<p>As most readers know, I love a good internal memo from Yahoo &#8212; and now I have landed a <em>really</em> meaty one. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s the &#8220;Yahoo! Three-Year Product Strategy&#8221; plan, a 21-page report that was completed in mid-2011 by a team headed by former product head Blake Irving.</p>
<p>While it is a year old &#8212; and five CEOs ago (no, <em>really</em>) &#8212; it&#8217;s an important read since it tracks closely to the strategic vision that Yahoo&#8217;s latest CEO <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120925/mayer-to-yahoos-at-not-so-radical-confab-personalization-mobile-rule-of-100-million-and-most-of-all-the-four-cs/">Marissa Mayer discussed earlier this week at an all-hands employee meeting</a> and, according to sources, is very similar to one she seems to be pursuing.</p>
<p>That includes a focus on personalization, mobile, social, improving Yahoo&#8217;s advertising tech platforms and more.</p>
<p>And here&#8217;s the centerpiece of goals &#8212; called &#8220;Five Strategic Elements&#8221; &#8212; from the Irving memo:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>1. <strong>Infuse deep personalization</strong> using science and data into every consumer and advertising experience we build.</p>
<p>2. <strong>Delight our customers</strong> with best-in-class products, iterating frequently for constant improvement.</p>
<p>3. <strong>Build for connected devices</strong> first with localized, in-context, multi-screen experiences in mind.</p>
<p>4. <strong>Power real social relationships</strong> with features that enable 1:few conversations around content.</p>
<p>5. <strong>Build a digital media ecosystem</strong> that creates a premium marketplace for advertising and content and distributes Yahoo! experiences across the Web.</p></blockquote>
<p>Sound familiar?</p>
<p>In fact, at the event&#8217;s Q&#038;A part yesterday, one staffer specifically pointed out that her broad presentation to employees sounded a lot like the one Irving had proposed the year before.</p>
<p>Since that was never truly implemented, due to never-ending management crises, the obvious question was asked: &#8220;Why would things be different this time?&#8221;</p>
<p>Mayer answered that the execution against that strategy wasn&#8217;t good and she would have a better model to pull it off. </p>
<p>The memo, embedded in its entirety below, is really instructive to use as a possible roadmap, outlining Yahoo&#8217;s challenges, as well as the competitive landscape. </p>
<p>Noted the report, quite clearly: &#8220;Yahoo! does not have an audience problem, as we are growing on pace with the Internet. Yahoo! does, however, have an <strong>engagement</strong> problem, as our share of time spent is flat, relative to our competitors.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s aim is to fix that by building the &#8220;One Yahoo! experience, in which each of our current and future products fortifies the whole.&#8221;</p>
<p>Easier said than done, especially in building up its ad tech business, as the report adds, zeroing in on its most potent rival:</p>
<p>&#8220;To defend and grow our share of the premium advertising market, Yahoo! must continue investing to reach parity where necessary and achieve sustainable differentiation against Google with our premium marketplace and technology stack.&#8221;</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a lot more than that, so dig in to the document, which suggest a whole lot of spending to turn around Yahoo.</p>
<p>Since Mayer is well on her way in that department &#8212; including <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120925/yahoos-mayer-finally-parts-ways-with-cfo-tim-morse/">bouncing CFO Tim Morse</a>, who was very bottom-line wary &#8212; more on that, next!</p>

<p>Marissa Mayer, in a move that was not unexpected, has replaced Yahoo CFO Tim Morse with longtime software-focused financial exec Ken Goldman.</p>
<p>When she bounced Yahoo&#8217;s longtime HR exec David Windley in August, just a month into her tenure, I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120810/exclusivr-yahoos-longtime-hr-head-david-windley-out/">noted</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;Several sources at the company said that they expect Mayer to replace almost the entire current executive team, from its CFO Tim Morse on down.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus: <em>Check, please!</em></p>
<p>Morse&#8217;s departure is part of a major house-cleaning by Mayer of many longtime Yahoo execs that she had not hired herself.</p>
<p>Besides Morse and Windley, many others have hit the road, including former interim CEO and media head <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120730/as-expected-ross-levinsohn-departs-yahoo/">Ross Levinsohn</a>, CMO <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120922/former-cmo-spillman-departs-yahoo/">Mollie Spillman</a>, U.S. sales head <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120820/yahoo-sales-exec-wayne-powers-heads-to-advances-parade/">Wayne Powers</a> and former strategy exec <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120805/yahoo-strategy-guru-jim-heckman-leaves/">Jim Heckman</a>.</p>
<p>(In fact, if I were a senior Yahoo exec B.M.M. &#8212; <em>Before Marissa Mayer</em> &#8212; I would be doing a resume refresh about now.)</p>
<p>Sources said she has been looking for a replacement for Morse since she arrived, seeking to put in place her own execs.</p>
<p>That would be Goldman, along with several other recent hires. He comes from Fortinet, a provider of threat management technologies. He has some consumer Internet experience, having previously worked at one of Web 1.0&rsquo;s most exquisite disasters, Excite@Home.</p>
<p>Morse, who was hired in mid-2009 by ousted CEO Carol Bartz, had served &#8212; including as interim CEO &#8212; through a number of major crises at Yahoo.</p>
<p>(On a personal note, Morse has always been a polite, affable and stand-up guy in my dealings with him, even in some very dicey moments and though I most definitely had to have been very irritating to the buttoned-up exec.)</p>
<p>Sources said Morse had been trying to leave the company for some time now, but wanted to get through its board meeting last week before departing. He has been talking recently to a number of companies about moving there.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no surprise, since sources also said that Mayer had been increasingly sidelining Morse &#8212; who had previously been a key player in decision-making at Yahoo &#8212; when making a series of decisions about Yahoo&#8217;s future.</p>
<p>For example, he was not heavily involved in the recent strategic presentation that she <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120925/mayer-to-yahoos-at-not-so-radical-confab-personalization-mobile-rule-of-100-million-and-most-of-all-the-four-cs/">unveiled in very broad strokes to Yahoo employees</a> today.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Yahoo&#8217;s official press release on the CFO switcheroo:</p>

