<p>Okay, okay, we get it: Morgan Stanley got the coveted left-hand lead position on Facebook&#8217;s blockbuster IPO filing. Goldman Sachs is there, too, but in the third-place, always-a-bridesmaid spo,t and is crying big salty tears about the injustice of it all.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s hard to feel badly for overpaid investment bankers, and focusing on them is kind of like endlessly discussing the lawyers who processed your mortgage, when the focus should be on the house you&#8217;re buying.</p>
<p>Does anyone except a few Richie Rich ZIP Codes in Manhattan care about this one deet of the initial public offering of the social networking giant? </p>
<p>Nope, but there is so little real news ahead of the IPO filing expected today that this is what we are chomping on this morning, as everyone awaits the big doc drop at the Securities and Exchange Commission.</p>
<p>Sources said it is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120201/go-the-fk-back-to-sleep-silicon-valley-facebook-ipo-likely-to-file-later-today-at-earliest/">likely to come this afternoon</a> rather than this morning, though. And, perish the thought, all that dotting of I&#8217;s and crossing of T&#8217;s could delay it to tomorrow, even (unlikely, but mebbe!).</p>
<p><em>Sigh.</em></p>
<p>Tidbit: Facebook was actually founded the first Wednesday in February of 2004 in an undergraduate dorm room at Harvard University, like today but eight years later. </p>
<p>Thus, here&#8217;s a boring Facebook history timeline chart to look at:</p>

<p>What up? The <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120131/facebook-board-meeting-today-for-final-ipo-okays/">board met</a>, the spinmeisters are at the ready and, most of all, Silicon Valley is stoked to make some more arrogant badillionaires. </p>
<p>Now, hopefully, we&#8217;ll get the real news about Facebook.</p>
<p>Namely, who&#8217;s getting the big dough in this much-anticipated Web 2.0 gambit? Co-founder and CEO and Hoodie Commander Mark Zuckerberg <em>fer sure</em>, but who else?</p>
<p>Plus all the juicy financials from Facebook, along with stats in usage, growth and just how much the company sticks it to its gaming serf &#8212; <em>oops</em>, partner &#8212; Zynga and others for the privilege of being on its all-powerful platform.</p>
<p>Me? I pay nada, like other Facebook users, for being able to show off pictures of my vacations and decline friendships from PR people I like, but still &#8230; well, you know.</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p><strong>4:45 am PT:</strong> Done with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120201/aol-beats-low-expectations-increasing-ad-revenue-and-slowing-total-decline-in-q4/">AOL Q4 earnings</a>, which were <em>meh</em>, but better meh than expected. AOL, if you recall, used to be Facebook and now is, um, not. </p>
<p>Note to Zuckerberg: Be nice to people on your way up, since you&#8217;ll meet them again on the way down.</p>
<p><strong>4:46 am PT:</strong> I check the SEC site and get zip. Click, click, clickety-click over to find out the latest on Demi Moore and her fake-pot debacle.</p>
<p>Who knew there was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_cannabis">synthetic cannabis</a> and it is called K2 or Spice? Not me! According to Wikipedia: &#8220;It seems likely that synthetic cannabis can precipitate psychosis and in some cases it is prolonged.&#8221;</p>
<p>I decide to blame Ashton Kutcher and then wonder if he is an investor in Facebook via BFF-to-errant-celebrities-who-like-tech Ron Conway, also a Facebook investor.</p>
<p>Note to self: <em>Call Ashton!</em> That dude plays village idiots all the time, but I am not fooled by Mr. Pretty Face.</p>
<p><strong>4:47 am PT:</strong> I consider email bombing Yahoo&#8217;s Jerry Yang, who is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120119/jerry-yangs-short-goodbye-the-official-letter/">probably not so busy right now</a>, and asking him what he thinks about the Demi Moore crisis and also Facebook&#8217;s IPO.  </p>
<p>Remember when Yahoo was king of Silicon Valley and Yang posed in that purple VW on the cover of that magazine? Better still, remember when Yahoo was going to buy Facebook for just over $1 billion and then borked it?</p>
<p>Just sayin&#8217;, Mark &#8212; so, <em>keep it reals</em>!</p>
<p><strong>4:48 am PT:</strong> I consider going out for doughnuts &#8212; and not because of any real weed need. I just would like me some glazed and sprinkled sugar treats right about now. Then, I could post the pictures of them on my Facebook page.</p>

<p>Neil Ashe, who <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101208/cnets-neil-ashe-stepping-down/">left his job running CBS Interactive</a> in late 2010, has taken a job helming Wal-Mart Stores&#8217; global online commerce unit.</p>
<p>The retail behemoth said that Ashe will become president and CEO of its Global eCommerce division, replacing the retiring Eduardo Castro-Wright. He will operate out of Wal-Mart&#8217;s Silicon Valley office in San Bruno, Calif., but will likely make a lot of trips to the company&#8217;s HQ in Bentonville, Ark. (Ashe does not have the U.S.-based e-commerce business; Walmart.com is run by Joel Anderson, who reports up through the Wal-Mart U.S. stores business.)</p>
<p>In an interview earlier today, Ashe said that he was &#8220;impressed by the company&#8217;s realization that the consumer is changing &#8230; and the commitment to global e-commerce.&#8221;</p>
<p>Noting that Wal-Mart stores see 200 million customers a week, he said the goal was to make the online experience as compelling as the offline one.</p>
<p>&#8220;There has to be almost an indifference between physical stores and e-commerce,&#8221; said Ashe. &#8220;The whole company committed to winning on the Internet.&#8221;</p>
<p>Since he left CBS, Ashe has been advising a variety of Web start-ups, including LivingSocial. Ashe <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110404/livingsocial-adds-former-cbs-president-neil-ashe-to-board/">joined the board</a> of the Washington, D.C.-based social buying company last spring.</p>
<p>The job at Wal-Mart is a big one, especially given its up-and-down history in the online space. That includes the recent decision to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110809/wal-mart-shutters-digital-music-store-you-didnt-know-existed/">stop selling MP3s</a> from its Web site.</p>
<p>It has also stepped up its efforts, including a number of small acquisitions, such as mobile advertising start-up <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110913/walmart-acquires-social-ad-targeting-start-up-oneriot/">OneRiot</a> and mobile app company <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120104/wal-mart-acquires-small-mobile-agency-to-beef-up-tech-team/">Small Society</a>.</p>
<p>But it did pay big bucks &#8212; reportedly $300 million &#8212; for social media platform <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110418/exclusive-wal-mart-paid-300-million-plus-for-kosmix/">Kosmix</a>. </p>
<p>Ashe noted that Wal-Mart is indeed still dwarfed online by online dominator Amazon. &#8220;They are very innovative and strategically adept,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>With 59 million monthly visitors to its U.S. Web site and an aim to go global, how Ashe navigates Wal-Mart&#8217;s path in the next years will be interesting to watch.</p>

<p>As president of CBS Interactive, based in San Francisco, Ashe led the interactive content business with operations in the U.S., Europe and China. After leading the successful integration of CNET Networks with CBS, he and his team leveraged existing company assets to ramp up CBS entertainment content distribution online, including making CBS.com the largest television network site in the industry. </p>
<p>Prior to this, Ashe was CEO of CNET Networks, initially best known for providing technology-related information, product reviews and price comparisons through CNET.com. He also oversaw dramatic development in the company’s China division, taking it from a small magazine and events operator to a highly profitable, fast-growing online business. During his tenure, the company&#8217;s value increased from $100 million to $1.8 billion. Ultimately, Ashe led the sale of the company to CBS and became president of CBS Interactive at that time.</p>
<p>Earlier, Ashe founded a company focused on using the Internet to improve K-12 education in the U.S. Prior to this, he was a partner and managing director at private investment firm Crest Communications Holdings and, before that, was an associate at Smith Barney, the investment bank now part of Citigroup. </p>
<p>Ashe has an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School and a B.S. in Business Administration, with a major in Finance, from Georgetown University. He serves on the boards of LivingSocial, AMC Networks and the Georgetown University Board of Regents.</p>
<p>Over the past year, Walmart has made investments in capabilities and talent as it continues to build Global eCommerce. <p>As I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120103/exclusive-yahoo-poised-to-name-ceo-with-ebays-paypal-head-as-top-choice/">reported late last night</a>, Yahoo said it had named PayPal President Scott Thompson as its new CEO. The exec is currently in charge of the large eBay online payments unit.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll start next week, but there are staff conference calls today and also an all-hands meeting on Yahoo&#8217;s main Silicon Valley campus (meet at URLs, troops!) tomorrow.</p>
<p>Yahoo shares are down almost three percent on the news so far, as Wall Street has been hoping for a big sale of some sort and not another turnaround.</p>
<p>Yahoo will be holding a 7 am PT press conference about the move and presumably to swan around Thompson.</p>
<p>(Welcome, Scott! I hope you were informed &#8212; please do not listen to what co-founder Jerry Yang says on this important issue &#8212; that you are supposed to send all internal memos to <em>me</em>! Also, as one of my Twitter followers, Mike Dudas of Google <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/mdudas/status/154552407374835712">just tweeted</a>: &#8220;If Thompson leads companies as well as he grows a moustache, Yahoo made a great CEO choice!!&#8221; I concur.)</p>
<p>A Yahoo PR person confirmed the hire very cordially in a phone call early this morning and the Internet giant also put out a press release.</p>
<p>So did I, of a sort, last night. Given I am too tired to rewrite myself, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120103/exclusive-yahoo-poised-to-name-ceo-with-ebays-paypal-head-as-top-choice/">here is what I had reported</a>:</p>

