<p>At the recent <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt talked a lot about the savings that could be realized via a massive expansion of the so-called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130529/ge-ceo-jeff-immelts-big-data-bet/">&#8220;Industrial Internet,&#8221;</a> reducing waste and maximizing the use of critical machines &#8212; such as power turbines &#8212; via sensors and other collected data.</p>
<p>GE is calling its Hadoop-based software platform for high-volume, machine data managementit &#8220;Predictivity,&#8221; the industrial giant announced at an event in San Francisco. The big data and analytics platform will include expanded partnerships with Accenture and Pivotal, as well as a new partnership with Amazon Web Services for cloud storage.</p>
<p>&#8220;This marks the first time industrial companies will have a common architecture, combining intelligent machines, sensors and advanced analytics,&#8221; said GE in a <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/ge-moves-machines-to-the-cloud-2013-06-18">press release</a>. </p>
<p>Machine data is a big topic going forward, since such information is growing at a massively rapid pace via sensors and other real-time analytics technologies and is extraordinarily complex compared to the consumer Internet. In simple terms, everything from your jet engine to your washing machine is talking to the Web in an endless dialogue full of important information.</p>
<p>This will be a big business. A new report released today by Wikibon said that spending on the Industrial Internet will reach $514 billion by 2020, as huge amounts of raw data needs computing in real-time (see chart below).</p>
<p><a href="http://i1.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2013/06/Untitled-copy-2.jpg"><img src="http://i2.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2013/06/Untitled-copy-2-640x436.jpg?resize=640%2C436" alt="Untitled copy 2" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-333912" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s a little complex, but GE&#8217;s push into software that harnesses big data and analytics to make more efficient machines is a big deal. GE, for example, recently made a $105 million investment in Pivotal, an enterprise &#8220;platform-as-a-service&#8221; company which is run by former VMware CEO and top Microsoft exec Paul Maritz. It is a spinoff of VMware and EMC.</p>
<p>At a panel discussion at the announcement, AWS CTO Werner Vogels talked about the huge amounts of storage needed. &#8220;Big data here is one of those cases where collecting more data results in a better outcome,&#8221; he said, giving examples ranging from oil rigs to oceanographers. &#8220;It&#8217;s not just the analytics, it&#8217;s the whole pipeline.&#8221;</p>
<p>Maritz noted how important real-time information is critical for businesses, as well as taking cues from what has been done in the consumer space. &#8220;What I think is really exciting is taking the lessons learned in consumer Internet and going on a journey of information here,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Later, Maritz added about the challenges of creating a common platform: &#8220;This needs to be bigger than any one of us.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The Industrial Internet <em>should</em> be like the Internet,&#8221; said Bill Ruh, who runs GE&#8217;s Global software business. &#8220;This is an ecosystem play.&#8221;</p>

<p>In its Internet push of late, GE has also been expanding its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130520/ge-ventures-officially-opens-for-business-in-silicon-valley-video/">Silicon Valley presence</a>, with a new office and a formal name for its longtime investment efforts. GE Ventures &#8212; which has a financial commitment of $150 million annually from GE &#8212; is part of the company&#8217;s larger tech presence in the Silicon Valley area, which also includes its new software and analytics center in nearby San Ramon, which has hired hundreds of engineers since late 2011.</p>

<p>Much like Nextdoor&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120807/nextdoor-the-private-social-network-hooks-up-with-the-city-of-san-jose/">existing deals with San Jose</a>, Dallas and San Diego, the New York City government will be able to use Nextdoor to post pertinent civic information to specific neighborhoods across all five boroughs. So, activity such as utility information (say, a burst water main in a neighborhood), police department alerts or fire department stats can all be more finely targeted to the pertinent areas affected.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an easy and natural move for a mayor like Michael R. Bloomberg, whose administration has already made advances with other social mediums like Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter to post civic news in outreach efforts.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have great admiration for Mayor Bloomberg as an entrepreneur,&#8221; Nextdoor CEO Nirav Tolia told <strong>AllThingsD</strong>. &#8220;He understands the tech revolution, has a data-driven approach to solutions, and is very understanding about how Silicon Valley works.&#8221;</p>
<p>The new partnership also dovetails with Bloomberg&#8217;s introduction of a sweeping plan to safeguard New York City from future dangers of climate change and disasters like Hurricane Sandy, as he laid out a $19.5-billion plan to protect the city&#8217;s coasts, overhaul zoning regulations and change standards for telecommunications and other fuel-related provisioning.</p>
<p>“As bad as Sandy was, future storms could be even worse,” Bloomberg told reporters at a press conference earlier this week. “In fact, because of rising temperatures and sea levels, even a storm that’s not as large as Sandy could, down the road, be even more destructive.”</p>
<p>So, something like Nextdoor, which purports to bring communities even closer together within the atomic units of neighborhoods, is a top-down way of distributing information to the masses.</p>
<p>More so now, considering the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130523/with-new-mobile-app-nextdoor-unveils-its-take-on-the-neighborhood-watch/">recent launch of Nextdoor&#8217;s mobile application</a>, which allows members to send updates to their neighborhoods from anywhere they wish (instead of just from the mobile Web or desktop browser, as it was before). That seems to be going well, too; according to the most recent stats from Nextdoor, 22 percent of content across all of Nextdoor has increased since the iPhone app&#8217;s launch.</p>
<p>Nextdoor, which is based in San Francisco, plans to hire an NYC-based team to manage the partnership with the city. </p>

		<description><![CDATA[Can the City by the Bay finally get the newspaper it deserves?]]></description>

<p>Media giant Hearst has hired two senior execs &#8212; Demand Media&#8217;s Joanne Bradford and former Los Angeles Times CEO Jeffrey Johnson &#8212; in a significant move to digitally turbocharge and jumpstart its flagship but long-suffering newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle and its SFGate.com website.</p>
<p>&#8220;They have deep publishing and new media experience and believe in the power of great content with a valued brand,&#8221; said Heart CEO Frank Bennack in a statement. &#8220;We are excited to work with them to redefine the choices for how and where readers can experience the trusted Chronicle content they depend on.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the new leadership, Johnson will be the publisher of the Chronicle, while Bradford will be its president. Both will report to Hearst Newspapers President Mark Aldam. Current publisher Frank Vega &#8212; an old-style publisher who has had a controversial tenure at the Chronicle &#8212; will retire, though Hearst said he will continue as chairman through the transition. </p>
<p>&#8220;The San Francisco Chronicle should be a shining star and use case of how to build a community and cover local news,&#8221; said Bradford in a text to me today.</p>
<p>Indeed. While the Chronicle and its website is the largest for local news in the Bay area, it has lagged a lot in aggressively covering key trends &#8212; such as tech &#8212; and the fast growth of the region. While the area has blossomed, the Chronicle, like many big-city newspapers, has suffered, as digital businesses of all kinds have made incursions on its business. </p>
<p>Its daily print circulation is now 265,000, and combined with its website it reaches close to two million people. </p>
<p>Getting all that a whole lot higher &#8212; and, perhaps more importantly, a lot more <em>relevant</em> &#8212; will be a tough job and will likely require a major reinvention of the Chronicle brand. </p>
<p>That is especially true since the San Francisco area, including Silicon Valley, is the world&#8217;s key digital hub, as well as a leader in a number of areas &#8212; from top-notch sports teams to having one of the most innovative food and indie cultures. After a few years of rough economic times, the city is on a bit of a roll, including being the location of some upcoming major events such as the Super Bowl and America&#8217;s Cup.</p>
<p>Bradford has a lot of experience in both old and new media and is well known in the online media advertising space, having had top sales and media jobs at BusinessWeek magazine, Microsoft, Yahoo and, now, Demand.</p>
<p>She has been at that content site, where she has been its chief revenue and marketing officer, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">since 2010</a>. At Yahoo, previous to Demand, she was an SVP in charge of North American revenue and also worked on branded entertainment partnerships. At Microsoft, she was a corporate VP and chief media officer of MSN Media Network.</p>
<p>And, although I have known her well over many years &#8212; full disclosure: We are very good friends &#8212; I had no idea she had an undergraduate degree in journalism from San Diego State University.</p>
<p>Johnson is also a longtime media exec. He has recently been an operating partner at the Yucaipa Companies &#8212; owned by kingpin Ron Burkle &#8212; focusing on media investments since 2007. Previous to that, he was president, publisher and CEO of the Los Angeles Times for just a year, but had been its SVP and GM since 2000. At the Times, he was responsible for the newspaper&#8217;s digital and print operations including editorial, advertising, circulation, consumer sales and marketing, finance and technology. Johnson has also worked at the Chicago Tribune and Orlando Sentinel and has an undergraduate degree in accounting from the University of Illinois and an MBA from the University of Chicago. </p>
<p>The Chronicle is the largest newspaper in Northern California, founded in 1865 by Charles and Michael de Young. Its owner, the privately-held Hearst, is one of the nation&#8217;s largest media companies, with dozens of daily and weekly newspapers; has a huge group of television stations and cable network stakes, such as Lifetime, A&#038;E and ESPN; hundreds of magazines, such as Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan and Elle; and many other varied holdings. </p>
<p>Bradford will be replaced at Demand Media by <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101016/exclusive-former-yahoo-and-microsoft-exec-dossett-to-demand-media/ ">Jeff Dossett</a>. </p>