<p>SUNNYVALE, Calif. &#8211;</strong> Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) today announced that Ken Goldman will join the company as chief financial officer (CFO), effective Oct. 22. In this role, he will be responsible for Yahoo!&#8217;s global finance functions including financial planning and analysis, controllership, tax, treasury, and investor relations. Goldman will report directly to Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer.</p>
<p>&#8220;Ken is one of the most accomplished and respected financial executives in the technology industry having served as a CFO for more than 25 years, and we&#8217;re thrilled to have him join Yahoo!,&#8221; said Mayer. &#8220;His track record leading the financial strategy and stewardship of many successful public and private companies makes him an ideal choice for Yahoo! as we enter our next phase of growth.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo! is an iconic brand with an incredibly strong business model and balance sheet,&#8221; said Goldman. &#8220;I believe there is a lot of runway ahead for this business, and I look forward to working with Marissa and the rest of the executive team as we define Yahoo!&#8217;s future.&#8221;</p>
<p>Goldman brings more than 30 years of experience in financial, operational and business management. He joins Yahoo! from Fortinet, a provider of threat management technologies, where he served as CFO. Prior to Fortinet, Goldman spent nearly six years as senior vice president of finance and administration and CFO of Siebel Systems, until the company&#8217;s acquisition by Oracle Corp. in January 2006. He has held CFO positions at Excite@Home, Sybase, Cypress Semiconductor and VLSI Technology.</p>
<p>Goldman has served as a director on several public and private sector boards and has been named among &#8220;America&#8217;s 15 Most Connected Capitalists&#8221; by Forbes magazine.</p>
<p>Goldman succeeds Yahoo! CFO Tim Morse, who has been with the company since June 2009. Morse will leave the company later this fall.</p>
<p>&#8220;Tim has been a trusted leader for Yahoo! over the past three years and has expertly guided the company through some key periods as well as our most important strategic deals,&#8221; added Mayer. &#8220;I&#8217;ve personally relied on Tim&#8217;s knowledge and leadership in my first few months at Yahoo!. <p>This week, I tested Haiku Deck, a free app from Seattle-based Giant Thinkwell Inc. that has the potential to shake up the way presentations are made and shared. It works on Apple&#8217;s iPad, a device most people wouldn&#8217;t instinctively reach for when creating a presentation. Haiku Deck is named after the three-line, 17-syllable, Japanese poem, and like a haiku, it intends to create something beautiful and enjoyable while staying simple. The app can make all sorts of slide shows, from committee presentations to wedding photos. </p>
<p>Though the app is limited to iPads now, by the end of this year, Giant Thinkwell will introduce a Haiku Deck app for tablets running Google&#8217;s Android operating system. And this isn&#8217;t the first app to introduce presentation-making on the iPad; Apple&#8217;s Keynote app, for example, does this, but costs $10 and is much more complex than Haiku Deck.</p>
<p>Simplicity rules in this app. Each slide in a Haiku Deck can have no more than two lines of text, though these lines can be arranged in various layouts. Each slide contains a single full-bleed photo associated with its text. The app offers image suggestions that might best represent keywords in the slide. Images are pulled from over 35 million photos in the legally shareable content site, Creative Commons, using a Haiku Deck algorithm. If you prefer, photos can be pulled in from your iPad, or from networks like Facebook, Instagram, Flickr and Picasa. </p>
<p>Themes are applied to slide shows in one step, simultaneously changing all slides&#8217; font styles and sizes. Themes are limited to five free ones that come with the app and 11 Premium themes that are available for $1.99 apiece. In 20 minutes, I created a slide show about Haiku Deck using the free Cinematic theme. </p>

<p>I had a blast using Haiku Deck and often did so while watching TV with my iPad on my lap. I made a few decks and I was surprised by how simple they were to put together. Friends who saw them thought I took much more time to make them, considering how professional they looked, and were surprised to hear I made them using just an iPad. I shared my work with others using a link people could click on to play the slide show with any Internet-connected device. I played them on Macs, Windows PCs, iPads, iPhones, Android phones and BlackBerrys. </p>
<p>After creating a slide show about getting people involved in a committee that I lead, I compared it with a slide show I made using photos from a Labor Day weekend trip I took to Charlottesville, Va. Haiku Deck was really useful in the committee presentation, where I had no photos of my own to draw from. With that presentation, it prompted me to pull more abstract, clever images to illustrate my points, like a photo of an acrobat for a slide that said, &#8220;Participate in events&#8221; and an image of people diving into a lake for a slide that said, &#8220;How can you dive in?&#8221; </p>
<p>But even when I used Haiku Deck to make a deck of my trip to Charlottesville, the app&#8217;s smart suggestions of photos that might go with keywords in my slides were entertaining to look at and I used several photos from Creative Commons to supplement images I didn&#8217;t have. For example, one night we wandered the University of Virginia campus, but I didn&#8217;t take any photos that came out well in the dark. Haiku Deck suggested a huge list of images related to the keyword &#8220;UVA,&#8221; and I typed &#8220;night&#8221; into the search box to get more specific images. After a while, I did this often to find the right photo.</p>

<p>From the iPad app, I could email decks, share them on Facebook or Twitter or export them as PowerPoint presentations. After looking at a Haiku Deck on the Web, people can download it as a PDF; this feature will eventually also be available on the iPad app. And with a Haiku Deck account, I could make my slide show public, private or restricted, meaning only people who got the URL could see it.</p>
<p>There are downsides to Haiku Deck and Giant Thinkwell is working on fixing some of them. These include adding the ability to play music with slides and extra layout and text options. It will soon add the ability to make two versions of the same slide shows using different themes. The company also plans to add presenter notes.</p>
<p>I also noticed that in Edit mode, where the slides appear in a small tray at the bottom of the screen for easy rearrangement, I couldn&#8217;t see the text on slides, which got confusing as I rearranged similar images from my trip to Charlottesville. The company said this was a design choice to keep the interface uncluttered.</p>
<p>If you want to make a presentation that&#8217;s enjoyable to look at and complemented with images you might not have, Haiku Deck is a smart app that makes beautiful slide shows in no time and makes your iPad a more productive tool. </p>

<p>Walt Mossberg and I have a longstanding rule against PowerPoint presentations at the <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference &#8212; mostly because they usually bore the bejesus out of us and the audience.</p>
<p>So, letting longtime Wall Street analyst turned venture capitalist <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120530/mary-meeker-explains-the-mobile-monetization-challenge/">Mary Meeker</a> loose onstage with a clicker and a mess of slides with to debut her annual Internet Trends report means that we think what she had to say was pretty entertaining and very informative.</p>
<p>And, indeed it was, with a lot of focus on important trends in social, commerce, media and, most especially, mobile monetization &#8212; or lack thereof.</p>
<p>But there&#8217;s more than that, as well as a quick interview we did with the Kleiner Perkins VC about where the digital industry has been in the last decade, and where is it going.</p>

<p>AOL filed an investor presentation with the Securities and Exchange Commission today tooting its own horn, in prep for its upcoming annual meeting in which it is still facing a proxy challenge.</p>
<p>In a nutshell, readying to battle an alternate slate <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120224/like-i-said-aol-activist-investor-file-alternate-slate/">put up by Starboard Value</a>: Our stock more than doubled from all-time lows of last summer; our turnaround is turning; we <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120409/tim-armstrong-sells-his-beachfront-property-microsoft-buys-800-aol-patents-for-1-billion/">sold a buttload of patents</a> that netted us a truckload of cash; and, of course, we&#8217;re not going to settle like <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120513/yahoo-officially-confirms-atd-report-on-ceo-changes-and-proxy-settlement/">Yahoo did with Daniel Loeb of Third Point</a>, because CEO Tim Armstrong&#8217;s resume is fine and dandy, <em>thank you very much</em>!</p>
<p>(Okay, I made up the last one, but I am peckish today.)</p>
<p>In any case, AOL shares have indeed been on a fast upward move since the $1 billion patent sale, up 103 percent in the last six months, to close at $27.61 today.</p>

<p>A month ago, I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120309/here-come-the-first-d10-speakers-new-york-mayor-michael-bloomberg-entrepreneur-sean-parker-zyngas-mark-pincus-and-more-on-the-red-hot-seat/">posted an initial list of speakers</a> for the 10th <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference.</p>
<p>After a decade, the event &#8212; which is held in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., just south of Los Angeles, at the end of May &#8212; has attracted another amazing group of speakers, including: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; serial entrepreneur Sean Parker, who will appear with Spotify co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek; Zynga founder and CEO Mark Pincus; Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz; LinkedIn Chairman and VC Reid Hoffman, who will appear with the social business site&#8217;s CEO Jeff Weiner; and Skype CEO Tony Bates.</p>
<p>Now, here&#8217;s another group of stellar speakers we&#8217;ve added to the programming lineup (and there are still even <em>more</em> big names to come in the weeks ahead): Oracle CEO Larry Ellison; former tech analyst superstar and now VC Mary Meeker of Kleiner Perkins; Intellectual Ventures&#8217; Nathan Myhrvold; Pixar co-founder and Disney animation head Dr. Ed Catmull; and Visa President John Partridge.</p>

