		<description><![CDATA[The hacking group Anonymous raised eyebrows today for its "daring hacker raid" on the servers of NATO. What did it take? A bunch of documents that so far seem, well, boring, really.]]></description>

Not likely.</p>
<p>The hacking group Anonymous claimed via its Twitter feed to have breached servers belonging to NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization military alliance that has largely been responsible for the military defense of Europe since the end of World War II.</p>
<p>So far, three PDF copies of documents the group claimed to have taken in the attack were circulating on <a href="http://pdfcast.org/">a sharing site devoted to PDF documents</a>. Two were marked &#8220;NATO Restricted&#8221; and appear to have been removed from the PDFCast site.</p>
<p>I haven&#8217;t seen the first two, but the Telegraph <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/8652328/Nato-investigates-Anonymous-hacking-claims.html">described one</a> as a working paper on communications systems used by NATO forces in Afghanistan, and was said to include technical and procurement information. A second concerned a plan to outsource communications for NATO forces stationed in Kosovo. If it sounds exciting, then I have some news for you: It&#8217;s not.</p>
<p>&#8220;Restricted&#8221; may sound important. As <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/07/21/nato_restricted/">the Register points out</a>, in the taxonomy of document labels, &#8220;Restricted&#8221; is for documents of relatively low importance. Anonymous is crowing like it has just broken into a trove of NATO&#8217;s deepest secrets. It appears instead they&#8217;ve taken some documents relating to relatively mundane workaday operations.</p>
<p>Higher up the scale are documents that get stamped &#8220;Confidential,&#8221; then &#8220;Secret&#8221; and then &#8220;Top Secret.&#8221; </p>
<p>A third document which just emerged via the @AnonymousIRC Twitter feed is a 59-page document concerning NATO security procedures. It is marked &#8220;NATO Unclassified&#8221; which is actually even lower on the totem pole than &#8220;Restricted.&#8221; The only restriction is that they&#8217;re subject to NATO copyright and can only be released with NATO permission. Not that NATO is going to care very much. This very document has been <a href="http://cryptome.org/nato-cm2002-49.htm">floating around since 2006</a>.</p>

<p>NATO issued a statement saying that it is aware of the claim of the breach and is investigating. And it certainly will, but it&#8217;s not as if significant alarm bells are likely to be ringing at NATO Headquarters over this, at least not from the documents seen so far, though the group claims to be holding back on releasing some documents it says &#8220;most of which we cannot publish as it would be irresponsible.&#8221; It promises more releases in the coming days.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, if that weren&#8217;t enough, Anonymous and its ally LulzSec jointly taunted the FBI today. Responding to a quote given to National Public Radio in the story below, the groups issued a joint statement saying, &#8220;Your threats to arrest us are meaningless.&#8221; The statement appears below the radio story.</p>
<p>For those not keeping score, LulzSec is the group that claimed credit for attacking Sony <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110604/sony-hacked-for-what-seems-to-be-the-umpteenth-time/">umpteen times</a>, then went on to attack other <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110613/lulzsec-strikes-again-hits-bethesda-softworks-and-u-s-senate/">game companies</a> and the U.S. Senate, then stole emails and other documents from servers belonging to the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110624/arizona-confirms-lulzsec-docs-are-authentic-worries-about-officer-safety/">Arizona State Police</a>. It also stole internal documents <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110627/laughs-just-keep-on-coming-lulzsecs-final-release-contained-malware/">from AT&#038;T</a>.</p>
<p>LulzSec in recent weeks <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110625/at-the-heigh-of-their-infamy-lulzsec-hackers-call-it-quits/">claimed it had been absorbed</a> by the larger group Anonymous, but the lines appear to be blurring again, as it is at times active under its own banner. Two people connected to LulzSec&#8217;s activities were among 16 arrested in a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/16-arrested-in-nationwide-hacker-crackdown/">nationwide FBI operation</a> earlier this week. Fourteen others were arrested in connection with a denial of service attack against PayPal in sympathy with WikiLeaks.</p>
<p>The new statement is in reaction to a statement by an FBI assistant director saying the bureau wants to &#8220;send a message&#8221; about computer crime. The hacker group&#8217;s reaction essentially dares law enforcement to take further action. Something tells me they may get their wish.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> Is there software available to allow one to run Apple-compatible apps on Android tablets?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> None of which I&#8217;m aware. However, bear in mind many of the most popular apps for the iPhone are now available in versions for Android phones. My guess is that, over time, if Android tablets start selling in large numbers, the same phenomenon is likely to occur, with at least the top apps for the iPad being issued in versions for Android tablets.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I subscribe to 10 magazines. When I want to save an article I tear it out and file it away. I was wondering if there is another way to save articles by faxing/photocopying them and sending them as an attachment to a remote site accessible anywhere in the world. I would be willing to pay for the site but it has be easy to use.</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> The answer is yes, but not exactly in the way you envision. If you&#8217;re starting with paper, you&#8217;d have to scan the articles into digital files and then upload them to a service or site that&#8217;s universally accessible. One good candidate is Evernote, at evernote.com. It allows you to file away a wide variety of digital files, including the PDF files you&#8217;d likely create from scanning, and then access them from any PC, or Mac, or from many smartphones and tablets. In fact, some scanners can directly send the files they create to Evernote, or you can email attachments directly to your Evernote account.</p>
<p>The other option is to read your magazines digitally, and save the articles directly from the digital editions, skipping the scanning step. Evernote can handle this approach, but there are other options. </p>
<p>A service called Instapaper can save Web pages for later reading, and works on computers, iPhones, and iPads.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I have a MacBook Pro for personal use—mostly Web browsing, emails, calendar, Facebook, etc. I want an iPad 2 but need to sell my MacBook in order to fund the purchase. If I do this, what will I miss most about my MacBook Pro?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> All of the things you say you do on the laptop can be done very nicely on the iPad 2. However, you will lose some significant advantages that any laptop offers. These include a built-in physical keyboard; a larger screen; the ability to view Flash videos in the browser; and direct connectivity to external devices like hard disks, wired Internet connections, and wired printers. Also, though you didn&#8217;t mention it, you might miss the option of using a wide variety of much more powerful productivity programs than exist today for the iPad.</p>

<p>Earlier today, Yahoo reported its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110419/yahoos-first-quarter-earnings-the-revenue-drought-continues-due-to-search-fall-off/">first-quarter earnings</a>, which showed revenue and earnings declines, which the Silicon Valley Internet portal said was due to its search and advertising partnership with Microsoft.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110419/liveblogging-yahoos-1q-earnings-call-get-me-to-funky-town/">liveblogged the conference call</a> with Wall Street analysts, but there&#8217;s more deets to peruse and numbers to crunch&#8211;in order to figure out whether to blame Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer or not.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>While it can perform many of the functions of a PC or Mac, Apple&#8217;s iPad— including the new iPad 2—lacks two of the most common and frequently used features of a traditional computer. It has no standard USB port for connecting a flash drive or external hard disk, so you can&#8217;t move files into and out of it from these devices. And it doesn&#8217;t have a systemwide, user-accessible file system like those on traditional computers.</p>
<p>These omissions have led many readers to ask me how you get files—especially Microsoft Office files and PDFs—into and out of iPads. They have bolstered the contention that the popular tablet is really just a &#8220;consumption device,&#8221; not a productivity tool. </p>

<p>So, here&#8217;s a brief primer on how to get such documents into and out of an iPad, and how to view, edit and create them on the tablet. This isn&#8217;t an in-depth product review, though I&#8217;ve tested every product and method I will mention here. It&#8217;s merely a quick, practical guide to how to work with documents on an iPad.</p>

<p>Before we start, let me mention some caveats. First, to get the most out of documents on the iPad, you have to download add-on apps. Second, while many of these apps can store and organize files, those file systems are silos within the apps. Third, these apps often lack full fidelity with Office on a PC or Mac, especially for complex documents. Fonts and layouts may be changed, and none of the apps I tested was able to display revision histories in Office documents.</p>
<p>Finally, unless you buy an add-on keyboard, typing on an iPad isn&#8217;t as easy for many people as on a regular computer. For instance, I wouldn&#8217;t want to type a 30-page legal brief on an iPad. But you can use an iPad with Office documents and PDFs.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Creating and Editing Files</h5>
<p>Microsoft hasn&#8217;t built a version of Microsoft Office for the iPad. But several companies make office suites for the tablet that aim to emulate Office by allowing you to create and export Office-compatible documents, and to import and edit documents created in Office on PCs and Macs.</p>
<p>The three most notable of these are Quickoffice Connect, which costs $15; Documents To Go, which comes in two versions costing $10 and $17; and Apple&#8217;s Pages, Numbers and Keynote, which cost $10 each.</p>
<p>All of these apps are more limited than Office on a PC, but I have found they worked pretty well. All have their own internal file-storage system, and each can be connected to cloud-based services, or can open email attachments or receive wired file transfers from iTunes.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wired File Transfers</h5>
<p>When you plug an iPad into one of the recent versions of Apple&#8217;s iTunes program on your computer, and select the iPad icon in the left column, a section appears at the bottom of the Apps tab that is called File Sharing. This module lists all the apps on your iPad that can handle various kinds of documents, and shows you what files they contain. You can then add files from your computer to one of the listed apps, or save the files to your computer, using buttons labeled Add or &#8220;Save to….&#8221; Even veteran iTunes users may not know about this feature, because Apple hasn&#8217;t publicized it much, and you have to scroll down in iTunes to see it.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Viewing Email Attachments</h5>
<p>Out of the box, the iPad allows you to view a wide variety of documents attached to emails. If somebody emails you a Microsoft Office file, a PDF file, or other common types of files, you get an icon in the email, and, if you tap and hold your finger on the icon, a pop-up menu appears that allows you to view it in full-screen mode, a function called Quick Look. Just this week, I used this method to review and catch an error in a Microsoft Word document I received from a colleague while riding in a New York taxi with an iPad. </p>
<p>If you have an app like Quickoffice installed that allows saving or organizing documents, or editing them, the email pop-up menu becomes even more useful. In addition to the Quick Look option, it gives you an &#8220;Open In…&#8221; option that lets you move the document to an app of your choice, where you can store it permanently, or even edit it, if the app allows for that. This &#8220;Open In…&#8221; option also appears in various apps other than email, so you can move documents from one app to another.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wireless File Transfers</h5>
<p>There are some iPad apps available that allow you to move documents wirelessly if your computer and iPad are on the same Wi-Fi network. One that I have used successfully is called Air Sharing and costs $2.99. It mounts your iPad on your computer as if it were an external drive, and allows you to drag files between your computer and iPad.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Cloud-Based File Transfers</h5>
<p>If you back up your PC or Mac files to a cloud-based remote service, like SugarSync, Dropbox, or Apple&#8217;s own iDisk, many of these services provide iPad apps that allow you to fetch the files to your iPad, or, in some cases, upload files from your iPad to these services. These apps typically allow you only to view or perhaps store the files on the iPad, but some include the &#8220;Open in…&#8221; feature to let you move the file to another app where you can edit it.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Sophisticated File Viewers</h5>
<p>Some apps for the iPad let you store large numbers of different types of files, view them and even annotate them. My favorite, GoodReader, is a $4.99 app that handles all the Microsoft Office file types, plus PDFs and more. </p>
<p>GoodReader even lets you type notes on, or draw on, PDFs, and then save and email the annotated version. It also allows you to organize files into folders and rename them. And it lets you retrieve files from cloud-based services, without having to switch to a separate app provided by those services. Among the cloud services it supports are Google Docs, Dropbox, SugarSync and iDisk.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Bottom Line</h5>
<p>It&#8217;s perfectly fair to criticize Apple for leaving out a USB port and a shared file system. The company is reputed to be working on a cloud-based file sharing system that may alleviate these omissions. But, even today, you can work with common file types on an iPad, if you know how.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It’s tax season, which means cyber-thieves are trawling the Web and sending counterfeit email in the hopes of snaring your personal tax data. And they’ve created websites with reasonable-seeming addresses and legitimate-seeming emails in order to lure unsuspecting citizens into clicking on the wrong link or downloading a virus-laden PDF.</p>
<p>They’ve been working on this particular scam for many months. Jeff Horne, director of threat research for anti-virus vendor Webroot, says an email account he set up to attract and study these types of email has received over one million phony tax-related messages since November.</p>
<p>These cyber-crooks also begin publishing malicious sites early in the tax season, with pages that allow people to download IRS forms for filing. “They automatically deliver the malware without you even realizing it,” said Horne. Whether delivered via email or a visit to a malicious site, the viruses lurk on your hard drive looking for keywords related to tax filing, such as social security numbers, street addresses, employer names and income, and then sends it back to the cyber-crooks.</p>

