<p>In spite of intense criticism against its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120312/breaking-yahoo-sues-facebook-for-patent-infringement/">patent infringement lawsuit</a> in March, Yahoo filed additional claims against Facebook today.</p>
<p>&#8220;Today Yahoo! filed additional claims against Facebook in U.S. District Court in San Jose related to two additional patents on which Facebook infringes. Today&#8217;s filing underscores the breadth of Facebook&#8217;s violation of Yahoo!&#8217;s intellectual property,&#8221; said a Yahoo spokesperson in a statement. &#8220;As we have stated previously, Yahoo!&#8217;s technologies are the foundation of our business that engages over 700 million monthly unique visitors and represent the spirit of innovation upon which Yahoo! is built. We intend to vigorously protect these technologies for our customers and shareholders.&#8221;</p>
<p>Facebook had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120403/breaking-facebook-smacks-at-yahoo-with-patent-claims-of-its-own/">filed its own counterclaims</a> against the Internet portal over various social networking patents and also has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120423/in-pricey-microsoft-patent-deal-facebook-delivers-another-smackdown-to-yahoo-lawsuit/">recently spent hundreds of millions of dollars for patents and licenses</a> from both IBM and Microsoft to bolster its portfolio.</p>
<p>In its filing, Yahoo&#8217;s legal aces got all hot and bothered that Facebook did this, especially the part about handing over piles of dough to others (and not Yahoo). </p>
<p>&#8220;However, on information and belief, Facebook lacks a good faith basis for most, if not all, of its counterclaims, particularly those patents that it purchased from others,&#8221; read the filing. &#8220;All eight of these patents were purchased by Facebook in the past five months, and several of these patents were purchased (independent of any separate technology acquisition or merger) after Yahoo! filed its complaint in this action. On information and belief, many, if not all, of these patents were acquired by Facebook for purposes of retaliation against Yahoo! in this case.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Uh, duh!</em> (Also, not to be picky, but Yahoo also bought a lot of the patents they are asserting way back when from its acquisition of Overture and did not invent all these innovations, either.)</p>
<p>I am awaiting a response from Facebook, which will probably be along the lines of: Byte me.</p>
<p>[<strong>UPDATE</strong>: I was <em>right</em> -- here's the comment:</p>
<p>"We remain puzzled by Yahoo's erratic actions. We disagree with these latest claims and we will continue to defend ourselves vigorously."</p>
<p>(Erratic, by the way, means desperate and pathetic in Facebook-speak.)]</p>

<p>In a deal that was just signed, longtime Silicon Valley exec Shelby Bonnie has sold his social publishing start-up, <a href="http://www.whiskeymedia.com/">Whiskey Media</a>, to Santa Monica-based entertainment and interactive production company BermanBraun.</p>
<p>As part of the deal, BermanBraun will get three key sites of San Francisco-based Whiskey, including video entertainment-focused Screened, tech-testing site Tested, and Anime Vice, which covers anime and manga comics. It will also acquire Whiskey&#8217;s content-publishing platform.</p>
<p>Two other sites owned by Whiskey &#8212; games-oriented Giant Bomb and comic-book database Comic Vine &#8212; will be sold to another media company, which is rumored to be CBS Interactive.</p>
<p>Heaped on top of the niche content, aimed at passionate fans, Whiskey mixes in a lot of social networking, as well as user-generated content, along with its professional fare.</p>
<p>Terms of the deal were not disclosed.</p>
<p>But the major reason for the acquisition is that BermanBraun &#8212; which also makes popular sites for large portals such as Microsoft&#8217;s MSN (the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090205/is-wonderwall-gonna-be-the-one-that-saves-msn/">Wonderwall</a> celebrity site and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100406/will-bermanbraun-and-hachette-give-msn-a-new-glo-with-launch-of-dramatic-womens-lifestyle-site/">Glo</a>, aimed at the women&#8217;s lifestyle arena) and AOL (<a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111215/bermanbraun-to-launch-three-non-huffpost-sites-for-aol/">upcoming sites on weather, men and pets</a>) &#8212; needs to be able to scale its online content production. The Whiskey platform should be able to allow it to more easily grow and create new sites more quickly, as well as mine data across them.</p>

<p>Bonnie, who was once CEO of CNET, which he helped found, added: &#8220;I have had the pleasure of knowing both Lloyd and Gail for years and they are two incredibly high integrity people who bring passion and creativity to the interactive space. As we see a dramatic changes in the whole media landscape, success will demand new skills and talents. BermanBraun&#8217;s content skills and vision joined with the Whiskey platform will create a combination that I believe is without equal. I couldn&#8217;t be more excited for the combination.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Earlier today, I had a trendy San Francisco tea with MSN GM Bob Visse, who came to town to talk about a new site that the Microsoft portal is debuting tonight called msnNOW.</p>
<p>Simply put, it is a way to get them high-twitch youngsters to pay some mind to old, musty portals.</p>
<p>The site, which is offered on multiple platforms from smartphones to tablets to Facebook, tracks the news trends from a variety of real-time sources, and then its editors churn them out for users.</p>
<p>Hey, lookee over here, kids: Drinking diet soda could kill you! And a Philly bakery is charging $55,000 for a cupcake!</p>
<p>You get the idea &#8212; but it&#8217;s actually a lot of fun and an interesting take, as you can see from the screenshot below of the msnNOW page:</p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, longtime Yahoo front page chief Liz Lufkin has parted ways with the company.</p>
<p>The departure last week appears to be related to a reorg by <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110502/yahoo-nabs-jai-singh-from-aols-huffpo/">newish editor-in-chief Jai Singh</a>, who used to run the editorial efforts for the Huffington Post, at the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p>Singh appears to be setting up his own team and, thus, Lufkin was out.</p>
<p>Lufkin has been at Yahoo for many years, most recently as VP of front page programming. In that job, according to one bio, she supervised &#8220;editors in Sunnyvale, Santa Monica, New York and Dallas and consult[ed] to various international Yahoo! sites. Liz&#8217;s group contributed to the successful development of Yahoo&#8217;s pioneering content optimization personalization system, improving the relevancy of Front Page for users and providing new insights on audience behavior.&#8221;</p>
<p>Previous to Yahoo, she had been deputy managing editor at Gannett&#8217;s USATODAY.com and USA Today. She had a similar job at the Hearst-owned San Francisco Chronicle.</p>
<p>Lufkin&#8217;s job at Yahoo is a critical one, given how powerful the front page of the site is, with 600 million unique visitors and billions of page views.</p>
<p>While the portal system has been under siege in recent years, it is still a massive driver of traffic to Yahoo&#8217;s own Web properties and elsewhere on the Internet.</p>
<p>Yahoo declined to comment (but I am right!).</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Yahoo said that it had hired CNET editor-in-chief Scott Ard to take Lufkin&#8217;s place. Ard, who worked for the CBS-owned tech news property for 12 years, will report directly to Jai Singh, editor-in-chief of the Yahoo Media Network. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are lots of movies based on cartoon characters and/or video games, and the majority of them stink.</p>
<p>This one, based on the crazily addictive and popular <a href="http://www.thinkwithportals.com/">Portal</a> games, is great. It&#8217;s also free, and short &#8212; a mere seven minutes long. And really, the last 90 seconds are credits, so you can knock this out very quickly.</p>