<p>Larry Ellison, CEO and founder of the enterprise giant Oracle, needs little introduction, as one of tech&#8217;s highest profile figures and a true Silicon Valley icon. Frankly, I think the short bio that&#8217;s on Oracle&#8217;s Web site says it all: &#8220;Larry Ellison has been CEO of Oracle Corporation since he founded the company in 1977. He also races sailboats, flies planes, and plays tennis and guitar.&#8221; There will be a lot to talk about with the voluble and always entertaining exec &#8212; who appeared at the <strong>D</strong> conference once before many years ago &#8212; from the current state of the tech industry to insights to where it&#8217;s all going. (In addition, Ellison has agreed to appear on a panel we are doing as a tribute to his close friend, Apple&#8217;s former CEO Steve Jobs.)</p>

<p>Another well-known tech figure is Meeker, who is now a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield &#038; Byers, having joined the storied venture capital firm in early 2011. She focuses there on investments in its digital practice and via KP&#8217;s Digital Growth Fund, working with companies such as Spotify, Jawbone and One King&#8217;s Lane. But Meeker is perhaps best known for her long stint &#8212; 1991 to 2010 &#8212; as a star Internet research analyst at Morgan Stanley, where she brought many of the Internet&#8217;s great companies to the attention of Wall Street and beyond. She also wrote a series of groundbreaking reports on the landscape. That includes her annual &#8220;State of the Internet,&#8221; which Meeker will debut this year at the conference in an extended demo of her always riveting Internet trends presentation.</p>

<p>Nathan Myhrvold is also a tech legend, having worked for 14 years as chief strategist and CTO of Microsoft. But, instead of retiring, the avid inventor decided to focus on patents, founding and leading a controversial company called Intellectual Ventures, which buys them up and licenses them out (or sues if it doesn&#8217;t sell). With all the mishegas around patents right now, it&#8217;s a good time to have Myhrvold back to explain it all and perhaps to take some of the blame for the explosion in intellectual property lawsuits. (Myhrvold also co-authored a cookbook, &#8220;Modernist Cuisine,&#8221; so we hope we will also get some sort of futuristic cooking demo. Perhaps, Patently Delicious Flan?)</p>

<p>Speaking of tasty, the animation from Pixar over the years has been just that and it&#8217;s been one of Disney&#8217;s greatest acquisitions. Given how much Pixar has contributed to animation technology, we are glad to finally get Dr. Ed Catmull onstage. As co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios and president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, he will discuss where entertainment and technology are intersecting and where they are not. Catmull is a geek&#8217;s geek in the industry &#8212; having also founded the computer graphics laboratory at the New York Institute of Technology, the computer division of Lucasfilm, as well as Pixar, which he did with chief creative officer John Lasseter. Get ready to talk about image compositing, motion blur, subdivision surfaces, cloth simulation and rendering techniques, texture mapping and the z-buffer. Also, Catmull&#8217;s five Academy Awards.</p>

<p>Lastly, it is perfect timing for bringing on John Partridge, president of Visa. With swirling issues around online identity theft, digital privacy, the future of money and the rise of upstart competitors such as Square, Partridge has his hands full at the credit card giant. One of the most neglected arenas in tech, the way we manage payments is perhaps the biggest story of the next era, especially as it relates to mobile and the rise of smartphones as all-purpose devices.</p>

		<title>Forget Cleantech -- It's Cleanweb at SXSW</title>

<p>Earlier this week, I slogged through the rain in a very dorkish GroupMe plastic poncho at SXSW in Austin to attend what I thought was one of the more interesting sessions, titled &#8220;Why Cleanweb Will Beat Cleantech.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps because it was not yet another creepy location app (memo to Banjo and Highlight users, please stop attempting to get me to allow you to stalk me, cuz I <em>ain&#8217;t</em>!), it was more sparsely attended.</p>
<p>But the presentation by longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur Sunil Paul was a good one, given his premise that current information technology tools were at the heart of creating solutions around energy conservation.</p>
<p>The founder of Brightmail &#8212; and also the first start-up partner of Zynga CEO and founder Mark Pincus at a Washington, D.C., company called Freeloader (where I first met the pair) &#8212; thinks that clean technologies like solar can be better leveraged with Cleanweb, which he defined as the &#8220;application of information technology to resource constraints.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, more Airbnb (fewer hotel rooms mean less carbon emissions), more Zappos (fewer stores, less driving to stores, etc.) and more teleconferencing (that&#8217;s easy to grok) is evidence that the Cleanweb could be an important contributor to saving the planet.</p>
<p>Quoting a recent tweet he saw, Paul noted that a smartphone today has as much computing power as the computers that put a man on the moon, but all we do with them is launch birds into pigs.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am saying we can do something better with the aggressive application of software technology,&#8221; he said. </p>
<p>Actually, those <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120308/rovio-shows-off-angry-birds-space-from-space/">Angry Birds are now in space</a>, too.</p>

<p>The Yahoo board will be meeting in Silicon Valley tomorrow to discuss a wide range of worrisome issues facing the troubled Internet giant.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, several sources said, even more private equity investors are weighing making major investments in the company, all pretty much aimed at ousting said directors.</p>
<p>So far, that has only been <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110908/activist-yahoo-shareholder-takes-aim-at-board/">Third Point&#8217;s Daniel Loeb</a>, whose massive hedge fund now owns 5.1 percent of Yahoo.</p>
<p>Loeb appears tomorrow at the high-profile Delivering Alpha investor conference in New York at 2 pm PT, where he is expected to take another swing at Yahoo&#8217;s board.</p>
<p>His next moves, sources said, could include buying up more shares to put the pressure on and also presenting his own alternate slate of directors, much as activist investor Carl Icahn did several years ago at Yahoo. </p>
<p>Translation: Forget AOL&#8217;s CrunchGate &#8212; this is <em>big-boy</em> corporate battling!</p>
<p>Add that to the pile on Yahoo&#8217;s board meeting agenda, along with some other critical issues that include: Outlining the criteria for any CEO candidate and a discussion of headhunting firms to hire; a review of strategic alternatives, including a presentation by its investment advisors, Allen &#038; Co.; and how to stabilize the company and reassure its dusting-off-their-resumes employees.</p>
<p>Finding answers to these questions is going to be difficult enough, but the ever increasing pressure from outside investors is going to make it even harder.</p>
<p>Some definite tire-kickers reportedly looking at a bid include Providence Equity Partners, Silver Lake, Blackstone, Texas Pacific Group and even KKR.</p>
<p>While KKR has reportedly close ties with Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock, he is now the main target for pretty much everyone else. </p>
<p>That includes Loeb, as well as other major Yahoo shareholders.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no surprise: Bostock, who is also on the boards of Morgan Stanley and Delta Airlines, has presided over a series of gaffes at Yahoo since he became chairman in 2008 (he&#8217;s been on the board since 2003).</p>
<p>Those have included: Yahoo&#8217;s bungled effort to stave off a takeover by Microsoft several years ago; the too-long enthusiasm for CEO Carol Bartz, who was hired in early 2009 and fired last week; sitting unusually still as competitors such as Facebook, Google and more have out-innovated and outgrown Yahoo; and, of course, the falling knife of a stock, which has dropped precipitously since Bostock has been in charge of the board.</p>
<p>As Loeb wrote in a letter he sent to the company:</p>
<p>&#8220;It is time that certain members of this Board were held accountable for its past failures and their individual roles. Accordingly, we insist that Mr. Bostock, who championed Ms. Bartz&#8217;s hiring and led the charge against the Microsoft deal, promptly resign from the Board.&#8221;</p>
<p>Said another source with knowledge of the situation: &#8220;Under Roy&#8217;s leadership, this weak and bumbling board took too long to fire a clearly failing CEO and now has no plan, except throwing up their hands and hoping someone comes along.&#8221;</p>
<p>Here is one certainty: Someone <em>is</em> going to come along and it is <em>not</em> going to be pretty. </p>

