Now we know why it was <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090528/d7-interview-jon-rubinstein-and-roger-mcnamee-and-the-palm-pre/">Palm executive chairman Jon Rubinstein and investor Roger McNamee</a> on stage at <strong>D</strong> last month talking up the Pre, and not CEO Ed Colligan: Colligan was on his way out.</p>
<p>On Wednesday, Palm (PALM) named <a href="http://investor.palm.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=389058">Rubinstein as its new chairman and CEO</a>. Come Friday he’ll succeed Colligan, who is leaving the company after 16 years to join McNamee at Elevation Partners.  Apparently Palm, who recruited Rubinstein, a former Apple (AAPL) engineer, to turn the company around has decided it would much rather have him in its highest office than Colligan under whose leadership it was foundering.</p>
<p>In a statement, Rubinstein&#8211;who has spent the past two years quarterbacking the development of the Pre and its webOS&#8211;welcomed his new role. &#8220;I am very excited about taking on this expanded role at Palm,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Ed and I have worked very hard together the past two years, and I&#8217;m grateful to him for everything he&#8217;s done to help set the company up for success. With Palm webOS we have ten-plus years of innovation ahead of us, and the Palm Pre is already one of the year&#8217;s hottest new products. Due in no small part to Ed&#8217;s courageous leadership, we&#8217;re in great shape to get Palm back to continuous growth, and we plan to keep the trajectory going upward.&#8221;</p>
<p>Reached for comment late Wednesday afternoon, Roger McNamee offered up this rather canned statement on Palm&#8217;s leadership transition: “With Ed’s decision to step down, Jon Rubinstein is the natural choice to lead Palm into its next phase of growth.  Jon has proven to have exactly the right mix of product vision, organizational leadership and operational capabilities to help Palm regain a leadership position. We are grateful for the leadership role Ed has played in initiating this transformation and getting through the successful launch of webOS and the Pre.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://www.google.com/finance?q=palm">Palm shares</a> are up 3.75 percent at $12.44 on the news.</p>

<p>That deal, which ran from Feb. 6 to March 31, offered a second RIM handset of equal or lesser value with the purchase of any Blackberry and a two-year contract&#8211;an attractive proposition and one that many a consumer took the carrier up on. NPD says RIM&#8217;s consumer smartphone market share rose to nearly 50 percent in the first quarter, an increase of 15 percent. Meanwhile, Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) and Palm&#8217;s (PALM) shares both declined 10 percent. &#8220;Buy one, get one free&#8221; trumps &#8220;what are the handy things about the iPhone&#8221; every time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There have long been third-party programs for the BlackBerry, but in light of Apple&#8217;s enormous success with an easy, built-in App Store for the iPhone, Research in Motion today unveiled its own similar store, called BlackBerry App World. The store has hundreds of apps available at launch, and RIM says it expects around a thousand to be available in its first week. Like Apple&#8217;s store, RIM&#8217;s offers both free and paid apps that download directly to your device.</p>

<p>I haven&#8217;t had time to do a full review of App World, but I tried it out for a couple of hours on a top-of-the-line BlackBerry Bold and a fast network connection. Here are my first impressions.</p>
<p>RIM&#8217;s store is clumsier to use than Apple&#8217;s (AAPL), but it works. The selection at launch is decent, but with some surprising omissions. The emphasis seems, at first glance, to be toward pricier apps. And, there are some limitations and oddities. Perhaps the biggest of these is that App World is only available for relatively recent BlackBerry models&#8211;the ones with trackballs instead of side wheels, starting with the Pearl, which came out in the fall of 2006. That means that millions of people with older models can&#8217;t use the app store.</p>

<p>App World has apps in all the major categories&#8211;Games, Productivity, Entertainment, News, Weather, Finance, Health, Social Networking, and so forth. The selection is broad. For instance, on the first day, it offers 166 games, 99 productivity and utility apps, and 69 reference and book apps. There are even a few of those fart apps that have proved so popular on the iPhone, something that seems so&#8230; unBlackBerry-like.</p>
<p>But there are some surprising omissions. There&#8217;s no dedicated Twitter client, at least none that either I or a RIM (RIMM) spokeswoman could find at this writing. There&#8217;s a Facebook app, but it&#8217;s the same rudimentary one RIM has offered for a long time. There&#8217;s no Google (GOOG) app, just a shortcut to a Google page in the BlackBerry&#8217;s browser. And there&#8217;s no app for shopping at Amazon (AMZN) or viewing Kindle books. No doubt these things will show up eventually, but given the competition and the time RIM has spent getting this ready, I was surprised they weren&#8217;t there at launch.</p>
<p>Still, I downloaded about a dozen apps and liked most of them, including the Bloomberg, Pandora, and Shazam apps. But a $2.99 Associated Press app didn&#8217;t work properly and looked crude compared with the free AP app on the iPhone. Shazam, which identifies songs playing nearby and gives you a chance to buy them, correctly identified several songs on the BlackBerry, but unlike on the iPhone, didn&#8217;t link to videos related to the songs.</p>

