<p>Today, Google <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2012/04/spring-cleaning-in-spring.html">published</a> another &#8220;spring cleaning&#8221; list of products it is purging, but at this point it seems to be running low on clear and easy things to cut. For instance, patent search is now being included in regular search, with the same options plus some speed improvements. While any particular product&#8217;s death will probably piss off someone somewhere, this list doesn&#8217;t seem terribly controversial.</p>
<p>It includes:</p>
<ul>
<li>The non-starter <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110216/google-woos-publishers-with-payment-service/">One Pass program for publishers</a> that launched only a year ago</li>
<li>A toolbar to help browse content called Google Related that was <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/find-more-while-you-browse-with-google.html">introduced only last August</a></li>
<li>The Google Flu Vaccine Finder, a former &#8220;20 percent&#8221; project from 2009 that&#8217;s being passed onto HealthMap</li>
<li>Older software to support BlackBerry and Picasa, and the mobile web version of Google Talk</li>
</ul>
<p>Plus, this isn&#8217;t a product cut, but Google said it will move toward shorter &#8220;deprecation policies&#8221; for many APIs, meaning it will support older versions for less time.</p>

<p>Prior investors General Catalyst and Lowercase Capital also joined the round, which brings the company&#8217;s total funding to $10.4 million. Avalon&#8217;s Brady Bohrmann will join Backupify&#8217;s board.</p>
<p>I talked with CEO Rob May, who told me about his plan to accelerate marketing and adoption of Backupify by users of Google Apps, the search giant&#8217;s Web-based business suite of applications that is proving popular with businesses. So far, Backupify is being used to back up the files on 5,000 Google Apps domains. He says he would also like to offer Backupify for several other services that users have been requesting. In addition, May wants to boost Backupify&#8217;s visibility among the many third-party partners &#8212; like, say, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110727/google-apps-reseller-cloud-sherpas-grows-down-under/">Cloud Sherpas</a> &#8212; who work with businesses deploying Google Apps.</p>
<p>The outfit is growing fast. It has 175,000 users and stores 200 terabytes of data for its users, not just from Google apps, but also from Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, Blogger, and the Zoho Web-based office suite. One public customer is New York&#8217;s Museum of Modern Art, which uses Backupify to back up the Google Apps data generated by some 1,000 users. The data is all backed up to Amazon Web Services, but users can also download local copies of their data. </p>
<p>Why would you need to back up data that&#8217;s on a supposedly reliable cloud service? Because you might goof up &#8212; and delete something you didn&#8217;t mean to &#8212; just as easily in the cloud as on your PC. May says that roughly one-third of all data loss occurs because of user error. &#8220;We hear a lot of different things. When you delete something, Google assumes you meant to delete it. Sometimes things get deleted maliciously by a hacker, or someone who gets ahold of a password that wasn&#8217;t taken care of,&#8221; he says. &#8220;IT administrators want their own backup copy they can restore from. They trust Google not to lose it, but they don&#8217;t always trust their own users.&#8221;</p>
<p>Backupify&#8217;s $4.5 million A round was also led by Avalon and joined by General Catalyst and Lowercase Capital. Prior to that, First Round Capital led a $900,000 seed round, which was joined by Betaworks and several individual investors, including Chris Sacca and Jason Calacanis.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em>When Apple&#8217;s MobileMe service goes away in June 2012, what happens to the stuff I have stored on iDisk? Will Apple still store my material someplace else remotely on one of its servers that I can access via my laptop? Will I still have some sort of .Mac mail system that I can access when on the road and using a computer other than my own?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>Apple says it won&#8217;t continue to have the equivalent of the iDisk online storage system, accessible directly from the cloud, after MobileMe gives way to its new iCloud service. It advises iDisk users to copy their online files to their Macs or PCs before next June. However, it says the new service will still support mac.com and me.com email accounts, and they will still be accessible via the Web. It promises details later, but has in the meantime published a document answering common questions about the transition at <a href="http://apple.com/mobileme/transition.html">apple.com/mobileme/transition.html</a>.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> Is there a good program that will allow me to capture a Web video, especially a YouTube video, and convert it into an MP4 format file so I can play it on my Android-based Iconia tablet while offline on an airplane?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>There are numerous programs that claim to capture Web videos and convert them to formats such as MP4, which is a common and universal video file type. The ones I know about run on PCs or Macs, not directly on the tablets themselves, so you&#8217;d then have to connect your tablet to the computer and drag the files over. I can&#8217;t recommend one, as I haven&#8217;t tested any in years, but you can experiment by searching for &#8220;capture Web videos&#8221; or &#8220;convert Web videos.&#8221;</p>
<p>However, there&#8217;s a major caveat, a legal one. By my reading, YouTube&#8217;s Terms of Service generally bar such capturing, and other websites may do the same. I don&#8217;t advise grabbing Web videos unless their owners permit it. The YouTube rules say, in part: &#8220;You shall not download any content unless you see a &#8216;download&#8217; or similar link displayed by YouTube on the service for that content.&#8221;</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> What is a simple way to gather, edit and label a small collection of the pictures for an album (that might later be published in a photo book)?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>If you own a Mac, you can do this easily by importing your photos into the iPhoto program that Apple includes on every new computer, and which includes a feature that produces printed books you can buy. There are similar programs on Windows PCs, such as Picasa, which allows you to create albums and then, if you like, send them off to a variety of vendors to be made into a book. Or, from any computer, you can upload your photos directly to an online service like Shutterfly, at <a href="http://www.shutterfly.com">shutterfly.com</a>, which will organize them and optionally turn them into a printed book you can order.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As kids, we&#8217;re taught to share and share alike, and nowhere is this more clear than on Facebook, where some 600 million users share private details about their lives—and a lot of that sharing involves photos. People who once shared digital albums via photo-sharing websites now simply post those on Facebook for friends to see. </p>

<p>This week, I tested an effort by photo-sharing sites to win back users&#8217; attention: by importing photos from none other than Facebook, itself. With your permission, these sites access your Facebook page&#8217;s photos, as well as the pages of any friends who share their Facebook photos with you, and use these images to make photo albums—for online or for the coffee table. </p>
<p>I tested Shutterfly Inc.&#8217;s new Custom Path for making photo books, which produced a handsome book but didn&#8217;t link as smoothly as it should with Facebook. I also tried a beautiful new website called ZangZing that grabs and organizes images from a variety of social networks to create digital albums.</p>

<p>There are ups and downs to using photos from Facebook in this manner. The major advantage is you can access several people&#8217;s photos rather than relying on just your own photos to create an album or project. This means if you forgot a camera at your parents&#8217; 40th anniversary party, you may be able to use a friend&#8217;s photos to create a digital album or a photo book. And because photos shared on Facebook are often captured using smartphones and shared nowhere else but Facebook, they are then unique memories of the event.</p>
<p>On the negative side, Facebook downsizes photos before storing them on its website, so the quality isn&#8217;t that of the original digital file. This factors in when creating photo books. I planned to make a large photo book but had to choose a smaller one because the photos were too low resolution to be used as large, full-bleed images spread across a page; images from Facebook couldn&#8217;t be larger than 4-by-6-inches. If the photos imported from Facebook were captured on smartphones, the quality is already lower than that of a digital camera, though smartphone-camera technology is improving steadily. </p>
<p>I checked in with Google&#8217;s Picasa, Kodak Gallery, and Yahoo&#8217;s Flickr services to see if they were considering the idea of importing photos from Facebook. Each of these photo-sharing services already shares its albums out to Facebook—table stakes in the social-networking world. Of the three, only Kodak disclosed imminent plans to import photos from Facebook to its Kodak Gallery website; it will start this in late June. Kodak already lets people use in-store kiosks, like those in Target stores, to import images to albums from Facebook.</p>