<p>Yesterday, David Einhorn of Greenlight Capital dumped his bid to buy the New York Mets.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am disappointed to announce that I will not be purchasing an ownership interest in the New York Mets baseball team at this time,&#8221; said the well-known Wall Street hedge fund manager in a statement. </p>
<p>Why does that matter to tech? Well, because Einhorn has been an active player in the sector of late, including <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110708/yahoo-shares-dip-as-einhorn-sells-off-stake/">buying and then dumping a big chunk of stock in Yahoo</a> earlier this year.</p>
<p>He currently owns slugs of Seagate, Apple, Best Buy and, in his largest holding, almost 15 million shares of Microsoft.</p>
<p>Now, it will be interesting to see if he&#8217;ll put his proverbial eye back on the ball of attacking the company&#8217;s CEO Steve Ballmer, as he had been doing many months ago.</p>
<p>While also maintaining that the stock was undervalued by investors, for example, Einhorn said in May that the software giant had &#8220;Charlie Brown management&#8221; and that Ballmer&#8217;s &#8220;continued presence is the biggest overhang on Microsoft&#8217;s stock.&#8221;</p>
<p>That did not stop Greenlight from adding more Microsoft shares to its holdings, jumping to an ownership stake of 14.8 million shares as of June 30, compared to 9.1 million shares at the end of the previous quarter.</p>
<p>Now that he has more time on his hands post-Mets, will Einhorn renew his Ballmer criticism?</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll see soon enough, as well as what Microsoft&#8217;s own outlook is, at its annual <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/investor/Events/FAM/2011/default.aspx">Financial Analyst Meeting</a> later this month in Anaheim. </p>

<p>Apparently, reassurances about its relationship with Chinese partner Alibaba Group and some lively presentations by top execs at a six-hour investor day yesterday did almost nothing for Yahoo shares. </p>
<p>The stock of the Silicon Valley Internet giant continues to stay mired on either side of $16 a share today, as it has been since it got into a very public fight with Alibaba over the spin-out of its Alipay online payments unit. </p>
<p>Alipay <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110526/alipay-gets-its-license-to-operate-in-china">got its license from the People&#8217;s Bank of China</a> today, due in part to moving the unit to the ownership of Alibaba founder and CEO Jack Ma, but that also did squat for Yahoo shares. </p>
<p>Also dragging the stock down: An IDC report released today that shows that Yahoo has lost its number-one display advertising title to Google. The search giant&#8217;s share of that market in the U.S. rose to 14.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010, while Yahoo&#8217;s declined to 12.3 percent.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not good news, even though both Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Product Officer Blake Irving and its U.S. media and advertising head Ross Levinsohn both gave energetic presentations at Yahoo&#8217;s investor day yesterday.</p>
<p>The two execs&#8211;one sporting a natty blazer and the other his patented hair-tastic &#8217;do&#8211;trotted out a lot of can-do stats and fancy plans for the audience, which was mostly preoccupied with Yahoo&#8217;s China problem.</p>
<p>In contrast, CEO Carol Bartz, CFO Tim Morse and co-founder Jerry Yang were mind-numbingly rote on that thorny issue, noting that negotiations with Alibaba were ongoing and would remain private. </p>
<p>(<em>As if</em>&#8211;if I have anything to say about it!)</p>
<p>Bartz told the group of investors and Wall Street analysts yesterday that Yahoo &#8220;really believe[s] we are working towards protecting the value of Alibaba Group. The emphasis is on discussion. [We're] not going to get into a public back-and-forth.&#8221;</p>
<p>Having already done that in a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110513/dear-yahoo-board-your-investors-are-on-line-2-and-theyre-not-happy/">ham-handed way the week before</a>, that&#8217;s probably a most excellent idea for the shoot-from-the-hip exec. </p>
<p>In any case, investors don&#8217;t seem to want to take Bartz&#8217;s word for any of it until she delivers&#8211;both a China solution and, more importantly, turbocharging of both its core search and display advertising businesses.</p>

<p>According to several sources close to the situation, Apple CEO Steve Jobs&#8211;who is on a health-related leave from the company&#8211;is definitely considering an appearance at its big iPad 2 event tomorrow.</p>
<p>But the possibility&#8211;which would be a big sensation at the San Francisco gathering and has been subject to great speculation&#8211;is also just as definitely not confirmed as yet, stressed sources.</p>
<p>If he did appear, sources said, Jobs would make at least a brief appearance on stage along with other top company execs in showing off Apple&#8217;s latest version of it hugely popular tablet.</p>
<p>The new device reportedly has a sleeker look, as well as a camera and other improvements, changes that tech&#8217;s top showman would certainly love to tout and that his legions of fans would like to see him introduce.</p>
<p>But what BoomTown would like to see would be more of a focus on the iPad 2 itself, rather than armchair diagnoses of Jobs&#8217;s fitness based on any appearance he might make.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no small thing, given the appalling series of photos and video that have surfaced recently, which show the Silicon Valley icon from the worst possible angle and looking quite gaunt.</p>
<p>As I have written before, and as you can see from the photo above taken at last year&#8217;s <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference interview, it is clear Jobs has suffered due to his bout with a form of pancreatic cancer.</p>
<p>Due to nutritional issues, his weight has suffered, one of the key reasons Jobs seems to have taken this latest leave.</p>
<p>That said, in recent weeks, he has made all kinds of public appearances both at Apple&#8217;s Cupertino campus and in Silicon Valley restaurants, including a high-profile dinner with President Barack Obama. Jobs sat immediately to the left of the president.</p>
<p>If he decides to make another outing tomorrow, it is certainly with the knowledge that everyone will be trying to figure out his health from a stage appearance.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a risk for Jobs, of course, who relishes in introducing Apple products in presentations that typically garner well-deserved accolades.</p>
<p>Given how innovative most of those products are, what would be a welcome change in the coverage of Jobs&#8217;s personal struggles would be to show a level of respect to him by paying more attention to what bells and whistles the iPad 2 has rather than to how his jeans are fitting.</p>
<p>There is no question, with its latest iteration, Apple is making sure consumers realize that it is coming out with a second, flashier version, even before other manufacturers&#8211;mostly using the new Honeycomb version of Google&#8217;s Android mobile operating system&#8211;are still scrambling to get their initial competing devices to market.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s the truly dramatic story to watch here, rather than needlessly rubbernecking about the struggles of one man&#8211;albeit, a very significant man&#8211;to regain his health.</p>