<p>The buying process is harder than on the iPhone. You have to download the store itself, then pay for any apps you want with PayPal, which requires going through a couple of screens each time. On several occasions, despite my fast, strong, steady network connection, app downloads stopped in midstream multiple times, And the least expensive apps are $2.99, about triple the cost of the cheapest typical paid apps on the iPhone. Indeed, I spotted a surprising number of $20, $30 and $40 apps on App World.</p>
<p>App World has other limitations and oddities. You can only save apps to the BlackBerry&#8217;s limited internal memory, not to a roomier flash memory card. RIM has made up for this by allowing you to also store your apps online, but that&#8217;s still a pain, especially when you&#8217;re not connected. And, oddly, the apps you obtain from App World aren&#8217;t located in the BlackBerry&#8217;s Applications folder, but in the Downloads folder. You can, of course, move them around, even placing them right on the home screen.</p>
<p>BlackBerry fans unfamiliar with the iPhone won&#8217;t care about some of these comparisons, of course. They will, and should, just be happy that their phones are now much richer and more versatile devices. And, in the end, that&#8217;s what counts. RIM is now truly in the platform game, which will make its products more attractive and could make its shareholders richer.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here are a few questions I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>I get confused by all the different models of the BlackBerry &#8212; Bold, Storm, Curve, Pearl and so on. Can you briefly explain the differences?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> There are too many models to list here, because RIM, the maker of BlackBerry, makes varying versions for competing wireless carriers, and these may have different features, even if they look the same. However, here&#8217;s a quick breakdown of the main flavors.</p>
<p>The Bold is the top-of-the-line BlackBerry, relatively large and costly, with a wide keyboard and a big, vivid screen. The Curve is its little brother &#8212; still sporting a good, full, keyboard, but lower-priced, smaller and lighter. The newest Curve, called the 8900, has a beautiful screen and is even sleeker than its predecessor.</p>
<p>The Pearl is a slimmer, low-priced, more fashion-oriented model with a truncated keyboard that has two letters on each key and relies on software to guess which one you meant to hit. The Pearl Flip is much like the Pearl, except, as its name implies, it&#8217;s a flip phone.</p>
<p>The Storm is the BlackBerry line&#8217;s most direct competitor to the Apple iPhone. It&#8217;s the only BlackBerry without a physical keyboard, instead relying on a large, beautiful touch screen for typing and navigation. Unlike on the iPhone, however, the Storm provides physical feedback each time you press down on the screen.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I&#8217;d be interested in the new, tiny iPod Shuffle, except that I dislike Apple&#8217;s earbuds. And, because they have now moved the playback controls to the earbud cord, I can&#8217;t use my favorite third-party set. What are my options?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Well, one option is to buy the old model of the Shuffle, which Apple is keeping on the market. It&#8217;s larger, but still very small, and has the controls on the player itself, rather than on the earbud cord, so you can use plain old earbuds or headphones from other companies. Plus, at $49, it&#8217;s $30 less, though it has only 25% of the capacity of the new one and lacks the new model&#8217;s voice features.</p>
<p>Another, costlier, option is to buy better earbuds that have the new controller built in. Apple sells a pair of $79 in-ear buds with a control module on the cord. They were designed for the iPod Touch, but the company says they work perfectly with the new Shuffle. Several other headphone companies, such as Klipsch, have announced plans to offer either headphones or adapters with Shuffle-compatible controls in coming months.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>Is it safe to upgrade my Vista PC to the beta version of Windows 7?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Since it is a beta version, there is always some danger of problems. But I have upgraded a couple of Vista computers with no special tricks or help, and with no significant problems. Still, there are a couple of caveats. First, Microsoft will be replacing the beta with a more polished &#8220;release candidate&#8221; that could involve a re-installation process, so you may want to hold off. Second, Microsoft isn&#8217;t guaranteeing that every hardware feature on every computer or peripheral will work properly under the pre-release versions.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>To its fiercest devotees, one of the best things about the BlackBerry is its carefully designed physical keyboard, which the skilled BlackBerry addict can play like a violin. These folks scorn Apple&#8217;s popular iPhone, whose keyboard is virtual and must be operated by tapping on the screen.</p>