<p>The suite–dubbed Acrobat X–builds on features introduced in 2008 in Acrobat 9, which allows users to embed and view video, Web pages and other dynamic content in PDF files. (The Adobe-originated technology stands for portable document format, for those thay may have forgotten).</p>
<p>By allowing users to include a wide variety of content in PDF files, Adobe hopes to capitalize on “the need that people have today to communicate with a lot more rich media” and eliminate the need for users to send different types of content in separate files, says Rob Tarkoff, senior vice president of Adobe’s Digital Enterprise Solutions unit.</p>

<p>Hearst is the latest publisher to show up on the iPad, with a tabletized version of Esquire.* As always, you&#8217;re better off <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/esquire/id394914656?mt=8">checking it out yourself</a> then reading about it.</p>
<p>Still here? Okay:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100715/is-there-an-ipad-premium-hearst-says-its-popular-mechanics-app-may-cost-more-than-the-print-version/">As promised</a>, Hearst is selling the app at the same price as the paper-and-ink version: $4.99. Squawk all you want, but &#8220;we have to reshape expectations&#8221; for digital pricing, says Esquire publisher Kevin O&#8217;Malley.</li>
<li><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100715/is-there-an-ipad-premium-hearst-says-its-popular-mechanics-app-may-cost-more-than-the-print-version/">Hearst has talked about offering subscriptions to its iPad titles</a>, but you can&#8217;t get one right now. And O&#8217;Malley doesn&#8217;t sound hopeful that he&#8217;ll be offering one through Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) store anytime soon. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100728/time-inc-s-ipad-problem-is-trouble-for-every-magazine-publisher/">Join the club</a>.</li>
<li>Like every one of its peers, Esquire on the iPad looks like the print magazine, with some multimedia bells and whistles. Unlike many apps, Esquire doesn&#8217;t provide a literal translation of the print copy. So it can&#8217;t count app sales as newsstand sales, but O&#8217;Malley seems fine with that. The upside for the reader is that Esquire doesn&#8217;t need to include every ad from the print edition, and instead features just two ads from a single sponsor&#8211;Lexus.</li>
<li>Many of the multimedia features are low-key grace notes, but that&#8217;s okay: You buy Esquire on the iPad because you want to read Esquire on the iPad, right?</li>
<li>But there are plenty of clever touches, like animated illustrations and a clip of Javier Bardem reciting poetry in Spanish. And, pretty much for giggles, a copy of Ivan Turgenev&#8217;s &#8220;First Love,&#8221; a 76,000-word novella published in 1860 (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Love_%28novella%29">I didn&#8217;t know, either</a>).</li>
<li>Some apps let you read their magazine in horizontal and vertical modes, while <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100920/sports-illustrated-tells-ipad-readers-to-turn-around/">Time Warner&#8217;s (TWX) Sports Illustrated only works in horizontal mode</a> (for now). But Esquire only works in vertical mode, and that feels just fine.</li>
</ul>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Though it&#8217;s just five months old, Apple&#8217;s iPad is a certifiable hit, having already sold millions of units and spawning tens of thousands of apps tailored for its 10-inch screen. The tablet has prompted many of its owners to use it instead of their laptops for everything from email and social networking to games and Web surfing.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also a very good e-reader, in my view. </p>

<p>Unlike dedicated e-reader devices like Amazon&#8217;s Kindle, the iPad offers a wide selection of e-reading apps, and I have used several of them heavily to devour scores of books. In particular, I have spent the past few weeks testing the best known of these iPad e-reader apps, comparing their strengths and weaknesses.</p>
<p>My verdict is that none of the three apps I focused on—which mimic and often interact with dedicated e-readers like the Kindle device—towers over the others. Each has its good and bad points, and I personally switch among them.</p>
<p>First, let me note that this isn&#8217;t a comparison of the iPad and the dedicated e-readers. It is about software readers on the iPad itself. Some folks will prefer the focused e-reader hardware, such as Amazon&#8217;s Kindle, Sony&#8217;s (SNE) Reader and Barnes &#038; Noble&#8217;s Nook. The latter devices cost much less—the base Kindle is now $139 versus the iPad&#8217;s $499 starting price. They also have longer battery life and are much lighter. But others—including me—prefer the iPad&#8217;s big, bright, backlit color screen to the smaller, gray screens of the dedicated e-readers, and the fact that they can pause periodically in their reading to do so many other things on the iPad without reaching for a laptop.</p>
<p>For this review, I compared Apple&#8217;s own fledgling e-reader software and store, called iBooks; Amazon&#8217;s Kindle iPad app; and the newly revamped Barnes &#038; Noble iPad app, called Nook. </p>

<p>Overall, they are more similar than different. Each is free and operates much like the pioneering Kindle device, offering access to an online library of books you already own and an online store to buy more. Each remembers where you left off in your books, and includes built-in search, dictionaries and the ability to enter notes and to highlight text. All also offer the option to search for more information on terms in your books, using Google or Wikipedia.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s iBooks app visually is the slickest of the three. Its library screen looks like a wooden bookcase, and when you turn a page, it curves like a paper page and even shows the text on the other side bleeding through. When you hold the iPad horizontally, iBooks switches to a two-page view with a rounded rise in the middle, like a paper book&#8217;s binding. The iBooks app is the only one of the three to offer a built-in bookstore, while the Amazon (AMZN) and Nook apps require you to jump into the Web browser on the iPad to shop. This is because Apple charges third-party app developers 30% to make in-app purchases, a price Amazon and Barnes &#038; Noble (BKS) prefer not to pay. This may be an unfair advantage for Apple, but it&#8217;s convenient for users.</p>
<p>The iBooks app also can handle personal PDF files, synced to the app via iTunes on your computer. Neither of the other two apps offer PDFs on the iPad, though Amazon and Barnes &#038; Noble say they&#8217;re working on it. Also, Apple (AAPL) has harnessed the iPad&#8217;s accessibility features to allow its e-books to be read aloud, something I couldn&#8217;t make happen in the other two apps.</p>
<p>But iBooks has some big downsides. The most important is that, being only five months old, it has a smaller catalog than its rivals—just 130,000 titles, versus around 700,000 for the Kindle app and about one million for the Nook app.  For instance, the popular Swedish mystery series by Stieg Larsson is absent from the iBooks catalog. And iBooks doesn&#8217;t offer any periodicals.</p>
<p>Amazon&#8217;s Kindle app has the biggest catalog of commercial, copyrighted, in-print books—about 655,000 titles. The Nook catalog of a million books is larger overall, but about half consists of out-of-print books. The Kindle app also instantly displays the dictionary definition of any word you highlight. The others require you to press a dictionary icon to look up a word. And, like iBooks, it was fast at opening books.</p>
<p>The Kindle app also lets you see popular highlighted passages selected by other users, and it synchronizes the last page read, your bookmarks and notes with the Kindle hardware reader and Kindle apps on Windows PCs, Macs, and BlackBerry and Android devices. iBooks only syncs these things to the iBooks app on other Apple hand-held devices, the iPhone and iPod Touch. The Kindle app also can be set to turn pages with the same curved effect as iBooks (but without the text-bleeding effect) and it has a two-page view in horizontal mode.</p>
<p>The Kindle app also lacks periodicals, though Amazon says it&#8217;s working on this. And the Kindle app, like the Kindle hardware, doesn&#8217;t use real page numbers, relying on confusing &#8220;location&#8221; numbers. The others use page numbers. Also, some books appeared in the Kindle app in scanned, hard to read typefaces, while the same books on the others appeared in more readable type.</p>

<p>The Nook iPad app, like the Nook hardware device, has a big plus: It lets you lend and borrow some titles to and from other Nook users for two weeks. It&#8217;s also the only one of the three to offer periodicals, though not all are available. For instance, The Wall Street Journal and the Boston Globe can&#8217;t be downloaded, though the New York Times can.</p>
<p>The Nook also offers more visual effects than the others, including color themes for background and text colors. Also, like the Kindle app, it syncs with Nook apps on numerous other devices, though, curiously, not yet with the Nook hardware device.</p>
<p>But I found more limitations and flaws in the Nook app&#8217;s basic book functions. For many words, the app lacked dictionary entries the others had, and books loaded more slowly. Also, one book I downloaded on the Nook app had the first few pages missing and another turned out to be a different book from its title. Also, its horizontal view didn&#8217;t work for all the titles I tested.</p>
<p>In my tests, book prices seemed roughly similar on all three apps, though some books may cost less on one or another. For instance, Jonathan Franzen&#8217;s new book &#8220;Freedom,&#8221; is $12.99 on each; David McCullough&#8217;s classic &#8220;1776&#8243; costs $13.99 on each; and Laurie King&#8217;s &#8220;The Beekeeper&#8217;s Apprentice&#8221; is $9.99 on all three. Amazon says 574,000 of its 700,000 e-books are $9.99 or less. Barnes &#038; Noble says the &#8220;vast majority&#8221; of its commercial e-books are $9.99 or less. And Apple says 75% of its paid books are $9.99 or less and 25% of its paid books are less than $4.99.</p>
<p>Overall, each of the three iPad apps makes the device a fine way to read e-books. Multiple apps and stores—including many not covered here—allow choices absent from dedicated reading devices.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It takes a lot to organize a classroom of 20 children. It can take even more to organize the kids&#8217; busy parents—and that often means turning to technology to get everyone on the same page.</p>
<p>Over the past nine months, my first-grader&#8217;s school has seen that in spades. Like many elementary schools, ours relies on parent volunteers to help out with one-on-one reading with students and math exercises. In my 6-year-old&#8217;s class, at least two parent volunteers are needed a day. In the past, volunteers were organized the old-fashioned way on paper, with parents signing up for their preferred time slots for the month on a calendar sent home with their children.</p>
<p>But in recent years as more schools and families have gone digital, parents are opting for an online solution to organizing volunteer class time. And a host of volunteering and calendar services have popped up on the Web to oblige them. When I asked our school&#8217;s room parent which online sites people were using to organize volunteering, he blasted out an email to poll his network of room parents. The informal survey yielded one conclusion: Each classroom was using different services, each with their own perks and drawbacks. Among the hodge-podge of choices were well-known applications such as Yahoo Inc.&#8217;s <a href="http://groups.yahoo.com/">Yahoo Groups</a> and Google Inc.&#8217;s Calendar, as well as less familiar names including <a href="http:/www.volunteerspot.com">VolunteerSpot</a> Inc.&#8217;s VolunteerSpot and Doodle AG&#8217;s <a href="http://Doodle.com">Doodle.com</a>.</p>
<p>All are easily accessible on the Web and are free (though some charge a fee for premium users). All allow a central organizer to set up a master calendar or group online and invite other people to join, thereby getting everyone onto the same technological platform.</p>