<p>SoftBank Capital and Yahoo Japan said they had created an unusual $20 million fund to help U.S. startups break into the Japanese market, while also upping a presence in the U.S. </p>
<p>The partnership between Japan&#8217;s largest Internet company &#8212; which is also a joint venture with Yahoo &#8212; and the venture arm of the giant SoftBank Corp. will invest in companies from early-stage funding to later-stage expansion and focus on mobile applications, social media, e-commerce, online advertising, gaming and cloud computing.</p>
<p>The new funds for that are being put into SoftBank Capital&#8217;s $100 million Technology Fund &rsquo;10. As part of the deal, Toshiaki Chiku will become head of U.S. operations in Manhattan. SoftBank Capital also recently announced a $250 million PrinceVille Fund, aimed at growth-stage startups in Asia.</p>
<p>Among the firm&#8217;s recent exits: Bluefin Labs went to Twitter, Buddy Media to Salesforce.com, Huffington Post to AOL, Hyperpublic to Groupon and OMGPOP to Zynga.</p>
<p>Now, it will be focusing even more on helping U.S. startups in Asia.</p>
<p>&#8220;Japan can be challenging for many U.S. companies, and given our scale and affiliation with SoftBank Corp., we&#8217;re in a great position to help them grow and succeed,&#8221; said Chiku in a statement.</p>
<p>SoftBank Capital and Yahoo Japan used performance display advertising company Criteo as an example of a successful investment, in which it also helped the company enter the Asian market (although, technically, Criteo is HQed in France).</p>

<p>According to sources, Facebook has moved well-regarded exec <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100910/exclusive-facebook-snatches-another-google-ad-exec-this-is-getting-ridonkulous/">Emily White</a> to a new job as director of business operations at its Instagram mobile photo-sharing unit.</p>
<p>In this capacity, she will work with Instagram head and co-founder Kevin Systrom to scale nascent efforts to expand partnerships, improve user operations and, presumably, come up with ways to make some money. The fast-growing service, which the social networking site bought a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120409/facetagram-instabook-whatever-you-call-it-all-your-photo-are-belong-to-facebook-for-1-billion/">year ago in a billion-dollar mega-deal</a>, has been popular with consumers, but it has not focused as much on its business operations.</p>
<p>(<strong>Update</strong>: Facebook confirmed the move and also released this statement from Systrom: &#8220;I&#8217;m excited to bring Emily White onto the Instagram team. As we continue to scale our operation to support over 100 million active users, her experience with partnerships and business operations will play a major role in our future success.&#8221;)</p>
<p>In fact, related to business, it has waded more into controversy &#8212; such as when changes to its terms of service suggested that Instagram could sell user photos to advertisers, a change that was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130115/instagrams-updated-user-agreement-goes-into-effect-this-week/">quickly rescinded</a> by Systrom. That said, it <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121220/instagram-walks-back-ad-language-but-leaves-the-door-open/">left the door open to selling advertising</a> of some sort on the app. </p>
<p>White has a lot of experience in the online ad space in smoothing out and organizing ops, both at Google &#8212; where she previously worked &#8212; and at Facebook, where she started in the deal-making arena and later worked on mobile partnerships. </p>
<p>White &#8212; who has recently been courted by other Internet startups, reportedly including scrapbooking phenom Pinterest &#8212; is also on the board of women&#8217;s yoga and running gear retailer Lululemon. That&#8217;s good since part of her new job will be to get more big brands integrated into Instagram, which has already begun to do that with some initial level of success. </p>
<p>Systrom will continue to focus more on product development and overall strategy and vision, which he has done since Instagram was purchased last April. </p>

<p>RealNetworks said it has hired Max Pellegrini to run its mobile entertainment division, which offers a range of services to carriers and device manufacturers.</p>
<p>He replaces Mike Lunsford, who is leaving the Seattle-based company after five years.</p>
<p>In his new job, Pellegrini will also be charged with developing new consumer services for smartphones. Pellegrini comes from premium mobile Web firm Dada.net, where he was chairman and CEO. Dada was acquired by mobile entertainment company Buongiorno in 2011, which was then bought by NTT DoCoMo last year.</p>
<p>RealNetworks is attempting to reinvigorate its business under the leadership of its founder and chairman, Rob Glaser, who is currently interim CEO, by focusing on some core areas, such as mobile entertainment.</p>
<p>It reaches consumers via partnerships with carriers such as T-Mobile and Verizon, offering ring-back tones, ring tones and music on demand.</p>

<p>Longtime Yahoo techie <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=8617416&#038;authType=NAME_SEARCH&#038;authToken=ctON&#038;locale=en_US&#038;srchid=83ab4359-ebe4-480d-bcaf-249245a80bbf-1&#038;srchindex=1&#038;srchtotal=36&#038;goback=%2Efps_PBCK_*1_Laurie_Mann_*2_*2_*1_*2_*2_*1_Y_*1_*1_*1_false_1_R_*1_*51_*1_*51_true_CC%2CN%2CG%2CI%2CPC%2CED%2CL%2CFG%2CTE%2CFA%2CSE%2CP%2CCS%2CF%2CDR_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2_*2&#038;pvs=ps&#038;trk=pp_profile_name_link">Laurence &#8220;Laurie&#8221; Mann</a>, who has recently been SVP of engineering operations at the Silicon Valley Internet giant, has been given the new job of heading its search efforts, according to sources inside the company.</p>
<p>The appointment by CEO Marissa Mayer, also announced in an internal memo last week, puts Mann in a key position at Yahoo, given the need to fix its troubled search partnership with Microsoft, which was struck in 2010. </p>
<p>That is likely to come under great pressure in the days ahead, given that its performance has not been as expected, although that did improve in Yahoo&#8217;s most recent quarter.</p>
<p>Still, despite the improvement, Mayer called attention to the overall problem at a recent appearance at an investment conference.</p>
<p>&#8220;One of the points of the alliance is that we collectively want to grow share rather than just trading share with each other,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We need to see monetization working better, because we know that it can, and we&#8217;ve seen other competitors in the space illustrate how well it can work.&#8221;</p>
<p>By competitors, Mayer meant Google, whose share of the search market is close to 67 percent. Microsoft has just above 16 percent now, and Yahoo above 12 percent, a near flipping of share from two years ago.</p>
<p>Mann, who came to Yahoo in 2002, had been one of the execs at Yahoo who worked on the original deal under former CEO Carol Bartz, vetting the terms of the agreement for the company. While he has a degree from Canada&#8217;s University of Regina in business administration and computer science operations research, he is better known at the company for his deal-making and negotiating skills than as a techie or product exec.</p>
<p>That will be important, given that the end of the performance guarantee that Microsoft has had to pay to Yahoo since the partnership began comes in April.</p>
<p>Sources at Microsoft said the company is likely to extend the agreement without major concessions, but that any efforts to end the overall deal will be difficult for Yahoo.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is what [Yahoo] wants, and what&#8217;s possible,&#8221; said one person close to the situation.</p>
<p>In his new job, Mann will be in charge of improving the situation, which he has had some experience with. Mann, said one source, &#8220;used to spends hours at night on the phone with Microsoft trying to get concessions from their lack of RPS achievement,&#8221; referring to revenue per search.</p>
<p>Whether that means he can fix the situation &#8212; either by extricating Yahoo from the deal or improving Yahoo&#8217;s search experience to boost revenue and market share &#8212; is unclear. Mayer herself has a lot of search product chops from her time at Google, so she is expected to play a dominant role in the arena.</p>
<p>Another important effort for her, obviously, is still recruitment, given that a number of her choices for top product and tech jobs at Yahoo have been longtime veterans who were in place when the company was experiencing its continuing downward slide.</p>
<p>Among her options is buying a small search company, trying to end the Microsoft deal and perhaps strike another one with Google, or even reenter the search business with innovative engineers.</p>
<p>That is a big job. When Mayer was hired last summer, it was thought that she would bring in talent to reinvigorate Yahoo&#8217;s top echelons from outside the company.</p>
<p>But, for the most part, that has not happened, and she has appointed a lot of Yahoo&#8217;s longtime veterans to important roles in the turnaround.</p>
<p>For example, Mayer brought back <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121115/mayer-brings-back-ex-yahoo-rossiter-to-lead-platforms-memo-time/">Jay Rossiter</a> to run platforms, appointed <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130215/a-pair-of-top-yahoos-depart-while-another-promoted-with-more-to-come/">Scott Burke</a> to head advertising tech, and now has put Mann into a top job in search &#8212; all of whom report directly to her on her executive staff.</p>

