It is saying a lot about this video that the CGI news wizards at Next Media Animation have produced a doozy.

It’s based on a report by Forbes.com, which asked the two largest pest exterminators, Orkin and Terminix, in the U.S. to pick the cities with the worst infestations of bedbugs.

Those would be New York, Chicago, Detroit, Columbus and Cincinnati.

And how NMA decided to illustrate it, well, you might look at deep-dish pizza a little differently after seeing it.

Enjoy:

Tonight at 9 pm, ABC is premiering a television show that all you computer potatoes need to see: “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.”

Oliver, a well-known chef from Britain, is taking his war against unhealthy eating habits to American shores, starting in West Virginia. The U.S. is suffering from an obesity epidemic and he aims to stop it, one pizza for breakfast at a time.

The scene of kids in a classroom thinking a tomato is a potato and school bureaucrats calling french fries a vegetable is really rivetingly sad.

Oliver won this year’s TED Prize at the high-profile conference–you can add your name to his online petition here to “save cooking and improve school food.”

You can also watch the show online here.

Here’s the video of his speech at TED, as well as the trailer for “Food Revolution”:

Last night, BoomTown went to a lovely party thrown by David Hornik, the August Capital VC who also runs The Lobby conference in his spare time.

He threw the event because those who attend the annual invitation-only gathering in Hawaii wanted to get together again during the year in Silicon Valley for even more schmoozing.

I went to the first Lobby in the fall of 2007 (you can see my video of that below too), so Hornik let me in to have some pizza and beer at August’s offices on Sand Hill Road and use my Flip video to ask those in attendance where they thought the digital sector was in terms of the economy and innovation.

So here’s Hornik, angel investor Brett Bullington (who is also in the 2007 video, but in shorts) and BillShrink’s Peter Pham, as well a merger of MINIs.

Here’s the video (with my 2007 one below it):

Microsoft’s new search engine Bing–which debuted at our D7 conference last week–unexpectedly went live this morning ahead of its scheduled June 3 launch date and it’s already done much to distinguish itself from Microsoft’s previous efforts in search.

Certainly, there’s far more verb potential in Bing than “Microsoft Live Search,” the service it’s replacing. And–beyond all this silliness about Bing’s prowess in adult entertainment queries (ever tried a similar search in Google (GOOG) or Yahoo (YHOO)?)–there’s a lot to impress. Bing is fast–very fast, actually. Its local results are robust, accurate and usable.

This search for “pizza near 94117,” for example, returns not just a list of pizza parlor homepages, but phone numbers, directions, reviews, coupons and bird’s eye maps as well. Video search is deep and the ability to further calibrate it by length, screen size and resolution is a nice touch. It offers a 411 service similar to Google’s.

And it’s UI is sleek, although the choice of hot air balloon background is begging for a wisecrack. There’s plenty of hot air in Microsoft’s claim that Bing is a “decision engine, designed to empower people to gain insight and knowledge from the Web, moving more quickly to important decisions.” That said, the engine does seem to be delivering, at least initially, on that promise.

Question is: Can Bing boost Microsoft’s market share in search from the mid-single digits to something more respectable?

Live Blog

Siri CEO Dag Kittlaus comes out. He introduces himself and the product. It’s been many years of work in the making, he says.

Siri is about making interactions between the Web and user much simpler. It is focusing on mobile first. He shows the interface on an iPhone with both a Google screen and Siri screen side by side. Dag types in a flight query to both.

Siri figures out what you mean. Dag asks it a question, compares the results between Siri and Google (GOOG). Walt: Google is terrible! Dag: It gets really interesting when you ask it do a service. Walt: Can’t Bing do this?

It can take actions on your behalf too. For instance, “Il Forniao [Italian restaurant] reservations tonight for 3 at 5pm.” Siri takes your information and pulls up the reservation function for the restaurant.

Siri is sort of a giant mashup of services, Dag says.

It’s “Carol Bartz,” not “Sheryl Bartz,” Dag. Now let’s try asking for a movie. Siri returns the closest location and time for “Angels and Demons.” Siri has an API.

“Get red sox yankees tickets in boston”–this is one for Walt, says Dag. $1,649–the price is wrong? But Siri delivers. Shows a map of the stadium and seats/tickets.

Walt: so Google is constantly stupid, we see that now. But is it only good for certain services? How about ballet? Dag: It learns, we break it out into various areas of expertise. Right now, for instance, it doesn’t do TV listings. Siri has a Q&A function. Dag asks a question to the True Knowledge Web service. Kara: Ask it “How old is Kara?” Siri’s answer: “Dag, it’s not polite to ask about women’s ages.” It’s arguably broken Asimov’s Second Law already. Someone get John Connor, just in case.

Now Dag is demoing on the Apple (AAPL) iPhone, speaking into the phone. Voice recognition is pretty good. He tells it: “Find a plumber near my house.” Siri pulls up a list of nearby plumbers. Kara: Do you have to have a voice like yours for it to work? Dag: It gets pretty good, it learns. Kara: I like.

Walt: Will it be in the App Store? Dag: This summer, and it will be a free app. Walt: Revenue stream? Dag: Tie-ins with the other platforms, i.e., OpenTable. We’ll start with mobile and then build it out.

Walt and Kara: Thanks; that was really cool.