Here&#8217;s how it&#8217;s doing that: A hand-holding how-to video, which walks through everything from pricing to dealing with angry users.</p>
<p>The tutorial, which runs 40 minutes, is up on YouTube, but it&#8217;s unlisted and is only accessible via a private link. Thanks to a helpful reader, I&#8217;ve been able to watch it myself, and I&#8217;ve uploaded it at the bottom of this post so you can see it, too.</p>
<p>But it is 40 minutes long&#8211;and most of you don&#8217;t need to watch all of it. Here&#8217;s what you need to know if you&#8217;re interested in advertising, technology and Twitter&#8217;s first attempts at making real money:</p>
<p><strong>Promoted Tweets, Twitter&#8217;s first big ad product, hasn&#8217;t taken off.</strong><br />
Instead, at least for now, Twitter is pushing customers to spend most of their money on <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100927/exclusive-want-twitter-to-help-you-find-more-followers-pay-up-for-a-promoted-account/">Promoted Accounts</a>, its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110211/twitter-tells-advertisers-to-dig-deeper-promoted-trends-are-going-to-get-more-expensive/">pay-per-follower</a> product it rolled out at the end of last year. Twitter tells advertisers they ought to spend $4 on Promoted Accounts for every $1 they spend on Promoted Tweets&#8211;the original Google-style ad concept CEO Dick Costolo introduced last year. Twitter says that&#8217;s because it&#8217;s a lot easier to buy the former than the latter, because there&#8217;s a lot more inventory available. (And because Promoted Accounts will &#8220;turbocharge&#8221; Promoted Tweets.)</p>
<p><strong>Promoted Tweets should get a big push in the next month or so.</strong><br />
Until now, the only way you&#8217;re going to see a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100413/live-from-new-york-twitter-pitches-ads-to-madison-avene/">Promoted Tweet</a> is if you click on a search term that someone has purchased, or if you&#8217;re using Twitter app HootSuite. But Twitter says the ads will start running in users&#8217; regular &#8220;timelines&#8221;&#8211;the primary Twitterstream they see&#8211;on its own Twitter.com site, by the end of Q1. That&#8217;s going to make them much more visible, and should hopefully help with the inventory problem noted above.</p>
<p><strong>Twitter is telling customers to expect an &#8220;engagement rate&#8221; of 1 percent to 3 percent.</strong><br />
Ad buyers are usually trying to measure success by figuring out how many people looked at or clicked on an ad. Click-through rates for most Web ads are very tiny, and according to an ad buyer who has seen Twitter&#8217;s presentation, the company says a realistic click-through rate is 0.3 percent. But &#8220;engagement&#8221; rates&#8211;which measure when a user retweets an ad, or likes it, etc.&#8211;are supposed to be much higher. My tipster, by the way, says Twitter is requiring new ad buyers to make a purchase of at least $5,000 worth of inventory in order to participate in the company&#8217;s beta tests.</p>
<p><strong>Twitter is warning buyers that some users will have a problem with their ads.</strong><br />
At the end of the presentation (around the 35-minute mark), the company takes time out to coach buyers about &#8220;dealing with negative user feedback,&#8221; which it more or less assumes they&#8217;ll be getting. &#8220;People are averse to change, especially when it comes to advertising, and this type of feedback is to be expected,&#8221; Twitter&#8217;s off-screen instructor explains. The company&#8217;s suggested coping strategy: Don&#8217;t worry! The complainers are an &#8220;extremely marginal percentage of the total.&#8221;</p>

<p>In fact, the only place to really find the Palm brand these days is at <a href="http://www.palm.com/us/">the Palm.com domain</a>, which, while festooned with HP branding, still includes &#8220;Palm USA&#8221; in its page titles. Evidently this is what HP meant when it said the Palm brand would &#8220;move into the background.&#8221;</p>
<p>Judging from Wednesday&#8217;s event, the storied Palm brand isn&#8217;t even a sub-brand of HP. It&#8217;s just a handle for a particular division of the company, though HP insists it&#8217;s keeping it around.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our future strategy is to continue to build the HP brand in the marketplace,&#8221; a company spokesman told me. &#8220;Palm is a great brand that is synonymous with mobile innovation and we are delighted to have it in our portfolio of brands allowing us future options.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a nice enough thought, though it&#8217;s hard to see HP ever reviving the Palm brand in the future&#8211;not after it&#8217;s rebranded the company&#8217;s products as its own and announced plans to use them to build &#8220;the largest installed base of connected users in the world.&#8221; If it succeeds at that, will Palm really be a future branding option? Doubtful.</p>
<p>In that sense, Wednesday&#8217;s event wasn&#8217;t just a showcase for some slick new webOS hardware, but a eulogy to the pioneering company that made it possible, the company that created the market for handheld devices and shaped that first early vision of mobile computing&#8230;.</p>
<p>Eh, Oldsmobile was a great brand too, I suppose.</p>

<p>BoomTown is showing my age quite a bit today, after I unearthed notes this morning from 11 years ago.</p>
<p>It was for a story I never ended up doing in December of 1999 for The Wall Street Journal&#8211;where I was pretty much the only Internet beat reporter for the newspaper in Silicon Valley then&#8211;about the possibility that Mary Meeker was considering leaving Morgan Stanley in New York for two hot West coast jobs.</p>
<p>The high-profile Wall Street Internet analyst never made the move back then.</p>
<p>But, at long last, Meeker finally decided today to take one of those offers, joining Kleiner Perkins today as a venture partner in the digital arena.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a much-needed hire by the legendary firm and its most prominent partner, John Doerr, given Meeker&#8217;s deep well of experience and the critical need for the still-lagging-behind-hotter-VCs Kleiner to wade more definitively into more current digital trends that she knows well.</p>
<p>For sure, Kleiner dominated Web 1.0 by backing what are now its golden oldies, such as Netscape Communications, Amazon and Google.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s more recent Web 2.0 investments and influence has not been as impressive, especially with regards to its brighter lights and sharper entrepreneurs.</p>
<p>As in: No Facebook. No Foursquare. No Groupon. No Twitter (yet).</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/imgres1.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/imgres1.jpeg" alt="" title="imgres" width="180" height="181" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-37771" /></a></p>
<p>To be fair, Kleiner has made some interesting moves&#8211;mostly due to its iconoclastic partner <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101022/a-nerd-by-any-other-name-would-be-as-geek-bing-gordon-waxes-poetic-and-more-at-the-sfund-launch/">Bing Gordon</a> (pictured here)&#8211;such as one fund to focus on <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100331/kpcb-doubles-down-on-ifund-200-million-for-iphone-and-ipad-apps">Apple iPhone and iPad apps</a> and another on <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101021/liveblogging-unveiling-of-the-sfund-at-facebook-with-guest-stars-kleiner-amazon-and-zynga/">social</a>.</p>
<p>And it&#8217;s has one big and shiny Web 2.0 bet&#8211;which it never fails to point to an awful lot&#8211;in gaming phenom Zynga, also courtesy of Gordon.</p>
<p>Bringing on Meeker to add to that now will surely help Kleiner at a critical time, giving it new investment chances, as the digital space shift sharply again.</p>
<p>In an <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20101129/morgan-stanley-analyst-mary-meeker-moving-to-kleiner-perkins/">interview with the Journal today</a>, Doerr correctly called the time&#8211;a mash-up of social networking, e-commerce and mobile&#8211;&#8221;a third wave of innovation.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a quick interview this morning, Meeker underscored this, noting, &#8220;the level of engagement from large companies and the innovation coming from all over Silicon Valley makes this a unique time to invest in and build important companies.&#8221;</p>
<p>She said she was attracted to the team at Kleiner to help her move to a new level of expertise and will be spending more significant time in Northern California at her home here.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is an opportunity to stretch myself in a great spot at a great time,&#8221; said Meeker, noting she was especially interested in the mobile space. &#8220;It&#8217;s a pretty massive shift going on right now and I wanted to be part of it.&#8221;</p>
<p>But a move way back when by Meeker would have been an even bigger deal, since the Web 1.0 was at what turned out to be its peak moment in December of 1999&#8211;the ill-fated AOL-Time Warner merger would not be announced for a month, in fact.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/Queen-Greatest-Hits-II-1991.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/Queen-Greatest-Hits-II-1991-275x275.jpg" alt="" title="Queen - Greatest Hits II (1991)" width="250" height="250" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-37762" /></a></p>
<p>And Meeker&#8211;who was involved in that deal and most of the other bigs ones, especially the IPOs&#8211;was the undisputed &#8220;Queen of the Net&#8221; from her powerful perch as the top kingmaker on the booming scene.</p>
<p>After working at other firms, she had come to Morgan Stanley as an analyst in 1991, covering PCs, hardware, software and the still nascent Internet scene.</p>
<p>I had met her several years later in a late-night interview in her office in Manhattan, Chinese food included, while I was working on a book on the rising power of AOL.</p>
<p>AOL was one of the many companies she had introduced Wall Street to, and she had become one the key nexuses for all the newly hatched Web players.</p>
<p>For her to leave her job then would have caused reverberations everywhere, since investors far and wide were taking her recommendations on the new companies of the moment, such as Amazon and eBay.</p>
<p>So&#8211;while she would later endure negative scrutiny for some of her too bullish cues, after the bursting of the Internet bubble came soon after&#8211;nabbing her at the time would be been a very big story.</p>
<p>And who was trying to entice her?</p>
<p>Well, Bill Gross of Idealab for one, offering her the possibility of big IPO stock options (which would turn out to be less than valuable soon after).</p>
<p>Said Gross in an email to me this morning:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Back when we were opening an Idealab office in NY, we wanted to get the best talent in the universe, and that led us right to Mary. She was brilliant and ahead of her time then, as now.</p>
<p>At the time, we talked about working with her to have her insights about industries and companies help us inform the direction our existing companies should take, as well as brainstorm together what new companies to create.</p>
<p>I think Mary was just too happy doing what she was doing, and she went on to have another great 10-year run doing just that!</p></blockquote>
<p>And the other suitor? That was Doerr of Kleiner Perkins.</p>
<p>A longtime friend and a star venture capitalist whose investments benefited greatly from Meeker&#8217;s attention, he had long tried to recruit her.</p>
<p>Fast forward to today, as Doerr seems to have finally sealed the deal.</p>
<p>Meeker&#8217;s title at the investment bank has most recently been as its head of global technology research.</p>
<p>At Kleiner Perkins, no surprise, she&#8217;ll focus on the firm&#8217;s investments in social, mobile and e-commerce, trying to turbocharge its efforts.</p>
<p>Presumably including, as<a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101129/twitters-buffet-of-options-investors-like-dst-or-acquirers-like-google/"> NetworkEffect&#8217;s Liz Gannes reported earlier today</a>, Kleiner making a big push to invest in a new badillion-dollar funding round for Twitter.</p>
<p>Meeker&#8217;s presence could help there for sure, especially since she has been a big proponent of the microblogging service, as you can see on page 18 of her most recent annual Internet trends report&#8211;titled <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101116/and-the-meeker-shall-inherit-the-virtual-earth-in-other-words-marys-annual-internet-trends-preso">&#8220;Ten Questions Internet Execs Should Ask &#038; Answer.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s clear, as you will read below, those are just the kinds of queries Kleiner needs to be making.</p>