<p>But, on Friday, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=vz'>Verizon Wireless</a> and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=RIMM'>Research in Motion</a> (RIMM), the BlackBerry&#8217;s maker, will do the unthinkable: They will introduce a BlackBerry model without a physical keyboard, one where typing and navigating require tapping on glass, just as users do on the iPhone. This new model is called the BlackBerry Storm, and will sell for $250 with a two-year contract, though a $50 mail-in rebate can bring the price down close to the $199 that Apple (AAPL) charges for the base model of the iPhone.</p>

<p>Despite its lack of a keyboard, the Storm is a real BlackBerry in every other respect, with push email, corporate features and the familiar BlackBerry menus. In many respects, the Storm is a touch-based, large-screen version of the recently released BlackBerry Bold, which is the most polished version of a traditional BlackBerry. It is also the latest member of the new class of hand-held computers, the super-smart phone category kicked off by the iPhone last year and joined by the Google G1 earlier this year.</p>
<p>The Storm sports a large, high-resolution touch screen that fills most of its surface and automatically switches from portrait to landscape mode when the phone is turned. There&#8217;s also a forthcoming souped-up download store for third-party software, meant to be similar to the ones on the iPhone and the Google (GOOG) phone. And the Storm can even be used in European and other countries where most Verizon (VZ) phones don&#8217;t work.</p>

<p>However, the biggest innovation in the Storm is a clever feature RIM hopes will give it a big advantage over the iPhone. When you strike a key or icon on the Storm&#8217;s screen, you feel a physical sensation, as if you were pressing down on a real key or button. That&#8217;s because you are, in fact, pressing a real button. The entire glass display is one large button, mounted on a mechanical substructure that allows it to be depressed when pressure is applied.</p>
<p>The idea behind this feature is to make typing on glass feel much more like typing on a real keyboard, and thus to make the virtual keyboard, and the touch interface, more acceptable to people used to physical keyboards and buttons. This push-down screen also replaces the side-mounted scroll wheel or track ball on other BlackBerrys for activating menu choices and icons.</p>
<p>But, in my tests, this physical feedback feature, which RIM calls SurePress, didn&#8217;t magically turn the Storm&#8217;s touch interface and virtual keyboard into their physical counterparts. The feature does provide a more reassuring confirmation that a key has been struck or an icon has been clicked than the mere visual feedback one receives from the iPhone. But neither I, nor any of the several BlackBerry addicts I asked to try it out, considered typing on the Storm&#8217;s keyboard to be very similar to using the keyboard of a traditional full-sized BlackBerry.</p>
<p>In my opinion, using the Storm&#8217;s keyboard is much more like using the iPhone&#8217;s keyboard than a traditional BlackBerry&#8217;s. I found that I could type quite well on the Storm after awhile, but that a greater adjustment, and more practice, were required than with a physical keyboard.</p>
<p>The Storm also has a keyboard oddity that I found annoying, and that may put off others. It presents you with a full virtual keyboard only when you are holding it horizontally. When you hold the Storm vertically, you get a mashed-up keyboard, like the one on the narrower BlackBerry Pearl, which has multiple letters on each key. This keyboard design relies on software to guess which letter you meant to press. You can also switch to a virtual cellphone-style keypad that requires you to hit each key multiple times.</p>

<p>This is a curious design decision. Once a company ditches a physical keyboard for a virtual one, it can create all kinds of keyboard variations. RIM could have offered a full, vertically oriented keyboard, even if it would have had smaller, more closely spaced keys.</p>
<p>RIM also failed to customize the Storm&#8217;s virtual keyboard for some common, specific tasks. For instance, on the iPhone, when you are typing in a Web address in the browser, the keyboard morphs to offer a convenient key that automatically enters &#8220;.com&#8221;. Not so on the Storm.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s another glaring deficit in the Storm: It lacks Wi-Fi capability. This means that, unlike on the Bold, the iPhone or the Google G1, if high-speed cellphone data service is absent or pokey, you can&#8217;t fall back on speedy Wi-Fi connections in public places. And, at home or in the office, you can&#8217;t take advantage of Wi-Fi connections that are often much faster than cellphone data networks.</p>
<p>The Storm has some important advantages over the iPhone. Its screen, while 7% smaller physically, offers about 13% higher resolution. Photos and videos look beautiful on it. It has much better battery life for phone calls than either the iPhone or the Google G1. While the latter two phones deliver just under their claimed five hours of talk time, in my tests, the Storm lasted a bit over six hours, which is actually half an hour more than its claimed 5.5 hours of talk time. And the Storm has a removable battery, unlike its Apple rival.</p>
<p>This new BlackBerry comes with more memory than the similarly priced base model of the iPhone &#8212; nine gigabytes versus eight gigabytes. And, unlike the iPhone&#8217;s memory, the Storm&#8217;s is expandable, via larger flash cards.</p>