<p>&#8220;Portal: No Escape&#8221; comes to us via director <a href="http://dantrachtenberg.com/">Dan Trachtenberg</a>, whose resume to date seems to consist primarily of commercials and some hosting work at Revision3 video podcasts; note that Diggnation co-host Alex Albrecht is billed as one of the guards.</p>
<p>This looks like it went up on YouTube just a day ago, and it&#8217;s getting very popular, very quickly.</p>
<p>Love to know the backstory on this one &#8212; it&#8217;s clearly not something Trachtenberg put together on a whim, but there&#8217;s no indication that there&#8217;s a formal tie-in with Valve here. </p>

<p>AOL CEO Tim Armstrong has certainly had a very busy year, from the continued massive restructuring of the troubled Internet portal to ziggy-zaggy strategic shifts in content and advertising to a series of frenetic acquisitions, capped by the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash">$315 million purchase of the Huffington Post</a> earlier this year.</p>
<p>Also, let&#8217;s not forget all those fabulous appearances with the mediagenic Arianna Huffington.</p>
<p>So, it was nice to get Armstrong to calm down for a minute&#8211;before he headed off for an off-site in Half Moon Bay, Calif., with his senior staff&#8211;and talk about how AOL plans to digest all those things.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s especially important, since Wall Street is still wondering about that, too. A lot, in fact, with AOL shares down 29 percent year over year, which is not exactly a shining endorsement  by investors of Armstrong&#8217;s tenure.</p>
<p>Presumably, he&#8217;ll be explaining it all when the company reports its first-quarter earnings in a week, on May 4.</p>

<p>One of the results of Yahoo&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110419/yahoos-first-quarter-earnings-the-revenue-drought-continues-due-to-search-fall-off/">weak earnings report</a> earlier this week has been the renewal of chatter about possible changes in its leadership and even ownership.</p>
<p>And continued investor discomfort with its troubled stock price&#8211;Yahoo shares are down 7.25 percent year over year and an astonishing 49 percent on a five-year basis&#8211;and the level of renewed grumbling by major institutional shareholders is causing some key players to go back to their PowerPoints to reevaluate various options.</p>
<p>(By way of contrast, Google is down about 4.5 percent year over year&#8211;largely due to last week&#8217;s earnings release with higher than expected expenses&#8211;but still up more than 20 percent for the five years.)</p>
<p>As many might recall, last year Yahoo was under scrutiny by a number of interested parties&#8211;from big media companies to other digital players to private equity firms&#8211;considering a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/could-aol-buy-yahoo-could-news-corp-takeover-2-0-with-a-little-help-from-the-chinas-alibaba">number of takeover scenarios</a>.</p>
<p>Most of them were just talk and no action resulted, but that did not mean that interest went away.</p>
<p>The truth is, they are still out there and ruminating&#8211;this time with what sources describe as a much more amenable Yahoo board, with several of its key members willing to entertain any legitimate offers or ideas to improve the Silicon Valley search giant&#8217;s prospects.</p>
<p>In the last go-round, by contrast, Yahoo&#8217;s top execs&#8211;including CEO Carol Bartz&#8211;denied any interest in the swirl of rumors related to a variety of ideas.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s definitely changed&#8211;at least at the board level&#8211;so here are three very credible scenarios of what could happen:</p>
<p><strong>Peetie, Peetie, Yahoo-Sweetie</strong></p>
<p>Late last year, BoomTown wrote a post about the interest that former News Corp. COO and President Peter Chernin&#8211;who now owns his own entertainment production company&#8211;had in the situation at Yahoo.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/157844079_c3j8p-M-2.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/157844079_c3j8p-M-2-200x300.jpg" alt="" title="157844079_c3j8p-M-2" width="200" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-43020" /></a></p>
<p>As I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101117/enter-the-chernin-former-news-corp-president-and-coo-in-yahoo-what-if-mix">wrote in November</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>But multiple sources from a variety of sides said that Chernin, a well-liked and deeply experienced media and entertainment exec, has been contacted by a number of private equity firms and other investors about his interest in becoming involved should any of the various and sundry scenarios around the Internet giant pan out.</p>
<p>And Chernin, many sources said, has expressed a definite interest in the situation, perhaps because he was deeply involved in a previous deal when running News Corp.</p>
<p>At the time, it involved combining the media giant&#8217;s Myspace social networking site with Yahoo and also Microsoft&#8217;s portal MSN and creating a new company, code-named &#8220;TrafficCo.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Indeed, that interest remains for Chernin, who has also been an increasingly active investor, including in the digital sector. He is an angel funder of the hot social media app start-up Flipboard, and also just joined the board of the popular Pandora music service.</p>
<p>The most likely possible scenarios have him joining with deep-pocketed partners, including Providence Equity Partners and, yes, Microsoft, as well as investment banks or advisory firms, such as Morgan Stanley and Code Advisors.</p>
<p>The approach being considered&#8211;which would only be done in a friendly way, with the cooperation of Yahoo&#8217;s board&#8211;would center on making a large enough investment in its shares, allowing the group to take control of the management and the board, putting Chernin in as chairman and maybe CEO (or with a new CEO&#8211;see next section).</p>
<p>If Microsoft were involved&#8211;and Chernin has strong ties there&#8211;such a scenario might include folding all its online properties into Yahoo and renegotiating its rocky search partnership, too.</p>
<p>This is an idea that intrigues a lot of people&#8211;including current Yahoo board chairman Roy Bostock, co-founder Jerry Yang and other board members&#8211;who have indicated recently to several investors and dealmakers a willingness to listen to credible player such as Chernin.</p>
<p>But, in this scenario, it would be up to Chernin and his partners to make a prosposal, said sources, and he might decide that the complexity of getting the power to make big changes at Yahoo is too big to tackle.</p>
<p>In addition, Chernin remains a successful Hollywood player, with several major television and movie projects in the works, as well as big investment possibilities in Asia.</p>
<p>&#8220;Does he want the headache of Yahoo at this point in his career?&#8221; asked one person, among many Chernin has talked to recently about becoming involved in the company. &#8220;Would you?&#8221;</p>
<p>Maybe so, if it would provide a big financial windfall. Many think an exec with a reputation like Chernin&#8217;s could easily begin to move Yahoo&#8217;s moribund stock upward quickly.</p>
<p><strong>ABC (Anybody But Carol)</strong></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s one truth: Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz does not get proper credit for a number of moves she has made since coming to the company two years ago, including cleaning up the messy corporate structure, de-complexifying garbled systems, cutting costs and bringing its far-flung operations into line.</p>