<p>Today at the Web 2.0 Summit conference in San Francisco, Yahoo announced a bunch of new features, most of which the Silicon Valley Internet giant had already unveiled.</p>
<p>(Yes, this is the riveting life of BoomTown.)</p>
<p>Delivered by Chief Product Officer Blake Irving and other execs, the presentation included Sketch-a-Search, quick apps in search and Search Assist, as well as integration of Zynga social games and Twitter into the site and more about its Yahoo Contributor Network.</p>
<p>But there was news: A local offers program, similar to offerings <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101103/liveblogging-the-facebook-mobile-event-single-sign-on">recently made by Facebook</a> and others.</p>
<p>There are 20 partners in this iteration, including Groupon, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101008/yahoos-ma-strategy-maybe-local-commerce-rather-than-content-hello-groupon">Yahoo has tried to buy outright</a> for many billions of dollars.</p>
<p>It seems to have saved some dough with this deal, which is being tested nationwide.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s approach to the discounted daily local deal boom is integration, of course, as well as aggregation, which is its best quality.</p>
<p>Of course, like all the updates, what Yahoo was announcing was essentially table stakes to keep up with what has been going on across the Internet at companies such as Apple, Google, Amazon and Facebook.</p>
<p>In fact, one question at the press event this morning focused on the incremental nature of Yahoo&#8217;s changes in comparison to others, and whether it can innovate as quickly.</p>
<p>Irving, who is certainly a lively character and knows about those issues from his many years at Microsoft, said he is trying to force a culture where Yahoos can &#8220;quickly iterate [products] and &#8220;it is safe to innovate fast.&#8221;</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s hope!</p>

<p>BoomTown will admit it: I am a social party pooper.</p>
<p>In any case, here is a lovely video I did yesterday while at the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101021/liveblogging-unveiling-of-the-sfund-at-facebook-with-guest-stars-kleiner-amazon-and-zynga/">launch of the sFund</a>.</p>
<p>The sFund is a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101021/kleiner-perkins-announces-250-million-sfund-for-social-start-ups/">$250 million fund for social start-ups</a>, whose partners include Kleiner Perkins, Amazon, Facebook, Comcast, Liberty Media, Zynga and Allen &#038; Co.</p>
<p>The event participants included, as you can see above, Silicon Valley power VC John Doerr, Amazon CEO and founder Jeff Bezos, Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, Zynga CEO and founder Mark Pincus, and VC Bing Gordon.</p>

<p>At the end of the presentation to the press, the sFund&#8217;s new majordomo, Gordon (who looks like a clean-shaven version of Hagrid from &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221;), took to the stage and read a very unusual poem about entrepreneurs, which I recorded for posterity. After which, he took on a video interview.</p>

<p>Good thing AT&#038;T Wireless CEO Ralph de la Vega is so certain the end of the carrier&#8217;s iPhone exclusivity deal <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100519/att-not-worried-about-verizon-iphone/">doesn’t portend a mass subscriber exodus,</a> otherwise you might look at AT&#038;T&#8217;s latest earnings and the degree to which they were driven by the device and (cough) worry.</p>
<p>Reporting <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20101021005786/en/Record-Wireless-Sales-Strong-Revenue-Earnings-Growth">third quarter financials</a> largely in line with Wall Street’s forecasts, AT&#038;T said today it activated 5.2 million iPhones in the quarter&#8211;62 percent more than the record 3.2 million it activated earlier this year. Odd then that the device is notably absent from the &#8220;Mobile Broadband Leadership&#8221; slide in <a href="http://www.att.com/Investor/Financial/Earning_Info/docs/3Q_10_slide_c.pdf">AT&#038;T&#8217;s investor presentation</a>. A passive-aggressive jab back at that &#8220;rumored&#8221; Verizon deal, perhaps? </p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/10/attBBleadership.jpg"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/10/attBBleadership-275x212.jpg" alt="" title="attBBleadership" width="275" height="212" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-51064" /></a></p>
<p>Anyway&#8230;</p>
<p>The company posted a profit of 55 cents per share, up 3.8 percent from the 53 cents per share it managed in the third quarter of 2009 and in line with what analysts had been expecting. Revenue rose to $31.58 billion from $30.73 billion in the same period a year earlier and slightly exceeded the average analyst expectation of $31.25 billion.</p>
<p>So a strong quarter, but one overshadowed by that long-rumored loss of iPhone exclusivity. As Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett observed in a note to investors this morning, the heavy subsidies AT&#038;T offers for the iPhone cut deeply into its bottom line.</p>
<p>&#8220;In anticipation of losing exclusivity, AT&#038;T has rapidly served up its own inoculation&#8211;a massive campaign to upgrade existing iPhone subscribers to new two year contracts that will lock them in as new options emerge,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;The cost of this strategy, of course, is subsidies, and that cost was front and center in AT&#038;T&#8217;s 3Q results. In total, Wireless margins were light, but Wireline cost cutting was better-than-expected, and overall earnings were therefore in line at $0.55.&#8221;</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Tonight, Yahoo is introducing a new set of search upgrades, moving to focus on boosting its experience for consumers as it ports responsibility for underlying search technology over to Microsoft under its new partnership.</p>
<p>The new features include an innovative, if odd, vertical &#8220;accordion&#8221; tab.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have been actively working on the algorithmic transition of search, which was  completed in August, and we are already releasing new features to the search experience,&#8221; said Shashi Seth, SVP of Yahoo Search and Marketplaces, in an interview with BoomTown today. &#8220;Since we are not actively spending a lot of energy on back-end stuff, we can focus our efforts on new things.&#8221;</p>
<p>Among the new enhancements to Yahoo (YHOO) search: A vertical &#8220;accordion&#8221; paradigm with shortcuts on search results that allow for new kinds of information presentation; &#8220;quick apps,&#8221; beginning with one for Netflix (NFLX) that lets its members add movies to their queue directly from the search results page; slideshows within search from the &#8220;Trending Now&#8221; lists on Yahoo; more immersive and theater-style photo and video search, as well as &#8220;the ability for people to view personally meaningful public Facebook albums from friends,&#8221; when they sign in to Facebook; and a new mobile search experience for Apple (AAPL) iPhone and Google Android smartphones, as well as feature phones, that uses HTML5 technology.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted users to see that things had changed dramatically,&#8221; said Seth. &#8220;Consumer needs for search engines have changed.&#8221;</p>
<p>He said that in testing so far, engagement&#8211;an increasingly important measure for advertisers&#8211;had spiked with the new features, especially in &#8220;taking search from an information need to action at an end.&#8221;</p>
<p>Seth promised a &#8220;huge pipeline of stuff&#8221; to come in search, where the Silicon Valley Internet giant holds the No. 2 position in market share, well behind Google (GOOG) and ahead of the Microsoft (MSFT) Bing service.</p>
<p>Both Google and Microsoft have been adding a series of search upgrades over the last year, such as Google Instant, while Yahoo has not.</p>

