			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Microsoft has inked a new partnership with <a href="http://www.8coupons.com/">8coupons</a> to replace The Dealmap, which had been providing local offers to Bing Deals <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110303/bing-adds-daily-deals-to-search-results-through-partnership/">for about nine months</a>.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-161074" title="bingdeals" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/bingdeals-329x285.png" alt="" width="329" height="285" />The partnership understandably ended once Microsoft&#8217;s big search rival, Google, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110801/google-acquires-daily-deal-provider-for-less-than-6-billion-probably/">acquired The Dealmap in August</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;We can confirm that Bing is no longer partnering with The Dealmap and is now partnering with local and daily deal aggregator 8coupons,&#8221; a Microsoft spokesperson said. &#8220;We’re excited about the partnership with 8coupons and to be able to offer our customers access to great deals and discounts from across the Web &#8212; all in one place.&#8221;</p>
<p>A spokesperson for 8coupons also confirmed the partnership, adding that it started to replace The Dealmap a couple of weeks ago.</p>
<p>Rather than build a Groupon copycat as Google and Amazon have done, Microsoft has decided to partner with an aggregator that collects offers from various providers around the Web. Deals delivered by 8coupons come from Restaurant.com, Yelp, LivingSocial and GiltCity, among many others, as shown <a href="http://www.bing.com/shopping/deals?q=deals&amp;sscope=sdeals&amp;FORM=PGCA">on the Bing Deals homepage</a>.</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s purchase of The Dealmap was relatively small, especially compared to its failed $6 billion offer to buy Groupon. So far, The Dealmap is being used for the underpinnings of a pilot project that Google Offers has rolled out in the Bay Area.</p>
<p>In San Francisco, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111027/google-pumps-up-its-groupon-killer-by-adding-more-than-a-dozen-partners/">Google works with more than a dozen deal providers</a> so that it can offer a variety of deals every day. It believes that in order to have relevant offers for all types of consumers, you need a lot of good deals, not just one a day.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, Google and Mozilla said they had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111220/google-resigns-firefox-search-royalty-deal/">struck a deal to renew their search royalty agreement</a> for another three years.</p>
<p>What the pair declined to add: The search giant will pay just under $300 million per year to be the default choice in Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox browser, a huge jump from its previous arrangement, due to competing interest from both Yahoo and Microsoft.</p>
<p>Sources said this total amount &#8212; just under $1 billion &#8212; was the minimum revenue guarantee for delivering search queries garnered from consumers using Firefox.</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s main rival in the bid, sources said, was Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search service, which was aggressively trying to hip-check it from the main search spot on the browser.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because the software giant has been spending a lot of money in efforts to grow Bing&#8217;s market share in the search market.</p>
<p>Microsoft, of course, also owns the still-dominant Internet Explorer browser, but Google&#8217;s Chrome has recently been making major gains over both IE and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox.</p>
<p>Still, Mozilla&#8217;s recent negotiations with both companies was about search market share.</p>
<p>Yahoo was also in the mix, even though Microsoft powers its search technology, because a hookup with Firefox was considered a plus in holding on to its declining search market share. </p>
<p>But the deal, which was being pushed hard by Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving and its search head Shashi Seth, was determined to be too costly for Yahoo.</p>
<p>Costly indeed, since the new price is much higher than Google had previously ponied up to Mozilla. In 2010, Google contributed 84 percent of Mozilla&#8217;s $123 million in revenue.</p>
<p>A previous version of the partnership had expired at the end of November, and the new talks were done against a backdrop of simmering tension between Google and Mozilla over Chrome.</p>
<p>As Liz Gannes wrote earlier this week:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Since the first search royalty deal was signed in 2008, Google&#8217;s own Chrome browser has become a significant competitor. Just last month, Chrome overtook Firefox in global usage for the first time, according to StatCounter. Both browsers &#8212; software which is used to navigate the Internet &#8212; have about 25 percent market share.</p></blockquote>
<p>Even with the new default deal with Google, Mozilla still also has partnerships with other search providers, including Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, Amazon and eBay.</p>
<p>Of course, everybody declined to comment on my queries to hand over all the financial deets <em>stat</em>.</p>
<p>But Google&#8217;s SVP of Search, Alan Eustace, said in a statement: &#8220;Mozilla has been a valuable partner to Google over the years and we look forward to continuing this great partnership in the years to come.&#8221;</p>
<p>Great, perhaps, but also much more expensive &#8212; so presumably Firefox is worth it.</p>

<p>Mozilla is set to announce that it has signed a new three-year agreement for Google to be the default search option in its Firefox browser.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a critical renewal for the Silicon Valley software maker, since its earlier deal with the search giant has been a major source of revenue to date.</p>
<p>The companies said the specific terms of the commercial agreement are not being released. But, in 2010, Google contributed 84 percent of Mozilla&#8217;s $123 million in revenue.</p>
<p>A previous version of the arrangement had expired at the end of November. Mozilla <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111205/mozilla-says-google-relationship-in-active-negotiations/">said at the time</a> that it was in &#8220;active negotiations&#8221; with Google. </p>
<p>The relationship has not been without some tension of late. Since the first search royalty deal was signed in 2008, Google&#8217;s own Chrome browser has become a significant competitor. Just last month, Chrome overtook Firefox in global usage for the first time, <a href="http://gs.statcounter.com/press/chrome-overtakes-firefox-globally-for-first-time">according to StatCounter</a>. <p>In a deal that was struck some time ago and is close to fruition, BermanBraun is prepping three major Web properties for AOL that will focus on pets, men and, interestingly, the weather.</p>
<p>After I inquired, AOL confirmed that the Hollywood production company &#8212; headed by former Yahoo and ABC exec Lloyd Braun and former Paramount exec Gail Berman &#8212; will debut the trio of sites around March. The new sites will use rich features and a slick design to attract premium advertisers.</p>
<p>The pair will jointly sell the advertising, but the sites themselves will be operated by BermanBraun in cooperation with AOL&#8217;s media unit, the Huffington Post Media Group. The deal was struck in late 2010, before AOL bought the Huffington Post for $300 million in January of this year.</p>
<p>While AOL has partnered with many outside sites, this will be the most prominent one since that acquisition.</p>
<p>Since then, much of the new content development on AOL has been aimed at drastically increasing the number of sites with that brand. There have been more than two dozen of those since March.</p>
<p>In this case, the Huffington Post Media Group, run by Arianna Huffington, has typically either created new topic sites or relaunched old AOL ones.  </p>
<p>This week, for example, the company rejiggered AOL TV as HuffPost TV, as well as announcing El Huffington Post, an international Spanish-language version of the Huffington Post that will debut in early 2012, in partnership with El País.</p>
<p>The BermanBraun effort, though, is more independent and large-scale. It will feature extensive video and heavy use of imagery. Huffington Post will be involved in editorial selection, and has been working closely with the firm on incorporating social elements.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a very dynamic and collaborative partnership &#8212; we&#8217;ve worked together on everything from design to picking the editors,&#8221; said Roy Sekoff, founding editor of the Huffington Post Media Group, about the arrangement. &#8220;BermanBraun brings a distinctive approach to their sites, and we&#8217;ve helped infuse that with our focus on real-time, social, and building community.&#8221; </p>
<p>Sekoff declined to give more details, such as the names of the sites. (They won&#8217;t be HuffPost Pets, HuffPost Weather and HuffPost Dudes, though!) </p>
<p>Pets could be a strong category if done in a new way, especially if designed with new tablet devices in mind. And weather, to my mind, is a sleeper category if reimagined freshly.</p>
<p>BermanBraun &#8212; which also develops television shows and movies &#8212; has a lot of experience in the online content arena. It has previously created Web sites for Microsoft&#8217;s MSN unit, including the high-profile celebrity site Wonderwall.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see how the collaboration turns out. In the meantime, here&#8217;s my favorite weather song &#8212; Lena Horne rules! &#8212; to enjoy until the three sites launch:</p>

<p>Originally, as I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110310/exclusive-former-aolers-steve-case-and-ted-leonsis-raising-400-million-growth-equity-fund/">reported in March</a>, the growth fund was going to be $400 million, but more was added due to investor interest.</p>
<p>The figure is a large one for a new venture and includes two dozen limited partners.</p>
<p>According to a letter to its partners, which I posted below in its entirety, Revolution said it will make 10 to 12 investments over five years in the consumer space of about $25 million to $50 million and mostly on the East coast, where its principals live and work.</p>
<p>The fund will focus on the &#8220;speed-up&#8221; stage &#8212; which is apparently just past venture stage and not yet in growth.</p>
<p>While both Leonsis and Case have done a lot of investing in the Web 2.0 space both together (Revolution Money) and apart (the Groupon and LivingSocial social buying sites, respectively), this is the first time the pair of well-known Web pioneers are creating a more formal investment partnership.</p>
<p>The pair are also investing $75 million of their own money in total in the Revolution Growth fund. </p>
<p>Revolution&#8217;s three partners said they will also be deeply involved with entrepreneurs at its companies. </p>
<p>&#8220;We are not just investors, but former CEOs and business builders who have the expertise and passion to be actively involved with the companies we back,&#8221; said the letter. &#8220;By making only a few investments each year, we will have the time to really help the entrepreneurs with whom we partner.&#8221;</p>