<p>Yahoo&#8217;s stock is certainly doing better than when she arrived in early January of 2009, when it was in the $12 range compared to its current $16 price point.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s another: That stock price now includes more than $10 in solid assets&#8211;cash and Yahoo&#8217;s much more valuable stakes in China&#8217;s Alibaba Group and Yahoo! Japan&#8211;leaving very little true share appreciation.</p>
<p>And here are more truths: Bartz&#8217;s inability to get revenues growing, innovations flowing, promising start-ups acquired and&#8211;most importantly&#8211;to stop the continual exodus of talent out the door of Yahoo has made her tenure shakier than ever.</p>
<p>Add to that making its relationships with Asian partners more tense, almost no traction in key mobile, video and social arenas, a record of loud public declarations that have fallen flat and serious troubles in Yahoo&#8217;s search and online partnership with Microsoft&#8211;a deal Bartz struck and is charged with managing&#8211;recently highlighted in Yahoo&#8217;s earnings earlier this week.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://blogs.forbes.com/ericjackson/2011/04/20/to-unlock-yahoos-value-bartz-should-take-a-hike/">shareholder activist Eric Jackson</a>, who has long agitated for change at Yahoo, wrote this week in a post:</p>
<p>&#8220;The truth is that investors are fed up with Bartz. Their enmity towards Bartz is palpable when you talk to them. Bartz talked a big game coming into the job and she hasn&#8217;t delivered. It&#8217;s that simple.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, not that simple and maybe not fair, but it&#8217;s also clear that no one thinks Bartz will be re-upped when her contract is up in 18 months.</p>
<p>Thus, it&#8217;s no surprise that ideas of other possible leaders of Yahoo are being contemplated now.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the short list I have made of my choices: Akamai President and Yahoo board member <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110204/exclusive-huffpos-eric-hippeau-stepping-down-from-yahoo-board-as-akamais-david-kenny-steps-in">David Kenny</a>; former Microsoft exec and current Juniper Networks CEO Kevin Johnson; former AOL CEO and current News Corp. digital head Jon Miller; and Nikesh Arora, current Chief Business Officer and sales head at Google.</p>
<p>There are plenty more to pick from, of course, and any could be installed in conjunction with an effort such as Chernin&#8217;s.</p>
<p><strong>AOL Under the Hoop</strong></p>
<p>No good Yahoo scenario plotting can be contemplated without including AOL and its flashy CEO Tim Armstrong.</p>

<p>Armstrong has made no secret of wanting to get ahold of Yahoo properties to apply the strategy he has been trying at AOL to get it moving again.</p>
<p>Which is: To become the premiere digital media company.</p>
<p>Which is actually Yahoo&#8217;s new motto&#8211;although arguably, in word and deed, Armstrong has been much more active in pushing the concept and narrative.</p>
<p>That includes his incessant acquisitions of all kinds of online media properties, including the big fish&#8211;the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash/">$315 million purchase of the Huffington Post</a> and the coronation of its even-flashier co-founder Arianna Huffington as content chief.</p>
<p>Armstrong has certainly not been averse to the idea of a Yahoo-AOL hookup with him at the top, and has been actively talking to anyone interested in such a deal.</p>
<p>And things could get a lot more interesting if AOL linked with a bigger strategic partner, such as News Corp. or Disney or even Google, Armstrong&#8217;s former stomping grounds.</p>
<p>Still, wishing does not make it so, especially with a much smaller and weaker set of assets than Yahoo and a still poor record on goosing its advertising sales.</p>
<p>AOL&#8217;s stock is down 30 percent year over year, as investors still worry about Armstrong&#8217;s ability to turn the company around, which kind of puts him in the same situation as Bartz.</p>
<p>&#8220;AOL is waiting under the hoop for whatever happens, which is a good place to be,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;Why not?&#8221;</p>
<p>Why not, indeed&#8211;so, let the games begin.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, he <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110403/sb-nation-sacks-aol-in-raid-of-former-engadget-team-for-competing-new-tech-site">hired away eight staffers from AOL&#8217;s Engadget</a> in order to create a competing tech news and gadget reviews site.</p>

<p>And now, according to sources close to the situation, the former AOL content head is close to hiring another former top AOL media exec, Marty Moe (pictured here), to manage it and also more niche sites the blog network is contemplating launching.</p>
<p>Sources said the hiring of Moe is not yet complete, but is close to being struck.</p>
<p>Tyler Bleszinski, SB Nation&#8217;s founder and sports editorial director, will continue to manage the start-up&#8217;s sports blog network, while Moe will focus on the company&#8217;s tech vertical and any other future categories.</p>
<p>Moe <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100823/top-aol-media-exec-marty-moe-to-depart-other-rumors-of-david-eun-ankling-not-so-much">left AOL less than a year ago</a>, after nine years working at the New York-based portal, including with Bankoff.</p>
<p>Both had been involved in the purchase of Weblogs Inc., which included the flagship Engadget site.</p>
<p>Now, it seems they will be trying to remake the concept of a content network, although in a more entrepreneurial and innovative setting.</p>
<p>The new tech site&#8211;which is still unnamed and will be helmed editorially by outgoing Engadget Editor in Chief Josh Topolsky&#8211;will debut some time in the fall. It is the first content expansion at the Washington, D.C., SB Nation, which has heretofore been exclusively focused on sports.</p>
<p>Topolsky will be joined by former Engadget managing editor Nilay Patel and also former staffers Paul Miller, Joanna Stern, Ross Miller, Chris Ziegler, Justin Glow and Dan Chilton.</p>
<p>All of the above had left Engadget in a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110312/engadgets-top-editors-topolsky-and-patel-exit-from-aols-giant-tech-site">series of departures of late</a>, all due to increasing unhappiness with AOL&#8217;s management and content strategy.</p>
<p>Paul Miller and Ross Miller, who are not related, both stated publicly that they did not like the editorial direction AOL was going in, especially a controversial content strategy document titled &#8220;The AOL Way.&#8221;</p>
<p>New AOL content head Arianna Huffington has shifted toward a more journalistic path, but the talent bleed began before AOL&#8217;s $315 million purchase of the Huffington Post.</p>
<p>Many new upstart content sites such as SB Nation have begun to try to eat away at the big portal&#8217;s content strategy&#8211;pushed by its CEO Tim Armstrong&#8211;with perhaps more nimble efforts of their own.</p>
<p>And those smaller companies are also well funded.</p>
<p>SB Nation completed a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101108/sb-nation-raises-10-5-million-in-khosla-ventures-led-series-c-round">$10.5 million Series C venture round</a>, led by Khosla Ventures, in the fall.</p>
<p>It had already raised about $13 million in total funding from Accel Partners, Allen &#038; Company and Comcast Interactive Capital, as well as from angel investors such as Ted Leonsis and others in Silicon Valley.</p>

<p>Wayn will be working for Chief Product Officer Blake Irving  and will be responsible for product management of Yahoo&#8217;s local &#8220;horizontal.&#8221;</p>
<p>He will work closely with whoever Yahoo finds as a replacement for <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110315/after-ad-changes-yahoo-media-unit-gets-a-management-shakeup/">Matt Idema</a>, a longtime Yahoo exec who shuttled over to Facebook as a director of business operations, working on the local arena.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110315/after-ad-changes-yahoo-media-unit-gets-a-management-shakeup/">Luke Beatty</a>, who heads up Yahoo&#8217;s Americas region community and local businesses, including Flickr, Groups, Answers and hundreds of local sites, is doing Idema&#8217;s job for now within Americas head Ross Levinsohn&#8217;s unit.</p>
<p>Local is a hugely hot space right now, with a spate of Web focus from giants like Google and Facebook to powerful start-ups such as Foursquare and Groupon.</p>
<p>Wayn has more recently been working on international for Microsoft&#8217;s MSN portal. The Australian native has also worked at AOL and, interestingly, has an actual medical degree.</p>