<p>After Bartz&#8217;s ouster, Yahoo said it was looking at a range of strategic options, including the possible sale of all or part of the company. </p>
<p>That was the focus at first, although Yahoo had simultaneously <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111013/exlcusive-yahoo-hires-heidrick-struggles-for-ceo-search/">hired Heidrick &#038; Struggles</a> to look for a new CEO. </p>
<p>The company attracted <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111130/yahoo-bidders-come-in-at-16-50-to-17-50-with-plan-to-keep-jerry-yang-staying-on-board/">two partial investment bids from private equity firms</a>, Silver Lake and TPG Capital, but shareholders were unhappy with the low prices of these so-called PIPE &#8212; Private Investment in Public Equity &#8212; arrangements.</p>
<p>Yahoo then moved to try to strike a tax-advantaged deal with its long disgruntled Asian partners, China&#8217;s Alibaba Group and Japan&#8217;s SoftBank, to sell back parts of the large stakes it has long owned in Alibaba and Yahoo! Japan. </p>
<p>Those <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111223/yahoo-okays-proceeding-with-term-sheet-to-sell-stakes-back-to-asian-partners-while-also-hoping-to-keep-pe-firms-in-fray/">complex negotiations are still ongoing and look promising</a>, which could yield Yahoo billions of dollars in capital to be given to investors, for stock buybacks or to invest in new initiatives.</p>
<p>Since then, the board &#8212; long considered one of the more cloddish in tech &#8212; has turned its attention to hiring a new CEO, in the hopes of trying once again to revive its flagging fortunes.</p>
<p>Thus, it began looking to hire someone with deep tech experience at a large public consumer Internet company in Silicon Valley. </p>
<p>That narrowed the field, with Yahoo looking at a range of choices with expertise in advertising, technology platforms and more. </p>
<p>There is a lot of that on the deep bench that eBay CEO John Donahoe has assembled at the online commerce giant, including Thompson.</p>
<p>Plus, he is a genuine Internet geek.</p>
<p>According to his eBay bio, Thompson became president of PayPal in early 2008, after serving as its CTO in charge of information technology, product development and architecture.</p>
<p>Before eBay, he worked at Inovant, a subsidiary of Visa formed to oversee global technology for the organization. He was also CIO of Barclays Global Investors and has worked at Coopers and Lybrand on information technology. </p>
<p>And here&#8217;s a tasty new wrinkle: Thompson recently <a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=609937772&#038;sk=wall">&#8220;liked&#8221; Yahoo on his Facebook page</a>, along with the decidedly more interesting Kickstarter and Splunk.</p></blockquote>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Yahoo is poised to name a CEO, an announcement that could come as early as tomorrow.</p>
<p>Sources said the leading candidate likely to get the nod is a dark horse and someone who has not been named in previous reports (and not on my suggested lists!): PayPal President Scott Thompson, who runs eBay&#8217;s massive online payments unit.</p>
<p>While the situation could certainly change, the Yahoo board has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111220/yahoo-intensifies-search-for-ceo-with-hulus-kilar-as-dream-unicorn-candidate/">definitely been moving aggressively of late to try to find a new leader</a> for the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>

Apple&#8217;s iOS and Google&#8217;s Android continue to bleed the BlackBerry of share in the States.</p>
<p>For the three-month period ending in November, RIM&#8217;s share of U.S. smartphone subscribers fell to 16.6 percent from 19.7 percent. That&#8217;s a 3.1 point change from August, and another nasty decline for RIM, which continues to struggle against subscriber losses in the U.S.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the BlackBerry-maker&#8217;s misfortune continues to be its rivals&#8217; gain. For the same period, iOS&#8217;s market share rose 1.4 percentage points to 28.7 percent, and Android&#8217;s to 46.9 percent from 43.8 percent.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s the typically newsless time around Christmas and New Year&#8217;s, but for once there has actually been a lot going on at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Last week, the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s typically moribund board decided to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111223/yahoo-okays-proceeding-with-term-sheet-to-sell-stakes-back-to-asian-partners-while-also-hoping-to-keep-pe-firms-in-fray/">move ahead with negotiations</a> to sell part of its stake in China&#8217;s Alibaba Group, as well as all of its shares in Yahoo Japan.</p>
<p>While that is still not a done deal, it adds clarity to the Yahoo mishegas, as current leaders there seek to turn around the company&#8217;s lagging fortunes.</p>
<p>Now, as Yahoo continues to contemplate a pair of partial investment bids by private equity firms Silver Lake and TPG Capital into 2012, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111220/yahoo-intensifies-search-for-ceo-with-hulus-kilar-as-dream-unicorn-candidate/">more focus will be on the selection of a CEO candidate</a> to take over, sources said.</p>
<p>While I have floated some names that have been contemplated &#8212; such as Hulu CEO Jason Kilar, Juniper CEO Kevin Johnson, former aQuantive and Microsoft exec Brian McAndrews, and board member David Kenny &#8212; I have collected some more that seem to be getting the once-over and are being mentioned internally as well as externally.</p>
<p>Sources said that the Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee at Yahoo, which is run by independent director Patti Hart, has been looking for someone with definite public company experience, as well as expertise in large-scale management.</p>
<p>As to talent, candidates seem to be either good at running big platforms, or deeply knowledgeable about advertising and media as well as technology.</p>
<p>Another important criteria, said sources: Someone who is &#8220;collaborative&#8221; and nonconfrontational. As in, not like the former and very pugnacious CEO Carol Bartz, who was fired in September.</p>
<p>Thus, here&#8217;s another trio of candidates to consider, while we wait &#8212; and who knows how long <em>that</em> will be given that the Asian activity could have tired out for a bit this usually slow-moving board:</p>

<p><strong>Chris Liddell</strong>: The former CFO of Microsoft is an interesting name that just popped up recently, and it makes some sense when you think about the possible mindset of the Yahoo board.</p>
<p>Liddell, who has a charming New Zealand accent, did a short stint, from January of 2010 to March of this year, as CFO at General Motors. Recently married to another former Microsoft exec, he has since been living in New York.</p>
<p>He apparently loves living in the Big Apple.</p>
<p>But when he left GM, Liddell made it clear he wanted to go for a top job next. He was among the candidates for a recent search for a CEO of Time Warner&#8217;s Time Inc. (an effort that was run by exec search firm Heidrick &#038; Struggles, which is also conducting the Yahoo hunt).</p>
<p>Known as tough and decisive, he certainly is qualified to deal with complex financial situations, such as the one in which Yahoo now finds itself knee-deep. One knock: Little product or advertising experience.</p>

<p><strong>Laura Desmond</strong>: While certainly a dark horse, Desmond has been queried by Heidrick, said several sources. </p>
<p>She is CEO of Starcom MediaVest Group, a subsidiary of Publicis, one of the largest media planning and buying agencies, making Desmond one of advertising&#8217;s most prominent players.</p>
<p>Well-known in Yahoo&#8217;s key market, she is considered a savvy and smart exec with a wry sense of humor.</p>
<p>I happen to particularly like one line from one of her bios: </p>
<p>&#8220;Ms. Desmond&#8217;s career has been driven by two caveats: Take intelligent risks and learn more from failure than from success.&#8221;</p>
<p>She could learn a lot at Yahoo. (I know, easy jab, but it works!)</p>