<p>Each also has limitations. Some make it difficult to print a volunteer schedule. Others don&#8217;t have automatic reminders to notify a participant that their volunteer session is coming up, or they make it tough to export the calendar to be integrated with, say, your calendar at work.</p>
<p>Of all the technologies our school&#8217;s parents are using, Yahoo&#8217;s Groups has been around the longest. Launched in 1999, Yahoo says it now hosts more than 10 million groups that are accessed by some 120 million members. Signing up to create a Yahoo Group is a breeze—with a few clicks, people can name a group and invite others to join. Once set up, parents can post comments, send photos and other attachments to the group, and sign up for spots with an integrated calendar application. Over the years, Yahoo has added new features, including tools to help build an event and to gather RSVPs. </p>
<p>But some parents complain that using a Yahoo Group creates unnecessary spam when some people forget they&#8217;re communicating with a group instead of one on one. In addition, Groups&#8217; calendar application is difficult to import and export. Yahoo says that later this year, it will roll out a refresh of Groups that will &#8220;enable smaller groups to do things more efficiently.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google Calendar, launched in 2007, got a fresh new look for the application last month.  The application is also easy to create and to invite people to join. Other parents can share the calendar, see at a glance what volunteer spots are available and fill in the ones they want. Reminders are built in, and Google Calendar can sync with Microsoft Outlook or other calendaring systems.</p>
<p>One of our school&#8217;s first-grade classes, though, faced a hurdle when it came to joining their Google Calendar. Some parents said they couldn&#8217;t join because they didn&#8217;t have a Gmail email account and didn&#8217;t want to jump through the hoops of creating one. Google says people don&#8217;t have to have a Gmail account but adds there is often confusion between a Gmail account and a plain-vanilla Google account, which only requires people to enter a username and password.</p>
<p>No such puzzlement should exist with Doodle.com, which doesn&#8217;t ask users for their email. Launched in 2003 by a developer in Zurich, Doodle.com allows people to quickly get on a calendar, select dates and times for an event, then send out the link so people can fill in when they want to volunteer. But Doodle.com is designed primarily for setting up a business meeting, the company says. Organizing a month&#8217;s worth of classroom volunteers thus requires clicking each specific date to create a volunteer spot for it. In other services, you can bring up a month&#8217;s calendar. Printing out a Doodle.com calendar also entails someone first exporting the calendar to a PDF or an Excel spreadsheet.</p>
<p>One parent, who is a Doodle.com fan, says she finds the application is better used to organize one-off events such as a school field trip rather than maintaining an ongoing volunteer calendar.</p>
<p>VolunteerSpot was launched early last year by entrepreneur Karen Bantuveris, who says she was aggravated with the lack of tools to solve volunteer-coordinating problems at her child&#8217;s preschool. VolunteerSpot allows an organizer to create a calendar, use a tool called the planning wizard to choose tasks they need people to volunteer for, and then send the link out so people can chime in for what slots they can fill.</p>
<p>VolunteerSpot has gotten mixed reviews from our first-grade class. While our parent-volunteer coordinator said the website is very &#8220;usable&#8221;—with reminders automatically sent two days before a volunteer session, among other things—it was less smooth in some areas. </p>
<p>VolunteerSpot doesn&#8217;t allow people to see a month&#8217;s worth of volunteers at a glance; people have to click on each day to see who is volunteering, for instance. Printing a calendar isn&#8217;t easy. When I clicked on our class calendar, I could print out only my volunteer slots and not the entire class&#8217;s since I wasn&#8217;t the calendar&#8217;s administrator. </p>
<p>My first-grader&#8217;s teacher was particularly frustrated by those things since they prevented her from easily seeing who was volunteering when and from printing out a calendar to prompt laggards to volunteer. She says it meant she often had to bug our parent-volunteer coordinator for updates and to make changes to the calendar.</p>
<p>Ms. Bantuveris says the site is constantly adding features and that more than one person can be a calendar&#8217;s administrator, which allows them to make changes to a calendar&#8217;s settings. She adds that the site in February added an option allowing an administrator print out a master calendar.</p>
<p>Still, there&#8217;s one thing these technologies can&#8217;t overcome: parental resistance. One of our school&#8217;s first-grade classes started the academic year with VolunteerSpot—but quickly abandoned it. Instead, they switched to a paper calendar. &#8220;We just couldn&#8217;t get anyone to sign up online,&#8221; says the room parent for that class. With a paper calendar, she adds, the volunteering has gone much more smoothly. </p>

<p>The clamshell device resembles Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) recently abandoned Courier project with a pair of touchscreens that open and shut like a book. Details have been sparse from the company, but we do know that it will offer an online store linked to the device for purchase of materials. Kno shares a co-founder with Chegg, the online textbook rental service, and early partnerships with Cengage Learning (CHC-WT), McGraw Hill (MHP) and Pearson and Wiley indicate that the device will include access to both textbook-style and reference-database content.</p>

<p><strong>11:13 am</strong>: The Kno co-founders, Osman Rashid and Babur Habib, take the stage to showcase the Kno. They say 90 people have been working for a year on the Kno.</p>
<p>They say their hope for the Kno is to change the way students learn.</p>
<p><strong>11:15 am</strong>: The founders are unpacking what they are calling a &#8220;typical backpack.&#8221; Their example has two to four textbooks.</p>
<p>They say students have asked to replicate the analog experience of the book.</p>

<p>On Thursday, Adobe co-founders and co-chairmen Chuck Geschke and John Warnock <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100513/adobe-to-apple-you-wanna-hug-it-out/">followed suit with some thoughts of their own</a>. Their eight-paragraph essay, <a href="http://www.adobe.com/choice/openmarkets.html">&#8220;Our Thoughts On Open Markets,&#8221;</a> mentions Apple only once, but when it does, it is to lambaste the company for its position on Flash, a position the two claim &#8220;could undermine this next chapter of the web&#8211;the chapter in which mobile devices outnumber computers, any individual can be a publisher, and content is accessed anywhere and at any time.&#8221;</p>
<p>I spoke to Geschke Thursday afternoon about the pair&#8217;s letter, Adobe’s (ADBE) new &#8220;We ? Apple&#8221; ad campaign and Apple’s (AAPL) stance on his company’s software. Below, a transcript of our conversation.</p>
<p><strong>John Paczkowski:</strong> What is Adobe is hoping to get out of this new &#8220;We Love Apple/Freedom of Choice&#8221; campaign?</p>
<p><strong>Chuck Geschke:</strong> We mostly are using it as a way to communicate with our customers and partners to assure them that we’re not going to change our strategy and to inform the rest of the community of what the pluses and minuses are of not supporting Flash on the iPhone and the iPad. Our customers, a large percentage of them, are the people who generate and distribute information and content, and for them they have one production stream that they use to do that and they’ve gotten used to the fact that we’ve worked very hard to open up the standards that we support so that we can offer them ubiquity of output on all kinds of platforms. So the fact that Apple is precluding that puts them in a tough position because it means that they’re going to have to create that content twice, and that’s not very productive. It’s certainly more expensive than what they do today. And as you know, the content industry is an industry under a lot of cost pressure these days.</p>
<p><strong>JP:</strong> Both Apple and Microsoft have said publicly now that Flash has issues with reliability, security, and performance. Do you think those complaints are legitimate?</p>
<p><strong>CG:</strong> I think they’re old news. <a href="http://www.adobe.com/choice/flash.html">Go to our Web site and read the actual facts about Flash</a>. We enumerate the facts about Flash there as we see them. [Microsoft and Apple] may have a different set of facts that they believe are accurate. It’s up to you to decide. But I will tell you that the Flash version we’re coming out with now&#8211;where, for the first time with the Mac platform, we can actually get to the lower-level interfaces&#8211;is going to run like the wind. And the same is true on Windows.</p>
<p><strong>JP:</strong> Shouldn’t Apple have the right to define the means by which apps for its own platform can be written?</p>
<p><strong>CG:</strong> They absolutely have the right. No one says they don’t.</p>
<p><strong>JP:</strong> Cross-platform mobile apps tend not to take advantage of native features unique to each device. What do you have to say about complaints that write-once-run-anywhere software results in subpar apps?</p>
<p><strong>CG:</strong> Well, people don’t say that about Photoshop. They certainly don’t say it about Acrobat&#8230;.I’m a little confused about what the real examples of that are. If there’s a problem with the performance of Flash as demonstrated on the iPhone, it’s because we haven’t been able to access the inner layers of hardware and software we need to to provide the kind of performance we can provide on other platforms. But that’s Apple’s choice, not ours. And now, of course, you can’t use it at all.</p>
<p><strong> JP: </strong>So you don’t think write-once-run-anywhere is limiting at all?</p>
<p><strong> CG:</strong> Not really. I mean there may be certain features in certain environments that you’ll want to do customization for, but the more you go down that road, the more you get the experience of HTML on the Web, where the kind of browser, hardware and OS you use determines what your experience. That’s because HTML is not well codified and standardized and people sort of roll their own.</p>
<p><strong>JP:</strong> How much of Adobe’s revenue comes from Flash?</p>
<p><strong>CG:</strong> I would share that number if we disclose it, but I’m not sure that we do. It isn’t a huge amount of revenue, but it is an extremely popular platform that all of our apps have the opportunity to exploit when it’s distributed everywhere. Flash tools aren’t the largest piece of our business, but it’s a significant one and obviously we feel it’s extremely important to our customers and partners who want to build third-party apps in an environment where they can, in fact, put them on a variety of devices without having to re-implement them.</p>
<p><strong>JP:</strong> So could Apple’s exclusion of Flash hurt Adobe sales?</p>
<p><strong>CG:</strong> I don’t think it will have a significant effect. As well as Apple is doing, if you look at the number of platforms out in the market and the number of release of new ones that will occur over the next six to 12 months, it’s going to be huge. That’s a much bigger population, and we’re just focusing on making our technology operate as effectively and efficiently as possible for it.<br />

<p><strong>JP:</strong> In his &#8220;Thoughts on Flash&#8221; essay, Jobs accused Adobe of abandoning Apple. &#8220;Apple went through its near death experience, and Adobe was drawn to the corporate market with their Acrobat products,&#8221; he wrote. Is Job’s implication here a fair one?</p>
<p><strong>CG:</strong> We never abandoned Apple. Apple now seems to be abandoning at least one aspect of our product line right now. No, we never abandoned them. We’ve always ported our apps simultaneously to both platforms. There have been times when Apple has changed its strategy on hardware or on operating systems that didn’t meet our product cycle, so there have been periods of maybe six months where we didn’t keep up with their latest release. But that’s our own business model; we can only afford to re-implement our products at a certain rate. </p>
<p>We have never, ever abandoned Apple and we don’t want to abandon them today. Everything you read in our new ad is true. I myself own probably between 8 and 10 Macintoshes &#8212; both laptops and work stations. I don’t buy PCs, I buy Macs.</p>
<p><strong>JP:</strong> Why isn&#8217;t Flash an open standard?</p>
<p><strong>CG:</strong> It is. What are you talking about?</p>
<p><strong>JP:</strong> Flash is proprietary to Adobe. It’s not Open Source. Let me rephrase: Why isn&#8217;t Flash an open standard overseen by an open-standards body?</p>
<p><strong>CG:</strong> As soon as Adobe acquired Macromedia, we openly published the SWF format and removed the requirement that you have a license to use it&#8230;.No, we haven’t put Flash out to a standards body yet as we have with PDF and Postscript. But I wouldn’t be shocked if we do someday when it makes sense.</p>
<p>With the standards that we have built and made open to the entire world, we’ve tried our best to get them to the point where they’re mature enough so that we’re not doing design by committee. If you look at the amount of time it will take HTML5 to become a reasonably solid platform, it’s going to take a long time because there are an awful lot of vested interests trying to influence its development.</p>
<p><strong>JP:</strong> Any thoughts on Steve Jobs’s claim that &#8220;Flash was created during the PC era&#8211;for PCs and mice&#8221;?</p>
<p><strong>CG:</strong> What do you think an iPhone is? It’s a personal computer.</p>
<p><strong> JP:</strong> One last question. What do you think of the iPad?</p>
<p><strong>CG:</strong> I think it’s a neat thing. I personally have no particular interest in it; I’d much rather have a general-purpose computer. I think there’s definitely a market for that kind of product. We certainly know a lot of people that want to produce content for it and a large percentage of them are disappointed that they’re going to have to do that separately from the way they produce content for all the other devices they support.</p>