<p>The Storm&#8217;s camera is much better than the iPhone&#8217;s, at 3.2 megapixels, versus just 2 megapixels for the Apple device. It also has zoom and flash, features the iPhone&#8217;s camera lacks. And, unlike the iPhone or the Google G1, the Storm can record videos. In my tests, all of these camera features worked well.</p>
<p>Also, the Storm has copy and paste functionality; MMS (a service for sending photos directly to other phones without using email); voice dialing; and the ability to act as a modem for your laptop. It also allows you to edit, and not just to view, Microsoft (MSFT) Office documents. All of these features are missing from the iPhone out of the box.</p>
<p>The Storm also has a better speaker than the iPhone, and a noise-canceling microphone system. Phone calls, even on speaker phone, were crisp, clear and plenty loud. Physically, the Storm is attractive but hardly svelte. While it&#8217;s about the same length and width as the iPhone, it is 15% thicker and 17% heavier &#8212; almost as heavy as the chunky G1.</p>
<p>The Verizon high-speed network on which the Storm runs is older and better-established than either the T-Mobile (DT) high-speed system the G1 uses or the AT&#038;T (T) 3G network used by the current iPhone. Where Verizon&#8217;s high-speed data coverage is strong, the Storm flies.</p>
<p>But, because it lacks Wi-Fi, the Storm can be much slower at Web access than its main competitors. I tested these Web speeds in two hotels in Silicon Valley. In the first, where Verizon reception was strong, the Storm trounced the iPhone on cellphone data speeds, averaging over 800 kilobits per second to the iPhone&#8217;s 621 kbps over AT&#038;T. But, when I switched the iPhone to use the hotel&#8217;s Wi-Fi network, it beat the Storm by 100 kbps or so.</p>
<p>At the second hotel, barely a mile away, the Storm&#8217;s lack of Wi-Fi hurt much more. There, Verizon&#8217;s signal was poor, and data speeds on the Storm averaged a horrible 96 kbps. But the iPhone on AT&#038;T averaged 459 kbps, and on Wi-Fi the iPhone averaged 785 kbps.</p>
<p>My test Storm, which was a near-final model missing only a few minor software tweaks, was also sluggish at some tasks. It took noticeably longer than the iPhone to flip the first photo from landscape to portrait orientation, or to start the process of flipping through a series of photos by swiping them with a finger. And some other tasks were also slow. It&#8217;s possible that production models will be quicker.</p>
<p>Rim has tweaked the familiar BlackBerry user interface for the touch screen, and in general these changes worked well. You select the menu item or icon you want with a light touch, then press down on the screen to activate or confirm your choice. There are even a couple of cool new touch features. For instance, in a list of emails, if you lightly touch and hold one entry, the Storm shows you all messages in that thread.</p>
<p>But this combination of a light touch followed by a hard press on the large screen took some practice, just like typing did. It befuddled several BlackBerry veterans at first.</p>
<p>And some common tasks took more steps than on the iPhone. For instance, emailing a link from a Web page required four steps on the Storm, versus two on the Apple device. The Storm&#8217;s email system will be familiar to every BlackBerry user. It has the same corporate email features as other BlackBerrys, and I was easily able as well to use a BlackBerry Internet email account and to set up several personal email accounts, including Gmail.</p>
<p>The Web browser is much improved over the one in older BlackBerry models, and offers multiple ways to view and navigate pages, including one in which a finger moves a cursor, just as on a PC. But I found that panning and zooming in the browser was a bit slower and more awkward than on the iPhone. And, to make some Web sites work properly, I had to dig through menus to change options.</p>
<p>Using the BlackBerry desktop software, I was easily able to synchronize my calendar and contact data over a cable from a Windows PC. (There&#8217;s also Mac software for the same task.) But, unlike the iPhone or the G1, the Storm doesn&#8217;t offer wireless synchronization from consumer services, only from corporate servers.</p>
<p>The Storm&#8217;s multimedia software isn&#8217;t as fancy as the iPhone&#8217;s, but it&#8217;s better than the G1&#8242;s, and worked very well in my tests.</p>
<p>Overall, the Storm is a very capable handheld computer that will appeal to BlackBerry users who have been pining for a touch-controlled device with a larger screen. And it offers yet another good option for anyone who is looking to buy one of the new, more powerful, pocket computers.</p>

Most recently, Apple and Google introduced mobile devices with two vital innovations: They run on fast 3G networks and use touch screens. Yesterday <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=rimm'>Research In Motion</a> (RIMM), maker of the BlackBerry, brought out a device that goes halfway: the BlackBerry Bold, which runs on AT&#038;T&#8217;s 3G network, but doesn&#8217;t have a touch screen.</p>