<p><strong>David Rosenblatt</strong>: The former DoubleClick CEO, who went on to a big ad job at Google after it paid $3.2 billion for the company, is also a long shot, mostly by his own choosing.</p>
<p>The sharp exec is always on the short list of CEO candidates for a lot of big, splashy online jobs, but he seems to want to swim his own way.</p>
<p>Case in point: He was recently named <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111103/dibs-obscure-tech-company-nabs-former-doubleclick-ceo-david-rosenblatt/">CEO of New York-based 1stdibs</a>, a relatively obscure online marketplace known among antique dealers and interior designers looking for one-of-a-kind furniture, art and lighting.</p>
<p>Yes, that&#8217;s right: Fancy lamps.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt also serves on the boards at Group Commerce, Twitter and IAC.</p>
<p>All that Internet ad and e-commerce experience is exactly why Rosenblatt would be one of the better choices for CEO of Yahoo. But, for him, I would guess taking such a job is probably in the life&#8217;s-too-short category.</p>

At least that&#8217;s the gist of a new study by retail analysis firm RichRelevance.</p>
<p>Between April and December 2011, <a href="http://www.richrelevance.com/blog/2011/12/richrelevance-holiday-shopping-study-mobile-matters/">RichRelevance analyzed 3.4 billion shopping sessions</a> and found that consumers making purchases from their mobile devices accounted for about 3 percent of total sales. In April, 88 percent of those purchases were made via iOS devices, mostly the iPhone and iPad. By December, that percentage had risen to 92 percent.</p>
<p>So, really, the rise in mobile shopping is being driven by iOS. Which is good news for Apple, and for retailers, as well. According to RichRelevance, the average order value (AOV) of purchases made via iOS devices is greater than those of other platforms. IOS&#8217;s AOV was $123 in December; Android&#8217;s, meanwhile, was $101.   </p>
<p>Said RichRelevance CEO David Selinger: &#8220;The numbers across our retailing partners sites demonstrate just how powerful the iOS platform is enabling mobile web shopping and, while still below 5 percent in total conversion, mobile traffic’s doubling in eight months is a trend we only see accelerating.&#8221;</p>
<p>As a mobile OS, Apple&#8217;s iOS may not be quite as ubiquitous as Google&#8217;s Android, but as a shopping platform, its dominance appears uncontested.</p>

<p>As I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111208/googles-news-reader-now-called-currents-finally-coming/">reported this morning</a> it was close to launching, Google has debuted its news reader product, which is called <a href="http://www.google.com/producer/editions">Google Currents</a>. In a <a href="http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2011/12/google-currents-is-hot-off-press.html">blog post</a>, the search giant said that the new product, which will compete with many others, including as Flipboard, Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand and AOL&#8217;s Editions, will be available on Google&#8217;s own Android mobile operating system devices, as well as Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPad.</p>
<p>Google Currents will debut with 150 partners &#8212; including <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> (my developers can sure keep a secret).</p>

<p>Kleiner Perkins has nabbed former Twitter engineering head Mike Abbott, who <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111013/exclusive-vp-engineering-mike-abbott-departs/">left the social communications company less than two months ago</a> to be an entrepreneur in residence at Benchmark Capital. </p>
<p>(Well, that didn&#8217;t last long, Mike, but maybe the food was better at 2750 Sand Hill Road than at 2480 Sand Hill Road.)</p>
<p>In an interview this morning, Abbott said that he hopes to stay a VC for 20 years (<em>yipes!</em>), since it allows him to work closely with a wide range of entrepreneurs and also get a broad view across a spectrum of businesses.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am really energized about what&#8217;s been happening in a lot of places like software,&#8221; he said. &#8220;From my experience, I think I bring a lot of differentiation for the companies Kleiner is invested in.&#8221;</p>
<p>And tech cred too. &#8220;We think engineers will be thrilled to have access to Mike and he&#8217;s a magnet for talent,&#8221; said Kleiner partner Ted Schlein, who compared him to all the comic-book heroes, The Avengers, in one person. &#8220;Mike is multi-faceted.&#8221; </p>
<p>Abbott was indeed a high-profile hire for Twitter a little over a year ago from Palm, where he served as head of its software and services, in charge of its webOS mobile platform.</p>
<p>He was brought in to provide a level of discipline and reliability to the Twitter communications platform and service, which had been plagued by persistent outages that made the Fail Whale infamous.</p>
<p>Abbott will focus on social, mobile and cloud investments at the well-known Silicon Valley venture firm while working on a team that includes high-profile players Mary Meeker and Bing Gordon.</p>

<p>Thismoment, the San Francisco-based digital marketing platform provider, said it has raised $7.3 million in its first institutional venture round from Sierra Ventures.</p>
<p>Before this funding, the company raised $4.25 million since 2008, when it was founded as a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090623/creating-moments-of-your-life/">content-sharing Web site</a>.</p>
<p>The company, which serves brands and agencies with its Distributed Engagement Channel platform, said it is aimed at &#8220;managing content, conversation and creative assets across earned, owned and paid media channels.&#8221; That means marketing &#8220;initiatives across Facebook, YouTube, brand sites, rich media ad units, mobile devices, tablets and digital outdoor placements,&#8221; as well as a platform to manage these social marketing campaigns.</p>
<p>Sierra&#8217;s Mark Fernandes will join the board. Other investors include private equity firm Fenway Partners, as well as well-known digital execs Shelby Bonnie, Jason Hirschhorn and Mika Salmi.</p>
<p>Thismoment said it will use the new funds to expand operations in the U.S. and also add them internationally.</p>

<p>Disney, which has been busy reorganizing its interactive group, is buying <a href="http://www.babble.com">Babble Media</a>, a New York-based parenting platform that features several hundred mom bloggers.</p>
<p>The entertainment giant declined to provide the purchase price for the New York-based start-up, which was founded by aiming at urban hipster parents and has garnered more than $6 million in funding since it was spun off from Nerve Media several years ago.</p>
<p>Babble&#8217;s venture investors include Greycroft Partners, Village Ventures and iNovia Capital.</p>
<p>Co-founders Rufus Griscom and Alisa Volkman and the rest of the 40-person Babble staff will join the Disney Interactive Media Group unit as part of its Moms and Family portfolio, Disney said in its official press release (see below).</p>
<p>Disney described Babble as the &#8220;premier blogging platform for a new generation of connected parents.&#8221; To me, that roughly translates into Brooklyn-living, Bugaboo-pushing, organic arugula-eating, yoga-calm moms and sensitive New Age dads. </p>
<p>But don&#8217;t take my word for it &#8212; today&#8217;s front page features on Babble include &#8220;15 Vegan Recipes for Thanksgiving&#8221; and &#8220;Is It Selfish to Have One Child?&#8221; (Yum and <em>kinda</em>!)</p>
<p>The next obvious stop for its audience, after the kids get a little bigger: Gwyneth Paltrow&#8217;s fabulously twee and irksomely addictive <a href="http://www.GOOP.com/">GOOP</a>.</p>
<p>But Brooke Chaffin, who is SVP of Moms and Family in the Disney Interactive Media Group, said in an interview that the highly interactive content site with a definite &#8220;sophisticated&#8221; editorial voice has become mainstream, and is actually where the whole category is going.</p>
<p>&#8220;Babble is sharing the experience and stories on a daily basis through the parents lens,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And it brings in a blog network that is so important to this audience, because it&#8217;s by, for and about parents, and that&#8217;s far more important for them than experts.&#8221;</p>
<p>There will be that, too, said Chaffin, who noted the site has grown 100 percent year over year. It is now up to four million unique monthly visitors.</p>
<p>Disney plans to add its more evergreen family-focused content to Babble, to give it more heft to compete with other similar parenting sites, such as Johnson &#038; Johnson-owned BabyCenter, NBC&#8217;s iVillage, Parents.com and CafeMom.</p>
<p>Interestingly, Disney had taken a gander at <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100817/exclusive-yahoo-eyes-cafemom-for-100-million-acquisition/">buying CafeMom</a> a while back.</p>
<p>Chaffin, who <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110105/disney-interactive-hires-brooke-chaffin-to-oversee-content-for-women-and-families/">came to Disney earlier this year</a> after a stint at Auditude and a long time at Yahoo, said Babble has carved out a unique niche in combining content with social &#8212; the current gold ring for a lot of publishers. </p>
<p>&#8220;What Babble is doing is best of breed &#8230; it is just a different approach to blogging,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It felt like we at Disney are about storytelling and Babble does an amazing job doing just that.&#8221;</p>