<p>Yahoo reported its fourth-quarter earnings today, with earnings higher than expected, but with a continued flattish revenue. </p>
<p>The Silicon Valley Internet giant aid its non-GAAP net profits were 32 cents a share, compared to 25 cents in the same period a year ago. But GAAP net earnings per diluted share were 23 cents in the fourth quarter of 2012, compared to 24 cents last year.</p>
<p>Shares jumped just above four percent in after-hours trading to above $21 a share, given Wall Street analysts were estimating a profit of 27 cents per share in Q4. </p>
<p>Net revenue, without traffic acquisition costs, was expected to be $1.21 billion. It was $1.22 billion and which is essentially flat from a year ago&#8217;s $1.17 billion. Search  revenue was up nicely, while display sales declined. </p>
<p>Overall the results showed a non-sinking but none-too-powerful ship and not very impressive given almost every other Internet company grew revenue significantly in comparison. For example, Google reported last week that core revenue was up 21 percent in the quarter.</p>
<p>Still, up is up, even if it is not up that much. &#8220;I&#8217;m proud of Yahoo!&#8217;s 2012 and fourth quarter results. In 2012, Yahoo! exhibited revenue growth for the first time in 4 years, with revenue up 2 percent year-over-year,&#8221; said Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer in a statement.</p>
<p>In other words, she&#8217;ll take two percent, given the nearly persistent revenue declines of recent years. It is progress, of course, even if investors are looking for more robust increases ahead.</p>
<p>Also of note: Yahoo said it repurchased 79.6 million shares at an average price of $18.24 for $1.45 billion in the fourth quarter, which most definitely was one of the reasons for its recent stock run-up.</p>
<p>Yahoo did not release information on consumer engagement and traffic in the Q4 report, which it had done until Mayer took over. As <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130109/mayers-10x-challenge-yahoos-homepage-mail-and-search-traffic-show-significant-year-over-year-declines/">had previously reported</a>, most metrics in the quarter were down significantly over last year.</p>
<p>The fourth quarter was the first that was entirely under the new regime of Mayer, who arrive at Yahoo in July from Google.</p>
<p>She&#8217;s gotten a big break from Wall Street, which has sent Yahoo&#8217;s stock up in recent months on the hopes of her turnaround plans.</p>
<p>Last week, Mayer  said the long-suffering Silicon Valley giant would be returning <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130128/q4-will-marissa-mayers-back-to-its-roots-strategy-get-yahoo-back-to-the-future/">&#8220;back to its roots,&#8221;</a> as part of an effort to finally turn it around. It&#8217;s actually part of a bigger plan which <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> had reported on previously, to focus Yahoo on being a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130121/searching-for-relevance-yahoo-aiming-to-be-the-google-of-content/">center of content discovery</a> on the Web, across multiple devices, with wide-ranging and &#8220;very friendly&#8221; partnerships with other companies.</p>

<p>Even though it seems like a dog&#8217;s age, it has been only two years since AOL bought the Huffington Post at the Super Bowl XLV in Dallas (yes, papers were actually signed there).</p>
<p>Back then &#8212; after <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash/">AOL ponied up $315 million</a>, mostly in cash, to buy one of the Web&#8217;s most prominent news and opinion sites, along with one of the most famous women on the Web as its leader &#8212; the pair called it: &#8220;One plus one equals 11.&#8221;</p>
<p>Looking back today, it&#8217;s more like one plus one equals fireworks &#8212; given all the dramatic narrative that has ensued since the deal was struck. While it started off with a series of splashy joint appearances &#8212; hey, world, it&#8217;s the Tim and Arianna show! &#8212; some bumps in the road later resulted in a fair amount of tension between Armstrong and Huffington, which the two now say has passed. </p>
<p>That has included a big, ugly (but still riveting) fight among and between Armstrong, Huffington and Michael Arrington of TechCrunch, another AOL property. Without reliving the messy timeline and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110902/crunchfund-unethical-ventures-pigpile-partners-no-matter-what-you-call-it-its-business-as-usual-in-silicon-valley/">ethical traffic accident</a>, Arrington <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110912/its-official-arrington-out-at-aol/">left after a lot of Sturm und Drang</a>, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110906/give-me-back-my-baby-michael-arrington-trying-to-buy-back-techcrunch-from-aol-but-would-aol-sell-it/">verbally trashing Huffington</a> on his way out the door, even though he later returned to the fold as a columnist. </p>
<p>(Bygones? <em>Whatever!</em>)</p>
<p>More importantly, while her role was conceived much more broadly and horizontally at the time of the acquisition, as a kind of overall content ruler at AOL, that clearly did not work out as envisioned and &#8212; perhaps as it should have been from the start &#8212; it has since been made very vertical. </p>
<p>That has essentially meant Huffington gets to rule over her fast-expanding empire of global sites under her name, with Armstrong footing the investment and tending to fixing the other parts of the company.</p>
<p>Thus, for now at least, all&#8217;s well that ends well. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121226/taking-stock-of-internet-stocks-in-2012-and-the-winner-is-aol/">AOL&#8217;s stock has soared this year</a>, after a series of shrewd financial and organizational moves by Armstrong, and Huffington is ever busy opening yet another international Web outpost. </p>
<p>I checked in with both on how they are doing, in separate video interviews that I did last week in New York, where AOL is located. And to remember how this Web marriage started, I&#8217;ve also included the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110206/aols-tim-armstrong-and-huffpos-arianna-huffington-talk-about-deal-touchdown-from-super-bowl/">the one I did two years ago</a> in Dallas at the dawn of the relationship.</p>

<p>OpenX Software said it had raised $22.5 million in a Series E funding round, with Samsung Venture Investment Corporation as lead investor.</p>
<p>All told, the Los Angeles-based <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120213/ceo-tim-cadogan-talks-about-openxs-first-profitable-quarter-and-where-ad-tech-is-going-next-video/">online advertising technology company</a> has raised $70 million. Along with Samsung, existing investors &#8212; Accel Partners, Index<br />
Ventures, SAP Ventures, Mitsui &amp; Co. Global Investment, Inc. and Presidio Ventures &#8212; were also part of the new round.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have been building the company to continue to grow,&#8221; said OpenX CEO Tim Cadogan, who noted that the company had doubled its size and revenue in the last year. The company now has 260 employees.</p>
<p>He said that OpenX had a partnership with Samsung that it evolved into a financial arrangement to bring the Korean electronics giant &#8220;a little closer to the company.&#8221;</p>
<p>Cadogan said the new funding would be used for acquisitions and other expansion, especially into mobile, as it competes with rivals such as search giant Google.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are building a truly viable revenue program that goes across screens,&#8221; he said, pointing to two recent strategic acquisitions &#8212; LiftDNA and JumpTime.</p>
<p>Samsung&#8217;s Brannon Lacey said the company invested in OpenX because it was pioneering in the space. &#8220;As an investor, it is a fragmented market and there will be consolidation,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And OpenX is best positioned for that.&#8221;</p>
<p>OpenX said that it had grown its transactions from one trillion to four trillion from 2011 to 2012.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[The reality of traffic falloffs on key properties is a vexing issue.]]></description>

<p>This week in Las Vegas, the new management team running Yahoo &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121226/yahoos-mayer-hoping-what-happens-with-big-advertisers-at-ces-doesnt-stay-in-vegas/">including CEO Marissa Mayer</a> &#8212; is at International CES to schmooze with big advertisers and convince them that Yahoo is the place to put large chunks of their marketing budgets.</p>
<p>One of the longtime selling points of the company is the sheer size of its audience, especially for the key money-making parts of the site &#8212; the homepage, Yahoo Mail and search.</p>
<p>But private stats from comScore show that those three areas have continued their longtime decline over the last year, in some cases dropping significantly. In November and December, for example, compared to the same two months a year ago, U.S. search was down 28 percent and 24 percent respectively, while mail was down 16 percent and 12 percent. </p>
<p>This matters a great deal, since the troika of homepage, mail and search have been the critical driver of the Yahoo value ecosystem for advertisers. </p>
<p>The impact of those drops is felt all over Yahoo, whose music, movie, games and travel site have also seen massive drop-offs in traffic year over year in those same months. </p>
<p>Stopping the decline is critical for Yahoo, since Mayer herself has underscored the need for size in her pushing for new businesses at Yahoo that are 100 million users in size and/or have revenue prospects of at least $100 million. </p>
<p>While this is a lofty vision, the reality of traffic falloffs on key properties is a vexing issue, especially since they remain its main source of revenue and also an important element in launching future products Mayer is promising will turbocharge the company.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not that Yahoo is not huge, especially compared to most sites on the Web.</p>
<p>As one of the top Internet brands, according to a recent Nielsen report, the average number of total monthly unique visitors for the longtime Silicon Valley Internet company in 2012 was 141.6 million, No. 3 behind Google and Facebook in the U.S. market. Similar rankings were reported by comScore, which placed Yahoo at the No. 2 spot after Google, with 171.4 million monthly visitors in November.</p>
<p>But, for many years, traffic to those important consumer destinations of Yahoo has been on a clear and unstopping decline, statistics (usually from comScore) that the company nonetheless always dutifully puts in its earnings slides &#8212; see below &#8212; for investors to get some idea of the major and vexing issues facing the company.</p>