<p>Flixster&#8211;the popular social movie site whose brands include the Rotten Tomatoes premium reviews site, as well as BuddyTV&#8211;is in early acquisition talks with several suitors, including Yahoo, said sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>The price being discussed for the San Francisco-based start-up is between $60 million and $90 million, said several sources, in talks that are &#8220;substantive.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nonetheless, any acquisition negotiations could always fail. In fact, Flixster held advanced discussions in late 2007 with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071204/flixster-for-sale-again/">IAC/InterActiveCorp</a>.</p>
<p>Along with Yahoo, which is interested in bringing in a strong team to bolster the entertainment offerings of the Silicon Valley Internet portal, sources said several media giants are also eyeing Flixster in order to strengthen their ties to entertainment consumers. Likely candidates in this regard include Disney and Warner Bros.</p>
<p>Interestingly, one of Flixster&#8217;s <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100104/first-ma-of-2010-flixster-rotten-tomatoes/">big shareholders is News Corp.</a>, which traded its Rotten Tomatoes unit for a 20 percent stake in the combined entity a little over a year ago.</p>
<p>But its minority stake gives News Corp. little influence over Flixster&#8217;s fate, although its IGN gaming unit head Roy Bahat is on the Flixster board. News Corp.&#8211;which has been shedding Web properties, such as its current effort to sell MySpace&#8211;is not bidding for Flixster.</p>
<p>But the interest in the site by Yahoo and others is obvious.</p>
<p>Flixster has attracted a huge online audience, which trades all kinds of recommendations, ratings, news and even post user-generated movie reviews on the Web site and via widgets on social networking sites, mostly on Facebook. Its recent mobile app efforts have been successful.</p>
<p>Co-founded in 2006 by CEO Joe Greenstein and CTO Saran Chari, Flixster has raised $7 million in funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners and Pinnacle Ventures, as well as garnering angel investments, such as from Silicon Valley entrepreneur and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman.</p>
<p>The combination with Rotten Tomatoes and its more robust Web presence made a lot of sense. It features mostly premium content, including professional reviews, trailer videos and news.</p>
<p>The site is famous for its clever fresh and rotten tomato rating system for movies.</p>
<p>A Yahoo spokeswoman declined to comment and I have not received a response from emails sent to Greenstein.</p>

<p>No, it&#8217;s not the mall. It&#8217;s Facebook.</p>
<p>So, could the social network also be the place you go to shop?</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-3524" title="shoppingmall_logo" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/shoppingmall_logo.png" alt="" width="239" height="79" />Christian Taylor, the CEO of Payvment, believes it is only a matter of time.</p>
<p>Payvment launched a Facebook Mall two weeks ago, where consumers can shop among 50,000 retailers and add items to a single shopping cart. Payvment is signing up around 300 new storefronts daily and has roughly 1.2 million items in the mall today.</p>
<p>Taylor doesn&#8217;t tread lightly when on the subject.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook is the perfect storm to become the largest shopping portal on the planet,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think it’s a no-brainer that e-commerce on Facebook will be huge. Amazon is so big because of its traffic, and Facebook blows it away.&#8221;</p>

<p>Taylor&#8217;s interest in social shopping developed by accident.</p>
<p>Pre-Payvment, Taylor was the president of Xcreative Interactive, a company that was building Facebook pages for large entertainment and media brands. He said it was very successful and had huge clients such as Disney and Lionsgate.</p>
<p>But there was one big problem.</p>
<p>The pages would always garner millions of fans, &#8220;but we could never get them to buy a DVD or a movie ticket. It was very hard to convert off the network,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s when they saw an even  bigger opportunity to build e-commerce services for small and medium sized business. The employees voted to shut down the company and move from New York to Palo Alto.</p>
<p>That was almost two years ago.</p>
<p>After the move, it developed a framework that allowed companies to build e-commerce capabilities into their Facebook pages as a separate tab.</p>
<p>While it attracted thousands of merchants, he said there was a problem with that, too.</p>
<p>&#8220;Even if you have 5,000 fans, at the end of the day, you are only selling to 5,000 fans,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It took us four months to discover that there’s something wrong here. You needed a way to be discovered.&#8221;</p>
<p>Enter the mall and the single check-out experience across multiple brands.</p>
<p>Already, the difference has been noticeable, Taylor said.</p>
<p>Before the mall went live on Feb. 24, about 3,000 of its 60,000 merchants were regularly selling items, or roughly five percent. &#8220;When I tell you it was night and day, I can say that [sales] quadrupled the day we flipped the switch on the mall.&#8221;</p>
<p>Should Amazon or other e-commerce leaders be scared of Facebook&#8217;s ability to garner a very large audience?</p>
<p>Taylor: &#8220;If they are not, they should be.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The really scary part for the old regime should be that people return to Facebook daily and spend more time on Facebook than any other Web site on the net&#8230;.We are turning Facebook into the largest shopping mall on the planet.&#8221;</p>
<p>The threat is clearly not imminent. Today, Amazon, eBay and other retailers that have gone online, like Best Buy and Target, have large audiences themselves.</p>
<p>They are also <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101229/retailers-sing-the-merits-of-social-local-and-mobile-in-2010/">experimenting with ways to make shopping more social</a>, as we&#8217;ve reported before, but generally <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101229/web-commerce-isnt-really-social-yet/">e-commerce has failed to become very social</a> yet.</p>
<p>However, Payvment believes with the social graph acting as the center of the shopping experience, it can take it to another level. Visitors to the mall &#8220;like&#8221; individual items to surface them to the top. It&#8217;s also much easier to shop for a birthday or Christmas.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3527" title="payvmentfacebookmall_logo" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/payvmentfacebookmall_logo-275x94.png" alt="" width="275" height="94" />So far, Payvment&#8217;s Shopping Mall on Facebook has attracted 9,015 monthly active users and 568 &#8220;likes.&#8221; While Payvment claims to work closely with Facebook, it has no direct ties or arrangements with the social network.</p>
<p>The company also doesn&#8217;t make any money yet.</p>
<p>Its platform is entirely free, and anyone that adopts the platform right now will be grandfathered in for life. In return, they are asked to provide feedback.</p>
<p>To date, the company has raised $8 million in capital from Sierra Ventures and BlueRun Ventures. It has 20 employees.</p>

