Philips's CEO Urges Local Strategies for Emerging Markets

When Philips Electronics NV Chief Executive Gerard Kleisterlee retires next year from the electronics conglomerate he has led for a decade, he will leave a company that is increasingly focused on emerging markets. Mr. Kleisterlee, 63 years old, has pushed the company to get growth from developing markets, especially China and Latin America, where health care, lighting and consumer products are gaining momentum.

IBM Patents its Patenting Prowess

IBM adds that it has patented its prowess at patenting: U.S. patent #7,630,915 “Intellectual property management method and apparatus” on December 8, 2009. IBM Corp. topped the list of corporate patent issuers in 2008 for the 17th year in a row and says it will use its prowess to help other companies file and manage patents. The Armonk, NY, based technology giant received 4,914 new patents in 2008, according to IFI Patent Intelligence in Wilmington, Delaware.

Online High Schools Test Students' Social Skills

Tatyana Ray has more than 1,200 Facebook friends, sends 600 texts a month and participated in four student clubs during the year and a half she attended high school online, through a program affiliated with Stanford University.