<p>Shutterfly&#8217;s <a href="http://www.shutterfly.com/photo-books/custom-path">Custom Path</a> photo-book-making process automatically places photos onto book pages while allowing the book&#8217;s creator to tweak and adjust the book to a high degree. The books come in five options ranging from $13 for a 5-by-5-inch softcover book to $55 for a 12-by-12-inch hardcover book. Prices are currently marked at 20 percent off; adding pages will increase the price. I chose a 20-page, 8-by-8-inch book with a padded photo cover that cost $28 by the time I was finished with it (prices for this size book start at $20). </p>
<p>I skimmed through nine categories of book styles and several options within each category before deciding to create a photo-filled wedding guest book. Photos for the book can be added from one&#8217;s computer, a Shutterfly account, other people&#8217;s shared Shutterfly photos or Facebook. I chose photos from all of these sources and they dropped into a digital bin, showing me what I already had in the book so as not to grab the same photo twice from two sources.</p>
<p>I used Facebook Connect, a one-click option to enable my Shutterfly account to access my Facebook content and that of my friends, but it took me several tries to see the photos from Facebook. Shutterfly couldn&#8217;t replicate my problem and a spokeswoman thought it might be an issue with Facebook. It was fixed later in the day, but photos from Facebook still seemed sluggish to display on the screen.</p>
<p>Custom Path is easy to use but not easy enough. Text boxes are difficult to maneuver, and while some items can be taken away when you press Delete, others must be dragged off the screen. But once I figured out how to customize images and added stickers on pages, I could really make the page my own—not just another cookie-cutter pattern from Shutterfly. </p>
<p>ZangZing is a sharing site with a clean and easy-to-use user interface. It&#8217;s focused on the idea of creating digital albums by getting photos from all sorts of sources, including Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, Kodak Gallery, Picasa Web, Shutterfly, Photobucket, SmugMug or your own PC. I created albums with photos from five sources, and I enjoyed watching the elegant animations that illustrated the step of adding an image to an album. One click will add all photos from an album, or individual ones can be selected, and the images appear in a tray at the bottom of the screen. The site walks users through six steps to build an album, making the procedure feel transparent and uncomplicated. </p>
<p>The simplest part of using ZangZing was setting an album&#8217;s privacy permissions. I selected from Public, Hidden (anyone who knows the link to the album can see it), or Password. Too often, the process of sharing a digital photo album feels nerve-wracking because it&#8217;s hard to know if it will be shared with hundreds of people or too difficult for anyone to view. ZangZing&#8217;s emphasis on clarity shines here and throughout this sharing site. </p>
<p>Thanks to Shutterfly, ZangZing and other sites, creating a book or album to share doesn&#8217;t need to be restricted to your own photos. Rather than putting everything into your social networks, these sites let you take something out. </p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I have a 3GS iPhone. Is there a way to connect it to the Internet cable found in hotel and motel rooms?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>Not that I know of. But you can do this indirectly by creating your own Wi-Fi network from the wired connection in the room. There are two ways to do this.</p>
<p>One possibility is to carry a small portable router. These are small devices that plug into the wired connection and propagate a Wi-Fi signal in the hotel room that the iPhone (or other devices, like laptops and tablets) can use. A second option is to plug a laptop into the physical connection and use it as a Wi-Fi base station by setting up what&#8217;s called an &#8220;ad hoc&#8221; or computer-to-computer Wi-Fi connection. Steps for doing this, which can be a bit techie, differ depending on whether you use a PC or Mac.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I have been struggling with a hard drive space shortage for at least a year. I have deleted duplicate emails. I have deleted videos and word files and put them on a stand alone hard drive. Do you have any other suggestions? </em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> If you don&#8217;t want to, or can&#8217;t, replace your laptop, and don&#8217;t want to be tethered to your external hard disk, you might look into buying a new, larger, internal hard disk. </p>
<p>Many stores and consultants can sell and install larger hard disks, and even transfer the data from your old one.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I have thousands of photos on my computer and external hard drives. I&#8217;m in the process of trying to organize them on one hard drive and noticed that there are many duplicates between the different devices. Is there one program that you recommend that reliably detects and allows the removal of duplicate files?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> You might try using Google&#8217;s Picasa to sweep the drives, locate the photos, and display them. </p>
<p>The program has a feature that can avoid importing duplicates. Once imported, if there are still duplicates, Picasa offers methods to hide or actually delete them from your disk. Information on this is at <a href="http://bit.ly/8YKTzy">http://bit.ly/8YKTzy</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The average Facebook user has access to more than 100,000 photos taken of or shared by their friends, according to a sample taken by startup <a href="http://www.pixable.com/">Pixable</a>. But the only way to view them is by scrolling through albums or tabbing through tags of people.</p>

<p>So Pixable has endeavored to create a slideshow application called &#8220;<a href="http://apps.facebook.com/pixable/">Photofeed</a>&#8221; that gives users a way to search and sort through photos, and see which of them are most popular.</p>
<p>New York City-based Pixable&#8217;s secret sauce relies on users allowing its application deep access to their Facebook profiles, so it can look for factors like whether a user has historically &#8220;liked&#8221; a friend&#8217;s photos, whether they&#8217;ve attended events together, and whether they share a last name. Then it ranks and sorts photos into large-format slideshows.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2229" title="Pixablescreen" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/Pixablescreen-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Unfortunately, in my very brief usage so far, the Photofeed app was rather unpolished, but I do think there&#8217;s an interesting opportunity for someone to develop alternatives to the Facebook album format. However, I&#8217;d imagine Facebook itself would have a leg up if it built something natively.</p>
<p>Highland Capital-backed Pixable&#8211;which will de-emphasize previous photo-printing and video-creation products&#8211;may prove to have value as it extends Photofeed to other platforms, so that becomes a way to reminisce about photos scattered on various services and sites. But as Pixable CEO Inaki Berenguer points out, Facebook is the Internet&#8217;s photo juggernaut, with <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=403838582130">more than 100 million photos uploaded per day</a>. &#8220;Every month on Facebook you build a new Flickr or Picasa,&#8221; is how Berenguer put it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mark Zuckerberg <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2010/05/13/zuckerberg-privacy/">famously said</a>: &#8220;Having two identities for yourself is an example of a lack of integrity.&#8221;</p>
<p>Although he <a href="http://gigaom.com/2010/07/22/zuckerberg-people-will-always-want-to-keep-some-things-private/">later clarified</a>, &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t making a value judgment,&#8221; maintaining multiple identities, whether it&#8217;s as simple as publishing some photos to Picasa and others to Facebook, is becoming a big trend in online life.</p>
<p>Even as Zuckerberg&#8217;s Facebook extended its dominance in 2010 to the point where it seems to have a social Web monopoly, it was still a landmark year for social network competition.</p>

<p>Where in the past, tech industry watchers derided new start-ups for launching &#8220;yet another social network,&#8221; ever more users seem to be constructing multiple online presences that utilize the strengths of various platforms and networks.</p>
<p>And this splintered approach is only going to increase.</p>
<p>Internet users now have plenty of outlets for self-expression. They can prioritize individuality and choose to post on the highly customizable Tumblr, or instead value the comprehensiveness of a network and post on the blander Facebook.</p>
<p>A big part of this shift toward understanding the private online self versus the public online self has been the rise of Twitter. On Twitter, regular users make the sort of decisions celebrities do: What to share about their private lives with their public audience of followers.</p>
<p>Another shift has been the rise of smartphones, along with their quality broadband connections, good cameras and mobile apps.</p>
<p>As an early adopter of various social apps, I&#8217;ve recently been confronted with the choice of whether to post a picture taken with my Apple iPhone on-the-go to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Path or Picplz.</p>
<p>Each of them has different audiences, different associations with my personal or professional identities, and different expectations for how people will view and interact with my snapshot. (And I suppose there&#8217;s also the option of keeping the pictures to myself on my phone storage.)</p>
<p>Although the people noisiest about privacy on Facebook have at times been the media, publicity of the company&#8217;s highly confusing privacy settings seems to have led to many more people being aware of them and perhaps even changing them.</p>
<p>Perhaps that&#8217;s why I see an increasing&#8211;but still quite small&#8211;portion of my Facebook friends using pseudonyms on the service. And when I asked them why, I heard a variety of reasons.</p>
<p>One is a teacher, another prefers to go by the moniker he uses artistically. Yet another is a college student who is applying for jobs and who wants to be more anonymous for a while. Like many of today&#8217;s young people, she has become highly conscious of balancing the freedom to be herself online with the way she is perceived by professional contacts.</p>
<p>(A representative for Facebook declined to comment on whether the company has recently been more permissive about allowing pseudonyms, something it has traditionally frowned on.)</p>
<p>Of course, very little of what&#8217;s posted online can be trusted to never get out or never be linked to its originator. If you really want to keep your thoughts private and impermanent, of course, keep them in your head.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1887" title="Pathpic" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/Pathpic-208x300.jpg" alt="" width="208" height="300" />But there are now many more options for more private communication, many of them having first come out in 2010. They include small-group coordination tools like <a href="http://groupme.com/">GroupMe</a>, <a href="http://fastsociety.com/">Fast Society</a> and <a href="http://belugapods.com/">Beluga</a>. There&#8217;s also Path, a start-up from a former Facebooker that is <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101114/path-the-social-app-thats-not-viral-by-design/">perhaps too limited by design</a>, but is exploring the world of more intimate and personal communications.</p>
<p>For many people, their Facebook network is far from a direct match with their real-world friends, so it will be increasingly important to use these tools to dice circles up and make them more accessible. (Facebook is also trying to address that need with its own <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101006/now-showing-at-facebook-the-event/">Groups</a> tool.)</p>
<p>To be sure, that Facebook map of connections is a highly valuable asset, one the company has <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101112/would-facebook-email-gmail-google-me/">fiercely protected</a>, as Google reformulates its approach to the social Web.</p>
<p>Splitting your users into an entirely new social graph will certainly hamper growth. For instance, another early Facebooker launched <a href="http://www.jumo.com/">Jumo</a>, a social network for people connecting with nonprofits that seems to risk being redundant with, and isolated from, similar efforts on other platforms.</p>
<p>And Foursquare, despite its zeitgeisty innovation for sharing real-time location updates, has accumulated only about five million users in the last two years.</p>
<p>However, the speedy growth of new social networks like the addictive Instagram&#8211;which is like Twitter for pictures and got <a href="http://instagr.am/blog/3/instagram-one-million-users">one million users in its first two months</a>&#8211;shows that there&#8217;s still an opportunity to take an independent path.</p>
<p>What seems particularly notable about the current moment is that many people are evolving their approach to expressing themselves online, and they now have many tools and contexts to do so. And it&#8217;s up to them if these multiple identities will be unified anywhere except in their heads.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Taking photos is fun. Sorting and editing them is not.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve got 54,220 photos on my computer, including a few would-be National Geographic covers but far more out-of-focus portraits and poorly exposed sunsets that I&#8217;ve never bothered to fix or delete.</p>
<p>Thanks to plummeting prices on digital SLR cameras, amateurs like myself can now experiment freely with artistic shots, taking hundreds of photos without spending a small fortune in film. But those experiments generate a lot of homework by way of virtual stacks of photos in need of processing. </p>