<p>Despite all the polite throat-clearing in the various internal memos coming out of AOL today, with a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110224/post-huffpo-an-aol-reorg-heres-the-internal-memo/">rejiggering of its content management</a>&#8211;including the [elimination of the job] of Media and Studios President David Eun [from the original one he had been appointed to by AOL CEO Tim Armstrong earlier this year]&#8211;what is really happening is what sources said will likely be a [drastic rejiggering of] more recent strategies of how to run its media business.</p>
<p>That is likely to begin with the hip-checking of [a controversial, if miscontrued, internal document titled] &#8220;The AOL Way,&#8221; which many sources tell BoomTown was [sponsored by Armstrong and created to stress best new media practices, including to garner better traffic], once the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash">$315 million acquisition of the Huffington Post</a> is completed.</p>
<p>[Whatever the original intent of "The AOL Way," it was badly received both inside and outside the New York-based company, thought of as too focused on SEO and not as much on creating the kind of high-quality journalism loudly touted by Armstrong.]</p>
<p>And that could mean a new and [perceptually journalistically friendly] direction forged by its the Web site&#8217;s Co-founder and new AOL editorial chief Arianna Huffington will take place.</p>
<p>In fact, much of what has [been put into place since Armstrong took over, from an editorial perspective at least,] is being questioned and reevaluated.</p>
<p>While what exactly that means is still being formulated by Huffington and others at AOL, it will likely not be using most of the mostly by-the-numbers recommendations of the infamous &#8220;AOL Way&#8221; deck.</p>
<p>Subtitled &#8220;Content, Product, Media Engineering and Revenue Management&#8221; and leaked to the media, it was all about how the struggling Internet portal thinks about its content properties.</p>
<p>Pretty much like cows to be milked, which has caused endless hand-wringing among the editorial troops at AOL. [While it might have been intended as a "best practices" memo for new media], this should come as no surprise, given damn-the-journalists-full-speed-ahead tone and SEO-overboard themes.</p>
<p>As reported by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-aol-way">Silicon Alley Insider on February 1</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>* AOL tells its editors to decide what topics to cover based on four considerations: Traffic potential, revenue potential, edit quality and turn-around time.</p>
<p>* AOL asks its editors to decide whether to produce content based on &#8220;the profitability consideration.&#8221;</p>
<p>* The documents reveal that AOL is, when the story calls for it, willing to boost traffic by 5% to 10% with search ads and other &#8220;paid media.&#8221;</p>
<p>* AOL site leaders are expected to have eight ideas for packages that could generate at least $1 million in revenue on hand at all times.</p>
<p>* In-house AOL staffers are expected to write five to 10 stories per day.</p>
<p>* AOL knows its sites are too dependent on traffic from AOL.com, and it wants its editors to fix the problem by posting more frequently, with more emphasis on getting pageviews.</p></blockquote>
<p>[It was Eun's job to push the themes in "The AOL Way,' of course, along with upgrading the content business at AOL, which has become its main focus under Armstrong's turnaround effort.</p>
<p>While Eun has added several measures to stress quality journalism at AOL, since he was <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100204/another-googler-goes-to-aol-youtube-boss-dave-eun-replaces-bill-wilson-as-content-boss">brought in from Google</a> with much hype a year ago, having the colorful and influential Huffington as the flagship editorial personality at AOL--paired with trusted Armstrong lieutenant Jon Brod as COO--proved irresistible to the AOL CEO.</p>
<p>Of course, that left Eun without the job he had been hired for, which has now essentially been split among Huffington, Brod and also AOL exec Ned Brody.</p>
<p>And while Armstrong offered him different opportunities within AOL, sources said, with his original position gone in the new regime, Eun declined and decided to depart.]</p>
<p>In his parting email to staff, in fact, Eun continued to stress the numbers achieved under his tenure.</p>
<p>But, at the start, he was clear:</p>
<p>&#8220;With the historic acquisition of The Huffington Post, my role and responsibilities as President, AOL Media are changing. Tim and I have discussed at length how I might continue within the new organizational structure, but ultimately there isn&#8217;t a role that matches what I am seeking to do.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nor, it seems, for &#8220;The AOL Way.&#8221;</p>

<p>Apparently, it&#8217;s not only in Google&#8217;s pond where Facebook fishes for talent&#8211;the social networking giant has recruited Microsoft&#8217;s global advertising head Carolyn Everson as one of its top sales execs.</p>
<p>A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the hiring, after a query this afternoon by BoomTown. Everson will be VP of Global Sales at the Silicon Valley company, although is likely to be located in New York.</p>
<p>The move will surely cause some tensions with the software giant, which is both a prominent partner of and investor in Facebook, especially since Everson was only <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100603/microsoft-u-s-ad-sales-vp-domeniconi-to-depart-while-exec-from-mtv-arrives-to-run-global-online-sales">hired at Microsoft last June</a> after a long search.</p>
<p>Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg addressed that issue in a statement:</p>
<p>&#8220;Microsoft was one of our earliest partners and is still one of our most valued. We have a long and strong relationship that includes search ads on our site, a social layer on Bing search results and a deep and popular integration with Xbox. They are a leader when it comes to unlocking the power of social for their already popular products and services. We look forward to continuing to expand our relationship with them.&#8221;</p>
<p>A Microsoft spokesman declined to comment.</p>
<p>Despite the possible awkwardness between Facebook and Microsoft&#8211;<em>hey, we stole your top sales exec, but you rock!</em>&#8211;the move to Facebook is a big opportunity for Everson.</p>
<p>But, according to sources, the former MTV Networks ad exec had become frustrated by the intense focus on pushing traffic to Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search service from its MSN portal at the expense of premium ad sales.</p>
<p>In addition, with the massive search and advertising partnership between Microsoft and Yahoo now in place, Everson was also not able to offer search advertising from Microsoft to marketers in packages. Yahoo is now in charge of that offering.</p>
<p>Everson will essentially be replacing longtime and well-regarded Facebook ad exec Mike Murphy, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101026/exclusive-facebooks-longtime-ad-sales-head-mike-murphy-to-depart-company">left the Palo Alto, Calif., company</a> last fall. She will report to former Googler David Fischer, VP of Advertising and Global Operations.</p>
<p>But it was COO Sheryl Sandberg, said sources, who was most focused on Everson. In fact, she just &#8220;friended&#8221; Everson on Facebook this week, as did another top ad exec, Tom Arrix.</p>
<p>Having a top exec who is amenable to and well known by Madison Avenue is key for Facebook as it ramps up its business, in anticipation of an IPO next year.</p>
<p>Despite being private, Facebook has recently been valued at between $50 and $60 billion by investors, who have been eagerly buying up shares of the company on secondary markets.</p>
<p>Under Murphy and Fischer, ad sales have been doing well already. Facebook&#8217;s share of online display advertising has more than quadrupled, from about three percent to almost 14 percent of the nearly $9 billion U.S. market, according to a recent survey.</p>
<p>In growing so quickly, Facebook has grabbed ad revenue&#8211;reportedly $2 billion last year&#8211;from old online powerhouses, especially Yahoo and AOL, and is also in a big fight with Google over premium ad sales.</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s surging usage and engagement are the reasons for the increased interest from advertisers, as well as its global growth in both market share and mindshare of consumers.</p>
<p>Thus, the search for a Murphy replacement was far-ranging, and included interest in a number of prominent ad execs from traditional media giants and also ad agencies.</p>
<p>The appointment is a big move for the dynamic Everson, who has mostly worked in the mainstream media for much of her career.</p>
<p>Everson came to Microsoft from a job as EVP of Strategy and Operations for the MTV Networks U.S. ad sales department.</p>
<p>Interestingly, she was also on the short list of candidates Yahoo was once perusing to fill the key U.S. ad sales job after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">Joanne Bradford departed </a> for Demand Media.</p>

<p>He replaces Bob Muglia, a longtime exec who <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110110/head-of-microsofts-servers-and-business-unit-leaving-this-summer">was ousted recently</a> in CEO Steve Ballmer&#8217;s effort to shake things up at the company and stress the company&#8217;s technical expertise.</p>
<p>A 19-year Microsoft veteran, Nadella has most recently led the engineering efforts as an SVP in the Online Services Division, which includes Bing, the MSN portal and online advertising efforts.</p>
<p>&#8220;Nadella brings deep engineering and online services knowledge to $15 billion business,&#8221; said a Microsoft press release just issued.</p>
<p>In related news, Amitabh Srivastava, the SVP in the Server and Cloud Division who runs its Windows Azure cloud and Windows Server efforts, will leave the company. He was considered a leading internal candidate for the top job in the Server and Tools Business that Nadella got.</p>
<p>Both internal and external execs were eyed for the job, but it&#8217;s likely Nadella got it because of his early career in the server arena at Microsoft, as well as his experience running one of the biggest and most complex cloud efforts on the Web at Bing.</p>
<p>Indeed, though his efforts were costly and perhaps even futile, Nadella has had some success in innovating search for Microsoft with Bing, including delivering a well-regarded and quickly evolving product and improving market share.</p>
<p>He also was key in striking Microsoft&#8217;s advertising and search partnership with Yahoo.</p>
<p>He will have his hands full running the Server and Tools Business, which is critical to the company&#8217;s future and its cloud computing aspirations.</p>
<p>Microsoft said Nadella will be in charge of strategy, engineering, marketing and product development for Microsoft&#8217;s server, tools and cloud platform efforts.</p>
<p>&#8220;This includes developing the technology road map and vision to drive adoption of the company&#8217;s products, tools and services, and delivering the company&#8217;s next generation of cloud solutions for business customers,&#8221; Microsoft said.</p>
<p>Delivering such <em>cloudtastic</em> results will be a tall order, of course.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110110/head-of-microsofts-servers-and-business-unit-leaving-this-summer">recent post by New Enterprise&#8217;s Arik Hesseldahl</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;The Server and Tools Business is at $14.9 billion in annual revenue (fiscal 2010) Microsoft’s third largest division behind the Windows/Windows Live Division and and the Microsoft Business Division, both of which reported revenues north of $18 billion in 2010. On Muglia&#8217;s watch sales at STB grew more than 12 percent, and its operating margins went from 31 percent in 2008 to 37 percent in 2010. However, STB is nowhere near as profitable as the other two divisions: Business Division reported operating margins of 63 percent in 2010 while Windows saw 70 percent. Ballmer says in his memo that he&#8217;s eager to see stronger growth from STB.&#8221;</p>