<p>The $300 (with two-year contract) Bold doesn&#8217;t pose as RIM&#8217;s real iPhone competitor; that distinction will fall to the touch-screen BlackBerry Storm due out later this month. Instead, the Bold serves as an upgraded version of the company&#8217;s BlackBerry 8800 series devices. These models are popular with corporations because they focus most on functionality over style. As a result, they tend to be a bit on the large side &#8212; especially compared with the BlackBerry Curve or BlackBerry Pearl.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been using the Bold for the past couple of weeks, both in New York City and in Washington, D.C., and had almost no trouble doing email and Web browsing with its 3G network connection and Wi-Fi capability. I admit that I didn&#8217;t use it much as a phone, mostly because its bulky size made it awkward to hold to my ear while chatting.</p>
<p>On the plus side, the BlackBerry Bold has a bright, beautiful screen and one of the most comfortable keyboards I&#8217;ve used on a mobile device. Behind the scenes, it has a speedy processor that handles email, Web browsing and video playback with ease. The Bold&#8217;s 2.66-inch screen is the largest yet on a BlackBerry.</p>
<p>But the Bold reminded me of my grandparents&#8217; new Buick: handsomely polished and luxuriously comfortable, with plenty of extra bells and whistles. As much as I like the plush feel of this ride, it can feel as big as a boat when I need to park or navigate narrow city streets. Likewise, the Bold&#8217;s large size affords mobile extravagances like a keyboard I could use without looking down and a leatherette-covered back panel. But when tossed in a bag or even held in my hand, the BlackBerry Bold simply feels too heavy and too big.</p>

<h5 class="subhed">Short Memory</h5>
<p>Furthermore, this device&#8217;s $300 price is steep considering it comes with only one gigabyte of memory, and a memory-card slot for expanding that should you choose to do so. By comparison, Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) smallest $199 iPhone comes with eight gigabytes of memory.</p>
<p>The Bold&#8217;s battery lasted for me just over a day after being fully charged. RIM says a full charge will last for four and a half hours of talk time and about 13.5 days of standby. The BlackBerry 8820, by comparison, lasts a bit longer: five hours of talk time and 22 days of standby.</p>
<p>But the Bold&#8217;s brighter screen and faster network allow it to do things that were slow and stuttering in previous models, such as quickly loading and watching YouTube clips on the device&#8217;s browser.</p>
<p>Icons on the Bold&#8217;s main menu look like pale white versions of the colorful, cartoon-like icons found on previous BlackBerrys; perhaps these more-staid icons were added to make the device look more sophisticated. The Bold&#8217;s edges are distinguished with silver chrome, and buttons abound on all sides: a volume rocker on the right edge, customizable convenience keys on the right and left sides, a microSD card slot on the left, a mute button on the top edge and a one-touch button on the bottom that releases the entire back panel.</p>
<p>The Bold&#8217;s leatherette-covered back panel gave the device a richer feel &#8212; a far cry from the flimsy plastic back on my BlackBerry Curve that falls off if I drop it. This black leatherette back can be swapped out for other colors like blue, red, slate and brown, which can be bought at <a href="http://ShopBlackBerry.com" rel="external">ShopBlackBerry.com</a>.</p>
<p>This BlackBerry&#8217;s Web browser uses an on-screen magnifying-glass icon to remind users that they can zoom in to more easily read Web pages. Google&#8217;s G1 device uses a similar magnifying glass. The Bold&#8217;s Menu button (to the left of the trackball) offers a helpful way to browse using the Go To command. This command opens a screen with a blank address bar; a search box that can be set to use Google (GOOG), Wikipedia or <a href="http://Dictionary.com" rel="external">Dictionary.com</a>; and a list of bookmarks and recent history.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Roomy Keyboard</h5>
<p>Emailing on the BlackBerry Bold was a breeze. I grew so fond of its keyboard design &#8212; made with flat, roomy keys and silver &#8220;frets,&#8221; or dividing lines, that separate each row &#8212; that I found myself touch typing without looking down after only three days of use.</p>
<p>RIM says that each key has a subtle high point on it that makes typing more comfortable, and I agreed, rarely typing an incorrect keystroke. Attachments opened in a blink, and DataViz Inc.&#8217;s Word To Go, Sheet To Go and Slideshow To Go make it simple to open and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.</p>
<p>As the presidential election approached, friends often emailed links to videos or Web sites with information about the latest news. On my BlackBerry Curve, I rarely even bother trying to open these links because that device&#8217;s EDGE connection is so slow. But the Bold opened Web addresses and videos with no problem, whether I was on AT&#038;T&#8217;s 3G network or Wi-Fi in my home or office.</p>
<p>A pre-installed AT&#038;T (T) application called CV, which stands for Cellular Video, holds a selection of clips from sources like CNN, ESPN and ABC as well as full episodes of TV shows (I watched a good portion of &#8220;30 Rock&#8221;). Categories at the bottom of the CV menu screen combine videos into groups like Most Watched, Entertainment and HBO Mobile, which costs $5 a month extra.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Driving Directions</h5>
<p>While you&#8217;re driving, AT&#038;T Navigator, by TeleNav, makes use of the Bold&#8217;s big, bright screen by flashing clear turn-by-turn directions on the device as you go.</p>