<p>The television hit, &#8220;Glee,&#8221; is one of News Corp.&#8217;s crown jewels of late, while its MySpace social networking site has struggled painfully to regain its once-hot momentum.</p>
<p>Now MySpace is getting the benefit of the heat &#8220;Glee&#8221; is generating, by hosting the online auditions for the Fox television network show, which returns tonight after a short hiatus.</p>
<p>&#8220;Glee&#8221;&#8211;an online phenom in its own right, with more than four million song downloads so far&#8211;is probably a good partner for MySpace as it tries to differentiate itself as a place where users can express their musical and entertainment passions.</p>
<p>This <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100310/video-back-to-the-future-at-myspace-or-just-another-retread/">&#8220;discover and be discovered&#8221; concept</a> is all part of a very slow-moving effort to turn MySpace into a socially-charged entertainment hub.</p>
<p>That effort will get a splashy rollout today with the first animated takeover of MySpace users&#8217; personal homepages to coincide with the return of &#8220;Glee&#8221; (you can see it in action in the PDF below).</p>
<p>In the branded campaign, the character of Rachel (played by Lea Michele) becomes the profile picture, and evil cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (played by Jane Lynch) pops out to shout a tune-in message about the show&#8217;s premiere, while blowing parts of the page away.</p>
<p>The bigger deal, of course, is the <a href="http://www.myspace.com/gleeauditions">online casting call</a> for &#8220;Gleeks,&#8221; as the show&#8217;s rabid fans are called, which MySpace is also hosting.</p>
<p>Professional and amateur performers between the ages of 16 and 26 can submit video auditions for the chance to have a re-occurring role on the show&#8217;s second season, choosing from songs featured in &#8220;Glee&#8221; and using the MySpace Karaoke tool.</p>
<p>Since it was launched March 30, the page has over a million friends and thousands of video submissions, which will be voted on. The casting call ends April 26.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a video interview of the effort that I did last week at the tony Chateau Marmont hotel with MySpace Music&#8217;s Courtney Holt, who worked on the deal, as well as a special guest star you might recognize.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The tech industry and media are focused on Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) forthcoming iPad tablet computer, a multifunction device that includes an e-book reader. Meanwhile, with much less fanfare, other companies are pressing ahead with conventional, dedicated e-readers aimed at the leader in the category: Amazon&#8217;s Kindle.</p>

<p>These more focused, monochrome devices aren&#8217;t as flashy or as versatile as the iPad, which handles everything from email to games. But they cost less and are aimed wholly at people who seek to read books and periodicals in digital form.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing one such new e-reader from a company that has been in the business for years, but is mainly known in Europe. It is called the Irex DR800SG and costs $400 at bestbuy.com (BBY)—about $140 more than the Kindle. While the DR800SG uses the same electronic ink screen technology as the Kindle, it has some major differences: in screen size, in user interface, and in the way it wirelessly downloads books and newspapers.</p>
<p>The Irex is shorter but wider than the Kindle, and has an 8.1-inch screen, versus the Kindle&#8217;s 6-inch screen. It&#8217;s slightly thicker than the Kindle, but about 25% heavier. It has a single, thin page-turning and menu button on the left side, while the Kindle has larger, multiple buttons on both sides. Both devices claim to hold about 1,500 books.</p>
<p>Irex, a Los Angeles-based company whose products are engineered in the Netherlands, produced its first e-reader in 2004, but this new model is its first aimed specifically at the American market and its first to use the cellular 3G network for downloading content.</p>

<p>The new Irex has some advantages over the Kindle. Its larger screen makes for a better reading experience, allowing many more words to show on the page, at similar font sizes. The screen also seems slightly sharper.</p>
<p>The Irex looks sleeker than the Kindle, because it has a much thinner bezel around the screen, due mainly to the lack of a physical keyboard. It also does a better job of organizing your reading material, grouping items into separate folders for books, newspapers, and personal documents.</p>
<p>And, instead of being linked to a single online store, like Amazon (AMZN), it uses a &#8220;mall&#8221; concept, designed to allow users to choose from many different online stores, though only two are available now. The principal merchant in the mall so far is the Barnes &#038; Noble e-book store—the same one used on the Barnes &#038; Noble (BKS) Nook e-reader—which claims about a million titles. The other store is called NewspaperDirect, which claims over 1,000 newspapers.</p>
<p>However, in my tests, I found the Irex much clumsier to use than the Kindle and, because of that, I still prefer the Amazon device. For instance, the Irex requires a stylus—an ancient and fading navigation device—for some operations. Yet it lacks a holder for this pointer except in the leather cover, so the stylus is easy to lose. The Irex also lacks a Home button, a note-taking function, any way to highlight text and a built-in dictionary.</p>
<p>More important, I found the mall concept for downloading books to be frustrating. Because the Irex isn&#8217;t seamlessly linked to its own online store, I had to establish, or sign into, four different accounts to test the device fully. Even after that, each Barnes &#038; Noble download required multiple steps. On the Kindle, ordering books is a breeze, and they appear almost instantly after you click a single &#8220;Buy&#8221; button.</p>
<p>This last issue is a trade-off between greater choice and simpler, quicker functionality. Some readers will be willing to make that trade-off, especially if Irex is able to add specialized stores in the future that offer, say, a large selection of non-English-language books. But, for most Americans with typical book needs, I find the current trade-off unacceptable.</p>
<p>For example, books I bought from Barnes &#038; Noble appeared slowly on the Irex. The device seemed to have to turn on its radio and establish a new connection each time. Also, until I opened each book, they appeared on the screen identified only by a geeky file name. And, after I opened each, there was a long delay while the device did something called &#8220;counting pages.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company says that some of these shortcomings will be fixed in a software update due as soon as next month. It promises there will be a note-taking function, speedier wireless connections and the elimination of the counting-pages delay. It also says it is working on a universal log-in system for its mall of stores. But highlighting and a dictionary are only being &#8220;considered&#8221; for a future revision.</p>
<p>On the bright side, I was able to easily plug the Irex into a PC and Mac, and manually drag onto it personal PDF files, pictures and even a free book I bought at a Web site.</p>
<p>Irex says it is working on a color model for next year. I hope it works more smoothly than the DR800SG.</p>

The cloud is a hip way of describing Web-accessible storage, and whether people know it or not, they&#8217;re using this more each day. Social networks save account information in the cloud. Photo-sharing sites store images in the cloud. Web-based email programs keep messages in the cloud. People also are starting to back up the contents of their computers to the cloud, which makes files accessible from almost anywhere using an Internet connection.</p>

<p>Not everyone is gung-ho about storing personal data somewhere other than on their own PC. They might wonder who else can access the cloud&#8217;s contents and if the cloud is a truly reliable option for storage. </p>
<p>This week I tested Pogoplug (<a href="http://pogoplug.com/">pogoplug.com</a>), a $129 solution that lets people back up their digital files and access them via a Web browser, or mobile devices. It streams content through the cloud (Pogoplug servers), but never actually stores anything in the cloud. People keep their content on their own  hard drive—the Pogoplug lets them access it elsewhere via the cloud. </p>
<p>For the most part, Pogoplug works like a charm. One downside is that files can be a bit slower to open from remote computers or mobile devices than on computers within the same network as the Pogoplug. But its single best attribute is its ability to do the job without trying to tell you every smart thing it&#8217;s doing in the background. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Unique Model</h5>
<p>Pogoplug comes from San Francisco-based Cloud Engines Inc. and its business model is unlike other cloud-storage solutions. Pogoplug users pay upfront for the device and a hard drive of their choice, which is the storage device, and they never pay again. Other services store content in the cloud, making for faster remote access to files. But these services charge users monthly or annually for storage. ZumoDrive offers 2 gigabytes of storage free but charges annual fees ranging from $30 for 10 gigabytes to $800 for 500 gigabytes. SugarSync, a cloud-based synching program, also offers a free 2-gigabyte program, but charges from $50 to $250 a year for 30 to 250 gigabytes.</p>

<p>Cloud Engines sent me a hard drive for my testing: Seagate&#8217;s (STX) FreeAgent Go with 250 gigabytes of storage. This little rectangle costs $90 on <a href="http://www.seagate.com">Seagate.com</a> or $69 on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/">Amazon.com</a> (AMZN), bringing my Pogoplug set-up total to $200. This is $180 less than just one year of ZumoDrive&#8217;s 200-gigabyte plan, or $50 less than SugarSync&#8217;s one-year, 250-gigabyte plan.</p>
<p>The Pogoplug is a white box with an electric pink strip running down one side and its underbelly. Three cables attach to it and run out to the wall socket, a router and whatever storage you choose (a hard drive or a small thumb drive). Each Pogoplug has four USB ports, allowing four hard drives or several USB hubs with additional USB ports to connect to the gadget at once.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">A Mini Computer</h5>
<p>The Pogoplug runs as a mini computer with its own processor that sends files out to the cloud for streaming whenever you want to see them. It creates thumbnails of photos and organizes media, making it easier to find on the <a href="http://my.pogoplug.com/">my.pogoplug.com</a> Web site. And Pogoplug also uses advanced networking to create a secure connection so people with firewalls and extra secure network settings can leave them just as they are. </p>
<p>Setting up Pogoplug is as simple as plugging in its three cords and pairing it with a computer. I shared with the Pogoplug at least 100 files from a Windows 7 PC and a MacBook Pro. I also set sharing to synchronize with Pogoplug whenever new files were added to designated files on my computers. All of this content was stored on the Seagate hard drive and neatly displayed on <a href="http://my.pogoplug.com/">my.pogoplug.com</a>. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Hunting for Files</h5>
<p>This Web site looks sort of like a bare-bones version of iTunes. Three sections on the left—My Media; Show My Files (sorted into today, last week, last month, those I shared and those shared with me); and My Library—opened content in a large panel. Options at the bottom of the screen changed the way this content was displayed, and a search box enabled hunting through all types of files for specific words. I tried &#8220;snow&#8221; and found many results, thanks to photos taken of the recent storms in Washington, D.C. </p>
<p>Each file saved to Pogoplug is represented by a thumbnail image on the Web site and can be downloaded, shared or previewed by you or others with whom you share. Videos are, by default, shortened to 10-second previews, but an option in settings allows videos to always show in their full formats. An Upload button at the bottom lets people share content from whatever computer they are using to Pogoplug, and a Sharing button sends files to friends via email or social-networking sites including Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. Options let people set sharing so Pogoplug constantly updates friends whenever new data is added, like new photos added to an album.</p>
<p>Both Macs and PCs worked for me while I tested accessing Pogoplug on the three main browsers that run on both machines: Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox, Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Chrome and Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) Safari. Internet Explorer worked on Windows. I simply opened <a href="http://my.pogoplug.com/">my.pogoplug.com</a>, entered my username and password, and I could see all the files on the Seagate hard drive. A desktop app for the Mac or PC treats Pogoplug as a local drive, making it easy to drag and drop media to it.</p>
<p>Most common files types can be stored, accessed and shared through the Pogoplug. I tested sharing movies, music, photos, Microsoft Word documents, PDFs and others. These digital files can reside solely on the hard drives plugged into the Pogoplug. Computers in the same network opened files faster than computers or smart phones working in other places, but the wait wasn&#8217;t unbearable. </p>
<p>I also used a free Pogoplug app on the iPhone and Palm (PALM) Pre, and the interface was just as simple as the <a href="http://my.pogoplug.com/">my.pogoplug.com</a> site. A Pogoplug app also exists in the Android Market app store for Android phones, but the app for BlackBerry isn&#8217;t yet in RIM&#8217;s (RIMM) App Catalog and must be installed via the Desktop Manager. Even without an app, I used the iPhone browser to open shared files sent to me in emails, and had no trouble viewing images or listening to songs. </p>
<p>Pogoplug is a terrifically simple way to back up files and make them accessible from afar or on the go. Starting in March, Pogoplug will be capable of synchronizing and backing up content through the cloud service with other Pogoplugs located elsewhere. For instance, you can keep Pogoplug at home and one at the office and have a backup to your backup device.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s often said that less is more. If only this were true for computer devices like printers and scanners, which take up a lot of desktop real estate. The reality is that small, stylish, portable versions of these gadgets are often pricey and not as functional. </p>