<p>That was suddenly ended in the last quarter with the engagement slide removed from Yahoo&#8217;s public deck entirely. Not all companies include such stats, so when I inquired as to why the company had made the change, Yahoo PR never returned my phone call.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s not hard to guess the reason for the shift &#8212; the numbers were not good and they called more attention to Yahoo&#8217;s glaring challenge, which is getting users reengaged with its products by creating what Mayer has dubbed several times &#8220;delightful&#8221; experiences.</p>
<p>According to numerous sources, that has also been the case within the company too, with the new regime restricting an internal transparency initiative pushed by former Chief Product Officer Blake Irving that shared product performance numbers with the top 100 leaders at Yahoo. </p>
<p>And while it&#8217;s an interesting strategic choice, several sources inside the company this week urged me to get ahold of increasingly worrisome numbers from comScore &#8212; available to its private clients &#8212; comparing November 2011 to November 2012 and also December 2011 to December 2012 at home and work in the U.S. </p>
<p>So I did, getting the same stats from numerous sources &#8212; numbers that a spokesman for comScore confirmed were correct.</p>
<p>And, as promised, they are worrisome indeed. </p>
<p>In November 2012, compared to November 2011, the monthly unique visitors to the homepage declined 17 percent to 91.8 million from 110.9 million; Yahoo Mail dropped 16 percent (from 92 million to 77.7 million); and Yahoo search dropped 28 percent (from 93.3 million to 66.9 million).</p>
<p>Also off significantly for all three areas, often by one-third, were a plethora of other stats: Percentage of reach, total minutes, total page views, total visits and more.</p>
<p>One of the only bright spots for Yahoo was the relatively small Flickr sites, which were up 37 percent &#8212; 26.7 million versus 19.4 million &#8212; in unique monthly visitors year over year. The photo-sharing site &#8212; which has been <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121212/flickr-jumps-into-mobile-photo-fray-with-new-insta-hip-filters/">getting a much-needed refresh</a> &#8212; was also up in all other stats. </p>

<p>But Flickr &#8212; which Mayer (pictured here) has laudably touted and supported after years of inexplicable neglect &#8212; is not a money-maker for Yahoo, even if its return does burnish the company&#8217;s tech and innovation cred.</p>
<p>In December 2011 to December 2012, the homepage was more stable, gaining four percent in monthly uniques from 109.4 million to 114.2 million, but with other key stats both rising and falling. Total visits were up 14 percent, for example, while average minutes per visit was down 13.6 percent.</p>
<p>But the trouble for mail or search continued, off 12 percent (89.9 million to 78.7 million) and 24 percent (88.7 million to 67.4 million) respectively in monthly uniques, with similarly major declines in all other stats. </p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121211/yahoo-updates-mail-adding-native-iphone-and-windows-8-apps-like-we-said/">Mail recently got a refresh</a> too under Mayer, despite some <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130107/yahoo-mail-endures-another-hacking-vulnerability/">recent security glitches</a>, so new stats will show if that will help stem the declines. Search is another story all together, with Yahoo in what can only be described as a dysfunctional partnership with Microsoft that numerous sources tell me Mayer is seeking to end.</p>
<p>The homepage, too, is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130105/yahoos-new-homerun-homepage-is-rolling-out-more-widely-across-several-browsers/">undergoing a redo</a>, with a design that has a decidedly more mobile and social feel, and pushing an ethos of Yahoo becoming a hub for content discovery. It is hoped the new look will boost traffic relatively quickly from its current downward trajectory. </p>
<p>To be fair, there can be lots and lots of reasons for these declines, although most of Yahoo&#8217;s competitors are, at worse, seeing a flattening of growth and not outright declines.</p>
<p>And sometimes Internet sites complain that services like comScore undercount, although Yahoo had previously used the firm in its public documents. More to the point, as multiple sources within the company note, the stats are directionally correct in that they closely track with internal Yahoo numbers.</p>
<p>Which is to say, traffic is going down rather than growing. That is clearly why Mayer has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121213/mobilemobilemobile-yahoo-eyes-hipster-teen-founded-summly-news-app/">loudly stressed mobile</a> since arriving at Yahoo, an area not included in these numbers that many sources said has strong growth to about 70 million monthly unique visitors via its apps and mobile-enabled Web offerings. </p>
<p>But unlike the homepage, mail and search &#8212; which push and pull traffic all over Yahoo and are responsible for most of its current monetization &#8212; mobile also makes very little money now. And Yahoo &#8212; unlike Facebook, which recently did &#8212; does not break out mobile results. </p>
<p>So, it will be interesting to see if the company does so when it reports fourth-quarter earnings on January 28 and also if it says anything about continued traffic declines of its traditional Web business in the period and the impact on revenue.</p>
<p>Still, there are lots of ways to counter declining or flat revenues, even with declining traffic &#8212; via cost cuts, efficiencies, charging more and selling assets (as Yahoo did in the last quarter). And Yahoo has ably managed to keep its operating margins growing over the years, despite both the declines in traffic and moribund growth in its revenue.</p>
<p>But the real and only fix is the drastic fix to existing tentpoles Yahoo has and the creation or acquisition of products that excite consumers and, therefore, advertisers.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not an easy thing, of course, as well-known venture capitalist <a href="http://bhorowitz.com/2012/12/18/programming-your-culture/">Ben Horowitz recently wrote in his blog</a> about the need to focus on products over building and improving culture &#8212; one of Mayer&#8217;s other big initiatives at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Wrote Horowitz in what I consider one of the clearest articulations of what it takes to win for startups, as well as big companies like Yahoo:</p>
<p>&#8220;The primary thing that any technology startup must do is build a product that&#8217;s at least 10 times better at doing something than the current prevailing way of doing that thing. Two or three times better will not be good enough to get people to switch to the new thing fast enough or in large enough volume to matter. The second thing that any technology startup must do is to take the market. If it&#8217;s possible to do something 10X better, it&#8217;s also possible that you won&#8217;t be the only company to figure that out. Therefore, you must take the market before somebody else does.&#8221;</p>

<p>As <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121210/in-seismic-shift-new-coo-de-castro-shifts-yahoo-ad-sales-to-category-model-backed-by-the-marissa-halo/">I had previously reported</a>, Yahoo&#8217;s key business unit &#8212; its advertising sales force &#8212; is now getting details of a reorganization by its new leader, COO Henrique De Castro.</p>
<p>In making the changes, just weeks ahead of Yahoo&#8217;s annual sales conference in Las Vegas on Jan. 21, De Castro is borrowing rather heavily from the set-up of the powerful ad business at Google, from whence he came.</p>
<p>By shifting the sales organization to a &#8220;category&#8221; model, sales reps at the Silicon Valley Internet giant will sell all of Yahoo&#8217;s ad products, as well as its search offerings, across channels in a vertical process organized around advertiser segments, such as automotive, entertainment and packaged goods.</p>
<p>Yahoo has long sold its advertising in a regional and tiered organization against premium and performance inventory in display and search, designed to avoid vertical conflict. Thus, the sales staff have built up advertiser relationships across many areas, which will not work in the new system.</p>
<p>Sources inside the company said regional leaders will now be shifted to running various verticals. There will be support specialists for those areas, too. </p>
<p>Mark Ellis, who was most recently VP of North American sales and global partnerships, will pay a key role in the new org, said sources. It is not clear, though, what role Peter Foster, who has headed audience advertising, will play. Another high-ranking exec, Keith Kaplan, has apparently been shifted to focus on agency relationships.</p>
<p>As I had previously written, there are many different ways to organize sales, but making such major change has potentially large ramifications on Yahoo&#8217;s financial performance, at least in the short term, since advertising makes up the bulk of its revenue.</p>
<p>According to numerous sources inside Yahoo, the changes are causing some measure of worry and confusion across the salesforce at the company, since it comes after a lot of wrenching changes over the last year.</p>
<p>That includes the departure of well-regarded <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121017/mayer-tells-staff-barrett-officially-out-at-yahoo/">Chief Revenue Officer Michael Barrett</a> in mid-October, after De Castro got the COO job. He has left a large gap in sales leadership and in maintaining strong relationships with big advertisers and agencies. De Castro himself is not as well known in the ad marketplace, despite many years at Google in its sales organization.</p>
<p>He will likely have a more high-profile <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121226/yahoos-mayer-hoping-what-happens-with-big-advertisers-at-ces-doesnt-stay-in-vegas/">next week at the International CES</a>, the huge annual consumer electronics show taking place in Las Vegas, along with new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who was a top product exec at Google. The pair is planning on meeting with major ad clients while there, which is their first significant outreach to marketers since taking their new roles at Yahoo.</p>
<p>De Castro had outlined the new ad reorg plan immediately after a multiday offsite with top sales leaders several weeks ago, and said the changes would come at the very beginning of 2013.</p>
<p>The ad staff at Yahoo begin to hear of the changes on Friday, so it looks like De Castro has met his deadline.</p>