<p>Adobe Systems Inc.&#8217;s (ADBE) Photoshop is famous for helping photographers extract the most out of their shots in a digital darkroom. But at $699, Photoshop costs as much as a new camera and takes a graduate course to master. Moreover, Photoshop was designed to edit a single photo at a time, not for sorting through a collection.</p>
<p>A new generation of software from Adobe and Apple Inc. (AAPL) has emerged to fill the gap between Photoshop and entry-level photo-management software like Apple Inc.&#8217;s iPhoto and Google Inc.&#8217;s (GOOG) Picasa. For people who have graduated from point-and-shoot cameras, Adobe&#8217;s Photoshop Lightroom 3 ($299) and Apple&#8217;s Aperture 3 ($199) offer tools to organize large collections and tackle the nitty-gritty of digital developing and re-touching.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing Lightroom (for Mac and PC) and Aperture (for Mac only) to organize, process and share photos I took at my friends&#8217; recent wedding. While both programs were designed with professional photographers in mind, I found they were effective at helping a hobbyist like myself whittle 400 photos to just 40 in less than an hour.</p>
<p>The programs also let me edit photos far beyond the basics of brightness and contrast. One shot moved from the reject to the favorites pile after Lightroom let me take advantage of my Canon camera&#8217;s advanced image format to boost the exposure of an image taken during a dimly lit reception.</p>
<p>Many professional photographers have a strong preference for one of the two programs. I preferred the overall aesthetic and photo-editing tools in Lightroom for extracting the best from my photos. Nonetheless, Aperture&#8217;s strengths lie in some nifty organizational tricks, and I would recommend it for people interested in three specific uses: upgrading from a large iPhoto collection; taking video with an SLR; or tagging photos with locations.</p>
<p>At their core, both Lightroom and Aperture are databases, but don&#8217;t let that scare away your inner Ansel Adams. </p>
<p>Lightroom&#8217;s database gives you tools to organize your photos into folders on your computer, create collections from across folders, and tag photos with keywords, star ratings, and other features. For people like me who are lazy about applying tags to describe photos, Lightroom offers a spray-can tool to virtually &#8220;paint&#8221; keywords on bunches of photos at one time. </p>

<p>Aperture&#8217;s approach to cataloging is borrowed from iPhoto. You put your photos into &#8220;projects&#8221; (known as &#8220;events&#8221; in iPhoto), which the software will suggest when you import images from your camera based on groups that were taken around the same time. You can also add keywords, ratings and other tags.</p>
<p>But Aperture has two more tricks up its sleeve. You can tag photos based on the people in them, using the same technology Apple built into iPhoto to recognize faces. While that&#8217;s a good idea, I found that Aperture (like iPhoto) didn&#8217;t do an ideal job at distinguishing faces, especially in profile.</p>
<p>Apple says the face-recognition function works best if you identify both a couple of front-on and profile photos for any person, and also let it finish going through your whole collection before using it.</p>
<p>More useful is Aperture&#8217;s ability to tag photos geographically. Some new cameras collect GPS data with each shot and Aperture charts that info with pins on a giant world map, making it fun to track a journey or search for all the photos taken in one place.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the majority of cameras don&#8217;t capture GPS data, but Aperture does offer some tools for adding in location data after the fact, such as importing it from a photo taken by an iPhone at the same site. Lightroom can also record GPS data for photos, but you have to work with third-party plug-ins to get the same functionality as in Aperture.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s in the digital darkroom that both programs earn their keep. The biggest reason an SLR-owner should upgrade beyond a basic photo editor is so he or she can work with so-called RAW files, sort of digital negatives that use extra data from the camera&#8217;s sensor to give you artistic control over factors like exposure long after you&#8217;ve shot the photo. Both programs work well with RAW, and moreover, editing photos on both programs is nondestructive, which means you can undo any changes you make—all the way back to your original photo—even after the photo has been saved. Sometimes the sky really can be too blue.</p>
<p>I found Lightroom&#8217;s editing features to be the most intuitive. It uses a three-paned screen clearly showing all of the available adjustments, your photo, and a history of the changes made to the image. I felt Aperture made me hunt for some of those features, but some users may prefer its optional floating palettes to Lightroom&#8217;s dense panels of options, and also its elegant system for brushing changes onto an image.</p>
<p>Lightroom boasts some cutting-edge editing features, such as the ability to adjust photos based on profiles of the lenses used to take them. That&#8217;s especially useful if you are working with a wide-angle lens that can distort images. With the click of a button, a warped wall at the edge of a wide-angle photo is made vertical again. The lens profiling wasn&#8217;t automatic with my older-model Canon SLR, but still worked.</p>
<p>To be sure, there are well-known Photoshop tricks that neither of these programs can do, such as stitching two or more photos together. They also can&#8217;t digitally cut your ex&#8217;s head out of photos. But if you really need to do that, finding the right photo-editing software is the least of your problems.</p>
<p>And to my disappointment, both programs are missing an increasingly popular service called HDR, or high dynamic range, where you merge photos taken at different levels of exposure into a new photo that takes the best aspects of them all. To make these sorts of images, you have to download external plugins. That&#8217;s the occasion I most missed Photoshop. </p>
<p>Finally, the programs both offer tools to showcase shots in professional-looking books and prints as well as on websites like Facebook and Flickr. Lightroom has the most options for producing Web galleries.</p>
<p>Aperture will appeal to users with cameras that do the newest trick in digtial SLR photography: take video. Such videos, which can feature beautiful photographic characteristics like short depth of field, can be imported and edited right in Aperture. The videos can be included in the software&#8217;s handsome mixed-media slideshows without the need for a separate video-editing program.</p>
<p>Either Lightroom or Aperture is a worthy upgrade for any semi-serious photographer. Both are available to download for free limited trials and I&#8217;d suggest testing the workflow of both before committing your photo collection.</p>

<p> Since Wi-Fi works all over the world, and all netbooks and laptops today that I&#8217;ve seen have Wi-Fi, and your needs are modest, any sub-$500 laptop or any netbook would do. If you want to connect when you&#8217;re not near a Wi-Fi hotspot, look for one with a built-in data modem that supports the GSM standard which works world-wide and with AT&#038;T (T) and T-Mobile in the United States. Make sure it covers all the various frequencies used overseas, not just those used in the U.S. Or, you could simply buy an external USB cellular data card that meets these criteria.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em></em></p>
<p> I just got my iPad and am wondering whether the more powerful iPad charger will work with my iPhone 3GS without damaging it, or whether the smaller charger that came with my iPhone will charge my iPad.</p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> According to Apple, the smaller iPhone charger will work with the iPad, although charging will be slower. I have tried this, and it works. As for the reverse case, Apple says you can also use the larger iPad charger with the iPhone, without harm, though it won&#8217;t charge the phone any faster.</p>

<p> I&#8217;d suggest you download the free Picasa desktop program for Windows, made by Google It will scour your computer for photos, allow you to organize them, and it includes an &#8220;experimental&#8221; features that hunts down duplicates so you can eliminate them.</p>

<p>&#8220;The Chinese government attaches great importance to protecting the safe flow of Internet information, actively guides people to manage Web sites in accordance with the law and use the Internet in a wholesome and correct way,&#8221; the paper reads. &#8220;The Decision of the National People&#8217;s Congress Standing Committee on Guarding Internet Security, Regulations on Telecommunications of the People&#8217;s Republic of China and Measures on the Administration of Internet Information Services stipulate that no organization or individual may produce, duplicate, announce or disseminate information having the following contents&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>What follows is a list so broad and vague it could easily be applied to nearly any speech Beijing finds undesirable: &#8220;subverting state power&#8230;propagating superstitious ideas&#8230;spreading rumors&#8230;and other contents forbidden by laws and administrative regulations.&#8221;</p>
<p>But steer clear of those and you’re free to say what you like because <a href="http://english.gov.cn/2010-06/08/content_1622956_5.htm">&#8220;Chinese citizens fully enjoy freedom of speech on the Internet&#8221;</a>&#8211;according to this white paper, anyway.</p>

Well, I guess that’s just the Chinese government “voicing its opinion” in this “vigorous online ideas exchange.”</p>

Which is what it intends to do with a new line of Internet-connected printers that can print documents emailed to them. </p>
<p>This week, HP (HPQ) is rolling out a new line of touchscreen printers with Web access and their own email addresses. The company’s pitch: If you can email it or store it in the cloud, you can print it. Email a document or photo to one of its new ePrint printers and the device will automatically print it.  Alternately, users can print Google Docs or Picasa photos directly from the cloud without using their desktop computers.</p>
<p>&#8220;What we believe is whereas in the old world where you had a PC and a printer and a driver, the new world is all about the Web-connected devices,&#8221; Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president of HP&#8217;s Imaging and Printing Group, said at a launch event yesterday. &#8220;This is all about how we can create that content and print anywhere, anytime. What we want to do is add cloud-aware capabilities to  our core printing business.”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Touch screens are now prevalent enough on mobile devices that I find myself touching the screens of every new gadget I see. My trusty index finger of a stylus is ready at all times to swipe, pinch, double tap and scroll since these are natural gestures. </p>

<p>Yet touch screens have some downsides. Finger gestures leave smudge marks on the glass screens and monopolize screen real estate, making it hard to show the screen to someone  while navigating. Also, touch screens often require two hands.</p>
<p>This week, I tested a smart phone with a solution for two of the three touch-screen problems. The Motorola Backflip (<a href="http://3.ly/Ku9">http://3.ly/Ku9</a>), which became available March 7, lets people navigate its screen by touching a panel behind it, thus keeping fingers off of the screen. This trackpad-like panel is appropriately named the Backtrack and works like magic: On-screen objects are selected, text scrolls and screens open, but you can&#8217;t see the fingers manipulating the screen because they&#8217;re hidden behind it. </p>
<p>The Backflip, which runs on AT&#038;T&#8217;s (T) 3G network, costs $100 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a two-year agreement. Its name comes from its design: The Backflip&#8217;s screen seems to flip backward when the QWERTY keyboard flips down for use. In the device&#8217;s &#8220;closed&#8221; position, the keyboard flips back up and is automatically turned off. </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been using the Motorola Backflip for emailing, Web browsing, social networking, taking photos and making phone calls. While I applaud its creative design and the idea of the Backtrack, I think it sacrifices functionality for form. Take, for example, its QWERTY keyboard, which has a subtly handsome design when the Backflip is closed. But when used for typing, its shallow keys don&#8217;t give much tactile feedback and are tough to use. Likewise, the Backtrack is clever, but only works when the phone is the flat, opened position, forcing people to reach around both the keyboard and the screen to use it. I often found myself giving up and just touching the screen directly, which also works.</p>
<p>Other companies&#8217; mobile devices have found ways around actually touching their touch screens, silly as it may sound. Palm&#8217;s (PALM) Pre and Pixi models use a gesture area beneath the screen to navigate—with just one hand holding and swiping.</p>