<p>This week, I reviewed two products that unfortunately live up to that reality: a portable printer and mini scanner that put a premium on good looks at $300 each. I&#8217;ve been using Fujitsu&#8217;s newest $295 mini scanner, the ScanSnap S1300 (<a href="http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computing/peripherals/scanners/scansnap/s1300.html">fujitsu.com</a>), and PlanOn System Solutions Inc.&#8217;s tiny $300 PrintStik PS905ME (<a href="http://3.ly/6QVS">http://3.ly/6QVS</a>). There are several good printers, scanners or all-in-ones that cost significantly less or offer more functionality than these devices. </p>
<p>But boy, do these gadgets look good. The Fujitsu ScanSnap collapses down to a small, rectangular box with mirrored buttons. The PlanOn PrintStik resembles a box of aluminum foil in the kitchen drawer&#8211;except more compact. </p>
<p>Both devices are small and lightweight enough to fit in a bag or briefcase, if necessary. Either one of these could be ported around without a problem: The PrintStik weighs 1.5 pounds and the ScanSnap weighs twice as much at 3.08 pounds. Both fit well in a tiny work space or on the desktops of people like me, who don&#8217;t print or scan much and don&#8217;t want a device taking up a lot of space. </p>
<p>As is usually the case with smaller devices that lack display screens and extra buttons, one hopes they come with straightforward software or simply plug in and play. The Fujitsu ScanSnap meets that requirement with software that installs on Macs or PCs and can be used without reading complicated instructions.</p>

<p>The PlanOn PrintStik worked adequately as a basic black-and-white printer for Windows PCs (it isn&#8217;t Mac compatible), but fell short as a wireless printer for smart phones. The PrintStik is meant to receive and print documents sent to it via Bluetooth from BlackBerrys, but I found the BlackBerry program to be clumsy and in the end, it didn&#8217;t even work despite at least two dozen attempts. PlanOn&#8217;s tech support said they thought my PrintStik&#8217;s Bluetooth could be faulty, but couldn&#8217;t send me a new device in time for this column.</p>
<p>These two devices offer some interesting design elements. The PlanOn PrintStik PS905ME uses thermal printing&#8211;an old technology that has been around for decades&#8211;rather than ink cartridges, to produce images and characters by applying heat at tiny points. </p>
<p>The PrintStik&#8217;s thermal printing only works with special scrolls of thin, slippery paper. It comes in packs of six rolls for $23; one roll is about 23 feet long and prints roughly 30 sheets of letter-size paper. You can opt to print only as much as a document requires to save paper. But a long document prints out in one continuous scroll rather than separate pages. </p>
<p>The PrintStik has a rechargeable battery that lasts long enough to print about 30 pages; a wall charger is also included. It can churn out up to three pages per minute. I can imagine tossing this printer into my suitcase for business trips; it would also come in handy for printing boarding passes for use at the airport, among other things.</p>
<p>Documents that are supposed to be printable from the BlackBerry with a remote-printing app include Web pages, attachments including PDFs, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, JPEGs, and PowerPoint presentations. PlanOn representatives say an app will be available for Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android phones in about four or five months; they also are working on an iPad application. Though the PrintStik&#8217;s remote-printing app for the BlackBerry is currently free, the company intends to begin charging $30 annually for its remote-printing service this summer. </p>
<p>Fujitsu&#8217;s ScanSnap S1300 can suck in 10 pages at once, and has two cameras that can scan the front and back of printouts. This process can scan as many as eight dual-sided pages a minute. Item sizes range from 2&#215;2-inch cards to legal documents. </p>
<p>The ScanSnap comes with a wall charger but also runs without being plugged into the wall: It uses a USB cord for charging from a PC in addition to the USB cord that transfers data between the scanner and computer.</p>
<p>Seconds after I scanned documents into the ScanSnap, colorful icons appeared on my computer screen. Choosing one of these icons let me send the documents to one of the following: email, Word, a printer, Excel, iPhoto or Cardiris&#8211;a program that exports contact information from scanned business cards into Address Book or Entourage; CardMinder on Windows exports contact information to Outlook and other programs.</p>
<p>If you want to scan old or precious documents, you may not like using the ScanSnap&#8217;s sucking method for scanning, in case a page gets stuck or damaged. For sensitive objects or page scanning, the best bet is to use a flatbed scanner or all-in-one (that prints, scans, and faxes) with a lift-up lid that scans items on a flat surface. </p>
<p>Though the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 and PlanOn PrintStik PS905ME aren&#8217;t the least expensive or the most functional devices of their kind, they&#8217;re easy to move around and take up minimal amounts of space. For some people, that may be well worth the higher cost. </p>

<p>&#8220;This is not the &#8216;GDrive,&#8217;&#8221; a Google (GOOG) spokesperson explained. &#8220;We&#8217;ve been continuing to expand on the types of files that can be uploaded to Docs. We started with documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Later we enabled upload, view and share of PDFs. This launch builds on internal work that we&#8217;ve been doing for some time.&#8221;</p>
<p>And indeed it does. Until yesterday, Google Docs was limited to office-type documents. Today, those limits are gone and you can upload any file you like as long as it’s not over 250 megabytes. The service will provide up to one gigabyte of free storage, with additional space costing 25 cents per gigabyte per year.  </p>
<p>How this is different from the following description of GDrive culled from a 2006 Google presentation for analysts escapes me.</p>

With infinite storage, we can house all user files, including: emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc). We already have efforts in this direction in terms of GDrive, GDS, Lighthouse, but all of them face bandwidth and storage constraints today. For example: Firefox team is working on server side stored state but they want to store only URLs rather than complete web pages for storage reasons. This theme will help us make the client less important (thin client, thick server model) which suits our strength vis-a-vis Microsoft and is also of great value.

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/01/que.JPG"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-14811" title="que" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/01/que-275x275.jpg" alt="que" width="275" height="275" /></a>After <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091018/plastic-logic-shows-off-a-quick-look-at-its-kindle-killer-meet-the-que/">promising to deliver</a> its take on Amazon&#8217;s Kindle for a couple of years, Plastic Logic is finally delivering: Here comes the <a href="http://que.com/">Que</a> proReader, which the company promises is &#8220;more than an eReader&#8221;&#8211;it&#8217;s a &#8220;paperless briefcase.&#8221;</p>
<p>So what does that mean?</p>
<p>At this point, Plastic Logic, which has raised more than <a href="http://www.plasticlogic.com/about/investors.php">$200 million from investors</a>, is well behind Amazon (AMZN), Sony (SNE) and even Barnes &amp; Noble (BKS). So the company is trying to distinguish the Que by positioning it as a &#8220;business&#8221; device. Which also means expensive: Plastic Logic is asking consumers to pay up to $800 for the initial versions.</p>
<p>The big idea: Not only can you read your books and newspapers on the device, which features a touchscreen and e-ink display, but you can work on Microsoft (MSFT) Word, Excel, etc., documents. Plastic Logic also promises &#8220;interoperability&#8221; with Research In Motion&#8217;s (RIM) BlackBerry, though it is a little vague about how this will work.</p>
<p>That is, the company is positioning the Que as something akin to a netbook that happens not to have a keyboard (this sounds <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100104/major-apple-product-announcement/">familiar</a>).</p>
<p>In CEO Richard Archuleta&#8217;s words: &#8220;The e-readers that you see today are great reading devices. They&#8217;re great for reading ebooks. They&#8217;re great for casual reading. But what about folks who <em>need</em> to read&#8221;&#8211;that is, grownups who need to get some work done?</p>
<p>The device is neither thinner nor lighter than competing e-readers, which for Plastic Logic was a conscious choice. It is, however, much more expensive: A <a href="http://buyque.barnesandnoble.com/Home-and-Gift/e/814311010036/">four-gigabyte version will go for $649</a> and an <a href="http://buyque.barnesandnoble.com/Home-and-Gift/e/814311010043/">8GB version will cost $799</a>.</p>
<p>Amazon&#8217;s Kindle goes for <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00154JDAI/?tag=googhydr-20&amp;hvadid=3973070651&amp;ref=pd_sl_55j7qytur2_b">$259</a>, as does Barnes &amp; Noble&#8217;s <a href="http://www.barnesandnoble.com/nook/">Nook</a>; Amazon&#8217;s larger DX device costs <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wireless-Reading-Display-Generation/dp/B0015TCML0">$489</a>. Sony&#8217;s &#8220;Daily Edition&#8221; reader sells for <a href="http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&amp;storeId=10151&amp;langId=-1&amp;XID=O:prs900bckit:dg_ggldf&amp;productId=8198552921666064650">$399</a>.</p>
<p>As previously announced, the Que will connect to an <a href="http://que.barnesandnoble.com/catalog/">electronic bookstore</a> run by Barnes and Noble. The more expensive version will feature a wireless connection provided by AT&amp;T (T). Plastic Logic says the devices will ship in mid-April.</p>
<p>Notably absent from a <a href="http://tweetphoto.com/8206656">long list of publications</a> that have agreed to provide versions for the reader: The New York Times (NYT). Also missing, at least right now: Condé Nast and Time Warner&#8217;s (TWX) Time Inc. News Corp.&#8217;s (NWS) Dow Jones unit is offering both Barron&#8217;s and The Wall Street Journal (Dow Jones owns this Web site).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p class="question">My daughter left for college and I am worried about her backing up her computer. Is there a backup service that is offsite and automatic? What about campusbackup.org?</p>
<p>I haven&#8217;t tested campusbackup.org, whose Student Backup service copies an unlimited quantity of word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation and PDF files, once nightly, to a remote server for $50 a year. But there are other, more versatile options I have tested that, unlike Student Backup, copy photos and music and other types of files. These include MozyHome ($4.95 a month for unlimited storage, at mozy.com) and Carbonite ($55 a year for unlimited storage at carbonite.com). All three work with either Windows or Mac computers.</p>
<p class="question">I read that importing the newly remastered Beatles CDs into iTunes and listening to them on a computer or portable player is like buying a masterpiece and staring at a photocopy of it. Any truth to this? Does importing really lose that much quality?</p>
<p>It depends on how sensitive an ear you have. In most cases, when you import a CD into iTunes or any other software jukebox program, you are converting the songs into a compressed file, such as an MP3 or AAC file. This saves a ton of space on your hard disk, but at least subtly diminishes quality. To an audiophile, that can make a big, negative difference, especially when you add the insult of listening to the music through iPod headphones or small computer speakers. To most of the rest of us, though—especially with rock, pop, urban or country music—it&#8217;s no big deal.</p>
<p>However, there is a compromise. If you don&#8217;t care about the songs taking up lots more space on your hard disk, iTunes will allow you to import them in a much less compressed format called Apple Lossless or an uncompressed format called WAV. You can choose which format to use in the iTunes Preferences settings. In the latest version of iTunes, called iTunes 9, this particular option is found under the General tab in Preferences, by clicking on the button called &#8220;Import Settings.&#8221;</p>
<p class="question">Previously I had a Dell and Windows and used Family Tree Maker for genealogy records. Now that I&#8217;m an Apple owner, I find that Family Tree Maker does not work on an Apple, only Windows. What can I do about this?</p>
<p>It seems to me that you have three obvious options. If you still have your old Dell, you could crank it up again just for the purpose of running Family Tree Maker. Or, you could buy a boxed copy of Windows and install it on your Mac, which is fully capable of running Windows and Windows programs (assuming it&#8217;s an Intel-based Mac). Finally, you could switch to one of the native Mac-based genealogy programs and import your data from Family Tree Maker via the standard GEDCOM file format used in genealogy. One such program, called Reunion, includes specific instructions on importing data from Family Tree Maker on its &#8220;Top 10 Questions&#8221; page, at leisterpro.com.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For many people, email is the main way they communicate with friends, co-workers and family members. It contains bills, class assignments, trip itineraries, photos and love notes. But as much as it gets used every day, the software that we utilize to read and sort our email isn&#8217;t as clever or time-saving as it could be.</p>
<p>This week I tested Postbox 1.0, a program designed to handle your email in a smart, helpful manner. Starting Wednesday, this program is available at <a href="http://www.postbox-inc.com/">www.Postbox-Inc.com</a>. Postbox sorts through your email and detects its contents so you can see Web links, photos, contacts and other items themselves with one button click—whether Microsoft Word (MSFT) documents, PDFs or spreadsheets—without digging through messages. Since its inbox is constantly being indexed, all search queries return near-instant results.</p>