<p>In what will be a major shift in how the Silicon Valley Internet giant sells online advertising, Yahoo&#8217;s new COO Henrique De Castro has briefed employees on a plan to move its sales organization to a &#8220;category&#8221; model, according to numerous sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>Simply put, that means its sales reps will sell all of Yahoo&#8217;s ad products, as well as its search offerings, in a vertical process organized around advertiser segments, such as automotive, entertainment and packaged goods.</p>
<p>This is how Google, where both De Castro and CEO Marissa Mayer recently worked, conducts its ad sales efforts. (After copying free food and smartphones, staff evaluation efforts and more, <em>What Would Google Do</em> seems to be strategery at Yahoo these days.)</p>
<p>In contrast, Yahoo has long sold its advertising in a regional and tiered organization against premium and performance inventory in display and search.</p>
<p>The move from regional to vertical is a &#8220;seismic shift,&#8221; said one source quite accurately. That&#8217;s because Yahoo&#8217;s go-to-market efforts have been designed to avoid vertical conflict and its sales staff have built up advertiser relations across many areas. In a vertical organization, those reps will be forced to give up these long-term relationships with marketers, some of which have been built over years.</p>
<p>There are, of course, many different ways to organize sales &#8212; and each has its fans and detractors. But one thing is clear: Making such a major change has potentially large ramifications on Yahoo&#8217;s financial performance, at least in the short term, since advertising makes up the bulk of its revenue.</p>
<p>The change might also result in some attrition among the sales staff, said sources, although many at Yahoo are expecting that De Castro will bring in his own execs from outside to help with the transition. (One interesting name I heard floated was former Googler Penry Price, who was close to De Castro when they both worked there. He is currently president of Media6Degrees, an ad targeting start-up.)</p>

<p>De Castro outlined the new ad org plan to staff immediately after a multi-day offsite with top sales leaders last week, at which Yahoo&#8217;s acquisition options in the ad tech market were also discussed. </p>
<p>Sources said De Castro noted that the changes could take place as early as January 1. </p>
<p>De Castro is also planning to have Yahoo&#8217;s annual global sales meeting for the end of January in Las Vegas. Last March, the gathering &#8212; then set for about 1,300 advertising staffers in Florida &#8212; was cancelled due to a restructuring under ousted CEO Scott Thompson.</p>
<p>In addition, sources said, Yahoo is planning on having a much more prominent presence at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show &#8212; also taking place in Las Vegas in January &#8212; in order to solidify its relationships with advertisers. </p>
<p>Its big weapon at the giant annual confab will apparently be Mayer, who has not yet interfaced significantly with the company&#8217;s big ad clients since taking the top job in July. At CES, sources said, Yahoo is hoping the &#8220;Marissa Halo&#8221; &#8212; i.e. excitement around the telegenic exec &#8212; will help boost its business.</p>

<p>They like her, they <em>really</em> like her.</p>
<p>Wall Street, that is, in regards to new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, assigning the former Google exec a clear premium.</p>
<p>And whether it is deserved or not yet from a pure performance perspective &#8212; we actually won&#8217;t know for several quarters ahead &#8212; the shares of the Silicon Valley Internet giant over the past three months have gone up 22 percent. The rise has taken place pretty much on the promise that she will finally be the one to deliver what no other Yahoo leader has done.</p>
<p>And that is, besides making the company relevant and innovative again: Getting Yahoo&#8217;s stock past $20 a share again. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s within striking distance now. Shares are at $18.40 today, close to an all-time high for the year. The recent rise certainly isn&#8217;t taking into account the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121022/hall-pass-yahoo-meets-lackluster-expectations-in-third-quarter-with-investor-focus-on-mayers-plans/">results of the recent lackluster third quarter</a>, which continued to show the worrisome downward trends &#8212; even though partial <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120911/exclusive-mayer-set-to-get-yahoos-alibaba-billions-in-one-week-but-will-investors-get-some-back-too/">asset sales of the company&#8217;s Chinese Alibaba stake</a> successfully masked the problems &#8212; in growth, engagement and overall profitability.</p>
<p>But Mayer&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121022/liveblogging-the-debut-of-yahoo-ceo-mayer-tailor-made-for-marissa/">confident I&#8217;ve-got-this tones on the earnings call</a> itself &#8212; especially in pushing a mobile strategy that has not been put in place as yet in any substantive way &#8212; won over Wall Street investors, who apparently like how she <em>sounds</em> and, thus, are intrigued with what she might <em>do</em>. </p>
<p>While this kind of perceptual game will only get Yahoo so far, moving out of the teens in share price would be an important benchmark for the company.</p>
<p>The stock was last at that level in August of 2008. At the time, in fact, $20 a share was considered very disappointing, taking place after Microsoft <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20080503/breaking-microsoft-walks/">dropped its $44.6 billion hostile bid</a> for Yahoo a few months earlier. Indeed, $20 was a big comedown from when Yahoo shares were above $43 in 2006. </p>
<p>The lowest price Yahoo shares got in recent years were $9.39 in November of 2008, just before then CEO and co-founder <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121022/liveblogging-the-debut-of-yahoo-ceo-mayer-tailor-made-for-marissa/">Jerry Yang stepped down</a>. </p>
<p>Now the stock is close to double that sad trough, fueled in part by some cosmetic moves to improve culture by Mayer &#8212; including <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120729/in-week-two-marissa-mayer-googifies-yahoo-free-food-friday-afternoon-all-hands-new-work-spaces-fab-swag/">free food</a>, smartphones and a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120825/sweet-mayer-declares-that-its-peanut-butter-jelly-time-at-yahoo/">promise to end the slow-moving decision-making</a> at Yahoo.</p>
<p>There has also been a start of the promised multi-billion-dollar stock buybacks by the company, although Yahoo has been cagey about how and when it is purchasing. Also helping, more recently, is that several big hedge funds are buying into the story of hope. </p>
<p>Following in the footsteps of successful activist shareholder Dan Loeb of Third Point, who is now on the board and is a major Yahoo investor, others like him have now joined in the party in a bigger way. That includes David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital and Chase Coleman of Tiger Global Management. </p>
<p><a href="http://i1.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2012/11/marissa_mayer_at_d_600-2.png"><img src="http://i1.wp.com/allthingsd.com/files/2012/11/marissa_mayer_at_d_600-2.png?resize=380%2C253" alt="" title="marissa_mayer_at_d_600-2" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-271996" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p>The thoughtful Einhorn, who is a friend of Loeb&#8217;s, has been in and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110708/yahoo-shares-dip-as-einhorn-sells-off-stake/">out</a> of the stock before, buying it on hopes that now ousted CEO Carol Bartz would be Yahoo&#8217;s savior and selling it soon after it was clear she might not be. He <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120215/welcome-back-einhorn-is-hedge-fund-back-in-yahoo-fray/">came back in February with three million shares</a>, sold them in May, but now has upped his stake to just over five million more under Mayer&#8217;s regime.</p>
<p>More substantively, Tiger&#8217;s Coleman has grabbed 25 million shares (interestingly, he&#8217;s also upped his stakes in Groupon and Facebook).</p>
<p>Obviously, they must believe Yahoo is set to move upward, which all depends on Mayer. She&#8217;s made one critical stock misstep early in her tenure, by announcing that she was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120809/mine-mine-all-mine-yahoo-says-it-might-just-keep-that-alibaba-money-for-itself-instead-for-shareholders/">considering keeping the huge cash windfall from its sale of Alibaba stock</a> and not giving it back to shareholders in some form.</p>
<p>That dropped Yahoo&#8217;s shares to under $15, but Mayer <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120918/yahoo-returning-3-65-billion-to-shareholders-but-in-buybacks-or-dividends/">walked back that mistake</a> and the stock has been climbing since.</p>
<p>For the year to date, it&#8217;s up almost 14 percent &#8212; a nice rise &#8212; although that pales in comparison to Apple&#8217;s 39 percent rise, Amazon&#8217;s 37 percent rise and, most of all, AOL&#8217;s 136 percent leap.</p>
<p>The comparison to the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120725/an-upbeat-q2-for-aol/">massive stock run that AOL has had</a>, after CEO Tim Armstrong &#8212; also a former Googler &#8212; cut costs, focused units, sold patents and bought back stock, is often made. It&#8217;s perhaps apt, but arguably Yahoo has much better and fixable assets than AOL.</p>
<p>More to the point, Yahoo&#8217;s price-to-earnings ratio remains unusually low &#8212; it&#8217;s 5.6, compared to the S&#038;P&#8217;s 14.2 average &#8212; which means that the entire business is severely undervalued by Wall Street.</p>
<p>It is if Mayer can create real value by actually staging the comeback she is already getting credit for accomplishing. She certainly has a lot of levers to improve results, from the stock buyback to finally making a deal to sell its multi-billion-dollar stake in Yahoo! Japan to making expense cuts to buying some innovative small start-ups to creating products that aren&#8217;t, <em>well</em>, lame.</p>
<p>Most importantly, Mayer has to stop the decimation of Yahoo&#8217;s once mighty advertising business, which makes up the bulk of its revenue, as well as improve its search monetization by <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120921/what-will-marissa-do-yahoo-ceo-zeroes-in-on-search-while-her-ad-team-eyes-tech-upgrade-options/">rejiggering its heretofore dysfunctional partnership</a> with Microsoft. (But, as I wrote earlier this week, she will <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121118/yahoo-and-facebook-not-in-search-alliance-discussions/"><em>not</em> be making new search engines with Facebook</a>.)</p>