<p>In a <a href="http://blogs.adobe.com/conversations/2011/11/flash-focus.html">blog post by one of its execs</a>, titled &#8220;Flash to Focus on PC Browsing and Mobile Apps; Adobe to More Aggressively Contribute to HTML5,&#8221; Adobe said what had already been reported: That it would no longer be developing its well-known Flash for mobile devices.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the key graph:</p>
<p>&#8220;Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook. We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations. We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last night, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111108/gone-in-a-flash-adobe-said-halting-development-on-mobile-version-of-its-plug-in/">reports surfaced</a> that the high-profile software company &#8212; whose Flash technology has been a flagship product &#8212; was halting development on the mobile version of its browser plug-in.</p>
<p>Now, Adobe will focus its PC Web browser business on tools that allow Flash developers to create mobile apps by packaging their code to run on Adobe&#8217;s AIR platform.</p>
<p>The move has big implications for Adobe going forward and also for mobile device makers, such as Google and Research In Motion. But <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111109/horse-flash-apples-steve-jobs-on-adobe-vendetta-in-2010-at-d8-video/">not Apple</a>.</p>
<p>As Ina Fried wrote: </p>
<p>&#8220;The move, if true, would be a major blow to Android device makers, who have long touted Flash compatibility as a key competitive advantage over Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPad.</p>
<p>It would also mark a posthumous vindication for former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who took a controversial stand by not supporting Flash on Apple&#8217;s mobile products.&#8221;</p>
<p>Turns out Jobs was prescient, as usual.</p>

We will continue to leverage our experience with Flash to accelerate our work with the W3C and WebKit to bring similar capabilities to HTML5 as quickly as possible, just as we have done with CSS Shaders.  And, we will design new features in Flash for a smooth transition to HTML5 as the standards evolve so developers can confidently invest knowing their skills will continue to be leveraged.</p>

<p>At a 2010 onstage interview with Walt Mossberg and me at the eighth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs spent a lot of time &#8212; and with considerable passion &#8212; talking about his company&#8217;s decision to dump Adobe&#8217;s popular Flash technology in its iPhone and iPad devices. </p>
<p>While he insisted that he wasn&#8217;t out to crush Adobe &#8212; instead using the metaphor of &#8220;choosing what horses to ride&#8221; &#8212; Jobs explained that the software technology was buggy, no longer useful, and, therefore, needed to be put out to pasture.</p>
<p>&#8220;We try to pick things that are in their springs &#8230; sometimes you just have to pick the things that are the right things going forward,&#8221; said Jobs plainly. &#8220;Flash looks like a technology that had its day and is waning.&#8221; According to Jobs, HTML5 was the new colt to back.</p>
<p>As to the implications on Apple&#8217;s mobile devices if consumers did not agree with his choice, he noted that &#8220;it all works itself out,&#8221; adding that a new iPad was then selling every three seconds.</p>
<p>&#8220;People seem to be liking iPads,&#8221; said Jobs with his patented grin.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an interesting video to watch now &#8212; along with this one on Adobe CEO <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111109/the-fate-of-flash-on-mobile-devices-heres-the-adobe-ceo-talking-about-it-at-d9/">Shantanu Narayen</a> talking about the issue a year later at <strong>D9</strong> &#8212; because of reports that first surfaced last night, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111108/gone-in-a-flash-adobe-said-halting-development-on-mobile-version-of-its-plug-in/">that the high-profile software company</a> &#8212; whose Flash technology has been a flagship product &#8212; was halting development on the mobile version of its browser plug-in.</p>
<p>Adobe <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111109/adobe-admits-its-saying-buh-bye-to-flash-for-mobile-devices/">confirmed the move this morning</a>, noting it will focus its PC Web browser business and on tools that allow Flash developers to create mobile apps by packaging their code to run on Adobe&#8217;s AIR platform.</p>
<p>The move has big implications for Adobe going forward and also for mobile device makers, such as Google and Research In Motion. But <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111109/horse-flash-apples-steve-jobs-on-adobe-vendetta-in-2010-at-d8-video/">not Apple</a>.</p>
<p>As Ina Fried wrote: </p>
<p>&#8220;The move, if true, would be a major blow to Android device makers, who have long touted Flash compatibility as a key competitive advantage over Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPad.</p>
<p>It would also mark a posthumous vindication for former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who took a controversial stand by not supporting Flash on Apple&#8217;s mobile products.&#8221;</p>
<p>Adobe now apparently agrees.</p>

<p>Demand Media beat Wall Street expectations in the third quarter, posting a loss of five cents a share. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111107/what-answer-will-investors-be-demand-ing-in-the-q3-call-today/">Investors had expected</a> it to lose from four to six cents.</p>
<p>Revenue was up 25 percent to $85.1 million, compared to $65.4 million in the same period a year ago. Minus traffic acquisition costs, sales increased 26 percent to $78.1 million from $62.2 million.</p>
<p>The stock of the Santa Monica, Calif., social content company has suffered in the quarter due to worries about its traffic and growth, but it has recently bounced back after hitting all-time lows.</p>
<p>After losing almost nine percent today, in profit-taking ahead of earnings after a recent price surge, Demand shares rose over 17 percent in after-hours trading to $8.30.</p>
<p>Some more details, according to a <a href="http://ir.demandmedia.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=215358&#038;p=irol-newsArticle&#038;ID=1627310&#038;highlight=">Demand statement on the Q3 financial results</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Content &#038; Media Revenue increased 27% to $50.7 million, compared with $39.8 million in Q310.</p>
<p>Traffic acquisition costs (TAC), which represent the portion of Content &#038; Media revenue shared with Demand Media partners, of $3.4 million, or 6.7% of Content &#038; Media revenue, compared with $3.2 million, or 7.9% of Content &#038; Media revenue, in Q310.</p>
<p>Content &#038; Media Revenue ex-TAC grew 29% to $47.4 million, from $36.7 million in Q310.</p>
<p>Registrar Revenue increased 20% to $30.7 million compared with $25.5 million in Q310.</p></blockquote>
<p>In addition to its more high-profile content business, Demand also has a domain registry unit. </p>
<p>&#8220;We reported another strong quarter as we continue to build Demand Media&#8217;s foundation for long-term growth,&#8221; said Richard Rosenblatt, Chairman and CEO of Demand Media in the statement. &#8220;The Company is uniquely positioned to deliver data-driven professional content through its robust content publishing platform. We are now in the process of optimizing that platform while increasing our investment in video content and enhancing the quality, engagement and user experience of our sites.&#8221;</p>