<p>In a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111117/hasta-la-vista-stock-options-heres-the-zynga-sec-filing/">new filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission</a> concerning its upcoming IPO, Zynga is expected to unveil two key management and board changes at the online gaming phenom:</p>
<p>Chief Business Officer Owen Van Natta &#8212; who came to the San Francisco-based start-up several years ago to help CEO Mark Pincus grow it and develop it &#8212; will step down from his job and become a strategic adviser focusing on major partnerships. He&#8217;ll still remain board member at Zynga, but will give up millions of pre-IPO shares by moving out of his operational role.</p>
<p>And director and venture investor Brad Feld will leave the the board, which VCs sometime do as companies move to a public offering and add members with more specific business experience. </p>
<p>In his place, longtime entrepreneur and investor Sunil Paul, who founded a company called FreeLoader with Pincus many moons ago, will join the board.</p>
<p>Zynga confirmed the changes to me in a statement by Pincus: </p>
<p>&#8220;Owen is a valuable business partner. He&#8217;s made great contributions to Zynga and continues to be an important part of our team.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sources said the changes related to Van Natta around are not part of a recent controversy around a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204621904577018373223480802.html">Wall Street Journal story</a> about clawing back of some share options grants of early Zynga employees who had become less involved in the company. While the company cannot actually take back already vested shares owned by those staffers, the article has put a lot of scrutiny on Zynga and raised questions about how to cope with the kind of hyper-growth some Internet firms experience.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s certainly been the kind of rocket ride Zynga has been on, as it has grown from a small social gaming company on Facebook to a high-profile public company.</p>
<p>Zynga is in the final stages of its IPO process, answering questions from the SEC that are typical. If all goes well, Zynga execs are expected to go on a road show after the Thanksgiving and go public by the end of the year at a market valuation of close to $20 billion.</p>
<p>That was different from when Van Natta officially <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100813/zyngas-newest-deal-snagging-myspace-facebook-vet-owen-van-natta/">got to Zynga in the spring of last year</a> &#8212; after a rocky experience running the doomed Myspace. At the time, he told me at the time that planned to be focused on scaling the business and did not consider himself a long-term operating executive.</p>
<p>Since then, he has helped Pincus hire a series of experienced gaming execs, including a chief operating officer, a chief marketing officer and others.</p>
<p>Zynga was Van Natta&#8217;s third high-profile Web company in recent years. He was a top early exec for Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook until <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080219/owen-van-natta-to-leave-facebook/">early 2008</a>, and in 2009 he took over News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090422/former-facebook-exec-van-natta-set-to-take-over-at-myspace-as-founder-dewolfe-steps-down/">MySpace</a>, a job that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100210/myspace-ceo-van-natta-was-fired-by-news-corp-digital-head-miller-in-late-afternoon-meeting/">lasted less than a year</a>. </p>
<p>Early in his career, Van Natta was also was a top strategy, marketing and deal exec for Amazon, which bought an early social networking start-up called PlanetAll that he worked at.</p>
<p>It will now be interesting to see what Van Natta does next, but it is unlikely he will take a permanent position. He is a longtime angel investor in Silicon Valley, including in hot start-ups such as Asana and still holds a significant stake in Facebook. </p>
<p>But, in moving out of his job at Zynga, he will be giving up many millions of shares of a rich trove he was given when he arrived at the company. That said, Van Natta already owns millions of accelerated vested shares and will get another large grant as a board member.</p>
<p>Translation: Don&#8217;t cry for Mr. Van Natta, Silicon Valley &#8212; he made $42 million last year from Zynga shares alone.</p>

<p>Memo to Flipboard, as well as Pulse, CNN&#8217;s Zite and AOL&#8217;s Editions: You might want to make some room in the already-crowded news and social reader space, because you&#8217;re about to get some bigfoot company.</p>
<p>Next Wednesday, according to sources close to the situation, Yahoo will finally officially unveil its offering, called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110210/yahoos-got-a-digital-newstand/">Livestand</a>.</p>
<p>And perhaps as early as next week or in the weeks soon after, Google will also weigh in with its version of the genre &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110915/its-called-google-propeller-and-its-aimed-at-flipboard-and-facebook-too/">code-named Propeller</a> &#8212; which also might be the product&#8217;s name. Another moniker under strong consideration: Currents.</p>
<p>As I have previously reported, Google Propeller is an HTML5 reader for the Apple iPad and Android &#8212; essentially a souped-up version of similar apps such as Flipboard, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">AOL&#8217;s Editions</a>, Zite (which was just <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110830/zite-sold-to-cnn-for-just-over-20-million/">bought by Time Warner&#8217;s CNN</a>) and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110616/pulse-gets-quicker-with-9m-in-funding/">Pulse</a>. </p>
<p>All these apps are part of the drastically changing habits of media consumers, helping users better navigate numerous social and media feeds &#8212; such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as news sites and more &#8212; using handsome interfaces and touch technologies on tablet devices.</p>
<p>Flipboard, the most prominent and elegant of these offerings, is now available only on the Apple iPad. </p>
<p>Flipboard&#8217;s traction among elite users, along with its high-level design ethos and strong reviews, is why Google tried to buy the well-funded company last year, sources said.</p>
<p>But Flipboard &#8212; which is backed by some of tech&#8217;s biggest venture players, who have invested <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">more than $60 million at a $200 million valuation</a> &#8212; declined the kind offer.</p>
<p>At the time, sources said, Google told Flipboard execs that if it did not buy the start-up, it planned to do a version of its own.</p>
<p>Hence, after I heard about the product earlier this year, I dubbed it the <em>Flipinator</em>.</p>

<p>According to sources, Propeller will launch with a plethora of media partners, as well as integration into the Google+ social network. The aim of the search giant is to offer media companies easy tools for publishing content on these devices, as well as a better path to monetization.</p>
<p>That is essentially the same plan at Yahoo, which has been working on Livestand with hopes of it being a product that will woo publishers into tight collaboration with the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.yadvertisingblog.com/blog/2011/02/16/video-demo-livestand-from-yahoo/">Livestand was announced</a> by Yahoo&#8217;s now-fired CEO Carol Bartz in February, at a speech at the World Mobile Congress in Spain.</p>
<p>At the time, Bartz demoed a magazinelike platform that would allow publishers to put up content easily and give users the ability to personalize their selections based on search history and interests.</p>
<p>Bartz called it &#8220;content in context.&#8221; (You can see the demo video below.)</p>
<p>But while Bartz promised the product within three months, development has been slowed by its complex technologies, bugs and the need to sign on publishers. </p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving is pushing the product hard as a way for the company to reinvigorate its media products.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear how many publishers Yahoo will have at launch, and neither are the distribution plans, beyond flacking it from the Web site and being present in app stores.</p>
<p>Google, on the other hand, has its Android platform to push out Propeller, although it all must work as well on Apple&#8217;s iPad, which is the dominant tablet on the market.</p>
<p>But just because both Yahoo and Google are big companies is by no means a guarantee of success &#8212; think Yahoo 360 or Google Wave or Buzz &#8212; and their lateness might be a hindrance.</p>
<p>And, in fact, other news reader apps are much further along. The leader, Flipboard, has already had four million downloads and 50 partnerships with leading publishers.</p>
<p>It also has started to introduce rich advertising products and, perhaps most importantly, has tight social integration with Twitter and Facebook.</p>
<p>There will be social elements on both Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand and Google&#8217;s Propeller. But news reading will be stressed more, making them more like Pulse, a tiny but highly innovative start-up.</p>
<p>Each of the existing apps will presumably compete by adding on more features. Pulse recently added <a href="http://blog.pulse.me/your-news-everywhere-sync-sources-to-your-pul-0">cross-platform, cross-device syncing</a>, while Flipboard is close to unveiling <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110421/pre-200-million-valuation-flipboards-mike-mccue-at-sxsw-the-full-onstage-video/">an iPhone version</a> it has said it was working on.</p>
<p>Yahoo and Google PR declined comment.</p>

<p><a href="http://corp.aol.com/2010/05/12/jared-grusd2/">Jared Grusd</a>, AOL&#8217;s SVP of business development and chief of strategy, is leaving the New York Internet giant to work at Spotify, according to sources close to the situation. </p>
<p>At AOL, according to his bio, Grusd &#8220;oversees the organization responsible for all domestic and international strategic partnerships and commercial alliances for AOL and each of its operating units. He is also responsible for identifying and evaluating new corporate strategies and opportunities for the company.&#8221;</p>
<p>The marathon fiend and former Google exec &#8212; who held top legal-deal jobs there &#8212; also serves on AOL&#8217;s Executive Management Team.</p>
<p>It is not clear what the well-respected Grusd will be doing at the online music service, which has been expanding its executive ranks as it has moved aggressively into the U.S. market. But sources said it was a high-level position in New York.</p>
<p>Spotify <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111007/spotify-lands-a-biz-dev-guy-clear-channels-gerrit-meier/">recently hired former Clear Channel exec Gerrit Meier</a> as GM of distribution and partnerships, reporting to U.S. head Ken Parks. </p>
<p>Spotify also just scooped up former AOL sales head <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110915/aols-old-ad-boss-lands-at-spotify/">Jeff Levick</a> &#8212; another Google alum &#8212; as its chief advertising officer.</p>
<p>The departure of Grusd further thins out the exec ranks at AOL, which is still mired in a turnaround under the leadership of CEO Tim Armstrong (yes, he too is a former Googler!).</p>
<p>I lobbed a query into AOL PR for comment, and am awaiting news of my news.</p>