<p>I easily set up two email accounts and Twitter and Facebook accounts on my Backflip. There are also shortcuts for setting up accounts for Picasa, Photobucket, Bebo, LastFM and MySpace. </p>
<p>The Motorola Backflip runs Motoblur, the company&#8217;s social-network and message-consolidating software, which I found to be an attractive interface with intelligent capabilities. For instance, if it senses you&#8217;re checking it a lot, it will update the displayed messages more frequently. Motoblur also uses images from contacts, like their Facebook or Twitter photo, and displays these as small background icons behind Motoblur messages from that person. This is a small detail, but it brings an extra spark of life to everyday messages. </p>
<p>But Motoblur lacks one of the most popular Twitter functions: the ability to re-tweet, or re-message someone else&#8217;s tweet (Twitter status). A Motorola (MOT) representative said re-tweet is under evaluation, but won&#8217;t disclose details about timing. Motoblur has been available for six months, first seen in the Motorola CLIQ.</p>
<p>Oddly, the Backflip runs the Android 1.5 operating system, not the newest Android 2.1. A Motorola representative said the company plans to update this but wouldn&#8217;t say when. It seems strange for a brand-new device not to run the newest operating system.</p>
<p>Phone calls were clear and loud, and photos captured on the five-megapixel, flash, digital zoom camera looked great. I enjoyed using the Backflip&#8217;s bright, 3.1-inch screen with 320&#215;480 pixel resolution. Though I wasn&#8217;t crazy about typing on its keyboard, I did like the keyboard shortcut keys for the Web browser, home, email and search. With the Backflip in its opened position, I used the Backtrack—the trackpad behind the screen—to skip around from one thing to the next. Double tapping on anything selected it, and I swiped my fingers down on the Backtrack to scroll a long news story on the browser. </p>
<p>The Backflip is designed so that whenever it&#8217;s plugged into its wall charger or set at a 90-degree angle, it goes into Tabletop mode, showing a large digital clock with the local weather, date and options for setting an alarm. This mode also offers a button for watching the device&#8217;s photos in a slow-panning, Ken Burns-like slideshow, which is useful for sharing with friends.</p>
<p>Monthly AT&#038;T plans that work with the Backflip include a combination of the carrier&#8217;s required $30 unlimited data plan and a $40, $60 or $70 voice plan. It comes with a 2-gigabyte memory card, though it will work with one that holds up to 32 gigabytes. Its internal memory is 512 megabytes, and the memory available for apps is 220 megabytes, though certain apps can offload some data they use onto the roomier card.</p>
<p>Motorola deserves credit for trying an innovative design and for offering a unique way of moving fingers off of the touch screen. But the Backflip device seems unfinished because of several features that don&#8217;t work as well as they should. </p>

Web sites encourage people to &#8220;tweet&#8221; links to their articles via Twitter; photo-sharing sites nudge users to post albums on Facebook; and aggregators like TweetDeck display content from several social networks in a digestible way. Last week, Google Buzz joined this trend by integrating social networking into something people use every day: email.</p>

<p>Google Buzz (<a href="http://www.google.com/buzz">google.com/buzz</a>) is built into Gmail, Google&#8217;s email program, as an opt-in social network that provides people with a place for sharing status updates, Twitter tweets, photos, videos, Web links and blog posts with a network of friends. I&#8217;ve been testing Google Buzz, and I like the way it displays shared photos in full-screen view and nestles into Gmail, which I use every day. But right now, Buzz still falls flat.</p>
<p>One of the biggest problems with Buzz is that it&#8217;s late to the social-networking party. People have had years to get comfortable with networks like Facebook and Twitter, and old habits are hard to kick. Microsoft (MSFT) and Yahoo (YHOO) already incorporate social networking into their Web email in Windows Live Hotmail and the Yahoo Mail, respectively. Windows Live Hotmail lets users create networks of friends and connects with up to 69 other networks, including Facebook and Twitter. Yahoo also builds networks with your connections, and integrates content into email from sites like Twitter, Flickr and Picasa.</p>
<p>Google (GOOG) tried to catch up with existing social networks by using a proprietary algorithm to create networks of people with whom users communicate most in Gmail and in Google Chat, the company&#8217;s instant messaging program. In other words, the people you emailed the most via Gmail or chatted with the most on Google Chat automatically became the people you followed in your social network.</p>
<p>But Google took a lot of heat for these pre-made networks because people didn&#8217;t know where the names came from or who some of the people were. Even worse, these networks were made public by default so every Buzz user could see everyone else&#8217;s closest contacts. </p>

Google Buzz encourages social networking for Gmail users, but is it too late to join the fray?</div>
<p>This is a problem because many of us treat email differently than we treat our social networks. We communicate via email in private conversations—often with people who we don&#8217;t necessarily want looking at our personal photos or other information. If I exchange several emails over an extended period of time with my plumber about fixing a sink, it doesn&#8217;t mean I want him in my social network. Likewise if a parent regularly emails with a teacher about a child&#8217;s progress.</p>
<p>In the past several days, Google has apologized for its presumption that you would absolutely want to add the people you email into your social network online. The company has changed settings in Buzz to ameliorate this and several other issues. A network is now suggested rather than predetermined so users can clearly select whom they follow by checking boxes beside names and photos, nixing the plumber and keeping a best friend. Likewise, a very clear box now lets people opt to share these names publicly or not. </p>
<p>So how does the rest of Buzz work? All Gmail users will find a Buzz icon in the top left area of the Gmail site and must opt in to use Buzz. A tiny link at the bottom of every page can always turn it off altogether. Buzz is a separate screen and isn&#8217;t fully weaved into Gmail&#8217;s inbox, though notifications are sent to the Inbox in three instances: if someone comments on your post; if you comment on a post and then someone else makes an additional comment; and if someone directs a Buzz at you, such as starting a post with @Katie Boehret.</p>
<p>Buzz doesn&#8217;t yet have a way to completely stop notifications from coming to an inbox, but you can opt to stop receiving inbox notifications every time someone else comments about a post. (Go to &#8220;More Actions&#8221; within the email and select &#8220;Mute.&#8221;)</p>
<p>Google Buzz uses ideas from Facebook, like the ability to &#8220;like&#8221; a post. It also integrates with other Google properties including Blogger, Google Reader, Picasa and YouTube. Rather than using a system of friends like Facebook, Buzz takes a page from Twitter&#8217;s playbook by organizing friends into followers: people a user follows and people who follow the user. If you don&#8217;t want someone following you, just block them. </p>
<p>I spoke to Facebook about Buzz, asking specifically if the company would consider integrating with Google&#8217;s new program. A spokeswoman noted Facebook&#8217;s position as an open platform and said the company is always delighted to be working with new partners that want to integrate Facebook Connect in ways that help people connect with their &#8220;real&#8221; friends.</p>
<p>Buzz pulls in Twitter updates, or tweets, from people who have connected their Twitter and Buzz accounts. But the Twitter feed is only one way—coming into Buzz—so people can&#8217;t respond to or direct message back to Twitter. They can just leave a comment about the tweet on Buzz—a comment that is never displayed on Twitter. A Google representative said the company is working on more two-way integration in the future. </p>
<p>As for photo sharing, Buzz lets users integrate with Google-owned Picasa or Yahoo-owned Flickr so they can share on Buzz whatever photos are publicly shared within those services. Images show up in Buzz and, when selected, they take up the full browser screen—an eye-catching feature. But though users can browse Picasa albums from Buzz to select photos, they can&#8217;t share whole albums to Buzz right now.</p>
<p>Buzz is usable on the go with Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and Google&#8217;s Android phones. By default, it uses someone&#8217;s current location whenever posts are made on Buzz. But this can be turned off, albeit in a clumsy way: Currently, people must tap an &#8220;x&#8221; beside their location to remove this location information from a post. Later this week, this language will be made clearer with a bolded explanation on each screen before a post is sent of how to remove locations. If someone opts not to use location in one post, this setting sticks for subsequent posts—except when Buzz is accessed through a voice program.</p>
<p>Google Buzz got off to a rough start and still has a lot of catching up to do. Though it could be a convenience for people whose social contacts all already exist in Gmail, it could also saddle them—and their friends—with yet another social network to check every day. For now, my social-networking friends are sticking to Facebook and Twitter, making the buzz on Buzz almost inaudible.</p>

At an event at company headquarters today, Google announced  <a href="http://www.google.com/buzz">Google Buzz</a>, a new Twitteresque status update system for the email service that will allow users to share their everyday mundanities and inanities and follow those of selected contacts.</p>