<p>As president of the Server and Tools Business, Nadella will oversee the overall strategy, engineering, marketing and product development for Microsoft&#8217;s server, tools and cloud platform efforts. This includes developing the technology road map and vision to drive adoption of the company&#8217;s products, tools and services, and delivering the company&#8217;s next generation of cloud solutions for business customers.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our server and tools business is one of the fastest growing and most profitable businesses at Microsoft,&#8221; Nadella said. &#8220;I see great opportunity for Microsoft to grow the business and also lead the way in the transformation of enterprise IT. <p>Nadella, 43, has been with the company for 19 years and most recently led the engineering efforts in the Online Services Division, which includes overseeing the technical strategy for one of the largest cloud infrastructures in the world, spanning the company&#8217;s Search, Portal and Advertising platforms.</p>
<p>Nadella joined the Online Services Division in April 2007, and was instrumental in leading the technical efforts for several critical milestones such as the launch of Bing, new releases of MSN, and the integration of Yahoo! across Bing and adCenter. Under his leadership, the Online Services Division has also built a strong engineering organization by attracting some of the most experienced technical minds from within Microsoft and across the industry.</p>
<p>Before joining the Online Services Division, Nadella led Microsoft Business Solutions, which focuses on the Microsoft Dynamics line of enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management products, and spent several years leading engineering efforts in Microsoft’s Server Group.</p>
<p>As announced in January 2011, Bob Muglia, previously president of the Server and Tools Business, will leave the company this summer. Muglia will work with Nadella as he transitions to his new role leading the Server and Tools Business.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Korean video fingerprinting company <a href="http://www.enswersinc.com/">Enswers</a> has acquired <a href="http://www.soompi.com/">Soompi</a>, a San Francisco-based company that runs the largest English-language Korean pop culture (K-pop) community site.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-3268" title="Soompi" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Soompi-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Seoul-based Enswers plans to extend Soompi into a video portal, based on relationships it already has to provide video search and copyright detection technology to Korean content providers.</p>
<p>The plan could be particularly interesting given Soompi&#8217;s audience is international by design, while online video licensing is traditionally not. A large part of Soompi&#8217;s audience is in the U.S., but the company has active members in more than 50 countries.</p>
<p>Soompi founder Susan Kang will remain with the site as chief evangelist, while CEO Joyce Kim will move on. Other terms of the deal were not disclosed.</p>
<p>Soompi has 1.4 million uniques and 22 million page views per month. It started as Kang&#8217;s personal Web site in 1998. With Kim at the helm, the company took seed funding in February 2010 from Softbank Ventures Korea.</p>
<p>Kim said she is likely to found another Web start-up. She hails from a family of tech entrepreneurs, including Jared Kim (her younger brother) of WeGame and Jason Calacanis (her brother-in-law) of Mahalo.</p>
<p>Enswers, which was founded in 2007, noted that this is the first time a Korea-based company has bought a Silicon Valley start-up to expand into the U.S. market.</p>

<p><strong>Update, 10:17 am ET:</strong> The intro is still going on. RIM Vice President Alec Taylor is talking about the Cuban Missile Crisis for some reason. However, RIM was nice enough to pass out slides for the whole day. Here are some of the highlights:</p>
<p><strong>BlackBerry Mobile Voice System</strong><br />
Launching in early 2011, this is an update to RIM&#8217;s effort to unify the desk and mobile phone, offering a single identity, voiceover Wi-Fi calling, a single voicemail box, dialing office extensions and more. RIM says the new version will support more types of business phone systems.</p>
<p>Other features coming later this year include automatic hand-off from Wi-Fi to mobile networks, a &#8220;move call from desk&#8221; feature and more. </p>
<p><strong>BlackBerry Balance</strong><br />
A new effort to support mixing personal and corporate data on the BlackBerry. RIM is adding features such as the ability for IT to choose to wipe only corporate information from a device or to limit users from cutting work data and pasting it into a personal application or email. Other features include warnings when sending emails or calendar invites outside of the organization, the ability to encrypt media cards and options for preventing access to work data by third-party applications.</p>
<p><strong>BlackBerry client for Microsoft SharePoint</strong><br />
Launching in early 2011, this will bring data from Microsoft&#8217;s portal software directly to BlackBerry handhelds. It will work with both the 2007 and 2010 versions of SharePoint and integrates into a number of BlackBerry programs, including E-mail, calendar, Documents To Go and the browser.</p>
<p><strong>PlayBook</strong><br />
As for the forthcoming tablet, RIM says it will ship with 1GB of memory, have 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of flash memory, include a 3-megapixel front-facing and 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and have micro USB and Micro HDMI ports. (I can&#8217;t remember if they have said all of that before.) The slides say only that it will ship this quarter and will be &#8220;competitively priced,&#8221; reiterating past company positioning.</p>
<p>According to the slides, the company also plans to talk about cloud-based device management and changes to allow one BlackBerry server to support multiple corporations.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am ET:</strong> The Cuban Missile Crisis is apparently over, and VP Pete Devenyi is now outlining the company&#8217;s business product road map and making the pitch for its strategy.</p>
<p>“We really do have a great story,&#8221; he says, noting that the enterprise is different from the “arms race” of the consumer market.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not just about the number of apps in App world,&#8221; he says, noting that businesses can and are building programs just for use within the corporation. Some businesses, he says, have hundreds of internal apps, none of which show up in the public storefront. BlackBerry, he says, also allows businesses better control than rivals over what programs are on a worker&#8217;s device. For example, Devenyi says, when workers change groups within a company, the programs they have access to can be updated automatically with programs deleted and added from their devices.</p>
<p>“That kind of power is power that no one else has,&#8221; he says. &#8220;We don’t read about that much.”</p>
<p><strong>10:43 am:</strong> In addition to both the paid BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the slimmed-down free &#8220;Express&#8221; version of the server, RIM plans to launch an email system aimed directly at small-to-midsize businesses&#8211;MDaemon Messaging Server, BlackBerry Edition. The idea is to give smaller businesses a full email server that has full BlackBerry support. The product stems from an acquisition RIM made a year or two ago and offers what RIM says are features similar to Microsoft&#8217;s Exchange Server but at a fraction of the price.</p>
<p>The company is also launching &#8220;very, very soon&#8221; a modest update to its flagship server product, BlackBerry Enterprise Server 5.0.3. It will add more support for employee-owned devices (including the BlackBerry Balance feature described earlier), support for encrypted attachments and certification for Microsoft&#8217;s Office Communications Server 2007 R2 and the latest version, known as Lync 2010. </p>
<p><strong>11:18 am:</strong> RIM is launching yet another server this year, known as the BlackBerry Enterprise Application Middleware (BEAM). BEAM, which companies would have to buy in addition to their BlackBerry email server, aims to streamline enterprise content for use on a BlackBerry. &#8216;What that results in is a much more efficient application than you would otherwise have,&#8221; Devenyi says. It&#8217;s in beta now, he adds.</p>
<p><strong>11:25 am:</strong> BlackBerry is launching its equivalent of Find My Phone, known as BlackBerry Protect, which will allow individuals to remotely wipe or post a message if a device is lost. Protect will launch later this year, Devenyi says.</p>
<p>Finally, the company is talking about a number of changes it is making to the core BlackBerry Enterprise Server so that it can run via the cloud. Launching later this year, RIM will have the ability for its server product to be remotely hosted and support more than one business. It&#8217;s not clear yet if this will be RIM offering BlackBerry as a cloud-based service or if this is a product for hosting partners, though it sounds more like the latter.</p>
<p><strong>11:32 am:</strong> Devenyi told Mobilized that the company is just showing the architectural changes it is making, not saying how it will bring the cloud-based capabilities to market. &#8220;We&#8217;re still working through a number of those details ourselves.&#8221; Devenyi said. &#8220;It could be both, but we are not announcing.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>11:42 am:</strong> On to the PlayBook finally. Senior Product manager Ryan Bidan gives the spiel. He says there is a lot that the company isn&#8217;t ready to share. Addressing <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110113/rim-dont-worry-about-playbooks-battery-life/">concerns around battery life</a>, Bidan notes the PlayBook has a 5300-miliamp battery, but doesn&#8217;t give specifics on how much battery life that will translate to.</p>
<p>&#8220;We’ll have good battery life,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Don’t worry about the battery life.&#8221;</p>

