorably.</p>
<p>CEO Chuck Townsend said as much in a <a href="http://gawker.com/5318869/the-management-consultants-who-will-end-conde-nast-as-we-know-it?skyline=true&amp;s=x">memo</a> yesterday announcing that he&#8217;d hired McKinsey to figure out how to survive &#8220;in an emerging economy that is now predicted to be painfully slow in recovering.&#8221;</p>
<p>But when you see Condé&#8217;s projected numbers for its fall issues, which are traditionally bulging with ads, it&#8217;s even more startling. Particularly when you realize that the economy had already been slowing down a year ago (Disclosure: I do some free-lance work for Condé title Vanity Fair).</p>
<p>Take a look for yourself in the table below (click to enlarge): The numbers in the middle (faintly highlighted in blue) represent the year-over-year decline in ad pages, if you factor out the publisher&#8217;s special &#8220;Fashion Rocks&#8221; issues, which it gave up on last year. The more brutal numbers on the right are the &#8220;real&#8221; numbers. All of them are unpleasant.</p>
<p>Using the more favorable set of numbers, Teen Vogue is Condé&#8217;s relative star, down a mere 17 percent. And if Vogue was a publicly traded stock, it would have beaten expectations, since it came in above 400 pages&#8211;which is still down 29.7 percent (or more).</p>

<p>Pages, Apple&#8217;s word processing application, is also getting a bit of an update. Pages &rsquo;09 offers a full-screen view for the easily distracted writer, dynamic outlining, mail merge with Numbers&#8211;Apple&#8217;s spreadsheet program&#8211;and 40 new templates. Not the most exciting stuff, here, but decent additions nonetheless.</p>
<p>In Numbers, Apple (AAPL) has added some new categorization features&#8211;Table Categories, and, answering user requests, some 250 new formulas and functions. New charts, trend lines and other advance reporting options as well.</p>
<p>iWork is also migrating from the desktop to the cloud&#8211;in a sense. Via iWork.com, users can easily upload documents and share them with collaborators. Docs are viewable online. They can be downloaded. And collaborators can comment on them online. iWork.com is cross-platform (Mac and PC) and cross-browser. The online suite looks very much like the Mac-based suite.</p>
<p>iWork will run you $79, $49 if you purchase a new Mac. &#8220;This is the beginning of a new service,&#8221; Schiller noted, adding that it&#8217;s a beta and launches today, solo and as part of a $169 box set that includes iLife and Leopard.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When you hear that <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a> has released a new product, you think of a sleek Macintosh laptop, or perhaps a beautiful program for editing videos. But a spreadsheet? Not a spreadsheet. After all, expertise with spreadsheets is the sort of computing skill about which the &#8220;Mac guy&#8221; in Apple&#8217;s TV ads mocks the &#8220;PC guy.&#8221;</p>
<p>And yet, last week, Apple brought out a new spreadsheet program called Numbers, thus completing one of its least-known products: a productivity suite called iWork. The iWork &#8217;08 suite, which competes with the Macintosh version of Microsoft Office, also includes a word-processing program called Pages and a presentation program called Keynote. The two were upgraded last week. IWork costs $79, about half the price of the lowest-cost version of Microsoft Office, which sells for $149.</p>

<p>In the past 10 years, Apple has out-designed Microsoft and its hardware partners in a number of key areas. But can Apple really take on Microsoft in the category of productivity software, where Office rules on both Windows and the Mac? To find out, I&#8217;ve been testing the new iWork, which runs only on the Mac, against the Mac version of Office.</p>
<p>My verdict: iWork &#8217;08 is a nice product, capable of turning out sophisticated and attractive word-processing, presentation and spreadsheet documents. It can even read Microsoft Office documents, whether created on the Mac or on Windows computers, and can save documents in Microsoft Office formats so they can be opened in Office on the Mac or on Windows.</p>
<p>But iWork simply isn&#8217;t as powerful or versatile as Microsoft Office, especially when it comes to word processing and spreadsheets. And it suffers from a design that places far more emphasis on making documents look beautiful than on the nuts and bolts of the actual process of writing and number-crunching.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s one big omission in iWork: It has no integrated email, contacts and calendar module comparable to Outlook in Windows or to Entourage, the Outlook equivalent that&#8217;s a part of the Mac version of Microsoft Office. Apple decided to rely on the very good email, calendar and address book programs that it builds into every Mac.</p>
<p>But iWork has one big plus: It&#8217;s the first Mac office suite that can open (though not create) files in the new formats Microsoft introduced in the Windows version of Office earlier this year. The Mac version of Office won&#8217;t do that until Office 2008 is out in January.</p>
<p>The new Numbers spreadsheet has some refreshing innovation that makes it far more approachable for casual spreadsheet users than Microsoft Excel often is. Numbers allows you to place multiple spreadsheet tables, plus charts and graphics, on a blank canvas that you can arrange any way you want. Each of the spreadsheet tables functions like an Excel spreadsheet with individual cells able to hold numbers, text or formulas.</p>
<p>Numbers has some other nice features to make things simpler. Any cell meant to contain a value you type in can be controlled with a slider or up-and-down arrows, so you can rapidly see how different numeric values would alter calculations without a lot of retyping.</p>
<p>I also found that Numbers made it easier than Excel to sort columns, and to add or move columns and rows. It&#8217;s also easier to create formulas using the actual names of columns and rows rather than their number/letter coordinates. And Numbers lets you drag and drop common formulas, such as Sum and Average, to the bottom of a column of numbers.</p>
<p>For real spreadsheet jockeys, however, Numbers is wimpier than Excel. It has only about half as many functions for making calculations and doesn&#8217;t do pivot tables.</p>
<p>The Pages program was originally more of a page-layout program than a writing tool. The new version attempts to fix this imbalance with a less artsy word-processing mode. But the effort is only partly successful. It still de-emphasizes some writer-friendly features. For instance, its auto-correct function is much weaker than Word&#8217;s. Another example: In Word, to see how many words your document contains, you just glance at the bottom of the screen. In Pages, you must dig down into a submenu to find the answer. The command for showing invisible formatting marks also is harder to find than in Word.</p>
<p>The strongest part of iWork is Keynote, the presentation program, which still makes it easier than Microsoft&#8217;s PowerPoint does to make rich, beautiful slide shows. The new version isn&#8217;t a major overhaul, but it includes a new feature called Instant Alpha that makes it easy to eliminate unwanted backgrounds from photos.</p>
<p>In my tests, importing and exporting documents between iWork and Office worked fine for simple files. But fidelity isn&#8217;t always perfect, especially in Numbers, where missing Excel functions or Numbers-only features don&#8217;t carry over.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a Mac user with basic word-processing and spreadsheet needs, and a strong emphasis on design, iWork is good choice, especially if perfect compatibility with Microsoft Office isn&#8217;t a high priority. But for office-suite users more concerned with function than form, I&#8217;d recommend sticking with Office.</p>