<p><a href="http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/google-buzz-in-gmail.html">&#8220;A Google approach to sharing,&#8221;</a> Buzz is designed to, in the words of Bradley Horowitz, VP of Product Management, &#8220;find the signal in the social networking noise.&#8221; </p>
<p>The service exists within Gmail and promises to bring the social network that Google (GOOG) says always existed beneath the email service to the surface.</p>
<p>&#8220;The stream of social messages has become a torrent,&#8221; said Horowitz. &#8220;There is no way to parse that amount of information that ranges from the ridiculous to the sublime. We think this has become a Google-scale problem.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hence, Buzz.</p>
<p>Buzz taps into the torrent via the sort of feature set you’d expect: auto-following, which turns Gmail contact lists into social networks (which seems to me a horrifically bad idea; Like most folks, I imagine I have quite a few contacts I absolutely do <strong>NOT</strong> want to included in my social network); public and private sharing options; support of the &#8220;@ reply&#8221; feature popularized by Twitter; and a feature called &#8220;Recommended Buzz&#8221; that allows users to endorse updates they enjoy. The service also strives to make it easy to enhance those updates with content from other sites&#8211;Flickr, Picasa, YouTube and, yes, Twitter (no Facebook, though&#8211;yet). </p>
<p>Buzz, which launches Tuesday, is closely tied to Google&#8217;s mobile ambitions. It will debut in concert with a <a href="http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/02/introducing-google-buzz-for-mobile-see.html">Web app for Android and iPhone and an enhancement to Google Maps for Mobile</a> that will use GPS data to associate public Buzz content posted from mobile phones with location.</p>
<p>Google is the latest search company to try to graft social-networking features onto email service. Yahoo did it last year by adding  &#8220;status casting,&#8221; its variation on Twitter, to Yahoo Mail.  That feature has been mostly ignored since its debut. Perhaps Google&#8217;s effort will fare a bit better. It is, perhaps, the one company with enough heft and market power to reasonably take on Facebook. But it won’t be easy: Facebook has some 400 million unique users. Gmail, about 176 million.</p>
<p>Still, embrace and extend. Embrace and extend.</p>

The company will release Windows 7, a faster and much better operating system than the little-loved Windows Vista, which did a lot to harm both the company&#8217;s reputation, and the productivity and blood pressure of its users. PC makers will rush to flood physical and online stores with new computers pre-loaded with Windows 7, and to offer the software to Vista owners who wish to upgrade.</p>

<p>With Windows 7, PC users will at last have a strong, modern successor to the sturdy and familiar, but aged, Windows XP, which is still the most popular version of Windows, despite having come out in 2001. In the high-tech world, an eight-year-old operating system is the equivalent of a 20-year-old car. While XP works well for many people, it is relatively weak in areas such as security, networking and other features more important today than when XP was designed around 1999.</p>
<p>After using pre-release versions of Windows 7 for nine months, and intensively testing the final version for the past month on many different machines, I believe it is the best version of Windows Microsoft (MSFT) has produced. It&#8217;s a boost to productivity and a pleasure to use. Despite a few drawbacks, I can heartily recommend Windows 7 to mainstream consumers.</p>
<p>Like the new Snow Leopard operating system released in August by Microsoft&#8217;s archrival, Apple (AAPL), Windows 7 is much more of an evolutionary than a revolutionary product. Its main goal was to fix the flaws in Vista and to finally give Microsoft customers a reason to move up from XP. But Windows 7 is packed with features and tweaks that make using your computer an easier and more satisfying experience.</p>

<p>Windows 7 introduces real advances in organizing your programs and files, arranging your taskbar and desktop, and quickly viewing and launching the page or document you want, when you want it. It also has cool built-in touch-screen features.</p>
<p>It removes a lot of clutter. And it mostly banishes Vista&#8217;s main flaws—sluggishness; incompatibility with third-party software and hardware; heavy hardware requirements; and constant, annoying security warnings.</p>
<p>I tested Windows 7 on 11 different computers, ranging from tiny netbooks to standard laptops to a couple of big desktops. These included machines from Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Dell (DELL), Acer, Asus, Toshiba and Sony (SNE). I even successfully ran it on an Apple Macintosh laptop. On some of these machines, Windows 7 was pre-loaded. On others, I had to upgrade from an earlier version of Windows.</p>
<p>In most cases, the installation took 45 minutes or less, and the new operating system worked snappily and well. But, I did encounter some drawbacks and problems. On a couple of these machines, glacial start-up and reboot times reminded me of Vista. And, on a couple of others, after upgrading, key features like the display or touchpad didn&#8217;t work properly. Also, Windows 7 still requires add-on security software that has to be frequently updated. It&#8217;s tedious and painful to upgrade an existing computer from XP to 7, and the variety of editions in which Windows 7 is offered is confusing.</p>
<p>Finally, Microsoft has stripped Windows 7 of familiar built-in applications, such as email, photo organizing, address book, calendar and video-editing programs. These can be downloaded  free of charge, but they no longer come with the operating system, though some PC makers may choose to pre-load them.</p>
<p>In recent years, I, like many other reviewers, have argued that Apple&#8217;s Mac OS X operating system is much better than Windows. That&#8217;s no longer true. I still give the Mac OS a slight edge because it has a much easier and cheaper upgrade path; more built-in software programs; and far less vulnerability to viruses and other malicious software, which are overwhelmingly built to run on Windows.</p>
<p>Now, however, it&#8217;s much more of a toss-up between the two rivals. Windows 7 beats the Mac OS in some areas, such as better previews and navigation right from the taskbar, easier organization of open windows on the desktop and touch-screen capabilities. So Apple will have to scramble now that the gift of a flawed Vista has been replaced with a reliable, elegant version of Windows. </p>
<p>Here are some of the key features of Windows 7.</p>
<p><strong>New Taskbar: </strong>In Windows 7, the familiar taskbar has been reinvented and made taller. Instead of mainly being a place where icons of open windows temporarily appear, it now is a place where you can permanently &#8220;pin&#8221; the icons of frequently used programs anywhere along its length, and in any arrangement you choose. This is a concept borrowed from Apple&#8217;s similar feature, the Dock. But Windows 7 takes the concept further.</p>
<p>For each running program, hovering over its taskbar icon pops up a small preview screen showing a mini-view of that program. This preview idea was in Vista. But, in Windows 7, it has been expanded in several ways. Now, every open window in that program is included separately in the preview. If you mouse over a window in the preview screen, it appears at full size on your desktop and all other windows on the desktop become transparent—part of a feature called Aero Peek. Click on the window and it comes up, ready for use. You can even close windows from these previews, or play media in them.</p>
<p>I found this feature more natural and versatile than a similar feature in Snow Leopard called Dock Expose.</p>
<p>You can also use Aero Peek at any time to see your empty desktop, with open windows reduced to virtual panes of glass. To do this, you just hover over a small rectangle at the right edge of the taskbar.</p>
<p>Taskbar icons also provide Jump Lists—pop-up menus listing frequent actions or recent files used.</p>
<p><strong>Desktop organization: </strong>A feature called Snap allows you to expand windows to full-screen size by just dragging them to the top of the screen, or to half-screen size by dragging them to the left or right edges of the screen. Another called Shake allows you to make all other windows but the one you&#8217;re working on disappear by simply grabbing its title bar with the mouse and shaking it several times.</p>
<p><strong>File organization:</strong> In Windows Explorer, the left-hand column now includes a feature called Libraries. Each library—Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos—consolidates all files of those types regardless of which folder, or even which hard disk, they live in.</p>
<p><strong>Networking: </strong>Windows 7 still isn&#8217;t quite as natural at networking as I find the Mac to be, but it&#8217;s better than Vista. For instance, now you can see all available wireless networks by just clicking on an icon in the taskbar. A new feature called HomeGroups is supposed to let you share files more easily among Windows 7 PCs on your home network. In my tests, it worked, but not consistently, and it required typing in long, arcane passwords.</p>
<p><strong>Touch: </strong>Some of the same kinds of multitouch gestures made popular on the iPhone are now built into Windows 7. But these features won&#8217;t likely become popular for a while because to get the most out of them, a computer needs a special type of touch screen that goes beyond most of the ones existing now. I tested this on one such laptop, a Lenovo, and was able to move windows around, to resize and flip through photos, and more.</p>
<p><strong>Speed: </strong>In my tests, on every machine, Windows 7 ran swiftly and with far fewer of the delays typical in running Vista. All the laptops I tested resumed from sleep quickly and properly, unlike in Vista. Start-up and restart times were also improved. I chose six Windows 7 laptops from different makers to compare with a new MacBook Pro laptop. The Mac still started and restarted faster than most of the Windows 7 PCs. But the speed gap has narrowed considerably, and one of the Lenovos beat the Mac in restart time.</p>
<p><strong>Nagging: </strong>In the name of security, Vista put up nagging warnings about a wide variety of tasks, driving people crazy. In Windows 7, you can now set this system so it nags you only when things are happening that you consider really worth the nag. Also, Microsoft has consolidated most of the alerts from the lower-right system tray into one icon, and they seemed less frequent.</p>
<p><strong>Compatibility: </strong>I tried a wide variety of third-party software and all worked fine on every Windows 7 machine. These included Mozilla Firefox; Adobe (ADBE) Reader; Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Picasa and Chrome; and Apple&#8217;s iTunes and Safari. </p>
<p>I also tested several hardware devices, and, unlike Vista, Windows 7 handled all but one smoothly. These included a networked H-P printer, a Canon (CAJ) camera, an iPod nano, and at least five external flash drives and hard disks. The one failure was a Verizon (VZ) USB cellular modem. Microsoft says you don&#8217;t need external software to run these, but I found it was necessary, and even then had to use a trick I found on the Web to get it to work.</p>
<p><strong>System Requirements: </strong>Nearly all Vista PCs, and newer or beefier XP machines, should be able to run Windows 7 fine. Even the netbooks I tested ran it speedily, especially with the Starter Edition, which lacks some of the powerful graphics effects in the operating system. (Other netbooks will be able to run other editions.) </p>
<p>If you have a standard PC, called a 32-bit PC, you&#8217;ll need at least one gigabyte of memory, 16 gigabytes of free hard-disk space and a graphics system that can support Microsoft technologies called &#8220;DirectX 9 with WDDM 1.0.&#8221; You&#8217;ll also need a processor with a speed of at least one gigahertz. If you have a newer-style 64-bit PC, which can use more memory, you&#8217;ll need at least two gigabytes of memory and 20 gigabytes of free hard disk space. In either case, you should double the minimum memory specification.</p>