<p>You gotta hand it to those geniuses over at the Googleplex, thinking up adorkable names for all their various plots and schemes.</p>
<p>And for its latest look-see of the Yahoo situation, it has revived an old one: &#8220;Project Porcupine,&#8221; presumably from the old joke about how you hug a porcupine.</p>
<p><em>Very</em> carefully. </p>
<p>Or maybe you don&#8217;t hug it at all, which is why all the rumors about the search giant hooking up with some unnamed private equity firms have been so unclear and, well, hard to grab ahold of.</p>
<p>According to sources, there are three clear aspects of what is actually going on:</p>
<p>1. Interest in using Google&#8217;s vast cash hoard as part of an investment it would make in a deal &#8212; meaning the company was approached, which it is, often.</p>
<p>2. Desire of Google&#8217;s crafty Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora to perhaps find a clever way to get ahold of Yahoo&#8217;s display inventory to add to Google&#8217;s own fast-growing DoubleClick display advertising subsidiary &#8212; meaning Arora has been making the rounds at Yahoo to gauge interest.</p>
<p>3. Pure enjoyment in messing with Microsoft execs &#8212; who are now allied with Yahoo via its Bing search technology &#8212; as well as getting up any price the software giant would have to fork over to be part of any consortium that will be cobbled together in what is sure to be a hopelessly complex deal.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111025/yahoogle-redux-why-project-porcupine-means-someones-definitely-going-to-lose-an-eye-this-time/yahoogle-3/" rel="attachment wp-att-136389"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/10/yahoogle.png" alt="" title="yahoogle" width="192" height="58" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-136389" /></a></p>
<p>Whether incoming or outgoing or just an early version of Mischief Night, any one of these options &#8212; while interesting to contemplate &#8212; is certainly fraught for Google. </p>
<p>Remember the trouble three years ago when Google tried to do a simple search-advertising partnership with Yahoo, in order to pull it out of the clutches of Microsoft?</p>
<p>That effort ended with a resounding <em>oh-no-you-don&#8217;t</em> by the Justice Department, which <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20081105/google-dumps-yahoo-which-should-come-as-a-shock-only-to-yahoo/">promised an antitrust lawsuit was awaiting</a> such a move to bring together the No. 1 and No. 2 search services.</p>
<p>And if it was a no-no then, any formal relationship or even arm&#8217;s-length investment in Yahoo by Google would inevitably be more closely scrutinized this time around. </p>
<p>In fact, what I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20080417/microhoo-yahoo-and-google-play-house/">wrote in 2008</a> applies a dozen times more emphatically today: </p>
<p>&#8220;It is bad for advertisers, it is bad for consumers, it is bad for innovation, no matter how well-intentioned Google is.&#8221;</p>
<p>Fast forward to today, after Google has already played a worrisome game of chicken with regulators over a number of acquisition deals &#8212; which makes trying to bring back Yahoogle akin to reaching for the third rail.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not what it&#8217;s going to do, in truth, because &#8212; even though Yahoo is still a tempting target &#8212; there is usually only one outcome to hugging a porcupine. </p>
<p><em>Ouch.</em></p>

<p>That would be Apple&#8217;s SVP of worldwide product marketing <strong>Phil Schiller</strong> and former Vice President <strong>Al Gore</strong>, who round out the stellar list of speakers at our upcoming <strong>AsiaD</strong> conference.</p>
<p>Taking place from Oct. 19 to 21 in Hong Kong, the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110809/more-asiad-speakers-sony-google-microsoft-hollywood-huawei-and-hot-sv-start-ups/?refcat=asiad">lineup is already impressive</a>, with a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110912/even-more-asiad-speakers-yahoos-yang-htcs-wang-samsungs-hong-and-more/">mix of speakers</a> from China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, as well as Silicon Valley and elsewhere.</p>

<p>Schiller, who reports to Apple&#8217;s CEO Tim Cook (and before that, Steve Jobs) is a member of the executive team of the tech icon, where he has worked for 17 years. He is responsible for a swath of Apple&#8217;s outward-facing businesses, including product marketing, developer relations and business marketing. </p>
<p>Today, in fact, he was onstage at Apple&#8217;s iPhone event, outlining some of its new product offerings. In addition, Apple just opened its first retail store in Hong Kong. </p>
<p>Gore, who had a memorable interview at the fourth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in 2006, needs little introduction. The former VP and Nobel Peace Prize winner is now chairman of Current TV and also continues as a prominent environmental activist. </p>
<p>Gore is on the board of Apple, while also being a senior adviser to Google, which is a neat trick. At the same time, he is a partner in the famed Silicon Valley venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins, and co-founder and chairman of Generation Investment Management, a partnership that is focused on sustainable investing.</p>
<p>And, as most people know, he knows a thing or two about the Internet. </p>
<p>Walt Mossberg and I could not think of two better people to add to the lineup we have for <strong>AsiaD</strong>, which has very few seats left.</p>

<p>Longtime media and Internet exec Bob Pittman has been named CEO of radio broadcast and outdoor advertising giant Clear Channel, the company announced today.</p>
<p>Pittman &#8212; who has been chairman of Clear Channel&#8217;s media and entertainment platforms after making an investment in the company less than a year ago &#8212; will join the board of directors of CC Media Holdings, Clear Channel Communications and Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings, as executive chairman.  </p>
<p>Clear Channel&#8217;s holdings include a huge parcel of radio stations across the U.S., along with a number of digital properties and a big global outdoor advertising business.</p>
<p>Pittman &#8212; the former MTV wunderkind who started in radio at 15 years old as an announcer at a station in his native Mississippi &#8212; has not been in a top job like this one since he resigned from the then-AOL Time Warner as its COO in the midst of the botched merger mishegas almost a decade ago.</p>
<p>Since then, Pittman has been doing a range of things, including making canny investments in a variety of Internet start-ups such as Zynga and DailyCandy, and even in a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20091016/its-another-tequila-start-up-bob-pittmans-new-venture/">high-end tequila company</a> via the Pilot Group, a New York-based private investment firm.</p>
<p>He made his own investment in Clear Channel last year and has since upped his involvement, which resulted in the latest move to CEO.</p>
<p>&#8220;I swore I would never work like this again, but when something gets me this stimulated, I knew I wanted to get into it again,&#8221; said Pittman, in an interview with me yesterday. &#8220;I think this company has everything it needs to be a great media company in the new media landscape.&#8221;</p>
<p>That will include a range of new initiatives, including recent partnerships with Facebook and more. </p>
<p>&#8220;We want to move like an entrepreneur and have the assets of a big media company,&#8221; said Pittman. &#8220;I am an addict for this challenge.&#8221;</p>

Pittman joined Clear Channel in November 2010 as an investor and the company&#8217;s Chairman of Media and Entertainment Platforms. Pittman will join the Board of Directors of CC Media Holdings, Inc. and Clear Channel Communications, Inc.; in addition, he will join the Board of Directors of Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings, Inc., as its Executive Chairman. <p><strong>Clear Channel Radio</strong>, which serves 150 cities through 850 owned radio stations and an additional 100 cities and 4,000 stations through its syndicated Premier Radio Networks products. Clear Channel Radio also includes:</p>
<p>* <strong>Clear Channel Digital</strong>, which develops and operates iHeartRadio, the free, industry-leading digitalradio product that combines access to all of Clear Channel&#8217;s live broadcast and digital-only radio stations as well as user-created Custom Stations. <p>Think about the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110831/doj-seeks-to-block-att-t-mobile-merger/">federal government&#8217;s blocking of the $39 billion AT&#038;T and T-Mobile merger</a> and you might want to reread Google&#8217;s blog today, penned in reaction to the news that the Justice Department is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110928/feds-taking-close-look-at-google-motorola-deal/">making a second request</a> for information about its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is pretty routine,&#8221; wrote Google&#8217;s Motorola integration exec <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110924/googles-woodside-to-lead-motorola-mobility-integration/">Dennis Woodside</a>. &#8220;We&#8217;ve gotten these kind of requests before.&#8221;</p>
<p>Maybe Google has (and it has with other purchases) &#8212; but in actuality, only four percent of transactions got such a follow-up request from regulators.</p>
<p>To be fair, it is much more common in high-profile, big-money deals like this one, but it means a longer closing period and more uncertainty around the Android mobile ecosystem until it&#8217;s done. </p>
<p>Still, Google has good reason to be patient. Despite tough criticism and brutal lobbying, it won approval from Justice for its $700 million deal to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110413/google-ita-software-acquisition-now-complete/">buy flight data service ITA Software</a> in April, after nine months of scrutiny and a number of conditions imposed.</p>
<p>And the search giant waited out an intense six-month Federal Trade Commission approval process last year for its $750 million acquisition of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100521/ftc-gives-google-admob-deal-green-light-a-big-bouquet-of-flowers-sent-to-apple/">mobile advertising start-up AdMob</a>. It had an even harder time with the FTC&#8217;s nod of its 2007 <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20070502/microsoft-247/">DoubleClick purchase</a> for $3.1 billion.</p>
<p>One that it lost &#8212; an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20080410/microhoo-jesus-is-coming-look-busy/">obvious bridge too far</a> that I dubbed <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20081105/google-dumps-yahoo-which-should-come-as-a-shock-only-to-yahoo/">Yahoogle</a> &#8212; was Google&#8217;s 2008 effort to meld a troubling partnership with Yahoo in search advertising.</p>
<p>So, we&#8217;ll see soon enough which way D.C. &#8212; which just had Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt up to the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110921/liveblogging-googles-schmidt-at-senate-antitrust-hearing/">Senate for an antitrust hearing chit-chat</a> &#8212; will go.</p>