<p>Yesterday, at <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100901/apple-music-event-2010/">the Apple music event in San Francisco</a>, I had a short chat with Apple CEO Steve Jobs as he strolled through the demo room for the media, just after he had announced various updates for the iPod, Apple TV and iTunes onstage.</p>
<p>One of the those was the introduction of a new social network for music called Ping that Apple (AAPL) has integrated within iTunes 10 and which looks an awful lot like the experience you get on Facebook.</p>
<p>Essentially, it is a vertical version&#8211;in this case for music&#8211;of the powerful social networking site.</p>
<p>Facebook has noodled for years about creating its own social music offering, including doing a partnership with Lala, which <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091204/confirmed-apple-in-talks-to-buy-music-service-lala-com">was bought by Apple last year</a> and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100601/apple-pulls-the-plug-on-lala-replaces-it-with-nothing">shuttered in June</a>.</p>
<p>But its efforts have largely gone nowhere.</p>
<p>And Facebook is nowhere on Ping, either. Currently, there is no linking, sharing or participation of any kind with Facebook&#8211;or Twitter or MySpace&#8211;on Ping, which will work only on the iTunes software on computers, iPhones and iPods.</p>
<p>When I asked Jobs about that, he said Apple had indeed held talks with Facebook about a variety of unspecified partnerships related to Ping, but the discussions went nowhere.</p>
<p>The reason, according to Jobs: Facebook wanted &#8220;onerous terms that we could not agree to,&#8221; related to connecting with Facebook friends on Ping.</p>
<p>For those who are struck by the word, the definition of onerous, <a href="http://www.google.com/dictionary?q=onerous&#038;langpair=en|en&#038;hl=en&#038;sa=X&#038;ei=am1_TMODH4L4swP2kfn7BA&#038;ved=0CBUQmwMoAA">according to an online dictionary</a>: &#8220;Involving an amount of effort and difficulty that is oppressively burdensome; Involving heavy obligations.&#8221;</p>
<p>Jobs did not elaborate on those troublesome terms and also would not say if Ping would incorporate connecting with Facebook or even using Facebook Connect&#8211;which would make it much easier to find friends to share music with.</p>
<p>&#8220;We could, I guess,&#8221; he shrugged.</p>
<p>And when I asked how to find friends, Jobs offered, noting iTunes had 160 million users across the globe: &#8220;You can type their names into search or send them emails inviting them to join.&#8221;</p>
<p>Okay, although being more open would work too!</p>
<p>As <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100901/apple-debuts-facebooks-new-music-service-that-doesnt-run-on-facebook/">MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka noted</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;Maybe Apple plans on joining the rest of the Web, via an open API that will let Facebook, Twitter et al&#8211;maybe even the to-be-launched Google (GOOG) music service&#8211;play nicely with Ping. We’ll see.&#8221;</p>
<p>Facebook&#8211;including some execs who are definitely irked about how closely Ping resembles Facebook, right down to the blue color scheme&#8211;hopes so.</p>
<p>Consider the statement issued by Facebook to me&#8211;after attempts to get it verbally failed, due ironically to several dropped connections on the iPhone of the exec I spoke to:<br />

<p>&#8220;Facebook believes in connecting people with their interests and we&#8217;ve partnered with innovative developers around the world who share this vision. Facebook and Apple have cooperated successfully in the past to offer people great social experiences and we look forward to doing so in the future.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words: <em>Zing</em>, Ping.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Oddly enough, a Facebook connection feature appeared to be in Ping when some signed up&#8211;not for me&#8211;as noted by <a href="http://www.cultofmac.com/itunes-ping-and-facebook-whats-going-on/57594">Cult of Mac</a>. And <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/if-apple-cant-deal-with-facebooks-onerous-terms-for-ping-why-is-it-in-apples-keynote-screenshots-2010-9">Silicon Alley Insider&#8217;s Dan Frommer</a> even spotted the wording in Jobs&#8217;s stage presentation. I have an email into Apple PR asking for a comment on the change.</p>
<p>In any case, at the Apple event, Jobs told me he had great hopes for the social music service, adding that Ping could be the most significant thing to come out of yesterday&#8217;s announcements.</p>
<p>But soon enough he moved right on to the new iPods, declaring enthusiastically: &#8220;Isn&#8217;t the nano amazing?&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;We have a lot of other interesting launch nights coming out this summer,&#8221; he said to the crowd of media gathered in the decked-out cafeteria of the social networking behemoth&#8217;s HQ in Palo Alto, Calif.</p>
<p>Since summer is ending in a few weeks, he and I had a short chat after the presentation about exactly what that meant.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is just the start of a lot more to come, because I think it&#8217;s important that we bring out as many features and innovations as quickly as we can,&#8221; said Zuckerberg, whose kinetic demeanor appeared to be channeling a 12-pack of energy drinks.</p>
<p>He talked about a start-up night, as well as one devoted to Facebook&#8217;s recently released beta <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=411795942130">Questions</a> product, which he said he thinks could be massive.</p>
<p>The feature, like Yahoo Answers or Quora, gives users the ability to get answers to their questions from friends and even the larger community.</p>
<p>&#8220;The way we do search right now doesn&#8217;t address exactly what people might be looking for,&#8221; said Zuckerberg. &#8220;Instead of messing around on Web pages, someday, you should put a request into a phone and have it beep with the right answer.&#8221;</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t think Zuckerberg was meaning to delivering a specific smack upside the head to Google (GOOG)&#8211;he must like the search giant a little since he has hired so many of its employees&#8211;although that&#8217;s the market that Facebook is aiming at, of course.</p>
<p>And, indeed, it&#8217;s aimed changing how search is done, using a smart melding of people knowledge and deep troves of data to deliver more than the brute-force results consumers get now via search.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg declined to name what else was up&#8211;&#8221;We have not made that public yet&#8221;&#8211;but it&#8217;s good to see a founder so engaged, in the style of Steve Jobs of Apple (AAPL), Jeff Bezos of Amazon (AMZN) and also, of course, the Google twins, Larry Page and Sergey Brin.</p>
<p>While Facebook was clearly riding in the wake of the innovation of others in geo-location&#8211;such as Foursquare&#8211;with its Places entry, the race might not always be to the swift.</p>
<p>In fact, Zuckerberg seems to be hoping it is to the pretty fast and very steady.</p>