<p><strong>Installation, editions and price: </strong>There are four editions of Windows 7 of interest to consumers. One, a limited version called Starter, comes pre-loaded on netbooks. A second, called Professional, is mainly for people who need to tap remotely into company networks (check with your company to see if you need this). A third, called Ultimate, is mainly for techies who want every feature of all other editions. Most average consumers will want Home Premium, which costs $120 for upgrades.</p>
<p>The system for upgrading is complicated, but Vista owners can upgrade to the exactly comparable edition of Windows 7 while keeping all files, settings and programs in place.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, XP owners, the biggest body of Windows users, won&#8217;t be able to do that. They&#8217;ll have to wipe out their hard disks after backing up their files elsewhere, then install Windows 7, then restore their personal files, then re-install all their programs from the original CDs or downloaded installer files. Then, they have to install all the patches and upgrades to those programs from over the years.</p>
<p>Microsoft includes an Easy Transfer wizard to help with this, but it moves only personal files, not programs. This painful XP upgrade process is one of the worst things about Windows 7 and will likely drive many XP owners to either stick with what they&#8217;ve got or wait and buy a new one.</p>
<p>In my tests, both types of installations went OK, though the latter could take a long time.</p>
<p>Bottom line: Windows 7 is a very good, versatile operating system that should help Microsoft bury the memory of Vista and make PC users happy.</p>
<p>Correction: The edition of Microsoft&#8217;s Windows 7 operating system aimed at business users is called Windows 7 Professional. This week&#8217;s Personal Technology column erroneously stated it was named Business.</p>

At <a href="http://events.gigaom.com/mobilize/09/">GigaOM&#8217;s Mobilize 09 event</a> in San Francisco this morning, Sanjay Jha, Motorola&#8217;s co-CEO and CEO of the company&#8217;s handset division, uncrated the CLIQ, a device it describes unremarkably as the &#8220;first phone with social skills.&#8221;</p>
<p>Why? Well, the CLIQ, or DEXT as it will be confusingly branded in the U.K.,  incorporates Motorola&#8217;s new &#8220;MotoBlur&#8221; service, which essentially corrals Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Picasa, GMail and MS Exchange activity into a single feed and presents them on your phone.</p>
<p>In form, the CLIQ is a sideways slider. Like the Palm (PALM) Pre, the device boasts a full touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard. It’s got a 320 x 480-pixel, 3.1-inch HVGA screen and a five-megapixel camera. The CLIQ is video-capable (play, stream and capture) and supports the broad spectrum of media formats. It runs Android 1.5 (Cupcake), and Motorola (MOT) claims a battery life of six hours.</p>
<p>Jha says the phone is not intended to be a single iconic device&#8211;like, say, Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone. Rather, it is the first of a broad line of handsets, all running Android and Motoblur, that will be targeted at different customer segments around the world.</p>
<p>A wise strategy in the current market? Who knows? But at least it’s a step in the right direction. Motorola clearly needs to do something to right itself after the past few disastrous years. Hard to believe the company controlled 16.1 percent of the global handset market just two years ago. It’s market share today? A modest 6.5 percent. The CLIQ will be sold through T-Mobile in the United States.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The brightest spot for Windows PC makers in this awful economy has been the relatively new category of small, light, minimalist and cheap laptops called netbooks.</p>
<p>But there are some significant compromises for consumers who rely on netbooks, which typically sell for between $300 and $500, have screens of 8” or 10,” and weigh under three pounds. </p>

<p>Because their screens are not only small, but also tend to offer low resolution, they can’t show as much of a Web page, or document, as a normal laptop screen, so a lot of scrolling is required. Many have cramped, flimsy-feeling keyboards, and undersized touchpads with small, stiff buttons. And many have lousy battery life.</p>
<p>I’ve been testing a new netbook from Toshiba, the last major Windows brand to join the category in the U.S., but a company with long experience in making diminutive, albeit far costlier, laptops. And this new $400 Toshiba, inelegantly called the NB205-N310, stands out for solving some of these common netbook problems, including offering the best netbook keyboard I’ve tested.</p>
<p>The Toshiba shares most of the characteristics of competing netbooks. It has a 10” screen; uses the low-power Intel (INTC) Atom processor; sports a 160-gigabyte hard disk; and has a built-in Webcam. Like almost all netbooks, it runs the aging but familiar Windows XP Home operating system. Its one gigabyte of memory is sub-par for a standard laptop, but generous for a netbook. It has a decent complement of ports and connectors, including three USB ports, one of which can charge accessories like cellphones even while the PC is in sleep mode.</p>
<p>While not the smallest or lightest competitor on the shelf, the new Toshiba’s overall dimensions qualify it as a true netbook: it weighs 2.9 pounds, and is 10.4 inches wide, 7.6 inches deep, and an inch thick at its thinnest point. It fits nicely on the tray in a coach plane seat, and comes in a variety of colors.</p>
<p>But this machine breaks from the pack in several areas. First, it has by far the best keyboard I’ve seen in a netbook. The keyboard design resembles that on Apple’s (AAPL) MacBook Pro laptops —big, raised keys with lots of room in between, and good vertical movement. The space bar, and the “Enter” and “Backspace” keys are wide, and there are even dedicated “Page Up” and “Page Down” keys.</p>
<p>My only major gripe with this keyboard was a baffling decision to shrink the Tab key, which is heavily used to navigate forms on Web pages, to less than half the size of a normal letter key. It is so small I kept hitting the adjacent “Q” key until I got used to it. But, otherwise, this is a great netbook keyboard.</p>
<p>The company offers a model of the NB205 with a flat keyboard for $50 less, but I think the extra $50 is worth it.</p>
<p>The Toshiba’s second big plus is its touchpad and buttons. The pad itself is much roomier and easier to use than on any other netbook I’ve tested, a crucial benefit given that its typical low-resolution netbook screen, while bright and crisp, forces you to scroll a lot. (There’s a button that can zoom out, but I found it clumsy to use.) And the twin buttons, in stark contrast to those on many netbooks, are large and very responsive.</p>

<p>The third big plus on this new netbook is battery life, which I found to be outstanding. This model comes standard with one of those protruding, six-cell batteries, though it doesn’t stick out as far as some I’ve seen. Toshiba claims you can get up to an impressive nine hours and five minutes of life between charges. (There’s a $330 model with a battery Toshiba claims lasts just 3.5 hours.)</p>
<p>In my standard battery test, where I turn off all power-saving features, crank up the screen to full brightness, leave on the Wi-Fi, and play music continuously, the Toshiba NB205-N310 lasted a whopping six hours and 32 minutes. That means you would likely top eight hours, and maybe approach Toshiba’s claim, in a more normal usage pattern.</p>
<p>The machine properly handled a variety of common programs I tested, including Microsoft Office (MSFT), Firefox, iTunes, Picasa and the TweetDeck program for using Twitter.</p>
<p>But there were some drawbacks. One was performance. Streaming of Web videos stuttered a bit more often than I would have liked. Wi-Fi speed was noticeably less than what I get on a standard Windows laptop. </p>
<p>Startup and reboot speeds were very slow. With one Word document open, two Web sites open in Firefox and iTunes playing a song, it took the Toshiba over two minutes to reboot, compared to about a minute and a half on my last-generation Acer Aspire One netbook running the same things. Starting up cold also took about 30 seconds longer than on the Acer.</p>
<p>This may be because Toshiba has loaded the machine with software many people won’t use, including the Skype communications program and a networking utility that duplicates some of Windows’ built-in functions. Also, the speakers are feeble, even for a netbook.</p>
<p>Still, Toshiba has advanced the netbook category in key respects.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. But it never hurts to try. This week, I tested the T-Mobile myTouch 3G with Google (GOOG), which is the company’s second chance at introducing a “Google phone” to the masses.</p>
<p>Google’s first device, called the T-Mobile G1, came out in October and was less than a sensation. The phone had a touch screen and a handy slide-out physical keyboard, but it was bulky and unattractive. It came with just one gigabyte of memory and lacked important features like compatibility with Microsoft Exchange for use with work email. Its app store, called the Android Market, offered only about 50 applications. The G1 launched with surprisingly few accessories.</p>

<p>The $200 (with two-year contract) T-Mobile myTouch 3G (t-mobilemytouch.com) available Aug. 5, has fixed many of these problems. Its new design uses an on-screen keyboard, which gives it a thinner, more stylish build that feels great in the hand. It now comes with four gigabytes of memory, works with Microsoft Exchange and can record and play back video footage. The Android Market has increased its number of apps to about 6,300, and the myTouch will hit stores with accessories like designer shells and docking stations. Its combined voice and data plans are at least $25 less per month than what AT&#038;T’s (T) plans cost for users of Apple’s competing iPhone.</p>
<p>But while using it, I couldn’t help thinking that the myTouch felt less like a new device and more like what the G1 should have been in the first place.</p>
<p>The myTouch, which is built by HTC of Taiwan, runs on an improved version of Google’s operating system, that performs tasks faster has a more streamlined look and supports stereo Bluetooth connections. But it carries on many traits of its predecessor. It still synchronizes over the air with Google account information including email, calendar and contacts. Swiping a finger to the left or right on the myTouch’s home screen will still open other screens, with space for icons representing apps. And its handy window-shade-like Notifications menu can still be pulled down onto the screen at any time to show a list of new messages.</p>
<p>The most dramatic difference on the myTouch is its on-screen keyboard, which may frustrate some people who liked the G1 for its because it had a physical keyboard and a touch screen. Like on Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, the myTouch keyboard corrects words as you type, recognizing you’ll make more mistakes on it than you would on a physical keyboard. The keyboard suggests words in a horizontal bar that appears above the keyboard and below the text area. You need only type “Washi” and the word “Washington” appears in this bar for you to select. These shortcuts speed up the otherwise frustrating process of on-screen typing.</p>
<p>Unlike on the iPhone, the myTouch keyboard’s keys don’t get larger as your finger hovers over them so as to help you touch the right key. Nor does a word become magnified when you’re trying to place the cursor at a certain spot. The myTouch’s trackball can be used to pinpoint a specific letter but I usually forgot all about the trackball, opting to use the responsive touch screen for navigation.</p>
<p>T-Mobile offers much less expensive monthly plans for the myTouch than AT&#038;T offers for the iPhone. The cheapest voice and data plan from T-Mobile costs $55 compared with AT&#038;T’s $70. Unlimited data and messaging plus minimum voice plans total $65 for T-Mobile and $90 for AT&#038;T. And AT&#038;T’s messaging is currently limited to text, while T-Mobile messaging includes text, picture and video.</p>
<p>On the other hand, T-Mobile offers 3G coverage in far fewer cities than AT&#038;T. The myTouch comes with only a fourth of the built-in memory of the same-priced the 3GS iPhone, and half the memory of the 3G iPhone model, which is costs half the price. And myTouch offers only about a tenth of the apps the iPhone offers, and has a smaller screen.</p>