Software updates will be pushed down to the device on an ongoing basis. There will be a version of App World on the device for downloading developer-created programs.</p>

<p><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/amazonappstorehomepage-275x142.jpg" alt="" title="amazonappstore" width="275" height="142" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1237" />Developers will be able to upload apps&#8211;including games and other digital content&#8211;to Amazon, which in turn will promote and distribute them on Amazon.com and also on mobile phones. (I can hear the promotions now: &#8220;If you liked that app&#8230;what about this one?&#8221;)</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amazonappstoredev.com/2011/01/introducing-the-amazon-appstore-developer-portal.html">In a blog post aimed at developers</a>, Amazon writes that it&#8217;s trying hard to get developers recognized among the hundreds of thousands of apps out there: &#8220;Amazon’s innovative marketing and merchandising features are designed to help customers find and discover relevant products from our vast selection, and we’re excited to apply those capabilities to the apps market segment.&#8221;</p>
<p>For the past few months, Amazon employees have been reaching out to developers to find out pain points and drum up support for this day.</p>
<p>So far, it looks like Amazon has listened to concerns. The developer portal looks insanely easy to use&#8211;anyone with a regular Amazon username and password can access it. Right now, the annual fee of $99 has been waived, and once you agree to a seven-page app-store distribution agreement, you can start uploading applications to the network, and eventually see metrics on how well they are performing.</p>
<p>Much of it sounds like iTunes.</p>
<p>Amazon will share 70 percent of revenues with developers, and the distribution agreement hints it will go worldwide. For now, it will be limited to the U.S. Amazon will handle all the bill processing, which is complex, especially on a global basis. Google learned this the hard way, and continues to support only paid apps in some countries. Amazon will also have some sort of approval process, but it&#8217;s unclear how rigorous that will be.</p>
<p>Launching an app store is not a stretch for Amazon. It&#8217;s been selling MP3s on phones for some time and has a large digital catalog, spanning books and videos. It also has a built-in payment system and access to tens of millions of Amazon customers, many of whom have their credit card information on file, as with iTunes or PayPal.</p>
<p>The one question is whether the business will provide enough scale for an e-commerce company of its size. After all, most applications today are free, or really cheap. And at least for now, Amazon is limited to the Android operating system.</p>
<p>True, Android is quickly gaining on Apple, especially in the U.S. According to Nielsen&#8217;s latest figures, the iPhone&#8217;s market share is 28.6 percent vs. RIM’s BlackBerry and Google’s Android platforms, which are essentially tied in second place with 26.1 percent and 25.8 percent, respectively.</p>
<p>There are two potential scenarios that will help pencil this out: The app store could help drive more sales of other content or products on the phone for Amazon. A more farfetched scenario is that Amazon does such a good job that other platforms or handset makers, like BlackBerry, Windows Phone, HTC or Samsung, will choose to outsource or adopt Amazon&#8217;s platform for a cut of the revenues.</p>

<p>De La Vega said just after that that the company will have devices on the Apple, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 operating systems. (Update: 12:12 p.m.: While some in the audience, including Mobilized, heard an implication that there would be a 4G iPhone, an AT&#038;T representative said De La Vega was only saying that the iPhone would be part of AT&#038;T&#8217;s smartphone lineup and not suggesting a 4G version.)</p>

The phone, which also packs 1GB of RAM, was launched by Sanjay Jha, CEO of newly split-off Motorola Mobility. one of the more interesting features is the phone&#8217;s optional &#8220;lap dock,&#8221; which allows the phone to power a small laptop capable of running a desktop version of the Firefox browser, among other programs.</p>
<p>AT&#038;T will also have a new phone from HTC that will include a new version of the company&#8217;s Sense user interface and also connect to a new HTCSense.com Web portal.</p>
<p>&#8220;HTCSense.com makes your smartphone even smarter,&#8221; HTC CEO Peter Chou said, demonstrating a feature that lets you ring your phone when it is lost in the house or send a lost-and-found message to appear on a phone you left in a cab.</p>
<p>By building both HSPA+ and LTE networks, De la Vega said that the company will offer more speed and flexibility.</p>
<p>&#8220;More importantly, we will deliver an experience our competitors will not be able to match,&#8221; De la Vega said.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Former <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100204/another-googler-goes-to-aol-youtube-boss-dave-eun-replaces-bill-wilson-as-content-boss/">AOL content boss Bill Wilson</a>, who left the company early this year and landed in September at <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100929/aol-vet-bill-wilson-lands-at-townsquare-media/?mod=ATD_search">radio-station owner Townsquare Media</a>, has been a busy guy.</p>
<p>High up on his to-do list, apparently: Hire a whole lot of people who worked at his old company. Wilson, who is heading up digital for his new employer, has brought on 10 former AOL team members and put them to work building out new sites.</p>
<p>You can see some of the results today at <a href="http://tasteofcountry.com/">Taste of Country</a> , a new music portal meant to compete with the likes of Viacom&#8217;s <a href="http://www.cmt.com/">CMT.com</a>, among others.</p>
<p><a rel="lightbox" href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/taste-of-country.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-26979" title="taste of country" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/taste-of-country.png" alt="" width="380" height="280" /></a></p>
<p>And Wilson&#8217;s group is also launching new local sites for 30 of the 171 radio stations Townsquare operates. They&#8217;re scheduled to overhaul the remaining 141 stations within the next three months.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see if Townsquare has any luck breaking open the market for local Web sales. Radio is traditionally driven by local ad sales (which is one of the reason that Internet radio still hasn&#8217;t really taken off after all these years), but radio-station owners have largely been content to let their Web assets languish.</p>
<p>Wilson&#8217;s team, which is trying to solve that, includes Jared Willig, who used to run Moviefone at AOL; Sun Sachs, formerly VP of design and product at AOL Media; and Pete Schieke, former head of AOL Radio.</p>
<p>Wilson was one of the last high-profile AOL execs to leave after <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090312/aol-gets-a-new-ceo-google-sales-boss-tim-armstrong/">former Google sales boss Tim Armstrong took the reins</a> in the spring of 2009; he has since restocked the company with a long roster of ex-Googlers.</p>