<p>Postbox&#8217;s founders come from Mozilla Corp., maker of the popular Firefox browser, so Postbox is based on Mozilla technology and its security standards. Email is indexed locally on your computer, so none of it is sent back across the Web to Postbox. It uses Content Tabs (tabs are another feature borrowed from Firefox) to help visually organize folders, messages and content extracted from those messages. It displays the most important elements of each message in a right-side panel. Received emails can even be edited so they aren&#8217;t sitting in your inbox with subject lines like, &#8220;Fw: Re: Re: Sept.&#8221; Instead, you can rewrite the subject to something like &#8220;Flight times.&#8221;</p>
<p>But this program isn&#8217;t free like Gmail, Hotmail or other Web-based email programs, nor does it come preloaded on a computer the way Apple Mail (AAPL) is on every Mac. Users can try Postbox for a free 30-day trial period after which each license costs $40, allowing one person to use their license on multiple computers (i.e. at work, at home, on a laptop). For another $20, a Family Pack option will give up to five family members use of Postbox. An additional $25 buys a Lifetime Upgrades plan that entitles you to receive free of charge any major version of Postbox that&#8217;s released; other nonmajor releases are free upgrades.</p>
<p>I used Postbox on a Mac and a Windows Vista computer, filling it up with thousands of emails from Gmail, Hotmail and .Mac accounts. It didn&#8217;t run properly on my company-issued computer, which is plugged into a network firewall. Postbox says it supports open protocols like IMPAP, POP and SMTP, and that it would work with Microsoft Exchange if Exchange were set to use those open protocols.</p>
<p>For all of Postbox&#8217;s terrific features, it can be hard to suddenly see your email in a different way since most of our email programs haven&#8217;t changed much in years. Outlook, for example, has plenty of hidden features that many people never learn how to use. Postbox seems to know how slow users are to adapt to change and so it reveals many of its features whenever it gets the chance.</p>
<p>For example, Postbox pops up an alert that shows you how to connect this email program to Facebook and Twitter so that you can post status updates or tweets without leaving your email. These connections also let Postbox try to pull one representative photo for each of your email contacts by matching a name in an email with someone&#8217;s Facebook or Twitter name—if you follow the person. It also uses photos assigned to contacts in the Mac OS X address book, which is used by Apple Mail.</p>
<p>Or take a feature in Postbox called Topics. This is a way of auto-organizing messages into different groups after you label them as being part of a certain topic, say &#8220;Mom&#8217;s Birthday.&#8221; All messages in an email conversation are grouped into &#8220;Mom&#8217;s Birthday,&#8221; as are any future responses to the same conversation. Postbox gives you three ways to label an email conversation as being part of a certain topic: from the toolbar, using a Topics button in the message header or by pressing &#8220;T&#8221; from within a message. You can also select a topic as you&#8217;re composing an email, pre-sorting that conversation into a designated topic.</p>
<p>Not everyone will like Topics because, however helpful the feature is, it makes the user do more work when he or she just want to get through a huge pile of unread emails. Labeling each email with a certain topic doesn&#8217;t take long, but it&#8217;s still an extra step. I would like Postbox to create automatic topics for sorting emails. For example, I recently sent and received at least 50 emails related to rescheduling tennis matches. Even though all the messages had the word &#8220;tennis&#8221; in them, not all of them were related to the same email, so they wouldn&#8217;t sort into the topic I created, &#8220;Tennis Make-Up.&#8221; Postbox says it has considered automatic options like these and may try to incorporate something similar in future versions of the product.</p>
<p>If my 30-day trial ran out tomorrow, I&#8217;d miss Postbox&#8217;s Inspector Bar the most. This feature works like a filter, instantly sucking out the most important parts in each email—including messages, attachments, images or links—and displaying them in a blue, right-side panel.</p>
<p>Another useful tool in Postbox is the Compose Sidebar. This also appears as a right-side panel but it shows up when someone is writing an email. This panel can display attachments, images, links or contacts found in all emails so you can simply drag and drop that item into your email as you&#8217;re composing it. This took me a while to get comfortable using because I&#8217;m so used to hunting through emails for things that I need to find. But once it became a habit, I found myself using the Compose Sidebar often.</p>
<p>If you have Postbox running in the background and you get an email, small notifications appear in the bottom left of your screen telling you which email account received the message and who sent it.</p>
<p>In the Content Tabs, which fill up with all attachments, images, links or contacts found in your indexed email, a feature called the Action Bar lets you save, send, or instantly glance at a document. This saves you from opening each email and its attachment, a process that sometimes requires opening a slow-to-open program to see the document. A slider in this Action Bar lets you adjust the size of images from small to large.</p>
<p>Postbox shines a unique light on email and the way we work with it every day. Not all of its features will come naturally for long-time users of the same email program. But for someone who wants a fast search option built into email, Postbox is a winner.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For a company known for breakthrough products with cool features, Apple this week is doing something unusual: It is introducing a key product with very few new features that are visible to its users. This new release, the latest major version of the Macintosh operating system, looks and works almost exactly the same as its predecessor, but has been heavily re-engineered under the covers for greater speed and efficiency, and to add future-oriented core technologies.</p>
<p>The new software, called Snow Leopard, succeeds Apple&#8217;s 2007-vintage Leopard, which I regard as the best computer operating system out there, and markedly superior to its main rival, Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Vista. Snow Leopard goes on sale Friday, Aug. 28, and will be pre-installed on all new Macintosh computers.</p>

<p>The company, which often proclaims its new releases as revolutionary, has been very low key about Snow Leopard. For many months, Apple (AAPL) has made it clear the new OS wouldn&#8217;t sport new eye-popping features, but would instead be focused on what it calls &#8220;refinements&#8221; and &#8220;fine-tuning.&#8221; Perhaps its biggest new feature is something only a minority of Mac owners will ever use: built-in compatibility with Microsoft&#8217;s Exchange corporate email, calendar and contacts service.</p>
<p>Snow Leopard is priced accordingly, at just $29 for people upgrading from Leopard. That&#8217;s $100 less than what Leopard cost. And it&#8217;s $90 less than what Microsoft plans to charge upgraders for the main consumer version of its next version of Windows, called Windows 7, which is due out Oct. 22. Windows 7 is also an iteration on its predecessor, rather than a revolutionary new product, though it has some nice tweaks and will be a more dramatic improvement due to Vista&#8217;s failings. I&#8217;ll have a full review of it closer to its release.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing Snow Leopard on three Macs—an older desktop and a laptop of my own that I upgraded from Leopard, and a new MacBook Pro laptop Apple lent me for testing with Snow Leopard pre-installed. I found Snow Leopard easy to install, faster than Leopard, compatible with my most commonly used software and peripherals, and filled with a number of small, useful refinements and additions.</p>
<p>One delightful change: Snow Leopard takes up less than half the room on a hard disk that Leopard did, and Apple says the average user who upgrades will free up about 7 gigabytes of space. On my 2008-vintage MacBook Pro, I gained back a whopping 14 gigabytes. </p>
<p>But I also encountered a number of bugs and glitches, and a few incompatibilities, including a wildly wrong guess by Snow Leopard about which driver to use for an older, lightly used printer on one of my upgraded Macs. (It did fine with my main printer.)</p>
<p>Overall, I believe Snow Leopard will help keep the Mac an appealing choice for computer buyers, and I can recommend it to existing Mac owners seeking more speed and disk space, or wanting to more easily use Exchange. But I don&#8217;t consider Snow Leopard a must-have upgrade for average consumers. It&#8217;s more of a nice-to-have upgrade. If you&#8217;re happy with Leopard, there&#8217;s no reason to rush out and get Snow Leopard.</p>