<p>Microsoft had its annual Financial Analyst Meeting at its Redmond, Wash., campus yesterday, where BoomTown liveblogged the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100729/liveblogging-microsofts-financial-analyst-meeting-its-a-beautiful-day/">morning</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100729/liveblogging-microsoft’s-financial-analyst-meeting-afternoon-session-nobody-puts-stevie-in-the-corner/">afternoon</a> sessions with the software giant&#8217;s top execs.</p>
<p>That included CEO Steve Ballmer, who talked about how a tablet device to compete with the Apple (AAPL) iPad was coming from Microsoft &#8220;soon&#8221; and also the company&#8217;s efforts in its eight &#8220;core&#8221; businesses.</p>

<p>After BoomTown complained at <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091202/liveblogging-bing-new-features-demo-no-donuts/">December&#8217;s search summit</a> held by Bing about the lack of the finest pastry known to man&#8211;namely, <em>donuts</em>!&#8211;minions were dispatched by top Microsoft geek general Satya Nadella to fix the dire situation.</p>
<p>And, happily, at Search Summit 2010, there on the lovely snack table were a small pile of them&#8211;which looked like Krispy Kreme to me.</p>
<p>There were lacking the key sprinkles feature, but carb crisis averted!</p>
<p>Speaking of features, top Bing execs were on hand in San Francisco to show off all the work they have been doing over the last year in the software giant&#8217;s efforts to topple mean old Google (GOOG) via an innovative offering.</p>
<p>Even the plain-speaking Nadella acknowledged in his opening it was still a bit of a children&#8217;s crusade, since Bing had barely broken into double digits in search market share and Google was hovering around 70 percent.</p>
<p>But the most <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100713/search-share-still-tricky-to-grok-but-googles-down-while-yahoo-and-bing-show-some-legs/">recent report released this week by comScore</a> (SCOR) showed continued promise, so Microsoft (MSFT) presses on its long and pricey road!</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s my liveblog of this morning&#8217;s event at the software giant&#8217;s San Francisco office:</p>
<p><strong>10 am PT:</strong> Nadella opened with the donuts news. Nice move.</p>
<p>Then, it was onto some promising stats of growth, which have surely been promising, despite the high price tag (Microsoft&#8217;s online division lost $700 million in the last quarter, to give you an idea of the sticker shock).</p>
<p>Still, as search exec Brian MacDonald said, as he was presenting all the many new features&#8211;such as cards&#8211;added over the last year: &#8220;We&#8217;re in it to win it.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the end of his presentation, in a slide title &#8220;Future,&#8221; he said reporters could not take pictures or video. Sure, hop us up on sugar and then tell us something interesting and bar us from taking snaps!</p>
<p>But MacDonald clicked through the images so fast, it was hard to tell what Bing would be up to. Essentially, it looks like a more blocky, image-heavy design, with more differing fonts and contextual info.</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am PT:</strong> A smart search geek Harry Shum was then on with a lecture about search intent and all kinds of insider tweakery that made me confused, since I do not understand terms such as &#8220;page-level dialog.&#8221; There is also apparently &#8220;session-level dialog.&#8221;</p>
<p>Harry knows what it all means, which is pretty much all that counts.</p>

<p>My take: It has to do with some sort of digital conversation Bing search dudes are having with the users that users have no idea is actually going on.</p>
<p>Simply put: They&#8217;re <em>watching</em> you.</p>
<p><strong>11 am PT:</strong> Next search guy talked about search intent and such.</p>
<p>That means adding features such as a link to search history or instant weather on the opening page. It&#8217;s the little touches that count.</p>
<p>In fact, they do, as Bing tries to differentiate itself from what Google offers, via a series of neat tricks and clever design.</p>
<p>That includes, for example, easy access to lyrics and song classifiers, when searching in music.</p>
<p>Lady Gaga&#8217;s &#8220;Poker Face&#8221; was used as an example, since Lady Gaga seems to be the go-to gal on seeming cool these days.</p>
<p>(But is it time to check Bing search trends to see if she is peaked?)</p>
<p><strong>11:19 am:</strong> Next, top Online Services Division exec Erik Jorgensen came on to discuss mobile and mapping. He compared himself with &#8220;Edward Scissorhands&#8221; when talking about how hard it is to have a good experience on a small device.</p>
<p>&#8220;Type less, do more,&#8221; is the internal mantra at Bing, he said. Coincidentally, my mantra is type more, do <em>less</em>.</p>
<p>Jorgensen showed off Bing mobile stats: 23 million users, 160 percent growth and four million downloads of its iPhone app. Yes, it has come to this&#8211;Microsoft using Apple (AAPL) to tout its success.</p>
<p>Then it was onto mapping, which is a pretty good arena for Bing. Stats: 41 percent growth in U.S. unique users, 43 percent rise in searches using enhanced maps, a huge boost in map apps.</p>
<p><strong>11:29 am:</strong> Bing Maps guru Blaise Aguera y Arcas&#8211;who has the single most sexy name in all of geekdom&#8211;said the focus is now on social location.</p>
<p>As in Foursquare!</p>
<p>In fact, he showed off a map in which Foursquare check-ins pour in and pop up in a bit of a freaky way, as in: You can stalk in real-time.</p>
<p>Then it was onto cool mapping eye-candy, which I always fall for since the whole zoom-in-zoom-out thing is mesmerizing. Aguera y Arcas showed off clickable geographic names and embedded maps within maps from, in this case, a zoo or a museum.</p>
<p><strong>11:50 am:</strong> Q&#038;A Time!</p>
<p>The first question is about gaming. It&#8217;s hot said Nadella, and Bing wants to provide discovery and search more than games themselves.</p>
<p>I asked a question about the status of the Yahoo (YHOO) search partnership deal, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100701/digitals-deadliest-catch-part-1-the-microhoo-search-integration-teams-nelson-and-morrissey-speak/">which is in process</a>. It is a <em>very</em> complex process, in fact.</p>
<p>And, though they were supposed to be in tandem, Nadella said that algorithm would move faster than advertising technology handover.</p>
<p>&#8220;If there were a drop of of advertisers [due to the new deal], that would be problematic,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Yes, which segued into the next obvious topic: When would Bing make some dough?</p>
<p>Thus. I asked about the high costs of competing in the search space, which Nadella said would continue, including distribution deals and in the aggressive marketing of Bing.</p>
<p>&#8220;For sure, we had to ante up,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But the product has to be able to stand on its own&#8230;ultimately, the product has to carry the day.&#8221;</p>
<p>More questions about distribution, social search, churn, product differentiation and whether Bing is growing from a more passive user to building a &#8220;fan base.&#8221;</p>
<p>BoomTown brainstorm: If they handed out delicious donuts with each search, I&#8217;d leave Google in a New York minute.</p>
<p>But, like a skunk at a garden party, I asked another question about when Bing is going to break even.</p>
<p>Nadella was too smart to answer this digital hot potato.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a big market where money can we made, and we are making progress,&#8221; he said, saying I should ask his bosses about specifics.</p>
<p>I shall!</p>
<p>In this vein, someone then asked a question about whether Bing would ever become a verb as Google has become.</p>

<p>Shum joked that in the future six letters would be too many for people to say, so things were looking up for four-letter search brands!</p>
<p>More questions included whether Google was tweaked by Bing yet (yep!), and whether Bing should try to win in an international market to show some muscle (U.S. is still top focus).</p>
<p>Finally, it was &#8220;time to deploy the cream puffs,&#8221; said a Microsoft PR honcho.</p>
<p>Long past time, I&#8217;d say.</p>