<p>MSN is launching a new health and fitness site called <a href="http://fitbie.msn.com/">Fitbie</a> today, in partnership with Rodale.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s yet another move into niche content sites by the Microsoft portal, similar to those being made by AOL, Yahoo and Demand Media in an effort to dominate key consumer categories.</p>
<p>In a press release, Microsoft said Fitbie was &#8220;similar to lifestyle sites Glo.com and Wonderwall.com,&#8221; which it created with Hollywood&#8217;s BermanBraun.</p>
<p>Fitbie will be powered by MSN, which will sell advertising for it. Rodale is providing both original content and also material from its magazines, such as Men&#8217;s Health.</p>
<p>&#8220;We think we can really bring our content to a much larger audience with this partnership,&#8221; said Steve Madden, VP of Creative Services &#038; Digital Product Development at the New York-based publisher, in an interview yesterday.</p>
<p>Added MSN&#8217;s Scott Moore: &#8220;The premise is to bring best of breed content about fitness and content and our distribution together.&#8221;</p>

<p>Because while those who live in the echo chamber of Silicon Valley are frequently wrong, but never in doubt, a gigantic amount of time is spent being more technical than realistic.</p>
<p>And by &#8220;technical,&#8221; I mean annoyingly detailed in making a point as to completely obfuscate the essence of anything.</p>
<p>Let me explain.</p>
<p>In the middle of yet another dullish release of features&#8211;this time mobile-related&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101103/liveblogging-the-facebook-mobile-event-single-sign-on/">at an event at Facebook HQ in Palo Alto, Calif., on Wednesday</a>, Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder and CEO of the social networking giant, finally livened up the proceedings in the Q&#038;A part at the end.</p>
<p>Ben Parr of Mashable asked a question everyone has been speculating about recently&#8211;whether and when there would be an iPad app for Facebook coming.</p>
<p>A fumbling &#8220;no comment&#8221; would have worked fine, but the real Zuckerberg seemed to have decided to channel the clever Aaron Sorkin-ish repartee of the fictional Zuckerberg in the movie &#8220;The Social Network.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not mobile&#8230;it is a computer,&#8221; he said flatly.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think Apple would disagree with you,&#8221; noted Parr.</p>
<p>&#8220;Well, <em>sorry</em>,&#8221; Zuckerberg spat out, his voice dripping with the kind of sarcasm that only a super-nerdy Silicon Valley engineer can pull off properly.</p>

<p>And, while he quickly backtracked and declared a deep love of Apple products, it was clear Zuckerberg meant what he&#8217;d said and said what he&#8217;d meant.</p>
<p>That the iPad is just another version of the kind of computer he cut his geek teeth on and it is not at all like the mobile smartphones that are now moving squarely into power pole position in the digital universe.</p>
<p>Except, not so fast.</p>
<p>First, the creators of the iPad over at Apple do consider it mobile, and its own often-disdainful leader Steve Jobs has said so on many occasions.</p>
<p>While that does not make it so, of course, imagine if he got up and said Facebook was not actually a social network as much as, say, a glorified portal with more chitchat. Sort of an AOL-Plus!</p>
<p>You could make that argument, although it would not take into account a lot of key elements Zuckerberg did not take into account in his iPad-is-a-computer zinger.</p>

<p>But that&#8217;s not a good enough counter, of course, so let&#8217;s focus on real people using the iPad or tablets like it, such as the Amazon Kindle e-reader.</p>
<p>First, the iPad <em>is</em> a computer, because that is technically true, even though that makes a smartphone a computer too. (And, now that I think of it, my car is a computer.)</p>
<p>But actual civilians don&#8217;t make these kinds of distinctions and, if one spends any time watching consumers use tablets, mobile is entirely how they think of it.</p>
<p>If you want to get technical, I supposed &#8220;portable&#8221; is a better way to describe it, but not in the way a laptop is.</p>
<p>And here are the five simple reasons why:</p>
<p><strong>No. 1:</strong> A tablet is typically carried around like a book or magazine, which are perhaps the most portable of all media.</p>
<p>While it has a hard shell, an iPad has the elements of those much more so than a computer laptop, which is much harder to manipulate, due to its clamshell design and keyboard.</p>
<p><strong>No. 2:</strong> A tablet is largely used via a touchscreen, which allows the device to be intimate in a way a computer never is.</p>
<p>Watch people use a laptop and an iPad in a public setting and you will easily see the relationship is much different.</p>

<p>A laptop is treated more as a work device and an in-a-pinch entertainment player. Like a phone, the tablet is used close in and with no sense of boundaries.</p>
<p><strong>No. 3:</strong> A tablet is largely used as a consumption device, with interactive and inputting elements, while a computer is an interactive and inputting device with consumption elements.</p>
<p><strong>No. 4:</strong> The tablet, like my phone, is always on, with no boot up. It is persistent, while a computer is more periodic.</p>
<p>And a tablet is smaller and thinner than any computer and will only get thinner over time. Again, this kind of form factor makes it more and more a mobile device.</p>
<p><strong>No. 5:</strong> And, even now, as large as the first iteration of the iPad is, it never sits on my desk.</p>
<p>A desktop computer, of course, does. My laptop sits on my desk, plugged into a big screen, and is often unplugged and taken with me when I travel.</p>
<p>But my iPad is <em>never</em> on my desk. Unless it is charging or synching, it is in my bag with my phone and always ready to go.</p>
<p>As in, mobile.</p>

<p>In an interesting brand extension, the popular celebrity and entertainment site Wonderwall has launched a version aimed at the U.S. Hispanic market called <a href="http://wonderwall.latino.msn.com">Wonderwall Latino</a>.</p>
<p>The main Wonderwall site, which is a partnership between Hollywood production company BermanBraun and Microsoft&#8217;s MSN portal that launched in early 2009, now has 11.3 million unique users and 337 million page views a month.</p>
<p>That site is getting a design overhaul, with new features including voting buttons, a dedicated video page and a buzz stream with breaking news and tweets, as well as apps for the Apple iPhone and IPod Touch.</p>
<p>According to an <a href="http://msnblog.msn.com/blogpost.aspx?post=1286a1ce-4c7e-4f9d-a150-822dff39af81">MSN blog</a> on the Wonderwall extension, &#8220;BermanBraun will spearhead the design, programming, and operations of the digital brand. MSN will provide unique content and lead the advertising efforts in partnership with Microsoft and BermanBraun.&#8221;</p>
<p>BermanBraun also recently <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101006/exclusive-new-msnbc-com-bermanbraun-online-political-site-bltwy-launches">debuted a political site called BLTWY</a> with MSNBC.com.</p>