<p>Since we announced our plans to acquire Motorola Mobility, we&#8217;ve been excited about the positive reaction to the proposed deal &#8212; particularly from our partners who have told us that they&#8217;re enthusiastic about our defense of the Android ecosystem.</p>
<p>And as David Drummond said when we announced our plans in August, we&#8217;re confident that this deal will be approved. We believe very strongly this is a pro-competitive transaction that is good for Motorola Mobility, good for consumers, and good for our partners. </p>
<p>That said, we know that close scrutiny is part of the process and we&#8217;ve been talking to the U.S. Department of Justice over the past few weeks. Today we received what is called a &#8220;second request,&#8221; which means that the DOJ is asking for more information so that they can continue to review the deal. (This is pretty routine; we&#8217;ve gotten these kind of requests before.)</p>
<p>While this means we won&#8217;t be closing right away, we&#8217;re confident that the DOJ will conclude that the rapidly growing mobile ecosystem will remain highly competitive after this deal closes. We&#8217;ll be working closely and cooperatively with them as they continue their review.</p></blockquote>

<p>The firing of Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz leaves open one of the bigger and more difficult jobs in tech &#8212; one that has taken its toll on many.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, rapper Snoop Dogg stepped right up to the Twitter plate yesterday, as soon as news broke of the ouster.</p>

<p>Thus, while the Yahoo board has yet to begin a search, I have already been hard at work on selecting the next CEO. </p>
<p>(Last time, the company took <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20081118/yahoos-peter-chernin-principle-and-other-ceo-choices/">none of my suggestions</a>, but after the most recent result, the directors might want to pay mind!)</p>
<p>Sources said Yahoo is looking for an experienced Internet type, either from inside or outside the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo has put its flag in the ground as a digital media company with a technology base,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The job requires big buckets of expertise and needs someone who will grow the company.&#8221;</p>

Both Yahoo and I had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101117/enter-the-chernin-former-news-corp-president-and-coo-in-yahoo-what-if-mix/">picked him</a> when co-founder Jerry Yang stepped down as CEO almost three years ago, and he had declined the offer. This time, perhaps a big chunk of the company and total autonomy would work, even if making a hit like &#8220;Rise of the Planet of the Apes&#8221; is more fun.</p>

<p><strong>Sheryl Sandberg:</strong> The COO of Facebook is sort of the anti-Bartz, with a smooth and efficient persona, and she is an experienced tech exec. But the former Google exec is at a place of growth at the social networking site, and is unlikely to want to leave the big show, especially since a blockbuster IPO is looming.</p>

<p><strong>Jason Kilar:</strong> The Hulu CEO is in the midst of the process of selling the premium video service, with Yahoo as a bidder. While he has some tense relations with the studios, Kilar is top notch in his dedication to consumer products, and has a lot of experience from his stint at Amazon, too. </p>

<p><strong>Dan Rosensweig:</strong> Currently CEO of IPO-headed Chegg textbook rental service, the former Yahoo exec never got a chance to run the company as its top leader. Well-connected and still well-liked by the troops at Yahoo, it still would be pretty hard for him to go home again.</p>

<p><strong>Jon Miller:</strong> The chief digital exec at News Corp. almost got the CEO spot years ago when Carl Icahn was agitating for change at Yahoo, before Time Warner blocked him via a noncompete. With the mishegas at the media giant, and dwindling digital businesses there, it might be a good escape hatch for Miller.</p>

The search giant was founded in her garage, and she has been a key part of its success since then. Wojcicki is also an understated class act in hey-look-at-me Silicon Valley.</p>

The news app start-up could be a good addition to Yahoo, and McCue, the former Netscape and Microsoft exec who is well-liked in the Internet scene, would be, too.</p>

<p><strong>Joanne Bradford:</strong> The former Yahoo advertising head bolted Bartz&#8217;s regime early on to run revenue for Demand Media. Well-liked in the ad business, she also knows where all the bodies are buried at Yahoo. Since ads and media are key at the company, she&#8217;d make an interesting choice.</p>

<p><strong>Yusuf Mehdi:</strong> The Microsoft online exec would also be a left-field candidate to run Yahoo, given his even-keeled personality and longtime experience in the sector. And, though pricey, Mehdi&#8217;s impact on Bing search has been important. But he&#8217;s also been involved in the software giant&#8217;s lackluster ad and search partnership and still has not turned around the situation at MSN.</p>

In fact, Johnson was the architect of the idea of Yahoo running the media and Microsoft running the tech.</p>

But the well-regarded exec &#8212; he&#8217;s a snazzy dresser, too &#8212; ran one of the Internet&#8217;s top digital ad agencies and now has tech chops from the content delivery network.</p>
<p>Memo to Yahoo board: I have a million more ideas, from former Viacom exec Tom Freston to former Yahoo board member Eric Hippeau. Or why not bring back a passel of former Yahoos to advise, such as former CEO Terry Semel or former president Sue Decker?</p>
<p>Or Oprah! I hear Winfrey will be in Silicon Valley later this week, and she has a lot more free time now. </p>

<p>After our grand tour of Asia last week &#8212; with stops in <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110803/asiad-adventures-walt-and-kara-in-seoul-video/">Korea</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110806/asiad-adventures-japan-edition-walt-and-kara-visit-digital-tokyo-video/">Japan</a> &#8212; it seems like a perfect time to update the speaker list for our upcoming <a href="http://allthingsd.com/conferences/asiad/about/"><strong>AsiaD</strong></a> conference in Hong Kong in October.</p>
<p>As Walt Mossberg and I said, we are trying to mix both U.S.-based speakers with a pan-Asian selection of speakers from across the region, and the new additions are just that.</p>
<p>For the international confab &#8212; this one will be held Oct. 19-21 &#8212; we&#8217;ve already <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110711/and-so-the-asiad-speakers-begin-google-alibaba-twitter-asus-nvidia-and-more-to-come/?refcat=asiad">announced</a> a great lineup, including Alibaba&#8217;s <strong>Jack Ma</strong>; Google Android head <strong>Andy Rubin</strong>; Twitter inventor and product guru, as well as Square co-founder and CEO, <strong>Jack Dorsey</strong>; Nvidia founder and CEO <strong>Jen-Hsun Huang</strong>; and Asus Chairman <strong>Jonny Shih</strong>. </p>
<p>Now, to add to that terrific lineup:</p>

<p><strong>Kazuo &#8220;Kaz&#8221; Hirai</strong> is widely considered the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110310/sony-picks-possible-heir-to-stringer-in-realignment/">second in command at the consumer electronics giant Sony</a>, in charge of its key computer entertainment division, as well as now serving as executive deputy president of the whole company. In that role, the dynamic exec is at the nexus of the Japanese company&#8217;s efforts around tablets, smartphones, gaming and more. As Sony struggles to reassert its dominance over the arena, Hirai will be a key player in that effort.</p>

<p><strong>Bradley Horowitz</strong> &#8212; as head of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110705/google-exec-is-now-really-plus-one/">product management for Google+</a>, the search giant&#8217;s aggressive effort to break Facebook&#8217;s hammerlock on social networking &#8212; has a perfect perspective to talk about the fast-growing area and where it is going globally. With locally-based social companies springing up all over Asia, can Google establish one the whole world will use? It&#8217;s an important question and Horowitz&#8217;s job No. 1.</p>

<p>At Microsoft, <strong>Andy Lees</strong> is leading one of the software giant&#8217;s most important initiatives, as president of its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110421/exclusive-microsofts-lees-and-nokias-oistamo-talk-about-the-final-contract-they-just-signed/">Windows Phone division</a>. His come-from-behind job includes mobile software and hardware, as well as its key partnership with Nokia. With Apple&#8217;s iPhone and Google&#8217;s Android far in the lead, Lees will need to win in markets globally, especially in Asia.</p>