<p>I found the BlackBerry Bold to be a huge asset for on-the-go productivity, and some users won&#8217;t mind this mobile device&#8217;s large build and higher price because of its luxuriously comfortable features.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re thinking of upgrading your BlackBerry to get a faster experience, and don&#8217;t want to wait to try the BlackBerry Storm&#8217;s touch screen later this month, the Bold is definitely worth a look.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here are a few questions I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>My IT department will not turn on the feature in our servers that would allow me to receive corporate email on my iPhone. This has forced me to revert back to my BlackBerry Pearl. Can I transfer my iTunes music to my Pearl?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> It depends on what you mean by &#8220;iTunes music.&#8221; If you mean music you bought from the iTunes store in protected format &#8212; which describes most of the store&#8217;s catalog &#8212; the Pearl can&#8217;t play it, unless you go through a laborious multistep process to convert it to unprotected files. If you mean unprotected music that is managed by the iTunes program on your PC, the Pearl can handle it as long as it is in open formats supported by the Pearl, including the MP3 or open AAC formats.</p>
<p>To get these files into your Pearl, simply use the music-transfer software that came with the Pearl to copy the songs from your computer&#8217;s hard disk to either the Pearl&#8217;s internal memory or to a flash memory card you may have in your Pearl.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I recently purchased a new iMac with the Leopard operating system, and have installed Windows Vista on it as well, using Leopard&#8217;s Boot Camp feature, so the Mac can boot into either OS. I would like both of those operating systems to share an external hard drive so I can back up my files. Is it possible to do that?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Yes, provided you follow one of two scenarios. The first would be to format the external drive as a Windows drive, but be careful to use the Windows format called &#8220;FAT32,&#8221; not the one called NTFS. Out of the box, Macs can see all Windows drives and can read from them all. But they can only save files to Windows drives that use the FAT32 system for organizing files. The downside of this is that the FAT32 system only allows files of up to 4 gigabytes each.</p>
<p>The other scenario would be to use a Mac-formatted external drive, which doesn&#8217;t have that limitation. Of course the Mac operating system can handle such drives perfectly, but Windows can&#8217;t even see them. However, in your Vista setup, you can install a third-party Windows program called MacDrive 7, which allows Windows to both read from, and write to, Mac-formatted drives. I have tested it successfully with Vista under Boot Camp on an iMac. The $50 program can be downloaded from mediafour.com.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>The hard disk on my new Sony VAIO laptop is filling up fast. It is trying to get me to watch a lot of movie trailers. Is all that video stored in my machine somewhere and if so can I dump some of it out?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> If your Sony laptop is like mine, not only are the unwanted movie trailers pre-loaded on your hard disk, but so are the entire movies, which Sony actually charges you to watch. In my case, these files took up over 4 gigabytes of precious disk space. This is a particularly outrageous example of what I call &#8220;craplets,&#8221; unwanted trial software that litters new Windows desktops. You can delete these files and reclaim all that disk space without any harm to your computer.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A number of my friends, ranging in age from mid-20s to early 30s, are in no rush to abandon their basic cellphones for smart phones like BlackBerrys or Treos. It&#8217;s not for lack of technological skill; these people are constantly text messaging and emailing, and spend a huge amount of time online every day. But they&#8217;d rather not carry a large, geeky-looking device. Nor do they want to pay a lot for this device and its monthly plan. Some of them even assume that smart phones work only with corporate email accounts.</p>

<p>The two companies most often associated with corporate-issued devices, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=rimm'>Research In Motion</a> Ltd. and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=palm'>Palm</a> Inc. are anxious to convert people like my friends. This week I tested Palm&#8217;s new attempt: the Centro (<a href="http://www.palm.com/centro" rel="external">www.palm.com/centro</a>). It looks like a hip, miniature version of the more expensive Palm Treo, with most of the same functions and only costs $99 after rebates and a two-year contract. The Centro comes in onyx and ruby, though the latter won&#8217;t be sold until next month.</p>
<p>Overall, I liked the Centro. It has plenty of pluses, including a touch screen, easy email set-up for personal accounts like Gmail and Hotmail, built-in instant messaging for three programs, a camera for still shots or video and expandable memory. It&#8217;s available now and runs on Sprint&#8217;s fast 3G network, costing at least $15 monthly for data on top of your voice plan. Like the Treo, it has a tiny stylus for detailed screen selecting and an on/off ringer switch.</p>