<p>And, indeed, Yahoo&#8217;s sales have dropped 29 percent since 2007, with typically flat display revenue and declining search revenue, which was once Yahoo&#8217;s crown jewel. While operating margins have risen over the years, very few point to the company as an exciting growth story.</p>
<p>And it still isn&#8217;t, although investors are starting to consider it a possibility. We&#8217;ll see as Mayer makes more significant changes in 2013, hopefully underpinning the stock&#8217;s recent rise with a true story of financial strides. </p>
<p>But, for now, giddy shareholders probably should not get too far ahead of themselves. Not that you can stop them: Mayer fan <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/ericjackson/2012/11/07/heres-how-yahoo-gets-to-40-by-the-end-of-2013/">Eric Jackson</a> is calling for Yahoo&#8217;s stock to be over $40 again by end of 2013.</p>
<p>Whether the Mayer premium can do pull off that particular investor miracle or not remains to be seen. </p>

<p>Yahoo and Facebook are not currently in talks about forming a search alliance or building a search engine together, according to my sources, who scoffed about such a deal reported in a thinner-than-tissue-paper post by the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/mediatechnologyandtelecoms/9685619/Yahoo-plots-alliance-with-Facebook-in-new-search-deal.html">Telegraph</a> earlier today.</p>
<p>In addition, Yahoo is not anywhere near ending its search partnership with Microsoft, although new CEO Marissa Mayer has been in touch with the software giant about improving performance that has been less than lackluster over the course of its history so far.</p>
<p>Despite this, it would be nearly impossible for Yahoo to extricate itself from the long-term contract easily &#8212; though there are certain, but very difficult, outs. But sources tell me Microsoft would fight any attempt to end it earlier.</p>
<p>Thus, while Yahoo and Facebook have had a very good relationship of late, after the pair stopped warring over patents, and have also had success with its various sharing initiatives, a substantive search collaboration is not now in the mix. </p>
<p>Could the pair do more in terms of sharing among its users? Sure! Could they more tightly integrate services? Yep! Could they do something jointly related to advertising? Why not! But will they build a search engine together? Not likely. </p>
<p>Indeed, I am not even sure what such a thing means, since it would now be nearly impossible to execute, given Yahoo has outsourced its core search technology long ago to Microsoft and has been largely focused on improving search experience since then.</p>
<p>Of course, it&#8217;s no secret that Facebook is likely to enter the search arena in a more substantive manner in the future &#8212; CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has said so publicly &#8212; because people expect a better experience and users have been asking for years for improvements.</p>
<p>So watch that space, for certain, as it could also be very lucrative for the company and perhaps give search leader Google a bit more of a race.</p>
<p>But the social networking site is likely to work on its own in such an effort &#8212; as well as approach the space in much different ways. Hooking up with Yahoo would bring it almost nothing it might need to make it a success.</p>
<p>There are some interesting what-ifs to ponder with the idea of Microsoft, Facebook and Yahoo forming some kind of Avengers-style effort to battle Google, especially if it had a mobile element. But that&#8217;s the movie version at this moment. </p>
<p>(Speaking of movies, I am sorry it took me so long to get to this, but I was seeing the final &#8220;Twilight&#8221; with some <strong>All Things Digital</strong> staffers. I can report that the sparkly vampires of the film are <em>also</em> not in search alliance talks with Facebook.)</p>
<p>One unusual phrase in the Telegraph article did catch my eye though, which noted that &#8220;board members expect the talks to lead to much more substantial collaboration based around Web-based search.&#8221; </p>
<p>Such a Facebook search tie-up rumor would certainly do wonders for a Yahoo stock pop tomorrow for all the hedge funds now piling into the Silicon Valley Internet giant, would that it were so.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s not. </p>

<p>And the hits &#8212; and not happy ones &#8212; keep on coming with the imminent approach of Hurricane Sandy to New York City.</p>
<p>Along <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121027/sandy-is-also-a-perfect-digital-storm-google-cancels-nyc-android-event/">with cancellation of tomorrow&#8217;s Google Android product event</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121028/stormy-weather-d-dive-into-mobile-postponed-due-to-hurricane-sandy/">postponement</a> of our latest <strong>All Things Digital</strong> conference, <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong>, which was set to take place tomorrow and on Tuesday, Facebook is also now putting the kibosh on two events it was planning in Manhattan this week.</p>
<p>The first is a Tuesday engineering open house that was planned for the social networking site&#8217;s New York HQ in mid-town. And, more importantly, its larger Gifts event at FAO Schwartz is now off too.</p>
<p>A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed the cancellations. </p>
<p>Facebook <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121018/facebook-plans-press-events-for-gifts-nov-1/">was set to unveil retail partnerships</a> at the media gathering to &#8220;come see what&#8217;s new with Facebook Gifts,&#8221; after announcing the ability to buy physical gifts for other users last month.</p>
<p>It is the company&#8217;s major initiative into the world of social gift giving and e-commerce.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120927/say-hello-to-gifts-facebooks-new-mobile-revenue-stream/">Mike Isaac wrote</a> when it was announced in late September: </p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>It&#8217;s exactly what it sounds like. Users can choose, mail and pay for real-world, physical gifts &#8212; not the lame virtual ones Facebook offered a few years ago &#8212; to send to one another, all completely inside of Facebook. They&#8217;re tied to the significant event reminders that pop up on occasion &#8212; say, a friend&#8217;s anniversary, or a birthday. Or even better for Facebook, users can also just buy gifts for others for the heck of it.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a major undertaking for Facebook, tackling an entire new segment of online commerce and adding a brand new revenue stream to its business. And to a degree, we&#8217;ve known it was coming for some time &#8212; after all, on the same day Facebook went public, it acquired Karma, the social gifting application upon which all of Gifts is based and built.</p>
<p>Perhaps more significant, however, is that users aren&#8217;t limited to just the desktop to send and receive gifts; the entire Gifts program is accessible on mobile phones.</p></blockquote>

<p>In a post today on its policy blog, Yahoo took aim at Microsoft&#8217;s controversial &#8220;Do Not Track&#8221; default in its Internet Explorer 10 browser.</p>
<p>Said Yahoo in a post titled <a href="http://www.ypolicyblog.com/policyblog/category/privacy/">&#8220;In Support of Personal Experience&#8221;</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;Recently, Microsoft unilaterally decided to turn on DNT in Internet Explorer 10 by default, rather than at users&#8217; direction. In our view, this degrades the experience for the majority of users and makes it hard to deliver on our value proposition to them. It basically means that the DNT signal from IE10 doesn&#8217;t express user intent.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, Yahoo &#8220;will not recognize IE10&rsquo;s default DNT signal on Yahoo! properties at this time.&#8221;</p>
<p>Such a move should make Yahoo very popular with advertisers, most of which are publicly and privately decrying the Microsoft effort for their browser having advertising targeting and tracking turned off by default. </p>
<p>In fact, Yahoo&#8217;s statement of no-default-respect pretty much tracks on what the Digital Advertising Alliance, which represents thousands of major marketers, said recently, as well as the <a href="http://www.ana.net/content/show/id/analetter-microsoft">Association of National Advertisers</a>. </p>
<p>Both those groups and many others are seeking to kill DNT. </p>
<p>According to sources, the impetus for the Yahoo decision was CEO Marissa Mayer, a former Google exec. </p>
<p>Interestingly, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120913/google-finally-adds-do-not-track-support-in-latest-test-version-of-chrome/">Google recently added DNT support</a> to the latest version of its increasingly popular Chrome browser developer build. </p>
<p>And the third major browser, Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox, also offers a DNT product as a key feature. </p>
<p>Right now, Mayer is in discussions with the software giant about improving the weak results of its search advertising partnership, too. This should make those talks much more interesting.</p>
<p>In fact, in a longer privacy post today, titled <a href="http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_on_the_issues/archive/2012/10/26/privacy-and-technology-in-balance.aspx">&#8220;Privacy and Technology in Balance,&#8221;</a> Microsoft&#8217;s general counsel Brad Smith noted:</p>
<p>&#8220;Just because the signal is turned on doesn&#8217;t mean that a consumer wants no services that involve tracking. It means instead that consumers are empowered to make their own choices, including selecting services that involve tracking from advertisers and ad networks they trust.&#8221;</p>