<p><strong>Peter Chernin</strong> is one of Hollywood&#8217;s top players and execs. The <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090224/peter-chernin-unplugged-just-for-now-methinks-the-entire-d5-interview/">former top News Corp. exec</a> is now a movie producer &#8212; his first effort, &#8220;Rise of the Planet of the Apes,&#8221; is a big hit. But he&#8217;s also been increasingly active in media investing in Asia of late, and has a lot to say about the global nature of entertainment in the digital age.</p>

<p><strong>John Roese</strong> heads the North American R&#038;D team for Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant making everything from heavy-duty gear for networks to mobile phones and tablets. The <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20081110/nortel/">former CTO of Nortel</a>, he&#8217;s heading up global development of Huawei&#8217;s cloud services for both businesses and consumers. Roese will also talk about the phenomenon of a Chinese-owned company emerging on the world technology stage.</p>
<p>Even in the midst of an economic downturn, there is no denying that it has been a golden time for Silicon Valley start-ups, which have enjoyed unprecedented growth and funding in the Web 2.0 era. But as they seek to expand beyond the U.S., a critical move for them all, we&#8217;ve assembled a panel of entrepreneurs to discuss it, including:</p>

How Airbnb can take the company to the next level, including across the world, while dealing with the kinds of challenges the small management team has to face, will be an interesting topic for discussion.</p>

<p>Today, Demand Media <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110809/demand-media-beats-expectations-for-q2/">beat Wall Street expectations</a> in its second-quarter earning, growing revenue and lessening losses.</p>
<p>The Santa Monica, Calif., online content maker also announced that it had re-upped and expanded its advertising partnership with Google and also bought two start-ups in social media and advertising.</p>
<p>Now, it&#8217;s time for the inevitable conference call to explain it all to Wall Street analysts and the media. </p>
<p><strong>2:02 pm PT:</strong> The call starts off with an unusually jaunty CEO Richard Rosenblatt, who quickly got to the real deal: Exactly how badly did Google&#8217;s changes to its search algorithm, under a program code-named Panda, hurt Demand&#8217;s content business?</p>
<p>Not much, says Rosenblatt, who reels off a list of things the company has done to improve its offerings, which have been dinged by many as, well, spam. </p>

<p>Rosenblatt was not having any of that, talking about removing 300,000 pieces of crappy content and also &#8220;quality improvements&#8221; with partners such as cheerily demented cooking goddess Rachael Ray. She might cook with spam &#8212; <a href="http://www.rachaelraymag.com/Recipes/rachael-ray-magazine-recipe-search/dinner-recipes/spam-hawaiian">here is a delightful Spam Hawaiian recipe</a> &#8212; but she <em>ain&#8217;t</em> spam!</p>
<p><strong>2:13 pm:</strong> Now it is on to the acquisition of IndieClick. Essentially: It&#8217;s for the young people.</p>
<p>Then, international. Latin America Demand editorial via eHow en español! (Actually, the acquisition of Emergincast.com, an Argentine start-up. Coming soon to a blog site near you: ¿Cómo se hierve el agua?</p>
<p>Last, social media. Demand will be doing a lot more of it, like everyone else in the world, including more recommendations. I would really like it if some Internet company said it was going anti-social.</p>

<p><strong>2:18 pm:</strong> The finance guy comes on, covering everything already in the press releases. Which is why I am cutting out here and getting a gluten-free doughnut at the Whole Foods store where I am writing this post.</p>
<p>It is as delicious as you might imagine a gluten-free doughnut can be. Which is to say: Not very!</p>
<p><strong>2:32 pm:</strong> Q&#038;A time from the Wall Street dudes &#8212; and, let it be said, they are all dudes. </p>
<p>The first question is about the &#8220;cleansing&#8221; of its cruddy content and if it is all flushed out. </p>
<p>It might be baked-on sludge, but Rosenblatt assures that Demand has it all figured out.</p>
<p>Then, a query about international and how the company decides what to pick. Algo, of course! And local content writers.</p>
<p>Back to the spam content: Does the need to have better content mean less of it? Kind of, since there is a lot more video. But still a lot of content churning out of Demand!</p>

<p>A question about Facebook and how to program Demand content into it. Good lord, it&#8217;s hyper-poking!</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not clear the best way of how you expand into all these properties,&#8221; said Rosenblatt, specifically referring to its acquisition today of both IndieClick and RSS Graffiti.</p>
<p>The next question is how successful Demand is in the display and brand business, and how IndieClick, a premium ad company aimed at niche blogs, will be integrated in. </p>
<p>More on social media advertising&#8217;s future. <em>Aaaghh</em>, this is as obvious as a store-bought-crust apple pie baked by Rachael Ray. </p>

<p>Rosenblatt notes that its flagship site, eHow, is but one means of distribution, but Demand content is going all over the place and winging by people when they least expect it.</p>
<p>&#8220;Social is more effective &#8230; to try to find stuff you didn&#8217;t know that you needed,&#8221; says Rosenblatt, who also would not dis search as a means of discovery.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s important, since Google is a major traffic driver and advertising partner, when it is not terrorizing Demand and others with its search algo version of Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor Snape.</p>
<p>And presto, here comes a question about Demand&#8217;s Google ad relationship, which Rosenblatt touts nicely.</p>
<p>Of course he does. It&#8217;s tastier than spam, after all.</p>

<p>After Google&#8217;s legal head David Drummond let forth with a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110803/google-rails-against-anti-android-patent-cabal/">blog post about how Microsoft and Apple had formed an evil patent cabal</a> against the search giant, the software giant&#8217;s PR head Frank Shaw was not having any of it.</p>
<p>In his post, Drummond had claimed the pair ganged up on Google and had not offered to partner over key former Novell patents, in an attempt to stop the growth of its Android mobile operating system.</p>
<p>Except not, according to an email that Shaw posted on Twitter from Google&#8217;s legal counsel Kent Walker to Microsoft&#8217;s legal head Brad Smith.</p>
<p><a href="http://twitter.com/#!/fxshaw/status/98932077327691776/photo/1">Tweeted Shaw</a>: &#8220;Free advice for David Drummond – next time check with Kent Walker before you blog. :)&#8221;</p>
<p>It was followed by the image of the email, in which Walker seemed to turn down an offer of a partnership over the patents. &#8220;After talking with people here, it sounds as though for various reasons a joint bid wouldn&#8217;t be advisable for us on this one.&#8221;</p>
<p>Smith also piled on on Twitter, noting: &#8220;Google says we bought Novell patents to keep them from Google. Really? We asked them to bid jointly with us. They said no.&#8221;</p>

<p>Microsoft had a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110721/microsoft-beats-earnings-expectations/">solid fourth quarter</a>, which is why the conference call with Wall Street analysts should be relatively short and sweet.</p>
<p>Or sweet, at least.</p>
<p>Microsoft reported beat expectations on profits that rose 30 percent, as well as on revenue. Of particular note were its Office, Entertainment and Devices and Servers and Tools units. Even the revenue at its perpetually money-sucking Online Services division was up 17 percent.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a liveblog of the call:</p>
<p><strong>2:31 pm PT:</strong> Well, Microsoft investor relations dude-in-chief Bill Koefoed sounds unusually jaunty in his greeting.</p>
<p>And why not? The results are good for Microsoft, even a little giddy, with a lot of impressive numbers and solid launches of several products, from Xbox Kinect to Office 365 to Bing, the very pricey but pretty search service.</p>
<p>Next up is CFO Peter Klein, who also sounds like this particular call is a relief. </p>
<p>He talks about the results a bit, most of which are up. </p>
<p>&#8220;In summary, we are pleased,&#8221; says Klein about the quarter and the year. He also notes that he is &#8220;excited.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s party time in Redmond!</p>
<p><strong>2:38 pm:</strong> Peppy Bill is back, going through the numbers. Solid!</p>
<p>Klein then moves onto the future and he remains &#8220;excited.&#8221; </p>
<p>Now, it is onto Q&#038;A from the analysts. </p>

<p>Lots of congrats, which only makes me hungrier. One analyst asks why it was so much stronger than expected.</p>
<p>Klein: The economy has improved, businesses are expanding, peeps love them some cloud.</p>
<p>There is a question about how the troubled Yahoo search partnership is going. Klein promises some improvement by the end of the year.</p>
<p>Still, <em>bummer</em>!</p>
<p>But it is quickly back to happy, with a question about the strength of Xbox and its subscribers.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s fantastic,&#8221; says Klein.</p>
<p>Like I said, <em>sweeeeeeet</em>.</p>