<p>I am here at Yahoo HQ in Sunnyvale, Calif., to check out &#8220;Product Runway,&#8221; which is the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s attempt to show that it can still innovate. </p>
<p>First and foremost is the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111028/news-reader-traffic-jam-yahoos-livestand-and-googles-propeller-set-to-launch-aiming-at-flipboard/">launch of Livestand</a>, a personalized news reader that is similar to Flipboard and a variety of other rivals, including &#8212; soon &#8212; Google.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s Yahoo&#8217;s attempt to present a business-as-usual feel &#8212; amidst a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111031/yahoo-shares-melt-as-rumors-conflict-with-other-rumors/">long and agonizing and very public strategic overview</a> that might also include the sale of the company (or <em>not</em>!), in the wake of the recent firing of its last CEO, Carol Bartz.</p>
<p>It has caused a lot of trauma inside Yahoo, which can&#8217;t help with innovation.</p>
<p>But we press on!</p>
<p>In other words, despite the three-ring circus going on outside, Yahoo wants you to know it is still hard at work.</p>
<p>We begin:</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am</strong>: As the strains of U2 die out, Yahoo Chief Product Officer Blake Irving takes the stage, which is actually set up in the company&#8217;s cafeteria. I can smell lunch being made nearby and I am hungry.</p>
<p>Apt &#8212; Yahoo certainly needs to show off a lot of cool stuff or its fate will be cooked.</p>
<p><em>No pressure, Blake!</em></p>
<p>&#8220;Personally, I am more bullish on Yahoo today,&#8221; he said. &#8220;What is Yahoo? Simple. It&#8217;s the premier digital media company. Period. Stop.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>10:46 am</strong>: Irving pulls out his favorite slide, which looks like a chemistry test. It lists the various elements of the product strategy, with things like personalization, mobile, premium.</p>
<p>Now to Livestand, which is available on the Apple iTunes app store right <em>now</em>.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t all rush at once!</p>
<p>Irving notes that Livestand is more than just an app &#8212; it is a platform.</p>
<p>In other words, Yahoo wants to help publishers publish online. Kind of a Facebook of content. </p>
<p>If Yahoo can pull it off, that is. (And, of course, unless Facebook decides to do the same.)</p>
<p><strong>10:50 am</strong>: Livestand is an HTML5 &#8220;personalized living magazine.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;This is the way Web pages are going to look,&#8221; declares Irving. Which is to say, heavy on photos, swoopy navigation, a television screen-like interface.</p>
<p>Irving uses the example of Surfer magazine, which is a good idea since waves always look pretty. Especially in a video-in-frame with Kelly Slater in Hawaii.</p>
<p>But, in essence, for anyone who has used Flipboard for years now, none of this is entirely different.</p>
<p><strong>10:54 am</strong>: The look of what would be the Yahoo News page is actually much more interesting, since it is clearly a whole lot better than the Web page. </p>

<p>Irving also shows off a &#8220;living ad&#8221; &#8212; in this case, an unusually snuggly couple on a couch. It is cool, but creepy.</p>
<p>When launched, the ad has tap points. Irving &#8212; naughtily declaring about what is an ad, &#8220;I&#8217;ll tap that&#8221; &#8212; taps the lady&#8217;s butt, which would also have been my move. We learn about the jeans, of course.</p>
<p><strong>10:58 am</strong>: Irving then shows off the ability to add feeds. </p>
<p>Next, something called &#8220;Cocktails.&#8221; First up, a developer tool called Yahoo Mojito and Yahoo Manhattan, which is a hosting service. The company will open-source both the technologies in 2012.</p>
<p>Irving brings up Mike Kerns, VP of Personalization &#038; Social, who came to Yahoo when it bought the innovative sports fan site called Citizen Sports. </p>
<p>&#8220;We like to ship <em>sh#t</em>,&#8221; he notes. I like Mike Kerns immediately.</p>
<p>Kerns intros C.O.R.E. No, it is not a secret government organization that takes out fussy bloggers, who might be more critical than Yahoo execs would like.</p>
<p>In fact, it stands for &#8220;content optimization relevance engine.&#8221; Of course it does.</p>
<p>Simply put, C.O.R.E. is trying to link the right content or whatever to the right consumers and who likes what. Ladies like this, dudes like this. Apparently, &#8220;men of multiple ages&#8221; enjoy stories about golden chicken.</p>
<p><strong>11:11 am</strong>: Kerns is moving on to social, especially its integration with Facebook. While much touted, sources tell me it has gone slower than expected in terms of use, but that it is improving.</p>
<p>Kerns talks about the idea of matching content to conversations to interests and, well, you know &#8212; the now exhausting world of modern media consumption.</p>

<p><em>Forget it, pal!</em> It is a full-information society now and you better get on board and start poking your friends about every little thing.</p>
<p>(Personally, I plan on becoming a hermit in 3 &#8230; 2 &#8230; 1.)</p>
<p><strong>11:18 am</strong>: Now <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110330/yahoo-hires-tim-parsey-as-head-ux-designer/">Tim Parsey</a>, who is Yahoo&#8217;s design head. He is hands down the most delightful exec the company has had in a while, mostly because he loves to smirk adorkably.</p>
<p>He shows off Yahoo&#8217;s first original design, which was a dull list. And then another really bad logo. But Parsey loves it! It&#8217;s <em>kitschy</em>!</p>
<p>Smirk attack!</p>
<p>Parsey moves into what has to happen now, which is to deliver a much more emotional experience and a much better designed one. He uses words like &#8220;humanism.&#8221;</p>
<p>Say what? He is right &#8212; Yahoo has for too long completely ignored design as an important part of the experience.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why Flipboard was so quickly touted &#8212; it was pretty and fun. And it is why everyone is simply <em>forced</em> to love Apple products.</p>
<p><strong>11:22 am</strong>: Parsey even has a code for it, called REM &#8212; for rational, emotional and meaningful.</p>
<p>He shows off a weather app. People take photos and they can be used in the app. Then Yahoo Mail for the iPad, whic is also handsome with photos and video. Livestand, also pretty.</p>
<p>&#8220;Great way to differentiate,&#8221; says Parsey. He calls it &#8220;one Yahoo!&#8221; Indeed.</p>

<p>Back to IntoNow, it&#8217;s the television indexing service that Yahoo <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110425/yahoo-buys-tv-programming-index-intonow/">bought in April</a>. </p>
<p>Essentially, more ways to watch the media &#8212; in this case, video &#8212; and do 53 other things at the very same time. Memo to humanity: We will all be paying continuous partial attention for the rest of eternity.</p>
<p>Like I said: <em>Hermitage!</em></p>
<p><strong>11:41 am</strong>: Product dude Irving is back, making a point that, despite all the public mishegas, Yahoo has been busy at innovating. </p>
<p>A redo of email, better search, social &#8220;Facebar&#8221; with Facebook, Flickr for Google Android.</p>
<p>Irving is correct &#8212; Yahoo&#8217;s engineers have been hard at work and deserve kudos for doing so, even with attrition issues, stock declines and questions about the company&#8217;s very future being debated daily.</p>
<p>The problem is that too many of these improvements are mostly incremental and essentially table stakes for tech companies, most of whom have introed many more significant innovations in the same time frame as Yahoo has.</p>
<p>Google did Android, Google+ (as well as some notable failures). Microsoft did Kinect, Windows Phone, Windows 8. Amazon did Kindle Fire. Facebook did a range of major updates, as it has grown like a weed.</p>
<p>And there&#8217;s Apple. You might have heard of the iPhone and the iPad.</p>
<p>You get my point. Yahoo&#8217;s Product Runway today is well done, but what it really needs to be is just the beginning of a take-off.</p>
<p><strong>11:48 am</strong>: Now Q&#038;A time. </p>
<p>The first question is what took so long to get Livestand out, the second is why should people use Livestand since Flipboard and others have already been around for a dog&#8217;s age.</p>

<p>I ask about design &#8212; mostly because I want Parsey to use the word &#8220;delicious&#8221; a lot &#8212; and also about all the turmoil around the company and its impact on product creation. (I decide not to mention that Yahoo blew its acquisition of the bookmarking site, Delicious, and then sold it.)</p>
<p>Parsey delivers on the delicious scale, noting that Yahoo must have one design experience and yet has a lot of different interfaces. In other words, it cannot be Apple, but it can feel a lot more cohesive.</p>
<p>Irving talks a little bit around the obvious elephant in the room &#8212; the future of Yahoo &#8212; noting that the product staff was trying to focus and forget the storm going on outside.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have dreams about what this company can be,&#8221; says Irving.</p>
<p>You and me both, brother.</p>
<p><strong>12:04 pm</strong>: More questions that are too detailed for my tastes, since they have delivered lunch and I can see it and I am ravenous.</p>
<p>As Parsey might say: It looks <em>deliiiiiccccious</em>.</p>
<p>Now, let&#8217;s hope Yahoo can do even more tasty stuff.</p>

