The Federal Bureau of Investigation shut down Thursday one of the world’s most popular file-sharing websites, MegaUpload.com, and announced the arrest of four of the people behind it in a global crackdown against the suspected online pirates.

The move came a day after Washington lawmakers were besieged by complaints about legislation designed to crack down on the online sharing of pirated copies of music, movies and other material, people familiar with the matter said.

Many lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee expressed support Wednesday for new legislation aimed at cutting off funding to foreign websites offering pirated movies or counterfeit goods, despite opposition from Silicon Valley companies.

At a hearing, the committee debated the Stop Online Piracy Act, which would give the U.S. attorney general new authority to shut down U.S. financial support to “rogue” foreign websites that sell pirated movies, music or other counterfeit goods. The Justice Department could ask for a court order to compel U.S. search engines and other sites to block domain names or search results.

Internet users who share pirated movies and music online may soon be getting an unpleasant surprise: Warnings from their cable and phone providers that detail alleged copyright infringement and threaten to slow their Web connections if they don’t stop.

The new so-called Copyright Alert System was created by a coalition of major film studios, record labels and Internet-service providers, who agreed to guidelines for identifying and notifying Web users who violate copyrights.

Among the ISPs that have pledged to implement the new policy are Comcast Corp., AT&T Inc., Time Warner Cable Inc., Cablevision Systems Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc.