<p>Yahoo turned in another <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/yahoo-revenues-down-again-in-2q-and-microsoft-search-deal-gets-blame/">weak performance in the second quarter</a>, with yet another decline in revenue. </p>
<p>This time it was five percent, compared to last quarter&#8217;s six percent. In other words, at least things are looking up as they go down!</p>
<p>While earnings per share rose smartly, Wall Street is still looking for strong sales growth from the Silicon Valley Internet giant, which seems unable to provide it.</p>
<p>Blamed most this time for the revenue fall: Yahoo&#8217;s changes in its display sales operations in the key Americas region, reasons for which were largely unspecified in the initial company press release. (You can see the damage in this <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/not-so-chart-tastic-picture-of-yahoos-2q-display-disaster/">slide deck from the company here</a>.)</p>
<p>Maybe Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz will explain it all in its upcoming conference call with analysts (or she could try the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/liveblogging-murdoch-son-at-phonegate-hearing-a-lion-in-winter/">I-don&#8217;t-know approach taken by News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch</a> in PhoneGate hearings in Britain earlier today!).</p>
<p><strong>2 pm PT:</strong> It starts with the usual regulatory blah-blah, which I always enjoy.</p>
<p>Bartz gets right into it, opening with the key <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110714/the-good-the-bad-and-the-time-consuming-yahoo-pushes-to-settle-alibaba-dispute-before-earnings-but-dont-hold-your-breath/">problems with China&#8217;s Alibaba Group</a>, as well as its display and search revenue weaknesses.</p>
<p>The fight with Alibaba is over its Alipay payments unit, which was spun out of the Chinese company without Yahoo&#8217;s say-so. Yahoo is a big shareholder.</p>
<p>Bartz says that the company was working on a settlement night and day.</p>
<p>But she quickly gets onto how display did not perform as expected in its key Americas arena. &#8220;Obviously, I am not happy,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/liveblogging-yahoo-q2-earnings-call-whos-to-blame-for-the-revenue-rout/unknown-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-100200"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/07/Unknown1.png" alt="" title="Unknown" width="215" height="234" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-100200" /></a></p>
<p><em>Obvi!</em> Neither are shareholders, Carol.</p>
<p>She says it was not about new competitive development. It was not about the economy. It was not about engagement. </p>
<p>So what <em>was</em> it? Changes in its sales leadership and organization, says Bartz, which has included talent walking out the door in droves.</p>
<p>A lot more than Yahoo expected, but no surprise to anyone who has been paying any attention to the brain drain at the company.</p>
<p>Bartz promises a new approach to sales, part of its endless turnaround, which is beginning to feel like a digital version of &#8220;Waiting for Godot.&#8221;</p>
<p>Search revenue, though, says Bartz, was better than expected.</p>
<p><strong>2:11 pm:</strong> CFO Tim Morse is on now, running through the numbers and the display shortfall in the Americas region. </p>
<p>&#8220;We simply did not have appropriate coverage,&#8221; says Morse, noting consumer products, tech and autos as weak spots in the advertising market.</p>
<p>Thank goodness, then, for the guarantees from search revenue in the Microsoft partnership deal. </p>
<p>More numbers and then it is back to Bartz to talk about search, which is going better than the last quarter, when it was the culprit for the revenue decline.</p>
<p>She says that Microsoft and Yahoo were working together to improve the issues.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;d like to be further down the road,&#8221; says Bartz about the goal of search revenue per search growth, as well as settling all the other problems, such as the Asian issues. </p>

<p>And, by further, I am presuming she means actual forward movement, which is what roads are actually for.</p>
<p><strong>2:27 pm:</strong> Q&#038;A time, the part of our program where Wall Street analysts do not ask the questions that need asking (and where I win fancy journalism awards for pointing this delta out!).</p>
<p>Therefore, Bartz is first thanked for providing &#8220;color&#8221; about the display disaster and is not asked about more specifics of the disaster itself.</p>
<p>The second question still does not get to it either, but she does note Yahoo&#8217;s sales force has to sell beyond &#8220;Gee, we&#8217;re big&#8221; and come up with better ad solutions.</p>
<p>&#8220;The issue is we did not have enough sales people in front of the big clients,&#8221; says Bartz. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s because all those former Yahoos are now working at Groupon, LivingSocial, Facebook and on down the line and now in front of big clients for those hotter companies.</p>
<p><strong>2:34 pm:</strong> Question about its Asian assets. Yahoo&#8217;s talks with Yahoo! Japan and Alibaba are separate, says Bartz, although I would add that they have non-movement in common. </p>
<p>And also a question about <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110718/with-yet-another-flat-quarter-expected-does-yahoo-need-a-hail-mary-hulu-acquisition/">Yahoo&#8217;s interest in the acquisition</a> of the Hulu premium online video service.</p>
<p>Bartz winks verbally and says nothing, which translates into: Of course, it is interested.</p>
<p>More on the reasons for the display fall-off, which Bartz makes clear is not due to big competitive threats, but internal issues. </p>
<p>Maybe she&#8217;s saving big competitive threats as the reason for a revenue decline in the third quarter!</p>

<p>I look forward to the quarter I get the finger pointed at me for causing revenue to fall, due to my snarky posts. </p>
<p>Now, we are into softball questions about improvements in engagement. It&#8217;s up, but no one asks why Yahoo is still not doing anything very cutting edge in product innovation compared to competitors.</p>
<p>I believe Google has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110715/by-the-numbers-google-the-biggest-social-network-launch-ever/">launched at least 14 new social networks</a> since this Sunday, along with its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110714/google-beats-q2-expectations/">strong quarterly performance</a> last week. And Apple, well, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/monster-earnings-from-apple/">blew away its quarter today</a> as it is about to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110714/new-macbook-airs-coming-next-week-not-this-week/">release more cool new stuff</a> later this week.</p>
<p>And that might be the crux of the issue for Yahoo, which might not solve its woes by throwing a more focused sales army at the issue.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because Yahoo&#8217;s products are simply not nearly has social as Facebook or even Google right now, which might be the true problem as old customers move on to new advertising solutions.</p>
<p>Whatever the reason, Yahoo clearly needs a refresh of its ad products and how it sells them, especially in its fast-growing mobile, video and communications products.</p>
<p>Bartz talks about getting better expertise, a tighter regional focus and other issues of going to market, which is perhaps something she might have realized many, many quarters ago. </p>
<p>After all, she&#8217;s been in charge for a while, and these issues are not new. </p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/liveblogging-yahoo-q2-earnings-call-whos-to-blame-for-the-revenue-rout/images-1-3/" rel="attachment wp-att-100213"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/07/images-12.png" alt="" title="images-1" width="284" height="177" class="alignright size-full wp-image-100213" /></a></p>
<p>In fact, in an earlier quarter, Bartz was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110420/yahoos-focuses-on-tentpole-events-with-new-head/">stressing &#8220;tentpole&#8221; events</a> and anchor media properties and the power of the size of Yahoo as a selling point. </p>
<p>This <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110419/yahoos-first-quarter-earnings-the-revenue-drought-continues-due-to-search-fall-off/">was in April</a>, in fact, in the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110419/liveblogging-yahoos-1q-earnings-call-get-me-to-funky-town/">first quarter of this year</a>.</p>
<p>As I wrote then: </p>
<p>&#8220;CEO Carol Bartz excited was the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s traffic gusher for big tentpole events such as the Super Bowl and the Oscars. In fact, Bartz practically sounded like a gushy &#8220;Entertainment Tonight&#8221; flunky when talking to Wall Street analysts about Yahoo&#8217;s Oscar news, games and other offerings. She proudly noted the site&#8217;s efforts generated more than a billion pages views.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now big is out! <em>Moving on!</em></p>
<p>The last question is another about Yahoo&#8217;s talks with its Asian partners.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s complex,&#8221; says Bartz.</p>
<p>You can say that again.</p>