<p>Clearspring, the social-sharing company &#8212; in an effort to increase its business as a marketing analytics player &#8212; has acquired XGraph, a data science company.</p>
<p>Clearspring declined to provide the price it paid for XGraph, but said the deal was in cash and stock. The start-up raised $3.75 million just over a year ago.</p>
<p>The combined company has 85 employees &#8212; 70 at Clearspring and 15 at XGraph.</p>
<p>Execs at the the McLean, Va.-based company said the purchase will increase value to advertisers and publishers via audience targeting and data science. Clearspring is best known by consumers for <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20080930/clearspring-plus-addthis-but-does-that-add-up-to-a-real-business/">its AddThis social-sharing tool</a>, which provides a lot of detailed user data.</p>
<p>Clearspring <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110510/clearspring-raises-20m-for-audience-data-and-gobbling-up-start-ups/">raised $20 million</a> in funding in May. At the time, the company said it planned to spend its new cash on acquisitions that leveraged data and built audiences more efficiently.</p>
<p>The New York-based XGraph focuses on modeling and monetizing the Web&#8217;s social graph.</p>

<p>&#8220;We get a lot of data points every day and making sense of them is something we have already been doing, but XGraph fits the bill to go even further in the multi-graph use of data,&#8221; said Clearspring CEO Ramsey McGrory. &#8220;It puts us in a position to be the market leader for the application of data.&#8221;</p>
<p>Key Compton, CEO and co-founder of the three-year-old XGraph, noted that the industry has become data-driven in new ways.</p>
<p>&#8220;People are connected to each other via social connections in a multi-graph platform,&#8221; said Compton. &#8220;I think there are some really interesting opportunities to access the data.&#8221; </p>

<p>Memo to Flipboard, as well as Pulse, CNN&#8217;s Zite and AOL&#8217;s Editions: You might want to make some room in the already-crowded news and social reader space, because you&#8217;re about to get some bigfoot company.</p>
<p>Next Wednesday, according to sources close to the situation, Yahoo will finally officially unveil its offering, called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110210/yahoos-got-a-digital-newstand/">Livestand</a>.</p>
<p>And perhaps as early as next week or in the weeks soon after, Google will also weigh in with its version of the genre &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110915/its-called-google-propeller-and-its-aimed-at-flipboard-and-facebook-too/">code-named Propeller</a> &#8212; which also might be the product&#8217;s name. Another moniker under strong consideration: Currents.</p>
<p>As I have previously reported, Google Propeller is an HTML5 reader for the Apple iPad and Android &#8212; essentially a souped-up version of similar apps such as Flipboard, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">AOL&#8217;s Editions</a>, Zite (which was just <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110830/zite-sold-to-cnn-for-just-over-20-million/">bought by Time Warner&#8217;s CNN</a>) and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110616/pulse-gets-quicker-with-9m-in-funding/">Pulse</a>. </p>
<p>All these apps are part of the drastically changing habits of media consumers, helping users better navigate numerous social and media feeds &#8212; such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as news sites and more &#8212; using handsome interfaces and touch technologies on tablet devices.</p>
<p>Flipboard, the most prominent and elegant of these offerings, is now available only on the Apple iPad. </p>
<p>Flipboard&#8217;s traction among elite users, along with its high-level design ethos and strong reviews, is why Google tried to buy the well-funded company last year, sources said.</p>
<p>But Flipboard &#8212; which is backed by some of tech&#8217;s biggest venture players, who have invested <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">more than $60 million at a $200 million valuation</a> &#8212; declined the kind offer.</p>
<p>At the time, sources said, Google told Flipboard execs that if it did not buy the start-up, it planned to do a version of its own.</p>
<p>Hence, after I heard about the product earlier this year, I dubbed it the <em>Flipinator</em>.</p>

<p>According to sources, Propeller will launch with a plethora of media partners, as well as integration into the Google+ social network. The aim of the search giant is to offer media companies easy tools for publishing content on these devices, as well as a better path to monetization.</p>
<p>That is essentially the same plan at Yahoo, which has been working on Livestand with hopes of it being a product that will woo publishers into tight collaboration with the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.yadvertisingblog.com/blog/2011/02/16/video-demo-livestand-from-yahoo/">Livestand was announced</a> by Yahoo&#8217;s now-fired CEO Carol Bartz in February, at a speech at the World Mobile Congress in Spain.</p>
<p>At the time, Bartz demoed a magazinelike platform that would allow publishers to put up content easily and give users the ability to personalize their selections based on search history and interests.</p>
<p>Bartz called it &#8220;content in context.&#8221; (You can see the demo video below.)</p>
<p>But while Bartz promised the product within three months, development has been slowed by its complex technologies, bugs and the need to sign on publishers. </p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving is pushing the product hard as a way for the company to reinvigorate its media products.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear how many publishers Yahoo will have at launch, and neither are the distribution plans, beyond flacking it from the Web site and being present in app stores.</p>
<p>Google, on the other hand, has its Android platform to push out Propeller, although it all must work as well on Apple&#8217;s iPad, which is the dominant tablet on the market.</p>
<p>But just because both Yahoo and Google are big companies is by no means a guarantee of success &#8212; think Yahoo 360 or Google Wave or Buzz &#8212; and their lateness might be a hindrance.</p>
<p>And, in fact, other news reader apps are much further along. The leader, Flipboard, has already had four million downloads and 50 partnerships with leading publishers.</p>
<p>It also has started to introduce rich advertising products and, perhaps most importantly, has tight social integration with Twitter and Facebook.</p>
<p>There will be social elements on both Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand and Google&#8217;s Propeller. But news reading will be stressed more, making them more like Pulse, a tiny but highly innovative start-up.</p>
<p>Each of the existing apps will presumably compete by adding on more features. Pulse recently added <a href="http://blog.pulse.me/your-news-everywhere-sync-sources-to-your-pul-0">cross-platform, cross-device syncing</a>, while Flipboard is close to unveiling <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110421/pre-200-million-valuation-flipboards-mike-mccue-at-sxsw-the-full-onstage-video/">an iPhone version</a> it has said it was working on.</p>
<p>Yahoo and Google PR declined comment.</p>

<p>Akamai president David Kenny has stepped down after a year on the job &#8212; and in the midst of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/?s=david+kenny">Yahoo&#8217;s CEO search</a>, where his name has come up as a possible <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110907/yahoos-next-ceo-maybe-snoop-dogg-ya-digg/">replacement for fired CEO Carol Bartz</a>.</p>
<p>Kenny is also a Yahoo board member &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110204/exclusive-huffpos-eric-hippeau-stepping-down-from-yahoo-board-as-akamais-david-kenny-steps-in/">joining early last year</a> &#8212; and had quickly become one of the major forces in pushing for change at the company in the wake of the troubled Bartz regime.</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://www.akamai.com/html/investor/quarterly_releases/2011/press_102611.html">statement</a> distributed along with Akamai&#8217;s Q3 earnings, Kenny said he wants to &#8220;to return to my first passion of pursuing emerging opportunities on the consumer Internet.&#8221; </p>
<p>You can decide for yourself whether Yahoo represents an &#8220;emerging&#8221; opportunity or something else.</p>
<p>Sources said the departure from the networking company was mutual, although there has been an increasing amount of tension over Kenny&#8217;s involvement on the Yahoo board, which has been working on a massive strategic review.</p>
<p>Kenny, who was the initial leader of the effort, stepped down from that board task and also recused himself from any involvement in the simultaneous search for a new CEO.</p>
<p>Whether he will get the job is not a done deal by any means. He is among several candidates Yahoo has been contemplating pursuing, after only recently <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111013/exlcusive-yahoo-hires-heidrick-struggles-for-ceo-search/">hiring Heidrick &#038; Struggles</a> for its executive search.</p>
<p>In fact, it&#8217;s not entirely clear Kenny wants to be CEO of Yahoo or if he would want to return to his roots at a consumer advertising agency. Another issue: He currently lives in Boston.</p>
<p>Before coming to Akamai, he was managing partner of VivaKi, the media and digital arm of marketing giant, Publicis Groupe. He came to the French concern after it bought relationship marketing services firm Digitas, which Kenny ran.</p>
<p>All that advertising experience is one of the reasons he is being looked at by Yahoo, which is contemplating doubling down in online advertising platforms and products if it does not sell.</p>
<p>Many assumed that Kenny&#8217;s move to the Web platform company meant that it would become more actively involved in Web media itself. But Akamai didn&#8217;t make any major moves or acquisitions during his tenure.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, back at Akamai, Kenny&#8217;s title will be assumed by CEO Paul Sagan, who had previously served as president as well.</p>