<p>For some current Mac owners, Snow Leopard isn&#8217;t an option. About 20% of them are still using older models that aren&#8217;t powered by the Intel (INTC) processors Apple currently uses. Snow Leopard simply won&#8217;t work on these machines, including models designated as G4 or G5 and sold as recently as 2006.</p>
<p>And, for owners of Intel-based Macs who are still using the older Tiger version of the Mac OS, Apple is officially making Snow Leopard available only in a &#8220;boxed set&#8221; that includes other software and costs $169. The reasoning is that these folks never paid the $129 back in 2007 to upgrade to Leopard. But here&#8217;s a tip: Apple concedes that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade will work properly on these Tiger-equipped Macs, so you can save the extra $140.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a quick rundown of what I found in testing Snow Leopard:</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Installation</h5>
<p>Snow Leopard comes in one version, rather than the multiple operating system versions favored by Microsoft (MSFT). And that single version handles hardware and software based on both a standard computer technology, called 32-bit, and a newer one, called 64-bit, which can use much more memory and is faster.</p>
<p>Both my desktop and laptop Macs converted to Snow Leopard quickly and smoothly, in about 45 minutes each. Unlike the upgrade process Microsoft is requiring to get to Windows 7 from Windows XP, the Snow Leopard upgrade preserves all your files, settings and programs where they previously existed, right down to your desktop icons and wallpaper. No disk wiping, file moving, or program re-installation is required. And, as noted above, you actually gain disk space, because Apple has slimmed down the OS and also automatically removes or compresses old system files (not your personal data) that are no longer needed or used often.</p>
<p>However, I did run into a couple of minor problems: on one of my Macs, a screen saver displaying certain of my photos didn&#8217;t work after the switch. Other photos did work. Apple says this is a bug it will fix.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Speed</h5>
<p>After changing to Snow Leopard, my Macs worked faster. I already considered them pretty speedy, so the overall effect wasn&#8217;t mind-blowing. But Snow Leopard&#8217;s built-in programs, like Mail, the Safari browser, and the Finder—Apple&#8217;s equivalent of the Windows Explorer—have all been rewritten behind the scenes, so these and other specific features are now a lot quicker. I found that email folders stuffed with thousands of messages opened almost instantly, and copying files was noticeably faster, even when the destination was on the Internet or a network. The Safari 4 browser, already very fast with Leopard, is even speedier under Snow Leopard, especially on more complex Web sites that use a popular technology called Javascript.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">New Features</h5>
<p>True to its word, Apple has built few new features into Snow Leopard, and, except for Exchange (explained below), these are small. One touted feature is called Dock Expose, which allows you to see small versions of all the open windows in any running program by clicking on its icon in the Dock at the bottom of the screen. But this is mostly a reworking of a feature that already has been on the Mac.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s QuickTime video player has been upgraded, with a clean new interface for playback, and the new ability to record and trim videos. Icons can be more easily enlarged, and you can preview the files they represent, even playing videos in miniature or paging through multipage PDF or PowerPoint files.</p>
<p>My three favorite tweaks, barely mentioned by Apple: </p>
<ul>
<li>&#8220;Substitutions,&#8221; which is like the auto-correct feature in Microsoft Word, but extends the concept to Apple&#8217;s email and other programs;</li>
<li>the ability for Snow Leopard to automatically reset the time zone on the Mac&#8217;s clock based on your location while traveling;</li>
<li>and a new built-in function in QuickTime that allows you to record videos of actions you take on the Mac&#8217;s screen.</li>
</ul>
<h5 class="subhed">Exchange</h5>
<p>Although Exchange is a widely used Microsoft server product, employed by many, many companies to manage employees&#8217; email, calendars, and contacts, it isn&#8217;t built into Windows. To use Exchange, you have to buy add-on software, usually Microsoft&#8217;s Outlook for Windows PCs. It also hasn&#8217;t been built into the Mac OS, and usually required Mac owners to buy Microsoft&#8217;s Entourage program. But, with Snow Leopard, Apple is building Exchange right into the operating system, so it works with Apple&#8217;s free, built-in email, calendar and contact programs.</p>
<p>With the generous help of my company&#8217;s IT folks, I tested this feature, and it worked very well. All my corporate information flowed into Apple&#8217;s programs, very quickly, and I could search the company directory, check the calendars of people with whom I wished to schedule meetings, and more.</p>
<p>However, Apple makes setting up this new feature look simpler than it is. In most cases, I believe, it will require the time and cooperation of corporate IT personnel, who will need time to learn it—especially since, at many companies, relatively few of these folks are Mac experts. In my case, an Apple employee had to help my IT colleagues and me to get it going. But you likely won&#8217;t have that aid.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Compatibility and Glitches</h5>
<p>Commonly used third-party programs, like the Mac versions of Microsoft Office, the Firefox browser, and Adobe Reader, all worked fine in my tests after the upgrade. But a few things didn&#8217;t. Apple admitted I had found a few bugs and said that some software makers will have to upgrade their software because the programs rely on under-the-hood components that have changed in Snow Leopard.</p>
<p>VMware&#8217;s Fusion program for running Windows simultaneously with the Mac operating system worked, and I was able to use Windows. But it was a bit glitchy. VMware (VMW) provided me with a forthcoming new version tailored for Snow Leopard&#8217;s changed underlying architecture, which worked perfectly.</p>
<p>A Cisco (CSCO) program used to connect to corporate virtual private networks caused one of my test machines to completely crash, a rarity on Macs. But Snow Leopard now contains the same Cisco VPN connector as a built-in feature, and that worked perfectly.</p>
<p>Snow Leopard didn&#8217;t properly recognize my older-model Verizon (VZ) cellular modem card, though I was still able to use the card by digging into Apple&#8217;s network preferences screen. Apple says this is a bug it will fix.</p>
<p>As noted above, Snow Leopard didn&#8217;t work at first with an older networked printer on one of my test Macs, and thought it was a laser printer instead of an inkjet. I did get it working, by manually selecting a different printer driver, but Apple admits this is a bug it will have to fix.</p>
<p>Finally, the Time Machine backup file on one of my Macs stopped working. With my permission, Apple examined the file using a diagnostic tool and claimed it had become corrupted a couple of months ago, before the upgrade, and that Snow Leopard merely exposed the problem. I have no way of knowing if this is true, but Time Machine did work perfectly on the two other test Macs.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Underlying Technologies</h5>
<p>In addition to greater 64-bit capability, Snow Leopard has two other big under-the-hood additions. One, called Grand Central Dispatch, makes it easier for developers to write programs that make better use of the multiple &#8220;cores,&#8221; or processing units, in modern processors. The other, called OpenCL, makes it easier for developers to offload some non-graphics tasks to today&#8217;s potent graphics chips. These are very important, especially for power-hungry tasks like video production and high-end gaming, but Microsoft is building similar capabilities into Windows 7, and they won&#8217;t really matter on either platform until third-party developers make use of them, which will take time.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Bottom Line</h5>
<p>Apple already had the best computer operating system in Leopard, and Snow Leopard makes it a little better. But it isn&#8217;t a big breakthrough for average users, and, even at $29, it isn&#8217;t a typical Apple lust-provoking product.     </p>

Like the Kindle, the &#8220;Daily&#8221; reader will feature a wireless connection&#8211;Sony (SNE) will use AT&amp;T (T), while Amazon (AMZN) uses Sprint (S). And unlike the current versions of the Kindle, the Sony device will feature a touchscreen.</p>
<p>But it will come at a price: The device, shown below (click on image to enlarge), will retail in December for $399. That&#8217;s $100 more than the current price of Amazon&#8217;s Kindle 2. And that price point is almost certain to drop in coming months.</p>
<p>Sony wouldn&#8217;t let reporters handle the Daily, and didn&#8217;t put it through its paces, either. So hard to get a sense of much here. A Family of Three Readers<br />
The Reader Pocket Edition sports a five-inch electronic paper display packaged in a stylish chassis and is available in a variety of colors, including navy blue, rose and silver. It is available for the ground-breaking price of $199, making it the most affordable dedicated reading device on the market.<br />
The Reader Touch Edition features a responsive, menu-driven six-inch touch screen panel that enables quick, intuitive navigation, page turning, highlighting and note taking with the swipe of a finger or by using the included stylus pen. It comes in red, black or silver and retails for about $299.<br />
The Reader Daily Edition gives consumers wireless access via AT&amp;T’s 3G mobile broadband network to Sony’s eBook store from just about anywhere in the U.S. Book lovers will be able to browse, purchase and download books as well as select newspapers and magazines when and where they want. There are no monthly fees or transaction charges for the basic wireless connectivity and users still have the option to side load personal documents or content from other compatible sites via USB.<br />
The seven-inch wide, touch screen display provides for intuitive navigation and comfortable layout of content, including newspapers and magazines, whether you’re reading in portrait or landscape orientation. In portrait mode, about 30-35 lines of text are visible, making the experience very similar to that of a printed paperback book. A high contrast ratio with 16 levels of grayscale ensures that text and images are crisp and easy to read. The Daily Edition also boasts an attractive aluminum body with an integrated cover for durability. It has enough internal memory to hold more than one thousand standard eBooks and expansion slots for memory cards to hold even more. It will sell for about $399.<br />

Access to Even More Content at the eBook Store by Sony<br />
In addition to announcing a new family of Readers, Sony has also made several changes and improvements to its eBook Store to provide better access to an even greater variety of ebooks. Earlier this summer Sony announced the availability of more than one million free public domain books from Google, and the company made new releases and New York Times bestseller titles available for $9.99.<br />
Today also marks the launch of Sony’s Library Finder application. Sony, working with OverDrive (www.overdrive.com), the leading global digital distributor of eBooks and to libraries, will now offer visitors to the eBook Store by Sony easy access to their local library’s collection of eBooks. Thousands of libraries in the OverDrive network offer eBooks optimized for the Sony Reader, and visitors can now find these libraries by typing their zip code into the Library Finder. Through the selected library’s download website, visitors can check out eBooks with a valid library card, download them to a PC and transfer to their Reader. At the end of the library’s lending period, eBooks simply expire, so there are never any late fees.<br />

<p>DIGITAL READING ECOSYSTEM EXPANDS FOR SONY’S READER</p>
<p>NEW YORK, August 25, 2009  Further evidence of the broad support for its open approach to digital reading, Sony today announced relationships with a variety of traditional and digital publishers who provide content in industry standard formats to create a universe of reading material compatible with the Reader.<br />
All of these sites will offer content in the EPUB format, the International Digital Publishing Forum’s (IDPF) XML-based standard format for reflowable digital books and publications. EPUB has gained acceptance among major trade book publishers with dozens of publishers already producing the majority of their eBooks using the standard. Sony recently announced that the company is transitioning its entire content library to the EPUB format, giving consumers the freedom to purchase or download free eBooks from the eBook Store by Sony and read them on any EPUB-compatible device.<br />
“From the beginning, we have said that an open format means more choice for consumers,&#8221; said Steve Haber, president of Sony’s Digital Reading Business Division. &#8220;Now, working with other industry leaders, we can provide a device that is compatible with the widest selection of content available. Readers can shop around for what interests them rather than be locked into one store.&#8221;<br />
Sony’s eBook Store already provides access to more than one million public domain Google Books in EPUB format and, starting today, Sony’s Library Finder application will go live. The stores using ABA’s IndieCommerce platform will offer content in the EPUB format and protected by Adobe’s Content Server 4 (ACS4) digital rights management, which is compatible with Sony e-Reader products. In addition, plans are underway to make Sony’s e-Reader devices available for purchase from independent bookstores in time for this holiday season. ABA is a not-for-profit trade organization devoted to meeting the needs of its core members&#8211;independently owned bookstores with storefront locations&#8211;through education, information dissemination, business products and services, and advocacy.<br />
·        BooksOnBoard&#8211;BooksOnBoard, the largest independent eBook bookseller and member of both the ABA and IDPF, has been a staunch supporter of the EPUB standard through its founder Bob Livolsi. BooksOnBoard was the first eBook site to offer the EPUB standard to its burgeoning customer base and has sold more EPUB formatted books than any other online bookstore. BooksOnBoard believes that the EPUB standard significantly benefits the publisher, authors and most importantly the consumer.<br />
·        NetGalley&#8211;NetGalley is an innovative and easy-to-use online service and connection point for book publishers, reviewers, media, librarians, booksellers, bloggers and educators. NetGalley delivers digital galleys and promotional materials to professional readers and helps promote new and upcoming titles. Starting today, NetGalley will support the Reader with the ability to download a protected PDF file and this fall the company will offer digital galleys in EPUB format.<br />
•	Powell&#8217;s Books and Powells.com&#8211;Powell&#8217;s Books is the largest independent bookseller in the world.  Innovative since its inception in 1971, it was one of the first booksellers online (beginning in 1994), and one of the first to sell eBooks for reading devices (the Rocket eBook) in 1999. Powell&#8217;s offers EPUB content for a wide range of compatible devices, including the Sony line.  Powell’s is an important player in the open access world of eBooks, where titles are provided by a wide range of publishers in a competitive retail environment, read on a range of devices, and downloaded and owned by millions of people around the world.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s a brand-new variant of the Amazon Kindle e-reader, and it&#8217;s available from the online bookseller starting this week.</p>
<p>This alternative Kindle, called the DX, is a super-size version of the popular Kindle 2, which arrived earlier this year. It sports a 9.7-inch screen, some 2.5 times as big as the surface area of the Kindle 2&#8242;s 6-inch display. It also sports a higher price tag &#8212; $489, versus $359 for its smaller sibling, which remains on the market.</p>