Recently, Microsoft unilaterally decided to turn on DNT in Internet Explorer 10 by default, rather than at users&#8217; direction. In our view, this degrades the experience for the majority of users and makes it hard to deliver on our value proposition to them. It basically means that the DNT signal from IE10 doesn&#8217;t express user intent.</p>
<p>Ultimately, we believe that DNT must map to user intent &#8212; not to the intent of one browser creator, plug-in writer, or third-party software service. Therefore, although Yahoo! will continue to offer Ad Interest Manager and other tools, we will not recognize IE10&#8242;s default DNT signal on Yahoo! properties at this time.</p>
<p>Yahoo! is committed to working with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to reach a DNT standard that both satisfies user expectations and provides the best Internet experience possible. <p>NBCUniversal&#8217;s digital unit has hired well-regarded HBO exec Alison Moore to be EVP and GM for its women-focused online property DailyCandy.</p>
<p>The move is an interesting one for Moore, who has been a key player in the premium cable channel&#8217;s aggressive efforts in digital, including its much-praised HBO Go offering. Moore, a longtime HBO exec, has most recently been the Time Warner unit&#8217;s SVP of digital products.</p>
<p>At DailyCandy, the longtime online newsletter and Web site focused on fashion, food and lifestyle, she will report to Nick Lehman, president of digital for NBCU&#8217;s Entertainment &#038; Digital Networks and Integrated Media group. (NBCU is owned by Comcast.)</p>
<p>Moore&#8217;s job will be to turbocharge DailyCandy&#8217;s efforts on a range of platforms, and expand its user base of six million women, especially its video offerings.</p>
<p>She also will be working on various multiplatform programming partnerships with NBCU&#8217;s many television and digital assets, such as the Style Network.</p>
<p>Moore has worked for HBO since 1995, although at two different times. She left in 1999 to work on two Internet start-ups &#8212; Flooz.com and DatSat &#8212; and also at Cablevision. She returned to HBO in 2003.</p>
<p>&#8220;From my end, it is a huge opportunity to do something new and run a business,&#8221; said Moore in an interview yesterday. &#8220;At the same time, the user base is passionate and engaged, so it is not unlike HBO in that way.&#8221;</p>
<p>Moore said mobile was obviously a top priority, along with more app development and experiments with geolocation. DailyCandy already serves up a wide range of consumer information to women from cities across the U.S., including San Francisco and New York.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think the trick to any successful product is how do you create something with an authentic voice that consumers see value in,&#8221; said Moore. &#8220;This area is ripe for explosion, because great content is king.&#8221;</p>

<p>Young Hollywood, the high-profile next-gen digital media start-up, has hired a top Yahoo content exec, Liz Coughlin.</p>
<p>The Beverly Hills-based Young Hollywood named Coughlin SVP of business operations, overseeing new business initiatives and all digital operations.</p>
<p>At Yahoo for a decade, Coughlin was most recently in charge of omg!, one of the largest celebrity sites on the Internet, as well as Yahoo TV. She also worked on corporate strategy, partnerships and large events for the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p>Previous to Yahoo, she worked at the Digitas advertising agency. </p>
<p>&#8220;Right now, Young Hollywood is small, but it&#8217;s special, and where content production and media business is headed,&#8221; said Coughlin in an interview yesterday. &#8220;Trying to build new forms of content with the use of new devices and metrics and new forms of programming is an exciting place to be.&#8221;</p>
<p>Coughlin officially left Yahoo last week.</p>

<p>On Friday, I began a series about the various and sundry things new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer was up to at the Silicon Valley Internet giant. </p>
<p>First up was a look at how she is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120921/what-will-marissa-do-yahoo-ceo-zeroes-in-on-search-while-her-ad-team-eyes-tech-upgrade-options/">zeroing in on improving its troubled search efforts and advertising platforms</a>, two business arenas that will get more focus this week when Mayer unveils her plans to the employees of Yahoo at an all-hands meeting.</p>
<p>According to an internal memo Mayer sent out Friday, the confab is scheduled for Tuesday. It comes after two days of meetings with Yahoo&#8217;s board of directors last week, in which Mayer outlined the plans for she has come up with to turnaround the company.</p>
<p>[Special note to readers: I would, as usual, embed the entire memo below, but Yahoo's top execs -- most especially, newly installed general counsel Ron "Leaks Are 'Uncool'" Bell -- have worked themselves into quite a lather over the issue of late. Apparently, according to numerous sources, the company is using all kinds of leak-catching tech tools -- free smartphones <em>aren't</em> as free as you might think, if you catch my drift, Yahoos, and I would also advise turning up the music loud when whispering in the Sunnyvale HQ offices -- so I will only quote internal emails only in part going forward to thwart such silliness.]</p>
<p><em>Pressing on!</em> </p>
<p>In the memo, titled &#8220;Board slides, strategy and goals,&#8221; Mayer talked about the meetings. There will be two this Tuesday, one in the morning and one later in the day, in order to accommodate Yahoo staffers internationally.</p>
<p>&#8220;In an act of radical transparency that will be a tradition moving forward,&#8221; Mayer promised that she will go over the slides &#8212; which are usually not shared widely &#8212; of her &#8220;strategy and vision&#8221; that she presented at the board meeting on Friday.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to offer you transparency into what happens at the board level as well as guidance as to where the company is going,&#8221; Mayer noted.</p>
<p>Kudos to that! (And send all that transparency my way, please!)</p>
<p>Mayer also said in the memo that she will have another all-hands meeting on October 1, where she will begin &#8220;rolling out a new system and process for goals for the company,&#8221; including annual goals that will be tracked and graded &#8212; first on a company level, then to departments, teams and, finally, individuals.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a good idea, of course, because tracking such things has not been a focus of Yahoo for a while now. Not surprisingly, it is very much a practice at Google, from whence Mayer came and where she has been liberally borrowing a wide variety of management concepts. </p>
<p>But she has a few of her own tricks up her sleeve too, according to many sources, in terms of the strategy.</p>
<p>As I previously wrote, Mayer is planning on doubling down on search, as well as advertising platforms. Expect more money spent in both places, as well as a redo of Yahoo&#8217;s long-rocky search partnership with Microsoft.</p>
<p>Also up for a refresh is both email and also the critically important Yahoo home page. Both are being redesigned substantially to focus on consumer experience. People who have seen the mock-ups describe them both as more social and as more of a dashboard approach for users than the traditional catch-all portal. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s all based around learning technology that Yahoo has been working on called CORE, or Content Optimization and Relevance Engine. There will be lots of linking out and an attempt to make Yahoo more of a platform for others to develop on top of. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s a little Facebook-like, said several sources, but more focused on content and other products that differentiate Yahoo. Mayer has decided to back 10 key arenas, such as its powerful Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Sports sites, as well as its Flickr photo offering. </p>
<p>Still, no redesign is set in stone yet, so we&#8217;ll see what Mayer has decided on.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also not clear what the e-commerce focus will be, but it is also an area that Mayer has a lot of experience in. Also a big question: What the heck is Yahoo&#8217;s non-existent mobile strategy going to be?</p>
<p>In addition, Mayer has already ordered the removal of some ads from both Yahoo&#8217;s email service and also its home page, cutting them back to improve the consumer experience. That&#8217;s a dicey move since Yahoo makes a big chunk of change from those ads, especially on the home page. </p>
<p>No matter. &#8220;Everything she is doing is about the consumer experience,&#8221; said a source. &#8220;Nothing else matters to her, even if it might matter to the bottom line.&#8221;</p>
<p>So far, Wall Street has been wary of Mayer until they see a strategy &#8212; the stock has been sitting in the $15 range since she arrived. That said, the high-profile exec does have more leeway from investors, and &#8212; perhaps most importantly &#8212; from the board.</p>
<p>In fact, at her now weekly Friday meeting for employees, a big group of the directors appeared onstage in a show of support.</p>
<p>A purple show, apparently &#8212; all were wearing lavender Yahoo t-shirts with &#8220;BoD&#8221; stamped on them. </p>
<p><em>Awwwwww!</em> It&#8217;s like a mostly all-boy band! One, by the way, that might get more members soon. Sources told me that director Dan Loeb has been on the hunt to add at least one more person to the group, focusing on landing a Silicon Valley star. </p>
<p>When he was waging his proxy battle on Yahoo he tried to recruit both SurveyMonkey and former Yahoo David Goldberg and also well-known entrepreneur Max Levchin of PayPal and Slide. </p>
<p>While Goldberg joining the Yahoo board is not happening &#8212; he just joined the board of the Washington Post &#8212; getting Levchin to sign on seems more likely, especially with the focus on attracting innovative talent to the company.</p>
<p>Levchin is definitely that, as are many others Loeb has apparently been trying to buttonhole of late.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s been nice to see all the euphoria at Yahoo about <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120729/in-week-two-marissa-mayer-googifies-yahoo-free-food-friday-afternoon-all-hands-new-work-spaces-fab-swag/">free food</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120821/this-week-in-marissya-iphones-for-all-flickr-love-and-management-musical-chairs/">Apple iPhones</a> kicking it up a notch. </p>
<p>But, purple people, guess what? <em>Them&#8217;s</em> just your basic table stakes in Silicon Valley these days and pretty much everyone else has had such perks for a long while now.</p>
<p>Thus, as nice as it is to drink your coconut water gratis, after two months in charge, it&#8217;s long past time to focus on what new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is up to besides making much-needed but obvious cultural changes at the troubled Internet giant.</p>
<p>She&#8217;s been busy with the expected listening tour of employees and also outside tech players &#8212; such as former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel &#8212; which is a textbook stop in the turnaround playbook.</p>
<p>Now comes the hard part: Actually beginning to make the significant decisions about how she&#8217;s going to turn around Yahoo and what the key issues of strategic focus need to be. </p>
<p>In a series of recent meetings, according to numerous sources inside the company, Mayer has begun to outline what those are to top staff.</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, they are many of the same thorny issues that Yahoo has been facing for a long time and which center primarily on making the company relevant again in a wide number of ways.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll get to many of them over the next week in a series of What Will Marissa Do? posts &#8212; including looking closely at her new hires, when and how Mayer will deal with inevitable layoff decisions facing the company, where the sale of Yahoo! Japan stands and, finally, what she&#8217;s cooking up for key Yahoo products.</p>
<p>But the focus has to fall first of all on search and advertising, the two arenas that Mayer has been studying most closely, according to numerous sources close to the situation. </p>
<p>That has included a recent meeting and numerous discussions with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer about improving Yahoo&#8217;s search advertising partnership, said sources at both companies. </p>
<p>That deal has been largely disappointing since it was struck under the regime of ousted CEO Carol Bartz several years ago. </p>
<p>Many reasons are given for the poor performance of the entire arrangement, including lack of improvement of cost per click and share growth for both parties. That means bid density and numbers of advertisers remain too low, especially compared to Google&#8217;s offering of access to a larger, more active and lucrative market.</p>
<p>Simply put, despite massive spending by Microsoft on search, users and advertisers get significantly better results overall with the search leader Google.</p>