<p>RIM should be credited with introducing one of the first hip, mini smart phones to the demographic of 25-to-30-year-olds without smart phones. About a year ago, it brought out the $200 BlackBerry Pearl 8100, which is narrower than traditional BlackBerrys and is easy to mistake for a stylish cellphone. It uses a condensed keyboard with two letters per key that works using auto-correcting SureType technology, and has a glowing trackball for navigation.</p>
<p>For Palm&#8217;s Centro to compete with the Pearl, it, too, needed to be thinner left to right. But instead of doubling up letters per key and using SureType like the Pearl, the Centro has a shrunken version of Palm&#8217;s full keyboard; letter keys are squeezed so close together that large-fingered users will likely have trouble. I found the Pearl&#8217;s keyboard easier to use because its keys are flatter and larger compared with the Centro keys, which caused me to mistype messages. But the Centro&#8217;s tiny keyboard could be a real step up for people who still use their cellphone&#8217;s numbered keypad to type text messages.</p>
<p>The Centro&#8217;s touch screen saves time and makes navigation easier. The BlackBerry Pearl doesn&#8217;t have a touch screen, forcing users to do a lot of scrolling with the navigational trackball.</p>
<p>A success with the Centro would be much needed good news for Palm, which hasn&#8217;t had an easy go of it lately. While RIM has been cranking out more stylish BlackBerrys, Palm&#8217;s solid Treo hasn&#8217;t changed all that drastically in the past couple of years. Even loyal Treo users are starting to complain about Palm&#8217;s old operating system crashing. Of course, the popularity of <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=aapl'>Apple</a> Inc.&#8217;s iPhone only rubs salt in the wounds of this once unstoppable company.</p>
<p>RIM will bring out a new Pearl, the 8130, next month to step up its game. This Pearl will be the same physically, but will have some internal changes, including the ability to work on the CDMA network, built-in GPS and upgraded software.</p>
<p>I tested a stylish ruby Centro and also got my hands on an early version of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 from Verizon Wireless. Lined up side by side, the Palm Centro looks like a chubby version of the Pearl. The Pearl looks and feels sleeker and sharper than the Centro, due in part to the Centro&#8217;s rounded edges and tiny, bubble-shaped keys.</p>
<p>The Pearl is just a hair smaller in all directions &#8212; width, height and depth. The Centro is almost a full ounce heavier than the Pearl, but each weighs only 4.2 and 3.4 ounces, respectively. The Centro&#8217;s 320&#215;320 resolution screen looks brighter than the Pearl&#8217;s 240&#215;260 screen.</p>
<p>I focused on the Centro, setting up two personal email accounts on it in just a few minutes. I started out typing very slowly on the keyboard, which has keys made of a slightly sticky material. The more familiar I became with it, the faster I could go, but I&#8217;m still not completely comfortable using the keyboard.</p>
<p>I quickly navigated through the Centro&#8217;s menus using Palm&#8217;s familiar operating system. The touch screen saved me from arrowing around to select an icon or menu; I just tapped the screen using my finger or the stylus. First-time smart-phone users will appreciate this aspect.</p>
<p>I made calls on the Centro, pressing the phone shortcut key to get started. The keyboard&#8217;s number keys work just as they do on a Treo, but I preferred using the larger virtual buttons on the touch screen. The Centro felt like a normal cellphone in my hand and against my ear, especially compared with the clunky, rectangular Treos and BlackBerrys. The tiny Centro fit into the smallest purse I own.</p>
<p>An icon on the home screen marked &#8220;IM&#8221; linked me directly into a screen where I could log in to and use three instant-messaging programs simultaneously: AOL&#8217;s AIM, Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live Messenger. I jumped between IM sessions using the left and right navigation key buttons. But a faster way to do this was just by touching the screen to select a program. I also tapped the screen to select names of friends before IMing them. Again, the touch screen saved time and took out the guesswork of which key to press to navigate.</p>
<p>I played preloaded music on the Centro and BlackBerry Pearl; both have built-in speakers that sound remarkably good for such little devices.</p>
<p>Battery life on the Centro is estimated at 3.5 hours of talk time and up to 12.5 days of standby time. The Pearl 8130&#8242;s talk time is expected to fetch 3.8 hours before quitting, but its standby battery is expected to last only nine days. I didn&#8217;t perform rigorous battery tests, but found that my BlackBerry Pearl needed to be charged before my Palm Centro after a weekend of using them for roughly the same amount of time.</p>
<p>The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 comes with only RIM&#8217;s BlackBerry Messenger program. Both the Pearl and Centro have 64 megabytes of internal memory and the ability to expand that using microSD cards.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re considering the leap from a cellphone to a smart phone but don&#8217;t want the bigger, geekier look of one of these helpful devices, the Palm Centro is a good option. Its keyboard will take some getting used to, but its touch screen will win you over by providing a simpler way to navigate &#8212; especially for smart-phone novices.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When you think of a BlackBerry phone, what usually comes to mind is a squat, bland, all-business device that is great at email and fair at phone calls, but does little else well. BlackBerry models have been mostly aimed at big businesses, and they have lacked cameras, multimedia capabilities and style. Even their model names have been boring designations like &#8220;8700c.&#8221;</p>