<p>Tomorrow, Yahoo will announce its second-quarter earnings and, once again, Wall Street is expecting yet another <em>meh</em> performance from the Internet giant.</p>
<p>In his &#8220;cheat sheet&#8221; report, Citi analyst Mark Mahaney&#8217;s take is pretty typical of the sentiment of investors weary of waiting for a rebound in Yahoo&#8217;s growth.</p>
<p>&#8220;From $15, we believe YHOO shares have upwards bias,&#8221; wrote Mahaney, &#8220;but we don&#8217;t have real conviction.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s become the unfortunate norm for Yahoo, whose management has continued to struggle with a variety of issues, from its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110711/yahoo-loses-global-search-business-head-chi-chao-chang/">ongoing talent drain</a> to an unexpected and still <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110714/the-good-the-bad-and-the-time-consuming-yahoo-pushes-to-settle-alibaba-dispute-before-earnings-but-dont-hold-your-breath/">unresolved fight with its main partner in China</a> to the troubles in its search partnership with Microsoft to the overall lack of ability to turbocharge its advertising and other businesses as has been long promised.</p>
<p>While it is certainly not for lack of trying, the prospect of Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz wheeling out another series of excuses for the lack of turnaround and &#8212; something many have been looking for most of all &#8212; a clearer strategic vision for the company on the earnings call on Tuesday, will surely not produce a dulcet impact on its depressed shares. </p>
<p>The stock has continued to dip well below $15 a share, down almost six percent last week and 13 percent for the last six months.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why some think that Yahoo&#8217;s interest in bidding for the Hulu premium video service, which is being sold by its media giant owners, might be just the bold and risky move to get the company centered around.</p>
<p>With the online video ad business growing and the need for Yahoo to focus its many ambitions, some think Hulu could be a key piece in becoming the &#8220;premier digital media company&#8221; that the Internet giant has recently taken to calling itself.</p>
<p>By doubling down on what Hulu represents &#8212; that would be the premium online video business &#8212; it&#8217;s a fast-growing category Yahoo&#8217;s large sales force would be well-suited for.</p>
<p>In addition, a purchase of Hulu could give Yahoo some much-needed talent in the arena, including its CEO Jason Kilar and others. </p>
<p>&#8220;Of all the buyers, Yahoo is the most in need of a purchase to change its paradigm,&#8221; said one observer. &#8220;If it could not pay too much, Hulu would give Yahoo some differentiating that it really needs.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course, paying too much for Hulu is a key consideration mentioned by all who are looking at it, including Google, AT&#038;T, Amazon and others.</p>
<p>How to determine the value of Hulu&#8217;s content licenses, both now and later &#8212; given that once those rights expire whoever owns Hulu will eventually have to compete in acquiring the often high-priced material from Hollywood &#8212; is the biggest question they are asking.</p>
<p>Is that worth $1 billion or $2 billion? Can a new owner keep up the momentum needed to successfully maintain the Hulu business well after those content rights expire? And, of course, which company would be best suited to accomplish this task?</p>
<p>Yahoo certainly has all the potential to be at the front of that line, despite being managed erratically for far too long. But &#8212; also as usual &#8212; there is the endless debate internally over whether buying it will fix problems. </p>
<p>Whatever happens, most agree that something dramatic needs to happen at Yahoo, rather than the continual story of flatness that has been coming out of the company for far too long.</p>
<p>And we&#8217;ll all see if that&#8217;s improved after the close of the market tomorrow, when Wall Street is expecting Yahoo to report revenue of $1.11 billion on earnings of 18 cents.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a revenue decline of two percent, which is not great, especially considering <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110714/google-beats-q2-expectations/">Google&#8217;s strong performance last week</a>. Then again, it&#8217;s better than the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110419/liveblogging-yahoos-1q-earnings-call-get-me-to-funky-town/">first quarter&#8217;s six percent drop</a> in revenue for Yahoo. </p>
<p>Like I said: <em>Meh</em>.</p>

<p>Microsoft&#8217;s SVP of Strategy and Partnership Hank Vigil will be leaving the software giant to focus on investing in and advising for early-stage start-up companies, according to an internal email from CEO Steve Ballmer.</p>
<p>But the 25-year company veteran, who will departs Microsoft in the fall, will also become a &#8220;strategic advisor&#8221; to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/microsoft/">Microsoft</a>.<br />
That&#8217;s probably a good idea, since Vigil is one of the company&#8217;s most visible and well-liked execs in the tech community, especially in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>He also is Microsoft&#8217;s best-dressed exec, if I might be so bold to say.</p>
<p>Vigil has had wide-ranging jobs all over Microsoft in his many years there.</p>
<p>He has most recently been working directly with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/steve-ballmer/">Ballmer</a>, according to his <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/vigil/">company bio</a>, &#8220;developing and managing strategic relationships, mergers, acquisitions and investment partnerships with media, consumer electronics, telecommunications, software and Internet companies.&#8221;</p>
<p>In that role, Vigil has worked on a range of deals, including with Facebook, Nokia, News Corp. and many others.</p>
<p>Previously, he worked on Microsoft&#8217;s digital TV strategy, including the acquisition of WebTV. Vigil also did marketing and business strategy for Office, Word and Excel.</p>
<p>In other words, Vigil knows where all the bodies are buried up at Microsoft&#8217;s Redmond HQ! And, presumably, he&#8217;ll be keeping that to himself.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the internal email from Ballmer about Vigil&#8217;s departure:</p>

<p>Hank has covered a lot of ground, from launching Excel 3 and Office 95, to our early investments in ITV, to helping restructure our relationships with Sun, Time Warner, and Real Networks, to his more recent work helping to drive new investments and partnerships with companies like Yahoo!, Facebook, and Nokia. He&#8217;s been a critical strategic advisor and bridge-builder on some of the biggest industry opportunities we&#8217;ve dealt with in recent years. </p>
<p>He&#8217;ll be staying on until the fall, then he intends to do some early stage investing and advising start-up companies.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Zynga has nabbed another top exec from Yahoo&#8211;this time, Mike Gupta, one of its key strategy and corporate finance execs, sources say.</p>
<p>He will have a similar role at Zynga, in charge of areas such as investor relations. As I reported earlier this week, the online gaming company is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110524/exclusive-zynga-about-to-file-for-ipo/">poised to file for an IPO</a>, which is expected to value the company at upwards of $20 billion.</p>
<p>Gupta, who has held a number of jobs at Yahoo over many years, played an important part in Yahoo&#8217;s search and online partnership deal with Microsoft.</p>
<p>Previously, Zynga hired Yahoo&#8217;s M&#038;A head, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110407/exclusive-yahoo-loses-ma-head-to-zynga">Taylor Barada</a>.</p>

<p>You&#8217;d think there would be a party in Redmond, Wash., today, as software giant Microsoft soundly beat Wall Street expectations in its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110428/microsoft-3q-earnings-beats-the-street-but-will-stock-rise-finally-follow/">third-quarter earnings released</a> earlier today.</p>
<p>Microsoft said it had revenue of $16.43 billion for the quarter ended March 31, 2011, which was up 13 percent from a year ago. Net income was $5.23 billion, or 61 cents per share, a rise of 31 percent and 36 percent, respectively.</p>
<p>The surge was led by sales of Office, Kinect and Xbox and a stronger economy.</p>
<p>But there are shadows, too, as results were dragged down by weaker revenues for its flagship Windows unit.</p>
<p>The report comes as Microsoft&#8217;s stock continues to lag, declining 14 percent for the year.</p>
<p><em>Buzz kill!</em></p>
<p>BoomTown livedblogged the call for Wall Street analysts:</p>
<p><strong>2:30 pm PT:</strong> Peter Klein, Microsoft&#8217;s CFO, who sounds super peppy, outlined the strong quarter, especially for its Office products.</p>
<p>He also mentioned some glitches, such as Microsoft&#8217;s still-struggling efforts to increase revenue per search (RPS) in its longtime search and online advertising partnership with Yahoo and the slower growth of the PC sector upon which the software giant&#8217;s Windows relies.</p>
<p>PC should stand for &#8220;possibly crappy,&#8221; but good-boy Klein did not say so.</p>
<p>Investor relations dude Bill Koefoed also read through the news, sounding at times like a sports announcer on a cable television network.</p>
<p>&#8220;Quuuuaaadrupled&#8230;,&#8221; he intoned about one part of Microsoft&#8217;s business.</p>
<p>This all went on for a while, since Microsoft has a lot of divisions. Servers &#038; Tools. Online Services. Entertainment and Devices. Fashion &#038; Cute Tops.</p>
<p>Okay, not that one, but a girl can dream.</p>
<p>It was all fun and games until Koefoed got to the Yahoo problem, which Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz had used as a cudgel in <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100420/liveblogging-yahoos-first-quarter-earnings">her earnings report</a> recently.</p>
<p>Yes, it is a bummer. But soon it was back to the happy land of Xbox!</p>
<p>Klein said he was pleased with the results in a jaunty manner, which made me desperately wish Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer led the call.</p>
<p>Because he&#8217;s always one obnoxious query away from a volcanic popping off.</p>
<p>Which is why I love those Yahoo calls and Bartz.</p>
<p><em>Buzz kill!</em></p>
<p><strong>2:54 pm PT:</strong> That was fast&#8211;the call was quickly into questions.</p>
<p>The first is about COGS&#8211;cost of goods sold&#8211;and how it impacts gross margins.</p>
<p>Klein said the expenses were volume driven. I&#8217;d explain, but then I would fall asleep.</p>
<p>The next question was about stock buybacks.</p>
<p>That might get the stock up. Yeah, said Klein, they&#8217;ll keep doing that&#8211;not that it has helped much on the share price front.</p>
<p>More and more questions, about the PC market, the issues at Yahoo (let&#8217;s get that RPS up!), the Windows Phone 7 business.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll be honest, I was a bit bored and started reading a riveting <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/exclusive-qa-arrington-says-the-real-conflict-of-interest-in-tech-reporting-has-nothing-to-do-with-money-2011-4?op=1">Business Insider interview</a> with TechCrunch&#8217;s Michael Arrington on his myriad <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110428/godspeed-on-that-investing-thing-yertle-but-i-still-have-some-questions-for-your-boss-arianna/">conflicts of interest related to his tech investing</a> while also blogging as a news guy.</p>
<p>Whatever you think about him, that dude is good copy.</p>
<p>Wait, back to growth rates for Office!</p>
<p>It&#8217;s going great, said Klein (hey, maybe Arrington will invest!).</p>
<p>The call wraps up on news of an upcoming investor conference, being held near Disney World.</p>
<p>Oooh, party time!</p>