<p>The irony abounds that it&#8217;s up to Mayer to fix this problem of improving revenue per search with Ballmer, since she has been among the executives who have made Google the search behemoth it has become. </p>
<p>Her particular expertise has been on search experience for consumers, which is just the area that Yahoo desperately needs to improve after handing over technology duties to Microsoft.</p>
<p>That move was controversial at the time and some feel it was a big mistake. But, most also think there is no going back at this point, given the enormous cost of running a serious search enterprise. </p>
<p>Such an idea is still being raised inside Yahoo, although it seems more nostalgic than a realistic possibility, given the enormous price and, more importantly, the departure of the company&#8217;s core search engineers in recent years. </p>
<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean Yahoo under Mayer can&#8217;t be key to helping solve Microsoft&#8217;s search tech problems. She certainly knows the entire arena, which has already given Yahoo increased credibility among Microsoft&#8217;s search engineers.</p>
<p>&#8220;None of Yahoo&#8217;s many CEOs knew anything about search technology and that&#8217;s certainly not the case here with Mayer,&#8221; said one person close to the situation at Microsoft. &#8220;When she walks in, she instantly has status among the geeks as someone who knows what she&#8217;s talking about.&#8221;</p>
<p>It still may be a losing battle, due to Google&#8217;s overwhelming dominance, but if anyone at Yahoo can spot areas of even small improvement &#8212; which can yield big returns &#8212; it could be Mayer.</p>
<p>In addition, she can spearhead Yahoo&#8217;s own efforts to reverse &#8212; or perhaps simply stop &#8212; search market share declines via delivering a better consumer offering. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s still heavy lifting, no matter the exec, since both Microsoft&#8217;s Bing and Google are better equipped to win here, too.</p>
<p>&#8220;It hard to imagine we are going to slow down in any way,&#8221; said one former colleague of Mayer&#8217;s at Google to me recently in a rather ominous tone. &#8220;We&#8217;re only going to get more competitive.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Pressure much?</em> </p>
<p>And more: Mayer is under a time limit, since guaranteed payments Microsoft agreed to pay Yahoo for the shortfalls on what was promised will be running out next year. The pair has renegotiated that deal before, and it will likely have to do so again.</p>
<p>Of course, Mayer could try to walk and threaten to take Yahoo&#8217;s search business elsewhere, a move that former CEO Scott Thompson was mulling before his ouster. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s not a surprising ploy, except it is probably impossible to pull off, a fact acknowledged by top Yahoo execs.</p>
<p>&#8220;It might feel good to say we have options in search,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;But that ship sailed years ago.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, especially since Google is the only choice of possible alternate partners and such a move is rife with major obstacles.</p>
<p>There is the issue of the contract with Microsoft, which could lead to a potentially explosive legal struggle Yahoo can ill afford.</p>
<p>&#8220;They can try to get out of the deal,&#8221; said one high-ranking person at the software giant. &#8220;But that&#8217;s a lot easier threatened than done.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, there is the clear regulatory hairball any search hook-up between Google and Yahoo would lead to. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s happened before, which Mayer knows well since she was a top exec in Google&#8217;s business when it tried to partner with Yahoo as a way to prevent Microsoft&#8217;s hostile takeover bid for the company. </p>
<p>While times might have changed, Google is currently facing a likely battle with the Federal Trade Commission over its powerful search business, and trying to get Yahoo&#8217;s business now is a non-starter.</p>
<p>Thus, finally fixing the Microsoft partnership is key to Mayer&#8217;s success since it represents a little over one-third of revenue of Yahoo (see the chart below).</p>

<p>The bigger part of Yahoo&#8217;s business, as you can also see from the chart, has been display revenues. And that, too, has been a sorry tale of declines and ever more disappointing results.</p>
<p>A report by eMarketer on display market share had this depressing chart for Yahoo:</p>

<p>As is clear, the march downward for one-time leader Yahoo has been swift, and the prospects for the future are worse as Google and Facebook vie for leadership.</p>
<p>The reasons for this have been myriad, but Mayer has apparently decided that it&#8217;s been due in large part to the broken Yahoo ad tech platforms and their ever weaker performance. </p>
<p>As we have previously reported, she has determined that it&#8217;s now time to invest in improving them, both by funding internally and external acquisitions.</p>
<p>For that, she has formed a tight group of execs to scan the landscape for tasty and innovative treats for Yahoo to gobble up.</p>
<p>That includes: Scott Burke, SVP of Yahoo&#8217;s advertising and data platforms; Brian Silver, who runs the company&#8217;s Right Media Exchange; Xuhui Shao, a key engineering VP under Burke; and Mark Morrissey, the longtime tech exec who previously ran the company&#8217;s search business and was key to integrating the Microsoft search deal into place.</p>
<p>The cerebral Burke especially has been pushing ad platform improvement for a while and finally seems to have won the battle against detractors of the big and possibly grandiose plan by appealing to Mayer&#8217;s interest in not giving up. </p>
<p>Thus, the tabling of plans by Thompson, as well as interim CEO Ross Levinsohn, to outsource some of the automated parts of the display business to Google.</p>
<p>Those talks were very serious, as well as others to sell off Right Media, but they are done for now.</p>
<p>One major issue &#8212; the people in charge of the ad platform turnaround could also be seen (and most definitely are) as mired in Yahoo&#8217;s legacy of lackluster results and poor performance. </p>
<p>&#8220;It is kind of funny that the guys responsible for the decline now have the responsibility for fixing it,&#8221; said one source at Yahoo.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a fair point to be made.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s water under the bridge, apparently, since the group has been making the rounds, helped by Yahoo&#8217;s M&#038;A execs, with a wide range of companies in many different ad tech area being considered (and some dismissed), including: Mediaocean, Turn, Criteo, PubMatic and Millennial Media.</p>
<p>Millennial is the most interesting, because it is a mobile ad play, where Yahoo is exactly nowhere (to be fair, less than nowhere) after years of botched efforts. </p>
<p>As with other companies, this is a critical arena for Yahoo, and yet one more that Mayer needs to focus on. </p>
<p>Lastly, Mayer has to make sure Yahoo&#8217;s premium display business remains strong. This is much more based on relationships with large advertisers than on major sponsorship and branding offerings, as well as creating consumer products and content that is appealing to marketers.</p>
<p>This area is now headed up by former Google exec Michael Barrett, who has publicly said he was staying put for now at Yahoo as its chief of revenue. </p>
<p>In fact, because he is in charge of all sales, he occupies the second slot under Mayer on Yahoo&#8217;s now strangely configured, punctuation-impaired and information-free <a href="http://pressroom.yahoo.net/pr/ycorp/management.aspx">management page</a>. </p>
<p>But numerous sources inside and outside Yahoo said Barrett has also told many people that he is still not fully committed to staying in the role for the long haul.</p>
<p>If he eventually gets a lucrative exit package &#8212; something the new boss is not being very generous with overall, said sources &#8212; that will mean Mayer will need a high-profile and well-regarded ad exec to replace him; sources said Mayer has already begun reaching out to some candidates. </p>
<p>The pickings are slim, with only a few names on the list of those capable of taking on such a job. That includes: Demand Media&#8217;s Joanne Bradford, who was also a former top Yahoo exec; Microsoft&#8217;s Yusuf Mehdi; OWN&#8217;s Kathleen Kayse; MLB.com&#8217;s Bob Bowman; and any number of Google execs. </p>
<p>In that regard, as with all the other search and advertising overhaul efforts at Yahoo, it is a matter of attracting serious talent into the company going forward. </p>