<p>T-Mobile wants myTouch users to understand apps and download them, starting with the AppPack: a package of eight to 10 apps that T-Mobile will send to myTouch customers via an SMS with a link. Customers can peruse this list of apps and download just the ones they choose. While some people may not appreciate receiving apps suggestions, it could also introduce apps to people who didn’t know how they worked.</p>
<p>The Android Market, where all apps for Google’s phones can be found and purchased,still isn’t as well organized as it should be. It separates games from other applications and organizes them by popularity and date, but doesn’t separate those that are free and those that must be bought. I downloaded several free apps including WordGame, Facebook, Twitter, Sketch-a-Etch and Sherpa. But I was especially irked by the way some of the apps I downloaded kept trying to get me to download additional apps every time I opened them. The Twitter app, which was listed as one of the most popular, displayed prompts to download browsers and RSS readers—even six days after I first used the app. An on-screen message gave me the option to “Ignore Forever,” but this apparently didn’t include prompts to download other programs. Any user would be confused and irritated by these unsolicited messages. Google said that was what the developer chose to do—a major downside to the Android’s open model.</p>
<p>The myTouch’s 3.2-megapixel camera and video camera worked well and started up quickly. An icon labeled Gallery neatly holds still images and videos. And the myTouch has simple ways to upload photos to Picasa or videos to YouTube.</p>
<p>A built-in tool for Google Web searches using voice commands worked remarkably well, even when I tried to trip it up by saying four words at once. It didn’t recognize my last name, but I’ll let it off the hook since it’s spelled differently than it sounds.</p>
<p>The T-Mobile myTouch 3G costs $50 more than the G1, but its extra features are worthwhile. Be ready for a frustrating first-time experience with the on-screen keyboard and try to read user comments in the Android Market to figure out which apps prompt you to download additional programs. </p>
<p>The myTouch is what we expected from Google the first time around. Time will tell if people are ready to give it a second chance.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It’s hard to maintain a monogamous relationship with one photo-sharing Web site. You will sign up with a service and use it as your primary online repository for a while. You may even familiarize friends and family with that service so they expect to see your name associated with it in emails. But before long, other sites with flashier features will entice you to start spending time with them while you continue to maintain your accounts on the old site so you don’t lose your digital memories. Can’t they all just get along in one place?  </p>
<p>This week, I tested <a href="http://www.thisMoment.com">thisMoment.com</a>—a content-sharing Web site that doesn’t mind if you use multiple sharing sites. It acknowledges your accounts on other sites and the fact that you have probably loaded a bunch of photos or videos onto those sites. It even recognizes that you likely still want to remain connected to those services. In fact, thisMoment is made better by your relationships with these other sites. And the service also makes it easy to incorporate into your account material created by others—even strangers.</p>

<p>Anyone can use thisMoment.com the old-fashioned way, by uploading personal content and building “moments” (collections of related content) to share with friends. But thanks to thisMoment’s ties to other sharing sites, users may opt to add others’ publicly shared materials like videos, photos and articles to a moment, making it richer and more interesting. This content can come from sources like Flickr, Picasa, YouTube, Facebook—even Life Magazine photos and MTV videos can be interspersed throughout a moment. The Moment Maker tool quickly scans sites for relevant content to add to the moment.</p>
<p>This week, the service introduced an iPhone app for making moments on the go and a Facebook app for creating moments within Facebook. I tried both, in addition to using the thisMoment.com site, and found that resulting moments looked like they took a lot more time and effort to make than they actually did. </p>
<p>ThisMoment’s secret sauce is in its elegant displays. It takes all sorts of content—text, photos, videos—from various sources and meshes it into a handsome slideshow that flows from one visual to the next. Black backgrounds dramatically frame photos and videos, and captions stand out in brightly colored text. Maps from Google (GOOG) pinpoint exactly where the moment took place and a list names other people who were in the moment.</p>
<p>And when you’re all done creating your moment, thisMoment doesn’t mind sharing your final project with others using still more social-networking tools like Twitter, Facebook and some 45 Web publishing sites—if your privacy settings are set for sharing.</p>
<p>For some people, the idea of integrating other online content into their personal moments could be a turn-off. I wasn’t initially sure I would want someone else’s content mixed in with photos and videos I took, or vice versa. And I still wish thisMoment provided a clearer way of differentiating between someone’s personal content and that which was pulled from the Web. (Currently, small print below each item tells where it came from.) </p>
<p>But there’s so much content online that it makes sense to tap these resources. And users can opt to make moments without external content. </p>

<p>Rather than just slapping photos on to a Web site where people can see them, thisMoment asks its users to check off descriptive words—or enter their own—to explain how the moment made them feel. Though I originally scoffed at these add-your-own emotions, I later grew to like them when I looked back at my moments and those created by other people. They give these online creations a personal touch that isn’t conveyed in other photo-sharing software programs or Web sites. </p>
<p>Another thisMoment differentiator is its sense of time. You can create moments for things that happen in the past, present or future, like an upcoming wedding or birth, and a timeline at the top of the Web site shows where these moments fit in, according to their dates. If you share a moment with someone who is labeled as being in that moment, she can “seize” the moment, adding it to her own timeline. ThisMoment also encourages you to rate your moments on a scale of small to big according to how much they matter to you, though I often forgot to do this, and to label your moments so they can be organized into different categories.</p>
<p>I soon got the hang of how to use thisMoment to supplement my moments when I didn’t have enough content to create something worth sharing. When I attended a folk rock concert at the Embassy of the Czech Republic here in Washington, D.C., I only captured a few so-so photographs and wouldn’t have otherwise shared any visual memories from the evening with friends. But I used the Moment Maker to troll the Web for content related to Czechomor, the band I saw, and found live concert videos, as well as professional photographs, an online biography of the band and a link to where the group’s album was sold on Amazon.com (AMZN). I used this content and one of my own photos, and made a simple moment in a few minutes. (<a href="http://www.thismoment.com/moment/view/31474/czech-embassy-concert">Check out my moment</a>.)  </p>
<p>Likewise, friends of mine recently hosted a murder-mystery dinner, but we were so busy staying in character that we took only one photo of the entire evening. I used that photo of me and my costumed friends as the inspiration for creating a moment filled with photos and videos of murder-mystery dinners from all over. This content came from sites like Photobucket, Picasa, Flickr and YouTube, and I laughed at the number of people who wore stick-on moustaches in these photos.</p>
<p>ThisMoment allows anyone with whom you share a moment to see that moment without signing up for the service. If that person is included in the moment, meaning the creator labeled him or her as a person who participated in the moment, then that person can add his or her own content to the moment—as long as that person signs up as a member of the site. </p>
<p>A variety of privacy options let you restrict who can see your moments—just you, friends, family, people in the moment or everyone. If a moment is set so everyone can see it, they can also use your content in their moments. </p>
<p>You may not always want to use thisMoment to incorporate content from other services and Web sites. But even without outside influences, this service’s stunning visual displays will give your moments a polished look that makes you proud to share. </p>

<li> His Digital SLR is the Canon (CAJ) 5D Mark 2: He likes. Also, here&#8217;s a new camera from Panasonic (PC). It goes underwater and shoots in HD. Now, this! A Casio, Exilim FC100, which shoots up to 1000 FPS&#8211;watch water drop, one drop at a time.</li>
<li> Now: A GPS system that automatically transmits to satellite. OK, <em>now a water-purifying straw! Its an &#8220;Istraw&#8221; that freaking purifies your water all on its own. Amazing. </em></li>
<li> If that&#8217;s not enough for you, says Harper (insert an editorial &#8220;Uh&#8230;&#8221;), it&#8217;s a flashlight/alarm/smoke detector, from Flare Safe. Even more amazing!</li>
<li> &#8220;Astro&#8221; Dog Collar: It has GPS so you can keep track of your dog. That&#8217;s pretty handy. From Garmin (GRMN).</li>
<li> Portable radio: AM/FM/HD. Walt: I think radio sucks in general.</li>
<li>Harper: Now this doohickey you wear maybe/probably around your neck at the beach registers how much UV you are exposed to. Walt: If you wear this, you won&#8217;t get laid. Harper: Maybe <em>you</em>!</li>
<li> Breathalyzer/Bad Breath Monitor: Also a music/video player. It detects bad breath if you blow on it. Listen, I prefer the old fashioned method: someone awkwardly handing me a breath mint. That&#8217;s the natural way.</li>