<p>As happened last week to its centralized marketing division, Yahoo has broken up its Customer Advocacy organization, with its staff distributed to the various regions and the product unit of the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p>Customer Advocacy has been led by EVP <a href="http://pressroom.yahoo.net/pr/ycorp/jeff-russakow.aspx">Jeff Russakow</a>, whose fate is now similarly unclear as it is for <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111021/exclusive-yahoo-overhauls-marketing-unit-the-internal-memo/">CMO Elisa Steele</a>, whose division was diced up to the regions last week. </p>
<p>Both execs &#8212; who were hired by fired CEO Carol Bartz &#8212; plan to remain at the company until at least January, sources said.</p>
<p>Russakow, according to his Yahoo bio, has had &#8220;global responsibility for all of Yahoo!&#8217;s customer support functions, including audience, small business, ad operations, and search network quality.&#8221; He came to Yahoo from previous jobs at Symantec and Adobe.</p>
<p>Interim CEO Tim Morse sent a memo to employees about the change, noting Russakow is looking for his next opportunity, using much the same language as Steele used in her internal email. </p>
<p>The moves are interesting, given Yahoo&#8217;s current effort to find a new strategy, which includes a possible sale of all or parts of the company. But there is also a strong sentiment within the company to reorganize around strengthening its advertising platform and products.</p>
<p>I have a call into Yahoo PR for comment (but let&#8217;s assume I am accurate about this, shall we?).</p>

<p>In an interview with me last week, co-founder and CEO Travis Katz said that the move is an important one for the Silicon Valley start-up, since on-the-go trip recommendations using smartphones have become increasingly important to travelers.</p>
<p>&#8220;You live away from your laptop most of your time, and especially on trips,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But you also want to preserve those experiences.&#8221;</p>

<p>Gogobot, which launched late last year, has raised $4 million in venture funding from Battery Ventures, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt&#8217;s Innovation Endeavors and angel investors Chris DeWolfe, Keith Rabois and Oren Ze&#8217;ev.</p>
<p>Katz said Gogobot would eventually build on other mobile platforms, such as Google Android.</p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Twitter VP of Engineering Mike Abbott has left the company.</p>
<p>He is apparently interested in doing more investing.</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATE:</strong> Twitter confirmed the departure in a statement, noting that Abbott was joining Benchmark Capital as an entrepreneur in residence. Benchmark&rsquo;s Peter Fenton is on the Twitter board.</p>
<p>&#8220;We can confirm that Mike Abbott is no longer with Twitter. Mike will be available to assist the company in his new role as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Benchmark Capital. We thank Mike for his leadership in growing an outstanding team of engineers from 100 to 400 that have successfully taken on the unique challenge of making Twitter reliable and stable. While Mike led the engineering team, Twitter grew from handling 55 million tweets a day to 230 million. <p>The move feels sudden, but sources said it has been brewing for a while and happened several days ago.</p>
<p>Abbott was a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100417/the-palm-anti-brain-drain-filings-collect-the-entire-set/">high-profile hire</a> for Twitter a little over a year ago from Palm, where he served as head of its software and services, in charge of its webOS platform.</p>
<p>He was brought in to bring a level of discipline and reliability to the Twitter communications platform and service, which was plagued by persistent outages that made the Fail Whale infamous.</p>
<p>In large part, Abbott has done that, as Twitter has grown significantly. It now has 230 million tweets per day, he said in a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110927/nearly-half-of-tweets-originate-from-mobile-says-twitter-engineering-head/">recent interview</a>.</p>
<p>Twitter does not have a replacement as yet, sources said.</p>

<p>As expected, the European Commission approved Microsoft&#8217;s $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype late last week.</p>
<p>Next, the deal for the popular Internet communications company &#8212; which had previously been cleared by U.S. regulators &#8212; is likely to officially close later this week (<em>paperwork!</em>), said several sources close to the situation. </p>
<p>Now, of course, comes the hard part &#8212; which is whether Microsoft can successfully integrate the more nimble Skype into the belly of the software beast and allow it to thrive.</p>
<p>Some key questions:</p>
<p>How smoothly can Microsoft integrate Skype into its existing products, such as its unified communications platform, Outlook mail and Hotmail, Office, Messenger and Xbox Live? And, perhaps most of all, Windows Phone devices?</p>
<p>That said, will Skype also get to do what it needs for its own success beyond Microsoft? That includes working with mobile rivals Apple and Google, who now dominate the smartphone market, as well as many others. It has already managed to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110821/skype-buys-groupme-for-text-based-chatting-services/">buy GroupMe</a> group messaging start-up for $85 million, just months after its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110509/microsoft-will-announce-acquistion-of-skype-tomorrow-morning/">own acquisition in May</a>.</p>
<p>And can the division &#8212; which will be led by Tony Bates, Skype&#8217;s CEO and now a Microsoft president &#8212; operate successfully located mostly away from the power center of Redmond, Wash.? Skype has a substantial office in Silicon Valley, as well as key engineering units in Estonia and Stockholm. </p>
<p>In that vein, will Microsoft be able to hold on to new talent like Bates and Skype&#8217;s geek squad, all of whom have substantial choices elsewhere? Like a lot of large tech companies, Microsoft is not known for being able to hold on to those who come in from the outside, in large part due to its insular culture of longtime execs.</p>
<p>In other words, how big a welcome will Microsoft&#8217;s other powerful presidents &#8212; such as Windows division head Steven Sinofsky &#8212; give Bates and company?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Zynga is unveiling “brand-spankin’ new play” at a press event today at its brand new headquarters in San Francisco.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-77689" title="020_zynga" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/020_zynga-380x221.jpg" alt="" width="380" height="221" />Yesterday, it hinted that it will share its plans for leveraging Facebook’s new HTML5 mobile platform, but that there are other surprises to come. The event is titled &#8220;Unleashed,&#8221; so expect a lot of talk about where the company is headed with mobile in general.</p>
<p>Stay tuned at 10 am PT to hear the latest from the mega-successful social games company, which is currently seeking to raise $1 billion in an initial public offering.</p>
<p><strong>9:57 am</strong>: Just showed up, expect the show to kick off any minute.</p>

<p>The press conference is taking place in Zynga&#8217;s new headquarters. In the atrium, there&#8217;s a big stage set up, and the press gallery is sitting in a bunch of retro chairs. Feels a little bit like an MTV talk show.</p>
<p>Zynga invited my dog, Fletch, to come play at the event, but he doesn&#8217;t have a travel budget, so he had to stay home in Seattle.</p>

<p>Pretty fitting that Zynga&#8217;s office, a.k.a. &#8220;the dog house,&#8221; has a hot dog stand. As you may know, the company was named after the dog, Zinga, owned by founder Mark Pincus.</p>
<p><strong>10:10 am</strong>: The event may be starting. We are watching an infomercial on how Zynga was able to contribute to Haiti relief after the earthquake.</p>
<p><strong>10:25 am</strong>: Ok, while we waited to get things started I was able to go get a Blue Bottle cup of coffee that takes five minutes to drip into the cup. What a perk!</p>
<p>Someone is getting excited. Just heard my first barking dog.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am</strong>: Here we go. There&#8217;s a montage of games from Poker to CityVille and Adventure World, Words With Friends and FarmVille. You&#8217;ve probably played one of them.</p>
<p><strong>10:37 am</strong>: Founder and CEO Mark Pincus has taken the stage. </p>
<p>This is the first media event of any kind we have done in our new building, he says.</p>
<p>He jokes that they are about games, and we should feel comfortable being loud today.</p>
<p>He said they are launching 10 new products today, all of which have been in development for a year. Today we will meet the people and faces behind the innovation.</p>
<p>Pincus: There are 1,700 Zynga employees in this building alone, and at some point they will come out and say hi to us.</p>
<p>Pincus: He wants to know how he can get &#8220;you guys&#8221; to play games. We are all busy, and how can he get us all to play. </p>
<p>For us, it&#8217;s a platform. We aren&#8217;t the company that will make the next hit game, we are trying to do something broader than that. We want this experience to make up a platform for play.</p>
<p><strong>10:44 am</strong>: Pincus says they spend a lot of time on the &#8220;FTUE,&#8221; or the &#8220;first time user experience.&#8221;</p>
<p>We want to give you a five to 15 minute experience that feels like a meal, we don&#8217;t try to ask you to change your day. Just like a good show, and I&#8217;ve been addicted to &#8220;Breaking Bad,&#8221; if you do like our games, we hope to give you enough depth for you to invest three, six months or a year.</p>
<p>We are going to show off Zynga Direct, whether on the Web or mobile, we are going to build a whole sandbox around the games and not just in the games. Facebook is here today and we are excited to be their launch partner for their platform announced yesterday. We&#8217;ll be showing off three HTML5 games that will be part of that. </p>
<p>When we unveil the pieces of Zynga Direct, we hope that you see that it is the deepest Facebook Connect experience on the Web today.</p>
<p><strong>10:48 am</strong>: We are showing you CastleVille today, which is the next Ville game in our franchise. That game has been in development for more than a year, and it has beautiful art. It has new ways to collaborate and get ahead by partnering with other players in the game. </p>
<p>We are going to show you a new casual games category today in the hidden objects genre. </p>
<p>David Ko, Zynga&#8217;s chief mobile officer, will be showing a number of mobile titles launching in the next few weeks.</p>