<p>But that image will change radically next week when the BlackBerry&#8217;s maker, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=RIMM'>Research in Motion</a>, introduces a sleek but powerful model called simply the Pearl. It&#8217;s not only the smallest BlackBerry ever made. It&#8217;s also the smallest smart phone from any maker with a keyboard for typing emails and other text.</p>
<p>All shiny black and silver, the slender Pearl looks more like a fashion phone than a keyboard-equipped smart phone. It is shorter, narrower and lighter than the much-admired Motorola Q, though a bit thicker. And, like the Q, the Pearl, which is being launched next Tuesday by T-Mobile, costs $199 with a two-year contract. The Pearl is squarely aimed at consumers who need powerful email capabilities, but also want style and bells and whistles.</p>
<p>When it comes to email, the Pearl is a true BlackBerry. The email interface is essentially the same as on larger BlackBerrys. It can be used with a traditional corporate BlackBerry email system, and, for consumers, it works with the BlackBerry Internet Service offered by T-Mobile.</p>
<p>Still, for hard-core BlackBerry addicts, the Pearl is a shocking departure. The iconic side scroll wheel has been replaced by a tiny, light-up trackball beneath the large, bright color screen. It&#8217;s the first BlackBerry with a camera, the first with a memory card slot (though no card is included) and the first to play songs and videos.</p>

<p>And then there&#8217;s the keyboard, where the slim new design has required a major compromise. As on the older and bulkier BlackBerry 7100 series, the full keyboard has been replaced by a smaller version that squeezes two letters onto most keys. To avoid repetition and error, the Pearl uses smart software called SureType that has the uncanny ability to guess the word you meant to type in almost all cases. But it doesn&#8217;t work if you&#8217;re entering a new Web address or a person&#8217;s name that the phone hasn&#8217;t memorized.</p>
<p>To find out if RIM can actually be cool, I&#8217;ve been toting around a Pearl, testing all its functions. In general, I like it, and can recommend it to anyone who wants real BlackBerry email capabilities in a great-looking multimedia phone. Voice quality was excellent and the interface for making phone calls, once a big problem on BlackBerrys, is now decent. There&#8217;s even a Treo-like universal silencer button, and the speaker phone function turns on and off with a single key press.</p>
<p>Setting up an email account with the BlackBerry Internet Service is easily done, either on the phone or via a T-Mobile Web page. This service replaces a corporate email server with a Web-based email system that pushes messages to the phone from an existing email account or from a new one. T-Mobile plans to charge $19.99 a month for unlimited email and Web browsing on top of the price of an existing voice plan.</p>
<p>The Pearl pushed my normal email to the phone perfectly, and, in that respect, it acted just like every other BlackBerry I&#8217;ve used. Because of the different keyboard, some of the keyboard shortcuts for navigating in email and other applications differ from those on older models. If you change a couple of settings, you can delete an email with one click, and whole batches of emails can be deleted with two clicks.</p>
<p>Popular email attachment types, including Microsoft Word and Excel files, can be opened and read, but not edited. I was able to easily synchronize calendar and contact entries with Microsoft Outlook on a Windows PC, and to easily transfer songs, pictures and videos to the Pearl using RIM&#8217;s desktop software.</p>
<p>The Pearl&#8217;s music software correctly read the artist, album and song information on every track I loaded into the phone, and even displayed the album covers. The speaker on the Pearl sounds good, and music sounds even better with stereo headphones.</p>
<p>Photos also displayed well, and the Pearl can zoom in on them or show them as slideshows. Any song can be turned into your ring tone, and any picture can be used as your desktop wallpaper.</p>
<p>The Pearl really shone when playing video. Unfortunately, it accepts only a limited number of video file types, and even many of those I tested didn&#8217;t work. Some videos sucked up so much of the phone&#8217;s power that other functions, even pausing the playback, were very slow.</p>
<p>The Web browser is OK, but it&#8217;s hampered by what I consider the biggest drawback to the Pearl: the network on which it runs. T-Mobile uses a network technology called EDGE, which is much, much slower than the fastest networks offered by Verizon, Sprint and Cingular.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s another reason I&#8217;m not trading my Palm Treo 700p for a Pearl: the user interface. While RIM has jazzed up the hardware and feature set, there&#8217;s still way too much multiple clicking and menu opening for my taste.</p>
<p>But the Pearl is a beautiful piece of work, a very nice combination of hard-core email capability and fun features.</p>