<li> Sony OLED music player: Has noise cancellation&#8211;built in; it&#8217;s digital noise cancellation. Also has Slacker, which is &#8220;Tivo for music.&#8221; Walt: Slacker&#8217;s on BlackBerry too. And, do you think this will take over the market iPod dominates? Harper: Heh heh, it&#8217;s an interesting product. (Translation: No.)</li>
<li> A pocket-projector, the PK 101 from Optoma: Very cute. You can use it when you&#8217;re sitting on the plane on the back of the seat of the person in front of you.</li>
<li> And now: A Chinese knock-off of Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone. Typical Chinese. But instead, it says &#8220;Welcome&#8221; upon loading. Imagine that! Look, the UI is so terribly different! It has mode-switching, which means it too has a built-in video projector. Did the Chinese steal the blueprints for the next-gen iPhone somehow?</li>
<li> Some funky looking mask: For diving, it&#8217;s good to up to 100-plus feet. There&#8217;s a built-in camera with HD video. Walt: And how scared were the TSA guys? Audience laughter.</li>
<li> Whoa! Harper has some super-spy illegal device that can automatically shut off everyone else&#8217;s cellphones. It&#8217;s like something out of &#8220;Men In Black,&#8221; but for cellphones instead of depressed housewives.</li>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s no other major item most of us own that is as confusing, unpredictable and unreliable as our personal computers. Everybody has questions about them, and we aim to help.</p>
<p>Here are a few questions about computers I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</p>

<p class="question">I switched from PC to Mac a year ago, but now I am thinking of adding a Windows laptop. If I do, what kind of compatibility problem would I have? I would be using the laptop mostly to write, to send/receive email and to Web browse.</p>
<p> In the old days, there were compatibility problems, but most of those have gone away. Based on your simple predicted usage, I&#8217;d say that you should be fine. For instance, both Macs and PCs can interchangeably open and edit all of the major file types &#8212; JPG pictures, MP3 music, Microsoft Office documents, Adobe PDF files, etc. Email and instant messages can, of course, be exchanged between the two platforms, even if you are using different programs. And Macs understand Windows file extensions. Also, you can use both platforms simultaneously on the same home network to access the Internet.</p>
<p>In some cases, you might need different programs to open the same files on the two platforms. But even that obstacle has greatly diminished. For instance, programs like the Firefox and Safari Web browsers, Adobe Reader, iTunes, Microsoft Office, Google Earth, Picasa, Photoshop and many others come in native versions for both platforms that can handle the same files. And, of course, Web-based programs like Gmail and Yahoo Mail work on both. Sometimes, the same programs have different features and user interfaces on Windows and Macs, but I haven&#8217;t found these differences hard to master.</p>
<p>The biggest problems for average users are Quicken, whose Mac version is inferior and incompatible; Internet Explorer, which is no longer made for the Mac; and Microsoft Outlook, which is replaced on the Mac by a program called Entourage that is similar but uses a different file format. And networking can be tricky. In general, the Mac does a better job of seeing Windows PCs on a network than Windows does of seeing Macs.</p>
<p class="question">I use Outlook Express for my email, and I store a lot of mail in local folders. Is there a simple way to back these up? If I buy a new computer, can they be transferred?</p>
<p> Yes. There are two methods. One is a manual method, which Microsoft explains in a detailed document at this Web site: <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/kb/270670">support.microsoft.com/kb/270670</a>.</p>
<p>The other, quicker, method is to obtain one of several utility programs that can back up your Outlook Express data and, in some cases, allow you to transfer it to another PC. I haven&#8217;t tested these in years, and thus can&#8217;t recommend one over another. But one example is a free program called Outlook Express Backup, which can be found at <a href="http://genie-soft.com/products/oeb">genie-soft.com/products/oeb</a>. Another is a $40 program called Outlook Express Backup Wizard, which can be found at: <a href="http://outlook-express-backup.com">outlook-express-backup.com</a>.</p>
<p class="question">Do you know of an iPhone GPS application that speaks directions? It would make the iPhone similar to a TomTom or Garvin GPS unit.</p>
<p>A: No, but Apple recently announced that, under its new 3.0 operating system for the iPhone, such programs will be possible. Several companies are believed to be working on them, and I expect them to be available later in the year. The reason none exist yet is partly legal, having to do with the licensing of the underlying maps.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Like many people today, I keep a lot of my important documents and communications in digital form. But I still print out the files and put them on my desk so I can have them in front of me instead of buried in computer subfolders within folders.</p>
<p>This week, I tested BumpTop, a program that displays items in a way that makes programs and files easy to see and open. It does this by turning your digital desktop into a three-dimensional environment that looks like your physical desktop. A few quick gestures neatly stack piles of items or tack important items onto one of four virtual walls. You can even flick your mouse to &#8220;toss&#8221; files to programs or group files into a pile, like stacking all your PDF files together. Special photo frames on the walls show slideshows of photos from PC folders or feeds from photo Web sites like Flickr or Picasa.</p>

<p>BumpTop comes from Toronto-based Bump Technologies Inc. and it has been in a private testing stage for a little over a year. Starting Wednesday, it&#8217;s available for anyone to download at <a href="http://bumptop.com" rel="external">BumpTop.com</a>. It comes in a free or $29 Pro version. In Pro, files you use most often will grow bigger over time and you can flip through a pile&#8217;s contents by rolling the mouse&#8217;s scroll wheel, among other things.</p>
<p>I used BumpTop Pro for over two weeks and tried it on four computers running three different Windows operating systems: XP, Vista, and the prerelease version of Windows 7. BumpTop says it hopes to develop a Mac version in the future. (It should work on Parallels, a program that runs Windows virtually on a Mac, according to Bump Technologies, but not on Fusion, a similar program.)</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Good-Looking Display</h5>
<p>This program is a real looker. When I showed it to friends, they immediately wanted to play with it, dragging pictures to pin on virtual walls and drawing circles around several icons at once to stack them into piles like magic. And when you toss files to certain programs, they perform functions. A Microsoft Word document tossed to the email icon generates an email with the document attached. Photos I tossed to the Facebook icon were posted on the social-networking site. Files can be tossed to a printer, the recycle bin, other piles and, in the Pro version, attached USB drives.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Program Switch</h5>
<p>But as much as I liked BumpTop, I kept coming back to the same conclusion: It was fun while I was using it, but I wasn&#8217;t naturally inclined to leave the program I was using &#8212; like my email program, my browser or TweetDeck &#8212; just to do something on the desktop in a more visually pleasing way. And since the computer&#8217;s desktop has never been as functional as popular programs, it&#8217;s hard to expect people to spend a lot of time there.</p>

<p>Also, while BumpTop introduces a new, attractive user interface to the desktop, its 3-D functionality doesn&#8217;t extend throughout the whole computer, so you find yourself jumping back and forth between different ways of doing things.</p>
<p>BumpTop requires a computer with 3-D graphics and drivers, which older machines won&#8217;t have. Just for kicks I installed BumpTop on my older XP machine, which didn&#8217;t have the necessary requirements, and sure enough, it ran slowly and didn&#8217;t represent programs like Microsoft Outlook (MSFT) and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox with the correct icons. Specific system requirements for BumpTop, along with a list of what the Pro version has that the free version lacks, can be found at BumpTop.com/download.</p>
<p>BumpTop&#8217;s point of view is like looking down from the ceiling in a room with four walls. It installs with three picture frames on its walls, and these display content from three sources: your computer&#8217;s My Pictures folder, Flickr.com&#8217;s main photo feed and a Flickr feed of photos Bump Technologies chose. You can change the images in settings, or delete the frames altogether.</p>
<p>The picture frames show ever-changing slideshows, and to do this, they only load low-resolution thumbnails of the images they display. This looks good when you&#8217;re quickly glancing at BumpTop, but if you double-click on a frame to zoom in, you&#8217;ll see a blurry photo. Bump Technologies says it plans to improve this where possible. Any photos on BumpTop other than those displayed in frames are visible in high resolution when you zoom in.</p>
<p>BumpTop loads with icons representing Twitter, Facebook and Email pinned to its right wall. And you can add your printer to the wall and toss things to it, printing them immediately.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wall Clingers</h5>
<p>The small visual details built into BumpTop make it a pleasure to use. Every time you open something, its representative icon hurls toward you in 3-D as if it were thrown. Items that are pinned to a wall flip end over end and playfully cling to the wall surface like a starfish with sticky, suction feet.</p>
<p>Special mouse movements generate on-screen options for organizing your BumpTop. Lassoing multiple images by drawing a line around them with your mouse pulls up a pie menu with options like &#8220;Grow,&#8221; &#8220;Shrink&#8221; and &#8220;Grid.&#8221; A &#8220;Pile by Type&#8221; option can organize all or just some of your desktop icons into piles arranged by similar characteristics, which by itself could be a big help.</p>
<p>Searching for something on your desktop isn&#8217;t a hassle anymore. Any time BumpTop is open, you can start typing and the program will search names of all items in BumpTop for results with the text you&#8217;re typing; those that match your request will glow.</p>
<p>I tried BumpTop on a touch-screen PC running Windows 7 &#8212; the HP TouchSmart PC &#8212; and the feeling of reaching out and tossing things around with my finger was even more enjoyable than using the mouse. As touch-screen PCs become more popular, BumpTop and programs like it will fit in more naturally.</p>
<p>If you miss seeing the photo that was on your regular desktop, an adjustment in Settings lets you use your Windows background on the BumpTop floor. Images can be assigned to each of the four walls; I assigned a photo of the National Mall at night to my back wall and a photo of my favorite lighthouse to my floor.</p>
<p>BumpTop is a pleasure to use and for no cost, the free version is certainly worth a try. If you like what you see and you&#8217;re willing to change the way you use your desktop, the Pro version might be worthwhile. Just be sure your computer has the correct specifications and be ready for blurry close-ups of the picture frames.</p>