<p>One of the results of Yahoo&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110419/yahoos-first-quarter-earnings-the-revenue-drought-continues-due-to-search-fall-off/">weak earnings report</a> earlier this week has been the renewal of chatter about possible changes in its leadership and even ownership.</p>
<p>And continued investor discomfort with its troubled stock price&#8211;Yahoo shares are down 7.25 percent year over year and an astonishing 49 percent on a five-year basis&#8211;and the level of renewed grumbling by major institutional shareholders is causing some key players to go back to their PowerPoints to reevaluate various options.</p>
<p>(By way of contrast, Google is down about 4.5 percent year over year&#8211;largely due to last week&#8217;s earnings release with higher than expected expenses&#8211;but still up more than 20 percent for the five years.)</p>
<p>As many might recall, last year Yahoo was under scrutiny by a number of interested parties&#8211;from big media companies to other digital players to private equity firms&#8211;considering a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/could-aol-buy-yahoo-could-news-corp-takeover-2-0-with-a-little-help-from-the-chinas-alibaba">number of takeover scenarios</a>.</p>
<p>Most of them were just talk and no action resulted, but that did not mean that interest went away.</p>
<p>The truth is, they are still out there and ruminating&#8211;this time with what sources describe as a much more amenable Yahoo board, with several of its key members willing to entertain any legitimate offers or ideas to improve the Silicon Valley search giant&#8217;s prospects.</p>
<p>In the last go-round, by contrast, Yahoo&#8217;s top execs&#8211;including CEO Carol Bartz&#8211;denied any interest in the swirl of rumors related to a variety of ideas.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s definitely changed&#8211;at least at the board level&#8211;so here are three very credible scenarios of what could happen:</p>
<p><strong>Peetie, Peetie, Yahoo-Sweetie</strong></p>
<p>Late last year, BoomTown wrote a post about the interest that former News Corp. COO and President Peter Chernin&#8211;who now owns his own entertainment production company&#8211;had in the situation at Yahoo.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/157844079_c3j8p-M-2.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/157844079_c3j8p-M-2-200x300.jpg" alt="" title="157844079_c3j8p-M-2" width="200" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-43020" /></a></p>
<p>As I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101117/enter-the-chernin-former-news-corp-president-and-coo-in-yahoo-what-if-mix">wrote in November</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>But multiple sources from a variety of sides said that Chernin, a well-liked and deeply experienced media and entertainment exec, has been contacted by a number of private equity firms and other investors about his interest in becoming involved should any of the various and sundry scenarios around the Internet giant pan out.</p>
<p>And Chernin, many sources said, has expressed a definite interest in the situation, perhaps because he was deeply involved in a previous deal when running News Corp.</p>
<p>At the time, it involved combining the media giant&#8217;s Myspace social networking site with Yahoo and also Microsoft&#8217;s portal MSN and creating a new company, code-named &#8220;TrafficCo.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Indeed, that interest remains for Chernin, who has also been an increasingly active investor, including in the digital sector. He is an angel funder of the hot social media app start-up Flipboard, and also just joined the board of the popular Pandora music service.</p>
<p>The most likely possible scenarios have him joining with deep-pocketed partners, including Providence Equity Partners and, yes, Microsoft, as well as investment banks or advisory firms, such as Morgan Stanley and Code Advisors.</p>
<p>The approach being considered&#8211;which would only be done in a friendly way, with the cooperation of Yahoo&#8217;s board&#8211;would center on making a large enough investment in its shares, allowing the group to take control of the management and the board, putting Chernin in as chairman and maybe CEO (or with a new CEO&#8211;see next section).</p>
<p>If Microsoft were involved&#8211;and Chernin has strong ties there&#8211;such a scenario might include folding all its online properties into Yahoo and renegotiating its rocky search partnership, too.</p>
<p>This is an idea that intrigues a lot of people&#8211;including current Yahoo board chairman Roy Bostock, co-founder Jerry Yang and other board members&#8211;who have indicated recently to several investors and dealmakers a willingness to listen to credible player such as Chernin.</p>
<p>But, in this scenario, it would be up to Chernin and his partners to make a prosposal, said sources, and he might decide that the complexity of getting the power to make big changes at Yahoo is too big to tackle.</p>
<p>In addition, Chernin remains a successful Hollywood player, with several major television and movie projects in the works, as well as big investment possibilities in Asia.</p>
<p>&#8220;Does he want the headache of Yahoo at this point in his career?&#8221; asked one person, among many Chernin has talked to recently about becoming involved in the company. &#8220;Would you?&#8221;</p>
<p>Maybe so, if it would provide a big financial windfall. Many think an exec with a reputation like Chernin&#8217;s could easily begin to move Yahoo&#8217;s moribund stock upward quickly.</p>
<p><strong>ABC (Anybody But Carol)</strong></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s one truth: Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz does not get proper credit for a number of moves she has made since coming to the company two years ago, including cleaning up the messy corporate structure, de-complexifying garbled systems, cutting costs and bringing its far-flung operations into line.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/547702043_HQzHZ-M-1.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/547702043_HQzHZ-M-1-199x300.jpg" alt="" title="547702043_HQzHZ-M-1" width="199" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-43021" /></a></p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s stock is certainly doing better than when she arrived in early January of 2009, when it was in the $12 range compared to its current $16 price point.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s another: That stock price now includes more than $10 in solid assets&#8211;cash and Yahoo&#8217;s much more valuable stakes in China&#8217;s Alibaba Group and Yahoo! Japan&#8211;leaving very little true share appreciation.</p>
<p>And here are more truths: Bartz&#8217;s inability to get revenues growing, innovations flowing, promising start-ups acquired and&#8211;most importantly&#8211;to stop the continual exodus of talent out the door of Yahoo has made her tenure shakier than ever.</p>
<p>Add to that making its relationships with Asian partners more tense, almost no traction in key mobile, video and social arenas, a record of loud public declarations that have fallen flat and serious troubles in Yahoo&#8217;s search and online partnership with Microsoft&#8211;a deal Bartz struck and is charged with managing&#8211;recently highlighted in Yahoo&#8217;s earnings earlier this week.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://blogs.forbes.com/ericjackson/2011/04/20/to-unlock-yahoos-value-bartz-should-take-a-hike/">shareholder activist Eric Jackson</a>, who has long agitated for change at Yahoo, wrote this week in a post:</p>
<p>&#8220;The truth is that investors are fed up with Bartz. Their enmity towards Bartz is palpable when you talk to them. Bartz talked a big game coming into the job and she hasn&#8217;t delivered. It&#8217;s that simple.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, not that simple and maybe not fair, but it&#8217;s also clear that no one thinks Bartz will be re-upped when her contract is up in 18 months.</p>
<p>Thus, it&#8217;s no surprise that ideas of other possible leaders of Yahoo are being contemplated now.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the short list I have made of my choices: Akamai President and Yahoo board member <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110204/exclusive-huffpos-eric-hippeau-stepping-down-from-yahoo-board-as-akamais-david-kenny-steps-in">David Kenny</a>; former Microsoft exec and current Juniper Networks CEO Kevin Johnson; former AOL CEO and current News Corp. digital head Jon Miller; and Nikesh Arora, current Chief Business Officer and sales head at Google.</p>
<p>There are plenty more to pick from, of course, and any could be installed in conjunction with an effort such as Chernin&#8217;s.</p>
<p><strong>AOL Under the Hoop</strong></p>
<p>No good Yahoo scenario plotting can be contemplated without including AOL and its flashy CEO Tim Armstrong.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/888733886_4oHvJ-M.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/888733886_4oHvJ-M-200x300.jpg" alt="" title="888733886_4oHvJ-M" width="200" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-43022" /></a></p>
<p>Armstrong has made no secret of wanting to get ahold of Yahoo properties to apply the strategy he has been trying at AOL to get it moving again.</p>
<p>Which is: To become the premiere digital media company.</p>
<p>Which is actually Yahoo&#8217;s new motto&#8211;although arguably, in word and deed, Armstrong has been much more active in pushing the concept and narrative.</p>
<p>That includes his incessant acquisitions of all kinds of online media properties, including the big fish&#8211;the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash/">$315 million purchase of the Huffington Post</a> and the coronation of its even-flashier co-founder Arianna Huffington as content chief.</p>
<p>Armstrong has certainly not been averse to the idea of a Yahoo-AOL hookup with him at the top, and has been actively talking to anyone interested in such a deal.</p>
<p>And things could get a lot more interesting if AOL linked with a bigger strategic partner, such as News Corp. or Disney or even Google, Armstrong&#8217;s former stomping grounds.</p>
<p>Still, wishing does not make it so, especially with a much smaller and weaker set of assets than Yahoo and a still poor record on goosing its advertising sales.</p>
<p>AOL&#8217;s stock is down 30 percent year over year, as investors still worry about Armstrong&#8217;s ability to turn the company around, which kind of puts him in the same situation as Bartz.</p>
<p>&#8220;AOL is waiting under the hoop for whatever happens, which is a good place to be,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;Why not?&#8221;</p>
<p>Why not, indeed&#8211;so, let the games begin.</p>