<p><strong>10:51 am</strong>: Pincus is now handing over the stage to Cadir Lee, CTO, who is in charge of building out so much of the technology in the back-end.</p>
<p><strong>10:52 am</strong>: Lee: The first thing I want to talk about is our gaming engine, which has been built from scratch on Adobe&#8217;s Flash 11. </p>
<p>We have our own private cloud called &#8220;Z Cloud,&#8221; which is focused on being able to play our games all of the time no matter if it&#8217;s Christmas Eve. We&#8217;ve been known to deploy a 1,000 servers in one week in order to support a new game.</p>
<p>This isn&#8217;t the sexy stuff, but Zynga&#8217;s cloud and gaming engine technology is key. Often, the company is considered an analytics-driven company, rather than a gaming company. Lee is touching on some of this now.</p>
<p>Lee: We&#8217;ve long been known as an analytics company, which shows how our players engage. How do we match people up, so that you can have a social experience with a person across the street or around the world. How do we connect you with the right person at the right time.</p>
<p>Roy Sehgal, VP and GM, is now on stage to unveil a new genre, called &#8220;hidden objects.&#8221; It&#8217;s one that Disney&#8217;s Playdom has developed through a game called Gardens of Time.</p>
<p>Zynga says its first game is called Hidden Chronicles.</p>
<p>The concept behind hidden objects is finding clues hidden in a room, sort of like looking for Waldo. They are right in front of you, but difficult to find. </p>
<p>Up until Playdom&#8217;s release, critics didn&#8217;t believe that the popular PC download category could be made into a social game.</p>
<p>Sehgal: It&#8217;s going to be social. It&#8217;s going to be extremely easy to learn, but hard to master.</p>
<p><strong>10:58 am</strong>: You can play with your friends to see who can find the most hidden objects, or provide hints to your friends. </p>
<p>This game is extremely interactive. No matter how many times you play an individual scene, it will be fresh. I believe it will be one of the most beautiful games you will play. </p>
<p>On the screen, Sehgal is showing various scenes that take place on a train, underwater or in the outdoors. The art is rich and historic-looking.</p>
<p><strong>11:00 am</strong>: Now there&#8217;s a demo of the new Mafia Wars 2, which just launched yesterday, and is promising to be a much richer experience than the original version that came out three-plus years ago. </p>

<p><strong>11:06 am</strong>: Mafia Wars 2 is also now live on Google+, which is the company&#8217;s second game on the platform after Poker. Remember, Google has a substantial stake in Zynga.</p>
<p><strong>11:07 am</strong>: There&#8217;s an update to Zynga&#8217;s Poker game next. It was launched in July 2007, and after four years, we are still the largest and most social Poker game.</p>
<p>Zynga is unveiling Zynga Casino, including Zynga Bingo.</p>
<p>Casino games has been identified as one of the leading categories on Facebook with others experiencing lots of success, including DoubleDown Casino. </p>
<p>Zynga Bingo will be launching soon.</p>
<p><strong>11:10 am</strong>: Bill Jackson, Creative Director, is now on stage. He&#8217;s from the company&#8217;s Dallas studios, and he says they developed the latest in the Ville franchise, called CastleVille.</p>
<p>The other Villes in the franchise are FarmVille, FrontierVille, CityVille and now CastleVille. </p>
<p>Jackson: It&#8217;s a new level of social, and offers the best of all the Ville games have to offer. </p>
<p>The game has a whole new cast of characters, who look like they are from Shrek, complete with rugged heros and refined ladies who fall in love.</p>
<p>Jackson: CastleVille takes storytelling to a whole new level, and in a personal way. Your journey through the game is different based on who you are.</p>
<p>Zynga is bringing massively mutliplayer role-playing games to the mass market.</p>

<p>CastleVille will have music from an entire orchestra that was recorded in Seattle. Jackson says this is the first time this has been done in a social game, although it is common in console games.</p>
<p><strong>11:18 am</strong>: The peanut gallery has been asked to turn around to see all of the Zynga employees &#8212; or at least half of them &#8212; that have gathered around the balconies of the atrium.</p>
<p>Pincus: We just wanted you to see a few more faces.</p>
<p>Pincus is now introducing John Schappert, who recently joined Zynga as COO from Electronic Arts. He has taken over running all of our games, leaving Pincus to be more entrepreneurial.</p>
<p><strong>11:22 am</strong>: Schappert: We are building every kind of play for everyone, everywhere. </p>
<p>We are building on iOS, Facebook, Android, Google+ and Tencent in China. </p>
<p>Helping us deliver on play anytime, anywhere, is David Ko, chief mobile officer.</p>

<p>Ko has an update on Zynga&#8217;s mobile plans, which have not been as aggressive as others have been in the space so far. </p>
<p>Ko: We&#8217;ve always felt that we need to be the best content creators out there, regardless of what platform.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s my pleasure to not talk to you about one or two new games, but five new games launching shortly. It is around Facebook&#8217;s HTML5 platform announced yesterday. </p>
<p>The first two are Words With Friends and Poker, and the third is FarmVille. All three games will be available tomorrow.</p>
<p>Another new game is Mafia ShakeDown. You&#8217;ll be able to request missions and have the opportunity to be the next &#8220;Don.&#8221; This game will be coming soon, so stay tuned. </p>
<p>The last game is called DreamZoo, which is Zynga&#8217;s first game in the zoo genre.</p>
<p>In a short video, Zynga shows off DreamZoo. You can collect animal varieties and feed and clean your animals.</p>

<p><strong>11:29 am</strong>: Schappert is back on stage. He says they have over 60 million daily active users, and they play games over two million minutes everyday. </p>
<p>He is unveiling something called Project Z, which is a Facebook Connect enabled platform. It allows you to play in an environment that&#8217;s tailored just for games. </p>
<p>In a sneak peak, a video says players are able to chat, share and form instant communities worldwide. </p>
<p>Schappert: It&#8217;s a social gaming playground. You can start a game on Project Z and then continue on Facebook and vice versa. It&#8217;s not launching today, but people can start creating a gamer tag starting worldwide today.</p>

<p><strong>11:32 am</strong>: Pincus is back on stage to wrap up the presentation:</p>
<p>We really want to build a platform for play. We haven&#8217;t changed our vision since starting. We want to be the biggest macro bet on social gaming. We believe in social gaming. We believe that everyone around the world will embrace play, so everything we are doing is an attempt to bring that to life. </p>
<p>We know it&#8217;s early and it&#8217;s primitive, we know so much of game play and social-ness is early, and over the next few years it&#8217;s going to be so much more. It&#8217;s going to be mobile. There&#8217;s going to be a World of Warcraft feeling, but something you can understand in five minutes.</p>
<p><strong>11:35 am</strong>: OK, that&#8217;s it folks. Formal presentation is over. </p>
<p>In summary, before today, there were a few niches that Zynga had not yet entered. That left opportunities for competitors to do well on Facebook. With Zynga&#8217;s 10 announcements today, including a number of new mobile and social games, the gaps have narrowed significantly. </p>
<p>Zynga has expanded into new genres, like hidden objects and more broadly into casino, and has five new games on mobile. It is also launching its all-new standalone online game network separate from Facebook that goes direct to consumers. </p>
<p>If Zynga was looking for a big bang before its IPO, this might have been it. </p>