<p>Like previous models, the Kindle DX allows you to shop for, and wirelessly download, any e-book in Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) growing catalog &#8212; now about 275,000 titles. It uses the same easy-on-the-eyes screen technology as the smaller model but at a higher resolution. It still lacks color, and renders images only in gray scale. But the new DX adds a new capability: auto-rotation, which allows you to read in landscape mode.</p>
<p>This new, larger model isn&#8217;t primarily aimed at readers of standard books. It is targeted at three markets: textbooks, newspapers and other periodicals, and business documents in either Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Word format or Adobe&#8217;s (ADBE) PDF format.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, I&#8217;ve been testing the Kindle DX and I didn&#8217;t like it nearly as much as the Kindle 2, which I own and enjoy using daily. While it performs its promised tasks adequately, I found that its size and weight made it awkward and tiring to hold for long periods of reading. It&#8217;s still fairly thin and light, but it&#8217;s 85% larger and heavier than the standard Kindle.</p>
<p>In addition, Amazon has degraded the user interface. To prevent the device from being even larger, the company had to remove the left-side page-turning buttons, confining all the controls to a vertical strip on the right. The keyboard at the bottom is also more vertically cramped.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re left-handed, you have to spin the device around and rotate the screen to get buttons on the left, where they appear with their labels upside-down.</p>
<p>Similarly, if you choose to read in landscape mode, all the navigation controls, including the joystick for moving the cursor, will be awkwardly placed at either the top or bottom, far from where your hands are holding the device, and the keyboard essentially will be unusable.</p>
<p>In my view, the Kindle DX would have been a better product with on-screen touch controls that could instantly adapt to its size and orientation.</p>
<p>In reading standard books on the DX, I also encountered instances where the text on a page varied in shade from light gray to black.</p>
<p>I had mixed results with business documents. As with previous Kindles, you can either email personal documents to your device, for a fee, or drag them onto the Kindle via a cable, for free. But, unlike the smaller models, the new DX has PDF display capability built in, so it renders PDF files much more accurately than the older Kindles. That is a big improvement. It also allows you to view Excel and PowerPoint files if you save them in PDF format before sending them to your Kindle DX.</p>

<p>I tried a variety of documents, and in many cases the results were great. The text was crisp, and the tables and graphics looked like they should. But I found that on some of these PDF documents, the text was too small to read. Yet, the Kindle lacks the ability to zoom in on PDF documents. You often can make the type larger by rotating to landscape mode, but this splits the PDFs into multiple pages, sometimes breaking them awkwardly.</p>
<p>Also, Amazon has raised its fees for converting and delivering business documents via email to all Kindles. The charge was formerly 10 cents a document. Now, it&#8217;s 15 cents per megabyte, which can add up if you load up your Kindle with lots of large documents. Most of my test documents, which were fairly small, cost over $1 each.</p>
<p>Newspapers looked about the same on the DX as they do on the smaller Kindles. Despite the larger screen, they don&#8217;t use traditional print or Web layouts, but a special Kindle layout that some users like a lot, but which I find annoying because it makes it harder to quickly scan multiple headlines.</p>
<p>The Kindle DX does have some nice touches. For the extra money, you not only get a larger screen, but also about twice the storage capacity. Also, because the screen is wider, you can adjust the margins on the DX, to obtain a line length that&#8217;s comfortable for your eyes and optimal for reading speed.</p>
<p>Amazon claims the same multiday battery life for the DX as for the Kindle 2. In my tests, I was able to go for several days of moderate reading without recharging, and much more if I turned off the wireless capability.</p>
<p>Although I wasn&#8217;t able to test college textbooks, I suspect they may be the killer app for this product. Many already are so expensive and heavy they could make the weight and price of the Kindle DX seem trivial in comparison.</p>
<p>But for standard books, I&#8217;d stick with the smaller, more comfortable Kindle 2.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s no other major item most of us own that is as confusing, unpredictable and unreliable as our personal computers. Everybody has questions about them, and we aim to help.</p>
<p>Here are a few questions about computers I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</p>

<p class="question">I switched from PC to Mac a year ago, but now I am thinking of adding a Windows laptop. If I do, what kind of compatibility problem would I have? I would be using the laptop mostly to write, to send/receive email and to Web browse.</p>
<p> In the old days, there were compatibility problems, but most of those have gone away. Based on your simple predicted usage, I&#8217;d say that you should be fine. For instance, both Macs and PCs can interchangeably open and edit all of the major file types &#8212; JPG pictures, MP3 music, Microsoft Office documents, Adobe PDF files, etc. Email and instant messages can, of course, be exchanged between the two platforms, even if you are using different programs. And Macs understand Windows file extensions. Also, you can use both platforms simultaneously on the same home network to access the Internet.</p>
<p>In some cases, you might need different programs to open the same files on the two platforms. But even that obstacle has greatly diminished. For instance, programs like the Firefox and Safari Web browsers, Adobe Reader, iTunes, Microsoft Office, Google Earth, Picasa, Photoshop and many others come in native versions for both platforms that can handle the same files. And, of course, Web-based programs like Gmail and Yahoo Mail work on both. Sometimes, the same programs have different features and user interfaces on Windows and Macs, but I haven&#8217;t found these differences hard to master.</p>
<p>The biggest problems for average users are Quicken, whose Mac version is inferior and incompatible; Internet Explorer, which is no longer made for the Mac; and Microsoft Outlook, which is replaced on the Mac by a program called Entourage that is similar but uses a different file format. And networking can be tricky. In general, the Mac does a better job of seeing Windows PCs on a network than Windows does of seeing Macs.</p>
<p class="question">I use Outlook Express for my email, and I store a lot of mail in local folders. Is there a simple way to back these up? If I buy a new computer, can they be transferred?</p>
<p> Yes. There are two methods. One is a manual method, which Microsoft explains in a detailed document at this Web site: <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670">support.microsoft.com/kb/270670</a>.</p>
<p>The other, quicker, method is to obtain one of several utility programs that can back up your Outlook Express data and, in some cases, allow you to transfer it to another PC. I haven&#8217;t tested these in years, and thus can&#8217;t recommend one over another. But one example is a free program called Outlook Express Backup, which can be found at <a href="http://genie-soft.com/products/oeb">genie-soft.com/products/oeb</a>. Another is a $40 program called Outlook Express Backup Wizard, which can be found at: <a href="http://outlook-express-backup.com">outlook-express-backup.com</a>.</p>
<p class="question">Do you know of an iPhone GPS application that speaks directions? It would make the iPhone similar to a TomTom or Garvin GPS unit.</p>
<p>A: No, but Apple recently announced that, under its new 3.0 operating system for the iPhone, such programs will be possible. Several companies are believed to be working on them, and I expect them to be available later in the year. The reason none exist yet is partly legal, having to do with the licensing of the underlying maps.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Like many people today, I keep a lot of my important documents and communications in digital form. But I still print out the files and put them on my desk so I can have them in front of me instead of buried in computer subfolders within folders.</p>
<p>This week, I tested BumpTop, a program that displays items in a way that makes programs and files easy to see and open. It does this by turning your digital desktop into a three-dimensional environment that looks like your physical desktop. A few quick gestures neatly stack piles of items or tack important items onto one of four virtual walls. You can even flick your mouse to &#8220;toss&#8221; files to programs or group files into a pile, like stacking all your PDF files together. Special photo frames on the walls show slideshows of photos from PC folders or feeds from photo Web sites like Flickr or Picasa.</p>

<p>BumpTop comes from Toronto-based Bump Technologies Inc. and it has been in a private testing stage for a little over a year. Starting Wednesday, it&#8217;s available for anyone to download at <a href="http://bumptop.com" rel="external">BumpTop.com</a>. It comes in a free or $29 Pro version. In Pro, files you use most often will grow bigger over time and you can flip through a pile&#8217;s contents by rolling the mouse&#8217;s scroll wheel, among other things.</p>
<p>I used BumpTop Pro for over two weeks and tried it on four computers running three different Windows operating systems: XP, Vista, and the prerelease version of Windows 7. BumpTop says it hopes to develop a Mac version in the future. (It should work on Parallels, a program that runs Windows virtually on a Mac, according to Bump Technologies, but not on Fusion, a similar program.)</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Good-Looking Display</h5>
<p>This program is a real looker. When I showed it to friends, they immediately wanted to play with it, dragging pictures to pin on virtual walls and drawing circles around several icons at once to stack them into piles like magic. And when you toss files to certain programs, they perform functions. A Microsoft Word document tossed to the email icon generates an email with the document attached. Photos I tossed to the Facebook icon were posted on the social-networking site. Files can be tossed to a printer, the recycle bin, other piles and, in the Pro version, attached USB drives.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Program Switch</h5>
<p>But as much as I liked BumpTop, I kept coming back to the same conclusion: It was fun while I was using it, but I wasn&#8217;t naturally inclined to leave the program I was using &#8212; like my email program, my browser or TweetDeck &#8212; just to do something on the desktop in a more visually pleasing way. And since the computer&#8217;s desktop has never been as functional as popular programs, it&#8217;s hard to expect people to spend a lot of time there.</p>

<p>Also, while BumpTop introduces a new, attractive user interface to the desktop, its 3-D functionality doesn&#8217;t extend throughout the whole computer, so you find yourself jumping back and forth between different ways of doing things.</p>
<p>BumpTop requires a computer with 3-D graphics and drivers, which older machines won&#8217;t have. Just for kicks I installed BumpTop on my older XP machine, which didn&#8217;t have the necessary requirements, and sure enough, it ran slowly and didn&#8217;t represent programs like Microsoft Outlook (MSFT) and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox with the correct icons. Specific system requirements for BumpTop, along with a list of what the Pro version has that the free version lacks, can be found at BumpTop.com/download.</p>
<p>BumpTop&#8217;s point of view is like looking down from the ceiling in a room with four walls. It installs with three picture frames on its walls, and these display content from three sources: your computer&#8217;s My Pictures folder, Flickr.com&#8217;s main photo feed and a Flickr feed of photos Bump Technologies chose. You can change the images in settings, or delete the frames altogether.</p>
<p>The picture frames show ever-changing slideshows, and to do this, they only load low-resolution thumbnails of the images they display. This looks good when you&#8217;re quickly glancing at BumpTop, but if you double-click on a frame to zoom in, you&#8217;ll see a blurry photo. Bump Technologies says it plans to improve this where possible. Any photos on BumpTop other than those displayed in frames are visible in high resolution when you zoom in.</p>
<p>BumpTop loads with icons representing Twitter, Facebook and Email pinned to its right wall. And you can add your printer to the wall and toss things to it, printing them immediately.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wall Clingers</h5>
<p>The small visual details built into BumpTop make it a pleasure to use. Every time you open something, its representative icon hurls toward you in 3-D as if it were thrown. Items that are pinned to a wall flip end over end and playfully cling to the wall surface like a starfish with sticky, suction feet.</p>
<p>Special mouse movements generate on-screen options for organizing your BumpTop. Lassoing multiple images by drawing a line around them with your mouse pulls up a pie menu with options like &#8220;Grow,&#8221; &#8220;Shrink&#8221; and &#8220;Grid.&#8221; A &#8220;Pile by Type&#8221; option can organize all or just some of your desktop icons into piles arranged by similar characteristics, which by itself could be a big help.</p>
<p>Searching for something on your desktop isn&#8217;t a hassle anymore. Any time BumpTop is open, you can start typing and the program will search names of all items in BumpTop for results with the text you&#8217;re typing; those that match your request will glow.</p>
<p>I tried BumpTop on a touch-screen PC running Windows 7 &#8212; the HP TouchSmart PC &#8212; and the feeling of reaching out and tossing things around with my finger was even more enjoyable than using the mouse. As touch-screen PCs become more popular, BumpTop and programs like it will fit in more naturally.</p>
<p>If you miss seeing the photo that was on your regular desktop, an adjustment in Settings lets you use your Windows background on the BumpTop floor. Images can be assigned to each of the four walls; I assigned a photo of the National Mall at night to my back wall and a photo of my favorite lighthouse to my floor.</p>
<p>BumpTop is a pleasure to use and for no cost, the free version is certainly worth a try. If you like what you see and you&#8217;re willing to change the way you use your desktop, the Pro version might be worthwhile. Just be sure your computer has the correct specifications and be ready for blurry close-ups of the picture frames.</p>
